Electrum takes big risk at the Ubung Open

Instead of consolidating the rankings of top players Pelissa Giannapolous and Andrew Simmons, the Electrum Lawn Tennis Association has decided to instead send the third ranked to sixth ranked singles players to the Ubung Open. It's a huge risk given the fact that there are only eight spots in the NSTT Finals, and if there are unexpectedly good performance in the next two tournaments, it is very possible for Giannapolous and Simmons to be booted out of the top eight.

The reason why the ELTA made this choice was simple -- equity. Giannapolous and SImmons have had the lions share of Tier 1 entries, and are expected to continue gaining those spots in the near future. This means less spots for everyone else, meaning that eventually people would have to miss out. Take for example, Carmichael Brown, who after being forced to give up his spot to the surging Giannapolous at the Mercedinian Open, was force to play his first match on grass at the AOpen itself -- hardly ideal given that he had zero preparation leading up to the grass season's largest point giver.

Still, things are shaping up to be very different for the Electrumites.

Riley, Brown and Moore are joined by newbie Maddison Scott. Scott is playing her first ever tournament at the Tier 1 level, and there are high hopes that she can do well. She's secured a favourable match-up against Yaiza Rubi from Hispinas, and a victory there would mean she would face the out-of-form Sharktailian in Syamim Kevin. Kevin's had a mysterious absence from the tour ever since the end of the clay season, so Scott has the advantage of just having more hours on court up to this point. Also, Kevin's advantage of living in the same region as Pemecutan is neutralised, given the fact that the event is held entirely indoors in the spectacular city of Ubung.

And that's not mentioning the return of the Cenians. They really have thrown a cat amongst the pigeons, as they have sent all former grand slam champions to the tournament. This means that it is more likely for all players, not just the Electrumites, to face a higher quality player early on in the tournament. This has the potential to end those long runs by journeymen that we have been accustomed to seeing in the past few tournaments.

Tune in tomorrow to see whether Maddison Scott can win her first ever match at the Tier 1 level and advance to the Round of 64 -- if she loses, well, at least she will be sipping coconut water instead at Gangga Beach -- there are worse places to be after all.

TENNIS
One IU student goes, the other stays - Ubung Open Singles Qualifying
By Aristide Masterson

The Endgame has been reached. The Polaris and IU singles and doubles have been sharpening their skillset, especially those from Inkopolis University, for one last showdown until the end of season tournaments. The Ubung Open, where a historic regular season will end in spectacular fashion, kicked off proceedings with singles qualifying, and for one member of the delegation, it isn't pretty...

SINGLES

Qualification

Davi Malakkar (Acastanha) vs Diệp Van der Hout (Inkopolis University)
Segara-1 Court

Davi Malakkar (ACS) 6 4 6
Diệp van der Hout (SQR) 2 6 4

And we officially have our first casualty in the Ubung Open, but not for a lack of trying on Diệp's part. The Octoling Junior did end up winning a set, but was no match for Acastanha's Davi Malakkar with a chance to face the AOpen singles champion and presumed front runner for the NSTT Finals. The match was at first not close between these 2, but Diệp over here fought valiantly, and will be packing up for Electrum Slam preparations after a decent but unfruitful run.

Felice Mareaux (Neu Engollon) vs Niels Alberink (Inkopolis University)
Segara-1 Court

Felice Mareaux (NEG) 7 5 4
Niels Alberink (SQR) 5 7 6

Oh would you look at that, an Inkopolis University player actually won! For IU's players this is common, hell for Polaris's players it's expected, but a hard fought match has a hard fought reward - Neils, you're facing the best female player on the Tour! Jokes aside, while Dominika is the 2nd best tennis player in the wider multiverse, Neils did have a tough, long game, with both Sets 1 and 2 going 7-5. 1 7-5 for Felice, 1 7-5 for Alberink. The 3rd set? Well yeah it was still close, but Neils still won, giving him a shot to take down a giant. Which I don't think will happen yet, but we'll wait and see.

Toma Karga (Polaris High) vs Diana Jansen (Sharktail)
Segara-2 Court

Toma Karga (SQR) 7 4 6
Diana Jansen (SHT) 5 6 3

Now this was too close for comfort for Polaris senior Toma Karga to be honest with you. She is a Polaris student after all, she should be dominating these games right here, but it was a bit close between her and Diana for Sharktail, especially on Set 1 where the rule of 2 was enforced. Diana would use this momentum to her advantage and win Set 2, but you can't for the love of goodness count out the Polaris girl herself, drilling in a decent Set 3, a 6-3 set with some bite from Diana, not going to lie, to advance to the first round. 2 out of the 3 squids qualified, and Diệp will be sent home packing. See you at Electrum, girl.

First Round Previews

(2) Dominika Lisicki (Mattijana) vs Niels Alberink (Inkopolis University)
Baruna Court

Now this is a big matchup for all those Inkopolis University people out there, as Niels is the final member of the Inkopolis University team (Well, the final singles member) in the Ubung Open, and therefore the NSTT. And he will most likely end it off with a matchup against a very high seed indeed, the one and only Dominika. Upsets were done before, if you want examples talk to Houston Sawyer. But personally, I don't see Niels pulling off the upset of the tournament here. Inkopolis University? You're going home.

(6) Ardil Navsal (Ceni) vs Toma Karga (Polaris High)
Gangga-4 Court

Toma Karga is nowhere near as good as our trusty Houston Sawyer who skipped qualifying due to his absurd upsets, but for Toma it's a chance to upset a player and bring Houston some pressure come ITT time. Ardil Navsal, the Ceni 6 seed, is of course favorited to win this game and maybe go a bit far in the tournament, but this means more for Toma than anything else. Win the game and Inkopolis University will call you up for your collegiate career. Under that pressure, some people crack. Will Ms. Karga do just that?

Janet Riley (Electrum) vs (WC) Houston Sawyer (Polaris High)
Segara-4 Court

Now we are back to the Segaras for a matchup which has been already covered here - Riley v Sawyer. Upset girl versus upset boy. I'm pretty sure Janet Riley got the edge up on Sawyer by beating a literal 3 seed when Sawyer beat 4 seeded Dewa Putu in Mercidini, but to be honest I'm going with Houston here. He has the edge to beat the best players on any given day, and he could very well get a shot in the last 32 with any luck. And for him? Think of this as preparation for the ITT, as Team Electrum could be hitting the court in front of their home crowd against the Polaris studs.

As for doubles? The Peréz twins will win, just like in Damukini. I'm sorry, Abe and Cowden.

The Rivalry: A history of TJUN-ia Vs. Kohnhead (Part 3)

After Theresa Waterford's second encounter with a TJUN-ian player this time defeating Samurai Shinji Makauchi in Istria it was pretty clear Waterford had some advantage against TJUN-ia especially considering her upset of van de Kloor at Kinterten. However the rivalry really went to the next level in Reucen more specifically at Beçonailles for the second tournament of the Clay season.

Championnats Nationaux de Reçueçn de Tennis Singles Preliminary Round
Theresa Waterford (KHD) 3 1
Austin McDanielson (TJU) 6 6

Theresa Waterford's 2-0 record against TJUN-ian players got put to the test in this one taking on The Cowboy Austin McDanielson who had to qualify his way in. Theresa had upset van de Kloor and had beaten Samurai Shinji however it was McDanielson who was too much for her. Theresa had gone into this tournament ranked 24th in the World and this would be a major disappointment for her. However she would come back stronger than ever at Mattijana. For now TJUN-ians had recorded their first win against a Kohnheadian player and their first win against Theresa.

Mindy would have to try and avenge her sister with a match against Felipe de la Rosa on the very next day... Did she succeed, find out in the next chapter of the Kohnhead Vs. TJUN-ia rivalry

Single Preliminary Highlight

Ubung, Pemecutan - Indoor Hard court season is the second season that Acastanhada players entering following the NSTT 6th season Tour. As the competition progress, Acastanhada players never excel in any tournaments that they entering. Their best result is Third Round at Ethanian Open by Miguel Taberon/Pedro Arrachar. The singles never passed the Second Round on the competition that they are entering. The result seems to upset the officials. As a large country, Acastanha have been left behind in international stage then its neighbors. This situation happen as the country have to faced a huge crisis which might break up the whole nation. Fortunately, the situation can be handled. The restoration efforts are a priority back then which makes the country is rather isolated from international stage. As Acastanha decided to actively involve in international community, sports is one of their major line and tennis is one of them.

Although their involvement in NSTT 6th Season Tour can be said a little too late, but their eagerness to gain a better result must be appreciated. Now they are still struggling at the bottom of the rank with Lucas Parvash become Acastanhada highest ranked player in Single and Miguel Taberon/Pedro Arrachar in Double. With the season nearing to end, there is an intention to add more players in the future although they might still focus on the current squad.

At the first day of Ubung Open, only single players that play their match. 3 out of 4 Acastanhada players playing their match with Lucas Parvash got wild card to automatically advance to Round 64. A mixed results are gain by the three of them with Eva Sarvan is the only losing player. But all of them have to play a hard 3 set match which might make them too exhausted. These results also showed that the players performance are still unstable. The fact that all of them win their first set but then losing their grip in the second set is quite upsetting. Added to Sarvan which falling deeply in her third set although she have to struggle during the tie-break, she eventually lose. But having 3 players in the Main Round have been a great result for them. The real test however begin in the second match day or the Main Round match. Davi Malakkar and Iris Bergadhga both have to face seeded players. Bartolo Sabanero for Malakkar and Dewa Putu Adrian Putra to Bergadhga. While Lucas Parvash is facing Gergary player, Orsolya Szabo. Although Szabo is not a seeded player but Parvash have to stay focus on his match. The Gergarian player can't be underestimated as Parvash performance is also not steady. On the other hand, the Radkkar sister started their journey in Ubung Open by playing in Preliminary Round. They will be facing their far south neighbor pair, Bahari Zack/Diana Jansen from Sharktail. It is obviously an excited day for Acastanha.

Meet the Cenians: Part 1

Ardil Navsal
Ardil Navsal, age 31, is a veteran of the NSTT scene. He has won eight titles -- two of them Grand Slams -- and finished as the year-end world number one once. Funnily enough, he has only made it past the first round of the Electrum Slam once, losing in the quarterfinals all the way back at the start of the NSTT in 2014 to Elaine Foyner. Later that year, he beat Foyner 9-7 in the fifth set in the final of the Cenian Open to win his first Grand Slam championship. In 2015, he played an excellent season, winning 4 titles, including the prestigious New Oxford and Cenial Masters. In 2016, though, he failed to win a single title and only barely hung on to his spot in the top 10. In 2017, he reclaimed his mojo, winning the Cenian Open in a classic match against close friend and rival Botack Andiam as well as claiming the Astyrian Slam on clay. In 2018, he saw a repeat of his poor 2016 run, falling outside the top 10 to land at number 17.

Navsal prefers an aggressive baseline game with a laser-focused two-handed backhand and a somewhat unconventional forehand grip. He hits good approach shots but often fails to convert those opportunities at the net. Andiam, who prefers a more attacking game, once called Navsal's game "extremely boring." As his playing record intimates, he is highly inconsistent, but at a whole year level: He has good years some years, but bad years otherwise, and nobody (including Navsal himself) quite knows why he varies in this way. He prefers quick indoor courts.

RL equivalent: Daniil Medvedev

Botack Andiam

Botack Andiam, also 31, is another veteran of the NSTT scene. He lingered within the bottom half of the top 10 for several years, doing well but never winning a title, until he went on a tear in 2016, starting off with a run to the final of the prestigious Antillia Masters (on clay, his least favorite surface) before following that up with his first ever title on the clay in Nikolia, beating dirtballer Lonus Varalin while at it in a close three set match. To close out a strange clay court season, he won his second title and first Grand Slam in close succession at the Astyrian Open, again with a victory over Varalin. He then dueled with Varalin again in the final of the Cenian Open that year, losing in a five-set thriller, before closing out the year with victory on the grass in New Oxford and a second Grand Slam title on the grass at the AOpen. 2017 and 2018 were less successful, but he held on his spot in the top 10 with consistent results across the four Grand Slams.

Andiam is a serve-and-volley player at heart, and he refuses to play a conventional baseline game even if it means he is left vulnerable to a blistering return. Being 6 foot 6 (198 cm), he relies first on his heavy serve, but unlike many serve-and-volley players with huge serves, Andiam also has a solidly developed volley. Andiam is known to have a quick temper on the court, and although he has avoided defaulting a match, his outbursts have led to game penalties against him. His main rival is childhood friend Ardil Navsal (the two players trained together in their early days in Ceni), and although Andiam is blustery with his friend and rival with media outlets, the two get together very well at tournaments, often sharing rooms and drinks. He prefers grass courts.

RL equivalent: John McEnroe

Lonus Varalin

Lonus Varalin, 28, is often thought to be a newcomer to the tour (due to entering onto the scene when Navsal and Andiam were dominant), but he has proven to be a solid player in his own right. Despite not winning a single title in 2015, he burst onto the scene with a run to the final at the Hamilton International, notorious for its random results, and ended the season as world number 5. In 2016, he contended with Botack Andiam for the world number 1 spot, holding it for a good chunk of the year with victories at the Hamilton International, Cenial Masters, and the Cenian Open before giving up the chase with an iffy showing on the grass in Emberton. In 2017, he dropped out of the top 10, falling to number 15, but reclaimed his place in the top 10 in 2018, despite not winning a single title at all that year.

Varalin is known for his laser-like one-handed backhand, which he uses to good effect on the clay especially. He is reluctant to come forward and, despite his solid backhand, likes to run around to hit inside-out forehands, one of his favorite shots. Unsuprisingly, his favorite surface is clay, where he can use his stamina and previously mentioned backhand to good effect. He considers his main rivalry to be with Botack Andiam, as their two styles contrast against each other and make for scintillating tennis as Varalin tries lobs and passing shots against Andiam's serve and volley style.

RL equivalent: Dominic Thiem

Johmer Vales

Johmer Vales, 22, surged upon the scene as a 17-year-old in 2015 when he took the Electrum Slam against Cenian tour veteran Kika Dovan. In 2016, he continued his momentum from the previous year, winning three more titles, all on fast hard courts. In 2017, his ranking took a slight tumble (from number 2 to number 12) as he had an inconsistent year. In 2018, he went back up to number 9, and is looking forward to maintaining his current form heading into 2020. Vales' playing style is usually compared to Botack Andiam's, but he is more reserved both on the court and off it. The two are often considered "fire and ice" within the Cenian tennis community. In addition, while Andiam often uses sheer power on his serves, Vales likes to use cunning, with frequent kick serves, slice serves, and drop shots to keep his opponents off balance.

Another Heartbreaker for Cervantes Ahead of Main Rounds in Ubung Open
UBUNG, Pcu.—As in the preliminary round of the River Cities Open, Cervantes was forced into a drawn out third set decider. And, as in the River Cities Open, he would ultimately come up just short of advancing to the main draw. In yet another heartbreaker for the Aqualia, his status in the top tier of the nation's shortlist for the NSTT is quickly being called into question. Results from his match and an overview of tomorrow's below.

Daniel Cervantes (AQL) 3 6 6
Rof Leshner (HTK) 6 2 8

In the last regular season tournament of the year, both Cervantes and his opponent Rof Leshner appeared quite nervous, with shaky service games on both sides amounting in a first set stalemate at three games all. It was then that the player from Hebitaka started to look more confident on serve, with notably improved first serves in percentage and average serve speed on both first and second serves. Cervantes' service games experienced no such boost, and he quickly folded the set 6-3. In the second set, he managed to hold in the first game after three deuces, giving him the momentum he needed to comeback to break twice in the set for a 6-2 margin.

Ultimately, though, in the grueling eighty-minute final set, it was Leshner who was able to dig deepest in the final games of the match, breaking for the third and final time in game 14 to advance to the Round of 64, 6-3, 2-6, 8-6. This will obviously not be an easy match to recover from for the Aqualia (physically or emotionally), but hopefully it will inspire Cervantes to push himself even further ahead of the now rapidly-approaching International Tennis Trophy tournament.

To begin the matches tomorrow, the highest seed in the draw, Barotolo Sabanero, will face off against Davi Malakkar bright and early at 9 AM on Baruna Court. This will be Sabanero's first foray in the indoor hard court swing, and he is hoping to make an impact early ahead of the ITT and ultimately the NSTT Finals. Definitely a match many Aqualias will be watching here on our website.

The second match on Gangga-3 Court will similarly be Matéu Virxiliu's first showing on the indoor hard courts of Ubung; he will play the wildcard from Natanians and Nosts, Rog Ion Tralito. Virxiliu's fiery style will also be one to watch heading into the end of the season, with very high-energy matches to come.

Carla Tormo was lucky to have been able to compete in the River Cities Open in the singles draw as a critical warm-up tournament to the Ubung Open, and we will see if she benefitted from this much as she sees Mattijana's Sami Dominikanov at the opposite end of the court in the Round of 64.

The best-performing Aqualias in Shinzoba, reaching the semifinals, will also see their Ubung Open debut tomorrow in the preliminary round of doubles: the Pérez brothers will go up against Jewel Abe and Dan Cowden from Squidroidia in a rematch of the River Cities Round of 16, which went in the Pérez's favor 6-1, 6-3.

No doubt many Aqualias will be avidly watching to see the results of the nation's players in Pemecutan, and we here at the Toboso Chronicle will, as always, keep you up to date both live on our website and with a full recap in the day's print edition.

TENNIS
Deja vu - Only Polaris Doubles Remain
By Aristide Masterson

I've just been in this place before. Well, I've been in here a bit earlier, but Polaris had a bad day on the indoor courts of Ubung. And so did Alberink. In a roundabout way, as the singles, especially Sawyer, were pulling this effort together on the grass, the doubles, especially Cabrera and McPhee, have been doing the work at the indoor courts. Sure, there's 2 regular indoor court tournaments instead of the 4 or so with the other disciplines, but the contrast is immense. On the grass the doubles couldn't do diddly squat, on the indoor courts they have become the chessboard.

But it's come down to 1 pair of doubles, Polaris duo Cabrera and McPhee, winners of the River Cities Open, before the Polaris squad packs their bags to Sommer for the International Tennis Trophy. Based on what IU's Abe and Cowden have been doing, another hard loss against the Peréz brothers after being swept aside by the 2 semi-finalists in Shinzoba, it could be a rough ride on the Gangga-1 Court for the 2 girls, as they will be taking on Alexandra Barna and Ralph Henschel from the country of Gergary for a shot at the 1 seed matchup they have been craving.

But before they dive in, let's look at the first round, shall we? Hamilton International and AOpen champion Bartolo Sabanero from Aqual survived a scare against Acastanha competitor Davi Malakkar (Someone who the Inkopolis University people will know from that qualifying matchup Diệp had), coming back to win Sets 2 and 3. A big upset came in the Round of 64 as Gnejs player Fredrik Stagnelius, ranked 109th on the Tour, defeated Ceni's Johmer Vales in straight sets, winning 7-5 in Set 2 to pull out the upset. The only other seeded player out in the Round of 64? Kohnhead's Mindy Waterford, ranked 14th on the tour and seeded 11th, losing double 7s to Northwest Kalactin player Julia Devoningstan, that last name looking like the name of a fictional country.

Now comes the bad news - Everyone lost on the singles side of the competition. Niels Alberink is the last IU student to fall, being sent home after a straight set loss to Dominika Lisiki, the Electrum Slam champion, 4-6, 3-6. Wild card Houston Sawyer lost to Janet Riley of Electrum again in straight sets, and again 4-6, 3-6. Houston must have gone through some deja-vu himself. Compared to everyone else, Toma Karga actually did well, the Polaris senior getting herself knocked out in straight sets, but although Set 1 was another 6-4, the second set was much closer, with Ceni's Ardil Navsal winning 7-5 to seal the singles out of the competition.

And with the doubles of Abe and Cowden getting their deja-vu against the Peréz brothers, all that remains is Cabrera and McPhee, the 2 girls hoping to get to the Round of 16. Here. We. Go.

The Rivalry: A history of TJUN-ia Vs. Kohnhead (Part 4)

Theresa Waterford had taken on three TJUN-ian players in her first four tournaments and she had come out of it 2-1 including a memorable upset against highly ranked Jean van de Kloor. However it would be Austin McDanielson "The Cowboy" who would silence her in Reçueçn with a stunning two set victory where he dominated her. Despite this The Cowboy had to qualify in and memes immediately began to go across the internet comparing this to Waterford's upset of van de Kloor.

Mindy Waterford had not faced someone from TJUN-ia yet, that would change in the round of 64 in Reçueçn just the round after her twin sister went down against The Cowboy she and Felipe de la Rosa would battle.

Championnats Nationaux de Reçueçn de Tennis Singles Round of 64
Mindy Waterford (KHD) 6 1 8
Felipe de la Rosa (TJU) 3 6 6

Felipe de la Rosa put up a battle as all TJUN-ians do but alas he came close but ultimately it just barely wasn't enough losing to Mindy in three sets with an 8-6 fierce battle in the final one. El Matador put up a real good fight that's for sure, and suddenly it wasn't just one Waterford who had memorable battles with our rival. Many (including myself) declare this as the unofficial date in which this became a rivalry although it can be more considered a Waterford Vs. TJUN-ia rivalry.

Despite this being the real start of the rivalry we wouldn't face them again until Hamilton as despite multiple deep runs from us in Mattijana the drawing didn't work out. But you know what they say, the majors are what matters and that certainly is the case here.

Meet the Cenians: Part 2

Elia and Fia Xal
Xal and Xal, identical twins at the age of 30 (just old enough to be entering their prime in doubles years!) are definitely Ceni's best (and best-known) doubles pairing. In the last five years, they have finished at world number 1 twice and world number 2 twice. Despite this strong and consistent record along the years, they have won only two Grand Slam titles: the 2015 Cenian Open and the 2017 Cenian Open, falling in three other Grand Slam finals to their rivals, Sonya Gredello and Rosa Levinsky of Electrum. Beyond those two Grand Slams, they have won 12 other titles, including the prestigious clay court Antillia Masters and the hard court Cenial Masters. In fact, they have won at least one title on every surface (clay, grass, hard, and indoor hard). Their rivalry with Gredello and Levinsky has defined their careers: Although Xal and Xal have won more titles overall than the Electrumites, the Electrumites have won the overall Grand Slam (taking home the third traditional Grand Slam, the AOpen, this year), and lead in their record 6-5.

The Xals are mirror twins: Elia is a lefty and Fia is a righty, which is optimal for their court coverage at the net. Unlike many female tandems, the two often come up to the net on every point, with good hands, creative volley angles, and overall solid court coverage skills making up for their weak serves, especially when compared to male players. Combined with Gredello and Levinsky, the Xals' dominance of the international doubles scene shows that women can compete against men.

RL equivalent: Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan

Coosal Darlcheri and Gyrachor Rentos
Darlcheri and Rentos have definitely gone on a roller coaster throughout their careers. In 2014, after a season of respectable results, they finished at world number 6, and they improved on that result in 2015, reaching world number 5 with finals on hard courts in Britonisea and grass courts in New Oxford -- but a first title on the clay at Paradise City. In 2016, they had a banner year, winning the Astyrian Slam in Nikolia on clay and titles on the hard courts in both Bastion, Eura and the Cenial Masters, although they ended the year at world number 2. They plummeted to world number 15 in 2017 with a string of mediocre results in the Grand Slams, although they did win the grass court event in Whitehaven. In 2018, they rebounded to world number 8 with final runs in Albergaria, Britonisea, and Mattijana; they won their sixth title at the Royal Qasdonian Open on grass. Like the Xal sisters, they have also won at least one title on each surface (counting indoor hard and outdoor hard as the same, in this situation!).

Darlcheri and Rentos definitely complement each other: Darlcheri has a killer serve, while Rentos has an amazing reflex volley and knows exactly when to poach. Of course, this means that when Rentos serves, their service game is a bit weaker, but they try to compensate when the two come into the net. Of course, they are not averse to hitting passing shots in baseline versus net rallies, but they would prefer to come into the net whenever possible. That being said, Darlcheri is constantly working to improve his two-handed backhand pass. In a bit of an unusual circumstance for a doubles pairing, Darlcheri and Rentos married each other in 2015. After five years of marriage, though, they have started the divorce proceedings — which could have an adverse impact on the last few tournaments they play together.

Hana Kaori, recently graduated from high school, only 18 years old and already representing Natanians and Nosts at international tournaments.
Today she faced her first opponent,Vlad Popa, whom she defeated in a match of three sets. The young girl from N-City gave us an interview the day before her match.

Interviewer:Well, miss Hana, good evening, thank you very much for representing our country. How did you get into tennis?

Hana Kaori:Good evening!Well,I am the one to be thankfull for having the opportunity to Represent my country.I have gotten into tennis when I was around 8,I guess;I was watching the Olympics and the way the players were giving their best and how everyone was so excited at the stadium,I wante to try that,if that made people so happy and excited,I wanted to not only feel happiness, but also to make others feel happy.

I:So did you have a sad child hood,to want to be happy so much?

Hana Kaori:No,actually I had a pretty great childhood,I have tender memories of playing with my family and friends.Although i wasn't really into the more popular ball sports, but I always liked running,so tennis might look like a really weird idea for most people, but it does really require a lot of stamina, like running.

I:What are you expecting of this first match of yours?

Hana Kaori:I am expecting a hard match against a strong opponent.I will try to play very respectfully to not lose because of not taking the match seriously.

I:What are your plans for the future?Do you ever dream of palying at the Olympics?

Hana Kaori:I am hoping to start college soon, that will mean I may have less free time compared to now,but I really want to go.I also hpe to find someone and get married, build a family, these things...And yes I really do dream of playing the one day,I wonder if I will become good enough.

I:Okay, thank you for your time miss Hana.Do you have any message to our readers?

Hana Kaori:Oh,you're welcome,I am really glad you have considered interviewing me.I want to ask everyone to please watch our nation's tennis players and to give some attention to this beautiful sport. Thanks for reading this, when it gets published.

While the first two sets were hard-fought,Hana Kaori beat with quite ease Vlad Popa on the third set,due to a little bit of better physical preparation.

The Turnip: 7 Thoughts That Everyone Who Has Ever Fantasized Being A Tennis Ball Will Understand
by Billiam Maskey, chief-editor-in-chief

Everyone who has ever fantasized being a tennis ball will understand and cherish this article in the days, weeks and years to come!

1. Hearing the pop of a tennis ball can as you and your quadruplets are being caressed by a pair of smooth hands as you slide out of the can, longing for the moment that you have been waiting your entire life, ever since you were manufactured in a Cenian factory.

2. Yearning to be spanked, whacked, hit hard by a tennis racquet for the first time, and enjoying the sensation immensely that a wave of pleasure permeates throughout your tennis ball body -- this was what you were manufactured to do, and this is your purpose.

3. Being stored with other tennis balls, who are not necessarily your quadruplets, in various containers such as the sweaty confines of a tennis players' pockets -- you don't mind being in these sweaty locations after all, as your hair absorbs all the sweat.

4. The moment of anticipation when you are handled by another tennis player for the first time, that you will experience a similar, but different sensation that you have previously felt with another tennis player.

5. Having your hair growing ever spindly-er as you are whacked and toss throughout the caught.

6. Feeling used after being on court for nine games, and being stored in a container, never to be used again, tossed aside -- that's right you've served your purpose faithfully for the past nine games and now they repay you by stuffing you into a coffin container. Good bye.

7. Getting a new lease on life as you are released with your fellow brethren in a dog park, where slobber fills your hairs, but you enjoy the company of dogs -- a tennis ball's best friend.

THREE TO SEE: UBUNG OPEN, QUARTERFINALS
Bartholomew Pole (KHD) vs (8) Lonus Varalin (CEN)
Of the four former Grand Slam singles champions who traveled to the hot and humid country of Pemecutan to participate in the Ubung Open, only one remains in the competition: Eighth seed Lonus Varalin, who has apparently found the slower courts to his liking. Pole is unseeded, but has been dangerous throughout the tournament: He unseeded 16th seed Jean van der Kloor of Tjun-ia in the second round 9-7 in the third set and 1st seed Bartolo Sabanero after conceding the first set 6-1. Varalin, on the other hand, has been slow to get used to playing again: Although he swatted past Rog Ion Tralito in the first round, he had to work to get past 34th-ranked Orsolya Szabo and 32nd-ranked Carmichael Brown in the second and third rounds. Pole comes into this contest in pole position (pun intended): he killed off two higher-seeded opponents, while Varalin has had to work to dispatch even more lower-ranked opponents. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Varalin will get too much more playing time: Pole looks like he has too much momentum coming into this contest.

Winner: Pole

(1) Camille Fournier/Ines Fournier (RCN) vs (8) Elia Xal/Fia Xal (CEN)
This contest will be a battle of old versus new as the former world number ones, Elia and Fia Xal, take on current world number ones Camille and Ines Fournier of Recuecn. So far, fans have flocked to see the eighth-seeded Xal sisters play at this tournament. They have disappointed, although not in the traditional sense, as they knocked off local favorites Oka Sulastra and Luh Putu Yundari in the first round. In the second round, they dispatched fellow Cenian team Coosal Darlcheri and Gyrachor Rentos, as it was bad luck that both Cenian teams ended up in the same half of the draw. The Fournier sisters have had an equally easy route to the quarterfinals, dispatching both teams from Gergary in straight sets. Now, tournament organizers have recognized the popularity of this match, scheduling the two teams in the morning session on Baruna Court, the tournament's largest court. In our view, the current number ones have the advantage. Although the Xals probably have the fancier volleying skills, they are just too rusty to be able to play effectively against the Fournier sisters, and a victory for the eighth seeds looks unlikely.

Winner: Fournier/Fournier

(3) Dewa Putu Adrian Putra (PCU) vs Julia Devoningstan (NWK)
Cenians surely would have liked to see sixth seed and former world number one Ardil Navsal in this slot, but world number 96 Julia Devoningstan shocked the fans in attendance with a straight-set dismantling of the Cenian Open champion. Indeed, Navsal looked more like his compatriot Botack Andiam when he smashed his racquet several times due to multiple unforced errors. In all, the performance from Navsal was more proof that the Cenian competitors have been rusty after their enforced absence from tennis competition. It seems likely, then, that Devoningstan's win was pure luck, catching Navsal off guard in just the wrong places (or just the right places, from Devoningstan's point of view); she will have a much harder time pulling off the same feat against home favorite and third seed Dewa Putu Adrian Putra, a name that Cenian fans of old might recognize. Putra has won two Tier 1 tournaments this year before, so he has the big match experience. Combined with the backing of the home fans on the second-biggest Nusah Indah Court, this will likely carry him through against a fluke opponent.

Winner: Putra

Sabanero Upset in Singles Round of 16, Marches on in Doubles
UBUNG, Pcu.—Bartolo Sabanero was the first of the top four seeds to exit the singles draw in the Ubung Open today, falling in three sets to unseeded Bartholomew Pole. However, he redeemed himself later in the day by coming back from a set down in doubles alongside Qualo Tabos to advance to the quarterfinals. A recap of both matches below.

(1) Bartolo Sabanero (AQL) 6 5 2
Bartholomew Pole (KHD) 1 7 6

Sabanero showed no signs of his signature "slow start" in this match, as he stormed to a dominant 6-1 first set victory over Bartholomew Pole in less than a half-hour. It looked to be a done deal for the Kohnhead player when Sabanero secured an early break in the second and a 3-0 lead, but Pole managed to hold serve before breaking for the first time in the match. A handful of contentious service holds preceded another breakthrough from Pole on the Aqualia's serve to take the set 7-5. Sabanero betrayed his typically cool and collected demeanor with visible frustration, sending ball after ball into the net or well out of bounds in a very poor third set, which he would lose six games to two relatively quickly. Hopefully he will take some good notes from this match in the near future with the end-of-year tournaments looming.

(3) Bartolo Sabanero/Qualo Tabos (AQL) 5 6 6
Juan Subdula/Niken Subdula (NWK) 7 3 0

Unlike his singles match, Sabanero's doubles venture with Tabos fed right into the "slow start" category, with their opponents Juan and Niken Subdula taking an early double-break lead in the first set. Although the Aqualias recovered quickly, they were ultimately unable to reverse the set's fortune completely, dropping it 7-5 in a little over fifty minutes. However, they turned things around from the beginning of the second set, which they won comfortably without any strong fears of being broken, before dominating the third set with a complete shutout. They advance to the quarterfinals as the last players from Aqual remaining in the Ubung Open, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.

We will of course be covering their match from start to finish on our website and in the next print edition of the Toboso Chornicle as they take on the Grearish Union's Martha McNeil and Anthony Kawasaki on Segara-1 Court at 10 A.M. local time for a spot in the semifinals. We hope you join us.

AN INTERVIEW WITH LONUS VARALIN
Lonus Varalin, former world #1 and Grand Slam champion, talks with Break Point on the heels of his semifinal appearance in Ubung.

Q. How does it feel to be in the semifinals in the first tournament after your return to the tour?

I wish tennis publications would quit asking me this question. How does it feel? I like winning. I don't know any tennis player that doesn't like winning. If I don't win, I can't pay my coach, I can't pay for hotels or food. From that point of view, I like winning matches because I get to walk away with a bigger paycheck from the tournament.

But I understand the spirit of the question. There's a lot of expectations after being away from tour for so long, and I'm slowly but steadily returning to where I used to be. Being in the semifinals of a tournament is a validation of the work I've been putting in the past couple of months.

Q. Have you been watching your opponent's play during this tournament?

A little. To be frank, I'm not one of those players who pores over hours and hours of footage of their opponents beforehand. I know the points that I need to play in order to win, and I think that applies regardless of whether I'm playing a serve and volleyer like Bo [Botack Andiam} or another dirtballer like Mattias.

Knowing Mattias, though, this will be a slugfest. We'll both try to hit each other off the court. I've seen a couple of higlight reels of his matches, and I'm not sure how much I can gleam from them. He hasn't faced a single seeded opponent this tournament, so I'm not sure if I can predict how he'll play against me. I will go forth with the same game plan I've always done.

Q. Are you planning on playing in the International Tennis Trophy?

Yes.

Q. Could you elaborate on that?

You asked me a yes or no question, so don't be surprised when I give you a one-word answer. I know Ardal [Navsal] has been crunching the numbers, and he thinks we'll be seeded within the top four. So that means we'll be able to avoid some of the heavy hitters (Electrum, Pemecutan, Mattijana, to name a few off the top of my head) early on. Of course, that doesn't guarantee anything. Ubung is proof of that. We could still lose in the first round to nobodies we've never heard of.

Q. Are you saying the new nations on the tennis scene are "nobodies you've never heard of"?

You commentators don't know how to ask good questions, dear me! I know the Aqual team is very good, but they don't have as much depth in the singles section, for example. I think the team from Kohnhead might have a good shot. What I'm saying is that there's always the possibility of an upset, especially with people we haven't played before. Remember the time when there were tadpoles that upset us on a not-irregular occasion? I'm talking about upsets like that. Who's ever heard of a tadpole playing tennis?

I don't think there are any tadpoles signed up for the next ITT, but we're always prepared for upsets if they come.
