Overview
The 16th-ranked Phoenixes are revamped and ready to go after failing to make the Round of 16 at World Bowl 40 in Karditan. The quarterback corps has been completely replaced and is headlined by Trent Goff, a proficient pocket passer who has the mobility and efficiency to roll out, either planned or improvised. He will be joined in the backfield by speed back Dexter George; the DGL MVP has typically carried a high workload and will enjoy a bit more breathing room thanks to the increased passing threat this year, as well as his tandem with "pocket rocket" power back Mark Mayfield and the powerful three-quarters-back Bryce Alford. The wide receiving corps returns slot receiver Mateus Eldridge and proficient route runner Kevin Alés, with the young burner Andre Michel and slant/hook specialist Chris Cardona joining. The offensive line remains largely the same, providing experience as they protect Goff.

The quick, blitz-heavy defense features in front defensive Rookie of the Year Prince Rose, joining veteran Allan Tolliver; captains Seth Ružička and Ben Dorman joining breakout star Anthony Ventrella at linebacker; the secondary returns cornerbacks Tasunka Coleman and Jaxx Underwood, and overall lack quickness, often depending on zone and contain coverage to prevent getting burned by faster receivers. Javon Reid returns as a dynamic kick and punt returner. Kieran Conley is a very accurate placekicker, automatic within about 45 yards, but will fail at length much more frequently than at direction.

The team returns much of their coaching staff, including head coach Gorka Bielsa of the Bosmond Bears; he brings his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Shaun Selwyn and Thomas Goff (Trent's father), to work with the young quarterback. The philosophy is aggressive with regards to attempting fourth down conversions, particularly around midfield and near the goal line; in between, Bielsa will more frequently opt for the assured points that Conley presents. The Phoenixes tend to start strong, but can have trouble both in coming back from deficits and from "game management" with a small lead; the team's future success will depend on building the experience and composure to finish games strong.

Defensive Formation: 4-3-3 (with some 4-4-2)
Style Modifier: +3 - pass-oriented, with a lot of option plays and play action, high-risk high-reward mentality
Team Name: Phoenixes | Trigram: DEL | Demonym: Delaclav

Coaches
Head coach: Fred Smith
Offensive Coordinator: Sean Rodriguez
Defensive Coordinator: Roy Grey
The coaching team likes offense, a lot. They play a very offensive game. Expect the, to throw the ball a lot all the time. They believe a lead is never safe and you should always try to stack up the points. Fred Smit(, recently took the job at the very successful Akers State. As far as the Coordinators go, they are both coaches at the college level, who specialize in their selective categories.

Offensive Formation: Shotgun, Singleback
Offensive style of play: Run and Shoot
Defensive Formation: 4-3, 4-2-5

The Offense

Quarterbacks
Jack Nelson
Micah Wilson
Jack, the most well known quarterback in Northwest Kalactin, has a big arm and can heave the ball downfield very well. He is considered on of the smartest quarterbacks to ever play the game, and attended Akers State University. Micah Wilson is a master of reading the blitz, however is young, and is too raw to start internationally.

Running Backs
James Gilbert
Doug Young
Hunter Martin
Many running backs from the country tend to be ones that can catch the ball also, because of the nations emphasis on passing. Gilbert and Young definitely follow that model of player, being speedy backs that will catch the ball out of the backfield. Martin will look to slide into the 3rd down back spot that Gane Dobson left, and do well at it.

Wide-outs
Jordan Williams
Devin Reece
Davis Erickson
Andrew Walters
Aaron Hepp
Zachary McIntrye
Jordan Houge
Robert Rivera
The WR is sometimes considered one of the, if not most important player on the field in Northwest Kalactin. Most of them are speedy red zone threats, that can burn you over the top. Kalactanian WRs try to create big plays on the field, however, they do run many high risk routes that can result in quite a few interceptions.

Tight Ends
Sam Bruner
Dylan Curry
Teddy Wilson
Everyone knew that something was special about Sam Bruner from when he was little. He was always the strongest, fastest, biggest and tallest player on the field. He could play almost any position and excel at it. Bruner is a 6-6 tight end that is possibly a top 3 player on this offense. He is a great receiver, blocker and athlete. Most TEs try to help put with the passing attack in Kalactin, but with Bruner, you can do really anything. Wilson and Curry are suitable backups, who both play a utility role on the team.

Offensive Line:
Tackles
Steven Bell
Anthony Reed
Alex Coty
Cody Douglass
Guards
Steve Johnson
Christopher Torres
Michael Schrite
Jeremiah Harvey
Center
Malik King
The offensive line has one of the most important jobs in football, in Northwest Kalactin the main job for them is protecting the quarterback. The offensive line of the Kalactanians is a very large one, with their smallest lineman being the 6-2, 300 pound Malik King.]

The Defense
D-Line
Peter Angeh (Edge Rusher)
Trey Seals (Edge Rusher)
Travis Reynolds (Edge Rusher)
Matt Sparks (Tackle)
Gus Smith (Tackle)
TJ Taylor (Tackle)
Tony Reid (Edge Rusher)
Karsten Brown (Tackle)
The D-line for the Kalactanians is considered the most important part of the field on defense. Nothing makes the coaches of the team happier than watching an opposing quarterback get sacked. TJ Taylor enters his prime as the best lineman in the nation, racking up a record number of 18 sacks during the Kalactanian regular season.

Linebackers
Zack Swartz (Outside/EDGE)
Kaleb Patterson (MLB)
Bryson Scott (Outside/DB)
Sam Martin (MLB)
DJ Hunter (Outside/EDGE)
Deion Kessler (MLB)
AJ Tyler (Outside/DB)
Davonte Allen (Outside/DB)
Many of the linebackers here, such as Davonte Allen, can also play at defensive back. Most linebackers from Kalactin are smaller than the ones from other nations, this is mainly because the Kalactanians try to prevent an air attach. The best players from this group are Zack Schwartz and Davonte Allen.

Defensive Back:
Cooper Selby (Free Safety)
Darios Johnson (Strong Safety)
Trey Wafford (Nickel Back)
Shane Tucker (Strong Safety)
Sean Wick (Dime Back)
Austin Louis (Free Safety)
Zack Rogers (CB)
DJ Harvey (CB)
The defensive backs of Northwest Kalactin are usually small, athletic ones. Cooper Selby, probably the best defensive player on the team, is the main Free Safety for the Kalactanians. Most of the players in this category are built to defend passes by interrupting the receiver, not the pass. Cooper Harvey, despite his size, has a large amount of raw talent, and will use to to get an edge on the receiver.

Special Teams

Jason Sanders
Josh Willsonton

Jack Mackenzie

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ABANHFLEFT
National American football team

Abanhfleft returns to the World Bowl for another shot at the title in its 40th iteration. The less said about World Bowl XXXIX, the better.

BASIC INFORMATION
Name of nation
: Democratic Republic of Abanhfleft
Demonym: Fleftic
Official history: This will be Abanhfleft's 13th time playing the World Bowl after the disaster that was the crash of Air Abanhfleft Flight 5116 in Electrum. This is Abanhfleft's 16th time participating in the World Bowl overall.
Team colors: Blue, orange, and green
Style modifier: +2. Abanhfleft has adopted a new, more conservative attacking style of play under new coach Marius Magnussen.

HOME STADIUM
Image
The Amado Isauro-Imponte Garden in Kammala, Garufaloe Province, home of the Garufaloe Cobras of the FNLAF, will be playing host to the Fleftic national gridiron team's home matches. It has an official capacity of 51,000 people, but attendance regularly exceeds that figure thanks to a rabid fanbase, and people preferring to stand up or sit on the stairs whenever capacity is filled.

The presence of this sport is really low in this country. Only a few clubs are there playing this sport. We hope to get a decent result from this tournament. Even a single victory would be considered a blessing for this nation.

About The Offense: There is a completely new coaching staff, and the hope is that this will lead to more imaginative play-calling. Prior coach Marvin Dineen was often criticized for being too boring and predictable. Brain Scanlon returns as quarterback and with not many changes in the “skill” positions, you have to wonder just how different the new staff will be. A couple new starting tackles won’t make life any easier for Scanlon.

About The Defense: Massive change occurred on the defensive side of the ball, which is surprising to some, because we haven’t been too bad on that side. Still, players were getting older, and there needed to be a move to a younger squad eventually, so the time was probably right for that.

Chromatika Gridiron Football Team

Nickname: The Iron Legion
Head Coach: Eustace Hampton Jr., 57
Offensive Coordinator: Milo Jones-Smith, 45
Defensive Coordinator: Logan Gwinerva, 44
Special Teams Coordinator: Niles Crescent, 41
Style Modifier: -3
Home Stadium: The Capitalizt Dome, Chromia, Chromatika (Cap. 144,000)

OFFENSE
Offensive Coordinator: Milo Jones-Smith, Chromatik City Cyan
Assistant Coordinator: Naia Curentino, Felswyr STate University Firehawk
Offensive Philosophy: The Chromatik Iron Legion employs a possession-based philosophy, utilizing two backs, two receivers, and a tight end in an attempt to string together long drives that eat up a lot of the clock. With the inclusion of Sarai Gwenderyn at the helm, the team is a bit speedier now, but it's still a chunky team.
Players: - Starters in Italics

Quarterbacks
#02 - Kenner Jones - 27 years old. Qet Lynx. A burly quarterback at 6 ft 3 inches, 240 pounds, Jones isn't all that fast but can do sneaks with impunity. Decently accurate, but the accuracy decreases with distance. Offensive Captain.
#03 - Sarai Gwenderyn - 20 years old. Feslwyr State University Firehawk. Quick, accurate thrower, with good field vision and a tendency of creating big plays.
#18 - Jill Kieran - 23 years old. Chromatik City Cyan. A more traditional pocket passer with decent speed, prefers to throw deep or be on the edge looking to cause trouble.

Backs
#24 - Kimberly Fowler - 27 years old. Brisara Juggernaut. A bit faster and nimble, can produce if line sets the edge.
#22 - Amber Feeley - 25 years old. Qet Lynx. Only fullback on the squad - good blocker and decent route-runner. Always looking forward to get to the first would-be-tackler.
#26 - James Morreau - 33 years old. Alnio Pirate. A third-down back with sure hands who knows how to run a route or get short yardage.
#35 - Victoria Kaiser-Williams - 22 years old. Chromatik City Cyan. A speedster who can juke around people, but rarely take people on.

Receivers
#11 - Alessandra Mio - 22 years old. Felswyr State University Firehawk. 6 ft 5 inches tall, has massive reach. A Quarterback needs to only get the ball near her, she'll do the rest.
#18 - Kern Sayan - 26 years old. Chromatik City Cyan. 5 ft 11 inches, precise route-runner. Not very physically imposing.
#81 - Pouncey Jones - 28 years old. Qet Lynx. 6 ft 3 inches, short-yardage receiver with decent yards after the catch.
#83 - Vance Limeau - 27 years old. Deprí Lanar Turtle. 6 ft 2 inches. The speedy one of the group, has the agility to make sharp cuts. Also returns kicks.
#84 - Cameron Pills-Otts - 24 years old. Knetyohai Icebreaker. 5 ft 4 inches. Mostly used for end-arounds and screen passes, has great vision. Also returns punts.

Tight Ends
#88 - Niles Gwivern - 21 years old. Felswyr State University Firehawk. 6 ft 5 inches tall, 260+ pounds. Can block, catch, do it all. An absolute unit.
#97 - Kathryn Nance - 27 years old. Qet Lynx. 6 ft 2 inches tall, more of a pure blocker of a tight end.

Offensive Tackles
#72 - Jack Mance - 30 years old. Qet Lynx. Burly, muscular, and can generate lots of push in the run game.
#74 - Bernard Perry - 23 years old. Staramara Angel. Has surprising agility and is often called to pull out to block up front on screen plays.
#62 - Giles Candy - 27 years old. Alnio Pirate. Has soft hands, can be used as a sixth offensive lineman in situations and catch sneak passes.
#59 - Lars Kendrick - 27 years old. Brisara Juggernaut. The biggest player on the team, is surprisingly athletic.

Offensive Guards
#66 - Pomeroy Lockhart - 22 years old. Felswyr State University Firehawk. Leader of the offensive line, generates tremendous push and possesses solid vision.
#53 - Cierra Oscar - 27 years old. Chromatik City Cyan. Blindside blocker for the Iron Legion, decent find.
#60 - Mea Loom - 26 years old - Alnio Pirate. Solid all-around player.
#73 - Amos Lard - 30 years old - Knetyohai Icebreaker. Decent veteran.

Centers
#71 - Mikel Kingston - 20 years old - Felswyr State University Firehawk. Possesses solid fundamentals and good vision.
#52 - Kaia James - 21 years old - Felswyr State University Firehawk. Also long snapper for field goals.
#56 - Anderson Keel - 28 years old - Alnio Pirate. Emergency backup, more of a streetball player.

DEFENSE
Defensive Coordinator: Logan Gwinerva, Qet Lynx
Assistant Coordinator: Kasen Harrowitz, Felswyr State University
Defensive Philosophy: The Iron Legion uses a Base 4-3, with pressing safeties that rely on cornerbacks to play on an island. It is those cornerbacks that will determine if the team succeeds. Chromatika is strong against the run and the long pass, but can be bested by intermediate or short passes. The Firehawks absolutely shine here.
Players: Starters in Italics

Defensive Ends
#60 - Jill Lia - 21 years old - Felswyr State University Firehawk. A pure speedy edge rusher who has an endless motor.
#65 - Kitty Kio - 20 years old - Felswyr State University Firehawk. A speedy edge rusher who uses agility to get around offensive linemen.
#55 - Nevin Iserton - 26 years old - Chromatik City Cyan. A run-stuffer.
#58 - Vilaya Pince - 27 years old - Qet Lynx. Decent in coverage for a lineman.

Defensive Tackles
#74 - Bernard Perry - 23 years old - Chromatik City Cyan. Agile, mobile, quick.
#66 - Mic Carleigh - 32 years old - Deprí Lanar Turtle. A smaller player who tries to exploit gaps to make plays.
#79 - Parry Mioto - 25 years old - Alnio Pirate. Runs well, Has a bit of a problem getting past people.
#62 - Ronald Mimisimi - 27 years old. Deprí Sanar Battalion. Thrives on contact.

Outside Linebackers
#44 - Cara Setri - 23 years old - Staramara Angel. Loves to rush from the edge or drop into coverage, as is needed.
#42 - Randy Mett - 27 years old - Brisara Juggernaut. More of a cover linebacker.
#41 - Diton Mien - 29 years old - Deprí Lanar Turtle. A run stopper.

Middle Linebackers
#59 - Mi-Hyeon Park - 20 years old - Felswyr State University Firehawk. Dictates the defense. Tackling machine. Decent coverage linebacker. Defensive Captain.
#40 - Nolan Marr - 30 years old - Qet Lynx. Veteran presence in the locker room, solid all-around.

Strong Safeties
#37 - Candice Jones - 23 years old - Qet Lynx. Hugs the line of scrimmage on almost every play, coming across on run support most of the time. Decent in coverage but not special.
#39 - Mike Jeremy - 27 years old - Chromatik City Cyan. A cover safety.

Free Safeties
#25 - Niles Mikaela-Jones - 30 years old - Alnio Pirate. A cover safety who sometimes comes across on blitzes.
#24 - Vi Nia-Kaid - 22 years old - Felswyr State University Firehawk. Has long reach and specializes in coverage.

Cornerbacks
#21 - Nikolai Dimitrov - 23 years old - Deprí Lanar Turtle. 6 ft 5 inches. Sticks to his man like glue, uses long arms to break up completions. Perfectionist.
#29 - Paul Mattieu - 20 years old - Felswyr State University Firehawk. 6 ft 3 inches. Plays a bit more aggressively for the ball.
#48 - Larry Oyama - 27 years old - Staramara Angel. Nickel back, plays soft coverage while looking at the eyes of the Quarterback at all times.
#33 - Rowena Pillar - 26 years old - Brisara Juggernaut. An understudy who has solid fundamentals.
#38 - Whitney Mowa - 29 years old - Deprí Sanar Battalion. Fast. Tackles well. Needs to learn how to cover.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Special Teams Coordinator: Niles Crescent, Brisara Juggernaut
Assistant Coordinator: Vera James, Felswyr State University
Special Teams Philosophy: A kicker should never miss. Play for field position. Solid fundamentals. The Iron Legion doesn't do much trickery - but is very good at coverage and at kicking.
Players: - Starters in Italics

Kicker
#06 - Sara McAllister - 19 years old - Felswyr State University Firehawk. Rarely misses within 40 yards, but lacks range - her career long is a 52 yarder.

Punter
#12 - Nellie Katt - 20 years old - Felswyr State University Firehawk. Directional punter specializing in coffin corners. Not very good at long punts, but can drop them in.

Fight breaks out at Phoenixes camp days before opener
Practice-ending brawl sparks questions as revamped squad struggles to click

CATHERINA -- Representatives of the Delaclava national gridiron team have confirmed reports that Tuesday's training camp practice at the Delaclava National Athletic Complex was ended early after several players instigated a team-wide fight, in which punches were thrown and one player was evaluated for a concussion after the incident.

Wide receiver and offensive co-captain Kevin Alés addressed the situation generally to a video call press pool several hours after reports surfaced. He assured that there were no long-lasting issues within the squad, attributing the dust-up to "growing pains". "Honestly, we've got a team of guys who haven't played together, coming off a really competitive DGL season. There's still some hot blood involved. This happens, it's normal... We're going to address it in-house, move on and be better."

A specific cause of the fight has not been identified; however, pundits have speculated that some of the coaching staff selections would lead to concerns, real or imagined, about favoritism and an unwillingness to fully utilise the talent on the roster. Many critical remarks have been made anonymously with respect to Bosmond Bears quarterback Trent Goff, who is joined by his head coach Gorka Bielsa, his offensive coordinator Shaun Selwyn, and his quarterback coach and father Thomas Goff. One such comment claimed, "They're not here to win ballgames. They're here to run their own show." Another said, "The guy can't or won't communicate. He's in his own world, or he might just be stupid."

The coaching staff is generally filled with personnel from Bielsa's Bosmond Bears as well as the Corcorran Hammers, the latter particularly on the defensive side. But other selections have been made to pair star players with their coaches - such as Coleport Jazz running backs coach Henry Rollins with the Jazz's DGL MVP Dexter George, and Laurelum Tigers wideouts coach Jeff Beasley with Tigers receivers Mateus Eldridge and Andre Michel. One opinion on these selections: "They don't want to figure out who the best guys are. They're just playing their guys and hoping it works out."

Bielsa declined comment on the in-practice brawl, simply saying "we'll work it all out". But he strenuously defended his coaching selections: "We've got 53 guys who all have a role to play, who we need to make an impact. We can't just start at square one, we're bringing some familiarity into the room and onto the field.

"No one's playing favorites, and if guys are thinking that, and saying that without putting a name on it, that's pathetic. There's no place for that in our locker room."

Perhaps what all the team can agree is that the team's chemistry leaves plenty to be desired as the Phoenixes get ready to kick off World Bowl 41 with a home game against Mapletish, at the Sullivan Stadium in Quinniville. Delaclava will play through a double round-robin that also includes Newmanistan, Northwest Kalactin, and Sword Island, with the hopes of making the final 16 in Chromatika, just somewhat north of Delaclava.

Bielsa expressed the bright side of facing the unheralded and unranked Mapletish, given the uncertainty of the team morale: "You never want to take a team lightly, but I'd be lying if I said I weren't glad we aren't starting with Newmanistan. It's the start of the season, you get in there and face a team you should beat, let the guys work through some adversity a little bit. If we want to go where we want to go in this tournament, they don't have any other choice.

"There's nothing that brings a football team together like figuring out how to win a game."

Delaclava looks to rebound from a World Bowl 40 in which they failed to make it to Karditan, finishing 6-4 in Group E after a loss to Drawkland, where a win would have seen the Phoenixes advance. The Phoenixes also dropped games to Chromatika, HUElavia, and Pridnestrovia - upset losses which Alés acknowledges the team must avoid.

"Consistency is key," the wideout explained. "When we're more skilled than a team, we have to be more prepared as well. When you stop controlling those games, you stop controlling your fate and you may not like what happens."

Although the quarterback crew is entirely revamped, following the international retirement of Brian Mathis and the emergence of Goff, skill players such as George, Alés, Eldridge, and Roddy Carter remain, with reinforcements coming from power halfback Mark Mayfield, "three-quarters-back" Bryce Alford, and receivers Andre Michel and Chris Cardona. The defense remains largely untouched, returning veterans such as DE Allan Tolliver, LB Seth Ružička and Ben Dorman, and CB Tasunka Coleman and Jaxx Underwood, while adding young stars DT Prince Rose and OLB Anthony Ventrella.

"We have all the pieces of a winning formula," Alés asserted. "And no one's got it all figured out Week 1. We're just going to keep working and growing, and find that formula before everyone else does."

The player who was reportedly evaluated for a concussion was not named, nor has an injury report been released for the Mapletish game that would indicate who the player was.

Lessons learned from World Bowl training camp

Image
Banijan defenders pose at training camp

KIGATI, HANGAZA REGION- Up north we went, to follow the Serpent Eagles. The national team, for the second tournament in a row, will play all of its home games at the Stadium of the Restoration. It's a special venue. It holds a great place in the hearts of fans of either code of football in Banija, gridiron or association. But even though all the home games will be at the Capitol again, the Olympic Committee wanted to have a training camp site outside of Busukuma. And well outside of Busukuma. By a small, picturesque town.

It would not be beneficial to the national team for them to be switching sites every week for four weeks, of course. So, the Serpent Eagles decided to go to the picturesque town of Kigati, in the central part of the Hangaza Region, and have camp at Lake Alexandre State. Named after Lake Alexandre, who is named after the late Quebecois monarch, King Alexandre IV. Beautiful campus, big football campus. About half of the practices were open to the public, and fans came in good numbers. The highest attendance was the final day of training camp, where they had their green and white scrimmage(aka equivalent of a CFB Spring game). They had that away from the practice fields, and at the actual campus stadium, attracting around 23,000 ticketed supporters(tickets were free, although you had to get them in advance).

We, of course, were at training camp every single day. What did we learn? What insights did we gain on the Serpent Eagles? World Bowl XL was an unfettered success for this national team. Finally breaking our semifinal curse in this tournament(fifth time's the charm, eh?), Cassadaigua grinded us into the ground, earning a 7-3 win. Thomas Hall said that 'great strides' had been made for the Serpent Eagles at that tournament, and that he expected the team to build on it.

Now, before we go for our lessons, just know this caveat- training camp is exciting for everybody. We all know it. Everybody's fresh, everybody's healthy, everybody looks fit and pumped and ready to go. We all have hope, right? Without further ado!

Look for some wildcat creativity from our offense

A few interesting play concepts from the green and white scrimmage. Chinweuba Jelan taking a number of snaps in a wildcat formation. Kuenda Sello took a few wildcat snaps as well. We spoke with Offensive Coordinator Mamadi Diene about it. "Look, we have a number of great offensive weapons on this team." He told us. "You've seen what they can both do on the field. Jelan had a NSCF playoff game where he had a throwing, rushing, receiving, and special teams touchdown. It'd be a failure on us, as an offensive coaching staff, if we didn't use everything in our power to get him going."

"So we have different packages for different guys. Sello is particularly explosive out of that formation as well. It keeps the defense honest, and it keeps them guessing, and gives us an extra blocker at the line of scrimmage. We're going to get Jelan the football in the open field." When asked if Kah would take snaps in a wildcat at some point during the tournament, Diene said he would 'never say never', but that specific scenario was unlikely.

Saihou Fadika is embracing his role as the team's #1 cornerback

It's the biggest question on defense. Our defense was elite in World Bowl XL. They led us to 13 consecutive wins, and played their tails off in the Final, only allowing one touchdown. Unfortunately, the Cassadaigua defense was slightly better, as they only allowed a field goal. But is what it is. This is Fadika's first opportunity to take the #1 corner spot. His former college teammate, Ensa Faye, will occupy the #2 corner spot. Faye, of course, is just 23 years old. While a very talented cornerback, he's coming off his rookie season in Banija's domestic gridiron league, and he's never played at this level before.

So certainly- our front seven is our strength here, and our cornerbacks are going to be tested. They're going up against strong receivers here in camp, like Jelan and Kah, to help strengthen their game. Fadika is talking a big game, though. "I'm ready for the challenge." He told reporters. "I love challenging myself, and I want to go up against the best wideouts the game has to offer. And there are some very talented wide receivers in this group. We're going to be challenged, but we will rise to it."

If our corners can handle themselves in man coverage this World Bowl, then our defense will have so much more flexibility in its playcalling and adaptability. But if not? Then we could be in for a long, long tournament- and not one that ends in Chromatika, either.

Nobody's talking about next tournament's QB Battle

Chineze v. Chibuzo. The winner of that QB battle will be the national team quarterback for the next generation. And... Nobody's talking about it. Which makes sense. This team feels as if they have a legitimate shot to win it now. The opportunities in the present are far too great to worry about the potential possibilities down the line.

It could be a distraction. So far, it isn't. "Look, QB evaluation is key." Thomas Hall said. "On the national team level, you can never have too many quarterbacks. It's the most important position in sports. But I'm not all that worried about our backup position right now- both Chineze and Chibuzo can play ball. Jawara though- what a talent. He's our key to win a title. He's a leader. A veteran." And any other questions asked on the topic circled back to that- Jawara being the man to lead the Serpent Eagles to the promised land.

Seems as if that battle will have to be settled some time from now. But Jawara- the captain, the all worldly talent, undisputed leader of the Serpent Eagles, desperately wants to bring the title home. "I've won everything I can win." He told us. "The NSCF, the GFLB, the Champions Bowl- this is the last thing I am shooting for." And if he brings it home, well, he will be a hero. Many gridiron fans feel as if this title should've been in Banija before the other ones in other sports. Alas, it hasn't happened.

And now the games are coming! The squad will fly out to Esportiva to face the Appalachian Nation. Can the Serpent Eagles get off to a 1-0 start?

At the New England World Bowl team's headquarters in Liberated Framingham, two members of management are talking in an office.

One of them says to the other, "I just got an email from one of the tournament organizers saying they don't have our roster. I thought you were going to submit it yesterday."

The other one replies, "I'm working on it. The power was out for three days after that big wind storm we had over the weekend, and I am still getting caught up."

"Okay, but they need our roster so they can make sure we're following regulations about how many players we have, and for media coverage. Pre-game shows are going to have nothing to talk about if we don't tell them who is on the team. This is embarrassing. People are going to think we've lost all our organizational skills since liberation."

"Yes, I am going to draw up the final roster this afternoon and submit that as soon as I can. Things have just been crazy the last couple of days because the power was out. And it's not like things were organized under the Nazis. Maybe you are too young to remember it, but we had blackouts that went on for a week because Schultz and Lurray would argue over who was responsible for maintaining the power lines. That's what happens when you have four different agencies that are all supposed to do the same thing. Nazis aren't organized. They're just a bunch of angry stuffed shirts whose parents wouldn't let them eat fluffernutters, and they take it out on everyone."

"Fluffernutters aren't even good..."

"Get out!"

(OOC: I'll try to get a roster posted soon. My home stadium is the same as last World Bowl.)

South Newlandian roster for World Bowl 41

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my scorers: Yes
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes
Godmod Injuries to my players: Yes, but please do message me beforehand.
Suspend my players: Probably, but please do message me beforehand.
Godmod suspension events: No
Godmod other events: Yes, but please do message me beforehand.
Style mod: -2

Also, as a general thing: This team is not that good. When I claim that a player is good, at something or in general, that means they are good for being on this team; mostly made up of amateur players and a bunch of guys from try-outs. They aren’t a terrible team, but don’t expect any star players here. The only players that might be good for a roster spot on a real WB team are Valentine, Archer, Rush, Melendez and Farmer.

Uniforms:

Credit goes to the excellent kit maker Saint Kanye

Stadium:

Elephant Field (7.700)
Loacated a bit outside Elephant Valley, this small stadium is the biggest South Newlandia has to offer. Without a roof, it is open to the elements of both wind and rain.

Coaching staff:

Head coach: Robert Victorino (Drawkland, 52)
Victorino formerly played in the Gridiron League of Drawkland, most notably as the linebacker for the Waxton Pilots. He decided to move to coaching early in his career after an injury, including jobs as linebackers coach or defensive coordinator at various positions with colleges and pro teams in Drawkland. This will be his first head coaching gig, and he'll call the defense and make the game situation calls. He's a conservative as a coach, doesn't want to take a lot of risks, fitting the Elephants’ scheme. Also, being 52 as a Drawkian is like being in your late thirties normally.

Offensive coordinator: Corbin Hunt (38)
Hunt will be responsible for the offensive play calling. He emphasizes a strong run game (most likely, a decent bit more than 50% of plays will be runs), and usually avoids trick-plays. He’s also extremely conservative on fourth down. Due to his play calling, all running backs will see some carries, and most likely the fullbacks as well. When it comes to passing, he usually plays short routes; but that’s partially because of the passer he works with.

Defensive coordinator: Jonny Ferry (35)
Ferry will work together with Victorino for the defense. Together, they will be running a 3-4 defense, utulizing a nickel back more often than most teams, and bringing blitz less often than most teams. Most defensive playcalls will be zone defense. The idea is a bend-but-don’t-break defense solid against the pass.

Special teams coordinator: Ian Careful (41)
Careful will take responsibility for the Special teams, and like the other parts of the coaching team, he is rather conservative. Don’t expect any trick plays; but he and the entire coaching team emphasize good tackling. All in all, the Special Teams are a solid unit for the Elephants, probably the best of the three units they have.

OFFENSE: (main starters in bold)

Quarterbacks:
QB1: #7 Robert Stein (24)
QB2: #11 Taylor Lovell (28)
QB3: #9 Leandro Ho (29)
Stein is a pocket-passing quarterback without much mobility, a strong arm, or much general talent at all. Because of that, the Elephants will be running a rather traditional offense, with a strong run game and short passes. Don’t even think about the alternatives, they aren’t any better.

Running Backs:
RB1: #33 Giovanni Read (28)
RB2: #26 Diego Holland (25)
RB3: #49 Mark Power (23)
These are the guys that will do most of the lifting for the Elephants. Read will be the main back, being one of the better players on this offense, with a general talent to read defenses and see lanes and blocks easily. Holland is the main alternative, with a similar set-up, although he is a bit quicker, but less strong. Power will be the power back for short yardage situations, often utilized as a third down back.

Fullbacks:
FB1: #25 Mark Downs (21)
FB2: #38 Simon Plummer (27)
Downs is a pretty solid fullback that will get quite a few carries. Similar to Power, he is pretty decent at getting first downs; and as he is one of the younger talents on the roster, he has time to improve.

Tight Ends:
TE1: #44 Dhruv Valentine (23)
TE2: #82 Dominic Heath (21)
TE3: #87 Hasan Eastwood (32)
TE4: #40 Fabio Adam (23)
Valentine may well be the best offensive player on the roster. He’s pretty good at blocking, pretty good at catching, and pretty good at running routes, and reasonably fast. Heath and Eastwood are both okay options for blocking, but not really viable options as receivers.

Wide Receivers:
WR1: #12 Olaf Ramsey (25)
WR2: #17 Antonio Kinney (31)
WR3: #85 Kiefer Miller (26)
WR4: #89 Christian Perry (22)
WR5: #10 Coby Yang (24)
Both Ramsey and Kinney are decent enough starters, neither of them is super fast or very good, but they’re serviceable enough. Perry is the fastest of the receiver, and should there be a deep shot, it’s probably aimed at him.

Centers:
C1: #55 Lincoln Workman (25)
C2: #71 Alexis Brewer (29)
The offensive line is mostly solid, although nothing breath-taking either. Of course, that’s a requirement with a Quarterback like Stein.

Guards:
LG1: #77 Nathaniel Stevens (25)
LG2: #62 Jimi Potts (27)
RG1: #69 Sam Drake (30)
RG2: #70 Matthew Bradford (20)
The Guards are mostly solid, with Stevens definitely the best of the bunch. Getting past him is a decent challenge, passing Drake should be much easier.

Tackles:
LT1: #54 Charley McArthur (22)
LT2: #59 Peter McNeill (25)
RT1: #50 Marius Hawe (26)
RT2: #67 Husnain O’Moore (20)
The Tackles are the O-Lines biggest weakness. If a defender can break through easily, McArthur is probably the one that got overrun.

DEFENSE: (main starters in bold)

Defensive Ends:
LE1: #91 Liam Dunn (30)
LE2: #56 Conrad Pitt (28)
RE1: #67 Antony Archer (23)
RE2: #78 Ralph Huffman (25)
The defense is definitely better than the offense. Archer is almost certainly the better Defensive End here; Dunn shouldn’t be too much of a concern for opponents.

Defensive Tackles:
DT1: #93 Matthias Petersen (24)
DT2: #45 Oskar Beaumont (30)
DT3: #55 Gus Mohamed (27)
Petersen is a pretty decent Defensive Tackle that is solid against the run, but won’t generate much pressure either.

Linebackers:
LOLB1: #44 Alan Stubbs (26)
LOLB2: #99 Jaydon Conner (26)
ROLB1: #40 Josh Rush (24)
ROLB2: #90 Luis Woodward (29)
Rush is a pretty solid player, able to generate pressure, while Stubbs is a much better run defender.
ILB1: #49 Pascal Melendez (24)
ILB2: #97 Edgar White (25)
ILB3: #52 Izaan Roy (23)
ILB4: #48 Jordyn Bean (20)
White and Melendez are a very solid duo that isn’t easy to pass. Maybe one of them will even get a pick on a bad pass thrown their way.

Cornerbacks:
CB1: #29 Coday Fritz (27)
CB2: #20 Jayden-James Norton (23)
CB3: #27 Andy Senior (33)
CB4: #33 Roman York (26)
CB5: #46 Victoir Huber (26)
The corners are definitely the soft spot of the team, with no real role-player here.

Safeties:
SS1: #39 Corban Farmer (25)
SS2: #35 Elis Dunn (27)
FS1: #28 Taylor Suarez (24)
FS2: #22 Gene Shannon (20)
Farmer is a good safety, able to pick balls off and break up passes if the opportunity presents itself. Otherwise, the Elephants will have some trouble defending very deep passes.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

Kicker:
K: #3 Abdul Corbett (25)
Corbett is very solid from within 40, including extra points, but everything beyond that gets difficult for him, he just lacks the strength. That’s why the Elephants will occasionally punt from way up field.
Punter:
P: #14 Cristian Ballard (22)
Ballard is a very underrated player, able to punt balls far and relatively precise. Don’t ask him to throw a pass though, it will not go well.
Long snapper:
TE3: #87 Hasan Eastwood (32)
Holder:
QB3: #9 Leandro Ho (29)
Returner:
WR4: #89 Christian Perry (22)

If you have any questions or something, please let me know either via TG or on discord.

World Bowl Roster
Bios listed under each position group
*: Was chosen for the RFL All-Star Game following the 2020 season
**: Was selected as a first team all pro following the 2020 season
[: Was cut from an RFL roster following or during the 2020 season
{: Was not on an RFL roster during the 2020 season

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my scorers: Yep!
Godmod scoring events: Yep! Feel free to be creative with it!
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but contact me first
Godmod Injuries to my players: Yes, but contact me first
Suspend my players: Sure, just contact me beforehand
Godmod suspension events: Sure! Contact me first though.
Godmod other events: Contact me first. Special note: Not that I'm going to tell you not to write it, but anything about the COVID/virus won't be acknowledged. There is no COVID in Ranoria, just like there is no war in Ba Sing Se.

Style Modifier: +5
All Players are male
Feel free to hate on my punter and kicker when RPing, Ranorian punters and kickers are notoriously poor.
Coaching Staff
Head Coach: Raul Nieler
Offensive Coordinator: Oskar Nebe
Defensive Coordinator: Konstantin Hoffmeister
Quarterbacks Coach: Raphael Rosenburger
-Passing Consultant: Elias Turner
Running Backs Coach: William Fulchs
Wide Receivers Coach: Dennis Wilks
Tight Ends Coach: Andreas Kohring
Offensive Line Coach: Philip Kindinger
Defensive Line Coach: Yannick Jackson
-Pass Rush Consultant: Thomas ‘Brawler’ Kandler
Linebackers Coach: Marvin Kraus
Cornerbacks Coach: Antonio Grendel
Safeties Coach: Kai Krämer

Captains:
Offense:
Johnny Farmer, TE
John Garrett, QB

Defense:
Kevin Gerhart, DT
Angelo Gordon, DE

Offensive Style: Ranoria's offense was predicated around Derek McNair's athleticism. While John Garrett can move well, he much prefers to stick in the pocket and shred defenses with his accuracy and awareness. He's had a heavy hand in designing this offense, more so than any one coach, and much of the blame will fall on him should it fails to consistently produce.

Defensive Style: Expect a lot of linebackers who are more about hitting than they are coverage. Exploiting this defense with loads of quick slants, curls, and seams is doable, but remind your pass catchers to wear their flak jackets. Every player on this defense grew up playing high school ball where hitting power was valued above awareness. While Ranoria's pros generally go with man coverage, they are forced to run zones because of generally more advanced passing attacks in other countries, and as such they aren't used to running the defense that they do. However, expect a very strong, stout run defense and a bunch of burly, 280+ pound defensive linemen with a love for power style pass rushing.

QB:
*#10 John Garrett, 6'4", 232 lb, 27yr
{#12 Jeremiah Quill, 6’1”, 208 lb, 25 yr
#11 Baker Owens, 5’11”, 225 lb, 31 yr
John Freaking Garrett: Yup, the man, the myth, the legend. With over 20,000 yards and 168 passing touchdowns through his first five seasons, Garrett is more than on pace to shatter every Ranorian passing record in the book. That said, he had the worst season of his career, missing six games due to injury and playing through shoulder pain in ten more. While he managed to go 9-1 to scrape his previously 1-5 squad into a playoff berth, he tossed a career high 12 picks to just 18 touchdowns. Garrett has made it very clear that this may be a one year deal, and that he's here because he wants one more shot at Isaka Jawara's Serpent Eagles.

Jeremiah Quill: Quill is an impressive athlete, but not an elite one. He is currently a practice squad quarterback. He is a poor passer, and likely will not be able to see any playing time.

Baker Owens: Look, we get it. Owens was hands down atrocious stepping in for Derek McNair last season. So yeah, Jeremiah Quill is the second stringer, but speculation is that a Cassadaiguan press piece is what swayed management to allow Owens to stay on the squad.

HB
*#29 Vice Jackson, 6'2", 238 lb, 23 yr
#27 Elijah Sampson, 6’1”, 215 lb, 30 yr
[#44 Campbell Bell(FB), 6’1”, 245 lb, 33 yr
Vice Jackson III: Jackson's rookie campaign drew a lot of intrigue. How would he perform after playing in the World Bowl before going to the RFL? Well, he was dominant. Jackson III finished with 1,778 yards, pacing runner-up Emilio Annaise by a good margin of over 80 yards. Better yet, he led the league in touchdown runs with 14. So, yep, he's still the starter, he's still a monster.

Elijah Sampson: Sampson started his career off with a bang, two 1,400 yard seasons, and then an MVP-winning 1,800 yard campaign. Ever since, he has broken the thousand yard mark just three times in 6 seasons, and never been over 3.75 yards per carry. That is, until 2024! While he still had a poor 3.99 yards per carry, Sampson finished with 351 carries, 1,402 yards, and ten touchdown runs! It was a nice bounceback season for the 30 year old back, and he's going to keep chugging along for a few more here, hopefully.

Campbell Bell: Bell was cut following the 2020 season as he was no longer deemed necessary to the team’s success. He is hoping to draw some positive attention in free agency in a league that’s rapidly shifting away from smash mouth football.

WR
#19 Calvin Hale, 6’2” ,215 lb, 22 yr
[#80 Mario Terrin, 6’2”, 220 lb, 29 yr
[#84 Jarell Goodwin, 5’11”, 190 lb, 30 yr
[#85 Tyrell Elam, 6’1”, 215 lb, 33 yr
[#10 Spencer Wilson, 5’7”, 185 lb, 27 yr
Calvin Hale: A stud at Richardson, Hale proved invaluable as Ifeatu Chineze's top target, and after going pro as a mid round pick, he's been fairly productive in the two seasons since, going over six hundred yards in each, but it's his nice size, sharp routes, and plus athleticism that makes him #1 on the depth chart.

Mario Terrin: Terrin was, and is, an athletic prospect coming out of college. But he ran out of chances, catching 253 balls for 4,028 yards and seventeen touchdowns in eight seasons. 60 of those catches, along with six touchdowns and 811 yards, came in his rookie campaign. He did, however, manage his first thousand yard campaign a couple years ago, and with Ricardo Jackson finally retiring, he's taken the reigns as the top dog in the receiver room. Well, he thought he would, at least.

Jarell Goodwin: A veteran at this point, but not a particularly productive one. Don't expect the guy to get a ton of catches, but he's a well rounded player who isn't special in any real attribute. Jack of all trades, master of none.

TE
**#82 Johnny Farmer, 6’5”, 255 lb, 26 yr
#87 Vasily Schmidt, 6'7", 270 lb, 20 yr
#88 Joey Giordano, 6’5”, 255 lb, 27 yr
[#86 Shawn Jackson, 6’6”, 260 lb, 33 yr

Johnny Farmer: Farmer is one of the best players in football. Period. After dominating the collegiate field as both a defensive lineman and a tight end, he has done the same as a professional. Led the league in receiving yards.

Vasily Schmidt: Probably the best offensive prospect Vricksinburg State has ever seen, Schmidt is still growing into his massive frame, but he's fast, he's strong, and he's mean as hell. It took going through some red tape to earn himself a check in the World Bowl, with the agreement being that it will be held for him until he declares for the RFL draft, but he's here, and he's ready to back up Johnny Farmer.

Joey Giordano: Giordano was a solid prospect coming out of Richardson University, but he was overshadowed by the presence of Johnny Farmer in his final two seasons. He is a strong run blocker, and is earning a decent deal as a proven pass catcher.

Shawn Jackson: Hasn't played in the RFL in two seasons, but he's a veteran who knows how Nieler runs the show with the Krauts, so he earns a nice pay check during the World Bowl run.

LT
#65 Tyler Williams, 6’6”, 320 lb, 29 yr
#64 Tanner Steele, 6’4”, 290 lb, 38 yr
Tanner Steele: Steele has been a solid player over the course of his career, a 6 time all star and one time all pro. At 38 years old, he still thinks he's got a couple solid seasons left in him, and who are we to deny that?

Tyler Williams: Williams came out of college as a draft bust. A first round pick who was completely incompetent as a pass blocker. But he has improved steadily throughout his career, and is now a consistent strong point for his team.

LG
*#78 Dudley Igneous , 6’5”, 320 lb, 26 yr
#66 Zane Wilhelm, 6’2”, 315 lb, 32 yr
Dudley Igneous: Igneous, is a monstrous blocker, and now as an improved pass protector is a staple for this offensive line.

Zane Wilhelm: Wilhelm is an 11 year veteran, and 2 time all star, who is receiving very little attention in free agency. He is in tight contention for the starting spot at guard, and yet has been mentoring Igneous, helping his protégée improve.

C
#72 Philippe Maxine, 6'3", 335 lb, 24 yr
#67 Tyler Friedman, 6’1”, 310 lb, 34 yr
|#68 Braxton Morrow, 6’2”, 320 lb, 24 yr
Tyler Friedman: Friedman has had an up and down career marred by injuries, but he had been good enough to stay in the league as long as he has. He simply wants to show that he can stay healthy, to earn himself a long term contract to end his career on.

Braxton Morrow: Morrow was cut halfway through the season, despite only getting playing time when the starter went down. He was seen as quality depth, but his play was atrocious, and he sees this as his last chance.

RG
#63 Morris Bron, 6'6", 330 lb, 25 yr
#|71 Stone Silver, 6’3’, 295 lb, 29 yr
Morris Bron: The team's success has allowed them to start signing bigger, stronger, faster linemen last season. He's one of them.

Stone Silver: Silver's a solid blocker, but he has trouble contending with the raw size of Bron. Rest assured, the guard spots have very effective backups behind them.

RT
# 77 Trent Sedimite, 6’7”, 320 lb, 37 yr
Sedimite is a longtime veteran who has seen off and on playing time, earning 111 starts over the course of 16 seasons. He’s no hall of famer, but he may just be enough to hold the right side down.

LE
*#99 Emmanuel Miller, 6'9", 300 lb, 27 yr
#94 Zach Skinner, 6’4”, 270 lb, 27 yr
Emmaneul Miller may have the most impact of a line heavy defense. He was a playmaker from Richardson University, and has been productive as a pro due to his length and sheer power. He is especially good against the run.

Zach Skinner: In six seasons, Skinner has accrued 59 tackles for a loss and the same number of sacks, doing much better in the last few seasons. He has two all star nods, and is a consistently top 5 pass rusher these days in the RFL.

DT
*#98 Kevin Gerhart, 6’5”, 325 lb, 27 yr
#91 Julius Volt, 6’6”, 295 lb, 25 yr
#79 John Bronson, 6’4”, 340 lb, 35 yr
[#90 Emit Willis, 6’2”, 305 lb, 31 yr
Kevin Gerhart: Gerhart is a physical specimen, and was a dominant force in college. He underperformed in his first few seasons in the pros, but bounced back last year in the world bowl and domestic seasons.

Julius Volt: Volt is a hybrid DE/DT, physically capable of lining up at 3-tech or as an edge defender. He’s generally an 8-10 sack guy in the domestic season, and his moving around provides versatility and matchup issues.

RE
**#44 Angelo Gordon, 6'4", 255 lb, 26 yr
#96 William Teller, 6’3”, 280 lb, 26 yr
Angelo Gordon: A lot of you know Gordon. For those who don't, he's a mean, hard hitting, fast edge rusher with disproportionate strength, dominant against the run and the pass. He has an NSCF DPOY trophy on his wall, and has had four straight 13+ sack seasons and five 13+ TFL seasons in the RFL. The kid's a monstrosity, but he does have a bit of a temper. Consistent first team all pro, centerpiece of the Pittsburgh Ironmen's vaunted defense, which put a stop to John Garrett's try at a championship run as a rookie. Expect a lot of long arms and hump rush moves on the way to his inevitable reaching of the quarterback.

William Teller: Teller had 23 sacks in two seasons in college, but after only playing in twelve games in three years, he was cut. The World Bowl, however, gave him a second chance, and now Teller is one of the better edge defenders in Ranoria.

OLB
#57Johnson Ellis, 6’2”, 220 lb, 24 yr
#54, Armin Frost, 6’, 240 lb, 30 yr
{#51 Antonio Mormon, 6’3”, 245 lb, 28 yr
Johnson Ellis: Ellis is a young, coverage linebacker. He’s decent against the run, but his lack of tackling tendency and the RFL’s slow to shift defensive mindset towards linebackers meant that he went undrafted. Ellis, however, is a blanket in coverage, and will undoubtable be a huge asset in a room of linebackers who know one thing: Hit, and hit hard.

MLB
#55 Ross Monarch, 6’3”, 247 lb, 29 yr
#58 Isaac Thomas, 6’1”, 260 lb, 36 yr,
{#57 Terry Clement, 6’2”, 245 lb, 26 yr

Ross Monarch: Monarch is the best linebacker in Ranoria, bar none. He's above average both blitzing and in coverage, but he's a phenom when it comes to stopping the run, leading the RFL with a ridiculous 176 tackles last season.

CB
*#25 Darnell Sleight, 6’0”, 210 lb, 25 yr
{#20 Donnie Mandarin, 5’9”, 200 lb, 32 yr
{#23 Pierre Strobe, 5’9”, 204 lb, 26 yr
Darnell Sleight: One of the better corners in the RFL, Sleight is a great corner with plenty of ability to

S
#22 Kenny Leinden, 5'11", 205 lb, 28 yr
[#40 Cliff Henson, 6’0”, 210 lb, 34 yr
[#43 Harry Bean, 6’2”, 215 lb, 24 yr

K: #5 Barry Chlorid

P: {#6 Ozzie Tanman, 6’1”, 25 yr

Chromatik Football League, Season 2

With Felswyr State University doing so well, and the nation going to host a World Bowl, let us see what happened in the last CFL season, right before the World Bowl! We'll be taking you through the games, two weeks at a time, and see who ends up on top!

Week 1

Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 | Tot
Brisara Juggernauts 3 0 0 0 | 3
Qet Lynx 0 7 7 3 | 17
A marquee game to start us off! Kenner Jones is held back, but Marion Berry gains 144 yards rushing and two scores, and the Lynx defense is stout. Good going, defending champs!

Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 | Tot
Knetyohai Icebreakers 7 0 0 6 | 13
Chromatik City Cyan 10 14 3 7 | 34
The Cyan are on a mission to make sure that they win the title this year, and Jill Kieran is a huge part of that. Sarai Gwenderyn might be on the World Bowl roster ahead of her, but she's a pretty decent Quarterback. Kern Sayen is a pretty good receiver, getting two touchdowns. As for the Icebreakers, at least George Graham had two fumble recoveries on the day?

Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 | Tot
Deprí Lanar Turtles 3 0 7 0 | 10
Deprí Sanar Battalion 3 0 7 3 | 13
One of the rivalry matches in Week 1? Bless the schedule gods! Whenever Deprí Lanar and Deprí Sanar clash in any sport, it's a big deal, and in gridiron it's no different. Battalion kicker Germaine Ett kicks a 49 yard field goal as time expires after Battalion cornerback Whitney Mowa intercepted Turtles Quarterback Jackson Hex in the last two minutes. For a team that really struggled, it's a great start for the Battalion.

Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 | Tot
Alnio Pirates 7 0 7 0 | 14
Staramara Angels 7 0 7 3 | 17
"We're going to be much better this year," states Angels Coach Bart Higgins before the match. This squad, who only had one player on the World Bowl roster, relied on young outside linebacker Jordan Hastings to contain Pirates Quarterback Freddie Warlog while workhorse running back Garth Byler scored both touchdowns. The Angels held the ball for over thirty minutes to record the victory.
Week 2

Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 | Tot
Qet Lynx 0 3 7 0 | 10
Staramara Angels 0 0 0 7 | 7
Staramara is playing quite a bit tougher, aren't they? Qet barely hung onto the victory after Byler scored his third touchdown of the season. Maybe they should let Ben Vince play a bit more? The Angel Quarterback is young, but has some potential. Not that relying on Byler is a bad idea.

Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 | Tot
Deprí Sanar Battalion 0 0 7 0 | 7
Alnio Pirates 7 7 3 0 | 17
After winning the Deprí rivalry match, spirits were high amongst the Battalion; however, the Pirates had other ideas, with Freddie Warlog throwing for 250 yards and two scores and the defense holding the Battalion to less than 100 yards rushing. Disappointment for the Battalion and star receiver Rick Bant, who feels that he's been snubbed from the World Bowl roster.

Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 OT | Tot
Chromatik City Cyan 3 0 0 3 3 | 9
Deprí Lanar Turtles 0 3 0 3 0 | 6
The Turtles were so close! Jill Kieran turns the ball over three times, two of those times leading to short field goals by Turtles Kicker Samuel Jones, but Cyan kicker Meeran Plox nails a fifty-two yarder in overtime after the Cyan held the Turtles to 245 yards of offense.

Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 | Tot
Brisara Juggernauts 3 0 7 7 | 17
Knetyohai Icebreakers 7 0 3 0 | 10
The Juggernauts bounced back, and Knetyohai is no Qet. Kimberly Fowler rushes for a pair, and the Juggernauts hold firm with a goal line stand in the last quarter.

Standings after Two Weeks:
Chromatik Football League Pld W L PF PA PD
1 Chromatik City Cyan 2 2 0 43 19 +24
2 Qet Lynx 2 2 0 27 10 +17
3 Staramara Angels 2 1 1 24 24 0
4 Alnio Pirates 2 1 1 31 24 +7
5 Brisara Juggernauts 2 1 1 20 27 −7
Depri Sanar Battalion 2 1 1 20 27 −7
7 Depri Lanar Turtles 2 0 2 16 22 −6
8 Knetyohai Icebreakers 2 0 2 23 51 −28

The Karditan Ironworkers
Image
(helmet design courtesy of TGT Sports of former Wight)

The Ironworkers have returned from their oh-so-long hiatus--thirteen world bowls and nearly three decades--to grace the halls of international gridiron once more. Even through the Dark Times football remained a fact of life in inland Karditan, getting progressively more and more violent as society collapsed. It's been pulled back from the brink since the reinstitution of the government, but the echoes of that violence still rings in how players are trained to this day. They'll be managed by Grey Skies, a fifty-nine year old pegasus who is the sole remaining survivor of the last Ironworkers team.

They carry on the stylistic drive of the original Ironworkers team, which is to say completely aimless offensive playcalling, heavy reliance on defensive conversions, and Jeremiah Bull's iron boot working overtime.

Home Stadium: Redzzon Coliseum, Indianeighpolis; Cap. 120 000. They sure do love their football in Indianeighpolis. Football football football. Not baseball, no, and not just because their team is consistently terrible. Football. And if you do anything to insult their football, well, they've got pretty good hospitals. The denizens (70% pony) are the loudest, most obnoxious fans Karditan has to offer, which is partially why they have this giant stadium to root in. That and Redzzon Oil is based in Indianeighpolis and has a ludicrous amount of profits to throw around. They've also got a big-screen scoreboard the size of a house hanging above the western stands.

World Bowl XLI Preview
Life is Pain

Okay, everybody's been asking me to do one of these, so I'm gonna go through it real quick. I'm gonna be honest, after the horrendous end to the IBC, the somehow not-very-surprising 0-0-3 World Cup showing, and the way-too-early exit from the previous World Bowl, I gotta say. My hype is pretty much dead. We're probably going to take some horrendous L's and once again go home empty handed. I have several pieces of evidence here.

Exhibit A: Rank and Recent Form

Right now, we're ranked 6th in the World Bowl rankings. Do you know the last time we were ranked outside of the Top 5 in the World Bowl? You don't. You know why? It was over 10 Bowls ago. That's right, the last time Drawkland were outside of the World Bowl Top 5 was coming into World Bowl XXX. We were ranked 17th at the time. I mean, that didn't stop us from making a shock title run, but STILL. Even with only one title won after WB XXX, even with our consistent play, even with our heartbreaking late playoff losses, we still managed to stop atop the World Bowl cabal as nations shifted around us. The fact that we're now ranked 6th (and a decently far cry from the Top 3) is simply symptomatic of our falling play late. The Round of 16 exit in World Bowl XL (the first time we've lost that early since World Bowl XXIX) was just a sign of the times.

Exhibit B: Roster on Life Support

I can't deny that the players on our Grid Corps roster have been solid, year in and year out. They've dominated the GLD and for the most part, the World Bowl, consistently. And yet, this squad is aging, and not aging well. A lot of them were waiting on that last third ring to ride off into the sunset. Dak Waterman had the right idea and jumped ship early when we got absolutely curbstomped in that mickey mouse final against the Free Republics. It sucked that the living legend didn't get to end his football career with a win on the biggest stage, but at least he didn't have to put up with two more Bowls of flailing embarrassment.

The Grid Corps players are great, but they need to move on. We have plenty of talent in the GLD which can fill the roster with renewed vigor, as well as some promising rookies with built-in international experience from their play in the NSCF. With Cavsar now solidly in the mix, we now have two breeding grounds for potentially World Bowl-level talent going into the GLD. It sucks to say it, but this should be the last ride for a majority of this squad. If they don't voluntarily retire, then in the nicest way possible, I hope they all get career-ending injuries once this Bowl is done. We need new talent and we need it fast. Keep a couple "younger" veterans, like Beck and Hoy, around. Then throw the rest into a massive trench filled with hard candies and dentures.

Exhibit C: Our Competition

Not only do we have to contend with our own ailing team, but we also have to contend with other actual teams. Sure, we'll probably cruise into the playoffs. We won't be undefeated, obviously. We'll lose a couple of matches out of nowhere. Probably against some shitty nation we have no business losing to. Just look at the Net Corps losing to the United Volcano Isles! Speaking of which, our IBC rank is totally fucked. The mediocre group stage coupled with an awful second stage showing is going to tank us. We may still be Top 5, but we'll be miles behind Newmanistan and Banija. Oh fuck, this is a World Bowl post. Back on topic ...

Cassadaigua joined Ko-oren in the now much larger 3-time-winners club. It used to just be Allamunnic States and Dancougar for the longest time, with only the surprisingly large group of two-timers underneath them. Then, two Bowls in a row, two-timers upgrade to three-timers. God I wish that were us. It's not like we didn't have the chance ... whatever. It's in the past, and I have to come to terms with the fact that we suck now. Back on topic ...

Cassadaigua are ranked #1 following their title run. Their passing defense is scarier than normal now, and their offense is nothing to sniff at. Can we beat them? no.
Ranoria have been doing that "undefeated group stage" thing for awhile and just barely flaming out in the playoffs. They finally got a podium position last Bowl. Can we beat them? no.
The second (or third? or fourth?) coming of Allamunnic States is also not to be trifled with. They might not be the fearsome core they were 20 Bowls ago, but can we beat them? no.
Ko-oren may have had too much of a World Bowl hangover, but their defense is still terrifying. Anybody remember World Bowl XXXIX? You already know we can't beat them.

There's a bunch of other nations around our skill level which we can probably beat. But these elite? These Top 4? These nations who are truly vying for a title? We stand no chance against them. Bar nothing.

Group Stage Prospects

I'll admit, our group stage is probably going to go smoothly. We got a decently soft group. Let's do some rapid fire remarks about each of the teams we'll be playing home-and-away.

TJUN-ia, ranked #15. Oh my God, these guys are getting good in everything really fast. It's kinda scary. I'm guessing we'll go 1-1 against them, and they'll probably get second in the group and make a good playoff run. Those tricky Jags.

Greater Vakolicci Haven, ranked #24. Oh God, oh fuck. Greater Vakolicci Haven? Formerly known as Velstrania? Oh my fucking God. The World Bowl XXXII flashbacks are coming back. The semifinal. One game from another championship. One drive left, they're inside the five with a minute to go. Just one stop and we win. We just need to not give up a touchdown. Oh my God, just cover the receivers. We don't need to get a safety here. We'll win with a punt. Please, it's a flea flicker. Oh my God, they can't hear me. They can't stop him. Oh no, he's going to score. We're not going to make the World Bowl championship. Oh no, oh no, oh no, make it stop make it stop makeitstop makeitstopmakeitstopmakeitstop

Saint-Domingues, unranked. A new squad, whose mother nation has been entering their national teams in sports across the multiverse, with mediocre success. We should take them 2-0. Knowing us, we'll split it 1-1.

United Volcano Isles, unran- wait, we have to play these motherfuckers again? After what happened in the IBC? This has to be some cruel joke. Seriously. Are you kidding me? We should take them 2-0 of course. And yet we'll ... somehow ... lose to them. I think I'm losing my grip on what little sanity I have left. Fuck. Anyway, let's go on to the conclusion here

Closing Remarks

Sure, we'll cruise to the playoffs. And then we'll get slapped in the playoffs. Whatever, that's the Corps Way now. Something something On Corps, amirite? I'm this close to cursing off these shit squads forever. All this potential, just to be completely wasted? It's tough. It's hard to watch. It's not even entertaining.

In short, life is pain. Suffering, even. Agony, if you will. Torment, if you're so inclined. This is the life of a Drawkian NT fan, now. Enjoy your last taste of middling success before everything takes a turn for the even worse.

United Volcano Isles 38–14 Saint-Domingues
The UVI were able to pull out their first win of the tournament, and their first win with a new identity. Many players were returning from the Laahana team from the year before, however after some strategic changes, the offense seems to be going in a very different direction that they have been before. They seem like a far more well rounded unit than before, and it certainly showed today as they scored an astounding 38 points on a tough Saint Domingues team.

Taking over from the legend ‘Iolani Hale, Kapua'ula Kamehaha put up one of the best performances ever by a UVI QB. 221 Passing Yards, 1 TD and 103 Rushing yards with 2 rushing TD’s were managed by the QB. “He was really able to show off his arm to the crowd today” mentioned UVI Head Coach Haumakapu'u Kanoa, “We usually don’t expect QB’s from our nation to throw the ball that much, especially from a new player just coming in.” Does this signal a new type of QB for the UVI? Most QB’s before have been a purely Option QB, although Kamehaha’s arm talent may be revolutionary for the nation.

Despite this, the run game for the UVI was not absent at all. Haunani Mahi'ai put up a very strong performance in which he managed 122 yards and a rush touchdown, which gave the Kalactanians 3 of them on the day. 'Alohi Alapai, the Fullback, caught 4 passes and ran for 36 yards today, and added a Touchdown catch, coach Kanoa said “we are really impressed how he is using his ability like a Swiss Army knife, he seems to be able to use his large frame in any way he wants, which is very helpful.”

Next week we will have a very tough match. We will be playing against the Pot 1 team in our group, Drawkland. They will pose a very tough challenge to us, however this win has put confidence in the team leadership that they can control the game. Ultimately, it may come down to the play of the key offensive players, they had a great game today, and it showed on the scoreboard, but they will need to come through next week to ensure a win. As always, go Volcano’s.

Player Spotlight 1: Jack Hoy

Postby Drawkland » Thu Feb 25, 2021 1:40 am

Player Spotlight
Jack Hoy

World Bowl XLI will spell the end for many players on the Grid Corps roster. Most have marked themselves for upcoming retirement, either domestically, internationally, or both, and thus this is most likely their last ride into the sunset. To honor their fight to prove Drawkland as one of the greatest gridiron nations of all time, we're running a short series that highlight some of the superstars, most of which are on their way out after this World Bowl is done.

Image

To start this series, we'll look at none other than perhaps the Corps' loudest mouth, Jack Hoy. Ever since he came into the national consciousness by ripping up turf in the college scene, he's had an ego larger than most stadiums. To his credit, Hoy has managed to put his money where his mouth is 90% of the time, but it doesn't stop him from being one of the most controversial superstars in Drawkland's recent memory.

Coming out of college, Hoy was drafted by the Ducentu Glassmen with the #1 overall pick in the GLD draft. His talent as an elusive, speedy, but still physical back was undeniably one of the best skill sets seen in many drafts. Even though Ducentu wasn't really in need of a running back, thanks to a mid-tier talent in Ted Henderson, they drafted Hoy anyway because he was the best player in the draft. Plus, their division rival Elmanden Circuits were in desperate need of a franchise running back, and had the third pick in the draft. Not only did they steal away the best RB prospect from Elmanden, but they also kept themselves from having to try and find a way to defend Hoy twice a season.

Hoy's rookie season was one to remember, as he put together one of the most impressive first years of any Drawkian player, much less running backs. His 1500 yards on the ground, 20 TDs, and leading a struggling Glassmen squad to a division title was more than enough to instantly prove his worth as a Drawkland elite. This is why he was selected for the World Bowl XXXII roster, and his performance since then has cemented his spot in the Grid Corps roster. Unfortunately for Ducentu, Hoy's power alone was not enough to get a playoff win.

The next season would be similar to his first season, as Hoy would continue to dominate on the ground and carry Ducentu to victory. Even with a season's worth of film, most teams had a hard time holding Hoy down. Despite their relatively mediocre results, Ducentu's offensive coordinator was doing a decent job keeping Hoy's touches unpredictable. This was done especially through a light passing attack with aging veteran QB Jamie Greer, and by giving Ted Henderson a decent amount of carries. Even so, pretty much all of the offense that didn't involve Jack Hoy struggled, regardless of scheming. Then came the bigger issues.

After two seasons, Jack Hoy was fed up from having to split carries with Henderson, as well as suffering with a mediocre passing game. Despite having over 3000 yards in just two seasons, Hoy was attempting to look elsewhere. He demanded that the Glassmen front office trade him to another franchise. It was a huge deal, as many players and pundits alike thought this was a greedy move, especially so early into his rookie contract. Hoy had all the power in his hands, though. He threatened to play the following season if he wasn't traded. This put all the pressure on Ducentu, who would likely flounder without Hoy on the field, and would lose lots of potential capital if they refused to trade him for an entire season. Eventually, the Glassmen blinked first, and Hoy was traded to the Quinnaber Vultures, who would see out the rest of his 4-year rookie contract.

The strangest thing about Hoy's "holdout" was that it wasn't for more money. The Vultures merely picked up the rest of his contract, rather than negotiating a new one. This quieted a few of Hoy's critics who assumed his holdout was to squeeze more money from Ducentu (not true, as he was making the same amount in Quinnaber), or to hop to a team that had a better chance of winning a title soon (Quinnaber was arguably worse than Ducentu). The whole situation left a bad taste in many fan's mouths, either way.

Quinnaber would prove to be a better change of scenery for Hoy, at least as far as his ego was concerned. With no serviceable options at running back besides the newly-acquired Hoy, Quinnaber's coaching staff were glad to make Hoy the unanimous workhorse who got touches as much as possible. With this, Hoy would gain his first 2000 yard rushing season in his first season as a Vulture. Once again, his power was enough to lead the Vultures to the playoffs via wildcard, though once again he couldn't carry his team to a playoff win.

The next season would take a turn for the worse. Quinnaber lost a lot of key pieces on defense to retirement or trades, and the offensive line suffered several season-ending injuries early on. Their record was abysmal, and most teams that played them shot out to an early multi-score lead and would ride it to a win. Even with Hoy tearing up turf, he can't do much when the team is losing by 21 and they need to pass the ball. Coupled with the O-line missing a lot of blocks, Hoy had a much harder time, putting up his worst numbers yet with only 1200 yards.

Hoy's rookie contract was up at that point, and he had the chance to move to greener pastures. Those who know football know that running backs all have an internal clock to them, and one day the clock goes off and their production starts to regress rapidly. Through four years though, Jack Hoy showed no signs of stopping. Sure, the last year had been his worst yet, but a lot of those factors were out of his control. If he was in the proper system, with a proper team around him, Hoy could once again steamroll the GLD. It was clear his time at Quinnaber was over, and thus Hoy and his agent went to court other teams.

There were three things Hoy wanted from a team for him to consider signing.
1) They had to be willing to make him the primary workhorse for the team, splitting carries should be off the table.
2) They had to have an offensive line that didn't suck complete ass.
3) They had to give him a massive payday.
Not many teams could check all three boxes, as a lot of teams who had competent O-lines already had most of their pieces together, and certainly wouldn't be listening to the demands of an annoyingly persnickety running back, no matter how good he was. Eventually though, Hoy found his new home.

The Waxton Pilots, who'd been in a rebuild phase for the last half-decade, were finally starting to get things going. The past few seasons they'd benefitted from the twilight of Joe Burnham, a running back who had one of the most iconic careers in GLD history. However, Burnham's production had been subpar at best lately, as his wheels had definitely began to fall off. They needed a new running back to anchor the team and keep their game-manager-more-than-game-winner QB in Wyatt Danson in a position where he didn't have to pass too much. They managed to get Hoy's interest and eventually his commitment, and from there one could say Hoy's career truly begun.

Though Joe Burnham was still on the team, his carries were few and far between and he served more of a mentor role. Jack Hoy took over as the main man and reminded the GLD that he was still a force to be reckoned with. His production, now that he wasn't behind a patchwork o-line, shot back up. Hoy ran over 1600 yards on the ground and added another 500 yards receiving on the season, and the Pilots went on to win their division. Not only that, but they actually won a playoff game! Sure they got dumped off in the next round, but things were looking up.

The Pilots enjoyed a gradual ascent from there, as the next season Hoy once again broke the 2000 rushing yard mark, and led the Pilots to another division title. This time, they won playoff games in the first AND second round, but fell in the Conference Championship to the Dammenport Lightning. The next season, Hoy fell just short of another 2000 rushing season. The Pilots, now a well-oiled machine in a championship window led by Hoy, won their conference championship and went on to play in the title game. They fell just short again, losing on the final drive of the fourth quarter to the Sadeg Claymores.

Jack Hoy's 8th season would be one for the ages. For the third time in his career, he managed over 2000 rushing yards, and grabbed 1000 receiving yards as well (though you have to count the playoff run for those receiving yards). The squad built around him was tuned well, and now they were starting to win convincingly against almost all teams they faced. In the regular season they lost to Underrunners and the Stallions, in the playoffs they beat them both. Then, finally, they reached the promised land again. This time though, Jack Hoy would not be denied. He ran for 200 yards and caught for 50, scoring 4 touchdowns including a passing TD on a trick play at the goalline. Their opponents in the Drawk Corps put up a good fight, but they couldn't overcome the Pilots en route to their first title in decades.

Now that Hoy had his domestic ring (as well as the World Bowl ring from the previous season), his career was now truly legendary. He could've called it quits there and probably made the Hall of Fame. But he didn't. He signed a new contract with the Pilots, taking a little less money in order to give more space to sign better pieces around him, and returned to the field the following season. While Hoy would continue to easily gain 1000+ yard seasons and lead the Pilots to the playoffs year after year (and even another couple titles), nothing was quite as sweet as the road to his first ring.

You're probably a little estranged right now. Really, three 2000 yard seasons? In one man's career? Impossible. Constant production, year in and year out, over the course of nearly two decades, without major injuries? Without losing more than a couple steps? No person should be able to accomplish that. This is what I mean when I say Jack Hoy is probably the greatest running back in Drawkian history. By all means, he had no right to continue to produce this much offense, and yet he refuses to let up. Most Drawkian running backs can't play until they're 40. Jack Hoy has passed that mark, and is still rolling with no signs of stopping soon. In his own words, Hoy has said that he will play in the GLD and the World Bowl until he's 50, and he'll keep going until he decides he's done. Sure, it's egotistical and probably a bit too hopeful, but that's Jack Hoy for you. And in any case, he was right. When he was being interviewed after his final college season, he said he was going to be a guaranteed Hall-of-Famer. At this point? We're inclined to believe he's right.

*The Drawkian lifespan is around 150 years. Athletes usually graduate college and enter their pro leagues around the age of 25, and most well-trained, injury-avoiding, and actually-skilled players aim to retire around 50, though plenty athletes don't quite make it there before hanging it up.

Captain’s Log, Stardate 20210219.1109

The crew is abuzz, and not just the Insecto-Desiccants. News of the sport tournament against the primitives has captured the imagination of everyone from senior officers to junior enlisteds and civilians. The team returned today to be greeted like heroes, with a full attendance in Hangar Bay 1. It was wonderful to see the children flocking to Ensign Mornwulf; many of them have had little cause for cheer in recent days but seem to have found something to look forward to now as excitement builds for our first ‘home’ game. I believe that Captain Hardbear’s final wish may have been one last act of shrewd perspicacity from a dearly missed old friend.

Speaking of old friends, Commander Twinklefeather returned in a trying emotional state; I could feel her sorrow when the landing craft were still several thousand clicks out of range. Sundew is a powerful empath, even more so than myself, and has clearly been picking up on the disappointment of the rest of the team. During the game, she missed three kicks for a total of 7 points – the eventual margin of defeat to the ‘Brains’ of Kohnhead. No one consciously blames her for the defeat but of course any momentary flash of regret or reproach sears through the mind of one as sensitive as her. I hope my old friend can recover her spirits in time for the next game.

The game ended in defeat but Lieutenant Chiasson assures me that any team can win or lose on “any given Sunday”. (I believe the primitives associate this ritual game with their traditional day of religious rest and observance for cultic reasons, and hope to explore some of the xenoanthropological implications in due course.) I was not personally able to attend as I was overseeing repairs to the ship’s systems; thanks to the hard work of the engineering crews, we now have restored life support on all decks, including the xenon-based atmosphere on Deck a. This should be a cause for considerable relief for Archon Jjuuddeerrbbiiddiill; sshhee has been enduring the situation stoically but I can sense that hheerr left head finds the breathing apparatus uncomfortable.

One unfortunate consequence of the game has been a certain amount of injury. Lieutenant Nysathusa does not believe the primitives intentionally inflicted injuries and reports that it is relatively common for injuries to occur in the course of their rites. Nonetheless, I received a burst of angry static from Lieutenant Commander U-Mod-79c, who is angry that Lt. Azurisz, who was injured during the initial encounter with the anomaly, has re-aggravated her tail fracture. The doctor has synthesized a new bone and surgery has gone well, but as much to avoid being yelled at by an irascible android as to protect their patient, I have grounded Azurisz for the game against South Newlandia. She is most aggrieved at missing the first ‘home’ game and has marked her displeasure with extensive defecation; fortunately Dr. Thormodsson reports her guano acts as a fairly potent fertilizer and should aid, rather than harm, the growth of the strange alien substance known as “grass”.

More troublingly, young Mr. Spendlove received a spiral fracture to the wrist. During the course of the game one of Commander Twinklefeather’s kicks was blocked by the primitive known as Espinosa; Xanderick bravely dived on the ball to prevent the primitives from recovering it, but only just before Ensign Luna had the same idea. S/he fell heavily on the young man and despite his protestations to the contrary was clearly in significant pain. I regret having to pull him from the team given his obvious enjoyment of the sport, but I cannot allow a child to be injured. Until further notice he is suspended from the squad, and Technician Whisperfire will take over his role as holder. Technician Nassatos suffered a broken ankle, but fortunately following swift repair should be fit to play in the next game; Lt. Cdr. Nonopalet broke a transverse rib which punctured hxs seventh lung, but Dr. U-Mod-79c has repaired the damage and the Commander steadfastly refuses to sit out the next game. Hxs bravery is admirable, though I continue to detect significant reservations about my decision to enter the tournament whenever I am in hxs presence.

If this spate of injuries seems concerning, by all accounts the game itself was a fair and even encounter. The ‘Brains’, more experienced and better practised, understandably came away winners, but there were some exciting moments for our team, too. I enjoyed showing the crew a holo of Skaduwee’s emphatic dancing to celebrate Ensign Mornwulf running in a late ‘touchdown’, though unfortunately only after one of the most skilful primitives, Polisson, broke away for a big score that essentially guaranteed our defeat. The Ensign played very well, as did some of our defensive players. Commander Xian had an interception and Mr. Rudd had two; I was, I admit, a little alarmed on hearing that he had ‘picked off’ the opponents twice, but Commander Muskkukki assures me that this was all in the course of the game and that his behavior while in Kohnhead was appropriate.

Chief Varziev and Dr. Thormodsson say Hangar Bay 1 is nearly ready to receive the visitors. I have given all non-essential crew a half-day leave to attend the game against South Newlandia. There is a rumor among the children that the visitors are all Proboscis-Desiccants, and I am trying to gently let them down, assuring them that the animals known as ‘elephants’ are merely some kind of mascots for the team, so that they are not disappointed when the no-doubt humanoid players arrive. Everyone is putting in a great effort to get the ship ready for this grand occasion. I even saw Crewman Meridian pulling an extra shift in the encrypted files section of the computer storage housing. What a generous spirit!

Computer, end log.

The Buio'Dzz
Before every match, the team members (including the designated substitutes for the match) will perform a traditional ritual, called the Buio'Dzz on the pitch just before play begins. The Buio'Dzz performed by the Maplish sports teams are from the Mapli-ane, one of the largest aboriginal groups in Mapletish. The Buio'Dzz originated from the sun god, Inaka, a Mapli-ane creation. To celebrate the birth of his son Arone, Inaka broke into a dance while humming a poem to celebrate the occasion. This continued to be the foundation of all tribe dances done by the Maplish aboriginals. The Buio'Dzz is just one of the many tribe war dances from the aboriginals of Mapletish. It is meant to awe and to challenge their opponents in the sports context today. This is similar to the [RL] New Zealanders' haka before their matches. It is performed by a group of people, with intensity and vigour. Actions are performed rhythmically including foot-stamping, tongue protrusions, rhythmic body slapping, clapping of the hands, and an accompaniment of shouting in the aboriginal dialect, which may represent tribal poems passed down from the ancestors of the particular tribe, or a poem that marks the events of a particular tribe. This ceremonial dance ritual also fulfills social functions such as weddings, funerals and celebration of great achievements, occasions, other than the anticipation of war from its earlier intentions. This would be performed unless the hosts of the match in question object to the ritual.

Notes
The World Bowl 41 celebrates the Dragons 2nd entrance to a World Bowl competition. The Dragons do not exactly have a history in gridiron football and are never thought to be the front runners in this sport. The only other World Bowl that the Dragons entered themselves into was World Bowl 17, which was a good 24 editions away. Back then the Dragons travelled to Michael VII for the event together with the Baptism of Iron, the Baptism of Fire's gridiron football equivalent. Both events didn't go as planned back then as the Dragons crushed out at group stage for both events. The Dragons, however are looking for better pastures now that they are travelling to Chromtika for the World Bowl once again as they looked to achieve what their seniors haven't achieved earlier. Although on the national level, gridiron football is not as widely played and is not as popular as compared to the bigger sports like association football, rugby union and ice-hockey, the Mapletish Gridiron Football League lights up the weekends for many Maplish homes as they brought about more sporting entertainment to the wider Maplish sports fanbase. Following the dispute between the national sports organisations and the Mapletish Board of Sports Organisations (MBSO), the professional gridiron football clubs or the Big Twenty Sports Clubs were unwilling to release their players to participate in the WB. With this, the player base is drastically reduced but that is not stopping the ambitious head coach, Edgar Phelps from entering the WB with his team from the Mapletish National Gridiron Football Development Squad.

Go with the wind, young man

Gone with the wind, my love

Seems the young roses in my name,

Blot a fragrance in my place.

Next as my name the roses grow

Drop like the petals of the red.

Leave them the birthright of my soul,

Hold the rainbow in their rosy flame!

Leave them the birthright of my soul!

En your new wreath of sea and land!

Leave them the birthright of my soul!

Keep the bright spring of my golden ore!

Leave them the birthright of my soul

Make the old home of my angels free!

Man of the Match: Kouji Nakano
GSU's campaign got off to a bad start with them losing 18-35 at home to a team from Squidroidian side after a ruthless second quarter that saw the Squidroidians score two touchdowns to put the game practically beyond doubt before the second half even began. Unusually for a friendly match of this stature, there were lots of Squidroidian fans in the GSU Field, practically outnumbering the GSU supporters who turned up. Interviews with several Squidroidian supporters on why they held such fervent support for their national team returned answers such as "It's the WORLD BOWL!" when pressed. The match itself was also announced as the a Tumbran National Team versus a Squidroidian National Team, which also raised confusion from several GSU supporters, and evidently, some of those on the pitch as well.

The first quarter started poorly enough, with a touchdown from Squidroidian Kouji Nakano beginning the scoring spree after three minutes of play. Opting to go for the 1 point after touchdown - which, for readers who didn't buy our special edition explaining how gridiron works, is when the kicker on the team attempts to hit the ball through the goal - kicker Flynn De Laurentis managed to score a confidently hit ball.

The GSU outfit, however, managed to hack three points back before the end of the quarter with an superbly hit field goal courtesy of sophomore Nick Evans after three downs saw the Blue-and-Gold outfit head into the second quarter relatively confidently. The second quarter, however, saw two touchdowns from Squidroidia - the first a passing play scored by Stein Bell, the second a rushing play scored by Nakano once more - which were both followed up by two pointers, rendering the GSU team unable to respond. The second rushing play scored by Nakano was deemed the moment of the match that the GSU team could not return from - and although tight end Russell Dean managed to make a play in the middle of the second quarter, the first half ended 9-23, which effectively set the tone for the rest of the match.

Throughout the first half break multiple statistics were shown about the World Bowl that the GSU team were apparently playing in - this is the 41st edition, and Tumbra are making their debuts in this competition, going up against the seventeenth-ranked Squidroidians. Several attempts to contact anyone in charge of the graphics at half-time were rebuffed, and our investigative journalist Corey Williams was removed from the GSU Field by security after he attempted to enter the audiovisiuals room.

The second half started again with the look of a possible comeback for GSU, with Evans scoring yet another field goal, but this was rendered moot by Nakano once again scoring - leaving Kwaitkowski in the dust - yet another touchdown, but failing to score the points after touchdown. Three downs near the end of the third quarter saw Squidroidia go for a field goal, which they duly scored.

The fourth quarter saw the Squidroidians perhaps lift off a little bit, allowing Tyler Davis to score a touchdown early on - however, the conversion afterwards was denied by the strong Squidroidian defences. The Squidroidians scored a last minute field goal to secure the final score of 18-35, and mark a loss for the GSU team. The Campus Daily's sports desk will return for coverage of the GSU's away match against Equestria, which looks set to be another barnburner.

Charlie Brown's office

"Amazing, Charlie. Amazing. Our first match against a team way stronger than us and we end up losing. Imagine the effect that'll have on team morale. And imagine how bloody confused they were when they heard the words 'World Bowl' at the start. Friendly matches my arse! The Squidroidians were out for blood on that pitch."
"Hm. As time goes on it'll be difficult to keep this under wraps. Especially when a ton of Squidroidians began turning up at the GSU Field. I didn't even tell the World Bowl organisation how to get to GSU!"
"Yeah, and now the campus bosses are suspicious."
"What? Christ. Harry, you can't be serious."
"Yes, Charlie, turns out it's a bit difficult to keep a project of this scale under wraps for this much longer. Eventually it'll all come out, and you'll have a shit ton of egg on your face. Why not just try to control the narrative? Slowly reveal it. Start with the players. Then the administrators. Then we'll be able to let the wider media know. That way we'll actually be able to tell people about this slowly, and make people interested."
"It's an idea..."

NSFB: Jags Return With A Tight Win In The Gardens!

Postby TJUN-ia » Thu Feb 25, 2021 10:06 am

After a long wait and a desire to actually move on up as a team in this sport, The Field of Dreams in the Gardens of New Washington finally saw Gridiron Football return to TJUN-ian shores. The era of Gus McKerrin, Jake Griffin and all the rest has certainly been a blast to follow thus far, but the GFA-TJUN-ia don't want to become a team where we are good - but not good enough to make the playoffs. Gus knew that if he couldn't get it done this time around, in a campaign where it was mathematically impossible to go 7-3 for the 3rd straight year, then his position may be under consideration. With this in mind and with some new threads to show off, your 15th ranked Jags took to the field to take on 24th ranked Greater Vakolicci Haven on Opening Day.

This contest would be very tight in the first half as both defences were very much clutch out there. Mohammad Al-Khalifa and his counterpart were throwing up brick walls and there was nothing that either P.J. Swarts or his counterpart could make up in order to break them in the first quarter, resulting in an unappealing deadlock. The 2nd quarter would see more of the same until just before half time when GVH found a way to sneak into the endzone on a 3rd and Goal. The field goal was good and TJUN-ia entered the break 7-0 down - not the best start but certainly not the worst.

The second half would bring some joy as TJUN-ia woke up and began to play some great football out there. Griffin was throwing more first downs and the offence was finally starting to click. It resulted in our first touchdown as Griffin found the ever-reliable Hubert Valois with 3 minutes left in the 3rd. Chi On-Ma took and made his first kick of the campaign and heading into the 4th, we were tied at 7-7. The momentum was with the Jags, however, as Chi scored a 34-yard FG with 5 minutes to go and great defensive plays from Jester Carter and the gang iced this contest for good in The Gardens. It was tight, but TJUN-ia started on the right track with the 10-7 victory.

We have to settle for 2nd for now, but there will be opportunities to prove ourselves once again. Up next is our first road game of the season, travelling to a crushed unranked Saint-Domingues for their first home game ever. It certainly will be an interesting one here and with the team playing in black for the first time, it will be interesting to see what that brings to this contest. GO JAGS!

6-9. Nice? No, not really. The St. Kanye Surge, the twelfth best national gridiron team in the world, visited the debuting South Newlandia Elephants for their World Bowl XLI opener, only to lose by that score. "There's really no good way to look at it," said Surge head coach Jeff Delphine. "That was an embarrassment for us. A truly ugly game, that I feel the Elephants themselves would be inclined to agree with me." There were only four scoring plays in the game, the last three being field goals.

St. Kanye won the toss and had the chance to jumpstart the scoring. But running back Noah Sherman fumbled at the Elephants' 35, and they were the ones who recovered. After a couple of three and outs, one from each team, South Newlandia would finally draw first blood with a pass from Robert Stein to Antonio Kinney. The ensuing extra point would be blocked, but it didn't matter. The newcomers now lead 6-nil.

2Q STK field goal Rasputin 48 SNL 6-3
In the second quarter, both offenses again fell flat; only a long kick from the Surge's James Rasputin with less than a minute remaining prevented them from entering halftime scoreless.

3Q SNL field goal Corbett 31 SNL 9-3
Once again, a field goal, this time courtesy of Rasputin's counterpart from the home team, Abdul Corbett. Both teams got chances to score touchdowns in the third period, but unfortunately, both blew it. A deep pass from Stein to Christian Perry was intercepted by Oliver Law, while the Kanyeans fumbled for the second time in the match as quarterback R.J. Linetti got nailed by nose tackle Matthias Petersen.

4Q STK field goal Rasputin 45 SNL 9-6
At the start of the fourth, Rasputin would again decrease the lead to three with his second FG of the day. The Elephants just needed to hold on until the end for the upset win, and they did so, and at home at that. Around 6,500 fans, many of them locals, were in attendance at Elephant Field.

The Surge will take a break for the next matchday. When they return, their opponent, which they'll be facing in the friendly confines of the Pencurve Arena in Kardashia, is the team from the Desiccated States. This is another bunch of newcomers to the international gridiron scene, but despite this, they put up a good fight against the Kohnhead Brains and only lost narrowly, 23-30. "We're not gonna slack against these guys," said QB Linetti. "Anything can happen, and I'd say us dropping our opener against an unranked side proved it. We're gonna use that bye to prepare, practice more, gather some info, watch some tape. Basically anything and everything to prevent what happened today from happening again. We can't afford to be in an 0-2 hole, especially not in what looks to be a really competitive group."

Now let's have a look at other groups:

- Abanhfleft, St. Kanye's former group stage opponents, destroy host nation Chromatika 20-nil.
- The Surge aren't the only high-ranked squad to be beaten by a debutant, as the world #8 Banija SerpentEagles get upset by Appalachia 3-nil after extra time.
- The Cassadaigua Fillies, defending champs and top team in the world, begin their campaign with a 32-20 victory over the Sarzonia Stars.
- Northwest Kalactin record the biggest beatdown of the day at thirty-four points, winning 43-9 over the Sword Island Sabers.
