Ted had never liked being in the company of the media, preferring to let his driving do the talking. The Tumbran media was known for being unforgiving at the best of times, and he'd never enjoyed dealing with them. But his recent performances had made talking to them unavoidable, and he'd want them on his side for the second half of the season, where the tracks wouldn't suit the Kaylan as much. As he was led into the press room for the media to hurl questions at him, he gently smiled at the throng of cameras.

"Ted, how does it feel to have won a second feature race from thirteenth on the grid?"
"It feels good, yeah. A month ago, when I registered that double non-points finish at Drummond Vale, I didn't know whether I was up for this. Now, however..." He let out a gentle laugh, "now I know it's possible. And we're all aiming to keep it going.
"D'you think you're up for a championship fight?'
"It's a bit too early to be in the conversation for any of that. I know half the season has gone, and Anola and I have gotten two wins each — but this season has been nothing short of chaotic. It's all about remaining consistent, and trying to grab as many points finishes as possible."
"Both your wins so far have come in the wet. Is that perhaps a reason for your recent successes?"
"I'd like to think I'm an all-weather driver. Both my wins coming in wet races, though...I can see where that comes from!"
"With your team in pole position in the Constructors' Championship, how's your relationship with your team-mate, Anola?"
"We're very much similar. We get along very well, and we're both focused on helping the team achieve as much as possible this season. Sometimes she helps me, sometimes I help her. It's all about working together."
"Even with the chance you two might find yourself in a championship fight later in the season?"
"Ah...like I said, we're focused on the team. We're more focused on the team. Yeah. The team."
He kicked himself when he said that. Saying team three times? What was he thinking? The reporter shot a quizzical glance at him, perhaps waiting for him to elaborate, but when the response wasn't forthcoming, he shrugged his eyebrow and scribbled something down. He felt the need to say something.
"Eh... Anola's a capable racer, and what happens, will happen. I'm certainly looking forward to it, but we'll always be putting Kaylan first."
Even worse.
"How is the car?"
"It handles differently on different circuits. I won't lie - I had trouble at the beginning, but with the team we've slowly worked our way past these issues. She handles like a beauty, really. Improvements so far have made the car more stable, too, and that's something I especially appreciate, with the number of wet races we've been getting."
"Last question, Ted. Who, apart from Anola, would you say will be right up there with you at the finish?"
"I...uh...ah..." He gulped. Naming his own rivals? That was essentially just asking to be jinxed. The press leered. Trying to flash a brave smile, he tried to think.
"I'd have to say...uh...Janne Laukkanen...he's a very strong racer...and...ah...Heinz-Otto Junker. Thank you."
Satisfied, the reporters' cameras started flashing again as Ted tried to flash a smile. Avidly aware of the beads of sweat that were rolling down his neck, he hoped that the copious amounts of make-up wouldn't run.

God, he hated the press.

On the grid, again. Seventh row, again. But this time, the wrong side of the grid. Vartak to the right of him, Janne in front of him once more. The Abovian was proving to be a bit of a bugbear — or was he a bugbear to the Abovian? He hadn't interacted with the driver, and he didn't really feel the need to. They were on opposing teams, it was a large paddock, and there was enough on his plate already.

A bit of a delayed start for Ted, this time, but he managed to hold 14th as the circus plowed towards the first corner. Surging in front of Vartak, taking the racing line, Ted once again found himself side by side with the Abovian. He caught a glimpse of the driver in the pale blue car side-eyeing him, before the two broke for McLaughlin's, both drivers uncompromising. This was it, now. The two of them were in a fight for the WGP2 Drivers' Championship.

Ted once again got the better exit, speeding out of the nameless kink and going into the Slidey Right, trying to shake Janne off. But just as he did to Janne yesterday, he seemed to be receiving. Janne was proving impossible to shake off, the driver seemingly intent on following Ted through the grid. He tried to stop thinking and focus on the cars ahead, while ignoring the Nexus driver.

"Simon, who's up ahead?
"Gozum. Fichter. Matyivenko. If you can throw them into his path you should be able to shake him."
"Right."

Digging down, Ted steeled himself as he threw the car into corners, trying to overtake the three drivers named. All three of them didn't put up much resistance, save for Taras, who tried to hold Ted through the Triple Diamond — but eventually, he fought his way past. When he'd cleared the last of them, and the Aboveian was nowhere to be seen, he sighed a sigh of relief.

"Nowhere to be seen, aye?
"He's stuck in traffic. Good work. Anola's fighting for the lead.
"Knew she had it in her. She likes these, huh?"

He wasn't really looking for much in these Sprint Races, especially if he could keep up the Feature Race finishes. A good haul of points would suffice, and if he'd be able to weave his way through the grid, he'd be taking home another haul. Another fabulous pitstop saw him go onto the softer tyres, which would see him to the end of the race — and he did manage to improve on his position, overtaking both Valkryia and Armendaritze. Time, however, ran out for him to chase both Junker — his closest championship rival, and Devereux, who had proved to be quite the formidable driver in the PrismRiver. He'd have to settle for fifth, finishing less than a second behind the two drivers out in front. But Anola...she was in a class of her own. A second Sprint Race victory brought her to third in the Championship, just six behind Junker.

After the race, he'd talked to Anola — her elbow had been acting up, a past injury, as she opened up to him — and she was considering getting it checked out during the mid-season break. He encouraged her to do so — after all, they'd struck up a cordial if professional relationship, and he didn't want their partnership to be ended prematurely. He wished her all the best, and hoped that she would be able to finish the season.

All in all, eight points was a solid haul. The gap had shrunk to sixteen points, but it was still a formidable one nonetheless. In the Constructors', Kaylan had increased their lead to 46 points, courtesy of the double win by Kaylan over the weekend. They were in the driver's seat now — Xander, Anola, Ted, Manu, Vladimir, Simon and so many others — and they intended to see this through to the finish. Whatever it took.

Sprint Race
Hapilopper City, Hapilopper

After the rain of the previous day, the dry weather that greeted them this time around was rather nice.

Anola had started in sixth place, and passed through most of the field halfway through the race. It was weird to be in the lead, as it was hard to motivate yourself and gauge exactly how far ahead you were from the competition. Once again, the plan that she and Vladimir had come up with was working, and she was hell bent on making this one count.

As the adrenaline coursed through her, she could almost fully ignore the elbow. It still had a tiredness, a soreness to it, but as this track was a particularly fast one, she was pretty confident that it would hold up till the end. Afterwards, she'd be able to fully evaluate what to do about it. Afterwards, she could maybe, finally, talk to Xander about missing a few of the non-championship races to get it looked at. Afterwards, she could make sure that she'd be able to complete the season. Now, though? She was on the lead, and she was pretty confident that she would win.

Getting in for a stop, Vladimir's voice came over comms.

"How're you holding up, Anola?" he said, a hint of concern.

"Doing fine," she replied, "I've got this. We can talk about the rest of it after."

"Good," he stated, knowing there was no point in trying to convince her otherwise, "You're about ten seconds ahead of Hakusoe - keep doing what you're doing and you should be in the clear."

Five tracks into her World Grand Prix career, one thing was extremely clear to Anola - sprint races agreed with her. 35 of her points were from Sprint Races, and she'd never finished worse than 8th in a Sprint Race. She was able to predict things, anticipate actions and reactions, and stick to the plan that she would discuss with Vladimir the night before.

As she entered the last lap with a comfortable lead, knowing that her tires would hold up, she felt a jabbing pain in her elbow that was a bit different from the dull ache that had accompanied her for most of the hour or so that she'd been in the vehicle. Gritting her teeth, she did her best to try to bear most of the weight of the wheel on her right hand, but there wasn't much that she could do except bear through the pain. She couldn't afford to lose control of the vehicle entirely or spin out when she was winning, after all.

That last lap was one of misery that she could hardly recall later. Vladimir told her that she lost five seconds of her lead during it, but she was sure that she was lucky that it hadn't been worse. When she got out of the vehicle, she could barely lift her arm at all. Vladimir shot her one look, and she simply nodded. There wasn't really a point in denying it. She needed help.

The victory would place her in third place overall in the Drivers' Standings behind Ted and Heinz-Otto Junker. True to her form, fifty of her sixty-five points were from Sprints Races. Hopefully, she'd be able to keep that up in the second half of the season.

After chatting with Ted - who had finished in sixth, giving Kaylan a margin of forty-six points in the Team Standings - she made her way wearily to Xander's office. He was a bit of a workaholic, and would likely not have left yet. Vladimir had offered to go with her, but she'd turned it down - this was her issue, after all.

So, she walked into the office with a written letter from Bella Han, a sense of trepidation around her. Before he could say anything, she put the piece of paper on her desk.

"Xander," she stated, looking at him directly, her tone apologetic, "I need some time off - maybe need to miss Iskohtirinkyy and Bearden Waterfront Circuit. It's my left elbow - I got in an accident when I was a teenager when a drunk driver hit me and it's never healed right. I managed to get through the race here, but if I'm going to finish the season, I need to get it looked at and taken care of. I'll make sure to hold off on any procedures that take longer recovery till the offseason - it's mostly a trip to make sure that it doesn't hurt as much and that I can put pressure on it. Would that be all right?"

She awaited his answer.

Paul Valentini and Kevin Ammaker spent most of the flight back from Hapilopper talking about why everything seemed to be unraveling all at once.
Two consecutive weekends had been a total wipeout for the Scuderia, with the first DNF of the season in Stelburg when Pedro's engine lost a cylinder in the sprint race followed by a disastrous qualifying and Feature race in Hap City; Sakite wasn't faring much better, but she was bringing the car home and able to give decent feedback on the performance of the car under the conditions faced.

"I think we really need to protect PC's psyche right now, Paul. He can be the team leader over the second half of the season, but he needs to step away for a week, 10 days and clear his head. Send him back home--of course he can come to races if he wants--and tell him to recharge his batteries." Ammaker knew that if a driver got beyond a point of no return mentally, the relationship with the mechanics would start to be affected, from both ends.

"Is the value of Jordan's input greater than a second row start at the first mid-season race?" Valentini was really throwing out the question rhetorically; having Crowe running both chassis' on an alternate basis over race distances would surely provide data to see if the performance of the cars was the same, and what variables the driver's styles contributed.

"Saki can use all the miles in the car that we can give her. I think we should set her up to go as fast as she dares until the tires give up. I think she can outrun Shaw, Jukkenna, Yume, Rikikida. I'll be interested to see what the pit lane delta is." At this point it was cleat the decision was made. Jordan Crowe would fill in for Pedro Carballal in the Scuderia Orange Cow #13 PRL01-2 for the mid-season non-championship races.

Hapilopper City Grand Prix Circuit
Sprint Race

''Yessssssss! Slay girllllll! Wooohooo!'' Manu shouted as he pulled off his headphones and put his hands on Xander's shoulders to shake the Kaylan Team Principal. A smile appeared on Xander's face as the team celebrated once again. Kaylan had absolutely dominated this weekend. First, a feature race win from Ted. Now, a sprint race win from Anola. Another chapter written into their Cinderella story. Once again, everything had clicked. Pit crew was at their absolute best, Anola had put down a fantastic drive and Ted had managed to climb up to P5, bringing even more points for himself and the team. Atmosphere after the race was amazing. Anola up on the podium, getting soaked in champagne while a small fan army from Togonistan who had travelled to Hapilopper, standing on the tribunes all dressed up in light green, let out a mighty Togoni haka war chant to celebrate the victory:

Whanau roto i Chromatika,
Rere anahere!
Tore kai huruhura,
Riaki paraihe!

Kakari! Kakari! Kakari!

Born in Chromatika,
The flying angel!
Young brave warrioress,
Lifting up her trophy!

Fight on! Fight on! Fight on!

Once all the celebrations were done, the team slowly started packing their stuff while Xander made his way to his second home. A small modular house set up in the team area which acted as his office during race weekends. While lacking the nice view that his real office back in the HQ had, as well as being roughly three times smaller, all the necessities were still there. A small office table with a chair, a laptop, a small wardrobe and even a decent-sized TV on the wall. Considering he would spend most of his time during weekends out on the paddock anyways, it was more than enough. Xander had just sat down on his chair and turned on the TV to watch some post-race analysis when he heard a knock on the door. ''Yes? Come on in!'' Xander said with a loud clear voice. He saw the door open and Anola walk in, placing a piece of paper on his desk.

Xander sat calmly on his chair as he listened to what Anola had to say. Once she was done, Xander picked up the paper and, having taken a quick look at it, handed it back to Anola. He looked at her for a moment and, without saying anything, took out his phone, dialled a number and put the phone to his ear: ''Hello? Yes, it's Xander. Listen, I need a favor from you. Can you book a seat for the first flight to Chromatika? Yes, just for one. In two hours? Excellent, thank you very much!''

Having hung up, he looked Anola in the eyes and said calmly: ''You'll be leaving in two hours. Go pack your stuff, then find Rai on the paddock. He will give you a ride to the airport. The sooner you get it looked at, the better. Call me when you get there, so we know you've arrived safely... and please, do get as much rest as you need,'' Xander smiled slightly, before he continued: ''We're all proud of what you've done so far and we need you back in one piece, alright?'' Xander stood up and gave a friendly hug to Anola. ''Anything you need, you have my number. We'll keep in touch, okay?''

Having sent Anola out, Xander took a seat behind his desk again and dialled another number: ''Darian, are you still in the garage? I need you to come over, we have to talk about your upcoming WGP2 race. Yes, you heard me. The time has come, we need you to step in.''

Few days later, the news became official. Darian Vilau will step in to replace Anola Melani for the first two non-championship rounds.

How do you come to the Nykipiflugpuu....... ?.

To arrive in the Nykipiflugpuu, first you have to come to Timantirkas. Flights to Timantirkas are serving only because of Nordenflyg, the airline of the Aboveland. Flights are leaving always from the capital village of the Aboveland, Vankkavalta, but for the WGP2 Race of the Polestar the frequency of flights will amount. Travel will be available through Vankkavalta, Avsidesliggendevuoret, Iskajärvi, Nordenhavn, Vakkerimaa and Brukkifordet.

As because the village of Külmäkutitõmbuvadipallyyt is small and respectable, the hotel and roof for visitors will be available more in Timantirkas, but there has been limited capacity.

Visitors to the Nykipiflugpuu must have a travel visa for Abovian Special Divisions travel and a visa to enter the Nykipiflugpuu, as well as a Declaration of Intent, Reason and Purpose (DIRP) printed between 23 and 27 hours before travel to Nykipiflugpuu. Travel outside of Timantirkas is restricted by the central government of Nykipiflugpuu; visitors have can arrange their machines to journey beyond the capital village but only after stating the one of the planned route, announcement of their destination, and presentation and stamping of the each one of their DIRPs.

Generally

Welcome to the Nykipiflugpuu Tourism and Sporting Board official generally and information zone for the upcoming WGP2 Race of the Polestar, in good place Külmäkutitõmbuvadipallyyt, Nykipiflugpuu, (pronounced: cool-mah-coo-tee-toim-bu-va-di-PAH-lit); literally, "Ball-shrivelingly cold place"). The year before this year the NTSB had attempted to enter the World Grand Prix Championship schedule by bidding for consideration in the WPCC18 calendar, submitting a variation of Iskohtirinkyy to the World Grand Prix Organize,. Because of reasons, the authentic Ishoktirinkyy circuit design was said no by WPCC and so Nykipiflugpuu we had to start over from the beginning. After WPCC said that he wanted to consider different types of original circuits for the WGP2 calendar, the lower type of WPCC, the Iskohtirinkyy was accept by him into the calendar as a race where there is none points. As such, it brings me great happiness. We are excited to welcome peoples from all around the universe to our good place island in the Arctic circle for a good time and fun race !.

What is the circuit ?.
Iskohtirinkyy is a temporary racing circle in the place Külmäkutitõmbuvadipallyyt, Nykipiflugpuu, a little bit away from Timantirkas, the capital village of Nykipiflugpuu. In before the possibility to appear in WGP2, the place of what it is Iskohtirinkyy is was just a field of ice on beside the village of Külmäkutitõmbuvadipallyyt, of the population 3.030; the field was used for racing before with no determined layout: Nykipik traditional ice racing would happen, sometimes in using dog sleds and in sometimes others traditional folkrace racing of made at home machines. On the field, heroes of Nykipiflugpuu happened like for example Kaidi Enni Saino-Iakkyy, very respected ice racer, and in more recent example it was Taavi Kiirejäävõisteja.

Image
It is the layout of Iskohtirinkyy

How it is it?.

Iskohtirinkyy is construct on solid ice base which is solid ice and snow all of the year, in the dark and the bright as well. Now in May, even though the sunlight is doesn't go away for until the end of the year, the low temperatures and snow and ice weather allows for a solid ice base to be maintained and stay confident. The design of the circle was finalized by Nykipish engineers and designers in early January in the dark of the year, with a more solid of the ice base than now it's in the bright. however,, in the weeks before the WGP2 Race of the Polestar, cold weather is happening so that means the ice it is forming nicely.

A complete round of the circle explaining

In the WGP2 Race of the Polestar, drivers will navigate a treacherous circle, a racetrack carved out of the solid ice of the glaciers of Nykipiflugpuu. The entire track surface (with the exception of the pitlane, which is a temporary rubber base, instead of the asphalt previously mentioned) is composed of solid ice, with a light dusting of snow upon the road a strong possibility. The track limits are banks of compacted snow between one and two meters in height. Drivers will start the race from the main straight, separate from the rest of the circuit and also with a solid ice base (with the intention of preserving the quality of the ice surface, it was decided for the starting grid to be positioned outside of the racing surface which would itself naturally deteriorate over a race distance). Once off the main straight, the WGP2 grid enters a series of 11 twisty turns around the flat circle, picking up speed between turns 2 and 5, maintaining speed through to turn 7, accelerating down to turn 8 and nursing their cars around the final corners to finish a lap. As the starting straight is detached from the circuit, the race will finish when the leading driver has crossed the finish line between turns 7 and 8; laps will be counted as the leader crosses the finish line on each lap.

Important details for the drivers to know it !.

Drivers must consider the following aspects of the WGP2 Race of the Polestar, to arrive in Nykipiflugpuu fully prepared for the World Grand Prix Championship’s first ever ice race:

  • An especially important detail: all teams MUST fit studs or chains on their vehicles to be eligible for competing on ice. Abovian and Nykipish contractors will offer studding and chaining services for teams which wish to retrofit their vehicles for the event but do not count with the necessary experience to do so.
  • Any precipitation in Nykipiflugpuu will be solid; snow flurries are common, and when combined with the winds affecting the circuit both visibility and grip might be severely compromised during the race.
  • The location of Iskohtirinkyy in particular means that gusting winds are to be expected during the race. Drivers and teams must pay close attention to the changing direction and speed of the winds during the race, as gusts might be strong enough to catch drivers out.
  • The snowbanks lining the racetrack will condition the participants' driving styles. The low grip offered by the ice surface means that drivers will have to abandon common circuit racing techniques and drive their vehicles sideways (powersliding) to carry the maximum amount of speed around medium and sharper corners, as well as through the faster sections of the circuit. A common technique used in ice racing is for drivers to lean their vehicles on the solid snowbanks lining the circuit: this way, they may carry speed into corners and depend on the solid banks to push the cars back onto the track.
  • DESPITE the solidness of the snowbanks, striking a bank with just a little too much speed WILL suck a vehicle into the bank and spell the end of the race for the affected driver. Snowbanks are a double edged sword: faster when used properly, deadly when abused.
  • As it is the month of May, the sun doesn't, and will not, set for months. The WGP2 Race of the Polestar will be held entirely at solar noon, regardless of the start time of the race.
  • Owing to Nykipiflugpuu's remote, desolate location within the Arctic circle, temperatures during race day will hover below 0ºC. Temperatures between -5ºC and -15ºC are to be expected; drivers and teams should prepare accordingly for the extreme weather.

PB-Viska Headquarters
Aldauren Ginintella's Room

Strategy meetings are important for the team principal of PB-Viska. A lot of unknowns can affect the options available to them after each race. The aftermath of the Preston Autos Hapiloppian International Trophy is no exception. With Artur in the room, Aldauren opened the meeting that will set the stage for what they would discuss. “The WGP2 standings have just been projected for the second half of the WGPC season. The titles has been coveted by teams and drivers over the years, and one that we’d like to think we’re the best in. I can't help but think we can't compete for the top spot now, if I'm being realistic, Artur. But we are nipping in the heels of Fireline and MontagneGP for third, which is good. It might take a miracle to go higher than that. But if we take each opportunity, we can be in a very good position. If not, as much as it will disappoint all of us, it will be fine in the grand scheme of things. It has been awesome working with you."

How Aldauren imagines Külmäkutitõmbuvadipallyyt in Nykipiflugpuu

Aldauren's eyes were glassy, and he was staring at the window that gives a view of Smesiakoasp Valley, the geographical feature where PB Raceway is located. It was a nice, calm day, and the temperature was hovering around 20 degrees, thanks to the breeze sucked into the valley. He thought the renovated track was nice. Its original layout had been one of his all-time favorites: driving his personal car there usually makes his mood good.

He placed a hand on the window, which would leave a mark on the glass, and lowered the blinds.

There were a few knocks on the door.

"What's up?" Aldauren said, turning to face the entrance to his room.

"We have a few meetings this week, and more preparations for the Iskohtirinkyy race. Just like to make sure we didn't forget anything."

"Very well."

There is no rest for the very busy team principal.

Hapilopper City, Hapilopper
Feature Race

Janne’s Chase Cutter doesn’t hesitate off the line, despite the patter of the rain on his helmet increasing in volume just moments before the five red lights, still visible through the light mist, fade to black. Unaffected by the usual machinations stemmed from his mid-pack qualifying anxiety, he’s focused but expressionless. His start is so effortless that he finds the time to clear his throat past the First Right—however, it’s not particularly quick. Rod Gozum has a terrible start and drops almost immediately behind him, but the Schutzenphalian machine of Alex Márquez ahead, and the Pryfors-Bilar of Vartak, are as unfazed as the #17 car.

As he approaches the first proper corner, the Downhill Pass, the grip suddenly disappears. He’s quick to catch the slide around the apex, with help from the Chase Cutter and its all-eight-wheel-drive system, and as the conditions are so feisty it, fortunately loses him little time. His mirrors, just two turns into the race, have essentially become useless by now, and the HUD on his visor gives the only clues of the drivers around him: Vartak ahead, Wingelaar behind, and by a widening margin.

The grid quickly settles into a rhythm, and as the cars begin to space out and the visibility improves, Janne kicks his pace up a notch. It’s taken him the better part of four laps to wear some heat into his tyres in a somewhat even manner, the second sets of tyres on each end of his car have heated up more than those on the axles right in front, but he’s managed to find a balance between hugging a dryer line and grazing the wetter parts of the track to keep his temperatures stable. It’s an extra bit of hassle, but it’s nothing he can’t manage.

However, those four laps have allowed a certain Tumbran to close in on him in tenth. Just five races ago, at the start of the season, Ted Pressley had been saved by the bell after signing last-minute with the Kaylan Racing outfit. Now, after his maiden victory in a soaked race in Siovanija and Teusland, he’d found himself rocketing right past him in the championship standings—Janne had been so preoccupied with the early lead built by Adriana Kowalski and Skiia Vialiv that he’d failed to realize the real title contenders floating to the top: a classic Abovian misjudgement.

But Janne is determined to keep the Tumbran from rocketing past him on track. Though it’s his HUD that first hints at the presence of the hungry Kaylan driver’s breath on his neck, as the two exit the Triple Diamond Chicane the yellow nose of the Togonistani machine peeks out from the plume of spray kicked up by the Chase Cutter. Despite the Imagikinetic converters’ power having been capped for the season, to keep every vehicle balanced on performance, the Nimban vessel is quicker to reach its top speed than the car behind, though it’s top end power begins to falter once it stops accelerating.

Janne creeps across from the left to the right side of the track as the two rivals barrel down past the start/finish line. Ted looks eager to make his move, swerving away from the rear of the Chase Cutter as soon as he can, but his feline preparations don’t stick. Janne is slick to take the first sharp left of the track violently, keeping his car sideways enough to glide over the tarmac without losing speed; its where his all wheel drive comes in handy against the conventional Kaylan racer.

Alas, the battle doesn’t end a single corner into the fifth lap. As the pair enter the rather infamous OCTAW corner, Janne backs off. As Pressley aims for the inside, the Abovian quickly closes the door, forcing the Tumbran to slow down and go wide out towards Chicken Bone Alley. Antti, until now silent, chips in with a “take it easy.” Perhaps Janne’s defense had pushed Pressley too close to the wall.

Throughout the dogfight, the pair dodge traffic on their way up the field. Embroiled in a tooth-and-nail battle, though with Janne always holding his own in the corners and just keeping Pressley behind, the rivals somehow manage not to sacrifice outright pace. The traffic, at some points, works to Janne’s advantage. Down past Slidey Right, Janne slips past Pressley’s Chromatikan teammate: the Tumbran, understandably careful not to take himself out along with his teammate, takes a couple of corners to get past her. The moment’s pause in the battle is enough to give Janne an extra buffer ahead.

Yet his new gap is short lived. By now, his tyres have begun to wear, and though the rain has remained constant he can no longer afford to stray off the racing line to keep temperatures down. Though four of his eight tyres begin to overheat, and Pressley’s gap to him starts to inch ever closer to zero, the Tumbran surprisingly decides to pit from the battle first. Antti is quiet through the radio, but the silence speaks volumes. They’re both on the same frequency.

Pressley’s decision to attempt an undercut gives Janne a gasp of fresh air. Ahead, only Vatrak remains, though they’re likely to pit soon as well. Taking his chance, the Abovian pits on the next lap, as does the driver ahead. Despite the Chase Cutter’s wheels being double those of the Diarcesian machine, Janne’s pit stop isn’t particularly slow. Vartak exits as many seconds ahead as they’d entered the pits, and Janne comes out neck and neck with Pressley, again. With both of them, and Vartak ahead, on fresh tyres, it’s now down to whoever could hold their own the hardest.

As the rain picks up again, the racing line begins to disappear, and Janne goes on the attack. He again denies Pressley entry around McLaughlin’s, and slides through the Slidey Right on his way down towards OCTAW. For a couple of laps, he’s gaining—fast—on Vartak, but keeping his manicured gap behind to Pressley steady.

With just over ten laps to go, the rain begins to wane again, and as the overcast sky begins to glow a comforting Nimban cyan, the racing line starts to dry. His gap to Vartak, steadily under half a second, remains, but his gap behind to Pressley almost vanishes by the time the three have reached the main straight. With four of Janne’s eight tyres beginning to heat up, his exit out of the final chicane is less than ideal. The same goes for Vartak, but not for Pressley. As the trio fly past the start-finish line, Janne is forced to the left, and inside, for the Downhill Pass. Vartak, as he can see to his right, has edged him slightly down the middle, but its Pressley who’s caused this knock-on effect and, ultimately has clawed a hair further in front than the both of the others.

With so little left in the race, Janne decides against heroics. He brakes early for the Downhill Pass, his rear front and rear rear tyres locking up on the damp tarmac, and lets the other two past. He groans, punching his steering wheel as he passes McLaughlin’s. Antti remains silent.

When the podium celebrations ensue, Janne fights to keep a cheery face. He’s not angry at his rivals—how could he be angry at Ted Pressley after such a colossal drive?—but he struggles to keep his ire contained below his throat. Bested by a rookie, in a fledgling team, from a grid spot further below his own.

He—and Nexus—need a breakthrough. Soon.

Marina Vladislavovna Smirnitskaya fidgeted around just behind the scenes of the press conference room as she waited for the current lineup of drivers to finish their conference. Across the hallway from her, she watched as Taras Gavrilovich Matviyenko walked around the little cubicle with an inscrutable look on his face. A random passerby would be forgiven for thinking that Matviyenko was merely passing the time while he waited to take his place in the press conference. But Marina knew better. She could hear Taras snapping his fingers, a sure sign that his mind was churning with myriad thoughts, many not really meant for sharing. It was to be expected in recent weeks; not only did Taras have a poor race but he also seemed to take offense at the fact that his teammate, Major Harry Zoomtwat of Featherstonehaugh Cholmondeley, had finished ahead of him once again.

This had never been an issue with any other past teammate of Taras. Normally, Taras was very supportive of his teammate, and would even be the first one to congratulate them if they did well in the race. But that had all changed once Zoomtwat had arrived in Myrilsk. And it wasn't just Matviyenko whose attitude had changed once Zoomtwat came to the team. Almost everyone from team principal Vasily Gatutin on down became crankier, angrier versions of themselves who were quicker to lash out at even the slightest of provocations. Even Marina herself had found herself getting stressed more often about the team's public relations activities, mostly because she was trying to keep the rest of the team from saying something unsavory because of how agitated and cranky everyone was feeling now. This was not the UrGa Motorsports Division that Marina had joined all those years before. That was a team that had been founded on the principles of enjoying motorsports for what it was, one of the fastest sports in the known earth. Everyone loved the team, and they loved being in it. They weren't workers or employees; they were members. They were supportive of each other and always worked to find the best for the whole team. This current UrGa team was a shadow of that team that had celebrated the first ever Coalition Grand Prix Racing Association Drivers' and Constructors' Championship. And it pained her to see this team fall so far and so hard.

"Marina," Taras suddenly called out to her. Marina walked over to him and asked, "What is it, Gavrilich?"

"I need your help," Taras replied. "Can you help me do this one thing?"

"Of course, Taras," Marina nodded her head. "What do you want me to do?"

"I've been thinking about how the season has been going for us so far," Matviyenko said. "I think we can all agree that things have not gone the way that we all probably would have wanted. And I've taken a look at the schedule coming up, and for the first time in my life I'm actually glad that we have some non-championship races. Look, I need your help talking to Vasily Semyonovich about this. Can I count on your help, Marina?"

"Of course, Taras Gavrilovich, Marina nodded. "Just as long as you tell me what it is that you want to tell Vasily Semyonovich."

"I want to sit out the non-championship races," Taras said. "Not only do I think that I'm not in the right frame of mind to continue racing in the near future, but I also think that I really do need to have some time off behind the wheel just to get myself out of this funk. I just can't think of any other solution to this problem that I haven't already tried."

Marina gasped. "Are you sure about this, Taras?" she asked him. "You know, the WGP2 has a limit on driver moves this season. And all that paperwork that we would have to submit to them, not to mention who we'll have to get to replace you for all three races... Bozhe moy, Taras. You really do need some help telling that to Vasily Semyonovich. He's sure to not like it."

"Exactly why I asked for your help in getting this to him," Taras smiled. "Don't worry about it though, Vladislav'na. I'll be back in time for Diarcesia. I just need to take the next few weeks off to figure out where in the world my life is going, and I figured going back to Myrilsk and just disconnecting for a few weeks could very well do the trick."

"It's just so nice to finally be able to just sit back and relax and catch up with my older brother, you know?" Olga Semyonovna Gatutina, team principal of UrGa Motorsports Division's Stock Car Department, the team representing UrGa in NSSCRA, said to Vasily Semyonovich Gatutin as the two of them went inside an unoccupied conference room. Both of them were carrying cups of coffee which they sipped as they took a pair of chairs inside the room and sat down.

"The same to you, sister," Vasily said, raising his coffee in a toast. "How's your promotional tour doing?"

"Like it always does," Olga sighed. "Archer the Asshole is still determined to not make any friends in Hapilopper, and now Cärinthen is also making her own stink about representation in HASCAR or whatever her agenda is at the moment."

"Bozhe moy," Vasily muttered. "And I thought dealing with just one nuisance of a driver was a challenge. Maybe I should spend some time in your shoes, see if I can learn something to lengthen my patience with Zoomtwat."

"Trust me, brother, one day in my shoes and you'll wish your only worry is Zoomtwat," Olga snorted. "Anyway, if you ask me, I'd be more than willing to swap either one of my charges for yours. What's your problem with him, anyway?"

"I don't have a problem with Zoomtwat per se," Vasily explained with a shrug. "It's more about the situation by which he came to be in that seat. Sure, he was able to get the team our first podium this season, but in testing he was nothing spectacular, you know what I mean? I'd have preferred someone like Vialiv or Melani, but the board, they insisted on Zoomtwat. I mean, I know I could have gone behind their backs and offered the seat to someone else, but I wasn't really interested in playing that game this season. Just... I didn't want to play it."

"So what does that make him then? A pay driver?"

"Maybe, but if that were the chase, I'd have seen the boost to our finances. Did you know that the man hunts for game on his biplane in his journeys to the next track on the calendar? If he was paying us for that seat, you would expect him to hand over at least a share from that meat, tusks, and blubber that I'm sure he's selling off to the highest bidder..." Vasily trailed off as he noticed Marina Smirnitskaya knocking on the door of the conference room. He stood up to open the door, and he stood there while Marina whispered something to him. Then Marina left, and Vasily remained stood there before he muttered, "Well, shit."

"Why? What is it?" Olga asked him.

"I think I'm going to need a new driver for the next few weeks," Vasily replied.

The First Half Ends As It Began

Postby TJUN-ia » Wed May 05, 2021 10:11 am

Clearly, his grand illusions of being someone worth watching came race day was just a lie he told himself. He told himself he wanted to become the Ultimate Warrior of the racing world, someone everyone wanted to cheer for, but his two performances in Hapilopper City made him look like Ali: someone who can talk the talk, but cannot walk the walk at all (mainly due to forces against his will).

The main fact about this weekend in Hapilopper is that he had to retire after only 8 laps. He started that race in 22nd and was looking to make good use of his own abilities, but he would not get an opportunity to do that at all and he was forced to enter the pit lane for good after a very short while due to a reason or something. He wasn't exactly sure what caused his race to end that quickly, but it still made his heart sink as he watched the rest of the race from the garage of Nykipiflugpuun Noortekoondis. Ted Pressley took the win and the fastest lap over Indra Vartak and Janne Laukkanen while Lukas Fichter made use of his good starting position to take home more points in 6th. That meant that, for the Sprint Race on Sunday, Lukas would be 9th and Batu would be dead last.

The good thing about starting from dead last is that the only way Batu could go was up the order, but how far up was the main question on many a mind entering Sunday in the City. As it would turn out, not a lot higher at all and Batu went a bit easy on the car this time to try and avoid another DNF, costing him the determined drive he was looking for after yesterday. He ended up 24th and a lap down with Fitcher not fairing better in 18th, another day wasted for the men in red and blue. Anola Melani won over Chiruno Hakusoe and Heinz-Otto Junker, with Pressley still leading the way by 16 points after half of the season, but the picture for Batu wasn't looking good at all. While Fitcher was in 17th, Batu was in 21st as the lowest-placed podium scorer by a long shot. NN as a team were, as a result, down in 12th and certainly looking for answers entering the non-championship races.

With the grid for Race 1 set by reversed championship order, Batu knew he would starting that race from 7th - and what a race it would be. The event was taking place in Nykipiflugpuu itself, the icy home of his team, and the Iskohtirinkyy circuit in Külmäkutitõmbuvadipallyyt. Batu knew that he had to perform to his best in front of the team's home crowd, and that is exactly why he wrote a message to himself on the wall of his team space, to remind himself of what he could do with the right mindset:

Nykipiflugpuu Feature Race, Practice; 5th of May

Ryker Lane, sash flapping in the chilling breeze over the shoulder of a puffy red greatcoat, looks out into white and shudders. “And this is just like what Frostburgh was like?”

“Mhm!” Victoria Light huddles up next to him, augmenting her own turquoise greatcoat (four corners poking out where her laptop is tucked into a large side pocket made for that purpose) with the slight protection of her folded arms. “Frostburgh was maybe a bit quainter but the weather was… That.” She gestures out a bit with one of her arms – then reaches around to tuck her beau closer to her. “Come here. Don’t want you shivering.”

“It’s cold; I think it’s understandable that I’m shivering.”

“It’s because you’re all bone and muscle!” Victoria smiles wryly, prodding Ryker in the side; he squirms a touch, feet clanging on the metal bridge and dislodging a puff of snow that falls to the track beneath them. “My sister’s in medicine, remember? I’ve picked up one or two things.”

“History, biology…” Ryker glances down with a smile distinctly warmer than he is. “Imagination, Victoria. I will never get over being impressed by you, you know that?”

“Ah… Pfft. Just pick things up along the way, you know?” Victoria looks away momentarily, then meets his eyes again, blushing just a little. “Thanks, Ryker.”

They hold one another’s gaze for a moment – then Ryker frowns, head lifting as his ears pick out something new among the quiet roars of the engine noise. Listening, Victoria hears it too, growing louder – something between a thundering of hooves and an electric drill. She smiles again; it’s a familiar sound, to her.

Ryker looks back at her and her new expression. His eyes narrow, the corner of his lips quirking up in amusement. “Okay, what did you lot do this time?”

“Give it a moment.”

A moment passes.

Then, light, glinting off the ice, visible even through the flurry of snow. Blue light.

Janne Laukkanen’s Chase Cutter blasts from behind the snowbank that marks Turn 7, launching itself away and onto the straight dear Imagination those are caterpillar tracks.

Ryker blinks. He turns back to Victoria, mouth flapping open and closed even as her already smug expression grows smugger and smugger by the second – right up to the point at which she bursts out laughing, prompting Ryker to fall into a fit of giggling along with her. “What –” he stops, trying to breath – “what was that?”

“That was Professor Vertilan Nas!” Victoria grins. “Been working on those tracks as a late birthday present for Gertrude, of all things – don’t have a clue how he found the time but they seem to be working well!” She gestures out towards where the car has disappeared behind the snow once again. “From what Benedi told me, it was surprisingly easy to fit the two rear tracks on their axles and they only had to fabricate a few new components for the steering at the front to accommodate the front two.” She shrugs. “Had to take out most of the front wing and the fairings but aerodynamics are going to be far less important here than mechanical grip.”

“And we’ve got IDIS for downforce, no?”

Victoria puffs up with pride. “Exactly! Oh – and having four tracks instead of eight wheels means we’ve been able to take out the Imagithermal convertor, too, so the car’s much lighter than it was.”

Ryker shakes his head, chuckling to himself. “Imagination, you’re making me want to drive this thing – sounds like something Storm himself would dream up.” He folds his arms. “Good for the two who will, though, honestly!”

He looks out into the middle distance, smile slowly fading, shifting to something more thoughtful as he lets his folded arms down, forming a support against the railing. Victoria watches, examining. “You’re not worried, just… Pensive.”

Ryker nods. “Thinking about the future. Jean and I aren’t going to be around forever, especially not with Janne doing as well as he is. It’s good that we’ve been doing so much work to bolster the junior lately, but… Well. If they’re getting a drive, then someone else isn’t.” He tilts his head. “That’s what makes sense, after all.”

Victoria steps in closer, tucking her head underneath his to rest on his shoulder. After a moment of rest, she answers. “You’ll always have a place in the team, you know that? You’re valued, Ryker – you’ve got so much experience with everything by now, and you’re good at motivating people. You could fit in anywhere – I know that anyone back at the HQ would say the same. And if you want to drive somewhere else, well. You’re a World Champion. Who wouldn’t take you?”

Another moment passes.

“Besides,” she continues, in a quieter voice, and Ryker angles his head down to see her, their faces now barely centimetres apart. Victoria closes the gap, kissing him on the cheek, then wraps her arms around him fully. “You know that I’ll always be here.”

And Ryker smiles back, returning the embrace. And once more, it doesn’t feel quite so cold any longer.

Kaylan Racing Team HQ
Tushlark, Togonistan

Kaylan's WGP2 team had returned to their headquarters in Togonistan to start preparations for the first non-championship round in Kykipiflugpuu. For what was going to be a very unconventional race in freezing temperatures, the team based in the tropical island nation of Togonistan had rather low expectations. Still, Xander had gathered the team's core members together in a conference room to go over the plan:

''Okay, listen up! For the next round, we'll be travelling to Nykipiflugpuu. Be aware, the temperatures there will be below zero, so don't expect to be able to walk around in t-shirts like you're used to. We have ordered a batch of warm winter jackets solely for this occasion and they will be handed out to you all prior to our arrival. Hot tea and coffee will be available in our team area, as well as radiators installed into our motorhomes and team tents. It will be cold and nasty, but luckily, we only have to spend a few days there.'' Xander made a brief pause and looked at others. He could tell that some of his team members (except for the likes of Vladimir and Artyom who had actually seen snow in their life) already felt shivers going down their spines.

''The circuit is going to be like nothing we have ever seen in WGP2 before. Built on ice, grip levels almost non-existent. The whole track is surrounded by snow walls that can literally eat up whoever ends up crashing into them. With that in mind, we will go there with some major modifications on our cars. First, we have raised the floor quite marginally to stop that white mush they call snow clogging up beneath our cars. Secondly, we got rid of all of our latest wing upgrades and replaced them with older designs. These parts are largely scrap for us, so we won't feel sorry if you end up breaking any of them. And finally... the starting grid will be in reverse championship order, meaning we will start from the back of the grid. Keep in mind, it is pretty much going to be just a show event. Seeing WGP2 machinery race on snow an ice will be quite a spectacle to watch, but luckily, the WGPO had enough sense to rule this event out from being an actual championship race. Still... I think both Ted and Darian could use some pointers on how to handle the car out there. For that, I would like to introduce you Levi Afakasi. Two-time Togonistan Rallycross League champion!''

Levi, who had quietly been sitting at the back row so far, stood up and made his way to the front. ''Thanks for the intro, Xander,'' Levi laughed before facing the crowd and focusing his look on Ted and Darian. ''The upcoming weekend will be quite different from your usual circuit racing. Conventional racing lines will be blurry, if not non-existent and it will be slippery. To maintain speed through corners when the grip is low, rally and rallycross drivers use a technique called powersliding. That means letting your back end loose before entering the corner and playing with throttle through it. After the meeting, we will head out to our test track and I'll try to give you two a crash course about it. The boys have been using sprinklers to make the track wet, so we'll fit the slicks under the cars and try out some powersliding. It will be far from what the ice is like, but it's pretty much the only way we can somewhat simulate the conditions in Nykipiflugpuu. So, what do you say, let's have some fun, eh?''

Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Those were the words running around in Adonis Fitzpatrick's mind every time he watched a WGP2 race. He was supposed to be out there driving alongside other rising stars of motorsports. Instead, because of his own stupidity, he was forced to sit out every race so far and watch it from the confines of the paddock.

Vasily Gatutin and UrGa had been kind enough to offer Donny a place in the team as their test and reserve driver, and while he was able to spend time inside the car and the simulator, he was still nowhere near a place on the starting grid. While advances in technology had made simulators give their users an experienced very close to what it felt like to be in the real thing, it still just wasn't the real thing.

Being UrGa's reserve driver though did give Donny the opportunity to witness what appeared to be the decline of UrGa from a racing team into a mere collection of individuals now only loosely connected by a dampened passion for motorsports. Some of the crew muttered less than savory things about the new driver, Harry Zoomtwat, but truth be told, Donny didn't understand why they were pointing at him as the reason for their discord. Zoomtwat was eccentric, weird even, but he was a decent driver in Donny's opinion. Probably had to do with him being an accomplished pilot. Grand prix drivers were often called pilots too, probably because some of the earliest drivers in history were also pilots earlier in their careers. Sure, Zoomtwat might have ordered Donny to fetch him some spirits before his Indian batman reminded him that that wasn't why Donny was with the team.

Taras Matviyenko definitely changed though, but Donny didn't really notice it until some of the more recent races. Still, the signs had been there to see. Taras wasn't as cheerful or jovial to the others as he used to be, and he started spending more and more time alone, poring over race data to find areas where he thought he could improve himself even further. To be honest, Donny had never seen this side of Taras before, and it was kind of scaring him. If his determination was actually paying off, who knew just how formidable of a driver Taras Matviyenko could actually be?

The race weekend in Hapilopper was another horrid one for UrGa, as had been the case in recent times. People were definitely on edge now, and it seemed as if the slightest provocation would be enough to tip this whole mess over the edge. Donny Fitzpatrick wisely decided to keep out of everyone's way and stay in his part of the paddock and weather the storm there. Just as he had turned off the television and got ready to take a nap, Donny felt his phone vibrating. "Hello?" he asked as he picked up.

"Adonis? This is Vasily Gatutin," the voice at the other end replied. "Something's come up. Taras Gavrilovich has decided that he does not want to participate in any of the non-championship races. We need a driver to take his seat while he is away, and there isn't a lot of time to make offers. Would you like to take over Taras Gavrilovich's seat while he is away? I know it's just for the non-championship races, but it's still a chance for you to be on the grid this season. So, would you like to do it?"

Donny didn't even hesitate. "Of course, sir, I would love to drive for you for the next three races," Adonis Fitzpatrick told the Urotovsky-Gatutin Motorsports Division team principal.

What the Stats Tell Us About The Season So Far

Image
The Drivers' Championship standings. Bold indicates a start from pole, and italics indicates the scorer of the fastest lap, which nets the driver a point.

Image
The Constructors' Championship standings. Regardless of driver, the best result is displayed on top.

WITH the WGP2 season just crossing its midway point, and the circus heads to Xanneria for the second non-championship race of the season, we here at ChequeredFlag.net decided to trawl through the season statistics...just to find the most interesting factoids for your perusal. Do these stats mean anything? Almost certainly not. It's a long season, and there's still 235 points to fight for. With the top driver having scored just 87 points so far, it's still anyone's championship to fight for — so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for your favourite driver.

1 - That's the number of pole positions, regardless of in feature or sprint races, that have been converted to race wins. That honour goes to Nexus Racing's Janne Laukkanen, who converted his pole in Aboveland to a win, finishing 6 seconds ahead of Skiia Vialiv in second. Was it a home race boon? You'll have to ask the driver himself.

2 - In a chaotic season, only two teams have not suffered a retirement in an official championship race — those two teams, are, to nobody's surprise, the championship leaders Kaylan and the current runners-up TMW. With Heinz-Otto Junker's retirement in the Nykipiflugpuu race, that's technically just down to one team now, but for the sake of this article, we're only documenting championship races.

3 - Further highlighting how chaotic this season has been, only three drivers have won more than one race so far. Adriana Kowalski of Fireline was the first to achieve this mark, netting victories in Alikki-Corra and Drummond Vale's feature races; unfortunately, she's fallen off the pace, only scoring 5 points in the other 6 races since. Kaylan's duo of Ted Pressley and Anola Melani have won 4 races between them; Pressley's two have come in the rain-affected Stelburgring and Hapilpopper feature races, while Melani took hers in the Aboveland and Hapilpopper sprints, capping off an impressive weekend for the Togonistani outfit.

4 - The ignominy of suffering a double retirement has been had by four teams this season, three of which took place in the slippery Aboveland circuit. The four teams so far have been: EHF Motorsport in the Drummond Vale sprint; PrismRiver, VSK and Equipo Telebuenas-BA all suffered their double retirements at the vicious Aboveland circuit. Once again, if we added the recent Nykipiflugpuu race to the equation, no doubt this number would be higher.

5 - The big reason why Kaylan are leading the Constructors' Championship right now is because of this statistic. Half of the time, they've managed to get both cars into the points, an impressive feat considering how bunched up the field can be. Unsurprisingly, TMW comes second with 4 double points finishes, but what's more surprising is the fact that Urotovsky-Gatutin have four double points finishes as well, despite their intra-team rivalry becoming more and more heated up as the season goes on.

6.8 - Taking retirements as finishing in 28th, regardless of the order of the finish, we arrive at this statistic. This is Heinz-Otto Junker's average finishing position across the ten races so far. This consistency is why, despite not having taken a win yet, Junker's second in the championship. Ranking second is Anola Melani, with an average finish of 7.5; Ted Pressley, unsurprisingly, comes third with 8.2, his results having taken a beating thanks to the double 19th he scored at Drummond Vale.

17 - That's the number of drivers who've ascended to the podium at least once this season, highlighting how the name of the game for the second half of the season is consistency, and not winning. Interestingly, the driver lowest in the standings to have scored a podium is Batu Tüvshinbayar, who scored his at the Stelburgring; it remains his only points finish of the season so far.

8 - Piggybacking on the above stat, Junker has so far scored 8 points finishes, only failing to net points in the Aboveland feature race and the Hapilpopper feature race. We'd dare say, though, that the rest of his season has made up for it somewhat — though the Teus driver has to be chomping at the bit to ascend to the top step of the podium, having finished third three times. In second, we have Ted Pressley with 7 points finishes, while Anola Melani, Janne Laukkanen, Alex Marquez and Taras Matyvienko all share third with six points finishes each.

92% - We started this article with Laukkanen, and we're ending it with the mercurial yet enigmatic Aboveian driver, too; of teams who have had both drivers score points, Janne has scored 92% of his team's points so far. We're hoping his performances continue throughout the season — watching him wrestle the performance out of his car has been a sheer joy to watch, even if he has only been rewarded with one win for his efforts. What a win it was, though.

So there you have it. Those are the most interesting stats of the season we've managed to dig up so far. The WGP2 circus travels to Xanneria for its next non-championship race; the championship itself gets back underway in Diarcesia. We'll see you at the finish line!

Non-Championship Race
WGP2 Race of the Polestar
Iskohtirinkyy
Külmäkutitõmbuvadipallyyt, Nykipiflugpuu

"The first half didn't really go well, but these non-championship races provide an opportunity to try and improve yourself without much risk in terms of points" That was what Batu Tüvshinbayar told the media when asked about the non-championship races that act as a "mid-season break" for WGP2 Season 3. He knew that he had to try and button up his abilities in order to try and make the most out of the run-in, but on a track literally made of ice? That was certainly a difficult prospect. Couple that with the fact that this icy hell was actually in Nykipiflugpuu, the homeland of his team, then the pressure was certainly on to try and put his career back on track.

As it would turn out, hosting a 48-lap event on a track made of ice was going to cause a lot of retirements and that is exactly what happened here in the frozen tundra. Batu started 7th and ended up in 10th, which sounds bad, but considering only 14 drivers (about half the grid) even finished this race as a classified runner, it was an achievement that he even made it that far. 5 were gone by the time the only Saftey Car turned up on Lap 3 and another left before it left on Lap 6. After that, people kept on falling but teammate Lukas Fitcher was somehow the best guy out there as he took the flag by 40 seconds over the Kaylans of Darian Vilau and Ted Pressley. Batu was sure to give him a hug of congratulation after that performance, but he couldn't help feel a bit disappointed in himself. While he was a lap down, Fitcher is far ahead - a sum-up of this season so far at NN...

Post 19 – Coping Mechanism.

Image

"Well, it could not have been any worse," Adriana thought, looking at the scoreboard on her lounge's TV and perhaps doing a bit of a maniacal laugh. To date, this was perhaps the most disaster-filled race of her career in WGP2 4, bar that one race where half the drivers DNFed. Extremely dry and hot weather, her circuits trying their best to compensate for all the heat, and worst of all, some engine problems here and there on the car that has forced her to slow down and pit a little too frequently than she liked to for the entirety of the race. 22nd on the Sprint Race with a lap down, perhaps the course on Hapilopper was not as she cut it out to be.

She knew her team was trying their best, they really have been. For some reason, it was just not as going well as she used to back in the first two Feature Races. Wasn't she aggressive enough, or it was just bad luck? After reviewing footage after footage, Adriana chalked it down to bad luck for the race today. It was not a fun time for everyone, and perhaps even the crew of Fireline know about it. At the very least, she was happy that her teammate was able to net 6 points from this race, compensating for the recent races where she was getting few to no points.

The debrief went on normally, though there certainly was a tension or two building up. Adriana knew she was trying her best, and her team probably knows it. For some odd reason that is beyond their control, the mechanical problems and the course just weren't having it specifically for her. "Still, there are more technical tracks coming in, and I'm hoping that these non-championship races will help me out," she said to the team, to which a few of them, including Jane, have been taking down notes, "So far, actually I don't really have much of a problem with the car. I know it sort of slowed down and was not doing too well, but I just think it was because of the hot weather today. I know I was heating up a little myself!"

Her wants and needs were answered in the form of the Iskohtirinkyy Circuit for the very first non-championship race. Doable track, not a lot of challenging turns, and the best of all - it's cold! Adriana looked at the drivers and the teams around her donning several layers of thick clothing, gloves, and earmuffs, whilst she was still wearing her usual outfit consisting of a white blouse and black track pants. The cold didn't even bother her, and in fact would let her computer circuits perform better.

At least, that was the plan. The race itself has been uneventful for Adriana, finishing at a 9th. Knowing about the frictional coefficient of snow, Adriana made several and severe adjustments to her parameters and equations as to the most optimal paths that she could drive and maneuver in. She found out that the lack of turns have been balanced by the icy conditions, at times her car even trying to drift a little bit. "If 9th was the middle, this must have been worse than I thought," she wondered curiously to herself on what has been happening. The answer came in the form of the 38th lap whereby her teammate retired, possibly due to the ice. The radio chatter has been rather chaotic in the background - while Percy stayed with Adriana, she could hear all the exclamations and concerns in the background with regards to Astigar. It was just like that time, except that Adriana was not part of the list of drivers that has DNFed. Inquiry via her radio indicated that as many as 14 drivers have retired and lost to the icy conditions of the track. Annalise was down by 6 laps, to which Adriana felt quite the pity for her. Still, non-championship race, so this was perhaps just a learning point for many as long as they were not injured from the race.

As Adriana got out from her car to let her team evaluate it after the race, she slowly walked over to the scoreboard, perhaps ignoring the looks that she was getting from the people around her - some of them amazed at her height, and others showing a concern for her lack of susceptibility towards the cold. "Adriana, are you sure you are not malfunctioning from the cold?" would be the one she most commonly got. "Oh nah, I am fine, don't worry about it! I like the cold anyway, haha! It helps with my circuitry!" Shifting her attention back to the board, she realised that there were quite a handful of people and running theme she was seeing. Ted Pressley, for one. Starting off rather slow at the beginning, he himself has won two races, alongside getting points from the smaller victories. It was simply not about winning the race, but rather from getting the points as well. It sounded obvious when she thought about it, but Adriana didn't give it much of a thought until now. "So hey, maybe I will just try my best to get more points. Winning is... not exactly that much of a primary task for me, anyway."

She looked at the scoreboard a little bit longer, and she realised that someone didn't appear for this race. Someone in particular from Kaylan Racing Team. Anola Melani, another rising star who is quickly picking up her pace. She was presumably replaced by Darian Vilau, at least for this race. Giving a shrug to herself, she walked slowly back into the garage and listened to the debrief, again with nothing too special to say regarding the cars. They did their job, and that was that. It was only in the lounge that Adriana opened up to Jane about her concerns and woes. "Ever since those two consecutive Feature Races, I feel like I have been dropping on almost every race. I wonder what is happening, or that I have always been this polarizing."

"It does seem like you either perform the very best, or no offense, lukewarm. I didn't mean any offense, again. I do share the sentiment that you definitely have more potential to get extra points, even if you don't finish on the podium."

"Well, here's to hoping for the second half of the season. Maybe they are the tracks that I can do slightly better in!"

"Yeah, don't worry about it. You did pretty decently for today, too! Remember that the whole course was slippery and you didn't DNF this time, so there is that," Jane paused for a small sip of water moving on, "Now then, if you are fine with it, perhaps we can talk a little more about the next race. After all, non-championship doesn't have two races per course, we should practice on the next one."

In his life, Jordan Crowe had never experienced a race meeting quite like the one he had just taken part in.

This track--the Iskohtirinkyy Circuit in far away from everywhere Nykipiflugpuu--was best suited for the snowmobile racing that he'd seen on TV once or twice growing up. A surface of solid ice, with snowbanks surrounding the course, making every corner a blind entry with absolutely no contrast to judge distance.
That didn't even take the car into consideration: maximum ride height, maximum downforce--which seemed counterintuitive to the need for four wheel drift--full wet weather tires crudely fitted with snow chains; it was madness from beginning to end.

Jordan and Sakite brooded, bitched and bickered with everyone about the entire exercise. They'd spent most of the flight to Nykipiflugpuu engaged in long conversations that ranged from racecraft to light-hearted storytelling. Concerned discussion about Pedro's state of mind took up a part of the exchange as well; both of them realized & accepted that he was the de facto 'number one' on merit and Saki admitted that she wanted to have a better understanding with her teammate away from the track.

The race itself was frivolous waste of time in Jordan's thinking as he waited for everything to be packed up and loaded on the hauler; he'd been lucky to avoid trouble and came home seventh as only the top five runners at the end finished on the lead lap. Saki had gone out in a tangle with Lille that brought out the safety car on lap 3, Jordan inquiring after her as he came through the scene under yellow.
"Is she alright?" "Affirmative Jordan, she's fine. Not her fault, she had nowhere to go".

Meanwhile, back in Haskins at the factory, very little was going right in the attempt to improve the car; Ed O'Malley's idea to try lengthening the wheelbase by extending the gearbox housing was proving to be nearly impossible in the time frame that the midseason break offered. There was no quick fix that would help provide more stability in higher gear bends and corners. Every potential solution created a further problem somewhere else, and that reality gnawed at Ed, creating self-doubt that he could do anything to make the car even moderately better.

He wrote out a note for Mike Lambert, but when he'd finished, he took the pad and put it into his desk drawer, and went home. His resignation letter would go undelivered.

Lack of Sierran Commitment Holding Back Montagne GP

Hapilopper City Grand Prix Circuit, Hapilopper City, Happilopper :: While the new look Vilaye EnergySport Montagne Grand Prix team got off to a fast start during the fourth World Grand Prix 2 Campaign, the beginners luck has seemed to melt away for the combined Vilita & Turori - Sierra Grand outfit who have failed to post a Top 10 finish in the previous 5 events.

After putting a driver in the Top 4 for six of the first seven races including three podium finishes, it all starting to go south for Vilaye EnergySport when Skiia Vialiv suffered the teams first retirement of the season at the Stelburgring in Siovanija and Teusland. The team could not rebound in the Teus Sprint with their combined worst performance of the season - finishing 17th and 21st respectively before an absolutely miserable outing in Hapilopper that would become the first race weekend of the season that Vilaye EnergyDrink failed to score a single point.

As a result, rookie driver Skiia Vialiv who had been leading the World Grand Prix 2 Driver's standings has now fallen to 6th place over 30 points behind the new leader Ted Pressley of Kaylan Racing Team. Kaylan have also opened up a sizeable lead in the Constructors standings having won four of the previous five points races while Vilaye EnergySport Montagne GP have fallen back to the fourth position overall.

As questions have emerged as to what has been the cause of the recent struggles for the Vilaye EnergySport team, some rumors out of Sierra Grand have been suggesting that Sierran company Little Lamb Steel has been witholding payment for its sponsorship. Having entered the season as a primary sponsor on the Montagne GP team, Little Lamb have been featured as a co-primary on the Vialiv and Pegasii machines sharing the spotlight with primary financer the Vilisorma Beverage Company. While no comment could be coerced out of representatives from either the Vilisorma Beverage Company nor the Little Lamb Steel Corporation, one source close to the team familiar with the situation has revealed that Vilaye EnergySport Montagne GP have been in talks with the Little Lamb Steel Corporation to put local Sierran driver Jerome Mariot into the drivers seat in place of the Veteran Jama'obo Pegasii for one of the remaining non-championship races in Xanneria or the Licentian Isles.

While it may seem like a straightforward marketing arrangement to ensure that the Little Lamb Steel Corporation gets its advertising value by associating its brand on track with a home-nation driver to market in local media, the rumored arrangements could get a little more serious if a deal is not reached. It is believed that if No agreement can be reached to secure the funding commitments of the Little Lamb Steel Corporation before the points racing resumes at the Elbej Historic Site Circuit then Vilaye EnergySport Montagne GP could pull the plug on the Little Lamb Steel partnership and show up at the track with a car completely devoid of Sierra Grand based sponsors. Of course, as the mid-season break continues for the World Grand Prix 2 circuit continues, anything can still happen before seasons end.

Bearden Waterfront Circuit, Bearden, Xanneria
Bearden Feature Race, Practice; 8th of May

The mood in the Nexus Racing garage is, to put it mildly, tense.

Gertrude leans over her microphone, hands rising up to form a platform for her chin; Lucia sits beside her, expression emotionless as she divides her attention between the dozens of graphics on the screen ahead of her. She looks back to Gertrude, affirming that nobody else is on the track right now. They have their window of opportunity.

Alright. Here we go.

She looks up to the feed of Haru Jukkenna’s car, then glances across to his race engineer. Valen Song waits patiently, tapping at the console in front of him. Gertrude feels a twinge of sympathy tug at her. Valen had built a bond with Rebecca Darlington, the team’s WGP2 driver in the competition’s first and second seasons, his energy and enthusiasm playing well to her own temperament; her departure at the end of WGP2 II had seen much of it just sap away. She couldn’t help but wonder how much that was responsible for Drake Stevenson’s, and now Haru Jukkenna’s, performances. Why the rest of the world doesn’t follow the driver-engineer pair model like the Wardship does, I’ll never know… Glad that Janne and Antti are an exception.

Anyway. Haru’s best placed for this race; he gets to know whatever gremlins are in his car first.

Gertrude gives a nod to Valen, then to Lucia. “If everything’s good, let’s deactivate now.”

Valen nods, then turns to his own microphone to relay the message; Lucia, meanwhile, performs one last scan of the screen in front of her, then, locking her jaw ever so slightly, selects something.

A warning pops up. She taps it again to confirm. And with that, the Imagikinetic Structural Integrity Sustenance Unit for the number 18 Chase Cutter depowers.

On the feed of the onboard, the cerulean light shining from Haru’s UHSGV-5 fades, just slightly.

Gertrude’s eyes widen. That… That should not be a visible change. That’s too much.

“Gertrude.” Lucia’s voice cuts through her thought; she turns towards her, where she points towards a cluster of data points. “A problem in the rear motor; power is fluctuating every half-second, approximately. We should –”

She blinks – then stares at something else before her gaze shifts upwards, not to the camera feed but to the main broadcast.

“Gertrude!” Valen. “Haru’s reporting a loss of downforce…” He trails off, eyes also looking to the video, where Haru’s Chase Cutter is rounding a corner at a much slower pace than he should be.

That does make sense, considering that large chunks of the side pod are stuck out at bizarre angles, far more than the MARS should allow them to be reconfigured to adjust the flow of air over the car.

Gertrude looks back to Lucia – and sees an expression of horror on the woman’s face, one that she has never seen the like of before. And she considers the following: that while Nexus Racing have always performed numerous checks to ensure that the ISISU is compatible with elements of the car introduced over the course of the season, they have rarely, if ever, tested aged parts, transferred from race to race, without the ISISU’s effects applied.

And that here, at this non-championship race, they are running significantly aged parts.

Degrading efficiency that the ISISU was completely covering up. Of course. “Maelstrom. Maelstrom.” Gertrude clenches one hand into a fist, then slams it into the palm of the other. “Get Haru in now so we can fix that, Valen.” She lets out a terse sigh, then looks up to Lucia – wonderful, dependable Lucia, who is even now patching herself through to members of the design team to schedule a general conclave – and her will, furious in its hope, reforms.

Just a setback.

One that we
will overcome.

Emmet: You might see a mess -
Lord Business: Exactly: a bunch of weird, dorky stuff that ruined my perfectly good stuff!
Emmet: Okay. What I see are people, inspired by each other and by you - people taking what you made and making something new out of it.

WGP2 Race of the Polestar
Lap 30

The data comes in.

Aldauren Ginintella blurts out "Nice" to the team: a total of 69 interesting data points comes out of Laura's car so far.

"Ready to go, guys..."

Chief engineer Louis Meissner seems to have a problem focusing on the screen, but he starts to audibly talk about some ideas.

"Well... I guess that would be a start..." Louis says.

He and Aldauren get up, and begin to stretch their arms.

Louis continues what he is saying. "I'm very pleased that our PF-1s are holding well in the snow! Even more impressive is how quick Indra is learning Laura's tricks in driving in such novel surfaces."

"This is it. The day when the A-Team finally wins a race at an international level. I mean, we're finally a race winner in this tournament! We've had some mechanical gremlins that we've been fighting to get used to, but we've done well. Our engine is powerful enough to outspeed NEC's latest car. We've had some bad luck in the season, given we've been second only to last in the championship. We've had a few breaks, but today we've been solid."

"Our car is still pretty fresh," says Cratip.

"Yeah," Aldauren replies.

"Congratulations, Aldauren. Come, take us out in the open," Cratip requests.

"Where do you want to go? I'm sure you got your weekend planned out. Maybe we'll have a few drinks and play some cards, but anything's fine with me. Perhaps we can talk about some stuff," Aldauren answers. He and Cratip get into the roadster.

"I'll talk to Roland," Cratip says once he gets settled on the passenger seat.

"So," says Aldauren, as their car gathers speed along the street. "What do you think of Roland's outfit?" he asks. "Do you like it, or do you not... didn't like it?"

"I don't know. I don't really care for it. He is fashionably late, for one, though, which is really annoying. Look, he's a nice man, but... I don't know, he's too much of a pushover. Yeah, I hate that part of him, but pleasant stuff happens when you witness his cool professionalism."

"To be honest, I haven't known Roland much, Cratip," Aldaugen sighs.

"I'm sorry you don't know him," Cratip continues, beginning to wipe off his glasses. "I don't mean to talk about him assuming you're his close friend. I'm sure you are also very nice, and I do appreciate the gesture. Better late than later; I'd arrange an introduction."

"I'll be honored, that's all." He looks at the intersection ahead and frowns. "Well... we are introduced to a traffic jam right now."

"I see. I'm sure you're used to it," Cratip smiles. "Are the ladies giving you trouble? You know, getting compliments on your appearance, as well as being recognised in the amazing car you're in. Certainly more than a few even asked you out."

"I'm familiar with the experience, and I... there's nothing, really. It's not like I haven't had other men try to get me interested in their cars, or wanting to try my luck with the finer things in life. I imagine it would be a pleasurable experience, actually. I do wish I had more time, but I can't really be everywhere at once. I suppose it's my fault of me being a very vubsy elf."

The two exchange glances for a second and grins.

"We've had a few failures along the way, Aldauren. I think we can try something new. Try it, and if it works, I'll add more to your hard-earned salary."

"That sounds mighty dangerous, Cratip."

"It's part of the profession. You'll like it."

"I can't say I'm disappointed. It's something I've wanted to do for quite some time, despite the risk. I do hope you know that it will not be the death of me. But for now, I do like to know more about your idea."

Present Day
PB Headquarters, The Laboratory
Pryfurium, Dieresis of Chiyginia
Diarcesia

Dr. Teak stands before a large laboratory, a large, flat, well-lit room. It is a formal environment, designed with several levels of security in mind, with hallways clinically pristine and spacious floor space. An open door leads to a small presentation area, which is open to the public. A number of professors and staff members sit around a conference table, and a few students fill the rest of the open spots.

"Hi everyone," Dr. Teak says after he arrives. He prepares his materials for his presentation shortly. Once he is done, Dr. Teak introduces the discussion, and then himself.

"And on the next slide, this is my new pet." He points to the screen. "Yes, it's a dromedary from the northern Diarcesian desert. There are two variants: the standard, basic dromedary, and the more exotic dromedary. Mine's a standard one."

He looks at the table, where a few students looked in awe over an unusual pet. "How I came across him is a rather unusual story! Maybe too long to discuss here, I'm afraid," Dr. Teak says. "And, as a side note, camels can be fast animals, which is a good segue to our topic for today."

Dr. Teak sits down on one of the study chairs, begins his lecture. "Now, I know a lot of you are working late, and I can sympathise with you all. Aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, and the like, they're very complex subjects. I will do my best to explain how we at PB incorporate these concepts in our cars, whether it's for the regular motorists or for racing. In this field, a minuscule change in drag coefficient can spell the difference between paying much for fuel or losing that crucial championship-clinching event.

As the car moves through the air, it compresses and slows the air in front of it, creating an area of higher air pressure. In a WGPC car, an endplate stops the high-pressure air on the top of the wing from rolling over the wing to the low-pressure air beneath, causing an induced drag, and thus help prevent the car from becoming an aeroplane."

CUTOFF
for the Middlebrook Grand Prix at Bearden Waterfront - Non-championship Race at Bearden Waterfront Circuit

I interpret Vilita & Turori's RP to mean Jerome Mariot will race for only one non-championship race; in this scenario it will be the final one. No further mid-season temporary replacements will be entertained.

Home.

As the WGP2 circus left Hapilpopper behind, marking the end of the Atlantian Oceanian leg of the calendar, there was a distinct uptick in the mood, a spring in Ted Pressley's step, a sense of anticipation. He'd been feeling this way since the circus descended onto Xanneria — an Esportivan nation, sure, but so far away from the rest of the tight-knit region geographically that it didn't feel like it counted, but now he could almost taste it.

The Licentian Isles. Just a short way from home. It just felt like it, too, though he wasn't exactly there. The overwhelming sense of familiarity, the sense of community...he felt like he could sink into it. And relax, for he was amongst friends.

This would be a home race for several Esportivan racers. Local hero Wingelaar, the Filindo Gozum and his Ethanian teammate Rousseau, the Lisanderians Devereux and Lille, and of course, himself were getting as close to home as it got with this race, and Ted, of all of them, wanted to impress the travelling crowd. There'd be one more race in Esportiva, in Nekoni, but the attention this particular race was getting was palpable. Perhaps it was because of the Islands' recent return to international competition, perhaps it was more because the Licentian Isles were in the middle of Esportiva; either way, the crowd size was immense, especially the one from Tumbra.

Especially after they'd basically bought an entire stand's tickets to themselves and covered it in all sorts of Kaylan memorabilia, and of course, the colours of the Tumbran flag. Throughout the week he'd been doing events with the fans, signing endless autographs and replica helmets, t-shirts and model T170s...it was a lot. But tiring? Not a bit. The support he was getting lifted his feelings. Just a few months ago, he was a nobody — struggling to find a team to drive for, close to asking a team for a reserve driver slot. Two wins and seven points finishes later, he was atop the standings, ready to grab to reins of destiny as he began riding into the second half of the season.

And the pace was there. It wasn't a fluke. He and Darian Vilau had swept the non-championship races so far. The Nykipiflugpuu race was a bit of an oddity, as both of them struggled to get to grips with the snow-covered surfaces — in the end, however, Kaylan recorded a double podium, coming from 25th and 26th on the grid. A brief struggle with a snowbank had given Vilau the second place, but he'd taken it in his stride — after all, the two had struck up a fast friendship, and Vilau had given him tips on how to handle the car on more technical tracks, which would be crucial towards the second half of the season.

That help came in handy in Xanneria, where he started third but had another rocket start to take the lead at the first right-hander; it was a lead he wouldn't relinquish. Vilau came second in an action-packed race marred with various incidents on the tight, twisty circuit — but they'd held their nerves to deliver a 1-2 finish for the Togonistani outfit. Any doubts over whether Kaylan's pace in the earlier few races were a fluke had dissipated; the race in Aboveland began the trend, and the one in Xanneria semi-confirmed it. They were the team to beat, whether they liked it or not.

And now, in the Licentian Isles, he was on pole.

Anola was back — her elbow had probably recovered sufficiently, though he hadn't had much time to talk to her, between his packed schedule and her re-acclimatisation to the car — and he was looking forward to racing with her again. He'd be sorry to see Vilau go, but having Anola back was better. By now, they knew each other's driving styles, and knew best how to help each other on track. He, personally, was just hoping that their relationship wouldn't be placed under too much strain if they found themselves fighting for the title — and hoped she felt the same way too.

As he sat with Simon in the garage, going through how best to approach the twisty middle sector before the start of the practice session, a nice surprise was awaiting him. Led in by a smiling Xander, Ted's parents — Charlie and Mavis — had turned up. To Simon's chagrin, he dropped everything and immediately went in to embrace both his parents in turn. It'd been a long time since he'd seen them in the flesh — they'd kept in touch through the usual channels, but after a few months away, seeing them was possibly the best thing he could've gotten.

He showed them around the garage, taking care not to interrupt Anola, and Charlie Pressley smiled when he saw the T170, an approving gaze as he brushed his fingers over the car. "A marvel of engineering", he remarked, "certainly fit to carry someone to a title."

His gaze went to Anola, then back to him.

"Make sure it's you", he muttered in a lower, yet noticeably harsher tone.
"Dad!" A quick flash of anger appeared in Ted's eyes. Immediately he led Charlie to a more quiet place, while asking Simon to continue showing Mavis around the garage. Once he was sure that nobody would be listening in on him, Ted began. He didn't know what he wanted to say, nor did he want to lay into his father — but he just felt like he had to say something.

"I don't know what you want, Dad, but please. We've got a remarkable team mood around the place now...and...well...I don't want the title to get into any of this."
"All I'm doing is the best for you."
"No, Dad, no. I don't want this. This isn't the best."
"Think, Ted!" His voice rose. "You two are in race-winning, no, championship-winning machines. One of you is going to get to the top step of the podium at the end of the season. I don't give a damn who wins, so long as it's you. Alright?"
"I'm here to drive. Winning is secondary."
"Then why race?"

It was a question he couldn't conjure an answer for. As he stood there, mouth half-open, trying to find an answer. Anything, anything!. But try as he might, he still couldn't find one. Defeated, he closed his eyes, looked askance, and without a word, invited Charlie back to the garage to continue the tour.

"I knew you'd come round." A small smile crept onto his lips.
"I've not come round to anything. You'll change your mind once you meet Anola and the rest of the team. They are some of the kindest, best people I've ever met — and they come first. Whatever happens."
"It'll be your loss."
"I don't care."

Ted introduced his parents to Anola, before wrapping up the tour — they'd be staying around for the race, of course, but near the end of it, Ted felt a tumult of emotions. His dad, his own father who'd introduced him to racing, shaped him into the man he was today — was he the same man who'd just told him to ignore the team and go hell for leather for the championship? Who was he? Who had he turned into?

He'd have to keep those emotions to the back of his mind as he prepared for the race — but slowly, he'd begun to realise he wouldn't be winning for his father anymore.

He'd be winning for himself, now.
