BEARS SLIP CLOSER TO ELIMINATION AT WCOH

CASSADAIGUA -- One of the two best opportunities for the Fluvannia national hockey team to get back in to World Cup of Hockey XLI came and went last night in Cassadaigua. The Bears, who have been nipping at the heels of Cassadaigua and Banija, lost ground on both with their loss to Cassadaigua coupled with Banija's win over Northwest Kalactin. A lopsided 6-2 contest saw David Chekovich and Matt Grabowski score for the Bears, but suffice it to say Cassadaigua starting goaltender Travis Anderson had a better night than his counterpart at the other end of the ice. Three goals against in the first period saw Teukka Salama pulled in favor of Dale Knight, who backstopped the Rochester Tigers to the COVID-delayed 2020 Union Cup final earlier in the fall. Knight ended up letting in three goals of his own, but they were better spaced-out. "We simply couldn't get anything going," said coach Wayne Cassidy after the loss.

With the loss, the Bears are now four points out of second place, which is currently occupied by their next opponent, Banija. An ideal scenario at this point would see the Bears and Cassadaigua both beat Banija, and the Bears managing to beat Megistos this time and have a repeat performance against Rwekazaland and Northwest Kalactin. Should Fluvannia lose tonight, they would need to win out, and even then would need some help from their groupmates to overtake Banija.

The schedule for Fluvannia's group play is as follows:

Wed, Nov 11: vs. Cassadaigua T 2 - 2
Thu, Nov 12: vs. Banija L 0 - 3

Running Up That Hill

PART 10 (2/3) (38 and 2/3) - Just Like A River Does

‘A good point,’ sighed Asher, nodding along because of how much sin he has gathered from smoking without her presence, but with her awareness. ‘One does think more about losing someone dear than a political change, especially when one behaves ala. Chamberlain-’
‘Right there. Even right now you are exactly falling into that habit. Love is good to the degree that you keep yourself sane, but beyond that, you need something else to further propel yourself into. That’s where you need to find what’s ideal for you. Tell me, have you thought of following your father’s path?’

‘Frankly, I did think about it,’ Asher responded, as he thought out the next sentence in mind. He knew what he was going to say the very next moment would be very important, and that there’s no other way to describe it under the dim lights. Should I chase for something bigger...or be content with what I have and who I love?Asher thought as he slowly rolled his left shoulder. It was such a simple one, one that most of us would answer with a flat yes or no, but Asher knew he needed few more seconds than whatever he was given.

Maybe I am feeling the same way my father did back then, Asher thought as he quietly picked up the towel on the rack and washed his hand. Gosh, Eileen must be waiting for me. By now, he was able to hear the sound of a ska band, one of maybe four or five in all of Sicoutimont, playing, and she must be waiting for him. Now, his few seconds were expiring far too quickly, and he could feel the sense of urgency as he looked over to Arsene Kim, who’s slowly combing his hair.

‘But right now may not be the time,’ replied Asher, deciding to pull the trigger of his internal glock that was checking the clock of decisions inside his head. ‘I did think about it, and yes, you’re right that I am not a journalist by trade. I always knew I wasn’t and will never really be one, especially after all the rumours that were frankly as close to truth as it can get- but I believe that I’m better off on the background for now.’

‘Good, because I didn’t expect you to say yes either,’ chuckled Arsene with a peculiar smile. ‘It’s true. Politics, without Etudes on the Etudes Politiques, or without Hak on the Jeongchihak, isn’t for everybody. We all know that. But that’s not naturally predetermined, by the set of luck and fortune, and has never worked like that. We all make decisions and stick by it. That’s why at some point, you have to decide your turf and run the long course with it.’
‘Yes. And what would that be, in your unrelated views per se?’

‘Straightforward, ecrivain. You’ve always been more of a writer than an academic, an orator than a politician. Everybody on the circuit knows that because of your father’s presence with the Opposition caucus. It’s like the style may be excellent and professional in every bit, but not in the manners desired by the clerks. I think you know that better yourself.’

Asher nodded, as the old man continued. ‘Please do not worry, however, as I think you’ll do well. But at some point you do need to shift towards somewhere bigger, greater and farther...as they often said to public knowledge, Coxwell Park is beautiful around June. Is that true?’
‘Always.’ Asher smiled, trying to hide his nerves.

‘There you go. I think your answer then.’ Arsene responded, before giving Asher a nice pat. Unlike just a moment ago, however, he was smiling this time. 'Good luck.'

That’s all he said, before the party leader left the washroom and into the crowds.

Another solid win,
By Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

After a 6-2 win against Fluvannia, the Fillies remained hot and continued to be able to put the puck in the back of the net with five more against Rwekazaland. This put them at 40 goals for the competition so far, and that is ten more than Siovanija and Teusland, who is second overall. The 40 goals is two more than what has been scored in the entirety of Group H up to this point. These numbers are interesting because while we did expect that this team could score goals, I don’t think anyone expected that we would be the dominant offensive team through seven games. This has not come at the expense of the goaltending and defensive play, as the pink and black have allowed just 14. That is a bit higher than the majority of the teams heading to the playoffs, but not at a level where we need to be concerned.

Overall, the goal scoring has been distributed in a traditional way, with the top line leading the way, but not at the expense of the others. Production has been consistent throughout the lineup, with goals being scored by each line. The defense has chipped in as well, and the power play has been effective. Cassidy Conti has had eight points in her last two games, with three goals and five assists; one better than linemate Abby Dayton who has three goals and four assists in the same span. Second line center Lauren Potvin has six points (three goals and three assists) in that three game stretch as well. This is a mostly experienced bunch in the World Cup of Hockey, with many players having been part of the championship team from the 39th edition. Dayton says that, and the 40th edition have helped, “We’re at a point on this team now where our chemistry has blossomed to a high level. It has helped us, and I think it has also been of benefit that we have been there before but yet we weren’t there last time. We are hungry to get back to the top of the mountain. In addition, we have new people on this team that did not experience that, and we want them to be able too.”

The 6-1-0 record that the Fillies have is shared with a few others as the best in the competition. Right now, no one is looking ahead. “We have some games to take care of first,” Dayton acknowledged, “you have to go into the playoffs playing well. If you don’t, then no one really cares how you were in the first seven games.”

Puck Watch: The Worst Draw Certainly Seals Our Fate

Postby TJUN-ia » Thu Nov 19, 2020 9:56 am

After dishing out revenge to Transvolcanic in New Washington, the Ice Jags arrived in Tjorl looking to keep up the good work against the only pointless team in the group. Ølson Rasmussen did ere caution before the game began, stating that no opponent should be overlooked no matter the difference in ability, but that didn't mean there wasn't a good atmosphere among the TJUN-ian faithful heading into the game.

Unfortunately, the hosts didn't get the memo and they proceeded to play it very tightly with the Jaguars as they looked for their first points of the campaign. The hosts took the lead in the 1st period to the roar of the crowd who bothered to turn up and it took until the 2nd for TJUN-ia to get one of their own, Julian Visipils scoring his 9th goal of the campaign as he looks to make it a remarkable double-digits during this campaign. At the beginning of the 3rd, TJUN-ia looked the stronger team and took the lead through Viktor Orban but hosts would fight back and would get an equaliser with 2 minutes to play. The rest of the game was tight but the final hooter sounded, the crowd erupted with cheers. Finally, Tjorl had a point in the World Cup of Hockey and it came via TJUN-ia.

We're pretty much dead at this point. 5 points back on leaders Recuecn and 3 back on Savojarna, it will require a miracle if TJUN-ia are to make it to the playoffs now. Hosting Reçueçn in The Rink could help us stay alive for now, but will this game be all for nought in the long run anyway? GO JAGS!

World Cup of Hockey Group Stage Day 7
@ MRC.CUBE - Zoloroni, Mercedini

Image
The MRC.CUBE (Cap. 21,000) in Zoloroni, home to Zoloroni City Icers is another prospective host venue for the Mercedinian National Team and other international matches and events. Other potential host cities include: Langtree, Acoflosa, Orga, Zholvi, Ogndenagorv, Ozzaya Agranka, and Shebchetsik, who are currently hosting Mercedini's home matches during this edition's group stage.

World Cup of Hockey: Mercedini To Host?
Good Evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to another hockey special of Mercedini Sports Daily, tonight reporting from Zoloroni. I'm standing in front of the MRC.CUBE in the nation's capital to talk about the rumours relating to a potential host bid by Mercedini the MNFF, for the 42nd edition of the tournament. Mercedini, now an established hockey playing nation, have the stadia and the resources to host such a tournament, and with their recent success they could be in line to host the sport's most prestigious tournament. Looking back at past hosts, it is clear the tournament is making it's way around the established players of world hockey, with the notable absence of Mercedini and more recent juggernauts like Siovanija and Teusland. Sooner or later, Dini will likely have to bite the bullet and bring the world of hockey closer to home, either with a solo bid or a combined bid with other nations in their sphere or influence.

The lack of a trophy at the senior level may disqualify a potential bid at this point in time. As Dini always seem to be a nation to host competitions after it has one a previous edition (see. Independents Cup, NSTT World Tour Finals and WorldVision). Mercedini are going well in the current edition of the World Cup of Hockey, so we could see a bid as soon as next edition if the Kingfishers are to make it all the way. However, recent hosting jobs have seen the nation explore sports and tournaments outside the realm of the usual football and tennis, and hockey seems to be the easiest place to start.

With Mercedini rising in the betting odds to host the next tournament, emphasis has turned to whether or not it will be a solo bid or a nation or two will tag along in the process. The blue and black nation seem more than capable of hosting it on their own, with: Zoloroni, Langtree, Acoflosa, Ogdenagorv and Shebchetsik all housing stadia capable of hosting international matches. Whether Dini could amass the votes all on it's own remains to be seen, and it's clear that adding a second or more nations to the gig will likely sweeten the deal when it comes to earning votes from nations unfamiliar with the nation of Mercedini, and it's previous hosting experience. The Region Of Novapax, or Bonesea-aligned Tequilo are all names associated with a prospective bid. However, the current emphasis of the MNFF is firmly planted on this editions camapign, and getting back to the knockout rounds which knocked the confidence and the reliability of the Mercedinian hockey-playing world.

Quickly jumping back to the action of the 41st edition in Taeshan, and it seems that Mercedini are all set for the knockout round, following wins against the current tournament hosts and previous champions Elejamie. Combine that with all of the previous results and the Kingfishers sit top of the tree with a comfortable six point margin between themselves and second place. Their recent 4-1 win in the Ice Palace against The Icey Elephants means Dini sit with an unbeaten 6-1-0 record at the current tournament (Home: 4-0-0, Away: 2-1-0). The path to the knockout rounds has gotten all the wider, with a single point in any of their final three games, or dropped points from The Frozen Forrest/Taeshan meaning their ticket to the Round of 16 in Taeshan will be stamped upon the conclusion of the group stage's ten games.

Looking around the groups, our statement regarding the number of surprises at this tournament continues to bear fruit, with most of the perennial heavy hitters making light work of their respective groups. Following the seventh match day, it's New Waldensia who sit as the biggest success story thus far, navigating a tricky group featuring defending champions S&T, Quebec and Terre Septentrionale. They look like a shoe-in for the knockouts too, holding a six point margin over third place with three games to go. If there was ever a team for the neutrals, it would be New Waldenia, watch that space!

That rounds up all of the main stories from the World Cup of Hockey so far. We are three match days away from the conclusion of the group stage, and following that, we will be sure of the sixteen teams who will be on their way to Taeshan for the knockout rounds. As previously stated, the Kingfishers need one more point to be sure of their spot, and it will likely come down to Frozen Forrest, Elejamie and hosts Taeshan for the final spot from Group A. We will keep a close eye on the runners and riders in this edition's World Cup of Hockey, for now, we bid you goodnight!

HUElavia Reclaim 2nd Place in another Sweep!

HUElavia 2–1 NPC West Florida
(HUETech Center, San Franco)

HUElavia came into Matchday 7 needing to keep the victories coming in, just so they could have a strong chance to advance to the Round-of-16. Fortunately for Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos, they were playing against NPC West Florida, a team facing elimination. In front of a rabid HUElavian crowd in the Northeast, the team was using their backups as the main line, along with Mancebo starting in goal. The puck was dropped and the match was under way!

The opening goal came halfway in the 1st Period, as it was surprisingly the West Floridians taking the lead. A 1-2 pass from REDACTED to REDACTED, allowed the winger to blast it off the stick of Companioni and past Mancebo to make it 0-1. It stunned the crowd, and the team was furious of falling behind once more in the Group Stage. What would then come would be a series of attacks from all angles, testing the reflexes and movements of REDACTED. Despite the attacks, the 1st Period ended 0-1. The 2nd Period saw more attacks come in, but HUElavia would break through late in the period. Petit gave a violent shot that was saved by REDACTED, only for Carmo to appear and tip the puck into the goal, making it 1-1. Carmo celebrated with his teammates while the crowd went crazy in the celebrations, making the arena rumble from the jumping and cheering. The 2nd Period would end 1-1, with the momentum favoring Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos. In the 3rd Period, the momentum would finally favor the team. REDACTED had the puck in one of the corners, only to get bodied by Chevchenko, with Giroux getting the puck and running towards REDACTED. He took a shot, which was saved by REDACTED, only for Dominguez-Garcia to come up and blast it into the goal, making it 2-1. The crowd erupted once more while Dominguez was mobbed by his teammates for the goal, as the arena rumbled from the cheers and jumping, with Kernkraft 400 echoing in the arena. HUElavia would then play defensively for the rest of the match, holding out as they took a vital 2 Points in Group B.

With the victory, HUElavia move up to 2nd Place, with 10 Points to their name (5-0-2). Neu Engolion maintains 1st Place with 12 Points (5-2-0) after defeating Poafmersia, who now fall to 3rd Place with 8 Points (3-2-2), by the scoreline of 5-3. HUElavia will travel to Grainfjall, who are in 4th Place with 6 Points (2-2-3), and are facing possible elimination from the World Cup of Hockey. Vasilevskiy will start once again, as the team are looking to keep the momentum going and getting good results. The team is training hard for this crucial 3-game stretch remaining in Group B, where these match can determine the outcome of Group B and who will advance to the Round-of-16. The fans will be traveling to the cold country looking to support and cheer on the team in what is a must-win match. Here's to more good results.

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

What could the new government's tax changes mean for you?

Lydia McLaughlin, Business Today Magazine

Personal Income Tax

The personal income tax makes up the majority of tax revenue for the federal government, and will represent the largest change in the tax system.

Current System

Let's start with someone working a full-time minimum wage job, for a yearly wage of about AP 25,000. Under the current system, they would take the standard deduction of AP 3,000 for an eligible income of AP 22,000, of which the first AP 12,500 would be exempt. They would then be taxed at a rate of 10% for all of their non-exempt income, for a tax bill of AP 950 (10% of AP 9,500), or an effective tax rate of 3.8%. If they had a child, their tax bill would be reduced by AP 500 for the child tax credit, for a tax bill of AP 450 and an effective tax rate of 1.8%. This is a low tax bill, as you might expect for someone making the minimum wage.

But what about a family making AP 56,000, or about the national median wage? Under the current system, they would take the standard married deduction of AP 6,000 (unless they're giving more than that to charity each year) for an eligible income of AP 50,000, of which the first AP 12,500 would be exempt. They would then be taxed at a rate of 10% for their income between AP 12,500-25,000, a rate of 15% for income between AP 25,000-40,000, and a rate of 20% for their income between AP 40,000-50,000, for a tax bill of AP 5,500 (AP 1,250+AP 2,250+AP 2,000 for the three brackets), or an effective tax rate of 9.8%. If they had a child (or up to 3), they would receive AP 500 for each child under the child tax credit, for a minimum of AP 4,100, or an effective tax rate of 7.3%. This is also a fairly low rate for the national median wage.

But what about the richer individuals? Take a family making AP 200,000. This places them at almost the top of the income brackets. Under the current system, they would likely give more money to charity than the married deduction of AP 6,000. Let's say they give 10% of their income to charity, or AP 20,000 for an eligible income for AP 180,000. They would then be taxed at a rate of 10% for their income between AP 12,500-25,000, a rate of 15% for income between AP 25,000-40,000, a rate of 20% for their income between AP 40,000-50,000, 25% between AP 50,000-60,000, 30% for AP 60,000-80,000, 35% for AP 80,000-100,000, and 40% for their income between AP 100,000-200,000, for a tax bill of AP 53,000 (AP 1,250+AP 2,250+AP 2,000+AP 2,500+AP 6,000+AP 7,000+AP 32,000 for the seven brackets), or an effective tax rate of 26.5%. If they had children, they would receive AP 500 off per child, but in the grand scheme of things, this would be a fairly small reduction. This is a substantial increase both in absolute and relative terms from the median wage, but it does not keep pace with the increase in wage from the median wage. It's substantially higher than in other countries, but lower than many others.

Well, how about the uber-wealthy? Take, say, a professional athlete, unmarried, who makes AP 5,000,000? This person would be subject to the top tax rate. Under the current system, they would almost certainly give more to charity than the standard deduction of AP 3,000. Let's say they donated 10% of their income, or AP 500,000. In order to avoid the abuse of the charitable deduction, individuals who make as much money as this person, would only be able to deduct 30% of that amount, which results in an eligible income of AP 4,850,000. They would then be taxed at a rate of 10% for their income between AP 12,500-25,000, a rate of 15% for income between AP 25,000-40,000, a rate of 20% for their income between AP 40,000-50,000, 25% between AP 50,000-60,000, 30% for AP 60,000-80,000, 35% for AP 80,000-100,000, 40% between AP 100,000-200,000, and 45% between AP 200,000-4,850,000, for a tax bill of AP 2,153,500 (AP 1,250+AP 2,250+AP 2,000+AP 2,500+AP 6,000+AP 7,000+AP 40,000+AP 2,092,500 for the seven brackets), or an effective tax rate of 44.4%. This is a high effective tax rate, but it does leave them with more than AP 2.34 million, no small sum.

Proposed New System

The proposed new system substantially reduces the number of tax brackets, reduces the top rate, reforms the married and charitable deduction, and increases the child tax credit, which will reduce taxes for most people across the board.

Let's start with someone working a full-time minimum wage job, for a yearly wage of about AP 25,000. Under the new system, they would take the standard deduction of AP 3,000 for an eligible income of AP 22,000, of which the first AP 10,000 would be exempt. They would then be taxed at a rate of 10% for all of their non-exempt income, for a tax bill of AP 1200 (10% of AP 12,000), or an effective tax rate of 4.8%. If they had a child, their tax bill would be reduced by AP 1000 for the child tax credit, for a tax bill of AP 200 and an effective tax rate of 0.8%. This is an increase in taxes for low-wage workers (about AP 20/month), actually, but it remains low, as you might expect for someone making the minimum wage. If they have a child, they actually pay less than under the current system.

But what about a family making AP 56,000, or about the national median wage? Under the current system, they would take the new married deduction of AP 9,000 (unless they're giving more than that to charity each year) for an eligible income of AP 47,000, of which the first AP 10,000 would be exempt. They would then be taxed at a rate of 10% for the rest of their income, for a tax bill of AP 3,700 (10% of AP 37,000), or an effective tax rate of 6.6% and a savings of AP 1,800. If they had a child (or up to 3), they would receive AP 1,000 for each child under the child tax credit, for a minimum tax of AP 700, or an effective tax rate of 0.8%. For larger families making the median wage, this would almost eliminate taxation entirely, an incredibly friendly option.

But what about the richer individuals? Take a family making AP 200,000. This places them at almost the top of the income brackets. Under the new system, they would likely give more money to charity than the married deduction of AP 9,000. Let's say they give 10% of their income to charity, or AP 20,000 for an eligible income for AP 180,000. They would then be taxed at a rate of 10% for their income between AP 10,000-50,000, and a rate of 20% for the rest of their income, for a tax bill of AP 30,000 (AP 4,050+20% of AP 130,000), or an effective tax rate of 16.7%. This would represent a savings of AP 23,000 for them. If they had children, they would receive AP 1,000 off per child, but in the grand scheme of things, this would be a fairly small reduction. This is still a substantial increase from the median wage, but it's much less than they were paying earlier, and a fairly low tax burden for their income, which is in the top 10% of Nova Anglicans.

Well, how about the uber-wealthy? Take, say, a professional athlete, unmarried, who makes AP 5,000,000? This person would be subject to the top tax rate. Under the new system, they would almost certainly give more to charity than the standard deduction of AP 3,000. Let's say they donated 10% of their income, or AP 500,000. Because of the reform in the charitable deduction, they would be able to deduct 50% of that donation, which results in an eligible income of AP 4,750,000. They would then be taxed at a rate of 10% for their income between AP 10,000-50,000, a rate of 20% for income between AP 50,000-200,000, and a rate of 30% for the rest of their income, for a tax bill of AP 1,399,000 (AP 4,000+AP 30,000+30% of AP 4,550,000 for the three brackets), or an effective tax rate of 29.45%. Their savings would be AP 754,500. 30% of your income still represents a substantial tax bill, but much reduced from earlier.

The new tax system would result in small tax increases for some of the lowest-wage workers without children, but would be a significant reduction for higher-wage workers, especially those in the top 10% or middle class families with children.

Corporate Income Tax

The corporate income tax represents a smaller, but significant, slice of government tax revenue. All businesses will see a reduction in their tax bill, but larger corporations will see a larger reduction. Remember, corporate tax is levied on businesses' eligible income, not revenue, so businesses can deduct operating expenses, depreciation, and other costs before reporting their eligible income.

Current System

Let's imagine a small business that has eligible income of AP 250,000. The vast majority of Nova Anglican businesses fall below this threshold. This isn't a major corporation, or even a modestly successful local restaurant chain. This is a mom-and-pop enterprise that likely employs only a few people beyond the owner(s), but is successful. Under the current system, they pay 5% of their eligible income, which amount to a tax bill of AP 12,500. There is no exemption threshold, but being allowed to deduct some costs means they're not paying tax on their gross revenue.

What about a larger business, with eligible income of AP 1,000,000? This type of enterprise is either a successful sole proprietorship, such as a lawyer, or a small corporation that employs a decent number of people. This is within the top 10% of businesses in Nova Anglicana, but it doesn't approach the heights of some of the largest corporations in Nova Anglicana, let alone the world. They pay a tax rate of 5% on their first AP 500,000 of eligible income, then a 10% tax rate on income between AP 500,000 and AP 1,000,000. This yields a tax bill of AP 75,000 (25,000+50,000 in the two brackets), or an effective tax rate of 7.5%. This is a relatively modest payment for a successful business.

But what you really want to know, is how much are the megacorps going to be paying? Let's say we have a business with eligible income of AP 100,000,000. This places it in the top 1% of businesses worldwide, and one of the biggest in Nova Anglicana alone, but not as big as some of the largest multinationals. They pay a tax rate of 5% on their first AP 500,000 of eligible income, then a 10% tax rate on income between AP 500,000 and AP 1,000,000, and finally a 25% rate on everything above that. This yields a tax bill of AP 24,825,000 (AP 75,000+25% of AP 99,000,000), or a tax rate of 24.83%. While this isn't as low as certain other countries, it isn't a backbreaking rate either.

Proposed New System

The proposed new system simplifies the corporate tax structure greatly. It introduces an exemption threshold of AP 750,000 and has a single 15% rate for all income above that.

Take the small business that has eligible income of AP 250,000. Under the new system, they pay nothing, for a savings of AP 12,500. They have been exempted from taxation entirely. This means the vast majority of Nova Anglican businesses will pay nothing in tax to the central government. Of course, most provinces still have a corporate income tax, so they'll pay that.

Take the larger business, with eligible income of AP 1,000,000. Under the new system, the first AP 750,000 is exempt, and then they pay a 15% rate on the remaining AP 250,000. This yields a tax bill of AP 37,500, or an effective tax rate of 3.75%. This represents a savings of AP 37,500. The new tax regime reduces their already modest payment, which largely comes from the AP 750,000 exemption. They actually pay a higher tax rate on their AP 250,000 of eligible income.

But what about the business with eligible income of AP 100,000,000? Under the new system, they will have an exemption on their first AP 750,000, followed by a tax rate of 15% on all other eligible income. This yields a tax bill of AP 14,887,000 (15% of AP 99,250,000), or a tax rate of 14.89%. This represents a savings of AP 9,938,000, or a 40% reduction in tax. This represents a substantial savings for the company.

Although the relative tax rate will fall for all corporations, and fall the most for small businesses (most will pay nothing), the absolute tax bill will fall the most for those that pay the most.

Estate Tax

The new proposed system also has changes for the estate tax. If a family member of yours passes on, they will likely see no change or a slightly reduced tax rate on the value of their former assets. It's once we get into very large estates that the big changes occur.

Current System

Imagine a relatively modest estate (as far as estates go, though most are certainly worth less), worth AP 500,000 (a house, savings, investments, car or other personal possessions). Under the current system, that estate would be entirely tax-exempt. The current exemption threshold of AP 750,000 ensures that the vast majority of estates are not taxed upon death.

Now think of a larger estate. Let's triple the size of the estate to AP 1,500,000. There are likely multiple real estate properties involved, or a particularly good stock investment, or some valuable piece of artwork. Under the current system, the first AP 750,000 is exempt, and the next AP 750,000 is taxed at a rate of 10%, for a tax payment of AP 75,000, or an effective tax rate of 5%. Even under the current system, this relatively large estate is taxed at a fairly low rate.

But let's move to the highest level, the level that fewer than 1% of estates occupy, a value of AP 10,000,000. At this level, it's a certainty that the estate comprises multiple properties, excellent stock investments, partial or full ownership of a business, and other valuable property. Under the current system, the first AP 750,000 is exempt, and the next AP 750,000 is taxed at a rate of 10%, while all value of an estate above that is taxed at a 20% rate. This gives us a tax payment of AP 1,775,000 (75,000+20% of AP 8,500,000), or an effective tax rate of 17.75%.
This top-level estate still is able to pass down more than AP 8,200,000 to its beneficiaries, a generous sum indeed despite the taxation.

Proposed New System

Now let's have a look at the estate tax under the new system. The new system proposes to raise the exempt value from AP 750,000 to AP 1,000,000 and lower the tax rate above that to a single rate of 10%.

Imagine the relatively modest estate, worth AP 500,000 (remember, this likely comprises a house, savings, investments, car or other personal possessions). Under the new system, that estate would be entirely tax-exempt, which is no change from the current system. The new exemption threshold and lower tax rate have no effect for this estate, as they will have for the vast majority of estates.

Let's take the estate worth AP 1,500,000. Remember, there are likely multiple real estate properties involved, or a particularly good stock investment, or some valuable piece of artwork. Under the new system, the first AP 1,000,000 is exempt, and the rest is taxed at a rate of 10%, for a tax payment of AP 50,000, or an effective tax rate of 3%. This represents a savings of AP 25,000 from the old system for this relatively large estate. That comes from the additional AP 250,000 of value exempted, as the tax rate for this estate remains unchanged at 10%.

But what about the 1% of estates, an estate worth AP 10,000,000? Remember, at this level, it's a certainty that the estate comprises multiple properties, excellent stock investments, partial or full ownership of a business, and other valuable property. Under the new system, the first AP 1,000,000 is exempt, and the rest is taxed at a rate of 10%. This gives us a tax payment of AP 900,000 (10% of AP 9,000,000), or an effective tax rate of 9%. This represents a savings of AP 875,000 for this incredibly large estate, or almost half of their previous tax bill. AP 25,000 of that savings comes from the raised exemption, but the vast majority comes from a reduced tax rate on non-exempt income.

The estate tax changes will benefit some estates in the top 10-15% with the higher exemption threshold, but the value of the estate tax reduction is primarily for larger estates in the top 1-2%, who will see a substantial reduction in their tax bill.

Summed up

The biggest changes will be for the wealthiest taxpayers, the biggest corporations, and the largest estates, but don't ignore the substantial benefits for small businesses (who will be exempt from taxation, largely), and larger middle-class families. As for the projected growth rates, we can't say at the moment, but it does seem like this will benefit the economy. It's just a question of how much more money people and corporations will spend into the economy and how much less tax revenue will be collected.

.:: SKATE-GYATSO Rink #2, Juaan’Pirun District, Sundari, Southern Mandalorian Territories, Gyatso-kai ::.
0450 hours local time, 19 November 2020.3

The cold morning air had yet to break through the walls of the rink, but inside it was already cold. Hiteki Kia – the injured and prideful player whose speculated return dominated Gyatso-kai sports news – had already been skating for about forty minutes or so, and had sufficiently warmed up. He hadn’t travelled with the team to Kohnhead at the suggestion of Doctor Wong, and as such had spent the last two days skating and rehabbing and trying to figure out exactly where he was on his return to play schedule.

As of now… somewhere between ‘fully healed’ and ‘freshly injured’

Kia laughed at his own joke, turning wide on the ice. He was wearing his practice jersey from the Southern Polar Leopards; the light blue of the jersey almost seamlessly blending in with the ice. It had been a rough couple of years in the Southern Water Tribes; the Polar Leopards made it into the quarterfinals last season, however, they were swept by the Miners of Enceri 4-nil. Kia had scored two of Southern’s four goals that postseason, but damn if the defence just couldn’t do anything to slow down Enceri’s offence. Now, for 2020.3, the Polar Leopards had again made the post-season, but with the World Cup putting a pause on play, it would only be a matter of time until the team figured out who their opponent would be.

Kia took another turn, this time putting all of his weight on his left leg, feeling the muscle engage in his shin and tendons pull as he completed the turn. Coming out of it, Kia crossed over and with the weight lifted, he smiled at how there was no pain. He wanted to push himself but knew that would only delay his return even longer, so he followed through on the turn and made his way back to the net at the opposite end of the ice. Standing sentry in net, as if he were a goaltender waiting for the game to come back to his side of the ice, was Doctor Wong Fuchan. As Kia came up, Wong smiled.

”I see that turn there was more manageable, eh?” Wong laughed, tapping Kia’s left leg with a hockey stick. ”How you feeling now?”

“A little tighter than I would like to be,”
Kia sighed, feeling that familiar, albeit less noticeable, ache in his shin.

“Some tightness is to be expected. You just have to work it out and you’ll be back to form.” Wong pushed himself off the net, and Kia followed. As the two men skated, Wong looked to Kia. ”I take it you watched the game last night…”

“Yeah,”
Kia muttered, ”And I texted a few of the ade afterwards.”

“What did you think?”

“Of Jaster? He’s really coming into the game.”
Kia smiled. Jaster Kal’oki was showing his talent well. A goal against Tikariot, another goal against -Anthor- and he was cementing his place in the second line well. Something Kia worried about slightly, seeing as how the young defenceman from Adirolf had all-but-replaced Kia on the line. ”Though I’m sure I’ll get my spot back when I return.”

“Oh, absolutely.”
Wong reassured Kia. ”I’m sure he knows the position is temporary, and I already spoke with Ishii about that.”

“You spoke with him?”

“A doctor likes to know his patient’s future… If I knew you were being replaced, I would take my time on healing you and rehabbing you. I certainly wouldn’t have called in a favor to get some washed-out player some private ice time.”

Kia laughed at Wong, and thought to himself how fortunate for the doctor to have a friend who owned one of the largest rinks in Sundari outside of the one at The Forum. Not to mention, picking him up from the hotel and driving him there at three in the morning so the reporters wouldn’t follow.

”I appreciate the honest, Doc.” Kia turned sharply, and Wong followed. Sure, he was a nationally-renowned sports doctor, with decades of practice under his belt. However, a long time ago, he was also a member of the Vardha University’s championship hockey team. Back when he played, Wong was part of three collegiate championships, and even scored the winning goal in the 1993.1 tournament against Keldabe State. He was an impressive skater back then, and no doubt had he not pursued medicine, he would have a storied career on the ice. Yet, as he often was fond of saying, he “loved playing hockey”, but he “lived to help people.”

”So what do you think?” Wong sped up, pushing a bit beyond Kia. ”Jaster down to the third line, move Lesow to the reserves and rest him up for the post?”

“I don’t know,”
Kia shrugged before picking up some speed. “I think we should leave Lesow and Kuku on the third together, let Jaster rest up should I need to rest.”

“Oh, that’s a promising idea.”
Wong waited until Kia was just about to overtake him, and as soon as they were lined up, Wong turned into Kia and gave him a hard shoulder check. As he fell, Kia was laughing, only to settle on the ice as Wong circled back.

“As for me Doc?” Kia sat on the ice, watching the good doctor come up to him. As he stopped, Wong reached out a loan hand, his smile just a bit larger than before.

”I think we can talk about Valanora.”

More than pride on the line at the IceBank

An offensive explosion helped Græntfjall bypass regional rivals Bleronia in a high-scoring 1 – 0 affair that took the Ice Wolves’ tournament goal tally to a whopping three goals. Such spectacular offensive prowess comes as somewhat out of character. Anakol Maximiliansson, assisted by Iivo Torkildsson and Fabian Toresson, scored the key goal on a sharp one-timer that went high to Berti Stuka’s right. Bleronia forced 45 saves from goalkeeper Tom Finngeirsson but were unable to break the deadlock.

The Ice Wolves now face a do-or-die moment. The omens are inauspicious: the opponents? HUElavia, the only team to have beaten the Ice Wolves three times (in a row, no less), and coming less than 24 hours after the HUElavians knocked the Junior Snow Wolves out of the Under-18 Cup and a further 24 hours after the Nepharan Cormorants brutally dispatched the senior Snow Wolves from their own tournament. Should Græntfjall lose at the IceBank Arena, their tournament qualification hopes will be over. A win keeps the slim possibility of leapfrogging one of Neu Engollon or HUElavia alive.

Waldensian Times: Avalanche on cusp of World Hockey Cup Playoffs
by Henrik Larsson

(World Cup of Hockey, Taeshan) After a nearly unprecedented string of good fortune, the New Waldensia Avalanche team sits on the edge of qualifying for the World Cup of Hockey Playoffs. In only its second appearance at the WCOH, the national team is playing dramatically better than last time, where they finished with a lowly 1-1-8. Currently, the Avalanche sit at 5-1-1, good for second place in Group D.

The Avalanche's only loss has come at the hands of the top team in their Group, Siovanija and Teusland, while their draw was to the lowest team, United Hemand Insia.

"I'm very pleased with how our guys have been playing. To say they've improved is the understatement of the year. Worlds better than last year," said Coach Luther Sexton.

Injuries have begun to play a role in close games, as the Cup continues at a torrid pace. Assistant Coach Johnathon Tanner indicated that rotations to lower lines and reserve players will likely play a bigger role in the remaining games, in order to preserve stamina and health for the playoff, should the Avalanche indeed qualify.

The unexpectedly good showing by the Avalanche and others has sparked some outcry by some more established teams and followers of the sport, with some officials commentators and team officials accusing the host nation and officiating staff of improprieties. Taeshan officials have denied such retorts, while sports analysts point to the uncertain nature of sports as the cause of what seems to be an unusual World Cup this time.

"It's not unusual for teams to just have bad showings when you get on a stage like this," said Waldensia Sports Talk 96.3FM's 'The Ice House Show' host Henrik Vardner. "You can go into these things expecting a certain result, but you really can always expect the unexpected to break through from time to time."

Krauts to Completely Gut Office and Coaching Personnel, Blaming Their Incompetence for Underperforming Squad

Well, it's no secret that Ranoria has not performed as well as expected in hockey. While no one expects them to be consistently contending for titles like they do in the World Bowl and NSCF, we should certainly be doing better than the nation's baseball representatives on the international stage. Instead, Leonardo Harrison and Philip Lux have led that team to unprecedented highs, where Augustin Khan and Richart Matthens, two of the better players in Ranoria's NAHC, have failed to do the same.

It isn't particularly their fault, they've performed as above average players, if not dominantly, but the two haven't been dominant in over a year domestically, why should that change all the sudden on the international stage? Both players have lost a step, and are past the storied primes of their careers.

So, what's next for this team?

Well first off, we need to find a coach, as Erich Trotter has been fired from that position. His lack of creativity certainly didn't do us any favors. There are a few candidates on the board, but the frontrunner is certainly young up and comer Alram Isenbrand, an assistant for the Cold Hill Huntsman. Their head coach, Bruno Ortwin, has a career record of 256-224, in his twelve years in the position.

Image
Alram Isenbrand is the frontrunner to be the next head coach of the Ranorian Krauts Ice Hockey team

Since Isenbrand has been hired, Ortwin's Huntsman have gone 72-48, good for winning 60% of their games. That up from his 53% career average, and before the youngster started helping out, it was a bit more grim. Ortwin, through nine seasons without the Krauts potential new coach, was 184-176, just over a winning record.

So Ortwin is likely the first step for the Krauts, who are aggressively pursuing the young coach to be the next head man for the Ranorian National team. Next week, we'll address the players the team will be approaching in an attempt to improve the talent under Ortwin, and, hopefully, we'll have an update as to the status of his hiring.

I go by Ran. Unless, of course, you want to type out Ranoria. That's your decision.

BEARS' WINDOW CLOSING FAST AT WCOH

AISSA, BANIJA -- The Fluvannia national hockey team didn't gain any ground on second-place Banija following their second head-to-head matchup Wednesday night, but they didn't lose any, either. A 1-1 tie saw the Bears remain four points behind their "biggest rival" for a spot in the Round of 16. Banija is the only team that Fluvannia has faced in all three of its appearances in the World Cup, and it would certainly appear to be the case that the two have picked up on each other's styles of play and idiosyncrasies. Neither team was able to get much done in the first period, though not for lack of trying -- the Bears, a significantly more offense-minded squad, peppered Banija netminder Dewa Bangè with fourteen shots, though none of them made it past. The second period saw the Bears once again dictate a fair amount of the pace of play, but it was the hosts who broke through first at 9:27. Yakuba Tiyana and Wassa Bah were able to pick the puck off on an attempted pass by Harvey Todd along the half-boards to Alberto Barrett. Tiyana intercepted the pass and charged down the ice with Bah against Bert Cooper. The give-and-go play succeeded, and Tayana buried the puck behind Teukka Salama for a 1-0 lead. This lead held up at the second intermission, though Fluvannia had several good opportunities on the power play after Banija defender Alan Ceesay was whistled for a hook.

The third period was perhaps the most fierce one the Bears have played so far this tournament. Both teams knew what was at stake: a win by the hosts would clinch a spot in the Round of 16 for them. A win by the visitors however would narrow the gap to but a single game. Several penalties were called, all of them for roughing during what may be termed "extracurricular activity". None of them resulted in any goals, however. The clock continued to tick down, but at 17:43, it was Bears captain Patrick Cleary springing his longtime wing Mark Bradley for a breakaway, and Bradley did what he does best: put the puck in the net. With attendance almost even between supporters of each team, he was surely surprised at the raucous reception his tally received in what was supposed to be someone else's arena. With the score knotted once again, however, neither team was able to finish the other with a last-minute goal, and even after overtime, a 1-all box score remained.

Fluvannia now must effectively win out, or at least hope for a tie in one of their three remaining games. Should Banija win even one more game, the Bears will be eliminated yet again by a team from a nation that does not know winter.

The schedule for Fluvannia's group play is as follows:

Wed, Nov 11: vs. Cassadaigua T 2 - 2

WCOH XLII LOOKS TO HAVE COMPETITION

The announcement came today that the nation of Mercedini, a long-established member on the international hockey stage, is preparing a bid to host the next installment of the tournament. Fluvannia Hockey Federation Chairman Jokke Kiljunen, when asked for a reaction, had this to say: "It is no secret that we are attempting to bring the forty-second World Cup of Hockey to Fluvannia; hosting a very successful World Juniors was deemed a natural stepping stone to the top-flight senior competition. We welcome another bid from a competing nation, as this will encourage both bidders, along with any additional bids, to ensure they have their best foot forward when it comes to providing the sort of environment for both the competitors and spectators that allows international hockey to thrive." Mercedini's governing association for hockey has implied that they may be open to a multi-national bid; no word yet on whether the FHF have a preference.

Pain.

It is the only thing TJUN-ia knows in this sport, and that was proven tonight.

Recuecn won 3-1 at The Rink. Julian Visipils got his 10th goal, but it wasn't enough to change TJUN-ia's fate in this group. At 8 points, we can not catch up to these guys and Savojarna anymore.

What is it that is preventing us from succeeding at this level? Is it Ølson Rasmussen and his style of play, or is it just bad luck? I guess that is the question many people will be asking over the final 2 games. We return to New Washington to host Sylestone. The fans will still be here, it's our final home game after all, but now only pride shall be played for. GO JAGS!

Excerpts from GBC radio commentary.
“…Eiríkur Hálfdánsson in hard on Karim Ben Yousseff, scrapping hard against the boards. Cheering fans waving wolf toys and blue-and-white flags, and Hálfdánsson comes up with it, bringing it up, whips a pass cross-ice to Sigurfinnur Aðalbjörnsson who takes it around for the wrap-around – no, lays it off – and Alexandersson scores! Florian Alexandersson gives the Ice Wolves the lead with a hard snap shot off the Aðalbjörnsson pass. Vasilevskiy’s vision a bit blocked and couldn’t get down to it…”

“…Bourgeois is sent to the penalty box for tripping. Boos around the arena. Not sure if that’s just about the penalty or a bit of class commentary…”

“…Dominguez-Garcia, hard slap, saved, Ovechkin on the rebound, another save. Finngeirsson busy through this first period protecting the 1 – 0 lead. Needs more from his defence, Felix Arvidsson hustles over and muscles Giroux off the puck…”

“…that goal was coming! HUElavia have been relentless in attack through the start to this second period. Giroux the goal, Dominguez-Garcia the assist. Span away from, I think that was Guðmann Svanbergursson, and sent in a sharp pass that Giroux got a deft deflection on, taking it past Finngeirsson. 1 – 1 and things very tense…”

“…big hit from Noah Vilbjörnsson levels Garcon-Chevalier! They’re calling that charging, more than three steps. Wouldn’t be a penalty in the GHL but these are international rules and young players like Vilbjörnsson have to adapt. Fabiansson annoyed as they were just done with the penalty minutes from Þorkell Magnþórsson’s hooking penalty…”

“…Kristoffer Rudisson brings the house down with a sharp solo score! The Ice Wolves take the lead again with a short-handed goal, against the run play. Read the pass from Companioni and got down to intercept in, broke sharply right and just shovelled in at Vasilevskiy’s near post. The Ice Wolves are still alive…!”

“…battles and Luka Gunnersson comes away with it. Slick pass to Dýrmundur Asbjørnsson as the Hinteram teammates link up. But no route to goal for Asbjørnsson so he will take it around. Passes back, Asgeirsson, one-timer – goal! Savage slap from the enormous defenceman and the thundering wolf howls ring out as the Ice Wolves score what could be the goal that keeps their tournament alive…”

“…and Vasilevskiy is coming out. HUElavia need every point in this competitive group so they pull the goaltender, sixth man on. Florian Sigurfinnursson, drills Dominguez-Garcia, and he has the puck and will release it. Magnþórsson, to Asbjørnsson, who sends it into the empty net! Here at Hinteram, it’s the Hinteram winger who ices the game with the fourth goal, just fourteen seconds to play…”

4 Reasons The World Cup Of Hockey Is RIGGED: You Won't Believe #3!
By Doug P

The accusation of rigging is something that isn't taken lightly by many involved in an ongoing tournament. The achievements of the athletes and the integrity of the hosting staff are all put into question by the weight of a single statement. Investigations and evidence can prove otherwise, but the lingering stench of an accusation that powerful can linger long after the champions have been crowned. Following on from the ground-breaking revelations surrounding the 41st World Cup of Hockey by the delegation from Prusy Krolewskie (aka United Socialist Alpine Republics aka Terre Septentrionale), our award winning journalists at The Turnip have delved deep into the inner workings of our Taeshani hosts, and uncovered something truly bone chilling...

Those with heart conditions and irritable bowel syndrome click away now, we are about to uncover our five reasons for why the World Cup of Hockey is rigged. Rigged I tell you! I don't know exactly for who though I'll get back to you on that one.

~ x ~

#1 - Tournament Supervisor 'Margaret' Suspiciously Unavailable For Comment

A key witness to the activities and action seen at the current ongoing tournament has been a unidentified and undescribed witness solely known as 'Margeret'. Having overseen international hockey's premier tournament for the past 40 editions (and, indeed, every other tournament...ever). Their sudden disappearance and lack of availability to comment on these accusations are severely damning. The sporting equivalent of pleading the fifth, their inaction only deepen the wounds that these revelations have caused.

Indeed, the pseudonym 'Margeret' further adds fuel to the flames, incriminating the hockey-world even further. Is this unfortunate witness to these dodgy dealings in danger by the hockey mafia? Is the name given because of their inclusion in a witness protection programme? All of these questions will continue to have a chokehold on proceedings until this so-called Margaret is tracked down and allowed to answer such scandalous accusations.

#2 - Scorination Without Representation

Here's one for you, how can a team possibly score if their team doesn't exist? Things that make you go hmmm indeed! Up to this point, we have clear evidence that 15 teams have failed to send a team to their games, but yet, they are still allowed to play, score and record wins despite this. Furthermore, these supposed teams have not only been allowed to play their opening games, but have recorded result which could see them reach the knockout round without so much as a touch of the puck, how is this allowed to stand!

The most egregious case of this comes from Group C (C for China), where Rucuecn has won seven of their eight games despite not even sending a team to the tournament. This is further evidenced by the player database for the tournament, which currently has no record of any Rucuecn players registered for the tournament. Clearly something very fishy is going on here and the results are being generated after the fact to appease some sort of pre-made deal between the tournament organisers and these teams. I mean, why bother spending money on the finest athletes when you have the tournament all wrapped up, right?

#3 - VERY STRANGE!

How on earth can a team who looks so comfortable end up losing? That's pretty much unheard of. Time and time and time again at this tournament, we have seen match results which have completely flipped to the point of ridiculousness. Fans interviewed about the phenomenon have stated that 'comebacks happen all the time in sport, bro', but here at The Turnip, we know that something sinister is going on behind the scenes.

Last night I was leading, often solidly, in many key areas of the rink, in almost all instances run & controlled by the team expected to win. Then, one by one, they started to magically disappear as surprise goals were counted. VERY STRANGE, and the “pundits” got it completely & historically wrong!

Comments made anonymously by a trusted source from within one of the tournaments competing delegations. TJUN-ia blowing a 3-1 lead to lose, Terre blowing a 2-1 lead to lose, TJUN-ia (again) blowing a 2-1 lead to draw against a team who, at that point, were stuck on a duck. NPC West Florida, who lead 1-0 versus HUElavia go on to lose 2-1, Banija conceding a late equaliser to Fluvannia. It's all very strange!

#4 - Russia.

Freedom loving hockey fans like ourselves are expertly driven by the truth to uncover the real cause of problems like these. As is so often the case, it was very likely the dealings of socialist, communists Russia... the... Russi-ahem, umm excuse me I have a very ba-, uhh-bad cough... a-не беспокойтесь об этом, комрад, все будет хорошо, если мы будем следовать экспертному руководству верховного лидера Владимира Путина.. Ummmm, excuse me, let me just get a glass of water to clear my throat. Ahem.

~ x ~

In the end, accusations like these may never be concretely proven by special investigations, as the validity and thoroughness off said enquiries will always be put under scrutiny and may ultimately be flawed by their very nature. For now at least, the tournament will continue as planned, with the disparaged delegations already eliminated from proceedings. For the teams still in contention, they still have the chance to go for the title, even if the very idea of winning this edition of the World Cup of Hockey has now been tainted.

Thank you to all the true patriots who managed to get to the end of our exposure of the truth behind the power. If you don't hear from us in the coming few days, we've probably slipped on a banana peel and killed ourselves in extremely unfortunate circumstances, like Jeffrey Epstein. Defeat puts HUElavia in the Ropes!

Graintfjall 4-1 HUElavia

HUElavia came into Matchday 8 needing to just win in order to give some sort of security to advance to the Round-of-16. The team traveled to Grainfjall looking to sweep the team. Needless to say, that wasn't the case. The opening goal came in the 1st Period when Aðalbjörnsson went wrapping around the net looking to possibly score, when he let the puck go and allowed Alexandersson to get the puck and blast it past Vasilevskiy to make it 1-0. HUElavia would hammer hard in the 2nd Period, putting in attacks left and right when Dominguez-Garcia passed the puck to Giroux, who gave a strong blast to send it past Finngeirsson into the goal to make it 1-1. Eventually, Graintfjall would respond, as during a power play, Rudisson would get the puck from Companioni and skate down towards Vasilevskiy, slotting the puck past the Rus-HUElavian goalie into the goal to make it 2-1. Asbjørnsson would get the puck in another play, looking to shoot, but could not find an opening, decided to pass to Asgeirsson, who gave a one time shot that flew past Vasilevskiy into the goal, making it 3-1 and stunning the HUElavians. Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos would push and push to the very end of the game, even pulling Vasilevskiy, as they looked to put another attacker on the rink in the final minute. Sigurfinnursson decked Dominguez-Garcia getting the puck, who in turn passed it to Magnþórsson, and then passed it to Asbjørnsson, where he slotted it into the empty net, ending the match at 4-1. A humiliating defeat for the second time in the World Cup of Hockey for HUElavia.

With the defeat, HUElavia fall to 3rd Place with 10 Points (5-0-3), as Poafmesia moves up to 2nd Place with 10 Points (4-2-2) as well after their 2-0 victory against Bleronia. Neu Engolion's 4-1 victory at NPC West Florida clinched their spot to the Round-of-16. Thus, OfficeMart Center (18,500) in Curumba will host against Poafmersia. A match that is absolutely do-or-die for the team as they are obligated to get a victory before traveling to their last match in Group B against Neu Engolion. The arena will be sold out with a vast majority being HUElavians as they pray for the team to pull a miracle, as well as cheer on the team with passion. Vasilevskiy will start once more in front of the net with the team going all out for this match. It's a tough battle ahead of us in these two games, but nothing is impossible when we all come together to support the team.

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

BEARS GAIN GROUND AT WCOH

MEGISTOS -- The Fluvannia national hockey team managed to pull within a single game of Banija for second place in their group Thursday night with a convincing 5-1 victory over tournament newcomer Megistos. After having played to a scoreless tie in their first game against Megistos, the Bears used their penultimate home game of this World Cup to demonstrate that they will not be eliminated without one heck of a fight. "I think we looked about the best we probably looked all tournament, if I'm honest," said team captain Patrick Cleary. " We kept penalties to a minimum, didn't have a single offsides all night, only iced the puck once or twice, and the only goal let in was sort of a fluke". That it was: at 6:13 of the second period, goaltender Teukka Salama had a stick save ramp up the blade of his stick and ricochet off the crossbar, off the back of his shoulder, and in to the net; a more unusual goal is hard to come by. Luckily, at this point the Bears were already leading their visitors by a score of 3-0, so the fallout was minimal. Salama himself described the goal as "just weird. 99 times out of 100 that puck is getting stopped and I can get a glove on it for the freeze, but in this case it jumped a bit. Just had to shake it off and keep rolling, I was feeling pretty good with my performance to that point so I didn't really let it get to me."

We hope this sort of stoicism is to become more commonplace for the netminder; online conversations among supporters of the Charlottesville Chargers are known for a persistent faction that believes Salama to be streaky and unreliable, despite his performance generally placing him for consideration as the FHL's best goaltender or a contender therefor year after year.

With the win, Fluvannia now sits a mere two points behind Banija with two games remaining. They must not lose again, and in fact even tying puts their entire hopes of advancing to their first World Cup knockout stage at risk. Their remaining games are against Rwekazaland and Northwest Kalactin, both of whom they have already beaten the first time out. On the other hand, Banija must not gain more than one point for the Bears to have any shot, and their remaining games are against Megistos and Rwekazaland, both of whom they defeated the first go-'round as well. They must be both exceptionally skilled and exceedingly lucky to move on...but I'm telling you, there's still a chance.

The schedule for Fluvannia's group play is as follows:

.:: From the ASPN Blog After Thoughts in a Blip ::.
1221 hours, 20 November 2020.3

Spirits be damned... what a game!!!

Also be warned... this blog is a bit more than a 'blip' but hey... you don't like it? Sue me :P

The Ice Bisons tied their record for most goals scored in a single game - a record held since all the way back in World Cup XXV when we defeated Weatherandearthstan 8-4 - and managed to solidly defeat Kohnhead 8-3. Considering this is the same team that we drew in the first leg at 3-all... it is quite the turn around for the Ice Bisons in the second leg.

Scoring eight goals in a game is certainly a feat worthy of praise and commendation, even more impressive is to have a team who never gave up the lead to a relentless opponent. The Ice Bisons scored in the opening minutes, with Hed Torvik gaining quite a break in the third minute, poking the puck away from Amanda Davie and taking off to the net; 'The Mandalorian Shield' is not only known for his sheer size on the ice, but also for his impressive speed. As he broke away, Nelson Calhoun -- the 33-year-old starting tender for The Brains -- was just not able to get together the composure, and a quick fake brought them down and the puck went over their sprawled legs. The 1-goal lead would be short-lived, as Jaster Kal'oki would win the fight for the puck in the right corner and quickly bring it to the back of the net.

During the intermission, Kal'oki had the following to say about his third goal of the tournament:

”I have been enjoying my time on the starting lines, especially with how fortunate I was to be given this opportunity. I only hope that with [Hiteki Kia]'s return to full-health coming soon, that I will continue to be able to contribute to the team. ”

Jaster Kal'oki

Many are wondering, what with Hiteki Kia still out with a high ankle strain and his return looming over Kal'oki's first time caps on the national team as if it were a ravenfalcon flying above a wounded sheermouse, if the young Mandalorian from the University of Adirolf is going to still be on the lineup or if Kia will take his place back on the second line. Judging by the chemistry between Ero'ki Nacer and Kal'oki, it may be a sign that Hiteki's time on the team may soon be up.

The Brains would score late in the first -- a powerplay goal by Tyler Swift in the fifteenth minute -- which would shift the momentum in their favor. Unfortunately, another Hed goal in the final minute of the first would see the Ice Bisons going into the locker room with a comfortable 3-1 lead.

At the start of the second, the Ice Bisons would draw a double minor for a late hit by Nacer on Brendon Sears, and the boys would have to fend off a four-minute power play by a team that had already drawn blood once with special teams. Impressive to say the least, the Ice Bisons would come out the other side of the power play with a bit of a renewed vigor, and with the continuing momentum, a strong push by Cheung Sepi and Nestori Huan would see a great setup for Huan to score his second goal of the tournament and the fourth goal of the game in the tenth minute of the game. The Brains would not be deterred, and a pair of unanswered goals by Elsie Doyle at 15:17 and 17:01 would see the Ice Bisons' lead cut to 4-3. Just as in the first, a quick clash at centre ice during a line change would see Song Unataq nabbing the puck and catching Calhoun in a one-on-one. Both players are similar in age -- Song's 34 years just barely edging over Calhoun's 33 -- but the skill gods rolled in Song's favor as the Kohnhead tender went glove-side up and Song's shot deflected off the pole and going right under their arm. Calhoun would finish out the period, and with a score of 5-3 going into the third, Brains' Head Coach Marshall Chu would pull Calhoun for the backup Liberty Justice.

Unfortunately, sometimes putting in a cold netminder is not a worthy risk, and Hosaka Severi and Song would score back-to-back goals as The Brains' defence began to weaken. Up 7-3 in the first three minutes of the third period would not deter the Ice Bisons from continuing the pressure against the Kohnhead team. Though weakened, the defence of Kohnhead would keep the Ice Bisons at bay, maintaining possession in their zone. However, no matter how strong your defence is, if your offence cannot generate the goals, you still will not win.

In the final three minutes of the game, Song would seal the game with the eighth goal. The celebration for tieing the goal record for the National Team was somewhat more reserved than one would expect; though with a team like Gyatso-kai, celebrations outside of tournament-changing games were rare and far between. Sure, the traditional 'celly' by the goal scorer and those on the ice was to be head, but the bench remained somewhat restrained... a simple jump and holler before settling back in...

We still have two games to go... and today's game is definitely a "tournament-changing" game if there ever was one...

Today, the Ice Bisons will face off in Sundari against the Calcuttas of Valanora. This team -- ranked third in the world -- shut us down in the first leg of the tournament 3-1, and since has secured their way to the post with a 7-1-0 record and fifteen points.

Can we overtake them? Not unless they lose both of their last games and we winout. But hey, we've already secured our advancement... so maybe we should just focus on playing the games one at a time and not worry about our standings...

I'm a fan... All I care about is the standings lol

Two games left in the group stage and the Calcuttas have already comfortably qualified for the knockout rounds, all this despite initial concerns that the side might have been a bit too long in the tooth after their second matchday shock tie with Kohnhead. However as the group stage has continued to move along, the cream has risen to the top, with both ourselves and the old rivals of Gyatso-Kai having moved to the top of the table and secured our spots in the knockouts. It is our side that is the only side that has managed to find a way to defeat the Ice Bisons, a feat that is definitely worth note given the absolutely dominating nature of Gyatso-Kai in their rise to the second place position, our rival of old still within striking distance of our own side to take the Group F title. With former champions Anthor having completely fallen by the wayside, it has slowly but surely become just the two horse race in the group, as Kohnhead's early fortunes disappeared as more game footage became availble and the rest of the group was able to see what it is that they did well and how to exploit their weakness, exemplified heavily by Gyatso-Kai's eight to three demolition of the would be playoff contender in Kohnhead in the last round of matches.

If Gyatso-Kai's performance has been that of domination, then you have to say the same of our own team's vicegrip around the throat of the group, with an heavily impressive position twenty-one goal difference, having smashed thirty-one goals against our group foes while only conceding ten times through the first eight matches. The thirty-one goals scored is good for the third most in the tournament so far and the only ten conceded is good for sixth best in the tournament, though of those who have conceded less, only the completely flabbergasting statistics of the Ko-oren and Vilita & Turori teams in the anamolious Group H are in contention currently to be moving through into the knockout rounds. Those impressive statistics means that the Calcuttas have been among the most consistent as well as the most dominant teams in the entire tournament, which is quite impressive, but further highlights how good that Gyatso-Kai performance has been in that they are still within striking distance with these last two matches to go to pipping the group title from us and stealing what would be very precious seeding for the playoffs.

Speaking of the playoffs, the side needs to get mentally ready for what is going to be a bit of a culture shock for them as the tournament hosts have decided to go with a very unusual format with that of a double elimination edition. It will provide all the teams involved a bit of leeway in that they do not have to win that first match, though it will obviously give the sides who do win in that first match a massive advantage. The weird portion comes when it comes to determining the champion, as it is currently unclear whether it will be a winner take all single game or if it will continue in the double elimination format as the rest of the playoffs. For the Calcuttas, they are going to be pressing hard to continue their domination of the group to keep towards the overall top of the seeding, as there is a four way race currently for the overall top seed. The next game is the pivotal one, heading into Gyatso-Kai for the group title on the line. Be a victory or even a tie, the Calcuttas will have secured the group and keep that dream alive for the overall top seed, while a victory for the Ice Bisons keep their hopes of the group title alive and dashes a lot of the hope for the team towards keep a high seed once the playoff pairings are set.
