HASCAR Challenge Cup (Super-Domestic Stock Car Racing)

OOC: While, typically, a domestic sports thread is closed to everyone but the thread owner, I am making an exception for this. I am calling HASCAR a "super-domestic" league as while all the events will be in Hapilopper and while most of the drivers will be Hapiloppian, anyone that competes in NSSCRA either currently or in the past are more than welcome to enter a car or a driver in the series. This league is meant to complement NSSCRA, and races will be held around the same time, and scorinated using xkoranate, albeit slightly differently than the way Newmanistan does NSSCRA. If you are interested in participating, send me a message in the NSSCRA discussion thread or on the NS Sports discord.

Welcome to the 2022 season for Hapilopper's top stock car racing league, the Hapiloppian Association of Stock Car Auto Racing, or HASCAR. The HASCAR Challenge Cup is one of the most competitive forms of motorsport across Hapilopper, and one of the most popular. Each race is watched by millions across the Dominion, and by hundreds of thousands of fans at each and every track on the calendar. Most, if not all of the teams competing in the series are fully-sponsored teams with some of the best drivers in Hapiloppian motorsport.

This season promises to be the most exciting season in HASCAR history. A handful of manufacturers - Preston, Primetime and Stevens have already engaged in an arms race of faster, more aerodynamic models, an arms race started when Preston unveiled the Super Skychief at the start of last season in NSSCRA and HASCAR. This season, Stevens has unveiled its new, more aerodynamic Sentry Mk.II, while Primetime Motorcar Company of Hapilopper City has unveiled its prototypeish Quest X, which has seen some complaints regarding its availability.

In addition, there are persistent rumors of other nations interested in competing in select HASCAR races. Adding some fuel to those rumors are recent reports of the similarities between HASCAR's technical regulations and NSSCRA's.

CURRENT TEAMS

These are the current teams scheduled to compete in some form or fashion in this season's Challenge Cup.

PRESTON TEAMS
These teams are utilizing the Preston Super Skychief, the new aerodynamic model from Preston Autos built specifically for use in HASCAR and the NSSCRA. The car is very aerodynamic and slippery in the air and has led to a full-fledged arms race in Hapiloppian motorsport.

TEAM BLUE - Based in Hapilopper City
Team owner: Amanda McAlister
By now, you know Team Blue - Hapilopper's de facto national auto racing team. Their HASCAR team - a team that has won numerous Challenge Cups since 1972, moved up to NSSCRA a few years ago, but has recently come back to compete in HASCAR full-time as well. Its NSSCRA drivers will likely compete in selected HASCAR races when able.
#8 - Mark Arbuckle - 24 years old, from Buckridge - Preston Autos Preston
#81 - Brooks Benson - 35 years old, from Surrey - Preston Autos Preston
(Part time cars: #08 - Drake Stevenson, #37 - Frank Bronson, #73 - Taylor Henderson)

HARRIS COMMUNITY MEDIA - Based in Pinkerton
Team Owner: Melvin Harris
One of the surprising stories of HASCAR is the team fielded by Harris Community Media, a group that runs a collection of small-town newspapers in and around the Pinkerton area. The newspapers have been wildly successful as they cover their local areas in a way that nobody else can. But perhaps what they do is their biggest setback - there's not much money in local newspapering and it'll take a huge sponsor to take them to the next level. Expect sponsorship to come from HCM's papers, including the Pinkerton Daily Journals and the Sparks Picayune from the city of Sparks (pop. 3,450), 35 miles north of Pinkerton. Last season, the team pulled off its biggest triumph, winning the HTN 500 at the Hapilopper National Exhibition.
#00 - Colin Meredith - 35 years old, from Pinkerton - Harris Community Media Preston
#0 - Alex Remington - 27 years old, from Sparks - Harris Community Media Preston

TURKINGTON SPORTS TEAM - Based in Hapilopper City
Team Owner: Brad Turkington
This team has mostly existed thanks to the generosity of drivers who have paid their way into their seats, rather than any on-track performances. The same is true this year as two drivers have brought some nice sponsorship packages with them for a full ride for this season. Brad Turkington, the car owner, is known for his involvement in the community, such as the "Turkington for the Kids" program, which helps keep underprivileged youth in school.
#26 - Darcy Florence - 34 years old, from Pinkerton - Whackadoo's Preston
#36 - Zack Cropper - 41 years old, from Hapilopper City - Hydroceramic Parts Preston

NORMANDY MOTORSPORTS - Based in Buckridge
Team Owner: Cassandra Normandy
Normandy Motorsports, which has been around since the late 90s, has seen its share of ups and downs. Under the team's new owner, Cassandra Normandy, the team has switched from the old Hamilton Privilege to the Preston Super Skychief, with hopes the new car will produce more results for them in the future.
#28 - Max Alger - 26 years old, from South Hampton - Seton Boats Preston
#82 - Lloyd Clarence - 53 years old, from Hapilopper City - Central Brands Preston

STEPHEN SANFORD RACING - Based in Buckridge
Team Owner: Stephen Sanford
One of several single-car outfits in HASCAR, Stephen Sanford Racing has previously flown under the radar in the series, but with a new driver and a new, controversial sponsor, the team will likely gain a great deal of attention. Sanford hired 23-year old Jonah Spencer and signed a one-year deal with Green Dispensaries of Hapilopper, an organization taking advantage of the nation's legalization of recreational marijuana.
#42 - Jonah Spencer - 23 years old, from Buckridge - Green Dispensaries of Hapilopper Preston

THE FOREST RIDERS - Based in Hapilopper City
Team Owner: Forest Rider
Let's just go on record and state that "Forest Rider" is not this driver's real name, but he has asked we not use his real name because his family would rather him not go out and race. Whatever the reason, Forest Rider is in his first season of HASCAR racing, and at 24, could be a real talent for the future. But a single-car self-owned team is a long way from Team Blue or Oliver Marlin's team. Forest has also picked up sponsorship from another marijuana dispenser.
#65 - Forest Rider - 24 years old, from Hapilopper City - Greenman's Dispensers Preston

(Other part-time teams: #54 - Scott Hawking, Warner Hall Pizza Preston; #55 - Buddy Charlton, Wolff Preston of Hapilopper City Preston; #56 - Chris Holmes, Good Motor Oil Preston; #68 - Clayton Smith, Unsponsored Preston)

MAJOR MOTORS TEAMS
The biggest auto manufacturer in Hapilopper, Major Motors and their sleek, smooth Excelsior has attracted a large contingent of teams that compete in HASCAR. Some of these teams are as prominent as Fishman Motorsports, while others just fly under the radar. Major Motors has made it clear that they want to beat out Team Blue this season in one form or fashion and try to convince the NSSCRA that one of their teams should compete in the series. But it might not be the NSSCRA's or HASCAR's decision to make.

HENLEY MOTORSPORTS - Based in Hapilopper City
Team Owner: John Henley
John Henley, who owns a moving-van company and a collection of automotive dealerships all around Hapilopper, has had a long-time interest in motorsport. His team, a fully-sponsored one, is expected to compete near the front of the field this year. Known for his obscene attention to detail and preparation.
#2 - Jermaine Walton - 34 years old, from Kingsland - Booth Foods Major
#12 - Craig Martin - 39 years old, from Garvinson - Good Motor Oil Major

BROWNLOW RACING TEAM - Based in Buckridge
Team Owner: Pat Brownlow
Patrick Brownlow is one of the old guard in HASCAR Racing. Until Ken Henson was ousted in an inner-team coup last year, Brownlow had been the second-longest tenured team owner in HASCAR racing. He has employed two very competent drivers who he feels can win races, both of which have competed near the front in the past and both of whom have full sponsorship.
#5 - Derek Washington - 30 years old, from Hapilopper City - Cozy's Mattresses Major
#6 - Bret Summerfield - 45 years old, from Hapilopper City - Tinker Oil Change Major

RAFFERTY RACING TEAM - Based in West Hampton
Team Owner: Wade Rafferty
Wade Rafferty is one of several owner-drivers that compete in HASCAR. Driving a Major Excelsior, he is not expected to compete near the front of the field, but anything can happen in this wildly unpredictable world of HASCAR racing. Rafferty is a member of the West Hampton City Council and is expected to be re-elected for another term.
#11 - Wade Rafferty - 47 years old, from West Hampton - Mark Taylor's Bourbon Whiskey Major

FISHMAN MOTORSPORTS - Based in Hapilopper City
Team Owner: Jack Fishman
The de factor Major Motors factory team, Fishman Motorsports is one of the oldest teams in HASCAR racing, having been around since 1985. Jack Fishman, a former drag racer and airline pilot, is one of the top Major Motors loyalists and is one of the most outspoken team owners in Hapiloppian motorsport. Look for his teams to contend week in and week out.
#14 - Eric Royceston - 29 years old, from Border City - Venerable Television Major
#15 - Hayden Parker - 34 years old, from East Hampton - Auto Dealers of Hapilopper Major
#16 - Julie Forest - 22 years old, from Kingsland - Auto Dealers of Hapilopper Major

THOMAS MOTORSPORTS - Based in Buckridge
Team Owner: Tom Thomas
Thomas Motorsports has recently benefitted from a massive sponsorship deal from Good Times Breweries, a Buckridge-based beer known for its smooth, easy-drinking flavor. Tom Thomas, the team owner, has vowed his team will be in the hunt for race victories this year with the huge sponsorship deal. The jury, however, is still out.
#24 - Kurt Jernigan - 39 years old, from Surrey - Good Times Draft Lager Major
#25 - Virgo Eustis - 28 years old, from Kingsland - Good Times Light Beer Major

OZSPORTS - Based in North Hampton
Team Owners: Osborne Family
The Osborne family, who used to own a prominent Major Motors dealership in North Hampton, has gone stock car racing with a big hope for the future, Gabe Osborne. Osborne hopes for a lot of success this year, but Ozsports equipment is very much an unknown commodity.
#30 - Gabe Osborne - 22 years old, from North Hampton - Hapilopper Natural Gas Major

TERRELL RACING - Based in Hapilopper City
Team Owner: M.J. Terrell
52-year old Michael Jordan Terrell, a longtime journeyman of Hapiloppian motorsports, will be competing in his last season of HASCAR racing this season. Terrell is a veteran of some 863 HASCAR starts, with zero wins and a best finish of 2nd to his credit. That runner-up finish took place back in 1995 at the Perimeter 400 in Surrey, when Terrell was passed with just six laps to go by a hard-charging Chet Byrd.
#70 - M.J. Terrell - 52 years old, from Hapilopper City - Full Lube Oil Change Major

LEONARD MOTORSPORTS - Based in Hapilopper City
Team Owner: Bob Leonard
Bob Leonard, once one of the top team owners in Hapiloppian motorsports, has longed for the better days for quite a few years - 1997, to be exact, when his team ran away with the HASCAR Challenge Cup. Since then, his team has steadily fallen down the grid. But he's hoping for a miracle with a young, hungry rookie in Chris Hawkins. Hawkins, a late model ace from the Hampton Cities, is looking for a fast start to his HASCAR career. Already, he's made quite a name for himself, and that owes largely to those Turkey's Burgers commercials he's appeared in.
#95 - Chris Hawkins - 20 years old, from South Hampton - Turkey's Burgers Major

REDWAYS VAN LINES - Based in Buckridge
Since the 1960s, Redways Van Lines, one of the leading relocation companies in Hapilopper, has owned a team in the HASCAR Challenge Cup. For the last ten years, their driver, Rupert Cornell, has driven very reliably for the Redways team and their familiar red-and-white Major Excelsior. Probably not expected to be a consistent front-runner, but stranger things have happened.
#99 - Rupert Cornell - 42 years old, from Buckridge - Redways Hapiloppian Major

(Other part time teams: #04 - Emmett Hayward, Hayward Trucking Major; #05 - Trevor Hutson, Unsponsored Major; #21 - Mason Bryson, Major Car Service Major; #33 - Jude Burton, Hapilopper 1st Nat'l Bank Major; #35 - Andre Courtney, Swift Airlines Major; #39 - Sam Maverick, Buckridge Tourism Authority Major)

STEVENS TEAMS
The teams that run equipment from Stevens Automotive Manufacturing have plenty to be happy about. For starters, as part of Hapiloppian stock car racing's arms race, Stevens has recently unveiled the new Sentry Mk.II, a car that Stevens racing head Clive Buckner says "is the Super Skychief killer." And sure enough, the Mk.II Sentry, with more aerodynamic lines inspired by the Super Skychief, is a car that has demonstrated a lot of potential in recent preseason tests. The new Mk.II will be run by the Farnham Racing Team and Oliver Marlin Racing while the other Stevens teams will run the Mk.1 for the first few races.

FARNHAM RACING TEAM - Based in Buckridge
Team Owner: Gary Farnham
The Farnham Racing Team, one of the top two "works" Stevens teams, has reupped with Hobbs Beer, one of Hapilopper's more popular breweries. The team is expected to compete with the top teams in Hapilopper this season, with the assistance of Matt McKinley, a three-time HASCAR race winner and Nolan Kingsley, who came agonizingly close to winning the Challenge Cup in 2019. Both men drive fully-sponsored Hobbs Sentries this season.
#4 - Matt McKinley - 31 years old, from Peoria - Hobbs Low Life Beer Stevens Mk.II
#44 - Nolan Kingsley - 34 years old, from Buckridge - Hobbs Pale Ale Stevens Mk.II

MILBURN RACING - Based in Hapilopper City
Team Owner: Arnold Milburn Sr.
Milburn Racing, a family-owned outfit, has been loyal to the Stevens brand for a number of years, but some of that trust may be eroding when they were informed that they would be passed over for the new Mk.II Sentry. That could lead to some frustration among the team, feeling like its loyalty to SAM has not been properly rewarded. Arnold's son, Arnold Jr, is the sole driver on the team.
#9 - Arnold Milburn Jr. - 28 years old, from Hapilopper City - Seaside Seafood Stevens Mk.I

TK RACING - Based in Buckridge
Team Owner: Travis Kensley
TK Racing, another single-car Stevens operation, is a relatively new operation in the world of Hapiloppian motorsport, and is owned by the heir to the Westwood Fuel heir Travis Kensley. A team looking to have fun more than anything else, TK Racing is not expected to perform up front in races, even though its driver, Karl Flynn, has won HASCAR races in the past.
#10 - Karl Flynn - 34 years old, from Garvinson - Westwood Fuel Stevens Mk.I

OLIVER MARLIN MOTORSPORTS - Based in Hapilopper City
Team Owner: Oliver Marlin
Perhaps the pick to win the Challenge Cup this year are the Mk.II Sentries from Marlin Motorsports, a team with three full-time sponsored teams and three of the top drivers in Hapiloppian stock car racing - Tyson Hoyt, the outspoken "bad boy" of HASCAR racing, Wes Lawson, a perennial contender and Ray Harding, a top rookie candidate. Expect big things from Marlin Motorsports this year.
#18 - Tyson Hoyt - 29 years old, from Hapilopper City - Jimmy's Sweets Stevens Mk.II
#19 - Wes Lawson - 38 years old, from South Hampton - Southside Bank Stevens Mk.II
#20 - Ray Harding - 19 years old, from North Hampton - Southside Bank Stevens Mk.II

(One part time team: #02 - Grady Sumner, Buckridge Stevens Dealers Stevens Mk.I)

HAMILTON TEAMS
The distant fourth manufacturer of the customer manufacturers that compete in the Challenge Cup, the teams that run the Hamilton Privilege have been crying out for a new model for some time, but those cries have fallen on deaf ears. There is reason to believe that those that run the Hamilton Car Company have very little interest in big-time auto racing in Hapilopper, which is a shame, given the popularity of the sport in the Dominion. As a result, one team could be a fringe contender while the others aren't expected near the front. The Hamilton Privilege has not won a HASCAR race since 2014, and that is not expected to change this year.

BARDSLEY MOTORSPORTS - Based in Hapilopper City
Team Owner: Pete Bardsley
Perhaps the only Hamilton team to be considered contenders, even a little bit, Bardsley Motorsports will be the top team fielding the outdated Privilege, a model that dates back to the 2012 season, and the only one fielding a multi-car effort. Team owner Pete Bardsley has considered abandoning the Hamilton marque and moving to Preston Super Skychiefs, a move that could come as soon as midway through this season. It could be the best move for his two very talented drivers, Daniel Benson and Roger Adams.
#1 - Daniel Benson - 32 years old, from West Hampton - Monday Afternoon Stores Hamilton
#3 - Roger Adams - 35 years old, from Pinkerton - Lopper Beer Hamilton

PETERMAN TRUCKING COMPANY - Based in Buckridge
Team Owner: Milt Peterman
Milt Peterman, the oldest team owner in the Challenge Cup at 87, has involved himself in Hapiloppian stock car racing about as long as he can remember, and has been a loyal Hamilton Privilege team owner, dating back to the days when the Privilege was the car of choice. But that was so many years ago. Times have changed, and the team has since lost its edge it once had.
#7 - Arch Dudley - 49 years old, from Buckridge - Peterman Trucking Hamilton

BECKMAN RACING - Based in Buckridge
Team Owner: Jack Beckman
Another single-car Hamilton team hoping for something good from the Hamilton brass, Jack Beckman is not optimistic, though. The team has marginally-full sponsorship from Darwin's, a popular all-night diner well liked by the HASCAR circus. Driver Kirby Lester, a journeyman driver, has competed in the Challenge Cup for over 20 years, but has zero wins to his credit. That is not expected to change this year.
#22 - Kirby Lester - 47 years old, from Washington - Darwin's Restaurant Hamilton

PRIME QUEST TEAMS
Well... there's just one. That's because the Primetime Motorcar Company has limited who gets their support to just the factory team, but the team is likely to compete with the new Prime Quest X, another car presented as a "Super Skychief Killer," and it shows, with a very distinctive look, unlike any of the other cars in the series, even as HASCAR stock cars start to look more and more exotic. The car, and the team, could prove to be highly controversial, as questions linger over how available the Prime Quest X is to the consumer.

PRIMETIME MOTORCAR COMPANY - Based in Hapilopper City
Manufacturer Representative: Bob Hernandez
#50 - Owen Archer - 30 years old, from Hapilopper City - Primetime Motorcar Company Quest X
#51 - Gary Savidge - 28 years old, from East Hampton - Primetime Motorcar Company Quest X
#52 - Rudy Albertson - 29 years old, from Kingsland - Primetime Motorcar Company Quest X

ALBERTSON, PRIMETIME WIN POLE FOR SEASON OPENER

WEST HAMPTON -- Rudy Albertson, driving one of three factory Prime Quest Xs for the Primetime Motorcar Company, snagged the pole position for the season-opening Westwood 500, to be held on Sunday at the West Hampton Motor Speedway.

Albertson blitzed under the timing lights at 28.304 seconds, or 190.785 miles per hour, to take the pole. Virgo Eustis, driving for Thomas Motorsports, will start alongside him, having qualified at 28.336 seconds, or 190.570 miles per hour.

Albertson was delighted over the pole, calling it the culmination of an offseason's work for the Primetime Motorcar Company.

"It's a great car," Albertson said in the media center after qualifying. "Primetime Motorcar has worked all offseason on perfecting the new car, and we hope we can put it in victory lane on Sunday."

The Prime Quest X is marking its debut in HASCAR competition, replacing the more conventional-looking Prime Quest, which saw little success last year. The car has attracted controversy for its sleek, ultra-aerodynamic lines, and for its limited production. Primetime Motorcar has not been shy about the fact that the Quest X is a homologation model only, and only intends to sell 1,500 examples.

"We're trying to beat all the other manufacturers," said manufacturer representative Bob Hernandez. "And looking through the HASCAR rulebook, there is nothing that says we can't sell more than the minimum. All it says is that we have to make 1,500 versions of our car, and that's what we've done."

Hernandez also defended Primetime's actions by saying that Preston Autos and Stevens Automotive Manufacturing has built similar special cars designed specifically to meet homologation in both HASCAR and the NSSCRA. The Super Skychief, released several years ago, has a limited production run of 5,000 models, while the Sentry Mk.II, the new car from Stevens Automotive, has a production run of 4,000 models.

Albertson's teammates, Gary Savidge and Owen Archer, qualified 12th and 36th respectively. Archer blamed a bad crosswind for his poor qualifying performance, which saw him around 20 miles per hour off the pace.

One car will go home, the 42 car of Jonah Spencer.

EUSTIS WINS WESTWOOD 500 – HOYT FUMING OVER LAPPED TRAFFIC

WEST HAMPTON – Virgo Eustis, driving one of two Major Excelsiors for the Thomas Motorsports team, won the Westwood 500 at the West Hampton Motor Speedway today, beating Tyson Hoyt’s Stevens Sentry Mk.II by a little over nine seconds, but if you believe Hoyt, lapped traffic played a crucial factor in the race.
Bret Summerfield, driving another Major for the Brownlow team, finished third, the only three cars on the lead lap at the end of the race. Arnold Milburn Jr, driving a Mk.I Stevens Sentry, finished fourth for the single-car Milburn Racing outfit, the first car one lap down after leading a handful of laps early on in the race.

In particular, Hoyt fumed over lapped cars driven by Forest Rider, Mason Bryson and Brooks Benson, three drivers who finished well off the pace. Arbuckle finished 17th, two laps down, Rider finished 30th, three laps down, while Bryson was the last car running at the end of the race, finishing 31st, five laps down.

“This is beyond ridiculous,” Hoyt fumed in the media center after the race. “During the driver’s meeting, the HASCAR guys are pretty explicit with us about lapped cars not getting in the way of the leaders. So what happens? Mark gets in my way, that Forest Rider weirdo gets in my way, and whoever the hell’s in the 21, he got in the way too. Next time something like that happens, I’m gonna start running people over.”

Eustis, in victory lane, acknowledged that there were issues with lapped traffic all race, and hoped the NSSCRA would work to address it before the next race of the series, next weekend at North Hampton.

“There were guys that were in the way all race that quite frankly, shouldn’t have,” Eustis said. “I think it surprised me how few cars were on the lead lap, because that’s not something you see very often in HASCAR any more. We have, typically, 30 guys that can win a race at any given time, so honestly, this is somewhat surprising.”

The worst of the incidents involving lapped cars happened on lap 252 when Derek Washington, driving for the Brownlow Racing Team, tried to move to the inside of Julie Forest for position. Unfortunately, that put him right in the path of Zack Cropper, by that time a lap down, and the two went into the outside wall in turn three. There were no injuries in the accident or in any of the other four crashes in the race – Colin Meredith’s meeting with the turn two wall on lap eight, Clayton Smith pounding the wall coming out of turn four on lap 19, Owen Archer losing it in turn four on lap 272 or Karl Flynn’s accident with 22 laps to go to bring out the final caution.

Also making appearances in the top 10 were two of the Prime Quest Xs driven by Gary Savidge and Rudy Albertson. The car has seen significant controversy since the start of the season, as well as the other, more aerodynamic models appearing in HASCAR racing these days. The difference, however, between the Quest X and the other newer models from Preston Autos and Stevens Automotive is that the Quest X has been explicitly restricted to a factory team from Primetime Motorcar.

Bob Hernandez, manufacturer representative for Primetime, defended it by saying the factory did not have the capability to handle 10, 20 or more cars at a time.

“And that’s the same reason Major Motors hasn’t come out with something new yet. There’s too many Excelsiors out there for them to get something new. I wouldn’t be surprised if they get one for one of their top teams before the year is out, though.”
