WGP2 Season 5| Week 10 Preview: GP2 Vilitan Challenge

Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course :: GP2 / AOGP Event History

Image

For the first time since the inaugural season of World Grand Prix 2 Competition, the World Grand Prix 2 circuit will contest a points paying event at the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course in Rockii Coast, Vilita. That event, which was won by Jenna Vanderson of Vannish Motors Racing, was replaced on the World Grand Prix 2 schedule by the Cocoabo Preservation Grand Prix up until World Grand Prix 2 Season 4 when the newly renovated Alikki-Corra Street Course was opened for action. However, delays at the start of the 5th World Grand Prix 2 Season saw the Alikki-Corra Street Course being removed from the schedule and replaced by the famous course in Rockii Coast which will play home to the Championship Deciding Race in all three major open wheel levels.

First up will be the Atlantian Oceania GP of the Rocks for the AOCAR Grand Prix Circuit which is currently a toss-up as to who will prevails the drivers champion. Once that event is complete the focus will be on the World Grand Prix 2 circuit where no driver or team has been able to distance themselves as far away from the rest of the pack with still 8 drivers having a mathematical opportunity to finish first place in the Drivers Championship for the current season. Likewise it will be a close battle in AOGP where a number of drivesr and teams remain in contention for a potential celebration in Rockii Coast.

Track Location: Rockii Coast, Vilita, Atlantian Oceania
Lap Record: 1:25.440 (Stang Crax, WGPC 11)
Track Lap Length: 5.05km
Precipitation Chance: 14%

Overview:
Located in the picturesque region of Vilitan right overlooking the waters of Atlantian Oceania, the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course was carved out of the Rocks on Vilita's Rockii Coast and offers a unique challenge to all drivers. The original challenge course consists of a wide-open high intensity speed park while The Grand Prix 'Boot' modification of the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course was a new addition to the facility in preparation for its inclusion in World Grand Prix Championship 11.

The Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course will be fully staffed with the exception of the Turn 5/6 and Turn 11 Grandstands and associated service centers which will be closed to the public. The majority of amenities will be available and the traveling merchandise haulers for the WGPC circuit will be on hand. Fans will be able to get a discounted weekend pass for entry and there will be no assigned seating for the weekend events. Children 12 and under are free with accompanying adult. All fans wishing to enter the Paddock Area will have to purchase a Paddock Pass for an additional fee.

Where to Eat:

Inside of the pit area in the center of the track you will find the central eatery with all the local cuisine, as well as some brought to you by the other competing nations as well. Everything from meats to the meat free, things that fly, things that moo and things that swim. There are rumors that there will even be a 'bug eatery' and a "We'll fry It". The "We'll Fry It" is likely to command huge lines as they have been banned for quite some time in Vilita. However, organizers did not want foreign travelers to suffer just because of the healthier eating habits of those in the Tropics, so "We'll Fry It" has been granted a license to serve on premises for the race weekend. The business model is supreme as they don't supply any of the food with the price of the meal. The guest brings.... whatever they want... and "We'll Fry It" fries it for them. They will likely have a cooler filled with various meats and candies that can be purchased and fried for an additional fee, but "We'll Fry It" will fry anything under 2 square feet in size for just 7 tures.

Outside of the paddock area, the hidden gem of the course is the famed Poultry Shack in Turn 13. The Poultry Shack is an absolutely exquisite source to quench that meaty craving and they will dish it any way you can handle it. You can walk away with a leg in your hand or even a cup of soup. Fans sometimes don't like to make the walk all the way to the Shack however, in addition to the food, the view is incredible looking out over the Vilitan cliffs over the Water. Visibility at turn 13 and the shack is thought to be amongst the most impressive in the entire Island.

Where to get Free Stuff or Prizes:

You likely won't have to walk more than a few hundred yards without being coerced into taking a free sample of various products on display such as the local-based Vilaye Energy Drink - personal sponsor of Vilitan driver R.L. Cruisin. The key will be to find the locations where they are handing out sealed portions opposed to the open-top samples that you'll need to drink on the spot. Check the boot area around Turn 7 for the best Vilaye booths where they will not only be giving out full beverages but they will have other prizes you can win and games for the children. A Second Vilaye Booth by the start/finish line will not be as large and will only be handing out samples in open cups. Look for giveaways and handouts from other event and team sponsors throughout the Fan section of the paddock and grandstand areas.

The most exciting display however is the recurring Tiones Lumber display outside Turn 1. Tiones Lumber holds mini-lumberjack competitions for the fans each season and you can line up to compete in many famed wood-based competitions such as the 40-foot speed climb, Long rolling, the Standing Block Chop and there will even be a team relay. The best times each day win prizes from Tiones Lumber. First prize winners will be excluded from winning on subsequent days but alternate prize winners can compete for the big prize the following day. Fans who beat the all time-records could find themselves winning free Paddock Passes or other great prizes from Tiones Lumber.

Tropicorp Racing Supply will also be on hand with a 'Pit Stop Challenge" display at the end of the pit lane where fans will be able to test their ability to change a WGPC tyre or act as the fuel person so long as they first sign a release form indemnifying Tropicorp and the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course of any injury that may occur as they attempt to set the fast times to qualify for a daily prize drawing from Tropicorp.

Where to access the drivers:

Drivers are readily accessible to those with a Paddock Pass. However, in the Paddock the drivers are working so fans are asked to to approach the drivers. Instead, let the drivers approach you. There will also be designated driver interaction zones for fans with scheduled driver appearances posted throughout the weekend.

:: Tiones Lumber Lumberjack Challenge ::

The Tiones Lumber corporation has a long history of aligning itself with sporting events in Vilita & Turori, from being the long time shirt sponsors of the Vilitan Stellar Division's Yeaddin Owls AFC, to their sponsorships in motorsports, the name "Tiones" is always on the forefront. Competitors and fans alike reap the benefits of Tiones Lumber involvement in sporting events with their finances sometimes allowing a team to compete or an event to proceed and their famous Lumberjack Competition displays always a hit with the fans.

The largest Tiones Lumberjack Challenge to date has taken place at the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course in Rockii Coast, Vilita ahead of the Vilitan Grand Prix race during WGPC 14. However, with the Grand Prix of Turori taking the place of the Vilitan Grand Prix for the 16th World Grand Prix championships season, Tiones Lumber has an even bigger event planned. Instead of just having one or two concurrent 'zones' that fans can test their lumberjack mettle in, there will be five distinct zones where fans will be able to participate in various activities. There will be four 'competitive' zones where participants will be timed and scored for their execution - whether they are truly competitive or not - with each days top times earning a prize and the best scores of the race weekend crowned champions. The fifth zone will be deemed a 'family zone' with events and challenges more suited for children to participate in.

The Five zones will be as follows:

COMPETITIVE ZONES ::
Note, All competitive events will explicitly require a waiver and release of all liability against Tiones Lumber signed by the participant

Zone 1: Chopping & Cutting

There will be 3 distinct events available in Zone 1, the Standing Chop, the Firewood Split and the Saw-Through Cut.

Standing Chop: Tool: Standard Axe :: In the Standing Chop Challenge, competitors can be scored in two different categories: Time and Number of Chops. A single 12 inch diameter log will be stood vertically and the competitor will be tasked with chopping through until the log is severed. Competitive times are expected to be under 20 seconds. All contestants are required to wear chain mail protection from the waste down to protect against injury from errant chops.

Firewood Split: Tool: Standard Axe :: Like the Standing Chop, there are two separate criteria used to grade the Firewood Split. Contestants will have 45 seconds to split. as many firewood segments as they can. The first 10 segments will be pre-staged and the contestant will be timed in completion of the first 10 successful splits. Should they have time remaining on the clock after the 10th split they will be tasked with resetting and further chopping segments until time runs out. Winners will be declared both on speed and number of splits made. All contestants are required to wear chain mail protection from the waste down to protect against injury from errant chops.

Saw-Through Cut: Tool: One-man Bucking Saw :: Contestants will saw through an elevated, horizontal log with a 20 inch diameter using a one-man bucking saw. Competitive times are expected to be below 15 seconds.

Zone 2: Climbing

The Climbing zone will see three identical Climbing Challenge stations to allow multiple contestants to attempt the event at the same time.

The event consists of a 20 meter tall vertical log which the contestant must after starting from a position with both feet on the ground, climb and bypass the 18 meter mark. Contestants will have spurred climbers on their feet and steel-cored climbing ropes. Several safety precautions are taken in the event. A support pole next to the designated climbing log will support a belay rope system managed by event staff. Time will stop once the contestant reaches the 18 meter mark on the vertical log and the contestant will not be timed on the way back from the top of the climbing log to return to the ground. Competitive times are expected to be below 13 seconds.

Zone 3: Log Rolling

A new addition, the Log Rolling competition will take place in water. Multiple floating logs will stretch from one end of the log pool to the other with a dry dock on either side. Contestants will be timed on crossing the pool twice - or from the starting dock to the opposite dock, then back to the starting dock. If the competitor falls into the water they are permitted one attempt to re-mount the log and continue their run. If the contestant should fall a second time their run will be ended and they will be given credit for the number of total logs they have traversed.

Zone 4: Team Events

Team Saw-Through Cut: Tool: Two-man Bucking Saw :: Contestants will saw through an elevated, horizontal log with a 20 inch diameter using a two-man bucking saw. Competitive times are expected to be below 7 seconds.

Team Log Rolling: Multiple floating logs will stretch from one end of the log pool to the other with a dry dock on either side. Contestants will be timed on crossing the pool twice. Two team members will start on opposite sides of the pool and will have to traverse from their starting dock to the opposite dock and back resulting in two 'passes' where teammates will have to bypass each other on the same log. Contestants must bypass each other on the logs and can not use the docks or the water to complete a bypass. If the competitor falls into the water they are permitted one attempt to re-mount the log and continue their run. If a team suffers a total of three combined falls their run will be ended and they will be given credit for the number of total logs the least advanced competitior has traversed. Time will be stopped once the second of the two team competitors has returned to their starting dock.

NON-COMPETITIVE ZONES ::

Zone 5: Family Zone

The non-competitive family zone will feature learning zones where Firewood Splitting techniques will be taught; three single-log rolling pools including one with a picture zone where the log can be locked into place for an individual or family to pose for photos, two 7 meter climbing logs, a firewood stacking challenge area and a special tree planting zone that teaches youngsters and parents alike the value of Tiones Lumber's Renewable Lumber Operations.

Tiones Lumber is also inviting all World Grand Prix and AOGP drivers to try their hand at the various Lumberjack events in a special reserved time slot after the Friday Practice session.

Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course

''Darian, a few comments before the weekend, perhaps?'' a reporter for Togonistani sports channel Ultrasports 1 said as he pointed the microphone towards Darian Vilau.

''I'm... going to race. Try to win.'' Darian said and shrugged with a complete wtf look on his face. Was that even supposed to be a question? Who on earth had even hired this guy to become a reporter?

''You're still in contention for the drivers title, alongside seven other drivers. Out of all of them, you are the lowest in points, it's quite a gap to close. Are you planning to aim for the title or are you looking more forward to... finishing the season as high in the championship as possible?''

Darian sighed, yet another wtf question. ''Yeah, the season has been difficult, I've had some ups and downs. The team has also been completely new to WGP2 so there has been a learning curve in setting up the cars for different courses and all that. When the setup has been alright, I have delivered. That is what I am planning to do here as well.''

''Do you think you have a chance?''

''For what, the title?''

''Yes. Will you hunt for it?''

''Well I didn't come to WGP2 to joke around here. As I said, if the team can give me the car, I will deliver. If there is a gap, I will go for it. It's all or nothing at this stage, as long as I have a slightest chance I will fight for it and that is what everyone else will do as well.''

The young and inexperienced reporter, perhaps a bit baffled by Darian's concrete and direct response, suddenly didn't even know what to say. ''Uh... thank you, good luck in the race!''

Darian gave the reporter a quick nod in response before turning around and quickly walking towards his pit garage.

''Did you guys test the Multi-24?'' Darian asked out loud as soon as he set foot into the garage. ''Yup, seems all good to go,'' a mechanic replied, ''hop in and the stage is yours.'' Darian's sharpness that was witnessed by the reporter mere few moments ago was nothing new. Darian was a direct to the point kind of guy in general. Whether it had to do with race strategies or car's different mechanical features, Darian was never one to sugarcoat things. When he spotted a problem, he let the team know. When he wasn't pleased with the car's aerodynamical setup, he let the team know. When the team messed up pit strategy and caused nuisance to him... he let them know. He really did not care if he came off as cocky as a result. He also didn't think that he was cocky, he just wanted to make his points clear and do it as quickly as possible, so that the team could take it into account and do better next time. At the end of the day, it was a team sport and it was both in his as well as the team's interest to have the best car and strategy for Darian to give the best result possible.

He took a deep breath as he took seat behind the wheel of KD-1. ''Session starts in... three minutes.'' That was it. Ready to take that baby-girl (the car) out for one last free practice. Time to get these setups right for the qualifying and race. Time for one last push!

Jordan Crowe's girlfriend Steph Landers had enlisted Smitty & Helena's help in a plan so that she could surprise him at the final race in Vilita. Mentioned previously, she had a fear of flying so acute that she'd even looked into seeing a therapist about it because she wanted to support Jordan in his career.

She'd discovered there was a 17 hour, overnight express train that ran to Tropicoast from Oceana, from there she could take a ferry to Lopinka, then figure out the last leg of the trip on the fly. JC could theoretically win the title with a victory, although he was thinking more about helping Batu and the team more than his own ambitions. Steph liked Batu and wanted the team to succeed, so regardless of the potential outcome, she felt it was important for her to be there in person.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

David Peterson was along for the flight, only his second time being part of the team on a flyaway weekend. He's been hired by Mike Lambert to be the CFO for the entire Orange Cow operation, freeing up Vic Marzetti and himself from the business side; Peterson was only a casual fan of open-wheel racing (he preferred NSSCRA) and had no experience in the sport prior to being hired. But this was a big deal to his employers, and it was hard not to be caught up in the emotion and energy surrounding the trip.

There was another reason for Peterson's inclusion to fly with the team to Vilita--he was going to present the numbers regarding the team moving to the WGP series for the next season to the group of VIP guests representing the main sponsors--Commonwealth Oil, LiteSpeed Mobile and the BCEL Beverage Corporation.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

Sammi Carter was trying to keep Batu loose and his mind off the race as they played 'Mutiny' on the seat (and the folding tray) between them (a BP variation on rummy) while in the row ahead of them JC and Nick Unger were playing a card game called 'Bucks' which was short for Bucks Tab (or Buck Stab) which is a play on the the German phrase buchstabiere es ("spell it") in which the cards represent the letters of the alphabet--black suits were A-K, red suits L-Z--and you attempted to make word from your hand, like Scrabble.
Both were the type of games that children would play in the back seat of long distance car trips, and so the fact that these four young adults were engaging it them was a a sign that they were trying to minimize the pressure that would be forthcoming on arrival.

GP2 Vilitan Challenge Presented by Arcticala Electrical

Event History and Track Guide

Located in the picturesque region of Vilitan right overlooking the waters of Atlantian Oceania, the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course was carved out of the Rocks on Vilita's Rockii Coast and offers a unique challenge to all drivers. Originally more of a wide-open high intensity speed park, The Grand Prix modification of the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course was a new addition to the facility in preparation for its inclusion in World Grand Prix Championship 11. While Acceleration and Mechanical Power will be a great equalizer on much of the course, the Grand Prix boot designed by Turorian legend iBen Toralmintii mid-way through the course gives those with the ability to make maneuvers in tight spaces a chance to shine as well.

The Vilitan Grand Prix had been a consistent fixture on the World Grand Prix Championship schedule between World Grand Prix Championship 11 and World Grand Prix Championship 15 before entering into an alternating schema with the Grand Prix of Turori in nearby Eelandii. With the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course having been new to many of the worlds top drivers when introduced during the World Grand Prix Championship's 11th season, the local-based Vilita & Turori Motorsports team dominated the race weekend for the first ever Vilitan Grand Prix. For World Grand Prix Championship Season 16 it was announced that the Vilitan Grand Prix had been relegated to a mid-season test event at the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course while the Grand Prix of Turori at the Eelandii Grand Prix Course took center stage. The Vilitan Grand Prix now runs in odd-numbered World Grand Prix Seasons and has been moved to the season finale for World Grand Prix Championship Season 19.

WGP2 S5
Round 10 - Final Round
GP2 Vilitan Challenge Presented by Arcticala Electrical
Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course, Rockii Coast, Vilita and Turori

This weekend would be a weekend of champions, where both WGPC and WGP2 crown must be decided no matter what. And he would be one of the contenders. For Batu Tüvshinbayar, he knew that this weekend could be the most important of his life and so did everyone at Scuderia Orange Cow - why do you think he was playing 'Mutiny' on the plane to Vilita with Sammi Carter, a card matching game being used as a calming mechanism going to show just how much everything meant to everyone here. With both championships up for grabs for the "Guys in Orange", you'd expect everyone to be a bit on edge but to be fair, they were all dealing with it OK - Estes going through the routines, Helena being the "big Sis" Batu could always rely on, Jordan Crowe still within a shot of the crown but focused mainly on supporting his pal without realising Steph Landers was on route to cheer him on (Yep, Batu knew but he made sure not to say a peep). But even with that environment, he could still feel the pressure on his shoulders at times and a bit of a nervy moment on the Thursday press conference with Aaron Deering made him feel like the fool...which just made him mad at himself. But as he prepared to enter his car for Friday practice, there was at least one thing that could bring a smile to his face: the response of Adonis Fitzpatrick. Donny was fine with being Batu's friend no matter what happened here this weekend, but he did leave 1 final piece of advice for the Mongolian to take on board: if he was to claim the throne, do it for nobody but himself.

The Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course was a fitting track to host the finale of this epic season, the long-flowing circuit and the 'Boot' modification making the route overall a test on how much you know the racing line and how much you pushed yourself to cut your way through it like a knife through butter. For a guy like Batu, a driver who likes to push the limits of what is possible on a track-to-track basis, this circuit was a dream to have for the finale and he certainly took advantage of that on Friday. Momentum was going to be very important here and Batu knew he had to toe the line and try his best no matter what. His pace was certainly brilliant here in this slightly-web practice session, the flowing track certainly playing to his advantage as he took the session over Darian Vilau and Bryce Yannec. Jordan Crowe was going to be key to the Constructors hunt and he ended up in P6 on Friday while Donny was not too far behind in 10th.

Then came Qualifying Day, or Saturday to everyone else, and the wet conditions certainly would play a factor in how things would go. This was to be the most important qualifying session of the season for a lot of people and Batu was most certainly one of them. Taming the track in the full wets would set the scene for the battles to come and he knew that he had to, absolutely had to do well here for his own sake. The Championship contenders would end up all over the place at the end of the day, but the important people to him ended up like this: Donny would start 7th, Crowe in 10th, Vilau was 3rd, Skiia Vialiv 2nd...and Batu himself on pole position. Getting his 2nd pole of the season on the final weekend of the season was certainly a reason to celebrate and he made sure to do that...but he also recognised that the job was half-done. Everything hinged on the race...everything. And he would have to fight for himself.

And so, 48 laps would determine the fate of the Championship once and for all and Batu was certainly nervous from the moment he woke up to the moment he got in that Orange Cow car. Estes and Helena made sure to back him up, to tell him that no matter what happened everything would be OK - just do your best and they'll be happy. The long wait for the lights to go out felt like a lifetime, enough time to refelt on the past and the potential futures that lay in front of him. This race wouldn't be won by Batu Tüvshinbayar but in a situation like this, that didn't necessarily matter - as long as no one out scored Batu by a certain margin, he could be fine - same with SOC as a whole. Instead, he had to play it tactically and only let go of his position when he felt like it was an eventuality. Vilau was the first to be let through, his pace too much in the end and Batu knew letting him take the dub wouldn't change much for Batu. Then, many laps later, he conceded to Vialiv but knowing that he had to keep an eye on him for the sake of the Constructors battle. But with 5 laps to go, he was passed by good ol' Shalmaneser Kalhu, the lovable Adabian of UrGa, and he had to check with Estes what the situation was.
VE: Don't worry Batu, keep it up, keep it up!
BT: Am I still...looking good, Vaughny?
VE: As it stands, yes. As it stands, you'd be the champion by 6 points over Vilau. Keep focus though, Batu.
BT: Copy. Where's Jordan?
VE: Crowe has just overtaken Tan Fang Ling for P9. As it stands, we take the Constructors by 2 points.
BT: Copy. One more thing...Where's Donny?
VE: Adonis is currently P13.
BT: Ahh, ok...Copy!

The gap between that radio message and that famous black-and-white chequered flag was certainly an experience. He had no pressure to overtake Kalhu in front of him and he had no real threat behind him and so, he could spend the final 5 laps thinking about everything and anything. He thought about all his highs and lows thus far and about how big this whole thing would be for him, for Shinebaishin, for TJUN-ia and for Baker Park as well. He thought about what his mother may be thinking right now, presumably watching on in his childhood home, and he wondered if she would be finally proud of her son...but he also realised that her opinion didn't matter anymore. He would become his own person once he took that flag and there was nothing she could do about it from this point on. He was practically in tears when he completed his final lap of the season, only letting the waterworks when his P4 was confirmed and the titles written into the books. His screams of pure joy would be broadcast to the world and everyone attached to SOC, both in TJUN-ia and Baker Park, would be celebrating tonight. Batu Tüvshinbayar, the "Team Killer" of last season, and Scuderia Orange Cow, a relative backmarker last season, had somehow combined forces to become the Champions of the 5th Season of WGP2. Batu was going into the TJUN-ian Hall of Fame, SOC was going to become a household name in the Commonwealth and the story of this season would be told forever and evermore.
He's going to do it, as it stands. I can't believe I am going to say this in a few moments time. Sometimes, there are no words that need to be said. Darian Vilau wins the GP2 Vilita Championship Challenge and now, we must wait for history! Batu's gonna do it, as it stands! We await Skiia Vialiv now and here he comes in 2nd, Kalhu will finish 3rd and BATU WILL FINISH IN 4TH! HERE COMES FINDLEY IN P5 AND DEERING IN P6 AND THAT WILL DO IT! BATU HAS DONE IT! THE 19-YEAR-OLD FROM SHINEBAISHIN IS THE NEW WGP2 CHAMPION! SCUDERIA ORANGE COW WILL BE THE NEW CONSTRUCTORS CHAMPIONS...NOW AND NO ONE CAN BELIEVE WHAT THIS SEASON HAS BEEN FOR US ALL! Batu's the Champion...Wow!

VE: Chequered Flag, Chequered Flag! P4, P4! Well Done! Now I have to wait for a little bit before we know...
BT: I...OK...I can wait...
VE: Batu?
BT: Yes...?
VE: BATU!
BT: Y-yes?
VE: YOU DID IT! WE DID IT! OMG!
BT: AAAAAH! OH MY....oh my....oh my......I...I....I...I
VE: BATU TÜVSHINBAYAR, YOU ARE THE CHAMPION! YOU ARE THE FUCKING CHAMPION! YOU ARE THE MAN!
BT: Thank you, Vaughny.....Thank you all....so...so much....I...don't know....what to say...Thank you all....for believing in me...no matter what....I...I love you all...
VE: We love you too, Batu. We love you too!

He may not have made the podium today, but that wouldn't matter at all...he was still in tears when he parked up at parc ferme for the final time. For 5 minutes, all he did was cry tears of joy in his seat as he could feel the head taps from others on the grid upon his helmet. During that time, a crowd of SOC guys congregated around his car and simply waited for him to be ready to come out...even Donny was there. But once he finally climbed out of that car and took off the helmet the screams and the hugs began. They would all party into the night, though of course, Donny had other business to attend to, but then also came a big announcement amongst the drinks and the tunes - Orange Cow would be making the jump to WGPC next season. That discussion would certainly be one for a later time though, as Batu looked upon what he had done.

HIs name was Batu Tüvshinabayar. He wasn't a team killer anymore...in fact, he may have just given life to a new WGPC program. He was a Champion now...and no one, not even those that share his blood, can take that away from his hands.

Helena had cornered one of the members of TRS tire crew who were assigned to work with the team on race weekends--they'd been dubbed the "Rubber Band" by the mechanics, who had a nickname for everyone--once the team had arrived in Rockii Coast, and through a series of questions and hypothetical examples (and promises of money changing hands), had gotten a ride arranged for Steph from the ferry port in Lopinka to the hotel where the entire Orange Cow contingent were staying here on the Vilitan South Coast.

When the rain started to come down on the Vilitan Mountain Challenge Course ahead of qualifying, it was considered not just a good omen (it has a strange association with good luck in Baker Park), but a favorable advantage for the team; on the previous four occasions during the season that quali was held in the wet, Batu & JC had shown fantastic technique as well as the ability to get the most out of the car under full wet setup--Fourth row at Yakumicha, where Saki Kuyara had been on the podium in the rain the previous year; Batu taking pole at Hessington Island; the pair getting P2/3 at Drummond Vale ahead of their 1-2 sweep in the race; and Batu's win in Aji No Moto in the Feature followed by a 2nd in the Sprint where the SOC cars had run 5th and 9th in wet qualifying conditions.

Clearly, these Cows didn't mind precipitation and don't lay down when rain is imminent, as Batu took his second pole of the season on his final run, nearly breaking the 1:43 barrier.

Sammi Carter and Nick Unger were not just along for the trip as they had their own battle to fight, and the team pulled together to support them as well; as an extension of the AOMC operation, the development of mechanics, techies and other important team members made the decision to go forward with the move of SOC up to WGPC an easy choice. A brand new team would probably take the WGP2 slot, although with a sizeable number of OCR people making up the personnel, opening entry level places in a continuing AOGP entry.

Steph arrived at the track (Helena had texted her to change plans and come straight to the VMCC) about 90 minutes following the practice session ended, got processed for her credentials then went along with Hella to the garage, where the cars were being worked on to prep for the next day's session; the drivers and engineers were still debriefing from free practice in the motorhome, Smitty being in charge of texting when the meeting was over.

There were usually a couple of additional things on the drivers' agenda at the track when the debrief ended, although with Batu in the position he was, the team had limited him to a sponsor VIP meet & greet (and Jordan as well).
"We're gonna go down to the garage and then up to the Club Box", Smitty informed his friend nonchalantly, with Batu, Vaughn, Sunil, Paul Valentini and the rest of the technical staff trailing behind having been brought into the secret as various points.

As they came through the rear entrance, Rebecca Paulson, the PR/Media Director, pulled JC by the arm. "Jordan, we got a request asking if you would meet with a fan who's come over from home for the weekend."
He nodded, then went through to see Steph standing at the rear of the car with all of the mechanics standing along each side.

"Hi, nice to meet you, I'm Jordan". He was absolutely surprised, happy and appreciative that she'd come, however she'd done it, but tried to play it straight for a second or two.

Mike Lambert stepped around and shouted for everyone to quiet down.
"Alright, listen up. Now that we have All of our family here--you don't know how much it means to us that you've come, Steph--let's wrap up, get a good night's rest and come back to win these fuckin's championships!"

CommSport 1 Coverage, Lap 48

"It's been a remarkable rise for this young man from Shinebaishin, in the Mongolian region in TJUN-ia, just 19 years old. He surely has his entire career ahead of him. He was called 'Team Killer' in the last WGP2 campaign--now into Turn 11, and here come the team to the pit wall fence for the celebration they've become famous for--but now they will call him WGP2 Champion! (long front straight shot as the car swerves, people on the fence waving arms & flags) Batu Tüvshinbayar! Delivers the Driver and Constructor's titles for Baker Park's Scuderia Orange Cow. The thousands of fans who've made the trip (shots of the grandstands with groups in orange) have been seen and heard all weekend here in Vilita, and will have the memory of a famous away day to match any that the BP National Soccer team have won through the years. Here's Jordan Crowe, his ninth place being just as important in the Constructors table and he gets the same exuberant welcome home as his teammate."

_________________________________________________________________________________________

Helena had chosen to watch the race in the garage with the rest of the crew, a departure from her normal routine of staying out of the way at the back of the engineering area with the techies; she'd even decided to listen to the team comms on a headset, a first in her tenure with the Scuderia.

There were people constantly giving supportive hand holds throughout--Marley Davis, the garage runner; Paulson and Smitty; Ursula Green, one of the senior mechanics (after the final pit stops).

She'd climbed atop one of the tool cabinets to sit about 2/3 of the way through, and even Rick Osgood came out from his station in the back for a couple of laps (which made her heart flutter); finally Steph, who'd chosen to stay out of the way in the team's Paddock Club box, joined her for the last several laps. Every time someone new appeared, she gave an appreciative squeeze, but had no other physically obvious reaction over the 72+ minutes of the race ahead of the final lap.

Helena was lifted up onto the outer pit wall, and handed a TJUN-ia flag to wave at the last minute; Batu said later that seeing his flag meant everything to him.

Vic Marzetti had a keen sense of ceremony and history, as he got JC and Batu to both autograph a bottle of the Champagne to place alongside the Constructors Trophy, along with Batu's signature on two other bottles--one for him to keep and one for him to give away or sell.

The other 141 bottles? Consumed as intended.
