The Karvian Chronicle

Bollonich defeat Ko-oren in dominating performance; Merritt and Hale shine ahead of Bye

The T20 World Championship was going relatively well for us when we were coming into the game against Ko-oren, the team ranked number one in the world and a team we expected to lose against. We had already won two of our other matches against ranked opponents while losing out to Krytenia. Confidence was high after we had beaten Rundel despite an underwhelming performance from the batting. The bowling which had been lacking in our first two matches had finally come good and started delivering which showed good signs for the upcoming match against Ko-oren. But despite however well we may have been playing, Ko-oren had won their previous two matches including defeating Krytenia on the very first matochday. Any game against them would be extremely challenging to come out on top of especially if we aren’t at our best. Luck would also play an important factor as we were back Folenisa playing at 7 pm local time. The toss could possibly be a defining factor of the match which was to the disappointment to the Bollonischians won by the Ko-orenites. The Ko-orenites chose to bat sending out their openers to do what they do. Ko-orenite batsmen had done great in their previous matches comfortably scoring at least 180 in an innings.
This meant we had to give our best to reduce them to a possible total. Ko-oren started their innings pretty solid scoring some runs as both Lyness and Penn got off to good starts. It looked like Ko-oren were going to put up a huge target with the start they had got. Soon however, Horne picked up the first wicket dismissing Lyness. Horne bowled a nasty bouncer which Lyness attempted to pull but it hit a top edge and went up straight into the air easily being caught by Simmons. Risewell came to the crease and put up a good 2nd wicket partnership of 21 before Penn was clean bowled Foster who picked up her maiden wicket in the World T20 Championship. The next wickets fell just 1 over later as Waterson picked up his 5th and 6th wickets dismissing Risewell and Taylor. Ko-oren had succumbed to a sudden batting collapse as runs were scarce. And by the end of the 20 overs they had only managed to score 153. This was a total that the Bollonischians could comfortably chase but underestimating their bowlers would be something we couldn’t do and neither could we do what had happened to Rundel in the last match. We had to make sure we played well, and converted this good bowling performance into a win.
Simmons and Merritt got off to a comfortable and steady start scoring at a high pace. The power play had almost been weathered without losing any wickets which is exactly when we lost a wicket in the 6th over as Simmons was caught behind. Haggard came out who had something to prove after his underwhelming performance in the last game. Haggard however was again unable to impress as he only scored 7 off 9 balls before getting caught out when he tried to lift the immense amount on pressure on him. Bollonich were in a somewhat all right position but losing more wickets could turn out to be disastrous as Hale walked into to bat. Hale needed to provide runs and and be solid for Bollonich. Hale delivered scoring a magnificent 50 and put up a brilliant partnership with Merritt. However, just before finishing the game Merrit got dismissed meaning Abraham had to come on as Hale finished the game with a boundary winning Bollonich a crucial game.
This win would be crucial going into a rest matochday for our players. After facing Ko-oren it concludes all our matches against ranked opposition meaning we only have Quebec & Shingoryeo and Vilita & Turori two unranked teams in our next two match days providing us with a very good opportunity to qualify with a good group position.

The Annasholm Sentinel

In a prompt chase, Rundel needed merely 17.2 overs to outstrip Quebec and Shingoryeo's 159 runs; a six from Zhobie Bostwa put the finishing touches on our innings, and ensured that fans could make it home from the 13:00 start in time for tea. "Really, I don't see what all the fuss was about," disclaimed Klar Vurno. "No matter when you start, or whether you build in formal breaks or not, it's always a good time for tea."

Flark Balgula, the closest thing the nation musters to a pure pace bowler, had a fine performance, dismissing Sarah McKinson after a mere seven balls and catching Joe-Mason Chomedey's for a second wicket. "It's a bit different playing on a pitch that's clearly used to long-form games," said Balgula. "But I would be a miserable and woeful wretch if I assumed that our homeland's provincial tendencies were shared by other nations."

Match report posted on the GruenCric website.

Gruenberg win despite van der Zee fireworks

Do you have a ‘type’? Leggy blondes, perhaps? Chunky goth chicks? Nerdy redheads with glasses? In Gruenberg’s case, their ‘type’ is clearly emerging at the GCF World T20: an early collapse as the openers fail, a stylish but insubstantial cameo from Ettexinor Broimbles, a patient rebuild from Chthchibvuel Thchthaarheq as the middle order wilts around him, and some Brigveger Grovan spark at the end. The familiar scenes played out yet again, this time against Darmen: once more, they failed to make much use of the powerplay, with captain Funvorgius Ventreltraxibung’s struggles continuing as he flashed his first ball straight ball behind, and Nurples Honk doing little to justify his recall, gloving a pull behind on 9. Broimbles’s 32 off 21 was attractive, fluent, and over far too quickly. And then Thchthaarheq once more put the team on his back, with his third successive fifty, before Grovan biffed a quickfire 15.

The difference this time was he had an effective partner in Hraff’ Tumcoweiss. Recalled after Jett Tyrkkekkekklukkekklukekk’s expensive showing against The Grearish Union, Tumcoweiss reminded everyone of his batting talent with a pugnacious unbeaten 50 as he and Thchthaarheq added 80. Like most teams playing at Orean, Darmen had gone seam-heavy – their token spinner, Dorian Myers, was clattered for 50 off his 4 overs – but Tumcoweiss took on the short ball aggressively. He made great use of the late dab, running everything outside off stump down to fourth man* for easy runs; when the seamers drifted onto his pads he showcased some exquisite pick-ups. 192 was the best total Gruenberg have posted in the format.

Yet Darmen came out firing in response, through Wilfred van der Zee, who launched an astonishing assault on the Gruenberger attack. Ventreltraxibung opened with double spin, and Tumcoweiss and Broimbles sent down economical first overs, and Tumcoweiss’s second had Vinnie Acker play around an arm ball, but then he moved to seam, hoping It’s… Keitocronkidrex could nibble off the surface. Instead it was van der Zee who nibbled, or rather, took great shark-like bites. He smashed 15 off Keitocronkidrex’s first over, and 30 off his second. Six after six peppered the Orean stands as Darmen’s most goat-enabled batter threatened to chase down the total single-handed. Even Quouodan Skejjibox, hitherto Gruenberg’s number one spinner, was not safe, going for back-to-back sixes.

Sigmund Winter added 84 (contributing just 18 himself) with van der Zee before Tumcoweiss returned and caught the outside edge with one that turned sharply across him. Skejjibox repeated the trick to Theudofrid Milligan with an other one that broke away and grazed the edge for an even better catch by Ystipug Contemnible. But Skejjibox’s greatest contribution came next over. Darmen had added 119 off the first ten, needing only 74 off the remaining ten, and van der Zee looked set to do it in half that, until he hit a rocket to Skejjibox on the boundary. Not a notably strong fielder, the spinner was surprised as anyone to find himself leaping to catch it one handed. The end of van der Zee’s astonishing knock transformed the chase. Scenting blood, Transportflowmap Renkauer ripped out the middle order with a fiery spell that took the placid pitch out of the equation with searing yorkers.

Gruenberg’s 15 run win leaves them in a strong position heading into the back half of the group stage, but facing ongoing concerns over their top order batting as Ventreltraxibung struggles to justify his place. Zambuimmi Hengtridan Jr.’s indifferent form is a worry, and despite fluent starts even Broimbles has failed to repeat his dominating run scoring of previous tournaments. For now, Gruenberg has a ‘type’. Grovan’s batting, meanwhile, has outshone his bowling, and with Keitocronkidrex’s demolition here, the first hints of a “20 overs of spin” approach reared their head. But that would be risky in the dewy afternoon and evening games. For now, the hope will be Thchthaarheq and Renkauer can continue their sensational form – and find enough willing partners to scratch through to the knockouts.
* In Gruenberg, third man is known as fourth man. Whether this is to allow extra space for the Sultan, or just a case of being extra, is unclear.

OREAN (UPA)—Seth Cameron’s stunning catch to dismiss Eldridge Surprenant was the “game changer” in Uncertainty’s 5 wicket win over The Grearish Union at Orean, says team coach driver Peter Ballard. Ballard praised Cameron’s fielding, which saw him take a catch-of-the-tournament return grab off Shirely Hershey, only to outdo himself off Vusumuzi Mntimande’s bowling. The catch, a sprawling, two-part effort at fine leg that saw him dive over the boundary hoardings and palm up the ball inches from the ground, then leap back into play and dive full length with knuckles grazing the ground to cling on, dismissed the most dangerous Grearian player, Surprenant, after which their innings struggled despite the docile Orean pitch.

Cameron’s muscular all-round effort included a quality spell of seam bowling, finishing with 1-24 off his 4 overs, and hitting the winning runs, a towering six lost in the floodlights after called on to bat unexpectedly after Schalk de Villiers collapsed having rolled his ankle setting off for a single. De Villiers is expected to miss the next game but further news on his prognosis will await medical tests. “If it’s just a sprain there’s a chance he’ll be back,” said a hopeful Ballard. “If there’s some ligament damage, then that could be his tournament done.” It’s a devastating injury for a promising young talent who’s burst into the side this tournament.

The Grearish Union set a total of 156, which was never enough on a fairly easy batting surface. Captain Taylor Kincheloe top scored with 41, run out in a confusing mix-up that involved two batters ending up at one end while Naseem Latif took three attempts at breaking the stumps at the other following Mukesh Abhijeet’s needlessly wild throw. Latif nonetheless bowled well, out of his usual middle overs role and instead taking the new ball as Jack Harper aimed to get some spin in before the heavy dew settled; Abhijeet struggled with his grip and was expensive. Bowling fast and tight, Latif’s economical opening spell set the tone for a disciplined performance.

Ariana Cooper had earlier made history as the first woman to represent Uncertainty in international cricket. She opened the innings, replacing vice-captain Thehan Gunewardena, and saw her domestic opening partner for Bolaño, Mike Griffin, continue his rotten form with a golden duck. But she played a steady hand, guiding the chase calmly and supporting Tom James, who played his first substantial innings for the side, smiting a brutally efffective 51 off 35. James was dropped twice and survived an LBW decision overturned on review, but welcomed pace onto the bat and swung hard. The two added 86, the highest partnership of the tournament to date for Uncertainty, though neither could quite see the chase through. Latif, de Villiers and Cameron finished things off untroubled.

de Villiers’s absence from the next game will force a selection change, probably demanding a recall for Gunewardena. Shahbaz Bahawalanzai looks set to replace the out-of-form Griffin. There will also be a debut for Thilakaratne Silva.

The Karvian Chronicle

The Bollonischians have a good rest ahead of the game against Quebec and Shingoryeo; Krytenia takes group lead

We had defeated Ko-oren in a dominating performance which show both the batting and bowling parts of our team shine. Following the game we had a rest day meaning the players would be able to catch a much needed break before we again went out on the field to complete our last two matches against two unranked teams in Quebec & Shingoryeo and Vilita and Turori. Following the 3 wins in our first 4 games we are currently positioned in 2nd place with 6 points ahead on head to head against Ko-oren. The format of the tournament is such that it means the top 2 from each group directly make it to the Round of 16 while the 3rd and 4th placed teams along with the two best 5th placed teams have to play in the play in round. Bollonich would aim to be clear of having to play in the play in and directly qualify. To successfully achieve this we would have to win our next two games to be completely safe from Ko-oren overtaking us as we had lost our game to Krytenia. Krytenia also having played 5 games sit comfortably at 8 points have a bye following which they will come against Rundel. Since we lost to Krytenia they lead us on head to head, and we would need to have more points to make it through as group winners and advance which would require Krytenia to lose to Rundel. Rundel currently sit on 4th position with 4 points form 4 games with them facing Lisander and Alice Bay along with Krytenia in the following matches. Currently as things look Bollonich have a healthy chance to make it through as top 2 especially following are victory against Ko-oren. However this isn’t the time to get complacent and already celebrate an ongoing war. We shall need to give it our all on the pitch if we wish to go far in this tournament. Krytenia meanwhile on Matchday 5 snagged their 4th win essentially moving to the top of Group A with 8 points.

In Group B, Damkuni continued their perfect streak as they closely defeated Fodhla who currently sit at 4th place with 4 points. Damkuni meanwhile is the third team to reach 8 points in the entire tournament along with the Krytenians in our group themselves. The Plough Islands find themselves in a rough spot registering only 6 points from their five games which is frankly way below the quality we have come to expect from them being the 5th ranked side. They lost their latest game to rivals and opponents Barunia in what was a thrilling encounter as the Barunians emerged victorious with only one ball remaining. Damkuni’s domination whether it will continue or not remains something to be seen.
In Group C, Gruenberg continued their good run winning the third game from their 4 matches beating West Pheonicia as Darmen also is tied on points with Gruenberg, however having played an extra game. Garbelia won their 2nd game having beaten New Jacobland as Group C remains increasingly closely contested.
Group D is the group containing the hosts Liventia themselves and also Ethane and Baggieland out of which the former had been defeated in the Even Frostier Cup by our very own national football team. Group D sees 4 teams on 6 points, namely Liventia, Ethane, Baggieland and Eastfield Lodge which makes Group D the group to potentially watch out for as the final 2 match days can be make or break for the teams.
In Group E, we have our long time rivals Sylestone against whom we’ve seen showdown in almost every sport we have taken part in. They were part of our World Cup Qualifying group in football and our group in the World Lacrosse Championship. This long time rivalry is something that hasn’t been ignited in cricket yet, and has the possibility of not being at all as Sylestone is currently poised in a tricky situation in Group E sitting at 4th with only 4 points. Pratapgadh and Dryicor meanwhile sit at 6 points while playing the same amount of games. The group leader is however Elejamie who have won all 4 of their 4 games being the only team other than Damukuni to achieve this marvellous feat.

The Annasholm Sentinel

Despite the admirably stoic efforts of the Vilita and Turori side, Rundel built up a heavy lead in the first innings and were able to successfully defend it. "Batsman 6, who is also Bowler 6, epitomized the role of the all-rounder, I thought," said Klende Wresta.

"It is true that nobody enjoys pain for its own sake!" mused Foheb Mauk, of the Skurgway, referring to the SAFE team's famous lorem ipsum motto. "But just as toil and exertion can hone the skills of a cricket player or even a bell toller, so too can spiritual suffering give way to enlightenment and release. Hahahaha just kidding there's no release, only suffering. You're so gullible sometimes."

Dryicor Stun Pratapgadh, Where Does Pratapgadh Stand Now?
Written By Rajeev Chauhan
Cricket

Pratapgadh has finally lost their first match in the GCF World Twenty20 Championship XIV, but it's not against Elejamie. The unranked team of Dryicor stun Pratapgadh after chasing 173 runs to win the game in 19.4 overs. Dryicor's performance sort of reminded fans of the early days of Pratapgadh in international cricket and the spirit the team had. Dryicor's hard-earned win against the Men In Red & Gold has resulted in Dryicor earning second place while Pratapgadh has dropped to third place, both teams are tied on 6 points. So where does Pratapgadh stand now after their first defeat? We will talk about that, but first, let's talk about the Dryicor match.

Farhang Gondalwala won the toss for Pratapgadh and as always chose to bat first. Bholanath Dhanuka and Divaj Dharel arrived at the pitch fully determined. Both men played hard and built a huge partnership of 72 off 52 balls that gave Pratapgadh an early advantage. On the fourth ball of the ninth over, Dhanuka was caught at deep midfield and his innings ended on 43 runs off 31 balls, just seven runs off from a half-century. Bholanath Dhanuka put on a great show for the fans and seems like he could possibly replace Parte when he retires. Pratapgadh's huge population and love for cricket give the Pratapgadh Cricket Federation a huge talent pool to pick players from. While Dhanuka sadly had to go back to the pavilion without a half-century, Jitendra Patil arrived at the pitch. Patil failed to impress in the first two T20Is he played against Hebitaka, but his brilliant performance in the ODI series gave him the opportunity to play today. However, Patil yet again failed to impress in this format as he goes back to the pavilion scoring 15 runs off 11 balls. A beautiful googly from a Dryicoran spinner completely deceives Patil and nicks his bails off. A lot fans assumed that he would be the best T20 player in the team due to his performances in the first season of the Super Smash League, but that's not the case here. Patil seems to be more suited for the one-day and four/five-day format than twenty-twenty cricket. That aside, now it was time for the skipper to turn things around for his team. Farhang Gondalwala formed a partnership with Dharel that lasted for the rest of the match. Gondalwala and Dharel together 63 runs off 41 balls, two runs coming for extras. Dharel also made a brilliant half-century of 80 runs off 60 balls and remained not out, making him the closest Pratapgadhi to score a century in this format. Rathore was the previous closest Pratapgadh to score a century in this format, scoring 75 runs off 41 balls and remained not out against Sajnur in the first T20I of the two-match series. Pratapgadh's innings ended on 172 for the loss of two wickets from twenty overs and it seemed like it was going to be a one-sided match.

It was Dryicor's time with the bat and the fans were excited to see what this unranked team was going to bring to the table. Kakadia, as always, bowled the first over. Just three balls into the game and Kakadia sent the Dryicoran opener Magnus Walston back to the pavilion after Kakadia took out his middle stump. Already, the Dryicorans were in danger. Dryicoran batsmen got a few more runs in between the first and fourth over, however, another wicket fell in the fourth over at the hands of Parghat Singh Kahlon, or Kali as people call him. Wickets fell regularly in the first ten overs, including Kali's second wicket in the eight over and Chauhan's wicket in the tenth over. However, the Dryicorans didn't lose hope and kept piling up runs. After ten overs, Dryicor was on 77 for the loss of four wickets. However, the game completely changed in the next ten overs. Expensive overs from returning Sandha Ghalo, Sukhwinder Chinna and Savir Sanghavir gave the Dryicorans a chance at beating the 12th best team in the world. By the time it came to the last three overs of the match, Dryicor was on 148 for the loss of four wickets and just needed 25 runs off 18 balls to win the game. This put Chauhan, Kali and Kakadia under a lot of pressure, but they did their best against the batsman on fire. While Chauhan conceded twelve runs in the eighteenth over, Kali only conceded seven runs in the nineteenth over. Kali also managed to take a wicket, but the damage had been done. Dryicor just six runs from the last over and Kakadia stepped up to challenge. He even took a wicket in the last over, but a boundary on the fourth ball of the over ended the game in Dryicoran victory. The Pratapgadhi fans were visibly shocked and depressed after what could have been an easy win.

Farhang Gondalwala just congratulated Dryicor in his press conference for their impressive batting performance and wish them luck for the future. He said, "Dryicor have been amazing tonight, they have the spirit to become a force in cricket and stand up against the top teams. This could have been an easy win for us but our inexperienced spin unit failed to deliver today and we were short of runs. Best of luck to the Dryicorans for their future matches."

So where does Pratapgadh stand now? Well, they only expected to lose against Elejamie. However, after a surprise loss to Dryicor, Pratapgadh have to defeat Elejamie if they wish to qualify straight into the Round of 16 and avoid the Play-in round. Pratapgadh are just behind Dryicor, with both teams tied on 6 points. Pratapgadh will be playing Arjunnagar, Sylestone will be playing Dryicor and Hebitaka will face Elejamie. In an ideal situation, Pratapgadh gets an easy win over Arjunnagar, Sylestone defeat Dryicor and Hebitaka overcome Elejamie to put Pratapgadh in a good position. However, things don't always go your way. So let's see what happens next, as always rally around Pratapgadh.

Starblaydia 158/5 (20 overs)
Pratapgadh 200/5 (20 overs)

Looking for a back-to-back with another inexperienced XI

All the scorecard artists (scorecartists) have come out with some stunning interplay of numbers and more numbers, so you know what time it is: the T20 World Cup is back on. Drawn into a group with Anaian veterans and rivals, as well as a few surprises - that is, it's a surprise they play cricket, we know them from other tournaments - and two teams that might not spark any feelings yet but that might change sooner than you think. We'll leave it to you to match our group stage opponents to these descriptions*. And a very young Dragonflies XI is here to teach all six group stage opponents a lesson. And much like last tournament: despite the average age, there's always a chance at a title.

Anaia's "Cricket Triangle" of Ko-oren, the Plough Islands, and Krytenia enter the tournament ranked first, fifth, and tenth, respectively, which means there might be all-Anaian (re-)matches later in the tournament - but at least we're guaranteed of the inter-K derby of Krytenia and Ko-oren. Also interesting to note: all three nations are balanced whatever format they play, but each gravitates to a different format. The Plough Islands, following the slow and leisurely pace of the islands themselves, are the Test cricket buffs (it's damn near the only thing they even want to play, though "any cricket is still cricket" so the Plough Islanders show up to the other formats anyway). Krytenia are the ODI experts, with their talent for making ODI World Trophy finals only rivaled by their talent to lose ODI World Trophy finals. Ko-oren are the T20 aces, having won the T20 World Championships twice, and rightfully described by Plough Islanders and Krytenians alike as "a bunch of lucky hacks".

On match day one, it was Cyan versus Green-and-blue.
Ko-oren 180/4 (20 overs)
Krytenia 156/6 (20 overs)
Ko-oren win by 24 runs

Excellent batting early on gave the Dragonflies an easily defendable total, with the new opening duo of Lyness and Penn going for 11. While most of the batsmen were patient, the young guys occasionally tried to play shots that just weren't there, with Lyness (4 (3)) testament to that, reaching well past off-stump to nick a ball right into the only slip on the field. Penn and Letchford combined for a lovely partnership of 57 that really put the Krytenians with their backs against the wall, with Penn ultimately caught out in the outfield (70 (56)). The damage had been done, and it was up to the bowlers to keep Krytenia under 180. They did, via an excellent Hooligan that just couldn't be read by the batsmen, getting two wickets but his biggest contribution probably was the sheer amount of near-wickets, tense moments, and barely playable deliveries. Fielding was great as well, directed by the same Hooligan. All in all, the Cyan team could have probably gotten a little bit more out of this but even their last-ditch efforts (starting in the 17th over) couldn't find enough boundaries to get the 181 in view.

The second match had us play relative unknowns Rundel.
Rundel 178/4 (20 overs)
Ko-oren 181/4 (18.1 overs)
Ko-oren win by six wickets

Hooligan missed his magic touch, couldn't get the details right on the fielding, and it showed: Rundel scored plenty of runs on a bat-friendly Folenisa track. It wasn't exactly like the dry East Surbourneshire pitches that are renowned for their high totals, but it certainly wasn't like Orean's balanced pitch where Ko-oren found the boundary so easily a few days before - but otherwise wasn't all that bat-friendly. Ko-oren couldn't get pressure, and Rundel got themselves out of tough spots quite easily, for a target of 179. Exactly how possible the target was, showed after three overs when 28 runs were scored on the 18 deliveries (and two extras). Lyness was given another chance, and composed himself fairly well, but it was Penn who again saved the innings before it got well and truly under way with 53 runs. Risewell had a much better day, adding 26, with Letchford and Hunniford doing their part as well. yMwffrael, not having batted this tournament at all, used his spare energy on bowling instead - we thought this team was deep at batting, but the bowling is at least equally good.

Perhaps strangest about the Rundel match were the questions by the press after the fact: the Ko-orenite press were over the moon asking about "hey how likely is it we can pull a back-to-back title thing?" but the Rundler press just didn't stop going on about "are you really named Hooligan?" "Mitchell, good game, how did you avoid giving up runs Left enRight?"

The third round had us contemplate our relative lack of mistakes so far: the bye day was as early as it was unnecessary - but that's the schedule. At least we have the opportunity to control our own destiny on the last day because we actually play, when Quebec & Shingoryeo have to sit out and hope that the other three results won't mess up their plans too much.

Round four (and match three) saw us face Bollonich, who took the T20 scene by storm and wanted to let everybody know what's up.
Ko-oren 153/4 (20 overs)
Bollonich 157/3 (15.5 overs)
Bollonich win by 7 wickets

A hot evening, two tired sides, and runs that weren't really on offer: Folenisa not only limited Rundel and Quebec to about 160 runs each earlier on the day, but also did a number on the late match. It didn't help that Lyness went back to playing shots that weren't there (although how he lost his wicket could be just bad luck, maybe). For the rest, it was all caution for both teams as the Dragonflies again didn't have to let anybody below 6th bat - yMwffrael still waiting for this first batting appearance despite the pre-tournament hype - but the top 3-4 (with the exception of Lyness) are just that good at picking shots. In the end, it was a disappointing loss with Bollonich getting to the target in record time with plenty of wickets in hand - Hale and Merritt scoring 119 runs between them, icing the match pretty much then and there.

Round five was an intermezzo for us but probably the biggest thing on the calendar for our opponents, Quebec & Shingoryeo.
Quebec and Shingoryeo 164/4 (20 overs)
Ko-oren 167/7 (18.5 overs)
Ko-oren win by 3 wickets

Back to winning ways: that was the entire plan for this match. The opening three fixtures saw Ko-oren bat conservatively and never really having to do much more than that, but the shock loss to Bollonich awakened something. Lyness was pulled for Twaddle, yRheighewn played instead of Taylor, all to bolster the batting a bit more. The latter especially could score runs when there's nothing on offer, but it's Penn and Twaddle that can make magic happen - as long as they don't go out early. And so far, we've been lucky with that. Thrall and yPipaem had a hard time denying the Quebecois, and Enright was the only one to pick up some wickets (LBW, LBW, caught behind), but that still paved the way for a target of 165. Kayondo and Woodley-Barnes partnered up for a good chunk of it, but the contributions of all 6 batsmen were necessary. Finch, Sang-Soon, and Chomedey are among them, but they gave up their wickets in comical ways, giving hope to the Green and Blue. In the second half, batsmen seemed to operate on a 'get to 20 runs, get out' basis. Twaddle paired up with Penn, Risewell, Letchford, and Taylor until he himself went out well into the 9th over, at 89 (75). In the meantime, most of the target was completed, but Ko-oren did have to dig deep into the lineup: yMwffrael took over after two turbulent overs of dot balls and wicket scares, taking the team to 167 with Enright and Thrall.

In the evening game at the Orean Central Oval, New Jacobland's captain Ben Clark won the toss, and elected to bat. The pitch was a completely flat track, but a tiny bit of cloud cover in the night sky would make it a competitive match.

As usual, Mog and Skritkyposs opened the bowling. The first over from Mog was a beautiful piece of cricket, with the young seamer finding a tiny bit of late swing, but being masterfully played by the excellent D. Cook. It was an excellent example of how to rotate the strike, including an eyecatching drive through cover to find the boundary. Skritkyposs' over was entirely faced by Taylor, with the opener using the quick's pace to pick up a boundary. Then, Mog struck; following three inswingers with one that went away slightly, and Cook couldn't resist a waft, with Kawauso making the catch easily. The following over, Skritkyposs let loose a classic 95 MPH+ delivery to shatter Taylor's off stump. Despite playing well, the opener's dismissals suggested that Clark made the wrong call. This idea was even more debated when the following over saw first-change bowler Kawa dismiss him for a duck, finding an inside edge to the keeper. Cooper offered solidarity, but after 21 balls, went for a massive shot off a Greet Dreessotter slower ball, finding the fingers of Romeijnders. Martin and Cahier, two traditionally big hitters, came in after a collapse, so had to adapt their natural game. It was a perfect mix of punishing bad balls and risk-free strike rotation, a classic example of how to rebuild an innings. Unfortunately, with 50 nearing, Martin could not resist a return to old habits, caught at square leg after trying to whack Kawa for six. In the very same over, Cahier went for a big shot, but chopped on to leg stump. New Jacobland were in trouble, and falling behind the run rate. Skritkyposs and Dreessotter did for Parker and Jensen, then part-timer/all-rounder Altink, with his first bowl of the tournament, had Johnson out at short leg. Kawauso injured their thumb with a dropped catch near the end, and was replaced by De Ven for the remainder of New Jacobland's innings, and was demoted down the order for the batting innings.
Image
Romeijnders and Hiramew walked out looking in good form. Inspired by other teams' success, New Jacobland opened the bowling with Refari, in order to exploit Romeijnders' weakness. She played the first ball with a straight bat out to midwicket, and picked up a single. Hiramew hit a one-bounce four down the ground, followed by a single. Romeijnders returned the favour. Hiramew's eyes lit up at the next ball, a juicy long-hop. It was smacked high into the air... and came down straight into Taylor's hands. The Otters fell silent. New Jacobland cheered in ecstasy. It took several minutes for Ottaa to arrive at the crease, having not been properly padded up in time. Romeijnders took the strike. Blocked. Single. Single. Blocked. The next ball was much quicker from Brett Cook, but also less accurate. Romeijnders tucked it off her hips for four. Then Cook let one fly that was slower, but also on her legs. Her eyes lit up, but the slog sweep was edged straight to square leg. Two down. A rebuild needed. Ottaa played slowly, accumulating and letting Altink have the strike. Neither of them were in any form, but together they were a perfect partnership, and they put on a hundred together, before Altink fell to Jensen attempting a ramp that was never quite there. Otto, however, was on hand to close the game, and with plenty of time left, they played slowly, with singles to pile up pressure, then fours when the bowlers got tired. In the end, they made a comfortable victory, showing that form can come from nowhere.

(Just realised I forgot some of my team were bowlers when they should have been bowling a fair chunk of overs. I will be phasing them back in slowly, for now just ignore that Otto hasn't bowled yet)

Match report posted on the GruenCric website.

Tumcoweiss continues to impress in comfortable win

Gruenberg overcame West Phoenicia by 4 wickets in a relatively straightforward victory, with recalled spinner Hraff’ Tumcoweiss thumping an unbeaten 44 to follow his 1-20 off 4 overs with the ball. Regular wickets dampened the scale of Gruenberg’s win on the scorecard but they looked in little trouble chasing down a sub-par 158 with 11 balls to spare. While Gruenberg’s seamers were once again expensive, tight bowling from spinners Tumcoweiss and Quouodan Skejjibox, who took 2-35, kept West Phoenicia to 157 in an oddly restrained performance on the flat wicket. If the Orean surface has proved anything, it is that scores of 160 are not enough batting first, and Gruenberg’s chase demonstrated that once again.

Captain Jack Tennessee, who has possibly the coolest name in all of international cricket (saving, of course, Eightyseven Otterbiscuits), was the only Phoenician batter to really attack the innings with purpose, but he was well caught on the boundary by Zambuimmi Hengtridan Jr. Hasaga Kain finished unbeaten on 50 but could be faulted for not accelerating more from a promising platform. The recalled iiPiqup Fizbin was the pick of the Gruenberger seamers.

In response, Gruenberg’s chase benefited from a changed opening partnership, as captain Funvorgius Ventreltraxibung dropped himself to 3. Hengtridan Jr., whose form has been a disappointment so far, looked more comfortable in the opening role, hitting a brisk 23 as Gruenberg took 67 off the powerplay, by far their best start to date. Nurples Honk smashed 25 off 12 before attempting a suicidal single. Ventreltraxibung still struggled to find his timing and skied an easy catch, while Ettexinor Broimbles convened a second meeting of the Awful Gruenberger Running Club. But Tumcoweiss swung freely and the total was too small to defend.

OREAN (UPA)—Coach driver Peter Ballard said that Uncertainty “threw away” a potential win against an experienced Darmeni side. Set a daunting 184, the Uncertain batters seemed to lack the necessary sense of urgency, with a conservative 71 run opening stand consuming over 9 overs and forcing the middle order into rash strokes. Naseem Latif, promoted to open for the first time in international cricket, produced a 64 that was both attractive and far too slow paced, while Thehan Gunewardena’s wretched form continued with a painful 25 off 28 that totally wasted the powerplay opportunities. When Gunewardena was eventually stumped, Jack Harper tried to catch up in one and was quickly LBW, leaving Tom James and Jamarcus Pettygrove to hit out, which they did briefly but ultimately in vain.

The early game, free of dew, offered Uncertainty a chance to load up on spinners, playing both all-rounders, plus giving a debut to Thilakaratne Silva alongside mainstay Mukesh Abhijeet. Indeed, captain Harper could be faulted for not bowling his spinners more: his seamers disappeared at over 10 an over while Abhijeet, who has been economical all tournament, failed to bowl out. Darmen’s innings was led by captain Sigmund Winter, who finished unbeaten on 75, while the most exciting innings came from Kenny O’Callaghan, who smashed 48 off 26 and was unlucky to finish 2 short of a half-century after Quebecois third umpire Etienne Wright downgraded his final ball 6 to 4. Silva took 2-27 on debut, including the wicket of Darmeni batting star Winston van der Zee, who not only misread a doosra but even more embarrassingly is called Winston.

Darmen had stuck with a seam-heavy attack, led by Corwin McAlister. Kieran Rosenfeld bowled a nerveless final over: needing 18, Uncertainty could manage only half that as Silva and fellow debutant Shahbaz Bahawalanzai failed to find the ropes. It was a frustrating missed opportunity for what could have been a “very big win”, according to coach driver. More changes are expected: with Silva and Abhijeet both impressing, and Latif comfortable in his new ball role, there seems little need for Gunewardena. Pettygrove may be given a chance to open, his preferred domestic role. Schalk de Villiers is still out, but, encouragingly, has not been sent home, giving hope he may be fit for the final group stage game.
