Well...not sure how to explain this one. What do you get when a defensive team take on the Jags? They dominate 6-3, including a first-half hattrick.

A lot to look at here, but we are done anyway. On to WC87 we go....GO JAGS!

OOC: Welp. That was a good game and it was an honor to play in this tournament against some great athletes.

IC: Adamo Brava did well as a last-minute stand-in for Coach Jozefo Koltakov. He could, however, have used more experienced backup. For this reason, the Muralosian Sporting Association will re-structure itself so that more personnel will be available to stand in for an indisposed head coach. A multiverse-class athletic body ought to have a multiverse-class organization behind it.

FINAL
Muralos 1 - 2 New Lusitania and the Algarves

We're Not Gonna Make It Alone
Squidroidia 1-0 Trolleborg
Hoshi '74

Nordstadion, Bellymn

The biggest game of the Round of 16 by the sheer size of the opponents when it came to last cycle, one having made the World Cup and the other punching above their weight in both the IAC and qualification for the World Cup, ended up going to the team in white and blue. For the second time in a row, the Inklings had reached the last 8 of the Independent Associations Championship, but it was by no stretch of the imagination a goal scoring madness. The Squidroidians ended up with the only goal of the game, a strike by Itoh Hoshi assisted by the winged wonder of Makino Hideo. That goal... Was enough. They were advancing and facing a threatening, defensive Megistos squad that were planning to make their own run to the Semis.

You might say that this was a huge victory for the team, and indeed it was. It was their first win against opposition from the previous cycle's World Cup (If you don't count that win against the Baker Park women's team in Twicetagria) and their biggest win KPB ranking-wise yet. Besides, Megistos aren't really the best team in the world either, so it's easily a path to the semis for the Inklings. But this was still a Quarter-Finals game after all, and even though Squidroidia had been unbeaten in the Quarter-Finals for their entire existence, one slip up can taint that record. Ryūzaki didn't want that.

But with the cold settling in the country, training was getting tough. Turns out these people can't really train effectively with the cold, don't they? But they had no choice but to press on. It was what defined the Squidroidian team in the first place - If you feel like giving up, just push on. That's why they were punching above their weight last cycle, and it shows with this result against a team like Trolleborg. Just getting over the line is better than slamming your head on the hurdle after all.

Back at the hotel, the team was using Mito's hotel room to plan out the Quarter-Finals. Megistos's home kit, which was white with an oddly familiar tree on it, was used, while Squidroidia had their away kit. That was when one of the senior members of the team raised their hand. It was Shiko.

"Doesn't that kit look awfully like the one Free Republics used in World Cup 85? When they won the tournament?"

"Hold on, hold on. What does the flag of Free Republics look like?" Mito said, confused about the whole situation. The badge on the kit did have the Megistian football association logo on it, but that familiar tree was used.

"Blue tree on half blue background, half white background with blue stars", Shiko said. "That tree looks like the one in their flag."

"I'll take this," Hideo said, going through the archives of World Cup 85, to be more precise the kit section. Scrolling past Jamestownnnnnn, Valanora, Nephara, Vdara, Drunk People At The Local Tavern and countless others, he found the Republics kits from when they won. They didn't match up, but it might as well be a FFR kit from long ago, way before the 85th installment of the World Cup. "Not what they actually wore, but it's pretty much a old Free Republics kit, or at least inspired by them."

"Huh... But still, how did they find Free Republics kits even though we can't get to Republica at all?" Manager Mito's eyebrow rose up.

"Not sure boss, but it's interesting. We might as well call Megistos Free Republics from now on." With Hideo letting his arms rest, the team got into talking about the game against Megistos, erm, Free Republics.

"So Free Republics eh? They don't look like the Republica side that won the IAC a while ago, and their World Cup winning squad was more offensive than defensive, but they did top their group. Free Republics did win against TJUN-ia by 9 goals, so they're by no means a slouching side. Watch out for Ben Robertson, though, he seems like the complete package for them. This Free Republics side is young and hungry, just like the Free Republics sides of old, so watch out. This matchup may not be easy after all."

With Mito doing all of that, there was a joke around the Squidroidian team when they were set to play Megistos. They weren't actually playing Megistos, they said, they were playing Free Republics. A joke the team wouldn't forget.

A Historic Goal send HUElavia to the Elite Eight of the IAC!

HUElavia 1-0 Space
(Conti-Esposito 60')

For the 4th consecutive edition of the IAC, HUElavia was participating in another Round-of-16 match. In what was a pipe dream of occurring over 12 years ago has now become a regular reoccurrence for Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos. The team was determined to make their 4th consecutive Quarter-Finals appearance, but had one opponent in front of them preventing that opportunity: Space. The IAC regular that had recently been getting eliminated in the Group Stages finally had the chance to appear in the knockouts once more. The team was coming off a 3-1 victory over Pripet Socialist Republic in the Round-of-24, with both of the teams meeting for the first time in a knockout stage of the IAC. Both teams wore their traditional Home Uniform for the match, with the Main Xi for both teams playing, along with Lobato and Milky Way starting in goal for both teams, along with Cristiano and the aforementioned Milky Way serving as the Captains for the respective teams. The stadium was sold-out as both supporters looked to cheer on their team in an important match. The ball rolled and the match was under way!

The first half saw both teams looking to approach each other with caution. HUElavia, with their natural deep presses, had a steady attack but would just miss out on the goals, an issue the team has had throughout the tournament. The famous trio of Cristiano, Hamada-Navarro, and Navarro all had their chances, but the shots would just narrowly miss or be saved by Milky Way. Even the midfield of Conti-Esposito, Duran and Rossi also struggled with shots and chances, as the defense closed in on them, especially Outpost Beta and Mars. Space also had their chances to score, with attacks from Pinwheel Galaxy, Saturnia, and Pluto narrowly missing out or being saved with ease from Lobato. Solid defending by Nazarenko and Mariño helped keep Space's attack in check. Late in the half, Fernandez-Roux got a foul by Ursa Minor that had him clutching his leg in what looked like a muscle spasm, where Mendieta was subbed on into the match. The first half ended shortly after, with the scoreline reading 0-0.

The second half was a continuation of the same, with both teams making attacks in caution, and looked to out-tactic the other. Despite this Milky Way and Lobato continued with their saves and had the crowd applauding each other's efforts. Eventually, the opening goal would fall in a spectacular manner. In the 60th minute, a pass by Mendieta reached Duran, who gave a shot and it deflected off Alpha Centauri into a corner. Conti-Esposito ran to the corner to take the shot, while everyone oriented themselves in the box. Seeing how they were getting into place, Conti-Esposito took the shot with her left foot, which curved over the box and hit the post, going into the goal to make it 1-0. The players and the crowd were shocked at what had just happened, but the HUElavian crowd erupted and celebrated in joy as Conti-Esposito was mobbed by her teammates for the Olympic goal she had just scored. The crowd jumped and screamed to make the stadium rumble, while chanting her name. Substitutions were made, with Villca and Gange-Leblanc entering for Cristiano (who now had Rossi as Captain) and Duran for the remainder of the match. Space kept attacking, looking for the equalizer, but the HUElavian defense stepped up and helped Lobato out with snuffing out shots and opportunities. Time ticked away, and in the final moment of the match, Space went for an attack, with Boötes passing to Saturnia, who gave a shot that Lobato could not reach, only to hit the post and go out wide for a goal kick. In the ensuing kick, the referee blew the whistle and the bench went onto the pitch to celebrate with the team and offer their commiserations to Space. The match ended with HUElavia winning 1-0, the 4th consecutive time that the team advances to the Quarter-Finals.

With the victory, HUElavia is once again part of the "Elite Eight" of the IAC, which includes the likes of Tequillo (won 3-2 over Vykta), Poafmersia (won 2-1 over Hebitaka), Megistos (won 6-3 over TJUN-ia), New Luisitania (won 2-1 over Muralos), The Fortem (won 2-1 in extra time over Almuzahara), Squidrodia (won 2-1 over Trolleborg), and Port Ember (won 4-3 in a Penalty Shootout over Icecliff after a 2-2 draw). The next opponents for Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos will be The Fortem, the surprise package of the tournament from Pot 5 that made it this far. The Main XI will start once again, but Mendieta is in for the injured Fernandez-Roux, who is still dealing with the spasm and won't be ready for the match. Lobato starts in goal and Cristiano is the Captain once again. The other Quarter-Final matches are as follows: Tequilo vs New Lusitania, Poafmersia vs Port Ember, and Megistos vs Squidroidia. The team is practicing hard and studying The Fortem for the historic match, while the fans continue to hope and pray for the team's success both in Havynwilde and back at home in HUElavia, with millions of HUElavians lighting candles in prayer for the National Football Team. Here's to a good match in the Quarter-Finals against The Fortem and advancing further in the competition.

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

HUElavia Outlasts and Advances to the Semi-Finals!

HUElavia 1-1 (4-3 PSO) The Fortem
(Cristiano 88' | REDACTED 83')
(Sakaguchi O, Sol O, Mendieta O, Duran X, Cristiano O | REDACTED O, REDACTED O, REDACTED O, REDACTED X, REDACTED X)

For the 4th consecutive edition of the IAC, HUElavia was participating in yet another Quarter-Final of the competition. In what was a shock 12 years ago in Rcecuen was now an expectation realized in Havynwilde 12 years later. The team came in coming off a great victory over Space, with Conti-Esposito's historic Olympic Goal being the one that decided the match. Now, the team looked to make their 4th consecutive Semi-Finals appearance, but one team was blocking their path to that "Final Four": The Fortem. The Pot 5 team that won Group A and had a strong run in this competition was making a name for themselves to be the Surprise Package of the tournament. HUElavia fielded their best players for the match, although Mendieta was fielded for the injured Fernandez-Roux, while Lobato started in goal once more and Cristiano was the captain for the team. The teams wore their Home Uniforms, and the crowd filled the stadium to a brim as both teams looked for their historic pass to the Semi-Finals of the IAC. The ball rolled and the match was underway.

Much like the last game of HUElavia, The Fortem played to a normal level of football, while HUElavia played their cautious attack, looking to make deep and precise passes to open the scoring. Although, much like the previous games for Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos, the shots would miss the goal, either being saved by REDACTED or narrowly going out wide. This had the front 3 Cristiano, Hamada and Navarro frustrated at their chances being missed out. REDACTED and REDACTED had their chances to score, but Lobato would always run out and catch the ball with ease. Despite chances made by both teams, the half ended 0-0, with players and fans alike frustrated at the lack of goals.

The second half came and it was more of the same. Both teams kept on missing chances and nothing seemed like the scoreline was going to change. Eventually the opening goal would come very late in the match. In the 83rd minute, REDACTED passed the ball to REDACTED, who went a little forward until sending the ball into the box and out came REDACTED sprinting past Mariño, heading the ball down to a jumping Lobato and into the goal to make it 0-1 in the match. REDACTED was mobbed by his teammates while the fans were celebrating, and the HUElavians were stunned. Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos went on the attack, pinning The Fortem to their own box. Eventually, the chance would come. In the 88th minute, HUElavia won a corner that was taken by Duran. She sent the ball into the box and up came running Cristiano to tower over REDACTED and head the ball past a reaching REDACTED into the goal to make it 1-1. The HUElavian crowd erupted in joy and celebration to make the stadium rumble, while Cristiano ran to the corner flag to do his power stance celebration and celebrate with his teammates the goal that kept them alive. The match ended 1-1, and went into Extra Time, with both teams trying hard, but there way no goal scored. The 30 minutes came and went, and the match ended 1-1 in extra time, going to a Penalty Shootout. Here is the dialogue for the historic call for the team by famed HUElavian announcer, Vicenzo Avellaneda:

VA: "The Coin has been flipped, and it looks like The Fortem will shoot first, but they'll face the goal in front of the HUElavian fans! Cristiano wants to face our Crowd!"
VA: "REDACTED is stepping up in front of Lobato, the HUElavians are booing and whistling. REDACTED's going to run now... Goal. And the supporters of Fortem cheer."
VA: "Sakaguchi is coming up to cheers of HUElavians. She's wanting to score against REDACTED who stretches their arms. She's taking it with her right... Goal! The crowd cheers while she does the cross and praises God! 1-1!"
VA: "REDACTED is coming up to the chorus of boos. Lobato looks determined here. REDACTED steps up... And Goal. They sent Lobato the wrong way with a cheeky chip."
VA: Sol is coming up now, he seems confident. REDACTED is looking to pounce on that ball. He's taking the shot... Goal! REDACTED got a finger to it, but it slid through! It's 2-2!"
VA: "REDACTED comes up now, the crowd wants to see Lobato make something happen. REDACTED takes the shot... And it's a goal. Blasted the goal way past Lobato's reach, almost breaking the net, it's 3-2."
VA: "Mendieta is stepping up, he's had a phenomenal game up to now. He stares at the ball. REDACTED wants to stop him. Mendieta runs up... Goal! He blasted it past REDACTED with ease. 3-3!"
VA: "REDACTED is coming up now. Lobato really wants to make a save here. REDACTED looks like they wants to humilliate Lobato. They run up... Lobato Saves It! The HUElavians are cheering with joy! Lobato wags his finger in denial while REDACTED looks gutted! It's still 3-3!"
VA: "Duran is stepping up. She looks exhausted, but she wants to make an effort for the team. REDACTED also wants to make something happen. Duran shoots... And REDACTED Blocks the Shot! The medium shot was too easy to read! It's still 3-3..."
VA: "REDACTED, is stepping up. They want to keep their nation going. Lobato looks determined to get a hand to the ball. REDACTED runs up... Saved! Lobato puts a hand to the ball and sends the ball out! REDACTED puts his shirt over their head! The next shot could end it!"
VA: "Cristiano is coming up now, having it come down to him. The HUElavians are chanting his name, and REDACTED looks anxious to make a save to stay alive. Cristiano sets the ball down and kisses it for good luck once again. He's taking a step back. He's running up... GOAL!!! HE'S DONE IT!! A GREAT SHOT SENDS HUELAVIA TO THE FINAL FOUR FOR THE 4TH CONSECUTIVE TIME IN THE IAC!!! WE WILL SEE YOU IN A FEW DAYS FOR THE MATCH!!! HUELAVIA AND THEIR IAC DREAMS LIVE FOR ANOTHER DAY!!!"

HUElavia will play against Megistos in the Semi-Finals, who comes off a 3-1 upset victory over Squidroidia. The winner will play in the Grand Final against the winner of Poafmersia vs New Lusitania, while the Loser will play against the Loser of the aforementioned Semi-Final in the 3rd Place match. The Main XI will play, but Mendieta will still start in defense for the match. Lobato will start in goal and Cristiano will be the captain for the match. The Home Alternative will be used for the match. The team is training hard and studying their Pot 3 opponents for the match. The fans continue to pray and support the team fervently, continuing their visits to churches in Havynwilde and back home in HUElavia. The weather still continue to snows in Havynwilde, but the team is adjusting to the weather, and the fans are making use of the sweaters and jackets they bought to keep warm during their stay. Besides some scuffles and words exchanged, there has been no fights breaking out between the HUElavians and the Nationalists in the country, although the Government continues to monitor the situation. The team and fans continue to take it a game at a time, and only are focusing on this particular semi-final against Megistos. Here's to a good match in the Semi-Finals.

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

Sweep Of The Squids

We're back! And the good news is that we got past the Squids, but the bad news is... there's really nothing bad! Well, of course, except that we haven't won the final yet, but you'll have to be patient for that.

---

The Megistians would swing their cleats first, creating many chances. They knew how the Inklings played with their scouts, so they were going to oppose it. They, of course, got their first goal in the 23rd minute. Avila would clear the ball from danger after Hoshi and Hideo tried to play a 1-2, but got cut out. The ball would fly toward Tadataka and Howard. The two would jump up to get the ball, but with a little bit of a tilt on Tadataka's back, he couldn't reach the ball because of the little height difference and Howard would get the ball.

Howard would dribble onto the wing and pass it to Lukovic, who was barely inside the white line, when Shigeko pressed on him. Shigeko would then press on Lukovic, but Lukovic would have the flair to skill Shigeko and swipe past him. Lukovic would then square the ball to Robertson, who was behind the line of defenders, and Robertson would send the ball flying to the net, with Shingen barely even reacting, and it would hit the net and send Megistos 1-up.

Megistos would score again in the 57th minute, with Lukovic leading an attack on the right. Caliber would slide in the middle, forcing Shihei to cover him, which led to the space on the right being open. Jorgenson would use this space and sprint toward it, and Lukovic would think quickly and whip the ball toward Jorgenson.

Jorgenson would run with the ball toward the goal, and he would cut in when Toki would charge at him. Jorgenson, seeing that Shingen was off his line, would chip the ball over the slowly-reacting goalkeeper and the ball would land softly in the net. Shingen, of course, would dive for it, but he was diving backward instead of upward, so his attempt would be useless and it was easy to predict what would happen.

Squidroidia would score, however, and get back into the game in the 62nd minute. Toshikuni would play a through ball toward left wing Kiichi. Kiichi would dribble past Meadows and would 360 Avila, and would shoot for the far corner. The ball would go low, toward Becks' stretched legs, and would bounce on it, and go in the net.

Megistos wouldn't allow the game to go to extra-time, and would go ultra-attacking. They would finally get the goal they would want to in the 81st minute.

Quintero, who was subbed in the 78th minute, fell down just out of the opposition's box, and in the D. Quintero would take it, and determined to score, he saw Shingen bend one leg toward the point Quintero's target, and using the time given by Shingen, Quintero would shoot earlier than expected, catching Shingen off-guard, and he dived, but he was too late - he was diving for a ball that was already past him, in the net.

The game would end 10 minutes later, with no more goals. MEGISTOS 3-1 SQUIDROIDIA

---

The Megistians were celebrating like crazy, for they were about to be in the third semi-finals of their career. The first was semifinals at the SWC 11, the second was more recent at the IFC 2, and the third was now, in the IAC. The first and second they had lost in the semifinals and had to compete for bronze, but as they say, third time lucky. See y'all against HUElavia, who'll be a tough opponent. Of course

third time lucky

I am really sorry for the surprisingly lack of RP in this competition thus far, I didn't intend to rank-coast so badly but things cropped up real hard IRL last week, combined with a mix of OOC factors with regards to this competition which you may have noticed, such as the really confusing knockout stage schedule and bracket system that I didn't exactly know until like...just. Will trying to make up for everything with this, going deep with the details now.

Was it a mix of surprise and confusion that has been the general mood thus far?
In the Poafmersian camp, it certainly was. The lack of general information on who our next opponents might be, will be, as well as a general surprise with regards to how the tournament has turned out for our Red Panjias thus far. Not being able to prepare ourselves to play a specific opponent has been particularly irritating, especially with the way the tournament was conducted thus far. It was only after multiple associations protested to the local host then there was a late effort to publish the Quarterfinal fixture just less than 24 hours before the corresponding fixture, but by then it was too little, too late. Thankfully, all of these didn't really hinder Poafmersia too much, as they stomped their way into the semi-finals, aiming to be the first nation to defend the IAC title.
But first, we go back to do a rather-late review of the fixtures that Poafmersia has gone through, looking at the ups and downs of this rather solid campaign thus far. We start from the Group Stage. Breaking from the trend of playing everything at one go, Poafmersia got the bye matchday on the first matchday of the group stage. On Matchday 2, Poafmersia played against second seeds Terre Septentrionale, a really strong side. They have been our friendly opponents thrice now, with Poafmersia only having 1 out of 3 wins. The other 2 games ended in victory for the Terre Septentrionale team, though the latest encounter away before the previous World Cup qualifiers ended in a victory for us. Anyways, the match was a tough battle, as the Poafmersian team battle a young and energetic team in Terre Septentrionale. It was Dargis Walshor that provided a really powerful assist on the left side, finding Hansel Tang and Tang just dribbled past two defenders on her way to opening the scoring in the 25th minute. However, Terre Septentrionale didn't take long as star striker Zvonimir Kordic found an equaliser 3 minutes from break to keep the scores level going into the break. After a return from the break, it was a rather chaotic corner that got Poafmersia their second goal, as Pietrzkiewicz got an accidental own goal after the ball deflected off his thigh from an attempt by Joel Haodao. With that own goal in, both sides got in two substitutes, but it was Joel Haodao who got himself on the scoresheet to end the game with a 3-1 victory in the 79th minute.
The second game was against Dryicor. An opponent without roster, there was no idea how the game would turn out before it started, but it was clean defence that stopped Poafmersia from scoring again and again against a side that really lacked bite. Nevertheless, REDACTED managed to score a consolation in the 83th minute, a goal which made Poafmersia panic as they are afraid of getting yet another goal in for some reason and throw away 2 points. This was followed by a battle against Pripet Socialist Republic, a side which Poafmersia had some idea about. Poafmersia managed to steal in 2 early goals that turned out to seal the game, with 2 more unique players getting on the scoresheet for Poafmersia. This was also the first time in the tournament a 4-3-3 formation was used with the full experienced backline, together with Dikash Johikas. The defence was absolutely on point, neutralizing the little threats with the opponents presented. Johikas was especially on point with 2 brilliant saves of the screamers launched by substitute Rostislavovich.
With 9 points and qualification literally secured, there was another big swop in lineup once again. Against Rwekazaland, a really different strategy and play style was employed, and Poafmersia was lucky to have gotten away with it scot free. First it was a goal from Makana Tuft to make it the 6th unique Poafmer to have scored for Poafmersia. A brilliant solo effort that stung the hands of the opposition keeper. Then, it was a goal from a corner which found the head of Alex Hoboson, and he scored it for a 2-0 lead. However, two goals on either sides of the break made Rwekazaland go level 2-2 again, and it took a brilliant 1-2 from Haodao and Carisa to allow Poafmersia to regain the lead. Woden Sweet's long range clearance turned into an assist when Tuft helped the ball through to make Poafmersia 4-2 up with 14 minutes to spare, and there was only a goal as response to allow Poafmersia to maintain their 100% win rate.
For the players, it was an honour to play so well, treating the travelling fans to a feast. Understanding that Havynwilde was not in the best of conditions, with their local problems and all, but ultimately, the Red Panjias treated this as their stomping ground. Danzik Hoboson was determined to be the first team to defend the title, and they aimed to go all out while giving the younger players enough opportunity to shine.
In the next article, we will talk about the knockout stages and how it went for our defending champions.

THE EIGHT AWAIT
IAC11 Round of Sixteen (Eighth-Finals)
Muralos 1-2 New Lusitania

New Lusitania arrived in the Knockout stage proper with Muralos in their tracks. Their team had managed to be the fourth seed topping New Lusitania's Group C with three victories and a draw - meanwhile the Selecção were fourteenth seeded following their second place in the group with two wins, a draw and a loss, with the defeat coming from the match against Muralos with that unexpected goal in the closing stages of a classic group match. Now the team could exact some revenge in a way, should they progress, which was a lot more important than recent tournament history. Every knockout game is a game and New Lusitania was rearing to go tonight. Muralos had the additional trouble of their coach Koltakov being out, meaning player Adamo Brava stood in and had to make do.
New Lusitania would put in something similar to their usual lineup, Lopes was in goal being the main surprise as Vinagrete, Leiteiro and Cancela in defence; Palhagueira kept up his spot ahead of Azinheira after good form, Horta, Fernando and Gama kept up their midfield line with Silveira and Paciência up front, surprisingly.
The match had a similar composition to the first matchup with the teams being on almost equal footing. The first goal did come from New Lusitania once more, this time it would be off the foot of Silveira, with its interior into the back of the net - the assist being given to Bernardo Veiga, his second of the competition for an all-Sevilha goal. Before halftime, things were all level once more however as Muralos' Rui would strike the ball in with precision after a great run through the final third, though Lopes still laid a fingertip to it. Fifteen minutes rest before they'd return, it would be square at 1-1. For the closing forty-five, it would possibly be part of the most tense half played for the Selecção so far. We had great shots from Silveira, Palhagueira and Fernando but none seemed to go in. In the Lusitanian net, Lopes was troubled by Petrov, Zhou, Abramovich and player-coach Brava. However, at the fall of the clock hands, we Paciência got his goal courtesy of a cross from Horta on the flank, low through the green grass until it found the foot of the forward who controlled and sent it on its way to the goal, it was 2-1 with about five minutes to go. Some lightning fast attacks from Rui and Brava attempted to keep the team in competition but sadly for the nation of Muralos, there wasn't enough time to make an impact and fortunately for New Lusitania, as the Selecção were through!
This time, due to the seed system in place, New Lusitania would know their opponent as soon as all games finished. Around the grounds, Tequilo would beat Vykkta 3-2, with champions Poafmersia managing to get Hebitaka with a 2-1 victory; Megistos had a great showing against a fierce TJUN-ia in an entertaining 6-3 victory. HUElavia managed to go beyond Space by a single goal in the match (1-0), with the scoreline being the same for Squidroidia against Trolleborg. The Fortem and Port Ember would need a bit more to go through. The former had finished regular time 1-1, but after another half-hour had overcome Almuzahara, but the latter was still 2-2 by the end of that time and navigated their way through 4-3 on penalties against the cold play of Icecliff. So for the quarter-finals, holders Poafmersia played the sturdy defence of Port Ember, the Squids faced Megistos and HUElavia would have The Fortem, the fairytale debut story, in their tracks. For the Selecção though, it would have to be top seeds Tequilo, one of two teams with a flawless record so far and a goal differential of +8 in the first phase - sure the victory to Vykkta was a bit harder, but nothing they couldn't handle all in all. New Lusitania would definitely have work to do...

A STROKE OF LUCK
IAC11 Quarter-Finals
Tequilo 2-3 New Lusitania

...Tequilo! This would be the opponents of the Selecção das Quinas next. Tequilo had had problems with an illness which had blocked barred half of their team from playing for the majority of the tournament but with assurances to the FLF, the IAC’s Commission and the Organisers, the games had been going ahead and this one would too. Their fairly limited squad just about covered the starting eleven, but their bench was more doubtful. Bienzalma in goal, Quetzalma, Chicote, Okila, Pozo and Bertendona would be in a back-five, solving the issue of a lack of defensive-midfielder in the former and the latter, a left-back finding himself on the right-hand side of the pitch. Captain Tavia, Pinto and Sukè in midfield as Tlacolotl and Calvoecheaga occupied their usual forward positions. This meant that due to the Kepolalia malady, only keeper Demato and midfielder Cio Çenturion were left on the bench. New Lusitania had made two change, Patríce back in goal with Azinheira back. Despite a reduced team Tequilo were still in a fighting spirit, more than ever and what a match fans watched!
The Pitxileros, as they’re known, opened things up rather soon – on the thirteenth minute, the first goal, a great strike from Pinto after a team-play was ceded from striker Calvoecheaga, noticing his teammate open. A nice connection with the ball sprung the fans on their feet for the opener. Despite plenty of tries, it would take almost the entire half to equalise and it would take a free-kick to do so. Bertendona cut the legs of Veiga to prevent further advancement and the referee was quick to give the order to cede of the ball. Fernando went up to take it as captain but hit the bar – by a stroke of luck, a close by Paciência would head it in to put it all square before halftime.
When both teams returned, Paulo Gonçalves got some more play time as he came on for Horta. The second goal for New Lusitania wouldn’t come too late either – on the fifty-second minute of play, great inter-play in midfield left Veiga to pass a through-ball onto the captain Fernando, who curved into the top right corner well – he was always close to scoring in this tournament, yet hadn’t quite gotten there, but Fernando had scored at last! The party would be short-lived though and the game would be back to its original equal state soon enough with tactical substitute Çenturion scoring from far-outside the box for 2-2. It was all possible now. We’d see Tlacolotl get close when he hit the post after being marked offside and Silveira attempting to get it only for it to be saved. The goal would finally come on the eightieth minute from a counterattack as substitute Paulo Gonçalves got the ball rolling in Veiga’s direction, who would have to defeat the entire final-third before striking it hard and low to be credited and celebrate the winning goal, as the team wheeled away in celebration. The substitution of Azinheira for Nuno Mattoso indicated a dodgy tactic from the Lusitanians and one they’ve seen backfire plenty of times – the defensive, conservative style of play for the closing stages. Thankfully though, no nasty surprises in the home stretch would see the Selecção booking their tickets to the semi-finals once more.
In the other grounds, Megistos beat the Squids 3-1 as HUElavia ended The Fortem’s fairytale on penalties (4-3) after finishing ninety and one hundred and twenty minutes, 1-1. New Lusitania’s semi-final match-up would, of course, be none other than the holders Poafmersia, who after not seeing a goal for regulation and extra time, had to resort to a penalty-win against Port Ember, 4-2.They may or may not want revenge as back in IAC9, in HUElavia, it was New Lusitania vs. Poafmersia in the semi-finals - at the time, it was a 3-1 victory in São Rafael, but here in Havynwilde, it's likely that won't be the case with the current winners...
“It’s definitely a tough matchup for us, no doubt, we knew what we were getting into when we were unseeded, but it’s a semi-final, tensions will be high and we’re hoping to find that rare crack we haven’t seen from them during the tournament” clarified coach Francisco Grilo. So, some hope exists – though it is New Lusitania – but it’ll all be clear in a couple of days when four teams hit a fork and two advance to the final, with two fiercely competitive games. You won’t want to miss it.

Catching up with… João Palhagueira
A Breakthrough Figure for the Selecção

After his title winning season at Sporting Clube da Lusitânia, João Palhagueira, promising young holding midfielder was the first player from New Lusitania to be sold to a foreign club, in this case, the rising association of Tikariot, being contracted to Valnohar Rovers, a club who looks to reverse recent fortunes. Whilst the transfer was for a considerable sum and there was considerable interest in his debut following his performance in the New Lusitania x Tikariot friendly, it didn’t get off to the best of starts. Whilst he did complete plenty of good passes and was becoming a key figure on one side, he was also starting to build a sheet of bookings. “When I arrived at Valnohar, it was difficult, I won’t lie – to have such an expectation, at home and abroad, is quite something. Their football is different from ours, it’s a lot more physical, so I tried to develop that part of my play a bit as a midfielder.”

The Lusitanian was eventually sent off in one match and wasn’t a shining player, destroying the league as some expected. Nonetheless, it hadn’t been an awful debut. When the season was already well and truly under way, we would see some goals scored, being included in Team of the Week once or twice. “I think it took a while to find some sort of footing in the club, they’re all very supportive and when I actually got to score for the first time it was an amazing feeling, because it had taken a lot to get there. Getting this recognition after that period was really good”

The club itself, however, is still in midtable. At the time of writing this, the Tikariot Premier League has begun its second half of the season, Valnohar are fourteenth of twenty-four, six points from the drop and eight from international football. “The club itself…. It has been a tough season. We were hoping to be a bit higher at this point and some may have pointed out how close we are to relegation, but I’m not worried at the moment, I know where I am and with my teammates, I know they’re good players, so it’s still halfway, we have twenty-two games to go and it’s a championship where things can change very easily, so I think we can still dream.”

Of course, no one can talk about dreams without talking of New Lusitania and the Selecção back home. During the IAC, it was still a bit of a shock to see Palhagueira in the starting line-up for matchday one for some news outlets, but he has quickly established himself as one of the players to watch during the tournament for the team. “(Smiles) I mean, we have to dream, we always take it a day at a time – it’s true – but of course we want to take the trophy home if we get the chance. We’ve played some tough teams and if we can keep it going, we have that chance and it would be amazing for me and the team to celebrate back in New Lusitania with the fans, but erm… we’ll see what we can do haha.” As the tournament inches closer to its end so does the start of the 87th World Cup Qualifiers – the team, as is known, has never qualified for the finals, but has plenty of appearances in the Cup of Harmony, where its best showing was the Quarter Finals, before stumbling with Qusmo at the Elements Stadium, in the Equestrian States. “The Selecção has been close plenty of times before and it’s been a bit frustrating back home, but we’ve also gained a lot of experience and we’re hoping next year, it’ll be it – but for now we’re still in the IAC and that is centre-stage at the moment, of course.
A midfielder, a player, a Lusitanian and a possible future captain, star and leader of men, Palhagueira is definitely someone to keep tabs on in the next matches.

Hamada's Shot Sends HUElavia to the Final!

Megistos 0-1 HUElavia
(Hamada 49')
(Shamrock Park, Bellymn)

Prior to the tournament, the HUElavian Football Association (HFA) had announced their expectations for Coach Garcia Kimura and where she had to take the team at the very least: The Semi-Finals. Weeks later, and that is exactly where Coach Garcia Kimura has taken the team. For the 4th consecutive edition of the IAC, HUElavia was playing in the Semi-Finals. In each of the 3 previous appearances in this stage of the competition, Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos were participating in this stage, and were at the cusp of a record-tying 4th consecutive appearance in the IAC Final. The one opponent blocking them was: Megistos. The team from Group H won their group with 10 Points (3-1-0), and defeated TJUN-ia and Squidroidia en route to this appearance. The team was short of substitutes due to a breakout of Mieca0 in the squad, thus only 3 players were on the bench. Both teams fielded their best players, although HUElavia opted to play with Mendieta over Fernandez-Roux. With the uniforms, Megistos was using their Home Uniform and HUElavia wore their Away Alternatives. The match was played at Shamrock Park (17,000) in Bellymn, with a large amount of the supporters being HUElavians. The ball was kicked and the match was underway!

The first half was more of a defensive game, as Megistos played defensively, not wanting to concede early to the strength that is Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos attack. HUElavia did play with their cautious attacks, looking to pass and cross to open players all around, wanting to score goals. Although, both teams' defenses were playing well, taking the ball away with strong but fair tackles, where Becks and Lobato barely had to do much movement to save shots. Hamada and Robertson both were taking most of the shots for their teams in the first half, but with the defenses and goalies playing well, no goals were conceded, and the half came to an end at 0-0.

The second half came and HUElavia looked to press harder in order to try to get changes going. This would pay off, as in the 49th minute, Mariño took the ball from Jorgenson, sending the ball to Duran, who began to run by the byline. She passed it to Hamada, who was in between Fran and McCaffrey, but still being challenged by Avila. Hamada gave one low shot that rolled past the reach of Becks and into the corner of the goal to make it 0-1. Hamada ran to the corner flag, where the bench ran waiting for her, while her teammates ran towards her as well to celebrate in one big hug, finalizing with her husband Navarro hugging her tightly and kissing her as they took the lead. The HUEavian crowd was erupting, jumping once more, making the small stadium rumble, as they chanted her name. Megistos began to attack some more, now with Caliber in for Jorgenson, but the defense was not having none of it. Shots by Robertson began to reach Lobato, but he would make saves left and right, grabbing the balls with ease. Eventually, Coach Garcia Kimura made substitutions, with Reveles, Sakaguchi, and Duran in for Hamada, Conti-Esposito, and Amaru respectively. HUElavia also tried to score with the likes of Cristiano and Rossi, but no luck as Becks also did not want to concede any more goals. Time ticked away, and in the final minute, Megistos won a corner, where Becks came up. Lukovic took the corner, deep into the box, only for Nazarenko to tower over everyone as she headed the ball out, and once out, the whistle was blown to end the match, and the team went to the pitch to celebrate as they advanced to the Final, with the score 0-1.

Thus, HUElavia will be in the Independent Associations Championship Final for the 4th consecutive time, being the "Away Team" for the Final. The other finalist is none other than the reigning champion, Poafmersia, who came off a 3-1 victory over IAC 9's winner, New Lusitania. The Final will be played at Uvenstadion Superparc in Keflavɨk, where HUElavia looks to earn their 1st ever IAC Title and Poafmersia their 2nd Title. While some call this Final a "Revenge Game," the team views it as a chance for Redemption, for these past 12 years of failure in this very stage. The team is practicing and studying hard, trying to learn from their loss 4 years ago against them. The same XI from the Semi-Final will play, and the Home Uniform will be worn. Fans hope and pray in droves that this may be our moment to succeed and to bring a Football title back home.

Here's to us finally winning the Independent Associations Championship.

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

With 5 days between the last Matchday and the Round of 16, Poafmersia was relieved that they could sit down and have some time to discuss team strategies, and move forward. Of course, the sudden announcement in change of format was a rather surprising, but the team reacted really well.
Poafmersia only found out the morning before the match that they will be playing Hebitaka. A surprise package that performed quite well thus far, Adnan Suliaha knew the difficulties of playing such opponents without any baggage behind them. "They will be attacking really hard, ensuring that they can pull off another shock. For us, we have everything at stake - fame, honor, pride; while for them, nothing is at stake." Indeed, within the opening 15 minutes, Hebitaka got in a goal and could have gotten a second one just 7 minutes later if not for a VAR review that found the opposition to be barely offside. For the remaining of the first half, it was a bare-bone defence from Poafmersia that allowed the lead to be one-goal by half time. During the half-time break, it was Danzik Hoboson and Shakira Handris that was encouraging the team to press on and strategise on the comeback. Together with Hansel Tang's 55th minute substitution that injected new life into the team, the tempo suddenly sped up. Poafmersia, from tempo-takers, playing the slow game with them, became tempo-deciders. Two quick goals came in fast and hard, and that was it for that match.

Against Port Ember in the Quarters and New Lusitania in the Semis, it was a tactical battle which was not so successful the first time, but came out really well in the second. Familiar opponents that we have faced before in Independent Associations Cup 9, they remind Poafmersia of how far the team has come. Back then, we lost to eventual IAC9 champions New Lusitania in the Semis 1-3, and got held 3-3 after 120 minutes to lose 3-2 on penalties against Port Ember. Though Poafmersia won Port Ember once recently in the 77th Cup of Harmony, Port Ember was more determined this time and it was a tough battle. In the end, a stoppage time bringing on of an extra striker really helped in the penalty shoot out against Port Ember. Against the former champions, it was just a simple battle where Adnan outmanuvered the opponents real easily, with Joel Haodao pushing in a hat-trick to bash the opposition.

Now that we have reached the finals, we face our familiar foe, four-time finalists HUElavia. Once again, Poafmersia will be the underdog in this battle. There is no room for error against HUElavia. Poafmersia knows that this final dogfight cannot and will not be easy. But the players are very much determined to give this their final hurrah to ensure that the older players can get one final pre-retirement trophy and celebration. The battle is on.
