A road trip to a country like Vikanias typically would not have been cause for joy or celebration. Purely a business trip, the Phoenixes should only have have had a win to take and go back home.

But this wasn't a typical road trip. This would be the first time Rick Jones would travel with the team since his successful Achilles surgery. At the time, Levins had insisted that Jones not concern himself too much with attendance at the games - primarily, the coach knew his former play at St. James well enough to know Jones would be jumping up and down in support, risking further injury to the ankle.

But after watching his team fall, flat and uninspired, to Dotivija in their own backyard, Rick called Coach Levins that very night. Let me travel with you, he pleaded. I'll stay seated, I promise. But let's put this team back together. And Levins agreed. He trusted his protegé, and besides, he knew well enough that Rick was right. He'd seen the way his team was in the locker room. They were broken, distraught, confused. He told Rick to meet the team in Crystal Lake that night. They were headed to Vikanias that morning. Could he make that happen?

Rick jumped out of his chair as quickly as his crutches would allow him. Corcorran to Crystal Lake was a brutal eight-hour monorail ride at this time of night, but for his team, he'd make it happen. Miraculously, he fell asleep quickly just outside Catherina and woke up to the sun rising in Salem, just an hour east of Crystal Lake. He called Levins with the address of the train station, and Levins would ensure they made a quick detour. As the bus did so, one of the Salem Wizards players, Cameron Wright, pointed out, "Coach, the airport's that way."

"Yeah, I know, we just gotta make a stop first," Levins replied.

Wright looked at Rodney Duncan to his right and shrugged. The bus pulled up to the monorail station. The players looked out the window quizzically. Then they saw their captain, crutches and duffel bag and all, ambling up to the bus.

Djordje Zubić was the first player to get up and hug his captain, showing restraint so as not to knock him off his foot. "How's the leg?"

"It's alright, man. You ok?" Rick asked.

"Yeah, man. Thanks for joining us."

It was just the right morale boost to get the team back on track. It was a cheery set of flights to and from Vikinias, and in the intermediate, the rejuvenated Phoenixes steamrolled their opponent 84-60. Zubić had 24 points and 12 rebounds. Jones saw his heirs apparent, Sifiso Ntenga, Cameron Wright, and Rodney Duncan, register meaningful time and positive performances.

He missed being out there, hated that he had to restrain himself while rallying on his squad, but he felt proud that he had fostered a program that could carry on the torch without him. He knew the team was in good hands whenever he was ready to step away.

Not just yet, though, he thought. Not without that ring.

Position: AORDO General
Nominee: Shining Armor
Nationality: Crystal Empire

Qualifications: High Commander, Imperial Guard / Chief of Staff, Equestrian Joint Command

Elevator Pitch: The Prince Consort of the Crystal Empire, Shining Armor is one of the finest military minds of his generation. Having come up through the ranks of the Canterlot Royal Guard, he was ultimately appointed Captain of the Canterlot Guard (arguably the most prestigious post in the entire Royal Guard aside from the position of Lord Commander) before his marriage to Princess Cadance. Shortly after his wedding, Shining Armor resigned his post as Captain of the Guard to take command of the newly-created Imperial Guard in the Crystal Empire following the land's return from temporal stasis.

Shining Armor would also be appointed Chief of Staff of Equestria's Joint Command, and helped oversee the modernization and enlargement of the force after Equestria emerged from its long international isolation. He has been one of Equestria's foremost strategists over the past few decades, protecting the Equestrians from their numerous enemies abroad and was one of its chief commanders during the recent Busoga Islands Conflict. Shining Armor would provide AORDO with an extremely gifted commander, one who has plenty of experience coordinating and overseeing coalition forces, namely those of the Crystal Empire and Equestria.

Image
Position: AORDO Command (Air Forces)
Nominee: Spitfire
Nationality: Equestria

Qualifications: Admiral, Royal Air Force

Elevator Pitch: The one-time Commander of the Wonderbolts (OOC: basically Equestria's Blue Angels), Spitfire is currently an Admiral in the Equestrian Royal Air Force, commanding the Pegasai Air Corps. As AORDO's Air Forces' Commander, Spitfire would bring a unique perspective to the position as the only candidate known to be naturally-gifted with the ability of flight.

Image
Position: AORDO Command (Special Forces)
Nominee: Moonless Night
Nationality: Equestria

Qualifications: Commander, Shadow Guard

Elevator Pitch: Very little is publicly-known about Moonless Night, Equestria's nominee for command over AORDO's Special Forces, but sources within the Equestrian government have confirmed that she was in command of the Shadow Guard (of which little is also known) during the Busoga Islands Conflict nearly a decade ago. The Shadow Guard is rarely spoken of in Equestria, although plenty of rumors abound regarding its size, composition, and actions. All that the Equestrian government itself will confirm is that the unit exists, it is a special detachment within the Royal Guard, and it reports directly to Princess Luna.

Image
Position: AORDO Command (Mage Corps)
Nominee: Arcane Dawn
Nationality: Equestria

Qualifications: Mage, Royal Mage Corps

Elevator Pitch: Viewing the omission of a formal AORDO Commander of its magic-using forces as a clear accident, the Equestrian government has nominated Arcane Dawn for the position. An experienced member of Equestria's Royal Mage Corps, Arcane Dawn saw action during the Liberation of the Busoga Islands and was decorated for her bravery. Arcane Dawn is viewed as a highly-capable administrator, serving as one of Archmage Sunset Shimmer's assistants.

Wait for it
Our team was struggling a lot
We were 0-6
We had been left no legacy
Just our respect to protect

Sport doesn’t discriminate
Between the unranked and ranked sides
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep playing anyway
We laugh and we cry and we break
And we make our mistakes
But if there’s a reason we are still playing the game
When so many have tried
Then I am willing to wait for it
Wait for it

We fought back against HUElavia
We won at home
We had been left no legacy
Just our respect to protect

Sport doesn’t discriminate
Between the unranked and ranked sides
It takes and it takes and it takes
And we keep playing anyway
We laugh and we cry and we break
And we make our mistakes
But if there’s a reason we are still playing the game
When so many have tried
Then I am willing to wait for it
Wait for it

This my very amateur attempt at parodying Wait for it! from Hamilton the Musical. I hope you liked it :)

RADIO TELEVIZIJA DOTIVIJA CITY - Sportski program 1

HOST DORIJAN USOVIĆ

Dear spectators welcome to the sport on Friday.
An unseen miracle, at least for us, is happening at the IBC tournament. The basketball players from Dotivija, our national team members, won four matches. They had a 4-1 ratio. But in the last two rounds they were defeated. However the very fact that they beat a national team like Delaclava is admirable.

No one expected such a good start from us. None of us expected to play great basketball. We also sent a team to the Olympics. I play brilliantly in this competition and we have reason to hope to pass. That would be a historic moment for our basketball. In fact, it would be a historic moment for our entire sport. Basketball now lives in every Dotivian. Let’s support our players, buy match tickets and come in as many numbers as possible.

Our wins

Dotivija 77–76 Vikanias

Delaclava 71–79 Dotivija

Ko-oren 76–81 Dotivija

Pemecutan 69–73 Dotivija

Our defeats

Dotivija 78–84 Malandrin

Dotivija 70–73 Abanhfleft

Greetings, compatriots!
It’s TTV with a most actual news from the world of basketball. As you all know, our national leader Vladimir Finn recently take a reins of Trolleborg basketball team.

The first test for the new coach was travel to Graintfjall. The place is familiar for our basketball players, and in a sense very significant - the world championship was held here two years ago, and our lads then achieved the best result in history, taking third place in the group and not making the playoffs only by points difference. Against the rather bleak general background of the history of our team, this is a success. And this time we had to play with one of the leaders of the group, who won 7 out of 8 games. In general, no one expected miracles from our lads. The general mood was something like this: they are good guys, in general, and not bad masters of their craft, but, apparently, basketball at the world level is not for us. However, this time, even people who are not very interested in this sport, sit closer to their TV-sets and TV-zones, since they had to see the national leader - contrary to the custom, he is not speaking on some issue, making a working trip or sharing some of joys and sorrows of the Trolleborg people, but in the unusual role of the head coach of the team. A huge number of people considered it necessary to support him, the number of those who watched the broadcast almost broke the Trolleborg TV broadcast record set during Baptism of Fire-71, and this is much more than the previous audience record while watching basketball.

At the earnest requests of basketball fans, taking over this post literally the day before, Vladimir Finn, of course, had no opportunity to seriously transform the team's game, but apparently his presence had a beneficial effect - immediately after the whistle, our lads rushed to the attack and quickly got the first two points with a new coach. "Well, at least our team was ahead once in this game!" - probably thought all the fans at that moment. But, as it turned out, our lads did not lost this advantage up to the end of the game and even build it up. By the first break +6, by the middle of the game +10, and at the end it was +16. An unexpected victory, but a very pleasant one.

And it must be noted, that sales of the drinks that usually used to celebrate successes in Trolleborg skyrocketed after the game ended.

The second game in the series was the away match at Magnecia. This team inflict us unexpected injury in the first game of tournament on our own field. Right now our lads had to play away game at the 70-thousandth capacity stadium with opponents, who too, like us, dreaming of getting out of the basement of the table,. But our fans made more than worthy competition to the local ones, even though there were less than a quarter of all spectators. And the team did not disappoint them, again showing fast, inventive, albeit not infallible, basketball, and having won with +36 points - at the same time again making the PA / PD ratio positive. This is biggest ever our victory in the basketball.

In general, we can summarize the first game according to our impressions and statements of experts as follows: we did not see any fundamental innovations in the style of play or tactics, but the dedication of the players and how they began to make their activity on the field underwent some changes for the better. How long this effect will be felt is the question.

Basketball association confirmed, that searching for a new coach with international experience continued.

Thomas Manningham has been known to get a little angry at times, but he usually manages to keep from completely blowing a gasket.

However, after the Sarzonian national basketball team dropped a match at home to unranked The Togolese Republic 77-62, Manningham lost his patience completely.

"That was fucking inexcusable!" he screamed as loudly as he'd ever screamed since he took the helm of the Sarzonia Stars basketball team. "This was the worst Goddamn fucking game I've ever coached!"

Mike West, who led the way with 16 points and five assists, also turned the ball over four times, including a stretch when Sarzonia finally managed to cut the Togolese lead to six midway through the fourth quarter. It led to a 3-pointer that not only made the match a three-possession contest; it also broke the back of Sarzonia's comeback efforts and led to a 12-0 run. Manningham lit into his shooting guard and team leader.

"What the fuck, Mike? You know better than to try forcing that pass!"

Manningham didn't show up for the post-match presser, but then called a press conference for the next morning.

"That was absolutely the worst match this team has ever played since I got here," Manningham said. "We were completely lacking in focus, in passion, and intensity. Frankly, I don't blame our fans one bit for booing."

He'd confronted a couple of fans in the stands who'd been especially loud in expressing their disapproval of the team's performance, but this time adopted a conciliatory approach.

"We stunk up the joint," he said. "We didn't play like a team worthy of the 11th rank in the basketball multiverse," he said, "and I accept responsibility for not getting us ready for that match."

The Stars began the second half of qualifying with the "embarrassing" loss to The Togolese Republic that dropped Sarzonia out of a second place tie with Valanora, but kept the Stars a game behind first place Srednjaci in the Group 1 table. The Stars have an away match against No. 17 Omerica and a home tilt against The Jovannic in the offing next. Manningham said "we better fucking be ready" for Omerica, whom the Stars narrowly defeated at home 69-66 on Matchday 2.

"We're going to have to play that one with a sense of urgency," West said. He said he completely understood his manager's anger over the team's "dismal" performance against The Togolese Republic.

"I didn't play well. None of us did," West said. "We didn't play with the effort and the intensity our fans expect. They let us know they weren't pleased with the performance and they have every right to do that."

Losing by twelve is quite bad
Where was our defense?
Were they tired?

Back to winning ways at home
Can we qualify?

DROP IT DOWN!: From Three To One

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Aug 08, 2021 8:57 am

After a comfortable win saw us return to form from the 1st bye, the Hoops-Jags of TJUN-ia was certainly bringing joy to their faithful at 6-1 entering almost halfway through this Group Stage. Bao Zhou has certainly moulded his Dynasty to be a tough opponent to play no matter the environment, a style the football team could only dream of, and he is certainly using that to good effect in this tournament so far. But two tough road games were on the horizon for this team and in order to keep up the pace, both would have to be dispatched in front of a tough crowd in packed arenas.

Up first was the Crystal Empire, a good friend of the Equestrian Empire and a pretty good basketball nation at #32 in the rankings heading into this tournament. They were a team that entered this game in 5th and looking to try and sneak into the playoffs in 4th, but tonight wouldn't be their night at all as the Jags played some great basketball in front of a hungry crowd of...Ponies? I think? Anyways, we were the better team during this one and the main man would be José Peñalez, 34 years young, who provided 23 points on his own as the Jags ended up 11-point victors overall, 76-65 the final score.

With Graintfjall losing to Trolleborg of all nations at home, that meant that TJUN-ia vs Drawkland would be both a Top 10 showdown and a duel for the Group 2 lead, with both teams entering this contest at 7-1. While the contest was in the "Land of the Immortals", as TJUN-ians call it due to the nation's like to immortality through the football team, the Basket Corps (?) wasn't up to scratch when the Jags came to town. Travarius Okuramangawa was an absolute beast tonight, providing 34 points (including 6 3-points) on route to the MVP of the Game Award without a shadow of a doubt. Just like the Crystal Empire, we beat Drawkland by 11 points, with the final score this time reading 92-81 in our favour.

From a 3-way tie, the Zhou Dynasty are now the last team standing at the top of the Group 2 tree. But we still have a long way to go before we start thinking about the playoffs in Chromatika in a few weeks time. We host the Super Wolves back in Riverside in a crucial game before travelling to the massive David Bird International Stadium in Worcester to taste what playing in Magnecia feels like. GO JAGS!

#8 on the list of the greatest Banijan athletes of all-time- Two-Time WBC champion Cyper Kandeh
The three-time Olympic gold medalist was the standout Banijan performer at the Olympiad on home soil

ISTRIA, MORAVICA- The World Baseball Classic. The multiverse's premier baseball championship. What a sport baseball is. A clearcut fourth on the Banijan sporting rung, behind soccer, gridiron, and basketball, in recent years the sport has garnered an emphatic, even if less large, of a following.

Of course, despite all that, it is the first sport where Banija, on the national team, rose to the cream of the crop. The last six cycles, Banija has established itself as an elite nation in the sport, with elite talent and high-level expectations. Six consecutive births in the quarterfinals, alongside placing on the medal podium twice- a bronze medal at WBC 46, winning it all at WBC 47, and then winning it all again in the most recent edition of the tournament at WBC 51.

It was stunning to see that, seemingly out of nowhere, we had developed a generation of Banijans who were not only capable of a miracle run(as many thought WBC 46 was), but building long-term, sustained success in the brutal difficulty of the international game. And there are many Banijans who define that generation. Players like Yakuba Kah. But what offensive player better defines these most recent years of Banija in international play better than Cyper Kandeh?

His Beginnings

Cyper Kandeh was born to some wealthy parents, in Sisonke, Kitara- a major city, but not that large of a city by any means. With an urban population of about 512,000 people, the Kitaran capitol ranks as the 11th largest city in the country. Growing up there, of course, he was a huge fan of the Kitara Athletic Association, which has professional sports teams in a number of Banijan leagues, most prominently the Shango-Fogoa Premier League in soccer, where they are former IFCF Champions League winners.

But although he liked watching soccer, he was never terribly great at it. Getting cut from varsity soccer in middle school, he decided to switch to baseball, where his middle school needed a couple of extra players just to be able to field a squad. His coach saw that he had a strong arm, so after putting him at third for a little bit, he switched him to the outfield. He played center field for his last year of middle school and first year of high school, when he switched to left field.

That's when he really learned how to hit- and his junior year of high school, Cyper Kandeh was really showing power. He hit 22 home runs his junior year of high school, and his senior year, he exploded. Hitting 30 home runs and hitting for a ridiculous .398 batting average, he was dominating the local competition in North Kitara, a fairly competitive region for the sport of baseball in the country.

As a freshman in college, he was absolutely dominant, continuing those gaudy numbers at the college level at GVU(Golden Valley). It earned him a call-up to the national team with the then brand new manager Ousman Kakay looking to the younger generation of ballplayers, and the manager putting the then 19 year old right in the heart of the order, batting fifth.

His Accomplishments

It starts and ends with the team accomplishments, right? Ousman Kakay brought on a new generation of players, who brought unprecedented baseball success into the country. Before WBC 46- Banijan baseball had entered quite a few WBCs, and we had never once advanced to the quarterfinals of the sport's most prestigious tournament. After Cyper Kandeh and co. entered the scene? We've gone at least that far in six consecutive tournaments. Two world titles.

And Cyper Kandeh, as a starter for all six tournaments and hitting in the heart of the order(5 and 3) during that run, deserves a lot of credit. His championship rings will tell you that. And he was at the center of those.

A clutch RBI single in Game 3 of the WBC 47 Championship Series, to give the Banijans a 1-0 lead in a game that would eventually become a 4-0 shutout over the Dragonflies of Ko-oren, which would also be the final result of the series, 4 games to none. In Game 4 of that same series, Cyper Kandeh, in a 2-2 ball game in the bottom of the sixth, hit a clutch, bases loaded, 2 out, 2 run ground rule double that put the Banijans on top for good, and led us into winning the title. So he hit the championship winning runs over the plate twice in that series. When you add in his solo home run in Game 1, that meant the left fielder got 4 RBIs during Banija's 4 game sweep of Ko-oren in the WBC 47 Championship Series.

That series simply showed how Kandeh was a clutch hitter who came through in the biggest moments. And even at 34, he came through in big moments for the Banijans again in the WBC 51 Championship Series. Starting the game winning rally against South Newlandia with a leadoff double in Game 2. A solo home run in Game 3. And a pair of doubles in Game 4, including a 2 run double that essentially iced the game for the Banijans. Clutch hitting in the Championship Series he's been in on multiple sides.

But those individual accomplishments, while impressive, do not show the full breadth of his impact. He's played a total of 83 games in the knockout stages of the WBC games in his career. In those alone, he has 22 career home runs- and in a total of 260 career WBC games in total, he's hit a total of 63 home runs, with a batting average of .311. Quite an impressive career in a sport that is so competitive.

Ultimately, what is his legacy? This sport was the fastest rise for the country in any of the sports we've had quick rises, at least the rise to winning a championship. His legacy is that his efforts, more than anybody's, have brought Banija from being nobodys in the sport to the top tier of the sport, with their current level of success being mentioned with the greats like Nova Anglicana, like Newmanistan, like Cassadaigua.

There's no better telling of sustained success than raising the bar. And that's what he's done. Thanks to his accomplishments, both as an individual and his accomplishments as a crucial player on the team, he's well deserving of the #8 spot on the 'best Banijan athletes of all time' list.

Other News
- The Lions find themselves at 9-0 and in sole possession of first place in Group 3. They forced overtime against Mytanija with Akabueze hitting a fadeaway two point as the buzzer sounded to tie the game at 82 at the Kabaka's Court in Busukuma. While one overtime could not seperate the two teams, we pulled away in the second overtime as Banija's depth was able to finally wear down Mytanija in that second five minute period. It leaves the Banijans atop the group, but it will likely see Mytanija be deemed the favorites for the return leg in Chromatika.
- The Mytanija game was their 8th win. Following that game up with a home game against Nova Anglicana, our Lions exploded on offense against their Lions, with our team going 7/8 from deep in the first corner to blow out Nova Anglicana by 29.
- During their bye week, the Banijan national teams will travel to Quebec for the first annual Quebec-Banija basketball superseries, to be played in Halifax.

More losses following one and only win
When it comes to sports a lot of things are debatable, as to who is the best quarterback in the multiverse and other such questions. But something which can never be debated is that the Bollonischian National Basketball Team has been utter shite in the 32nd International Basketball Championship. The team had arrived in the competition to build international experience ahead of the Olympics and also compete at the world level. However it has been made clear to as that we are nowhere close to the level to the rest of the teams having won only 1 game out of the 9 games we played which is the worst win percentage for any team in the competition. Things were looking to change with our win over HUElavia, however the process of us being dragged down to Earth was incredibly hasty as we suffered a costly defeat to Sarzonia, which put us last of our group with Half of the group stage over. Our next opponent was the Vanorian side we faced in Valanora. Playing away this was a game we didn’t expect to win, but hoped to pull off a good performance. But things like the rest of the tournament didn’t go to pan with us ending up losing the game 88-65 after what was 4 quarters of complete domination by the Vanorians.
Going into the Olympics, our players would want to forget this horrific incident in the 32nd IBC and aim to start afresh with good performances in the basketball tournament.

ALPHABET HOOP - THOUGHTS ON MYTANAR BASKETBALL
by Almedina Radovanovic

BANIJA THRILLER AND ‘TRULY MATURE ROAD PERFORMANCE’ KEEP SPIRITS HIGH

Mytanija went into this double-header against Banija and Zeta Reka and Hugeltaldom knowing that their undefeated record could go out the window and that it could be followed up with a humbling on the road to a potential banana skin team straight after. Expectations had skyrocketed over the course of the previous seven games as Mytanija won game after game, beating all sorts of teams ranked higher and lower and doing so in impressive fashion. This meant that despite the difference in ranking between Banija – the number one team in international basketball – and 39th ranked Mytanija, the Mytanar team went into the first game of the double-header confident and ready to cause a major upset.

They nearly did it too, coming very close to winning in regulation as they led 82-80 heading into the final moments. Banija would have the last play and Ibezimako Akabueze managed to wriggle free of Darko Belicanec’s clutches to hit a fade away jumper to level the scores and force overtime. That seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Mytanar team a bit, although that was probably normal given how hard they had worked to try and win against Banija on the road. It will perhaps demonstrate that the road to the top is going to be littered with difficult moments and that is something the whole Mytanar team could learn from. After Akabueze drained that shot on the buzzer Banija seemed to be in the ascendancy and were leading the way during overtime, Mytanija requiring a Fomin three to force double overtime and in that second period Banija were excellent. They limited Mytanija to only two points whilst scoring ten of their own and stretched away to claim the victory and remain the only undefeated team in Group 3.

The team showed that they can mix it with the very best and during regulation Mytanija might actually have had a case for deserving to win, such was the quality of the performance away from home court. They will want to set things right in the return match. Evgeny Fomin was once again crucial, leading the team in scoring with a mammoth 26 points and as always being crucial when rebounding and creating shot opportunities. He offered the Banijans a difficult challenge and Mirko Lazetic may be one step closer to solving ‘the Banijan problem’, using Fomin as a point centre causes their 1-3-1 zone all sorts of issues. The team couldn’t dwell on that defeat, a potential banana skin came straight after on the road to Zeta Reka and Hugeltaldom and Mytanija had to win if they wanted to keep pace at the top. Banija don’t look like slipping up at any point but the Mytanar team need to be within striking distance in case they do.

Luckily Mytanija were back to normal, limiting Zeta Reka and Hugeltaldom to only 59 points whilst Zelimir Ateljevic produced a triple-double (21pts/10rbs/11asts) at the other end and really drove the team’s scoring charge. It resulted in a comfortable victory and Mirko Lazetic described it as a ‘truly mature road performance’ following the game. He was particularly enthused with his team’s reaction to the loss against Banija, with the team more determined than ever to qualify from Group 3 at the earliest opportunity and showing real desire to put things right with a win in the very next game – something they delivered on. There does seem to be a special atmosphere amongst this team and they seem to have taken the #39 ranking personally over the course of this qualifying stage. Any team which can run Banija so close is a very good basketball team and that demonstrates the true level of this Mytanija roster.

They should take real confidence from this pair of games. Defeat isn’t always a bad thing if you can learn from it and move forwards and it looks like the team have discovered a new-found sense of belief in the aftermath of that loss against Banija. They really belong at the level of some of the top teams in this tournament and it was perhaps only the Banijans’ greater experience and nous which saw them through. Those things will come with time for the Mytanar team too. They now have a double-header against unranked nations Venmere and our Rushmori neighbours from the Gatchingerrak Union. Mirko Lazetic was quickly to emphasise that the team would have to remain focused against these opponents if they really want to reach the level of nations like Banija: ‘you just don’t see them losing those games, so that’s what we have to emulate’.

We're never losing again!

After 7 straight losses to start the IBC, the Dragonflies put all of its lessons learned to good use with two consecutive victories. One over Pemecutan, a low scoring, 4-point win over a 3-6 team, and the other over Malandrin, another 3-6 team but the difference in this one was 17 points! It'll all come crashing down with Abanhfleft, Chromatika, and Delaclava (all 7-2) on the schedule, but you need small victories to reassure that yes, in fact, you're building towards something and you're on the right track. Let's not kid ourselves: the neutral fans weren't watching our games in Group 5. Our games coincided exactly with Delaclava versus Abanhfleft and Delaclava versus Chromatika. The latter even beat out Ko-oren versus Malandrin in TV ratings... in Ko-oren.

Knowing that we can in fact stay close to teams ranked in the 20s, maybe the pre-tournament target of winning six games isn't so far fetched anyway. After a bye, the Dragonflies will take on Dotivija and Vikanias back to back - and we totally could be 4-7 after those - before heading into the brutal stretch of Delaclava, Abanhfleft, and Chromatika. After that, there's just two games left: Hispinas and Pemecutan. If we 'just' win the winnable games and not look too terrible in the other ones, going 6-10 isn't a weird target at all. If we lose any of the winnable games, we need an upset, which just doesn't look possible as it stands. Juliet Shillington, 'relegated' to the post of head coach of a less-than-optimal national team after a history of ripping any opponent in the IBC a new one in the late 10s, is positive: "Well, none of the teams I ever lost an IBC finals to are in the tournament, today, so I think we can go places."

Across the first nine games, discounting the first few where the team was just trying to find their feet, it's hard to identify a clear standout performer. The forward duo from Couziers, Bernard and Melanson, have worked especially well together on pick and roll plays and inside passes. The hope was that Mayara Blues' Gunausinthen could direct the team's offence, but so far he hasn't delivered. No, instead it seems to be SG Adri Roy who's leading this team: she led the team in assists in five out of nine games, consistently ranks in the team's top three scorers, at the highest FG%. The Dragonflies aren't lucky when it comes to blocking shots and forcing turnovers: C Ruben Dantes is too easily bypassed by our opponents, and PF Noia can't reliably beat his direct opponents in the rebound battle. Things are, however, getting better, so hopefully before the end of the group stage we can report on players comfortably beating their direct opponents, and directly improve their teammates' performances.

SF/PF #0 Mariam Corr. 6'3. 22 years old.

Notes:
- This team likes to play a 2-1-2 zone defense. They will pack the paint to make it tough to get to the rim, but they are susceptible to getting beat with the jump shot, especially on the deep ball.
- The closeout lineup is the same as the starting lineup.
- This team will run at almost any chance they get. While rebounding, especially on defense, is the team's weakest link, when they do get a rebound, they are able to push the ball, and so quickly.
- For the group stages, this team's rotation runs 12 deep. However, they will almost certainly shorten the rotation to 8-9 players come the knockout stages.

The Taegukgi: The Korean-language voice of the Quebecois Commonwealth

Quebec survives against a tough Banijan opposition, wins by 14 in a Quebec-Banija SuperSeries thriller

Yoon-Heui Jacobsson

HALIFAX, ACADIE - BNJ 19-23 QUE | BNJ 41-41 QUE | BNJ 52-69 QUE | BNJ 70-84 QUE

Unsatisfactory. That's probably the closest way of putting it for the Quebecois women's national team. As a nation, this was their 14th consecutive victory against Banija in international women's match, with the squad having won last two Quebecois Commonwealth Games, making the Olympic Quarterfinals with a squad bugged by stomach illnesses and injuries all tournament, and has been serving as the key core to the IBC teams of last fifteen years. Having come off a poor loss to Felinetopia earlier this week, this marked the halfway point for the 32nd International Basektball Championships' qualifying round.

It is with this in mind that, Riley Jeon-Keane had said with a grim face in the postgame conference of the Women's match of the Quebec-Banija SuperSeries, that Quebecois women were simply not performing to the expectation. 'I am not impressed with the rate we've been performing, and neither are our players. We expect to keep working on reaching the level of excellence, and avoid making same mistakes that have cost us games in the first half.'

For most part, the narrative was similar, with the Quebecois ending up with a solid enough of a lead. The Quebecois, superior on height and teamwork, with the players having played with each other for very long time on developmental level teams and against each other on college, had little trouble using the clock, and used their advantage on the boards to win the match. One side was able to use the full depth of twelve women well, and other had to rely upon their starters more, to remain in the chase. That's how the last Commonwealth Games quarterfinals went, the one before, and et cetera - no need to further discuss that.

Of course, if you look deeper into the analysis and not just the scoreboard, that's not how it exactly turned out. The first half was neck-to-neck affair for both teams, compared to past contests, as the Banijans came on fire with their offensive drives, committing themselves to trap and zone defence that limited the utility of the Quebecois swing players, and played well on the rebounds. You could see during the timeouts when the Quebecois coaching staff, also frustrated with the low conversion rate for the players, had to keep telling the women to stay patient, own up to their passes, and make sure to keep rolling until an ideal outcome's found. It was a matter of pride for the Quebecois women, and Riley Jeon-Keane had to constantly change up the rotations, and substitute players to remind them that it's not over.

For both teams, the 41-41 tie was a rare experience in that there was no clear lead established for the Quebecois. For Banijans, this was a gigantic success, making up from 12-point deficit they held by this point in the Quebecois Commonwealth Games quarterfinals last summer, and the explosiveness they held from the 1, and their commit defence vs. the Quebecois' weak spot on the 2 were more than enough to suggest that the Lionesses were there for real. For Quebec and Shingoryeo, on the other hand, this was a sluggish start.

But the Quebecois still knew they were on the edge, especially as the advantage on height and physicality remained against the smaller Banijan team that previously capitalised their strategy of packing the inside. As the third half began, the Quebecois went on a run, and it couldn't have started any better with the play of the match. Looking at the basketball from halfcourt line, Heo Myeong-Yoon slowly dribbled with her left, dominant hand. As Nyonkoling Mboge and Kabir Outtara tried to cover the 185cm point guard, she bounced twice to make a solid pass to Hazel Hanson-Conavacio, who aggressively drove to the basketball towards the paint. In noticing her presence, Nyima Ba and Tomaring Ngom quickly raised their hands to aim for a clean block.

But it was not Hanson-Conavacio who made the shot, as the small forward, noticing that Yim Se-Ryeong's slow to guard, instead passed backwards to Jin Chang-Sook on the corner. Patiently waiting on the far corner, she was able to shoot with the ball, in a clean motion, scoring the first of four triples for the second half. 44-41, and the rest went along. With a couple of well-timed blocks and a trademark Hanson-Conavacio layups, the three-point lead gradually grew for the Quebecois, and the more they attacked, the more worn out were the Lionesses. With the 17 point lead by the fourth quarter, coach Jeon-Keane started substituting backups who struggled against their opponents, but were able to hang on for most of the match. By the time, it was the Quebecois who came away with a victory, as the scoreboard indicated Banija 70–84 Quebec and Shingoryeo.

With the game over, both teams' players shook hands with each other, a couple of them giving each other hugs, and they clapped back at the home crowd, who shouted 'One more! One more!' at them. Once again the Quebecois women were victorious even though the Grim Reapers, having been shocked in a tough loss to Felinetopia earlier in this window, knew there was a lot more work to be done. As the post-match press conference went on, lots of words were said. 'It's true that there are quite a few Banijan players who would excel in the QWBL,' said Heo Myeong-Yoon, the women's team captain. 'Quebecois Commonwealth does have a good depth of basketball players and the competitions do get tougher every year. We will have to ensure same mistakes won't be made in future competitions, whether IBC or Commonwealth Championships or 'The Games', as we had committed for the first half.'

Then the crowds went into the streets to have a night, as they awaited the second match of the series. The battle between the number one men's team in the Multiverse and the heavy underdogs in Quebec the very next day.

The Phoenixes hadn't been to the Red and Black since the Banija Lions came in and whipped them 90-72 to take the 31st International Basketball Championship, and leave the Phoenixes in tears and with bittersweet silver around their necks. Truth be told, some of the players on the team weren't too keen on returning to the scene of that last defeat, with their campaign already on slightly shaky ground, even as they were rejoined by their captain Rick Jones on the road trip to Vikanias.

They needn't have worried, really. The house was packed well before the Phoenixes even took the court for warmup, and the passionate support was deafening as they took the court for their first layups. And it was clear that the venue was treating this as a homecoming, a celebration rather than a cruel reminder. It was the official reunion of the miracle finalists, and they invited the members of the IBC 31 team who had not gotten the call for this go-round. And there was no bitterness from Caelen Knight and Zachary Bates and Jay Francis and Obdulio Herrera, only smiles for the camera, hugs for their former teammates and successors, wishes to bring home that trophy this time.

The Delaclava basketball team was finally back home.

And they played like it too. Abanhfleft was the seventh-ranked team in the world, former champions, once a dynasty. They had a fresh new generation ready to take the mantle, and had started off 7-0. And the Phoenixes completely embarrassed them. Djordje Zubić shot and passed and shut down Anthony Jabillo at will. Sifiso Ntenga had perhaps his finest defensive performance yet in holding Evan Alicante to eight points. Brian Dudley, the point guard who needed a breakout game in his first IBC, got one with his first international triple double - 19 points, 11 rebounds, 14 assists. The game was over by halftime as the Phoenixes romped to a 96-69 victory, and it took minutes after the final whistle for the adoring fans to finally tire of cheering their players, long gone from the court, before stumbling on home.

The fans were back in full force just days later. The Phoenixes were not. The Chromatika Penguins were back, and they intended on completing the sweep on enemy ground. The lengthy Lia Xiu was again just too much of a matchup problem and scored practically at will as the Chromatiks held a seven-point lead at halftime. The red-and-gold (and now a bit more purple) clad fans wouldn't give up on their team that easily. Coach Jim Levins had the 6-foot-8 Lorenzo Austin face guard Xiu for nearly the entire second half, and as the Penguins stumbled to figure out their next-best option, it was none other than Djordje Zubić who took control of the game, running the floor and finding Dudley and Pekko Ranta for three-point goals, or practically running through the Chromatik front court to get to the hole himself. This time, unlike their visit to the Capitalizt Dome, the Phoenixes set the tempo and won the race to the finish.

The final score was 83-79 when the horn thankfully sounded. Zubić, who seemed to become progressively histrionic with every pressure game, dropped to his knees and pumped his fists in the air in relief before being picked up by Omar Harris to join the celebrations. The Phoenixes were back in style, they were winning in every which way possible.

In a matter of days, in a corner of Atlantian Oceania that's often an afterthought to the world around it, a championship caliber team was again reborn.

One Month Before the IBC

August Andreasson was getting ready to leave for the day after the last long practice session before the team would be transitioning into one a day practices until two days before the start of the Championships. While Vanorians typically were a tough bunch, usually not suffering any major injuries, August was not going to take any chances as he was wanting to at long last prove that the Dragons were actually an elite team. It was not likely going to be easy with a very heavy group stage that was going to be a home and away format but the knockouts stages were going to be set in Chromatika. Some up and comers as well as a few people who wanted to bring not just the Dragons but the entire Empire down a peg was definitely going to make the group stage a lot more difficult than August would have liked, yet it really did not matter. The groups were what the groups were, the team had to adjust and play those who were put in front of them, even if it was the most difficult path or the most easy, there was nothing they could do but play the games that were put on the schedule.

His eyes went wide when he looked at an e-mail from Ilse Sjöberg, the youngest player that was likely going to be part of his starting five once the Championships had actually began, titled as "Per Your Request". The coaches eyes darted quickly left to right as he read the contents of the e-mail and could hardly believe his eyes, laughing at himself for a moment as he let the content of the letter sink in. It was odd that the team had decided to let Ilse be the one to send their response to the challenge that he had given to the team a month before, a challenge that had seemed to upset the lot of them. August understood though, it was going to be a complete change to the whole way that they were going to operate as a national team and as players moving forward. If they wanted to keep on the team, they were going to have to abandon the idea that this was the only team and the only competition that they were expected to compete in and test themselves against, they were going to have to go out there and have whole new experiences and then come back the stronger for those new experiences they were going to go through.

It was the youngest and with the most ahead of them that had sent the message, highlighting that they were not happy with the decision but if August really believed that this was the way for the Dragons to finally get over the proverbial hurdle that kept slowing them down year after year, the team was willing to dig in and do as was being asked despite their displeasure. The team had been consulting with their agents in the interim and each and every one of the players had put pen to paper on a contract with one of the teams in the domestic league in the Empire. They had taken the talk about the elite league being at their fingertips to heart and most of the team had been able to sign on to one of the usual contenders for the EBA title, with three players even managing to sign on with the Monarchs who had pulled off the impossible and had become the first Vanorian team to win the IUBC, the Champions' League of basketball. It had taken a little shove but he was really proud of his entire team and he had to figure out a way to subtly congratulate them. However the biggest way to do that was to actually show their dedication to the idea and bring the team to the semifinals of the upcoming tournament, a task that would be difficult but it was the task that they all knew was their ultimate goal.

Defense Is For Nerds: The Spontaneously Told and Erratic Tale of Ranoria's IBC 32 Campaign; Chapter 3
Ranoria @ Drawkland

Reiner Anneliese broke off his sprint with a jump, looking to knock the ball loose from big Brian Campbell's hand...only for the center to look down at him, confused, while standing on his tippy toes to put the ball in the hoop. Fortunately, they were graced with a timeout after, as the score was now 39-16 in favor of Drawkland with the half set to end in just under a minute.

"Dude," Bertolt Hali helped the star up, shaking his head, "What are you doing running around playing defense like that? Don't you remember our talk?"

"What, getting your obligatory minute of game action in?" he managed to shoot back, already gasping for breath. He was giving everything he had to stop them on defense, but it was fruitless. Their smallest player, Erik Antonise, was four inches taller than him. Most of their starters had almost a foot on him.

"Reiner," Hali deadpanned him, "You've gotta focus on what matters in this game. You aren't putting up points like you can because you're exerting yourself on the other side of the court. Remember buddy, defense is for nerds."

"Right right," Reiner stood, glaring at the clock, "Get back to the game."

The half ended with a Net Corps three pointer, courtesy of Autumn Trallen, to make it 45-12. And as the team went in for halftime, Reiner Anneliese shot Billy Garrett, his coach, a look.

"Coach, I'm gonna stay out here," he tapped the side of his head, "See if I can't get myself a bit more dialed in." Garrett, who most believed couldn't actually be bothered to care, shrugged and allowed it.

So Reiner plopped down on a seat. Deep breath in. Bertolt Hali's words after their loss to TJUN-ia rang in his head

"Trying to stop the other team from scoring never saved anybody, teams score a hundred or more all the time, it's just not efficient."

Deep breath out, his fingers twitched in anticipation of what was to come.

"Joking? My dad told me, when I was just in middle school, and had lost my first game, 'Son, defense is for nerds,'"

Deep breath in. His features softened as the tension disappeared. He knew what he had to do.

"Remember buddy, defense is for nerds."

He was so in tune with his senses by now that he heard his team taking the court again, and his eyes shot open. Anneliese gave himself just a few seconds of clarity before his eyes narrowed and teeth grit against one another. "Defense. Is. For. Nerds."

Anneliese slammed the ball through the net with a roar, beating his chest on the way down with just over a minute left in the fourth quarter. After his team had been put on lock throughout the first half, they had come roaring back to the tune of a team-record 58 points in the second half so far. The Grid Corps was holding onto a lead, but it was a narrow one at 90-84.

Anneliese had finally taken the advice of the worst player on the team - and maybe in pro Ranorian basketball (seriously, no one knows how the hell he's getting paid to do this) to heart. He had played completely uninspired defense while turning into hell-on-wheels with the ball in his hand. Want proof? He was responsible for 29 of those 58 second half points, for a total of 39 on the night so far. But with so little time left, he did at least allocate a bit of exertion to rebounding a wayward Grid Corps shot.

Anneliese drove down the court, passed the ball out to Roster Standin, took his place in the corner, got the ball back, and the shot was nothing but net. They were within 3 of bringing down one of the best teams in IBC history.

The clock was down to just thirty seconds when Darren Roser put whatever ambition Ranoria had of winning this one to rest with a deep three pointer. Roser hadn't even set up, simply come out, put it up, and didn't even watch when it went down. He knew the Krauts were out of their league...and it took just a few seconds of full-go on his part to show it.

Reiner watched as the ball fell, and realized that they'd lost even as he fired up one last wayward shot to try and close the gap as much as possible, only for the Drawkian crowd to roar as someone got a free game-used ball.

"Can't win 'em all, Reiner." Bertolt sighed, "Maybe if you hadn't played so much defense in that first half, you could've scored more, and then we'd have won!"

"Yeah, I guess so," Reiner replied with a grumble. So much for what he'd thought was an appifiny.

INTERNATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 32

BEARS BETTER THAN OMERICA BUT YOUNGSTERS ARE BEATEN IN NEXT MATCH
BY
Danijel Grlić

Srednjaci 74–66 Omerica

Home match against one of the toughest opponents in our group ended well eventualy.
Omerica started wery fast in attackin and solid in defence. So in first quarter, our best team didn’t manage to impose their game. Omerica finished first quarter with a lead, 18:21.
Second quarter, we are looking same situation. Omerica players keap high level of their play. They doesn’t show any crack. First half time finished with a lead of goests with 36-40.
But in third quarter our players show much better play. First Paradinović steal the ball and Matković scored for three points. Than in next attack of Omerica our players played amazing zone defence. Omericas players running of the time in that attack and lose the ball. At that moment, scoring board started to change in our favour.
Best player was Paradinović with 26 pts., 10 assists an 8 rebo.

" We know that's gonna be tough match. I am glad that we make a step forward in the second half time. This was a wery good match and we defend home field. That is very important." said Paradinović after the match.

Srednjaci 77–80 The Jovannic

Young BEARS couldn’t repeat of their older team mates. The Jovannic take all points from Katanija. This was bad idea of our staff or just bad day of young team? We will see. However, Srednjaci have now second defeat. No one expect this defeat.
Our young players playes very well. During the game, young bears had a lead almost all time. But in the end, The Jovannic have last word. In the last attack Jovannic players make a score for three points and win the game.
Awfull way to lose.
Srednjaci still have a lead but this is much worse situation than before.

DROP IT DOWN!: Perfection Followed By A Crack

Postby TJUN-ia » Mon Aug 09, 2021 6:59 am

After two more good wins, the Hoops-Jags of TJUN-ia were still in a brilliant position on the road to the Playoffs in Chromatika - but Bao Zhou didn't want to take any chances at all. Sure, his Dynasty was playing some electric basketball at the moment, but he knew that this run of form could all come crumbling down in an instant. With that in mind, he tried to push on for the next two games, striving for perfection at every turn.

Up first was a very big game as the Super Wolves of Graintfjall came to town, looking to bounce back in the race for Top 3 in front of the Unity Centre faithful. Riverside was certainly up for this big game and you'd better believe the players were as well. The Jags took to the home crowd brilliantly and that would end up pushing them along throughout the contest. Noel Skíðisson was pretty good tonight with 23 points, but DeMarcus Winston helped with 35 all on his own as he pushed TJUN-ia to a 16 point victory as we pushed out to 9-1 overall, a brilliant record for this deserving unit.

But then, just as prophecised by Zhou himself, the magic came crumbling down in Worcester as 70,000 people watched their Bulls of Magnecia take on our Jags at the David Bird International Stadium. Mike Rhoades and his team were certainly looking for a big win themselves to try and keep in the running for Top 4 and so, they played this contest like a team unrecognisable to one we played in Riverside a few weeks back. Joe Brown was still as brilliant as before, but his teammates came to play as well with Tom Walker and Stephen Willis, in particular, putting up good performances for the hosts tonight. Zhou's Dynasty still played well tonight, no question at all, but tonight wouldn't be their night as they fell by 9 points, the first defeat since MD2 in Græntfjall.

Back in 2nd after a 2nd defeat, we are now only behind Drawkland by point differential - but still in a brilliant position to qualify from this group to the playoffs itself. We will host Saturn for Game 12 before our 13th, unlucky for some, will see the Dynasty travel to face the Trolls of Trolleborg. No matter how hard defeat may be taken, we must simply move on and progress to the elite level some say we are destined for. GO JAGS!

Banijan men claw to one point victory in Halifax at the Quebec-Banija Superseries

HALIFAX, ACADIE- The Quebec-Banija SuperSeries. A one-off set of games, competitive between two longtime rivals, that simply add another chapter to the storied rivalry of Quebec-Banijan basketball. Quebec has always been strong, particularly on the women's side- but in recent years, Banija has gone up and surpassed Quebec on the men's side, with some work to do still on the women's side.

The women's game was closer than expected, although the Quebecois ended up pulling away in the second half and winning quite handily. What about the men? The two men's teams stepped out onto the Court. The Banijan men, fresh off of a home blowout victory over group rivals Nova Anglicana, and in search of a threepeat here at the IBCs, they wanted another competitive game against quality opposition before eventually reaching the knockout stages in Chromatika. Nova provides that, Mytanija provides that- why not a trip to Halifax?

The Banijans, with their talent and recent form, having gone undefeated at three consecutive major tournaments before falling to Pluvia and the Saxaean Isles in the Quarterfinals of AOBC VI, and starting 10-0 at this tournament, seemed to be heavy favorites. But with the home crowd behind them, and a similar motivation for Quebec as they search for their first IBC title, seemed to invigorate the Grim Reapers and give them plenty of energy to start off the game.

The women's game was filled with the expectations, and the energy was different- expectant of and demanding a blowout, one that they probably should've gotten, showed the strides the Banijan women's team has made in closing the gap- and yet, the still considerable distance that remains. On the men's side, however, hope rang true. And so, with an engaged partisan home crowd, tip off went and the Quebecois fans were on top of things from the beginning.

An Ebrahima Faye midrange jumper opened the scoring on the game's first possesion. But the Quebecois men then started fast- an early 10-0 run, with a few great defensive possesions. When it was 7-2, Kenneth Kim-Asfaw went directly at Antouman Ceesay on a diagonal cutting move towards the basket, who was anchoring the 1-3-1 after a rotation. Forcing the big center to pick up his second foul in just his third minute of the game, while picking up the and-1, was key, in messing up Banija's rotation early and staying on the front foot.

The hot start for Quebec led to a back and forth game for the rest of the first half, as the hosts led throughout and it was a series of punches and counterpunches. We'd score a few baskets in a row, and that'd be followed by the hosts scoring a few in a row- Quebec never really being able to expand their lead into double digits, while we closed the gap for a lot of the first half while we could not completely eliminate it. So outside of 2-0, Quebec basically led from wire to wire in the opening 20 minutes, and the halftime score of 39-33, with Quebec in the lead, was probably a fair reflection of how the first half went.

It would be the third quarter where things would get really interesting. Antoumann Ceesay, who only played six minutes in the first half because of his early foul trouble, came back into the game and was fresh. Isaiah Lavaga wanted to experiment with the lineup. The depth for the Lions had always been so key in their last few runs, with bench players able to play important minutes in big games and contribute against the best of the best. To start the second half, we went small. Running Akabueze at the point, with Faye at the 2, Israel Arefani at the 3, Bullo at the 4, and Zufan Hawani at the 5. Switching things up- trying to run the Quebecois out of their own building.

And it worked. 5 athletic players, even if undersized at center for a few minutes, could change the complexion of the game. And they did exactly that. After getting a stop and a rebound, Hawani immediately whipped the ball out to Akabueze, who flew up the court, looking for an outlet pass. The star point guard pulled up for a three point at the top of the key and hit it, and he beat his chest as he could feel the momentum start going his way.

The two teams traded misses for about a minute, with Bullo and Arefani missing a pair of jumpers for the Banijans, while Matthieu Kabengele missed a pair of heavily contested midrange Js. And then, the Banijan offense got hot. Down 39-36, Akabueze ran a pick and roll with Ezekiel Bullo. It's a dangerous game when these two pick & roll, two of the probably top 10 players in the multiverse today. Akabueze flew past the pick, and the center moved down to help against Akabueze getting to the basket. Akabueze simply floated the ball up to Bullo on the backside who had rolled, and he slammed the ball down, making it a one point game. He put his finger on his lips to silence the crowd.

The next possession saw an easy transition layup. An errant pass was intercepted by Ebrahima Faye, who saw Akabueze flying up the court. A perfect deep lead pass from the Banijan 2-guard saw Akabueze make a contested breakaway layup at the rim. All of a sudden, the score was 40-39. After a nice midrange jumper from Hawani made the score 42-39, Akabueze again had the ball at the top of the key. Another pick & roll with Bullo, as both men rolled to the rim. However, Arefani was sitting wide open in the corner. Akabueze found him. The quick release made any late shot contest worthless, and the ball was nothing but net.

This was the way the Lions were capable of playing- 12 deep, blitzing opponents. As Head Coach Jean-Gabriel Watt called timeout, the Banijans clapped it out in front of a nearly silent stadium hear in Halifax. The run was over, but it was important- a 12-0 run that flipped the game, and ensured that even 4 minutes into the 3rd quarter, the Quebecois still hadn't scored thanks to the stellar defense of the Lions. From that point forward, however, the game was really tight. Both coaches were frequently rotating, experimenting with different lineups, but the intensity was there. Neither team wanted to lose to their fierce rival.

We came down to 3 minutes left in the fourth. We had our closeout lineup in the game, with Bartaba in for Ceesay. Clearly, Lavaga had put a premium on getting a win here in Halifax. It was 67-66, a slim one point lead in favor of the hosts. But we had one thing they did not have- Ezekiel Bullo. And he was in takeover mode. The superstar and now the leader, he got the ball in the post against Daniel Ibaniyama, the team captain. He simply outmuscled the Kingston Raptors player, backing him down all the way to the rim, and then hitting a fadeaway in the post to make it 67-68.

The Quebecois came back down and, unfortunately, it would be Bahng Se-Woong hitting a three as time expired on the shot clock to regain the lead, making it 70-68. The Banijans would need another score. The ball went back to Bullo. A cutting Ebrahima Faye came around an off ball screen, and caught the ball at the free throw line. Faye shot the ball, an open 15 footer, but it hit back iron and bounced out, rebounded by Noh Seung-Hoon. Down two with 2 minutes left, we needed a stop. And we got one. Akabueze, picking up Bahng Se-Woong at halfcourt, swiped the ball from him, and flew down the court, getting the layup to tie the game at 70.

There was not a single butt in a seat now. 70-70, under two minutes left. On our next possesion, we got a stop, meaning we came coming back up the court. Kizza Alanso attacked the basket, but was fouled and could not make the shot. He made 1/2 from the line, missing the first and making the second, to give our squad a slim 71-70 lead. But as Kenneth Kim-Afsaw cut to the basket, he saw Matthieu Kabengele back out to the corner. He made a brilliant crosscourt pass as the defense collapsed onto him, and Kabengele was not going to miss that one. 1:10 left in the game, the wide open three was a perfect swish. 73-71 in favor of the Quebecois.

As we came back down the floor, we knew- we needed a bucket. The ball went to Akabueze, at the top of the key. Bullo was in the corner. Alanso set a screen in the corner, and Bullo came flying off the screen, getting the space needed to get the basketball. He got the ball and immediately cut to the basket. He pulled up from about 10 feet away, and hit a beautifully formed jumper to tie the game at 73. 52 seconds left. On Quebec's ensuing possesion, it'd be Bullo that'd step up again. The Grim Reapers, dribbling on the perimeter, simply tried to swing it around the outside. But Bullo leaped in front of the basketball for an interception. And suddenly, it was a two on one, with him and Akabueze against Kim-Afsaw. The smaller Quebecois shooting guard didn't stand a chance, and Akabueze threw a perfect alley-oop on the breakaway, which Bullo grabbed in the air and threw down.

He let out a yell, and then ran back to get back onto defense. 75-73, Banija. Quebec tried to get themselves in position for a basket. But As Kim-Afsaw went to the basket, he was fouled by Kizza Alanso. 31 seconds left. Kim-Afsaw hit the first free throw. And then- missed the second. Stunning the stadium. Banija grabbed the rebound, and the ball went to the hands of Akabueze. Still plenty of time on the clock, and with a 7 second differential, Quebec was going to play straight up defense, as Banija held on to their slim 75-74. Akabueze held the ball at the top of the key, with the point guard calling for isolation.

With a few seconds left in the shot clock, Akabueze went to the rim, and then tried to fade away from about 17 feet to ice the game as the shot clock buzzer sounded. But he could not hit. Quebec got the rebound and with the clock ticking, Daniel Ibaniyama with the rebound threw the ball downcourt to Kim-Afsaw, who was flying down the floor. Kim-Afsaw caught the ball, and went to the rim, with enough time hit the game winning layup right before time expired.

But Ezekiel Bullo was flying back on defense. Kim-Afsaw did not see him. Kim-Afsaw slowed down just a second, knowing he had enough time- just to stabilize himself? But as he released the ball on the layup, Bullo flew in from behind and swung his right hand, getting all of the ball before it could hit the rim. He swung his arm, and the ball flew into the backboard and careened down onto the court. Ebrahima Faye, trailing the play, picked up the ball as the final buzzer sounded and time expired.

What a game. Banijan players flew out to Ezekiel Bullo, to celebrate his game-saving block on the game's final play. The crowd all collectively gasped at the play, as the upset win was ripped from them in the final moment. Quebecois players looked stunned at how the final result went down. They watched the replay shown on the jumbotron, as the spattering of Banijan fans in the building celebrated. After a couple of moments celebrating for Banija, they stopped and shook their hands of their opponents, celebrating a hell of a basketball game.

Head Coach Isaiah Lavaga talked about it afterwards. "It's about the desire, the hunger, the will to win we have." He told reporters. "Anytime we play Quebec, it's important- they're our chief rival in this sport. We're the top two ranked teams in the IBCs. We're the top two teams in the Commonwealth. They've made some serious strides, but we've shown tonight that we're still top dogs out here. And hell- what a hustle play by Bullo. What a block. Plays like that are why I think Bullo is the best player in international basketball. You saw what he did at the end of today's game- key bucket after key bucket. The key steal. And this game saving block. What a tank."

Bullo, for himself, said that the atmosphere was fantastic. "I can't wait until the next IBCs, when the SuperSeries is held back home." He told reporters. "What an atmosphere this was. This game, these kind of games- they help us going forward. First, it's important in and of itself to beat Quebec. They are our rivals. These games mean something. But beyond that, it's great preparations for the rest of the IBCs. We've got some crucial games upcoming, especially our trip to Mytanija on the final Matchday of the group stages. They're gonna have us circled on their calendar. We could be playing for a lot in that game, and being able to pull out a close win, especially on the road, against an elite team is not something that comes easily to anyone. It takes heart, and it takes hard work. This game shows the roster, especially our newer players, just how hard it is to win these sort of games at this level."

"And think of the teams that we could play when we reach Chromatika. Not Newmanistan, but teams like Delaclava, Equestria, Chromatika, Drawkland, Valanora, and this Quebecois team- just a small sample of teams that could give us a run for our money. Those back and forth physical encounters, that's how those will go, and we need to prepare for them by succeeding here. I'm happy with our win here, and now we will strive to continue to get better before our trip to Rushmore on Matchday 18."

Wins in both games, coupled with a Lisander loss in either of their next two games, will clinch Banija a spot in the top 3 for the group, and along with it a berth in the knockout stages of this tournament. It was a close, grind it out type of game when we last played Venmere on the road, and with Venmere upsetting Mytanija in Mytanija on Matchday 11, Banija cannot afford to take that game for granted.

VNBT ROCKETS OUT OF NOWHERE

In a stunning move, the Venmere National Basketball Team won three games in a four game stretch, while it had taken them eight just to win one. The streak, featuring a shocking upset win against Mytanija, saw Venmere shoot from dead last up to 6th in Group 3.

Coach Perry Whittaker was interrupted in the middle of dancing with his players following the 77-72 defeat of world no. 39 Mytanija to give an interview, but he just enthusiastically hugged the reporters and then jumped right back into the fray. The players are having the time of their lives here now that they aren't doing terribly, and suddenly they might have a chance at making the knockout stage. It's a long shot, to be sure, but so was beating Mytanija.

When he was finally dragged away from the jubilee, Coach Whittaker said, "we're probably not going to make the knockout stage. But we're going to have one heck of a time no matter what happens!"

Following this pronouncement, Coach had the water cooler dumped on his head.

VNBT Basketball doesn't get much better than that.
