LIVE COVERAGE: CALDIA vs HALLAND
FT: CAL 21-26 HAL
Welcome to the international and live coverage of Caldia vs Halland, in the DePex Stadium of Port Hope.

James Calick wrote:17:43 - Welcome to the live coverage feed of Caldia vs Halland, one of the most hyped matches of the tournament! The two giants are ranked one and two globally, with Caldia being the favourite. However, the tournament so far has shown that Halland may be the one to watch! The match will kick off at 6:00 local time. This is James Calick, reporting for WorldRugby from Satavia.

James Calick wrote:17:48 - Both sides will no doubt be packing quite the punch for this match. Winning this match would mean a lot to both teams, who thank's to their cultural similarities have one of the biggest friendly rivalries.

James Calick wrote:17:57 - The national anthem singing is almost over, with every ticket for this match sold out, this is the match we've all been waiting for.

James Calick wrote:18:00 - That's kick off! Caldia is starting with possession but is already starting at the 10 meter line, giving Halland a distinct advantage in the early stages of this battle.

James Calick wrote:18:02 - Halland are advancing further into the Caldish half with frighteningly quick speed. Caldia yet to organise an effective defence.

James Calick wrote:18:07 - Caldia have slowed the Hallandic advance, but not before Halland could reach their '22. Halland should be pleased with gaining this much ground so quickly.

James Calick wrote:18:14 - Caldish defence is getting sloppy and desperate as Halland push forwards. Insults being thrown, primarily by Caldia, at Halland.

James Calick wrote:18:15 - Halland really pushing on and on. Now at the Caldish '22.

James Calick wrote:18:17 - Scrum following knock on. Caldia to put in.

James Calick wrote:18:17 - Turnover following Scrum, Caldia now in possession.

James Calick wrote:18:21 - Halland taking possession again, stuck around the halfway line.

James Calick wrote:18:31 - Halland have just stormed past and straight into the Caldish try line!.

Try Bot wrote:TRY!

Halland - Jackson has scored a try! Score: 0-7

James Calick wrote:18:33 - Halland have converted it! Score: 0-7

James Calick wrote:18:40 - Half time and Caldia are 7-0 down! Not a particularly high scoring match so far, but certainly exciting! Halland have been dominant so far, but can Caldia pull something out the bag for the next half?

James Calick wrote:18:51 - Halland starting with possession. Dangerous for Caldia.

James Calick wrote:18:54 - Can Halland score another try that quickly? It appears they can!

Try Bot wrote:TRY!
18:58
Halland - Jackson has scored a try! Score: 0-12

James Calick wrote:18:59 - Converted by Halland! Score: 0-14

James Calick wrote:19:04 - A Caldish player, Aonghas Mag Uidhir, has been badly injured. Paramedics have put up a banner around him, something not done unless it's pretty serious.

James Calick wrote:19:05 - Play suspended, looks like a leg breaker. Possibly a bone, but must be pretty bad for a banner to be put up around him.

James Calick wrote:19:10 - He's been taken off the pitch on a stretcher. There's a bone sticking out of his leg. Ref's looking at TMO, as that must have been a hard tackle.

James Calick wrote:19:15 - Ref's ruled no serious foul play and the match will be continued. Timer: 10 mins deducted from timer. Play will continue until 17:40

Try Bot wrote:TRY!

Halland - MacArthur has scored a try and it's been converted! Score: 0-21

Try Bot wrote:TRY!

Halland - Jackson has scored a try and it's not been converted! Score: 0-26

James Calick wrote:19:29 - Caldia are being absolutely slaughtered here. Poor Caldia, came in seed number one but are being demolished by Halland.

James Calick wrote:19:31 - Caldia have the ball and are on a runner! This is crazy!

James Calick wrote:19:31 - Caldia so determined to get back. They have nine minutes and could bring a comeback!

James Calick wrote:19:31 - This isn't impossible - it's happened to Caldia before, where they've been down but have come back in the last ten minutes of the match.

James Calick wrote:19:31 - Oh my god! They're storming towards the try line, broken free. Hallandic players are to shocked to even do anything! How is that possible!

Try Bot wrote:TRY!
19:32
Caldia - O'Leary has scored a Try and it's been converted! Score: 7-26

James Calick wrote:19:33 - Halland now time wasting as Caldia are on absolute steroids flying in to try to get another try! They have seven minutes; can they score?

James Calick wrote:19:34 - Double edged sword for Caldia as ref announces ten minutes continuation extra time as press report Mag Uidhir serious bone injury, and tournament and rugby career over for foreseeable future.

James Calick wrote:19:34 - Caldia pressing forward with vigour unseen on this level in Rugby since the '90s.

James Calick wrote:19:37 - Halland just not making these crucial tackles as they seem unable to stop the Caldish advance.

James Calick wrote:19:38 - It's a belter! You just couldn't make this up! It's now possible that Caldia can equalise or even beat Halland in the remaining 12 minutes at this rate! This is unbelievable!.

Try Bot wrote:TRY!
19:38
Caldia - O'Leary has scored a Try and it's been converted! Score: 14-26

James Calick wrote:19:40 - This is already being coined as the "Greatest Match Ever" - the greatest try may have been with Alsland, but the match, oh boy, they have nothing on this!

James Calick wrote:19:40 - This match is making my career, I might be allowed to actually speak next time as opposed to doing this lousy texting thing!

James Calick wrote:19:42 - Caldia heading for Halland's try line again! They're angry, and in true Ghallish fashion are now completely terrifying and unstoppable!

James Calick wrote:19:44 - I had a choice between being a commentator for Cricket or Rugby - this is why I chose Rugby!

James Calick wrote:19:44 - The battle for a third Caldian try is in full swing, locked at Halland's try line

James Calick wrote:19:46 - So close! One more try and Caldia can claim a bonus point! Just one more try-etto... give it to me, try's fresh from Etruria

James Calick wrote:19:47 - They're doing it! This is madness! They are on the try line!

Try Bot wrote:TRY!
19:48
Caldia - Mac Donaill has scored a try! Score: 21-26!

James Calick wrote:19:49 - Holy Saint Chloe that was nuts! There's no more Caldia can give with the final whistle a minute away, but an unbelievable performance! This is the stuff of dreams!

James Calick wrote:19:50 - Full time there, possibly the most tense match of all time! Caldia will be thanking, this is going to sound awful, but they'll be thanking Halland for breaking one of their own's leg!

Dominant Performance Sees Pumas Defeat Alsland

SHAREImageImageImageImage

Image

The Pumas in action against Alsland last night.

The Pumas have fired the first shots among the top seeded teams at this year's Rugby World Cup with a dominant and confident 64-24 victory over second-lowest ranked team Alsland played at Port Hope International Stadium in the Satavian capital last night.

The game saw a capacity crowd attend the Pumas' first game under lights, where thousands of Nuvanians made the journey across the Van Horn Strait to attend the game, giving the Pumas a boost in support.

Team coach Stefan du Plessis said that he was pleased with the team's performance and said that it would be "sending a message" to the other teams that the Pumas were on their way.
"We're definitely playing better now," he said. "We're getting better results, we're gelling better as a team and it shows with the result tonight." du Plessis said that he was now going to concentrate on the upcoming match between the Pumas and hosts Satavia on Saturday, despite it being a pool match.
"We're not going to take any chances," he said. "Regardless of pool matches, I take any game against Satavia and other high ranked nations seriously. How well we play now will reflect on how well we need to play when it matters the most."

Last night's game started off much like the Pumas' opening pool game against West Miersa, in which Alsland took the Pumas by surprise with a fast and often surprisingly well executed game. The Pumas scored first blood after fifteen minutes when Duane Dikana went over after an impressive push by the Pumas' forward pack from the halfway line, with Eon Rautenbach called on to provide his conversion services. Alsland's Bendert Walstra, the new national hero after his performance against Satavia, scored the first try for Alsland thirty-one minutes into the first half, his efforts off the back of a surprisingly powerful maul. Alsland would score again six minutes later, owing to a mistake from the Pumas, Lou Visser going over the line for his first try of the world cup. Nuvania took a while to respond to the two Alish tries, and for a little while, it looked like the second lowest ranked team in world rugby might pull off the upset of the tournament. But it was not to last, Dikana leaping over the Alish line seven minutes before the end of the first half, equalling the scores. After Alish forward Anton Van Dam was caught holding the ball, the Pumas opted to take a penalty kick, with Reutenbach successfully making it and putting the Pumas into the lead in the dying minutes of the first half, the score 17-14 at half time.

The Pumas ran away with the game in the second half, scoring five tries that would have gone unanswered had Walstra not performed another heroic act thirty-nine minutes into the second half to give Alsland it's only try of the half. The Pumas opened the scoring with loose forward André Van der Vyver scoring his first try of the world cup. This was closely followed by Dikana's third try of the game, the first hat trick of the world cup to be scored. Winger Carl Van Rooy scored hist first try of the match ten minutes later, and this was followed up by Danie Erasmus demonstrating a turn of speed. The final try scored by the Pumas came from lock Sam Kagiso, who bulldozed his way through several Alish players to score between the posts. A late half push by Alsland saw the Pumas having to defend their 22 far more often than they would have liked, but this did not result in any more Alish tries. Markus Schaaf scored a drop kick in the dying minutes of the game, putting more points on the board for Alsland, but little could be done to stem the tide of Nuvanian try scoring.

The bonus point victory sees the Pumas remain at the top of Pool B, five points ahead of hosts and fourth-ranked team Satavia, whom the Pumas will play against in their final pool match in what will become the second Clash of the Titans pool match. Captain Pieter Scholtz said that the match would be "on everyone's mind" and that they would prepare much in the same way they would for international test games.
"We'll concentrate on what we know can work against Satavia, as well as what we've seen from them so far," he said. "I think it's going to be a good game, it's definitely going to be a close one."

The other Clash of the Titans game saw Halland hand Caldia its first defeat of the world, winning 26-21 in one of the closest games so far. In the other Pool A game, Rwizikuru dominated Montecara 15-0 to score its first victory of the world cup and to tie it with Caldia, although it's unlikely to progress into the quarter finals with Caldia still to play two more matches. Hosts Satavia defeated Mabifia 31-7 in the other Pool B game to consolidate their second place ranking. Pool C saw Garambura consolidate on its lead in the pool, winning its third pool game against Masari 13-5 in a less dominant display. Tengaria emerged from the closest game of the world cup so far to claim victory over 11-10, although it too is unlikely to progress. Estmere retained its lead in Pool D after beating Galenia 21-5. Soravia won its first game of the world cup, edging out Gaullica 26-21 to put it second in Pool D over Azmara. Soravia has a must-win match against Galenia on Sunday if it wants to progress into the quarter finals, while Azmara has two matches up it sleeve to secure a quarter-final spot, although it faces pool leaders Estmere on Saturday.

Live coverage of the Pumas game against Satavia will be provided by NBC/NUK Sports, and delayed coverage on NTV. NuSports will also be providing both Asteriaans and Estmerish language streams on its website.

CALDIA'S COMEBACK IN HALLAND MATCH OVERSHADOWED BY MAG UIDHIR'S INJURY

21 January 2021 | Port Hope, Satavia

Image
Aonghas Mag Uidhir was taken off on a stretcher after a nasty leg break took him out of the game.

PORT HOPE – Despite a rocky start in yesterday's match against Caldish frenemy Halland, the team had a comeback of epic proportions that nearly tied the match. However, the team's roaring comeback has been overshadowed by a devastating injury for Aonghas Mag Uidhir.

The twenty-six year old flanker made his first debut at the World Cup this year. His injury could also make this year's tournament his last.

Just minutes after Halland looked poised to blow out Caldia, scoring 14 to Caldia's 0, Mag Uidhir went down. Paramedics hurried onto the pitch and the match was paused. Fans grew silent as paramedics put a banner up around him. After six minutes of anguish, he was taken off the field on a stretcher. It was then revealed he had broken his leg, and bone was exposed.

It is a devastating and potentially career-ending injury. Referees, however, found no foul play and tacked 10 minutes of playtime onto the end of the match. At that point, it seemed Mag Uidhir's harrowing injuring would be the match's main event. Within minutes of resuming play, Halland had run the score up to 26-0.

That lead proved to be short-lived. Caldia came roaring from behind, securing three late tries. As Satavian announcer James Calick remarked: "this is the stuff of dreams!"

The team's incredible comeback and strong endgame is exactly what fans were hoping to see at this year's cup. Caldia is the reigning champion and is fighting to defend the title, and secure their fifth cup. While the team lost, they turned a near blowout game into one that came close to breaking even.

"If we had just five or ten more minutes, I am confident the score would have favored us" Head Coch Tadhg Mac Domhnail told the press after the match.

"The team rallied, and they rallied hard. That is the team I brought with me to Satavia. That is the team I know will come to play this weekend".

Mac Domhnail expressed his concerns for his injured flanker, calling his injuries "heart-breaking".

"The team is one hundred and ten percent behind him, no doubt about it. We are all hoping for a quick recovery and hope to have Aonghas back with us for the next cup".

Despite the loss, Caldia is still well positioned within Group A to make it to the knockoff stage. The team will face off with Montecara on Saturday and Etruria on Sunday before the close of the group stages.

LIVE COVERAGE: SATAVIA vs NUVANIA
FT: SAT 9-6 NUV
Welcome to what will be one of the most contested matches for this World Cup. The match will begin at 18:00 local time. This match will also decide wether Satavia wins Pool B - a victory for Satavia would place them at 14 points, to Nuvania's 15, but Satavia have one more match to play - against West Miersa.

James Calick wrote:17:00 - Welcome to the early coverage of the most anticipated match in the Group B pool - Nuvania vs Satavia. Currently, Satavia have the means to win this pool if they win this match - and technically, even if they don't, they will be able to draw in the pool. If a draw does happen, the teams will have to play each other again. The team that wins the pool will progress to the Quater-finals to play the runner up of Group C - the one who comes second will play Garambura.

This match is also anticipated because of the Pumas vs Dolphins rivalry, but also because Warwick's side did beat Nuvania earlier this year to take the Asterias Cup - ending their five year winning streak. Both teams have played well overall, with both Nuvania and Satavia dominating over Mabifia and Alsland in the pool.

I'm James Calick, reporting from the DePex Stadium in Port Hope, with an audience of 60,000 people. The match will begin in an hour's time.

James Calick wrote:17:30- Both teams are getting ready to come out. The mood in the Stadium is tense, as fans from each team stare off. Police filtered fans by which team they were supporting as they came in, due to fears of possible violence. Whilst the two nations in reality are very close, when it comes to sport the situation could not be more different.

James Calick wrote:17:54- National anthem singing beginning now. Starting with Nuvania and "Die Stem van Nuwanië". This'll be followed by Satavia and "All Earthly Things Above".

James Calick wrote:17:59- Teams are now lined up and ready as kick off is just a minute away. Match timings are: First Half 6-6:40; Half Time: 6:40-6:50; Second Half: 6:50-7:30

James Calick wrote:18:00- And that's kick off! From Nuvania, straight into the arms of Warwick (15).

James Calick wrote:18:02- Warwick (15) has decided to carry. We're now at the half way line and entering phases.

James Calick wrote:18:06- Still locked at the half way line. Satavia has possession, and despite repeated attempts are failing to break through Nuvania's solid defence.

James Calick wrote:18:11- Satavia's Goodwin (8) attempting to blast his way through Nuvania's defensive line but it's far to solid.

James Calick wrote:18:17- Nuvania, whilst they are being slowly pushed back, could hold this for months it seems. There's no touching this.

James Calick wrote:18:18- Goodwin (8) has broken through on the centre. A solid tackle by de Beers (1) has grounded him for now.

James Calick wrote:18:19- It's a good quick pass out by Macey (12) towards the Wilkie (14). Very impressive, Nuvania too slow to react.

James Calick wrote:18:21- They've bolted! Reeve (10) has it and is heading towards the try line!

James Calick wrote:18:22- It's an amazing bit of play! A good tackle from Nuvania though has stopped them at the 5 meter line.

James Calick wrote:18:24- Satavia won't be able to get a try now that the heavy Nuvanian defence is in place though.

James Calick wrote:18:29- Warwick (15) has moved forward. Unusual for a fullback, unless they've got something planned.

James Calick wrote:18:31- Van der Beek (7) passing it backwards to Warwick (15).

James Calick wrote:18:31- Warwick (15) taking a drop goal and he's got it!

Try Bot wrote:DROP GOAL!
18:31
Satavia - Warwick (15) has scored a drop goal! Score: 3-0

James Calick wrote:18:32- Something's happening in one of the stands that's caused the ref to pause the game. We're not sure what at the present time.

James Calick wrote:18:34- Police are now entering the stand. It appears to be a scuffle, we're not sure wether it's between fans or what.

James Calick wrote:18:37- Some more punches are being thrown as Police are swarming the stand. The ref's pausing the game until 18:55, including Half Time. Player's leaving the field now. It seems to have got out of control.

James Calick wrote:18:55- Police have arrested six people and one person is needing medical attention. It seems an argument broke out between the Nuvanian and Satavian fans. The match is resuming until 19:45, to account for the ten lost minutes of the first half.

James Calick wrote:19:00- The players are doing a great job despite the interruption. Nuvania has possession.

James Calick wrote:19:04- de Beers (1) bashing his way through the Satavian defensive line.

James Calick wrote:19:06- Nuvania pulsing towards the Satavian try line. A try seems inevitable now

James Calick wrote:19:06- Satavia have caught up. Defensive line holding solidly.

Try Bot wrote:DROP GOAL!
19:09
Nuvania - de Pleffer (11) has scored a drop goal! Score: 3-3

James Calick wrote:19:13- Solid drop goal from de Pleffer their, not many other option. Some beautiful passes by Satavia in the field here.

James Calick wrote:19:16- Play still battling around the halfway line following the kick off. Nuvania and Satavia seem to be resigned to just scoring drop goals.

James Calick wrote:19:17- de Voors (12) seems to be lining up for a kick from the half way line. That's far to far for a drop goal, so I'd imagine he's going for the line out.

Try Bot wrote:DROP GOAL!
19:18
Nuvania - de Voors (12) has scored a drop goal! Score: 3-6

James Calick wrote:19:19- de Voors (12) has got it! That's amazing, from the halfway line! It's a shame this is going to be overshadowed by the idiots in the stands, because this match is amazing!

James Calick wrote:19:21- Satavia need to respond to that, and quickly. It's possible - both sides are playing fantastically.

James Calick wrote:19:24- Satavia suddenly breaking Nuvania at every corner. Whilst Nuvania are still hitting hard, Satavia may have just broken them.

James Calick wrote:19:27- Satavia now on Nuvania's try line once again. They can't seem to get a try in though.

James Calick wrote:19:29- Satavia are going for the easy drop goal again.

Try Bot wrote:DROP GOAL!
19:29
Satavia - Warwick (15) has scored a drop goal! Score: 6-6

James Calick wrote:19:29- And they've got it, bringing the score to 6-6.

James Calick wrote:19:31- Someone's going to have to break the equaliser if either side want's to win. Nuvania doesn't necessarily have to win - they, at the minimum, must draw.

James Calick wrote:19:37- Satavia once again on the offensive. They have ten minutes to score a try or a drop goal.

James Calick wrote:19:39- Passed back to Warwick - I think he's going for another drop goal.

Try Bot wrote:DROP GOAL!
19:39
Satavia - Warwick (15) has scored a drop goal! Score: 9-6

James Calick wrote:19:39- AND HE'S GOT IT! IT'S A BELTER!.

James Calick wrote:19:41- Just minutes to go and Nuvania is going for a desperate attack, but Satavia is holding strong.

James Calick wrote:19:44- Nuvania are agonisingly close to Satavia's try line. Satavia are denying them the opposition to pass the ball out though.

James Calick wrote:19:45- That's full time. Satavia have won, bringing the pool score up to 14-16 points, with Nuvania narrowly in the lead, helped, of course, by a bonus point.

Dolphins Down Pumas in Dissappointing Defeat

SHAREImageImageImageImage
Ricus de Beer (@RdeBeer)
25 January (1:00pm)|PORT HOPE

Image

A clean-shaven Stefan du Plessis reflects on last night's loss to the Dolphins.

Punters would be forgiven for thinking they were at a football match last night as Satavia continued its winning streak against Nuvania, winning the closely contested game 9-6.

Neither side scored nor conceeded a single try in what many have labelled as a repeat of the underwhelming performance that saw the Pumas lose the Asterian Cup for the first time in five years, and many are now wondering whether or not the Pumas have what it takes to progress through the knock-out stages of the World Cup.

Pumas coach Stefan du Plessis said that it was possible that the dominant performances of the last two games lulled Nuvania into a false sense of security, although he said the opening game against West Miersa was "likely a warning sign".
"I think we should have woken up to the fact that we were going into this world cup with a bit less wind in our sails after the Asterian Cup loss," he said. "But there's also that expectation that we'd do well against certain low-ranked teams and that really didn't eventuate with West Miersa. I think we need to wake up to the fact that we need to play better if we're going to bring the world cup home again."

It's a sentiment echoed among many who watched last night's game against Satavia, both at the DePex Stadium in Port Hope, and at home or in the many bars across the country. Although they wouldn't have thought anything was amiss, as at least half of the capacity 60,000 crowd at the stadium belted out Die Stem followed by an equally raucous rendition of the Satavian national anthem.

Things got off to a slow start and that's where it remained for the rest of the match, a probing attack by Satavia failed to materialise any gains for 22 minutes, until Dicky Reeve bolted through the Nuvanian defence only to be charged down and tackled five metres from the Pumas' try line. Nuvania's solid defence reassembled, putting away any chances of Satavia scoring for the time being. Dolphins captain Jonty Warwick punting the ball between the posts for a drop goal.

Soon after a scuffle broke out in one of the stands between Nuvanian and Satavian fans, the interruption lasting for ten minutes as police entered the stands to break up the fight, with six arrests made and one person needing medical attention.

Play resumed after half time, and the Pumas immediately began their counter attack, Bennie de Beers smashing his way through the Satavian line to almost set the Pumas up for a potential try, only to have a repeat of the first half play out, the Pumas denied a try opportunity as the Satavian defence solidified. Out of nowhere, Jan de Pleffer punted the ball between the posts to level the scores at three all. Play continued to be stuck around the halfway line until Hendrik de Voors, standing in for Eon Rautenbach, belted another drop goal from the halfway line, an unlikely play but one managed with an impressive kick.

This prompted a swift response from Satavia who looked like they were going to get away with it until they again were denied another try opportunity, Nuvania scrambling to hold the line. Warwick lined up for another easy drop goal to level the scores again at six all. Satavia looked to have the bit between the teeth as once again they launched another offensive into the Nuvanian half, hunting for that elusive try. But it was not to be, Warwick settling for another easy drop goal that put Satavia back in front. They would remain there for the rest of the game, Nuvania unable to bring anything back in the dying minutes.

Last night's game now leaves just two points between Satavia and Nuvania in Pool B, with one game left between the hosts and West Miersa, which seems likely to be a foregone conclusion given the better performance of the Dolphins throughout pool play. In the likely event that Satavia wins convincingly against West Miersa, Nuvania will face Pool C winners Garambura in their first knock-out match, the first match-up against the Bahian side since the 2009 Rugby World Cup. Garambura themselves put on yet another dominant display, beating Gapolania 35-5 to move nine points ahead of second-placed Masari. A Satavian win will likely see them at the top of Pool B, and from there they face whoever comes second in Group see, likely Bahian side Masari, but potentially Gapolania if the fellow southern hemisphere team can beat Cassier in Pool C's final game.

Du Plessis said that it was going to be an "interesting" game between Nuvania and Garambura given the Garamburans are ranked in the top 10 of international sides, as well as Nuvania's continued lacklustre performance.
"I think we've got a lot to look closely at howe we've peformed so far and reexamine our mindset if we want to be able to keep going," he said. "Garambura isn't going to be an easy match."

Elsewhere in Pool B, West Miersa struggled to overcome Alsland to pull off a three-nil victory, giving them their first victory of the world cup. In Pool A, Caldia inched closer to Halland after a stunning 21-0 victory over Etruria. In Pool C, Masari put an emphatic 13-5 win over Cassier to maintain their second place standing within Pool C, however that could be threatened with a likely Gapolandian victory over Cassier. In Pool D, Galenia surprised Soravia to win a closely contested 8-3 victory, one which does not change the outcome of Pool D's final placings.

All eyes will soon be placed on the quarter finals, scheduled to begin at the end of this week, with longstanding rivals Caldia and Estmere set up for a quarter-final stoush. Halland looks likely to face Azmara, and Satavia likely to face Gapolania, the first time since the semi-finals of the Asterian Cup late last year.

NBC/NUK will be providing live coverage of all this weekend's world cup action, as well as delayed coverage on NTV, with live streaming of all quarter final games available on www.nusport.co.nu.

RUGBY: Satavia 9-6 Nuvania
Satavia and Nuvania face off in tightly contested match

PORT HOPE, Hope Province-
Satavia and Nuvania faced off on Saturday after a short delay, with Satavia eventually seizing victory from the Pumas. What has been dubbed a repeat of the Asteria's Cup final, Satavia triumphed over their arch rivals, Nuvania.

Before the game even began, the mood was tense - with both sides even competing as to whom could sing their anthem the loudest - which in the end, Nuvania's "Die Stem" took. As the match began, Nuvania kicked the ball straight into the hands of Dolphins Captain Jonty Warwick - a mistake, to say the least. Despite Nuvania's kick being deep, Warwick carried the ball all the way to the halfway line before he was finally taken down. The match ground to a halt, with several Satavian pushes successfully rebuffed by Nuvania's solid defence. Arthur Goodwin, Satavia's eighthman, was even carried by the Dolphins in a desperate attempt to break the Nuvanian line but it was to no avail.

Nuvania continued to hold the line until the 18th minute, when Goodwin broke through. It seemed like he was going to be able to run the try in, but the quick thinking of Nuvania's Bennie de Beers grounded him. Satavia's quick rucking saw Edward Macey pull off a long pass out towards Aldous Wilkie, who was tackled but was able to offload to Dicky Reeve. Reeve was tackled in an excellent bit of play from de Beers, who grounded him just five meters from the Nuvanian try line. After ten minutes of desperate attempts to get across the Nuvanian try line (even a group charge), the ball was passed backwards to Warwick who scored a drop goal, putting Satavia up 3-0. Celebration for Warwick didn't last long however, after a fight broke out in one of the stands. Police had to break up the fight, as half time was called early and the players left the field.

Police arrested six and one person required medical attention. Play resumed at 6:55, with de Pleffer of Nuvania scoring a drop goal after realising that a try was going to take too long, or wasn't possible. It wasn't long until Nuvania scored again, once again a drop goal, by de Voors from the halfway line, just coming short of the current world record for furthest drop goal. The match heated up as Warwick put in another drop goal, after a repeat of the first half lead to Satavia being held up on Nuvania's try line, with one attempt so close that even the Nuvanian side thought it might have been a try until a TMO confirmed the contrary. Just ten minutes later, Warwick once again scored another easy drop goal as Nuvania's defence held strong. In the last minutes of the match, Nuvania were held up on Satavia's try line as Satavia desperately attempted to hold them at bay, denying the Pumas every opportunity to pass the ball out to a kicker.

If Satavia can beat West Miersa, then the Satavian side will have taken Pool B. If they do so, they'll have to play the runner up of Pool C whilst Nuvania plays Garambura.

Garambura sweeps Pool C with near-perfect performance to secure its spot in the knockout stages
Les Zèbres secured 19 of a possible 20 points available as they dominated their pool to an impressive end.
Qinani Magalela reporting from Port Hope, Satavia | January 27, 2021

Image
Tryscorer Taolo Kamzuni celebrates with the rest of the team in the 31-5 win over runners-up Gapolania.
Four years after their lacklustre performance on domestic soil came to a crashing end in the quarter-finals, the Garamburan national team emerges from the group stages in Satavia with their heads held high as they collected an impressive 19 points from 20 as they dominated their rivals in Pool C.

With 103 points scored and only 18 conceded, Les Zèbres rank highly amongst the twenty teams participating in this year's tournament both offensively and defensively.

Captain Jean-Loup Dupuy also put on an impressive kicking display, converting 12 of 14 tries and scoring three drop goals, pooling together an impressive 33 total points for the star man, a figure that puts him only behind winger Vuzumuzi Njokwénné (35), whose breakout tournament has put him on the radars of the world's rugby fans. Dupuy converted at a 100% rate against Tengaria (4/4), Cassier (4/4) and Gapolania (4/4), with a 0/2 conversion performance against Masari proving to be a mere blip in the hot form he finds himself in.

With their pool-topping performance, Garambura now faces three-time world champions Nuvania on January 30 at Northport's eponymous stadium on the northern coast of Satavia, who ended their group stage run on a low as they were beaten in a tryless performance against the hosts.

But Nuvanian coach Stefan du Plessis and his team will be far from an easy match. Ranked second, only behind Caldia, du Plessis has a point to prove that his team can secure their fourth world championship at this year's tournament.

Head coach Thabani Gininda said that his players needed to be "on top form" to pose a threat to the Asterian country, but also mentioned he has "full confidence" in his players to perform on the day.

"All I can ask is that the players perform at the level I know they can perform at, and give the effort I know they can give.", Gininda said in an interview with with Le Coq Sportif, "As a coach I can't ask for anything more."

Elsewhere in the tournament, Halland (20pts) and Caldia (13pts) progressed from Pool A, Satavia (19pts) and Nuvania (16pts) from Pool B, Gapolania (11pts) join Garambura (19pts) from Pool C, and Estmere (14pts) and Azmara (12pts) progress from Pool D.

With many of the usual suspects expectedly progressing, attention will almost certainly be directed in the directions of Azmara and Gapolania, whose underdog performances have secured them rare appearances in the knockout stages of rugby's premier international tournament, they face Estmere (Jan. 30 in Port Hope) and Halland (Jan. 29 in Port Hope) respectively.

AFTER A SWEEP OF MONTECARA AND ETURIA, CAN CALDIA TAKE ON ESTMERE?

Coach Tadhg Mac Domhnaill remains confident in his team as they head into tomorrow's match.

PORT HOPE – Caldia's roaring comeback after a bloody, nail-biting loss to Halland has left many fans optimistic for tomorrow's game with Estmere. Caldia clinched second in Pool A, beaten by Halland in the group stages.

The Caldish team hopes to build on their recent wins and secure their place in the next stage of the tournament. Caldia and their four titles are defending at this year's Rugby World Cup. Should they best Estmere, the Caldish team will advance and inch closer to their fifth title.

Head Coch Tadhg Mac Domhnail reiterated his confidence, telling reporters that "this team can handle Estmere".

"It might be tight, but we will come out on top. No doubt about it" he said.

Mac Domhnail will be retiring after this tournament due to health concerns, his final time with the team.

Aonghas Mag Uidhir, the twenty-six year old flanker who went out with a bone-break in the game against Halland, will sit out the rest of the tournament. His injury could be career-ending, Caldia's team doctor indicated.

The two teams, titans in North Euclean ruby circles, will face off at DePex Stadium in Port Hope tomorrow.

LIVE COVERAGE: GARAMBURA vs NUVANIA
FT: GAR 5-5 NUV
ET: GAR 8-5 NUV
Welcome to the live coverage of Garambura vs Nuvania, in the quarter-finals. The winner will play Caldia in the semi finals.

James Calick wrote:17:30 - Welcome! The match has kicked off now, with Garambura kicking to Nuvania.

James Calick wrote:17:32 - Some solid attacking from Nuvania in the first couple of minutes.

James Calick wrote:17:38 - A long pass has been intercepted by Dupuy of Garambura.

James Calick wrote:17:39 - Garambura have missed a good opportunity to exploit that intercept, Dupuy taken down almost as soon as he grabbed it. Some pretty good play from Danie Erazmus there.

James Calick wrote:17:40 - Entering more phases as we pass the ten minute mark. Neither side is able to break through. Garambura has possession still, keeping the ball from the intercept.

James Calick wrote:17:44 - Phase 7. Neither side cracking through each other. That famously solid Nuvanian defence is showing itself today.

James Calick wrote:17:47 - Phase 12. Garambura need to kick the ball out, away from the halfway line if they are hoping to get a try in before half time at this rate.

James Calick wrote:17:50 - Phase 16. Garambura appear to be lining up for a kick. They'll be hoping to gain a line out.

James Calick wrote:17:51 - It's a beauty of a kick! Line out is awarded to Garambura just by the Nuvanian '22.

James Calick wrote:17:53 - Garambura have won the line out.

James Calick wrote:17:55 - They're certainly being quick off the mark here. Passing out wide towards d'Amaritz.

James Calick wrote:17:56 - Where is the Nuvanian Defence? They're storming towards the try line!

James Calick wrote:18:03 - Kick off again. They've only got seven minutes until half time, with Garambura up 0-5 after failing to convert their try.

James Calick wrote:18:10 - Half time and Nuvania are behind. They'll have to pull out all the stops to be able to take out Garambura, who've been playing brilliantly.

James Calick wrote:18:20 - Match is about to resume. Nuvania will be hoping for a try or two this half.

James Calick wrote:18:24 - Nuvania seem to have the upper hand heading into this half. Already making gains in the Garamburan half.

James Calick wrote:18:27 - de Smidt (NUV) has carried the ball a further nine meters for Nuvania. They've reached Garambura's '22.

James Calick wrote:18:29 - Garambura holding off Nuvania at their '22. Nuvania tends to get irritated at this point.

James Calick wrote:18:31 - Nuvania pushing again. Garambura won't be able to hold this off for much longer.

James Calick wrote:18:34 - They're so close! Just need about half a meter for a try.

Try Bot wrote:TRY!

Nuvania - van der Sandt has scored a try! Conversion: Not Successful; Score: 5-5

James Calick wrote:18:39 - They've scored but bailed under pressure! Score's now been equalised at 5-5.

James Calick wrote:18:43 - Both sides locked around the half way line. We seem to have come back to what play was like at the beginning of this match.

James Calick wrote:18:49 - Still relatively little movement. Both sides are crashing against each other but neither are making gains.

James Calick wrote:18:53 - Both sides are desperate to get another try in. If neither side can, then it'll be extra time.

James Calick wrote:18:58 - The ball is still locked at the half way line. Unless either side can score a drop goal in two minutes than we'll have to go into extra time.

James Calick wrote:18:59 - Just one minute remaining on the clock!

James Calick wrote:19:00 - That's full time! Because this can't end in a draw, the teams have five minutes before ten minutes of extra time.

James Calick wrote:19:05 - The match is resuming now. They'll play ten minutes of extra time, and if nobody has won by then, we'll play ten minutes of "Sudden Death"! Exciting Stuff!

James Calick wrote:19:07 - Both teams will be hoping that they don't have to resort to sudden death, which can be brutal. Anything - a goal kick or a try could win them the match at this point, as long as they could resist the other team.

James Calick wrote:19:11 - Breakthrough from Dupuy! He's not going to be able to reach the try line though.

James Calick wrote:19:12 - He's going for a drop goal!

James Calick wrote:19:12 - Has he got it? We haven't had confirmation yet. Has he?

Try Bot wrote:DROP GOAL!
19:12
Garambura - Dupuy has scored a drop goal! Conversion: Not Possible; Score: 8-5

James Calick wrote:19:13 - Yes he has! He is the man of the hour! There's no coming back from this for Nuvania! Garambura have won, it's not possible for Nuvania to win now. They've been grounded, costing them what might have been a hopeful World Cup attempt!

James Calick wrote:19:14 - This will be so disappointing for Nuvania; it looked like they could have had the cup again this year. Garambura however have surprised all; they know what they are doing. They'll play Caldia in the semi's next week.

Pumas coach Stefan du Plessis sits in disbelief after losing 8-5 to Garambura.

Pumas fans have begun the mass exodus from Satavia after Garambura pulled out a drop goal to win the quarter final match against the Pumas at Northport Stadium in Northport last night

Hotels in Adamstown, Northport, and Port Hope have reported hundreds of people checking out and inquiries for flights to Nuvania have increased two fold, alongside increased lines at the ferry terminals in eastern Satavia after the 8-5 loss to Garambura. Many of the fans that are leaving expressed disappointment, some angry after the loss.
"It's a bloody disgrace," one man said. "They played like kak and they deserve to lose. I paid ƒ150 for these bloody tickets, what a waste of money!"

Tens of thousands of Pumas fans packed bars and clubs around the country to watch them take on one of the better ranked teams in world rugby, and one of the star performers of the world cup so far. There were scenes of shock when Garambura scored first, and pure joy when Nuvania evened the score. However, it was an overwhelming feeling of disappointment that Nuvania's journey through the world cup had ended, the first time the Pumas have failed to make it past the quarter finals since 2001, and the first time Nuvania has been knocked out of the knock-out stages by a Bahian team.

The game got underway at half seven with Garambura kicking off, Nuvania providing some initial hope for Pumas fans with solid probing attacks against the Garamburans, although an intercept by Garamburan captain Jean-Loup Dupuy, who attempted to make for the Nuvanian line but was quickly brought down by Danie Erasmus. Nuvania's defensive line remained solid until a kick into touch by Garambura secured a line out by the Nuvanian 22 line. Having won the line out, Garambura then made their way rapidly towards the Nuvanian try line, with lead Garamburan try scorer Perceval d'Amaritz crossing the line to put Gamarbura in the lead. Garambura missed the conversion, but had still put themselves up 5-0 at half time.

Nuvania came back into the second half with renewed vigour, making gains into the Garamburan half. A quick breakout by Alex de Smidt put Nuvania that much closer, the line rolling up and pushing Garambura further and further back, a display of power that Garambura often does not come up against. The push continued until tighthead prop Dian van der Sandt bulldozed his way over the line, scoring a try and briefly becoming a national hero in the process. Eon Reutenbach, who having a 100% conversion rate so far through the world cup, missed the conversion, underscoring the pressure the Pumas were under.

The game resumed with little progress by either side, both Garambura and Nuvania conceding turnovers and penalties in the tighest of contests. However, close to the second half ending, Garamburan captain Jean-Loup Dupuy broke through the Nuvanian defence and made for the try line. However, he was unable to make it in time, and opted for a drop goal, punting the ball between the posts and putting Garambura into the lead once again. The match ended with Garambura ahead 8-5, and tens of thousands of despondent Pumas fans leaving the stadium.

Pumas coach Stefan du Plessis said that the performance was better than that against Satavia but still lacked decisiveness, saying a number of opportunities to score tries were missed.
"I think we've got a lot of work ahead of us in terms of improving our game and getting better results," he said. "This showed that we simply can't rely on simply being bigger than the other players because they can exploit opportunities far better than we can." He said that the Pumas would need to rethink things tactically and look for improvements in how they handled different playing styles.
"What we're used to here in the Asterias is far different to what Eucleans or Bahians are playing," he said. "I think that we need to look at how they play and work on countering their advantages."

Captain Pieter Scholtz said that the team would be reflecting on a "disappointing" performance at the world cup, but remained upbeat about future prospects.
"I think there's still time to improve for the next world cup," he said. "A lot of the players in this team will still be around for 2025 and there'll also hopefully be new talent to replace old guys like me."

In the other quarter final today, current world champions Caldia edged out Estmere 19-17 in what was considered a close call for the Caldians, booking their place in the semi final against Garambura in the second semi-final. Elsewhere, Halland overcame a lacklustre Azmara 19-7 to go into their semi-final against hosts Satavia, who struggled to overcome Gapolania 14-10 in what is being regarded as one of Gapolania's best ever games.

NBC/NUK will have live coverage of Friday and Saturday's semi finals, with NTV providing delayed coverage. NuSport will also have live streams of both semi finals at http://www.nusport.co.nu.

LIVE COVERAGE: HALLAND vs SATAVIA
FT: HAL 12-13 SAT
Live Coverage brought to you by the SBC from Port Hope, Satavia.

James Calick wrote:17:20 - Welcome to the live coverage of the first of two semi-finals for the Rugby World Cup this year! Hosts Satavia will face off against Halland, currently the best performing team in the cup, to determine who get's sent to the finals! Both sides have played well this year; and whilst Halland is certainly better on paper, playing against the Dolphins in Satavia on Satavian Soil will certainly be a challenge. Of the nearly 70,000 fans packed into this stadium, it looks like there are certainly a much larger proportion of Satavian fans. I'm James Calick, in Port Hope, for the SBC.

James Calick wrote:17:23 - As guests, Halland shall sing first - an extraordinary rendition of the Hallandic national anthem, "Ode to the fallen".

James Calick wrote:17:25 - Now Satavia, with "All Earthly Things Above", one of the loudest we've had this tournament. Perhaps not as nicely sung as "Ode to the fallen" but certainly louder! The Head of World Rugby now coming out onto the pitch to wish both teams good luck, but as being Hallandic we all know who he'll be rooting for!

James Calick wrote:17:28 - Now for the coin toss. Halland's Captain MacArthur and Satavia's Captain Warwick talking to the ref.

James Calick wrote:17:29 - Halland have won the toss and have elected to receive, which is a bold decision as Satavia's team are lightweight but quick, and so should be able to catch up to the ball quickly.

James Calick wrote:17:30 - Kick off! Satavia kicking to the arms of Halland's Walters. It's a good kick, and catch for that matter.

James Calick wrote:17:32 - Going into contact just behind Halland's ten meter line.

James Calick wrote:17:33 - Halland have managed to retain possession, but Satavia are holding them firm.

James Calick wrote:17:35 - Halland are making sure they're keeping the ball close to their body. Satavia have a tendency to snatch.

James Calick wrote:17:37 - Rijnders (Satavia) smacking Garvey (Halland) quite hard in the tackle there, knocking the ball forward. Scrum for Satavia awarded.

James Calick wrote:17:38 - Ball's going in. Halland's pack is almost forty kilograms heavier than Satavia, so unless Satavia can get the ball out quickly Halland will dominate in this area.

James Calick wrote:17:39 - Collapsed scrum. Satavia were almost too weak to resist the enormous amount of pushing from Halland there.

James Calick wrote:17:41 - Ball is going in again. Satavia scrum half moved back, looks like in he's a position to pop the ball out.

James Calick wrote:17:42 - Oh it's magnificent play! Halland have just kicked a beauty of a box kick. They're making ground, no Satavian defenders. Warwick (Satavia) is too far back!

James Calick wrote:17:43 - Shame for Halland their, a poor decision by Zabadan (Halland) and he's just ran straight into Warwick (Satavia).

James Calick wrote:17:46 - Satavia are now holding their line firmly. Halland have possession, Satavia couldn't ruck over quickly enough to secure a turnover.

James Calick wrote:17:47 - Big tackle there. Quite a vicious breakdown, Ref is calling hand's away.

James Calick wrote:17:48 - It seems like Satavia have gained possession from that breakdown, but the Ref's not happy. He's called in TMO to determine if there's any foul play.

James Calick wrote:17:50 - No way that's fair. Big hand off from Jacobus Lowe (Satavia) in the face to Hogg (Halland). Ten minute sin bin, ball is returned to Halland.

James Calick wrote:17:51 - Satavia are now defending with a man-down. Halland to tap and play.

James Calick wrote:17:51 - What an idiot! What was going through Rudraigh's (Halland) mind! He's just blatantly passed the ball forward! That's a penalty kick for Satavia, on their 22.

James Calick wrote:17:52 - Satavia are in a corner though, not a lot they can do other than hope to gain ground.

James Calick wrote:17:54 - Its' a fine kick. Halland's Keenan's on it though.

James Calick wrote:17:55 - Failed tackle by Macey. Another failed tackle by de Witte.

James Calick wrote:17:55 - There's no stoping him. He's bearing down on the Satavian try line, Warwick rushing to reach him.

James Calick wrote:17:55 - And Warwick's tackled him on the line! Keenan's adamant it's a try. Ref's going to TMO.

James Calick wrote:17:57 - The ball's certainly across the line, but it doesn't look grounded.

James Calick wrote:17:57 - TMO seems undecided. It shows the ball crossing the line, but not wether it's grounded or not. It doesn't seem like there is enough downwards pressure.

James Calick wrote:17:57 - The Ref's decided that's a no-try! On the 22 meter line, Satavia to kick!

James Calick wrote:17:58 - That's certainly been a controversial decision. Hallandic fans now quite angry.

James Calick wrote:18:00 - It's a very good kick. Perfectly placed. Warwick is already ahead of the rest of the Hallandic team.

James Calick wrote:18:00 - Where is Keenan? Warwick is gaining on the ball, which is just sitting on the ground. He's probably the fastest player in international rugby, but you'd have thought that someone could catch him!

James Calick wrote:18:01 - Warwick's got the ball but Keenan is gaining! This has turned into a running race!

James Calick wrote:18:03 - He's so close! This is unbelievable!

Satavia - Warwick has scored a try and it's been converted! Score: 0-7

James Calick wrote:18:03 - Oh it's a good try! Only seven minutes to equalise before half time! The stadium have exploded!

James Calick wrote:18:06 - Halland are struggling to catch Satavia up. This is certainly exciting.

James Calick wrote:18:08 - Two minutes left of this half, and Halland are 7 points down. They aren't playing well today at all.

James Calick wrote:18:10 - Half time and Satavia is in the lead! This is very unexpected! Halland haven't been playing well, and they know it.

James Calick wrote:18:15 - Analysis: Halland aren't playing well. Satavia, however, are at their peak. Halland winning is expected; the odds of Satavia winning are 7:1, but more extraordinary things have happened in rugby, like the rise of Gapolania, for example, now one of the most respected teams globally for their "last stand" against Satavia last week.

James Calick wrote:18:19 - Satavia are going to receive now, an advantage for the team. Halland will be hoping for a quick turnover and then try, no doubt

James Calick wrote:18:20 - And there it is! If you're just joining us, the score is 0-7 to Satavia, who've just received from Halland.

James Calick wrote:18:20 - That kick has gone a bit wrong. It's the pressure, and the heat.

James Calick wrote:18:21 - Satavia making steady gains forward.

James Calick wrote:18:23 - Satavia now pushing into the Hallandic half.

James Calick wrote:18:24 - Halland being pushed back even further. They haven't got their defensive lines sorted, which is slightly ironic given their defence coach is a Satavian.

James Calick wrote:18:26 - This is getting painful to watch. Halland just can't work out a defence. They are tackling effectively, but not until each Satavian has made two or three meters of progress.

James Calick wrote:18:28 - Satavia are now at their ten meter line. A drastic decision is going to have to be made by Halland here.

James Calick wrote:18:28 - Halland "shoeing" in the ruck there. They may have to make drastic decisions, but not illegal ones.

James Calick wrote:18:29 - Not even this ref needs TMO for that, instant yellow for Malley (Halland).

James Calick wrote:18:30 - Malley needs to calm down. He's insulting the ref now.

James Calick wrote:18:31 - Ten mins in the sin bin for Malley but also a penalty kick for Satavia. Hallandic fans in the crows reckon the ref is biased, given some of the unsavoury things they're chanting now.

James Calick wrote:18:32 - ...and DROP GOAL!

Try Bot wrote:DROP GOAL!

Satavia - Dicky Reeve has scored a drop goal! Score: 0-10

James Calick wrote:18:34 - Halland choosing to receive, which now seems like the right decision

James Calick wrote:18:35 - Many are in disbelief! Satavia haven't played any better, it just seems like Halland aren't coping.

James Calick wrote:18:37 - Satavia are now struggling to push forward. It seems like Halland may have got their act together.

James Calick wrote:18:39 - It's at the halfway line, Halland with possession, seems like a kick attempt?

James Calick wrote:18:39 - The ball is sufficiently forward enough, Keenan has it and is going to score this time! He is determined!

James Calick wrote:18:40 - Keenan and Warwick about to meet - can Warwick get Keenan down?

James Calick wrote:18:40 - NO! All it took was a simple side step! Keenan is now on his merry way to the try line, untouchable!

Halland - Keenan has scored a try and it's been converted! Score: 7-10

James Calick wrote:18:44 - Satavia need to be getting worried now - the Caldish-esque comeback could be coming!

James Calick wrote:18:46 - Halland are amazing. They've just pushed back the Satavian again. They need only one try, converted or not converted, to secure this.

James Calick wrote:18:47 - That's nearly a try... and... they must have got that!

Halland - Walters has scored a try and it's NOT been converted! Score: 12-10

James Calick wrote:18:47 - Quick kick off and run for Satavia. They need to get a try or a drop goal to win this, and secure a place at the finals!

James Calick wrote:18:49 - Satavia are in the Hallandic half. They'll want a try over a drop goal, but they'll do what they can to win.

James Calick wrote:18:51 - Both teams now battling. Halland desperately trying to prevent Satavia from scoring.

James Calick wrote:18:55 - ARGH! I'm literally biting my nails! It's so close!

James Calick wrote:18:55 - Impartiality is the hardest thing.- Dali Lama

James Calick wrote:18:55 - I'm desperate for a try da ba de da ba di

James Calick wrote:18:55 - For legal reasons, that is a try for either team.

James Calick wrote:18:55 - Satavia are now on the Hallandic '22

James Calick wrote:18:57 - Three minutes. Satavia have possession. They can either kick back or go for the try.

James Calick wrote:18:58 - Two minutes. I think they're going to go for the drop kick, and Halland is going to try and stop them

James Calick wrote:18:59 - One minute. Still no drop goal from Satavia.

James Calick wrote:18:59 - Thirty seconds. Still nothing

James Calick wrote:18:59 - Passed back to Reeve

James Calick wrote:18:59 - AND WITH TEN SECONDS IT'S A DROP GOAL! OH MY GOD!
