Government “on the brink of collapse” – again

For the fourth time in as many years, the government looks set to dissolve and call new elections, as David Austmannsson’s troubled tenure as Prime Minister navigates yet another storm in the Thing. Sources close to the Prime Minister describe him as “frustrated” but “clear eyed about the consequences” if the welfare reform bill fails its next committee reading. With its pension provisions having already provoked a wave of back-bench revolts, now the bill’s cuts to energy benefits have led to further resignations and even the threat of a leadership challenge with the Blue-Green Party. The ructions have undermined an already fragile coalition’s tenuous grip on power, and according to those familiar with the Prime Minister’s thinking: “He thinks they are spending too much political capital and would rather try again after a fresh election.”

But such a gambit would be a bold, even risky move for a government whose approval ratings have yet to rise past 25% following last summer’s riots in Laafjörður. The Blue-Greens rode to power on the back of the weakness of the Left-slate led coalition government but a coalition of the centre with the Progressive Liberals fell apart over regional infrastructure funding. Austmannsson led his party to a second term of office, this time forming a coalition with the Liberal-Conservatives, but instead of the Left or Liberals, it has been those to his right giving him the most trouble. The rapid rise of the National Democratic Front has swamped the once-powerful Catholic Democratic Party and is now eating into the voting base the Blue-Greens have come to depend on. The most recent round of Uni-G polling showed the NDF polling 5% higher than the Blue-Greens – above the margin of error, and an astonishing return for a once-fringe party compared to the dominant parties of the last political decade.

Austmannson is a canny political operator who has survived scandals personal and political. Unanswered questions about his wife’s receipt of funds for unspecified ‘consulting fees’ from energy giant Überolía dominated the last elections, but he turned the relentless attacks on their head with a passionate, tearful defense (that, sharp-eyed legal analysts noted, did not actually deny the specific charges). Immediately on winning re-election, he forced through the infrastructure funding that had brought down his previous government, setting in motion development of the massive new GANAX Cosmodrome that aims to make Græntfjall a major regional space power and sell commercial launch opportunities. But this latest battle is one that has taken a particularly severe toll on the former war hero. Caught between the fiscal demands of his LCA coalition partners and the ageing voter base of his party increasingly drawn to the social conservatism of the NDF, the spat over pensions cuts appears to have taken years out of his political life. In Hvítursalur corridors, the joke has been that the only progress on the bill has been the receding of the Prime Minister’s hairline.

The current dispute concerns cuts made to subsidised rates for heating costs for the elderly and those on benefits, including those who receive the Low Pay Commission’s top-up credit. In a passionate – some would say histrionic – speech on the floor of the Thing, NDF leader Sigjón Þjóðbjörnsson attacked the bill as “robbing our most valued citizens”; NDF attack ads aired during the half-time interval of last week’s Copa Rushmori game against Astidt, showing elderly pensioners shivering in freezing hovels and making prominent reference to the government’s decision to rehouse at taxpayer expense a group of asylum seekers who had burned down the holding camp in which they were being detained for assessment and processing. “Maybe we should burn down our house, the government will buy us a new one,” says a war veteran in the NDF advert. “No, we’re not Muslims, so David Austmannsson doesn’t care about us,” replies his wife.

However lacking in subtlety the NDF’s suspiciously well-funded campaign may be, it has proven markedly effective in destroying the support base of the Catholic Democratics, virtually all of whose voters appear to have been swallowed up by the ‘True Blue Surge’. They are now making serious inroads into Blue-Green voters. Those with a long memory have long resented the NDF for their republicanism, but that stance has been softened under Þjóðbjörnsson, in his past author of scathing constitutional and personal criticisms of the royal family, but who now introduced the conference motion abolishing ‘Clause Four’ of the NDF Charter (which had called for the re-abolition of the monarchy) and wrote an open letter of thanks to the Queen for her embrace of the gay community during the height of Græntfjall’s AIDS crisis.

Despite their recent poll surge, if elections do follow tomorrow’s vote, the NDF have no clear path to entering government. Reviled as racists and fascists by the Left-slate and Progressive Liberals, and as nothing more than common street thugs by the Blue-Greens and Liberal-Conservatives, any power-sharing coalition with the major parties seems untenable, and the collapse in the CDP leaves them with no possible allies. But having already proven themselves more effective in opposition than the nominal official opposition, the NDF represent a political threat that must be taken increasingly serious to those on left and right alike. Tomorrow’s vote will decide more than the future of heating costs for elderly Græntfjallers: it could determine the political future of the country.

All About The Gothanita Isles
South Jeolerina: Capitalism is the way of life
Part 1: Unlike our northern brothers
As written by Mr. Peterson Jaffason, Chief Editor at the Jeolerina Daily

When I was invited to write this article about our glorious country, and our leader, President Hans Chris, I was thinking of what to write. Then I realised the best topic would be start with our economy to take a nice jab at our fellow comrades in North Handoria. I am sorry, but the South's ways are better than the North.

To be honest, I do not understand how the Handorians have the money and the resources to sustain themselves in a country that doesn't even have a strong economy. Look at us. While Otksarin can make their claims about themselves being an economic powerhouse in TGI, I would like to correct that and say that South Jeolerina and Otksarin are the twin engines. It is just that we have a much smaller population (we have what - less than 3 million people in total? Otksarin has at least twice that number.) Our GDP per capita is on par with that of Otksarin. But that is besides the point. Being socialist, there is no incentive for people to work for the common good. Apart from the people's mindest telling them that they need to work hard, for instance, we have absolutely no idea how that is sustainable. Especially as more people choose to join the dark side.

An economic powerhouse like us, we don't really have to care a lot about other things. People care about money, additional riches, new houses, so they will work even harder and harder. Big companies of South Jeolerina have to deal with North Handoria's government directly. South Jeolerina's richest people are probably having more money than North Handoria's coffers. That is because capitalism is the way of life. Hard work is what will help us improve the economy even further, to take the country to even better material wealth.

South Jeolerina, unlike North Handoria, pride themselves in having to only focus on work. Who needs elections when money speaks? The government is consistently focused on providing economic policies that would benefit the big corporations. That is what matters.

Copa Rushmori 37 - Pignot Stadium, Farrenton, Eura
HSP Scorers: Ozeano Amunategui (40'), Chicho Mondragon (90 + 1')
HSP Lineup: Natalio Londono, Gurutze Aranaz ( Chicho Mondragon 63'), Casimiro Coro, Chequil Puma, Fermin Maquibar ( Latisha Gurule 62'), Cordovan Chia, Trinidad Quevedo ( Salomon Duran 90 + 1'), Maite De la Pena, Gorka Uralde, Peppi Palmero, Ozeano Amunategui

Hispinas ended their first match in the Copa Rushmori in a dramatic way, with substitute player Chicho Mondragon scoring a late goal to break the 1-1 deadlock with second seeds Darmen. Both the squads scored a goal apiece in the first half, Darmen scored first blood through Craig Blackwood at the 15th minute, with Alfonzo Medrano not looking too happy at the sidelines. He had seen the defense collapsing to Bill St. John's run at their right side of the pitch, leaving an open striker to kick the ball freely past Natalio Londono. Hispinas though waited 25 minutes to strike back with a goal of their own, with Peppi Palmero breaking the offside trap set by the Darmenis, she ran with the ball and found herself with a one-on-one with keeper Hyman Campo, but she saw her teammate Ozeano Amunategui wide open after he reacted well to Palmero's run, breaking away from his defenders. Like Blackwood, he had an easy time tapping the ball past Campo and into the back of the net to end the half 1-1.

By the start of the second half, neither teams were able to capitalize their opportunities in front of goal as both tightened up their defenses. The closest attempt at goal saw Blackwood try to double his goal tally in the 65th minute, but his shot was parried away with force by the FC Cebuenas keeper, keeping the scores level for the time being. After the teams made all their substitutions, the Hispinos made one last attempt to score a goal inside added time, when Chicho found an open path to dribble the ball unassisted to be on a one on one situation with Campo, this time though, unlike Palmero who passed the ball to her teammate, he psyched up the keeper into watching the approaching forward from Atletikoa, but he instead blasted the ball past the Darmeni keeper to score his first international goal in his first appearance in the national team.

The players celebrated and the subs joined them in the sidelines while the Darmeni players and fans were shocked in the late game development. Darmen made one last attempt to deny Hispinas the win, but substitute Ivan Borde could only graze the top of the bar on his seemingly good volley. With Hispinas winning the first game against Darmen, another win against Astidt can secure them a Round of 16 ticket if Graintfjall also manage to beat Darmen in the second matchday.

OOC: To reiterate, this is a continuation of a previous RP line, and is currently set during WC87/CoH79/Euraleague S46. Therefore others RPs of this CR shouldn’t suggest this is a currently developing story/set of events.

Life in the Seventh Star

Part Eighteen

A Euran soldier was thrown to the floor by a brick hitting him in the side of the head, right in the gap between shoulder and helmet. Colonel Forster watched on as his comrades dragged him away, stunned and bleeding.
Christ on a bike, this is a fucking mess.
‘Colonel, the police line is breaking here, we need to do something!’
‘Yeah, I can bloody well see that. Just give me a minute.’ He marched back into the stadium and out onto the derelict pitch, the overgrown grass stretching all the way from the turf to his knees. There was now an increasing amount of wounded police, army personnel and arrested protestors strewn across the pitch. Forster, understandably, did not want another dressing down from the Prime fucking Minister. He needed a favour. ‘Jones!’
‘Sir?’
‘Satellite phone, right now.’

He tried to keep the call at the level of senior military staff, but yet again it was redirected up to a political level, and suddenly he was (speaking to and under the direction of) the Minister of Defence.
Sort this shite out, Forster’, he said. Predictably.
‘Give me what I need and I will’, Forster replied with venom. To his shock and surprise, the Minister did just that. ‘The order from the PM was to get this done today, not in one week or two, today. So you have my blessing to use whatever you require.’ Lieutenant Jones looked at Forster blankly as he handed the phone back over. ‘Jones, go and find Major Peters and bring him to me.’
‘Yes sir – what’s uh, going down, if you don’t mind me asking?’
‘You’ve got eyes and ears haven’t you?’ The sarcasm was not subtle, and had no reason to be – there were thousands of pissed off Aspelites knocking on the door very loudly and aggressively. ‘Just go and get him and let me handle the rest before this gets out of control.’ Jones skipped away as merrily as one could in such a situation, leaving the Colonel to make another call on his radio. After being bounced around a few times, he finally got the caller he wanted.

This is Galentine, 34th. How’s it going over there Forster? Looks a bit tasty from here.
‘Colonel Galentine, good to hear from you! That’s one way of putting it, yeah…listen, I’ve got direct orders from the chiefs and the MoD to speed this thing up and keep it safe. The police have tried to push the crowd back and it just isn’t working. If they breach the line last time, they could overrun the stadium. We cannot let that happen, not when we’re in the middle of surveying and loading the thing up with demolition charges. How many vehicles have you got on hand?’
Uh…wait one.
Tick tock. We don’t have time for this…!
‘Galentine?’
Alright, give me a moment. Ok…we have a few Cavaliers in the shop and there’s a platoon of them out of town on counter-ops. But I’ve got two platoons on base of all three of our vehicle types. You’ve already got MRAPs, so I’m guessing some APCs will do the trick?
‘No, it’s the Cavaliers I need.’
‘So one or two then? I’ll get them loaded up for intimidation, speakers and all that.’
‘No, no, I need them for demolition.’

‘…what? Colonel Forster, with respect, are you listening to what you’re saying?’
‘I am indeed, and I’m telling you, I want both those platoons down here in half an hour. Loaded to bear. HE only. Forster, out.’
’Fuck, I hope you’ve cleared this with the higher ups!
‘You betcha’.’ Peters arrived just as Forster hung up, red in the face from running. He’s become a porky so-and-so since the war ended, thought Forster. ‘Colonel, sir!’
‘Right, Peters, why aren’t those bloody streets clear?’
‘Police tried to advance and didn’t get anywhere, we’re working on alternatives now. We were thinking maybe we could just do the surveying work tonight, come back tomorrow.’
‘No, that’s not an option anymore. Listen, I’ve just spoken to the Minister of Defence and the plan is changing. We’re not going with a standard demo op anymore – we’re doing this tonight.’
‘Tonight? Colonel, there’s civilians all over the bloody place!’
‘Well, you’d better get moving them then eh? Just get fucking rough with them if you have to, stop worrying about the papers and the lawyers and do your bloody job.’
‘How are we even going to do it? There’s no way we can load this place with charges in time.’
‘That’s very true. And that’s why we’ve got tanks on the way.’

----------

By the time Mateo and his hastily-assembled family intervention squad arrived on Palla Avenue, the situation outside the Dellaro was already anarchic. The crowd was huge, several times bigger than the one that assembled the other night and approaching the stadium from every direction this time. The only route in that wasn’t chock full of protestors was the motorway running through the port and past the far side of the stadium, which the Eurans had closed to allow the police and security forces to come and go without delays. No matter – they had to get to the front before Natalie did and stop her and whomever she was working with. Mateo and Medoro were set to dive into the crowd, and Arabella wanted to join them, but her father pulled her back before she could get any further. ‘Bella, no. You stay here with your mother alright?’
‘What? Dad, I want to help!’
‘Hey, you did well getting supplies together, you’ve helped already. I’m not taking any risks with you. Just stay here, please?’
‘Dad.’ Arabella squared up to her father, almost like she wasn’t a head shorter than him. ‘Mum can’t stop me going in there, and neither can you. Please.’ Ryan glanced at his wife, who gave him the tiniest of nods. ‘…alright, but you stay behind me at all times, alright? And the moment anything kicks off, you get back.’

One by one they forced their way into the crowd and made their way through. It took them only twenty minutes of searching to find Natalie, much quicker than they had anticipated. She was near the front, suspiciously huddled over a bag. Mateo beelined straight for her, pushing his way past a dozen or so protestors before grabbing his sisters arm as firmly as he could. ‘Hey, get the fu- Matty? Matty what the fuck? Get off!‘
‘Natalie, I know what you’re here to do alright? Just come home, please.’
‘Didn’t you fucking hear me? Off.’ Mateo’s older sister tried to tear her arm from his vice like grip. ‘Dude-‘
‘Natalie! Listen to your brother!’ Medoro grabbed her other arm, but she wrestled him off much more easily. Mateo started to struggle as his attempts to get her to come away fell flat, and the crowd around them squeezed them together making it almost hard to breathe. He could taste hair and sweat, and had no idea how many people it belonged to. Finally, he lost his grip on her. ‘Natalie!’ She was lost in the crowd, melting away into a human mass. Natalie was gone.

‘Guys, are you alright?’ Arabella and Ryan had got separated from them and only just caught up, finding Medoro winded and Mateo in a panic. ‘I had her…we had her. I don’t know where she is.'
'There!' Natalie was at the front, but suddenly she and everyone else was stumbling backwards towards them. ‘Fuck, move! Matty!’ Medoro spotted the signs of a crush immediately and grabbed his nephew by the collar. He dragged him back as far as he could, until the surge stopped, and the human wave stabilised once more. ‘What on earth is going on up there?’ Ryan was slightly taller than the other two and could just about see what had just happened. ‘It’s the Army, they’re pushing everyone back. Wait here.’ Ryan was the only person going forward as the crowd retreated again, a wall of urban camouflage, BDU’s and semi-automatic rifles forcing them as quickly as possible away from the stadium. It was like a medieval battle with tarmac rather than mud. He reached the front and was suddenly isolated, alone, several feet in front of everyone else. Two soldiers with facemasks approached him with handcuffs, ready to grab him.

Instinctively, Ryan displayed his ID and started shouting at them. ‘Hey, hey, back off! I’m a Euran citizen, you hear me?’ One of the soldiers rolled his eyes and aggressively pushed Ryan to the floor. ‘You’re all fucking Euran citizens, that’s the whole point mate. Move back, that’s an order.’ Unlike most in this situation, Ryan had no intention of backing down. He rushed to his feet and got right in the soldiers face, taking him by surprise and putting the infantryman squarely on the back foot. ‘I said, I’m a Euran citizen, I work for the Provisional Government.’
‘Oh yeah?’
Yeah. Do you hear that? I’m a government fucking lawyer, so I want you to not take another bloody step so you can assault me or anyone else. What’s your rank and number? Where’s your commanding officer?’ The soldier went silent, drawing the attention of his colleagues. Before he could speak, a rumbling sound began to shake the ground beneath them. For the first time, the crowd went silent. Mateo gripped Bella’s hand, and both the soldiers and Ryan turned to watch.

Pulling up in front of the stadium were two MBT-8H main battle tanks, the mainstay of the Euran Army’s heavy armour. The crowd couldn’t see them very well, but on the highway flyover east of the stadium, another six tanks had taken up position overlooking the stadium. An officer of some kind climbed on top of one of the tanks with a loudspeaker, surveyed the crowd, and started barking out instructions. ‘Everyone, on behalf of the Aspel Metropolitan Council and the Provisional Government, we are carrying out a demolition order on this commercial property. If you remain here, you are obstructing official business and carrying out a criminal offence. If you continue to attack Army personnel, you will be arrested. Please return to your homes immediately…’ After a few seconds of speaking he began to be drowned out by howls of outrage from the crowd. The soldier Ryan had just tried to powerplay turned around and got closer to him, their noses only an inch apart. ‘Big fucking man are you, eh? Fucking move on mate.’ Ryan averted his gaze. Not because he couldn’t look at the man – but because he was more interested in his colleague.

The other soldier was shaking and wide eyed. Ryan had seen a lot of soldiers before after situations like this. Eurans, Samebans, and all manner of nationalities in other conflicts earlier in his career. Conflict was his specialism, and he knew where this was heading. He headed back into the crowd and made straight for his daughter, Mateo and Medoro.
‘Listen, we need to find your sister now Mateo and get out of here, you hear me?’
‘No shit-‘
‘Really, I’m not kidding, we need to get a move on. This is going to get ugly, I know it.’
‘Wait, what do you mean?’ Ryan didn’t answer, glancing nervously over his shoulder instead. ‘Just trust me. Come on, any sign of her?’ All four of them looked around desperately.
The Army advanced further.
She was nowhere to be seen.
The Army advanced even more. Two patrol vehicles started to follow the line of soldiers, machine guns pointed just above the crowd in a display of potential force.
Mateo fell to the floor, unable to breathe. His uncle dived down, ignoring his own old injury to help his nephew. He pushed off the woman that had fallen on top of him and dragged the boy to his feet. ‘I saw her’ Mateo wheezed, ‘she’s over there!’ He pointed weakly to their left. There she was – stood atop a car with a handful of others wearing face coverings.

‘Natalie!’ She couldn’t hear them, not this far away. ‘Heeeeey! Natalie, its us! Get down from there!’ Medoro found himself bundled to the floor now. As Ryan got him up and out of the next row of people forward, crushing one another involuntarily, Arabella broke out from behind him. She climbed over several people, trying to ignore the shouts of others as she stood on feet, legs and hands. ‘Matty, she can’t see you!’ He-

Thud.

The entire crowd flinched and felt an explosion reverberate in their ears. To their absolute horror, a poorly supported section of the derelict west stand of the stadium crumbled, collapsed in on itself and tumbled to the ground in a cloud of dust. One of the tanks settled in its firing position, a spiral of smoke pouring from its gun barrel.

Among the crowd, what had been despairing outrage turned into pure, raw fury. First a few stones flew, then more bricks, flares and bottles. The soldiers retreated a couple of steps, wearing body armour but not the kind of riot gear designed to deal with blunt objects hitting them all over. Ryan caught the eye of that nervy soldier again, and even from this distance, he knew. Somehow, he just knew. And his stomach turned over as he saw his daughter climb onto Mateo’s shoulders, just a few feet away, to get Natalie’s attention.
‘NATALIE! HEY! OVER HERE!’ Finally, she noticed. She turned her head and looked over at her family. Time stood still. In that split second, Mateo tried to work out what was going on behind the face covering she’d adorned. Was she happy to see them? Angry? Sad? Despite everyone else’s anger, he was relieved. Someone else had taken the bag, and she wasn’t holding any weapon. Thank fuck she hasn’t done anything. Out of the corner of his eye Mateo noticed a burst of flame. Oh no…

One of the patrol vehicles turned into a fireball as a petrol bomb flew into its side from the crowd. The vehicle was lightly armoured and fireproofed but its gun turret was open. The gunner scrambled out in a frenzy, his arms and part of his torso set alight, four of his comrades rushing to his aid while the other crew piled out of the vehicle. Mateo looked back to Natalie and caught her gaze again, and his feelings changed immediately.
What the fuck have you done?
In the near decade since the end of the war, there had been plenty of pressure cooker situations in Sameba. Injustices and mistakes had happened before – so had moments of peace, common sense prevailing, and everyone getting home safe. As time had passed, the insurgents had become more irrelevant and isolated. Peace came an inch at a time, day by day. And normally, a few idiots torching a vehicle and hospitalising a lone trooper wouldn’t have mattered. Today was different. The political situation, hot weather, the symbolism of the Dellaro, tanks on the streets – all of it together was just too much.

‘Bella, where’s Medoro? And your Dad?’
‘Matty-‘
On top of the other patrol vehicle, a young woman in a helmet too big for her head without a day’s combat experience was the one to lose her cool. She was scared and sweating, her unit’s training had been lax, and years of rotten military culture had taught her to dehumanise the Sameban people as a “problem demographic”. And now one of her comrades was on fire. A switch went in her head, and just like that, a shiver ran down her spine, followed by her finger squeezing the 50.calibre’s trigger.

----------

Geoffrey Symes had been the Minister of Defence for only a year and found it to be nowhere near as difficult a job as advertised. The real action was over and had been for a long time. What was there to do now other than seeing off a few rebels in Mareibat and hunting down the odd fascist runaway in some Sameban forest? Tonight had been a little different but after the PM came over to the Ministry of Defence amid reports of more violent protests in Aspel following the demolition announcement, but he’d been able to reassure her that all was in hand. She spoke to the relevant man on the ground herself, then when he came calling again, she’d delegated to Symes. Giving the Colonel a verbal dressing down had been satisfying at least. It felt good to tell some jumped-up squaddie what real leadership looked like. The PM was pleased and went on her merry way.

Now there was a phone call. Why, at this hour, was there a phone call? Some kind of complication?
‘This is Symes. Who am I speaking to? Yes. Yes…thank you. General! Thank you for the briefing earlier. I know the Prime Minister really appreciated it. You have something for me?’ Symes had told most of his staff to go home, and so he sat alone on his desk with the secure land line in hand. ‘Yes…’ His self-satisfied smile turned to ash. Symes listened gravely to his caller, without saying a word for a whole minute. When the time came to speak, he didn’t know what to say. ‘I…er….hold on a minute.’ Symes lowered the handset, staggered over to his armchair and collapsed into it. He had his head in his hands. ‘How many? Right. Ok…we uh, you I mean, need to get the general staff together. I don’t care where they are. I need to go and speak to the PM again. General, before you go – and just in case this wasn’t obvious already – if anyone speaks to the press, I want them on a court martial. Am I absolutely clear? Thank you.’

He put the phone down and sat deathly quiet in his dimly lit office. His whole demeanour had shifted. Symes had realised that, just like that, he was probably toast. So, he picked up the phone again. ‘Yeah, Jess, I- morning to you too. Can you get hold of Liam and the rest of the team? Good. We need everyone up and in now. Yes, I’m aware its two in the bloody morning, it doesn’t matter – they’ll get overtime won’t they? And clear my schedule, I’m pretty certain there will be cabinet in a few hours.’ Symes reached under his desk and pulled out an old Falourr Banger Whiskey, a fine Euran delicacy and successful export fit for any occasion. Tonight he’d need it for the grief. He overcame his inner existential dread to flick on the nearby digital radio.

’…this is EBC World News. This is Miranda Perry from Bastion. Its two o’clock. The news – in the early hours of this morning, shots were fired by Euran security forces during a riot in the northeastern city of Aspel, resulting in an unknown number of casualties. It is unclear what caused the use of force by the authorities, but reports from the scene, including distressing footage taken by our local team, suggest that dozens of casualties may have been incurred. A number of media outlets on social media are now reporting that armoured vehicles, including tanks, were used in a failed attempt to destroy the Aspel Dellaro, a football stadium marked today for immediate demolition by the Provisional Government. This is a developing story and we will be returning to it to provide the latest for our listeners throughout the early hours. In other news…’

CUTOFF FOR GROUP STAGE MD2.

'Hello, this is the EFA helpdesk, who am I speaking to?'
'Yes, this is Hjuborgsson Tamsson-Bammson. Am I speaking to the chairman of the Euran Football Association?'
'...no?'
'Right then, well, who is this?'
'This is Dave.'
'That's a good, strong name. Dave! Sounds more Euran than Craig Sinclair painted blue and gold. Very on-brand. And what position do you hold Dave?'
'I'm uh, I'm a cleaning technician.'
'You're a- hold on. What?'
'Yes, I'm responsible for the fourth and fifth floor loos, and the changing rooms for the gym, and-'
'Hold on, wind back a second. You're the cleaner?'
'Cleaning technician.'
'Ok, very funny. Who is this really? I demand to speak to someone senior this instant.'
'..I mean I said already, I'm Dave.'
'Yes and I'm Simone di Bradini, you pillock! This is just typical, you hear a good old fashioned Græntfjaller name and you start mocking me. This is bigoted, that's what it is. Its racist. Are you a racist, Dave?'
'Wooaah, mate, that's a bit steep, like I said I'm Dave, I clean, alright? Look, I'll be honest, I'm covering the phones for Dan. He said he's going to the shops to get us all beers as the execs are in Bastion for the Plane of Possibility game but to be honest, I think he's in the storeroom shagging Katie from HR again.'
'Very well. Maybe you can help me then. I represent the National Society of Græntfjall for the Protection of Infrastructure from Kraken Tyranny, or NSGPIKT for short-'
'Catchy!'
'-don't make me get angry, sonny. You won't like me when I'm angry. Anyway, our national team are playing in Oakstone tonight, and many of my members - and we have a lot of members, loads of them, more than anyone else, we've got the biggest members - are asking if this "Oak House" stadium is kraken-proofed.'
'I'm sorry, what? Kraken-proofed?'
'What's that tone you are taking with me, Dave? Kraken damage is a serious issue. And let me tell you, when you've seen a kraken tear through wooden houses, ships and piers, you wouldn't laugh when I ask why a football stadium made of oak doesn't have a kraken risk assessment ANYWHERE on your organisation's website!'
'...ok so, I think really you might want to talk to our engineering and security department, but to be honest mate I think you're being a bit daft? Like, I went to Oakstone for a National Cup game once, and I'm pretty sure it just has a kind of prettied up wall outside to look like its made of wood. Its not like, actually made of wood. Y'know what I mean?'
'Yes, but I am not reassured whatsoever. Do you take me for a fool Dave? There's been no risk assessment. The stadium doesn't have a certificate. For all I know, you're sending twenty two players and god knows how many fans to their deaths every time the place hosts a match!'
'Oakstone isn't even near the sea mate, seriously, keep your hair on.'
'HOW DARE YOU! How dare you mock me for my follicle impairment? I'll have you know that I have a SERIOUS condition causing this bald patch, plus YEARS of stress and hardship DEFENDING THE KRAKEN-FEARING PEOPLES OF THIS MULTIVERSE from the MENACE of kraken violence...'
'Alright, come on lad, I have no idea what you're on about now. We're not supposed to do this normally but I'm going to hang up, because this has to be a pisstake.'
'Idiots and knaves! You're condemning good men and women to the most appalling-'

This serves as an epilogue of sorts to my WCQ87 RP line (although you don't need to read it to understand this RP). Also, although Ji Weibo did miss a penalty, Yuezhou were largely the better team during MD2; Wang Jiahui's suggestion otherwise is colored by his own political bias.

Xihaishi, Xilindao, The People’s Federation of Yuezhou*

Two years and thirty-five days ago, Wang Jiahui had left the Copa Rushmori to fight rebels in Nangang for the People’s Federation of Yuezhou. While recovering from a concussion sustained there, he had missed the military coup that had seemingly consigned the People’s Federation to the dustbins of history, and turned him from a multimillionaire celebrity footballer to a prisoner of war. Since then, he had been passed from military hospital to military hospital, before finally breaking out...and then immediately being captured by a group of northern freedom fighters, who took him back to Nangang on their way to assassinate the governor of Nanhai.

After escaping Nangang by the skin of his teeth, Wang had then traveled through Sangau and Shimen, living off of scraps as he desperately made his way through a war zone that had seen some of the most brutal fighting of the Yue Civil War. He’d finally reached the coast, done unspeakable things in order to get onto a ferry, and now, after two years, he had finally returned to the People’s Federation - now confined to the island of Xilindao, but still indubitably the last bastion of socialism in Yuezhou. Now, after the longest two years of his life, he was home.

What was home now? For a few months, it hadn’t been in Yuezhou at all, but Dewayo in Nyowani Kitara. A longtime socialist ally of the People’s Federation and brothers in arms against the rising tide of capitalism that had consumed Graintfjall and Tikariot, the People’s Republic had offered Ren Qiang asylum after he’d escaped military captivity. The announcement of the government-in-exile had roused support of Yue People’s Army members purged for their loyalty to Ren, and the ensuing movement had taken control of the vital port of Xihaishi. Taking advantage of the crumbling of the National People’s Revolutionary Committee’s authority, they had then gone the extra mile and captured the entirety of the island, holding off all attempts to recapture it until Ren Qiang returned to declare the second People’s Federation. Despite international condemnation and occasional blockades, Xilindao had become a bastion of Yue socialism that attracted former party loyalists from across the nation.

He’d cried when he had set foot on the island, and now that representatives of the People’s Federation had led him to his new luxury apartment, where he had been allowed to stay indefinitely while they tried to work out a new national team for him to play on, he was emotional again. A succession of increasingly important guests had dropped by to check on him, culminating in Ren Qiang himself, the steadfast Premier who had survived revolutions, military coups, and exile, who had welcomed him home with open arms. He was just relaxing now, back in his element and trying to see if he could tempt any of his former teammates onto the new National Football Team of the People’s Federation of Yuezhou while watching the no-longer-Red Dragons be pinned back by Ancharmunn on the television.

Certainly, there would be challenges ahead. The World Cup Committee had inexplicably recognized the United Republics as the representatives of Yuezhou, despite the People’s Federation only having vacated that spot due to a military coup. The capitalist vultures in the likes of Graintfjall and Mavinet had been circling the People’s Federation for some time, as well, and the majority of Rushmore had recognized the new government already, making the People’s Federation illegitimate. But they had an island of their own, they had a government, and they had the will of the people at their backs.

And, if Wang Jiahui kept it up, they would soon have a national football team. He knew it wouldn’t be easy - he hadn’t played in two years spent in captivity or on the run, and there was precious little talent around him. But it was the only way forward. And, as Ji Weibo, of all people, who had just fought Liu Huiying for the right to take a late penalty, sent his spot-kick into the stars, Wang Jiahui knew that conceding the fate of Yue football to the United Republics was never going to be an option.

CR37 MD2: Yuezhou 2 - 0 Ancharmunn
Lineup: Guo; Ren, Han (C), Zhu; Kang, Yang, Li (Chen 68'), Reeve (Yuan 74'); Wen, Liu; Huang (Ji 57')
Goals: Liu 35', Han 64'
The Dragons secured three points again over Ancharmunn, ensuring their passage to the Round of 16 - although whether they face regional titans Cassadaigua or recent World Cup hosts Taeshan, the latter likely Lu Jialan's preferred matchup, will be decided in Benedict Lane soon against Pasarga. The win was an assured one, a testament to the Dragons' stability at the back under Lu. Liu Huiying scored relatively early off of a devastating counterattack after a period of fruitless attacks from Ancharmunn, with Wen Xiaohui providing yet another assist via a gorgeous through-ball. With the lead secured, Yuezhou were again able to sit back and defend relentlessly, and captain Han Jian managed to double their lead with a powerful header. The only blemish on a strong performance came late, when controversial young striker Ji Weibo fought Liu Huiying for the right to take a penalty that the latter had won - before missing horribly to deny Yuezhou a third goal that could've broken a tie with the Wanderers in the event of an MD3 draw.

Lineup to face Pasarga (3-4-2-1): Guo; Ren, Han, Yuan; Kang, Yang, Chen, Zhu; Wen, Liu; Huang
Against admittedly superior opposition, Lu Jialan has seemingly decided to park the bus even more than usual, using fullback-turned- centerback Zhu Aiguo as a wingback in place of Diadora Reeve, and preferring the solidity of Chen Xiwei to the energy of Li Jing in the midfield pivot. While a scoreless draw wouldn't actually win the group - instead sending the group title to a coin flip between Yuezhou and Pasarga - Lu Jialan has apparently decided that it is their best shot at getting a result, although the likes of Reeve, Li Jing, Tao Beiliang, and Luo Dan could all provide additional bite on the attack if Yuezhou fall behind early.

ROTATED MYTANAR TEAM DOES THE JOB
LATE GOAL FOR TVEIDALEN MAKES FOR A NERVOUS FINISH BUT MUCH-CHANGED TEAM SEALS THE THREE POINTS

by Nevenka Planinc

MYTANIJA 2-1 TVEIDALEN
MYT: Savicevic 15’, Derajevic 37’
TVE: Adolvsson 79’

MYT: 1. Kasun; 15. P. Odonelec, 3. Savicevic, 4. Anac (sub. Obadko 63’), 5. Isaev (c) (sub. Vukovic 55’); 16. Brkljacic, 17. Kupresak, 18. Ajanovic; 19. Vlahovic, 21. Derajevic (sub. Nanusevski 78’), 20. Gajic

TVE: 1. Ljungborg; 2. Acciaio (sub. Arvidsson 63’), 4. Santini, 5. Evangelista, 3. Alvarsson; 6. Stendahl (sub. Ingesson 70’); 10. Blom, 7. Magnusson (sub. Paulsen 70’), 8. Stabile, 11. Herbertsson; 9. Adolvsson

Lev Repin made seven changes to his starting line-up for the game against Tveidalen, the team who were expected to be Group F’s whipping boys coming into the tournament and for much of the game viewers wouldn’t have been able to tell that this was supposedly some of the national team’s second-string such was the level of comfort in the performance. Mytanija retained possession well and didn’t allow Tveidalen a sniff of the Mytanar goal until well into the second-half in what was an impressive showing, but that changed as Rodolfo Gallo made his substitutions and Tveidalen switched from their defensive 4-5-1 formation to a slightly more progressive 4-4-2 and Hans Adolvsson’s well-taken goal ten minutes from time made for a nervous ending to the game for Mytanija.

This fixture saw the entirety of Mytanija’s midfield and front three changed, with Repin using the match to see what his back-up options can do in a competitive tournament game. Branko Brkljacic is a man with bags of experience having made over 50 appearances for the national team and he came in to man the base of midfield instead of Alen Hrdaljko, ahead of him Vilim Kupresak and Sefir Ajanovic (one of the scorers against Crystalline Caverns) came in for Tahir Fejzuli and Jasno Odonelec respectively. Brajko Gavrilovic and Boris Kalinic made way on the wings for Dalibor Vlahovic – Gavrilovic’s new team mate at 1896 Ebor, where he’ll be playing more of a central midfield role – and FK Arsika’s new signing Kemal Gajic. Anton Derajevic started ahead of Jezdimir Ocokoljic following his goal in the tournament opener, giving Mytanija’s key man a rest after a high intensity title-winning domestic season.

The start of the game took on very much the same tone as Mytanija’s performance against Crystalline Caverns, with the Mytanar team hogging possession and trying to move the Tveidalen defence out of shape with clever movement. It seemed to be paying dividends, Anton Derajevic going close with a header from just outside the six-yard box inside the opening ten minutes, but the first goal of the game came from an altogether different source. Kemal Gajic won a free-kick out on the right after skipping by Nerio Acciaio around a quarter of an hour into the game and Sefir Ajanovic trotted out to whip it in. The big boys came up from the back, Grigorij Savicevic and Mojmir Anac hulking over the Tveidalen penalty area and Ajanovic’s delivery was wicked – in the proverbial corridor of uncertainty between the goalkeeper and the defenders – and Savicevic stole in to turn the ball in. It wasn’t the prettiest goal Mytanija have scored under Lev Repin, rather shinned in by Savicevic, but it put the team 1-0 up and on their way.

Tveidalen’s shape improved a little after this, they packed the midfield and their defensive line became a little more disciplined. They remained uninterested whenever Anton Derajevic tried to lure them into midfield positions, sticking to their task of maintaining their defensive line across the width of their penalty area. This could have frustrated Mytanija but instead they remained patient, probing for gaps in the defence and trying to work space or get in behind with runs towards the by-line. The pressure eventually told, initially as Dalibor Vlahovic cracked the crossbar with a rasping effort which perhaps deserved to put Mytanija 2-0 up and then with Anton Derajevic’s second goal of the tournament to actually put Mytanija 2-0 up. It was once again good work from Vlahovic which led to it, teaming up well with Vilim Kupresak and the marauding Patrik Odonelec – starting instead of Srdan Vukovic – from his left-back/central midfield hybrid role. Kupresak played the ball out to Vlahovic who waited for Patrik Odonelec to lead the opposition’s defender away before driving past Bjarne Alvarsson and into the space Odonelec had created. Vlahovic then dribbled towards the by-line and cut the ball back for Anton Derajevic to stab in under pressure from the burly centre-back Viljar Evangelista.

In the second-half Repin kept up the theme of rotation, bringing Petr Isaev off for Srdan Vukovic and switching Patrik Odonelec over to right-back. Isaev passed the captain’s armband on to Pedja Kasun for the remainder of the game. A little later Mojmir Anac was substituted for Niksa Obadko whilst Anton Derajevic made way for Strahinja Nanusevski – earning his first ever cap – around twelve minutes from the end, just before Tveidalen’s goal. Gallo’s substitutions made his team a little more dangerous, with the hard-working Håkan Stendahl coming off for striker Gudbrand Ingesson and Jarle Magnusson for the creative Orfeo Paulsen. Paulsen got the assist for Adolvsson’s goal, sending the physically imposing striker haring through and holding off Niksa Obadko before he powered the ball past Kasun with a fine finish. Adolvsson was extremely pleased with the goal and Tveidalen looked like they had a lifeline. Unfortunately for them Mytanija kept their concentration well and went straight back into the play which made them comfortable, circulating possession and keeping the ball away from Tveidalen to run down the clock. It might not have been exciting but it was effective and it secured an important three points for Mytanija who have an excellent chance of topping the group following a perfect start to the tournament.

Mytanar scouts may have been impressed with the performance of some of the Tveidalen players and the likes of Stendahl, Blom, Adolvsson and the substitutes Ingesson and Paulsen could perhaps find homes in teams in the lower reaches of the Top League and towards the top of the Druga Liga. Many Mytanar clubs are aware of the economic reality of international club football and the Top League’s place in it relative to the current powerhouses in nations such as Audioslavia, Nephara and Eura. It means they have to operate in a different market when it comes to signing players and potential bargains such as some of the Tveidalen team could become attractive options after solid performances in tournaments like the Copa Rushmori. A finisher like Adolvsson against Mytanija here could be exactly what some Mytanar teams need and if they can get that sort of player in cheaply then all the better for them.

Repin may have been a little disappointed that Mytanija didn’t ram home their advantage with more goals once they were 2-0 up and the performance in the second-half was a little lacklustre at times, but there did seem to be a sense that the job was pretty much done until Tveidalen injected a little life into the game with their late rally. It gave him the opportunity to rotate his team and hand key players like Ocokoljic, Jasno Odonelec, Fejzuli, Hrdaljko a rest and the likes of Vukovic, Anac and Isaev reduced playing time as well. It should make for decent preparation ahead of tougher assignments in upcoming games and the time off should leave the team well-rested, hopefully for a deep run into the tournament.

Up next for Mytanija is the group’s top seed Valladares at the Sasky in a game which could well decide who tops the group and secure themselves the supposedly ‘easier’ tie in the round of sixteen. Valladares won their opener against the group’s fourth seeds Tveidalen 1-0 and then lost by the same score to Crystalline Caverns, a less than convincing start to the Copa Rushmori for a team who bookmakers might have felt would be figuring in the latter stages of the tournament. Lev Repin will hope that he can find some weak spots in the ageing Valladar defence, but their unusual 3-2-2-3 formation could pose some problems for Mytanija too. The tactical battle will be enthralling, with plenty of potential for overloads at the base of each team’s midfield and the chance of each team going 3 vs 3 between their defensive line and the opposition’s forwards. It could make for a really open and high quality encounter, Repin will be hoping that his tactical nous can ensure Mytanija come out on the right side of it.

Savicevic continues to impress and is a good example of where the Mytanar game is heading

Grigorij Savicevic has had a really outstanding year, winning the Mytanar Top League with Atletik Thessia and ending up as Under-23 Player of the Season as a result of his top-class form throughout the campaign. He was a major part of Atletik’s resurgence this season and Robin Hjik – a man who knows top players when he sees them – waxed lyrical about the young centre-back multiple times over the course of the year, including the following: “He’s a defender who knows how to defend, but the really great thing about Grigorij is that he can start attacks from defence and any top team knows how invaluable that is when you’re facing opposition who just want to batten down the hatches and sit deep against you. It provides you with a spare man going forwards and he’s so comfortable with the ball that it’s almost like having an extra midfielder who can push on from the back.”

High praise indeed. Savicevic may be turning his sights onto bigger things, he’s already won the league with Atletik after joining a couple of years ago from Crvena Zvezda for an undisclosed fee when they were experiencing a bit of financial trouble. He’s extremely interested in playing abroad and appears to have all the right qualities to do so, even showing his prowess in the opposition’s box by getting on the scoresheet against Tveidalen. As knowledge grows about Savicevic around the footballing world the time when he decides to move on from Atletik will be growing ever closer – if he continues to perform solidly during this Copa Rushmori then that process will only be accelerated further.

There is a growing acceptance around Mytanar football that the Mytanar Top League occupies a secondary position in international club football, it cannot compete financially with some of the best leagues as it did in its heyday and this has led to many clubs focusing more on strong youth development than trying to compete with clubs from the top leagues in the transfer market. Even reputable, historic clubs like Atletik Thessia, Liria Prizren and 1896 Ebor are cognisant of this and have altered their recruitment policies as a result. All three are increasingly focusing on trying to buy up the best young domestic talent – providing smaller clubs with a financial boost – before flipping these players on for a large profit, selling them to the financially powerful teams from the multiverse’s top leagues. It allows the Mytanar clubs to have opportunities to compete in IFCF football as they assemble some of the best domestic talent for short periods, but it also allows the domestic game to become financially stable in a way which it hasn’t always been (particularly since the end of the Mytanar Conflict) when these players are moved on.

This doesn’t mean that the likes of Atletik, Liria and 1896 Ebor are completely forgetting their own youth production lines of course, but given their history and position within the domestic game – as well as their financial clout – they are able to combine their own young talent with the best from around the rest of the country and it makes for a potent mix. Grigorij Savicevic plying his trade for Atletik for the past two seasons is a fantastic example of this and his performances have got Atletik winning league titles and back into the IFCF Champions’ League again. Atletik recognise that now could be the best time to move the player on due to the fantastic season he has had and given Savicevic’s desire to test himself in a top league in the near future (as well as opportunities to compete in the latter stages of the IFCF competitions), we may see him sold in the upcoming transfer window. The young centre-back is probably the best example of where the Mytanar game is heading and we will see more of the nation’s top young talents moving abroad over the next few years as clubs mimic Atletik’s new approach.

Naturally clubs will want to ensure that they have ready-made replacements who can slot in for these talented youngsters when they decide the time is right to move them on and Mytanar football is particularly well-placed to do this given the country’s relationship with sports as an expression of political strength and the support for high quality and accessible sports facilities across the nation. Football clubs have outstanding, well-funded youth set-ups, with access to training facilities which can be used to develop those replacements and it’s telling that Atletik have been blooding the highly-rated Mytanar-Ketioulais centre-back Bigger Mbala-Ekakia during this past season, giving him limited tastes of senior football, perhaps in preparation for Savicevic’s departure. Atletik have Braco Evic – purchased from 1923 Esca as a youngster, but perhaps not quite ever reaching his full potential – as well as 16 year old Adnan Sulejmanovic coming through the ranks in central defence too. This sense of planning ahead, with the next player readied to come off the production line just as another is leaving, is extremely obvious in the Savicevic situation and it makes his expected departure the perfect case study to analyse this new approach to the transfer market that many Mytanar clubs are looking to employ.

Fans making the most of Eura visit,
By Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights

For a soccer dominant nation within our region, Eura had never been a place that I had travelled too. I didn’t think all that much of it, chalking it up to being due to my different assignments throughout my writing career just never sending me here. After all, as many of you know, I do more than just cover soccer, but will be assigned to all of the major sporting competitions that we participate in. Sometimes, there are choices that need to be made, but right now the stars have aligned for me to focus on the Copa Rushmori. My daughter Chloe is doing a great job covering the NSCAA tournament which the Concord Heights Times was generous enough to allow her to do as she finishes up her senior year at the University of Concord Heights. The World Baseball Classic and the World Cup of Hockey are on the horizon, but I will be remaining in Eura for as long as the competitions conflict, and watching those other sports and covering them from here.

It turns out, it really was not just me, though. Cassadagan teams just do not have a history of playing in Eura. We’re not going to play each other in World Cup qualifying, and this soccer-crazed nation stays out of other sports that we also participate in. They don’t host a ton, either, so this is a more unique opportunity than it seemed to be at first glance. What was the first thing I noticed about this nation? Well, I hate to say, the traffic. Sure, there were people that tried to tell me to use trains, but I am stubborn and from a car-loving nation. It didn’t take long for me to realize why I got that advice that I did, and my staff here quickly researched train timetables to get around from now on. Otherwise, if you forget about all the gender differences, I didn’t see much different, socially, about Eura than I would Cassadaigua. It’s been a good place to be, and thanks to the days off that exist within the schedule and my otherwise light schedule, I have been able to do some sightseeing.

Most of my time here, however, will be spent at Troutbridge, and this beautiful city that the hosts have been grateful enough to place Cassadaigua in for the entire group stage. By virtue of being the top seed, the Fillies do not have to travel between two stadiums, and it is really allowed me to set up shop here at Resthouse, relax, and not have to deal with the traffic more than necessary. Many Cassdagans, and I mean, a whole lot of them, have made the trip, and many are also planning on staying for the entire group stage. I talked to one, a nurse from Victoriaville named Christina, who told me, “I love this sport more than any other sport, so I try to travel as much as I can. All of my travel is built around sporting events, and what a great opportunity to go to a place that we are very familiar with but don’t head to very often. We’ve been talking to some of the locals here, and I think they have begun to notice the very large contingent of Cassadagan fans that have come here. I had a couple compliment us on how supportive and loud we can get. It’s pretty cool to get that live. I knew the people here were very passionate about soccer, and it’s a great chance to talk to them about the world’s greatest game without a head to head game in the way. I mean, there were not many Eurans who were expecting Thibaea to defeat us, I’m sure.” They certainly didn’t!

Now, as for the game against Mapletish, we again saw a lot of pink and black in the stands as the Dragons hoped to not play like minnows. At the very least, they needed to earn a draw in this game to have a chance at advancement, considering they lost to Taeshan in the opener. The result was a much different game, a hard fought battle between the two sides. Cassadaigua was a little more conservative than I would like to see in the early moments, but I think the credit for that goes to the midfield of Mapletish, especially Austin Sonnie and Moseses Quin in the center of the pitch. It may have been Brittany Byers plan to attack this way, then on the wings, as Joe Bobbie is considered the teams best defensive midfielder. As a unit, they played really well, but on the flip side, the Fillies were just as effective at stopping rushes of the Dragons. There would not be a lot of offensive chances for either side in the first half, and when they did happen the defense and the keepers were up to the task, and the first half ended scoreless. For Mapletish, that was a win.

Early in the second, Cassadaigua began to have more success utilizing long balls from the defense. This is not typically the way the team operates, since it takes away from Morgan Rosenblatt and Meghan Wolcott a bit, but it proved to be a good adjustment, as the Fillies began to get more chances, and in the 57th minute, one of them went in the net, as Meghan Wolcott pounced on a rebound of a Madison McClain shot to make it 1-0. The young roster of Mapletish, ironically all 22 years of age (what are the odds?), showed resilience and got an equalizer in the 68th from Henry Tomomi. After that, and for a little while, it seemed as though we were heading for a 1-1 draw, but substitutions made by Byers in the 76th minute led to the Fillies once again controlling the pace of play. Against Thibaea, we saw her give the nod to Jenna Frontiera ahead of Taylor Russo, but this time it would be Russo, and Taylor made the most of it. So did Danielle Porter, who also came in at that time. Porter set up Russo well for the eventual game winner in the 85th minute.

The goal puts the Fillies at 2-0-0 in the group, and into the next round. A game against Taeshan is next, and they are also 2-0-0. It should be a great test for our team as they play this defensively strong opponent, one that is yet to concede a goal in two games. I’ll look forward to it, but in the meantime, it’s time to relax. And I have a train to catch!

Oberour Ar Moro 1 - 2 Nephara
(4-4-2) 1 - Provost; 2 - Stride, 5 - Clevinger, 6 - Brabanzon, 22 - Lind; 7 - Koerner, 15 - Horvath, 8 - Cromwell (17 - Mueller 78'), 11 - Considine (13 - Belgrade 67'); 9 - Gjasula (10 - Lovelace 72'), 21 - Basilisk
Goals: Koerner 31', Lovelace 79'

The Cormorants, historically, have been built on the back of central defenders. Specifically, defensive partnerships, often players coming through at roughly the same time who got a special bond together. The Baptism of Fire had straight-laced, professional Lukas Strongnesse and notorious brutaliser Rook Harm. Hadrian Belfast, at his peak the best defender in the world, had Tosca Marlowe, a more coltish figure who never actually left home. Scharner and Katskalidis came from nowhere to be stapled together in time for Nephara to win the World Cup. Brosch and Thorn had a relationship built on trust, then physicality, then comfort, before blossoming surprisingly to love. Brosch throwing off her sunglasses and anonymity to lean down and kiss Thorn in the aftermath of her World Cup win would become one of the iconic images of tournament history.
So now Clevinger and Brabanzon were stepping up, in the wake of their departure. Similar age. Both based in Sabrefell, though Clevinger was a half-satyr from Newrook and Brabanzon was a local. And they'd partnered each other through the U21s, too, before stepping up together. Clevinger had played the last World Cup final, and now Brabanzon was keeping pace.
Their relationship was built on something rather different, cultivated in the quiet spaces between phases of play in duller matches.
One shanked clearance sparked Brabanzon on, and she didn't have a filter at the best of times. She frowned at her feet. "You ever think maybe we got the wrong idea with these boots?"
"How so?"
"Have you ever seen a football boot that isn't just a thin leather number? Even from..." She gestured, vaguely. "Waaay back. It's all tight shoes. You ever think maybe we're doing it wrong?"
"... So you're saying the industry got off on the wrong foot."
"What? No. Fuck y-- oh, I get it. Yeah, I guess so, Niira."
"So what would be better?"
"Well, think about it. Think about it. What's wrong with your feet?"
"They aren't strong enough. And they slip and shit."
"Well, okay, if studs go into your feet your feet are fucked, but if nobody wears studs then it's fine."
Clevinger cocked her head. "What's wrong with boots, anyway?"
"It's the laces." Brabanzon sucked her teeth. "They're in the way, innit?"
"... No?"
"How is it no? How isn't it yes. I mean--"
"You're blaming your shitty clearance on shoelaces?"
"Why not?"
"What, you want, you want fucking Velcro or something instead?" Clevinger shook her head in wonder, eyes briefly flicking left to confirm that Oberour's throw-in had been defended clerkly and sent forward. The two of them started trotting forward, setting the high line.
"That'd be an improvement. But I still don't see anything wrong with feet."
"I don't see anything wrong with boots!"
"Look at your laces--"
"I'm running--"
"No, look at them!" They started to slow up as an Oberour defender headed the ball clear. It came to Cromwell, who chested the ball down and fired... well over the bar.
Clevinger used the moment to look at her boots. "What am I looking for."
"Laces, yeah?"
"Yeah, but--"
"I mean they're all ridged and shit, and there's the knot of getting them together and, I mean, tell me you can't do better."
"Feet have veins. Those are weird."
Brabanzon gave her a pitying look. "Veins aren't gonna send a shot off target," she drawled.
"Sure, but--"
"What about a boot? One of those iron-toed work boots."
"You can't run in that, Misk."
"Oh, yeah... well, we don't need pace so much, do we? Maybe we get boots and everyone else keeps their fancy leather shoes."
"... I think I'm good with shoes."
"Are you? Well, suit yourself. I'm gonna do some talk to my suppliers after this."
The thought stuck in Clevinger's head. Were laces really a sign of playing the game wrong? Surely, not. Unless...
She kept thinking on it right up until a diagonal ball rasped on by. She stretched out a leg. The ball bumped over the laces, over her boot, and reached a target who was now through on goal.
"Ah, shit."
"See?" screamed Brabanzon as she raced back to cover. "See?!"

Nyowani Kitara upsets Mavinet 3-1 to stun Rushmore at CR37

Nyowani Kitara players celebrate a goal in their stunning 3-1 upset win over Mavinet

CULPAPY, EURA- Nyowani Kitara stunned the nation and all of Rushmore today, as in Eura, they pulled off a massive 3-1 upset victory over Mavinet on Matchday 2 to earn three points at Copa Rushmori 37, and give themselves a more than fighting chance to qualify for the Copa Rushmori knockout stages.

Nyowani Kitara, as the Pot 4 team, and the only member of their group who does not play in World Cup competition, were widely expected to show up in Eura, lose three games, mostly by wide margins, and bow out of the tournament almost as quickly as they arrived, with nobody remembering us. And our first game went according to script. We were absolutely annihilated by the group's current leaders, Sargossa, to the tune of a 6-1 loss. It was brutal and not pretty for our players. We were beaten in every phase of the game. Our defense was sluggish, our offense was terrible, our midfield was dominated. There was really no way to understate the gravity of the loss.

Player-Coach Tage Hermansson told reporters that the magnitude of the loss had caused everybody to do a lot of soul-searching. "Look, we're here to do our people proud." Hermansson told members of the media after that game. "We understand that we are minnows in this world. But we don't want to be out here embarrassing ourselves, and getting beat 6-1, by anybody, at the first game of a major tournament is disastrous. When Angonga scored, we got excited. But after Alfonso Barrueco scored his second, then Sargossa got into a rhythym and a pace where we simply could not keep up. Kudos to them- but we do not want to repeat a loss like this one."

And while the team kept the same setup, they came out in the second game ready to fire, and ready to play. They wore the jerseys that they rarely are- the Kitara Yellow jerseys. And at the beginning of the game, they went after Mavinet. The Player-Coach talked about the strategy after the game. "Look, we know our place in the world. Our best chance to go out here and get three points, contrary to popular belief, is not to sit back and let them come at us, and play for the draw. No- we go out and take risks early, surprise 'em, and then see if we can hold on."

And just like Matchday 1, it would be Angonga who would give our squad an early lead. A 9th minute goal by him gave our team a 1-0 lead. Nordlander Leonard Lundquist doubled the lead just 3 minutes later, with a curling shot that the Mavinet goalkeeper fumbled straight into the back of the net. And just like that, stunning everybody, it was 2-0 just 12 minutes in to Nyowani Kitara. Our fans were going nuts, while Mavinet's fans were stunned. They started to control possession from that point forward, but simply couldn't break us down.

They didn't get on the board until late in the match- an 87th minute header meant an equalizer was in sight. But our boys counter-attacked with power and speed, as a counter-attack saw Vilgot Westermark beat the goalkeeper one on one. A 3-1 victory for Nyowani Kitara. As the players celebrated with fans, the result turned the group upside down. Mavinet was still ahead on overall goal differential, but Nyowani Kitara is now on the brink of the knockout stages.

We played last place Eastfield Lodge on Matchday 3. A win, combined with a Mavinet loss or draw to first place Sargossa, would put us through to the Round of 16 in Rushmore's tournament. Player-Coach Tage Hermansson encouraged fans by saying his team believes in themselves. "Look- things are only impossible if you say they are. This is a team that is unified, and has our eyes on the prize. We've won once- why can't we win agian? It will not be an easy task. Eastfield Lodge has been around, doing this forever. But we're playing with house money at this point- let's go get a dub, right?"

Nyowani Kitara ticket interest for these first two matches was fairly low, due to fans expecting that both matches would be blowout losses. But with the knockouts on the line, interest has shot up in Nyowani Kitara. All sorts of flights are being booked from Dewayo to Culpapy, and there may be a ton of New Kitarans arriving in Eura ahead of the match without tickets, creating what would possibly be chaotic scenes at street parties in Culpapy.

OTHER NEWS
- The People's Republic of Nyowani Kitara has officially appointed Justin Rodongo, the former Deputy Ambassador to Tikariot, as the Ambassador to the People's Federation of Yuezhou. In his remarks regarding his own appointment in Dewayo, he said that "The United Republics of Yuezhou is an oligarchy by, for, and of the rich, and the international community should demand its entire resignation immediately to hand power back to Ren Qiang, the true representative of the people of Yuezhou."
- The Radical right-wing government in Graentfjall looks to be on the brink of collapse as they look to path a wealth transfer bill from the poor and working class of the country, to the rich. It is being inaccurately referred to in local media in that country as a 'welfare reform bill'. The Nyowani Kitara foreign ministry refused to comment in the internal politics of their much larger, much stronger northern neighbor.

Two clubs confirmed to join La Liga Hispinas for 2204
Clubs from Malklan and Mascardo enter the league, with a further two clubs pending approval

MANDRID - While the first professional football league of Hispinas is kicking off with six teams, there might be a potential chance ten clubs will participate the next season in 2204.

The task force led by Manolito Padron recently announced that they have formalized the acceptance of two clubs to Hispinas' professional football league, with clubs approving the application of Malklan CF and Dinamo Mascardo to enter the league at the start of 2204 season. The two clubs will join the six founding clubs - FC Cebuenas, Royal Mandrid, Atletikoa Haranurdina, Azucena CF, Errege Iparekialdeko, and Gimnastic Vigano, in the La Liga Hispinas once the current season ends. In the last year of the homegrown rule, players raised in Malklan and Mascardo respectively who are playing for LLH teams this season can be signed to play for them, but it is the prerogative of the player if they will join the two expansion clubs next season.

The club in question is Gimnastic Vigano, with Geralda Uriarte stating that she wants to stay in Vigano for the 2204 season. The Magdalena FA based club has players from both Mascardo and Malklan, and most of the players aside from Uriarte have expressed interest to play for their hometown clubs. This will force Los Rojonegros who are managed by Eduin Palacios, and are yet to score points in the league this season, to do a full scale rebuild next season. Malklan CF is a club formed by the AT Malklan government organization to promote tourism in the Punta de Malklan area, while Dinamo Mascardo is owned by the CEO of Uverennost, a Mascardo-based mens' product company. Both clubs are participating in the Copa de la Reino in Group C where no LLH club is with them.

There have been rumors that two additional clubs would join the already announced eight clubs to increase the number of teams to ten. One rumored is from Piedramarilla or Murosur, and the other is either in Haranbehera which may be blocked by Errege, or one from Felipamerigo. Nothing has been confirmed yet by the task force whether this is official or not.

The picture switches to a magnificent frigate that is anchored just off the Atlantic City coastline. The sails are rigged, the cannons have been removed, not to give anybody any funny ideas. The three master is a beauty of a ship, black sails furled up, the Poseidon figurehead gleaming in the sunlight, the ship’s wooden planks stained from years out at sea. On top of the main mast the Jolly Roger is fluttering in the wind together with two other flags, completing the look of an authentic vessel from the golden years of piracy.

The camera zooms in on Blake Church and Charles State standing on board of the HMS Poseidon right at the gunwale as the drone comes closer. They are both dressed up in their best pirate gear.

Blake Church: Ahoy, mateys! Welcome to the HMS Poseidon!

Charles State: A beautiful ship it is and the perfect location for our next match, one that the world has not seen before, featuring two of the most bitter rivals the CWF has ever seen on top of it!

Blake Church: They nearly bashed each other’s heads in at our Confliction PPV in a now iconic Moon vs. Shadow match that still has the fans and media talking and they had announced that the war was not over.

Charles State: The first match was on land and now they are taking to the seas in the CWF’s, and possibly the world’s, first ever Pirate Ship Plunder match! Both contenders are currently making their way to this proud vessel in obviously separate boats…

The camera switches to show two boats being rowed from the shore towards the ship, one with the Chosen in their grey suits rowing in perfect unison with a scowling Elisha looking over in the bow, while the other one has the twelve druids propelling with The Shadow standing unmoving at the stern of his boat, staff in hand, looking at the Moonchild’s boat, the look on his face as stoic as ever.

Blake Church: Now the rules for this match are fairly simple. One member of either team has to climb all the way to the top of the main mast and capture the other team’s flag to win. Easy, right?

Charles State: Well, the little detail is that it will not just be The Shadow and Elisha competing, but all members of the Chosen and Druids as well, so it is kind of a 26-person match, making it the biggest non-battle royale match in CWF’s history and arguably also the one with the biggest “ring”. And an additional stipulation is that if someone is thrown off the ship, they are out of the match, so this could turn into a quite brutal affair, because I can tell you, it is a long, long way down from all the way up there.

He points upwards toward the top of the main mast and the picture cuts to a camera mounted at the very top, really showing the true height of the ship.

Blake Church: And if someone gets thrown off from up there you can only pray that they will not miss the water, otherwise they would be in some serious, serious trouble. Also all cannons, swords, knives etc. have been removed from the ship, but that being said, these gentlemen have proved in the past that there are still plenty of items that could be used, or abused, to aid their cause.

Charles State: The question has been raised prior to this, if there will be a referee on the ship and if so, what his actual role would be. So, yes there is, Scott Dean has been assigned to this match, even though I heard that it was more a case of nobody else wanting to spend some time in the crow’s nest, but that is besides the point. His role is to officially declare the winner in case there would be an attempt to capture both flags at the same time.

He puts his hands to his mouth and yells upwards.

Charles State: HEY SCOTT!

The picture switches to show Scott Dean sitting in the crow’s nest right next to the flags, looking decidedly uncomfortable up there.

Blake Church: Crunch time is nearing, the teams have arrived!

A drone camera shows both teams scaling the sides of the ship via rope ladders before being led towards the opposite ends of the ship to avoid any early escalation, remaining in each other’s line of sight nevertheless. The Chosen take off their suits, revealing grey wrestling suits, while the Druids do the same, leaving them in black tights and black, sleeveless shirts with their respective rune on them, several of them with war paint in their faces, hair braided or just wild, showing a distinct difference to the clean-cut Chosen and their uniform look.

Jim Gunt: This is a match that many fans have been looking forward to ever since Elisha and The Shadow’s last encounter at Confliction and it is an impressive setting.

Mike Rolash: Yes, very much so, and it also is interesting to see how extremely different the two teams are, the Chosen all clean and orderly, looking like a machine and on the other side the Druids that look like a rag tag band that they just pulled out of the woods, but they have proven before that looks indeed can be deceiving.

Jim Gunt: All the familiar faces are there, hold on, there is one druid that still has his robe on and it looks like it is the replacement of Walcott, Blake, can you check, please?

Blake Church: I’m on my way!

He approaches the remaining druid and taps his shoulder. The man turns around, pushes back his hood and…

Mike Rolash: OH MY GOD! Dorian Hawkhurst! IT IS DORIAN!

A big pop of surprise goes through the assembled crowd upon the reveal.

Jim Gunt: We are used to surprises around here, but this one I did NOT expect! Well, I guess nobody expected.

Ataxia: Like the Spanish Inquisition?

Mike Rolash: Aaaah! For God’s sakes, how often did I tell you to stop this sneaking up thing?

Ataxia: Hm… At least three times!

Mike Rolash: And you still don’t understand it?

Ataxia: Oh, I understand it, but when’s the last time I followed rules? AAHAAHAHAHAHAA!

With that he bounces off, leaving a clearly uncomfortable Mike Rolash behind, while Jim Gunt is trying his best to not burst out in laughter.

Charles State: Yes, this is one heck of a surprise here and I think that Elisha is probably not going to be happy about this new development!

Blake Church: OK, gentlemen, may I have your attention? The rules are clear - whoever captures the other team’s flag at the tip of the main mast wins. Whoever gets thrown off the ship and lands in the water is officially out of the match. Other than that - may God have mercy…

With this he steps to the side and watches the hordes run at each other, clashing roundabout midships into a maelstrom of fists, kicks, headbutts and more.

Jim Gunt: This promises to be a worthy rematch to Confliction! And two people are not participating so far…

Mike Rolash: No, both Elisha and The Shadow are standing unmoving, staring daggers into each other, I guess both of them waiting for the other’s first move.

In the meantime the battling Chosen and Druids are spreading out over the width of the ship, utilizing anything in sight, ropes, cudgels and more. One of the Chosen, Ahriman, is precariously dangling over the gunwale, when another grey-clad Ouroboros follower clobbers Dolgopolov over the head with a stick and races to the side of his (almost) fallen fellow. Dajjal yanks the stocky Swiss Druid, Detwyler, off of him, dispatching of him with a high knee before bringing Ahriman back up. Their brief solace does not last, though, as Dorian Hawkhurst comes barreling through, knocking both to the deck, but the Demon of Sobriety does not stop or look back, but is on a direct path to Elisha, who takes up a battle stance, a cruel smile playing around the corners of his mouth.

Jim Gunt: Looks like the Moonchild is getting involved now, too!

Mike Rolash: He sidesteps Dorian’s charge, sending him into the wall of the STRUCTURE.

Charles State: Guys, there is more happening over here!

The camera cuts to The Shadow using the momentary distraction to make a run for the shrouds and start climbing up the ratlines. Elisha immediately springs into action, but Choronzon is in hot pursuit, having been the closest to that side of the mast. He begins to climb the shroud from underneath to save on time and manages to grab onto one of The Shadow’s feet, yanking down with his full body weight by letting go of the shroud. Literally pinned to the spot, The Shadow tries to get his other leg through the ropes to kick off the leader of the Chosen, but a quickly approaching Elisha cuts into his concentration. Suddenly the weight is gone as Choronzon is hit by a cudgel thrown by an unknown hand, and he topples backwards, half sliding, half tumbling down the lower parts of the ratlines, coming to rest against the gunwale as Elisha reaches him.

Jim Gunt: Uh oh, that is a pretty precarious position for The Shadow here!

Mike Rolash: Elisha could just throw him overboard right now and then what?

Jim Gunt: Then The Shadow would be out of the match and Elisha pretty much would have an easy path to the top.

But thankfully for the fans this battle does not end that quickly, as The Shadow manages to avoid the lunge of Elisha, rolling off the ratlines and back on deck. Elisha jumps over the ropes in pursuit of The Shadow, who darts in between and around thick lines of rope, stowed tarps and some of the debris the battle already has left behind on the deck. With Elisha close behind him, he grabs on to one of the shrouds with both hands, uses his momentum to swing himself around and hit Elisha in the back with both knees, sending him sprawling to the old wooden planks.

Blake Church: Nice use of the ship here, Elisha is still on the ground, but I think there is something else happening over on the starboard side, Charles?

Charles State: Yes, we have the first race for the top, one of the Chosen ladies, I believe Jezebel, is climbing up the ratlines over here and that really thin and tall Druid, what was his name again -

Blake Church: Fagermo?

Charles State: Fagermo! Thanks! He is right at her heels.

Jezebel briefly halts her ascent in an attempt to kick at her pursuer, but misses, allowing him to almost get alongside her. She hits him with a vicious elbow to the side of the head, causing him to almost lose grip. As he hangs off with one arm, trying to regain his balance, she brings her boot down on his hand and he lets go with a scream, bouncing off the ratlines a bit further down and all the way into the waters of the Atlantic.

Mike Rolash: One down, many more to go!

Jim Gunt: Haha, funny. Not. Anyways, Fagermo is out of the match, so right now there is a number advantage for Elisha and the Chosen, but maybe not for long!

With a satisfied smile on her face Jezebel continues her climb, but the smile is quickly wiped off her face as another flying wooden cudgel hits her in the ribs, causing her to let out a pained yelp.

Charles State: Looks like we found the source of the cudgels, like the one that took Choronzon down, Mr. McLean from the Druids seems to have taken up axe throwing or something, because his precision with those things is impressive!

Blake Church: What is less impressive, though, is these dark clouds that are coming in from the sea right now and they are moving quite fast...

Matthias Eddy is racing up the ratlines to reach Jezebel and prevent her from continuing to climb up, taking advantage of her still trying to nurse her probably bruised ribs. At first he tries to grab her leg and pull her off her perch, but she grabs on with both arms, trying to wedge herself in. While they are wrestling back and forth up there, Elisha is trying to find The Shadow, who seems to have disappeared among the chaos, sending kicks and punches upon any Druid in his way on his way to where Jezebel and Eddy are trading punches, propelled forward by the prospect to get his hands on Eddy again after the water torture just three weeks ago.

Charles State: And affirmative, Elisha is on his way up!

Mike Rolash: And he does not look happy!

As he gets close to the ratlines, Eddy spots him and shoots him a withering look. With renewed vigour, Eddy grabs Jezebel, yanks her off the ropes and SIDE SUPLEX ONTO ELISHA!

Blake Church: Holy shit! I have to check this out to see they are ok!

Jim Gunt: This was insane!

The two falling people missed Elisha by a hair, barely touching him, but both Jezebel and Eddy are sprawled on the floor, the wind knocked out of them from the harsh impact. Elisha is seething with anger at both the almost successful attack and also seeing one of his Chosen almost motionless on the deck. He bends down to grab Eddy when The Shadow flies at him with a running drop kick that throws Elisha against a crate, shattering it under the impact. In the background Babalon is hitting Carvanha with a super kick before Heresiarch picks him up and throws him over the gunwale and off the ship just as The Shadow is taken down hard by Choronzon and Armilus with a brutal double clothesline.

Jim Gunt: 2-nil Chosen!

Mike Rolash: Does any of these freaks have to win?

Ataxia: No, because I still win!

Mike Rolash (jumping up): For God’s Sakes, man! Stop it, stop it, STOP IT!

Ataxia: Aaaw, you’re no fun!

Jim Gunt: While we have you here, Ataxia, were you aware of the fact that Dorian Hawkhurst would be part of the Druids tonight?

Ataxia: How could I not? The writing was on the walls for all to see!

Mike Rolash: It was?

Ataxia: Our matches have all just been to get to know each other better and prepare everybody!

Charles State: Excuse my, guys, but we have a thing going on over here!?

Just as we get back to the Poseidon, Detwyler is plowing into a group of Chosen that are just giving two other Druids a beatdown, his sheer force driving two of them over the edge of the ship, with both Incubus and Succubus headed for the water, but they manage to hold on to the stocky Swissman and take him with them into the watery depths.

Mike Rolash: Three for the price of one, finally we’re getting somewhere!

As The Shadow is climbing up one set of ratlines, the first raindrops are beginning to fall and some thunder is rolling above.

Jim Gunt: Let’s batten down the hatches, people, it’s going to get wet!

Similar to the early stages of the match, Choronzon is in hot pursuit of The Shadow, but this time on the “right” side of the ratlines. The rain is making the climb more slippery already and one slip is all Choronzon needs to get to The Shadow. He grabs on to his leg again and yanking sideways lets himself fall off the shrouds, taking the Weaver of Dreams with him through a wooden hatch into the cargo hold below.

Mike Rolash: Ouch, that must have hurt!

The remaining Chosen gather at the bottom of both ratlines leading to the top of the main mast, doing their best to fend off the druids and sheltered by his Chosen, Elisha is starting to climb up one set of ratlines, continuously looking around to see, if he could see The Shadow anywhere, but his adversary is nowhere to be seen. On the opposite side of the ship, the red-haired druid O’Fathaigh is climbing up himself, having a bit of a lead on Elisha, who is unaware of one of his opponents being closer to the goal.

Blake Church: Looks like we are starting with the races to the top here!

Jim Gunt: Elisha seems more preoccupied with The Shadow than realizing that someone else already is on his way up ahead of him!

As the ratlines converge towards the top, Elisha realizes that he is not alone and tries to rush to the futtock shrouds just underneath the top. O’Fathaigh tries to kick Elisha off, but the Moonchild manages to duck under just in time before pulling himself onto the top. O’Fathaigh manages to connect with a hard chop to the chest that has Elisha reeling for a moment, but he cannot take advantage of it as Elisha regains his balance and charges forward, hitting the Irishman in the mid-section and into the mast behind him. The thunderstorm has hit with full force now, buffeting winds making the wet top treacherous, restricting our view a bit, since we have to rely on the installed cameras along the masts and rigging, since the drones cannot operate in this weather. Elisha grabs the Druid and with all his strength pulls him away from the mast and off the top, sending him down into the water.

Mike Rolash: The endgame has begun and it looks like the Moonman is on his way to victory here!

Charles State: Not necessarily, looks like people have forsaken (no pun intended) the deck and are going for the rafters now!

Plenty of activity on the shrouds and ratlines, as several Druids and Chosen are scrambling to get up there to assist. On the deck several combatants are knocked out or barely moving with various visible injuries. The Shadow and Choronzon are emerging from below the deck on different ends of the ship, one of The Shadow’s eyes partially swollen and Choronzon limping, but both are beelining for the same ratlines to ascend to the top. As The Shadow takes his first steps up, Choronzon comes running and jumps off in order to intercept him, but out of nowhere Dorian tackles Choronzon with a sickening impact.

Jim Gunt: These men are going to feel this tomorrow!

Mike Rolash: If we can find them…

Elisha is switching his attention to the last climb to the top and the flag, but a voice stops him dead in his tracks. Matthias Eddy is standing across the top and if looks could kill, Elisha would be in Davy Jones’ Locker now.

Matthias Eddy: The Founder died alone covered in his own filth, cooped up in a cell like a common criminal. He was a fraud and so are you!

Elisha (laughs): You have always been too weak to see the truth.

With this he charges at Elisha with reckless abandon, tackling him. While he manages to avoid a full impact, Eddy’s glancing blow throws him off balance and they both go over the edge of the top!

Jim Gunt: Oh my God, they are dead…

The camera from the ship’s deck pointing up shows Eddy plummeting down, taking at least two Chosen with him on the way down, but only three bodies hit the water.

Blake Church: Elisha is still up there somewhere!

Zooming in we see that the Moonchild is still somehow holding on to the futtock shrouds just underneath the top, barely finding his footing in the gusty wind. He heaves himself back up onto the top and sees himself face to face with The Shadow. Lightning strikes somewhere on the mainland, briefly illuminating the two men standing in the pouring rain, wind tearing at them. Some blood is trickling down The Shadow’s temple, his cheek bone scratched and already bruising from his fall through the cargo hatch, while Elisha is holding his shoulder, which was almost ripped out of its socket by the almost-fall just before. The Shadow looks up to where the flags are mounted, a climb of maybe 10 feet from the place they are standing. Elisha follows his gaze and looks at him with a mirthless smile.

Elisha: Are you ready to die?

The Shadow: No, I don’t have time for this.

Standing on the top of the main mast, mere steps away from securing the flag, Elisha exclaims: "Compassion will never win or may heaven strike me down!" A mighty thunderclap follows. A lightning comes down from above and strikes The Shadow, wiping him off the mast and plunging him into the depths below. While falling The Shadow yells "You missed!" as Elisha proceeds to claim the flag and victory.

Jim Gunt: This was...wow…

Jim and Mike look shellshocked at what just happened and medics and divers are on the scene with boats, making sure to get The Shadow and whoever else was thrown off the ship to safety. Almost as if waiting for the dramatic finale, the rain has stopped and as the winds begin to subside, the drones are coming out again to survey the carnage. Medics are scurrying across the deck to tend to the injured, while one drone makes its way up the main mast to show Elisha standing, facing the city, flag raised triumphantly and with an intense look of derision for the rest of the world on his face.

"I thought we were supposed to be playing Yuezhou, why are they playing San Ortelio, was that not supposed to be the end of the group game?"

"Some intern decided to swap the fixtures around on the programs before they were sent out apparently, with the second and third games being switched around. You know someone likely lost their internship over that sort of blunder, not something you would expect to with a competition as prestigious as the Copa Rushmori. Hopefully they can learn from it and do not suffer too badly for that mix up. How is the game going anyhow, last time I heard that San Ortelio team was supposed to be the hot new thing after winning the Di Bradini Cup two years ago in Valanora. Are the Wanderers having a tough time with a team that seems to have a lot of potential?"

"Well, no, not really. Júlia Müller has scored a hattrick and Asztrik Szalay headed home a goal off a corner a few minutes ago, meaning the Wanderers are up four to one with about twenty minutes left. I really expected it to be a much more competitive game, especially after that opening win against Ancharmunn being a bit of slog to watch, the side really looking a bit lazy in that one. However what Griffiths told them after that game seems to have really fired up the team, they are playing a lot better today. The passing is crisp, the marking is tight, and the finishing has been sublime, but I suppose the latter is expected more often than not when you have a good striker in the prime of their career."

"Oh dear, that is quite the scoreline and not one I expected at all. Well if the Wanderers do hold on to the lead, I heard on the halftime broadcast that Yuezhou had beaten Ancharmunn, meaning that both teams will have qualified for the knockout rounds before they play each other on the last day. Will turn it into a match where the winner gets the top spot in the group, isn't that a bit exciting?"

"Yeah, winning the group will definitely be a big boon for either side as it means avoiding a pot one team if the things stay the way they are. While not all the victories have been pretty, and you have to exclude Eastfield Lodge, it seems like the top sides are finding ways to get the job done here in Eura. Perhaps the home crowd will like some of the more gritty results, given their domestic league has a bit of a reputation here in the dual islands of being a league where you go to toughen your players up, as either they do so and excel or they quickly find themselves outmatched. Given that the majority of our defense plays in the Euraleague, it is safe to say that they have learned that fine line of being aggressive and breaking the rules. Quite useful for a team that will have to stop a Yuezhou attack that has been pretty formidable. Though they have also failed to concede a goal, so it is going to be hard work for the attacking players to showcase their talent. Maybe the difference will come in the midfield."

"You worry too much. Should just enjoy the tournament I think."

"Gran, this is important, this could help shape the route of the national team for the next two years! I can not simply sick back and enjoy the tournament."

"All that worry and stress is going to give you an ulcer. Here, take this change and do you gran a favor and go to the grocery store and get us some cookies and milk."

"But the game is still on."

"Do as your gran says or you will not have television for the Yuezhou match young man."

"Yes ma'am!"

The Snow Fox lives to fight another day after forging unlikely deal

David Austmannsson’s beleaguered government looks set to limp on into the new year after the notoriously canny political operator snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, forcing through an amended version of the austerity bill that has been dubbed the “21st Century Workhouse Act” by its detractors, with the assistance of one of the bill’s mos trenchant critics to date. Austmannsson, veteran of so many Hvítursalur deals he’s earned the nickname the Snow Fox, found one more cigar smoke filled room – and hammered out a compromise of sorts with Sigjón Þjóðbjörnsson, the leader of the National Democratic Front, who delivered enough votes to pass a bill that hours earlier he had labelled an “outrage” and an “affront”.

The volte face left opposition leaders Zóphonías Juliusson (Left-slate) and Kaija Michaelsdóttir (Progressive Liberals) uniting in furious criticism of the NDF for hypocrisy and flip-flopping, and had government partners in the Liberal-Conservative Alliance privately worrying that the Blue-Greens were embracing the populist right. The Prime Minister and Þjóðbjörnsson separately stressed that the NDF would not be joining the government or supplying them confidence. But regardless of such assurances, the Blue-Greens have now been successful in passing major legislation after years of coalition failures, and may decide the NDF will prove more profitable partners for future progress than the parties of the center.

Þjóðbjörnsson justified his decision to vote for the bill after cuts to heating subsidies and other benefits for retirees were stripped, and elements of the pension cost-of-living adjustments changed. The final version of the bill includes enhanced anti-fraud measures that Liberal-Conservatives had criticized as an infringement of civil liberties, extra funding for border security, and also entirely abolishes all legal aid funding for asylum claims. Critics charged that the bill he was voting through was still substantially similar to the one he had held up the government over, but he insisted he was “proud to have defended elderly and vulnerable Græntfjallers” while ensuring that the bill “focuses on the real parasites leeching away hard-earned taxpayer krónor”.

Austmannsson’s terse note of acknowledgement to his new partner barely concealed his distaste for a man he has called a “jackbooted terrorist”, “discount dictator wannabe” and “massive twat”. Þjóðbjörnsson was more genial, saying he had been “interested to see the experienced political operator working up close” and “looking forward to future opportunities to work with partners across the political spectrum”. Not all such reactions were so gracious. Kasper Hólmþórsson, back-bench MT for the Blue-Greens, has been suspended from the party after twii.turing that “at least now we know which one is the top”.

With the austerity agenda passed, the Blue-Greens are now likely to return to the tax restructuring they pursued, but failed to pass, during the last session, including aggressive financial restructuring, sweeping cuts to corporation taxes, and “workplace democracy enhancement measures”, Austmannsson’s uniquely euphemistic term for union-busting. He may find himself reaching across the aisle to the NDF again when it comes to his planned increase in defense spending, which the Liberal-Conservatives blocked during the last government. Þjóðbjörnsson has called for the government to “literally double” spending on “national security”, including both defense and border protection, and leaked internal GDF reports suggest a “disturbing” proportion of the enlisted base of the military have NDF sympathies.

Whatever the rest of this Thing’s session holds, it is unlikely Austmannsson, who risked the last few hairs on his head for this particular scrape, will risk a vote this close once more. But for the National Democratic Front, having proven themselves capable of holding the government to ransom, have now shown their willingness to bend to utter political flexibility when it serves their interests. It may be a long time before voters trust them again.

They'd screwed it up. Again. A draw with Soldera meant they now needed a point against Nephara or for Soldera to not beat Oberour ar Moro. The former was extremely difficult, the latter up in the air - if Soldera could draw with Astograth they could certainly defeat a pointsless, eliminated OAM. Unlikelier combinations had knocked them out before.

To be suffering through the group stages of three Copas Rushmori was unbecoming. As the referee signalled the end of the drab 1-1 draw, Louis Vaudrail's mind was made. It it would mean a struggle with the FAF bigwigs, with the press, with the squad, but if it worked...

"Carsten," he called to his assistant, who was stepping over the touchline to console the distraught Olibondeka.

"Yes, boss?" the giant ex goalkeeper asked, stopping mid-stride.

"Active Plan E."

"Plan... E?" his feet were firmly planted now, his previous task forgotten. "But are we ready t-"

"Yes. Plan E. Get the folders, I'll talk to Abasgoitia."

Life in the Seventh Star

Part Nineteen

Fire. Smoke. Fear. It was happening. Please no, not again.

Mateo woke up.

All he could see was black sky, lit by a dull yellow hue. Had it all been his imagination? This didn’t make any sense. Then came clarity; he turned his head and felt a burning pain surging across his forehead, forcing his left eye mostly shut. His mouth tasted of metal. Left arm? Not moving. He thought so anyway, until he looked up. A man in a Sameban flag facemask was dragging Mateo along the floor by the very same arm in which he had lost all feeling. Mateo tried to speak but only an unintelligible mumble came out. The man didn’t hear him and kept pulling. Knowing it was pointless to resist, Mateo relaxed, his eyes fluttered, and he returned to a state of sleep.

By the time that Mateo would open his eyes again he was in a wildly different environment. He was laid out on a rickety old hospital bed in a pale blue room, surrounded by walls with chipped paint and dodgy light fittings. It must be a hospital, he thought, but at least I’m alive. A doctor stood over him with an admiring smile, as if she knew this 16-year-old was internally calm beyond what could reasonably be expected of someone of his age. ‘Hello?’
‘Shhh. You’ve been through a lot. I’m Doctor Taro. Are you able to tell me your name?’
‘…Mateo. Matty. Where are my family?’
‘Ok, thank you Matty. Don’t worry about that right now, just rest. I’ll look into it for you.’ She turned to leave but he instinctively reached out to grab her arm with his right hand. At least that was still working. ‘Wait.’
‘Careful, you’ll hurt yourself – don’t get up.’
‘No, I’m not trying to…I just want to know where my family are. They’re…’ He drew a blank for a moment. ‘…my uncle, and my sister. I was with them.’
‘Just lie back and try not to move your head, ok? I’ll be back in a minute.’

Mateo waited a lot longer than a minute. Everything started to flow back; the near-riot, the tanks, the panicky troops, his idiot of a sister, Bella. Oh my god. Where is Bella? ‘Matty?’ The doctor had finally returned with a couple of nurses in tow. ‘Here, drink this.’ One of the nurses helped him gulp down water from a chipped glass. It tasted like chalk and he had to resist the urge to spit it out. ‘Sorry about the taste’ she said, as if reading his mind again, ‘the pipes around here aren’t exactly state of the art.’
‘Nothing about this place looks state of the art’, he retorted bitterly.
‘Yes, well, its not pretty, but we make it work here. The important thing is you’re safe.’ As if it were divined by fate, the sound of helicopters flying low overhead made the building rattle, and the lights flickered as if it were an earthquake. ‘What’s going on?’
‘You’re in South Aspel General. That’s the sound of a lockdown, started last night after everything that happened. Do you remember much of what happened to you?’

In truth he could remember everything, but learning from recent experience, Mateo kept his mouth shut. The doctor shrugged took a seat by his side. ‘Look, you don’t have to tell me anything. But there’s no police here, if that’s what you’re worried about, and if there were it wouldn’t matter. You are under our care and it will stay that way. Now listen – are you aware of the nature of your injury?’ He shook his head and flinched at the pain caused by doing so.
‘Alright then. It seems like you hit your head on a road surface – you had a rather big wound, and we had to dig a load of gravel and tarmac out of your forehead. The good news is though that there’s no permanent damage externally, and we’ve stopped the bleeding. We’ll be keeping you in to make sure there’s no internal bleeding or damage we can’t see.’
‘Why can’t you find out now?’
‘All our scanners are preoccupied. We’ll get to you though. There’s a lot of wounded to prioritise.’
‘Were they from the stadium?’
‘Some. Others from the streets afterwards. Do you really not know what’s gone on?’
‘No.’ Mateo shook his head again. But he soon had second thoughts.

‘I don’t think I do. I remember being at the Dellaro and it…everything just seemed to go to shit. And that was it.’
‘That’s ok. Short term memory loss from something like this is common. Part of the reason we’re keeping you here is just precaution, to make sure it’s nothing more serious. Do you understand all of that?’
‘Yeah, I get it.’
Great. Would you like to call anyone?’
‘Yeah, if there’s a phone free.’
‘Here – use my mobile. The queue for the hospital phones is rather large and I’d rather you didn’t leave the ward until we’ve sorted out a scan for that head of yours.’ She got up and left the phone by his hand, and smirked as she did so. ‘Don’t nick it, alright?’ He smiled back bravely, trying to ignore the pain incurred by doing anything with his face. ‘I won’t. Promise.’ She left him to it and the nurses went too. Mateo tried to get a look out of the window. However, there was no luck on that front. He was too far away and the blinds were drawn. Instead he concentrated on trying to remember Bella’s number.

Once it was dialled the phone rang. A lot of time passed.
No response. Shit.
It kept ringing.
‘Bella…Bella Bella Bella! Pick up.’
And still, it rang dead. He almost gave up. Then…
‘Hello?’ It was a man’s voice. Ryan’s.
‘Uh, hi. This is Matty. Can you hear me alright?’
Thank god, shit. Hold on.’ Mateo could hear Ryan drop the phone in shock. After a few moments he picked up again. ‘Are you alright lad?’
‘Yeah, I’m in hospital. Apparently, I’ve done my head in. It should be ok though. What’s going on, where’s Bella?’ The line was occupied by nothing but ominous silence. ‘Your mother is here with us. And your uncle. You should know, your sister is in custody.’
‘Shit.’ He cursed, in reality though “in custody” was a good outcome for Natalie.
‘Bella…my…’ Ryan couldn’t finish the sentence; Mateo’s stomach turned over and burned like he’d actually been shot rather than just bumping his head too hard. ‘She’s very badly hurt, Matty.’

‘Fancy a cup of tea?’ One of the nurses had picked her timing badly.
‘Please go away’ Mateo said through the tears welling up in his eyes. ‘How uhm, how bad is it? Is she going to be ok?’
‘To be honest with you Matty, I don’t have the faintest bloody clue. None of us do.’
‘Can I see her?’
‘No, I think its best you don’t for now.’ Mateo’s heart sank. Ryan likely hadn’t meant to say that in a hurtful way. Nevertheless, it was how it came across. He immediately tried to reassure Mateo. ‘Don’t blame yourself lad, alright? If I’m not and my wife isn’t then you really don’t need to. Its just I know how these things go – you were arrested only a few days ago. You can’t exactly go south to one of the main cities can you?’
‘Wait, go south? You said she was hurt.’
‘Yes. I don’t trust the hospitals around here, so we got her out to a specialist in Farrenton. Her mother is with her. Look, it’s been hard enough for me to not think about that at the moment, so don’t you start. Which hospital are you in again?’
‘The doctor said South Aspel General.’
‘Wow. That’s the other side of the bloody city. Stay put, ok? We’re on the way.’
‘Ok.’ Mateo paused. ‘I’m really sorry. I should never have got her involved.’
‘Don’t, alright? We all make choices Matty, and we all chose to help you. Stay. Put.’

As soon as the call was over the doctor returned. Mateo hadn’t noticed her; he dropped the phone to the floor, turned onto his side and sobbed into his pillow, blinded to the stinging pain of his wound. ‘Matty! Matty, come on, you can’t lie like that. The stiches might get pressed loose.’
‘Please just go away!’
‘No, I won’t. Alright, let’s get you back over.’ She practically pressed him back into a safe position and made sure he remained there. ‘Was that your family you were speaking to?’
‘Sort of. They’re coming to find me.’
‘Ok. I’m going to ask one of the nurses to stay with you until they get here, alright?’
‘Yeah.’ For the first time he noticed a television set hung up above the next bed. ‘Could you put the news on?’
‘Are you sure that’s a good idea?’
‘Please. I need to know what happened.’ Reluctantly, the doctor obliged. Mateo watched with horror as he learned that it had already been twenty four hours since the moment he’d been knocked out cold.

What he had survived was apparently a massacre. A Euran Army spokesperson described a situation where “relentless provocation” from “violent elements” had forced Euran soldiers into opening fire on the crowd, resulting in “regrettable” loss of life. A string of mainly Euran politicians and authority figures all lined up solemnly to wax lyrical about what a dreadful accident it all was. The pictures were stark. Blood on the streets. Distraught members of the crowd dragging loved ones clear of the carnage. A vicious melee between General Police sent in to cordon off the shooting area, set upon by survivors who were blind with rage. The Eurans had been pictured stood awkwardly outside the stadium, not knowing what to do with themselves. The stadium – what had happened to the stadium? Further images showed its fate; the Dellaro still stood partially. However, the tanks had kept firing upon it for a couple of hours before being called off amidst much confusion in the military chain of command. It had clearly turned into a complete farce, and somehow it had taken several hours of the early morning for the Euran military to conclude that trying to level an old football stadium with 120mm gunfire looked like cultural vandalism, not accelerated redevelopment of a derelict building. By that point it was too late, and the city had descended into violence overnight, with actual Sameban nationalist insurgent groups killing ten Euran Marines in a truck bombing.

We’re just hearing now that an extraordinary cabinet meeting in Bastion has finished in the last few minutes. We can’t confirm with absolute certainty these reports – like I said Andrew, there’s a lot that could happen now – but the word is that the Minister of Defence, Mr Symes, is expected to make a statement shortly. We are told that he is set to resign, and that the Prime Minister has accepted his resignation.’
‘Thank you, Louise. It would certainly be an ignominious end for Mr Symes, 59, who has been a part of the Liberal Party front bench now for a few years in various roles. Now Louise, I’m curious, is that expected to be it? We’re seeing reports from local sources in Aspel, though we should clarify these sources are highly likely to be of limited reliability, that we’re looking at a death toll of dozens here. There will almost certainly be pressure for an inquiry – the city has Liberal and Social Party MPs, and now its in a form of martial law we will surely be hearing from them soon. Its chaos up there.’
‘Yes, and there’s certainly rather a lot of manoeuvring going on right now, lots of briefing and finger pointing behind the scenes. It has to be said though Andrew, it sounds like if Mr Symes does resign, the Government may expect it to end there – clearly there is a suggestion that he may have had some influence on decision making during events in Aspel last night, but what I’ve heard so far suggests that the Government are probably going to close ranks and perhaps remind the Euran people that peace is a process, and does not happen overnight.

The television zapped off. Mateo looked to his right and saw an elderly man in the bed next to him had got up just to turn it off. ‘Load of shite, that. Euran bastards. Cover up I tell ya’, it’s a cover up already.’ Mateo avoided the gaze of his new companion. He found it hard not to agree though. Samebans had been cut down in cold blood – or almost cold blood, anyway – and the talking heads in the Bastion bubble were talking about it like it could all be tided over by one suit making way for another who would have the exact same ideas. It made his blood boil. Without anywhere to go and express his anger, Mateo bottled it up inside, which tired him quickly. Soon enough, he had fallen asleep yet again. He was woken up fifteen minutes later by a visitor. ‘…ugh…Ryan, is that you?’
‘Mr Piroz.’
It wasn’t Ryan. Who was it? The voice was familiar.
‘I have a few questions for you.’ Mateo noticed the doctor was standing in his line of view. She had a pen in her mouth and was chewing on it nervously. No…no, you’ve got to be fucking kidding me. He turned his head, and found his worse fears confirmed.

The same Euran officer who had interrogated him only a few days ago was here, sat by his bed, as grim and unfriendly as ever. ‘Don’t fret, Mr Piroz. Its not you we’re here about.’ In the moment, Mateo did all he could do, and felt that he wanted to do – he hurled up a ball of saliva and spat it directly in the man’s face. Momentarily, the interrogator was stunned. Then he smiled, wiped the spit off his face with a towelette by the side of the bed, and stared Mateo square in the eyes. ‘As I was saying – I’m not here for you. I’m here because your sister has been detained as a terror suspect and an enemy combatant. Now, if you want to get out of here without handcuffs, I’d suggest you might want to co-operate with me.’
‘Fuck you. No, really. Fuck. You.
‘You’re very brave lad, I’ve no doubt about that. Still…you’re going to tell me everything you know, and you’re going to do it now.’
‘I’m not saying a word. I have a friend, he’s a lawyer, and when he gets here he’ll put you in your fucking place.’
‘Yes, I know. We know a lot. He’s your little girlfriend’s dad, is that right? Shame about all that really. See, the thing is Mr Piroz, I don’t particularly care about you, or any of the other scum you call family – other than your sister. This girl of yours, she’s in Farrenton for treatment isn’t she?’

Mateo was welling up again, more out of hopelessness than anger now. ‘I thought so. Mr Piroz… are you familiar with the waiting list system in this nation’s hospitals for major operations? Awfully delicate thing. Knowing the right people can make all the difference. And, well, right now the right person is…me.’

Nothing else had to be said. Mateo knew where this was going, and there was no need to wait for anyone to help him decide what to do next.

He decided to tell the truth.

All About The Gothanita Isles
South Jeolerina: Capitalism is the way of life
Part 2: Sporting Culture
As written by Mr. Peterson Jaffason, Chief Editor at the Jeolerina Daily

I am telling you - here in South Jeolerina, in the best sporting region in the whole of the multiverse, we have a very deep sporting culture. In fact, sometimes people wonder how our small nation can get many sports running professionally.

South Jeolerina has a strong Volleyball league. In fact, it is looking to establish itself in the international stage, trying to get a team into the Volleyball World Expo, and organise a club-based invitational. The league has 8 teams, playing each other 2 times yearly, together with a off-season playoff best-of-5 tournament that makes it real exciting. Beach Volleyball or Court Volleyball, both are well-received sports that have huge popularity around, sometimes even more than football.

South Jeolerina somehow loves racing. The WGP races are well liked in the country, and there is a race track, though the possibility of holding a full WGP3 competition in the country is remotely 0 due to the lack of space. There are attempts to hold it with the Northern neighbours (North Handoria), but they have all came to nought, because North Handoria prefers electric cars and all. Strange, eh?

I really don't know where to start about this, because honestly our sporting culture is so diverse. We have swimmers, cyclists (the Tour De Jeolerina is an annual competition that attracts about 20 participants), sprinters, volleyball players, softball players (say no to baseball) and all.

The combined Ceroatian and Pridnestrovian force that had entered Ceroat's Southern Province had managed to make good progress inside the territory as soon as they had adapted the lasers provided by the mysterious group known only as "The Project" onto their own tanks and vehicles. Sure, both sides still lost many men to the tripods roaming the countryside, but at least now the Pridnestrovians and Ceroatians were able to fight back and even take out some of the tripods. They weren't being forced back across the border with the Western Province anymore. The week-long offensive had allowed the combined force to establish a decent foothold into the Southern Province, and now they were a third of the way towards the historical Ceroatian capital of Ragusapolis.

The invasion force had established its forward headquarters in the town of Tertje Istrije. It wasn't nearly as big as Novy Nish back west, but it was still a substantial town with a pre-Chaos population of around 190,000. Today the town's population was less than half that, with the rest either fleeing away to the west as refugees or falling victim to the tripods' heat rays. The Ceroatians were of course saddened by this turn of events, but there was nothing more that they could do about it other than destroy all the remaining tripods in the Southern Province to avenge the loss of their fellow Ceroatians.

Captain Rachel Kirilenko of the Movement for a United Ceroat bent over in front of the fountain in the middle of the plaza in front of the Tertje Istrije city hall and splashed the water onto her face. She did this two more times, and then she cupped some of the water in her hands and drank it. Her second in command, Lieutenant Eduard Vladislavovich Lambert, watched her do this and then said, "I don't really think drinking water from a fountain is a safe thing to do. At least from a health point of view."

"I don't really care if this thing is going to give me the runs or not," Rachel replied. "If I'm thirsty, I'm drinking this water. At least it doesn't look as filthy as the water in Upper Littletown."

"Ah, see, that's my whole point," Eddie said. "The water doesn't look filthy, but who knows exactly what kind of microbes and bacteria and viruses are floating around in that water that we just can't see?"

"I'll still risk it," Rachel said as she took another drink.

"I know I won't," Eddie muttered with a shake of the head. "Anyway, have you heard about this militia group from around these parts?"

"No," Rachel said as she wiped her face dry. "What about them?"

"They say they've been fighting against these tripod things ever since they came along," Eddie said.

"You sound like you don't believe a word of it," Rachel said as she sat down beside Eddie on the fountain.

"Do you?" Eddie asked pointedly. "I mean, you've seen what those alien thingies can do to a goddamned army. A real army, with tanks and APCs and IFVs and all that stuff. The army got wrecked upon first contact with these things. Do you really expect me to believe that these people have been able to wage guerrilla warfare in this place for eight months, and they all haven't been vaporized yet?"

"So what are you saying? That you don't believe that these guys are actually guerrilla fighters looking to join the cause?"

"I don't know really, to be honest," Eddie admitted with a shrug. "I'm just saying, someone better keep an eye on those guys because they could turn out to be a liability."

"Interesting," Rachel nodded.

Over in the city hall itself, Senior Lieutenant Yelena Maksimovna Vyzhinsky turned to the soldier on the opposite side of the main entrance to her and asked, "Where the fuck is the next shift?"

"Why are you asking me? I don't know!" replied Lieutenant Yelena Lavrentiyevna Porsenko. She and Vyzhinsky were part of OMON, a quasi-paramilitary group that was officially part of the local police forces of Pridnestrovian cities as their equivalent of SWAT. In practice though, OMON trained similarly to actual Pridnestrovian military units, and the OMON units could be called up for duty and fight in war just like their regular Army comrades. Sometimes OMON would actually be on the frontlines, but more often they took on the role of more heavily armed military police, sometimes augmenting the actual military police force and even taking over their functions outright. Vyzhinsky's and Porsenko's particular OMON unit had been tasked with protecting the headquarters of the Movement for a United Ceroat in Tertje Istrije. Neither of them minded being little more than glorified security guards for the Ceroatians; the duty kept them off the field at least. But right now, their shift had just ended a few minutes ago and the guards meant to replace them for the next shift had not yet arrived.

"There! I think I see them now," Porsenko said, pointing at two soldiers wearing blue camouflage pattern uniforms walking towards the city hall. "Hey! You two! Stop taking the scenic route and get the hell over here now!"

"Come on now," the first OMON trooper said. "It's only been three minutes since the end of your shift." He then looked down at his wristwatch and corrected himself. "Make that five minutes now, actually."

"Just get here and swap with us already," Vyzhinsky muttered.

"All right, all right, we're coming," the other OMON trooper said. "And we're now. Happy?"

"Just make sure there's still a city hall to guard for the next shift comes," Vyzhinsky said. "Pricks," she muttered under her breath as she and Porsenko began walking away from the city hall.

"Just let it go, Maksimovna," Porsenko soothed her friend. "You can't expect people like them to change at the drop of a hat."

"I know," Vyzhinsky said with an exasperated sigh.

"So what are you looking forward to eating today?" Porsenko asked. "Meat loaf with corn, corned beef with corn, or corn soup?"

"Ugh!" Vyzhinsky snorted. "If I have to see another kernel of corn in this place, I might just scream!" They passed by a group of militiamen, and for some reason one of them bumped into Vyzhinsky. "Hey!" she cried out, and then she suddenly went quiet.

"Huh? What was that again?" Porsenko asked. She had walked some distance away from Vyzhinsky because she hadn't stopped to turn around and look at the militiamen.

"Lavrentiyevna, did you see those militiamen's faces?" Vyzhinsky asked.

"Not really," Porsenko shrugged. "I wasn't looking."

"There's something strange about those guys," Vyzhinsky muttered. "They had scars or scratches on their faces or something like it, but at the same time it didn't really look like scars, you know what I mean?"

"No, I'm sorry, I don't," Porsenko shook her head.

"I don't know," Vyzhinsky said. "Maybe it's nothing." She turned back around to walk back to camp with Porsenko when suddenly, gunfire erupted from across the plaza. Instinctively, Vyzhinsky and Porsenko ducked down their heads and headed for the nearest cover they could see, which happened to be a fountain in the middle of the plaza. They took out their AK-74 rifles and scanned the place for threats. Porsenko happened to look upon the city hall itself, and there she saw the first clues as to what had happened.

"Chyort!" Porsenko exclaimed. "Ivanov and Smirnov, they're dead!"

"What? Der'mo," Vyzhinsky said. "That could have been us, Lavrentiyevna. If those had really taken their sweet time coming here, that could have been us lying dead on the ground now."

"No sense dwelling in the past now," Porsenko said. "Now what are we going to do?"

"I don't know! Really, I don't!" Vyzhinsky shouted. "Something is definitely happening in the city hall, but I don't know what."

"Do you think... do you think we're right in the middle of a coup?" Porsenko added.

"Like I said, I don't know," Vyzhinsky said through gritted teeth. "Although it doesn't make sense to have a coup right when you're this close to your main objective, right?"

"I don't know, I was just trying to suggest something," Porsenko said.

Vyzhinsky looked around, trying to find a way to cross the plaza and get to the city hall without exposing themselves, when she saw two militiamen taking cover behind the fountain as well. The female militiaman turned and saw both Vyzhinsky and Porsenko as well. "Pridnestrovian?" the female militiaman asked.

Vyzhinsky and Porsenko nodded their heads. "Ceroatian?" Porsenko asked back.

"Yes," replied Rachel Kirilenko. "Listen, we need to get into the city hall as soon as possible. Whatever is happening needs to be stopped as soon as we can. Can you help us out?"

"What do you need us to do?" Vyzhinsky asked.

"Just give us some covering fire while we go there, and then we'll do the same for you," Rachel said. "Ready? Go!" And before either one of the OMON troopers could react, Rachel and Eddie Lambert were already dashing for the city hall.

"Wait!" Vyzhinsky cried out. "Fuck!" she muttered as she put her Kalashnikov to her shoulder and began firing.

Triumph

Walter Avenue, Hornchurch, Eura

Time is ticking down. Everyone is tense. Around Rasmus Helder and his friends, hell is unleashed, it is loud, it is hot, it is sweaty, but they are not noticing any of this. Their world, right now, is reduced to the roughly 7’000 square metres in front of them. Savojarna are holding Southwest Eastnorth to a 0-0, and time is running out. The group drowns into the chants of the people around them, no individual voices to be made out. They are now, in the best sense of the term, one body.

SAAA-VO-JARNA! clap, clap - clapclapclap

The air is thick despite the outdoors stadium. Normally, the view from here would be splendid, with Hornchurch’s mountains right behind the horizon and the luscious green of a football pitch below the stands, but now the pitch is brown after ninety minutes of fight and none of the fans have eyes for the mountains. Southwest Eastnorth are pushing up again, driving the ball closer and closer to the goal. Next to Rasmus, his best friend Lasse is muttering “fuck” under his breath as Maersk’s tackle misses Kevin Elder. The SWEN midfielder passes his opponent effortlessly and launches a ball up front, where Chris Houton is lurking. “Fuck”, Lasse repeats a bit louder. “Not like -”

A roar.

Polina Zirkova has moved up, has interrupted the pass, leaving Houton stand at the edge of the Savojar box uselessly. Behind the group, a large Russian man stands with a distictive Jaromirgrad accent. “YAAAAAA”, he roars with a bass that reverberates through the Savojar fan stands. “DYAVAIII”, he follows up, the accent pressing through more than ever, as Zirkova launches a pass to the right onto Skov. In front of the group people stand up. Nobody in their section of the stands is sitting by now as Skov passes in to Maersk, who prolongs to Misha Jashkin.

Silence.

It’s never truly silent in a stadium, but the Savojar part of the stadium is now as close to it as possible. Nobody wants to disturb the players, not now, not when a goal is on the line. Jashkin swings inside as Rasmus clenches his hands, standing on the edge of the step where his plastic seat is fixed to. In the centre, Jekaterina Smolov is lurking, a half-step behind Esther Bloemfurst. Jashkin drops his shoulder and swings back his leg, crossing in the ball flat; in that moment, Smolov shoots out of Bloemfurst’s shadow. The timing is perfect, avoiding off-side by a tiny margin and reaching the ball in the exact moment it crosses her charge. Smolov’s right foot makes contact, sending the ball high, over Mick Bolen, under the crossbar, into the goal.

Wild cheers.

Rasmus and his friends are falling around each others’ necks, high-fiving each other. Somewhere high in the stands, someone has lost control of his beer; some splashes land on his neck before the cup lands at their feet. Suddenly, Rasmus feels hands on his shoulders. “GOOOOOOAL! DYAAAA, DYAAAA, GOAL!” the gigantic Jaromirgrader behind them shouts at him. Rasmus smiles back, high-fiving the man. Everyone is now hugging everyone. The next step is secured. Down on the pitch, the pile of Savojar players at the bench dissolves. The referee blows his whistle, and the drums low in the stands begin to play again. 89:42.

“One rainy ev’ning, in Mytanija…”

Three whistles. The game is over. In front of Rasmus, a gigantic Savojar flag is raised and waived as the entire section rises to their feet, singing their victory anthem as one. Mytanarska. The Mytanar. Remembering the 31st Copa, the one where they brought home the cup. This victory? It would bring them one step closer to another one, their second international title. Tonight, their anthem shall hark through the streets of Hornchurch.

Savojarna 1-0 Southwest Eastnorth (0-0)

Goals: 90’ Smolov 1-0 (Jashkin).
Yellow (Savojarna): 23’ Forsberg, 71’ Ilkkanen (both foul)
Remarks: 38’ Jacobsen hits crossbar.

Savojarna: Pakanen - Pedersen (58’ Viipuri), Zirkova, Forsberg, Skov - Ilkkanen (74’ Smolov), Maersk - Voynov (82’ Rajala), Lundell, Jashkin - Jacobsen.

BORE DRAW MEANS SHARED SPOILS AT THE SASKY
THIS WAS NINETY MINUTES OF PEOPLE’S LIVES THAT THEY WILL NEVER GET BACK

Football is a simple game, two sets of eleven players go out on the pitch and kick a ball around for ninety minutes. Sometimes neither team actually completes the main aim of the game: putting the spherical thing between the two posts and under the crossbar. That is referred to as a goal in normal parlance, but we didn’t see any of those here in Eura in the match between Mytanija and Valladares. Strahinja Nanusevski perhaps had the biggest chance of the match in the closing minutes but he unfortunately hit his shot narrowly wide of Lucien Chamoun’s goal. In the end only Mytanija got what they needed from the game, a draw and a solitary point to secure the Hoops safe passage to the knockout rounds as group winners. For Valladares the draw was not enough, they crashed out of the Copa Rushmori as Crystalline Caverns beat Tveidalen 2-1 and unexpectedly sneaked through to the knockout stages in second place. The question for many Mytanar pundits was whether this was a disappointing result given Mytanija’s fine start to the tournament or if Repin just did what was necessary, getting the whole team plenty of minutes and resting key components where possible.

It would perhaps be unfair to say that Lev Repin didn’t take this final game entirely seriously, Mytanija needed at least a point to confirm both qualification and the group’s top spot and the line-up he put out did have seven first choice players starting but it was also a starting eleven without Jezdimir Ocokoljic, Tahir Fejzuli and Petr Isaev. If the pressure was on and Mytanija needed a win you can be certain that those three would be starting but against Valladares Repin decided to keep up his rotation policy as he handed starts to Patrik Odonelec, Vilim Kupresak, Strahinja Nanusevski and Kemal Gajic. Pre-match Repin explained that this starting line-up represents the ‘faith’ that he has in this group of players to step up and perform to the level necessary to get results, even against the group’s top seed. In the main he was proven to be correct, nobody let him down after all, but there was a slight lack of the cutting edge that you would expect there to be with a full-strength starting eleven.

During the first-half Valladares actually started the better of the two teams, perhaps with the knowledge that they were in greater need of a positive result than Mytanija. Raynor City United striker Brayan Borja has plenty of experience of playing at the top-level for both club and country and he nearly put his team ahead, denied by what was probably Pedja Kasun’s save of the tournament thus far. The big Ararat goalkeeper tipped the ball around the post at full stretch and were it not for his fingertips then Valladares may have been 1-0 up. Marcelo Zamudio is a real talent and at times Mytanija were struggling to deal with him, Alen Hrdaljko initially snapping into tackles a moment too late given Zamudio’s outstanding dribbling ability and sense of timing. As the first-half wore on Hrdaljko grew into the game though and he was nipping in and pinching the ball off Zamudio’s toes before he had a chance to wriggle away and this gave Mytanija opportunities on the counter, Kemal Gajic was in the mood to cause trouble down the Valladar left and the winger’s pace was visibly frightening the veteran defender Antoine Montes at times.

In the second period the game was characterised by substitutions and then flurries of on-field activity as those substitutions briefly affected the game (football is a simple game, after all), before the fixture returned to its ponderous pace. Lev Repin moved first as he brought the largely ineffective Brajko Gavrilovic off for Dalibor Vlahovic and the latter’s more refined style of play did begin to cause some issues for the Valladar defence. Vlahovic is able to drift inside more than Gavrilovic and this created overloads in central areas, sometimes with Vukovic contributing to them or sometimes with him overlapping on the outside as the alternative provider of width on the left flank. Kemal Gajic was still causing mischief on the right too and Valladares coach Jessica Curran decided she had seen enough and withdrew Montes for Pablo Núñez. This change largely seemed to take the sting out of the game. Repin had substituted Grigorij Savicevic for Kamil Jernejec at the same time too, opting for the familiar Olympic Thessia central defensive partnership of Jernejec and Anac to ostensibly see the game out.

A mere five minutes later the next changes came, Valladares bringing Pierre Vasseur and Darwin Pico off for Mateo Foschini and William Alonso respectively whilst Mytanija brought the captain off as Jasno Odonelec made way for Tahir Fejzuli. Fejzuli immediately sent Kemal Gajic through and a good save from Chamoun was needed to prevent the new FK Arsika winger from dinking him with what would have been the game’s opener. At the opposite end it was Brayan Borja once again being denied by the in-form Pedja Kasun with another solid save, this time with his feet. The two goalkeepers were making the game seem like it was heading to an inevitable 0-0 draw but the best chance of the game fell to Strahinja Nanusevski as a Fejzuli corner wasn’t dealt with properly in the final ten minutes. The ball fell to the Liria Prizren striker, bodies were strewn around him and he had the whole goal to aim at. Chamoun probably wouldn’t have got to the shot had it been on target given Nanusevski was about six yards out, but the striker swiped at the ball and ended up putting it wide of the post. A big miss and the striker had his head in his hands as the teams set themselves up for the subsequent goal kick, it was a huge chance and he knew it. It could have been both his first international goal and the goal which would have secured Mytanija a perfect group stage record.

Despite many in the media (myself included) heralding the game as a tactical battle between Repin’s 3-1-3-3 and the Valladar 3-2-3-2 the game rather fizzled out, with both systems rather thwarting one another and Repin’s team selection perhaps indicating that he wanted his team to do the bare minimum and move on. In the end Nanusevski’s miss mattered little as Mytanija saw the game out, the draw was fine for the Hoops, enough to see them through as group winners and meaning they got the supposedly easier tie in the round of sixteen. The miss may not have done too much for Strahinja Nanusevski’s confidence, however. Lev Repin cut the striker some slack post-game: “You can’t score them all and normally we’d expect Strahinja to be tucking that away but it was a bit of a melee in the penalty area and the ball has arrived to him quickly, I think he puts that in in the Top League but here he knows you don’t have as much time when you’re playing international standard players and he’s snatched at the chance a little. Next time he’ll know what to do.”

By securing top spot in the group Mytanija have been drawn against Group E’s second-place team Mavinet. They scraped through on goal difference after a shock loss to Nyowani Kitara in their second game. Lev Repin will be excited by the fact that their default formation is an attacking 4-3-3 and he will feel that it can be exploited by his 4-3-3/3-1-3-3 hybrid given some of the defensive issues the Mavinese team have experienced so far in this Copa Rushmori. It is expected that Repin will return to a more familiar looking starting eleven for the game against Mavinet despite some of the experimentation during the group stage. We can be fairly certain that the likes of Ocokoljic, Fejzuli, Isaev and Kalinic will be starting for what will be an exciting round of sixteen tie, with the winner progressing to the last eight of the tournament.

Reality of Mytanar Top League’s standing leads to clubs looking to new markets

As I have been detailing over the past week or so, Mytanar clubs are recognising that they have to operate differently when it comes to player recruitment nowadays. Long gone is the era when the likes of Ibai Kiriano and Vagn Meyer can be attracted to the league in their peak years, so clubs are having to get creative with where they’re looking for potential talent. This summer we have seen clubs buying players from Nyokani Kitara after their impressive showing in the Copa Rushmori group stage, as well as youngsters being purchased from Othilea and Nieuw Crelaand and an increasing amount of signings made from the lower leagues of the domestic game too. Mytanar clubs are having to come up with novel ways to stock their squads, knowing that they cannot hope to compete with the giants of international club football from Eura, Audioslavia and Nephara.

1896 Ebor have perhaps the most high-profile example, bringing in Nyowani Kitara national team goalkeeper Oduor Bigombe from East Dewayo in his homeland. Bigombe may have been in one of the leakier defences in the Copa Rushmori – Nyowani Kitara conceded 8 goals in their 3 group games – but Zdeslav Nesic and his scouting network must have seen enough to convince them of the goalkeeper’s ability despite the number of goals he conceded. As a club they have been very active this summer, bringing in Dalibor Vlahovic from Ararat as they look to push Atletik for the league title next season. They also signed the prolific striker Dragisa Alagic from Druga Liga team Zeljeznicar Sigurno, the forward will be a bit of a project and will start on the bench for them next season but he has the attributes to be a striker in the mould of a Nebojsa Aleksic and Nesic believes very strongly that he can become a key contributor for 1896 Ebor in the coming years. This is despite the fact that Alagic never came through at a Top League academy and clubs seem to be more willing to disregard that now given the quality of the players produced from clubs across the Mytanar footballing pyramid. Vitalia – a third tier team at the time – winning the Spirit of Youth Trophy was perhaps a defining moment as clubs sat up and took notice of the quality of players in youth teams at lower levels of the game.

It’s been a long time coming but it can only be a welcome development and when this goes hand-in-hand with intelligent recruitment from other nations it could be a key factor in Mytanar football becoming a force once more. CDSA’s signing of promising young Othilean goal poacher Tasos Svarnas in preparation for the departure of Dejan Zgela shows the proactive nature of this approach. CDSA competed with a number of Mytanar clubs for Svarnas’ signature (apparently 1923 Esca, Arka Snezhnaya and Crvena Zvezda were all in for him), but warded off their rivals by demonstrating a clear pathway into the starting line-up for Svarnas, as well as where he could end up after playing for CDSA. Having examples like Tihomir Feric winning league titles with Atletik after coming through at CDSA really helps in that regard. Slavko Jelic will be hopeful that Svarnas can have a similar impact in Decraa as other young Othileans have had in the Top League, including Thanasis Panagakos at 1923 Esca and Kostas Aklis at Atletik and more recently Liria Prizren.

It’s an approach which has its detractors, with some arguing that Mytanar clubs should be focusing purely on domestic talent, but they already do that to an incredible degree and it is largely showing results too. The national team is progressing well despite being away from the international scene for a while and Olympic Thessia did well in IFCF competition with a squad full of Mytanars. Adding in a few foreign starlets for cheap transfer fees can only make the Mytanar Top League better and get it back up those IFCF coefficients, something we all want to see in the long run.

OOC: Edited after discussion with Pasarga to align our RPs.

Lu Jialan set up his team to take a point off of Pasarga, which would send the group title - and, after Cassadaigua's composed 2-0 victory over Taeshan, a much easier octofinal draw - to a coin flip. Lu Jialan's Dragons got their wish - but after an early goal from the Wanderers, Yuezhou took a much more convoluted path to the draw than the nil-nil fans and players alike may have been expecting. Han Jian's early mistake gave the clinical Szôllôssi an open goal that the Turkish forward rolled past a diving Guo Yanhong. Just thirty-six minutes in, the team whose one job had been "don't concede" had conceded. Lu Jialan reacted strongly, urging his team forwards and opening them up further, and managed to get a goal back from Huang Shedong, but shortly after halftime, another goal from Szôllôssi put them back to square one. A hard-fought second half saw Li Jing and Diadora Reeve substituted back on, the former of which set up Wen Xiaohui to level the score. Pasarga went up again through (who else?) Müller's close-range deflected effort before one final counterattack culminating in a brilliant Li Jing free-kick levelled the score one last time.

The Wanderers may bemoan their uncharacteristically leaky defense after the draw, but they shouldn't complain about the end result - as the coin flip going their way made the draw as good as a Pasarga win for seeding purposes. Taeshan has been uncharacteristically quiet in the group stage, scoring just thrice in three matches and never seriously threatening Cassadaigua. Meanwhile, even a second-choice Cassadaigua, who the Dragons will take on tomorrow at Troutbridge, scored eleven and conceded just one in the group stage, looking more like the WC86 semifinalists than the team that was upset by Kelssek in the WC87 Round of 16. The attack-minded Fillies will prove a challenge for Yuezhou's defense, who followed two clean sheets with a poor performance against Pasarga, while the likes of Huang Shedong and Liu Huiying will find it tough to find space in Cassadaigua's solid 4-4-2.

For the millions of Yue women back at home or in the stands, though, tomorrow's matchup is more than just Dragons and Fillies. Cassadaigua represents not just a regional titan of football, but also an ideal nation for the empowerment of female footballers. While Yue league football has technically allowed women to play for a few years now, the youth and developmental infrastructure remain distinctly second-rate (if even that), and rampant discrimination and societal pressures have also contributed to the suppression of female footballing talent. While there are isolated success stories, with the likes of Ruo Xiaolan, Wen Xiaohui, Liu Huiying, and Jiawei Chuan all finding success internationally, most players have found much more success developing abroad as soon as possible. In fact, three high-profile Yue youth players - Shi Meilin, Lu Lanying, and Fang Yuhui - have found starting spots in Cassadaigua's newly-international league, all citing the desire to develop in a higher-resource league and the greater female empowerment as reasons for their decision.

As Yuezhou opens up more to the Rushmori community - with CRC membership rumored to be in the cards - the question of balancing Rushmori cosmopolitanism with Yue tradition will seriously test Wu Zhongsheng's National Union government. With many of Rushmore's top domestic leagues and international teams - chief among them World Cup champion Nephara's Zenith - having strongly egalitarian heritages, Yue football will feel the pressure to get with the times as they attempt to refashion their own national team into a regional power. While increased gender equality is not the only such issue that the Yue Super! League must solve for, it certainly has been one of the most visible - something a matchup (and likely defeat) against Cassadaigua will only further reinforce.

Copa Rushmori and CASE update,
By Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

The group stage of the Copa Rushmori came to an end, with the Fillies knocking off Taeshan, 2-0, earning the Group A title. This sets them up with a round of 16 match against a very good side by Yuezhou, a country that has come a long way both in the Copa Rushmori and in the World Cup in a very short period of time. I’ll talk about that more in a bit, but also there is pretty big news in regards to finding out the CASE President. As you probably know, CASE is looking for a new President following the retirement of Taylor Connolly, and I talked about her legacy in a previous article. I could get into it again, as there is so much that can be said about all the wonderful things that she has done to return Cassadaigua to the top tier of international soccer after our hiatus. As a refresher, the top candidates are interviewed by trusted people of the Queen herself, and their findings are given in a report to Queen Cassie II. Ultimately, then, it is up to the Queen to determine the next CASE President. We are now at the stage of this process where the candidates have been interviewed, and the Queen will be making her decision. There is no timeline, technically, for this decision, but expect it to be made quickly as time is always valuable. We have learned here at the Concord Heights Times that the following people are the finalists that Queen Cassie II is deciding upon:

Stephanie Sweeney: Stephanie, to many, is the obvious choice. She’s the “why is this such a long drawn out process when Stephanie is clearly the best candidate in every way possible” option. If Sweeney is named the next President of CASE, literally no one would disapprove of the decision. Yet, here we are, perhaps just going through the process as a formality. She has done almost everything that one could imagine since our return to World Cup play. The 63-year old has managed ten World Cups, being our only manager since our return in the World Cup, and got us to qualify in only our second Cup back. The trajectory of the national program rose quickly, getting us to the semifinal in each of World Cup 83 and 86, and winning the third place game in 86. Those who don’t feel that Stephanie will be named the next President of CASE feel that it will be because Stephanie wants to remain in coaching, or that she will not be able to fully convince the Queen, when she makes her decision, that she is 100% ready to put managing aside for what is an administrative position. A second concern is that Sweeney has exclusively been an international manager and not had a role within our domestic league. CASE is just as responsible for the domestic side as the international side.

Sierra Hinson: Sierra is a former World Cup player, appearing on our roster in World Cup 67. When CASE was refounded, she was named one of the Vice Presidents to Taylor Connolly. According to sources, she was the official “second in command” to Connolly, so in that regard she has plenty of knowledge of what is currently going on in the offices for there to be a smooth transition. The concern about her is her age, as she is 69. Not that there's anything wrong with being 70 years of age when World Cup 88 comes along, but that is six years older than Sweeney, and you have to wonder if the Queen is thinking about how long Hinson would remain in the position. She has made it as one of the three finalists, so she has been good in convincing people up to this point, but as the oldest of the remaining three, that will be considered.

Kristen Speller: The 44-year old former goalkeeper was always seen as a highly intellectual player on the field. After all, most keepers are. Kristen appeared in World Cups 78 and 79 for us as the starting keeper, before moving into the CASE offices immediately upon retirement. She was seen as someone who was bright enough to be a great manager, but Speller has had different ambitions, saying from the start that she enjoyed the business side of the game. She has had seven years of working for CASE, so has had time to learn the trade even if others have had more experience. Being young, she could have a long career in this position, but it also might mean that she is an ideal candidate if the Queen wants to start doing things a little differently. Cassadaigua’s entry into IFCF this year is a big reason for that. Let’s not forget that Connolly, as great as she was, was a stickler for keeping us out of that. Not surprisingly, in the first year of her retirement, we entered it. This makes her a good candidate, but the obvious concern with her is that it might be “too soon” for Speller. Some of the old school fans might not like her being placed in charge.

As I said, there is no word on when we will hear an announcement on the Queen’s decision, but I do think it could happen quickly. The current squad, under Brittany Byers, is doing a fantastic job, coming off a 2-0 win over defensive power, Taeshan. The Fillies did a great job in this match controlling possession, especially in the first half as the Taeshanis were content to sit back and play for a 0-0 draw, I guess. On paper, the game did not matter much since the two teams had made it to the next round, but that did not inspire Taeshan to play any differently than they typically do. They held up well, but in the 38th minute, allowed a goal to Morgan Rosenblatt, who was recently awarded Nephara’s Emerald Fist for being the Debutant of the Year while playing for AFC Treason. Congratulations to her on that honor! In the second half, Taeshan began to press for an equalizer a little more, and the Fillies caught them in a counter attack in the 73rd minute, on a Preston Newfeld goal. At that point, the two sides seemed to pack it in to get ready for their next opponent. For Cassadaigua, that is Yuezhou, who went a strong 2-1-0 in group play, only finishing second to Pasarga in the group because the coin flipped the wrong way for them. Of the match, the manager Byers stated, “It speaks so well for soccer in Rushmore that Cassadaigua versus Yuezhou is a round of sixteen game. We have some excellent up and coming programs in this region, and when I say that, I mean future World Cup championship contenders. Mix those in with the established programs, and both the present and future of Rushmori soccer is outstanding.” Don’t forget that there are three players from Yuezhou that play professionally in Cassadaigua: Shi Meilin (Rutland FC), Lu Lanying (Rutland Dockside), and Fang Yuhui (North Granby). They are young, and while none are on the Yuezhou national team, that could change in the future.

That game will come our way from Troutbridge in Eura, allowing our team to continue to maintain a base of operations here in the city. Both our fans and those also travelling with the team, such as us in the media, have certainly liked that aspect so far.

Host notice - I'm delaying the Ro16 cutoff and scorination for 24 hours as I know a lot of people will need to get their IFCF submission over the line (me included!), so no need to rush tonight. Schedule will be updated in the OP.
