Somewhere in the Luck of Jirachi
World Baseball Classic 51 Series 6: Hapilopper v. the Church of the Luck of Jirachi
And yet again, another series had passed where the Hap Thrashers had clearly gotten the better of their opponents. The Haps were, at this point, the best baseball team in the World Baseball Classic, having gone 17-1, and with Ethane getting the better of Cassadaigua during their series, the Haps were all by themselves with the best record in the World Baseball Classic. When one watched the Hap Thrashers, it was evident why. The team was playing to a whole new level. The pitchers were getting the outs they needed. Hitters were getting the shots they were looking for and running like mad on the bases. The Hapiloppian brand of baseball – that balls-to-the-wall, all-out, style of baseball, was clearly winning out.

In the first game, Hot Sauce Gibbs put on that kind of performance that everyone expected of him. No runs, four hits, one walk and sixteen strikeouts in a complete game shutout. Nobody from the Alma-Ata Clerical Institute could get past second base as Hot Sauce and the Hap defense were on the top of their game. Meanwhile, the Haps got on the board with the assistance of some shrewd basehitting from Jerome Hayden, who didn’t hit one out of the park in the first game, but instead brought Terry Blanchard and Dayton Rowe home with a two-out double to center field. The next inning, Grant Bonney roped a line drive over the left-field fence – not a high or a deep ball by any means, but enough for the Haps to pull out to a 3-0 lead.

In game two, Vic Foster got out some of his tools of the trade, inspired by a recent incident in the team hotel when Randall Pemberton “borrowed” a bottle of Hot Sauce Gibbs’ “The Hot Sauce’s Hot Sauce” to pour in a large pot of chili being fixed for members of the pitching staff. When the pitchers realized their chili had been ruined, the team looked for the culprit, and other players almost instantly stooged Pemberton off. But rather than kicking his ass, Vic called the hounds off, and asked for the bottle of hot sauce.

“I want to see how this works on a baseball,” Vic said.

And it almost worked, until the fifth inning, when Vic actually forgot he was handling some ultra-hot sauce. As center fielder Josiah Talyev fouled off a 2-2 pitch, Vic lazily looked towards the dugout, then moved up to rub his left eye. It wasn’t until it was too late that Vic realized his eye was slathered with ultra-hot sauce, and within seconds, he was in a world of hurt. Vic spiked the ball down on the mound, accidentally drawing a balk, sending Sergei Tilekov to second base. Vic didn’t care. He had accidentally introduced his left eye to the magical world of a hot sauce rated at around 15,000 Scoville units, and was in a world of hurt. Trainers rushed out to the mound to take Vic out of the game, and Martin Meadows was brought in on short notice to pitch a few innings.

Vic was brought back to the trainer’s room, where his eye was flushed out. Even still, he was screaming in pain, so much so that Dale Moss went back to see what was going on at almost the very moment Talyev hit a two-run home run to right field.

“What the hell did you do?!” Dale asked his pitcher.

“I think I rubbed my eye with hot sauce,” Vic said.

“Why’d you do that?” Dale asked.

“I don’t know, why am I an idiot?” Vic replied.

“Beats me. Either way, don’t use hot sauce again,” Dale said. “I imagine it’s a great tool to use but it’s unsafe. Don’t use it again.”

So it came as no surprise the next morning when the National League of Hapilopper announced a list of banned substances to use on baseballs. Bodily fluids were already forbidden (for obvious reasons) as were bull excrement (for a reason related to an incident a few years ago where Vic’s “bullshit” pitch got its name), and now hot sauce had been added to that list.

In game three, the Haps took another victory, putting them 17-1 and well ahead of Daskel, the only team in the group to have beaten the Thrashers at any point. The third win came through longballs. Terry Blanchard hit one in the first. Jerome Hayden hit a tape-measure shot in the second. Grady Elliott hit one in the fourth. Jerome Hayden hit another one in the fifth, and in classic Jerome fashion.

You’ve heard this story before. Jerome saw a pitch he liked and hammered the hell out of it. He knew it was gone and stood at home plate, watching his handiwork. A huge smile came over his face and he shook his head as he slowly trotted around the bases, making a strange arm gesture along the bases before stopping at home plate and planting his right foot on the base.

The next series would bring the Haps home to Capital Stadium to take on the Tigers from Super-Llamaland, a team the Haps felt was much better than their 9-9 record would indicate. In fact, manager Dale Moss said the Tigers could be a real spoiler in the three-game series.

“Yeah, we swept them over there, but that was one series,” Dale said. “Super-Llamaland is a good baseball team. Isaac Oladipo is a good manager. He’s got some real good ballplayers on that team, and we’re going to need to be at our best if we’re going to have a repeat of that last series we had against them. If we can do that, we’ll be lucky as hell, to say the least. That team should be running up with us, not running at 9-9. Simple as that.”

Game 1: Miles Savey goes a complete game - securing his second win of the tournament so far.

Game 2: A back and forth affair with Jason Duster coming up on the clutch with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Joseph Edward, Jr. and Hine Salle did the rest.

Game 3: Despite the Amateurs getting a two-run homer early from Moyamoto, they were not able to stay ahead for too long after de Witt had to leave in the sixth due to a hamstring injury. Ollie Bier filled in and immediately gave up a two-run shot; thankfully, Salle and Edward, Jr. did the rest.

Chromatika ends the half in second place behind surprising Bardney and barely ahead of Sherpa Empire; their first match of the return leg will be against said Bardney. Angelou, Augustine, and Savey will start.

Le Choix @ The Hannasean Federation

Game 1: A three-run sixth propelled The Chosen to a rather comfortable victory. Maxence Soler hit the two-run homer to accentuate.

Game 2: Though Tom Pinto got them the lead, Joshua John's three-run homer did it for the Hannasean Federation.

Game 3: A very interesting last few innings, with many lead changes. Ultimately, Baudin's fly-out got Soler scored and Moreau got the save.

Pitchers vs. Ethane: RHP Josée Lahaye, RHP Luc Boutroux, LHP Éloïse Lebas

Trente Jours en Enfer (Thirty Days in Hell)
Prologue 2: Comment ce livre est-il utilisé (Prologue 2: How this book is used)

Thirty Days in Hell remains the only eyewitness account of anyone who's come through The Portal that could be taken down in full before their minds gave out. It's not clear what causes people's minds to give out once they leave The Portal; that just remains the case. La Reine Rouge and the leadership of The Chosen have deemed it... Divine intervention. The weakening of minds meant they were easier to be rewritten. So, the weak perished, the strong survived, and then as their minds died, they got rewritten to become obedient drones for The Chosen.

Thirty Days in Hell, then, is an invaluable asset to The Chosen for two very different reasons. First, it gives the leadership of The Chosen the chance to look at the psyche of the survivor; what they used to survive, whom they met, etc. Second, it gives the leadership of The Chosen propaganda to distribute by changing it to say exactly what they want to; and as someone who did survive, Dannielle Thoreau's word rang true.

It became an instant bestseller. The people of The Chosen were always looking for something new to sink their teeth on.

The Theocracy has been trying to get the next book the likes of Trente Jours en Enfer since.

---------- thought it had discovered a clever loophole in the rules of baseball. In fact, the autonomous earth mover thought it was going to revolutionize the game. It was wrong.

It was a long ride from the pasture where -------- had parked to the ballpark where the 189 were going to play their next series. The ship was quite large, and she could not find enough open space to park in the city center -- at least not if she wanted to do it safely without landing on someone's head or incinerating a random passerby. This meant ---------- had plenty of time to flicker its screens about how it had just discovered the secret to WBC domination, and ----- and -------- had plenty of time to explain why this was not so. The little robotic manager and the glorified ATM patiently explained that intentionally stepping into the path of the ball was not the same thing as getting hit by a bad pitch, and you could not get a free pass to first base by stepping in front of a pitch.

---------- was still skeptical. After a while ----- gave up trying to correct the earth mover's misunderstanding of the rules and simply ordered it not to roll in front of pitches.

On the field, the 189 and the Rockets appeared more evenly matched than you might expect. The Rockets were favored to win the series, and sure enough they did, but there was enough back and forth to keep things interesting. There were no blowouts and all three games were hotly contested down to the last at bat. The Rockets won games 1 and 2, while the 189 pulled off an upset with some 9th inning heroics from -------- and ---------- in game 3.

The 189 were now 2nd in their group, only behind Newmanistan, and they felt like that was a respectable place to be. They didn't think it was embarrassing to be behind the Rockets; they thought the Rockets were just very good.

Batter UP!: Short-ish Summaries (@HUElavia)

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Apr 06, 2021 9:06 am

Game 1: TJUN-ia (9) 8-1 HUElavia (29) (TJU lead series 1-0)
The 2nd road series in a row would be our first rematch of this WBC as the Battin' Jags played visitors to 8-7 HUElavia. Just like in Portside, it was Chris Harris kicking things off against Taro Tsukiyomi this time around, but in this series opener, things would certainly turn out differently. The opening 3 innings were tight enough to kick things off, with both teams getting a single run for their efforts: a nice run in by Pedro Moires in the 1st and a 3rd-inning solo bomb by Naomí Manzanedo. But once the 4th arrived, this game would only be headed in one direction as the Battin' Jags turned the hell up in style. Two-run bombs in back-to-back innings (by Bryce Calhoun and Harris respectively) would see Tsukiyomi replaced by Riho Kikyo on the mound, only for her to give up a 2-run bomb to Joe Gregory in the 7th. It would be cruise control from there on out, as TJUN-ia got the ball rolling in this series.

Game 2: TJUN-ia (9) 2-6 HUElavia (29) (Series tied 1-1)
Davis Johnson and Léa Bittencourt would start the 2nd game, where this one would basically be decided by the end of the 2nd inning. Miliano Villa would get this one rolling with a solo first-inning bomb and the 2nd would be even better for the hosts, Beatriz Porras' Grand Slam and the immediate solo bomb after that by Bittencourt sending Johnson off the mound in exchange for Harrison Kyle. Kyle would help steady the ship for the rest of the contest but no matter what TJUN-ia did, they wouldn't be able to overturn that disadvantage. The series was tied 1-all after this game was decided after 2.

Game 3: TJUN-ia (9) 5-2 HUElavia (29) (TJU won series 2-1)
With the series tied, Gene Almac vs Adrienne Esso would decide this one and this game would certainly be all about the beginning and the end. In the beginning, and most of this game, things would be slow and steady with the homer proving to be the only way both sides were going to do anything to the scoreboard. The hosts would, once again, get the better start with a solo bomb by Maura Araoz in the 2nd inning before both Bryce Calhoun and Koji Akiba hit bombs of their won to make it a 2-1 ballgame. After that, it would be a tense affair as TJUN-ia tried to get themselves back into this contest while HUElavia countered almost everything the Jags could throw at them...until the 9th inning that is. Ki Yung-son would be the one who decided this one in the end, his Grand Slam ending up uncounterable as TJUN-ia won this tight game and the whole series just like that. Up next is Karditan at Big Island Field and with everything still looking good, this one is gonna be fun. GO JAGS!

Krauts Struggling as Promising Season is Hindered By Mistakes and the Injury Bug
ImageKrauts star Leonardo Harrison has missed four games in this Classic run, and he isn't the only one

At 7-11 - presumably 7-14 after what's about to happen when Newmanistan visits the Cardinal Auditorium - Ranoria would need to pull off something even crazier than a season ago if they were to actually make something of this season. A 9-1 stretch last go round was enough to get into the knockout stages, but we'd all be thoroughly surprised if we could manage a nice 19-11 finish like we did in that historic edition. With one of our only winning series coming recently against Pluvie, Ranoria seems to be sinking back into the mediocrity, or just poor play, that many expect of us outside the worlds of gridiron and fighting.

Let's be honest too though: We've had plenty of the injury bug coming to town. Leonardo Harrison himself has been struggling with his elbow and shoulder throughout this Classic, and has missed several games as a result. Nicholas Lux has been available and healthy, but some role players like Judas Acker or Jesse Griffith haven't been. Those two alone have missed a combined ten contests, which compounds with Griffith's uneven play to produce a good few unfavorable results. While the kid's talented, and improved over a year ago, he isn't good enough to play at an elite level consistently when healthy, much less when hurt.

With his injuries, Leonardo Harrison hasn't been the reliable star we've all come to know and love. He's been batting well still, at around a mark of .275, but his big home run numbers are nowhere to be found, as he has just one so far on the season. With his being hampered, the Krauts have lost their star and their leader. Fortunately, Nicholas Lux has stayed his consistently effective self, if still unable to quite match Harrison at his peak. Without Jesse Griffith being available as an x factor who can occasionally flash that kind of potential, it's really hindered our scoring ability.

Worse yet, the new pitchers Ranoria's brought in have been, for the most part, awful. While it was a necessity to bring in more pitchers following last season's small stable, it's hurt when lesser players can't live up to the ability of guys like Tommy Verona, Erik Schmidt, or Parker Majors. (You lot will remember Schmidt, who had a run in with Tha Great Pond's team of sentient ducks to results that did not end in his favor)

Regardless of the injuries and other struggles, the team has to find a way to turn things around. We have favorable matchups against The 189 and Mapletish coming up next on the schedule, both of which should potentially end in sweeps if our results last season are anything to go off of. And from where we're currently sitting in the group, every win is pivotal. Those alone could send the Krauts, who are currently projected to roll out everyone but aging Wolfram von Kuhn in their next game, up a few spots in the group's rankings.

After that, unfortunately, We've got to deal with Abanhfleft, ranked 15th in the world, coming to town, and we can't imagine that's going to play out well for us. With all that said, we're projecting a surge in our next three series, and our Krauts finishing that slate up at 7-2 to get us up to a more respectable record, assuming the Rockets sweep us, which is a pretty solid bet. It won't be enough to win the group, or to even come close with Newmanistan on the throne above, but it might just be enough to get us back into the running for knockout stages.

Well, you all know the drill...

Go Krauts! Perhaps a little less enthusiastically, this time around.

50 at 50: First basemen

Jonathan McGillivray-Smith, Staff Writer

During WBC 51, to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of Nova Anglicana's participation in the WBC, we'll be counting down the best 50 players in Nova Anglican baseball history. We started with catchers, and now we're moving on to first basemen. Trust me, it was really hard to pick between the top two first basemen. Would you believe there have only been four true first basemen in Nova Anglican history?

First team first baseman

Jake Bryan: WBC 42-50

I know that for a large section of Nova Anglican baseball fans, this is heresy. Especially for the older generation, Kareem Al-Aniz is the only Nova Anglican first baseman who deserves a spot on the first team. But after much debate, we're giving the edge to Jake Bryan. Not only was Bryan a starter for longer, but he also won a championship and was a better all-around player. Bryan came up in WBC 42 as a 22 year-old phenom who was already challenging for the MVP award and he did it all. His defense constantly rated as top-3 in the league at first, he was a perennial .300 hitter, and he was good for 30 bombs a year. Maybe you could make an argument that he didn't hit as many homers as you would have liked, but you know what? Give me 32 homers and a .306 batting average over 52 homers and a .246 batting average any day. Bryan played an undeniable role in delivering the Lions to their first championship in WBC 48 as well. Who could forget his walk-off homer in the 11th inning of Game 6? Or his go-ahead homer in the 11th inning of Game 7? The man was a clutch hitting machine. He couldn't do it by himself in WBC 50 in the rematch with Cassadaigua, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Jake is an all-around excellent player who contributed to the Lions' successes in many ways. Maybe it's recency bias, but we don't think so. Jake Bryan is our all-time best Nova Anglican first baseman.

Second team first baseman

Kareem Al-Aniz: WBC 27-32

Now let's talk about Kareem Al-Aniz. This Sunni Muslim, the big black man with the big black beard and the big black bat, was the first-ever Nova Anglican first baseman to take the field. And boy did he put on a show whenever he stepped onto the field. He's the career leader in splash hits into Londinium Harbour and the career leader for 450+ foot home runs in Nova Anglican national team history. Everywhere you looked, it seemed like he was hitting bombs. And his offense was a huge part of why Nova Anglicana exploded onto the multiversal baseball scene in WBC 27 and beyond. He wasn't always the most agile on the basepaths, or the best defender at first, but he worked hard so that those facets of his game didn't drag him down. And he wasn't a one-dimensional player, either. Despite that fact that he routinely hit 40-50 home runs a season and several more in each international competition, his career batting average both domestically and internationally is over .275, so he wasn't just swinging for the fences, strikeouts be damned. If the shift had been more prominent in his time, perhaps he would not have hit as well, but then again, Al-Aniz was a world-class talent, so he probably would have adapted, even if he wasn't going to be dropping down many bunts. A strong, silent leader of Nova Anglicana's first WBC generation, Al-Aniz won the hearts of many Nova Anglican baseball fans and he will always be remembered fondly.

Honorable Mention

Brooks Colvin: WBC 33-37

He had a really tough job, stepping into Kareem Al-Aniz's shoes. And Colvin was a very different player from Al-Aniz. Right-handed where Al-Aniz was a lefty, he hit doubles while Kareem hit bombs. Al-Aniz was never known for his stellar defense, while Colvin's defense provided a good amount of his value. But he carried the torch forward. Even though his era's only real success was finishing 3rd in WBC 36, he stepped up to the plate and did what needed to be done. As a right-right first baseman, Colvin likely faced a lot of prejudice and had to overcome projections and naysayers all along the way, so to play in five Classics as the national team starter when many thought he might not even be a major league first baseman is worthy of inclusion all on its own. But he provided leadership and defense, as well as a strong if not overly powerful bat, and that's valuable.

Anthony Brooks: WBC 38-41

The guy with the shortest tenure, Brooks is often overlooked. He wasn't the highest-ceiling player, nor was he the biggest power hitter. But he was a leader. A right-right first baseman in the mold of Colvin, he took the Lions to a 4th place and a 2nd place finish in his first two Classics as a starter. He also was a career .297 hitter and once stole 11 bases, a real feat for a first baseman. He was also a stellar defender, just like Bryan, and while he didn't ever hit 30 homers in a season, he was good for 15-20 and a bunch of RBI as well. We can't overlook him just because he's the least impressive of the first baseman.

Verdict

It's one of the most stable positions in Nova Anglican history, with just four guys having manned the position over 20+ Classics. It's very top-heavy, with Bryan and Al-Aniz being well ahead of Colvin and Brooks, but you have to give the guys honorable mention at least. It would have been easy for the Lions to have rotated first basemen every or every other Classic between Al-Aniz and Bryan, but Colvin and Brooks took hold of the position and wouldn't let go. You admire the pure star power of Bryan and Al-Aniz, and you admire the tenacity and perserverance of Colvin and Brooks.

Chengdu Pandas manager Chiri Zeng was enjoying some hot and sour soup and a baseball game on TV. In the game, Weiyun Gan was absolutely dominating the Hicañans. In the back of his mind, Zeng was sort of concerned about some of the things he'd heard in the news recently, especially now that his star first baseman Xiao Wen was in hot water -- but the spicy soup and the WBC game were a nice way to take his mind off it. The play-by-play was being narrated in a Nepalese accent that Zeng rarely heard on the street, but everyone was accustomed to hearing on SISN broadcasts.

Zeng's phone rang and he glanced at the caller ID. He frowned. It was Xiao Wen.

He answered the phone in Chinese: "Wei, Chiri."

"I assume you've heard what's going on?" Wen asked in Sherpa without any sort of preamble or greetings.

"Yeah, I've heard."

"You told me I wouldn't get caught!" Wen said.

Zeng's frown deepened. He wished he could reach through the phone and punch Wen. What was he thinking putting everything right out in the open like this after calling from his own phone? Had it never crossed his mind that he was under investigation and his calls could be monitored?

"I don't know what you're talking about," Zeng lied.

Unsurprisingly, Wen flew off the handle. "WHAT!!! DON'T PLAY DUMB WITH ME!!! YOU TOLD ME I WOULDN'T GET CAUGHT!!!"

"Let me call you back," Zeng said, and he hung up.

And now it was Wen's turn to wish he could reach through his phone and punch someone. He stared at the screen in disbelief, confused and angry. He felt like he'd been betrayed. He reached for the button to redial Zeng's number, but before he could press it a call came in from a number he didn't recognize. He usually didn't answer calls from unfamiliar numbers, but something told him he should answer this one.

"Hello?"

"Wei, Chiri. What do you think you're doing calling me from your own phone? You'll get us both in trouble talking like that on your own phone!"

"Are you shitting me?" Wen demanded. "You expect me to sneak around using fake phones like I'm in the mafia or something?"

"You're under investigation. Someone could record your calls."

"Fuck you, Zeng!" said Wen. "You told me I wouldn't get caught! Get me out of this or I'm telling them everything!"

Newmanistan Gets The Last Laugh, But Krauts Steal Two Games of Three
From Juggernaut Rockets

Image
Leonardo Harrison was feeling himself after hitting his second home run of the series in the second game of the series

By Nancy Mennard

Even the most controversial of talking heads were only giving the Krauts a chance - a chance - for one win in their second bout with Newmanistan. Fortunately, the Cardinal Auditorium appears to be more of a fortress than we once thought. Our Krauts came out with 8 runs between the 6th and 7th innings in the first matchup to take their first lead against the Rockets, a surge that would be just enough to bring them a win when their tormentors nearly came back in the late stages. The first two of those runs were knocked in off of a Leonardo Harrison homer, which kickstarted the entire thing.

With that insane day at their backs, Jesse Griffith would score first in the second inning of game two, before Harrison took to the plate again in the third inning and hit a second home run in this series, tripling his count of balls knocked out of the park in this Classic in a very short span. Nicholas Lux was a benefactor of that hit, as he scored off both of the Krauts star's big hits.

After the second win became safe, Cardinal Auditorium was going as wild as one can expect from a field with a capacity of just over 22,000. The game would end in a lopsided, and perhaps misleading, 10-2 victory for Ranoria's struggling ball club, but no one was going to tell them that. This series was supposed to get us to 14 losses, and with two wins that was already far out of the picture. Harrison looked as sharp and healthy as he had all year, Jesse Griffith and Judas Acker were both moving unhindered, it was great.

And then reality came crashing down.

Fully healthy or not, we weren't sweeping arguably the best team in baseball this side of Cassadaigua. After taking an early 4-0 lead and looking to set up another blowout, the Rockets pitching group figured it out and mowed through the Krauts batters like they were annoyed to even be there. Newmanistan would come back hard, ending the day with a 7-4 score in their favor. But don't let that dampen your spirits!

The Rockets have swept our Krauts twice now. Once in the second round of WBC 50's knockout stages, and once earlier in this very WBC 51. Coming up and shocking the world to knock them down a peg - two pegs really - is a feat any team would be proud of, much less a hopeful up and comer like our own. And guess what? After some early injury struggles, the team looks as healthy as they have all season. We've got very winnable games in the next two series to really go out and turn this Classic around in a tight group.

Our squad isn't out of this yet. Harrison and crew just showed us they've got plenty of fight left in them, so make sure you support them every step of the way! Go Krauts!

INT. ANONYMOUS BOARDROOM, LLAMANEAN BASEBALL ASSOCIATION HQ

After falling to 4-8 against The Luck of Jirachi, LBA President TROY VASQUEZ and his team, have met up to discuss changes in ROSTER and STRATEGY for the final eighteen matches of the group stage. The weight of the situation clearly is a burden on all of the LBA team’s shoulders - a swift turnaround will be needed just to qualify for the Round of 32, let alone make the kind of deep playoff run that the nation has been expecting ever since their WBC49 comeback. On the phone from a hotel room in HAPILOPPER are ISAAC and ALASAN.

TROY: I understand where you’re coming from, Isaac. It’s been a brutal start to the WBC, so we’re more than willing to make changes if you think they’re necessary. That being said, aren’t you worried some of these changes are a bit much?

CUTS TO: HOTEL ROOM, HAPILOPPER CITY

ISAAC is confidently leaning back on his hotel room sofa, looking out toward the banks of the West River from his window, a phone up to his ear. ALASAN is nearby, sitting on the bed.

ISAAC: If anything, this slow start has shown me that we need to double down. Alasan and I were really compromising before this WBC on how many changes we actually needed to make, and I don’t think we did enough to overhaul the roster as a result. I think getting a platoon outfielder at left, maybe another bat to split time at first, and a new late-game reliever in could really help us out here. (he listens to Troy’s response over the phone, then nods)

ISAAC (to ALASAN): He’s asking what bats we want.

ALASAN: Gunnlaugson? How about Gunnlaugson.

ISAAC: We want Gunnlaugson called up. We can drop Werner or Rentería to make room. (he listens again, then turns to Alasan.) They don’t know if Gunnlaugson will accept the callup. City of Dinschria doesn’t want the injury risk, and word is he’s about to be called up for his first LBL appearance.

ALASAN: Get me his GM’s phone number. I’ll look into it.

ISAAC: Alasan wants to talk to Dinschria about it. Can you...alright. (he tilts his phone over to Alasan, who copies down the number on it before walking over to the other side of the room to try to convince them to let Gunnlaugson go.)

CUT TO: SPLIT SCREEN BETWEEN ISAAC AND TROY

ISAAC: Right, so Gunnlaugson would start in left against righties, Long against lefties - he’s an option in right field, too, by the way - and then Will Rentería would be the defensive replacement.

TROY (after an intense discusison with his aides): You’re dropping Werner? We’re worried the outfield is looking a little imbalanced. Long and Gunnlaugson are both slugging types, Scutaro and Rentería are more there for speed and defensive instead of on-base ability, Mikkelson-Yao’s more of an athlete as well. There isn’t enough on-base potential there, don’t you think?

ISAAC: Ivy Werner has a .250 OBP this Classic. If anything, this will help our offense. some of the aides actively roll their eyes or scoff at the line.

TROY: ...she’s two for eight, Isaac. You can’t really base anything off of that. Besides, Tyson-

ISAAC: Look, you brought me in to win WBCs. You need bats for that. We can’t keep doing all this “walks and doubles” bullshit if we want to compete. It’s not a valid strategy on the international level anymore.

TROY: ...fine. If you can convince Gunnlaugson and his team to accept a callup, we’ll drop Werner.

ISAAC: Perfect, thanks. (He walks over to Alasan, giving him a thumbs-up sign. Alasan nods tersely before briefly putting his phone down.)

ALASAN: He says he’ll let Gunnlaugson go for the WBC group stage, but only if we give him Sam Vandenberg back.

ISAAC: Perfect. Don’t want her anyways.

ALASAN: Isaac, she’s our best reliever. She hasn’t blown a single save so far-

ISAAC: We’re cleaning house. Sam’s gotta go, so you can tell the GM we’ll do it.

ALASAN: Fine. But you’re still going to have to convince Gunnlaugson to accept the callup.

ISAAC: One sec before I do that. (He walks back to the sofa and sits down again.) Right, Troy. We’re also going to have to let Sam Vandenberg go. I trust your analytics guys will be fine with that one anyways, but we’re going to be looking for a closer type. I was thinking we would promote Kennedy for the job.

TROY: Sure, Schumacher seems like a good fit. Who do you want to call up, though?

ISAAC: Nobody.

TROY: Nobody?

ISAAC: If anything, we still have too many relievers. What the hell do we need ten relievers for? I was going to get another bat with the open roster spot, maybe someone to fill in at the corners since we’ve got Rosario and Hart for the middle infield spots.

TROY: It’s a pretty long tournament. And besides, you’ll need more relievers for the playoffs.

ISAAC: Not with my starters, I won’t. (he thinks, then realizes something). Actually, if you want more relievers, I’ll get you a new reliever. I’m going to switch to a four man rotation in the second half of the season, dropping Wladecki to the bullpen.

TROY: You can’t switch this early! Their arms can’t handle it.

ISAAC: Trust me, they absolutely can. Now that they’re pitching real starts, they’ll have the energy to do it.

TROY: ...they’ll have more energy because they pitch for longer?

ISAAC: Sounds like somebody was never a starter. Anyways, I was hoping to bring in Alana Gonzalez with the last spot. Get another bat there.

TROY: Fine. But you’ll still need Gunnlaugson released before any of this other shit-

ISAAC: Perfect. Have a nice night. (he hangs up. Alasan comes back over.)

ALASAN: I think he was going to add something else there, Isaac.

ISAAC: Alasan, rule number one: When you get the answer you're looking for, hang up.

ALASAN: Do we have Gunnlaugson?
ISAAC: Yeah, if you got City of Dinschria’s okay, the LBA will talk to him. I think we’re good to go. (they high five.)

ALASAN: This is going to be a sensational season.

ISAAC: Oh, one more thing - they want you to tell Ivy Werner that she’s off the team.

ALASAN: What? Why me?

ISAAC: Someone’s got to do it.

Baseball, notoriously a sport in which the better team doesn't always win, usually has teams over a 60% win percentage as a contender and then some. Win seventy percent of your games and you're among the all-time best teams in a league. Sure, the Classic is a little more top-heavy with the good teams getting wins quite easily over the weaker teams (but not always), but even here, group leaders are just a little over 67% winning. We're exactly at 66.666% recurring. Cassadaigua, the only team that has already qualified to the finals (on the back of a competitive group of 8-13 teams at third place and lower), is 18-3 for a percentage of 86 - that's insane.

What matters for us is to stay ahead of South Americanastan, the surprise revelations out of Group 5, behind which are three more teams that are all better than group 3's mix of 8-win teams. The Greater Nordics, 12 wins, yet stuck in third. Kriegiersien, 10 wins, in fourth. Even Xanneria, fifth place and undoubtedly doing worse than they'd hoped, are 9-12 and just a little below .500. The Dragonflies are 14-7, or a perfect representation of going 2-1 in all your series. Sure, the team has swept a few series, but also landed some 1-2 results against teams that are challenging us for second place. Unlike some other teams that currently lead their group, we can't expect to go 3-0 in any series. All we can rely on is our rivals also not going 3-0 in any series - which so far, thankfully, they haven't. While the Dragonflies went 2-1 over the Greater Nordics, keeping them at bay in third, South Americanastan went 1-2 to Xanneria, truly a group where any team can beat any other team. For the Ko-orenites, it was a much more relaxed series than the previous. All games were over after nine innings, so no having to spread yourself thin on extra innings. The first game decidedly went to our opponents, winning 5-1 as our only run came late in the ninth. The other games were close, with the second game going into the final inning 6-6, but Girard bat in both Makkinga and Himura for two final runs at 6-8. The Greater Nordics got an early 5-2 lead that was only erased after a three-run seventh inning of our own. Game three was even closer, but saw our opponents fall short 4-5, with no runs scored in the final inning to comeback - and so we didn't have to play our ninth inning. That was all much more comfortable than the previous series, where all three games versus South Americanastan, the team in second no less, went to extras. The first was 8-8 in the ninth (8-7 after the eighth, with the Stans tying it up late) - and then a home run with the bases loaded in the eleventh inning gave them the win. The second game was ours, again after eleven innings, but this time it was us who came back late to draw out the game and score the only extra inning runs to boot. Game three was... well, eleven innings again, but a much more low scoring affair. Squidroidia and the Greater Nordics played 12 innings in the same round, so it could always be worse.

Three series to go, versus Squidroidia, Kriegiersien, and Xanneria. At least we escape the on-form Americanastani and the highly ranked Nordics. On the bad side, only the Xannerian series will be played at home - three games at the Katashi Dome. We only have a two-win lead, so we still need to go 2-1 in every series to realistically stay ahead of the rest. A 3-0 in any series will probably keep us at first place in the group. At this point, we don't have to compare us to the 16+ win sides in the other groups: all that matters it to stay ahead of the competition that we have to deal with.

Baseball is in a bit of a lull in the archipelago, after travel restrictions put in place by the Yoshiman regional government as a protest towards policy from the national government cut short the season. The rivalry between Finisterre players and Yoshima players is also at a slight dip, as the Yoshiman players outnumber the Finisterrans 2:1 but it's the Finisterran teams that run away with the competition. Not one team from Yoshima made it to the top three last year: the #2 v #3 preliminary final series was between two recently moved teams on the mainland, the Admirals and the Wanderers, which had by far the lowest viewership for any postseason baseball in two decades. Baseball just isn't on the radar of the folks over at Intermare and Aminey yet, and the sport's heartland had no team to cheer on. The final was Finisterre's Santa Teresa versus Aminey Wanderers, ending in a 4-1 Santa Teresa win. It's great if the mainland keeps doing well for the sport's and the league's growth, let alone recruitment numbers in the youth and amateur departments, but so far all it's done is to wreak havoc in involvement in the traditional homeland.

There are no problems yet, but the increased rivalries, entertainment and production values, and closer games saw rugby league rise to unprecedented heights in terms of popularity in the two regions. Both sports are contested in different seasons so baseball isn't in any danger, but it's surprising how the two sports traded places on the popularity lists so quickly. Soccer is also particularly strong in both regions - but soccer is king across Ko-oren so there's no new threat coming in from there.

NOTE: The following is loosely inspired by the game Bush Hockey League

SABaseball: Beer Money

Micheal Kelly sat in his office, yet again. He watched as the final corporate representative walked out. It had been a long day of negotiating, and many companies had made their bid for the naming rights to South Americanastan's baseball team. He looked at the offers he had been given, all of them were long, filled with barely understandable legalese and other useless clauses. But only one thing mattered, the figure at the top of the page. Each contract had a different amount of money, but all of them seemed to fall short of what was needed. He looked his notes.

AMOUNT NEEDED: 125,000 $ MINIMUM. REACH ORIGINAL BUDGET: 200,000 $

Gale Force Arms Co. Proposed Name: Gunners. Amount: 100,000 $

Halifax Industrial. Proposed Name: Factory. Amount: 35,000 $

J.D and Sons Construction. Proposed Name: Construction. Amount: 45,000 $

D-Mart Grocery Inc. Proposed Name: Grocers. Amount: 69,000 $

Macro Tech Co. Proposed Name: Macros. Amount: 90,000 $

Northeastern Airlines. Proposed Name: Pilots. Amount: 87,000 $

Nothing. He looked at the last offer.

Hinto Brewery Co. Proposed Name: Hinto Brews. Amount 150,000 $

"How fucking ironic" Kelly mumbled to himself. The team had been taken down by beer, and now it was going to save nearly the entire team. He walked from his office into the conference room, where the other coaches were waiting to hear the results of the negotiations.

"Well, did you get any offers?" Harry Dalton, the man who had suggested the plan in the first place, asked.

"I got a few, but only one is viable. The Hinto Brewery Co. is willing to offer us 150,000 Bucks to change our team name to 'The Hinto Brews' What do you think?" Micheal asked.

"I'm fine with it" Dalton replied

"Meh, I'm not sure about naming our team after a goddamn beer brand, but, it's your call, Mike." Marvin Hartmann answered.

"I guess, if it gets us some new bats" Nick Morrison, the hitting coach, said.

Kelly stood up "Well I guess that's it then, I'll go call the players and tell them that our team is now named after, apparently their favorite, beer brand"
"If it's stupid and it works, it's not stupid"

WALSTREIM LIONS
Image
Last season: 44-28, 1st in SE; lost in Southern Championship (2-4 Rhinos)

Notable personnel:
Coach: Diego Lowe, 38
RP: Hine Salle, 25, Chromatika
1B: Mattieu Gammond, 26, Chromatika
3B: Yousuf Henry, 18
LF: Chan Ford, 29, Drawkland

The Lions managed to defend their division title, although the relatively weak division certainly helped them. Throughout the season, the team couldn’t quite get into rhythm, falling into losing streaks seemingly without warning. However, a strong 16-5 finish ensured they’d cruise to another Southeast title. They won 44 games, precisely the amount they’d won a season before, and they did it largely with the same staff. Only the Dragons and the Blue Sox allowed fewer runs than the Lions did, and Salle specifically was among the best relief pitchers of the league. They also had the fourth-most runs, largely carried by Ford and Gammond; but the team lacks in South Newlandian top stars. Henry had a decent season, but there was certainly more possible; maybe they can even regain the top seed in the South.

Big win: MD48: Walstreim Lions 10-0 Sophie City Girls
Big game: MD72: Walstreim Lions 7-1 St. Riecarn Saints
Big loss: MD68: Walstreim Lions 1-13 St. Riecarn Saints

ST. RIECARN SAINTS
Image
Last season: 35-37, 3rd in SE, lost in divisional round (0-3 Lions)

Notable personnel:
Coach: Mo Darrell, 32
SP: Ienaga Vineno, 24, Ko-oren
RP: Stef Svojarnsson, 21
C: Elias Nilssen, 24, Super-Llamaland
2B: Stuart Hernandez, 24, Tikariot
CF: Shawn Zimmerman, 21

The Saints made history by not only getting into the playoffs again, but also successfully posting a winning record; the first of the new expansion teams to do that. Sure, they were 37-35, and sure, they had a negative run differential, but they won more than half their games. They certainly had a playoff calibre team, too; With Vineno as a capable ace, Svojarnsson from the pen, and Nilssen behind home plate. None of these guys are actually famous, but all of them are very reliable starters. On top of that, Hernandez and Zimmerman could rightfully be called stars, each of them excelling at their positions. Despite a very rocky 2-8 start, Darrell pulled the team together, and a small late season slide was not enough to lose them a wildcard spot.

Big win: MD68: Walstreim Lions 1-13 St. Riecarn Saints
Big game: MD55: St. Riecarn Saints 3-10 Elephant Valley United
(United somehow managed to hold on to that lead in the bottom of the ninth, a move that the Saints clearly had not seen coming)
Big loss: MD25: Lexen City Rebels 10-2 St. Riecarn Saints

RATZUPALFU RHINOS
Image
Last season: 35-37, 2nd in SE, Champions (5-2 Dragons)

Notable personnel:
Coach: Fu Webb, 39
SP: Ryan Hunter, 24
RP: Sukemichi Kamiizumi, 23, Ko-oren
C: Hugh Marquez, 22
SS: Bob Flowers, 24
CF: Nalivalu Amakusa, 26, Ko-oren

The Rhinos were their usual selves, mostly, hovering just around .500 for most of the season. Then, they went 3-12 across the next 15 games, digging themselves into a hole to deep to recover from. The Rhinos, the team that won the championship in the two prior seasons, was not going to play in the postseason. That had a multitude of reasons, including the fact that both championships had been quite lucky to begin with; but the injury bug certainly took its fair share. Catcher Marquez was out for more than half the season after a home plate collision with the Baselanders’ Right Fielder Ludwig in the 15th inning of Matchday 25 broke his left leg in two places. Hunter pitched a peak season, winning more than two thirds of his starts, and Kamiizumi was above average from the bullpen, but Flowers and Amakusa remained rather ineffective. The loss of Salas in the offseason to the Dachshunds clearly hurt the team, too.

Big win: MD16: Elephant Valley Homers 4-11 Ratzupalfu Rhinos
Big game: MD25: Southwestern Baselanders 1-0 Ratzupalfu Rhinos
Big loss: MD48: Ratzupalfu Rhinos 3-9 St. Riecarn Saints

SOPHIE CITY GIRLS
Image
Last season: 30-42, 4th in SE, missed playoffs

Notable personnel:
Coach: Alice Blade, 39
SP: Emily Innis, 31, Super-Llamaland
SP: Maike Bookmer, 22
RP: Abby Conrad, 20
1B: Sophia Smiths, 25
2B: Malika Bains, 21
RF: Sophie Lawrence, 28

No one could really point out why the Girls failed this badly in this season. There was no real reason; except for Blade, the teams first-year manager, failing to put her tools to good use. The team should have had more than enough power to win at least 35 games, instead of a mere 28. Even a playoff appearance should have been possible. And yet, Innis and Bookmer both missed some time throughout the season, and were average when they did play. Innis, especially, was far from what she could’ve been. The bullpen had no one besides Conrad, and the scoring was driven by Smiths and Lawrence, with little help from anyone else. It just wasn’t enough to make some real noise. Blade resigned her position after the season.

Big win: MD16: Sophie City Girls 10-2 Sun City Flames
Big game: MD33: Sophie City Girls 1-3 Southwestern Baselanders
Big loss: MD1: Newport Dolphins 10-1 Sophie City Girls

Wild Hunt for the wild card

Now every win achieved counts, to have at least a chance to get a Wild Card for the next round and to start anew there.

After winning the first game against the Inklings without problem, again a loss created more pressure.
And the team delivered with a run in the first inning in the next game. It was the only one in the game.
The best chance to beat South Americanastan could be to offer them a contract from a local beer sponsor to get them so drunk that they can’t play anymore.

“That is of course a total stupid plan we already have considered and discarded”, said an official of the KBL.

Bardney base ball team shows character

Rudolph Colburn, Bristol Herald

Suffering is often a blessing in disguise. Our Lord suffered for us, and did yet redeem us. Our forefathers in Sasunn suffered under the yoke of religious persecution, and did yet achieve religious liberty in this land. Our forefathers here suffered under the groaning weight of unjust taxation by our Sasunnish masters and did yet birth this great nation. Perhaps the temporal suffering of our Bardney team, as they were attacked by Qzvarkian Qaz and swept by Chromatika may yet result in success at the World Base Ball Classic.

Our men have been rounding into form throughout this tournament. In fact, I scarcely think it hyperbole to describe their 10-2 record after their initial series defeat to Chromatika as the momentum of a runaway freight train. They swept Hicaña, as well as the nation of Qzvarkian Qaz. And here I beg my readers to humbly forgive me as I address that particular series. In the first game, a player named Dieter Schleiber viciously attacked the Dartford Flash, Kermit Connelly, completely unprovoked. Connelly defended himself, as any man of character would, and although he emerged with a shiner, Schleiber left with fewer teeth than he came to the game with. Both players were ejected, which I think highly unjust, as Schleiber started the fight and Connelly merely defended himself. Nevertheless, Numbers Osbourne finished the game and Bardney won. You can expect nothing less from a team with integrity and character, while the Qzvarkian Qaz team represents mostly mercenaries who have no love of country. This sorts of men cannot be trusted on any account and are often given to the most perverse of behaviors.

Even against the Sherpa Empire, which mostly appears to be composed of people of Zhong Guan extraction, our men were victorious. The Sherpa Empire is considered one of the best base ball nations in the world, but our men took two of three from them. Emmett Harrison, the Duquesne Dynamite, struck home five runs in the series, leading the team to victory. Finally, they faced the moon men of Quintessence of Dust. This is an exceedingly strange nation, again mostly of Zhong Guan and Taiyouan extraction, who has developed technology that allows them to live in the frigid climes of the Antarctic. No civilized person would ever want to live near the poles, but their contraption that transported our team to their frosty home was quite a sight to see. It is a pity such technology is wasted on people who live in a barren waste, beautiful to behold perhaps from the deck of a ship, or overawing when one first lays eyes on it, but pales in comparison to the comforts of our more temperate abode. Kermit Connelly could not make it out of the first inning in the first game, unfortunately, and left the game having allowed nine runs in fewer than one inning. Stanford Otis pitched remarkably well in relief, but the shock of playing on the moon left our team without the ability to score. They did defeat the ice-dwellers in both of the other games, with Gerhard Zeidler getting the winning strike in the tenth inning of game two, and Thaddeus O'Neill pitching a "Lakeford game" in game three.

The Bardneyian team's superior moral fiber is clearly shown in this excellent run of play. But all things must come to an end. In their rematch against Chromatika, our men tossed quite well, only allowing ten runs in three games, but they only scored two, dooming them to defeat in all of their games. However, they took their losses like men, with no whinging or grumbling, only an ironclad resolve to break their losing streak and win enough games to qualify for the playoffs. They have already succeeded in surpassing their record from the last World Base Ball Classic, having won eleven games to WBC 50's eight. Onward and upward, or Excelsior as our fair state of New Avon's motto goes. Their suffering will be turned into victory, their mourning into dancing, and their endurance into the reward of playoff base ball.

Meanwhile, at the Escandinavian Base Ball Championship, though I scarcely think it worth mentioning, the so-called Bardneyian team finds itself on the brink of elimination. It has been defeated by our former colonial master Sasunn 2-1 in 12 innings, achieved a 5-2 victory over Qatre-Rivieres, and lost to Zhong Gua 4-1. They stand at 2-3 with one game to play, against Sasunn. They must win and hope for a series of tiebreakers to fall in their favor, a slim hope at best. Though one might hope they have learned the folly of playing by international rules as opposed to our own, superior game, one suspects that all they have learned is how to lose money gambling. I am also informed that the men of the team have been consorting with socialists, both foreign and domestic, and this is of course another reason to doubt the integrity and character of this team. Socialism is the philosophy of rabble-rousers and layabouts, and no good can come of it. I advise all good Bardneyians to follow the World Baseball Classic team, sound money, and the Bristol Herald. These are the marks of a Bardneyian of good character.

I'm concerned about Control Subject 097. She has not travelled overseas, nor has she been deliberately influenced in any way. Yet, she seems to be suffering from paranoid delusions.

Are you sure this is a bad thing? All this indicates is that she's rather conscientious and prone to pattern-sensing behavior. If results show that the manipulated group are less likely to feel paranoid or influenced than the controls, surely this is the most desirable outcome!

Don't be naive--there's no causal mechanism that could explain the manipulated group feeling less paranoid.

Well, it may be worth defining a more precise term to indicate someone's belief that they, personally, are being targeted. ie, if someone thinks that an organized group or "cabal" has conspired to negatively influence that person, by name, rather than a more general group that that individual happens to fall into. As far as I know, no subject in either group has had these feelings, but with further interventions we might expect them from the manipulated group. If our influence is too overt, it will lead to resentment or possibly backlash.

I see you've been monitoring 097 closely as well. I agree, her behavior lacks the self-important grandeur we might expect from the merely unbalanced, or from the perceptive manipulated group. She didn't seem to be an outlier on any of the background scales.

Don't try to diagnose her or retroactively explain her until the experiment is complete. This phase, anyway.

There's another phase?

There should be. As you said, she wasn't an outlier from the rest of the control population on the background scales.

So what's your point? There are plenty of Zebras fans.

But only in one country.

You think we can duplicate this on another fanbase? The amount of ethical guidelines and consent forms we'd need...

Calm down. One thing at a time.

Boy oh boy, did the pitchers come to throw this series. Only conceding two runs in three games? Simply. Beautiful. Baseball. It was the first time in Amateurs history that three pitchers pitched complete games in a series and all ended up as victors; the bullpen simply didn't need to do anything. It was a great way to tune up for the series against Qzvarkian Qaz, which will lead to the much harder games against both Sherpa and Quintessence of Dust.

Maybe Han, de Witt, and Angelou will continue their pitching clinics? One can hope.

Capital Stadium, Hapilopper City
Right after World Baseball Classic 51 Series 7: Hapilopper v. Super-Llamaland
Dale Moss sat in the press room after the third and deciding game of the series between the Hap Thrashers and the Super-Llamaland Tigers, and for the first time after a series, was in less than a joyous mood. He looked back at the banner, which carried the names of numerous Hap Thrashers sponsors – Preston Autos, Hammer Sports Manufacturing, Fresh Cola, among others. He then looked back towards the throng of media – sportswriters, photographers, TV types, anyone that could fit into the room, looking for comments from the Hap Thrasher skipper.

“We just got beat,” Dale said. “I don’t know what you all are looking for, but we got beat. I said before the start of this series that Super-Llamaland is a much better team than their record suggested. You know, and it’s not as if we beat ourselves, either. Super-Llamaland just outplayed us. That’s all there really is to it. The umpires did a great job, they called it about as perfectly as you can call a game, our players worked their asses off, and we tried to get the bats working, but their pitching was just too strong this time. You know, Isaac Oladipo and his staff are doing something really interesting with their team, and they had a rough start, yes, but they’ve got a really talented group of guys. And if they can make up the difference and make it to the playoffs, they’re gonna go deep. I promise.”

Dale was stunningly frank with the media, lavishing praise on the Super-Llamaland Tigers for their performance, but at the same time, not throwing anyone from the Hap Thrashers under the bus. Dale didn’t think anyone needed to be thrown under the bus, probably disappointing a reporter or two who tried to bait Dale into doing so.

“Do you think Nolan Jefferson’s legal troubles might be a distraction for the team?” one reporter asked. “I mean, that’s dominated headlines lately and Nolan has been less than remorseful for his actions.”

“Not at all,” Dale replied. “The team knows that Nolan comes with his own issues and that’s that. I’m not going to call his legal issues a distraction. He just shouldn’t be driving a car. That has no bearing on whether or not he’s a good pitcher.”

“How about Lucky Spalding?” another reporter asked. “You pulled him in the second game after the Tigers scored five on him in the second inning, are you going to reconsider his appearance in the starting rotation?”

“Not at all,” Dale said. “Pitchers just have off days, and…”

“…but doesn’t it seem like his brand of eccentric is a little too much for the team when you’re trying to get a good start out of him?”

“First off, don’t interrupt me,” Dale sharply said, pointing a finger towards the reporter. “I was getting ready to explain something, and I don’t appreciate being interrupted like that. If you want to hear from me, let me finish.”

“The question remains, Mr. Moss,” the reporter shouted out.

“And I’ll get to it, because it’s a good question,” Dale said. “But let me finish my original thought before you interrupt me. Now, can I finish?”

The silence from the rest of the press room, pierced by the sound of cameras clicking off, indicated to Dale that he could indeed finish.

“Now then,” Dale started. “Pitchers have off days all the time. Lucky just missed on a few pitches. It doesn’t mean he’s a bad pitcher, and it doesn’t mean he’s not national team material. He just missed on some pitches, and the Tigers took advantage of it. When I went up to see him after Emery Wu hit that home run, it was clear that it was starting to bother him. He had just given up a grand slam without registering a single out. And after he walked Zhuhang, and after Huang brought him home on a double, it was clear that if we kept him in, they were just going to tee off. His confidence was shot. So I told him to go in the clubhouse, I wasn’t mad at him, just get a couple of cold beers, sit in the cold tub or something and relax.”

“Do you think his brand of eccentric is too much, though?”

“No. I don’t,” Dale confidently stated. “We’ve got all sorts of crazy people on the team. We’ve got manchildren on the team. We got a guy that is legally forbidden from calling a dozen politicians on the phone. We have a guy that stole a bullpen cart, set it on fire and crashed it into a gas station. We’ve got a guy that sits in his hotel room when we travel places, reads children’s comic books and drinks chocolate milk laced with straight whiskey. Don’t ask me why. All Lucky does is he has a weird ritual of eating two chili dogs and drinking a cold beer before each start. Nothing wrong with that. I mean, what’s weird about him? He throws an eephus. Big fucking deal. More pitchers should throw eephuses.”

Dale thought about it.

“Or is it eephii? Who knows. Who cares.”

Now And Forever

PART 7.1 (64.1) - Binasoo+

'And as the islands sunk into the metaphysical existence without their physical body of representation, the life nearby went along elsewhere like a wave of amnesia. Nobody was surprised, for the islets' provincial, republican presences in the international maps were blurred by their evaporation into another region, halfway across the world, where they technically belonged. Unfortunately, while they were physically located on that opposite half of the world, everybody did not acknowledge their existence, and sooner than later, the land eventually sunk from their physical location too.'

As he closed the final reading of his four short stories, from the collection 'Taylor Merchant's Ode to Avonlea and Glendale Isles', Asher was relieved to hear a round of applause. Not only was he glad the three hours had successfully passed, the task that he viewed as the first of many gates he had to open was all over.

In order to understand Asher's particular nerves, especially around his fear of losing control of the personal narrative in one, we had to remember the setting he was in. The highest Quebecois society, whether in Montreal or Quebec City, were all intricately linked towards one another: Everybody knew each other, everybody knew their friends and knew their contacts through a friend or two, a dozen mailing list or two times that, or through an unfortunate encounter too many. Even within those circles, however, you had to remember the differences in atmosphere between Montreal and Quebec City, and our poor Asher was subjected least two.

One circle was that of the royalty and the political circles, consisting of the Queen Christine the Second, the Prince Consort Caspian, and not to mention Arsene Pineau Kim, half the members of the cabinet and the shadow cabinet. Asher had little trouble remembering the intentions they had in place, especially given the friendship a mere Taegukgi Sports Editor would hold with the monarch, or the matter of respect this charismatic, 45 yr old Prime Minister held for the celebrated diplomat in Robert Lundrigan, or the sheer name of Lauzon barony. He knew their relations with one another, the complicated dynamics they had with each other in equivalents of Monday night soap operas, how they viewed and manoeuvred around their political positions for the future, and what would be potential errors. But the past trails of guilt and controversies would mean that political circle, even if he were to only limit himself to the Royal Household possible under any of Queen's generous offers, would likely spell an eventual implosion for the man, and so Asher had stayed out of it.

Another circle that Asher was not merged into, but has kept close attention, was that of hers- the circle of Montreal and California City-based musicians around Eileen de Ramaut. While Eileen was the very apple of his eye of talent, and had remained as the standard of any critiques he would occasionally leave from the surface, he knew that Janet Mullen-Baker, the tall, dark-haired manager of hers, was the focal point of this society. Those around Eileen was a group of well-intentioned, gentle and truly professional men, and steel, iron-boned veteran women of the industry, who has been through many struggles against discrimination still problematic in the industry.

As one of many bloodstreams of the neverending circle that is the Montrealais music scene, from pop to folk and rock, it was referred by a high gentleman, sitting on his adjudication table better reserved for high school Kiwanis competitions, as the 'true voices of the Montrealais'. Asher, a sheer provincial child whose barony inherited from his maternal grandmother had meant little in the court hierarchy, held this group of egalitarian, widespread human beings absolute respect and highest esteem, and Eileen was delighted that the worlds weren't going to collide, especially the second time they have been together.

Now, with the merging of his colours from mere spades of black and white to chromatic shades nearing either lavender or olive, Asher was coming to an increased realisation that he didn't belong there either. It all became too clear to him that he simply didn't have the mold, nor the interest, to be of great interests to them unless it had concerned the apple-eye, and the circuit's inability to explain the irrational and the supernatural didn't comfort the fact either.

The last circle, where Asher had ties, was the world of intellectuals, of quiet afternoon chats, of metaphysical engagements, the world of simple suits and awkward fittings that he had once built himself into, but had never really submerged into. The life within The Taegukgi and the Quebec City intellectuals, whose artistic and political circuits of the Capitol were tied to the back of each other's hands, were intricate. Of course it was inevitable - the merger between eager yet untalented provincials, just as untalented but mentally advantageous Capitoliens, and their masters, who had grown up in the system, were done in the murkiest of (un)holy waters. Asher's connections with this cycle was rather straightforward, in that the collegiate environment of St. Croix and his professors, from Heo Dong-Soo and Lindsey Linehan-Devers, had begun it all, and had found their roots all the way to the adjudicators, whose interest in his mercurial talent had brought Asher to the heart of Koreana Society.

'It takes a lot to sift through the talent, the gold, out of sand, but what matters is that you are able to find it in the end,' Jeremy Gam-Noh, his Editor-in-Chief, often said to Asher in encouragement, 'And the human spirit, the one that overcomes it all, ought be the guide of it all.'

Since returning to Quebec City three years ago, Asher did his best to say little and not say much unless the life had necessiated such measures, and had hoped that the second circle would allow him to be a good supporting figure. But the trails of mental expenses, the payments that came in the form of pieces of his soul that Asher had lost in the beds of several dozen women he had defiled, had meant that he had to rethink on his own. Since the Southern Rushmori Tour, where his duties to Concord Heights Times and The Taegukgi had brought him greater respect and responsibility, Asher had realised that his shift was necessary. He began to rediscover his connections to serious-minded friends who had their eyes on him, and went into the different world.
