Over 1,400 hours of Olympic Games coverage across Brityunik Vefecosoin Cairkovoin to be broadcast throughout ABEN - keep an eye on these six brand new unmissable shows...

With the conclusion of the exciting Electrumite Olympic Ceremony, we are getting you geared up for what is expected to be Britonisea's biggest and best coverage of an Olympic Games since the nation first joined the multi-sports event in the Kytler Penninsuale. It was confirmed last month that Brityunik Vefecosoin Cairkovoin had gained the rights for the ABEN Coverage of the Games, with the broadcaster generously subletting the rights to RVC, KVC and ALO:TV of Estogium, Nightom and Aloquirbe respectively at cheaper prices so they can all enjoy the Games too. This also means that at no price at all, Abenites (as long as they pay a television licence) will be able to access the coverage not only on their main channels but also BVC's channels on Freeview TV and our expansive online coverage which will mean all Abenites won't ever miss a gold medal moment of these Games. With the delegation being a joint one this year, BVC felt the necessity to provide more coverage than usual to satisfy the palates of over 116 million people and below you will be able to find some of the unmissable shows made especially for the Games which will have you on the edge of your seat, learning about the stories behind each of the athletes, laughing and engrossed in the drama that will unfold in Bunjil. You will be able to catch Olympics coverage on BVC's flagship channel, BVC One, which will turn into a central hub for the Olympic Games, bringing you the sports with Britonish medal hopefuls (with RVC and KVC showing events Estogians and the Nightomese might be interested in). You will also be able to find some coverage on BVC Two throughout the Games especially when BVC One cuts to general news updates, but most of our livestreams will be on BVC Three and Four which will suspend its normal episodes in favour of wall-to-wall sports throughout the host country for 24 hours a day - meaning whenever Electrumites are asleep, our channel certainly won't be as we will show replays of events that weren't earlier shown on one of terrestrial channels so that you can catch up on the action even if you don't have an online BVC membership. However, most people in the country do have a BVC membership and so can benefit from two additional live online streams. We will alert you on BVC One about what is being shown on each of these channels throughout the day and keep you posted on our social media. You will be able to find us on mostly all platforms, especially twii.tur - official social media sponsors of the Games.

The first three shows are related directly to the Games. Should we go in chronological order?! Let's run through the day on BVC One and Two - just for you!

AT THE GAMES: SUNRISE

BVC Two @ 04:00 - 08:00, every day

Presenters (left to right): Jonas Blakely, Helena Ehuang, Teddy Corvinus

With Electrum being five hours ahead of Britonisea - join Helena, Jonas and Teddy at the early hours of the morning over on BVC Two as we capture the events that start at 9AM sharp in Bunjil. Perfect if you're getting ready for work and would like a quick reminder of yesterday's events and what is to come...

If you're up earlier - or you didn't sleep the night before - tune into BVC Two at 4am as Helena, Jonas and Teddy (all three of them at first before they rotate during the week) take you through events in which Britonisea won medals yesterday, events that will happen during the day to look out for and events that start as early as 9am in Electrum. Helena Ehaung will be swapping her recurring role on the BVC Morning News couch for a much hotter Electrum over the next few weeks. Helena has worked with BVC for nearly 10 years now and knows the ins and outs of bringing you the news in a dramatic but straightforward way - exactly what you need with your cup of coffee in the morning. She will be joined by Jonas Blakely and Teddy Corvinus who both know each other very well having worked together on BVC's children's television station for a few years. This will be the first show, for both of them, for a show geared towards an adult audience.

The studios of At The Games: Today will be in Somer which will be home to 93 medal events at the Olympic Games, including swimming and diving, with Britonish medal hopes in Water Polo, BMX Cycling and Tennis also happening in this wonderful city.

AT THE GAMES: LIVE

BVC One @ 08:00 - 12:00 + 14:00 - 18:00, every day
BVC Two @ 12:00 - 14:00, every day

Presenters (left to right): Rakesh Hayre, Nina Kitowski, Jake Bachelor, Laila Willis, Emmanuel Ruiz Mendoza

Join the team for the main programme in Britonisea for these Games "At The Games: Live", as a very strong team of presenters bring you live coverage of the events which Britons find the most interesting and are engaged with. This also includes cutting to moments where there could be a Britonish medal as we want to bring these cruical moments to our main audience...

At The Games: Live will be on BVC One for most of the day, where television viewers will be able to watch sports that Britonisea is expected to do well in. During the show, there will be an on-screen indicator of the Britonish medal table and what position we are in. There will also be a notification if we have won a medal and it wasn't shown on BVC One - with it being announced by one of our hosts when we go live into the studio. People will know Jake Bachelor as a Saturday night television presenter. Jake will have an international audience too after his recent hosting of the 60th World Hit Festival in Aronyk, which had 13 million households in Britonisea alone watching the event. Jake will be leading the coverage of the Games, appearing during the evening session of the Games as well as commentating at both the Opening and Closing ceremony of the Games. Jake will also appear during some of the Afternoon sessions too on BVC Two. Rakesh Hayre has had some recent experience as well as he was the online host for the aforementioned 60th World Hit Festival in Aronyk. Rakesh comes from an acting background but is being snapped up by broadcasters to present due to his charming personality and knowledge of sports. Nina Kitowski is one of the leading evening time presenters on BITC. Nina's expertise is presenting in a place with a lot of pressure which she will have to do during the Morning session as we not only catch up with events just gone but also medal events that will be happening live and trust us - there will be loads to catch! Laila Willis and Emmanuel Ruiz Mendoza will be presenting the Afternoon session on BVC Two, with one of them providing assistance during Nina's Morning during the busiest of days. Laila and Emmanuel are relatively new sports journalists who will both have their first experience with presenting to a live audience. As previously mentioned, Jake Bachelor will pop in sometimes during the Afternoon sessions to help them on their way. We expect that the 10-hour coverage will be watched by up to 80% of television viewers in the country across the Games. The hosts will be joined by pundits from each of the sports to join the commentators.

The studios of At The Games: Today will be in Agri which will be home to 92 medal events at the Olympic Games. Agri will be hosting the Athletics, but also Archery and Rugby Sevens - could we see Britonish medals there? At the end of the Games, Agri will host the Closing Ceremony at the Agri Cricket Grounds.

AT THE GAMES: TODAY

BVC One @ 19:30 - 21:30, every day

Presenters (left to right): Alex Hampstead, Nicky Samuels and Kat Laurence

Join Nicky Samuels presenting a recap of the hottest events during the day at the Games into a 2-hour package. She will be joined by Alex Hampstead and Kat Laurence who will both provide their expertise and thoughts on each of the sports shown throughout the recap...

The opposite to "At The Games: Sunrise" is this show, which will be presented by Nicky Samuels. Nicky Samuels is one of Britonisea's biggest news presenters and a highly popular figure amongst younger people in the country. With a large online presence of over 1.5 million subscribers on Instagram alone, she definitely has a loud of appeal, probably done to her humour and the warmth that she gives off - but can also get into the nitty-gritty of an issue to find out a solution to it. She will be bringing that to the Olympic Games in Electrum as she analyses the best performances from Britonisea and the wider ABEN delegation and also the performances that didn't quite live up to standard. Joining her is former Britonish volleyball player, Alex Hampstead who will also be providing commentary for both indoor and outdoor volleyball coverage on BVC. Alex Hampstead will be brushing up on his knowledge of other sports ahead of his debut as a presenter for this show. Finally, Kat Laurence will join the team. People would know Kat from appearing as a sports journalist both on screen and in written form. Kat has been watching sports for as long as she was alive and for her, an appointment as one of BVC's presenting team is a dream come true. For the first couple of days, all of the three presenters will be live in the studio, but after the first few days, Kat and Alex will take turns presenting alongside Nicky until a couple of days before the Olympic Closing ceremony in Agri.

The studios of At The Games: Today will be in Port Grenville which will be home to 76 medal events at the Olympic Games, most notably Track Cycling and Gymnastics as well as Martial Arts - sports which could see Britons receive some medals.

The next three shows are based in Electrum and will be shown throughout the Games, but these shows will not show sports played at the Games but extra material that will help aid the viewing experience for fans of the Olympics...

MISSION AURUM

BVC Two @ 18:00 - 18:45, every day

Presenter: Aurum Hammad

Aurum Hammad will be presenting the show "Mission Aurum", introducing us to some of the potential Britonish medal hopefuls of the Olympic Games. We learn about the person behind the Britonish sports uniform during this show...

aurum
in British English
(ˈɔːrəm)
NOUN
Gold

Presenting daily, Aurum Hammad will be taking us through some of the medal hopefuls of the Games as we learn about up to two athletes per episode. We will see either the athletes appear on the screens around the studio or - if we are lucky - we will have them in the studios to have a chat with them about their upbringing, why they got into sports and what they hope to achieve in Electrum. In what is expected to be an emotional and thought-provoking addition to the schedule, BVC producers are hoping that it allows the audience to feel more for each of the athletes and root for them, even more, when their events are on. Aurum has had experience getting into it with people as she presents Life Stories on BVC One which is a show speaking to celebrities about the issues they have had to face throughout their careers.

The studios of Mission Aurum will be in Fairleigh-Warburton where 68 medal events will happen.

LEGENDS NEVER DIE

BVC Two @ 18:45 - 19:30, every day

Presenters: Matej Kovačević

Rugby Sevens captain, Matej Kovačević, will be presenting the following show after "Mission Aurum" called "Legends Never Die" which will catch up with some of the 91 Britonish Summer Games medalists as they reveal to Matej what it means to become an Olympic medalist to both their nation, their family and to themselves...

He's been there before. When Britonisea unexpectedly received a bronze medal in the Rugby Sevens, Brito-Izmeduan Rugby captain, Matej Kovačević was hailed as one of the Britonish heroes of the XIV Olympics. However, after a serious Achilles injury in the months leading up to the Games put him out of action, the rather disappointed Matej won't be able to defend his title in person. However, don't fear! Matej Kovačević will treat us to 45 minutes of him every day as we take a look back at some of the events in which Britonisea has won a medal over the past Olympic Games. We will also see some footage from Previous Games, including from the Electrum-New Gelderland hosting of the X Games which saw Britonisea receive its first Olympic medals ever. When looking at Matej, you might not think he's your average news presenter - but Matej is not only a rugby player, he's also a lecturer of Sports Science at Telm University - he knows how to speak to hundreds of people, we're sure he will be fine speaking down the lens of a camera!

Legends Never Die will be also filmed mostly in Fairleigh-Warburton, but will also be in Agri outside the Walkers Stadium on some of the ABEN Union's Rugby Sevens matches.

HUNTING THE HOOLIGANS

BVC One @ 20:00 - 21:00, twice a week

Starring: Asha Wilcocks, Gareth Williams

[DRAMA] A new drama is coming to BVC One set in Electrum's Agri - known for its "passionate" sports fans. Anti-Hooligan Unit 24 from Britonisea has been deployed in Agri as Electrum steps up its security around the formidable Agri Cricket Ground. Following DCI Alexandria "Alex" Graham and DC Sascha Banques, we see the Britons working with the local Electrum police to foil a plan which could cause havoc at the Closing Ceremony...

Nothing much has happened over the past couple of weeks at the Doportedas Anti-Hooligan Unit 24 - which was created after the events in the Doportedas Olympic Stadium for the World Cup qualifiers. With news that AH12 was going to be shut down and replaced by a chocolate company, the Unit has been given one last chance to prove its worth with an unusual task to travel abroad to Electrum to provide assistance with the upcoming Olympic Games. All is calm as DCI Alexandria Graham and DC Sascha Banques arrive in Agri as the pair are introduced to their Electrumite co-workers who, will act cordial to the faces of the Britons, wonder why they're even in Electrum in the first place. However, as their time in Electrum continues, they are given a big opportunity to stop hooligans from ruining the Closing Ceremony of the Games.

The drama was filmed months before the actual Games and is set in all of the host cities of Electrum, but of course, mostly in Agri...

For more about Hunting The Hooligans, please click this link...

The fun doesn't stop there, however. If you'd like to find out all of the medals that ABEN receives over the next eighteen days, feel free to click this link which will give you a full breakdown, including their winning time/points total. Check the website out!

Commentators and pundits are an important part of the Brityunik Vefecosoin Cairkovoin experience, so have a look at who those are and tell us if you recognise anyone!

We hope you have a wonderful Olympic Games and stay tuned for Day 1!

Each day will be an RP based on up to three of the above episodes, you can find the schedule here. As the results schedule can change, these can change as well.

Also confirming Hunting The Hooligans is a TV Drama only and non-canon as well :) Nothing bad will happen...without consent of course!

The Sylestonean > Sport > Olympics > 15th Summer Olympics

DAY ZERO — WHAT SYLESTONE DID:
SYLESTONE MEN KICK BUTT IN HANDBALL

MEN'S HANDBALL

Matchday One: Sylestone vs The Abovian Union @ Warburton University, Fairleigh-Warburton

Sylestone Starting VII: Ackman; Strange - Windsor - Bon; Radcliffe - Barnsley - Fosbrook (c)

Abovian Union Starting VII: Hage; Linge - Walfridsen (c) - Oen; Melberg - Holum - Hestenes

FAIRLEIGH-WARBURTON — Sylestone’s national men’s handball team have successfully managed to take care of the Abovian Union in Sylestone’s first outing in the 15th Summer Olympics, held in Electrum. The game itself was at Warburton University, where all handball games would be held on its multiple courts, and often at the same time. As a result, the crowd was somewhat limited, but that did not affect the pot one team in Group M from taking out a fifteen-goal victory and sending a message to their remaining opponents that they were the side to beat.

From the very start, Sylestone dominated. By the end of the first quarter, five Pat Barnsley goals ensured that the island nation were already 12-5 up, despite relentless pressure from the Abovian defence, with the likes of Stig Walfridsen and Roald Linge holding strong. Yet, in the end, it was nowhere near enough as Sylestone began to take complete control of the game.

But the Abovian Union didn’t give up. In the second quarter, they came out all guns firing, but the Hawthorns continued to keep the side from Aboveland and Nykipiflugpuu on the back foot, pipping them with eight goals to seven in the second quarter, ensuring the score was 20-12 with only 30 minutes to go. The Abovian Union would need some miracle to chase down this sort of deficit.

They continued to try, but the Hawthorns were once again just a bit too good for their opponents, scoring nine goals to the Abovian’s seven in the third quarter to wrap up the game, with a ten-point lead being essentially impossible to chase down with only fifteen minutes to spare. And when the Hawthorns refused to release the pressure halfway through the fourth quarter, the Nordic nation essentially gave up, collapsing in the final stages to a 38-23 loss to the side who, in part, were quarterfinalists in the most recent Handball World Cup. The Hawthorns’ victory served as a wake up call for Saltstead and Krytenia, who, on the other hand, had just fought out a tense game of which the former won, if only by two goals. With that sort of performance, it’s highly probable that a medal placing could be on the cards, despite there being a long, long, way to go.

Goals:
Sylestone:
Barnsley - 12
Radcliffe - 9
Fosbrook - 8
Loyau - 5
Windsor - 2
Bon - 1
Thompson - 1

The Abovian Union:
Hestenes - 7
Holum - 7
Melberg - 4
Walfridsen - 3
Bang - 1
Linge - 1

Schedule:
MD1: Sylestone 38-23 Abovian Union @ Warburton University, Fairleigh-Warburton, Electrum
MD2: Sylestone - Saltstead @ Warburton University, Fairleigh-Warburton, Electrum
MD3: Krytenia - Sylestone @ Warburton University, Fairleigh-Warburton, Electrum

Sail Away to the End

Port Grenville - On the first day of the Summer Olympics, all of the Pemecutanian sports fan attention are locked at the Sailing events. There were 4 events that started their races in which 2 of them are a favourites. The One-Person Dinghy events in both Men and Women number. In the last Olympic, Panca Darmawan and Widya Ayu Jayanti succeed to reached Final Stage in those events. Panca Darmawan were finished 4th in the medal race which drag his overall points into 97, only one point higher than the Bronze medalist, Ibrahim Kassab. While Widya Ayu Jayanti failed to get her best result after finished 7th in the overall points.

But today, in the first 2 races of their first day, both giving their best result so far. Panca Darmawan manage to stay in the top four after his best result on finishing in the second place on his first race. Although his performance drop-down to 43rd in the second. Jayanti also gets her best result in the first race before have to satisfied finished 31st in her second race.
Focus is what we need to get better in the race with the hopefull of getting a good wind. Be adapt with the weather and wind blows is a good advantage. This first day have given us the experience so we can understand what should we do during the next race.

- Widya Ayu Jayanti
Sailing Athlete

The success of both sailor are not followed by their fellow teammates. In windsurfers numbers, both athletes are getting a bad result. Oka Laksana Putra manage to stay in the top 20 for 2 out of 3 races that were held yesterday. His best result was 4th in the second race. While Putu Ayu Seniari best result was 16th in her third race. This result makes her have to work harder for the rest of the races.
I got out of focus in my third race which makes me drop the line. Seems like I falsely read where the wind blows. And this cost me too much. A lesson is learn. I still can do better tomorrow.

- Oka Laksana Putra
Sailing Athlete

After the previous edition where Sailing manage to put 4 final events, the sport association hope that they can get a medal this time. Although the committee itself doesn't give them the exact medal target, but they are giving 100% of their efforts to do better than the previous Olympics.

On the second day, other the continuation of the 4 events, 2 other events will be start in Sailing. The Olympics finalist, Gede Ngurah Tantra will be the center of the attention as his event number will be starting tomorrow in Heavyweight Dinghy.

Team Abovian Union Ready for Summer Olympics Debut

With entries in 262 events, the Summer Olympics' delegation arrives in Electrum with high hopes for a decent showing in the Abovian Union's second ever Olympic Games. The athletes are joined by President Kaj Torvald van Aalsbyrre, Abovian Olympic Committee chairman Arne Kuadonvaara, and a hefty portion of the team's Winter Olympics athletes. Notably absent: Nykipish president Heikki Myyrsistõlisysttästäjä, missing since July.

SOMER - The Abovian Union delegation to the 15th Summer Olympic Games arrived in Electrum earlier this week in anticipation for the nation's Summer Olympics debut. The athletes, entered in 262 total events, were joined by President of the Union Kaj Torvald van Aalsbyyre, chairman of the AOC Arne Kuadonvaara, and a select few decorated and recognized Winter Olympic athletes—among them, flag-bearer Sami Katjamäki and Women's 1500m short track record holder Ilka Sohlberg—in celebration of the team's second ever international competition.

The Games had already begun before the scintillating opening ceremony—separated into four blocks, with each one, bar the second focused on future technologies for a sustainable world, representing a significant cultural facet of the Games' host region. Team Abovian Union kicked off their inaugural Summer Games in high spirits, scoring a tight victory over Asteran in water polo and just missing out on an unlikely triumph in women's 3x3 basketball. As the evening rolled into the lofty city of Somer, the Abovian and Nykipish athletes strolled into the Somersville stadium spearheaded by 21-year-old javelin star Tero Sørensen—as seems to have become tradition, one of Team Aboveland's youngest up-and-coming stars of the future.

Speaking to Ælunder Nyttispalvelu, Abovian Olympic Committee chairman Arne Kuadonvaara stressed the importance of the team's coming-together for participation in the most anticipated sporting competition in the world.

"It's incredible to see all our immensely talented athletes from every corner of the Union come together tonight," the Vankkavalta native said through glassy eyes. "In such an important time in our history it's paramount that we realize that, at heart, we're a united nation."

The Abovian Olympic Committee had come under criticism from Abovian politicians antagonistic to van Aalsbyrre's administration, and even fiercer opposition from the Nykipish Central Government, in the weeks leading up to the Games, with the proportion of Nykipish to Abovian athletes in the Summer Olympics' delegation being multiple times inferior to that of the Winter Games' delegation's balance. The discomfort became more than just a murmur with the dawn of the AOlympic Games, where only a single Nykipish athlete, Taavi Kiirejäävõisteja, was called up to represent Team Aboveland. Immediately after that had caught headlines, attention quickly fleeted over to the disappearance of Nykipiflugpuu's leader, Heikki Myyrsistõlisyystästäjä, following an aggressive speech held just outside the former Nykipiflugpuun Keskuvaalyyttinnenkodu (central government home) denouncing the Abovian government's "snubbing" of Nykipish needs. Threatening to "make himself heard", the vigilant leader, often cited as "anachronistic" and "authoritarian" by critics but hailed by few as a strong leader, announced a surprise trip to Aboveland before vanishing from the capital Timantirkas. His whereabouts are unknown, and without a figure in place for succession to the head of Nykipish government, the icy archipelago has fallen silent, to the apparent relief of some of the thirteen Nykipish athletes of the delegation.

Kaj Torvald van Aalsbyyre, while still remaining silent over the disappearance of the head of state of Aboveland’s only autonomous overseas territory, echoed the sentiment of unity prevalent in Kuadonvaara’s message.

“Our Olympic debut last time out in Kelssek was a bit of a trial run,” he admitted, “to see how we could work together as an Abovian Union proper. After such a successful first time, it was logical to take the next step and go far further than before for the Summer Games.” He maintained that the goal of Team Abovian Union was nothing more than to represent the nation on a worldwide scale once again, and denied any political motivation for participation in the Olympics.

“We have a lot to offer to the international community and sports, especially through the Olympics, is the best way to make ourselves seen and to show what we’re capable of as people, both in and out of our uniforms. And it was very important to bring along the brave athletes who took that first step towards an international Aboveland through their participation in the Winter Olympics on such short notice back in January.”

With eighteen days of competition to go, here's Ælunder Nyttispalvelu's top picks for which of the local athletes to watch in these Summer Olympic games:

Hold your breath!
Diving

Among the highest-esteemed athletes of Team Abovian Union are the diving delegates. 3m Springboard divers Tyko Tokkela and Leo Knutsen of Iskajärvi are widely regarded as Aboveland's biggest diving talents, and at the ripe age of 20 have come across each other multiple times in various domestic tournaments, both as competitors and teammates in the synchronized springboard dive. Also making headlines is the duo of Sanna and Kaidi Storstrand, the identical twins from Iskfjellrevenbyen who, despite affinity for competing individually in 10m Platform events, always excel far beyond their individual capacity when performing as a pair.

Swimming

Also looking to make a splash in the aquatics disciplines are swimmers Sven Silje and Jarkko Bakken. The Abovians, the former a refugee of the old capital of Ayarii and the latter a well-off decathlete from the dark city of Nordenhavn, have propelled themselves to the top of many “one to watch” lists after a string of record breaking performances in domestic competitions. The battles between both competitors, frequently, but always by small margins, tilt in favor of the Ayariish man. Despite the lopsided rivalry, the two have become almost household names across the Union for their out-of-pool antics and prominent social media personalities.

Fencing

Despite the sport having risen to prominence relatively recently, the Abovian mens’ and womens’ Épée squads have high hopes of mounting a credible challenge against established Olympics fencing powerhouses, among them the delegation-to-beat of Quebec and Shingoryeo. As Anders Storstrand, of Vakkerimaa, told Ælunder Nyttispalvelu, the Abovians recognize their technique and expertise is more primitive with respect to their rivals, but they’re “confident, or at least hopeful,” that they can prove their worth with their heads held up high.

Skateboarding

Team Abovian Union’s singular entry in all of Skateboarding, Edvin Henstein, has been hailed as one of the delegation’s biggest medal hopes overall with his entry in the Men’s Street event. Harkening from the frigid streets of Bjørnskog, the sixteen-year-old—making him the youngest athlete of the delegation—,by his own admission, honed his skills with enough insistence for his parents to finally take note of his talent and “quit bugging [him]” to study for chemistry. Coming into Electrum, he’s less than reservedly optimistic at the prospect of his first chance to compete internationally.

Athletics

Surely, the delegation’s biggest hopes and dreams land in the various athletics disciplines, in the Olympics’ marquee track and field events. Domestic names from every corner of Aboveland fill the roster with wishes—and most certainly the skills—to excel: do keep your eyes peeled for Tyttebærsby natives Edvin Lundgaard and Siimon Salonen in the running events, Kylmajärvan Isak Haamer and Vakkerimaan Sofia Tymoshenko in pole vault and, perhaps most enthusiastically, Brukkifordet-born, and flag bearer, Tero Sørensen in javelin throw.

Cross your fingers!
Rowing

With little success for the men’s squad until the WRS Regatta in Zierenbrücksee, Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland, Team Abovian Union’s rowing delegates—of which half of its members have arrived mysteriously cloaked in vantablack tracksuits—have placed most of their hopes for a good result on the far more successful women’s rowers, who in preparation for the Olympics managed to muster up three wins and a third place in regattas throughout Grænfjall and Hannassea.

Handball

A newly-formed handball federation, just weeks prior to the start of the games, resulted in the AOC selecting as many athletes as they could just about find to send off to Electrum in representation of the Abovian Union. With players having had little practice together, neither the men’s team nor the women’s team have any sort of clue—based on testimonies from the athletes themselves—how well they’ll manage to hold up against the sport’s most seasoned Olympic teams. As day zero's results have already shown, with a dominant 38-23 defeat to Sylestone, it might seem that the men's team was thrown into the deep end too early.

Tennis

Perhaps the biggest interrogation mark looming over Team Abovian Union is the potential of the tennis delegates. With one of the few Nykipish athletes, Impi Nyman, representing the team among big names like Iskajärvi's Kaapo Kinnunen and Tristnattreisenille's Tere Carlsen, the question surrounding the tennis players isn't a matter of if they'll play well—rather, how far they'll advance down the brackets in such a fiercely competitive sport.

Road Cycling

As the sport where ihmyysport (human-sport) comes closest to motorsport, cycling is by far the most popular competitive activity in Aboveland fueled by protein, vitamins, and blood instead of oxygen and hydrocarbons. Team Abovian Union's cycling delegates were among the few athletes to have competed and trained overseas in preparation for their Olympic debuts. But, even though Robin Soinien of Avsidesliggendevuoret and Noora Saaremaa of Lintulahti managed to win a race each, with Kasper Karlsen and Tuisku Manner netting three podiums between them, their performances defied expectations. The latter two cyclists, both Avsidesliggendevuoretians, had been tipped as favorites by far over their teammates, and their rivals. If anything, it proves the competitiveness of the cycling grid, and surely suggests that a medal in road cycling will be hard to come by.

Equines in Water Polo?

Check. A Twicetagrian string of mares represents Diarcesia in women's water polo. From a bird's eye perspective, it is hard to see how this could happen. The Diarcesian Olympic qualifiers in water polo concluded in an unexpected fashion. The venue was flooded with spectators in anticipation of the human versus pony matchup. The favorites, the team that composed much of the XIV Olympics entry, didn't have an answer to the strikes of the likes of Dawning May. Cloud Sweeper, perhaps the most frustrating player to compete against, perfectly dissected the defense and sealed the fate of the match.

How exactly did this dark horse team take Diarcesian water polo by storm? There is no single cause. Instead, a confluence of factors brought together thirteen ponies and a coach who helped them train under a rigorous regimen and stable practice. Seeking greener pastures outside Twicetagria to better their life and/or career opportunities, the ponies took advantage of Diarcesia's existing program to fast-track citizenship towards aspiring athletes who represent the Monarchy in international competitions. An additional source of motivation is to show the naysayers the error of their ways: that the lack of opposable thumbs prevents ponies from excelling at water polo.

Following the stunning victory, the delegation was persuaded to appoint the coach of this team, Caramel Dawn, as Olympic coach too. A rationale behind the decision is to give the men's team a new and fresh way on how to approach the sport. Caramel Dawn's playbook places a strong emphasis on physicality, speed, and skill. There are encouraging signs that Diarcesian water polo is more competitive than ever before: horsepower edged over manpower once again in the Diarcesian women's opening match with 11 points against the Alezian Union's 10.

The Rugby Sevens Gauntlet

The Diarcesian men are placed in Group A with some of the powerhouses of the sport. A relative unknown here, the team along with the coach Tyler Adarsh are doing their homework and exhaustively studied the other teams in this group of death. This preparation appeared to start paying dividends after taking advantage of a hole in Krytenia's stout defense to score a momentum-swinging try. Soon after the win, the Diarcesians ran to the excellent and talented Laintsu and praised his audacity.

The win in the incredible first game is considered a tremendous step forward for the young but very adept team. They consider it a solid base from which to build their Olympic campaign. They showed confidence in their ability to perform against Tikariot on their return to the Walkers Stadium field, and hope that they'll maintain their trajectory and will be a force to be reckoned with in the rest of the Olympics.

For now however, the team is focused on the group stages. In order to secure a spot in the round of 32, they have to hone their abilities, make as few mistakes as possible, and defeat the aforementioned powerhouses. In particular, the highly-ranked Neu Engollon is expected to be a struggle.

Meanwhile, the ladies in red and gold uniform will have a bye and have additional time to prepare for their first game in Day Three versus Asteran.

The 3X3 Basketball Trudge

Diarcesia's women 3x3 basketball team played at a slow pace in their game opposing Caryton. Taking control of the smaller area of play, they moved conservatively and with deliberate cadence as the outcome was never in doubt. At times during the allotted 10 minutes, the Diarcesian on the offense would face a double team: the ball would be occasionally stolen and contribute to some of Caryton's points.

The recent formalizing of 3x3 basketball as an Olympic sport perked up interest in domestic leagues across the Monarchy. Its accessibility especially in urban areas and a format that is easy to follow and understand gave rise to both formal and informal competitions, further spreading awareness among the populace.

Games of the XV Olympiad - Day 0 Spotlight: Women's Water Polo
Free Swiss States (FSS) 7–8 Chromatika (CMT)
Team 1Q 2Q 3Q 4Q | Tot
FSS 2 2 2 1 | 7
CMT 1 1 2 4 | 8
If you ask anyone, Chromatik water polo is in its beginning stages. The national team was founded a month before the last Olympics, and they haven't really had anyone to scrim against to become better in the last four years. According to enthusiasts, the women's team is marginally better comparatively to other nations than the men's, led by Xing Su of Tihon and the keeper, Baisho Kaida, the twenty-four year old from Chromia.

In their group stage opener, the team ran into the squad from the Free Swiss States, a team ranked a few places above the Chromatiks. It would be all Free Swiss States in the first half, as Chromatik shots kept hitting the bar and their keeper. Thankfully, Baisho was on point, stopping seven out of eleven shots to have the team fall only two goals behind. They turned the corner in the third quarter, helping equalize the goal count for the quarter, and then things turned around in the fourth quarter.

Free Swiss States's point earned her third rejection at the beginning of the Quarter, and with their star gone, Xing Su and Hye-Sun An started finding their shots. With a half minute left, Xing Su earned a penalty shot. She placed the shot to the upper left corner, past the keeper's fingertips, and the Chromatiks had a come from behind victory.

Games against the Greater Vakolicci Haven and Natanians and Nosts remain, but it's one more victory than what the Chromatik team had in mind going in. Top two teams per group make it to the knockout stage - and if this team would get there, it would make national history.

Road cycling

The local poet and writer Anastasia Palumbo once described the relation between cycling and the inhabitants of our small nation as follows: “Small, insignificant and thrown against the slope, the Ortelian recognises himself in the cyclist who battles his way up the hill - knowing that all great things grow from the long and persistent grind, that all beauty is shaped by the endurance of mind and body.” Admittedly, she admires using ten words when three suffice, but it is true that Ortelians possess a specific admiration for cyclists and their culture: walking around any of the larger agglomerations, one will find various cycling stores, themed bars or one of the three (!) magazines dedicated to the sport. During the weekend, the hills which form the inland of our nation are filled with amateurs who try to tame the terrain on two wheels whilst escaping the heat and the car traffic of the Baia. Quite a few of them are marked as segments on sporting apps and are coveted testing terrain for the aspiring talents. One of the most popular challenges for them is conquering all four roads up Monte Alba, the dusty hill that peaks at about 700m, in two hours.

Although many athletes enjoy the battle against themselves, there are also a good number who enjoy the competition against one another. Sprinkled across the nation, various cycling clubs - usually sponsored by a local merchant with a simple marketing plan or an abundance of difficult to launder money - do their utter best to top their pyramid with a core of elite riders. Theoretically, these all are amateur based but it is a public secret that the best get some cash under the table. Whatever they earn, they can supplement with some decent prize money. Over the years, a proper calendar was created which gives a distinct rhythm and pace to the cycling year. Many of those races trace back their roots to the twenties and thirties and can bow themselves on a longstanding tradition: for many small towns, the finish of their cycle race marks a key festive day of the year.

If we take a look at the agenda, we see that the lion’s share of the key races are now organised for both genders, something which is only an improvement of the last two decades. This is, unfortunately, not yet the case for the Giro d’Ortelio, by all accounts the biggest date on the schedule for the top riders. Running from Sunday to Sunday, for eight days, the race combines all sorts of terrain. Considering the diminutive size of San Ortelio, most of the stages are run as crit races, with the participants riding multiple laps on a fairly short circuit - with the exception of two or three hilly stages. This contrasts with the biggest one-day races, known as the Classics, which usually are going town-to-town (and for five of the six, are available for men and women). These contain a variety of terrains. By example, Torno Alla Baia is a sprint race which runs, as the name hints to, along the bay; Gran Premio San Mamerto contains a difficult rolling terrain with the Monte Alba; Tre Valle Quarani features a lot of short, steep climbs; and Catrallo-Esca features long, grinding cobble sections. It must be noted that most of these events are shorter than the Olympic race, with the 200km mark being crested only twice or thrice a year, so the distance forms an extra challenge for our riders.

The Ortelian selection features three riders who each managed to put a Classic to their name in the last twelve months. Among them, Damiano Lagani starts with the biggest ambitions. The quadruple Giro winner, aged 31, added the GP San Mamerto to his name and did a preparatory trip to Electrum to train on the finishing Town Hall climb. He’s a tall powerhouse with broad shoulders, also suited for the TT, which makes him not just a strong athlete but also a popular man for the frontpages. The same can not be said about Marzio Pavarin, four years younger but balding and for his stature called ‘La Cavaletta’ (or the grasshopper). He’s not really a good finisher, so expect him to try his luck on the steep climbs after Silab Valley. The men’s selection is completed by Manuele Di Paolo, the junior of the three who surprisingly took the Trofeo Rossi-Valente - a race contested near the border with Nyowani Kitara. His inclusion was contested but he's expected to support the other two early in the race by providing food and drinks - it might be needed as it's a public secret that Pavarin and Lagani cannot stand one another.

No such discussion amongst our female duo: Ugolini and Castrucco are great friends and even spend their holidays together. Chiara Ugolini could well be considered as one of the leading ladies in our sportscene - she is a popular guest in tv shows, has active social media accounts, stands up for equal rights on her platforms and gets named as one of the 'most desirable bachelorettes' in the specialised press. But first and foremost, she became the third woman in history to complete the Big Five, winning the five classics. Only thing is that she made this achievement at 26, whilst her predecessors were well in their thirties when completing the bucket list. On her best with a long solo, Ugolini makes waves as a time trialist as well. Her buddy Anna Castrucco, who combines road races with mountain biking, appears far less in the spotlights but is a perfect addition - she's strong uphill and will undoubtedly sacrifice her chances for Ugolini. Do note her chainwheel tattoo on her left calf - it's there to hide a large scar from a heavy crash in her early twenties.

It is fair to say that in this selection, Chiara Ugolini might be the one that starts with a bit of ambition. In preparation of the race in and around Fairlegh, the selection took on the Road Cycling World Series - in general a fairly painful confrontation between the domestic perceived level and the international requirements. The Ortelians more often than not were condemned to chasing the bunch, hoping for a spot far down the ranks. Our female duo grew throughout the Series and were rewarded in the tail-end when Ugolini won a podium in Trobirn-Kapfenweil behind a Mytanar dominance. She did it by winning the sprint of the chasers after a difficult race. On top of that, she only lost half a minute in the ‘pre-Olympic’ TT, a sign of potential to come. The men, however, remained scrambling for a result which spelled hope. Lagani came in eleventh in Kapfenweil, but cracked on the final climb when in a better position. Still, it’s an improvement over Pavarin who ranked in the top thirty only once - making his position in the line-up contested. It goes without saying that the pressure is on for them.

Gymnastics

It is fair to say that, when taking a look at the classical Olympic sports and their incorporation into the Ortelian scene, gymnastics never featured in the spotlight in San Ortelio. Various reasons, some bordering on the scientific, other plainly simplified, have been brought forward. Some claim one needs the law of numbers - always a difficult thing in a microstate - to produce top-tier gymnasts. Others consider biases against indoor sports, a minor position in the school curriculum or a morphological disadvantage: Ortelians tend to have a higher BMI. Some even claim that the national character does not lend itself to a sport which requires a strict training regime. Yet the best argument put forward takes a look at the strong circus tradition. Those with the right physical traits and talent are more likely to steal the show in the circus ring rather than dedicate their life to a sport which never gets a large audience - the trapeze shows from the Circo d’Ortelio are Olympic level.

In all these circumstances, most of our gymnastics scene takes place in the margins. It is amateur level, once even called “occupational therapy” by a high-placed official. This is not just a matter of a lack of level for the athletes, but it also indicates that decent coaches and training methods are missing. Amidst this, there is one club that stands out and, as a logical consequence, is represented with our three only gymnasts. ‘La Trave Pesari’ started as the brainchild of Giacomo Ralentini in the eighties, a pioneer when it came to training schemes and combining education and sports. Ralentini unfortunately did not live to see three of his pupils shine in the Waterways Indoor Arena, but his spirit lives on in the style of his athletes: being son of two circus artists himself, Giacomo Ralentini embraced sports and show. One will notice how (most) Ortelian gymnasts will add show elements and especially their floor exercises often get lauded for that part.

Still, showmanship alone rarely gets one to the highest level and when we are looking for someone who can combine both elements, Laura Tonnali steps forward. The 20-year old from Pesari is fairly tall for a gymnast but remains elegant in her execution and is considered as a good allrounder. Modest and even a bit shy, she’s not too visible in the press but could score high on the uneven bars and on the balance beam. If it is about scoring headlines rather than points, maybe Evangelica Borrelo will step forward. Only 17 but with the artistry of a diva, she excels at the ground and was a personal favorite of late mister Ralentini. She’s error prone but will do everything to make an impact before leaving Electrum - hopefully inside the stadium. The line-up got completed by Gabriele ‘Gabs’ Lopeboselli, a strong athlete who will charm the judges on the rings and the pommel horse - it’s a bit unfortunate for him that there are more events which require a hint of elegance.

As the Games of the XV Olympiad kick off two companies from the Vilitan Union will have a major presence in Electrum after being selected as official sponsors and partners of the games.

Turorian Social and Media Communication service twii.tur has been selected as the Official Social Media Sponsor of the XV Olympiad and will unveil its priority threads feature first demonstrated during the recently contested AOlympic Games to the multiverse as it descends on the Terranean Coast / Bunjil for the games. twii.tur offers players, fans and media alike to interact, exchange information and share in the experience of sport together fully embracing the spirit of the Olympic Games connecting the multiverse together as it comes together for these games.

Image
twii.tur is a short message communication service based in Turori allowing users to exchange content of 140 characters or less. The service originated as a way to allow officials to receive alerts and key information such as incoming weather notifications, major events and the ability to stay coordinated during a time of crisis but was under-utilized and doubts were raised as to whether the overhead of the infrastructure was worthwhile to maintain.

As capabilities of interconnected and handheld communication devices improved, the Turorian Weather & Information Interchange (Twii) was adapted into a public facing service where users could sign up to create their own twii nodes where users would sign up to a twii group to receive all the twii messages delivered by members of that group.

Ultimately, as demand grew, a fully public release of twii came at the connected location twii.tur where all users can participate in the public twii, selecting which messages to receive by adding individual users, groups or topics to their twii.tur feed.

In addition to their coverage of sport as a core business area, twii.tur often has a physical presence at sporting events with displays such as photo booths where fans can pretend to be a World Class Footsport player or strap in behind the wheel of a World Grand Prix racing machine and twii.tur representatives instantly post the image to the users twii.tur account. twii.tur will hope to have Social booths at the majority of events at the XV Olympic Games with each official facility and fanzone having a photo booth to transform fans into the action of whichever event was being contested at that venue. At select locations guests may also have the opportunity to spin a prize wheel to earn special edition collectibles from the Olympic Games including Sunglasses, Socks, Pens and communication device grippers emblazoned with the Twii.tur and Olympic Logos. The most sought after prize, however, will be the official twii.tur XV Olympiad Collectible Pin - a must have for Pin Traders at the games and available at select twii.tur booths by showing your twii.tur account with the #olympicpins designator.

The Jovannic: Olympic Day 0 Overview

Sailing

Karina Pulsi started off with a decent 17th place in the first race, before finishing a superb 7th in the second, edging past Mytanija's Margita Prinec in the last second with a late boost.

Suniver Kalos did not have the best start, finishing 47th for both races. Suniver will hope to have a better show in the next races.

Men's Handball

The Jovannic (JOV) 32–31 Kalosia (KLS)

The Jovannic edged out the plucky Kalosians. The Jovannic would cruise to a 19-11 lead, but the Kalosians had a late scoring streak in the second period, and The Jovannic would only just hold on, mostly due to the goalkeeping brilliance of Daniel Custimaras. Nevertheless, it was an encouraging performance for the men in Orange as they looked comfortable on the field.

Badminton

Iosak Gisaloci (JOV) 21 21
Séverin Cuvillier (GUL) 7 19

Iosak Gisaloci cruised to a straight set victory against Séverin Cuvillier (GUL). He will face Leopoldo Macías (NHE), who lost in straight sets to Stanley Parker (TLI). " I think I can do better." Iosak said after the match, "I was kinda slow coming into the second set, and wasn't clinical enough near the net. "
The ladies had a frustrating day today.

Transipé Quwer (JOV) 19 21 17
Ora Tabor (LNS) 21 18 21

Ezela Werion (JOV) 21 19 19
Sarah Dauterive (GUL) 17 21 21

Both Transipé and Ezela would give their opponents and tough time but each had lacked clinicality and made unforced mistakes. Ezela Werion missed her chance to win in straight sets, giving up a 4 point lead at 18-14.

Women's Water Polo

Sirian (SRN) 9–8 The Jovannic (JOV)

The water polo team, with experience from the previous Olympics that the Jovannic participated in, the water polo team looked technically sound, but the scoring prowess of Sirian overpowered the objectively weaker Jovannic Defence. "We'll just have to improve against The Sarian" Captain Ming Lao said during a press conference after the match.

Swimming and Table Tennis is one of the events featured tomorrow, and we will hope to get good results and hopefully an early medal.

BASKETBALL — Women's 3x3

Group B
Antahbrantahstan (ANT) 14–20 Tumbra (TMB)

"Most of the Anturian badminton players, to Anturians' shock and awe, managed to pull off wins for today, with Reinhardt in Men's Singles, alongside Leilani and Sofiana in Women's Singles managing to push through even if their competitors forced them into rubber games, however, Siddiq of Men's Singles wasn't so lucky, being defeated in two straight sets against Alezian Union player Aleksi Marttila. This loss caused Anturian social media sphere to trend Siddiq by giving him encouragement and cheer messages. However, with only one game left for him, his fate will be decided through the next game, facing Aleksi again."

"Meanwhile in Basketball, the Women's 3x3 team suffered loss against the Tumbra basketball team, only managing to score 14 points against Tumbra's 20. Although getting a loss in their first ever international match, this is not the end, as the 3x3 team has yet to challenge their fellow Group B nations, Caryton and Diarcesia...."

Rossini sees red, wants more

Nobody expected Marc Rossini to make any impact in the one-man dinghy competition - least of all the man himself - so when the Aigburth-based sailor found a line and drove his boat on to a fine third place in the opening race, Rossini made the most of it on social media. The sailors in medal positions each have a coloured life-jacket - as well as a decal on their mainsail - to identify them; yellow for first, blue for second, and red for third. Pictures of Rossini grinning like a madman in his bright red life-jacket before Race Two quickly found their way around the intertubes, though they didn't help Rossini to a repeat performance, crossing the line in eighteenth.

There are still seven more races to go before the field is whittled down to the final ten; if young Rossini can keep up with his surprisingly good start, we may just be seeing more selfies in primary colours before the Games are done.

Tina Tumbles, Tumbra Triumphant

Krytenian 'keeper Tina Fellaini is an experienced player, but she had a bad day in the office as Krytenia lost their opening pool match in the pool. To be fair to Fellaini, her lack of saves said more about the excellent play of Tumbra's Amanda Royle than her own shortcomings, but it was clear that the women in the sky blue caps were simply outclassed by a better opponent.

Banija and Hispinas are still to come for the water polo women, and though qualification for the latter stages is not impossible, it was never expected in the fist place, and the Krytenian team will go home happy if they beat either of those two opponents.

A flashy titles sequence starts up along with screeching guitars and percussive drum beats. Images of past Mytanar sporting glories cross the screen: Yolanda Savic setting an Olympic record in the pole vault in Lasft and then incredibly doubling up to get a bronze in the high jump; Wes van der Stijnen – possibly the greatest road cyclist ever – winning back-to-back Island Tours; Zuzana Spevakova, the country’s best ever swimmer, climbing to the top step of the podium twice for the 200m freestyle and 400m individual medley before also getting a bronze in the 4x100m medley relay in Lasft before going on to win 3 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze at the Rushmori Games. The images then move inside, boxers Arni Tukaldev and Katrina Ujeva winning their golds in the ring, before one of their punches causes the images to shatter and the words ‘Standing On The Shoulders of Giants’ complete the sequence.

Narrator: Mytanija has produced some fantastic sportspeople over the years, a number of record-breakers and serial winners in different disciplines. Now we chronicle the experiences of the athletes which are looking to follow in the footsteps of those that have come before them and reached the pinnacle of their sports. This series will provide full coverage and insight in the run-up to, during and after the Terranean Coast/Bunjil Olympic Games. We will see what boxers, cyclists, pole vaulters, swimmers and several other Olympians go through in order to prepare for competitions; all the trials and tribulations of the Games; and see how they react to both successes and failures. Standing On The Shoulders of Giants is a series which is designed to give viewers an insider’s view to the efforts and emotions Mytanar athletes will experience and cover all the highs and lows of the Olympic Games hosted on the other side of our region in the land of our Rushmori neighbours, Electrum.

Sporting Rivalry

Narrator: Anytime Mytanija meet Sargossa in a sporting event you can be sure that there will be fireworks. It is a rivalry which goes beyond the sporting arena, with political implications meaning that tensions can run high, particularly on the Mytanar side. On the football pitch it looked like Mytanija were beginning to gain the upper hand as the national team secured a few famous victories upon their return to the international scene, but a resurgent Sargossa then flipped this narrative on its head by winning the Copa Rushmori on Mytanar soil. An unpopular result for any of a green-and-white persuasion and a sore point given the history between the two countries. It has crossed over to other events too with two of the greatest swimmers in history – Zuzana Spevakova and Adriana Abarca – having a titanic rivalry in the pool. Abarca came out on top in the Olympic Games with seven medals to Spevakova’s three (two gold and a bronze); but Spevakova was exceptional on a regional level as she dominated the pool during the Rushmori Games with 3 golds, 4 silvers and 4 bronze medals. Each nation’s greatest sportspeople end up being the embodiment of their side of the rivalry during competition and that is no different at the latest Olympic Games with the group draws throwing up early match-ups in the women’s water polo and men’s rugby sevens. Mytanars would feel they have the upper hand in water polo and the Sargossans – thanks largely to their Marquezian immigrant community – would believe they could dominate in the sevens...

“Fuck!” Emanuel Stilinovic shouts, wiping his brow to remove a piece of cut-up turf from his forehead. “They’re running all over us here! Will one of you tackle that Carter?!” Stilinovic glowers, receiving glares in return. Mytanija are struggling. Rugby sevens isn’t really a sport the country is renowned for, even if there had been interest in rugby at one time it hadn’t really ever gained long-term traction in the country like basketball, volleyball or handball had. Those who played outdoor sports were usually more interested in football or cycling or even – due to Yolanda Savic’s success – pole vault. There is a group of young players, led by Stilinovic, which coaches believe could one day do quite well in sevens. Things just aren’t going very well for them at the moment, though.

The scoreboard reads 33-0. Mytanija had taken a bit of a thumping in the one game these men had not wanted to lose by a large margin. The Sargossans had been quicker, more powerful and more intelligent in their use of the ball. They had sold Mytanar defenders up the river with clever dummies and reverse passes and the Mytanar team was left defeated and demoralised as a result. There was still time for it to get worse too, with 13 seconds left on the clock there would be one last kick-off. Stilinovic looks around and whilst his attempts to motivate his team are admirable, they appear to fall on deaf ears as the Mytanar team look disinterested, ready for the game to finish.

“Come on!” The 21 year old fly-half shouts. “We’ve still got time here, let’s get a score!”

“Easier said than done...” Veteran winger Igor Dukaric mutters out on the sideline. He had watched his team put in this performance and whilst he was disappointed he was also realistic about their prospects. “Old farts like me wouldn’t even be on the team in other countries. That’s why it’s good we have such a young core to build-on for future tournaments, I’m just here for the moral support and to fill in if Zeljko gets injured.” He explains to the people behind the camera, hastening to add that rugby sevens ‘is definitely a minority sport’ for good measure before shouting support to his team mates out on the field.

There’s time for one last play and when the ball goes out the game will be over. The Sargossans kick the ball high, looping it high into the air and prop Tomas Zuvjivuc and interchange hooker Petr Sytnikov lift Domagoj Markovic high to claim it. The 29 year old centre is one of the team’s real leaders and safely brings it down into his grasp. Zuvjivuc and Sytnikov form a ruck to hold off any challenges whilst Nenad Brganovic comes into to start the team’s final attempt at troubling the scorers.

“Zeljko, be ready!” Emanuel Stilinovic shouts to the winger outside him, close to the touchline. Stilinovic is always organising, constantly instructing his team mates and trying to put them into position. Brganovic picks up the ball and spins it out to Stilinovic who commits one defender and then ducks under his attempted tackle into open space. For a second it appears as if he’s in the clear as the hooter sounds indicating that as soon as the ball goes out of play the game will be over. Sadly for Stilinovic two burly Sargossans, Illescas and Dwyer, come to meet him and he has to accept his fate and be tackled. Markovic and Dzaja come in to maintain possession and before Stilinovic can get to his feet the pacy Dzaja is off. He had told him to be ready after all.

The 19 year old is short and stocky with the pace of a whippet. He is hard to catch once he gets into the open field and a Sargossan team that had dominated the match could perhaps be forgiven for allowing him to get into that space. Dzaja makes one tackler miss with a tricky skip of the feet before using a hand-off to leave another sprawling and reach open space. Unfortunately for Dzaja Mytanija’s nemesis Tomás Carter – a fellow winger – is there to force him wide and that means the young winger can get the try but only out on the sideline.

The scoreboard reads 33-5 as the players trudge off the field after a real beating. Stilinovic misses the conversion, the acute angle making it a difficult opportunity. He follows his team mates off the field with a face like thunder. No Mytanar wants to lose against Sargossa, least of all in this fashion.

“We’ve got to be fucking better than that,” Domagoj Markovic says as the team march down the tunnel. “A lot fucking better than that.”

***

Water polo is relatively popular in Mytanija, it’s behind other sports for the Mytanar public’s affections but it is well-respected and both the men’s and women’s teams receive a reasonable amount of funding before the Olympics in order to be as competitive as possible. During the year the men had come in 7th in the GS SuperSports+ World Water Polo League whilst the women had done a place better, ending up 6th. Both felt like they could perhaps have done a little more, finishing second place in each of their initial group stages before slumping in the latter rounds. It may have been a little disappointing but it was regarded as solid preparation for the Olympics and both could have an outside shot at medals if they performed well. For the Mytanar women the Olympic journey starts with a match-up against an opponent that the vast majority of Mytanars want to beat and beat well, no matter which sport. The Sargossans.

“Yes!” Comes a chorus of shouts from the pool as the Mytanar team gather to celebrate with 21 year old Aleksandra Mozhayeva. She isn’t a regular scorer but she has just put Mytanija 8-7 up in a match which is a lot tighter than the coaching staff would have hoped coming into it. Mytanija had been slow to get ahead and looked sluggish at times, their swimming speed well down on where they would usually expect it to be. The Sargossans were always strong in the pool though and it seemed like that particular skill had been utilised to good effect in the water polo team. They had caused Mytanija problems throughout.

“Come on girls!” Begzada Radovic, the Mytanar goalkeeper shouts. “Concentrate now! Not long left!”

Isabel San Martín has been a danger throughout the match for the Sargossans, demonstrating an unexpected scoring ability which is likely to raise some questions about just where the Mytanar squad actually are in terms of being ready for the Olympic tournament. Those recriminations will have to be saved for after the match though, the 8-7 lead isn’t going to defend itself. The Sargossans bring the ball forward as Mytanija retreat into their defensive shape and play the ball around at distance, trying to encourage a Mytanar to break out of the defensive formation and leave space for a shot. Amela Sehic gamely closes down Encarnación Alarcón to groans from the side of the pool.

“That’s what they want her to do…” Nada Urosevic says gravely. “Maintaining shape is a risk in itself but we shouldn’t be giving them looks.”

Amela Sehic is clever though, waiting for Alarcón to rise to shoot before mimicking the Sargossan and surging high with both arms aloft. Alarcón gets the shot off but Sehic blocks it. What’s even better is that she turns that block into regaining possession. The ball hits the surface of the water and Sehic claims it as she is on the way down. Mytanija have the ball back.

“Okay,” Urosevic smiles. “Didn’t expect that. I’ve always said Amela is a fantastic defender though right? You guys better show that bit on the programme as well.” She grins.

Sehic plays the ball back to Mirjana Marinkovic, the point whom a lot is thought of back home, the Zentrian is a real prospect. Marinkovic begins to direct traffic and bring the ball forward, swimming easily and displaying no signs of fatigue. There isn’t long left on the clock but they cannot rest on a slender one-goal lead. Adisa Zitnik, a 20 year old hole-set, was brought into the pool for Manka Tsigler prior to the run of goals which had brought Sargossa back into the game. It had looked like a poor decision when Zitnik missed a couple of opportunities to score and allowed the Sargossans possessions which they then capitalised on. She had started nervously but she is back in position, backed-up against Stephanie Montes and hoping for an opportunity to affect the game in a positive manner.

Marinkovic exchanges passes with the goal scoring Mozhayeva and looks to play the ball into Zitnik before thinking better of it and passing out to Amela Sehic. Sehic has recovered from her efforts in reclaiming possession and immediately looks to play the pass into Zitnik that Marinkovic thought better of. Zitnik claims it with Montes in close pursuit, the chance she had been waiting for, a half-turn with a powerful kick of her feet and a swish of the right arm has the ball flying through the air and towards the Sargossan captain Alessandra Martinez. The goalkeeper has no chance. Zitnik has her goal and Mytanija have a 9-7 lead to make life a little more comfortable.

“I can’t believe it!” Zitnik yelps as she gets out of the pool a few moments later. “I didn’t think I’d play much at the Olympics, but a goal against Sargossa… Wow!”

Nathan Frolík and Harry Sponner collided into a hug when Nate arrived at the Olympic Village. They’d been teammates coming through the Burnaby Thunderbirds/University College Burnaby system, were selected for the national team a year apart, and won the gold medals in Aeropag and Provinsk as the kids on the national water polo team. Nathan had left Kelssek to play in Græntfjall, however, bringing an end to 13 years as teammates. Now they were the veterans and Harry had been named captain. That was the first thing Nathan brought up.

“Congrats buddy. Well deserved.”

“Thanks Nate. Really. But it should’ve been you.”

“No, you don’t have to say that.”

“Really. It’s not cause I’m sad you’re not around to remind me to pay my phone bill, the brass... they didn’t want to name someone playing overseas.”

“Harry, don’t doubt yourself, mate. You’re the captain and that’s the end of it.”

Harry took a breath. He didn’t want to push at it, but Nate hadn’t been around and didn’t realize that even though he’d more than proven himself in the apparent formality of national team selection camp, the coaching staff had seriously considered dropping him from the team entirely because they just didn’t give a foreign league any credit. That talk would have to come later, and it would such because he knew Nate was happy with life at Voleln, but he’d have to come back from Græntfjall.

Kelssek water polo looks to hit a peak in Somer
SPORTS | 15TH SUMMER OLYMPICS

Istria was a grim setting for Kelssek water polo as the 14th Summer Olympics marked the first time in four Olympic cycles that Kelssek was held off the podium. The women’s team was battered in a bronze medal match that produced a hard-fought loss against Taeshan. Earlier, the men’s team had a promising winning run through the group stage but fell in the quarterfinals in overtime – to Taeshan. As nothing yet has been heard from the Taeshan national Olympic committee, this can only be a promising sign.

With Harry Sponner officially named as men’s captain, the torch has officially been passed. Players like Sponner and Nathan Frolik who made their national team debuts as understudies when the men’s team won two consecutive golds in the 11th and 12th Olympics are now the team’s leaders. The transition has been an awkward one as the last two Games have been disappointing. The next generation knows this time the full weight is on their shoulders.

There’s been less of a distinct move between generations on the women’s team – more of a consistent simmering frustration. Istria 14 broke the run of three straight podiums, but gold is always the target and falling short at crucial moments risks becoming a psychological hurdle for the team. Emma Davies, Rachel McTavish and Avril O’Shea will be who the team looks to for leadership, while head coach Jean-Francois Trepannier looks to implement a style that’s less reliant on the hole set and focused on generating shots from five metres.

“We have a lot of good shooters on this team and really using them and getting them open will be the best way to win,” said Trepannier. But the coach wouldn’t directly answer if he thought this was a team that’s getting stronger than last year’s. “Always we aim for the championship, of course, and there are many strong teams at the Olympics, of course.”

WHAT TO WATCH ON DAY 1
BY
Ivan Jurlina, Jasminka Frkić and Ivan Božić

Dear spectators, welcome to WAS-Olympic! A show dedicated of course to the Olympics in Electrum. My name is Ivan Jurlina and today I will be your guide from this studio located in Bunjil. Colleagues Jasminka and Ivan will report from the field.

And now one interesting thing. In the selection for the song that would be the “theme song” of our athletes, the song “Svijet voli pobjednike/The World Loves Winners” won.
It is performed by the pop dnace group Colonia! So let's listen to the song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=100LtGMmd7U

Lyrics- original

Stisni shake, stisni zube
budi sto jesi, pokazi shto znash
hodaj pravo, ne gubi nadu
imaj vjere, tvoje vrijeme ce doch'

Jer zhivot nije ni bajka ni san
zhivot nas tjera u novi dan
preko trnja i kamenja
ponesi boje svojih zastava

Svijet voli pobjednike
voli zlatno znamenje
kada si prvi svega si vrijedan
na tronu mozhe biti samo jedan

Na tvome putu uvijek che biti
onih shto mrzhnjom krechu u boj
njihove dushe su sitne dushe
njihova srca su bez ljubavi

Jer zhivot nije ni bajka ni san
zhivot nas tjera u novi dan
preko trnja i kamenja
ponesi boje svojih zastava

Svijet voli pobjednike
voli zlatno znamenje
kada si prvi svega si vrijedan
na tronu mozhe biti samo jedan

Lyrics- translated

Squeeze your fists, grit your teeth
be what you are, show what you know
walk straight, do not lose hope
have faith, your time will come

Because life is neither a fairy tale nor a dream
life pushes us into a new day
over thorns and stones
bring the colors of your flags

The world loves winners
loves the golden medals
when you are first you are worth everything
there can be only one on the throne

It will always be on your way
those who go into battle with hatred
their souls are tiny souls
their hearts are without love

Because life is neither a fairy tale nor a dream
life pushes us into a new day
over thorns and stones
bring the colors of your flags

The world loves winners
loves the golden medals
when you are first you are worth everything
there can be only one on the throne

Great song, amazing rhythm! Thanks Colonia and we're back to the sport.
With us is a guest in the studio, the president of the Olympic Federation of Srednjaci Mr. Tomislav Zavalić. The newly elected president of the Olympic Committee.
Mr. Zavalić, welcome.

ZAVALIĆ: Thank you for the invitation.

JURLINA: Athletes chose a song from Colonia. The song is really uplifting. Do you like it?

ZAVALIĆ: Yes, the song is great and it was made just for this Olympic cycle and these Olympic Games. I believe it will help athletes.

JURLINA: It's been a long time since the Winter Olympics. You inherited the tragically deceased former president. What is the condition of sports in Srednjaci?

ZAVALIĆ: At the time of my predecessor, the sport was still in its infancy. We had some team sports and leagues like handball, football and basketball. But later all branches of sport began to develop strongly. when it comes to individual sports then winter sports were then far ahead of the others. However, times have changed. Sports and the economy in the country are in full swing. One follows the other obviously.

JURLINA: We sent a really big delegation. There are, of course, many larger delegations at these Olympic Games. Do you think we will win a medal?

ZAVALIĆ: what is the goal of the Olympic Games for athletes? For every athlete, the goal of the Olympics is to show the maximum on the battlefield, to break their own record, the record of their nation, or in team sports to go as far as possible. Medals, even if they don't come and your name is marked PB, then you've done a good job. Getting to the Olympics is not easy. The sports season is long. Many top athletes are not here due to injuries. It's not all in the medal. But of course, who happier than me if it comes.

JURLINA : You said it nicely. And now let’s take a look at today’s schedule. You said it nicely. And now let’s take a look at today’s schedule. Swimming is the first, so we will join in with a video link with my colleague Jasminka.
Jasminka, can we talk?

AQUATICS — SWIMMING

JASMINKA: Yes, greetings from Ivana to you and Mr. Zavalić.
Here I am in the Olympic Village and our swimmers will be heading to the swimming center soon. I am talking to our representatives and here is what they told us before going to the swimming arenas.

Men's 400 m freestyle
Gordan Velić - 24 years old - NR 3:42:88
Oliver Turudić- 19 years old - PB 3:50:12

We first talked to our champion and record holder Goran Velić. Here is his statement.

GORAN VELIĆ " It is always difficult to get back to the top after an injury and surgery. I worked hard these four months and winning the rally in Plava Laguna restored my self-confidence. If I swam close to my record and national record, I think that would be enough for the finals. "

Oliver Turudić is our second adut in this discipline. Turudić is the winner of the last competition in Katanija, and in that competition he won a place at the Olympic Games. The nineteen-year-old is the big upcoming star of the swimming.

OLIVER TURUDIĆ "I am primarily satisfied with my form. i feel good and I swim well. I download my best results in about ten seconds. At a swimming rally in Katanija, I took my best time in 8 seconds. If I swam below 3:50 here it would be extraordinary. I would be very pleased."

Men's 100 m breaststroke
Franko Jurić - 20 years old - NR 60:10

FRANKO JURIĆ " I hope to swim my best time and fix the national record I hold. Those are my expectations. Anything more than that is a bonus. I believe I can make it to the finals if all goes well. "

Men's 400 m individual medley - NR 4:10:12 - NIKOLA ČAČIĆ
Mario Wager- 21 years old - PB 4:10:66
Hrvoje Pešić - 19 years old - PB 4:12:16

JASMINKA : Yuko Husamatzu, our champion and record holder in this discipline, is with us. Yuko swam this record this year at a rally in Blue Lagoon. She improved the old record from Adelina Frljić by 12 hundredths.

Women's 100 m butterfly
Yuko Husamatzu- 23 years old - NR 55:70

YUKO HUSAMATZU " Nakon mitinga u Plava Laguna preskočila sam miting u Dormatisi i plivala jedino u Kataniji. Iako sam pobijedila u toj utrci, nisam bila zadovoljna sa vremenom. Pregledali smo snimke sa te utrke i uočili propuste u tehnici. Puno sam radila kako bi otklonila taj problem i bila bolja. "
YUKO HUSAMATZU " After the swimming competition in Plava Laguna, I skipped the rally in Dormatisi and swam only in Katanija. Although I won that race, I wasn’t happy with the time. We reviewed footage from that race and spotted flaws in the technique. I worked hard to fix that problem and be better. "

Women's 400 m individual medley- NR 4:37:30
Hether Hudson - 25 years old- PB 4:38:50
Irina Privalova
- 22 years old- PB 4:40:52

JASMINKA : We will also have the first relay. It is a women's relay race in the 100 freestyle.
The relay looks good, well-coordinated and we hope for great news.
Women's 4 × 100 m freestyle relay (MEDAL)
Adalija Julić/ Vanta Ana Margetić/ Sanja Dolenc/ Ivana Rakić

JASMINKA : Here, so much from me from the swimming competitions for today. I just need to mention that the matches of the first round in water polo continue.

JURLINA : Jsminka thank you for this comprehensive report. And we continue with the schedule for today. It's time for a new sport.

IVAN BOŽIĆ : this is a sport in great expansion in our country. The league consists of 12 clubs and there are as many rallies in the country. Every club must organize a rally. Of course the champion is the one who wins the most points. The Dormatisi Blue Stars club is defending the individual title and Bojan Datić is the individual champion.
Chromatica has hosted one of the largest international competitions, the Black Arrow Classic. All three of our best representatives took part in that competition, and Olly Weber and Bojan Datić passed into the top 16 competitors.
Weber and Datić just met in the top 16 and Weber was better 6-2. Weber comes to his second medal. He first won silver in the team competition and then bronze individually.

When it comes to champions, of course, Guo Wang is a two-time champion and the country’s absolute record holder. She has the most wins in the domestic championship and last year she won in 10 of 13 appearances. She is the first winner of the Diamond Rally. She is a member of the club "Sagittarius Tower", which won the title of national champion.
Our girls competed in Chromatica at The Black Arrow before the Olympics.
Guo Wang and Duda Gurtović went into the top 32 but still failed. As a team, the Srednjaci were stopped in the quarterfinals.

BADMINTON

IVAN JURLINA : In yesterday’s individual competition, it was not bad for our representatives. Today is a new day, double doubles are being played. Let's see which of ours will perform. Herešulina will also play all competitions.
Most are expected from the mix of double pairs, Filip Oršulić and Dajana Herešulina.

DAJANA HEREŠULINA "I feel great and strong. The organization is perfect. All the athletes have the best conditions here and it is a real pleasure to be a part of this story. I don’t feel tired and I think I have a lot of energy for the whole tournament."

BASKETBALL

IVAN BOŽIĆ : We will follow the 3x3 basketball competition with great excitement and expectations. A very attractive competition that is gladly seen on our television. As all basketball fans know, WAS follows domestic 3 X 3 basketball competitions on our Channel 7. So it will be at these Olympics, there are basketball broadcasts on Channel 7.

BASEBALL-SOFTBALL

JASMINKA FRKETIĆ : When we talk about baseball in our country, we immediately think of the Neptune Tara team. A great team that has notable results at international competitions. The baseball team is mostly made up of players who play in Neptune Tara. In addition to these young players, there are some more experienced on the list who can help their wise advice to the younger generations.
Our players play the first match against Darkmania and in group P he is also a big favorite for the passage of the group Quebec and Shingoryeo.

BOXING

IVAN BOŽIĆ : We will have several representatives in boxing and it will be very interesting. In conversation with them, everyone expressed readiness and they feel great. We believe that one of them will make a bigger result.
Follow boxing because excitement awaits us in the martial arts ring. And here's who will have boxing matches.
Our biggest star Tara Legović is also entering the ring. Legović is the absolute regional and state champion.

HANDBALL

JASMINKA FRKETIĆ: women's handball is a national sport. The Master League is the most watched sporting event in the country. All Master League players are available to the coach. Antonija Ružić is the first name of handball in general. She carried the country's flag at the opening of the Games. A great opportunity to prove yourself is here at these Olympics. at the world championships the girls failed to get a medal but here they could. The group they are in is quite difficult.

ANTONIJA RUŽIĆ : " It was a great honor to carry our flag at the opening of the games. I will remember this whole experience from the stadium for the rest of my life. The group we are in is very difficult considering that it also hosts games. But if we play the soy game, then we can beat everyone. I’m glad we’re complete and have no injuries.

VOLLEYBALL — INDOOR and BEACH

JASMINKA FRKETIĆ : this is a sport that is developing at lightning speed. Incredible progress has been made in the last two world championships. At the first World Cup in which we competed, we were a national team against which the winning points were already recorded in advance. in the second championship we have already achieved several respectable victories. Here at these Olympics we are not medal favorites but we are awkward and strong enough to be able to complicate someone’s situation. And who knows, maybe the stars will match us and we’ll go far.
Græntfjall is the favorite of this group and the fight for the second position is open.

Marong Sports Television is a recently new sports-specific television venture in Banija, having launched just three years ago and having already bought one of the most valuable sports TV packages in Banija- a package for half the XV Summer Olympiad from the Bunjil Host Committee, to cover half of the sports in Banija and all of the Games in the Busoga Islands.

It is a massive coup for the channel, and a big disruption to traditional media services in Banija, where live sports coverage, especially for international tournaments and events, is traditionally dominated by Public Television in the country. As part of their split with Banijan Public Television, they were able to broadcast the Opening Ceremonies live.

As part of an Olympic preview special after the Opening Ceremonies, Marong Sports Television ran the following interview with Ousman Kaba, the longtime Executive Chairman of the Olympic Committee of Banija, who was the Co-Chairman of the Istria/Orean Host Committee. It is a wide-ranging interview on a number of topics, and the following parts focuses on Kaba's perception of the Istria Olympiad, and what he wants his legacy to be.

Cameraman: "And we're LIVE! In 5... 4.... 3.... 2......."

Elizabeth Ayange: "Hello Banija! And welcome here to Somer in the Bunjil region of Electrum, the host region for the XV Summer Olympic Games. We are sitting here today with the Executive Chairman of the Olympic Committee of Banija, Mr. Ousman Kaba. He has a long resume that we don't really need to get into, but many of us, at home and abroad, know him as a member of the Executive Committee of the Olympic Council, as well as the man in charge behind the Istria half of the XIV Summer Olympiad.

Mr. Kaba?"

There is a small live studio audience, of about 50 people, all Banijans, who give him a polite applause as he enters the room.

Elizabeth Ayange: "Ousman, let's dive right into this. There's a lot to dig into when it comes to Banija and the Olympics, and your centrality and importance to that. But, let's take a trip down memory lane for a little bit. Let's go back to the XIV Summer Olympiad, when we really came onto the Olympic stage, almost out of nowhere, to co-host the Games with Orean and then earn 22 medals of our own. What made you decide that we should bid to co-host the Olympiad?"

Ousman Kaba: "I've always thought that Banija had generally underperformed when it came to the greatest multi-sport event on Earth- the Summer Olympic Games. Had never won a summer medal besides our bronze medal in baseball at the XI Summer Olympiad at the Aeropag Games. As you will all remember of course, that was a demonstration event at those games, before baseball was back on the Olympic programme. Therefore, it doesn't even count.

I've seen how Banijan team sports have risen through the ranks over the years. Success in baseball, of course. But we were building sustained success in other team sports. Gridiron. Soccer. Basketball. I said, why can't we do this in the Olympics? The Olympics have always been popular on television, and we've been strong at the Commonwealth Games. But for whatever reason, we've never been able to transfer that kind of success over to the Olympic Games.

It's a brilliant competition. But we are capable of success here. But co-hosting an event like the Olympiad just for sporting success is not enough of a reason. It's too much investment, time, and money. Goals have to align on multiple levels. The government, especially the Katikkiro Kobe Azizi, wanted an event to show off the country. To show that we were a rising star. And officials in Istria wanted to showcase Banija's biggest city, give it Olympic City branding that we will have forever.

Goals aligned. The timing was right. But we couldn't simply throw a games together by ourselves. The know-how and expertise simply did not exist in country. So we put out feelers, were connected with Orean officials from Liventia, and the rest is history. The Games were a blazing success for the city, the region, and the country, both on and off the field. I wouldn't change a single anything.

Elizabeth Ayange: "Alright, that makes sense. Let's shift gears a little bit. There was criticism of the OCB, in Olympic circles last time around, over not sending a full delegation to the Home Olympics. We're past that, of course- but we see here that the OCB, for the first time ever, has sent a full delegation to the XV Summer Olympiad. How important is that for our Olympic progress? What is the meaning of that?"

Ousman Kaba: "Those arguments about the number of athletes in our delegation last time around, as far as I'm concerned, do not matter anymore. Those Games are done and dusted- we are here in Bunjil to celebrate this beautiful region along the Terrenean Coast, as well as support and celebrate Banijan athletes competing for glory.

I think the fact that we have sent a full delegation this year though, is a big deal. Reaction to the size of our delegation last time had nothing to do with our decision-making. Here was our thought process- how do we make the games more accessible to Banijans, more interesting to Banijans? And the answer was making sure we had the best athletes in every single event- not just 'the most popular' events. If like sailing, or rowing, or something like that, where we didn't compete in Orean- that is something where you'll see us compete here in Bunjil."

It is worth noting here that with the explosion of Marong Sports onto the broadcasting scene, the Olympic Commitee of Banija decided to send a full delegation to the game to have enough inventory of Banijan athletes to sell worthwhile bundles to both Banijan Public Television and Marong Sports. The bigger the inventory, the more money each package would be worth- and the higher they could drive bidding prices. While Banijan sports fans support the move, the dollar motive is the generally accepted reason across the country for the full delegation size.

Elizabeth Ayange: "OK Ousman, let me switch gears here a little bit. What did you think about the Opening Ceremonies? Were you surprised to see Banijans play such a prominent role in the ceremony, leading the parade of nations alongside Liventia? And what was the rationale behind the selection of Namakula Kawesa to hold the Olympic Flag?"

Ousman Kaba: "The Opening Ceremonies were beautiful. A job well done to the organizers here in Bunjil, as Electrum is a nation that knows how to throw a party in terms of the Opening Ceremonies. The artistic portion was particularly fantastic- especially the music! My grandkids can't get enough of Capture The Flag- what a catchy song.

As for Namakula's participation holding the Olympic Flag, the choice was obvious. When we were approached, what athlete better exemplifies the Olympic spirit than her? The first woman to play for the national soccer team. Spent well over a decade as the #10 for the national team. World Cup 86 Champion. WCC Hall of Famer. Top 10 all-time for Banija in goals, #1 leader in assists. An elite athlete in her main sport. And then, we all saw her at Istria/Orean. Picking up a silver medal as part of the Track relay team? And now she's coming back here- not in track, but for a long awaited medal for the women's team."

Elizabeth Ayange: "She is a great choice for Banija. She's broken so many glass ceilings in our country in sport, I am glad that I was there to witness her getting honored as she properly should."

They spoke further about the Opening Ceremony, and about the athletes who walked into the stadium. And then, the conversation eventually turned to the sports on the field.

Elizabeth Ayange: "Only a few of Banija's athletes competed on Day 0, Ousman. I know you spent a lot of time here at the Olympic House, but I'm sure you got to watch quite a few of them. Which of our athletes do you think did the best on the opening day of the Olympiad?"

Ousman Kaba: "Well, let's take a stroll through the team sports list. Our 3x3 women's basketball team looked particularly dominant against Felinetopia, something that I was extremely happy with. Chibuike Obasee was particularly deadly from deep, going 4/5 on 2 point shots. You've only got 2 minutes to score 21, and our ladies hit 21 just as the final buzzer was sounding. Out of 16 games played today, only one other team hit 21, showing how hard it is to do so. We keep moving the ball like we did today, and this 3x3 team is gonna go pretty damn far."

Elizabeth Ayange: "They were particularly impressive against quality competition in Felinetopia. Only one game today too- so they can stay rested. What are you most excited for on Day 1? What should Banijans look out for- and what athletes do you think can surprise?"

Ousman Kaba: "Well, this may be a surprise- but I'm particularly excited for men's skateboarding. Now, we aren't exactly a country known for our skateboarding prowress- but it is going to be a fascinating competition. We have some decent athletes who, while they are not conventional favorites to medal, will be quite fascinating. Our men's street skateboarders- Gaston Makeba, Osendé Tilmidja, and Ndukong Moussa, all have a compelling story. All growing up in urban Aissa(of all places!), they literally grew up as neighbors.

They skateboarded wherever they could, with Aissa not having an actual skatepark at the time. No formal training, no huge skateboarding competitions, no massive number of halfpipes or whatever in the city. How'd they get good enough to qualify for the Olympics? They simply started throwing their videos up on the internet, and started a campaign to get a skate park built in the city. When the Aissa City Council declined to spend public funds on it, they were able to fundraise money from enough local benefactors, with Aissa United FC eventually offering to pay half the cost and build the skate park.

So you talk about earning your own way- they earned their way from the ground up, simply from a love of skateboarding. To go from that point, and to cap it all off with an appearance at the Olympics- well, a job well done to those three men. A fun story to follow.

Elizabeth Ayange: "Are there any names competing tomorrow that you think will become household names for Banijans by the end of these games?"

Ousman Kaba: "We're sending plenty of tremendous athletes who have the opportunity to do that. But take a look at one name tomorrow- Bora Jawara. Many Banijans were introduced to him on a large-scale basis for the first time at the Opening Ceremonies, as he held the flag. He's competing in seven different events here in these games, and certainly leading the charge for Banijan swimming.

Jawara's got two events tomorrow that are among the most competitive of the Games- the men's 400m freestyle, and the men's 400m individual medley. You're likely going to have upwards of 90 participants in the heats for these events, showing just how deep the pool is(no pun intended) for highly talented swimmers. So to earn a medal in a swimming event is a particularly impressive feat. And yet- Bora Jawara has the confidence to be the next Banijan swimming star. He's got the swagger. He's got the confidence. He's got the skill. But so much of the Olympics is mental- he's gonna need the performance of a lifetime against a field like this. He's a favorite, but one of many. How can he do against the very best of the best?"

After that, and then talking about a few other athletes, they opened up the interview to questions from the audience. They held a Q&A with the 50 or so people in attendance for about 30 minutes, before they wrapped up the interview.

The Best of Letters to the Editor: Olympic Opening Ceremony

The Best of Letters to the Editor is a recurring segment in the Saari satirical magazine, The Parsnip. It seeks to highlight the pettiest, grumpiest and melodramatic contributions to right wing newspaper comment pages.

The Terror of White Blazers
Yesterday, over 500 Saari athletes proudly walked behind Sofia Antonis or Janus Christiaan - who have seven medals Olympic between them - to rapturous applause in Electrum. However, the joy quickly turned into distress as it became apparent that the Saari delegation may have committed a fashion faux-pas.

"I have never been more ashamed than to see the best that The Sarian had to offer march out in white blazers. The Green trim only made it worse. I didn't realise we were a team of colour-blind mob bosses. Do better." (De Telegraaf)

"But what was there to say about the white blazers. I thought the parade of nations had put me to sleep and I'd had a nightmare. Truly ugly" (De Telegraaf)

"I hope they don't serve red wine at the post-opening ceremony reception. Then again, I hope they do." (Bondstad Vandaag)

"I watched the opening ceremony and I don't know what all the fuss is about. Mind you, my TV broke just as the Sargossan delegation entered the arena. A shame - I've always liked seeing The Sarian team enter in their dark green blazers." (De Metrokrant)

"I don't know why these Saari athletes are wearing white - a colour traditionally associated with purity - when stories of their sexual exploits in the Olympic village will be populating the gossip section for the next month." (Saari BEN)

"Frankly, I am surprised that Saari athletes are allowed to wear white anymore. Expect the woke brigade to cry any day now!" (De Prymeur)

"Just be glad they weren't wearing the latest ugly flag of the LGBTJIHFOEWQOIEGWYUWFEGGORUUPORHYROGUUOUEGUYWGDGCGU communuty" (De Metrokrant)

"If I wanted to see barely-pubescent boys dressed like pimps, I would attend a student society night at my local nightclub. Don't want it on my TV." (De Telegraaf)

"I like how we stood out. I don't like how it was for the wrong reasons. We need an urgent commitment that dark green will make a comeback or I shan't be watching any further." (Saari BEN)

A Shark Intake of Breath
For many, the cameo appearance of a dancing shark was a fun nod to an Electrumite movie franchise. Those people clearly play fast and loose with people's lives.

"Woke culture is prioritising saving the lives of sharks over saving the lives of our children. Couldn't make it up." (De Prymeur)

"Dancing sharks? Sharks are dangerous, very inappropriate to make light of this. Expected better." (Bondstad Vandaag)

"An important message of conservation ruined by a man in a badly designed shark suit. Save the mascot costumes for the sports." (De Telegraaf)

A Song Too Far
Montereu, a girl group from Kalosia, delighted crowds across the multiverse with their upbeat and polished performance in the opening ceremony. The highly credentialed lay-music critics of The Sarian had a different point of view.

"Don't Electrum have any singers of their own? Three randomly selected bums off of the street would have better harmomies than the Kalosian warblers." (De Metrokrant)

"Frankly, I can see why they came sixth in WorldVision. Very bad singers." (De Prymeur)

"One song was plenty. The Opening Ceremony was long enough and they weren't very good." (De Telegraaf)

"The Olympics is a show of strength and the peak of masculine ability. WorldVision is competition for annoying homosexuals. I don't think the band were a good fit." (De Tijden van Bondstad)

"The only thing likely to make me take the flag off of the flagpole in my garden is being told to 'proudly fly my flag' by that group of annoying singers." (Bondstad Vandaag)

"It was nice of the organising committee to show to young boys and girls that literally anyone can perform at the opening ceremony Olympics." (Bondstad Vandaag)

"If my grandson played the kind of music that the Olympics tried to highlight, I would be truly upset. Young people have lost the ability to recognise and celebrate musical talent." (De Tijden van Bondstad)

"The lyric 'together in Electrum, we're going to win' is nonsensical. Only one person will win in each sport; that's the point." (De Telegraaf)

"Five-hundred drums was excessive. Same effect would have been achieved with fifty, and there would be money in the budget to book a better band." (De Metrokrant)

"Gertrude Pullman would have been better." (The Parsnip)

4th Ostankin Channel. Program "A Hour about Sport". 9.8.1993. 15:02.

Good afternoon, dear viewers of the Fourth Channel! We are back with another hour of sport. But before we get started, I want to inform you, that the program hosts have changed. Vlasiy Mychalkin, uhh... went on vacation, and Denis Savelyev... umm... he is... resting at home.
So, let's greet our new presenters, Vladimir Bubnov and Agafokl Cherenkov!

VB: Dear viewers! I want to congratulate you all! We finally don't have to wait any longer for the biggest sports event in the world.
AC: The excitement of waiting finally was changed to the constant worrying about our athletes' performance.
VB: You're damn right, Agafokl. But the real stress and tensions would come only on the next day. For now, let's enjoy the colorful opening ceremony at the Somersville Stadium at the town of Somer.
AC: Yes. The opening ceremony is a worldwide event with many state leaders to visit it. Even the Great Sower and Plowman of our State decided to attend it along with some ministers. Dear viewers, let's see this ceremony together with the top brass of our state.

Somersville Stadium, Somer, Electrum. 15th Olypmics Opening ceremony.

The ceremony is attended by:
Sator I, Great Sower and Plowman of the Ostankin (age 52)
Monika Averina, Great Sower Sator's wife, Sower-consort (age 46)
Roman Herenser, current First Minister of the Ostankin (age 36)
Anatoliy Vinyas, former First Minister (1983-1989) and current Minister of Propaganda (age 48)
Panteleimon Aleinikov, first ever (1964-1965) First Minister of Ostankin (age 73)
Bryachislav Tomov, Ostankin's Olympic Committee President (age 44)
Stanislav Rumas, Ostankin's Olympic Committee Vice - President (age 54)
Nikolay Nekitin, Ostankin's Olympic Committee Secretary General (age 56)

GSS: Finally, I went abroad for a several days. I'm really need a rest from my hard work. At least, I will see the world in my old age.
PA: My Great Sower, you're not too old yet. You still have decades of years to rule and rule.
RH: Great Sower Sator, of course it's good that you are resting to gain strength, but have you thought about our nation? For the first time in many years, the country is left without its leader. Everything can occur!
GSS: I see, you already forgot when I went to another state last time. It's definitely not hard to forget, cause my last international visit occured in 1977. 16 years is a really huge amount of time. A whole new generation has appeared during that time, for example. And I only turned 36 in 1977. I was the same age as you are now.
Don't worry about our glorious Ostankin. A random bunch of peasants couldn't in just 3 days destroy the state, which was built for 29 years.
RH: Oh, alright. What a dumb thought I had! I guess I was just very nervous, It's my first ever foreign trip, you know.
GSS: Be calm, Herenser. F̸̧͖̣͚̝̅̚͠I̵̛̱͔̪͆̇̈́R̶̬̮̅̍̾̆͛S̵̼͕̭͕̄̀̅̅͜Ț̵̛̰̲̗͖̐́͆̈́.̵͍͕̹͗͘ ̸͖̹̈́̑̽͋͝M̷̪̯̭̰̪͘I̸̫̬͙͙̐͋̽̈Ñ̴̲̞͕̰Ì̸̟͖͖̥͔̊͗̈́̎Ś̴̯͚͓͖̓̈́̈͝T̴̤͉͗̋̆̾͠E̵͓͚̮̽̅̋̊̕R̸̬̘̄̈́͐̕̚ͅͅ.̴̱͇̊ ̴̜̆S̸̪͕̣͘͠H̴̢̧̹̣̐̿̕Ò̶̙̲̘̲́̔Ǘ̷̩L̸͙͕̮̍̂D̶̦̟̘͓͎̒̾́.̶̖͚̩̬̰͌̒̓͛̌ ̴̲͋S̴̲̚T̴̹̲̅̓̇̒̕A̵̢̯̻̒̓̃̍͝Ŷ̸͍̲͌.̶̮͒ͅ ̷͎̲̪̝̻̆C̷̥͖̣̝̆͆O̸͔̾̄̔L̶͎̻͉̞̈̀̃̌̏D̶̺͛̀̄̕͜͠-̶̧̻̈́̽̈B̸̗̹̮͒̀̍̋Ļ̸͔̰̯̔Ṑ̶̫͇̪̘̈́̽̆Ǫ̸̢͉̒̏D̴̺̤͕͖̃̚͝Ê̴̺͎͊̋̐̈́D̵̠̝͈̮͆ͅ.̸̺̽̓ ̷̨̻̤̿̈̓͐
It's better to talk about our sports, as we are attending Olympics opening ceremony. ATTENTION, I'm asking everyone. From your point of view, how many medals our athletes will take?
RH: Naturally, about 15-20, I think. Four of them are golden.
GSS: Five golden medals. *chuckles*
MA: Well, darling, you know, I'm not interested in sports like you, so I couldn't say exactly, how good our performance would be...
GSS: That's all right, Monika. You will watch the Olympics and enjoy the successes of our athletes with me. I will help you with that.

some minutes later
RH: I'm starting to get bored. When we will finally see our great delegation?
GSS: We wouldn't wait too long for it. The nations with the names starting with the letter O are marching now.
RH: So it means, that our athletes should be almost here. Oh, maybe, it's our delegation currently marching? Oh, no. Not yet. It's... Omerica.
GSS: Yes, it means, that our delegation is coming up next. I can see our flag already.
EVERYONE, get ready to greet our glorious delegation. Stand up, raise you hand and wave to our athletes.

Everybody, except Panteleimon Aleinikov and Anatoliy Vinyas (who are too busy playing chess), stood up and greeted Ostankinian Olympic delegation.

Image

GSS: *sitting down* Oh damn. I thought that our costumes would be way better than that. Why they are so bright? Why the shirts are red? It's not even our national colour. Our colours are black and white. I think, the designer of those suits definitely deserved a vacation trip... to the Chelyabinsk XVIII.
RH: With those fake smiles and awful costumes they definitely looked like brainwashed cultists.
GSS: You are right, Roman. They are brainwashed by TV propaganda as well as all our population (even you are completely brainwashed, Roman). Sometimes I even think that I'm not a leader of a country, but a leader of a cult.

Meanwhile, Aleinikov and Vinyas are still playing chess. They already played 4 games, all of them were won by Panteleimon.
PA: Checkmate!
AV: Again? For the fifth time?!
PA: Kiddo, what did you expect from the old chess grandmaster? You thought, I'll go easy on you?
AV: P... Probably.
PA: You're so naive, Vinyas! I'm still can't understand why our Grand Sower chose you as a First Minister and how did you managed to last for six years in this position.
Moreover, you just weren't allowed to be appointed as a minister of Propaganda, cause you can't stand it! You can be easily influenced, brainwashed, and turned into a zombie with this propaganda!
RH: Hey you two! Shut up and stop playing chess! This is disrespectful!
GSS: Roman, they wouldn't listen to you. Don't forget, that they were First Ministers too. Here, look, how it's done.
V̷͚̦̙̍͆Ỉ̵̦͕͈̉̋͂N̴̨̝̈́̈́͝Y̷̧̨̡͕̺͙͛̇͂̾̊̆̊͠͠͝Ȃ̷̧̩̙̗̠̠̙̙̒͠͝Ś̷̛͙͍͐́̎͗͛͐̒̚!̸̣̩̗͖̖̓̀̀͗̎̄͘
AV: *scared* Alright, alright, Great and Almighty Sower! I wouldn't play chess anymore now! Don't fire me, please!
GSS: Ha-ha, that's always works perfectly.

A Hour of Sport studio. 16:09.

VB: It was really a pleasure to see our glorious delegation marching among the strongest athletes in the world.
AC: Moreover, many of our sportsman definitely will fight for the right to name themselves the strongest in the world, like our flag bearer Boris Haritonov, or our fencer Polina Pekoeva.
VB: Some of them already entered that difficult fight. For example, our badminton players. Grigoriy Ralsin, Emmanuil Levin and Marina Koikova pleased the country with their victories. But the most interesting part is yet to come, cause our strongest badminton player Celestia Ledyakhova recieved a bye and has a few more days to prepare for the competition.

AC: Our women's basketball team made a great job too today, defeating Polkopia. But we're talking about 3x3 basketball...
Women's 3x3 basketball. Group E. Matchday 1.
OSTANKIN 19-13 Polkopia
Points: Monika Satorina - 8, Lilia Yegorova - 5, Kalina Ostyakova - 3, Anfisa Afrikina - 3

VB: Men's Rugby team, however, only managed to upset us, suffering a humiliating defeat from Scornerse. 33-7!
AC: Well, it's not so humiliating as it seems. This result was really expected, considering that rugby completely is foreign and not our national sport. The first rugby match was played only 30 years ago, and the national league was founded only 8 years ago! Moreover, this league is absolutely not professional, so our olympic teams in this sport are fully amateur. I can say, it will be a great success, if our rugby players manage to secure fifth place in their group.
Men's Rugby sevens. Group D. Matchday 1.
Scornerse 33-7 OSTANKIN

VB: Agafokl, you said that rugby is not our national sport. But which sport can be called as our national?
AC: Of course, it's football. We have really high hopes for our football team.

Image

We have many talented players in our national team, six of them are from the strongest Ostankinian club, Spartak Telecenter. They are: 1 goalkeeper (Gorakhin), 1 defender (Romantsev), 1 midfielder (team captain Titov) and 3 strikers (Nikiforov, Byakovskiy and Pyatniskiy). As you can see, Spartak has very powerful attacking line, so it's not surprising that this club is fully dominating our national league now. Or they just more wealthy then other clubs, in modern football, the money decide everything...
VB: Don't forget about our naturalized player Harper Elliot, He played in several top foreign leagues, so he will definitely help us to reach the medals.
AC: So, as we completed the analyze of our squad, let's talk about our perspectives. We are drawn in the group B, with Scotatrova, Pratapgadh and the winner of the match Lisander/West Phoenicia (this match will occur tomorrow). The bookmakers already put our national team on the first place in a group, so we're hoping that their predictions will come true.
VB: As you mentioned tomorrow's sports events, I would wish good luck to all athletes, who will be competing on the first day of the Olympics. Especially, I wish good luck to one of our hopes, Polina Pekoeva, who will compete for the medals tomorrow in the women's individual Epee.
AC: I'm wishing good luck not only to our sportsman, but also to our dear viewers of the Fourth Channel. Good luck to you all! Tomorrow will be a hot and intense day, so take care of your nerves and don't turn off the TV!

The Hopal Herald Sports

The Flame has been lit, the Games have been Opened, Here's a Preview of Team Hopal on Day 1 of the Olympics

The Olympic Flame has been lighted, the Games have been declared open here in a spectacular event here in Electrum. With nods to the Indigenous Peoples of Electrum, the need to build an environmentally sustainable world, and the origins of the City of Somer (where many of the Olympic events will take place, which included the Opening Ceremony) and Electrum. The Torch Relay ended in Somer's Somerville Stadium with two Paralympic athletes, marathoner and Paralympic Gold Medalist Chris Wilson brought the Olympic Flame into the Stadium doing a lap around before giving the Olympic Flame a to blind triathlete named Ellinor Blaine who would light the tree-shaped Olympic Cauldron. It was truly a marvelous event, and it kicked off 18 days of competition here on Electrum's Terranean Coast, or as it called by the natives, Bunjil. Here we will preview what you can expect on Day 1 of competition.

Let's start off with Hopal's first real chance at a medal here at these games. In the Men's Road Race cyclists will take the difficult journey from Nassau Bay to Fairleigh which will take them through many gorgeous and some difficult to traverse landscapes. Starting on the beautiful coast of Electrum cyclists will ride inland to the town of Geldectrum before going down through the Silab Valley before climbing many difficult slopes before making their way to the City of Fairleigh, which they will circumnavigate five times before making their way to the finish line at Fairleigh Town Hall. There will be five Hopalians in the Men's Road Race and almost all of them may well have chance of winning a medal, and none of them may. It was an up and down season for Hopalian Men during the GS SuperSports+ Road Cycling World Series. It was a bad start to the season in a close race for Hopal's Justin Yuriyama who got 15th in the first race of the season in Háttmark–Laafjörður with less than a minute differentiating him and first place Luka Petrusic. It would be a better result in Kriterium von Schutzenphalia where Yuriyama got a similar time as in Háttmark–Laafjörður but managed to get 5th place. The young Josh Jones surprised us in that race 13th in a time just over a minute from Yuriyama's result. Hopalians Garret Munson and Aaron Huvertes had been getting bad results up to this point in the season, with Huvertes not finishing the Háttmark–Laafjörður race and passing out in the middle of it, an embarrasing moment for all involved. The two of them would bounce back getting 6th and 17th respectively in the Coral Coast Classic and Yuriyama getting 8th. But the Hopalians would drop out of the top 15 in the Schutzenphalian Diamond Race with Huvertes and Munson getting 18th and 19th respectively and Yuriyama getting a dismal 27th. Munson would rebound in Folte–Kyrkdorf getting 6th place, but Huvertes and Yuriyama wouldn't getting 27th and 41st respectively. So the pressure would be on them in the Tour of Zelena Planina and they wouldn't really do that. Huvertes got the best result among all of the Hopalians getting 14th while Munson and Yuriyama got 17th and 20th respectively. Huvertes and Yuriyama did finally perform though in the difficult Trobirn–Kapfenweil race, with Huvertes clinching 2nd place and Yuriyama getting 5th, but Munson would 16th place in race. Huvertes would keep his streak with another 2nd place finish in the Pearl City Power, Munson would bounce back with a 5th place finish and Yuriyama would get 10th. So there are many questions going into this Olympic Road Race: Can Aaron Huvertes keep up his streak? Will Munson be able to keep ahead of the pack? Can Yuriyama perform? What about Josh Jones? There are going to be many tropes going to this race, Huvertes is very inconsistent and hot and cold, will he be able to hold to his good performance that he had at the end of the last season. Munson doesn't do very well when he's behind, he strength is his stamina and if he moves to the back a of a group, he doesn't very often come ahead. Justin Yuriyama doesn't perform well under pressure, so on the biggest stage in the multiverse will he be able to do it. Finally there's Josh Jones, the young up and comer who did well in Kriterium von Schutzenphalia, but never did it again, it will be interesting to see where he goes in this race.

There are two other events tomorrow where Hopalians can win medals and they're both in the pool. Hopal was two competitors in both the Men's 400 Metre Freestyle and the Men's 400 Individual Medley Events. They're likely not going to win any medals, but they will be interesting events for Hopalians to watch and they will be tests for some of the competitors who have other events which they are considered stronger in. For the 400 Metre Freestyle Nate Scaleses will be looking for a good result as he prepares for his strongest event the 200 Metre Freestyle. Much is the same for George McAlpine as he prepares for the 200 Metre Individual Medley. Sticking with Swimming Jessie Duclaire is looking to advance in her event, the Women's 100 Metre Butterfly which is her strongest event, she will be looking advance, which looks quite likely for her. In Water Polo, the Men's have their first match against Lanesolde, and they'll be looking to redeem themselves in these Olympics. As there was for the women, there was much more heartbreak for the men in the GS SuperSports+ World Water Polo League. Like the women they advanced through the group at 4th place in their group and like the women they would get second in their super group. But like the women they would get narrowly defeated in the quarterfinals, this time by Darmen 9-8. In would be another devastating lost for them in the semifinals, 8-5 against Britonesia, and another devastating loss 10-8 in the seventh place final against Mytanija, so it would be 8th place for the Men's Water Polo Team in the GS SuperSports+ World Water Polo League.

The Hopalian Men's Football will be fighting to get a spot in the group of these Olympics. They've caused a bit mild controversy by breaking with tradition and sending the full Men's national football team, instead of sticking with tradition, which many others had done sending their U-23 and only three or four over 23 players. But that isn't expected to matter as Hopal isn't expected to contend for any medals, even with the full team, they just aren't good enough and there are others that are better. That they are expected to win their watch against Quebec and Shingoryeo as the team Quebec and Shingoryeo team very good, and aren't expected to be a factor at all. Hopalians will be very disappointed if their Men's Football Team loses this match against Quebec and Shingoryeo. In other news we will see Terri Moran make her international debut here at the Olympics, the young 17 year old table tennis prodigy wowed people at national events. But she wouldn't be here if it weren't for one Karina Jefferies noticing her at a school tournament, if it weren't for Jeffries she may not have ever been here as she never intended for table tennis to be her career. But here she is and it will be interesting to see where she goes. On the men's side there's Harry Mar and Justin Barnki, but there aren't expected to get very far. Mar will be playing with Moran in the Mixed Doubles Event it will be interesting to see how they play, especially since they haven't played much together and this was a match made for these Olympics. In sailing Hopalians Gerry Gonzalez and Layla Lee will be looking to rebound from their subpar performances on Day 0, they had some bad races today and they'll be looking to rebound to potential get into medal contention. Finally in Rowing we have a Men's Quadruple Sculls team that will be interesting to watch, with the best rower in Hopal, Mack Roy pairing up with amateurs Bob Banjo, David Dent, and Terrence Ilko it'll be interesting to see how they gel and work together, and whether they will be able to advance.

But that's about it for Day 1 of competition for Team Hopal. Be sure to tune into the Olympic Show on HBC to watch it all live.

Day D - 12 years ago

"On which team can I play?"

Deep down, he knew there was no need to ask it a second time if no one replied the first time, but Gabriele Lopeboselli still had the sparkle of childish hope, that they just hadn’t heard him. Or were just thinking too hard how they could steal him from the opposition, that must be it. But the fifteen boys kept on playing, their heads a bit deeper between their shoulders. After all, they were uneven for a game of football - they could use one more, no? Even if it was a sprawny one, with legs like matchsticks, an abundance of freckles and a slow accent, which misguided people to suspect a correlation with his mental swiftness.

“On which tea-”
“We heard you the first time, Gabs,” Renato said - one year older, seemingly twice as tall.
“Shirts seem to be one guy short, so I can...” Gabriele continued, with his naivety already exchanged for stubbornness and a hidden lump in his throat.
“Gabs…” Renato, in position on his own half, put his foot on the ball to indicate that this minor nuisance needed to be dealt with first, “You’re not playing with us.”
“Why?” Gabriele squeezed out, the lump turning into a large ball of tears which he pushed back with all his might.
“You’re… You’re just not good enough.”

Day D - 9 years ago

"Come on, Gabs, make the jump."

Softly, Carlo is pushing me in the back. In front of me, a rope dangles - this is the litmus test. Two years of circus classes, but if you want to enroll in a real training programme for acrobats, you need to show your guts. Only thing is that below him, there is a gaping depth. There’s a mattress at the end, the instructors claimed but whilst waiting in line, some older boys whispered that they removed it, to weed out the greenhorns.

“Gabs, don’t wait, look the-”

Carlo turns silent as somewhere from that canyon below my feet, a bolstering voice erupts.

“WHO IS KEEPING UP MY LINE? YOU! THE STICKFIGURE! GET OFF MY LINE!”
“Just jump, Gabs, or at least tell him about your arm,” Carlo whispers.

I softly caress it. Yesterday, Renato pushed me down the stairs at school - just for shits and giggles. My wrist hurts like hell, it doesn’t do what I tell it to. There’s no way I can grab that rope in freefall… Why did they have to push me to the front of the row again?

“STICKFIGURE! GET OUT OF MY LINE AND STOP KEEPING IT UP!”

In shame, I take the wobbly steps back down, requiring half the line which was already on the way up to return. It’s not the act itself which hurts, it’s the agonising silence in which it is happening.

“STICKFIGURE!” the instructor still shouts despite me standing in front of him - it’s as if a leaf blower erupts in full force, “IF YOU CAN’T DO THAT, YOU’RE JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH! GET OUT!”

Day D - 6 years ago

'Dottore Crime' was my father's favourite tv show, it made me nauseous just to hear the intro scene. It always dissected, both literally and figuratively, a true crime case with all the gory details of the dissection included. Once, when I was eight, my older brothers had convinced me to watch an episode with them. The wet pants had gone out with one turn in the washer, the nickname ‘Pissy’ only lasted a month but the image of the victim of which the face had been cut open still haunted my dreams.

But it had one advantage - it completely immersed my dad who had a strange penchant for this show. So if I had to get a scorecard signed which was heavy from the red ink, this was the time. And I would’ve gotten away with it if I hadn’t scrambled it from his hands even before the signature was complete.

“Wait a second, show me that… There’s a second page.”

He didn’t need to speak, I could follow each grade on the wrong side of fifty, every word of comment. ‘Underachieving dreamer’ and ‘only makes an effort for PE’ were the kindest among them.

“I know I’m supposed to say I’m not mad, but mainly disappointed,” father sighed, “but this is… This is an abomination. Nothing you pick up seems to work out - school is a disaster, those circus classes were nothing, you dropped out of basketball, your gymnastics, well…”
“I… I really tried,” I replied, which was only half a lie.
“Boy…” he shook his head, “there must be something you’re good enough for?”

Day D - 4 years ago

"I'm afraid it's a 'no' for me.”

In all honesty, I had never expected her to say yes. Seated behind a large table, the trio of judges of the illustrious ‘La Trave Pesari’ had been taking in the aspiring youngsters who showed their potential on each apparatus. She had been looking down on me straight from the start - maybe because two years of angrily hitting the gym had given me muscular arms which stood in sharp contrast with the nimble girls which danced across the hall. Heck, there was a decent chance I was the oldest of the crop. When I executed my ground exercise, she looked at me as if I had taken a large dump in the middle of the floor.

Then again, I wasn’t here for her. Giacomo Ralentini was the man for whom I had given my very best - vying for a spot in the sole institute of artistic gymnastics in the nation. The founder of ‘La Trave’ was well past eighty now but behind the pair of thick glasses, there were eagle eyes which had monitored every movement in the hall. In his hall. When it came to gymnastics, Ralentini remained the alpha and omega. And as such, he must have seen my hesitation at the vault - but also my perfectly landed tucked double salto at the dismount of the rings.

“I must say,” Ralentini started, slow and hesitant like an engine that had been left in a shed for years, “that I noted your strength.”
“Thank you, sir,” I mumbled - everything could help now to drag it over the line.
“There is power needed to land your exercises on the pommel horse and the rings.”

Something felt off. Something had the smell of a ‘but’.

“Lots of power,” Ralentini continued. “But…” There you had it. “Gymnastics is so much more. It’s about elegance and grace. It’s not a sport, my friend, it’s an art form. And as such… You’re just not good enough for ‘La Trave’. I’m sorry, boy.”

I had already turned around in disappointment - this had been a last chance for sure - as someone cleared his throat.

“Hmm…”

The third judge hadn’t said a single thing yet, except for his name and function in the beginning of what had been a long day - Marcello Adamo, head coach.

“Not so fast.”

Day D

Everywhere around me, people were rushing, pacing, in stress. It had gotten to me. The vault had never looked so large and I wanted to run, out of here, away from the Waterways Indoor Arena. I…

“You’ve landed it thousands of times,” Marcello calmly explained, calm as he always seemed to be. He could yell, I had discovered over the years, but never about an exercise. If you brought a soda in the hall. If you forgot to clean your apparatus after use. But never for a failed execution. “Scherbo with a turn and a half, I’ve seen it a thousand times.”

His voice, if you closed your eyes, always seemed to be telling a children’s fairytale - the bit where the rowdy class needed to point their ears and get sucked into it.

“I know, but in the warm-up it went wrong and…”

I was gushing rather than talking now.

“That’s why it’s called the warm-up,” Marcello replied.
“But what…”

I looked around - not sure why I did that.

“What if it’s not good enough? What if I am not good enough?”

Marcello looked up from his papers, looked straight through me.

“Look around you. This is the Olympics. Would you be here if you weren’t?”

Opening Ceremony

The cheer for Diarcesia was especially strong among the spectators that flew all the way from the country to watch the Opening ceremony in person. Unlike the past two Summer Olympics, local pundits almost unanimously agree that the Team Diarcesian this time around is the most eager and well-prepared iteration the Monarchy has yet to offer.

The unified delegation of Diarcesians in red and gold followed the chrysolyncophorus (flag-bearer) Edward Patrick. This did not contain everyone from Diarcesia, however. In response to the dieresis subdelegation fiasco in the XIV games, the Diarcesian Olympic committee's process was streamlined with it tested on a single dieresis as proof of concept. The honor was given to Wochaystein, a particularly sports-crazy corner of Diarcesia where it is said their ideology is "winning gold medals."

Wochaysteiner-Diarcesians in the audience applauded much later in the parade on their sub-delegation's turn to be announced. The Grüner-Jagiellonian flag was borne by no less than their Kaiser, Hannes II Rochus, and his daughter, Princess Lilli. The pair proved their skill as one of the best in the multiverse by outright qualifying in equestrian and sailing, respectively. In fact, Wochaystein contains all of Diarcesia's equestrian contingent, a testament to their prowess and passion in their national sport.

The Diarcesians, both in the unified delegation and Wochaystein, took their assigned places in the center of Somersville Stadium to see for themselves the spectacular songs of the Kalosian band Montereu.

Medal Hopes
With a cycling medal on offer on the opening day of medal competition, Krytenian eyes will be transfixed on the men's road race. Truth be told, though, the nation's quintet doesn't have a standout contender for gold. Without a big-engine sprinter, any Krytenian medal is likely to come from someone getting brave and getting on a breakaway, and this is where Geoff Cross comes into play. The twenty-seven year old from Leston is a strong group rider, and though he lacks a quick injection of pace, he can run the gears consistently and could force riders off the back of a small group through sheer punishing tempo.

Krytenia's best chances of a medal on Day One, though, come on the fencing piste. Jonathan Evans leads a three-pronged attack in the men's individual sabre, hoping to complete the set in his third Games after team bronze in Republica and silver in the same event four years ago. Imogen Brooks, meanwhile, is looking to fill a gaping hole in Escrime Emberton's sizeable trophy cabinet, as she hopes to take home a first-ever Krytenian medal in épée.

Brace Yourselves...
It all went wrong in the judo in Orean at the last Games, as any fan will attest. With funding reduced, and hopes inevitably lowered, the message is clear; Krytenia's judoka must deliver something in Port Grenville to secure the future of the sport in this country. Both Robson White and Polly Gennaro were in the Orean team, and know all too well the pain felt by the team through successive frustrations and failures in the Great Hall. Both judoka will be hoping to get things started on the right foot, and throw their opponents off theirs.

Something Different
The first medals of the Games will be awarded in the shooting - not traditionally a sport that translates to Krytenian success. Having said that, Adrienne Parker is a dab hand with a rifle, and though the 10m event isn't her forté, she'll be giving it her best, er, shot in the event. Sadly, Robert Couch isn't quite as close to the elite shooters in the men's 25m pistol, but it's the taking part that counts, and no doubt regardless of end result, Couch will be happy that he can call himself an Olympian.

The place to be, of course, for most Krytenian fans will be Lake Mittiyack. The waterway on Kale Island is the home of the rowing regatta - or, as we like to call it, the Medal Factory. Heats will be taking place in eight events, with Krytenian crews expecting to feature at the front all round. Rumours that rowers who fail at this point will be taken back to Ousevale and shot are baseless, by the way - have you seen our gun control laws?

Caryton's First Olympics! - Update 1 (Day 0)

The often unremarkable agrarian state had been too consumed with internal matters to participate in such a staggering international event like the olympics. However, in a bid to bring Caryton some degree of international merit, the Spiritual Republic had sent a modestly-sized delegation to participate, along with around a hundred spectators and an official cheerleading squad.

The Carytonic Olympic Committee would release a motivational anthem for the Carytonic delegation in a bold attempt to boost national morale and support for the beige-colored team of greenies and hobbyists. The Gospel Church of Caryton would sign a short declaration announcing the debut. The Team Cary anthem would be played through an official debut video, featuring excessively-conservatively dressed citizens waving off the delegation, national and Christian flags being carried up steep hills, and various national accomplishments of national athletes.

The Team Cary Olympic Anthem:

The Carytonic audience stood out among the thousands of other spectators, their clothing could be described as vintage at best, psychotically fundamentalist at worst. The men wore sturdy-looking suits, and the women antiquated floral-print jumpers of various colors that stopped at their elbows and calves. Several of the women had bonnets, several of the men had amish-type hats. Upon entering their seats, they braved an onslaught of phone cameras and laughs from foreign spectators before sitting down. The cheerleading squad- completely uniform in church robes- braved worse. The spectators' paper fans waved idly as the games begun. The Carytonic audience clapped politely and genuinely.

Connor Hathaway's badminton victory drew in initial enthusiasm for Team Cary. His first singles match ending in victory finally earned cheers from the audience, who stood up to clap. The initial game with Stefan Loek was rough, and many wondered if the young Hathaway would buckle to attrition. Connor grew up playing badminton with his grandparents, eventually developing a talent for it in highschool and earning the respect of his peers. No doubt he was thinking of his memories when he was told that he would advance.

The loss of Richard Hannis drew some worry for the Carytonic team, with the aspiring young fireman's inexperience and casual regard of his presence buckling to the might of Israel Demogino in what seemed to be a landslide game.

Angelina Shepherd's badminton loss coupled with the defeat of Emily Kelly essentially knocked Caryton's chances of a medal at women's badminton out the window. Angelina Shepherd is recorded to have commented "life goes on, I got my truck and husband- I'll be back." It seemed that all of the nation's hope relied on Connor Hathaway making Caryton known in badminton.

The slow and painful defeat of the Carytonic Women's Basketball Team did not discourage diehard fans, knowing they had played well against Diarescia. However, the sporadic defenses of Caryton's girls- normally used to playing neutrally- lead to their passiveness being exploited.

The extremely close Handball victory against the Greater Valkolicci Haven earned the first screams from Caryton's fans, the quaint farmers finally having something to celebrate. The hopes of Caryton had been diminished and what appeared to be a stalemate game had finally turned in their favor. The cheerleading squad entered a miniature line dance to music, the spectators from Caryton singing along and clapping, a wholesome celebration of their short-term victory compared to the air horns.

A slow start in sailing, but with several races left- hopeful Carytonic fans are eager to wait for the results.

Champion Network Studio
Agri, Electrum

“Hello, I’m Sophia Laskaridou with Champion Sports, this is Mihr Utz, and we’re here in Agri, Electrum to open our coverage of the XV Olympic Games! There have been some big changes in the roster since the last games.”

The camera switched to a tight shot of Mihr. “That’s right, Sophia. For the first time since Ioudaia entered Olympic competition, the nations’s roster has not grown. And what’s more, we’ve had a number of big names out of competition for these Games. Of those, most important is perennial fan favorite Peneleos ben Chadad. Peneleos is Ioudaia’s only athlete to compete in both the Winter and Summer Games. As most of our viewers know, his army unit was deployed to assist with the Wake Islands hurricane relief effort. His athleticism and team leadership will be missed.”

“And we’ve had a surprising return,” began Sophia as the camera framed her face. “Kleio Eitana, Ioudaia’s only Summer Games triple medalist, has returned to teammate sailing. Kleio has re-entered the competitions she left after her mixed-multihull teammate and husband, Dexios ben Dan Dan, was badly injured in a car accident while training for the XIV Olympics. At the time, she expected to only compete in solo sailing for the rest of her racing career.

“Champion got a chance to ask Kleio about her return to team sailing last week.”

The scene cut away to a follow shot of Kleio as she walked along the Black Stone Marina’s dock. “When I was younger, I used to say that I could sail anything that would float, and I used to be able to make good on that claim. But after starting international competition, I became focused on winning, and I stopped thinking about new boats to try out.

“After the last Games, Endymion ben Nehorai was kidding around, and suggested I try his job for a day. Well, he’s the skipper of a navy tugboat when he’s not training, so I didn’t take him seriously. But the idea stuck in my mind, and after a few months, I started to wonder if I could actually pilot a tug. So, I reminded him, and he pulled some navy strings, and I got a short course in driving a tugboat.

“It turns out I can take the helm of an ocean-going tug! Not as well as Endymion can — I don’t have his light touch on those huge engines — but I’ve still got the sail-anything magic. So, since I could still sail anything, I asked myself why not see if I could sail with anyone. You know, train up a new sailing partner or two. I asked Dexios if he would mind, and he thought it was a great idea. And the training went great, too! So, here I am, back in the trapeze of a racing cat!”

Mechanistic Results Regurgitation: Aqua She-Wolves downed after Sulaimaansdóttir makes history

While much of the world’s attention was focused on Somersville Stadium for the Opening Ceremony of the 15th Summer Olympics, where Naomi Maximiliansdóttir led out the Græntfjaller delegation, there were a few athletes missing from the procession as their tournaments were already getting under way. Most notable for Græntfjall was windsurfer Spartakus Þórlaugursson, who began the defense of his Orean gold medal with three uninspiring races on the Black Stone Marina course to lie 9th. In the pool, disappointment lay in store for the Aqua She-Wolves who led Saltstead for most of the game before succumbing in the closing minutes to two costly penalties. Greta Bergen (3) top scored for the Saltsteadish and Jóa Skúlisdóttir (4) for Græntfjall.

There was also room for a little history making as badminton player Marjaana Sulaimaansdóttir al-Farra became the first Muslim to represent Græntfjall at the Olympics. Græntfjall has been plagued by internecine tensions in recent years, from race riots in Laafjörður to a heated election campaign with issues of immigration at the forefront, but small moments such as Sulaimaansdóttir competing in Olympic colors for her adopted country or the debut earlier this year of Hanif Anwarsson el-Said for the national junior football side may be just as consequential as any big political moment in forging the new, multicultural future of the White Winter Queendom. Sulaimaansdóttir lost in straight sets to Kalosian Ajša Sajida, but was the #1 trending topic on Græntfjaller social media on the day.

Generic Athlete Profile Bandwagon: Is this the woman with the biggest snatch in the world?

Strongman competitions have always been a popular sporting pasttime in Græntfjall, although the adoption of Olympic-style weightlifting has been slower, and was reflected in a disappointing medal-less performance in Istria eight years ago. One person looking to change that this time as weightlifting events get under way at the Fairleigh Convention Center is not a strongman, but a strongwoman: Linn Leosdóttir, who boldly claims to have the “biggest snatch out of any women competing here.”

Linn took up weight training while recovering from a tennis injury and was immediately drawn to the sport. “I just walked into a gym, picked up a bar, and everyone was crowding around saying, wow, you’ve got a huge snatch!” While working at a fish canning factory, she never dreamed she could turn her enormous snatch into a sporting career, but was plucked from obscurity to compete in Istria when the size of her snatch became known to Ólympíusamband Græntfjalls officials.

“It was an exhilarating experience, being in the Olympic Village, rubbing shoulders with the greatest athletes in the world, and all the time, I just couldn’t wait to let them have a good hard look at my snatch: I knew they’d be impressed,” says Linn. Unfortunately, her Olympic dream turned into a nightmare with a failure to recover from a niggling ankle injury leading to a performance far short of her personal best. “I really don’t think I showed the best side of my snatch,” she admits, “It was pretty ugly.”

This time she emerges from training camp fit and healthy, and roaring to show the world the true extent of her snatch. The job at the factory is long gone and she now competes full time on the weightlifting circuit, supplemented by working as a personal trainer for the next generation of Græntfjaller power lifters. “There are some girls out there with really impressive snatches,” she says of her clients. “One day, I think they’re going to blow everyone away when they whip out their massive snatches.”
