A good thought, but there are RL reasons why I went with the 24th as a start date. I'd better stick to it.

Rosters are welcome at any time; I'll get a schedule up over the weekend.

Tyrrin is returning to the Ultimate Cup with a rearranged lineup. They have done a bit more research, worked out a bit more, and even held a practice or two. This is a much more motivated squad that is ready to take on the world. Their only challenge will be learning to play as a team, as many of these men have never met each other before. Their starting lineup will change due to the other team’s starters and how stoned/hung over the players are come game time.

They use the same kits as the football team.
ImageImage
James Steel is a 6’5” menace at any place on the field. He has an excellent flick, and even better catching abilities as he uses his height to make spectacular diving and leaping grabs. His only downside is that he will throw a few passes away occasionally when he gets too excited on offense. Off the field, he is steely and competitive.

Robert Blake is a former cross-country runner with enough stamina for the entire team. He also has the best arm on the team, and will frequently huck the disc down the field, and also usually handles the team’s pulls. He combines this with great on-field communication skills and great hands and defensive awareness.

Mark Columbo is quickly feared by every team he faces. He usually keeps a low profile in games, often ducking below people so the defense can’t see him. Then he will mutter “Put it up,” and a team member will hurl the disc down field for Columbo to snatch eleven feet in the air with his balls in a defender’s face. He uses the same tactic on defense, and the other team rarely sees him coming. He is fairly soft-spoken off the field, but his work rate is impressive.

Ernie Broadstreet is a decathlete on the Tyrrinian Olympic team. He also plays Frisbee, and is incredibly skilled, with a wide variety of throws in his arsenal and great hands as well. He once told a friend that he didn’t know how to flick, and then picked up a disc and threw a perfect flick on his first try.

Bryan Feldstein is deceptively quick and athletic, and can catch anything thrown to him, but like Columbo, he isn’t very talkative on the field. This could be because he frequently shows up stoned to games, but this certainly doesn’t hurt his level of play. He is also a soccer player who was extremely talented, but failed to make the cut professionally.

Russell Martin is a more vocal member of the team who really turns up his level of play in games. He has excellent hands and a great flick, and will usually be a leader on the field. However, he has virtually no backhand throw, which makes him a liability in games.

Achmed Rains is a Rastafarian looking man, but don’t let his bloodshot eyes fool you. He is very athletic and fast, and very quick to lose his temper as well. He will frequently question foul calls, and is a declared enemy of the Spirit of the Game. He also throws the disc out of play sometimes, but usually he can be relied on for good hands and rapid movement of the disc.

Bradley O’Connell is a 6’4” ex-lacrosse player with an excellent hammer throw to go along with his near-perfect catching abilities. However, he usually shows up drunk to games, which can hinder his defensive skills a bit, but it seems to improve his play in other areas. He is remembered by his famous play in which he fully laid out to catch a disc with his left hand without spilling a drop of vodka in the Solo cup in his right hand. Sober or not, he will be a factor on the field against any team.

Matthias Gilligan is a short, red-haired man who seems to have boundless energy. He lays out in spectacular fashion, and is always open for a pass. However, his throwing skills are sub-par, and he lacks and effective flick. His cheery attitude off the field keeps the team in good spirits when they suck.

Lucas Tindall is the captain of the team, an odd choice considering how quiet he is off the field. On it, he has great hands, great hustle, and okay throwing ability. He may be the captain only because he is the only person who doesn’t piss anyone else off, but his leadership and skill on the field may suggest otherwise.

Elaine Redstone is the only girl on the team, and is basically a female version of Gilligan. However, she replaces his cheery attitude with a kamikaze approach to catching the disc. She often ends up tackling people as she goes for the disc, and has sustained several head injuries, as well as caused some. She also has an excellent throw when she slows down enough to do so.

Nestor Wegman may be the next captain of the team. He is a team leader with a great skill set. He has a few problems, which include a minor case of tunnel vision on the field, and a sub-par work rate. He uses a thumb flick, which is hard to defend against because with his height it is difficult to reach the disc to block it.

Tyler Brown takes after Rains in his Rastafarian approach to Ultimate, but he is a much calmer person on the field, and possibly more talented. He also suffers the occasional errant throw, but his work rate is better, and he usually is less stoned than Rains at practice.

Kyle Strummler is the only player retained from the original squad, and nobody is sure why he was the one chosen. Maybe it was for the annoying comments off the bench, or the flowing locks of blonde hair? Whatever the reason, Strummler is only a liability on the field, and we mainly serve as a cheerleader for the rest of the team (though he does have a decent flick).

Euan Sands has great stamina and communication skills, but is sort of mediocre when compared with the rest of the players on the field. He worries a bit too much about body hair, and tries to get in the other team’s heads by repeating their names constantly.

NS ULTIMATE CUP II

Donning their traditional cyan-and-yellow on white uniforms, the defending champion TZP squad returns to the Ultimate Cup to defend their crown. A year ago, this team were relative unknowns testing the waters of the international scene. Now, the crop of unlikely victors are trying to assert themselves as a team with a championship identity.

Coach Friedman, now in his 4th year, runs a trademark fast-paced offense that likes to mix it up and spread the field. The defense has taken some hits with the retirement of stalwart defenders Eric Podey and Tyler Evans - the latter, a young talent who emerged as a national star in the past year after the first Ultimate Cup before nagging injuries forced him to leave the game. Additionally, last year's team captain and the identity of TZP Ultimate for the past five years, Tim Hawkins, has struggled since making a return from a freak ACL tear. Word is he's physically up to speed, but hesitates to trust his knee and - in a shocking development - has been left off of this year's roster.

Following the [OOC ;)] lead of our peer nations, TZP Ultimate is fielding a smaller squad this year, going in with 12 players and one reserve.

The Roster
(# - name - height, weight - age)
1-Joe Hiller*+ (5'9,171 - 24)
2-Chester Stanson (5'7,155 - 22)
3-Vondry Brown* (6'4,177 - 28)
4-Calvin Rolle (5'10,170 - 30)
5-Jason Montavo* (6'0,167 - 26)
6-Nick Bell (5'11,169 - 23)
7-Staf Arland* # (5,10,171 - 22)
8-Curt Overton* #+ (5'8,165 - 28)
9-Aaron Hawkins*+ (6'0,172 - 20)
10-Kip Jackson* (6'1,178 - 20)
11-Devon Masters (5'10,175 - 19)
12- Scott Taylor# (6,0,170 - 31)
13 - Michael Reeve+# (5'9, 165 - 17)
* denotes starter
+ denotes team captain
italics denotes handler
grey denotes reserve: TZP will only keep 12 active players at one time. Reserves must stay on the list for at least 4 games.
# denotes new inclusion on this year's roster

spotlight: Aaron Hawkins has a load on his shoulders. After his brother's injury in last year's tournament, he picked up the slack and guided the team to victory through adversity and finished the undefeated run by TZP. But his league play has been up-and-down in the past year, and he'll have to respond to chemistry concerns after some turnover from last year's roster, with the biggest being the omission of his star brother. In Tim Hawkins' place is Curt Overton, as both a starter, handler, and captain, and we'll have to see how Hawkins responds to his inclusion - word on the street is that Aaron's none too pleased. Overton has had an illustrious career but is widely believed to be slowing down. With the elder Hawkins present, there was no question whose team this was. Now, it's anyone's guess.

quotable: "We've yet to lose in Ultimate Cup play? Forget that. We haven't won in this tournament either. We're 0-0, same as everybody else." - Mitch Friedman, head coach

for RPing: no long-term injuries, but short term stuff and character development are OK. I have some plans for some of these characters, but it makes it interesting to find out some things about them from others as well.

TNN Sports

JA: Hello, I'm Jay Albayon, and next to me is Sheila Mailiba. We here at TNN Sports are here to bring you the latest action in Tyrrinian national sports. For those of you who aren't satisfied with the World Cup, there is the Ultimate Cup II, which Tyrrin has taken part in since its inception. The tournament is held at Pacstadiono in the Babbage Islands. This year, we have fielded a strong team of mostly twenty-something Corantians who have been playing Ultimate for most of their lives. Though we don't have a domestic league, the sport is very popular amongst JLT and OTC members, which are two feeder organizations for the Tyrrinian military. While these players are very talented, they are inexperienced when playing competitively, especially on the international level. Sheila, what can we expect out of our team?

SM: Well Jay, they are Tyrrinians, so we know they will try their best when representing their country. Maybe that sounds cliche, but it is true. These are also very talented individuals. Honestly, nobody has seen them play before, so we don't know what to expect, but think of it this way. Every other team will probably have close to the same amount of experience as us, as this tournament is so new.

JA: True, there are few true standout nations thus far. Are there any we should watch out for?

SM: The Zoogie People won the last competition, and they are very talented. They hold legitamate practices and run plays. They even have a coach! Obviously, they take this sport very seriously, and we might pale in comparison. Other than TZP, Sarzonia might also be a tough match. This may just be based off how talented they are at other sports, but if the bring their A game, watch out.

JA: This is true. Sarzonia are ranked third in the world in football. Do we have any standout players to watch out for?

SM: James Steel is an excellent player, and his height gives him a huge advantage. Robert Blake is a very intelligent Ultimate player, and has an excellent throw. Bryan Feldstein could be an X factor, as his quiet nature belies his talent. Mark Columbo is similar, but he has the appearance of a linebacker, so he is tough not to notice.

JA: Thanks for the info, Sheila. Tyrrin has their first game on Monday, up against our traditional rivals, Delaclava. Their team has yet to release a roster, so we don't know what to expect from them. However, we will expect a competitive match, as our matches with Delaclava are always hotly contested, and the winner always goes home with a bit more national pride. They typically best us in tennis, but we have their number in football. How will we fare in Ultimate? Tune in to TNN Sports on Monday, May 24, to find out!

The Babbage Islands' national ultimate team

The team uses an unorthodox numbering scheme. Number π, Snorri Jonsson, described it succinctly: "Our men tend to be irrational, complex, unfathomable. But our women are all prime."

Roster

i Mitch Wilson, 29, Dimensional Warp
0 Henry Farmer, 21, Southern University Buccaneers
√2 Doug Kendall, 18, Babes and Bums
e Scooter Jones, 31, Country Ho-Down
π Snorri Jonsson, 23, Stacked
10100 Ken Newman, 35, Up Up and Away
Arnold Clark, 22, Thomas Aquinas University Golden Angels

2 Katelynn Doll, 15, Babes and Bums
3 Valentine Fulton, 21, McKay College Highlanders
5 Emily Erickson, 40, Spirit of the Game
7 Ashleigh Thomas, 23, What the Huck?
11 Stefani Miller, 24, Stacked
13 Catherine Wilson, 26, Dimensional Warp (captain)
17 Zoe Sheridan, 19, University of Gernsback Titans

Team Manager: Karen Skinner, 38, retired founding captain of Dimensional Warp.

Stories

The national ultimate team is selected by a nine-member committee. Six members are from the Babbage Ultimate Group (BUG), the national governing body for ultimate competitions, and three are from the BCUAA which governs university-level sport. Since all major ultimate competitions in this country are for mixed teams, the national team is half male and half female.

When first reading the history of ultimate in this country, one name stands out above all: Dimensional Warp. The team has played in top-flight competition for 12 years, and has won six of the last eight BUG national titles. In that time, the Warp have known only two captains -- Karen Skinner for seven years and two titles, and Catherine McNichol Wilson for five years and four titles. Catherine and her husband Mitch, who met playing ultimate, are the two players who have been on the Warp's roster for all six titles.

Babes and Bums started out as a brilliant young high school team from Wright, Cayley. Now a bit older and more experienced, they've added some older players and just placed second for the second time in the BUG nationals. Their key threat remains Doug Kendall tossing hucks to his favourite target, lanky 6-foot-3 Katelynn Doll. Katelynn's mom, Emily Erickson, returned to top-level ultimate play when she went back to school to finish a fine arts degree. She captained Spirit of the Game to a national semifinal appearance -- and lost 19-18 to her daughter's squad.

Twenty-one-year-old Valentine Fulton of the McKay College Highlanders may be the best all-round player on the roster. She excels in every aspect of the game, but particularly relishes her role in the hybrid defence when the team is in zone and Valentine goes one-on-one with whoever Catherine has targeted for special attention.

Folks who don't play ultimate may not recognise the punning going on in some of the team names. Ho, huck, and stack are all part of ultimate jargon. Ho is short for horizontal; to "get ho" is to try for a diving catch. Huck is a Hail Mary or bomb to gridiron fans. Stack is the most common offensive formation.

RP Notes

The stories should provide some hints, but feel free to have any player in any role on the pitch. In general, anything goes except long-term injury or serious unsporting conduct. We take the Spirit of the Game seriously.

OOC: Did my game go to overtime? That is how I am RPing it.

TYRRIN NATIONAL NEWS
RIVALRY EXTENDED
Blake Freed

Away from the events surrounding the World Cup, The Tyrrin National Ultimate Team, newly christened "The Flying Stallions", took on the Ultimate team from Delaclava. This match would carry on our rivalry with the latter nation into yet another sport. We have already taken them on in tennis and football. Now we would see who was dominant in a new sports, and quite frankly, one that does not really matter, but we still get bragging rights, right?

The match was very close from the beginning. Our defense was lackluster as the team didn't really know whether to play zone or man. Despite this, our offense ran very well, with great movement off the disc and very few drops. Mark Columbo led our team in the first half with five touchdowns, and Bryan Feldstein had two. Our final point was scored by Bradley O'Connell, despite the drunken state that he was in. Of course, he did provide an itimidation factor with his boistrous shouting and general lack of self-awareness. Assists came from up and down the lineup, with Tindall, Redstone, Broadstreet, and Brown all contributing. Delaclava managed to outscore us in the first half though. They managed to neutralize James Steel with a tall defender of their own, and used the hammer throw to great effectiveness in the first half, which they lead 9-8.

In the second half, we clamped down on their best players, using Columbo and Rains to spy on them and deny any long hucks. Steel was able to get free more, and worked the offense much better in combination with Robert Blake, who was all over the field, and led the team in assists in the second half with six. Tindall and Russell Martin had excellent second halves as well both offensively and defensively, combining for five touchdowns and two assists. We managed to tie the game up at sixteen after regular time was over, so the game went to overtime.

In the overtime period, our Flying Stallions only gave up one deep huck, while completely controlling the rest of play. Our athleticism and stamina showed as we were able to outlast Delaclava into the final moments of overtime. Columbo had a few excellent blocks, while our Blake was able to use his huck to great effectiveness as the Delaclava defense was too tired to get back when either Sands or Tindall would run deep. These two scored our last three points, and we won the match 19-17.

Next up is Toiletdonia, a regional neighbor of ours. They are sure to present a challenge, but after this last high stakes game in Delaclava, the Flying Stallions are confident that they can beat any opponent they face.

[TZP roster]

ZOOGIEDOM 17, VIRABIA 13

The defending champs got off to a slow start in Ultimate Cup play, getting hit in the mouth figuratively and physically. Frustration was evident on the field and from the Zoogiedom Ultimate fans in the stands, with players shouting at each other in a tough and contested first half that saw starter Jason Montavo go down in a heap while marking a Virabian cutter, and ending up with a broken nose.

The Virabians opened a 4-1 lead within minutes of the game's start, and the favorites trudged to a 6-9 halftime deficit. Captains Hawkins and Arland were observed to be shouting venomously at each other as the teams retired to the sidelines for the break.

But the Friedman offense was perhaps one that just needed the right spark to get rolling. Hawkins leapt in the air to snag the opening pull of the second half, then fired off a risky deep huck to a racing Kip Jackson. The team's fastest player caught the disc in the endzone after it fluttered through the fingers of a reaching defender. And just like that, the stumbling, bumbling effort of half 1 turned into the high-flying firepower showcase of half 2.

Virabia wouldn't reach the endzone again until the scoreboard read 14-9. By then, it was a case of too little, too late. A jogging ZU side closed out the game with a slow-paced 3-4 finish, ending the affair at 17-13 while resting Hawkins and the few other starters largely responsible for the 8-0 outburst to start the second half. In a relatively a brief game characterized by dramatic scoring runs, the ending was a lull. Backup handler Nick Bell closed out any hopes of a Virabia comeback with the final two scoring passes, seven minutes apart.

Nonetheless, the spirited Virabia side put up a feisty contest, and the outcome may well have been different but for a furious period of second half domination from the TZP side. As for the victors, it's unclear how they are taking the result. Coach Friedman has kept all players uncharacteristically off-limits for interviews after the game, and you get a sense that this was not at all what was expected. The champs got a wakeup call, for sure, and from a team that's sure to be winning a few more games yet in the brief period of Cup play.

Ah, I'm busy today.

Really briefly then -- it'll be like a CliffNotes or something -

IC

TZP prevails, 17-11

A new day, but the same story.

A flustered TZP squad found themselves in an unexpected battle and fought tooth-and-nail with some feisty challengers to a halftime deficit. But the halftime adjustments prevailed yet again, and once more the Zoogies came out with all guns blazin' to open the second half. Lithatrius, having been emboldened by their 9-8 halftime advantage, were stunned to find themselves on the tail end of an 8-0 run that took all of twelve minutes of play to accomplish. By then it was too late, and Curt Overton finally puts the game away with a soft over-the-shoulders toss to reserve Devon Masters.

Sports commentators have repeated the same sentiment: just what is going on with this Zoogiedom team? "When they're on, they are ON...but I've never seen a team be this hot and cold." exclaimed ZSPN analyst Kate Perry, reporting on the day's events to the home television crowd. "They are just so up and down, in and out, yes and no. What's going on, guys?"

For a second straight game, the normally open coach Friedman slammed the door on post-game interviews. It's a tight ship being run by the TZP side in these Ultimate games...nobody's really sure what to expect next from the defending champs.

Should we slow the schedule a bit to let people catch up?

I would instead encourage people to jump right in where they are at. My marked tendency is to stick with schedules once posted as the fairest thing to do for all participants, emergency excepted. Nobody's out of contention yet, and certainly there aren't many big cumulative RP bonuses out there!

It's unfortunate that the World Cup qualifying got going right as this did, that always sucks up a lot of the available oxygen in the forum.

OOC: okay, that's cool :) yeah, and here's to a good finish by everyone :)

Zoogiedom Ultimate still undefeated in Cup play

As the improbable streak continues, whispers abound - 'when will it end?'

The undefeated champs found themselves in dangerous halftime deficits in their opening two games this year, but won both those games and have turned it well around in the two games after that, handing resounding defeats to the squads of Churchma and Undead Zombie. For the first time since the pre-tournament media week, coach Mitch Friedman has granted an audience with reporters present at the Babbage Island tourney.

Q: Coach, you're halfway through the tournament, and with Tyrrin's loss, one of just two undefeated teams remaining, the other being the Babbage Island hosts. Any comments on the win streak and how long you think it will continue?
A: Well, we really just take this thing one game at a time. We're something like 4-0, but we could well end up with a worse overall record than (0-4) Virabia. It's just a matter of not resting on your laurels, looking at each game as one that should be won, and just forgetting about the standings for the forty or sixty or whatever minutes we're on the field. I think we as a team understand that, and we try to take care of business.

Q: After some scares in the opening rounds, the last two matches haven't even been close. Has the team found its rhythm and is it now making a statement?

A: 4-0 isn't really making a statement, it's a question: are you going to finish 9-0, or 4-5? Throw out everybody's record to date. This tournament is just getting started.

Q: You look at the competitiveness the Virabia squad showed in that first match, and it was really a second half run that allowed the team's endurance to show through. Virabia were expected to be a maybe dark horse candidate after that performance, but they've slid to 0-4. What can we take from your squad's performance against that team?

A: I can't really speak for other teams. Virabia are a talented group, put up a good match on us, and fortunately we were able to put them away.

Q: Pre-Cup, there was a good deal of controversy with Tim Hawkins being a healthy omission from the roster. Any comments on Tim's situation?

A: Tim is obviously a very good player and has been for us for a very long time. He's also young and has a good many years ahead of him still. But it's obviously a very competitive situation with the international cup, and with such a small roster, you'd have to make these personnel decisions sometime.

Q: Who is responsible for making the roster decisions?

A: Obviously there's a lot of input from the [International Athletics Competitions Committee] folk, but that's my call. I make the final calls.

Q: But Tim Hawkins wasn't even mentioned as one of three alternates not included on the roster, is that correct?

A: Correct.

Q: Is this a reflection of the philosophy of the international TZP roster, moving towards younger players? There are a lot of young players on the roster and the alternates were all more unproven prospects, or is this an indication of Tim not coming back fully from his injury? Didn't later reports reveal the ACL tear was a relatively non-flagrant case?

A: Tim's fully back from his injury. Again, it was a personnel call, and I take responsibility for that.

Q: Do you have any comment on the chemistry questions surrounding the team? How is Aaron Hawkins holding up as someone being molded into a team leader, and how have he and his teammates responded to the controversy?

A: There are no chemistry issues within this team.

Q: Coach, what about the shove that Aaron gave fellow captain Curt Overton in the second half of the Churchma game? Or his not-infrequent shouting outbursts that he hasn't ever been known for to date? Hawkins wasn't even a part of the 8-0 run that turned around the Lithatrius game.

A: As I've said before, Aaron was dealing with some ankle issues and was slow to get back from the half break.

Q: Coach, Chester Stanson guaranteed a victory against Delaclava this week. Do you stand by that statement?

A: Absolutely I do not. That's why I don't let my players give pressers. One game at a time.

Q: Just to clarify coach, you do NOT stand by Mr. Stanson's predictions?

A: We'll settle it on the field. Thank you all for your time.

Q: Wait, coach -

A: Thank you.

BREAKING NEWS

Aaron Hawkins has been placed on a 4-game disabled injury list, and TZP has promoted Michael Reeve to the active roster. The move occurred in advance of tonight's match against Delaclava, making the earliest possible return for Hawkins Round 9. Hawkins did not suit up for the game, and Delaclava was notified in a timely manner, but no formal public announcement has been made until now. More to come...
