(OOC note for host: My roster has been updated to replace the previous provisional one.)
Baseball Liventia re-tools roster with team on course to return to playoffs
PORT CARTFORT— Despite holding an 11–4 record mid-way through the preliminary stage of the 50th World Baseball Classic, Baseball Liventia has announced sweeping changes to its roster, including moving from a five-man to a four-man rotation for the last 15 games of the group stage.

Liventia had entered the 50th Classic with the same 25-man team that failed to qualify for the final stages of the 49th Classic, a result which ended a six-tournament playoff appearance streak.

While Dermot Rowntree's team have turned their fortunes around from that doomed campaign, dropping only four games of their first 15 and sitting pretty atop Group 13, Baseball Liventia were keen not to foster any complacency and have called up a number of new – and some old – faces.

Pitchers Eddie Polkinghorne, Steve Rishworth, Damien Marley, Oscar Mabty, and Hamish Ainsley, and centre fielder Roy Christie, all make their first WBC teams, while infielders Edward Mull, David Stelfox, and Reece Raymont, and left fielder Kane Catlow, all receive recalls to the team.

For Catlow and veteran national team catcher Oscar Gauntlett, this will be the final WBC due to Baseball Liventia's selection policy of not calling up position players older than 32.

The ball. The focal element of a myriad of sports, foot, basket, hand, raquet, base, korf and even unmentioned in its discipline, tennis, table tennis, squash, cricket. Sometimes actually ball shaped, i.e. round, sometimes egg-like, even though looking at the pointy ends chicken would likely denounce it as not egg-like.

Many are filled with air, some are solid and (almost) as hard as rock. Case in point: The baseball. A misleading nomer to begin with as it is definitely not made of bases, it is the subject of much abuse. Not to the point of squash or tennis, where it is constantly beaten with rackets, but while the impacts are far less, they are some of the most violent one could ever find in any of the sports, other than maybe golf.

There had been talks of some softballs trying to set up a union, but these plans seem to have gone by the wayside, there were rumours that the driving force behind this movement was abducted from his site of work in Banija and was never heard of again.

Now there is a new development that might disrupt the sport of baseball forever, with the two sides bitter enemies. The lawyer for the baseballs is demanding better health coverage for balls injured during play and are especially looking for a strict concussion protocol, while the side of the bats is refusing to enter any negotiations as in their opinion the balls willingly enter the games, knowing the risks.

The balls are now threatening to walk, uh, roll out and put the rest of the WBC into jeopardy, while the bat side remains stone-faced. Well, wood-faced. Independent observers do not see any softening of the two fronts at this moment, making it seem as if the sport is caught between a ball and a hard place during its maybe most important tournament ever. Will the two sides be able to see eye to, uh, stitch to-- get on the same page before it is too late?

Only time will tell and even that is running out. Let us all hope that the sport and with this the tournament can be saved!

God shave the queen!

Running Up That Hill

PART 10 (1/2) (38 and 1/2) - Just Like A River Does

Now we’re back to the present time, as Asher Lundrigan found himself in an interesting place. He was somewhat stung and stupefied over what he had just heard from Eileen, and that had made him think a bit more about how the past and present met with one another, especially in the middle of an underground venue in Lac-Drouin.

Now, not only was he looking for a possible answer to the question, but possibly a better set of mental excuses to invest himself into the remainder of the Sicoutian leg of the schedule. In that, there had been no other way Asher could have described in wanting to get out- especially given his particular hesitation to be forward to be forward to Eileen about certain things- and staying more than necessary for a number of days or even hours in Sicoutimont was going to affect him either way.

Blimey, blimey, blimey, blimey, blimey, calisse…That’s what Asher thought to himself, as he slowly washed his hands on the counter of a washroom. Having excused himself in middle of a 10-minute interlude, Asher decided to take advantage of the much-needed break. He straightened his side hair twice, blinked thrice and then rubbed his hand with soap four times.

Now, looking at his face once more, he was slowly, pensievly staring at his own face on the mirror, and right next to him stood an older, bearded man in a black, well-smoothened suit. Another etranger, probably of different reasons he came, thought Asher. His compatriot turned his head at him once, and then returned his gaze to the mirror while washing his hands. The turquoise Neon lights of the washroom barely functioned, dimming the older man’s face like a New Romantic’s Poker hands, a grease-less face with grey, fading eyes. On his collars a yellow Orchid badge is placed, indicating his membership in the far-left Parti Justice du Quebec (PJQ).

‘Sad to see how the stories can sometimes end, isn’t it?’ said Arsene, ‘But then miracles do exist when you least look for it, after years of just waiting around and planning things like a diligent man would.’

‘Always.’ Asher raised his eyebrows, as the comment had the younger man realise the acquaintance’s identity. Being part of the Bron-Yr-Aur Barony, a fairly well-known name in its own right, and also coming from the PJQ ranks, he somewhat remembered the politician, who was just breaking into federal politics as a 26-year old postgraduate from St. Croix. But his father, for most part, kept his political life out of his personal chapters. Even during campaign seasons, he had rarely met politicians who, given his background in the Foreign Affairs ministry, called Lundrigan Sr an amicable nickname ‘Monsieur le Cosmopolitain’. And when he grew older, naturally he stayed out of political life, preferring to spend time wandering around on collegial grounds of St. Alban’s College, St. Croix. He knew that at some point, he would have to meet politicians. But to meet the young, charismatic leader of 82-seat PJQ in a washroom, of an illegally-operated live venue, that’s still a pretty rare occurrence if anything. ‘And I know I’ve always been lucky. Like a golden leprechaun of the enemy school, if you know what I’m talking about.’

‘Of course I do,’ remarked Arsene-Pierre Kim. ‘Every Quebecois child is taught to be grateful, but always to be prepared for the best in the worst. I think that many years later, and also from you two, that it indeed makes sense.’

Did he really overhear that conversation? If so, there’s a serious problem with watching my tongue, because those people want my head, not hers…. Asher turned his head around, giving him a particularly odd look. ‘I am delighted that I was able to catch your attention, however critical she or I may have been over gossip. If anything, that’s what the journalists and the musicians are best at…’

‘Oh really?’ said Arsene-Pierre, not really amused by the response he got from a prospective recruit. ‘Well, it depends on who you ask, but I don’t think you are really one at heart. You know, the so-called journalists would sell their souls at a cheaper rate, and call frivolous words of social justice without understanding the world, and then promptly find themselves embarrassed when their lack of depth is exposed...’’

Of course he’d say that. Asher knew well of the party leader’s hostility towards Quebecois and foreign journalists who, believe it or not, had a tendency to misquote his metaphoric quotes and strand-filled references.

Trying to deflect the subject, Asher took out his handkerchief and slowly doused water over it. ‘Aren’t you tired, especially with the possibility of a snap election?’ asked Asher, casually bringing up the topic of the Federal election.

‘Not a bit.’ Arsene-Pierre shrugged, firstly without an emotion, and then secondly with some certainty. ‘My late father, lord bless his soul, once told me that he was always scared of losing those he loved. But he knew the best not to be over the top about it, preferring to save the city by making the gamble and fighting the duel that many, in the postwar age, had refused to do so. He chose to be the cool guy, so you could say, without really being forward.

‘Of course, he knew everything had its trade-offs, but he had well understood the cost and lived with it. Of course, that’s what maybe enabled us to change the world, for the better and the worse. You know what happened with the rest right?’

”The Great Supreme Leader paid a visit to the Edmundston Mine today, and spoke with several of the workers, who showed Chairman Alphonse Pomeroy some of their equipment, as well as providing him with a tour of the mine. The Chairman was joined by various officials from the State Defence Committee, including Frank Landry, of the Ministry of Natural Resources, as well as other party officials including Patrick Courbet, Vincent Lajoie, Joseph Pomeroy and Alexis Cote. Le Meneur provided guidance to the miners, and encouraged them to continue working as hard as ever in the Year of Rapid Production for the Advancement of Sicoutimont. The miners expressed emotional thanks to the Supreme Leader for his visit. Long live Sicoutimont, long live Alphonse Pomeroy!”

The television turned to images of the miners working and construction taking place on the site in Edmunston, while patriotic music played in the background. Taking it all in were Ignace Tremaux, Jacques Tremaux and former Sicoutimont national baseball team pitcher Fernand Dantes.

“Things sure have changed from the old days, haven’t they, Fernand,” said Jacques.

The former pitcher gave a wistful smile as he held his cup of coffee in hand. Dantes knew, however, from his years of working for the Party, to keep his mouth shut, so he left that smile as his only reply. Jacques put an arm around him, and turned to Ignace.

“Ignace, did you know that this guy pitched shutout innings in game 5 of the World Baseball Classic final to keep us alive? Everyone thought we were down and out, but then Fernand here shut things down.”

“Everyone except Xavi Esquinardes,” laughed Dantes.

Jacques laughed as well. “I remember interviewing him before that game, and just not believing what he was saying. I saw him a few years later and said man, you really helped launch my career!” Jacques laughed, but suddenly paused. “Is it true what they say about him?”

Dantes looked around the room before he spoke, almost as if searching for a hidden camera or something. “You know Xavi, he’d say whatever was on his mind… that doesn’t go well with our new Sicoutian values, of course. Victor Santana told me a few years back he heard Xavi got out maybe 3 years after the Revolution, and was living abroad.”

“So he did make it then. There were rumours he was one of the 2,347 in the Orleans Incident.”

“Oh, no - he was gone before then.”

“Glad to know. Happier times, though! Ignace, do you have any questions for Fernand?”

Ignace smiled and nodded. “Sir, you worked at the Party Department of Sport, right?”

Fernand nodded. “Yep. I was actually the one who convinced them to put our old games on television. They wanted everything to be censored, but I said look, sometimes the people just want to watch a baseball game. So you can thank me for that.”

Ignace smiled. “Well, you might be interested to know why we’ve called you then! SCTV wants to re-air all the games, with some added commentary and interviews with some of the players of the team. Would you be interested in something like that?”

Fernand paused for a second, before replying. “This is with SCTV? They have to be the most annoying people to work with in the government. Let me guess, they’ve already written all the questions.”

“No, no,” said Ignace. “It’s actually Jacques who will be doing some of the commentary and interviewing, and I’ll be helping oversee the production.”

Fernand thought again, before answering. “I don’t know. I’m happy to answer any questions you have, but I’m not going to go out there and be a propaganda mouthpiece.”

Jacques looked at his old friend, before speaking up. “Fernand, it’s about passing on what you guys achieved to the next generation. This might be the last chance ever for some of the guys from the team to get back together and talk about those days. To tell your story. Because if you don’t tell it, then someone in a back room in Lac-Drouin is going to tell it, and then you’ll really be a propaganda mouthpiece. There’s 7 of you gone already, as well as Sorotane.”

Fernand looked at Jacques, a little mist in his eyes now. Then he turned to Ignace. “You know what, I’ll do it. For all the guys who can’t anymore. Who else is in?”

“Well, we were hoping you might be able to help a bit with that,” said Jacques. “Do you still talk to the guys?”

“Absolutely, we meet up every few years, and whenever I know I’ll be somewhere someone’s living, I’ll pop in.”

“Perfect. I’ve got a few phone numbers here, if you could help me verify and then we can make some calls.”

“Those numbers are right, I think. You really think Carlos is going to do this?”

“It’s worth a try, eh. I know he had some trouble, but that had to be twenty years ago now. Isn’t he living in San Cristobal?”

“Yep, coaching a kid’s league out there I think.”

Throughout the afternoon, phone calls were made. Loic St-Ignace was happy to hear from Jacques, and ‘of course’ he was in, he had to be in Lac-Drouin in a few weeks anyways. Alfonso Soriano and Fernand Dantes talked for nearly two hours on the phone, catching up on old times, and Soriano was enthusiastic as well. Boullion Carvier was in, as long as he could get tickets to ‘a game or two’ of the upcoming WBC 50. Carlos Santa Maria took the most convincing from Fernand Dantes, but despite his reservations, he too agreed. Each of the ex-players would stay in touch and also go back and collect some of their own thoughts about that time. Finally, after dinner, Fernand stood up to leave.

“Thank you, Marie and Jacques, for the dinner. It was nice to meet you as well, Ignace. I’m looking forward to this, now. I’ve got some old diaries and stuff back home - I’ll have to take a look.”

“Maybe you should write a book,” said Jacques.

“Maybe I should,” Dantes replied. “Claude Perrault hated writing his book, Alfonso Soriano loved writing. I feel I’d probably be more like Claude,” he said with a laugh. “But you never know, do you.”

And with that, the ace closer slunk off into the darkness of the night. It was getting late - time for Ignace to be heading home as well.

“Well, Uncle Jacques, Aunt Marie, it was lovely to visit. I might come up next weekend as well, not sure yet.”

“Leaving so soon?” said Marie.

“Aunt Marie, I have to work at 8 in the morning.”

“I suppose you are a big-shot, after all,” she said, with a smile. Jacques smiled too. “It was good to see you, young man. This has been a long, exciting day - I think I need to get some sleep. I haven’t interviewed these guys in years - I’ve got some reading to do.”

And so, Ignace entered the night too, walking back towards the train station. It was an eerie night, with most streetlamps dark so as to conserve energy. The only light was that from the moon, and, of course, the smiling portrait of Alphonse Pomeroy on top of the train station. Soon enough, however, his train pulled out towards Lac-Drouin, and the lights of a city still very much alive came into view.

Player of the Game Profiles posted on TalkBaseball.qd website.

    Game 16: Xannerian starting pitcher

8 hits produced 2 runs for the things, to 5 from 5 from Xanneria. The difference came from Xanneria’s starter maintaining good control with a high percentage of pitches in the strike zone. They struck out 7 and walked only 2. By contrast Mayumi Kawakami’s knuckleball wasn’t quite landing right. She took 34 pitches to get through a difficult first inning, just half of them strikes. Once Xanneria got runners on base they were able to move them along. The same thing happened in the 5th, and her day was done. By contrast the Things’ scattered singles produced no real run expectancy as Xanneria’s starter regularly got a strikeout in each inning to prevent any forward momentum. It was an instructive day on the value of the strikeout and showed why the Things’ rather overhyped gender-non-specific-bovine-pen has been struggling.

    Game 17: Jason Higgsby

It’s no secret the Things’ lineup struggles against lefties, with Matsuoka and Steinnsson, meant to be the two power hitters, having to be left out of the lineup. But that shouldn’t take away from another excellent showing from Higgbys, who’s become something of a pain in the butt for the Quodites. He was clinical against the right handed hitters too. This time it wasn’t so much a case of throwing lots of strikeouts, and he gave up some hits. But the Things were never able to get good contact against his breaking stuff, and Kayley Symonds running out weak groundballs to first was never going to be enough to make up for the offensive explosion at the other end as Moyamoto, Vali and Ingalls all homered off Kaito Nakajima. Amonde’s 2-RBI single killed off any further chance of a comeback.

    Game 18: Zhong Tang

Games with openers produce strange box scores. Ordinarily shutting out a team on 5 hits would be enough to have any starter declared player of the game, but with Fujioka only throwing 3 innings – 3 good innings all the same – we instead plumped for reliever Zhong Tang. Not used as much as he’d be liked during this Classic, partly because of the high number of left handed starting pitchers for the Things, he’s had to adapt to playing second fiddle to Huan Yeung. Used here as something between a set-up man and a long reliever, he shrugged off such labels and just concentrating on throwing strikes. He blitzed through his two innings of work. Out of 33 pitches, just 1 registered good contact. The Quodite offence struggled, too, but with Tang throwing fire, any lead was going to be enough.

The Drury Depot in Forbridge was a sleek, well-maintained building. Most of the train stations they'd passed through had been, which made sense. Still, Alfred couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.

"I told you!" Buck hissed. "The government probably has spies or someone following us around. Keeping track of who we meet."

"No, no," said Alfred, "not that kind of paranoia. Just...a haunted feeling. Like there are ghosts from the past watching. Like someone's been here before."

"Don't be superstitious," said a tall woman in an unfamiliar accent, pacing by. "Of course someone's probably been here before, this is a highly-populous country with a long history. Statistically, it would be stranger if nobody had been here before."

"Okay, but," Alfred patiently began, but she was already hustling towards the local trains.

Unlike Spenson, the FTC, and Kerlagrad, Forbridge didn't have any top-level baseball teams. Unlike Guariday, it didn't even have any top-level football teams either. Still, they'd been told it was a good place to go if you cared about the distant past and the future of Zwangzug sports. The local university was enjoying a renaissance, with the football Sparks having reached the final of the recent November Nincompoopery; the Nepharim goalkeeper Barry Theodore was both literally and figuratively a big man on campus. They didn't expect to meet him, but who knew? Maybe his fans were as chatty as Molly and Ana from StoalSci.

Instead, by the time they got to the campus tours office, they found themselves waiting in line behind the woman from the depot.

"Hello," she said politely. "I'm here to learn about the robots."

"There are quite a few," said the receptionist. "You'll have to be more specific."

"The hockey dudes."

"The what?"

"Like when the lake freezes over and you go out on the ice and thwap things around with sticks. That."

"Oh!" said the receptionist brightly. "You mean broomball."

"No," she said. "Hockey. With skates. Blades. Whatever the robotic equivalent of that is."

"We might be here a while," Alfred whispered. Buck shrugged. The local bureaucrats seemed more interested in deciphering what the woman meant than stalking him, so that was good news.

"Okay look," she went on, "let's try this again. What can you tell me about Plutoni?"

The receptionist typed at her keyboard. "I don't think we have any professors by that name, but if you contact the alumni association, they have a directory--"

"I want a directory of all the alumni who are not on this planet."

"Not on this planet?" The receptionist had the look of someone who was wishing she could grow a beard so she could stroke it thoughtfully. "That's gonna be a tricky one. Okay, I can put you in touch with the space agency back in Spenson, and they can tell you the launch schedules."

"The former nation of Plutoni."

"Hold on," said Alfred, reaching for his cell phone. Just because Buck didn't like modern technology, there was no reason he had to eschew it. "The one that was last contacted, uh, five years and three hundred thirty-three days ago?"

"Yes," she said thankfully. "Only six years? There has to be something."

"I'm Alfred Gasparin," he continued awkwardly, "this is Buck Fuchs."

"From the IBS!" She grinned. "Big fan. Um, I'm Guðrún Ólafíasdóttir, please just call me Guðrún, but do pronounce the ð, it's important. You would not believe how hard that was for the customs people."

"Oh, I think we would," Buck muttered darkly.

"Right," said Guðrún. "Okay. Plutoni. Libertarian robots. Surprisingly keen on ice hockey. Out beyond the orbit of Neptune, except when they cross paths with the orbit of Neptune. I know they speak your weird algebraic dialect and this place is crawling with robots. Don't you have any data?"

"Okay, it says here," Alfred said, "that the first Open Division champions were the Downtown Divers, back in the era preceding--"

"The transition to the modern sporting world, yes, I know," said Guðrún.

The receptionist, at this point, was unsuccessfully craning her neck to see if there was anyone else in line who had a more tractable query.

"Okay, look," said Guðrún. "Where were you 2^7 years ago? Let's start there."

"I hadn't been born yet," said the receptionist.

"Well, what was here in Forbridge, then?"

Now her neck really was craned awkwardly. "I don't think...the Depot came after the ZAO was demolished, that was around the time of...forty-three World Cups ago, but--"

"Why is everything about soccer," Guðrún asked rhetorically.

"I think they call it football here," Buck chirped up. Guðrún ignored him.

"If you're interested in libertarians..." the receptionist tentatively began.

An awkward silence. "Yes?" Alfred finally said.

"There's a chatbot down in the tech dome that refuses to connect to the network. We get the sense it doesn't really want to affiliate with the wider Zwangzug net or become a citizen. Maybe it's anti-statist. You could ask there?"

Guðrún was glaring as if she was no closer to getting the answers she wanted. But Alfred was curious. A robot yet to join wider society was sort of like a newborn baby. Sort of. "Sure."

"Right this way, then," she said. "Ms. Olafiasdottir?"

Guðrún, heaving a deep sigh, turned to follow.

The Kriegiersien presidents office. His secretary comes in. The president sighs.

“Do you have further five issues for me?”
“Yes Sir, of course. But first a report.”
“About what? Did some wizard kill an unbelievable evil?”
“Err.. yes Sir.”
“Oh, that was just a wild guess.”

“You may have heard from all the catastrophes happening in the Northwest?”
“This is a gargantuan nation. There are always disasters somewhere.”
“Yes, but this time it was a cover up from Wizards. They had some furious battles it seems.”
“Oi, against what?”
“Some evil god who wanted to destroy or conquer the world... it is a bit sketchy.”
“What is his name?”
“Something with A..”
“Amon?”
“No?”
“Alduin? The Absolute?”
“No, no.”
“Voldemort?”
“There is no A in it Sir. We don’t have many informations, but they won and the problem is solved.”
“That is fine, so we won’t hear from it again?”
“Probably not. That should be the last time we have to worry about this topic.”
“Good. Good. But nice from the wizards to let us know, with them being a secret society among us, thinking of us as second rate beings.”
“Actually we found out about it. One of our national team baseballplayers got somehow some hints about what was happening and our agents reported him to the wizards.”
“Oh. Who is it?”
“Phillip Weeks.”
“Doesn’t ring a bell.”
“He is not one of the Top Players. So they took care of him. But he is fine, just a bit of memory loss.”

“Aha. Great, so on to the important things. How are the World Baseball Classics going?”
“We won the last matches, the play-offs are in range again.”
“Excellent. Did the players of my Timesteam do well?”
“Yes. If you want to see some of the statistics?”

The president looks blunt at the piece of paper shown to him.

“Leon Prince made 3 home runs.”
“That is what I want to hear. I told you it was a great idea to get him for the team.”
“Yes Sir, do you now want to see the issues?”
“Oh well. Let’s see... Oh please. Landowners against hikers again?”

Player in the focus: Timothy Salas

The Pitcher of the Presidents Club is famous for his tricky throws, even though his fastball isn’t the fastest. Some say that he licks the ball before the throw and changes the trajectory and flight characteristics thanks to how he chews his bubble gum before.
Timothy Salas repeatedly laughs this claims away: “I kiss the ball for good luck, that is allowed. And I am chewing BubbleGunGum, the best chewing gum in the world. It is just damned tasty and helps to relax. But if you think it also helps to change how a ball flies, suit yourself.”
Other argue that this is all a marketing trick.

Batter Up!: Short Summaries (Games 16-18)

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Nov 15, 2020 10:33 am

Game 16 - TJUN-ia (22) 7-5 Tha Great Pond (UR) (Clear Pond Field, Tha Great Pond)
TJUN-ian baseball was hoping for change after back-to-back defeats but with Chris Harris starting in Clear Pond Field against 2nd-placed Tha Great Pond, many were expecting the Ducks to produce more magic to prevail once again. But this game would turn out differently as the teams traded runs in the 2nd innings. Joe Gregory's 3-run bomb into the pond was a big moment in the 3rd, but Gerry Duck hit back with a homer of his own to make it 4-2. Another run for TJUN-ia made it 5-2 after 4, but those Ducks kept fighting with another run in the 5th. At 5-3, it was anyone's game but Pedro Moires had other ideas, slamming a ball into the pond of 2. 7-3 Jags but the Ducks got another too, so 7-4. The rest of the game saw Harris look great against the Ducks batting and he was allowed to finish the game by himself. He allowed another homer by Gerry Duck, but that wasn't enough for the Ducks to take the win from the Jaguars' maw. A big win that propelled the Battin' Jags back to 2nd.

Game 17 - TJUN-ia (22) 3-2 Rwekazaland (UR) (Unknown Location, Rwekazaland)
Davis Johnson was the starter in Rwekazaland, the only team in this group that used a DH at home. That meant more Killian O'Mally and like the first game here, he would have an impact on this rather dull game. After 2 outs and with 2 runners on base on the 1st, O'Mally sent the ball packing out of the park and just like that, it was 3-0 Jags. Things were looking good until the 2nd when the home team scored a run to make it 3-1. It was made 3-2 in the 3rd, Floyd Justice's home run making it a 1-score game, but Johnson was allowed to remain in the mound and he would not allow another run for the rest of the game. No one knows quite what happened after the 3rd inning, but batting on both teams went dry with the pitching doing all the talking. Phillip Hellas-Verona and his counterpart Maxwell Rodgers mustn't have known what was causing this drought but for TJUN-ia's sake, it was enough for the W. TJUN-ia had responded to 2 loses with 2 road wins and were pulling away from the 3rd-place battle.

Game 18 - Ranoria (31) 3-5 TJUN-ia (22) (Rounders Field, Portside)
Then Ranoria came to town. Gene Almac would start against the Krauts in a game that would be decided at the beginning and at the end. In the beginning, Ranoria scored first in the first but TJUN-ia would take the lead away immediately with a 2-run bomb by Ki Yung-son. The game would remain this way, both Almac and Parker Majors performing well under the pressure, until the 5th when TJUN-ia got another. At 3-1, some might say the game was over but the end provided more drama. In the end, Nicholas Lux sent a 2-run bomb out of the park and suddenly this game was tied at 3-3. Almac was tactically brought off for closer Carlos Buena and he did his job brilliantly for the rest of the game. TJUN-ia would get the final say in this contest in the 8th, Steven Fulmer's 2-run bomb sending momentum back TJUN-ia's way. The Battin' Jags held on and now they look great. They responded to back-to-back loses with 3 wins on the bounce and are now 3 games ahead of the Krauts in the race for top 2. But TJUN-ia's next opponents, The Greater Nordics, are also on a 3-game win streak. In the battle between the top 2, one streak must end in Copenhagen...

Krauts Slip to 9-9, Fall to TJUN-ia in Must-Win Contest and Slip Up Against Sangti

Image
With high hopes coming in, the Krauts are fighting tooth and nail just to tread water, much less make the post season

Bright spot: We beat Tha Great Pond 12-0, finally putting an end to the cycle of bad blood against that team. Not so bright - we lost to Sangti, an absolute disaster that should have been a 'gimme' kind of a win, and then failed to secure a win against TJUN-ia. The latter was, while more anticipated, also a more devastating blow as it was an opportunity for our Krauts to begin closing the gap against the rising juggernaut of a baseball team. Despite a two run homer from Nicholas Lux that would at least make it a game in the fifth inning, the team was eventually crushed, failing to score again as the battin' Jags ran it up with another two runs later on.

At this point, our Krauts are out of the race for the top two spots in the group. With just twelve games left to play, it would take a miracle to catch up to TJUN-ia's currently 12-6 team, or the Greater Nordics, sitting at 13-5.

Oh, and better yet, Ranoria is behind 7 teams in the race for a wild card slot, and tied with another six, with a 9-9 record. So either way that this goes, we have to do better. Harrison's guarantee is out of the picture now, the team would need to go 11-1 to pull it off, completely unrealistic given their current state. So, who's next? Does Ranoria at least have a chance to make a run?

Maybe. We'll be starting off with a trip to Rwekazaland before hosting The Greater Nordics and Sangti. The first and last of those three contests should be a win, as Rwekazaland is sitting at 7 wins, and Sangti 4, but the latter has upset the Krauts before, obviously, and Rwekazaland is technically only two wins behind out struggling squad.

And the match against The Greater Nordics, that's the tough one. While a win would at least extend our hopes of getting into the knock out stages via group 7's seeding, it certainly wouldn't make our chances any brighter, as the Nordics would still need to practically collapse to be overtaken by the Krauts at this point.

So, with perhaps a little more pessimism than the usual. . . go Krauts.

I go by Ran. Unless, of course, you want to type out Ranoria. That's your decision.

Three matches closer to the end of the group stage in the Golden Edition of the World Baseball Classic puts the Sarzonian national baseball team in an enviable position.

Through 18 matches out of 30, the Stars have accumulated a 15-3 record, level with Group 6 leaders Nova Anglicana for second best in the entire 78-team field. The Stars have a five-game lead on Valanora for the Group 2 title, a margin exceeded by 17-1 Newmanistan, which is eight games clear of Falisiand and Equestria in Group 11 and Nova Anglicana's seven-game lead over three different teams. The Stars' plus-42 run differential would give them the second overall seed if the group stage ended now.

Manager Geoff Yancey said he wanted his team "to continue to do the little things right" when asked what his goals were for the rest of the group stage.

"We've been fundamentally sound, pitching well throughout the rotation and the bullpen, playing strong defence and getting timely hitting," he said. "Would I like to score more runs? I'm a hitting coach at heart, so absolutely, but I like what we've been doing in the other important aspects of the game."

That includes a team that hits behind the runner and willingly sacrifices outs to move runners into scoring position. It includes seeing designated hitter Luke Brinkley begin batting practice with bunts. It includes Brinkley working on improving his fielding at first base and first baseman Cody Frazier taking fly balls in left and right field during training.

"We've really cultivated a team first philosophy here," shortstop Christine Andersen said. "Brinkley could go 0-for-4 with four Ks and he'd be the first out of the dugout celebrating a win," she said. Second baseman Ian Danielson added that after a rare loss, Frazier was dejected in front of his locker despite going 4-for-four with five RBI.

"Stats don't mean anything to us," Danielson said. "The only stat we care about is wins and losses."

Yancey dismissed talk that he's already begun planning for the knockout rounds, saying there was still a lot of work left before the Stars could consider life after the group stage, but a source familiar with Yancey said he was already making decisions about the rotation for the knockouts.

"He's been telling the team to not get too far ahead of itself, but he's also making sure he's isn't caught flat-footed," said a team source who spoke on condition of anonymity to be able to speak candidly about Yancey's thought process. "He's going to be as well prepared as he can."

Part 1
Part 2

Can someone just get my out of my misery? I've been buried here for - I'm not sure how long, I can't see anything. Oh, it was all so nice, that dog that found me in the bushes in Banija, I was his favourite toy, he'd carry me around, his master would throw me and he would get me back. Aaaah, those were the days. Sure, his teeth still hurt and his slobber...well, after a while you just give up and give in. But he played with me all the time. Am I still in Banija? I don't think so, because everything went dark and I think we flew somewhere, so I have no idea at all where I am.

But how did I end up here, in this hole? Well, they were redoing the deck, they said. They dug holes and all and my stupid dog had the brilliant idea of digging his own hole and dumping me into it. I'm a softball, I do not grow in dirt, helloooo? I'm not sure what on earth he was thinking, well, coming to think of it, he probably wasn't. If it would have just been a game of hide and go seek where he would bury me, then search for me, dig me up and then we're all best friends again sure, but I guess he did the hide part, but forgot the seek. So now I've been stuck here. And let me tell you, it is gross. Absolutely gross! Not only is it muddy and dirty, no, there are bugs and worms and ugh *shudders*

Oh, I can hear them talk up there, even his master asking him where his ball was. You know what he said? "Woof!" Can you imagine the gall to say that? To his master? About me? And I called him - what exactly did I call him? Who cares? He betrayed me! He deserted me! I almost wish I was back in that Banijan bush.

What's that? A lot of people talking there. Something about resodding. What is resodding? I heard people say to umpires to sod off, but this doesn't make any sense. Whoa! T-the wh-wh-ole g-g-g-rrround-d-d is-s-s sh-sh-shak-k-king-g-g. AN EARTHQUAKE! Wait, it's over? That was short. I never- OW! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? YOU STABBED ME!

Wait, I see light! Am I dead? Should I go towards the light? No, I still hurt, so I'm definitely not dead. A shovel! It is a shovel! They are finally digging me up! Whoooo, I am going to be back with my-- wait a minute, this is not my dog, this is a - a - huge machine! Where are you putting me? Aaaaaaaah! *thud*

Thank you very much, now I'm in the back of a dump truck? Really? Now what- *thud* Oh thank you very much! Bury me again! I give up. I'll just lay here and die. Not that I really have much of a choice to do anything else...

Ah, we are moving. Where could a dump truck like this go? Hm. Oh no, no, no, no, dump truck, great. From being the star of the Olympics to stuck in a bush to being a slobbery dog's chew toy to being stuck in dirt and now going into the garbage. What a career. They didn't tell us that when we signed up for this. Yes, I know, I can't sign squat because I don't have hands, ok? No need to point it out, I'm miserable enough!

Hapilopper Airlines Flight 50, 40,000 feet in the air between West Phoenicia and Hapilopper
The morning after World Baseball Classic 50 Game 18: Hapilopper 7-1 West Phoenicia
Dale Moss was looking through some documents related to the last three games for the Hapilopper National Baseball Team, and wondered if there was something, anything, that he could ask for the team to improve on. But there was nothing he could think of at that point. The team was on a six-game winning streak, and those last three games, against Sicoutimont, The Fortem and West Phoenicia, might have been the three best games that the Hapilopper National Baseball Team had ever played. Maybe the best games ever played by a Hapiloppian team in international competition.

Since returning from his six-game suspension, Dale wanted his team to play like hell to prove a point to the rest of the multiverse. And in those last three games, the Haps most definitely played like hell.

If it wasn’t a towering home run from Jerome Hayden, it was Grant Bonney knocking a catcher into next week. If it wasn’t a wild double steal from Levi Berry and Dayton Rowe, it was Marion Pound legging out a triple. Or maybe it was Hot Sauce Gibbs hammering a base hit over the head of a Sicoutimont infielder and making extra bases out of it. Or maybe it was Vic Foster throwing eight scoreless innings of five-hit ball against the Fortem, before giving up one run in the top of the 9th, long after the outcome of the game had been decided. Or how about Cole Winthrop pitching himself out of a jam in the third game, giving up one run in the bottom of the first, but getting out of a bases-loaded situation with a crucial strikeout.

As a result of this top-shelf play from the Haps, the team had won three more games, and in these three, they didn’t just win, they ran away with all three of them. The Hap Thrashers beat Sicoutimont 10-2. Then they traveled back to Capital Stadium and laid waste to the Fortem, 11-1. Then they traveled to West Phoenicia and stomped them, 7-1. Dale was still looking at some of his documents, and smiled. The Hapilopper National Baseball Team had truly become a cohesive unit, and now had a whopping 12-point lead, or four whole wins, over second-place West Phoenicia, with 12 games left to play.

With the plane firmly in cruising altitude, it was safe for Dale to step out of his first-class seat to check on his players, all of whom were populating the business class section of the plane. When he went out, he found all of the players joking and cutting up with each other. There were no cliques as he had seen in some locker rooms. There was no hard feelings, as had been seen with some players as recently as the year before. The whole team was over the moon with their play, and felt they could beat anyone.

“AND WE MEAN, ANYONE!” shouted Jerome Hayden, probably on his third or fourth cocktail of the flight. “Tell me, skip, those last three games, did anything stand out to you that we need to work on?”

The whole team looked back at Dale, who had a funny look on his face, the result of having been put on the spot all of a sudden.

“Uh…”

“You told us a few hours ago that you’d tell us,” Jerome said. “So tell me, skip, is there anything?”

“Uh… maybe smile a little more?” Dale struggled to say.

“Yeah, I’ll smile a little more, and I’ll do it for you,” Jerome cracked.

Other players laughed. It was a sign that the Hapilopper National Baseball Team was in a fantastic position as they prepared for their last 12 games. The team and its players were enormously confident as they traveled back home.

And back home, the fans in Hapilopper were responding in kind. Tickets for the next HNBT home game sold out the day after the last one ended, when they went on sale. Many fans would travel from places like Pinkerton, Garvinson, Border City and Jonesboro just to camp out in front of the ticket office. Others would leave their seats and rush towards the ticket office upon the final out. The most recent game, against the Fortem, might have been among the loudest games in the old concrete donut. Fans whooped and screamed for every Thrasher hit, every Thrasher run and every time Vic Foster, with his sweet spitball, registered a strikeout – and there were 13 of them in that game.

Nolan Jefferson would be starting the next game, against that team from Bardney, that throwback to the 1800s. Nolan was trying about as hard as he could to go through notes taken from the last time the Haps went up against Bardney, but it was hard to with the rambunctious atmosphere on the plane. He knew that the game, most likely, was going to be one hell of a battle. He also knew Jerome was planning on doing something against the Bardneyians that could lead to an ugly incident, so he intended on meeting with his teammate the next morning to see what he had planned.

But for right now, all was well with the Hapiloppians.

Groundball Day, Part 6

Postby Drawkland » Sun Nov 15, 2020 4:58 pm

Groundball Day

beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ...

"Are you FUCKING KIDDING ME?" Tori screamed when she just realized what had happened. She rolled over and started yelling into her pillow, squeezing it tightly.

Travis rolled around, equally indignant, muttering to himself. He finally shut off the phone, then rolled back over bed. Tori calmed down after a few seconds, sitting there in silence.

"There really isn't a way out ..." Travis whispered to the ceiling above him.

"I shouldn't have yelled like that." Tori apologized. "And now I'm getting stars in my eyes. Ugh."

"It's okay, sweetie. It's frustrating for me too."

"I just don't understand what we're supposed to do!" she exclaimed, throwing her pillow across the room. "Whatever stupid movie plot is happening right now, it sucks. There's nothing interesting to do. We've already explored all the things here in Canterlot before today. This is such a big city too, it's not like we can go and solve everyone's problems like that one movie. And there's no aliens attacking us either, so that's not it. We're literally stuck in this time loop for no reason!"

"We don't really have anything to do but go about our day. There's gotta be something in our normal day that is important. You know? Like why would God or the universe or whatever choose us in particular to be stuck in this hell? There has to be something we experience that we can change."

Tori sighed and got up out of bed. She started getting ready for the day, while Travis spent another few minutes in bed thinking. Was it the game? Was it something at the Mount Harmony park they visit earlier in the day? Some random person they pass on the street during the day? Maybe some place they visit after the game?

"I still think it's something about the game." Travis said. "We just need to go there and gather clues as to what to do. Maybe somebody sitting near us desperately needs help with something."

"And we'll do what, just sit here for a few hours?" Tori said with a good amount of annoyance in her voice. "We set this stupid alarm so early to make sure we have enough time to do stuff before the game, but now we're just going to want to skip right to the game. But we can't do that! We have to wake up at this stupid time and go through the whole day before getting the game."

"Do you have any alternatives?" Travis asked genuinely.

There was a tense silence, and Tori sighed. "I guess not. I'll try thinking of something though."

The couple eventually got to the game that night, after following a schedule similar to the one they had on the original day. Despite their best efforts to talk to some of the people around them, none of them seemed to be very keen on revealing many personal details.

"How did they even do this in the movies?" Tori lamented as they walked away from yet another awkward conversation with a fan a few rows from their seats.

"Well for one, the movies aren't real." Travis replied, giving Tori a playful nudge. He received a stuck out tongue in response.

"I think tonight is just gonna be a bust. I say we just sit in our seats and let the rest of this game play out."

"I suppose that can work!" Travis said cheerfully. He was trying his best to keep the mood chipper, but it was clear that Tori was going to be moping for the rest of the night.

And mope for the rest of the night she did.

beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ...

Another day went by, and the couple did virtually the same thing they did the previous day. This time they tried talking to someone in the lobby of the hotel while they were eating breakfast, but he seemed in a hurry and not willing to socialize.

"Are you sure this is even the right thing do do?" Tori sighed again, taking a sip of her now-lukewarm coffee.

"What else can we do? We're probably supposed to help people or make some sort of difference to the world, right? Or else why would we be stuck in this situation?"

"I'm not convinced." Tori said simply, turning to the TV. "Are we sure the game tonight is even relevant to this hell we're in?"

"I'm positive it is," Travis insisted, "it's the entire reason we're at this place in the first place. If it weren't for this Game 5 we'd be somewhere totally different right now, either back home or on our way to another city in the Equestrian States."

"Fine. Let's not go to the mountain park today, I'm not feeling it."

"Sure, that's cool with me."

Once again, a night passed with nothing new or notable to discuss. More failed conversations, investigations, and experimentations. Defeated, they headed back to the hotel and fell asleep.

beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ...

Another day passed by. They did their basic route of the day, this time deciding to poke around the park at Mt Harmony to try and find something interesting or crucial there. No such luck.

beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ...

Another day passed by. Tori was sick of going out, so they decided to stay in the hotel all day, ordering a pizza and watching the game on TV. It ended exactly the same as it had every time before. At least this time they got to hear the commentary for the game.

beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ...

Another day passed by. Tori was feeling better so they went out and did most of what they usually did during the day. Seeing the game from a new perspective last time was intriguing though, so they decided to stay in the hotel room for the game again. The broadcast was identical, of course.

"I just now realized how dumb this is!" Tori said midway through the eighth inning.

"How's that?" Travis asked, looking up from his tablet.

"The broadcast is going to be the exact same every time!"

"...yeah? I thought we knew that."

"Well what's the point of watching this then? At least if we're at the game we can move around and talk to different people or explore. Here we're just stuck watching the same thing with no way to switch things up."

"Let's just go to the game again tomorrow. Well, 'tomorrow', I guess."

"Okay."

beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ...

True to their word, the couple went to the game again the next night. It wasn't exceptionally different from any of the other times they went, despite walking around different parts of the stadium and getting a feel for the whole layout. Towards the end of the game, though, things took a turn for the worse.

Travis had noticed Tori hadn't talked in awhile. They were sitting in a different section, at the top of a nosebleed section on the third base side of the field. It was basically the opposite corner of the stadium from where their actual tickets in the right field grandstand were. Tori had suggested they try sitting up there for a change of scenery, but she'd been mostly quiet since.

"You're giving me a weird vibe right now. What's on your mind?" Travis said quietly to her.

"So we're stuck in this loop." Tori replied after a hesitation.

"Yyyeah ..." Travis said slowly. "We are."

"Nothing we do matters." she said deliberately. "We've spent hundreds of dollars in a day and none of it was gone in the morning. You made $50 in cash and it was out of your wallet the next morning. We've travelled through light years of space through a portal and ended up in our hotel beds in an instant."

"Where are you going with this?"

"There's no consequences to what we do."

"I guess not?" Travis was still really confused as to what she meant.

"So if there truly are no consequences, why should this matter?"

"Why should what matter-" Travis started to ask, when he noticed Tori had stood up from her seat. She turned around, looking at the fencing at the top of the section behind them. She started climbing on the seat, trying to get up to that top level.

"Woah woah woah! Tori! What the hell are you doing?" Travis shouted, accidentally catching the attention of some nearby fans in the section. She didn't stop, and started to climb on the actual fence itself. There was nothing on the other side but a hundred or so foot drop.

"Tori!" Travis started to climb after her, trying to pull her down, but she had just clambered on to the other side of the fence, standing on the tiny ledge and hanging her arms around the back of the fence. She stared down at the concourse below her as Travis frantically came after her.

"Don't do this! Tori, oh my God, what is wrong with you!" His thoughts had turned off entirely as he zero'd in on trying to hold on to his girlfriend. "Tori, Tori, come on, this is insane, just get back over here, I'll hold on, I got you here. Come on."

Tori turned her head around to look back at Travis, who was now leaning over the edge of the fence to get in a good position to pull her back. By now, a considerable amount of people in the nearby sections had turned to watch the scene unfolding.

"Tori," Travis pleaded, "Please get back over here. We'll figure something out."

"Okay." she breathed, and slowly flipped around to grab ahold of Travis. He breathed a sigh of relief and held on to her tightly. Tori started pulling at him to get closer, holding her arms around his head.

With no warning, she suddenly leapt from the edge. Travis, with his arms entangled with Tori's, couldn't get free in time, and was pulled over the edge of the fence with her. Entwined in each other's arms, the couple plummeted to the asphalt below.

WBC 50: Emergency Meeting
By Nakamura Go (@GomuraOfficial)

-- After three tough games for our Daskies, and losing two games out of three, An Takashi called the team in a emergency issue. The head coach told the press that the formation will change to one similar to the one used in games 13, 14 and 15.

"We will now discuss about the reasons of the change, but the team will revert to the last roster update. We believe Shibaike is our top option right now for the catcher position, as he give us stability and a proven confidence boost. Eidome will keep his position as our DH, as he greatly performed on his at-bats. It's on our best wishes to make sure Eidome develops efficiently and safely in the catcher position. Until then, Shibaike will now be our official starter, unless announced otherwise"

"Now, about our team's evident lack of batting reliability, we'll put Rokutani back in the roster, as he were a big part in our team's past victories. This time, Rokutani will take Ben's place as our 2B, where we believe he will thrive. Both these changes are towards a more aggressive approach to the game, something new for us as we play the usual daskelian baseball. Do not fret; We're not abandoning our ways, and Sakamoto here is one of the most classic Daskelian baseball-minded head coaches I've ever met. We hope this decision will be the best for the team. Please, cheer for us in the next triad of matches" Said An, finishing with a deep bow to the press present.

The Daskies are still in the third place, with a 9-9 tie between win and loses and a zero run differential. The next teams in the table are just 3 wins from our position, so Daskel still needs to secure a better place into the standings. Until then, for the victory! Keep cheering for your local Daskies!

THE WBC50 25
An LBC-LSN Collaboration

#26: Tanya Ericsson, LF
Mason Saucedo, LCCSN

Signature Moment: "Duvall comes back with a fastball - hit hiiiigh into left-center, Bates goes back, and that one is OUT OF HERE! Tanya Ericsson has tied Game Five! A rare mistake from Courtney Duvall has given the Tigers new life in this game!" -WBC40 Semifinals Game 5, Cassadaigua

There's an unfortunate tendency of the sports media to portray Tigers history as two dominant runs (WBC28-31 and WBC40-42) filled in with years of mediocrity. The glory years of four and three consecutive finals appearances end up glamorized; the rest rarely spoken of. As a result, I don't think Tanya Ericsson, who debuted at WBC35 and played in six Classics - gets enough attention for her early superstardom, compared to her twilight years as role player.

It's why the omission of Lucien Russo, who will be this all-time team's fourth outfielder, for Ericsson has been the most controversial of our picks. Although many fans remember Ericsson just for her game-tying pinch-hit home run against Newmanistan, Ericsson was a legitimate superstar whose teams just weren't good enough to get over the hump until too late, but in reality, the numbers support Ericsson over Russo. Although she was a bit of a free-swinger when she made her debut in WBC35, she had five legitimate tools that showed up that WBC - and although the team lost to The Great Pond in Ro16, Ericsson won positive notes for fighting until the very end.

While her limited defensive capabilities forced a move from center-field to left-field, while the more fleet-footed Gudjon Frandsen emerged as a starter, Ericsson remained one of the most reliable bats in the Tigers' lineup in those "in-between years", culminating in a superstar WBC37 performance where she carried her team to the finals by batting over .350 in the playoffs. Alas, the Tigers fell in the final to Schiltzberg that year, and since the finals appearance is the only one of nine not to be done by a mega-dynasty, her heroic late-game home runs against Ko-oren and Zyarus were instrumental in the Tigers' advancement. After two years spent in slow decline, WBC40 marked her last hurrah, culminating in a Ro16 walk-off three-run home run before that fateful game-tier in Game Five finally cemented her in the public's memory.

How Umbar Won the 2nd CBL
Part 3: Semifinals

1. Urrheddiao Knights vs. 4. Deprí Lanar Rangers

Urrheddiao Knights 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 1 3
Deprí Lanar Rangers 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 2 X 4

Deprí Lanar Rangers win the series, 4-3.
A tight series, with three one-run games. Matthieu Gammond vs. Yera Amonde, and both players did do well. However, the real player of the series was Deprí Lanar Rangers pitcher Jason Higgsby, who won Game 2 (seven innings pitched, two runs conceded), won Game 7 (eight innings pitched, one run conceded) and has three innings of solid relief in between. It is a disappointing result for the Knights, who had prevailed in achieving the pennant; their gaffe in Game 4 at the top of the eleventh will be talked about for some time.

2. Felswyr Fire vs. 3. Umbar Corsairs

Felswyr Fire 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 5 0 5
Umbar Corsairs 1 0 1 0 0 1 0 2 0 2 7

Umbar Corsairs win the series, 4-3.
The other series also went seven games, the Corsairs' second seven-game series in a row. After exchanging blows in the first two games, the Corsairs' Bryan Dehart pitched into the eighth inning in Game 3, and then the Fire's George Hanson dominated in Game 4, pitching a complete game and conceding one run on five hits. Game 5 and Game 6 were also one-run affairs, with the Fire's Alisen Moyamoto hitting a walk-off home run in Game 6; this led to a winner-take all in Game 7, where Moyamoto hit a grand slam on the top of the eighth to tie the game after seven solid innings from Hillary Angelou before Matthieu Gammond hit a walk-off homer to send the Corsairs to the Finals.

Rangers vs. Corsairs. Hillary Angelou vs. Jason Higgsby. Matthieu Gammond and Polly Potts vs. Yera Amonde. However, the Corsairs have the best bullpen in the playoffs. Who will claim the second title?

Player of the Game Profiles posted on TalkBaseball.qd website.

    Game 19: Luke Phelps

Neither starting pitcher fared badly at Raptor Park and it was a close run game through seven innings, when the Things looked to have snatched the lead. Georgia Tech won in the 11th inning when Enrique Velasquez, hitless to that point, drove in two on a double and Ian Vega cleaned up in the bottom half. That took the shine off a great day for Luke Phelps. Despite playing both catchers – Jun Jiang DH’d, with most other options sitting against the left hander Montoya – and Jiang hitting three doubles to tie a 120+ year record for the Things, it was Phelps who stood out. In front of the plate he went 4-6 and sparked the rally at the bottom of the ninth after the Things had blown their lead. Behind the plate he caught impeccably, blocking a couple of potential wild pitches and throwing out three base-runners. It was just a shame he couldn’t get a win.

    Game 20: Naoko Hisakawa

Hisakawa remains, as expected, the Things’ leading offensive weapon. Their run-scoring has been good despite the failure of the middle order power hitters to hit, hit with power, or even show up to the ballpark half the time given the absurd number of lefty starters we’re facing. Hisakawa remains swishing along calmly at the centre of it all. Tonight she went 3-4 off the knuckleballer Daki Chuan, including a deep solo homer that cleared the fence at the historic Eden Gardens. Her defence continued to be great, too, with an acrobatic diving catch to rob her opposite number Qureshi of a hit and quiet any thoughts of a comeback rally in the 8th.

    Game 21: Ben Wilson

Hisakawa’s individual strength is also a weakness for the team: she’s received three intentional walks during the Classic already and that will only increase as does the pressure on teams chasing playoff spots. Having a solid hitter behind her to discourage or punish those free passes is essential, and Wilson is steadily emerging as that. Brought in as a power hitter he’s swiped five bases; thought of as a DH-only option he’s had four outfield assists with an arm that some of the Things’ struggling relievers must be jealous of. The pop hasn’t quite been there, but he launched an enormous bomb against Xanneria to follow an earlier sac fly that was only denied at the wall by a great catch. The young ballplayer looks an asset on all three phases.

Finisterran Minor League Rings Alarm Bell

The structure of Ko-orenite baseball is pretty simple. There is a nationwide league at the top, with two authoritative baseball leagues feeding into it (you might call them Triple-A depending on where you are from), two leagues that play almost as many games as the top level one. Then there are two short-season/rookie leagues as well.

And one of the 'Triple-A' divisions just announced its annual reports. Finisterran baseball is not in a good place right now, and it's not immediately apparent what's causing it. Their counterparts, the Yoshiman Minor League, are in no trouble at all - in fact, their attendance is rising, its parity is fine, and the level of play is as good as it's ever been. The two short-season/rookie leagues are fine as well, one still within its first decade of operations (the Western Minor League), the other as the oldest baseball of the archipelago (the Katashi Minor League).

Finisterre has two large cities, both of which have one top level team (the Santa Teresa Stars and the Ferrovente Whales). They have then decided to keep those cities intact and not put a minor league team there, and instead put the twelve teams (as every league in Ko-oren consists of twelve teams) in remote towns and detached suburbs of the two large cities. Perhaps that has something to do with the maximum attendance - half of Finisterre is excluded from the minor league straight away. Some minor league teams have no trouble at all (Luneda Lunars, São Pedro de Seines CdB), some have already packed up and set up operations in nearby Gehrennan towns (Lanercost Sycamore, Granon Astra, Monarches Rouges, Chamiers Citron), and the remaining six are all not in perfect shape anymore. Talent pools dry up a little, with players opting to play in a short-season/rookie league and go either to the Yoshiman league or straight into the professional game. It seems that players and their agents don't see the Finisterran Minor League as a viable way to the top anymore. Are we seeing a new pecking order being formed right in front of our eyes, with KBL > YML > FML > KML/WML instead of KBL > YML/FML > KML/WML?

Baseball clubs across the nation had record-high applications for amateur play following the WBC win and the few good years after that. Ko-oren is still at that level, arguably, but applications have plummeted, participation is dwindling, and apparently the Finisterrans are the first to figure it out. Is this the effect of being the most politically divisive sport on the archipelago for two decades on end? Good results can mask an underlying problem, but when that finally rears its ugly head, good luck.

It's all not the fault of the national team, who are still awaiting their new jerseys, and are 16-5 with a four game lead over Kohnhead, Inner AngianaUsordia, and a falling Terre Septentrionale squad. Nine games to go, five wins needed to take the group and that's with the expectation that one of the three followers wins their nine fixtures. At a run differential of +52, Ko-oren are the third best running team in the Classic this time and we're not yet sure how to feel about that. We've never been a high scoring team or anywhere close to it - maybe people should be watching the 'unified' team to find some pleasure in baseball again. Even when the national team is playing better than ever, baseball just isn't spared when it comes to bad news.

Firat Hawes stood at the serving counter, taking a Burger, when he felt the tingling in his neck. Phillip Weeks stood behind him.

“Do you know what time loops are?”, Phillip asked.

“No”, Firat answered, feeling already tired.
“That is when you live through the same day or another amount of time again and again. Ever happened to you?”
“No.”
“I think I experience that.”
“Aha.”

“After my buzzer woke me up, I saw a new Sci-Fi-Show from Drawkland on my still running TV and I knew what would happen in it. As if I had seen it before", Weeks whispered.
“That sounds more like a Déjà-vu.”
“No, that’s an Eclair”, said Philip, pointing to one of the pastries in front of them. “However, we played against Liventia, you remember.”
Firat took an éclair, wondering why they still let Phillip pitch from time to time at the start.
“Oh yes, another loss.”
“Exactly. I am standing at the mound and knew from every batter how they would hit the ball….”
“Then why don’t you throw the ball so that he misses it?”
“I can’t. They just hit sometimes and I can’t avoid it, no matter what. It is as if fate is determined.”
“Ok. Sure. Why not?”, sighed Firat.
“I found to a new faith in Alhaymana, in his wisdom lies the solution to how to accept that. You should hear his words.”
“You already told me.”
After he had said that, Firat already regretted his remark.
“No I didn’t.”
“Maybe I just remember wrong.”

“Yes, remembering. That is the problem. Hamburger and French fries with mayo”, Phillip muttered when Firat shovelled some French fries to his Burger. He himself had only something covered in aluminium foil on his tablet.
“Why don’t you take one?”
“No, I am just remembering what you get.”
Firat filled some orange juice into a glass.
“See, I knew you would get orange juice. It repeats!”, Phillip said triumphant.
“I always take orange juice, it is my favourite drink”, Firat tried to explain the obvious.

“Think of a number.”
“A number?”
“Just any number, so that I can tell you which one you took.”
“Ok. Done. I have one.”
“Which one is it?”
“What?”
“Tell me which one it is so I can tell you in the next loop what you are thinking about.”

Firat massaged his forehead.
“Fine. 18.”
“18, 18, 18. Until tomorrow”, Phillip said, “despite, you won’t remember.”

He went off, looking around, obviously trying to remember thinks happening around him.
Firat felt a bit sorry for him. He wasn’t sure if it was his fault that Weeks was this way. Or if some lunacy was just his undeniable fate, no matter if and how his brain was reset. He shook his head and grabbed a second éclair.

Nine matches remain in the Golden Edition of the World Baseball Classic's group stage. With the number of games dwindling, each match becomes more magnified for teams that are fighting to claim one of the guaranteed spots in the knockout stages.

Fortunately for the Sarzonian national baseball team, that battle doesn't apply to them. The Stars took two out of three matches in the latest set of three, but saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end in the third game with a 13-inning 4-2 defeat to Megistos after second baseman Ian Danielson hit a rare inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to draw the score level.

The result leaves Sarzonia with a 17-4 record, good for a six-game lead over second placed Valanora, who are in a battle with Megistos and Sevendia for the second guaranteed spot in the knockout rounds. Darmen have already been eliminated from contention for the Group 2 title with a 6-15 record. Meanwhile, No. 18 Northwest Kalactin are eight matches behind the Stars and would need a miracle to catch up for the group crown.

Manager Geoff Yancey's team can now begin to look at the rest of the field in earnest and begin to project where they might land in the knockout seedings. Newmanistan, which comes into this World Baseball Classic ranked fifth in the multiverse, have already officially mathematically clinched a spot in the knockout rounds with a gaudy 20-1 record in Group 11. They would obviously be the top overall seeds if the knockout rounds began immediately. The Stars would earn the No. 2 seed as they have the second best record of any team in the current competition. Both the Rockets and the Stars are succeeding with pitching and defence, as Newmanistan's 49 runs are the fewest conceded in the competition. Sarzonia's 53 runs allowed is second fewest.

The Rockets have also been prolific on offence, scoring 121 runs, behind only world No. 1 Cassadaigua in runs scored. Sarzonia's 103 run output is level with two other teams for 13th most among the 78 teams, so the Stars haven't been run-starved. However, the Stars have been far more reliant on their pitching and defence than either the Rockets or the Fillies. For Yancey, who began his international career as a hitting coach, it's a strange position, but he said he didn't mind that.

"As long as we win and play sound, fundamental baseball, it doesn't matter if we're not quite as dominant at the plate as we'd like to be," he said. "They say offence wins games, defence wins championships anyway, and if we can win another [World Baseball Classic] trophy, I'll take it." Despite the offensive struggles compared to Newmanistan and Cassadaigua, the Stars have the fourth highest run differential at plus-50, which places the Stars ahead of the Dagans. Newmanistan's plus-72 run differential is by far and away the best in the tournament.

Even if the Stars mathematically clinch their spot in the next round of three matches, Yancey said he is not expecting to take his foot off the gas.

"You have to remember that if we slip up, we give ourselves a mathematically tougher bracket," he said. "We need to be focused, and now isn't the time to lose that focus."

Batter Up!: Short Summaries (Games 19-21)

Postby TJUN-ia » Mon Nov 16, 2020 10:23 am

Game 19 - TJUN-ia (22) 5-6 The Greater Nordics (14) (King Lauritz I Stadium, Copenhagen)
Jose Almas would start for another night in Copenhagen against The Greater Nordics. With the teams entering the contest only one game apart, this was going to be a big game no matter who came out on top. The first inning would set up the entire game as both teams scored homers: Bryce Calhoun with a grand slam in the top and Aleksi Hansen with 2 in the bottom. 4-2 already, talk about quick baseball. Unfortunately, things would turn sour very quickly for Almas as, by the end of the 5th, the hosts had fought back to lead 5-4 meaning he was gone from the mound. Kim Tsu-Ka was brought on as the replacement and he would help steer the ship for a while as the Battin' Jags looks for either the tieing run or the lead-off run. The former would finally arrive in the 8th, a nice dinger by Angel Enrique making it 5-5, but it should've been the former. The Nordics would find a way to win this game, Josefine Kron walking off the game with a dinger of her own. The Jags were now 2 games back of the Nordics and all was not well.

Game 20 - Sangti (UR) 3-5 TJUN-ia (22) (The Diamond in The Gardens, New Washington)
Kyle McNash would start another 3-game home stretch in New Washington against Sangti. This would be TJUN-ia's first game against the Indios since that 10-1 demolition of the Battin' Jags in San Rafael and while the confines of The Diamond in The Gardens are usually friendly, they wanted revenge in this instance. Most of the revenge would be done within the first 3 innings with 2 homers, a solo one by Bryce Calhoun in the 2nd and a Grand Slam by Ki Yung-son in the 3rd. At 5-0 up, everyone calmed down and the game went to a slower pace until the 6th. That was when the Indios got onto the board, Joenard Karlos Abao with a 3-run bomb. To ensure what happened in Copenhagen didn't happen again here, McNash was brought off for LCL and he would manage to shut out the Indios for the rest of the game. A great win for the Jags and Phillip Hellas-Verona could take greatness from that fact that with The Graeter Nordics getting shut out at Ranoira, the gap was down to 1 game again.

Game 21 - Tha Great Pond (UR) 8-0 TJUN-ia (22) (Rounders Field, Portside)
It would not be a fun time for Chris Harris or for PH-V in Portside. Tha Great Pond wanted a statement win and they certainly got that in The Jungle. 2 runs in the 2nd saw the Ducks go 2-0 up, but TJUN-ia couldn't do anything against the fireballs of Donald Duck himself. A Grand Slam happened in the 5th, Claudia Duck the scorer (we think) and Harris was gone but even Shin Suzuki couldn't stop the rot that was taking over Rounders Field. Another 2 runs came in the 7th and that was the end of another embarrassing night for TJUN-ian baseball, despite the best wishes of Pedro Volcoron. Getting shut out 8-0, at home, to Tha Great Pond definitely felt worse than that 10-1 drubbing in Sangti and now the group is up for grabs. TJUN-ia is 2 games behind the Nordics and 2 ahead of both the Ducks and the Krauts with 9 to play. We need to ensure that we do not waste these 9 games and fall to the wayside in the quest for back-to-back playoffs. GO JAGS!

Despite Decisive Win Over the Greater Nordics,
Krauts' Mood Spoiled After Dropping One to Rwekazaland

Image
Leonardo Harrison (pictured) has been effective as always, but he
hasn't been able to elevate the team in the way he hoped

Such is the way of life for an inconsistent squad. Ranoria had a chance to go on a nice three game winning streak, but slipped up against an unranked team who's sitting at 9-12. Not that we're doing much better, at 11-10, to be fair. By now the Krauts have virtually no shot at playoff contention, and in fact will struggle just to improve marginally off of their performance a season ago. This team was objectively weaker a went 15-15 in that edition of the World Baseball Classic. This time around, they are hovering at 11-10, and finishing 4-5 is most definitely on the table.

Jesse Griffith, who has apparently been working with Philip Lux to improve his batting, did manage to knock a ball out of the park in the team's win against The Greater Nordics, who are currently in control of the group, but he's going to have to play better down the stretch if the Krauts are going to make any sort of splash in the late stages here. The rest of the team is pretty static. The von Kuhn brothers are good batters with home run potential, Leonardo Harrison and Philip Lux are constant playmakers who carry the team, and the rest of the position players, well, are sub par against the standards of this competition. The pitchers are in similar straights, with Paul Verona, Erik Schmidt, and Parker Majors being strong, effective players while the rest of the squad lags behind.
Fan of football, the Murican kind. But soccer is cool too! Just not really my thing. C(:^D/-<
I go by Ran. Unless, of course, you want to type out Ranoria. That's your decision.
