Le Choix WCoH 43 Team
Nation Info
Name: La Théocratie Éclairée du Choix/The Enlightened Theocracy of The Chosen
Head of State: Grand Évêque Jacques du Crépuscule
Head of the Church: Pontifax Jacqueline de Feu
Capital: Espoir du Ciel (Hope of Heaven)

Ice Hockey in Le Choix: Like all sports in the Theocracy, players were chosen from a pool of citizens who showed an aptitude for the sport from a young age. Ice hockey has been one of the newest sports in the Theocracy, with the Ligue de Glace having run for only ten editions. As the Theocracy isn't a particularly cold nation, all play within the Theocracy are done in indoor arenas, with most of the facilities being in the Capital city of Espoir du Ciel. Four clubs call the city their home, while two are in the nearby city of Lumière, two in the city of Gelée, and one each in the small towns of Gardienne and Jardin. The Ligue de Glace has been dominated by two of the Capital clubs, Les Loups d'Hiver (The Winter Wolves) and Les Ours Polaires (The Polar Bears). The Chosen play more of a suffocating defensive style, electing to use counterattacks to score just enough goals to be relevant; nobody in the Ligue de Glace play offensive hockey. (OOC: Nobody has a style mod greater than -2.)

Assistant Coach: Jocelyn Vaillancourt, 44, Les Ours Polaires
Overseeer: Grand Évêque/Grand Bishop Lydia Poulin, 32

The Players
Goalkeepers
GK Mathias Adnet, 24, Les Ours Polaires
GK Florent Boudreaux, 26, Les Loups d’Hiver
GK Napoleon Arthur, 22, L’Avalanche
GK Fabrice Poullain, 20, Académie d'Ours Polaires

Mathias Adnet is the biggest reason that the Ours Polaires, or Polar Bears, have been atop the table the last three seasons after winning their most recent title. The heir apparent of longtime Ours Polaires player Justin Foix, Adnet has some issues in big-game situations (two Game 7 defeats in the semifinals of the Coupe de Glace that led to the eventual champion win proves that) but is proficient enough in regular play.

Florent Boudreaux is a one-time Coupe de Glace MVP after being the main keeper on Les Loups d'Hiver's run to the Season 9 title in Year 531 Post-Jump. Florent is a more aggressive keeper who likes to meet would-be scorers head on, using his size to stop their advances. Napoleon Arthur has been playing ice hockey since he was 11, one of the citizens that were chosen for the sport from such a young age, leading to his knowledge and instinct of the sport being very formed.

Fabrice Poullain is here to learn. The WJHC star deserves the opportunity.

Defensemen
RD Cécile Lamar, 24, Les Ours Polaires
RD Régine Tailler, 25, Les Pingouins
RD Diahann Loiselle, 22, L'Avalanche
LD Clarita Carton, 29, Les Ours Polaires
LD Lotya Hedin, 21, Les Loups d’Hiver
LD Andree Breaux, 29, Les Pingouins

Cécile Lamar is the Captain of Les Ours Polaires, and is one of the shrewdest in the sport in the Theocracy, weaving in and out between attack and defense with ease, while Clarita Carton is more of a pure defender, doing not much more than pushing the puck to the center.

Régine Tailler is a solid second-choice right defenseman, providing a physical presence when needed and one of the best when it comes to Penalty Kills, while Lotya Hedin is more of a hybrid type that can also play on the attack on penalty plays. Diahann Loiselle is more of a raw prospect, having been chosen for ice hockey only for the last three years and here to gain valuable experience; Andree Breaux provides good locker room presence.

Centers
C Heloise Tourigny, 31, L’Avalanche CAPITAINE
C Susanne Guiton, 19, Les Ours Polaires
C Michelle Burdin, 26, Les Loups d’Hiver
C Timothé Robineau, 18, Académie de l'Avalanche

Heloise Tourigny is the heart and soul of this squad, and one of the oldest players at thirty years of age. Most Chosen retire from sport around 32, so she is nearing the twilight of her career and enjoying being a member of L'Avalanche, traditionally one of the most offensive teams in the Ligue de Glace. Tourigny is a solid distributor of the puck and can surprise opponents with shots from range. Susanne Guiton is more of a pure defensive center despite being only eighteen; Michelle Burdin provides a solid body, not really specializing on anything but decent at everything.

Timothé Robineau will be around for many tournaments to come, he's here to soak up all he see.

Forwards
RW Prewitt Forton, 25, L’Avalanche VICE CAPITAINE
RW Josette Mousseau, 23, Les Ours Polaires
RW Suzanne Dauphin, 20, Les Loups d’Hiver
RW Victoire Baillairgé, 17, Académie d'Ours Polaires
LW Myriam Magnier, 23, Les Pingouins
LW Rayder Valliere, 27, L’Avalanche
LW Adélaïde Le Sueur, 24, Les Glaciers
Prewitt Forton will likely be the leading scorer for La Lumière, possessing great skills on his feet and a decent short-range shot to boot. Myriam Magnier is the Captain of Les Pinguoins and more of a passer.

On the bench, Josette Mousseau and Suzanne Dauphin are here to just gain some experience, Mousseau better in transition and Dauphin being more of a player working off of plans; Rayder Valliere is a good hybrid winger who can play far back if needed and Adélaïde Le Sueur provides solid minutes off the bench, being someone who's coming up in the league.

Victoire Baillairgé is the most likely of the three from WJHC to have any meaningful minutes.

PP Unit 1:
Forton-Guiton-Magnier; Lamar-Hedin.

PP Unit 2:
Forton-Guiton-Valliere; Lamar-Carton.

PK Unit 1:
Tourigny-Valliere; Lamar-Carton.

PK Unit 2
Forton-Guiton; Loiselle-Guiton.

Chromatik Ice Hockey Team

Nickname: The Ice Storm
Captain: LW Loren Basalter
Style Mod: -5

Head Coach: Suzanna Marmont, 57 - The head coach of the Chromatik Ice Storm will not be a coach of the CHL per the League's decision. Instead, they turn to one Suzanna Marmont, who may not know the most about the sport but is quite good at organizing people and getting them to act together as a unit. Despite the fact that she may not be able to educate the players on how to play, hopes are she'll be able to help them gel together as a unit.
Assistant Coach: Bryson Sindari, 39 - A valuable member of the Felswyr Viceroys staff, Bryson Sindari is a savant when it comes to Ice Hockey play development in Chromatika. It remains to be seen just how much that's translatable to the world stage.
Goalkeeper Coach: Jason Dumond, 42 - The man who helped both Dorothy Belmont and Dustin Mast to where they are, Dumond runs a goalkeeping school in Chromia for anyone who wishes to learn. He stresses excellence and consistency, two things that any keeper must have a firm hand on.

Starters
RW Ludovic Blanc, 23, Chromia Lancers - A purely offensive winger with an aptitude of speed, Blanc struggles against bigger opposition.
C Ségolène De Villiers, 25, Myana Penguins - A great all-around player whose first touch is a thing of beauty. A good assist threat.
LW Loren Basalter, 30, Felswyr Glaciers - A quick player with great puck-handling skills and the primary scoring threat for the Ice Storm, Basalter was the only consistent goalscoring threat for the Viceroys and instrumental in their triumph at the first two seasons of the Chromatik Hockey League. CAPTAIN
RD Josephine Galmont, 26, Chromia Lancers - The cheeky member of the group, Josephine Galmont led the Chromatik Hockey League with minutes in the Penalty Box in the inaugural season. She's smart about when to go in, though, and won't take a penalty for no reason. Despite her enforcer nature, she's also decent at her job of protecting the net as well.
LD Rowena Hauptman, 23, Felswyr Viceroys - The best defenseman in the nation, Rowena Hauptman famously gave up a full ride to Chromia Central College University to play fullback for the Comets, opting for the lesser known sport of ice hockey instead. She may not be the biggest, barely six feet tall, but she's quick on her feet with a seemingly endless pool of energy.
GK Dorothy Belmont, 22, Felswyr Viceroys - Had a much rougher season, but was still instrumental on how the Viceroys clinched their second title. She can be a bit slow in reacting to sudden changes in play, but when she has the chance to square up, there isn't really anyone better in the country in front of the net.

Reserves
RW Bérangère Levett, 27, Lhor Peregrine Falcons - A much bigger winger (at 6 ft, 7 in) who isn't afraid to use his size to get past defenders and smash the puck in.
C Jared Dumond, 22, Felswyr Glaciers - The best offensive minded center in the sport in Chromatika, he led all centers in goalscoring this past season. That isn't to say he's half bad at passing - he just prefers to finish the job if he can.
LW Wiles Roman, 27, D'rea Metropolitans - The Metropolitans had the second highest goalscoring output in the league and made it to the postseason, and Wiles was one of their best. He likes to run directly at people, choosing to either pass the puck off or shoot right before he's about to hit the defenseman.
RD Lereux Pandoval, 28, Myana Penguins - A more offensive minded defenseman who likes to contribute assists. He's quite good at moving up and down the rink and contributes the most during penalty plays.
LD Yvon Dufresne, 25, Tihon Typhoon - Likes to stay on his side of the rink, preferring to press the play instead of join the attack himself.
GK Dustin Mast, 22, Chromia Lancers - A more instinctual keeper, Dustin Mast plays his best game in the flow of things when reaction is king. He's a bit injury-prone, but when he's available, he's a solid option.

W Élisée Leloup, 21 - Umbar Argonauts - The fastest skater on the squad who can make a few flashy plays.
C Mickaël Gueguen, 24 - Chromia Knights - A big body to throw in when lacking size, Gueguen isn't very good on offense.
D Jerry Monat, 27 - Myana Penguins - Monat is deceptively good at being at the right place at the right time defensively but doesn't do much on the other end.
GK Anne-Marie Martin, 20 - Urrheddiao Kings - Still growing keeper who is decent at the close game but not very good at stopping ranged shots.

Formations/Pairings:
L1 - Blanc - De Villiers - Basalter
L2 - Levett - Dumond - Roman
L3 - Leloup - Dumond - Roman
L4 - Levett - Gueguen - Leloup

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL MEN'S ICE HOCKEY TEAM

This will be Abanhfleft's nth time participating in the World Cup of Hockey. Abanhfleft is going through a bad patch of form sports-wise so no one really expects much from this team this time around. Hockey has also experienced a bit of a decline in popularity so that also means that less people would be watching the national hockey team this time around. The ice hockey craze bubble has burst, and Fleftic ice hockey fans aren't taking it too well so they'll support the team no matter what but even they aren't getting their hopes up. That's how far expectations have fallen for this team. It's kind of sad, really. And then they went to the final of WCoH 35 where they lost to Elejamie so apparently interest in hockey has been revived.

Bollonischian National Ice Hockey Team
Bollonischian Hockey Federation

Ice Hockey unlike what numerous people believe is actually more popular than field hockey despite the sport of ice hockey not getting much recognition in Bollonich’s coastal cities and really anywhere that is not in Pseudonia. Pseudonia is the largest however least populated state, which mainly has cold conditions inhospitable in quite a few places with temperatures hitting well below 0 degrees Celsius. Culturally Bollonischians comprise of people from a number of different cultures with a good proportion of Græntfjaller influence existing the South-Western part of Bollonich and mainly Pseudonia. Ice hockey remains to be one of the most popular sports in Græntfjall and the same is emulated in Græntfjaller majority areas of Pseudonia. Ice Hockey has since then developed in Bollonich emerging as the shining sport from Pseudonia with quite some players making their way over the Western border to Græntfjall to participate in the regional Pavolan League. With greater monetary incentives such as the formation of the Pavolan League and clubs from Bollonich being able to participate in the same ice hockey has developed a lot, and has also necessitated the formation of the Bollonischian Hockey Federation. The National Ice Hockey team will be taking part in the World Cup of Hockey for the first time however with prior experience in a domestic level hopes will be high going into WCoH in Kelseek as we aim to make our mark on the world of hockey.

Malone declares Phoenixes will "end an era" ahead of Cassadaigua clash

Meet Ted Malone. He's 21 years old, stands just 5-foot-7 on a good day, and right now he's the most talented goalscorer in Delaclav hockey, putting up 67 goals while playing all 92 games for the Salem Ice Lasers. His reward and obligation is to join reigning USL MVP and Phoenixes captain Jehiel Abreu, and fellow youngster Edan Bullard of the Stockton Snipers, on the top line of the national team.

On one level, Malone is polite, earnest, and just happy to be here. On another level, he's brash and brimming with confidence, and he's fired some shots across the bow at the competition as Delaclava prepares to play the 43rd World Cup of Hockey in Kelssek.

"This is going to be a breakout tournament for us," Malone declared at the Delaclava team's virtual press day, hosted from the team's hotel in Mazinaw, Kelssek. "I'm sick of this shit where the stale programs keep making it through. We have more talent than everyone else and we're going to break through here and now. This is the start for us, and we'll end an era for a lot of teams who've gotten comfortable at the top for too long."

He continued, "Our juniors got two silver medals in a row and they didn't even have me helping them out." Malone was not selected for WJHC16 in Delaclava due to recovery from ankle surgery, and had aged out of eligibility for WJHC17 by just four days. "And juniors aren't any different either - no one actually gets any better after about 22, you just get more experience and keep working hard. But we're ready to dominate now."

Furthermore, Malone predicted that the Phoenixes' opening match in Group B would be the perfect time to demonstrate. The opponent is fourth-ranked Cassadaigua, the top seed in the group, while the 28th-ranked Phoenixes are the seventh seed. At last year's edition in Græntfjall, Cassadaigua made it all the way to fourth place while Delaclava stumbled to a fifth-place in their group to miss the Round of 16.

But that's all old history to Malone, who had some very specific criticisms of the upcoming adversaries: "They're more tough than they are good. They have experience, sure, but that doesn't help you when a team is faster in every way - on our skates, with the puck... Their captain, Burnett? When you're 37 years old, the best way to help your team isn't to be the captain. It's to leave. She and Everson should be hanging out with my parents. They might as well be in the stands if they're going to watch me score anyway."

Malone's outlook isn't entirely surprising considering his confidence in his team, which carries five teenagers out of 24 players and just two players over the age of 28: starting goaltender Tom Sutton (31) and defenseman Radovan Němec (34), both of whom are in danger of losing their positions to juniors Bradley Konta and Ambrose Parra, respectively. Conversely, Cassadaigua currently rosters eight thirty-somethings, with their youngest player, 24-year-old Kelsey Carver, older than 16 of the 24 Phoenixes currently in Kelssek.

Regardless of Malone's comments, Cassadaigua's championship pedigree is well-documented, with two World Cup of Hockey titles to their name, and whether they write off the Salem winger to "youthful ignorance", "little man syndrome", or ignore it altogether - they will have mapped out a title journey, on which the Phoenixes resemble a speed bump rather than an obstacle.

With four spots in the Round of 16 for the group of 12, Cassadaigua is favored to be joined by Mercedini (ranked 5th), Abanhfleft (10th), and Fluvannia (14th). Other contenders alongside Delaclava include TJUN-ia (17th), regional powerhouses and former champions Vilita and Turori (25th), and debuting Eshialand (not ranked), who stunned the Ashlings in the WJHC17 final 5-4. With numerous junior players on both sides joining the senior rosters, there will be plenty of interest in that matchup.

In addition to the line of Abreu, Bullard, and Malone, the Phoenixes feature the returns of defenseman Antoine Clement, forwards Logan Wynne, Alex Coburn, and Evan Sexton, and goaltender Sutton, as well as the debuts of defenseman Max Devane and WJHC additions C Tomas and RW Zoltan Bondra, LW Danny Ballac, D Bohdan Kirilenko, G Bradley Konta and G David Hauser. Of note, center Peter Požgaj, who captained the junior Phoenixes to their two silver medals, will serve as alternate captain, commanding the respect of his fellow youngsters.

Delaclava comes to Kelssek with a chip on their shoulder, having lost to them at home in the finals of WJHC16, and then losing out on a final playoff spot to Kelssek after losing their last group stage game to Equestria. They will be seeking their first top-16 appearance since the 40th edition in Quebec; the program failed to register for the 41st edition in Taeshan.

Siovanija & Teusland National Hockey Team

World Cup of Hockey 40, 41 & 42 Champions

Facts

Nation Name: United Republics of Siovanija and Teusland
Short Names: Siovanija and Teusland, the United Republics
Demonyms: Siovanijan, Teuslander/Teus
Governing Body: Hockey Siovanija and Teusland
Colours: Blue, gold, white
Anthem: ‘High Mountain Skies’
Highest Domestic League: Ehrenliga
Nicknames: The Goldhorns
Style Modifier: +1.5

Coach: Aaron Kuhn (Stelburg Kaisers)

Aaron Kuhn’s name will live long in the memory as one of the greatest coaches Siovanija & Teusland has ever produced: multiple Strauss Cup titles with the Stelburg Kaisers, and, of course, his crowning achievement, the three World Cup of Hockey titles. The 4-1 victory over Valanora in the WCoH 42 tournament will live long in the memory as one of the finest games this team has ever played. Kuhn’s style has, at the international level, built the Goldhorns into a force, undefeated in their last 46 games and bringing home three world titles. It’s a game that is based on playing quick, able to keep the pace with any opponent, while also making sure there’s a physical edge in the game and being capable of running the other team down. The team is quite similar to the team that captured the WCoH 42 title, with the noted absence of former captain Gunter Pfenning who retired after the tournament. Siovanija & Teusland joined an exclusive club last time around, as one of only 2 nations (Havl, WCoH 20-22) to win 3 championships in a row. The goal in Kelssek is to join another, more exclusive club: 4-time champions.

Forward Line 1

RW -- Razvigor Tsvetanov -- Admirala Pomorie -- 30y/o -- #19
C -- Timo Schlager -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 28y/o -- #97
LW -- Frank Heider -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 29y/o -- #16

This line has been the most dangerous for the Goldhorns over the last two World Cup of Hockey tournaments, with Timo Schlager getting the infamous winning goal in the WCoH 41 Final and Razvigor Tsvetanov grabbing 2 in the WCoH 42 Final. A speedy, dynamic centre, Schlager is an explosive skater who uses incredible puck skill and hockey IQ to dominate the game. Tsvetanov is a big-bodied power forward, capable of using his body, and a menace in front of the net. Watch out for his one-timer on the power play. Joining these two on the left wing is Frank Heider. Heider is an excellent playmaker who seems at times like he has eyes in the back of his head - especially when on the ice with his Marlesee teammate Schlager, with whom he has an excellent partnership. Expect the Goldhorns’ top talent to lead the way again.

Forward Line 2

RW -- Aleksej Knejz -- Felsenkirchen Jets -- 22y/o -- #93
C -- Edwin Ranger -- Stelburg Kaisers -- 27y/o -- #34
LW -- Vitomir Glaskov -- Energija Chernovets -- 25y/o -- #20

This line was put together at the start of WCoH 41, and despite being somewhat patched together - Vitomir Glaskov plays centre for his club - they had a great deal of chemistry right away. Since then, they have been on fire, and a dominant performance in the spectacular semifinal with Quebec & Shingoryeo helped the Goldhorns to the third straight title. Vitomir Glaskov beside him might be more on form at the moment, having just won the Strauss Cup after leading his Energija Chernovets team on an underdog run through the playoffs. Aleksej Knejz had a strong year with the Jets again as they improved, scoring 30 goals, and continues to have the chance to make things happen for his country. Knejz has been called by many ‘the next Razvigor Tsvetanov,’ and is a big-bodied power forward as well. Knejz is somewhat faster than Tsvetanov, however, and is a big threat down the right side as it doesn’t take him long to get going. Probably the fastest line on the team, this group will be relied on for plenty of scoring.

Forward Line 3

RW -- Frank Keric -- Raketa Bukovets -- 25y/o -- #44
C -- Erhard Lasker -- Eisbaren Stelburg -- 30y/o -- #37
LW -- Leon Goss -- Marzig Wolves -- 23y/o -- #61

The Goldhorns third unit has traditionally been a more grit-and-grinding line, but with the excellent performances of each of these players in the Ehrenliga last season, it’s hard to keep them on the bench. Erhard Lasker was the league’s MVP last season with an incredible year for Eisbaren, as they finished first place, and he put up 101 points in the league. Frank Keric was the lone bright spot on a Bukovets team that really struggled, but Keric’s speed and skill will make him a good addition to this line. Leon Goss is a big, strong player who normally plays at C for his club, but is another example of this team simply having too many centres for the 4 positions available. Lasker was the best defensive forward in the league last season, and you can expect this line to share in some of the defensive responsibilities as well as being perhaps a unit that can catch opposing teams sleeping - all three of these men are capable of putting up the points if required. In WCoH 42, this line was capable of shutting down other countries’ top units as well as putting up points - Goss had a goal in that Final win over Valanora.

Forward Line 4

RW -- Christian Hasselberger -- Pinguine Ternau -- 32y/o -- #24
C -- Erhart Kuhn -- Stahlberg Steelers -- 21y/o -- #74
LW -- Vincent Schell -- Eisbaren Stelburg -- 31y/o -- #21

Gunter Pfenning’s retirement, the end of a storied international career that included 3 world titles, means the Goldhorns had a hole at 4C - and Erhart Kuhn (no relation to Coach Aaron) gets the call. He has been exceptional as a skilled two-way forward for Stahlberg so far, despite being so young, and with a big body he is capable of playing in front of the net. This line for the Goldhorns will be quite energizing - Christian Hasselberger, of course, one of the grittiest players in the Ehrenliga today and has always had a big role for the national team. The thing about Hasselberger is that he’s more than just the big hits - he can score, too, and has put up 20 for Ternau in the past. He has good chemistry with Pfenning, the star centre who these days is a bit slower, but hasn’t lost any of the hockey IQ that has made him one of the all-time greats. Vincent Schell is one of the best players in transition on this team, and can catch opposing defenders off guard with just how quickly they can flip the script on the ice. It’s another mix of lines, with parts from the 3rd and 4th units last time found here, but undeniably a strong mix.

Defensive Pairings

Defence Pair 1

D -- Toni Mihelic -- Olympia Borograd -- 27y/o -- #5
D -- Evgeni Tomic -- Energija Chernovets -- 23y/o -- #2

The Goldhorns’ top defence pairing sees Toni Mihelic, the reigning Stanimir Slezak Trophy winner as best defenseman of the Ehrenliga, hoping to pick up right where he left off last time around. Mihelic led all Goldhorns defencemen in points at WCoH 41 and 42, and the smooth skating defender was clearly the Goldhorns’ best puck mover. He’s an excellent passer, who will be vital in the set-up play for this team, but also can surprise with a strong shot from the point. Lining up beside him is Evgeni Tomic, one of the best young defencemen in the Ehrenliga. Tomic is a mean, brutal defender who hits hard and isn’t afraid to throw around his size. At 6’6, 225 pounds, he’s a hard hitter and beware if you have your head down coming over the blue line. What’s even more terrifying about Tomic is how quickly he can move around despite it - an excellent skater. Tomic also has a cannon of a slapshot, officially now the hardest in the Ehrenliga, which he isn’t afraid to use from the point, and it can lead to opportunities for deflections for his team-mates - if not already in the back of the net itself. Tomic added a Strauss Cup to his resume last season, making him one of a few players on this team who have a world and domestic title in their resume.

Defence Pair 2

D -- Jorg Gottschall -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 31y/o -- #3
D -- Stefan Schiele -- Marzig Wolves -- 24y/o -- #8

Jorg Gottschall has consistently been one of the best defencemen in the Ehrenliga during his career - as a key player for the Seelowe Marlesee team that won the Strauss Cup three seasons ago. He’s adept at knowing when to jump up in the rush, but is well-rounded and quite capable in his own zone as well. He generates a great deal of offence for this team, and can be counted on as a skilled puck-mover. This time, he’s paired up with Stefan Schiele, the Marzig Wolves defenceman who has such a good reputation at a young age. He has great vision on the ice, seeming at times as if he can see the entire rink when he moves the puck. Skilled and quick, Schiele is a great powerplay quarterback as well. He’s creative, and this duo is one that can generate plenty of offence. When they are on the ice with Edwin Ranger and the second line, look for them to try to pin the opposing team in their own zone for the entire shift.

Defence Pair 3

Defensive Pair 3

D -- Volen Atanasov -- Olympia Borograd -- 26y/o -- #26
D -- Ladislav Hlavac -- Vrnovo Islanders -- 28y/o -- #66

Volen Atanasov is Toni Mihelic’s partner at Olympia Borograd, and is another point-producing, puck-moving defencemen. He’s quite quick, and is perhaps a bit more willing to shoot than Mihelic - a powerful wrist shot that is rarely off target. One thing Atanasov is excellent at is leading the rush - he always seems to know when to hang on to it, or when to send a pass to a teammate. Ladislav Hlavac was arguably the Goldhorns’ best defensive defenceman in his debut at WCoH 42, and the same level of strong performance will be expected of him here in Kelssek. He’s strong in front of his own net, but he can also move the puck a bit too, making him a solid two-way defender that will be valuable in a role with Atanasov, who is a bit more forward-thinking. The two brought some chemistry from their days together in junior at WCoH 42, becoming one of the team’s most formidable defensive pairings.

Goalies

G -- Robert Schock -- Stelburg Kaisers -- 26y/o -- #29
G -- Volker Seiden -- Eisbaren Stelburg -- 30y/o -- #30
G -- Jozef Prijatelj -- Olympia Borograd -- 30y/o -- #31

When David Wagner announced he would retire from international hockey after WCoH 41, it was thought that the succession in the crease wouldn’t be too difficult to figure out: Robert Schock was the clear heir apparent, starting in the WCoH 41 Final - and posting a shutout. There’s also Volker Seiden, too, who has been excellent for Eisbaren Stelburg. And then, Jozef Prijatelj posted a 0.927 save percentage in the Ehrenliga season, won the Sebastian Seitz Trophy for best goaltender, and put his name directly into the conversation. Each got their chance at WCoH 42 - and Robert Schock won the day, with excellent performances throughout the playoffs including stopping 23 of 24 in the final against Valanora. Seiden and Prijatelj are both great options to back him up, and both will likely see minutes in a long tournament.

These jerseys, designed by Donnaconan company infinite, have achieved near-mythical status in Siovanija & Teusland hockey circles: the junior team won WJHC 14 wearing them, while the senior team have made it 3 WCoH triumphs in a row in the iconic blue and gold colours. The three edelweiss in the middle represent the three values of the nation: unity, patriotism and freedom, or the national motto, ‘Concordia, Patria, Libertatem.’ They are fan-favourites, and around the world, you know when you face the team in blue and gold, you are in for a tough competition. Some journalists in the media have referred to the senior team as the ‘Big Gold Machine’ for their recent run of success; the juniors will hope to be a little machine in them as well.

Schedule

Matchday 1: Nova Anglicana vs Siovanija & Teusland
Matchday 2: Kelssek vs Siovanija & Teusland
Matchday 3: Siovanija & Teusland vs Placely Placington
Matchday 4: Sarzonia vs Siovanija & Teusland
Matchday 5: Siovanija & Teusland vs Sannyamathland
Matchday 6: Magnecia vs Siovanija & Teusland
Matchday 7: Siovanija & Teusland vs Squornshelan Remnant States
Matchday 8: Recuecn vs Siovanija & Teusland
Matchday 9: Siovanija & Teusland vs Ranoria
Matchday 10: Savojarna vs Siovanija & Teusland
Matchday 11: Siovanija & Teusland vs Behetij

The group stage format will see all matches take place in Kelssek. Matches of note include the opener against Nova Anglicana, while the second match of the tournament which will see the Goldhorns take on host nation Kelssek, who are sure to bring their A game for this tournament at home - that game in Latrobe will surely be one with an electric atmosphere with the fans of two hockey-loving nations. Matchday 4 sees the Goldhorns face Sarzonia, the Stars are always a tough opponent in international competition. On matchday 7, the Squornshelan Remnant States are a familiar rival in football but unranked in hockey, it will be interesting to watch the teams face for the first time. What follows is a difficult run-in: group third seeds Recuecn, Ranoria, and the renewal of one of international hockey’s finest rivalries on matchday 10. Siovanija & Teusland vs Savojarna is a storied rivalry, played out 6 times in history, including 2 WCoH semifinals and a Round of 16 (which took place in Kelssek at WCoH 38). Both teams know the importance of this game, not just because of the rivalry, but because it has a chance to be crucial for final group standings. It’s always a fun one when the Goldhorns and the Northlights face off, and we are looking forward to renewing competition with our respected rivals.

We’ll have all the updates as the Goldhorns travel to Kelssek attempting to defend the World Cup of Hockey title. Let’s go boys!

The leader in Caps, Goals, and Assists for the National Team, Ishii Hakoda was selected to lead the Ice Bisons out of The Silence and into the new era! While he has not yet to manage to capture the same magic as the venerable Kad Skirata had when the Ice Bisons first ever showed up on the Multi-Verse Stage, Ishii continues to hold the confidence of the National Sports Council. After a successful Third Place campaign in World Cup XL, the Ice Bisons have continued to advance out of the Group Stage in every edition since.

With the Forty-Third Edition of the World Cup, the Ice Bisons are looking back to history for a brief hope of what is to come for the team. Following the three-peat of the infamous Havl team in World Cup XX, XXI, and XXII, the Ice Bisons came into the tournament favored in their group along the likes of Neu Engollon: Ranked 19th in world and 6 th seeded in the tournament, the Ice Bisons came into Saintland with one hell of a chip on their shoulder . In fact, the Ice Bisons – at the time captained by none other than Ishii Hakoda – managed to capture the group with a 5-3-1 record and thanks to the goal differential, beat out Neu Engollon to make it into the Upper Bracket of the tournament. Fighting through the likes of Gregoryisgodistan, Soviet Canuckistan, and Cassadaigua, the Ice Bisons won the Upper Bracket before facing off against Havl. Standing between them and their fourth consecutive cup, the Ice Bisons were up for quite a challenging series; back in the Twenty-Third edition, the Finals were a Best-of-Three series to ensure the victor was not whoever played a better game that day, but instead, the actual better team. Losing the first match lit a roaring fire under the Ice Bisons, who shut out Havl 2-nil in the second match and fought hard for a 6-5 victory to dethrone the three-time champions and secure the only piece of multiverse hardware to ever grace Avatarian soil…

Maybe history will repeat itself…

OFF 21 HOSAKA Severi 23 R Drotenfao College Gaoling Bears
OFF 49 SONG Unataq (C) 35 R University of Adirolf Gaoling Bears

After making his debut in WCoH XL, Shu Pianhuo returns to his place between the pipes for the fourth straight tournament; jumping over the two perennial backups for the National Team – Ming Zhanshi and Dang Mun-Hee – and securing his place in net. A younger goalie, who managed to win his first Kuruk Cup within his first three seasons at Omashu. Shu has proven his family proud, developing into a fine starting goalie whose style continues to evolve over time.

The defensive pair for the first line remains the same since WCoH XLI, with Omashu-fan-favorite Watang Kouji paired with Hed Torvik of Itakawai fame. A defensive line with over 200 kilos is somewhat of an Avatarian tradition, where speed is often sacrificed for power, though even for their size, Avatarian hockey players tend to be faster than one would expect. Watang, out of the Fire Nation, is known for powerful forechecks and his insane speed on the backskate; while Hed, otherwise known as the “Mandalorian Shield”, is just as impressive at generating offence as he is pushing another player into the boards.

The forward line, albeit a bit old, is anchored by the youthful Hosaka Severi, who started on the second line before his promotion to the first; with his blinding speed on the ice, Hosaka has been a great asset for assisting on the wings and driving offense with the Avatarian standard of dump and play. Kobushi Kaede, an impressive left-winger from Omashu – has continued to hold down his end of the line, shifting more to the defensive side with the recent changes in style. Song Unataq, who has always been more defensively-minded, continues the trend of the line to be more interested in keeping puck possession and breaking up offensive rushes through size and determination. Though for Song, at 35-years-of-age and in the last of his Gaoling contract, many are hoping to see him put on quite a show in World Cup XLIII to bolster up his stock.

With Hiteki Kia having over a century of caps on the Ice Bisons under his belt, he is the most seasoned player on the team, and rightfully wears the first A. With age and skill, Hiteki is renowned for his ability as "damage control" through the last four World Cups he played in. Having changed up his usual pairing from Hed Torvik to Ero’ki Nacer, the young right defensemen from Hatsu University and second year Badgermole finds himself yet again beneath the wings of “Sifu Hiteki” as many of the younger players respectfully refer to him as such. Nacer, who graduated right out of Hatsu University to sign an entry-level contract with the Badgermoles, found his number being called in the final games of the 2020.2 Regular Season, when last season’s first pick Hu Jiaozi was taken out of the season with a bad trip that saw him slide skate-first into the boards and break his tibia in two places. With an impressive season in the Republic Hockey League underway with the Humoki Huangdogs, he made the transition to AHL-level play with ease, and scored his first AHL goal against the Itakawai Lightning in Game One of the Finals.

On offense, Wang Torsti from Si Wong finds himself on the left side of the ice, after a renewed contract with Si Wong has been paying off for him. Opposite him we find Cheung Sepi who has continued to carve his name in the banks of the Kelita River. Even though he has been moved from the first line, Cheung is not taking it as an insult, and instead, viewing it as a chance to sharpen his own skills on the off-handed plays. In the middle, another once-first-liner Nestori Huan finds his return to the line better known for damage control rather than scoring. However, with his impressive knowledge and vision that had earned him his spot on the first line last World Cup, Huan may very well prove his doubters wrong and bring some glory to the second line… or find himself fading into obscurity…

With the retirement of Kuang Deniigi after the AOlympics, the young Degour Niyan has been called up from the reserves to take his place. A scrappy young Mandalorian from the eastern reaches, Degour is incredibly volatile and prone to egging his opponents on to get into their heads. Pairing him with Ki’an Losow gives the youthful inexperience a master’s overwatch. Though, as Losow has been fond of saying, it is only a matter of time before he himself is no longer fit for the fight. Expected replacements on the third line are both Sons of the Earth; Mancole Kaleb of Ba Sing Se, and Bar’cay Godorow of Itakawai… which has led many to wonder if the third line is going to be full of Itakawai players.

Offensively, the third line is filled with strong passers and even stronger shooters. Both Relicyc Tho-An and Souma Shichiro have done amazingly well in skills competitions involving accuracy and shot speeds; both players are younger and wanting to make a name for themselves. However, what is unique on the third line is the arrival of Kil’or Alecyc, an impressive power forward who saw his name behind many a goals in both previous tournaments as well as strong postseason play for the Lightning. Given the emphasis that Coach Ishii has put on slotting Badgermole players into prime spots the last two campaigns, someone like Kil’or – a second-line Lightning player who has been with the team since their return – was bound to find himself in the lower lines. However, ever the professional, Kil’or has enjoyed playing with Relicyc, a teammate and good friend of his in Itakawai, and the two of them have been working with Souma to fully connect the offense on the third line… Do not be surprised if you start seeing goals being made from this far back in the depth charth.

Kelssek Hockey suffering from ‘bad vibes’ and high expectations
SPORTS | INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY

“I know it sounds pretty... what does this even mean, but yeah, it is a lot of bad vibes that have been surrounding the team, and it’s a really big factor in how come the team has been as poor as it has been over the last few years.”

That’s the pessimistic verdict of none other than Neville Keanes, the last and only person to captain Kelssek to a World Cup of Hockey title, on the situation facing the national team ahead of a home World Cup that is being greeted with equal parts excitement and trepidation. Fans are excited to have the sport’s biggest event in the country, of course, but they’re also afraid of a home ground embarrassment.

And it’s fair to say the performances have been dismal, especially when compared to the national football team where it’s fair to say Kelssek has re-established a place at the top. In hockey, despite its clear position as the country’s most popular spectator sport, nothing like that level has been reached.

Kelssek has gotten no further than the first knockout round since the return, and sit in an unedifying 18th spot in the world rankings. There was the 39th edition when a home World Cup meant to put Kelssek back in the conversation became a screaming row over allegations that coaching staff faked an injury to obscure Riley Hesselboe being dropped after an argument with the head coach. Then a series of forgettable (thankfully) group stage eliminations. Progress stomped on by Siovanija and Teusland last time in Græntfjall.

The one bright spot undoubtedly was a World Championship win at the junior level, but the faceplant of an attempt to defend that title had many fans tuning out as quickly as they’d turned it on.

“The only thing to do is to trust the process,” Keanes says. “Peter Dalton [Kelssek head coach] is a guy I trust to really bring this team along, and we have talent and stability in the team that’s been missing. We can’t expect to just walk in and take the trophy but I think we can expect to take one more step, one step at a time.”

Alex Sorenson was feeling pretty good about his selection for the 43rd World Cup of Hockey. While he was fortunate enough to keep his job despite failing to make it out of the group stage, as well as the same team as last time, he was still feeling a bit of pressure. Maybe if he did a much better job here and snuck into the elimination stage then chances are he'd be able to breathe a bit more easier. Failing that, a fifth or sixth place finish might also see him keep his job even if it meant he failed to make it out for the second tournament in a row. Regardless, he was feeling pretty confident that his side would actually do fairly decently. Probably not a repeat of the 27th World Cup of Hockey, where they finished top of the group despite the massive disadvantages and even made it to the quarter-finals before bowing out with a 2-1 series loss, but still an admirable result. He had a schedule to work with, a new official nickname for the team and a good routine for working on his players. All he now had to do was concentrate on each match, thanks to a handy-dandy guide a fan had given him.

Gyatso-Kai: Unless you're able to pull off what you did against Havl back in the 26th and 27th World Cups of Hockey, you're fucked right from the get-go. A more defensive game should work here, so concentrate on blocking their shots and possession. Then see if you can catch them off-guard with any well-timed or high-pressure shots. You may not win this but you could either keep the score-line close or pull off a draw.

Græntfjell: You should theoretically stand more of a chance here but concentrate on what you have to do. They're quite a tough team and, again, solid defending might be key here. You can be a bit more upfront here but don't get complacent. Just keep close together, have the defence work defence and see if you can deke it past.

Neu Engollon: They have been two time WCoH winners, including that tournament that you sucked horrifically at (and where an investigation on possible match fixing in it went absolutely nowhere), but they seem to be facing a steep decline. Either the high wore off or their luck ran out. Either way, they're still a solid team so don't get complacent and you might stand a chance. Just do what comes natural.

Chromatika: This is more of an even game. Try and be sudden and spontaneous in front of the net to catch their goalie off-guard. That, coupled with plenty of speed, might work for their defence as well. Close down their offence as well to minimise the chances of them scoring.

Banija: A small chance of getting a surprise win but don't get cocky. Nothing much else to suggest here other than just carry on doing what you normally do.

Valanora: There's no helping you here, you're fucked six ways from Sunday. Put Lambert in net to make it so you'll lose by one fewer goal.

Bollonich: Finally, a match you should have a chance in. They're a bit untested, a bit green, but since they've managed to beat our rugby team in some code and we're rebuilding let's not get too ahead of ourselves. Concentrate on the match at hand, don't do anything stupid and you should get an easy win out of it.

Malandrin: One-and-done. Easy win. 'Nuff said.

Snow and Ice Caps: See above.

Nephara: You'll still stand somewhat of a chance here. While they too seem to be returning after a long break, unless they're a different Nephara to the one I'm thinking of, you just have to concentrate more on attacking. Their counter-attack is something fierce, though, so be prepared to do some two-way defending.

Lorenthia: Your last opponents. I don't have any information on them, so just do what you do best. And don't compare them to their neighbours Lisander either, this isn't the rugby.

Not exactly the most inspiring guide there. And most of it was stuff he was either planning to do anyway or wasn't sure how they would be useful. Especially with the mysterious Malandrin and Snow and Ice Caps teams, where the information was so vague that he might as well have consulted a magic 8-ball. But there were some tidbits of good advice there. Especially regarding their fourth opponents, Chromatika, where it gave an idea of what the goaltender and maybe the defence were like. But for most of the group, he had to trust his gut. Maybe it'll work, maybe it won't. Maybe he'll be able to sneak into the play-offs, maybe he'll come close but no cigar, maybe he'll disappoint yet again and the EIHB decide to withdraw from international ice hockey for good. There was only one way for him to find out. Give a pre-match rousing speech to inspire the team and then see them head onto the ice to play their opener against Gyatso-kai. They might not win it but, should everything click into place, it should still be a good enough start to the tournament. Game on.

Old and New with Elias Freimann - Special WCoH Edition

Hi everyone, and welcome back to my weekly Old and New column. Normally, we take you through all the rumours and permutations of the Ehrenliga season, things that have just popped up as new stories and those continuing stories that capture attention. This time around, with the Siovanija & Teusland hockey community focused on the World Cup of Hockey, we’ll take a look at the competition as the Goldhorns attempt to defend their crown.

Old: Coaching Staff

Aaron Kuhn has been the coach of the Goldhorns for every tournament they have ever played in, all the way from WCoH 35 on. That’s 99 international games, and 3 world championships. Coaching for so long at a top level is a strain for anyone, even Kuhn, who surely goes down as the greatest coach in the history of our nation at this point. And so, of course, there are rumours that this could be the last go-around for the Stelburg Kaisers man. I personally think it’s just talk at this point. Kuhn has managed to build the Goldhorns into a formidable hockey dynasty, and he’s done a similarly incredible job with his club team - I can’t see him wanting to ride off into the sunset just yet, with great potential still in this group. He turned 64 in March, and will officially reach national retirement age next year - but still, don’t expect anything of the sort for a while.

New: Goalie Stability

The question of #1 goaltender was settled in the playoff stages of WCoH 42, where Kaisers goalie Robert Schock put in a stellar performance to help lead the Goldhorns to back-to-back-to-back championships in the final rounds, including an excellent performance in the final itself - nearly as solid as his play in the WCoH 41 triple-overtime final. And so, for the first time since WCoH 40, when David Wagner was the nailed-on starter, the Goldhorns come in knowing exactly who will be starting the most important games. WCoH 41 saw a battle between Wagner and Schock, with Schock eventually coming out on top, while after Wagner’s retirement, the Ehrenliga’s Goalie of the Year Josef Prijatelj entered the conversation as well. Now, however, the focus is on Schock to deliver the consistently-solid performances that have defined his international career.

Old: The Squad

It’s not a very different lineup from the one that captured gold in Graintfjall 12 months ago - in fact, every single player from that team returns except the one retiree, Gunter Pfenning. And while Pfenning will be greatly missed - his #9 retired at the international level now - let’s face it, at WCoH 42 he was mostly a role player. A really, really good one, but a role player nonetheless. Most of the Goldhorns’ stars, like Timo Schlager, Edwin Ranger, Razvigor Tsvetanov and Toni Mihelic are in the middle of their primes, capable of a few years’ more solid performances. That stability and chemistry amongst the team makes the Goldhorns a formidable foe. I understand that Rafael Werner, the young Felsenkirchen Jets winger who scored 77 points in the Ehrenliga last year, was heavily considered for selection - but in the end, Kuhn chose to run it back with a familiar group. Werner will surely get his shot in the blue and gold, but for now must wait in line.

New: Erhart Kuhn

The only new player on the team, in fact, is Erhart Kuhn. He’s of no relation to the team coach Aaron, but the young man made an incredible impact for the Stahlberg Steelers last season, scoring 22 goals and 33 assists to win Rookie of the Year honours. Most importantly, he proved himself as a solid two-way player. A big body, he can protect the puck well and also can play down low, winning battles along the boards. The perfect centre to put with Christian Hasselberger and Vincent Schell on the fourth line. Speaking of…

Old: Depth

Some nights, your biggest stars need a little help to shine brighter. The Goldhorns have consistently been able to rely on their depth players throughout this run as the top team in the world, and they should expect the same at this tournament. Ehrenliga MVP Erhard Lasker centres the third line, the dominant two-way centre a forceful shutdown centre who proved his worth in that WCoH 42 Final against Valanora as he helped shut down their stars. On his wings, Keric and Goss are skilled, speedy players who can also play with an edge - Goss, in particular, is big and accepts his role on this national team, winning battles along the boards. On the fourth line, my colleague Oskar Kirsche’s favourite player Christian Hasselberger will continue to bring the energy through physical play, while Vincent Schell is a solid defensive winger who will make it a challenge for anyone to get by him.

New: Leadership

Gunter Pfenning’s retirement doesn’t only leave a hole on the ice - it leaves one off of it as well. The only man to ever wear the ‘C’ for the Goldhorns left the position vacant - and of course, there were many strong candidates to take over. The focus was on the two alternates: Timo Schlager and Toni Mihelic. Some suggested Mihelic, as the captain of his Olympia Borograd team, and also for slightly political reasons - go from a Teus-speaker to a Siovanijan-speaker. But from what I understand, it was always going to be Schlager - he’s the face of this team, the brightest amongst several stars. It was sealed that moment he scored the triple-OT winner against Ko-oren. Edwin Ranger takes the second ‘A’ now, he’s the captain of the Stelburg Kaisers and an experienced leader at this level too.

Old: Rivals

When the group draw was made, there was a bit of a buzz from the Goldhorns’ fanbase across the country: Savojarna. This rivalry has arguably defined the Goldhorns’ history in recent years. That 6-5 semifinal in WCoH 40 is one you can point to as a major moment in the history of the WCoH. The Northlights could easily be the ones coming here with 3 titles had they won that game. There have been 6 meetings between these two rivals, 3 coming when it really counts in the playoffs. The last meeting was a 3-2 win for the Goldhorns in WCoH 41’s semifinal, and so Savojarna will surely be looking to wipe away those recent losses on Matchday 10. It’s a clash of styles, of regions, of histories, and even of political systems - and most important, a clash between two great hockey nations. It’s a big rivalry, but it’s one full of respect, too, and arguably the best rivalry in world hockey at the moment. It’s a game everyone has circled on their calendar.

New: Politics

I wanted to take a moment to congratulate my friend Ruslan Derikov on his election as World Cup of Hockey Federation President. Ruslan played for Olympia Borograd, Rudar Trkev and the Vrnovo Islanders across a great Ehrenliga career, winning a Strauss Cup title with Olympia and scoring 683 points. He served as an assistant GM at Olympia for many years, before being promoted with Hockey Siovanija & Teusland. He was a key part of the group that brought the World Junior Hockey Championship back, and served as the organizer of that tournament through Hockey Siovanija & Teusland for the last few years. And now, he’s been elected for this highest job in world hockey - the WCoH Federation President. He’ll have much work ahead of him, including picking a Vice President, before he officially takes over as President at the end of this tournament. He’s a good hockey man, and I wish him all the best.

Old: The Setting

Sitting here in my hotel room in Burnaby, Kelssek, it all feels familiar - we’ve been here before. WCoH 39, in fact, was hosted in Kelssek, and I’ve since returned as part of RBC’s Winter Olympic coverage as well. It’s a beautiful country, and I know the fans here are eager for this tournament. Surely they’ll be looking at the meeting between the Goldhorns and their own home team as a big opportunity to make use of that home advantage, and while we wish them good-luck, of course I’m hoping it won’t mean a thing. Organizing a World Cup of Hockey is no easy task, and so full credit to my friends at Kelssek’s hockey federation for doing it twice in 5 editions. I’m sure it will be a great tournament ahead of us - and here’s hoping the Goldhorns can make it 4.

Team name: Græntfjall
TLA: GRÆ [GRF when not available]
Demonym: Græntfjaller
Team nickname: Ice Wolves

Kit: White with blue detail and blue socks; alternate is the reverse. Because all Græntfjaller names are patronymic, players typically have their first name on the backs of their shirts.

Coach: Freybjörn Fabiansson
Assistants: Per Dansson, Marís Finnsson

KG have continued to keep faith with Freybjörn Fabiansson after a first playoff berth at WCoH42. Having spent a little time working abroad, Freybjörn has a slightly more nuanced grasp of international rules than most Græntfjaller coaches. The emphasis for the team remains on a defense-first, heavily physical style of play, however.

Squad: A 22-person squad has been named for the tournament.
  • The Pavolan Hockey (PHL) is a new league, but rivals the GPL (football) for popularity in terms of the national sport.
  • Græntfjaller players tend to be on the bigger side [by human standards], and very physical, fore-checking and back-checking with equal vigor. But this means trading off for speed and most are not skilled puck-handlers by international standards. They hit a lot of one-timers.
  • PHL rules are laxer on charging, cross-checking, and shots to the head than international rules.
  • Fighting is a basically unknown phenomenon in the PHL.
  • Players in italics are new; all were part of the WJHC squad.

26. Dýrmundur Asbjørnsson – RW
32. Bjarni Davíðsson – D
39. Auðunn Friðlaugursson – LW

81. Anakol Maximiliansson – C
84. Florian Sigurfinnursson – D [C]
85. Alexander Steinnsson – C
87. Bjarnleifur Asgeirsson – D [A]
89. Christian Sofusson – LW
90. Róbert Grímúlfursson – D
96. Guðmann Svanbergursson – D

Lines will be flexible and adjusted over the course of the tournament but provisionally:

GK1: Tom
Tom is a 23 year old 6’3” hybrid-style goalkeeper who has already proven himself the most consistent of the PHL goalkeepers, even if he's generally played on teams without the offensive power to deliver many wins.

D1: Florian – Ben
D2: Bjarni – Bjarnleifur
D3: Guðmann – Jason
7th: Robert
Florian and Ben are big, heavy, hard-hitters; most of the rest are even bigger, even heavier, and even harder-hitting, but Bjarnleifur, somehow still looking to become the first Græntfjaller to play overseas – is by far the best two-way player.

L1: Auðunn – Jack – Þórlaugur
L2: Christian – Anakol – Kristoffer
L3: Þorkell – Lukas – Dýrmundur
L4: Eiríkur – Alexander – Víkingur
Auðunn is a bruising sniper, Jack the only player with any real speed or puck-handling skill. Younger and less experienced than the defensemen, the offense is still big and slow by international standards.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my Scorers: Yes
Choose Scoring Events: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Maybe, ask first if you have something unusual planned
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes, but let me determine the severity
Godmod Injuries to my Players: Maybe, ask first and let me determine the severity
Godmod Other Events: Maybe, ask first
Other: You can sign any of my players should you wish (or draft from the WJHC), given how bad my own league is I'm happy to send them overseas, just shoot me a TG

A note on penalties: Græntfjallers will probably be perceived as dirty players by international standards, but they are not intentionally out to inflict cheap shots, but rather used to league rules that are laxer on checking. Most could not even spell ‘concussion protocol’.

A note on fighting: Græntfjallers will not initiate fights. Please do not RP my players initiating fights, ever. That said, if someone else starts a fight, they may respond. Most should be physically able to handle themselves; I don’t object to you RPing your players ‘winning’ fights but don’t have them mop the ice with mine.

A note on pictures: Please do not use photographs of RL people/teams/stadiums and say they are my players/team/country.

A Stumble out the Gate
Abanhfleft 8-4 Eshialand

These two teams, the A and the E...
Must have a score with the same GD...
Soccer, hockey, it doesn't matter!
Four goal losses, utterly battered!

So it was written after these two nations' soccer match in Cup of Harmony LXXX, and perpetuated during World Junior Hockey Championship XVII. Abanhfleft and Eshialand respectively had won those meetings 5-1, and it only continues here. The Prophecy of Four seems to never end, does it?

Eshialand actually tied for the second-most goals out of all of Group B... too bad Abanhfleft doubled up literally everyone else. Four goal losses, utterly battered. Not exactly what the Owls wanted, but at least they put up 4 goals, which serve as the tiebreaker between them and Lisander. Not last, right? And at least all three goalies got some time in net... every cloud has a silver lining.

Despite the silver linings, Devon St. John was about the only person on the team who was happy with the game, scoring one of the game's two hat tricks, the other being from Abanhfleft's Bobby Gahol. As for the rest of the team... they'd like to thoroughly scrub it from their memories and burn every single surviving video of the encounter. Sadly, with the internet being the way it is, this game will never be forgotten. This will forever be remembered as the Eshian National Team's World Cup of Hockey debut, a completely and utterly humiliating sh*tshow, with a goal every five minutes and a scoreline that looks stupid, feels stupid, and is stupid in every regard. I wonder what the Gaelic Gamers will have to say about that.

On the bright side, the Owls can now do what every other Eshian team does after a crushing defeat: look ahead to the next game, that being against... WJHC finals opponents Delaclava. Oh joy. At least it'll be interesting, to say nothing of how the team will actually perform...

You Had To Be Kidding Me...

Type: Interview
Time: After MD 1

Interviews. Most Athearan sport professionals hate it. Why must you go on a screen recording live to hundreds of thousands of people, just to answer a few questions when you can just do that online? But still, in a way, interviews are vital. Here is one with Athearan goalkeeper Folke Hallström, as the first line was playing for the first fourty minutes, until the second line was fully swapped in. However, these are just key questions.

Did you think the Line swap was the right call? You held ground, and just seven minutes after the swap, Brentboro scored, costing you the game.
I say the call was fair. We were getting tired, and the goal to be honset, was a lucky one. Brentboro literally swung the puck to the side of the wall, and the bounce from that caused the goal. I say it was unpredictable. It's not your mistake if you couldn't prevent it, and i feel bad for Karlstone. To concede to such hysteria, is just terrible for him.

What about your performa? Do you think you did well for the duration when you played?
Not to brag, but i think i did well. Most shots were blocked, so yeah, you can say i did well. Of course, credit to my teammates as well. They did their best, the moment just wasn't with us. As was our luck, like other Athearan NTs. I just hope we can prove ourselves next time against Raspotochje, i want some points, like badly.

What do you think about the Junior Stars? Not a reference to Sarzonia in any way, but to our young third line.
They will perform, in my opinion. Actually, i have been coaching Richofen personally, and i think he has improved by far. Just hoping they carry the torch of Athearan hockey, as we, will grow old and retire. I don't want Athearan hockey to die out. And i am certain it won't, but, they need to remember the Athearan hockey we currently play.

Do you think Brentboro deserved the win? They did win by a cheeky goal however it seems so.
Even by the cheekiness to do it, they played their game fair and square. I just still am a little pissed from that stupid goal we made, and i still stand by the fact that it wasn't Karlstone's fault, just some bad luck. One says form is temporary, class is permanent. Atheara is an embodiment of that quote, and i will perform consistently, no matter what.

Will you take your chance against Raspotochje? They are also an unranked side, so you could win this.
I have high hopes for the game in regard. We need to start earning those points, and the game against Raspotochje can give us exactly that. We try our best until the bitter end, no matter what. Our pride is a metal tower, we are difficult to graze, but when you down us, you will regret it big time. In short, i am ready for the game, no matter what comes my way.

Thank you for your time in this short interview.
Don't even mention it, please. I want to rest from that weird defeat.

World Cup of Hocky 43 Matchday 1: Chromatika 0-1 Banija

Despite being able to contain Banija's attack for most of the game, the Chromatik Ice Storm dropped a narrow match to twelfth ranked Banija in the first day of WCoH play.

Dorothy Belmont was brilliant in goal for the Ice Storm, stopping twenty-nine of thirty shots faced; Chromatika succeeded in five of six penalty kills but was unsuccessful in all four power plays generated as the new trio of Blanc, De Villiers, and Basalter only grazed the defense of Adama Singateh.

"They (Banija) were solid in transition," remarked De Villiers, the Captain of the Ice Storm, "Every time we thought we had a shot, there were additional bodies between us and the goal. All credits to Banija, but I thought we played pretty well and that we were in it for the most part."

The defensemen duo of Hauptman and Galmont played brilliantly in their debut along the front line, while Lereux Pandoval and Yvon Dufresne provided significant minutes from the bench.

Valanora is the next opponent for the Ice Storm, and it'll be another kind of test as they face the top seeds in the group. Loren Basalter must come through in the clutch.

This will definitely be a tournament to remember for Chromatika as it tries to establish itself in the hockey world.

Key Moments of the Game, WCoH MD1, Raspotochje 1-3 Le Choix

Moment 1: 18:28 1st Period, Raspotochje 1-0 Le Choix
Fortin's shot is stopped, and Raspotochje is very quick on the turn. Lamar back to defend, but it's a three-on-two, and Raspotochje's forward is on a one-on-one against Adnet! He shoots, and Adnet is a second too late! Goal! Raspotochje takes the lead against Le Choix as La Lumière are bloodied early! It's a bit of an unexpected result against Adnet, who is probably one of the best players of La Lumière; to be fair, though, it was Fortin's folly that the puck was given over. An unlucky combination of events there.

Moment 2: 13:39 2nd Period, Raspotochje 1-1 Le Choix
It's the Power Play for La Lumière, and Prewitt Forton has a decent attempt here! Forton gets away from the defender trying to mark him and shoots, he scores! Le Choix equalizes with plenty of time remaining in the second period! What a goal for the Captain of the squad!

Moment 3: 03:20 2nd Period, Raspotochje 1-2 Le Choix
What a move! Victoire Baillairgé comes in to relieve Forton, and the WJHC player scores on a fast break! People were wondering why WJHC players were here at all, and the wonderkid has made a huge difference in her first game! Le Choix has takes over the lead!

Moment 4 08:31 3rd Period, Raspotochje 1-2 Le Choix
In the best chance that Raspotochje has had since the opening minutes, their Center's shot is blocked by the edge of Adnet's glove. The netminder has really settled in, stopping 18 of 19 shots so far. What a save, but Le Choix could use another goal to put the game away.

Moment 5 06:19 3rd Period, Raspotochje 1-3 Le Choix
There's a bit of a scrum in front of the Raspotochje goal, and the puck has gone in! It's credited to Heloise Tourigny the Captain, and that should do it for the match! A solid way for Le Choix to start the tournament. Next will be United States of Devonta, a much tougher opponent.

Team map
The pucks denote a possible second division spot. The coloured squares denote a top division team.

As you can see, once it's all mapped out, the top division teams are concentrated in the northeast, while potential second division teams gravitate towards the west. Placing the second division teams where they are creates a new problem: conflicting with sports that are already played there. Field hockey especially, which is played in towns like Tathsoren, Vleugelberg, and Angelwoud and already has huge staying power in that part of the country. Of course, if a team wants to be there, they can't be stopped, but it means dividing an already small market in two - at least it helps that field hockey is a summer sport and its season doesn't overlap (much) with ice hockey. Something that these plans do perfectly is to avoid the biggest cities. It might sound like putting a team in a metropolis will guarantee more viewers, but the cities are already so oversaturated that adding a new sport isn't helping anyone. Keeping ice hockey in the northeast and around the north coast will carve out a heartland that isn't the area around Aevanna. Much like baseball a decade ago, getting people to watch your sport involves some patience and a gradual move into the mainland.

However, the fact that we're already talking about a second division with most of its teams located on the mainland is something we could never have dreamt of just two decades ago.

As most of Ko-oren's sports are summer sports - or at least not tied down to the coldest months of the year - ice hockey could break into areas that don't have a good winter alternative, though. Right now, winter sports are simply 'sports that are played indoors during winter but can be played any time'.

To identify further chances for Ko-oren's big seven eight sports, it's time to dive into the calendar.

When a previously veteran-laden team undergoes a youth movement, whether brought on by releasing older players or watching them retire, it's bound to go through some growing pains.

That was the takeaway from the Sarzonian national ice hockey team's 6-2 defeat to Savorjarna in the opening match of the 43rd World Cup of Hockey, according to manager Paul Bremerton.

"I mean, yeah, we have guys in new roles, whether it's Matty [Davies, playing left wing in place of the retired Sylvan Turcotte] or Brett [Tanguay, Jr., now playing first line right wing]. There's only so much you can do in scrimmages or exhibition matches to get familiar with one another. There's a lot you learn about each other by playing."

Tanguay assisted on the goal by Alyssa Hamnigan and scored a power play marker at the 18:21 mark of the second period to briefly bring the Stars back into the match by cutting the deficit to 3-2, but Savorjarna overwhelmed the Stars defence and goaltender Jacob Parsons. Parsons made 19 saves on 24 shots as the Savorjars added an empty net goal at the 19:48 mark of the third period to provide the final margin.

"Yeah, I mean it's tough," Tanguay said as he sat in front of his locker addressing the media. "There was a lot of experience in this room at the last World Cup and it made a big difference for us young guys coming in. I mean, sure, a lot of those guys are a text or a Zoom call away, but there's nothing like being able to make adjustments on the fly in real time."

For his part, Parsons blamed himself for a "poor outing," saying "I didn't see the puck well tonight." However, defenceman Chris Walton disagreed.

"We had way too many defensive breakdowns," he said. "It wasn't Jake's fault by any stretch of the imagination. If we finish our checks, we play a much more competitive game."

Sarzonia (0-0-0-1) won't get much time to think about this ugly defeat, as they face off against unranked Behetij tonight. Bremerton said he would start Parsons instead of opting for backup goalie Owen Franks, saying he wanted Parsons to develop confidence after the match against the eighth ranked team in the multiverse.

"I'm sure there were a couple of goals Jake would like to have back, but sending him to the bench now would send the wrong message," Bremerton said. "It would tell people 'I have no confidence in you' and I have every confidence he's going to right the ship and we'll be fine."

Puck Watch: Bears Sneak Out Of Ulyanof With Win

Postby TJUN-ia » Wed Aug 04, 2021 6:43 am

Two years after the Miracle of Rasmussen in WCoH42, WCoH43 was ready to kick off in Kelssek, the very same nation that hosted our first rodeo on ice way back when. At the 39th edition, we upset a ranked team on our competitive debut before being pushed around by the other 3 teams in that group. To say TJUN-ian Hockey has improved since that tournament would be an understatement, the Ice Jaguars now finding themselves in the Top 20 in this sport after making the 41st Playoffs at the 11th hour through miraculous circumstances. Ølson Rasmussen has brought life back into the sport for many back in TJUN-ia but now, he has to try and keep up the magic other the next 11 games at least.

The first test for the Jags this time around would be the Bears of Fluvannia, a team ranked only 3 places above us in 14th. This was expected to be a tight affair between two closely-ranked units and that what exactly what the Great Northern Coliseum saw on Opening Day. The first two periods would be pretty busy for both Jakob Vaduz and Teukka Salama as they blocked shot after shot after shot no matter how hard it became. Julian Visipils and Mark Bradley were regularly producing those shots but nothing could be done about the walls that were in the nets. Things were looking like we may be headed into a shootout as the 3rd played on but the Bears were always on the puck and they would finally break through with 3 minutes to go as Julio Hamilton did the deed. TJUN-ia tries to find an equaliser but in the end, it wasn't to be as the Bears escaped with the win and the Jags joined Cassadaigua of all nations at 0-1.

Not the start we wanted, but losing by a single goal in a tight game is better than losing by 12 in a blowout. This tournament will see us bounce around arenas until the final 3 games and that process starts now as we head to the Eolienne Dome, the host of our biggest games, as we face the '#25 Eel Cat Things of Vilita and Turori. GO JAGS!

Heated encounter as we come face to face against regional foes
Græntfjall vs Bollonich in ice hockey is always a fiery encounter mainly due to the cultural similarity of the team which has also resulted in the development of tensions between the two sides. With the number of Bollonischians playing in the Pavolan Hockey League dominated by clubs from Græntfjall the players come face to face against each other quite often which yet again boosts this rivalry.
On matchday one of the World Cup of Hockey in Kelssek this is precisely what happened as both teams took each other on the international stage in Neorvins, Kelssek. The Bollonischian side taking part in the World Cup of Hockey were relatively experienced having recently taken part in the Pavolan Hockey League but what they lacked was international experience. International experience which is crucial while playing for your country. And this gap in experience seemed to be making the change in the game as despite us going ahead first Græntfjall soon pulled level. Rakel Tómasdóttir who put us ahead was quickly switched around following her goal and soon the Græntfjall right winger Dýrmundur Asbjørnsson put them level. The score bing level following the first quarter things were looking tough however it seemed like a goal from Græntfjall would be inevitable. And soon enough Græntfjall did exactly that as they went ahead 2-1 in the second quarter before scoring again 5 minutes later extending their lead to 3-1. After a second quarter dominated by Græntfjall defeat looked certain for Bollonich however we were not defeated, we were still going to fight. And fight is what we did in the third quarter however the more than competent Græntfjaller defence managed to keep us at bay and win the game.
Despite losing we put up a good fight and showed our quality and we will come back stronger is our next game against 21st ranked Neu Engollon.

After Cassadaigua game-winner, Malone calls his next shot

When Ted Malone let loose some bold statements about the Cassadaigua national team at a pre-tournament press day - comments along the likes of "we'll end an era" and "they're going to watch me score" - few pundits would have expected that the cocksure winger would have been up to the task of backing up those comments.

Imagine their surprise when Malone really did walk the walk, scoring two goals including the game winner with 5:03 to play as Delaclava sprung the World Cup of Hockey's biggest opening day upset in Kelssek with a 3-2 victory over the defending pewter medalists.

Asked about the result in the post-game press conference, a smiling Malone simply stated: "I warned you. I don't make threats, I make promises."

Cassadaigua appeared to be in fine form for the game, but noticeably had fewer high-stakes games in the past months, while the Phoenixes came into the game following deep runs at the World Junior Hockey Championship and the Atlantian Oceania Hockey Championship. The first period saw plenty of quality scoring chances, but both Tom Sutton and Travis Anderson held firm in their nets, and 14 shots from Cassadaigua and 11 from Delaclava resulted in zero goals. But it was Cassadaigua who made the first blunder in the second period, with Jennifer Everson called for a holding penalty while attempting to stop Zoltan Bondra moving down the boards. The first power-play unit failed to generate a meaningful chance, but Malone jumped on with the second unit, and when Calum Dunn slapped a shot from the left side that Anderson could only deflect, Malone was there on the right to put the puck into the opening.

Cassadaigua managed to tie the game at the 7:08 mark of the second period as Cassidy Conti wrong-footed Cäsar Schlesinger on her way into the Delaclava zone, and found an opening to slide the puck across to Brittany Gomes for the one timer. As the second period wound down, Alex Coburn was called for a hooking penalty and it appeared Cassadaigua could restore order. But a pass from Katie Quigley at the point down to Gomes instead fell to the feet of Peter Požgaj, the former Ashlings captain who tore down the ice with speed and slid the puck over to the backhand side and past Anderson with 1:54 remaining in the second frame.

The Dagans tied the game once more 9:29 into the third period when Natalie Edmonds got the better of the positioning battle on Max Devane and deflected a shot from Kayla Kelly past Sutton. But Malone had one final answer; as Courtney Burnett advanced the puck up the ice, Malone came charging up to pick Burnett's pocket, then skated down the boards until Kelly came to challenge him. Malone dangled past Kelly and charged towards Anderson; the defense could only look back as Malone let loose a slap shot from short range that went off the bottom of Anderson's blocker and bounced into the net. Malone celebrated with his team, then demonstrated to the fans by tugging at the front of his jersey, calling attention to the large "Delaclava" block letters on the front.

"You know, I saw people were laughing about what I predicted," Malone said. "And that's fine, because they're just not ready for us yet. We showed everyone what we're about tonight. We're a top five team right now."

The man now dubbed on social media "Mystic Malone" has equally ambitious plans for his next trick, in calling out Delaclava's next opponent Eshialand. The Junior Owls memorably defeated the Ashlings 5-4 to win the World Junior Hockey Championship in Quebec, and each of the senior Phoenixes and Owls have brought multiple WJHC players onto the World Cup rosters. Eshialand certainly have high hopes for this tournament, but got off to a rough start after being run out of the arena by Abanhfleft 8-4.

While Malone conceded that the Junior Owls had won their gold medal fair and square, he also doubted the senior team will be able to replicate that success. "The thing is, we're just too smart of a team to get fooled twice. They can play fast just like us, but we have other options. We're going to frustrate the hell out of them and shut them down - hell, we'll shut them out entirely. By the time we're done with them, they'll be too ashamed to even keep those gold medals!"

Other notable results in Group B included Vilita and Turori's 3-1 victory over Schutzenphalia and West Ruhntuhnkuhnland in their return to the World Cup of Hockey, while #5 Mercedini got a stronger start in a 4-0 defeat of Lisander, and Fluvannia triumphed over TJUN-ia 1-0 in a battle of likely fringe contenders. Alongside the Delaclava-Eshialand meeting, key Day 2 matchups include Vilita and Turori vs. TJUN-ia and Fluvannia vs. Mercedini, while Cassadaigua will try to start anew against The Jovannic.
