Pro Wrestling Panja, or PWP, is a professional wrestling promotion hailing from the Rajput Kingdom of Pratapgadh. It is currently owned by Panja Entertainment Ltd and the current chairman and CEO is Navneet Phogat. Pro Wrestling Panja is the oldest professional wrestling promotion in Pratapgadh, dating back to 1980 when it was known as Pro Wrestling Punjab. It currently has a working agreement with Valiant Championship Wrestling and has had many working agreements with countless promotions such as Men Of Heart Wrestling, Golden Sun Wrestling, and now-defunct Royal Championship Wrestling. It was once the most popular wrestling promotion in Pratapgadh but started to decline in the 2000s as Pratapgadh began its modernization process. The promotion is known for promoting 'true wrestling' and accomodating and promoting many styles such as 'pehlwaani' (Indian Wrestling), 'kalaripayatu' (an Indian martial art originating from Kerala) and various Indian combat arts.

Navneet Phogat has kickstarted his plan to bring back the glory days of PWP by founding Panja Entertainment Ltd in 2020 and purchasing Pro Wrestling Punjab from his father, Mahaveer Phogat, in the same year. Navneet Phogat changed the promotion's name to 'Pro Wrestling Panja' as he wishes to expand the promotion's border and hold shows all over Pratapgadh.

Pro Wrestling Panja believes that professional wrestling is an art that attracts people from all kinds of backgrounds. Pro Wrestling Panja wishes to promote the Indian style of professional wrestling and attract fans from all over the multiverse. Pro Wrestling Punjab promises that its shows will have a more sports-based presentation, displaying professional wrestling as a real sport. This makes the promotion far more unique compared to various other promotions in Pratapgadh who are all about blood and guts.

The Man Himself
Mahaveer Pahogat was born on 1st July 1959 in Tilprastha, Eastern Punjab. He was the son of a locally famous Pehlwaan, Eshwar Phogat, who wanted Mahaveer to be a Pehlwaan just like him. That's exactly what happened when Mahaveer turned 14 and began his training as a Pehlwaan under the guidance of his father and another local Pehlwaan, Sair Fareedi. By the age of 17, he became a proficient Pehlwaan and competed in both regional and national level championships. He was also academically gifted, acing subjects such as maths, physical education, and physics.

He was 18 years old when he was first exposed to the theatrical drama of professional wrestling when he first met a professional wrestler from Britain. Professional wrestling was looked down upon by the locals, including his father Eshwar Phogat, and his other trainer Sair Fareedi. However, Mahaveer was fascinated by the idea of professional wrestling and learned about it for the next few years from many British wrestlers. One British professional wrestler, in particular, taught Mahaveer the art of professional wrestling. That man was Harry Smith, who is considered the man who gave birth to Pro Wrestling Panja as Mahaveer got the idea of starting his own promotion. However, due to his father's resentment towards 'fake' wrestling, he had to hold on to his idea for a few more years.

When he was 19 years old, his father found out about Mahaveer's pro wrestling training sessions and kicked him out of the house. The locals of his village were also 'disappointed by him and turned their back. Heartbroken, he moved to the city of Jaipur in the state of Rajputana. There he met other Pratapgadhi professional wrestlers who were abandoned and were looking for a new home. With the help of Harry Smith, Mahaveer and his fellow wrestlers held a minor event in the annual Jaipur Mela (Jaipur Carnival) of 1978. The locals were confused but decided to watch the show anyway. They were quick to find out it was staged but were entertained by the performance of Mahaveer Phogat and Vijay Singhvi. The crowd applauded and loved the show, knowing it was staged. It's the performance and a bit of realism it had that surprised the crowd. Mahaveer and his fellow companions quickly became quite famous in Jaipur and started to hold shows every two months. In 1979, Harry Smith passed away at the age of 64 due to heart failure. This devastated Mahaveer, but he was resilient enough to get back up and keep moving forward.

He established Pro Wrestling Punjab in 1980 when he returned to Eastern Punjab and resided in Gurugram. He knew that he needed to implement some Indian style to his wrestling promotion. Pehlwaani (Mud Wrestling), kabaddi, and other local sports had a huge influence on the promotion's wrestling style which grabbed the attention of the Pratapgadhi audience. His father publically condemned him and refused to allow him into the village, which had a huge impact on Mahaveer's mental health. With the help of his fellow companions and newly married wife Ekta Phogat, he went on to give rise to one of the biggest pro wrestling promotions of Pratapgadh.

PWP's Rise
When he first started Pro Wrestling Punjab in 1980, his goal was to increase the presence of professional wrestling in the state of Punjab (now known as East Punjab). This would create a proper audience for PWP house shows and they started making some profits in the start of 1981. Looking at the great potential of this new market, the Bank of Punjab backed up this promotion and Mahaveer Phogat had more financial power than ever before. Pro Wrestling Punjab entering its third year in 1982, already became a huge name in the city of Gurugram and few neighbouring towns. Being backed up by the Bank of Punjab and some new sponsorship deals, PWP started doing house shows in other cities such as Swarnprastha, Tilprastha and Panaprastha.

One of the people that contributed to the rise of PWP was the first-ever PWP Worlds Heavyweight Champion, Mahinderjot Ahuja. At 31 years old at that time, he grabbed the hearts of thousands of fans who flocked the stands just to see him do his entrance. He was a huge man, at 6 feet and 6 inches tall and 120 kilograms, he looked and acted like a champion. He was known for the way he held the title and walked gracefully towards the ring. His acts of kindness outside of the squared circle such as helping thousands of children get the education they deserved, but couldn't afford. He was known as one of the 'lions' of PWP and is part of the Hall of Lions today. Other champions such as Karamjit Nauhwar, Ekambir Bana and Harmandarpal Sabharwal were also huge contributors to the early success of PWP and were also considered one of the 'lions' of PWP. One thing about the PWP that brought them success was their style of wrestling which included a bit of 'Indianism'. The inclusion of Pehlwani (Indian wrestling) and Indian martial arts pleased the crowds. In just four years, PWP became a household name with every kid in the neighbouring wanting to become a PWP wrestler one day. Mahaveer Phogat's and Eshwar Phogat's relationship was still rocky but started to heel a bit. Eshwar Phogat was still annoyed with the fact that his son chose to pursue 'fake' wrestling over 'real' wrestling and felt this was going to harm the image of wrestling in Pratapgadh. This didn't stop Mahaveer, however, as he went to hold house shows in many cities which included the huge city of Indraprastha. He even went on to hold a house show in his own village, this time the people welcoming him with open arms.

Around the time of 1987, the culture of pro wrestling revolved around the existence of PWP. Even retired athletes and celebrities decided to have a go at pro wrestling. One example is Parimal Dhanuka, who was a famous politician in Chittorgarh before he decided to move away from politics and become a pro wrestler. He had grown a passion for the sport and had followed PWP for five years at that time. He trained under Mahaveer Phogat and became of the most admired and well-known pro wrestlers and his name is known to this day.

In 1993, Mahaveer Phogat decided to expand on the PWP wrestling style by including other martial arts such as Kalaripayattu, which originated from Kerala. Hanish Vachaspati, a man from Kerala who decided to settle in Gurugram, signed with the PWP promotion. He quickly became the most beloved wrestler after having his first matchup. This was due to his experience in kalarippayattu and his performance amazed the crowd. He became the 'Lion' of PWP when he defeated Parimal Dhanuka to become the first non-Pratapgadhi to become the PWP Worlds Heavyweight Champion. However, he died just a year later after winning the PWP Worlds Heavyweight Champion which shocked the wrestling community. A tournament was held in his name, called the 'Vachaspatti Shield' in his tribute.

PWP Worlds Heavyweight Championship

The PWP Worlds Heavyweight Championship is the most prestigious and oldest championship in the history of pro wrestling in Pratapgadh. It is the main championship of PWP, held by greats such as Mahinderjot Ahuja, Karamjit Nauhwar, Ekambir Bana and Harmandarpal Sabharwal. First introduced in 1980 by the former owner of PWP and current owner Navjot Phogat's father, Mahaveer Phogat. Since then, it has been a symbol of hard work and determination in Pratapgadh as the 'lions' (legends) of PWP built its legacy with their own blood and sweat. It is currently 45 years old and still counting as it remains the most priced title to this day even after the decline of PWP.

The one who holds the title is considered the 'alpha' in PWP and is held in high regard to others. The champion also has special privileges such as consulting the owner of PWP, getting to pick their opponents, sitting alongside the commentators and enjoying the luxuries of PWP. Wrestlers fight to get higher in the rankings to get an opportunity at the PWP Worlds Heavyweight Championship. Some walk-in packs, meaning allies to get the championship while others carve their destiny alone and claim the championship. Only the strongest, fastest, resilient and best wrestler holds this championship. So don't expect free opportunities cause you're gonna have to prove yourself.
