World Cup of Hockey XLI (41) Everything Thread

"Why'd You Want to play college hawkey?"

"Isn't it obvious? For the Babes."

"I'm serious why did you want to play college hawkey?"

"Because I love hockey. I want to go the THL like everyone else."

" Well I wanted to win a national championship. That pansy over there cheap shots me. I get tossed out of the game. He steals the ring right off my finger! How would you feel?"

With the immortal words of Ashton Appleby before the Miracle on ice* in Sao Jorge, Cafundeu, and without further adieu but to add one final quote from Lazlo Holmes, TPSN Hockey announcer... "Let's do that hockey".

So obviously dates are a little bit tentative but as of now we have 48 official sign-ups with currently 3 tentative sign-ups should we reach a theoretical 54. Currently we are looking at 8 groups of 6, or 9 Groups of 4 if that works out. Anyways. Any group draw would occur Friday night, November 6 at around 8-9 PM Eastern US, you can join me in the Discord channel if you want. The likely beginning date then would be Wednesday, November 11th, and results would continue daily thoughout the double round Group Stage proceeding from that date, with one to two likely off-dates to be decided at a later date.

Flekefjord National Team
Image

National Info
Flekkefjord is a small nation of 19,024 tucked away in Rushmore. Hockey is a very popular sport that almost the entire population plays growing up. They are a pretty self sufficient nation despite their small size. Some of the largest imports that come out of the country are from the mountains of the nation, which are home to mines rich in Coal and Steel. Flekkefjord is very much a socialist nation, and because of the small size, they need to equally distribute supplies to all citizens, especially during the freezing cold winters. Tempatures tend to be around 10 Degrees Fahrenheit during the winter and 50 during the summer. The National Stadium holds 5,000 people, and all National Team and Professional Hockey games take place there. Many jobs include Working the fishing boats, mining and working with the government to supply the nation with the necessary resources to live. Almost the entire team from the World Juniors will be returning for the National Team this year, and we are excited to see how they play during the 40th edition of the World Cup of Hockey.

Presents

'The IBEX'
NEU ENGOLLON NATIONAL HOCKEY TEAM:

The Ibex and hockey in Neu Engollon
There is one professional hockey league in Neu Engollon, the NEHL, with an associated minor league known as B League. There is also a strong collegiate tradition in the sport, the NECHL is run by NECA (Neu Engollian Collegiate Association) and the NEHL pull their players from graduates of these top schools along with some B League players. The Ibex are all pulled from the NEHL, or Neu Engollian nationals playing in equivalent foreign leagues. Andre Manon and Ernst Volkzein, both retired players from the National Ibex and the NEHL, and are in the management helm of the Ibex. The Ibex have brought home the Cup two years in a row, bookended by getting 3rd place the year previous and following, after so many previous heartbreaking runs for it over the years. After its sustained absence, they are determined to return it to its case of honor in Albertsville for another year.

Head Coach: Andre Manon
Assistant Coach: Ernst Volkzein
Head Trainer: Samuel Deseaux

Playing style: All lines are good at scoring, with the best one being the 1st line. They can all defend well, but line 2 is weaker defensively than the other ones. Most hockey fans in Terre Septentrionale likes fighting and rough play, however most of these players don't play physical and don't fight. Günther Schützenauer is a power forward and can fight. Elizabeth Yamamoto can also defend her teammates. Zygfryd Zurkowski doesn't dislike rough play either.

Rwekazaland's hockey this is very good of scoring the goal, the only thing there not really good at is DEF.

Also about Rwekazaland
Rwekazaland is a massive, efficient nation, ruled by Rwekaza mwijage with an iron fist, and notable for its prohibition of alcohol, irreverence towards religion, and punitive income tax rates. The hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical, humorless population of 4.66 billion Rwekazaanns are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

The medium-sized, corrupt government juggles the competing demands of Industry, Education, and Defense. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Rwekaza City. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 72.9%.

The frighteningly efficient Rwekazalandian economy, worth 921 trillion rwekaza dollers a year, is broadly diversified and mostly comprised of black market activity, especially in Information Technology, Arms Manufacturing, Uranium Mining, and Retail. Average income is an impressive 197,731 rwekaza dollers, but there is a large disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 788,959 per year while the poor average 33,337, a ratio of 23.7 to 1.

Maritime signalling has become tedious since only the Rwekazalandian flag can be displayed, historical commemorations regularly devolve into militaristic jingoism, the holiday spirit must not be taken to the max, and former strategic allies are threatening annihilation to Rwekazaland for reneging on weapons supply contracts. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown. Rwekazaland's national animal is the lion, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its national religion is Jehovah's Witness.

The Ko-orenite league cracked down on fighting to speed games up. Don't be surprised if the Dragonflies don't respond to a call to arms. Ice hockey is a regional (but not necessarily small) sport in Ko-oren, limited to frigid Aerellen, the temperate (but cold) northeast, and parts of the unwelcoming west coast. Venues are limited, and Aerellen's largest venue hosts multiple games per day while the season is on, so speeding up games and keeping them plannable is key. Languages used by the team are Dutch and Aerellen (Ko-orenite). Aerellen names are easily recognisable, they start with vowels, featuring many Au, Ao, Ai, Ae combinations at the start of each word.

All players not already playing for foreign teams are for sale, and are willing to play in high level professional teams.

Team Mercedini (10)

Postby Mercedini » Fri Nov 06, 2020 12:48 pm

Mercedinian Hockey Federation presents...

Image
Image

Head Coach: Image Antonio Selignsky • Trigramme: MRC • Nickname: The Kingfishers

Despite losing their seat at Hockey's top governing body, Mercedini have returned to Hockey's premier tournament to contest for a first title, and hoping to claim back their Pot 1 status which they lost last edition. Two editions ago, an unfunded Mercedinian National Team stood firm against some of the world's best to finish in fourth place, losing out to our new bogey team, Neu Engollon. Last time round, however, Mercedini failed to advance from the group stage despite their third seeding going into the 40th edition, meaning the Kingfishers drop seven spots into tenth for the 41st edition. With Mercedini's struggling domestic scene, it looks as there will be no changes to the team which finish third in their group. However, with more experience there is hope that the Kingfishers can put together a solid run (like Mercedinian teams of the past) to put themselves in the mix for the trophy. Many expected Dini to peak following their runner-up medal but their consistency had kept them as a force in world hockey before their group stage exit. Now going into the tournament as a Pot 2 side, the Kingfishers will have to go against the perennial juggernauts and the more contemporary challengers of recent editions. It's sure to be a long road ahead as the team rebuilds.

Mercedinian-style hockey is much more irregular than its regulation counterparts from other nations, with players often staying on the ice for large periods of time, rarely changing only for injuries and drastic tactical changes. Changes are typically made during the inter-period intervals, game pauses/delays, or during special events such as power plays or short-handed periods, where management and coaches then assess tactics and change the line-ups from there. Changes are often made man for man at a specific position on the ice rather than a whole line change all at once, meaning there can be hundreds of different combination of players available to the coaching staff throughout the tournament, all depending on the opponents they are playing. This means Mercedinian hockey players are extremely fit and have tremendous stamina to last vast swathes of the period. However, as a trade-off, tactical adaptability does become a challenge, with players excelling in some areas while lacking in others, with those qualities dependant on their preferred play styles in the game. With tournaments getting longer and longer through the editions, fatigue has been a major player in stifling Mercedinian runs for the crown.

GOALTENDERS
GT Erik Malinsky 26 Image Zoloroni City Icers
GT Marin Aalan 25 Image Carlsgrunik Metropolitan Rangers
GT Matsuk Zershevic 21 Image Blue Strike Zoloroni

Icers' Malinsky gets the nod as first choice goaltender for the tournament as he earns his position as the nation's number one with his club winning the most recent MSL season. However, it's likely that the second and third choice for Mercedini will almost certainly get a run out during games versus middling teams or in potential dead rubbers, if they work their way to a position where they can afford to take their foot off the gas for a couple of matches. Marin Aalan will be in accompaniment once again he will be joined by Blue Strike's latest edition to their roster, Matsuk Zershevic (thanks to his top performances which saw his team secure HCL hockey for the first time). The three goaltenders each having different positives and negatives which can be used to the teams advantage depending on the opponent. Defensive technique will need to be assessed after the team conceded leaky goals last edition which cost them a spot in the knockout rounds, but talent is certainly in abundance from he three goaltenders listed, they simply need to perform.

DEFENDERS
D Roberto Signale 25 Image AHC Langtree
D Giorgio Gagliano 23 Image AHC Langtree

D Ivan Pirelli 27 Image Rafelonia Gold Stars
D Ibrahim Sepchuk 29 Image Ozzaya Agranka Synthesis

D Milos Rebrani 22 Image Zoloroni City Icers
D Simeon Entselli 20 Image Acoflosa Penguins

No changes in the defensive roster which was completely overhauled last edition, with the new management confirming every player that was bought in as the new guard in the 40th edition, for the 41st. For all three lines called up for the World Cup of Hockey, this will be their second tournament following their maiden appearance in Quebec. It is completely domestically based, giving the defensive line more of the essence of Mercedinian hockey, something with previous rosters (featuring players from Novaya Zemlya and Neu Engollon) lacked. Whether this group of MSL players can gel enough to form a cohesive unit in short space of time remains to be seen. Although their individual performances in the previous season of the MSL has clearly impressed national team coaches enough to warrant a run-out in the famed blue and black. They certainly didn't impress too much last edition, but development and second chances are part of the Mercedinian course, this defensive roster must grab that second chance this time around.

ATTACKERS

AL Elias Kozhikina 26 Image Ozzaya Agranka Synthesis
AC Pedro Antic 22 Image SKK Ogdenagorv
AR Lambeth Carpic 22 Image ZSCYA

When it comes to attacking prowess, Mercedini are one of the world leaders in the sport of football, but hockey is largely an untouched market when it comes to internationally recognised players in many reaches of the multiverse. Still, Mercedini have got a series of marquee names on their rosters with a series of league titles sprinkled around the names present for the national team. The days of foreign leagues being represented are now gone thanks to the rise of the MSL and Mercedini's strong footing within the hockey community. There's plenty of support in the second and third lines of the attacking roster with Mercedinian league clubs up and down the country represented well by the number of players in this roster. Last time around, the attacking roster was one of the only bright spots of a poor campaign for the Mercedinians, but they simply couldn't net enough goals to make up for their leaky performances at the back, which results in a rather shocking elimination. There's plenty to be excited about if you are a fan of the Mercedinian National Team, especially with a second division player present in the roster, a first for the nation. We all wait with baited breath for the first match of the tournament to see whether all this practice has finally paid off.

Siovanija & Teusland National Hockey Team

World Cup of Hockey 40 Champions

Facts

Highest Domestic League: Ehrenliga

Coach: Aaron Kuhn (Stelburg Kaisers)

Aaron Kuhn has had an excellent run in recent times. He coached the Goldhorns to a world title at World Cup of Hockey 40, and followed it up with a Strauss Cup win with the Stelburg Kaisers. The task begins anew, however, and Kuhn’s focus now turns to defending that World Cup title. WCoH 40 was a generational shift for the team - the emergence of Timo Schlager and Edwin Ranger as its leaders. But Gunter Pfenning’s ‘golden goal’ showed that the old guard can still have an impact on the team as well. There are some changes on the roster this time as well - some players who were in supporting roles last time around take bigger roles, and there are a few new faces too. Evgeni Tomic and Aleksej Knejz are both examples of some younger players taking on a bigger role, while Volen Atanasov and Robert Schock represent names totally new to the blue and gold jerseys. Kuhn’s team will be playing the same, similar style they always have: fast-paced and physical hockey, designed to wear other teams down and win through skill and speed. With 17 returning players from the triumph of World Cup of Hockey 40, there’s only one thing on the mind for this team: defend the crown.

Forward Units

Forward Line 1

RW -- Razvigor Tsvetanov -- Admirala Pomorie -- 28y/o -- #19
C -- Timo Schlager -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 26y/o -- #97
LW -- Frank Heider -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 27y/o -- #16

This line did the most damage for the Goldhorns at World Cup of Hockey 40 - with the way led by Timo Schlager, the Marlesee star who has also been the Ehrenliga’s MVP for the last two seasons in a row. A speedy, dynamic centre, Schlager is an explosive skater who uses incredible puck skill and hockey IQ to dominate the game. Razvigor Tsvetanov’s celebrations in the wake of the world title became legendary, and he followed it up with another 50 goal campaign in the Republikaliga. He may be the best goalscorer this country has ever seen, and scored in both games of the World Cup of Hockey 40 Final. Tsvetanov is a big-bodied power forward, capable of using his body, and a menace in front of the net. Watch out for his one-timer on the power play. Joining these two on the left wing is Frank Heider. Heider is an excellent playmaker who seems at times like he has eyes in the back of his head - especially when on the ice with his Marlesee teammate Schlager, with whom he has an excellent partnership. Expect the Goldhorns’ top talent to lead the way again.

Forward Line 2

RW -- Aleksej Knejz -- Felsenkirchen Jets -- 20y/o -- #93
C -- Edwin Ranger -- Stelburg Kaisers -- 25y/o -- #34
LW -- Vitomir Glaskov -- Energija Chernovets -- 23y/o -- #20

The second line sees some major changes from last tournament, but is still centred by Edwin Ranger. Ranger is commonly cited as the second best player in the Ehrenliga, after Schlager, and hit 58 goals this season to win a second straight scoring title. What’s more, he led his Kaisers to a Strauss Cup championship, the first of his career. Ranger is on fire at the moment, and the big, sturdy centre has the best wrist shot on the team, something for opposition goaltenders to fear. Joining him on the second line is Aleksej Knejz, who had a breakout year for the Jets as they reached the Strauss Cup Final - losing to Ranger and the Kaisers. Knejz has been called by many ‘the next Razvigor Tsvetanov,’ and is a big-bodied power forward as well. Knejz is somewhat faster than Tsvetanov, however, and is a big threat down the right side as it doesn’t take him long to get going. Vitomir Glaskov is the dynamic Chernovets centre who plays on the wing for his country. Last time around, it was as a role player on the 3rd line. At this tournament, he will be expected to provide more of the skill that has made him Chernovets’ main man. Another quick player, he contributes to what is probably overall the fastest line on this time, and one that will be relied on to do plenty of scoring.

Forward Line 3

RW -- Christian Hasselberger -- Pinguine Ternau -- 30y/o -- #24
C -- Gunter Pfenning -- St. Jakob Saints -- 35y/o -- #9
LW -- Veselin Filipov -- Olympia Borograd -- 33y/o -- #15

On the pantheon of Siovanija & Teusland hockey heroes, Gunter Pfenning was already going to be in very good standing on the day he finally hangs up his skates. But scoring the winning goal in the World Cup of Hockey 40 championship? That takes him up another level. Of all the moments in his storied career, that one certainly takes the cake. This tournament might just be his last go around in the blue and gold - at age 35, who knows what the future holds for the captain? But he’s determined to give it his all for his country yet again. A powerful, smart centre, in his prime Pfenning was described by some as a ‘superstar grinder,’ battling hard for every puck and using his skill to finish the job. That’s the role he played last time around, and that’s the role he plays here again. He’s joined on a third line energy unit by Pinguine Ternau forward Christian Hasselberger. Hasselberger is a big-game, physical player, known for a highlight reel of hits more so than skill plays. But the gritty forward isn’t without skill: he’s had multiple 20 goal seasons in the Ehrenliga, and brings 110% effort every single game he plays. He’s been a very key role player the last few tournaments for the Goldhorns, and assisted on the winning goal of World Cup of Hockey 40. How’s that for a resume? Joining them on this line is Veselin Filipov, the Olympia winger who is quite well-regarded as a two-way player. He adds a bit to the offensive production of this line, having led his club in goals for most of his career, and with

Forward Line 4

RW -- Torsten Bohm -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 28y/o -- #12
C -- Erhard Lasker -- Eisbaren Stelburg -- 28y/o -- #37
LW -- Vincent Schell -- Eisbaren Stelburg -- 29y/o -- #21

This is the line that Aaron Kuhn will rely on as the shutdown line, matching up against the best lines of other countries. And they did an excellent job of it last time around - Erhard Lasker showing why he’s considered the best two-way centre in the Ehrenliga. The thing about this line - especially with the addition of Torsten Bohm - is how quickly they can turn around on you, and create offence of their own. Lasker and his Eisbaren Stelburg teammate Vincent Schell are some of the best players in transition on this team, and can catch opposing defenders off guard with just how quickly they can flip the script on the ice. Torsten Bohm will be the main option for goals here, having 35 of them in the Ehrenliga last season. He’s good at creating space for himself, and also at scoring at opportune times - 10 of his goals were game-winners. And with a strong playmaker like Erhard Lasker playing alongside him up the centre, he’ll be hoping to create some clutch moments of his own at this tournament.

Defensive Pairings

Defensive Pair 1

D -- Toni Mihelic -- Olympia Borograd -- 25y/o -- #5
D -- Evgeni Tomic -- Energija Chernovets -- 21y/o -- #2

The Goldhorns’ top defence pairing sees Toni Mihelic, the reigning Stanimir Slezak Trophy winner as best defenseman of the Ehrenliga, hoping to pick up right where he left off last time around. Mihelic led all Goldhorns defencemen in points at WCoH 40, and the smooth skating defender was clearly the Goldhorns’ best puck mover. He’s an excellent passer, who will be vital in the set-up play for this team, but also can surprise with a strong shot from the point. Lining up beside him is Evgeni Tomic, one of the best young defencemen in the Ehrenliga. Tomic is a mean, brutal defender who hits hard and isn’t afraid to throw around his size. At 6’6, 225 pounds, he’s a hard hitter and beware if you have your head down coming over the blue line. What’s even more terrifying about Tomic is how quickly he can move around despite it - an excellent skater. Tomic also has a cannon of a slapshot, officially now the hardest in the Ehrenliga, which he isn’t afraid to use from the point, and it can lead to opportunities for deflections for his team-mates - if not already in the back of the net itself.

Defensive Pair 2

D -- Jorg Gottschall -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 30y/o -- #3
D -- Stefan Schiele -- Marzig Wolves -- 23y/o -- #8

Jorg Gottschall has consistently been one of the best defencemen in the Ehrenliga during his career - as a key player for the Seelowe Marlesee team that won the Strauss Cup two seasons ago. He’s adept at knowing when to jump up in the rush, but is well-rounded and quite capable in his own zone as well. He generates a great deal of offence for this team, and can be counted on as a skilled puck-mover. This time, he’s paired up with Stefan Schiele, the Marzig Wolves defenceman who has such a good reputation at a young age. He has great vision on the ice, seeming at times as if he can see the entire rink when he moves the puck. Skilled and quick, Schiele is a great powerplay quarterback as well. He’s creative, and this duo is one that can generate plenty of offence. When they are on the ice with Edwin Ranger and the second line, look for them to try to pin the opposing team in their own zone for the entire shift.

Defensive Pair 3

D -- Volen Atanasov -- Olympia Borograd -- 24y/o -- #26
D -- Gregor Herder -- Stelburg Kaisers -- 32y/o -- #6

Volen Atanasov is Toni Mihelic’s partner at Olympia Borograd, and is another point-producing, puck-moving defencemen. He’s quite quick, and is perhaps a bit more willing to shoot than Mihelic - a powerful wrist shot that is rarely off target. One thing Atanasov is excellent at is leading the rush - he always seems to know when to hang on to it, or when to send a pass to a teammate. Beside him will be Gregor Herder, the veteran defender at his best in his own zone. He’s big and rough, and incredibly strong, making him difficult for opposing forwards to face in front of the net. Herder has a strong slapshot, and good sense on the puck. His speed has dropped off a bit, however, and he’s no longer suitable for the top pair. But as a veteran depth defenceman, he’ll do an excellent job for this team.

Extra Skaters

LW -- Alex Schnyder -- Teufelsberg Devils -- 33y/o -- #7
C -- Leon Goss -- Marzig Wolves -- 21y/o -- #61
RW -- Frank Keric -- Kapitala Borograd -- 23y/o -- #44
D -- Koloman Schwartzmann -- Teufelsberg Devils -- 30y/o -- #40
D -- Niclas Engel -- Felsenkirchen Jets -- 29y/o -- #28

Some familiar faces in the extra skaters named by the Goldhorns for this tournament. Alex Schnyder has been a staple in the national team, usually a top six forward. But two seasons of injuries and a general decline leave him in the press box for this tournament, and some domestic media have argued he shouldn’t be here at all, instead feeling the Jets’ Rafael Werner should take his place. If Schnyder gets a chance on the ice, he’ll be eager to prove why he’s still one of the best. Leon Goss and Frank Keric are both names to watch for the future of this team, each having strong seasons in the Ehrenliga last year as younger players - Goss in particular projects as someone who could be an Edwin Ranger-lite in a few years time. Koloman Schwartzmann is another name usually seen in the Goldhorns’ top 4 defence - but poor play from him sees a spot reserved for him instead with his Devils teammate Schnyder in the press box. Schwartzmann has become quite undisciplined, and it’s not a risk the Goldhorns want to take. Niclas Engel will be happy to be here, and hoping to get a shot - he was a stud for the Jets as they made a run to the Strauss Cup final, a strong defender who might just end up with a key role on this team. It’s expected that the 13th forward for the tournament will mostly be Leon Goss, and the 7th defenceman will be Niclas Engel.

Goalies

G -- David Wagner -- Stelburg Kaisers -- 33y/o -- #1
G -- Robert Schock -- Stelburg Kaisers -- 25y/o -- #29
G -- Volker Seiden -- Eisbaren Stelburg -- 29y/o -- #30

The selection in net was always going to be the biggest question this tournament, especially after the Stelburg Kaisers went to a 1A-1B situation with starter Wagner and usual backup Schock. What ensued was a year-long battle for the starter’s job, with both men playing excellent. In the playoffs, an injury to Wagner meant Schock played the first two rounds, and he was excellent. In the final, Wagner returned to his crease as the Kaisers won the Strauss Cup, but the word is Schock will be the starter next season. It appears the battle carries over to the national team. David Wagner is a national legend after a great performance at World Cup of Hockey 40, but Schock has every chance and will be given every opportunity to snatch away the starter’s job. Behind them is Volker Seiden, who has been consistently reliable and quite popular in the national team dressing room - all you could ever want from a third goalie. The hope from coach Aaron Kuhn is that the Wagner-Schock battle for the crease will propel both men to an even higher level of play, as it did for the Kaisers this season.

The Goldhorns will continue to wear the jerseys designed by Donnaconan design company Infinite for the 41st World Cup of Hockey. The only change comes to the Hockey Siovanija & Teusland logo - which was updated with a gold star above the crest to represent the world championship at World Cup of Hockey 40. Otherwise, however, it’s the same blue and gold ‘triple edelweiss’ jerseys that the nation has come to love so dearly. Jerseys that were already well-regarded became legendary after the championship, and it’s unlikely that they will be changed in the near future.

Group and Schedule

The Goldhorns have been drawn into Group D for the World Cup of Hockey, alongside Quebec, Terre Septentrionale, Austrakia, New Waldensia and United Hemand Istria. The only team that the Goldhorns have history with at this level is Quebec, who the Goldhorns faced in their first competitive game at World Cup of Hockey 35, and also in the group stage of World Cup of Hockey 36. Other than that, however, the Goldhorns have not faced any of these teams in the World Cup of Hockey. The Goldhorns will need to be careful - as defending champions, and the world #1, there is a massive target on their backs, and each one of these teams would be more than happy to make a statement against them. Here is the Goldhorns’ schedule for the group stage. All games are to be played at the Waterworks Arena in Laketown, Taeshan.

MD1: United Hemand Istria vs Siovanija & Teusland
MD2: Siovanija & Teusland vs Quebec
MD3: Terre Septentrionale vs Siovanija & Teusland
MD4: Siovanija & Teusland vs New Waldensia
MD5: Austrakia vs Siovanija & Teusland
MD6: Siovanija & Teusland vs United Hemand Istria
MD7: Quebec vs Siovanija & Teusland
MD8: Siovanija & Teusland vs Terre Septentrionale
MD9: New Waldensia vs Siovanija & Teusland
MD10: Siovanija & Teusland vs Austrakia

Hockey Night in Siovanija & Teusland will be broadcasting live from Taeshan for the duration of the tournament, and we’ll have all the updates as Siovanija & Teusland compete once again at the World Cup of Hockey. Come on you Goldhorns!

Ice hockey is the most popular sport in Elejamie, followed by football/soccer (both are acceptable in Elejamie) and rugby [union], In fact, the men's national team - nicknamed the Icy Elephants, not to be confused with the ENIHL team Elejamie City Ice Elephants - are one of the best teams in the multiverse, having made the World Cup of Hockey finals four times in four consecutive competitions; winning two (29th edition against Gregoryisgodistan and 31st edition against Valanora) and losing two (30th and 32nd, both times against disliked rivals Valanora), as well as two bronze medal games; although the B-team won a gold medal in the men's ice hockey at the 12th Winter Olympics, they're considered a different team and as a result their achievement is not counted alongside the two WCoH wins. They've also been one of the best teams in the tournament, very nearly making it out of the group stage in their inaugural tournament, making it to the quarter-finals in their second, winning the bronze in their third and staying in the top ten in rankings since the 29th edition (and top 3 since the 30th WCoH), even nabbing a third trophy in the 35th edition.

No, there's not going to be a recap of the last WCoH I was in, not for this bit or for a pre-tourney RP. I really don't want to go into any detail about what a shitshow that whole performance was, though I have briefly gone into it during the JWHC so read up on that if you want an explainer for everything. I just pray to whatever deity there is that I don't suck as much this time.

(N.B. Although Kasputin has since retired from the national team, I will be using these uniforms until I win a fourth trophy, whenever that'll be)

Home to the Davenport Dockers - the most successful team in the ENIHL (Elejamian National Ice Hockey League) - and the national team. Built in 1992 to replace Dockside Stadium, which was eventually demolished in 1995, Davenport Stadium is the largest ice hockey arena in Elejamie, with a capacity of 18,500. The stadium was originally known as the Davenport Stadium but it also spent a brief spell in the early 2000s as the Rapid Beer Co. Stadium. Eventually, it was renamed the Declan Madgwick Memorial Stadium just in time for the start of the 2015/16 season, in honour of famed politician and diplomat Declan Madgwick (1927-2015).

For the record: In the northwest of Elejamie, the term "stadium" is used for any building which hosts a professional sports team even if they don't play on a pitch.

Built in 1989, the HomeFiller Arena is also known as the Coventry Arena, especially in situations where HomeFiller isn't sponsoring the event in question. With a total capacity of 17,000, it is also home to the Coventry Puffins; the backup stadium for the national ice hockey and basketball teams; home to the junior and U-18 ice hockey teams; and home to the Coventry Nets basketball team. It entered a sponsorship deal with furniture store HomeFiller in 2013. The deal, which was initially set to expire in 2017, has been extended to 2023.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose My Scorers: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Yes
RP Injuries to My Players: Yes (but nothing too serious; one person at a time and they can't be out for anything longer than two games. Killing is definitely out)
Godmod Injuries to My Players: Yes (same as above)
RP Penalties for My Players: Yes
RP Ejections for My Players: Yes (again, one person per game and the longest they can be suspended for is one match)
Godmod Other Events: Depends on what it is. Fighting I'm OK with but it might be a good idea to TG anything else.

  • "Keh-reen Mah-loh-tahn"; "Ah-lah-YEHM Mahn ees-hoh-kee teem".
  • Stacy Saunders is still a guy, if anyone's wondering. So, if you do mention him in your RP, make sure you say "he", "him" and "his" instead of "she" and "her".
  • In the event that any of my players interest you and you want to sign them, please tell me which one you want, which club wants them and all the details.
  • Please get back to me with RP info by 8pm BST. Otherwise, I'll go ahead and put my own stuff in.
  • My main enforcers are Lupe, Carlos Sierra, Ethan Swinburne, Pael Atener, Mike Keller, Francisco Solano and Bill Judge (who was Elejamie's main enforcer during WJHC8). The only players that don't fight are Stacy Saunders, Cerin Meloten and Harrison Blackburn. Everyone else can fight, just not as often as those first guys I've mentioned.
  • Elejamie will wear their alt kit on MD1, MD7 and, should they make it there, QF.
  • Although "Carpio" appears on his jersey, Kiko Carpio is usually on a full name basis when he's being commentated on. I won't complain if you just call him "Carpio", though.
  • Danilo and Felipe Barajas are twin brothers, with Danilo being the oldest by about five minutes. Peter Berg's younger brother George played for the junior team; however, the two of them aren't related to assistant coach and ice hockey veteran Ron Berg. And usual second forward line left-winger Lucas Madgwick is the son of head coach and Elejamian hockey legend Michael Madgwick.

Coach: Mikael Eloranta - 36

1st Line
C Asgeir Andenæs - 27 (Kyethas Firestorm) Sublime skater and has a laser precise pass. He has never been a great finisher, but his eye for the teammate is unrivaled in Tikariot.
LW Thyge Aarestrup - 32 (Ravencroft Talons) Great stick handling and quick reaction skills make him one of the most feared snipers of the THL. His speed has gone down a bit with age, but that has not slowed down his scoring.
RW John Draven - 27 (Xanark Frostbite) Very physical player with a very hard shot. Important in recovering the puck and reinstating the attack.

2nd Line
C Sebastian Svedberg - 18 (Ilmarcess Citadel) The focal point of the Junior Owls, great speed and extremely precise passer. Could have a better scoring touch, but he more than makes up for it with his assists.
LW Anders Strandberg - 17 (Thorncliff Ravens) A sniper that has seen THL time already, very nimble on the skates and with superior stick handling skills.
RW Nicholas Perrier - 17 (Samakar Storm) More physical than the other two, Perrier can make room for other players to push into, not the fastest, but hard and precise shot.

3rd Line
C Xtephan Kristoffersson - 30 (Xanark Frostbite) Possesses decent speed and a very hard slapshot, but is the maybe most physical player on the Tikariot team. His body checks are feared throughout the league and he has a tendency to use his body to block shots.
LW Arttu Vainola - 22 (Meshdoy Saints) Physical shutdown forward that puts his own body at risk to avoid the opposing forwards to make it into the Tikariot zone. Known to draw too many penalties, though, however his strong defensive play outweighs his defensive liabilities.
RW Luke McNeely - 20 (Port Rhovanyon Kraken) The biggest offensive threat out of the three he uses his speed to catch up with opponents, less his body, but he is the missing link to Kristoffersson and Vainola.

4th Line
C Martin Hawksworth - 26 (Baraldhur Leopards) Wily player with swagger, solid all-around player without anything truly outstanding.
LW Christian Lagergren - 29 (Carathyr Guard) Possesses great speed and stick handling, but has issues scoring goals. He can, however, open up gaps for his linemates.
RW Pierre-Henri Sarllac - 23 (Saevaroy Serpents) Built like a brick wall, tall and wide. Goals of his are considered a super power, because they are so rare, but he will shut down the opponents with remarkable efficiency.

1st Defensive Line
LD Esper Lundh - 21 (Solcor River Marauders) Fast and physical, with a great slapshot. Also has a great eye for the forwards to open the play quickly and give the team a man advantage on the breakaway.
RD Harry Smithson - 37 (Wyvernwood Wraiths) Not the fastest anymore due to his age, but has a tremendous defensive presence with a punishing check.

2nd Defensive Line
LD Stian Rønnow - 32 (Fort Cafragilis Defenders) Former winger turned defender, but has been re-trained to defenseman to take advantage of his speed and shotblocking abilities.
RD Rasmus Steenstrup - 22 (Avanaroch Avalanche) Very heavy hitter like a brick wall when it comes to defending. Not the best stickhandler, but has a very heavy shot.

3rd Defensive Line
LD Aidan Blairon - 24 (Dhun Lagarr Paladins) Least physical player of the defense, but has incredible speed and stickhandling that enables him to take the puck off the opponent before having to resort to a check.
RD Martin Connolly - 26 (Meshdoy Saints) Surprising offensive upside despite being regarded as shutdown defender. Quick hands help with that.

Goalkeepers
GK Tobias Kierkegaard - 29 (Kyethas Rivermen) Classic butterfly tender, very agile with great technique. Only problem are some high shots.
GK Ludvig Aagesen - 26 (Ravencroft Talons) Great reflexes and will come out of the goal to divert a puck, allows too many deflections, though.

Reserves
C Romeo Avery - 28 (Fort Viljan Warriors)
C Paulus Thiessen - 33 (Thorncliff Ravens)
LW Thorkild Eikemo - 22 (Morannon Monsters)
LW Lloyd Freyson - 29 (Oriannor Skyhawks)
RW Petteri Urpilainen - 24 (Solcor River Marauders)
RW Francois Bergeron - 27 (Skarraborg Tundra Thunder)
LD Elias Talvitie - 22 (Kyethas Firestorm)
LD Carl Samuel - 30 (Guillarim Lions)
RD Oliver Arvands - 28 (Baraldhur Leopards)
RD Rasmus Aronsson - 20 (Paycarh Pumas)
GK Frank Cosentino - 23 (Ilmarcess Citadel)
GK Sebastian Jäderholm - 31 (Fort Viljan Warriors)

Team name: Græntfjall
TLA: GRÆ [GRF when not available]
Demonym: Græntfjaller
Team nickname: Ice Wolves

Kit: White with blue detail and blue socks; alternate is the reverse. Because all Græntfjaller names are patronymic, players typically have their first name on the backs of their shirts.

Coach: Freybjörn Fabiansson
Assistants: Per Dansson, Marís Finnsson

After the poor performance at WCoH 40, which saw the Ice Wolves go 3-5-2 and fail to make the playoffs, Kolbein Ölversson has been let go and a new coaching staff brought in. Having spent a little time working abroad, Freybjörn has a slightly more nuanced grasp of international rules. The emphasis for the team remains on a defense-first, heavily physical style of play, however.

Squad: A 22-person squad has been named for the tournament.
  • The Græntfjaller Hockey League (GHL) is a small league, but rivals the GPL (football) for popularity in terms of the national sport.
  • Græntfjaller players tend to be on the bigger side by [human] standards, and very physical, fore-checking and back-checking with equal vigor. But this means trading off for speed and most are not skilled puck-handlers by international standards. They hit a lot of one-timers.
  • GHL rules are laxer on charging, cross-checking, and shots to the head than international rules.
  • Fighting is a basically unknown phenomenon in the GHL.
  • Players in italics were not part of the previous squad.
1. Tom Finngeirsson (Laafjörður) – G
2. Felix Arvidsson (Kangasdorf) – D
3. Kristoffer Rudisson (Ilsburg) – RW [A]
13. Vígþór Patrekursson (Ilsburg) – G
15. Sigurfinnur Aðalbjörnsson (Akurgarten) – RW
19. Florian Alexandersson (Ilsburg) – C
20. Þorkell Magnþórsson (Mühlrich) – LW
21. Eiríkur Hálfdánsson (Harmersgrunn) – LW
26. Dýrmundur Asbjørnsson (Hinteram) – RW
39. Auðunn Friðlaugursson (Akurgarten) – LW
42. Hallgeir Eyðolvursson (Laafjörður) – D
45. Aapeli Guttisson (Harmersgrunn) – G
64. Luka Gunnersson (Hinteram) – C
67. Noah Vilbjörnsson (Ilsburg) – LW
68. Jack Jokulsson (Kangasdorf) – C
77. Þórlaugur Skíðisson (Laafjörður) – RW
79. Iivo Torkildsson (Kangasdorf) – D
81. Anakol Maximiliansson (Haderhavn) – C
84. Florian Sigurfinnursson (Kangasdorf) – D [C]
87. Bjarnleifur Asgeirsson (free agent) – D [A]
89. Fabian Toresson (Mühlrich) – D
96. Guðmann Svanbergursson (Laafjörður) – D

Lines will be flexible and adjusted over the course of the tournament but provisionally:

GK1: Tom
The only success at the WCoH proved to be Tom, a 20 year old 6’3” hybrid-style goalkeeper who has already proven himself the most consistent of the GHL goalkeepers, even if he's generally played on teams without the offensive power to deliver many wins.

D1: Florian – Iivo
D2: Felix – Bjarnleifur
D3: Guðmann – Fabian
7th: Hallgeir
League champions Kangasdorf supply the entire first defensive line, providing the team with a succession of big, heavy hard-hitters. The rest are mostly even bigger, even heavier, and even harder-hitting, but Bjarnleifur – fleeing relegation-bound Schwakirchen and looking to become the first Græntfjaller to play overseas – is by far the best two-way player.

L1: Auðunn – Jack – Þórlaugur
L2: Noah – Anakol – Kristoffer
L3: Þorkell – Luka – Dýrmundur
L4: Eiríkur – Florian – Sigurfinnur
Akurgarten aren't the strongest side but provide much of the first line. Auðunn is a bruising sniper, Jack the only player with any real speed or puck-handling skill. Younger and less experienced than the defensemen, the offense is still big and slow by international standards.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my Scorers: Yes
Choose Scoring Events: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Maybe, ask first if you have something unusual planned
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes, but let me determine the severity
Godmod Injuries to my Players: Maybe, ask first and let me determine the severity
Godmod Other Events: Maybe, ask first

A note on penalties: Græntfjallers will probably be perceived as dirty players by international standards, but they are not intentionally out to inflict cheap shots, but rather used to league rules that are laxer on checking. Most could not even spell ‘concussion protocol’.

A note on fighting: Græntfjallers will not initiate fights. Please do not RP my players initiating fights, ever. That said, if someone else starts a fight, they may respond. Most should be physically able to handle themselves; I don’t object to you RPing your players ‘winning’ fights but don’t have them mop the ice with mine.

A note on pictures: Please do not use photographs of RL people/teams/stadiums and say they are my players/team/country.

Style Modifier: -5

Arenas:

Græntfjaller arenas are safe and well-constructed, if rather boring. Small allocations of tickets for visiting fans will be available. (You can RP fans coming to the country for games if you wish, but please do not RP acts of violence in Græntfjall without asking me first). Three of the arenas [VHA, IBA, and GNA] are located in the capital city, while the WMM Arena is in the industrial heartland of the country. Laafjörður play out in the western hinterlands in the least accessible and least tourist friendly of the host communities.

World Cup of Hockey Group Stage Preview
@ Shebnatsiya Ice Palace - Shebchesik, Mercedini

Mercedinian Reconstruction
The Kingfishers return to the fold in the World Cup of Hockey, entering this tournament as a Pot 2 side for the first time in four editions, prompting calls for a complete overhaul of the hockey system within Mercedini. Those calls were fresh in the minds of the Mercedinian Hockey Federation following their shock exit in the Group Stages last edition. The team went into the tournament as the World #3's, but could only finish third in a competitive group, knocking the four time semifinalist out of the tournament in one of the biggest surprises of the tournament. The Kingfishers now enter the 41st edition ranked 10th in the world, defending a ranking and coefficient which is set to lose it's best two editions next. Hope of a return to the knockout rounds has been restored following the group draw, so let's see how it all went down and let's see the far-flung places Mercedini will be heading two during the double round-robin group stage.

The sun was setting on the north-western city of Shebchetsik as the balls rattled and swirled around the group pots in Taeshan, with Mercedini made to wait for their draw by virtue of being in the second pot to come out. As all the big names came out, it was clear that Dini will have to play two matches against one of these titans, be that the perennial juggernauts or the new nations making a name for themselves. However, there was a black sheep in the shape of the hosts that drew the attention of all of their prospective opponents from the lower pots. By virtue of their winning host bid, Taeshan were secured of their A1 spot in the Group Stage, but with their ranking of 23rd it would make everybody else's route to the knockouts easier on paper, since they wouldn't be facing off against a Top 10 side. Pot 2 was next, and fortuitously, Mercedini came out first, meaning they would be joining host Taeshan in Group A. It was the ideal situation on paper for the Mercedinian, who despite dropping down into Pot 2 for this edition, would still go into the group as the highest ranked nation. Outside of that tidbit, Dini will also face previous opponents in Lorenthia, Ranoria, and former multiple-time champions Elejamie. Rounding out the group will be The Frozen Forrest, who will play Mercedini for the first time on the third match day when they meet in the Shebnastiya Ice Palace.

World Cup of Hockey XLI • Group A
Elejamie (55)
Mercedini (10)
Lorenthia (44)
Ranoria (29)
Taeshan (23, Host)
The Frozen Forrest (UR)

Group A • MD1
Mercedini vs. Taeshan @Shebnatsiya Ice Palace - Shebchetsik, Mercedini

This means that the group stage will certainly be an interesting one with plenty of stories to be created from Group A alone. Taeshan will be looking to make a run as hosts, Dini will be hoping they can return to the knockout stage and avoid another upset as the highest ranked team in the group, Elejamie would want to return to their untouchable status of editions past, while finally Ranoria, Lorenthia and The Frozen Forrest are all looking to escape the group and put together a run of their own as the underdogs. Around the rest of the groups, it's normal fare of juggernauts taking on newcomers, but each and every edition sees more groups with more competitive line-ups. We have seen first hand that anything can happen, and that is more relevant now. Groups A, B, D and H all have three or more challengers for the title, and will see at least one from each group fall by the wayside at this early stage. It happened to us last edition, two in a row would likely be fatal to title chances in upcoming and future editions.

The team would want to rewrite the wrongs of last edition, however, the defensive frailties and lack of attacking threat could very well come back to haunt the Mercedinian in this edition, as it did last edition. They have been given the best possible chance with their favourable group stage draw, they just need to capitalise on that and set their stall out early. Arguably their most two difficualt matches will come first, with their opener coming against hosts Taeshan in the Ice Palace, before they head to Elejamie for their second match of the group. Two wins there could be the start they were looking for, as they hold a crucial lead over their nearest rivals before making the trips over to the lesser known nations. Dini would be wise not to count out those other nations, as that is what wiped out their qualification chances last time round. Only time will tell whether Mercedini have learnt from their past mistakes, and put together a run good enough to see them back into the semifinals and potentially further. We have been on the tip of a tournament win before, but Dini would have to deliver some great performances if they are to come away with the ultimate prize in this edition. MD1 is approaching, Shebchetsik await Taeshan, with both nation looking for the perfect start against their closest rivals.

Transvolcanic's Hockey Squad
The Transvolcanic Federation is a newcomer to hockey, and doesn't have an official league, there are no records of having even played a hockey friendly match, or having quality arenas for Hockey matches, as the best are ubicated in commercial centers, only a few aren't:

-VIC Hockey Arena (Volkansfort, capacity: 3,500):
•hosting matches against TJUN-ia, Savojarna

-Loźkdańz-Kolpą Arena (Lozkdańz, capacity: 1,200):
•hosting match against- Recuecn

-Centro Comercial Jacinto Tavares (Volkansfort, capacity: 600):
•hosting match against - Sylestone

-Plazza Italiana (Bela Nova, capacity: 400):
•hosting match against - Tjoln

So could this be an opportunity to see if the nation is good at hockey? Maybe this team can be a "dark horse"

This is a team consisting of players from around Ranoria, most being about average to slightly above average, with a couple standouts offensively in Augustin Kahn and Richart Matthens. With ten all star nods and two MVP awards between them, they are both savvy veterans with enough athleticism left in the tank to burn an unsuspecting defender.

Puck Watch: Hockey Sneaks Up On TJUN-ia Again!

Name: TJUN-ia
Trigram: TJU
Governing Body: Ice Hockey TJUN-ia (IHT/IH-TJUN-ia)
Nickname: Ice Jaguars/Jaguars
Colours: Home - Blue/Orange, Away - White/Blue, Third - Black/Dark Orange

Once again, Ice Hockey sneaks up on the TJUN-ian conscious. Yes, it's another World Cup of Hockey and this time the hosts are 23rd ranked Taeshan. The Ice Jaguars are similarly ranked at 25th, looking to make it 3rd times the charm when it comes to making the playoffs. Hockey has fallen a bit behind the other Amerikan sports when it comes to success: the gridiron team are making waves without making the playoffs and both the basketball and baseball programs have made it to the knockouts in recent times. But hockey has just been...there to many a TJUN-ian and that must change if the sport is to succeed in the International Community.

ARENA
Name: The Rink in The Gardens
Location: New Washington, NAU Zone
Capacity: 7,500
Image
You'd think that The Gardens of New Washington would demand a bigger venue for their ice hockey arena, but they wanted to pay tribute to the Secretary-General here. His hometown in U1 has a small rink of similar capacity, so developers decided to build The Rink to have a similar feel. While it may be small, the fans make it sound like there are a lot more people in there - NAU ice hockey fans are known for being loud and boisterous when required.
