NS World Cup of Masters III Everything Thread

Postby Sarzonia » Mon Mar 15, 2021 5:45 am

[HOST ANNOUNCEMENT: UNLESS you are one of the participating nations or a Moderator/Administrator performing their required duties, do not post in this thread!]

Hear ye! Hear ye!

Welcome to all 16 nations participating in the third NS World Cup of Masters! The Incorporated Football Federation cordially welcomes all of you to this competition and hopes you enjoy your participation in this tournament for the more veteran players of your footballing communities. Sarzonia won the inaugural World Cup of Masters. Kriegiersien won the second. Who will win the third?

Since there will be 16 nations competing, we will have four groups of four nations each in a double round-robin format. You will play each group opponent twice; once home and once away. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockout rounds in Sarzonia.

VERY IMPORTANT: ANY players with solely OOC questions or concerns must post them in this thread. Anyone who posts a solely OOC post in this thread will incur a RP bonus penalty to be determined by the host. An OOC note at the top of or at the bottom of an IC post is fine.

In the event that we need to break ties, the following tiebreaking procedures shall be used:

GROUP TIES:
1. Head-to-head results
2. Head-to-head goal differential
3. Overall goal differential
4. Total goals scored
5. IC coin flip (OOC: RP bonus)

KNOCKOUT STAGE TIES:
1. Overall goal differential
2. Total goals scored
3. Fewest goals conceded
4. IC coin flip (OOC: RP bonus)

The group draw will take place later today. Matchday 1 will take place on Thursday.

Best of luck to all competing teams!

GROUP DRAW RESULTS: After the traditional formal process of casting of lots, the following groups have been established. (OOC: With the exception of Sarzonia being drawn as the first team in Group 1, the other groups were sorted through random.org's list generator).

Woodstock Profile
Sarzonia's capital city features the Gray House, where current President Grant Haffner lives, The Manor, where Lieutenant President and former First Gentleman Brian Patrick lives, Parliament Hall where the Sarzonian Parliament convenes, and the John Paul Stevens Building, where Sarzonia's Supreme Judicial Court presides. Unlike many countries with bicameral legislatures including a Senate, Sarzonia's House of Delegates is actually the upper chambre. Delegates are elected for no more than three two-year terms; Senators may serve no more than two six-year terms; the President may serve no more than two four-year terms.

The city also includes various museums and the Max Yasgur Centre for the Performing Arts, which is a go-to concert venue in Sarzonia and has been since the country became independent. It features a subway system that's fast and efficient and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Among the more popular areas of Woodstock are the Little Catherina district, which contains the largest concentration of Delaclav ex-pats within Sarzonia and some of the best baked goods Sarzonia has to offer. The Little Timiocato neighbourhood is also very popular with Pacitalian cuisine dominant in restaurants throughout the neighbourhood.

The sporting crown jewel of Sarzonia is the Dave Wilson Athletic Complex and Dave Wilson Stadium, the national stadium of Sarzonia, which seats 105,900. It will be the home of Group 1 matches.

Nicksia Profile
Sarzonia's largest city has long been the cultural capital of The Incorporated States and is the centre of the country's creative scene. The city takes its name from Fleetwood Mac singer and solo singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks. The city boasts a population of 14.6 million people with a large district named Rhiannon that boasts an array of coffee shops, cafes, and contains a historic section with replicas of cobblestone streets. A row of taverns and pubs lines one set of streets.

The historic district includes the site of the old Nicksia Stock Exchange, which closed down in the mid-2000s when the country's financial centre moved to Portland with the ascent of the Portland Iron Works among the world's leading military contractors. The building was used for a while as a location for satellite PIW offices until the Benatar Historical Society acquired the building with funding from Sarzonia's Division of Culture. It also includes the "southern Gray House" where late founding President Mike Sarzo once convalesced after being diagnosed with cancer.

Nicksia's sporting jewels are highlighted by Mike Sarzo Stadium, a retractable roof stadium with a natural grass pitch and a transparent retractable roof that allows sunlight in to provide nourishment for the grass. The stadium has a statue of founding Sarzonian President Mike Sarzo at the main entrance on Putnam Avenue. The stadium seats 77,910 and was recently renovated with solar panels and upgraded with the latest big screens, LED displays, and free Wifi access. The newly constructed Bank of Sarzonia Arena is in competition with the venerable Palestra in Woodstock for the status of home court for the Sarzonian national basketball team.

Visitors can attend the Naval History Museum near The Pier where people traveling between Sarzonia and Delaclava can also rent motor and sailboats for day trips between the two countries. Visitors can see the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship still afloat and the only commissioned warship in the Incorporated Sarzonian Navy without the ISS prefix. The ISS Rampage, a light aircraft carrier from Sarzonia's earliest days is also among the ships on display. It is surrounded by the Old Port neighbourhood with a collection of rustic-looking taverns that also includes souvenir shops.

Aficionados of live music can get their fix at the Mabel Normand Centre for the Performing Arts five nights a week. Thursday nights are open mic nights where the house band allows any aspiring musicians to try out singing live. The Crystal Visions Palace offers free music lessons to anyone regardless of age or ability. Actors can play their trade in a supportive environment at the Sea of Love Thespian Centre.

Group 2 matches will be played at Mike Sarzo Stadium.

Portland Profile
The home of the venerable Portland Iron Works, a defence contractor that originally sold naval ships, but became large enough to acquire the Wilmington Shipyard Corporation, which sold hospital ships and other logistics supplies, among other contractors. The city became the financial capital with the continued ascent of the PIW, and moved to the Portland Stock Exchange building, which is the centrepiece of the city's Finance District. Guided tours for countries friendly to Sarzonia are available for a fee. The Portland Iron Works building has a statue of its first CEO, Admiral Barbara Tucker in front of it. The street for the PIW campus is named Admiral Tucker Boulevard.

The city also has an Old Port area, featuring a large collection of boating for people who want to take boats out for fishing or for just being on the open water. Some of the country's prime seafood restaurants call the Old Port home. A highly advanced light rail shuttles people between Portland itself and the growing neighbouring city Corcorran, which was named after the Delaclav city that is the largest city near Sarzonia.

The city just finished construction on a brand new Iron Bowl to replace the venerable structure that once hosted Sarzonian football home matches. The building seats 70,165 for football and will be the home of Group 3 fixtures.

Wilmington Profile
The city that was once at the forefront of shipbuilding industry in Sarzonia on the strength of the Pasteur-class hospital ships that were its backbone, Wilmington has evolved into an eclectic city representing a wide variety of Sarzonian life. It's best known for its shipping and beachfront areas, along with hospitality that's second to few places within Sarzonia. Wilmington also is a major presence in Sarzonia's sporting history with it being among the "big four" of Sarzonian sports cities. Wilmington will host Group 4 fixtures at Shipyard Stadium, which seats 62,758.

Cultural Notes

Sarzonians are polite, but can be a little reserved and sometimes aloof when they meet strangers. However, once they get to know people, they can open up and let their guard down.

The currency in Sarzonia is the Sarzonian dollar. There is no $1 bill. The one dollar coin has a picture of founding President Mike Sarzo on the obverse.

Since the second edition:
Jobst Haudels (38) The son of Timon just turned old enough after ending his career as professional player. He was like his father national team player, but not that successful
Di Bradini77 (36) A prototype clone of the legendary Simeone Di Bradini, who didn’t make the cut to ever play for Kriegiersien. But he is still a great talent with great genes and played soccer a while, before turning to other sports and finally becoming a hairdresser.
Marco Wimmer (53) Was once the fastest player in Kriegiersien and played half of his life for the presidents club Timesteam. He then ended his career playing in lower leagues.

Sarzonia Senior Stars

Note: Home kits have a primarily navy colour scheme; away kits are primarily white; keeper kits are green.

Style Modifier: +1
Permissions: No killing, no major injuries. Otherwise, yes

Manager Tyrone Manningham, 65
Manningham retired 20 years ago after a career as a manager in the Sarzonian Football Confederation, leaving after his team failed to advance to the Cyanea Joint League for three consecutive seasons. Prior to that, his teams advanced from fourth division through to the SFC in six years.

Assistant Manager Jill Nelsen, 43
This is her first international competition after serving as a manager in the Sarzonian Football League, which was absorbed into the SFC. The SFC has just announced it will launch under the name Sarzonian Football League. Nelsen will work with the offensive side of the football.

Goalkeepers Coach Troy Perkins, 46
The starting goalkeeper on the first Sarzonian national football team, Perkins agreed to come back to help out with this seniors team.

ROSTER (staters in bold}

GOALKEEPERS
1 Will Brantley, 5'11" 165 pounds, 38
Brantley was the starting goalkeeper on the last Sarzonian national football team prior to its 27-Cup absence from the international stage.

27 Joel A'Hearn, 6'2" 225 pounds, 36
A'hearn was projected to be a future starting goalkeeper for the Stars prior to the country's decision to enter into a period of isolation. He retired from the SFC a couple of years ago but decided to keep his skills sharp in a recreational football league.

DEFENDERS
2 Kenny Lagerwey 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, 41
Once among the fastest players to ever play defence for Sarzonia, a combination of the natural effects of aging and a torn ACL in his left knee has slowed him down signifcantly.

4 Jill Arians, 5-foot-11, 155 pounds, 41
Arians only recently started playing football again after dropping out of college to take care of her parents when they fell ill. She leaves two young children with their father to compete for the Senior Stars.

8 Bill Wescott, 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, 49
Still big and bruising, although the sheer muscle he had at the height of his playing career has morphed a little bit into a beer gut.

23 Aiden Yang, 5-foot-10, 195 pounds, 37
Yang is the son of an entrepreneur who is looking to establish a senior football league in Sarzonia and both Yangs hope success in the World Cup of Masters will lead to a successful establishment of such a league.

14 Zoey Lawson, 5-foot-9, 145 pounds, 39
Lawson played for Sarzonia's women's league up until the day it halted operations. She still has speed and instincts.

19 Dave Spencer D 6'5", 250 pounds, 43
Big and brawny, Spencer also plays a rather physical style that can knock midfielders and forwards off their game. Trying to round his way back into playing shape after a lengthy retirement brought on by Sarzonia's period of isolation.

MIDFIELDERS
5 Tim Rodney 5'9 150 pounds, 44
Rodney played bigger than his height. On the New Jerusalem Nobles, he played a rugged fullback when the team plays a 3-5-2, but played as a defensive midfielder in a 4-4-2 alignment when the team suffered several injuries among its defensive players. With Sarzonia adopting a more attack-oriented team, he shifts up to play midfield.

9 Ettore Salivani, Jr. 5'10 155 pounds, 41
The son of former Sarzonia national team standout and Pacitalian emigre Ettore Salivani, the younger Salivani retains his father's flair, but also picked up on his mother's preternatural calm. He also has outstanding ball skill and is surprisingly adept as a defensive player.

15 Brad Tremblay 5'9 162 pounds, 37
Tremblay, 26, had trouble sticking with a team in the SFC before finally finding a home with the Portland Timbers. He is arguably the fastest player on the Stars and fires the hardest shot on the team, but his shot is not all that accurate.

20 Colin Rudolph 6'2", 215 pounds, 38
A blend of physicality and skill once gave Rudolph, a tryout with the Stars when they last hosted a World Cup. He earned it through his chemistry with other players on the squad.

7 Bill Carson, 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, 46
Carson is a pacey player even at his age, and has ball skills that would have made him a great fit for a SFC team back in the day, but alcoholism prevented him from ever seeing the pitch. He has been sober for eight years.

18 Francis Carter-Wiggins, 5-foot-5, 140 pounds, 39
Another player from Sarzonia's now-defunct women's league, she looks to be an offensive substitute when the Senior Stars need a playmaking middie.

FORWARDS
10 Zack Wilson, 6'0 213 pounds, 44
The son and grandson of Stars legends Brian and Dave Wilson developed some of his father's flair for the dramatic and led the SFC in goal scoring with 28 goals for the Portland Timbers. Pacey player who spends a lot of time in the weight room. Very difficult for smaller defenders to bring down. Currently serves as the Incorporated Football Federation chairman and is the father of Clayton Wilson.

17 Matt Lynch, 6'3", 205 pounds[/b], 42
The World Cup Hall of Fame striker was the top scorer for the Sarzonian national team during its AOCAF XIX appearance. His tall, lithe frame makes him an inviting target for more aggressive players who invariably find out he can take and dish out punishment.

25 Emilio Ruiz, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds, 36
Brings energy and pace off the substitute's bench. Pure target player.

44 Joanne Carter-Walsh, 5-foot-3, 135 pounds, 40
More of a skill forward than Ruiz, she will also be looked at for a midfield role if needed.

DELACLAVA NATIONAL OVER-35 SOCCER TEAM
THIRD WORLD CUP OF MASTERS

Trigram: DEL | Nickname: Phoenixes (sometimes playfully called the "Molters") | Style Modifier: +5

RP permissions: Yes, but be respectful and TG/DM if you're not sure or have ideas.

Manager: Baghdasar Parsamyan, 37, Cleopatrana SC - The recently retired forward took the helm of his old team, Cleopatrana SC. In three seasons as manager, he has led the Pharaohs to two league titles, a league runners-up, and a United Cup title. He has the respect of his players, who are all either former teammates or opponents.

GOALKEEPERS
#1 GK Vazha Gelashvili - 37, 6-5, 185 - AC Espene: Gelashvili comes into the competition on a high note, splitting time with Vladimir Balakirev and mentoring the 21-year-old en route to AC Espene's league title. Gelashvili was in the national team conversation in the not-too-distant past and looks forward to taking a starring role on this Masters team.

#14 GK Alex Morton - 37, 6-6, 195 - Athens: A former veteran with Manchester, Morton had a rough year with an Athens team that narrowly survived relegation, but still has the skills to compete with and stop shots from Delaclava's best.
#22 GK Glen Henry - 36, 6-4, 190 - Metro Tirana: The Catherina FC legend is very much on the tail end of his career, and may well be calling it quits after a season to forget with Metro Tirana, so a strong performance in this Masters World Cup would be quite welcome.

DEFENDERS

#2 CB Ruadh Jardine - 35, 6-4, 195 - Parakeet FC: The big, physical Jardine was a reliable bench presence on a Parakeet FC team that had one of the strongest defenses in the league, outdone in goals allowed only by Cleopatrana SC. A bit vulnerable to be beaten by speed in open space, but hard to maneuver around in the box.

#4 RB Nurzhan Novikov - 35, 5-10, 160 - Southwest Meredith: Novikov comes off a year in which he won UFL B Defensive Player of the Year and led Southwest Meredith to a League B title, but still has a healthy chip on his shoulder after SWM failed to come through the promotion playoff. Nevertheless, he's a fast, scrappy back all over the field, and a big part of a team which gave up just 32 goals in 76 games.

#5 LB Nikodem Woźniak - 35, 6-3, 190 - Ossiana FC: Woźniak's first step is a bit slow, but picks up impressive speed over time, which helps on launching counterattacks and recovering on defense. It's a high-rish, high-reward style that fits in well with Delaclava's overall tactical scheme.

#12 CB Grigor Mooshian - 35, 6-0, 175 - Triniteras Pride:
#13 RB Dallas Harrison - 35, 6-3, 175 - Juegas:
#16 LB Tim Fleming - 35, 6-4, 190 - Stockton:

MIDFIELDERS
#3 RM Ranko Filipović - 36, 5-9, 150 - Juegas:

#6 LDM Jan Wagner - 35, 5-9, 150 - Oxford:

#8 LM Rigoberto Colon - 35, 5-11, 155 - Triniteras Pride:

#9 RDM Jüri Ilves - 36, 6-3, 180 - Manchester Wolves:

#10 CM Ronaldo Carvalho - 38, 6-0, 160 - Portarubea FC:

#17 LM Robert Hubbard - 36, 5-10, 155 - South Catherina
#18 RM Gary Chapman - 36, 6-3, 180 - Kings Club
#20 CM Avedis Darbinian - 35, 6-1, 180 - Juegas
#21 LDM Troy Marsh - 40, 5-11, 165 - Retired
#23 RDM Geoffrey Pena - 37, 5-8, 155 - Retired

FORWARDS
#7 RW Euphranor Papadimitriou (C) - 38, 5-11, 165 - Ossiana FC: Undoubtedly the star of this team, Papadimitrou would not be out of place on the full national team. He continues to turn back the clock, winning Masters POY in three of the past four years and making one Best XI and two Next XI teams in that time span; the season before last, he led Ossiana FC to a surprise second-place league finish. He has a deft touch and has still retained much of his speed over time.

#11 LW Denys Havrylyuk - 37, 6-1, 175 - Valhalla Vikings: Being a forward on the ultra-defensive Valhalla Vikings is really a formality more than anything else, but hey, someone's got to score the goals so Valhalla can win games, and Havrylyuk does it pretty well. He's fast yet physical, a bit careless with the ball at times but can grind and run with the midfield, which will be a useful first line of defense.

#15 LW Victor Delgado - 35, 5-11, 155 - Triniteras Pride
#19 RW Baghdasar Parsamyan - 37, 6-0, 175 - Retired

Formation: 3-5-2
Free Kicks: Papadimitrou to score, Carvalho from medium range to get a header/volley, Filipović longer-range
Penalties: Papadimitrou, Havrylyuk, Carvalho (the first on this list who is still in the game)

Match Preview: Britland Isles Veterans - Lorrana Veterans

As this is the first time we've seen any of these teams play here at Newsbit Sports, we don't really know what to expect. However, what we do have is Lorrana's starting lineup for the game tonight. Britland Islands hasn't announced theirs yet, but we can assume they will soon.

Starting Lineup
Image
GK 13 Navruai
DF 3 Mizmi
DF 5 Anën
DF 21 Esso
DF 12 Aoiamoq
DF 14 Makav
MF 11 Keposlar
MF 22 Liazar
FW 20 Lilsovra
FW 9 Epav
FW 8 Bisir

Substitutes
GK 1 Eu'asa
GK 23 Salma
DF 2 Kilukti
DF 4 Nadi
DF 17 Ayabadio
DF 18 Ravalia
MF 6 Paksaleio
MF 7 Ond
MF 10 Ezai
MF 15 Wi'ov
MF 16 Oanleia
MF 19 Lata'api

Thoughts
While they're officially lining up in a 5-2-3, we can expect to see Epav playing a false 9, with Lilsovra and Bisir coming in from the wing to play as the main attackers. Epav will likely stay back during the attack, supporting the offense with his famous passing game. Keposlar and Liazar will likely run forward, giving them to opportunity to cross into to box. Meanwhile, defensive wingers Mizmi and Makav will probably support Epav in the middle of the field by playing as more of defensive midfielders, trying to stop any counter attacks. In the back, we have a strong trio comprised of Anën, Esso, and Aoiamoq. All in all, it will look more like this:

When I RP sports, RP bonuses become being on form. If a team enters a tournament and does no RPing, I will say they're in bad form, and if a team does a lot of good RPing, I will say they're on form

Analysis: Masters' Cup 3 Group A

With the first matches of the veterans tournament being played tonight, we thought we would take a look Lorrana's Group A.

Group A
Teams: Sarzonia (host), Britland Isles, Lorrana, Huelavia

This group was a tough draw for Lorrana, being drawn with two very on-form teams, Sarzonia and Huelavia. To add to this, Sarzonia will be playing at their home grounds and might have a home team advantage. I think the biggest determiner of where the group will go is Sunday, when Lorrana plays Huelavia. I think overall, Lorrana might be able to advance if they play well.
NS Stats are sometimes right, but sometimes wrong. TG me if you have questions, but the most important thing to know is that Lorrana is capitalist, even though the stats show otherwise

It's always frustrating when a team doesn't win a rivalry match.

Even though Sarzonia's national team matches against HUElavia don't carry the resonance of battles against either Delaclava or Banija, they have become an important barometre for Stars teams in multiple sports.

And even though the Sarzonian over-35 national football team didn't walk off the Dave Wilson Stadium pitch in defeat, they also couldn't get on track offensively and the result was a goalless draw in front of a surprisingly vibrant 78,912 supporters at Sarzonia's most venerable grounds.

"[Starting goalkeeper Will] Brantley had a phenomenal match, but so did HUElavia's goalie," Senior Stars manager Tyrone Manningham said. "Matt [Lynch, Senior Stars striker] had a couple balls he'd like to have back, but both teams had chances to come away with three points."

The other match in Group 1 saw Lorrana and The Britland Isles play to a 1-1 draw, so the result doesn't hurt Sarzonia as much as it could, but Manningham said he was taking a glass half empty approach.

"We could have put ourselves in first place two points clear," he said. "You don't want to lose points when you have a chance to win them."

For player-manager Parsamyan, MWC team a collaborative process

Tasked with heading up Delaclava's 35-and-over soccer team, Cleopatrana SC manager Baghdasar Parsamyan finds himself in a peculiar scenario.

"A lot of these guys are older than me," he joked. "They're either my former teammates, or guys I went head-to-head with. It's a bit strange telling them what to do."

Of course, Parsamyan's credentials are not in any doubt. As a striker, he was a significant factor in the revival of Cleopatrana SC, which capped off a decade of steady improvement with a surprise league title in Parsamyan's penultimate season as a player. And in just three seasons as the manager of his former team, he led his squad to the league title in the first two years and a runners-up finish this past season.

But Parsamyan, 37, isn't here to flex his resume or give out orders. "We've all played together for a long time. There's a lot of mutual respect," he explains. "We can all put our heads together and come up with a plan that's going to lead us to victory. In games, I'll be the one to make tactical and technical decisions. But we've all got to hold each other accountable, and I'm always going to be receptive to their input."

For example, while Parsamyan has himself listed as a reserve forward, he plans to largely take a backseat as a player. "Up front, Euph (Euphranor Papadimitrou) and Denys (Havrylyuk) are going to have things well covered," he said. "They're two of the strongest players in the league, age regardless. I'm fit and ready to go, but that's for emergency only."

The beginning of Parsamyan's managerial career was largely a result of fortuitous timing - even if Parsamyan was one of the few beneficiaries. During Delaclava's World Cup 85 qualifying campaign, Steckholl United and Phoenixes manager Tim Landers sought to handle a team pattern of misconduct internally; Landers suspended approximately half of the team, and then faced with an upcoming match against Simpralia in Cleopatrana, he reached out to then-Pharaohs manager Dhiego Vera to fill out the national team roster with Cleopatrana SC players in town. Vera obliged, but also ratted out Landers to the Delaclav Football Association, who sacked Landers after the match. But the Cleopatrana SC governing board was unimpressed with the pettiness of Vera, who was reportedly bitter about being passed over for the national team role, and dismissed him. Looking for a caretaker, they settled on the recently-retired Parsamyan. But he got that "interim" tag lifted just after leading the Pharaohs to the league title in his maiden season.

For that, Parsamyan has the respect of his peers and players. "He's always had a great football mind, and it's clear from what he's done with the team," said goalkeeper Vazha Gelashvili, who split time with defending league champions AC Espene and will start for the Molters. "He's a wonderful tactician and can fend off teams that have a lot more skill and youth by using what he's got."

With Catherina FC manager Johannes Detmer, currently in charge of the Phoenixes, rapidly aging, and Landers having moved on to assistant manage the Chromatika national team, Parsamyan is aware that a strong team showing for the 35+ team puts him in the running to soon take over the main squad. But Parsamyan isn't looking past the challenge at hand yet. "I think we're at an advantage somewhat, with so many of our guys still active and in top form," Parsamyan said. "But the downside is, everyone's coming off long 76-game seasons. It's harder to recover from, and I think we're still seeing that some guys are struggling through aches and pains... For now, my priority is to keep guys fresh so we can go have fun out there, and still get some good reps."

The Molters opened the MWC with a 3-2 loss to Srednjaci, blowing a 2-0 lead after two goals from Papadimitrou, with Delaclava starting strong but eventually wearing down. They will look to recover against Grey County.

The Schoenwetter Herald

Sport – Soccer

NS World Cup of Masters III

Kriegiersien 2-1 BohemiaIV

The title defender started with a victory into the tournament, with 12.345 people following the match in the home stadium in Schoenwetter, because they had nothing better to do.

The ratings of the team (A-F):

Goalkeeper
Sissy Looper (F)
Had only one job. Again she seemed a bit lackluster when she had to stop a ball and just looked how the shot slowly passed her.

Defender
Peter Boneyard (B)
Had everything under control, except his brutality. Nearly kicked Lawrence Cole into the hospital, but knowing about the hospitality of Kriegiersien hospitals the latter refused to go there.
Wilhelm Freesinger (A)
Stopped nearly every counter attack with all his routine and made a record of running 5 miles in the first half-time and 50 meter in the second. Scored a great long shot goal.
Hannes-Noah Travemünder (A)
Spit Yoga Fire, or maybe it was just the chilli from the day before. Running tireless until he got tired and was an important part of the Pressing played by the team.
Ingo Wiesner (D)
Dribbled like 40 years ago, but like 40 years ago often forgot to pass the ball.

Midfield
Timon Robert Haudels (C)
The playing coach not only coordinated the team, he even made a great pass and intercepted a ball.
Gert Lessels (C)
Made the deciding goal with a brilliant header. It was his first heading since the last World Cup and did not only decide the match, but also gave him a headache. Played stable.
Janis Ghiani (F)
Was nearly invisible in the whole match. Maybe his worst match since...ever?
Marky Mark (A)
Whenever he got the ball something great would happen. Sadly he only got it 5 times, resulting in the assist for two goals, the penalty and two corners.

Striker
Kai Alberz (E)
Worked out hard, but was totally taken out of the match by looking too much at the calves of Warren Dickens.
Marc Gocher (E)
Had the chance to decide the match multiple times, but missed even when the goal was empty and a penalty. An E for effort.

Garbelia 1-2 Kriegiersien

Interviewer: We can surely get someone for an interview directly after the match. Is my hair ok? Over there! Mr. Alberz, Kai Alberz! An interview please! A short interview for Kriegiersien TV?
Alberz: Whazzup?

You scored two goals today, how do you feel?

Great, just great man.

You look a bit exhausted.

Nono, I am great. Best time of my life.

Your dribblings today were amazing. Even confusing. What is your secret?

I used the old drunken monkey...money...monk style I learned in the desert once.

What is that?

You channel your inner chilli.. chi… and then you drink. Booze. Really good stuff here. Otterstuff.

Ah, that is why you dribbled back to your own goal once?

I am totally drunk.

Ah, I see, you are vomiting on my shoes. Well, thank you… for the short insightful interview.

You are welcome. Do you have some more of the stuff they sell here?

MWC defender Novikov still finding new opportunities

At 35 years old, the careers of most soccer players are either winding down, or have long been concluded. National team duties are wrapped up, and players are either playing out contracts with their long-time teams, or heading elsewhere in an often-futile attempt to prolong the inevitable.

But right back Nurzhan Novikov, who is representing Delaclava for the first time on the over-35 squad at the World Cup of Masters, believes his career is really just getting started. "I feel great, I'm playing better than ever," Novikov said. "I think now is my prime, and I could see myself playing until at least 45."

Looking at the trajectory of his career, it's not hard to see how he might have a point. Like most players who don't have the talent to crack the Delaclav top tier at a younger age, Novikov spent his 20's as a recreational and semi-pro player, splitting time between his sporting career and his job as a crab fisher. Moving to Quinniville for the job, Novikov arrived at Southwest Meredith at age 27. His first seven seasons at the club were in the regional leagues, and Novikov became a fixture of their stingy defense as they won provincial and regional championships.

When the United Football League formed its League B, Southwest Meredith was selected to join the competition, and they recovered from a slow start, climbing last to first over the 76-game season, winning the title with a 46-19-11 record and just 32 goals conceded, including just ten goals in the final 37 games. Novikov earned himself Defensive Player of the Year honors. Although Southwest Meredith couldn't come through the promotion playoffs to make the top tier, they will re-enter the League B as favorites to defend the title and get another shot at promotion. They'll have more talent to choose from - and Novikov himself may well get some calls from the UFL. His call-up for the Masters World Cup is just another step in his progression.

Novikov theorised that his longevity is largely due to the slow burn of his career. "So many guys burn themselves out in their teens and 20s. They overtrain, they play constantly, because they think that is their prime, and they want to squeeze out everything they can. But you have to put it all together at once - the strength, the speed, the skills, the tactical knowledge and experience. Your prime isn't a particular age, it's when you have all the pieces to play your best. I think if guys were more patient to develop and continue to study the game, they could also be at their best when everyone expects they should be done."

Going forward, Novikov wants to have a strong performance in the over-35 competition, but his eyes are set on facing the best of all ages. "I don't think coaches and scouts will look at my age as anything more than a number. If they follow my progress, they know I'm a brand new prospect. They'll judge what I'm actually doing on the field. I want to make the UFL, I'd love to do it with Southwest Meredith but I have to take the chances as they come. After that, we'll see. I've gotten where I am by never looking too far ahead."

Novikov earned his first international assist as the Molters defeated Grey County 3-0 for their first win of the competition, with Euphranor Papadimitrou scoring two goals and Denys Havrylyuk adding one. Papadimitrou now has four goals in the tournament. Delaclava next looks to break the winning streak of 2-0 Abanhfleft.

[OOC: No worries about being late, Atheara! You know the saying: Better late than never!]

Following Sarzonia's 2-0 defeat to Britland Isles, which dropped the team to 1-1-1, the team gathered in the dressing room to watch the match between Lorrana and HUElavia, unaware that the result of that one, a sweeping win for Lorrana, would make for interesting times in Group 1.

"The final score, Lorrana 4, HUElavia 1, and here is the table for Group 1."

The players looked. All four teams had one victory, one draw, and one defeat from three matches. All teams were on four points.

"So who's in first?" goalkeeper Will Brantley asked?"

"I don't know who's in first? Who's last in table?"

"How the hell would I know?"

Several players looked at Tyrone Manningham, the Sarzonian over-35 national team manager, trying to see if he would know which team would be considered first in the table.

"How the hell should I know? I'm a football manager, not a mathematician!"

The simple fact was that a four-way tie in the Group 1 table meant that each match in the second half of qualifying would take on far greater importance. It would start with Sarzonia's match away to HUElavia, which would mean the Senior Stars would have to get points against a longstanding rival. They then would have to face an on-form Lorrana side that just plastered Los Armarillos. Then came the revenge match against Britland Isles away. They would only be guaranteed to have one more match at Dave Wilson Stadium, and if they wanted to make it back to the quarterfinal round and possibly play in the final again, they would have to recover fast.

As for the other groups, none of them were nearly as "interesting" as Group 1. The first-time Delaclav delegation earned a sharp 4-2 victory over Abanhfleft and moved the senior Phoenixes into first place in the Group 2 table. Kriegiersien continued to show as the class side in senior football with an easy 3-0 victory that improved that team to 3-0-0. They were, in fact, the only team without either a draw or a defeat in the current edition of the World Cup of Masters. Atheara are currently the only other team without a loss, as they defeated Qasden 2-1 to claim first place in the Group 4 table.

Manningham reminded the media of an old foreign curse.

"May you live in interesting times," he said. "These are what I'd call interesting times."

Lorrana Faces Off Against Britland Isles Again

After a disappointing 1-1 draw against the Britland Isles in the first matchday, Lorrana will hope to do better this time around. Surprisingly, they've announced the same roster, albeit with one difference. Ezai will replace Liazar in the midfield, and he will likely be able to create more opportunities.

We'll post a match overview after the game tomorrow
NS Stats are sometimes right, but sometimes wrong. TG me if you have questions, but the most important thing to know is that Lorrana is capitalist, even though the stats show otherwise

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL TEAM - OVER 35'S

These ladies didn't win anything during the prime of their football careers. Can they win something now that they're all retired from the beautiful game?

BASIC INFORMATION
Name of nation: Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft
Demonym: Fleftic
Team colors: Blue, orange, and green
Style modifier: +3.25
Formation: 3-2-3-2
Manager: Heinrich Wurzmann (71 y/o, Abanhfleft/Pridnestrovia)

GK: Victoria Claire CARTER 48 y/o
Victoria Carter is to the Abanhfleft women's football team what Ferdinand Abbing is to the Pridnestrovian men's national football team: the familiar and ever-dependable shotstopping presence in between the sticks. Not as athletic as Abbing, mind, but for someone who's been out of the professional game for ten years she can still go a good job as goalkeeper.

RB: Claire Claudia OSGOOD 44 y/o

CB: Seraphina Dawn JACKSON 44 y/o

LB: Jordana Gabriella VALENTINE 43 y/o

RM: Isabella Evanilda MAYNARD 47 y/o

LM: Lea Yoon-hee CHOI 40 y/o

RW: Lilliana Esther PRESCOTT 43 y/o

CAM: Mary Jane Allison TORRES 43 y/o

LW: Adelaide Savitri SINGH 43 y/o

CF: Helen Chelsea STUART 43 y/o
Chelsea Stuart is one of the best goalscorers in the history of the APOC Coalition, and she could very well be the best woman to play football in Abanhfleft. She also could have been one of the best in the whole multiverse were it not for her loyalty to her club Arsenal de Releinthi and the general reluctance of the Samahang Futbol ng Abanhfleft to let its first generation of national team players to venture out into the greater multiverse.

CF: Alexandra Margarita Magdalena ROUSSEAU 43 y/o
She may be married to Leo Baxter and is the mother of their two children Miranda and Leo Junior, but Alexandra Rousseau can still create enough space for either herself or another teammate to score a goal. Maybe having two kids has something to do with this.

RESERVES
GK: Patricia Mae Willemar FOULKE 47 y/o

GK: Stephanie Kimberley BRYAN 40 y/o

RB: Amanda Ulrike WARREN 42 y/o

RCB: Miriam Catherine HANNIBAL 44 y/o

LCB: Claudine Belinda SAMANIEGO 46 y/o

LB: Tonya Lenore HEATON 46 y/o

CM: Aoibhe Merida VANCE 39 y/o

RW: Alma Rachel AZUL 42 y/o

LW: Cecilia Irma JOHNSON 42 y/o

Halfway And We Are Neck To Neck

This is your too chill for a reporter, Lorez Palubardi, today i want to analyze the current situation in Group 4, consisting of Atheara, Sannyamathland, Juvenis and Qasden. This was a sort of interesting group draw in my humble opinion. Atheara is not that known for Football in terms of Skill, but the Strategy and Technique of our players are what make them very popular outside of Atheara. I mean have you ever seen Yohann's backflip save back when he was 22 between Atheara and Mongolia back at the time?

Oh yes i am off track. Anyway as of this report, Atheara leads the Group with 7 Points, with Qasden at 6 Points. Juvenis at 2 Points and Sannymathland with 1 Point. Based on the report i have, the matches are 2-1-0 for Atheara, 2-0-1 for Qasden, 0-2-1 for Juvenis, and 0-1-2 for Sannyamathland. If this position stays until the end of Qualifiers, we can see Atheara and Qasden qualifying for the Quarter-Finals. Atheara will be facing off with Juvenis, then Sannyamathland, and finally Qasden once again.

Atheara had a draw against Juvenis with a score of 1-1 while Qasden went to win against Sannyamathland with a score of 2-1. The next day, Atheara wins against Sannyamathland with a score of 2-1, ironic, i know. Qasden won against Juvenis 3-2. The Veteran Minutemen wanted to end Qasden's winning streak, and so they did the next day with a score of 2-1, while Sannyamathland and Juvenis faced off with a score of 4-4, a draw as both were very desperate for a win. Oh yeah i forgot to say this was before today, meaning the matches yesterday.

Now for some facts about the players themselves. If it isn't obvious by now, Ligerdan Hannaris is the Father of Kladin Hannaris, whom played in the WJHC. Suprising coming from someone like him. Alexander and Kirdan are not twins, so you know, even though they have the same last name, they are siblings. They basically have good chemistry and can generally get along with the team on the field. Adiri Fernandes-Evans is originally not a RWF, but he was an AMF, but since we had no strikers over 35 that live in Atheara, he was told to take the spot.

We do expect a win or at least a draw from the Veterans! See you all later in the Match between Atheara and Juvenis.
Also, for anyone who wants to see The Stadium that Atheara plays in when playing as the Home Team, here it is.

The Football Fallacies
with The Man from Markovsky

SOME PEOPLE JUST CAN'T CATCH A BREAK

Hello and welcome to The Football Fallacies. Right, so apparently there's a new trend in football going on, and it's the fact that a bunch of retired football players have been coming out of their respective retirements to play some more football once again. Now, we all know that once a footballer gets past a certain age, they're just done for. There's no more hope for recovery once this happens. Retirement is the universally recognized signal that a footballer has realized that his or her skills are now clapped. Retirement is when the realization comes that it's time for you to let the next generation of players take over what you've started, and pass on everything you know to an even newer generation of youngsters who could become the next next generation, if you know what I mean? Playing any sort of competitive football after retirement outside of maybe testimonials is just not done. It's just not done.

But now Sarzonia have come in and set up this brand new tournament that only allows in players over the age of 35. There's no prerequisite for being retired for this tournament, but come on now. Aside from a handful of goalkeepers and maybe outfield players, nobody who's reached 35 years as a footballer is still playing beyond that. 35 is pretty much the point where retirement becomes more of a reality than just a possibility. But nope, the blokes in charge of Sarzonia's FA decided that we're gonna have a tournament for all the old fogeys, and they're gonna like it. So we're here now. The first time Sarzonia held this, it was the APOC Coalition as a whole that sent a team. I'm talking about the unholy union of Peter Schermer, Chelsea Stuart, and Chief fucking Deg himself! On paper, it sounds like a match somewhat made in heaven because, come on. It's Chief Deg. He may be the head of state of an entire nation but he is just not fit to even be the third wheel of a Schermer-Stuart strike partnership! But when it was out there for everyone to see, Peter and Chelsea didn't look like a strike partnership so much as a workers' strike! Unsurprisingly the APOC Coalition went out in the group stage in the first World Cup of Masters, and in the second one when it was just Abanhfleft, the same thing happened. I mean, it's just in our DNA by this point.

But now here, in the third ever World Cup of Masters, things are a little bit different. Well, I say different, but it's probably fair to say that they're still very much following the old Abanhfleft script of "either do well in the group stage and get eliminated in the first playoff round or just don't get out of the groups altogether". I don't know if the fact that this tournament is double round robin is a good thing or a bad one, but I'm just saying, if this particular group stage had ended now, we'd have been second in the group. And you know what that means: drawing a team that is either clearly loads better than we are, or a plucky underdog whom nobody fancies to do well against us but then upends all expectations and humiliates us anew. Yep, and people wonder why Fleftics have no confidence at all at their national teams.

Look, if we're all being perfectly honest, this tournament is as completely laboured and languishing as we all thought it would be. Definitely it's just like as I thought it would be. I mean, seriously. What else were you expecting from a bunch of forty-plus-something women, some of whom might have already hit menopause? It took a fucking wonderstrike from Chelsea Stuart to see us past Grey County the first time around, which means that even after all these years we still need the likes of fucking Chelsea Stuart to bail us out when we're in a sticky situation. No wonder the national team has gone downhill ever since she hung up her boots! And Chelsea had to come to our rescue once again against Srednjaci as well! Truly, without her, we really are nothing. At least Alex Rousseau-Baxter or whatever her name is now actually got us all three points. Having two kids really does wonders with your patience, I see.

And of course, against Delaclava we just fell apart. Well, what else were you expecting? Delaclava's squad is made up of guys who are still in their thirties. Some of them I think aren't actually retired yet! Some of them are probably still playing football on an active level, I think. So it's no wonder this Delaclava team outclassed us once we got into the home stretch. Yoga and some light exercise is one thing, but actually still being out there playing actual football is another when it comes to, you know, playing in an actual football tournament? Anyway, that's all there is for me. If you have any comments about this team or the World Cup of Masters in general, feel free to leave them down below. Until then, I've been the Man from Markovsky, still disappointed in our country.
