Security Services were on high alert in the capital, Lomapolis, today as Lemmingtopias took on Bettisia in the 3rd Place Play-Off. Huge crowds around the country braved the cold and snow to watch the national Ice Hockey team play, with massive screens erected for the occasion. Although the crowds got rowdy as both the game and alcohol consumption intensified, the government was able to breath a big sigh off relief when no major incidents occurred.

Previously only a very niche sport in Lemmingtopias, interest in Ice Hockey has sky rocketed during the games and many municipalities are now considering the construction of facilities for play and training. Everywhere you look, people are taking advantage of the unusually cold winter to don ice skates. Even the Lemming Sage could be seen skating on a frozen lake with some other monks with hockey sticks apparently left behind by one of the eliminated teams, much to the horror of his minders. Rumours he spent the evening before drinking rum in the grand tent of the Bettisian Grand Duchess have been strongly denounced by some very anxious-looking Palace officials.

Whatever the truth in the matter, His Holiness opened the 3rd Place Play-off match with his usual graceful demeanor. He congratulated all the teams that had participated and said he was especially happy that Lemmingtopias would be in the top 4 and delivered a speech on 'The Power of Sport in Peace' before calling for further co-operation in sporting events in both Atlantis and beyond. Finally he announced the official theme for the year, an annual topic announced by the Sage determining the main focus of the Lemmingtopian religion and which is usually also adopted by the government to some degree, as 'Development in Sport, Development in Peace'.

With the Lemmingtopian team now ending it's journey in the Games, we look on towards the Ice Hockey Final and wish both Demonos and Madrocea good luck this afternoon.

[Baden-Wuerttemberg]

For many athletes and spectators from Baden-Württemberg, the Atlantis Winter Games are their first voyage overseas. Originating from a small landlocked country, many have never travelled on a larger vessel than a rubber dinghy before. Enthusiastic calls of 'Look, a whale!' from the voyage will remain cherished memories. It's not impossible that some of the observed spectator rowdiness has been caused by an element of exceptional vacation spirit within our delegation of, let's admit it, somewhat backwoods roots, as an reaction to being on unfamiliar turf and somewhat overwhelmed by the splendour of Lemmingtopian architecture.

The bobsleigh team would like to clarify that their pastel purple outfits are not an endorsement of any particular chocolate brand, but rather represents a pastel version of the national flag. (They thank the spectators for the chocolate gifts though.)

The ice skaters have never skated in such an immense arena before, and will recall the event with awe, back practising on their local frozen ponds and in their local arenas.

It is perhaps excusable that our skiing teams have been distributing tourism leaflets far and wide. For many of them, the skiing resorts in the Black Forest constitute their families' source of income, which they try to make the most of, while thinking of new possibilites in these uncertain times of climate change.

Our ice hockey players have brought various sets of their ornate hand-carved hockey sticks, the design and carving of which being a significant cottage industry. After the matches, they offer to exchange hockey sticks with the opposing teams as souvenirs.

The entire Ba-Wü delegation is feeling rather giddy and emotional, and appeals have been made to team captains and managers to prolong the visit with a little vacation time.

The Ski Demonstration event has been added to the Games as a way of a nod towards the tradition in the Lemming Mountains of different villages meeting together and wearing traditional dress while skiing in an artistic manner. It is not just an occasion of friendly rivalry between villages but also an important opportunity for villages to meet up and discuss issues of common concern, elect public officials, make business agreements and is also an important social event as many of the villages are essentialy cut off from each other for several months of the year and it is often a last chance to meet with friends or a first opportunity to do so after the paths clear. Many young people begin courtships or announce marriages at these festivals.

The judges for this event will be will be local people involved in the organising of these traditional events. (OOC: There is no scorination for this event and it is a way to acknowledge contribution to the games, either in their rolepay or ooc discussion across the games or for a stand-out RP post). The host nation will, of course, not be eligible for medals.)

Grand Duchess:

We, Bettisians, have thoroughly enjoyed our respite in Lemmintopias' mountain region.
The chance to meet our compatriots in friendly competition will be highly treasured by one and all.
We will go home with a renewed sense of self, as well as an appreciation of the endeavors of others.
The enjoyment, enthusiasm, and excitement of the Ba-Wu delegation will be a bar we will try to always meet.
The chaotic fun of the Demonos is a sight to be treasured for the ages.
The romance of the Disunited States of America is the stuff of, if not legend, then at least steamy novels.
The false beards of the Tropican Islanders has sparked a new trend in fall festival costumes.
The sportsmanship of the Madroceans, the untiring dedication of the Lemmintopians, are both ideals to be copied by all.

The chance to sit in a heated, but drafty, tent with other political and religious leaders was a highly appreciated event. My Dear Lemming Sage, if you ever wish for a 'Drink Off' rematch, just call!

I for one, know I speak for all of Bettisia when I say this has been a treasured experience and bring on the Spring games!

Thank you to the athletes, the coaches, the leaders, and most of all to the Lemmingtopians for ensuring that fair and entertaining sports were embraced by all who came. I toast you all, and YES the liquor is still flowing in my tent! Come one and come all to celebrate the end of a fabulous Winter Sport Fest!

Winter Games - Ice Hockey Final

For most fans, delegations, National Sports Organisations and Governments, Ice Hockey was the main event of this sports festival, (most people put it top in the skill allocations). Although every nation played hard and there were some great performances from across the groups and matches, only two could make their way to the final and only one can win the Gold and be declared the best Ice Hockey Team at the Games.
