Welcome to Chromatika
Overview: Chromatika is a nation composing of a group of islands located in the far northeastern corner of Atlantian Oceania. There is the main island of Chromatik Island itself, Urrhed Island to the southwest, Myana Island to the northwest, and the Wilderness Preserve of Dorri Island to the northeast.
Chromatika one day popped into existence by mysterious forces that have since been identified as a group of extraplanar angels known as The Enlightened Ones. It's still unclear where the populace came from. The Chromatik Party held sway over the land, implementing its seven-color caste system, until the Rainbow Revolution happened, led by the Chromatik National Team in World Cup 75. This resulted in the first Manager of Chromatika - Franscesca Larriet-Cortes - being martyred.
A group of revolutionaries called the Shadow Writers were able to gather elements of the Chromatik Army, Air Force, and Navy to overthrow the Chromatik Party. Alina Krasnikova, one of the leaders of this movement, was the first Premier. Chromatika then ran into another hiccup when the time of the first democratic election came, with the Checkers Party, formed by a lot of the remnants of the Chromatik Party, tried to take control of the election. Aided by one of the Enlightened Ones, the Rainbow Party was able to, with help with their Atlantian Oceanian neighbors, stop the forces behind the Checkers Party and ensure a safe election.
Cultural Notes: While visiting Chromatika, please observe the following:
Transportation: Chromatik highways aren't very wide - two lanes per side at most. There is a very expansive railroad system that was originally used for troop movement, but is has been refitted to serve the everyday citizen. A subway system and a bus system in the bigger cities have also been established. The National Airport is also not very big, only serving regional flights. For the tournament, the nation will be accepting team planes to land, but it'd be best if you flew to Quebec City, Istria, Jhanna, or Cathair first. Ferries run from the Islands of Myana and Urrhed to the main island on the hour.
Currency: The currency of Chromatika is the National Mark. the exchange rate is at a respectful 2.5 Chromatik National Mark per 1 NS Dollar. Cost of living is rather low in Chromatika, as the government provides most things through taxes. A bottle of water costs 1 NMS, a good meal about 7, and a new car around 24,000. Please come to Chromatika with all your currency changed to NSD. We don't provide exchange services from other currencies.
Climate: Chromatika is a rather cold nation, with the average temperature being 65 F in the summer and down to 11 F in the winter. The northern parts tend to be colder, while Myana and Urrhed tend to be a bit warmer. There is a temperate jungle in Eyrods where the temperature can spike up a bit more. It doesn't rain much, but snows a fair bit; winds don't gust that much, either. Climate-wise, it's a rather cold, boring, land. The knockout rounds of the World Bowl are taking part in Chromatik June, meaning it shouldn't be downright hostile cold but still rather cool.
Language: The official languages of Chromatika are English, Korean, French, Mandarin, and Russian. The most commonly used one in English. Depending on where you visit, you can hear one of the other being spoken interchangeably. Most Chromatik peoples know at least three of the five languages, with one of them being English. Pockets of other language speakers do exist, but are more rare.
Cuisine: Chromatik food is usually spicy, filling, and served warm. There are a few cold dishes, but as the country itself is very cool/cold, Chromatiks prefer hot dishes. Korean, French, Chinese, and Eastern Europeans are all available for consumption.
Gridiron: Gridiron Football is played in the cities of Staramara, Qet, Alnio, Deprí Lanar, Deprí Sanar, Chromia, Brisara, and Knetyohai. There is also College Football in Myana, Z'ai'ai, Deprí Lanar, Deprí Sanar, Chromia, Felswyr, and Staramara. It's a growing sport!
General Populace: The Chromatik people are respectful, polite, and usually keep to themselves. If you don't bug them, they won't bug you. That isn't to say that they aren't nice, as Chromatiks get by with most everyone. Just don't make fun of the past, don't make light the actions of the Chromatik Party, and enjoy your visit!
Note: You'll often recognize that the Capacity of a venue and the Seats are different. That's because traditionally, Chromatik stadiums were also the place that people would go to in case of evacuation due to natural disasters. The Capacity is the number of people that can fit in the stadium comfortably; the number of seats is the number of actual seats that are available to view the football games. For the ones where seats aren't listed, Capacity indicates number of seats.Round of Sixteen: Heartland DistrictPùrPùr is the biggest city in the Heartlands, and the capital of the district. This is where most of Chromatika's farmland is located. It is from this district that the nation generates most of its domestic grains and livestock. Without Pùr, Chromatika would either starve or go even further into foreign debt.
Venue: Riders' Arena (Cap. 35,210)
A small arena for a tight-knit bunch of fans. It's not a flashy stadium, but one that gets its job done, and a place that all Pùrites know about.
Residents:
Pùr (Rainbow League System Orange League, Football)
ScheduleR1: Cassadaigua vs. Abanhfleft
Anfanhar Anfanhar is known mostly for one thing: the country's only amusement park to date. AnfanWorld is an entity of much contention among the Chromatik populace as Anfanhar has passed quite a few laws to lower taxes being paid by the company just to keep it around. It's turned this town into a tourist town and given it much life.
Venue: Dragon's Nest (Cap. 48,210)
Having the appearance of a literal nest, Dragon's Nest is a feat of engineering. It overlooks the tallest roller-coaster of AnfanWorld, and the parkgoers' happy screams can be heard even from within the stadium.
Residents:
Anfanhar (Rainbow League System Yellow League, Football)
Schedule:R2: Ko-oren vs. Anthor
Round of Sixteen: Deprí DistrictDeprí LanarLocated at the Western side of the Deprí district, Lanar was founded first, and is the older brother. Deprí Lanar is known for producing most of the nation's vehicles. Viper Motors (previously Imhar Automotive) is located there, being the only automotive maker of Chromatika. Being by the coast means a lot of foreign cars come through here as well. They're rabid about their Hawks, and used to underachieving as a team, but passionate nonetheless.
Venue: Hawks' Nest (Cap. 112,000, 38,000 Seats)
The home of the Red Hawks, the Hawks' Nest was made to resemble a bird's nest with the field being where the eggs would lie in a bird's nest. The sloping roof does bounce back sound onto the field making it one of the loudest venues in Chromatika.
Residents:
Deprí Lanar (Rainbow League System Orange League, Football)
Deprí Lanar Turtles (Chromatik Football League, Gridiron Football)
ScheduleR3: TJUN-ia vs. Karditan
Deprí SanarThe younger brother, Deprí Sanar is known for two things. First, it's where Z'ai'ai's lumber ends up to be turned into furniture. Second, it's where the headquarters of the Death Templars Law Firm is located. DTLF was the sponsor of the Chromatik League for many years and one of the biggest companies in Chromatika, helping now only settle law cases but also fund a lot of philanthropic efforts to aid the poor.
Venue: The Hive (Cap. 122,000, 42,000 Seats)
Don't go to The Hive unless you don't mind being a bit squished. It's the densest stadium, and was specifically designed that way to emulate a hive and how full it is of bees. The field is the most open part of the entire stadium, but the absence of a roof means you're at the mercy of the elements.
Residents:
Deprí Sanar (Rainbow League System Orange League, Football)
Deprí Sanar Battalion (Chromatik Football League, Gridiron)
ScheduleR4: Newmanistan vs. Saint Kanye
Round of Sixteen: Coastal DistrictPriaPria is at the northeastern coast of Chromatika, and is where the ferry to the Island of Dorri is located. Dorri is a wildlife preserve that doesn't have any cities, just an observatory for scientists. Besides being a research town, Pria also does some fishing and watersports. It is the surfing capital of Chromatika, as waves can get pretty high with a favorable wind, leading to ideal surfing conditions.
Venue: The Pack (Cap. 67,290, 19,000 Seats)
The home venue for the Pria Pride, The Pack is one of the oldest stadiums in Chromatika. Its architecture has a nostalgic feel of a bygone age. There have been numerous attempts for Prians to open a new stadium, but the fans have shot it down time and time again, claiming that their stadium does just fine. It is rather distinct from the rest, a glimpse into Chromatika's past.
Residents:
Pria (Rainbow League System Orange League, Football)
ScheduleR5: Allamunnic States vs. Delaclava
LhorLocated in the northeast corner of Chromatika, right by the ocean, Lhor was historically a whaling town, and now a place that is famous for its whalewatching tours. Otherwise, Lhor is famous for being the fashion Capital of Chromatika - although most of the modeling still happens in Chromatik City. A lot of young people live in Lhor because it's a small yet fashionable town.
Venue: The Cove (Cap. 51,265; 28,000 Seats)
What's not to like about this stadium? Located right by the ocean, with an aquarium across the street. Beautiful view of the ocean and the sunset. The focus of the town, the jewel of the city... It's a pretty place to be.
Residents:
Lhor (Rainbow League System Red League, Football)
ScheduleR6: Banija vs. Sarzonia
Round of Sixteen: Mountain DistrictFelswyrA town known for its ski resorts, a winter paradise. Felswyr is located about dead center of the Mountain District, right by Mt. Niai. It is known for tourism and for being the winter Capital of Chromatika. It is also where Felswyr State University is located.
Venue: Frozen Stadium (Cap. 32,100)
This stadium is mostly known for being 6,112 ft above sea level. The air is thin and cold, and wind chill can also be a factor. Thankfully, the tournament is being held in the summer, so temperatures should be a bit more mild.
Residents:
Felswyr (Rainbow League System Red League, Football)
ScheduleR7: Royal Kingdom of Quebec vs. Drawkland
Z'ai'aiLocated at the Southeast corner of Chromatika, Z'ai'ai is seated by Mt. Kùrn, the highest point in Chromatika, with elevation of 17,254 ft. It is a rare place where you can experience the mountain and the ocean at the same time within an hour's drive. Pronounced 'Zee-aye-aye", it's also the cuisine capital of Chromatika due to the variety of ingredients that are available from both the mountains and the ocean. A lot of mining is done at Mt. Kùrn, and logging is also done on a sustainable level and sent to Deprí Sanar to be turned into furniture.
Venue: Z'ai'ai Field (Cap. 113,000, 40,000 Seats)
The home of the Mountaineers, and an iconic stadium that boasts the view of the ocean and of the mountain on a clear day. The pride of Z'ai'ai, and a beautiful sight.
Residents:
Z'ai'ai (Rainbow League System Red League, Football)
ScheduleR8: Ranoria vs. Squidroidia
Quarterfinals: Urrhed IslandUrrheddiaoLocated at the southernmost point of Urrhed, Urrheddiao is the seafood capital of Chromatika. It is here that most of the fishing fleets call home, and over 85% of the nation's fish is caught here. The football culture is great here as well, as United started in the second tier and worked its way up to be one of the greatest teams within the nation before the league was disbanded. The fans are quite loyal here, and the rivalry with fellow Islanders Myana is something to watch.
Venue: United Center (Cap. 120,000; 28,000 Seats)
Initially, United owners wanted the stadium to be right by the water. However, safety concerns over the huge tidal waves in the winter forced the stadium to be about fifteen miles off the coast. The stadium can be transformed into a place where a lot of the city can take shelter in in the event of a tsunami or a typhoon, as it sits at the highest point on the island.
Residents:
Urrheddiao (Rainbow League System Red League, Football)
ScheduleQ1: R1 Winner vs. R2 Winner
TihonLocated on the northern half of Urrhed Island, Tihon is another fishing town, like Urrheddiao and Myana. It is also a tourist attraction due to the huge open beaches in the area.
Venue: The Tidal Wave (Cap. 95,210; 25,000 Seats)
The focal point of the town, is built on the high end of the island as to provide shelter against storms.
Residents:
Tihon (Rainbow League System Red League, Football)
ScheduleQ2: R3 Winner vs. R4 Winner
Quarterfinals: Myana IslandMyanaBiggest port city in Chromatika. Second biggest city in Chromatika. Naval headquarters of Chromatika. Second biggest fishing town of Chromatika. Tourist attraction.
Venue: Island Dome (Cap. 133,000; 35,000 Seats)
The Island Dome is located five miles from downtown Myana, towards the interior of the Island. It is in the shape of a boat to commemorate the naval forces, and there is a cannon that goes off every time the Islanders score a goal at home.
Residents:
Myana (Rainbow League System Red League, Football)
ScheduleQ3: R5 Winner vs. R6 Winner
EyrodsOne of the unexplained phenomenon of Chromatika is the climate of Eyrods, located on Myana Island. The Eastern half of Myana Island is a temperate jungle, teeming with wildlife and milder weather. Nobody is quite sure of why this is, but that is why Eyrods is the zoological capital of Chromatika. Eyrodi are appreciative of wildlife and have learned to coexist with it. The city itself is at the Coast, while the Jungle lies at the southern end.
Venue: The Jungle (Cap. 74,590, 26,000 Seats)
The greenest stadium in Chromatika, and we're not just talking about the color scheme. The stadium is made of recyclable matter - seats made of reused plastic, etc. It's a marvel of engineering and architecture, and it's not unusual to have birds fly over the stadium often. Don't worry - there's a clear roof that usually goes over it to protect you from anything that might fall from them.
Residents:
Eyrods (Rainbow League System Red League, Football)
Schedule:Q4: R7 Winner vs. R8 Winner
Semifinal/Final: Capital DistrictAlnioAlnio is the technological capital of Chromatika, although it's right next to Chromatik City. Located just thirty-one miles East of Chromatik City, almost dead center of the Capital District, it is in Alnio that Black Raven Technologies is located. Alnio has lots of blue collar workers and used to be completely populated by Greens on the Chromatik Scale. Now, the city is busy with a lot of Red, Orange, and Yellow people being educated, along with some of the Blue, Indigo, and Violets who wanted to be scientists there to learn as well.
Venue: RCK Field (Cap. 100,400, 32,000 Seats)
RCK Field is a stereotypical football field in a nice stadium. The stadium surrounding the field has shopping malls built in it, and there is a huge food court as well. The Union make the field their home, and it was here that Alora Heher, Cosumarite, plied her trade before the exile of all foreign players.
Residents:
Alnio (Rainbow League System Red League, Football)
Alnio Pirates (Chromatik Football League, Gridiron)
Schedule:S1: Q1 Winner vs. Q2 Winner
Wirr TsiWirr Tsi, a city that is more towards the Mountain District, is where the Chromatik National Army is located, with over sixty percent of the population being military. Besides being an army town, it's also where a lot of the armaments are manufactured. It's not a very exciting town, but an important one.
Venue: The Shock (Cap. 51,350, 18,000 Seats)
The Shock, home to the Wirr Tsi Shock, was built to house the Army's football team. It's not a very flashy stadium, but it was built rather recently, so it's state-of-the-art.
Residents:
Wirr Tsi (Rainbow League System Red League, Football)
ScheduleS2: Q3 Winner vs. Q4 Winner
ChromiaChromia (previously Chromatik City) is the Capital of Chromatika and the seat of its government. The city is located ten miles east of the border with the Heartland and Deprí Districts, and some of the suburbs of the city spill into the other two districts. It is in Chromia that the Rainbow Party now holds its power, and where Keri Wyse Aart serves as the Premier. It is also the site where most of the atrocities of the previous regime were committed, so it is a very historical and very conflicting site for most Chromatiks.
Venue: Capitalizt Dome (Cap. 144,000)
The crowning jewel of Chromatika, and the national stadium where international matches are usually held. It's your typical big-team stadium, home of the Chromatik Capitalizt. It is one of the few stadiums that are only used for football matches. The national collegiate finals and high school finals are held here, too.
Residents:
Chromatik (Rainbow League System Red League, Football)
Chromatik City Cyan (Chromatik Football League, Gridiron)
Schedule3PPO: S1 Loser vs. S2 Loser
D'reaA small town located a few miles from Chromia, D'rea is used mostly to house the overflow from Chromia. Though there are a few other neat things about the city, its function as the place where a lot of the Chromia working populace live makes it an important one.
Venue: Henza Center (Cap. 66,530)
This is the first stadium built in Chromatika for the purposes of Gridiron Football first. Soon to be the new home for the Chromatik Gridiron Squad and the Chromatik City Cyan, the Henza Center is an open-roofed, state of the art stadium built with a gridiron field in mind. The World Bowl Final will be the very first game played here, a worthy occasion to christen a new stadium.
Schedule:Final: S1 Winner vs. S2 Winner

The former champions of the World Bowl (XXX and XXXV), the Grid Corps are back at it again and ready to rough up everyone on their way to the playoffs. Then they'll probably take an L or something idk
ROSTER / DEPTH CHARTHere's the roster containing the names, numbers, and notes for each player. Players are listed in depth chart order.
As far as player rotation goes, generally the starters will go the entire match unless cases of injury or fatigue, obviously. Longtime veteran quarterback Dak Waterman has retired from World Bowl play, so Dustin Beck will be taking the starting job. There are currently no plans to have a two-QB system like there was before. At halfback, Jack Hoy will go for most of the game, except on short 3rd and 4th downs where Antonio Anders will be in. The lesser receivers (below Miller in the depth chart) will shuffle between drives and periods at random, depending on which player want to be in the most. Starting linemen will generally play the whole game. Defensively, the secondary will shuffle after the half on occasion. Some of the front 7 will shuffle as well, but generally Cross, Tomek, and Masters will always be in. Punters generally trade off punts. Watts always kicks field goals and Stig always does kickoffs.

STRATEGYThe name of the game for the Grid Corps is aggression and power.
The offense of the Grid Corps is balanced, splitting up responsibilities for yardage between running and passing plays. None is really favored over the other, since everybody on the team is good, but in crunch time situations, they're likely to pass more than run (although running is still used to keep the defense honest). The base formation is the shotgun, although the I, pistol, and sometimes singleback are still common. Most shotgun plays are run from a single RB set, although having a FB or another RB in the backfield isn't out of the ordinary. The most common personnel is RB-TE-WR-WR-WR, but the Corps is willing to mix any amount of personnel thanks to the depth and skill at their disposal.
Most running plays are either inside the tackles or just outside them. Stretch runs are rare unless the blocking is on point, or the opposing defense can't stop them. Zone running and power running are evenly split. Fullback-led runs are also very common, especially on third down and in the red zone. A very common play is a triple option out of the I formation: it could be a fullback handoff, a halfback pitch, or a quarterback keeper. The Wildcat formation always shows up a couple times a game, especially if the opposing defense is stumped. Passing plays have a lot of elements, not necessarily a vertical offense but not necessarily a conservative one either. Balls-out deep plays are rare, they're no stranger to going deep, but the OC prefers to run posts or double moves than straight fly routes. Deep routes are thrown relatively often to keep the defense honest thanks to the incredible QB and WR talent available. When the game is tight, the Corps is excellent at the hurry-up offense, having a deep playbook to constantly keep the defense off guard.
The defense is also aggressive. Blitzing is very, very common, as the defense is fearless. Even on non-blitz plays, the defensive linemen go all out, and if a player's zone is totally empty, they'll start rushing to the pocket (for better or worse). Man blitzes on first down are a regularity, but you likely won't see more than 3 non-linemen blitzing on a play (unless it's goalline, of course). When an opposing offense is stuck inside the five, the Corps will likely come out with everyone except the defensive backs blitzing. Scoring safeties are the pride of the Grid Corps, and thus they'll go for it as much as possible. They'll also pack the line on the other goalline inside the five, but if a team is 3rd/4th and Goal outside of the 7 or 8, they're likely to just pack the end zone with as many defensive backs as possible. When not in goalline formation, they'll usually opt for a 4-man rush. 4-3 and Nickel defenses are Corps staples, unless the situation calls for a change in strategy (obviously). The Corps runs both man and zone evenly, but prefers Cover 2 man. Usually they'll start with man coverage until the team they're playing shows proficiency in beating man, then they'll switch to zone with man and the trademark blitzes thrown in. Blitzes themselves are commonly done by the linebackers, corner and safety blitzes are highly unlikely as the Defensive Coordinator doesn't like bringing guys out of the secondary. Zone blitzes on crucial third downs have been known to happen. In all, they aren't afraid to take chances in big spots and bring pressure.
Special teams for the Grid Corps is hallmarked by fake plays. Whether it's a misleading kick return (moving all the blockers to the opposite side of the field from where the ball is going), lateral returns even when the game doesn't depend on it, passes or runs from special teams formations, or even simply pretending to fumble the ball to pull rushers out of their lanes, the Corps practices it all. In addition, the defensive special teams is highly aggressive. Rushing on punt returns, super fast kick blocks, or even line hurdling to block kicks. This is made much easier by the physiology of the Corps of course.
The Corps almost exclusively opts for two-points conversions for their first few touchdowns. In a blowout win, they'll likely shift to normal PATs after the half. Don't be surprised to see fake PATs to try and get the 2PC. The playbook is deep and the number of dynamic playmakers means that two point conversion plays are well-rehearsed, hence why they're pretty fearless going for it.
PHYSIOLOGYI recommend you read
this. It contains important information on how Drawkians are different from your average human. In a nutshell, they're over 7 feet tall on average, and have larger proportions to match. Now, they're also lankier and less stocky all-around, but that doesn't mean some like a D-tackle can't get thick and muscular, it's not just not the average build. Now, this may conflict with some of your RPing preferences or make it harder to RP about us, so you're totally free to just ignore that and pretend we're the same as humans. That's totally your call, and I don't mind it either way.
VENUEFor group stage home games, Drawkland will be playing in Metro Arena, the 150,000 seat indoor gridiron stadium in the heart of Metropolon, Drawkland's capital.
PERMISSIONSMy opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:

Godmod Scoring Events: Hell yes.
RP Injuries to my Players: To an extent.

World Bowl 41 - Ko-orenite National Team A quarterfinal appearance was probably on par for the inexperience of the team in World Bowl 40. Several retirements forced the hand of Stij Batterink and led to a team that's a tad worse than what we've seen in previous World Bowls. Last season was largely cancelled by travel restrictions caused by a redrawing of subdivisional borders, a process that went on for far longer than anyone dared hope.
Coaching StaffStij Batterink (head coach)
Offence: Val Hardman (offensive coordinator), Simon Palmsterk (QB), Yv Garnier (RB), Teonnach yLawdmell (WR), Olivier Olander (OLine)
Defence: Luc Jauffret (defensive coordinator), Stewart Cropp (DLine), Tednawf yGastaff (LB), Listenau Jenurdherinden (DBacks)
Special Teams: Duncan Huckstep (ST coordinator)
OffenceThe offence was selected to be as versatile as possible. Plasman is a pocket passer, Arerira is a mobile dual threat quarterback, and Kosmauthaunden is more of a risk taker, capable of launching the ball downfield. Depending on which of these three starts, we should see three very different offences out there. Thorebourne is a three-down back, powerful, patient, and hard to bring down. Galway and Hellyer are more agile and can beat defences on the outside. Wilson will play a lot of snaps as fullback: a dump route receiver first, blocker second, and running back third. Tharadhen and Suthmeer are tremendous receivers, while Vino is more of a blocker. Ko-oren is always a bit limited in receivers: Junstarin and Schoolhendrik are the ones that can get all the impressive catches but lack separation, Welsh and Junga are good one-on-one but not too great at finding seams. The slot receivers, Head, ySarrwdd, and Whitlock, are agile and sometimes double as running backs/fullbacks. No matter which QB starts, the ball will be spread around a lot. The starters on the offensive line are pass blockers more than run blockers, but can get both done.

DefenceAgain, everyone looks at the defence as the source of our success. The extreme versatility of schemes, fronts, and shells that the defence can run pre-snap and post-snap is unrivaled, and it's all on the players to execute it. Gomoltinden and Farrier are run-stuffers, Payne and Abráldez are decent pass rushers but mostly there for cutback lanes, while Ahern and Aalander are true edge rushers. Backed up by an elite unit of linebackers, Guildeforde, Barnett, and Gunmothinden are selected because they are good in coverage as well as in tackling, while Holmgroen is a better pass rusher. Altefeer and Noorddal are great in the trenches and will play more snaps versus run-first teams. Lastly, the secondary is where things come together. The Dragonflies will play a decent percentage of their snaps in nickel defence, with Ensink, Dutertre, Moore, and Wongar as the cornerbacks. Devilliers is up-and-coming and will see a lot of action as well. The safeties see less action: the excellent ballhawk Mesjathaunden has taken a step back due to injury and we simply don't have the same kind of commanding safety on the roster. Dieleman and Kadwell can try for interceptions and help over the top while Turaundhinthen and Dakitherinthen are occasionally involved in blitzes. Again, the entire team hinges on the various pre-snap looks from the secondary and turning those into last-second blitzes or complete changes between man/zone defences.

Choose my scorers: Yes
Choose scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes. I'll determine severity.
Godmod injuries: No
Godmod "other" events: Nothing beyond stuff like heavy rains, strong winds, nervous players having trouble sleeping and the like. No killing players or blowing up stadia.
Head Coach: Les Steckhall, 41 (ex-Portland Pirates)
After he was denied an opportunity to serve as offensive coordinator by Pirates coach Gil Spencer, former Stars coach Tim Gates's resignation opened the door for Steckhall to become the head coach. He will call the offence.
Quarterbacks Coach: Gavin Davis, 37
Yes, THAT Gavin Davis. He served as quarterbacks coach for the Arena Bowl bronze medalist Stars and will serve as de facto offensive coordinator without the playcalling responsibilities.
Running Backs Coach: Mike Pendry, 56
His Portland Pirates team led the Incorporated Gridball League in rushing, helping make up for an inexperienced quarterback.
Wide Receivers Coach: Mel Brady, 51
He serves in the same position on Woodstock's coaching staff, so he is used to the more wide open offence Gates wants in the nation's capital.
Tight Ends Coach: Marc Johnson, 40
He played on the last Stars team to suit up in a World Bowl. Currently in his first coaching role.
Offensive Line Coach: George Cowley, 40
Also played for the Stars in their previous World Bowl appearance, he has been the offensive line coach for a semipro team for three seasons.
Defensive Coordinator: Kyle Hanley, 51
Hanley plays an aggressive 4-3 defence with frequent blitzes, much like his predecessor Kirk Olivadotti.
Defensive Line Coach: Tyler Paige, 49
The younger brother of former Stars coach Arthur Paige, Tyler works extensively with the line and with edge linebackers.
Linebackers Coach: Jerome London, 45
He was a coach on the field for the Stars as a player and will formally coach the linebacker corps now.
Secondary Coach: Kevin Leonard, 45
Another veteran of the last Stars team who takes on a coaching role.
Special Teams Coordinator: Dylan Massey, 52
Massey has tutored kickers and seems to specialise in turning them into walk off kick experts.
Offence: Balanced (0 modifier)
Defensive style: Base 4-3 with frequent blitzes
Two-point conversion modifier: LOGICAL
Home surface: Grass (Joe Gibbs Stadium, Woodstock - capacity 75,900)
STARTERS
OFFENCE
QB: Sam Rosen (6-foot, 205 pounds (Portland), 28
Steckhall was able to lure his signal caller from the Pirates. He hopes that Rosen's familiarity with his offence will speed up his learning curve.
RB: Ty'Relle Clinton (Portland), 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, 24
He employs a bruising running style, but he can surprise defenders with speed and quickness when he gets out in space.
FB: Les Creighton (New Jeruselem Monks), 6-foot-1, 245 pounds
Creighton's a blocker who will occasionally get the ball in short yardage situations.
WR: Steve Swain (Corcorran Cruisers), 6-foot-3, 205 pounds
He's the guy you want to get the ball in crucial third down conversions.
WR: Matt Largent (Wilmington Roughnecks), 5-foot-11, 185 pounds
He's the speedster in the lineup and he's the deep threat.
TE: Al Langston, 6-foot-5, 265 pounds (Woodstock)
He started as a blocker until Week 7 last season when he caught eight passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Now he handles both roles.
LT: Matt Frost, 6-foot-4, 325 pounds (Woodstock), 29 years old
Frost protects Locklear's blind side in Woodstock and is expected to here.
LG: Nate Felton (Corcorran), 6-foot-2, 319 pounds, 31 years old
He was on the last Stars team and will be counted on for veteran presence as much as his blocking.
C: Rodney Tucker (Portland), 6-foot-2, 293 pounds, 33 years old
Tucker makes up for lack of size by technique and experience. He's the de facto captain of the line.
RG: Marty Vance (Nicksia Knights), 6-foot-5, 335 pounds
He was always nicknamed House when he was growing up, even after he was no longer THE biggest player on either team.
RT: Ike Dennehy (Truxtun Commodores), 6-foot-5, 355 pounds
Dennehy is used to protecting the blind side of a lefty quarterback, and he can throw terrifying blocks in the run game.
DEFENCE
DE: Arlen Cunningham (Wilmington), 6-foot-3, 280 pounds
He's a pass rusher through and through. Paige is expected to sub him out for short yardage run situations.
DT: Colin Grassley (Rypien Renegades), 6-foot-3, 320 pounds
He is especially dangerous at stuffing the run game. Has one-half sack for his entire career.
DT: Pete Downey (Somerset Snakes), 6-foot-4, 360 pounds
He's another run-stopper who will be subbed for in pass rush situations.
DE: Clancy Wilson (Woodstock), 6-foot-3, 295 pounds
Another guy who can rush the passer. He can stay in on short yardage situations.
WLB: Artem Roshovski (Portland), 6-foot-2, 265 pounds
Pass rusher. Lives in the weight room. Often plays pass rushing defensive end on third and long.
MLB: Howard Dent (Woodstock), 6-foot-1, 255 pounds
He calls the signals for the defence. He knows how Paige thinks and what he wants.
SLB: Calvin Jacks (Wilmington), 6-foot-3, 270 pounds
Known more as a run-stuffer who can play end in a pinch, he logged a career-high five sacks last season.
CB: Will Donnelly (Portland), 6-foot, 200 pounds
He typically plays the opposing team's best receiver and is known as a shutdown corner.
CB: Quinn Bowles (Woodstock), 5-foot-11, 190 pounds
He's more of a speed guy than even Donnelly is, but isn't a sure tackler.
FS: Cliff Longoria (Corcorran), 6-foot-4, 240 pounds
Think the late Sean Taylor. That's how he plays.
Strong Safety: Zane Yates (Portland), 6-foot-2, 235 pounds
He's another terrifying hitter on a team full of terrifying hitters.
BENCH
OFFENCE
QB: Mike Barnett (Wilmington), 6-foot-3, 210 pounds.
Not the best arm, but he can execute a West Coast offence if necessary.
RB: Paul Edgerton (Woodstock), 5-foot-9, 195 pounds
He's a scatback who can catch passes out of the backfield when called upon.
FB: Wilson Marquez (Truxtun), 6-foot-3, 250 pounds
WR: Hayden Gregory (Portland Power, women's gridball team) 5-foot-7, 175 pounds, 23 years old
WR: Marquise Harris (Truxtun), 6-foot-4, 215 pounds
TE: Edison Burkett (Wilmington), 6-foot-1, 245 pounds
RB: Tom Bennett (Woodstock), 6-foot-3, 220 pounds
TE: Austin Vesey (Nicksia), 6-foot-4, 260 pounds

GAMALIEL STATE UNIVERSITY TUMBRAN NATIONAL GRIDIRON TEAM
WORLD BOWL 41
The Misfits
Home Arena: Gamaliel State University Field, capacity: 23,000
Head Coach: Charlie Brown (35)
Unsurprisingly, in a country with such a major attraction to association football, the noble sport of gridiron is...ignored, more or less. Relegated to a couple of universities (8, at the time of writing) providing college teams for an annual kickabout, the winner of which goes back with a modest silver trophy. Charlie Brown, however, wishes to change all that, and bring the sport to national prominence by signing his team - comprised wholly of students from one university (the one he coaches) - up for the World Bowl.
Needless to say, he's broken a
fair few laws for doing so, including impersonating a public servant. He's also kind of...lied to his players about this, by saying it's just a couple of friendlies against a couple of teams. Of course, this bunch of lies will come crashing down sooner rather than later, but the three-time
University Gridiron Challenge winner can certainly pull something out of his sleeve, can he?
It's not like Brown's short on coaching expertise, mind. He has won three University Gridiron Challenges, as he will often remind you. Gridiron in Tumbra is often seen as something you grow out of, not something you turn into your entire life. Brown, however, seems to have bucked that trend. He did use to play centre for the GSU team, after all.

Away Colours:

Alternate Colours:

Style Mod: +1OFFENSEOffensive Coordinator: Andrea Ratzinger (32)
No, Andrea is a man, and he
will look at you threateningly if you ask. The team in attack goes for a relatively generic formation, with two running backs and two wide receivers. Most of the time quarterback Waters will look to pass to the one furthest ahead, meaning the wide receivers are the ones most likely to receive the ball. The team will go for the two points most of the time, unless Raskin, who is the key to the two point push, is knackered (which usually occurs near the end of the third quarter) or they are ahead by more than ten points. Starters are bolded.
Pos. No. Name Age Desc.
QB 69 Dan Waters 22 Starting quarterback. Has a very mischevious streak (hence the 69) and is generally seen as
a goofball. Among the university circuit and on the field, however, is seen as a great QB with
pinpoint accurate aim (Mostly according to himself). Eager to secure a legacy before graduating and
thinks that this is the perfect chance to do so.
QB 13 Mark Stanley 21
HB 8 Tyler Davis 20 Despite being only a sophomore, Tyler is considered...one of the more mature prospects on this team,
at least mentally.. Often considered a power back, Ty is slower compared to Tom Raskin but is still
able to move the ball upfield with ease.
HB 11 John Cruz 22
HB 54 Rex Jones 20
FB 9 Tom Raskin 19 The Teenage Sensation. Managed to break into the GSU team in his first year, and managed to displace
the previous fullback so much so that he's not even on the team for this event. Mercurial, smart,
fast on his feet.
FB 47 Paul Branson 19
WR 2 John Soples 22 Quick on his feet, less so in his mind, John is very fast but also lacks game sense sometimes,
trying to bite off more than he can chew. His ability to do the unexpected, however, is what lands
him the starting WR spot.
WR 3 Francis Marr 22 Scheming, always looking for ways to get past his opponents both mentally and physically, Marr is a
quick-thinking WR who can be trusted to somehow always slip past an opponent's grasp. Does he lube
himself up before games? Nobody knows.
WR 64 Neal O'Connor 22
WR 87 Kevin Bell 19
TE 6 Russell Dean 20 Dean often preferrs to go all guns blazing when running, often asking for the ball on a passing
play. He's got the chops for it, too - one of the fastest players in the team. Has a slight tendency
to get carried away, however...
TE 23 Paul Ripley 22
TE 46 Alan Smith 19
LT 22 Max Lewis 21 One of the more intelligent players in the team (with a Wonderlic score of 37), Lewis sees being in
his position as more of an art form, and tries his best for every tackle. He is, however, slightly
jealous of Neumann's rapid rise in the team.
LT 58 Joey Whitfield 21
LG 33 Michael Griffiths 20 Griffiths' partnership with Lewis on the left is tight-knit. Originally a big slacker, his
friendship with Lewis helped to get him back into shape, so much so that he managed to secure the LG
spot on the GSU team.
LG 90 Steven Oliver 19
C 1 Sebastian Neumann 20 Tall, blond, blue-eyed, Neumann is the dream boy of many a girl on campus. As a centre he takes
great pride in being the linchpin of the five-man line, and is indeed one of the captains of the
team. He often calls plays as often as Dan Waters, and enjoys blocking. Has a slight bit of anxiety
when passing, however.
C 60 Gareth Williams 22
RG 7 Alex Richardson 19 Burly and hulking, Richardson walked straight into the team when he first arrived in Brades. His
first season proved to be a rich one, and shows lots of promise in his playstyle.
RG 45 Jon Burrows 19
RT 27 Vincent Kramer 22 Kramer is a lone wolf off the pitch - morose, quiet and reluctant to do any kind of publicity. On
the field, however, he transforms into a versatile right tackle who has a strong partnership with
Richardson, and his understudy Kowell.
RT 38 Zachary Kowell 19
DEFENSEDefensive Coordinator: Simon Dunn (30)
Simon really doesn't know why he's here. He really doesn't want to be here either. But yet, here he is, coaching the GSU, sorry, the Tumbran Gridiron team, for their debut World Bowl appearance. Setting them up in a 4-3 formation, the team typically looks to intercept rather than tackle, though the team does sport some good tacklers as well. Starters, as above, are bolded.
Pos. No. Name Age Desc.
LE 8 Chris Jowell 20 Able to somehow anticipate plays most of the time, Jowell's uncanny game sense allows him to be
quick off the mark when the pass is made, allowing him to block off anything on the end.
LE 32 Tom Evans 19
DT 11 Evan Alvarado 19 Alvarado is your typical massive defensive tackle, and is more hard-headed and willing to charge
into situations than his partner Lazenby. With a grip strength that outgrips everyone else on the
team, Alvarado is to the defence what Richardson is on the offence.
DT 42 Andrew Lazenby 19 More laid-back than his starting partner Alvarado, Lazenby is more of a reactive player - but he
figures out situations extremely quickly and is able to close things down in a way that Alvarado
cannot. In that sense, he complements him perfectly.
DT 52 Colin Pollack 22
RE 44 Gary Watts 22 Watts is probably the weak point in this team, yet his ability is still better than Partridge's,
which is why he lands the starting spot. Tends to prefer spotting a run being made and chasing down
the player instead of continuing in the scrimmage.
RE 53 Russell Partridge 20
MLB 28 Ted Butcher 19 Butcher, in a strange yet perhaps unsurprising case of nominative determinism, is perhaps the most
sturdy and willing to go all in of the three. As the centre linebacker, Butcher enjoys going for the
quarterback to sack him, yet also knows when to hold back.
MLB 35 Wilhelm Shaw 21
ROLB 4 Marco Bennett 21 Bennett is the most intellectual of the three linebackers, allowing him to move quickly off his feet
when he sees plays. However, he is perhaps the weakest of the three starting linebackers, and is
most likely to get left behind.
ROLB 68 Robert Moore 19
LOLB 55 Tan Linghe 21 The son of immigrants, Tan is a junior looking to make an impact in his community where sports is
typically eschewed in favour of more stable careers. Is looking to go professional, and is quiet yet
hardworking, but goes hard.
CB 66 Hans Kwaitkowski 19 Just like Neumann, Hans is the latest in GSU's production line of tall, blond, blue-eyed boys. He is
surprisingly fast for his height, and is able to cover most wide receivers. His style of play,
however, is rather one-dimensional.
CB 49 Richard McCreary 22 McCreary's special move is to full-on flying tackle the wide receiver as a very last resort. He
prefers, however, to intercept the ball, and is uncannily good at it.
CB 5 Darren Brown 21
FS 77 John Lane 20 Technically proficient and fast, the quickly-maturing Lane is looking to cement his place as the
starting free safety above Anstey. Eager to prove himself and enthusiastic, he was born with good
gamesense and reading ability.
FS 81 Mark Anstey 20
SS 9 Geoffrey Benton 19 Better at tackling than Lane, but slightly less good at pretty much everything else, Benton is a
good fit for Brown's 4-3 defence and the way he plays - which is why he is ahead of Hughes.
SS 16 Tom Hughes 20
SPECIAL TEAMSSpecial Teams Coach: Harry Hewitt (34)
Harry is perhaps the only one in this team that knows
exactly what Charlie Brown is up to. Oh, he knows, all right. But he's not going to say a word.
The team prefers going for field goals instead of the fourth down, unless the team is over 40 yards away from the goal, at which the main kicker isn't confident enough of hitting the target. The main people on the teams are bolded.
Pos. No. Name Age Desc.
K 99 Nick Evans 20 Originally Evans wanted to be a goalkeeper, but was deemed too small and was thus released from
Brades United's academy. Now in his sophomore year, Evans' deadly right foot has proven that he can
kick the ball anyhwhere on the field he wants.
K 36 Michael Jones 22
P 10 Jon Norbury 21 Norbury has a mean left foot that he uses to his advantage. Now a senior, his skills as a punter fit
his reserved nature. He tends to go for the simplest solution rather than spend too much time
thinking about where to place the ball, as he believes that the easiest solution is almost always
the best one as well.
P 83 Graham Sexton 19
H 56 Rudolph Stewart 21 The Man With Amazing Forearm Strength And Stability, Stewart's position, while trivial, is key to
Evans' goalscoring abilities. He accepts his diminshed role - and is just happy to be here.
LS 21 Paul Robinson 19 Brooding and a loner, Robinson more often than not gets the job done, but rarely interacts with the
team otherwise.
LS 19 Rob Killick 20
KR 88 Stephen Goldstein 19 Goldstein is often known as the safe hands of the team. If he is able to predict where the ball will
land, he's more often than not able to get to where it will go. A master of positioning.
KR 48 Wade Hopkins 22

SURGING AHEAD: ST. KANYE'S WORLD BOWL XLI CAMPAIGNThey've won games. They've reached the playoffs. But can they win games
in the playoffs? In World Bowl XL, the St. Kanye Surge won an impressive eight of ten group stage games, but they unfortunately suffered a Round of 16 exit courtesy of New England. Now the boys in purple and lime are back, having risen thirteen spots to twelfth in the world rankings, and they're hoping to improve on last season's performance, get further into the postseason, maybe even challenge for the title. But first, they have to survive an assorted mix of new challengers and familiar foes.
SOUTH NEWLANDIAThe thing about series debutants is that there is little to no data with which to gauge their strengths and weaknesses. One thing the Yeezies know for sure though is that the temperatures in South Newlandia can get really high, as seen when their NSSCRA counterparts visited the country for a race.
THE DESICCATED STATESThis is the other unranked team in Group E, who appear to have come from a faraway land and are only now learning the ropes of gridiron. Despite this, the Surge will treat them as equals, neither underestimating nor taking it easy on them.
KO-ORENMatches against this side, ranked fourth in the world, often end up in low-scoring "snoozefests" due to how hard it is to score against them. Last season, the Surge split their series with the Dragonflies, losing 10-17 in Kardashia before getting revenge on the road, 14-3. Many are hoping that this could be, or that it already is, the start of a great rivalry between the two sides.
KOHNHEADThe Brains are ranked thirtieth, but they are not to be overlooked. They were demolished 10-40 by St. Kanye in the World Bowl XL opener, but then gave them quite a scare in the Matchday 6 rematch, almost getting the upset before falling 27-31 on a heartbreaking goal line interception.
Now, let's get to know the Surge themselves. Offense, defense and special teams all play an important role, and in this team, all have their share of standout players. Well, the rest of the team aren't any slouches either - why else would they be picked to represent the whole of the Glorious Free Republic, right?
STAFFJeff Delphine, head coach and master motivator, runs the show, together with his trio of genius strategists in
Dan Shelby,
Kevin Macintyre and
Ken Kirby (offense, defense and special teams, respectively). The Surge is a pass-heavy, blitz-happy team, meaning that they want to get things done on the air and force their opponents to do so as well. However, they still work hard to make sure that they don't do badly on the things they focus less on.
QUARTERBACKSRalph Joseph "R.J." Linetti remains as the Surge's starting QB and offensive captain. He's a dual threat, being both an accurate thrower as well as a speedy scrambler. Backup
Landon Klein is less mobile, but throws longer bombs, while young
Harry Santos has also shown some flashes of brilliance in practice.
RUNNING BACKSAside from Linetti, St. Kanye's ground attack lies mostly in the hands (or rather, legs) of
Noah Sherman, a powerful back who doesn't think twice before bulldozing his opponents on the way to the endzone.
Randall Cole also makes appearances, most notably in third down situations; in contrast to Sherman, he relies on speed and elusiveness to get the job done. Fullback
Nico Jackson is a great blocker, but also has the ability to catch passes; the same applies to his new backup, little brother
Marco.
RECEIVERSThe receiving corps is where the Surge truly shine. Primary WR
Bruce Dobler has the best hands on the team, while in the slot, we have the fast and flashy
Patrick Moore.
Taylor Johns is used in three WR sets and as the kick return man. The starting tight end is the agile
Hussein Jeffers;
Greg Malloy, his backup, is perhaps more known as the punt returner.
O-LINEA bit of a shakeup in this category.
Burton Baxter and
Derek Horton are new additions to the team,
Gordon Ferguson takes over as the starting center, while
Clay Conrad and
Mitch Grant retain their places to the right of the line.
D-LINEThe three starting defensive linemen have been playing together since Arena Bowl VI, and they have gelled into a fearsome run-stopping unit. Left end
Simon Carver is fast and energetic for a big guy, nose tackle
Robby Edison is both an unstoppable force and an immovable object, and
Matt Dawson is a total sack master.
LINEBACKERSGotten past the Surge's front three? Well, your troubles are not yet over.
Jasper Heath,
Hansel Jones and
Alvin Faris are all fast, smart and hard-hitting, but the true standout of this group is
Justin Varley - he can tackle, sack, force fumbles and incompletions, and intercept, among others.
DEFENSIVE BACKSFree safety
Gary Bradman was the defensive specialist in the Arena Bowl team, and is now the defensive captain of the World Bowl squad. He has a great knack for reading and disrupting the other team's offensive strategies. Opposite him in the strong safety position is
Oliver Law, the best tackler among the secondary.
Aidan O'Connor and
Mason Schwartz are the starting cornerbacks, with
Bernard Van Pelt being used in the nickel package. The three of them are good at covering opposing receivers, but even more so at getting picks.
SPECIAL TEAMSJames Rasputin is perhaps the most underrated player in this team, if not in the whole tournament - a deadly combination of distance and accuracy and is almost always guaranteed three (or one) points whenever he steps onto the field. The Yeezies rely on punting less than other teams do. but that doesn't mean
Chris Florence has lost his importance. He does the kickoffs, and he does it well.
Ruben Elroy is an excellent long snapper.
Isaak Clearwater, while listed as a wide receiver, doesn't catch any passes. He instead makes his name known as a gunner, hunting down the returner during kickoffs or punts.
The Group E schedules have already been released. Here are the Kanyeans', including what uniforms will be used, where, and against whom.

Team Manager: Commander Threva Dewspark
Female, Anthro-Desiccant
Threva Dewspark is the executive officer and acting captain of DSS Poseider, a Kakohada-class exploratory vessel in the Deep Space Fleet of the Interstellar Federation of the Desiccated States. She, as is true of most senior staff, is a native Desiccant; however many of her crew are not. Anthro-Desiccants are humanoid, but relative to humans, very tall and slender, with translucent skin. They have empathic (but not telepathic) abilities, capable of detecting base emotion and determining when someone is lying, but not reading complex higher thoughts. Commander Dewspark will rarely be seen at games as she will be leading repairs on the Poseider. Commander Dewspark is female; since primitive peoples put great importance in genders, these have been clarified where possible on the roster. The Interstellar Federation recognizes several genders.
Tactics Coach: Lieutenant Amélie Chiasson
Female, Subterranean-Desiccant
Lieutenant Chiasson is the ship’s communications officer. She is a computer scientist with a specialization in xenolinguistics. Capable of performing calculations that would defeat the most advanced technologies of primitive civilizations, she has an IQ of 200 – and bear in mind that the Desiccants count in base 16. Chiasson has downloaded and assimilated information about football and begun instructing the crew in how to play it. She will take the role of play-caller and sideline coach. She is Subterranean, a Desiccant racial offshoot that grew up as a slave people toiling in the mines underneath the planetary surface. Of course, today, Subterranean-Desiccants are proudly liberated and have the same rights as any Desiccant, but racial traits remain: they tend to be squat, with very small, weak eyes; have very large ears extraordinarily tuned to the most minute vibrations, and are further capable of detecting vibrations through padding on their enlarged fingertips, all 12 of them, and through their long white (in Lt. Chiasson’s case) whiskers. They have heavy body hair; despite being female, Lieutenant Chiasson has a lengthy beard.
Physical coach: Lieutenant Nysathusa
Female, Aqua-Desiccant
Lieutenant Nysathusa hides a beautiful face behind complex breathing equipment that she needs to survive on dry land. Even with the equipment she cannot go longer than a day or two without needing to return to full water submersion, or else her skin will dry out. She’s a dark shade of blue with a long lilac-scaled tail and two large horns (technically, tusks) that sprout from amidst her bright red hair. Powerfully muscular, sinuously graceful, 9 feet tall, she is the ship’s navigation officer – but at the moment, they have nowhere to navigate to, nor a Hyper-Drive to navigate with. As such, she’s filling in as a general morale and physical training officer. She will teach the crew the physical actions needed e.g. throwing, catching, tackling.
Equipment manager: Chief Petty Officer Fompy
Neuter, Murkling
Chief Fompy is, like most senior NCOs, a grizzled veteran who inspires fear in junior officers and wet young crewpersons alike, which is all the more impressive given they are only about 9 inches tall. Murklings are a race of crafty, dextrous technicians, not particularly intelligent but very skilled at physical manipulation. Murkling engineers are highly prized for their ability to get just about any piece of tech running. Fompy has been put in charge of manufacturing uniforms and other playing equipment based on Lt. Chiasson’s specifications. Murklings produce a silk-like fabric through their excretory glands. Fompy produces magenta and cyan strands, so these will be the dominant colors of the uniforms. Their job is made harder by the need to produce helmets of varying sizes (and in some cases number) and uniforms adapted to a varying number of limbs and shape of body, as well as taking into account different biological needs. Note that the Desiccant States uses a base 16 numbering system and therefore the uniform numbers may not conform to international standards.
Ground crew managers: Senior Chief Petty Officer Tætærqan Varziev / Dr. Svante Thormodsson
Male, Subterranean-Desiccant / Male, Urso-Desiccant
Chief Varziev is a small, busy, experienced flight deck manager who is none too pleased at having to convert his launch bay into a football field. He has grumblingly complied with the regulations, though the “stadium” is low on frills. Artificial gravity and atmosphere will be provided. Varziev is also in charge of laying on shuttles to transport visiting teams, incapable of spaceflight themselves, to Desiccant “home” games.
Dr. Thormodsson is 12 feet tall on his hind paws, with foot-long razor sharp claws and a double row of sharp teeth set in immensely powerful jaws. But he should not be stereotyped as a brute owing to his racial characteristics: he is in fact a rather shy scientist, a xenobotanical specialist who prefers the company (and taste!) of plants; rare for an Urso-Desiccant, he is a vegetarian. He is very comfortable in cold climates but struggles in warmer weather, shedding his heavy fur and exuding a powerful musk. He has been tasked with growing grass to lay on the field, but his early experiments have managed to grow only blue grass, giving the field a somewhat unusual look.
Head cheerleader: Skaduwee
Hermaphroditic, Sand-Worm
A 96-foot long sand-worm, Skaduwee was disappointed to be left out of the team. But xe have neither hands nor feet, so could not easily adapt to the game. After some thought, Commander Dewspark found a role for xe as cheerleader (even if xe can’t hold the pom-poms). Xe will engage in sinuous rhythmic displays along the sideline, xir iridescent skin adding color. Xe are incapable of speech but will thump xir tail to produce a surprising range of sounds. In the wild Worm-Desiccants are sometimes ridden or used as beasts of burden, but it’s considered impolite to treat a paying passenger this way (Skaduwee was on xir way to a new colony; sand-worms are highly prized on newly terraformed worlds as xe naturally process the soil and encourage nutrient development, so are commonly invited to off-world). Fompy has made a small skirt for Skaduwee, which will be cinched approximately at xir mid-section.
Players: The squad will be formed from volunteer members of the crew and passenger manifest of the Poseider. They are not professional football players and most have only just learned of the game, so don’t expect too much skill. On the other hand, many are physically superior to average humans, so there’s always the chance they can convert these attributes into their play on the field. The players wear base 16 uniform numbers; numbers 32 to 4f and 5a to 63 are ineligible unless reporting otherwise. Players are listed in approximate depth chart order and lower players will fill in on special teams.
Quarterbacks
#d Ensign Jarntyr Mornwulf
Male, Anthro-Desiccant
Of course, some crew will mutter, an Anthro-Desiccant at quarterback. But it’s hard to question Ensign Mornwulf’s physical characteristics: 7 feet tall and fleet of foot, yet with a powerful throwing arm, the young science officer has also taken quickly to the game, helped by his empathic powers. He’s definitely not going to be the most physically capable quarterback at the World Bowl, nor the most tactically adept, but in terms of the basic job of throwing the ball he’s about as good as the crew could hope to offer up. Being just an Ensign and yet essentially leading the team presents a challenge to the military hierarchy to which he’s not quite used, so bossing around Lieutenants and occasional Commanders will either be a bit awkward, or a much-abused guilty pleasure.
#3 Technician Ninth Grade Jacques-Natanael Whisperfire
Male, Anthro-Desiccant
Unsurprisingly, an Anthro-Desiccant is also QB2. The literal lowest ranked person on the entire crew is a heartbeat away from the most important position on the team. Technician Whisperfire, who works in the Stellar Cartography lab (currently off-line and thus giving him plenty of time to study the playbook) is nonetheless deserving of the role. Not only does he have the physical attributes (height, acute vision, footspeed, powerful arm) he is a surprisingly strong empath for one so young, giving him enhanced situational awareness and strong bonds with his receivers. He’s really taken to the game and is always suggesting new plays they could adapt, although unfortunately not all of the rest of the team are as quick as him on the uptake.
#0 Kailyn Greystark
Female, Anthro-Desiccant
Cdr. Dewspark has released Kailyn from confinement: she was being held on a charge of smuggling narcotics, but such legal niceties seem irrelevant so far away from the reach of galactic law enforcement. Besides, all evidence was destroyed when the Poseider was pulled into the anomaly so it’s unlikely any prosecution would stick. While the rest of the crew don’t trust Kailyn, Cdr. Dewspark senses some good in her. Kailyn is a flighty, elusive runner – it’s a wonder she was ever caught – and like most Anthro-Desiccants is tall. She doesn’t have the most powerful throwing arm but her pin-point accuracy is testament to the weapon she had holstered on her hip (and despite releasing her, that’s one thing Cdr. Dewspark hasn’t returned). Kailyn is technically QB3, but will be used on some wildcat plays; otherwise, she might be used as a kick returner, given her speed and lateral agility.
#13 Xanderick Spendlove
Male, Anthro-Desiccant
Xanderick is just a boy, really, a teenager who’s obviously excited to play a game like football. The rest of the crew are concerned for his safety, though, and given the physical nature of the game have tried to find a position that will keep him out of harm’s way as much as possible. Being on the depth chart at QB4 offers him a feeling of importance with relatively little danger of getting his slender frame hurt by actually needing to play. So he doesn’t feel totally left out he’ll be the holder on kicks, a singular skill he feels embarrassed at being relegated to – but still enthusiastically partakes of as it gives him an opportunity to take the field. An orphan who’s travelling to begin a new life on a colony world, he enjoys taking part in the team activities and wishes everyone wouldn’t baby him so much, meaning he might occasionally try to get stuck in if a returner ventures near him or they run a trick play.
Running backs:
#39 Medic Third Class Noah Mindiron
Male, Anthro-Desiccant
Noah is a first responder who’s been, understandably, busy. No one can begrudge him some time off. And they shouldn’t need to, as he could well be one of the team’s best players. Even before training began he was highly physically fit, stronger built than the average Anthro-Desiccant and with excellent endurance. Medics have a reputation as being jocks – they’re not medical doctors, just applying immediate first aid – and he certainly lives up to that. His empathic powers are limited, however. He stood out during training as a particularly capable player and will look to be the team’s primary ball-carrier on offense.
#22 Lieutenant Edgallin Hendra
Drone Male, Insecto-Desiccant
Lieutenant Hendra is a skilled computer engineer currently undergoing something of an identity crisis. Normally ħe is one of the ship’s most valuable officers, interfacing with the computer – and with the hive mind of other Insecto-Desiccants. The former is badly damaged, the latter is totally cut off as the Poseider drifts in this strange sector of space. Ħe finds the silence of individual thought deeply distressing and it’s no surprise ħe’s one of the most enthusiastic volunteers on the team, finding some small shred of hive-mind-relief in the team huddle. Like most Insecto-Desiccants ħe runs on four triple-hinged legs, giving him superb balance and the ability to break laterally. Ħis long antennae – Fompy has drilled holes in his helmet to allow them to poke out – aid ħis balance further. Ħe is rather thin but capable of surprising strength. In the interests of fair play, ħe has agreed to wear a mouthguard to deactivate ħis acid-spraying glands. As a runner, ħe may not always be breaking through tackles, but ħis lateral movement will make plenty of defenders miss.
#21 Damage Control Technician Fourth Grade Iordanis Nassatos
Male, Halcyon-Desiccant
A tactical systems technician, assigned to the fire control room at a moment when there’s not much cause to be firing off torpedos, joining the football team was an understandable distraction for Iordanis. Unfortunately he’s not likely to see all that much playing time: despite good speed, he has quite poor ball-handling. He’s also not a particularly hard worker, with poor crew evaluations for effort, which have rubbed off on a pretty lax attitude to learning the playbook. Maybe, given he’s fast and quite agile, he could be deployed as a special teams player: he’s more likely to see the field that way than on regular downs.
Fullbacks:
#2d Ensign Silver Xin
Female, Urso-Desiccant
Ensign Silver is a junior intelligence officer. Like many Urso-Desiccants, she is exceptionally intelligent, and also hugely powerful and strong. She however has very poor eyesight and is not skilled in hand-eye coordination. Though her size would make her useful on the offensive line she’s not really skilful enough in learning blocking assignments, so instead the crew have decided to use her as a ‘big back’, either clearing the way as a blocking full-back, or occasionally rumbling over in short yardage situations. She’s friendly and affable, but she’s still 10-and-a-half-feet tall with jaws capable of snapping a spine, so, best make sure you’re friendly and affable with her, too.
#31 Chief Petty Officer Cada Hum
Hermaphroditic, Kakke
Chief Hum is a veteran NCO in the security and tactical department. Xe is an animal-wrangler who controls and deploys the unit’s assorted trained animals for guarding, hunting, and other important missions. Xe is a Kakke, a race of stocky, powerfully-built, completely hairless humanoids with green skin, webbed fingers, and only a single eye. Given xir age and lack of physical condition it’s unlikely Chief Hum will see much playing time, but xe are a genial sort, a good wise old head to have in the clubhouse, with many tall tales and bawdy jokes from years of service.
Tight ends:
#50 Lieutenant (j.g.) Ilirio Briarpebbles
Male, Anthro-Desiccant
Lt. Briarpebbles is aide-de-camp to Lt. Cdr. Aricmarc. Unlike his CO, Lt. Briarpebbles is an enthusiastic member of the team. He’s a junior tactical officer by training, who’s on this strategic operations posting as a necessary career-step towards promotion, but not overjoyed at the idea of filing paperwork in some backwater embassy. Though he tries to hide it, it’s hard not to admit that the Poseider’s present plight has given him a sense of purpose and identity that he was hoping for. Leaping into training with the team has similarly given him the opportunity to get his hands a little dirty and engage in the kind of physical activity he was worried his desk-job assignment would make him miss out on. A natural athlete with stronger physical gifts than empathic ones, he should prove one of the team’s better players as, although he’s not especially fast, he’s proven to have excellent hands and an innate understanding of some of the nuances of the game, as well as the size to function well as a blocker thanks to his extensive hand-to-hand combat training background.
#57 Lieutenant Commander Joshua Waterfield
Male, Anthro-Desiccant
Lt. Cdr. Waterfield is a tactical operations specialist with Fleet Command, who was travelling on the Poseider to an assignment at a deep space listening post. The crew are a little uneasy around him as he’s reputed to be a very strong empath, as most intelligence officers are. Joining in the team is his way of getting them to warm up to him. Or his way of infiltrating them so he can better read them, perhaps. Either way, he seems to be enjoying learning to play football and is well suited to it thanks to his years of physical training that have added an unusual degree of muscularity to the normally slender Anthro-Desiccant build, and very large hands. He’s not especially fast but has a certain shiftiness thanks to his ability to read defensive players’ intentions.
#51 Unar Grogga
Male, Crag
Unar is a legal clerk who works for Jjuuddeerrbbiiddiill and was accompanying hheerr on hheerr mission. A stocky young Crag made of moss-green rocks, he’s always getting into scraps on account of his argumentative nature – he has the heart-stone but not the brain-stones for the combative nature of prosecuting cases – combined with other species’ prejudices about Crags. Jjuuddeerrbbiiddiill is fond of him, however, and sshhee is usually on hand to help smooth over the arguments with hheerr sensible wisdom. Grogga was one of the first players to sign up for a sport that involves running around hitting people. He appears to be unaware his role might ever require him to catch a ball: he just loves bashing into defenders, so might mainly be used in blocking assignments.
Wide receivers:
#56 Ensign Ahnah Tuuluuwaq
Female, Arcto-Desiccant
Ensign Tuuluuwaq is a junior security officer on her first mission. Typical of young security officers, she left the Academy with a training in tactical systems control and galactopolitical combat analysis, and finds herself assigned to guard duty for dignitaries or taking point on dangerous away missions. But if she puts in a good performance, she can earn promotions and rise up to the senior ranks, taking on the kind of work for which she’s clearly intellectually capable. Unless, say, her first ships gets sucked into a spatial anomaly. But ha, what are the chances of that! To escape the monotony of her current duties tending to antsy diplomats, she’s joined the team. She has a good chance of getting a lot of playing time as she’s fast and physically strong, if a little short. Fompy has prepared a special uniform for her which will provide the requisite thermal cooling and exhaust: Arcto-Desiccants find the heat of standard environmental conditions very difficult, and she keeps her quarters at sub-freezing temperatures.
#e Neanfimh Zodaktec
Male, Anthro-Desiccant
Neanfimh is an intelligence agent in the Customs Division who was on a mission investigating arms trafficking. Like most Anthro-Desiccant intelligence operatives, he is a powerful empath who inspires mistrust around him from those who don’t understand, or believe, that he can’t literally read their thoughts, just detect their emotional direction. He’s become quite enchanted with Lt. Nysathusa since coming aboard and taken every chance to get to know her better; she’s not that interested in anything serious as she wants children some day and there are certain biological incompatibilities between the two (Aqua-Desiccant males bear the children, as opposed to Anthro-Desiccant females) but maybe a brief fling will come of it. He is helped as a receiver by his empathic abilities, sensing the movements of defenders, and making fine adjustments as his empathic bond with the quarterback informs him of minute variances in the thrown ball. Neanfimh is a good athlete too, though, and unafraid to play in the slot against bulkier linebackers. It remains to be seen whether Lt. Nysathusa will be impressed by all this.
#54 Lieutenant Commander Retal Nonopalet
Ur-Male, Thadkey
Lt. Cdr. Nonopalet is the ship’s third officer and generally commands away missions. Hx is a member of the Thadkey people, nomadic dwellers of a fiercely hot desert planet; hx finds the environment of the Poseider taxing and will escape to hxs quarters where hx can turn up the heat. Thadkey are muscular, athletic humanoids with a dark complexion, short wiry dark body hair, and eyes with the color of bright jewels (in hxs case, blue sapphires). They are well regarded as miners, capable of working in deep pits or in outer stellar atmospheres in conditions other humanoids would find intolerable; Retal took a different path, joining the Fleet and rising up the ranks. The Thadkey have a reputation as difficult loners and hx has not entirely shed the image of hxs people. It’s well known hx is the most senior officer to have disagreed with Commander Dewspark’s decision, but despite this hx is competing in the tournament, because hx is one of the best athletes among the crew. Expect hxm to be used a lot in the slot as someone unafraid to take passes over the middle.
#52 Technician First Grade Jin Ài
Female, Arcto-Desiccant
Like Ensign Tuuluuwaq, Technician Jin is an Arcto-Desiccant, shaggy-furred inhabitants of the frigid northern methane ice plains. Her blue-white fur offers camouflage in her natural environment; on the ship, it just makes her uncomfortably hot. She has a humanoid body shape but long, powerful legs from which she can spring great distances, and extremely acute eyesight, adept at picking out prey and predators in the snow-blind. She’s a records technician, and a diligent one, but playing outside seems like quite a lot of fun compared to sorting through computer memory system input chips, so she’s taken up the challenge of joining the team. She’s likely to feature on both offense and special teams: though with not the best hands, she’s one of the fastest players on the team.
#a Lieutenant (j.g.) Prothiokrew Praubes
Male, Myriad-Desiccant
Myriads are so named for their peacock-like skins. Except those aren’t eyespots: they’re actual eyes. Lieutenant Praubes has around 500 eyes, but he’s fairly young. The demands of modesty mean many of them are covered up by clothing. Lieutenant Praubes is a junior tactical officer; Myriads are commonly found in this role as their situational awareness is well-suited to the demanding environment of a battle bridge. He’s spectacularly adept at tracking thrown balls, determining their trajectory, and making the fine adjustments to time his catch to perfection. Unfortunately, Myriads are rather slender, even more so than Anthro-Desiccants, and not particularly fast, so don’t expect many YAC afterwards.
#12 Lieutenant (j.g.) PH03B3
Neuter, identifies as female, Mecha-Desiccant
A young junior officer, PH03B3 – or “Phoebe” as the crew call her – is a Savant-model android with enhanced empathic abilities. A junior tactical officer with a specialism in First Contact scenarios, she is something of a rejoinder to stereotypes about androids being cold and unfeeling; rather, her neuro-empathic transmitter probe has a range exceeding even that of Commander Dewspark. Physically, she’s a lightweight selenium-fiber model with protoplasmic gel sacs and a flesh-colored exoskeletal poly-alloy: in other words, she looks like an Anthro-Desiccant. PH03B3 has detected the excitement of the crew to be involved in the game and her pleasure receptors derive stimulation from decoding the intricate social patterns associated with team sports. However, she’s not very fast and her hand-eye coordination is poor, so she might be more of a reserve in terms of actual playing time.
Offensive line:
#45 Lieutenant Commander Zhezkeruj Muskkukki
Male, Draco-Desiccant
The ship’s chief security officer, Lt. Cdr. Muskkukki’s participation is no surprise. He’s always enjoyed physical training and while he rarely indulges in team sports, this is as good an opportunity as any. Like most Draco-Desiccants he is tall and strong, with a severe countenance. His tail affords him excellent balance despite his size. Making him starting left tackle isn’t just deference to his rank and station: he’s genuinely one of the most physically capable players on the team. The only real problem will be whether the quarterbacks can see over his horns (or avoid stepping on his tail).
#4a Crewman Sek Pitralle
Male, Crypt-Desiccant
Crewman Sek is a medical control technician, who mostly works as a lab assistant to Dr. Deithornel. The two get on reasonably well, both being people of few words. With the research on hold, Sek has found himself deployed to the medical bays, work he generally dislikes. Joining the football team is as much as anything a chance for a break from the monotony of collecting patient data and filling out record charts. Crypt-Desiccants are winged and nocturnal; he has a very tough, dark red dermal layer. His eyesight is not good but his immense ears are capable of accurate echolocation. Most Crypt-Desiccants are powerfully empathic; Sek is only about as powerful as Cdr. Dewspark, which still makes him one of the most powerful empaths on board. Physically, he’s strongly built, but his main asset is his immense wingspan: rather than separate wings on their backs like Draco-Desiccants, Crypt-Dessicant wings are skin flaps that unfold from under their long arms. Cdr. Dewspark has ordered her players not to literally take flight during the game, but even with his wings folded his arms can reach wide enough to envelop two or three rushers at a time.
#43 Ensign Lufir Mirahorn
Male, Anthro-Desiccant
Ensign Mirahorn is a junior engineering officer, an unusual specialization for an Anthro-, who tend towards the command track or sciences. He’s physically unusual, too, being stockier and stronger than the average rather slender Anthro-Desiccant. Some racial purists mutter he might have a bit of Noct in him, especially given his fairly opaque skin and unusual amber eyes. The Federation, of course, is an egalitarian body … but he still suspects Commander Dewspark looks down on him, and notices he’s stuck at Ensign while other junior Anthro- officers have already been promoted. As such, he’s joining the team to prove he belongs and demonstrate his value to the crew. He might be wrong about Cdr. Dewspark: she’s entrusted him with one of the most important positions, center, hoping that his empathic connection will serve him well in snapping to the quarterback.
#48 Lieutenant (j.g.) Cynebald Boarsblood
Male, Meta-Desiccant
A junior weapons officer, Lt. Boarsblood was the protégé of Captain Hardbear. The two were Metas, closely resembling Anthro-Desiccants but lacking their empathic powers. Cpt. Hardbear clearly saw something of himself in the hot-headed young JO, and hoped he could guide him on a path to a captain’s chair of his own one day. Now Hardbear is dead, Boarsblood is a lone Meta on a ship commanded by a hated Anthro-, and being forced to participate in a game he finds stupid. If he weren’t 8 feet tall and trained in 27 different hand-to-hand martial arts, he probably wouldn’t participate. But he is, and this is a chance to take out some grief and frustration on opposing defenders. He could probably play tackle but doesn’t pay enough attention to the playbook, so is better off being used as a guard just assigned to power the opposition’s pass-rushers.
#4c Ensign Luna
Halo-Female, Spiral-Desiccant
Ensign Luna, a junior navigation officer, will be wearing a special protective shirt during the game. Not that s/he needs protecting: it’s to protect everyone else. Spiral-Desiccants are covered in long body hair that, in response to certain stimuli, erupt into needle-sharp spines. Ensign Luna enjoys playing games, but s/he does not wish to injure anyone so will wear the fitted garment to prevents activation of the spines. Even without them, s/he is still capable of causing some pain: s/he is 8 feet tall and powerfully built, as well as sporting two sharp horns (necessitating a special helmet). S/he has cloven hooves so cannot really play in a skill position. S/he has the size to be a good blocker, but so much size that it can be difficult for the quarterback to see over. S/he will probably work best at right tackle, trampling lanes for the rushers.
#4f Lieutenant (j.g.) Ksetaksa Killhunt
Halo-Female, Avian-Desiccant
Lt. (j.g.) Killhunt is a geologist. Amusing that a member of a species capable of soaring flight should primarily be interested in the ground, perhaps. Not that Lt. Killhunt is an especially amusing sight: s/he is actually rather terrifying with talons fully unfurled, bright train of blood-red feathers splayed, and 18-inch beak clacking ominously. S/he is angling for a promotion given the vacancy in Planetary Sciences and has probably joined the team for that reason; s/he has never showed much interest in sport or group activities otherwise. S/he is not very physically adept and probably not skilful enough to take a starting role; s/he is more likely to be used off the bench as a reserve or feature on special teams. Nonetheless, s/he is capable of surprising speed given how large s/he is, has a big wingspan (of course), and can summon outstanding fury when provoked.
#40 Ecthelion Lumpknuckles
Male, Quasi-Desiccant
A greedy metals broker, Ecthelion was a member of the passenger manifest when the Poseider ran into trouble. Since then he’s proved fairly valuable as a scout for precious materials (though, sadly, unobtainium isn’t his area of expertise). He’s a Quasi, meaning he’s the product of a union between an Anthro-Desiccant and a Subterranean-Desiccant; Quasis are generally trusted by neither of their parent races and it’s not uncommon for them to strike out their own looking to make their fortune. Most Anthro-Desiccants are repulsed by Quasis (Cdr. Dewspark is especially guilty of this) while Subterraneans look up (note, this is the equivalent of ‘looking down on’ for other races) on them as lacking essential life-skills. Ecthelion has some of the physical characteristics of each of his parent races: the height of an Anthro and translucent skin to match, with very mild empathic powers; but the strong build of a Subterranean, with correspondingly poor vision and bushy whiskers. He’s joining the team to try to fit in, but is a little bit awkward, not really finding a role that will offer him much playing time. He’s big enough to play tackle but without the fundamentals.
#41 Ensign Jithiral Lardet
Male, Crag
Ensign Lardet is a junior tactical officer. He also appears to be made entirely out of stone. Crags are silicon-based lifeforms that take the physical shape of humanoids but are made of crystals. Crag babies are quite beautiful but exposure to the elements weathers their exodermic layer; even a relatively young officer like Jithiral is now rough-hewn and coarse to the touch. Though not especially tall, he is obviously extremely heavy and capable of exerting himself with great force. Crags are notorious loners and he’s joined in the team but not really taken part in a lot of the training sessions, so his playing time might be limited to special teams assignments or coming off the bench, as he’s not familiar enough with even the basic playbook Lt. Chiasson has drawn up.
#49 Crewman Gekro Oebrid
Male, Noct-Desiccant
Crewman Oebrid is a crewman in the security department. Though big and strong, he’s a little on the lumbering side, and not the quickest – either across the ground, or to pick up a playbook. So he might not get too much playing time. He is rumored to have mated with Lt. Darkcutter; although strictly speaking officer-enlisted relations are forbidden, Captain Hardbear generally turned a blind eye to such matters. Cdr. Dewspark is more likely to intercede, so if Crewman Oebrid is trying to impress Lt. Darkcutter, he will need to be careful not to get her into trouble.
Defensive line:
#5f Cadet K’salkac Vevkano
Protogyne, Insecto-Desiccant
Cadet Vevkano is a tactical officer candidate from the Academy, taking part in what was meant to be a training mission towards getting ħer field certification. Sħe is very young and shaken by what’s happened, and the rest of the crew have adopted ħer as one of their own. The severance of ħer psychic link to the hive-mind is particularly traumatic for ħer, as protogynes particularly atuned to the collective. Sħe is very visually distinctive, with black legs banded with turquoise stripes, an iridescent silver thorax, and bright turquoise antennae. Ħer wings have been clipped for the purposes of the game. Sħe is among the fastest members of the crew despite her size, with a span of about 8 feet, but the light nature of ħer carapace means sħe’s not a particularly hard hitter. Ħer long limbs enable her to reach up and bat down passes at the line of scrimmage. Sħe has enjoyed playing the game as a distraction from the silence of ħer thoughts.
#5e Archon Jjuuddeerrbbiiddiill
Double-Female, Enigma-Desiccant
Jjuuddeerrbbiiddiill is a magistrate who was on assignment to attend a hearing at a distant colony. Enigma-Desiccants frequently found themselves working in the field of law as they are respected as impartial arbiters. Their immensely long lifespans – though Jjuuddeerrbbiiddiill is only 4000 years old, many of hheerr people live far longer – mean they are generally seen as able to look beyond the petty biases of humanoids. Jjuuddeerrbbiiddiill is around 10 feet tall – as mentioned, sshhee is still fairly young – with a dense double-helix body core, eight limbs, and three eyes. Sshhee is not fast but is probably the single strongest crew-member and hheerr powerful, flexible limbs enable hheerr to grip the ground with incredible force, making hheerr nearly impossible to shift. Hheerr decision to join the team is not surprising, as Enigma-Desiccants are well known for their love of play, games helping to pass the time, of which they have plenty. Enigma-Desiccants also have a strong grasp of rules and social structures, so sshhee took quickly to the game; indeed, the thing sshhee’s having the hardest time understanding is why hheerr position is called ‘nose tackle’ when sshhee doesn’t even have a nose.
#61 Crewman Tuk’rer
Intrinsic Male, Unbonded Symbio-Desiccant
Crewman Tuk’rer is a junior engine technician with (putting it in highly scientific terms) no engine to do junior technician stuff to, and so has joined the team. He looks like he belongs on a football field: around 8 feet tall and built more solidly than a bulkhead. As is common with Unbondeds, he’s somewhat aggressive and reckless, attributes that have only increased since being pulled into a spatial anomaly, meaning he might well never be Bonded. Tragic as this is – it serves him pretty well as a defensive tackle, and he’s come to relish ploughing into blockers and being allowed to hit people as hard as he can. After watching practice, Cdr. Dewspark has few doubts about starting him playing football, but rather severe doubts about stopping him playing football.
#5b Technician Third Grade Basselt Terberis
Male, Crag
Technician Terberis works in the deepest bowels of the engine room. Crags are generally able to easily withstand the severe radiation and temperatures associated with close-Core activity, but even they are not totally unaffected. Terberis’s exterior is yellowish-brown with an oxidized layer. He’s overjoyed at the chance to get out away from all that and into some fresh air (if the canned environment of Hangar Bay #1 really counts as ‘fresh air’) or at least as overjoyed as a stoical Crag is about anything. He’s an edge rusher who enjoys chasing people around the field and tackling them, but is also very strong – he’s a literal pile of rocks – when it comes to grappling with blockers.
#5a “Crewman Jadar Meridian”
“Neuter”, “Auror-Desiccant”
Crewman Jadar Meridian is an Auror-Desiccant with a cobalt-blue metallic skin, who works as soil processing technician in the hydroponics bay; a reserved person, keeping to themselves most of the time, they’re often seen working out in the gym during the night shift, so their joining the team isn’t a huge surprise. Or, correction, Crewman Meridian was all of those things, before Winebalt Basnage, a Sprite-Desiccant assassin, killed them and took on their appearance. None of the crew is able to detect the deception because Auror-Desiccant skin shields empathic sensing, and Crewman Meridian wasn’t well known enough among the rest of the crew for anyone to notice anything amiss; only Rudd and Greystark have their suspicions but neither are inclined to offer the crew any assistance in the matter. Basnage is furious at being in his present situation: he was on his way to assassinate a political leader agitating for rebellion on a foreign colony, and now is literally stuck in another person’s skin. But he has to maintain the ruse or else he will be imprisoned and executed for his many crimes, so he is going along with doing everything Crewman Meridian would, including signing up to play defensive tackle on an interstellar football team!
#4b Grurbokh Puzur-zaggissi
Female, Crag
Like Henoxah, Grurbokh is a Crag female musician, but whereas Henoxah is a revered classical performer, Grurbokh is just a tavern performer. She dreams of being a famous performer like Henoxah, but for the moment she isn’t skilled enough and is still learning how to use her body. At best she’s a rhythm player, clacking along in the background, but unable to control the higher-frequency melodies. Instead she has to rely on the allure of her pretty exterior – pink rocks, glittering with gold veins and a bewitching green-white seam that runs tantalizingly through her mid-section – which send Crag males into frenzies. Her seductive dancing has even been known to induce the occasional premature avalanche from an embarrassed young Crag male. She’s travelling to work at a space bar, and while on board has taken lessons from Henoxah to try to improve her musical skills. An enthusiastic member of the team without a great deal of skill, she’s naturally very strong and so able to put in some powerful tackles, but gets easily confused by complex plays.
Linebackers:
#38 Lieutenant Commander Jed Aleksandr Hammerman
Male, Anthro-Desiccant
Newly promoted to Chief Science Officer, formerly head of the Planetary Sciences division, Lt. Cdr. Hammerman is no geeky scientist. He’s a big, powerful man, who loves leading away missions on exotic new worlds, equally at home rappelling down the inside of a volcano or cutting swathes through a rainforest of sentient vines. The office duties that comes with his promotion are something of an irritation and some physical competition an ideal release. Like most Anthro-Desiccants he’s moderately empathic. He’s close to Cdr. Dewspark and Lt. Cdr. Twinklefeather (how close is a matter of much ship-wide gossip; his being promoted immediately on the former assuming command did little to dampen such rumors) but popular among the wider crew for his gregarious manner, lack of regard for safety regulations, and well-stocked liquor cabinet, which he shares from pretty freely. None of which should make you think him a fool: in fact he’s a tactically sharp defensive captain who’s taken quickly to the game.
#37 Ensign Dahu
Female, Chelo-Desiccant
Ensign Dahu is a pretty young female nurse. Her shell is a beautiful azure color, her moss-green hair buds delightful flowers, and she can move with surprisingly graceful deftness for one of her immense speed. But don’t let the long eyelashes and shapely beak lull you into thinking she won’t be a hard hitting presence on the field. She generally stands on her two hind legs and uses her four upper limbs as arms, making her well-suited to a career as a surgical nurse, and also to being a tricky linebacker who can flatten blockers with her huge size and immense strength, and also have the skill to snag passes.
#3c Lieutenant Dithapelo Maano
Neuter, Halcyon-Desiccant
Like most Halcyons, Lt. Maano comes across as friendly – until you cross them. Then they’ll have you on your back faster than you can blink (assuming you have eyelids; otherwise just … very fast). A junior security officer, Lt. Maano looks like they could be equally at home outside a nightclub door. Or, indeed, lining up at linebacker. The security officers are some of the biggest, strongest, most physically adept players on the team. The Halcyons are some of the biggest, strongest, most physically adept players on the team. So the Halcyon security officer? You might want to run in … the other direction.
#35 Lieutenant Mallos Zaaqa
Male, Halcyon-Desiccant
Lt. Zaaqa is a senior nursing officer. Halcyons physically resembles Nocts with their dark coloration, but have very different temperaments, being much more emotionally expressive. They’re very well suited to nursing: they form empathic bonds with their patients, but are better able to compartmentalize grief than Anthro-Desiccants. Zaaqa’s sturdy build, hitherto used to hold down recalcitrant patients, will here be deployed shrugging off blockers and wrestling down ball-carriers. Naturally he doesn’t really want to hurt anyone but he’s not afraid to put in the big hits when needed, as well as possessing a decent set of hands in coverage. His participation in the team is very obviously driven by a desire to buck up everyone’s morale, though, rather than any particular competitive spirit.
#36 Henoxah Drelalt
Female, Crag
Henoxah is a musician, and a moderately famous one at that. Her instrument is herself: she vibrates, causing the rocks in her body to clack together rhythmically. At high frequencies, she can produce bewitching melodies at intense volumes. She was on her way to serve as artist-in-residence at a conservatoire when on board the Poseider during its abrupt encounter with the anomaly. The team are excited she’s joined in: she’s something of a galactic celebrity and having her play with them quite an honor. Physically, she’s what you’d expect from a Crag: tremendously powerful, but not very skilful or fast. In her role on the team she’s more likely to be assigned to rush the passer or tackle the runner than to drop back into coverage. The male Crags all admire her and may compete for her attention, although she is a bit older than them and unlikely to pay much attention to such predictable displays of male bravado as showing off how big their nether-stones are.
#39 Chief Petty Officer Judwund Kuirgoriengr
Male, Subterranean-Desiccant
A burly male nurse, Chief Kuirgoriengr is a no-nonsense medical technician who brings years of experience. No one knows quite how old he is, but they’re definitely not going to ask him directly. For all his gruffness he’s clearly a skilled technician, familiar with a wide suite of equipment; he seems to regard patients, however, as an unnecessary random factor, risking spoiling his lovely machines. He holds even more contempt for doctors, whom he regards as not half as clever as all that. It was a bit of a surprise to see him sign up for a team sport as he rarely socializes with others, but perhaps he just wants to put in a few big hits as an excuse to fire up some of his medical technology. Like most Subterranean-Desiccants, he’s rather short but very powerfully built; unlike most, he’s clean-shaven (allegedly to hide the gray in his beard, or, according to some junior nurses, to make his scary face even more prominent).
Defensive backs:
#2c Lieutenant Thallen Darkcutter
Female, Noct-Desiccant
Nocts are a splinter race of Anthro-Desiccants: where Anthros are translucent, Nocts are night-black, including their teeth, eyes, and bones. In the ancient past they were much discriminated against, and although today they are theoretically valued members of the Desiccated States, in practice old prejudices die hard. Lieutenant Darkcutter is an ambitious junior watch officer who commands, unsurprisingly, the night shift; she and Commander Dewspark have never seen entirely eye-to-eye, making it surprising she signed up to the team. Perhaps she is just trying to improve her standing among the crew by putting in a good effort – she may not have great hands, but is fast and capable of punishingly hard hits. Or perhaps there is something more sinister at work: she knows Dewspark’s project will fail, but can only criticize her, and even usurp her captaincy, if she first pretends to go along with her at first.
#14 Lieutenant Commander Xian Jie
Neuter, Auror-Desiccant
Lt. Cdr. Xian is the ship’s deputy chief medical officer. Not so long ago so busy they would never have had time for a game of football, now they’re glad of the relief after all the work they’ve put in in the ship’s medical bays. They’re a skilled surgeon, a veteran officer, and in superb athletic shape: long before training for this tournament began they were always to be found running the decks or in the ship’s gym at all hours. Aurors have a reputation as cold and aloof, and even as untrustworthy; their metallic skin, evolved as a defense-mechanism against Anthro-Desiccant empathic powers, prevents their emotions from being read. No one would describe Lt. Cdr. Xian as untrustworthy after all the work they’ve done saving the lives of their crewmates. But cold and aloof – yeah, they don’t radiate friendliness. They should get plenty of playing time at free safety as they have the physicality to tackle and the skills to be a ball-hawk. [Deceased]
#18 Tom Rudd
Male, Sprite-Desiccant
No one knows quite what Tom Rudd is doing on board the Poseider. He seems to be a bit of a wheeler-dealer, professing jack-of-all-trades knowledge of everything from computer systems and cybernetics to cookery and barbering, and always trying to barter with the crew. Such characteristics are typical of Sprite-Desiccants, who physically resemble Anthro-Desiccants except for the luminescent glow of their skin (Tom’s is blue). They are stereotyped as tricksters and many captains refuse to carry them on board their ships, fearing they will be sources of mischief, sowing division amongst the crew or just stealing valuables. Captain Hardbear was above such prejudices; Cdr. Dewspark is largely not, mistrusting Tom and looking to dump him off on the nearest colony world they land on. She doesn’t trust his motives in joining the team, either, although he seems to have a good set of physical skills, with deft hands (for picking locks?), great speed (for outrunning security officers?) and some solid size (in case he finds himself in a jam he can’t talk his way out of with his – literal – silver tongue?). Right now she can’t figure out a way to keep him off the team as he seems to be one of the better players, but she and every security officer on the squad will be keeping an eye on him.
#1c Lieutenant (j.g.) Deithornel
Female, Draco-Desiccant
Dr. Deithornel is part of the ship’s medical crew, but not a ship’s doctor; in fact, until the recent trauma, she had little cause to practise medicine, being more concerned with the cell cultures in her lab. After a long spell of hands-on (or rather claws-on) medical work, she’s now ready for a break, even if it means playing this accursed gamed. Draco-Desiccants are winged, scaly, and have taloned forepaws. She stands 7 feet tall on her hindpaws, and is around 17 feet long taking into account her spiked tail and horns. In the interests of strict sporting fairness she has agreed to have her wings clipped for the duration of games, but even without using them she is capable of jumping to great heights and moving with incredible speed. Her talons (heavily bandaged so as not to burst the ball) may not be the most accurate at catching, which is why she’s on defense, but she’s still a fearsome threat in coverage.
#1d Lieutenant Commander Branywr Aricmarc
Male, Anthro-Desiccant
Not part of the Poseider crew, Lt. Cdr. Aricmarc is a xenoanthropologist and First Contact specialist who was travelling on board en route to a new assignment at an embassy posting. As such he’s more perturbed than most at the situation they find themselves in. Playing the game for him is as much about finding a distraction from the worries of abandoning his post than it is a genuine commitment to the cause of team sports. Like most Anthro-Desiccants he is tall and slender, so perhaps not suited to laying out receivers with powerful hits, but with good enough hands to be disruptive in courage. His acute empathic powers, honed through years of technical specialization, also help him read defenders’ feints and jukes, and he’s very nimble, if not especially fast in terms of a straight foot-race.
#2f Lieutenant Azurisz
Female, Avian-Desiccant
You probably saw this one coming from the other side of the galaxy. A literal ball-hawk??? In fact, make any derogatory references to Lt. Azurisz’s plumage and she’ll happily bare her talons or demonstrate the keenness of her beak, so best keep such jokes quiet. A science officer developing cybernetic bio-modifications in her laboratory, Azurisz is a member of the Avian-Desiccant species. Her bright plumage (in her case, purple patterned with red stripes, and a fire-orange underbelly, with dark blue tail-feathers) will be on display; her powers of flight, will not, having sportingly agreed to have her wings clipped for the game. Grounded, she’s a little clumsier and despite her large size, standing over 7 feet tall, deceptively light in frame owing to her hollow-lattice bone structure, but still very skilful at reading the ball in the air and moving to cover it.
#2a Chief Petty Officer Leylan Pasurıj
Female, Subterranean-Desiccant
CPO Pasurıj is an experienced NCO whose exact job specification is a mystery to the Chief Engineer, the senior staff, and the CO herself. Chief Pasurıj is always just kind of … there. Something needs fixing, and in the time it’s taken to summon a repair crew, Chief Pasurıj has come along and mended it, all the while cursing into her beard that it would never have broken if it had been installed properly in the first place. Perennially covered in engine grease, her decision to sign up for the team was something of a surprise, but after leading the repair efforts on the ship, no one could begrudge her some R&R. Her role on the team is likely to be similarly mercurial, popping up as a rover in coverage, a nickel- or dime-back, or on either side of the ball on special teams. And if the stadium scoreboard should break down, you can bet you’ll find her fixing it while complaining that whoever set it up didn’t know what they were doing.
#15 Lieutenant (j.g.) Askar Satarov
Male, Subterranean-Desiccant
Lt. (j.g.) Satarov is a brilliant engineer with a specialism in Hyper-Drive Mechanics. The Hyper-Drive is currently off-line. So… he has enough free time to play a little football. Like most Subterraneans he’s short, stocky, hairy, and grumpy. He’s not very fast, but he’s able to get low and hit with power, making him a useful presence in the backfield or charging down the field on special teams. Probably not a starter but he doesn’t mind that, as just sitting on the sidelines of the game is enough diversion from the silence of his beloved Engine Core.
#25 Crewman Zamleg Grarraddegg
Male, Gus
Crewman Grarraddegg is a Gus botanical technician: essentially, he tends the ship’s arboretum. Coming from the jungle planet of Gus, that comes pretty naturally to him. Gus have six immensely long limbs, but they’re mammalian, not insectoid. Most have short mottled fur for camouflage, but on board a ship that just makes them stand out. Crewman Grarraddegg is considered alien even by open-minded Federation standards, and joining the team is for him as much about feeling part of the group as it is winning. Unfortunately, while very strong, he’s not really fast enough to play all that much, so will probably be limited to special teams roles.
Long snapper:
#33 Major Jakab Szilveszter
Male, Subterranean-Desiccant
Subterraneans don’t normally work in the Diplomatic Corps as they are a fairly undiplomatic people: straightforward and honest, but poor at bargaining and negotiation. Major Szilveszter is an unusual exception, but it makes more sense when you consider he’s a military attaché. He was en route to a disarmament conference where he was to provide technical details to the assembled delegates, all while muttering into his whiskers that this bunch of peaceniks would never solve anything. Ironically, it took all of Cdr. Dewspark’s diplomatic skills to deal with him once he signed up to play: as a fairly senior officer – his rank is equivalent to that of a Lt. Cdr. – he demanded an important role, but did not have the skill set for one. Eventually they found a place for him as the team snapper. He’s very powerfully built but a bit undersized to play as a regular offensive lineman, but after much practise developed an effective long-snapping routine, likening the action to the action of a rifled muzzle.
Kicker:
#c Lieutenant Commander Sundew Twinklefeather
Female, Anthro-Desiccant
Lt. Cdr. Twinklefeather is the ship’s senior operations officer. She’s in charge of command-and-control, including management of the ship’s computer systems. She’s also Commander Dewspark’s closest friend and longest-serving comrade. She has severe doubts about the wisdom of her friend’s decision to stay and play in the tournament – doubts that, as empaths, they cannot conceal from one another – but has decided to join in, partly to back her old friend, partly because with so many of the systems she runs currently down for repair she has something of a surfeit of time. With her slender frame and unusually petite stature for an Anthro-, she is hardly suited to the physicality of football, so she has been assigned to kick, which she will do with great accuracy but little power.
Punter:
#9 Specialist Second Grade Joaquin Ferraz Nakamura
Male, Meta-Desiccant
A brusque young engineering NCO, Specialist Nakamura has generally kept to himself since coming on board. There was surprise when he asked about the football team, and disappointment when he found out what kind of football. Specialist Nakamura is an aficionado of the game of football i.e. futbol, soccer, but knows little of the strange rules by which this primitive race of aliens play their variant of the game. As such, the position he’s best suited for is punter, hoofing massive kicks up the field. He’s also the kickoff specialist as he has a bigger boot than Lt. Cdr. Twinklefeather, and is even capable of some soccer-style trickery when an onside-kick is needed. But he finds the whole experience slightly disappointing as he much prefers the lively game of soccer to the constant interruptions of football, and is prone to losing concentration. He’s tall and strapping like most Metas so can put in a decent tackle if needed.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my scorers: Y. Given how weak the team is on offense, I am OK with you making a good percentage of our scores defensive/ST scores.
RP injuries to my players: Y. However, the team have advanced medical equipment so should not even be forced to leave the game. If you have an RP idea involving a longer term injury contact me, otherwise assume my players will be healed by the next game.
Suspend my players: N. Most players are military officers and should be able to maintain a modicum of discipline. Contact me if you have an RP idea, though, and I may permit it.
Godmod stuff: No shit Sherlock. My RP is itself a massive godmod: therefore, it just doesn’t work for you, I’m sympathetic to that, and you may ignore all the alien aspects to my roster and simply play against a team you perceive as human, using my character names.
