Arrival - Kuritibah, Almuzahara

It felt like an oasis. Deep in the heart of the Almuzaharan forest, Kuritibah was a city harking back to Almuzahara's past - As the players arrived in the city to get ready for their game against Kriegiersien, the shade of the trees around them gave them at least some protection from the sunlight. This was unlike what Squidroidia had to witness last IAC in Havynwilde - Snow, shovels, snow shovels, and cold. In Almuzahara, where they would stay for at least this group stage and maybe a bit more after that, it was tropical, and especially at the coasts it was hot. Very hot. Some might say sweltering.

For the Squidroidian team at least, it was perfect to get some training in before they were to take the pitch for the first time since Adam Johnson took the helm. The Barunian, who guided his country to 2 World Cup finals appearances and a Semi-Final placement at the inaugural IAC, was not with his usual team, his side that got to the last 16 of the World Cup many years ago. Instead of the familiar sights of Barunia, he was with squids, speaking a language foreign to him, as well as human counterparts with names like Shingen and Hideo. Not the names he was used too back home.

In such a land like Almuzahara, the negative image of people outside the nation of their birth was clear to see. Some players liked the city they trained, but the citizens of this place gave them the bad looks, the stink eyes, the instant judgement, it felt like the nation was co-hosting the IAC with Muralos just for the national pride, not to let other nations and their culture shine past the heritage and the pride of Almuzahara. Someone, however, had to host it anyways.

To be in such a world where not even your fans were treated well. There was nothing bad happening to them, but the fans of the Inklings were having to be extra careful, taking everything with a grain of salt. All the while, it seemed, the team were getting ready for their game. Squidroidia were a pot 1 side heading into the draw, and with the group they have to face, mayyyybe TJUN-ia would be their hardest task.

The flashbacks to IAC 12 began.

Losing to A Flock of Seagulls. A literal fucking flock of seagulls. That should have warned them. A close tough fought game against Murphtannia, a 9 goal thriller... And then Megistos. The team were glad Megistos didn't participate this time, as the Free Republics jokes should've been left in the dumpster a while ago. Maybe there was a run at stake for the team if they were lucky. Luck needed to be on their side more than ever.

Especially with the SFA wanting a way out of this Independents mess. Yes, a name change for the FFI competitions was a start, and one that would probably keep Omerica in, but competition needed to improve... Oh yeah, there was a Zwangzugian archipelago in the mix. This was going to get complicated.

Head Coach: Adnan Suliaha, 56
Assistant Head Coach: Katiri Hedge, 61
General Playing Style: Being a nation which emphasises on fast paced attacking football, Poafmersia would prefer to attack rather then defend. The players can be quite aggressive in getting back the ball, yet they do not keep high amounts of possession and they are very good at making use of mistakes by the opposition team to punish the opponents. Although this team has a weakness in defending set pieces, they are more fond of scoring through set pieces. Another way of scoring is often pressuring opponents through high defensive lines. This team, however, is likely to push forward even more attack, going even further to try to score more goals. The more goals, the better.

Formations: 3-4-3, 4-3-3

Fans
Poafmersian fans are crazy about football, and their loud cheers ring about in the stadiums they visit. They are very willing to disturb the peace in the area to celebrate their win after matches, so matches are best held in the afternoon or early evenings. You can spot Poafmers booking large meeting rooms in hotels, going to bars in groups. Apart from that, they do pick up after themselves, and prevent causing much trouble apart from celebrating. You can be assured, however, that they would be travelling around to support their team, so do reserve half the spots in stadiums for them because they would pack it to the brim.

Head Coach Adnan Suliaha has decided to stick to the 23 players that made a miracle run to the World Cup quarterfinals, with no change at all this time. This is the first time such a situation happened at the IAC, but with Adnan and the team eyeing a record 3rd straight IAC title, Adnan is taking no chances, and won't give the title up with a fight. You would, however, expect more rotations to occur this time, as Adnan takes the time to induct some of the substitutes into the starting lineup.

All the football news that’s fit to print!
IAC 12 group preview: No, Central Shaneville, Omerica are not the top seeds
By Anastasia Saint-Martin

It is that time of the every other year again: the Independent Whateverdrinkingutensilwe’recallingit. For only the third time in history and the first time in nearly two decades, the tournament will be co-hosted by two different Independent Associations—namely Muralos and Almuzahara—and it will be intensely cutthroat, as a staggering two-thirds of the participating teams will make a swift exit after the group stage.

In spite of the amateur hour farce two years ago, the machinations of the IAC have (undeservedly) spared the Incorrigibles’ seeding. Omerica are nestled squarely next to Squornshelous (the one not managed by Anne-Sophie Groothuis) in the middle of Pot 2, nominally favourites to advance to the hilariously tiny knockout stage. Furthermore, Omerica have been drawn into the highly advantageous first position and as such, the Incorrigibles will play all of their group matches at the Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky Arena in Sahalena-Urbeto, eliminating the need for the team or supporters to travel between cities for the duration of the group stage. Not that the Hyperloop system would have made that much of an issue to begin with, mind.

First up on Omerica’s busy group stage schedule are Central Shaneville, who have laboured under the false impression that Omerica are the top seeded team in the group. Furthermore, they actually think we’re good (and the jury’s still out on that question, to be totally honest). One of the surprises of IAC 5 in the so-called “Free Republics”, Central Shaneville fell off the side of a cliff until re-appearing at the last Championship—where they were just beaten out by Trolleborg and Drawkland—and finishing 6–2–10 in World Cup 87 qualifying. Now led by Cam Meister, the team will hope to recapture the magic of that first IAC run in Muralos and knocking Omerica down a peg or two would be a great start on the road to indie heaven.

Next up come designated unranked team Al Wadiya, who seem to have brought exactly one shirt for the entire squad to share. Not much is known about the reclusive dictatorship, but they appear to be confident enough in their talents to leave five of their twenty-three roster slots completely empty. The nation is so reverent of “Protector, Guide, Philosopher, Father (not literally), Beloved Oppressor, Supreme Leader Admiral General Aladeen” that they tried to put a moment of silence into a press release. Hopefully they’ll observe about ninety minutes of silence during the game on Matchday 2 and we can cakewalk this match. If they have to take points off any team, please let it be against the next team on this list.

And that would be the newly-minted titans of losing in IAC grand finals: Huelavia. Huelavia go into the tournament in a three-way race with two-time defending champions Poafmersia and IAC 9 winners New Lusitania for top billing in the that seeding system an absolute idiot from the United Republican Soccer Federation created for the IAC X draw; they are therefore runaway favourites to win this group at a cantor and will likely break Drawkland’s absolutely ridiculous record for most consecutive IAC grand finals. They have to crush us like roaches under their feet like they did in Huesillia the last time we met. Just promise you’ll go gentle on us this time, Los Amarillos.

Then we get to Hot Skitty on Wailord Action, hereinafter HSOWA. The designated ridiculous team of this group, they will evidently be fielding (we’re still not sure if that’s the right word to use) a flock of birds, which they have very kindly given actual names to this time. Defensive stalwarts and perennial IAC also-rans, they have never made it to the Championship’s knockout stage before—though they did finish as one of the four best third-place teams at the 24-team IAC 7—and it does not appear that they will do so this time around. Unless there is some miracle as great as the URSF avoiding any kind of consequence for the IAC 11 disgrace, HSOWA will thankfully be but a footnote in this edition of the Championship.

And finally, the Incorrigibles will close out the group stage against Devonta, who have entered and failed to issue a roster press release for the tenth time. Obscuring the identities of those who will be playing for them is actually a strategy that has paid off for them a couple of times with trips to the knockout stage and they have generally come close to advancing even when they get knocked out, so ideally, the Incorrigibles want this game to be a dead rubber; if Omerica are entering this match with advancement on the line, every butt cheek from coast to coast to coast will be clenched. The Incorrigibles long relished in this role in the World Cup qualifiers, so we know this adage well: never underestimate the spoiler.

If Omerica can get through this difficult crapshoot of a group, it’s on to the crapshoot known as the knockout stage, where the Incorrigibles first run up against a team from Group H: Drawkland, Galimencia, United Pink States, Lorrana, Juvencus or Squornshelous (still not the one managed by Anne-Sophie Groothuis). Should Omerica have sufficiently pleased the deity of randomness and escaped the wrath of Bridget Kilkenny, then one of twelve nations from Group E or F is on the cards for the quarterfinals. The Incorrigibles will then have to get past another team that played in Muralos, the IAC Organising Committee President’s hungry banhammer and one of the twenty-four teams playing in Almuzahara. But if they can, Alexis Stephanidis will go down as one of the greatest Omerica managers to ever live.

Either that or we’re on our way home after losing to Devonta and the latter is far more likely considering our recent Championship form, to be honest. ◇

THE GASPILLAGE ADVENTURES

Written by Baskar Kumar
OOC:
The Previous Parts of the series can be found in the IBC RP.

The Aliens were very happy, they must have never seen such a large reserve of Garbage in their life. They started running towards the building but, Donald stopped them. He said "Wait, no. Don't go there!" The Aliens were surprised. Donald continued "That's the municipal dump yard, you should get permission from the Mayor to use them., Let's meet the Mayor." They walk towards the Office of the Mayor. Everyone were frightened at the sight of the aliens and Donald asked the Mayor "May we come in?". The mayor replied "Please do." Suddenly, the mayor saw the Aliens and he jumped in fright. "Wait what? Who are you?" he shouted. Donald said "Don't be frightened sir, they're here for help." "Help? From me?" asks the Mayor. Donald replies yes!. The mayor is still confused but a small smile was appearing in his face. He asked "How may I help you?". The aliens said "We need the Chavo Yard you own. By Chavo I mean, Garbage." The mayor was laughing "Haha, Why not? But what will we get?". The Aliens weren't amused, they took out their weapon which made the Mayor go frightened. They said "Here, we will supply weapons. Even the ammunition." The mayor wasn't happy first, but later he said "Okay, sure. Welcome to Earth." The Aliens grinned. The Aliens established Diplomacy between the earthlings at last. They recruited more and more aliens to the earth and to work for the goodwill. They prepared weapons and other invention in the tenure. They established a space station which helped them to interchange trade. The trade went by smoothly for three years and on one day that happened. A Flying Saucer landed on the Observatory (Former Garbage Plant) destroying the radars and the light tower. Everyone was startled.

MANY QUESTIONS
New Central Shaneville manager Cam Meister yesterday learnt that you cant win them all the hard way in what was Central Shaneville's biggest loss in its history as Omerica ran away with the game in Muralos, the crowd couldn't quite believe what they were seeing however Mr. Meister was caught after the match saying "I don't know what happened, I can't explain it."

Elsewhere the Omerican fans were over the moon and it what was a pretty easy game for them, Central Shaneville had targeted several of their attackers as potential threats and this was the case with Jessie Beckett and Alexis Chrysanthos causing problems for Lewis Young and company at the back, further up the field Central Shaneville strikers David Vujanic and Josh Smith hardly saw any of the ball which lead to a shouting match between them and some of the Central Shaneville midfielders as the two strikers questioned their own teammates tactics.

"Congratulations to Omerica, they deserved to win that one" Cam Meister (the manager) said "It was my debut as a proper manager, after years of being the assistant and we got thrashed I feel like we need to take a strong look at ourselves going forward as our form internationally has been atrocious as of late and I can't think why."

Elsewhere in Shaneville City Park (where the match was being streamed on big screens) the Central Shaneville fans were looking despondent as their Independents Cup dream became a nightmare very early on.

Independent Associations Championship: Lorrana 2-0 United Pink States

MAKAROV, Muralos ---- Lorrana put together an entertaining performance during a 2-0 victory against the United Pink States in the first of its five matches at the 12th IAC, held in Muralos and Almuzahara. Goals early and late from Berd Ravilu and Azi Baddim, respectively - both teed up by Kiyon – earned Lorrana the full three points as well as third place in the Group H standings.

Lorrana's relentless early pressure was rewarded in the 11th minute when Kiyon sent a pass to Ravilu down the left wing and after a nifty bit of dribbling into the penalty area, he ripped a shot from the top corner of the box for the game’s opening goal. In a free-flowing game that featured tremendous transition play from both teams, Lorrana continued to threaten down the stretch and the aftermath of a free kick sparked an insurance goal for Lorrana, as Kiyon served a ball for Baddim to volley home in the 88th minute.
NS Stats are sometimes right, but sometimes wrong. TG me if you have questions, but the most important thing to know is that Lorrana is capitalist, even though the stats show otherwise

A Dance with Football
A look into the lives of the people involved in Adabian football and those associated with them

Chapter 14: The Offer

Adab City

Now that Saad had time to think about it, it was actually pretty nice of Naram-Sin to remember that he now lived in Adab City. As much as they had drifted away from each other over the last several years, Naram-Sin at least knew where he lived, instead of embarrassing himself by asking if he could come over to Baghdad, to that house that he had shared with his beloved wife, a reminder of a life now long gone.

After Maria died, Saad and their daughter Aida remained in the Baghdad house for some time, accompanied by Saad’s small crew of housekeepers and Walid the old gardener. This lasted until Saad took up the post of manager of the Adabian national team ahead of Independents Cup 5, upon which he bought a slightly smaller house in Adab City and moved his entire household there. To avoid paying for maintenance, Saad transferred ownership of the Baghdad house to Maria’s sister, with the understanding that he could return there whenever he wanted to. The publicly-stated reason was that he wanted to live closer to the team. This explanation was true, but also ignored another aspect behind the move: the memories of Maria and the life they once had in Baghdad had grown all too painful for him, and he resolved to put those memories behind.

When, during the financial crisis, the government decided to stop sending the national team to foreign competitions, leading Saad to quit his job, he considered selling his house in Adab City and returning to Baghdad, reasoning that he now had nothing to do in the capital. This he did not do, the unstated reasoning – of course – being that he did not want to be haunted by those memories again. Maria’s sister retained ownership of the Baghdad house, sometimes renting the rooms to university students, but never actually living there herself. Its past owner, despite his stated desire to return sometime in the future, ended up never doing that.

But a Kaykali was soon to return to that house. Aida grew up, graduated from university, became a lawyer, and was assigned to her law firm’s office in Baghdad. With Saad’s financial situation now much more secure due to his real estate investments, he persuaded Maria’s sister to give the house back to him, intending, in turn, to give it to Aida once she had enough money to pay for the upkeep. This he did a few years later.

And that brought us to the present day. Father and daughter now lived in different cities. With both of them immersed in their respective jobs, their meetings became increasingly rare, though they still kept in touch by phone. Most of the housekeepers had grown old and returned to their home villages. Saad still enjoyed the company of Walid the old gardener - and now also the sole housekeeper - although he had not been in good health lately. His driver Salim would come in from Monday to Friday, and on weekends if Saad needed him. But the lack of family did leave him feeling lonesome at times.

The car rolled onto the narrow road leading to the house, heralded by the sounds of its tires clashing against some mud on the road. It was a decidedly middle-class neighborhood; anyone looking at the row of almost identical-looking houses – most of them having two floors, though a few others had three – without knowing who lived there would never guess that one of the residents was the CEO of a property company and previously manager of the Adabian national football team.

The car came to a momentary halt right outside the only green fence in that row. An old man slowly pushed the fence aside, allowing the car access to the garage. “Thank you, Salim,” said Saad from his front seat, tapping his driver on the shoulder as he opened the door with his other hand and slowly pushed his legs down to the ground. The old man walked towards him.

“Walid-“

“Mr. Kaykali, Mr. Araqasdah came here about… fifteen minutes ago. I let him inside. He said he wants to meet you.”

“Yeah, he called me earlier. I told him to come over. I told Mat to prepare some tea for him.” Saad now started towards the front door and into the living room. Walid opened the door for his boss, then closed it behind him. “I hope he did remember to prepare the tea,” he added with a chuckle.

The living room was sparsely decorated, the main attraction being a brown sofa directly facing the TV, with a red-brown Anatolian rug covering the floor between. A small round table sat on the carpet, not very far from the sofa. On one corner of the room, right below the clock, there was a mahogany chair, facing another, smaller square table with a cup of tea on it. And tonight, on that chair sat a visitor: Naram-Sin Araqasdah, President of the Adab Football Association.

Saad nodded, more to himself than to anyone else, then greeted his visitor, his voice a mixture of weariness and pleasure at once again seeing an old friend. “Naram-Sin,” he said simply, flashing a small smile. The visitor, who had hitherto been staring down at his phone, slowly raised his head, then lifted himself from the chair, his eyes now level with Saad’s.

“Saad,” the visitor said, beaming. The host and his visitor now moved towards each other, until they were barely a foot apart. Naram-Sin put his hands on Saad’s shoulders, and pulled him into a hug. “How long have we not seen each other?”

“I don’t know,” Saad replied, putting his own arms around Naram-Sin’s shoulders and sinking into the hug. “A few years?”

“It’s been too long,” said Naram-Sin. He looked older – well, he obviously was older now, but he looked much older – and walked more slowly than when Saad last saw him. His hair had gone entirely white. Saad was obviously pleased to once again see him. For now, for a few minutes, he would let that feeling of pleasure overcome any misgivings he had over Naram-Sin’s intentions.

Naram-Sin released Saad from their hug, then retreated back to the chair, while Saad setttled down onto the sofa. He glanced briefly at the front door, making sure it was closed. “You know,” Saad continued, laying his hands on the table, looking at Naram-Sin, “how come we didn’t talk more often?”

Naram-Sin chuckled. “I don’t know, Saad. You’ll have to tell me. Actually, yeah, I don’t know why either. I still have your number on my phone.”

“I have your number, too. I mean, we do chat occasionally on WhatsApp. So… I guess it’s not a complete estrangement.”

“True, true. How come neither of us bothered to call the other, though?”

“I don’t know. I guess we just have our own priorities at the moment,” said Saad, his smile growing somewhat wider. He pointed at the cup of tea. “Have you tried it? My housekeepers make good tea. They do it even better than I do.”

“Yeah, I like it. It’s just the right amount of hot. Not too hard on my tongue, but I can still feel the heat.” Naram-Sin looked down again at his phone for a moment, then back up at Saad. “Do you still talk to Inimabakesh?”

Saad sighed, turning his gaze away from Naram-Sin to somewhere between the floor and the TV. “Sometimes, but not as often as we used to. Why do you ask me that? Do you not speak to him yourself?”

“I haven’t spoken to him in… a while.” Saad saw Naram-Sin appearing to nod, certainly not to him, maybe trying to reassure himself that he had, indeed, not spoken to Inimabakesh in a while. We really all have drifted away from each other. “You know he’s a grandfather now, right?”

“Yeah.”

If Saad thought that Naram-Sin didn’t really want to talk about this, then he had a point, as Naram-Sin appeared immediately to shift the subject of the conversation. That did make the conversation a little more comfortable for Saad. “How’s Aida? She’s still in Baghdad?”

“She still is,” Saad beamed, “busy being a lawyer and all that.”

“Yeah, being a lawyer can be rather time-consuming. Do you still visit Baghdad often?”

“No, not really. There’s nothing for me there. Besides, my daughter is living her life there and I don’t want to go there and make her feel like I’m interfering.”

“Where does your daughter work again?”

“Mashda and Partners. Khalid and Eliyahu used to work there, if you remember, before they started their own office.”

“Your lawyers? Yeah, I think I remember them. Good chaps.”

“And reliable. The best in the business.” Saad’s hands retreated from the table and onto his thighs. He leaned back on the sofa, tightening his lips, lowering his gaze somewhat before turning to Naram-Sin. “Look at us, Naram-Sin. We’ve all grown old. My daughter is an adult now. A lawyer! How time flies.”

“I know that feeling,” Naram-Sin sighed. “You know, Saad, you’ve surely heard the good news now…”

Oh Allah, here we go. Saad tightened his lips even more, though he made sure to lower his head so as not to be noticed by Naram-Sin. Naram-Sin’s words about Adab getting back into international football went by like a blur, and so did his comments about how the Adabian team could prepare for the World Cup by first entering the Independents Cup, just as they had done all those years ago.

“It’s great news,” Saad commented. “I’m excited to see how the team will do, especially after, what? Thirteen, fourteen years?” He let out a little chuckle.

“And that is why I’m here,” said Naram-Sin, solemnly leaning forward on his chair towards Saad.

There was a moment of silence where both men looked at each other. Not a word was said, but they both knew what was in store. Eventually, it was Naram-Sin who broke the silence. “You know very well that no one else in this country is more respected, experienced, knowledgeable, and well-equipped for this job. And everyone in this country knows that. Saad, I need you to come back as manager of the Adabian national team.”

Three tournaments simultaneously too much?

Independent Associations Championship 12
Kriegiersien 0-2 Squidroidia.

After losing against Squidroidia in the first match of the IAC, critiques blame the travelling for the team.

"These are young boys and they have to fly from Islansi, where they played in the UBFA, to Almuzahara and then they are also in the U18 World Cup in Zeta Reka and Hugeltaldom. That is too much. Especially for such a small squad with only 16 players. Only a few injuries and I tell you, the team is broken. I don't think that the coaches can help then", said a man from the street after we gave him a shiny thing for his guitar solo.

Kriegiersien lost 3-0 against Japerlasa and now needs to win two games against them to still be able to lift the regional Sumerset Cup of Balder.

After the loss against Squidroidia they also are already under immense pressure in the IAC and have to win against Srednjaci.

First Impressions - Kuritibah

The first game of the Adam Johnson era for the Squidroidian national team couldn't have been any better. Well, it could have been better if they won by more than 2 goals, but now wasn't the time for that.

Let me start this off in a better way, shall I say.

In the first game of the 12th Independent Associations Championship, while Poafmersia and Omerica demolished their North Alezian and Central Shanevillan counterparts respectively, the Adam Johnson era of the Squidroidian national team was about to begin in Almuzahara. An era of change, if you call it so. The team had a new formation, a new identity, and a new manager at the helm, a complete reset of the Squidroidian philosophy was in order as Johnson, a Barunian, was managing a bunch of squids. Or at least, that's what he thought they were when he entered the job.

Kriegiersien were playing 3 tournaments at once - A 16 player roster was in the RTC Under-18 World Cup in Zeta Reka, the Sumerset Cup of Balder and the IAC. With such a small roster and so much travel time in between the nations, any injuries would have complicated things. It was a miracle that they stayed put in the first place. The fatigue of such travel hasn't happened to the Squidroidian NT, but if it did happen, things would be a bit tiring...

Safe to say that the Inklings got to work with the fatigue issue being the biggest factor for Kriegiersien in their loss. Early in the game Shiba Tetsuo would get his first goal on his debut, dribbling through the defense before beating the keeper to kick off the Squids IAC campaign. Other than that and a goal by Katsuyoshi off the bench, not much happened - Despite the fatigue the Kriegiersien defense was still solid, and even then the team had a semi-hard time breaking past Che Lopera. One game in and it was already looking like a good run.

But their goals for an IAC victory were to be given a real test as the Inklings play against a TJUN-ia team that nearly qualified for the World Cup the past 2 times. The Jags were the pot 2 team in the group (Squidroidia was pot 1), so in a sense it was going to prepare the team for the Round of 16 and onwards. But just like in Havynwilde, one bad slipup would mean disaster...

Let's hope disaster doesn't strike.

HUElavia Hunts and Bags a Big Opening Victory!

Hot Skitty on Wailord Action 0-2 HUElavia
(Navarro 7', Grunberg 89')
(Tomari Stadium, Tomari)

For the 5th consecutive edition and for the 7th time ever, HUElavia was participating in the Independent Associations Championship, leading a group where they looked to make a statement early on. For this opening match, their opponents were Hot Skitty on Wailord Action, who were determined to give Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos a difficult time throughout the match. The match was set to be played at Tomari Stadium (18,500) in Tomari, the smallest of the venues in Group G. Despite the small venue, thousands of HUElavians took to the stadium to cheer on the team, having at whole endzone to themselves, while it was clear that there was more supporters for Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos than for HSOWA. The team wore the Away Alternative in its debut match with the new style, and the main Xi played in the match. Ramos made history being the first ever female starting goalie for HUElavia, and Navarro was the Captain. The ball rolled and another IAC was underway!

Hot Skitty on Wailord Action were determined to play defensively and try to prevent HUElavia from having possession from the get-go. In the 7th minute, Conti had taken the ball from Kenhoro, and was taken down Bashamo around the edge of the penalty box for a free kick, along with an instant yellow card being given. Navarro stepped up, gave a low shot that went past the players moving about and past Yorunozuku, rolling into the corner of the goal, making it 1-0. The crowd jumped up and celebrated with passion, making the goal song barely audible, while Navarro celebrated in the corner giving hugs and hi-fives with his teammates, and finally sharing the iconic kiss with his wife, Hamada-Navarro. As the game progressed, HSOWA tried to get some sort of attack going, but the HUElavian defense kept their ground and dispossessed the players with ease. In particular, Mariño had a stellar performance stopping shots and sending long balls through to create chances, while Mendieta was a wall in the defense. Ramos had some saves here and there from Faiaro and Junaipa, but nothing to concern her. At the half, the HUElavia had a 1-0 lead and the fans were satisfied with the performance up to the moment.

In the second half, HSOWA kept on going on the defensive. looking to go for what looked like a tie. Despite this, HUElavia kept on pressuring and made shots left and right, particularly Sol and Hamada-Navarro looked to score, but Yorunozuku made saves left and right to stop goals from going in. Late in the game, Hamada-Navarro, Conti-Esposito and Muller were taken out for Moutinho-Figo, Mantovani-Jardim, and Grunberg respectively. In the 89th minute, HUElavia won a corner and it was taken by Mantovani-Jardim. Up it went and it curved towards the box, where Grunberg took a header and into the goal it went, making it 2-0. Grunberg was mobbed by her teammates while the fans cheered and jumped with joy and passion. Shortly there after, the match ended and HUElavia had another debut with a shutout and a solid victory.

The next match will be HUElavia vs Central Shaneville, which will be at Alexandrovosk-Sakhalinsky Arena (21,484), in Saĥalena-Urbeto. The B-Team will play with Vannier in goal and Moutinho-Figo being the Captain. The Home Uniform will be used for the match. HUElavia continues to train and study well, as well as get help from the Sport Psychologists to help with anxieties throughout the tournament. The team looks to continue playing well and getting victories, especially where their blood is on fire with motivation and fury to do well. The fans continue to enjoy their stay and continue to hope and pray for the success of the team. Here's to the next game and one for us to enjoy!

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

Muralosian National Soccer Team Jumps Ahead in 12th Independent Associations' Championship
At Home, Hawks Best National Soccer Team of Grey County
(Easter Egg: Hawk Fans and La Gazeto de Sportoj's Klara Antonova on Social Media)
By Adamo Tanaka and Jonathan Liu
March 25, 2021

On Thursday, the Muralosian national soccer team played its first match in the group stage of the 12th Independent Associations' Championship, which Muralos is hosting with the nation of Almuzahara.

The Hawks are in Group E of the tournament, putting them at home in Urbego– the capital of Muralos– and its neighboring city Urbo. Their first group stage match, against Grey County, took place in Dynamo Stadium Nord-Urbo. For the Hawks, it was a resounding victory against the newcomers to international soccer competition and sport in general. This is not to say that Grey County has been unsuccessful in its forays so far: its football team reached the final of the Arena Bowl in HUElavia, and a doubles team from the country (Joe Schmo/Tom Schmomm) won the latest International Playground Wallball Championship in Urbego.

Against Grey County, the Hawks played with assurance, maintaining possession through about 72% of the match. Some challenges from Grey County's squad proved troublesome, but in most instances, Muralosian defenders Ryo Takeda; Rikardo Lei; Koralo Petrov; and Aleksandro Kim succeeded at thwarting them. (So did Rebeka and Aminda Mori as they replaced Takeda and Kim in the second half.) Goalkeeper Rodion Markov summarily blocked the eight shots Grey County fielded, catching the ball for six of them.

A chance for Muralos came in the 9th minute of the match, when Vilhelmo Lumin made a diagonal pass to Adamo Brava from the right flank of the pitch. Brava came close to commanding the ball, which had bounced along the pitch like a stone skipping across a river. Excitement was high at this moment, but Brava failed to slow his pace in time; he also ended up offside, which barred fellow striker Rui from assisting him. Eventually, one of Grey County's defenders gained possession of the ball.

Muralos' golden opportunity came about 25 minutes later. Passes among the Hawks were much smoother now, confined to relatively short distances. RTM-1 commentator Gao Hui noted the "slowing pace of the game, as though the Hawks are setting us up for something." At this moment, the ball made its way from Johano Abramovich to Galina Shchedrina, who had just entered the match in Vilhelmo Lumin's place. Shchedrina dribbled the ball forward as a Grey County midfielder guarded her cautiously. She then let the ball fly toward goal as Grey County's goalkeeper shuffled backward, likely caught off guard.

"I think that was an incredible play," Hawks' head coach Jozefo Koltakov said of Shchedrina's goal in a press conference on Friday. "Galina is extremely calculated in her risk-taking. She does what she knows she can do. It is preparation plus calculation that makes her such a valuable part of our team and such a clean playmaker."

The Hawks expanded their lead in the second half of the match, thanks to a penalty kick by Adamo Brava and– most stunningly– a late goal by the 15-year old striker Daniil Lee from Urbego High School. Lee entered the match as a third striker with Brava and Valora Lin. His chance came after a corner kick by the Hawks' Johano Abramovich. Both Muralosian players and Grey County players struggled for the ball. A header by Valora Lin sent the ball off Lee's right shoulder. As he pivoted and made space for himself, Lee landed the ball in front by bouncing it off his right knee and then his right foot. This maneuver put him in prime position for the Hawks' third goal.

FINAL
Muralos 3 - 0 Grey County

Shchedrina 34', Brava 69' (pen.), Lee 86'

This goal marks Lee's first ever as a player for the Muralosian national team, and it makes him one of the youngest ever goalscorers for the Hawks. He attributed his thinking during the Muralos-Grey County match to the popular game four-square, in which four players pass a soccer ball to each other while keeping it in the air. "I've played a lot of [four-square] in school," Lee said in a post-game interview with La Gazeto de Sportoj. "I think my instincts from the game are still fresh, too. It was a thrill to apply that to creating another chance for our team."

Muralos next faces Indusse on Saturday, March 27th, in Zemlinsky National Stadium. The match will be broadcast live on RTM-1, Radio Muralana-Sportema (FM 90.1), and rtmnet.mur. Tickets for the match can be bought on biletoj.mur or by calling +8 42 245-3865.

Discussion on Muralosian Social Media
Fans of the Hawks were surprised to hear, in the recent commercial on RTM-1 for the 12th Independent Associations Championship, that the Hawks would play in Komcatt Arena; Zemlinsky National Stadium; and Dynamo Stadium Nord-Urbo. At the time of the commercial's airing, the draw for the IAC-12 group stage had yet to take place. A spokesperson for RTM-1 acknowledged that it would have been a blunder on their part, had Muralos been drawn into a different group.

Here is a sampling of Muralosian social media discussion on the subject. This snippet is included with permission from all users in the discussion. It appears in the original Esperanto, as well as an English translation below.

English Translation:
  • "They didn't know for sure that they would play in Muralos. Was the draw rigged?" (from trikorno, or "tricorn")
  • "No no no. They could have played in Poronaysk, Gastello, or Makarov, though ... that would have been cool *sighs* (from bluaklifostano, or "blue cliff [Bluecliff] stan")
  • "Now that we have Hyperloop, why complain? (from ŝatantodeakcipitroj, or "lover of hawks" )

Here is another post from La Gazeto de Sportoj's Klara Antonova about ridership on Urbo's monorail, a key method of transport to the Muralos-Grey County match today.

"Ridership on the Urbo Monorail reached its peak today due to the IAC-12 match between Muralos and Grey County. The second-busiest day was that of Muralos' WCQ match against TJUN-ia. IAC-12: Sonnel Special!

IAC-12 SONNEL SPECIAL!
Written By: Natalie Dawson and Lane Durham

The World Cup Cycle has long since ended, and now it's time for that oh-so-special time of the cycle where nations turn their attention to the regional tournaments. For us in Drawkland, we turn to the "regionless" tournament, known as the Independents Association Championship. Or, if you're a normal person, you just call it the Independents Cup. In any case, despite our lone title now being closer to the founding of the tournament than to present day, we have a lot to look forward to. Why is that, you ask?

For the first time since IAC-7, the Independents Cup will be hosted (at least partially this time) on Sonnel. Woohoo! For a tournament where exact regions are largely irrelevant and nations from across the multiverse can participate, it's nice to have the tournament hosted close to home. This time though, it will not be on our glorious shores, but on the shores of the Suntae nation of Almuzahara. They've recently hopped in on the fun of international sports since last IAC and 7NC. We're happy to welcome them to the ranks of Sonnel's household sporting names.

Even better news: a grand total of six (yes, SIX) nations from Sonnel are participating in IAC-12. This is an amazing turnout! And definitely superior to the olden days of the IAC, where the most Sonnel got was Drawkland and sometimes Juvencus. It's nice to have neighbors that are actively participating in the sporting world now. Maybe it'll someday convince more nations to join the fray ... who knows!

Not to mention, our group draw contained not just us, but TWO other Sonnelian nations. Thanks to how the pots shook out (Drawkland and Almuzahara [hosting] in Pot 1, Juvencus and Silver Beach in Pot 3, United Pink States and Oscioru in Pot 5), this was the maximum number of Sonnel nations to possibly be in a group: three. Group H is unofficially the Sonnel group, and it's unfortunate that only two will be able to move on. At least it's chance we could get 100% Sonnel representation from this group into the playoffs. Though we saw how well that went in the recent IBC. Almuzahara and Silver Beach are also buddy-buddy in Group A. Oscioru is the only odd nation out, being all by themselves in Group C.

The only bad news about this great group draw ... this group is hosted in the other cohosting nation, Muralos! We have no problems with Muralos as a nation. In fact, we think they're a great newcomer nation, and hope only the best for them. But how cool would it have been to just have to take a short flight or sail to Almuzahara, rather than having to go off-planet! Silver Beach and Oscioru are the lucky ones, not only did they land on the Almuzahara side to stay on Sonnel, but they're on the same continent as Almuzahara, so their travel costs are minimal compared to a standard sports tournament these days.

Enough of this talk though, let's see our chances against opponent in our group.

GROUP PREVIEW
We're going to go one-by-one against each opponent in the group, in the order we'll be playing them. It's a six-team group in a single round-robin, so we'll be playing five games. As the pot 1 team, we should be able to go undefeated in the group. We all know how well that usually goes though.

Our opener will be our toughest match of the group. The Pot 2 side, Squornshelous, are our opponent. Now you may be thinking, "hey, aren't they the team that beat us in the 3PPO of IAC-8, the last time we made an IAC semifinal?" You're actually wrong, loser! That was the Squornshelan Remnant States, who are a separate body from Squornshelous. I'm a sports journalist, not a historian, so I can't tell you much more than that. This game will be tough, and it's our highest chance of dropping points. You know what though? Fuck it, I'm feeling bold. I predict a glorious victory by the score of 1-3. I don't know why, I just have an inkling of a feeling the match will end that way.

With the second matchday we get the first of back-to-back Sonnel matchups, this one against the United Pink States. The UPS has had little influence in Sonnel's geopolitical complexities recently, but they have decided to start sending teams to international sporting competitions. For that, we applaud them. I, for one, hope to see more of them as time goes on. It would be great to expand the list of Sonnelian nations that others should fear. As for the game itself, the UPS are a Pot 5 side, being lowly ranked after their mediocre first foray into the World Cup Cycle. This should be a win, but anything less would definitely be some way to kickstart a regional rivalry.

The third match will probably be the highest-billed one, at least among Sonnelians. The Revoda Sea Rivalry (Drawkland vs Juvencus) will get another edition, and the first time in a competitive soccer tournament since, oh, Baptism of Fire 64. Yeesh, it's been awhile! The meeting between us two friends will be a big one no matter what. Win, lose, or draw, it's sure to be a fun one. I think no matter the result, there will be a silver lining. Either we win and strengthen our group position, or we drop points to fellow Sonnelians and give them a better chance at advancing to the playoffs (hopefully alongside us)!

Matchday 4 will feature the last of the Sonnel-on-Sonnel matchups when Juvencus takes on the United Pink States. Meanwhile, we'll be facing Galimencia. Not much is known about them. I found that in their home region, they're an empire with territories across their planet. I guess we have something in common! I couldn't find much in the way of information about their team though, so we'll be in the dark at least for the time being. Generally the rule with these kinds of squads is that they're an easy three points, but only a fool counts his eggs before they hatch.

Our group stage will end against Lorrana, a Pacific nation (specifically TEP). They made it into Pot 4 for this IAC, due to their participation in the World Cup Cycle for the first time last cycle. They missed the BoF, but managed to make the CoH where they racked up three points and missed the playoffs. This is their first IAC as far as we can tell, and we're glad to have them. Our chances of winning are high, but no guarantee. At this point we should be wrapping up our campaign and looking forward to the playoffs, so hopefully the only thing this game means for us is whether we'll top or get runner-up in the group.

PLAYOFF PROJECTION
Being the Pot 1 side for our group, we're naturally expected to break through to the playoffs without much trouble. Given our past few lackluster performances in the IAC, advancement to the playoffs is almost guaranteed, but once we're there we'll be hard pressed to break through to the semifinals. Since the old Kick Corps lost the IAC-7 final to Omerica on home soil and were subsequently deposed, it hasn't been smooth sailing. The Elite Eleven have been fine since they took over. In the World Cup, they've managed to become consistent qualifiers, even gaining Drawkland's first World Cup knockout berth. However, the IAC just doesn't seem to be a priority for those bastards.

Whether we make a real playoff run remains to be seen. By recent precedent, it would seem that we'll get dumped out to a hot side in the Round of 16 or Quarterfinals. What I would love to see is a HUElavia vs Drawkland final, since both our teams now have 4 IAC final appearances apiece. At least we went 1/3, but the poor HUElavians are 0/4. Unfortunately, this will be impossible, as not only are we on the same side of the tournament, but our groups are adjacent. It's possible that we meet in the Round of 16, perhaps the Semifinals, depending on the bracket and seeding. There will be no epic final showdown.

On the Muralos side of the tournament, there's a few big threats. HUElavia is one, despite their inability to win a final, they did make four straight. The early rounds of the playoffs are their stomping ground. We also could end up running into Kohnhead (remember them from World Cup 85?), Muralos (home field advantage cannot be underestimated), Tequilo (they've beat us in the IAC playoffs before), Trolleborg (a surprising heavyweight who's come out of nowhere to play hard in the World Cup the last few cycles), and perhaps you could include Omerica as a "contender."

Ultimately the playoffs of any tournament, especially one like the IAC, mostly depends on how the bracket draw shakes out. An easy start can land you in the semis with little trouble, or you could end up having to run a gauntlet just to sniff a podium position. Any team can win on any given day, especially with big-name teams. The only question I have now: is the Elite Eleven finally up for the task of making a real IAC run? Only time will tell. For now, all we can say is good luck, and On Corps.

How did this happen :)

Milzesh Damareshamaim, ABA Channel 1 Sport Commentator

ALMUZAHARA - Lately, North Alezia participated on its first match against Poafmersia. Which resulted in a very devastating 8-0 defeat.
The people are pretty.... Actually, most of them are not angry nor dissapointed, but just wondering how did North Alezia got it that bad on its first match.

North Alezian twitter is pretty divided after the defeat was broadcasted live in ABA Channel 1. Some posted sarcastic and negative comments such as:
Image

Some posted comments of dissapointment such as:
Image

Some protected the North Alezian team with comments such as:
Image

The divide also invites some North Alezian celebrities and important people to come and join in the discussion. One of them is a North Alezian Composer who wrote various North Alezian entries for the Worldvision and World Hit Festival, Andi Robi Idris Novogrody. He in his twitter account commented:
Image

The defeat also affects everyone outside of the internet. For example, in Public Opinion Show after the match, a person named Mika Dalayev said: "Well we tried our best, our team is still new to the game, and they shouldn't get the blame for this. We just got unlucky and still unexperienced in the game."

While Mika's comments are positive, another person named Sevres Sandelha goes full critich where he said: "North Alezia did a few mistakes in the match. It's very dissapointing and I hope that we can do much better next match, because if we can't, I'm afraid we won't"

In the team's side, the reaction are pretty much the same just without the negative things being thrown. Imran Kazada, the Center Middle for the North Alezian team in a short interview said: "Poafmersia is an experienced team. But then, we could've done better and we're a bit dissapointed. However, this won't stop The Galleys from sailing further. The nation needs to remember that The Galleys will never surrender to the enemy until all of their cannonballs are shot. We're still confident, we will continue fighting for the best possibilities there is."

The manager of the team, Mazaqli Al-Sharifqa said: "We get that 8-0 is a massive lost which we realized we could've anticipated before. But this is a learning moment for us because we went against THE best performing team in this cup. We can still do this, we will never surrender until we sank fully."

In the analytic side, Heshmitz Da'areshvotaim said in an interview at North Alezia Sport Morning:
Honestly, the fact that North Alezia would lose is expected. Considering that Poafmersia IS the best team of the bunch. But I understand the public's concern with the fact that the loss is massive. 8-0. We never got that bad in any of our matches before.

Both teams are playing on the offensive side. But Poafmersia are more offensive than North Alezia, so I think that North Alezia should be more careful next time.

I think, there are still four more matches to go, so we still have the chance, especially since North Alezia now understands what's going on, they can wake up and we can see some solid play hopefully later on.

The second North Alezian game will be broadcasted tomorrow at 9/10 PM at ABA Channel 1, where North Alezia is scheduled to go against Treekidistan. Now after the loss, even with the dissapointing result on the first match, there are still considerably big interest on the competition and we can expect fans of North Alezia to go crazier. In Almuzahara and obviously, there are WAY more North Alezians watching at home soil at the comforts of their homes. All of them who has an ABA account can sign in to www.ABA.co.az/ontv/IA12 and watch the competition from there and participate in chat box prepared specifically for this match where they can discuss the match and other things, and there will be a poll which will be available to ABA interactive users as well.

Greetings, compatriots!
It’s TTV from Muralos. Right now we present you opportunity to see details of the first game of our national football team at the 12th Independent Associations Cup.

This if fourth such a tournament for our country, and they are mainly give us reasons for a being sad. First time we unexplicably lost key game to the minnows, second time receive crushing defeat and being eliminated in the first playoff round, without chances to do better. At the third tournament team played well enough to grab top spot in the group, altought not without difficulties – just for being beaten by Squidroidia, whom everyone counted as underdogs. Having lost international basketball, hockey and youth football, Trolleborg fans, of course, want to have something to rejoice with, so footballers have not only prevail over fate that was not loving us too much, but also try to give reason for joy for the whole country.

For opponents, Zwangzug’s associated state of Picksall Islands, this is first international game ever, and it’s must be said, that team decided not to huddle up to box, but tried to move the game closer to the center of the field, trying not to let our midfielders act freely and moving the ball forward whenever possible. On the 20th minute, this tactic almost brought success. While carried away by attempts to support midfielders, our defenders did not make it back fast enough, but at least Du Riis got his mind in the situation and at the last second managed somehow to knock the ball out of goalline, just before the opponents' forward was to send to the empty gate.

Image

This incident forced the guys to get together and remake their game plan, now they tried to go forward through long passes, and having received the ball, immediately try move it to the forwards. And it was this bring a success, Troll got the ball out of the depth of field just like that, and then sent it forward with two touches, where Jivoglot delivered a beautiful shot from the move.

Image

Picksall, who grew up in the Zwangzug football paradigm, did not retreat from their tactics and continued to hold positions, aggressively pressing our players, and before the break, the latter did not manage to create not even one more or less dangerous situations.

The game remained in a shaky balance, and in the second half it’s result could have turned out to be a draw if the opponents had realized their several goal chances, but nevertheless, our lads were able not only to maintain the advantage, but also to increase it. This is Finnsnes, who was released to help the youth, did just that, with a nod of his head laid ball into the net after pass from the flank.

Image

The victory with a score of 2:0 undoubtedly delighted the fans, especially considering that our lads managed not to conceded goals, but questions about the quality of the game still remain.

Sadly we only saw 11 faceless mannequins entering the field ready to play us, it startled our players at first but they were the Galimencia side's representation. This should also serve as a reminder to keep inter-species racism & other forms of it away from football fields.

Mauro De Casio's sudden disappearance after the team's elimination in the hands of Krytenia in the Cup of Harmony, combined with Madeiros' unorthodox tactic of utilising an inexperienced youngster side had drawn some doubts as to whether the team would perform well in the Independents Associations Cup at all, even picking up a victory seemed impossible. Come matchday 1, though, all doubts were cut to bits as the gli attaccanti walked over the Galimencian side with relative ease and seemed to be finding its footing. Although not the main squad, those players could possess a serious first team in the future. The attacking 3 proved to be deadly.

The Galimencian side decided to send 11 nameless and faceless, yet sapient, mannequins onto the field. This initially startled our players, most of whom are not used to playing football against players of different species. Rest assured, experienced Madeiros was able to calm his squad before things turned too hot into the game. The plan was simple, attack, but keep a small eye on to the back side. The engine fired on quite early, on the 16th minute, Joao Pereyra pulled an excellent effort, dribbling past 2 Galimencian defenders who had him cornered by doing a magnificent elastico to get between them and utilising the space given to him decided to cross it to Coste who volleyed the ball on the top right side of the net, leaving the Galimencian goalkeeper unable to react. Celebrations were rampant on the stadium upon that first goal. Soon after, Coste would prove to be a threat again, this time with a long-range shot that hit the top side of the crossbar before heading wide. The Galimencians did attempt an attack towards the end of the first half, when the Galimencian forward hit a rocket that Ungaro managed to save magnificently. On the counter, which was also the last chance of the first half, a quick succession of passes between Cavallo, Coste and Campana found the latter in an advantadgeous spot to increase the team's lead in the game, however his shot was blocked by the Galimencian keeper. As such, the team was only 1-0 at half-time, a respectable result thus far.

Entering into the second half, the same beastly attitude remained ingrained in our youth players. Dudu Madeiros decided to utilise a couple new players with unique styles not appreciated by coaches before. Enterting InterSerone's Josefina Portieri, known to many as a more reserved possession holder and a utiliser of the sides instead of far crosses onto the opposing side's third. Pietro Alberte was also entered before that as well, known to many as a new Alberighi with his lightning quick speed, instead of reliance on dribbling and crossing like other sideways midfielders and lastly, Ganymede Garcia, who may be leaving S.S.C Vilan this time around after an overperforming season to the lowly side. Loads of opportunities followed by all 3 attacking fronts, with no result. An excellent Garcia curved shot was saved by the goalkeeper, but Campana's rebound hit the post before heading wide. However, the goal drought was brought to the end by none other than Campana himself on the 86th minute. Kouyaté managed to dribble through a Galimencian midfielder heading his way before crossing it through to Campana's right foot with extreme accuracy, with the latter bringing the ball to a more comfortable spot to score the screamer and give gli attaccanti the final blow it needed to give. As such, the match ended 2-0 and gli attaccanti has stepped into this Independent Associations Cup on the right foot.

Next matchday is against Lorrana who are coming victorious against fellow Sonnelian side United Pink States with the same scoreline as the gli attaccanti. Every matchday is vital and especially more vital than the last, so gli attaccanti will be heading with full force and a hunger to win and, to a lesser extent, try avenge the Sonnelian side for this.

The Arlington Moon-Tribune

Morten Troghil was hailed as a "triumphator" after Trolleborg won the 71st Baptism of Fire, but there was no need for high praise after his Trolls soundly defeated the Picksall Islands newcomers in Muralos. Both sides seemed to wobble between offensive and defensive approaches to the game, but Trolleborg had little trouble posting a shutout, with their goals from Torfinn Jivoglot and Finn Finnsnes. (Jivoglot was assisted by Morten Troll; yes, the Trolls' midfield star is actually named Troll. Some things you just can't make up!)

"Our players are competitors, so I don't want to mokhi them," Kim Higden said. "It would be patronizing to act like we never stood a chance. That being said, I'm proud of the way we were able to play our own game and remain resolute at the back. Hopefully this will give us all confidence in the games to come."

She may have a point; a 2-0 loss, while it may be disappointing, is less likely to shatter nerves than the 8-0 demolitions unleashed by Poafmersica and Omerica on North Alezia and Central Shaneville respectively. The latter is particularly poignant because blogdefootball.co.or tried to downplay their own strengths in response to a Central Shaneville news blurb about the Incorrigibles' strength. How, if at all, will Quetos San Rousvalais and James Penford bounce back from these showings? Then again, the Almuzahara half was a shutout-heavy one; every game ended with a win and loss, with only Squornshelous and Adab managing to score in defeat.

Sentence of the day:

Mōnamkadā paku dōnhādi?
Do you (all you people) live under bridges?

I asked this to some visiting Trolleborg fans and they looked at me like I was crazy, for some reason. When dōnhā- is used as a verb, it means "to translate" (as in, building a bridge between one language and another), which might be what I needed in that situation.

Boot It!: Jags Start Strong In New Era

Postby TJUN-ia » Sat Mar 27, 2021 10:51 am

By Peter Davis

Well then, here we are about to start the next era of TJUN-ian football. After all the speculation and everything else surrounding that decision by Jackson Levi-Holt, David Seems and Li Xiu Ying were about to take charge of their first game together as Co-Managers. No one really knows for sure how either of them took the decision by the FA-TJUN-ia to shift the balance at the top of the tree, but that doesn't matter now: we have some football to play. The city of Kuritibah, isolated from most of Almuzahara, isn't really the most welcoming to foreigners but the Moonlight Coliseum will be our home from home for the next few days as we play to reach another IAC knockout round.

First up in our first tournament of the new cycle was Montana Verde (pronounced Montaña), a new team on the block who called themselves the Condors and were led by a woman named Enriqueta. The Condors were listed as a highly-attacking team but it would be the Jags who would have most of the offence in this contest, generally outplaying their unranked opponents in most aspects of play throughout most of this game. The Condors were certainly a team who tried to create something despite their shortcomings and were certainly a team who could become something one day, but we were just the better team today and our 3 goals certainly showed that. Joe Green was the provider in the 34th, Vladimir Podolov was there in the 49th and Kepo Ulawaya managed to get there in the 78th, completing the list of the TJUN-ian Big 3 in style. 3-0, simple as that and a great start to the new era.

A good start, as I've already said, but the true tests were yet to come. The first one is up next as the great nation of Squidroidia comes to town, a nation that may even leave the IAC soon if they feel it isn't worth their time. Now, I don't have anything against the Squids or their new manager, but maybe the Jaguars needs to show them just how good the IAC can be. Running away from you problems ain,t gonna solve them. GO JAGS!

RED RADIO A-GO-GO
ITS JUST THE SAME OLD SHOW

Part 2/6: SS Golpearlos de Lado, Taaru Sea

There are migrant workers from Tequilo all over the known multiverse, and in many of the sixteen corners of the as-yet unknown multiverse, each with their little state-issued red radio. On board the privateer cruising barque of the Tamarindian Armada, the SS Golpearlos de Lado, Oier Pirola from the Tequiloan port city of Iparra, who had signed on with the Tamarindian merchant marine as soon as he was old enough, kept his in his hammock or took it with him for company on the middle watch.

Not long out of a rest stop at Puerto Farolero in Farfadillis, the 'Knockemsideways' - as the crew fondly called their impressive fluid time-powered Bonesea-built barque - was on patrol in the Taaru Sea, officially on a leisure cruise mapping reconnoitre for CisneLine but naturally, with Letters of Marque from the Tamarindian government, eager to spot, stop, plunder and scuttle any Aoan trader that had the misfortune to cross their path. At 03:55am, near the end of his watch, Oier was quietly celebrating Alexandro Calvoecheaga's second and Tequilo's third goal in the live IAC match being broadcast on the Tequilo World Service - it was the perfect start to the tournament. Oier's Tamarindian comrade Silvana Sosa, his relief watch officer, stood with a sardonic eyebrow raised as he bounced around the radar room pulling tight downward air fists and issuing hushed "si, si, si!" squeaks. "As you were, able seaman," she said, startling him out of his celebration. He held up his little red radio by way of explanation - "no action on the water, ma'am," he said, sheepishly, "but Los Pitxileros just nailed it!".

It was back in the Tequiloan human index boom of eighty to sixty years ago, Los Buenos Tiempos, when increasing skills and disposable income allowed many Tequiloa to begin to explore the multiverse on their own terms, either as paid migrant workers or as holidaymakers, when the governing party of the day issued a series of decrees and challenges to the effect that "wherever they go, whatever they are doing, let us not lose our countryfolk". It spawned the Department of International Contact, DCI, a branch of the government's Foreign Office, working closely with international intelligence and the diplomatic corps, to maintain a protecting arm around the diaspora who were spreading out into the world. One woman within the DCI, the eccentric amateur ham operator, Lidia 'Radio' Inurreta, proposed a radio set and the broadcast service, Servicio de Transmisión al Multiverso or more commonly the Tequilo World Service, to beam out to citizens everywhere who wanted to stay in contact with home. The leader of government, La Presidenta Gisela Plazaola, declared it incumbent upon state and individual to stay forever wed by this device over all the millions of kilometres and dimensions of the multiverse, come what may, until death parted them - and out of such lofty ideals the little red radio of Tequilo was born.

"Pitxi before privateering, is it, Señor Pirola?" asked Officer Sosa; as a Tamarindian, she knew all about the passion for football - the country practically invented the sport, or so they told everyone. "You're relieved, Oier, grab a grog from the galley, raise a shot to your countrymen - that Calvoecheaga plays like a Tamarindo, to be fair - and then get your head down. There's plundering to be done, you'll be busy soon enough!"

Player of the Match: Alexandro Calvoecheaga (Tequilo)

ALEXANDRO'S CAVALRY CHARGE
Two magnificent solo efforts by Alexandro Calvoecheaga and a player-of-the-match performance from the young forward won the headlines and the admirers in this solid victory over one of the much-fancied teams of the tournament, but the Fleftics played a part in their own downfall when tempers flared on the hour mark between keeper Bronwyn Churchill and Tequilo winger Tsttnauayui (pronounced zzz-annoy-you) who certainly seemed to annoy Bronwyn after they clashed in the box at a corner kick. The referee ordered a free kick to the keeper after Tsttnauayui was deemed to have impeded her, but the pair of them ended up bickering angrily, and both were booked for their effort. But for keeper Bronwyn, this was a second yellow following a booking for dissent in the first half, when she took issue with Ixtub Tün's seemingly offside goal. Tsttnauayui was withdrawn as a precaution, his temper also getting the better of him, but the quick action of coach Botín to get him straight off probably preventing more incidents later. With two yellows and her marching orders, Bronwyn Churchill was replaced by substitute keeper Deanna Herring, and Abanhfelft were down to ten women. There was no coming back from that, with the Fleftics already two goals down.

Alexandro had opened the scoring in the seventh minute, picking the ball up around the centre circle and weaving past a couple of defenders, finding some space for himself, and smashing a 20-metre rocket well out of reach of Churchill for a spectacular start. Ixtub Tün hit the second, mopping up from a scrambled corner and put through by winger Jaïr Iscla, with the Fleftic defense flatfooted and waving for offside. Bronwyn Churchill's second half dismissal ended any hope of a revival and Alexandro completed the rout with another solo late on, this time a mazy run into the box before sweeping past replacement keeper Herring.

Garbelia are next up having fallen to defeat in the first game and probably dangerous, knowing a second defeat will make qualification very difficult for them; coach Juan Manuel Botín will be forced into one change with José Tavia picking up a minor injury; Eura-based Emmanuel París will replace him, while Macedoni Altés is set to make his international debut to replace the rested Pedro Rôa up front alongside Alexandro Calvoecheaga.

Starting Strong
Salwan Mynhier; CONCEIÇÃO, Almuzahara

The Black-and-Reds got their latest IAC campaign, the third edition of this tournament that Anne-Sophie Groothuis will lead them into, off the ground with an good win. It was a strong performance against the champions of the 74th Baptism of Fire, Treekidistan. I personally am uncertain whether the nation was founded by a kid in a tree, or a particularly treelike kid, but regardless of their origins, they've proven pretty decent at playing football in their short time on the international stage. They were undefeated through the group stage on the "Fire League" half of their Baptism of Fire, before embarking on their run through the knockouts, culminating in a thrilling extra time victory over Bluecliff League in the final. They came back down to earth somewhat in World Cup 87 qualifying, coming in seventh in group 6.

Our venue for the match was the intimate confines of the Conceição National Sporting Center, located in its eponymous city in the tropical interior of the country. Conceição is a smallish city by local standards, and regarded as something of a backwater. I can definitely tell you there's been a bit of culture shock for the contingent of Confederate fans, and likely for the team as well. While women's rights have been improved under recent government, traditional Islamic values still prevail in many areas, particularly here in the southern interior. Accordingly, a large group from a majority non-religious, decidedly socially progressive nation suddenly arriving in town following a football team nearly three quarters of whom are women probably came as something of a shock for locals as well. The government had issued a travel advisory to fans after the group stage venues and draw were announced. Confederates were advised to keep public drinking and other revelry to a minimum, and to generally avoid trampling too much on the hospitality of our hosts. It is all but certain at least a few Black-and-Reds supporters will disregard that counsel, but hopefully conflict between tourists and locals can be kept to a minimum. One thing we can at least hopefully agree on is socially progressive economic policies.

As for the match itself, it was an excellent, if not quite perfect, display of possession-based attacking football. The Black-and-Reds lines up with Krieven in net, both Harkhans, Baste and Storsjo arrayed in front of him. The midfield was arrayed with Takala forward, Hashemi and Marrish further back, with Naqvi and Starosta wide. Petrov, of course, was the point of the spear. They were on the front foot practically from the word go, taking control from the opening kickoff and filtering forward through the midfield with crisp passing and off-the-ball movement. Clearly Groothuis had spent plenty of time in training working on attacking flow and anticipation. It wasn't long before the first shot of the match came from the bot of Starosta. It was high and wide, but a portent of things to come, as Henmann would be under siege for most of the first half. Petrov eventually broke through with a chest trap and turn while shielding the ball from Ahmed. Though the Treekid keeper made a number of important, even heroic saves, it certainly looked like only a matter of time before the Black-and-Reds struck again, pouring on the pressure as they were. Just when it appeared Treekidistan might escape to the locker room only down one, Naqvi picked up the ball near their corner flag and began making her way toward goal, stopping and starting, she juked first Helmut, then Schneider. Her shot appeared to come from a nearly impossible angle, and she put it the only place she could: into the roof of the net at the near post.

Treekidistan did manage to make things interesting, pulling within one goal on a strong shot from Pyarelal, who was set up at the edge of the box by a well-timed layoff from Johnson. It was too little too late in the end though, as the Black-and-Reds tightened their control on possession. Groothuis sent Hagaz on for Takala, with Hashemi shifting slightly forward to fill the gap up front. They slowed the pace of the match to a crawl, pulling the increasingly desperate Treekid players out of their defensive shape until eventually Hashemi found herself in a huge amount of space just 20 yards from goal, and delivered a perfect shot to the top corner.

Up next for the Black-and-Reds, it's the Empire of Britland Isles, who sit tied for third after their one-all draw with Quintessence of Dust. The Britlandish FA has yet to release an official roster, which might hamper preparation for the match slightly, having only the game tape from matchday one to go on. The Black-and-Reds will have the slight advantage of familiar ground though, as the match will once again take place here in Conceição.
