Three hours they had been at it. Well, Jesse Griffith had been at it. Tristen Feng had cited his ‘sore old bones’ as a valid excuse to stop about an hour in. It was a routine that the two had become used to in their months, now, of training together.

He took a sip of his sports drink, loaded with electrolytes, and laughed as his teammate, a dozen years his junior, cried out in agony, suspended from a loft, only his calves locked in place as he forced the rest of his body into a sit-up like motion. “Come on, that’s only two! You’re as scrawny as they come, this body weight crap should be easy!” Jesse didn’t reply, grinding through another few reps while Feng watched attentively. As much as he pushed the poor kid, the last thing he wanted was for him to get hurt, or worse, injured.

“Alright Jesse, three more, and we’ll get out of here, no more strength training today, just three more!”

The fifteen year old pro gritted his teeth and forced out a rep, air hissing out as he came up, inch by agonizing inch.

“Two more!”

This time, his breath was less controlled, coming out in sporadic gasps, but Jesse came up once again, finishing the rep and losing control just a bit on the way down. But Feng’s encouraging, and quite possibly sadistic, demeanor was absolute, unwavering.

“Come on kid, you’ve got another one!” Except, he didn’t, his muscle giving out on the last rep, and he fell back, eyes scrunched, sweat pouring from his body.

“N-nah,” he tried to force a laugh, “D-don’t think so.”

“Yeah, yeah, alright,” Feng reached down and grabbed his arms, hoisting him up into a sitting position and helping the kid unlatch once he was up. Not bad, kid.”

Jesse Griffith gasped, his thin chest labored with every breath, and managed a desperate question “Done?”

Tristen nodded, “Yup, done. Overtraining is a real thing, kiddo.” He checked his watch with a grin, “Done strength training, at least. We’ve still gotta hit the batting cages today, can’t have you batting two thirty five again, back home at least.”

“I’m fifteen,” Jesse groaned in protest, rolling over to one side and pushing himself to a sitting position with nothing but arm strength.

“Don’t care. You’re a professional, and a young one. You can make a lot of progress right now, best to take advantage of it if you wanna turn out like Leo.”

Jesse Griffith, at his spry fifteen years old, shook his head, “Leo’s the best in the country. Come on now.”

“Oh come on, not this crap again,” Tristen Feng slapped his protege upside the head, “You’re the youngest pro ever, so you’re on pace to be better than anyone. And hell, speaking of Leo, you do kinda remind me of him,” the veteran trailed off, nodding wistfully.

“Really now?” Jesse didn’t particularly seem interested, leaning against a post and just now catching his breath.

“Besides the whole youth thing,” his mentor threw out, “You move like him, when you’re hitting and fielding. You’re both very fluid at shortstop, instinctive, all that. He’s made a career off his reflexes from there.” Feng passed him a bottle, and Jesse accepted it gratefully.

After he’d chugged a good half of the thing, he glanced over, “Bit of a reach old timer. A lot of guys have similar movements, doesn’t make them Leonardo freaking Harrison.”

“Let me finish, kid,” Triesten tossed his own bottle over his head, where it bounced off the rim of the trash can before falling in, “What really gets me, you’ve got heart like Leo does. He never let anything hold him back, and you’re the same way,” Tristen hopped to his feet, “Except fatigue.

For all the crap he gave him, Feng couldn’t help but admire the kid. He himself was an accomplished player, a three time all star, but Jesse Griffith had gotten himself one of those nods at just fifteen years of age. He was gifted, physically and mentally, with the ability to play baseball. Sure, he was raw, and he had made some stupid mistakes as a rookie, but once he bulked up enough to start consistently hitting home runs, once he caught up to the speed of the professional game, he could go down in history.

And, Feng had to remind himself, the World Baseball Classic was a higher standard of competition than the Federation by far and away. If there was one way to catch him up to the speed of Ranoria’s Federation, the Classic was it.

Jesse scoffed, hopping to his feet with all the youthful spring that he could muster, “Yeah, right old man. We’ll see about that. How many movements did you do today, eh?” Just as the words came out, the youngster gasped, and doubled over. Feng laughed, seeing the teen’s abs cramp up after the hell they had just been put through.

Feng knew it was a typical teenage response to praise. The kid was young, he’d grow into it. Hopefully.

“Well,” he rolled his head to the side, “About half as many as you. But like I said, there’s such a thing as overtraining. Now quit all of this ‘my belly hurts,’ crap” he raised his voice at the end, as if to mock him, “And let’s get going.”

Jesse looked up at him warily, shoulders sagging just a bit, and Feng rolled his eyes, “I’m just jonesing ya, kid, you’re doing great. Now c’mon.”

“Yes sir!” He lit back up immediately, scooping up his bag and haphazardly throwing in his sweat-drenched clothes, wrist wraps, and other gym paraphernalia before bounding to the side of the older player, who snapped at him playfully.

“And how many times do I have to tell you, stop calling me ‘sir.’ I’m your teammate, not your dad.” Feng scooped up his own bag, long since packed up, and slung it over his shoulder before beckoning the rookie on. “Hurry up. We need to get there early enough to have some time before Leo, you know he’s going to be loud as hell the second he misses a swing.”

“Right!”

Xanneria will open the scoring on an error here in the 1st, as Jiang scrambles back to the backstop to collect the wayward throw. Martin understandably fuming on the mound and makes a ‘calm down’ gesture towards the big right fielder. At least, I hope that’s what that gesture meant…”

    “…ripped down the right field line, but that’s headed foul again. Hisakawa is 3 for 3 tonight with a 3-run homer to her name. Up again, the pitch – slashed to deep centre-right. This one will land in and skip to the wall! Hisakawa rounding third, the relay throw is way behind her and the slide is barely needed. Triple for Naoko, small band of loyal Silver Sox fans cheering wildly!…”

    “…the runner goes as the pitch is low, and Jiang comes up with a handful of dirt. Blocked it with his legs, a nice hockey goalie move, but he has no throw, so it’ll be a steal of second. Isaacson, delivers, groundball, and Matsuoka shows some nice glovework there, ranging over and making the underhand flick back to Isaacson, who got to first in time. So the single and the steal cost nothing and Isaacson has pitched well in relief here after Martin struggled to find the strike zone…”

    “…plonked him! Drilled Steinnsson square in the shoulder, and the big man shakes it off and takes his base. Retaliation after the hot-headed Reenberg’s inside pitch got away from him, maybe. But I think that’s all, some muttered words exchanged but no harm done otherwise…”

    “…weak fly pops up. Tamura calls it. The catch. And the win! The Things have recorded the first Quodite win in international baseball for the small matter of 125 years! Not too many fans making the trip to Xanneria but there will be many watching and listening back home. 8 – 5, not a perfect start from Martin who didn’t locate his pitches well, but the gender-non-specific-bovine-pen did their job admirably. On the offensive side Naoko Hisakawa the standout, a double short of a cycle before she was substituted. The Things head home to the Frosty Dome now, where they’ll play Chromatika in the first international game of baseball in Quintessence of Dust for – well, you know how it goes…”




    “…Symonds swings but never caught up with that heater. Higgsby strikes out the side on a powerful fastball, and after an early blast by Tanaka, some familiar questions about this side’s strength against lefty starters starting to rear their head as the Rangers pitcher cranks it up…”

    “…Andreeva cuts hard and the ball heads foul again as the at-bat reaches double figures. Good patience being shown by Andreeva here. Higgsby sends it, oh sweet sound off the bat, and that one will – go! Line drive that just kept going, 400 feet to right field, and finally something to give the Things some hope here. On a day they’ve struggled to make good contact with Higgsby’s stuff, that was as sweet a hit as you’ll see…”

    “…Potts with a deep shot to left field. Symonds running back hard. But it’s into the stands! And just like that the Amateurs reclaim the lead, on a solo-shot from the designated hitter. Nakamura perhaps ruing the decision of the QBA to use the Amateurs’ DH preference right about now as he reflects on a pitch he might have been dealing to a fellow pitcher rather than a specialist hitter. 443 feet, that’s a serious blast – there’s a short left here at the Frosty Dome but that would have been good for a homer anywhere…”

    “…Tamura lines it straight to to Moyamoto who makes no mistake with a sharp grab. Falls to her knees but holds on and that is the game! Disappointment can be heard in the tame applause pattering around the Frosty Dome, hopes of a successful homecoming after the first win on the road smashed here by 7 innings of excellent pitching from Jason Higgsby and a 3-run blast off the bat of Yera Amonde. For the Things, it’s back on the road in this unconventional schedule, as they head to the SmartTime stadium in Silvedania, without much time to regroup…”




    “…3 – 1 pitch, Hisakawa fouls it off. Bases loaded, 1 out, Things lead by 2 here in the 2nd. The pitch – the swing – high flyball to left. Going back, going back, going all the way! A grand slam by Hisakawa! The small shortstop hits a big ball. Her second homer of the night and Quintessence of Dust take a 6 run lead as Fujimori the pitcher crosses the plate, Jiang, Andreeva…”

    “…quick throw to third as Tamura slides in. And Joguet makes the tag! Furious cap-flinging in the Things’ dugout, not a smart move there by Tamura to try to steal third, and Davis’s hard throw was perfectly placed for Joguet to apply the tag. The Things throw away a runner on second, and Tamura might be getting a lecture from the SYBRmetricians after the game…”

    “…and that throw is in the dirt again! Fujimori’s sinker troubling batters and catcher alike tonight, that’s the second one that’s got away from Jiang. That moves the runners on and Fujimori under pressure. Throws again. Ball grounded weakly, Ljung in fast, snap throw to second across his body, nice from Tamura, and his quick throw finds Kaufer stretching, in time. Double play to retire the side and save Fujimori’s blushes…”

Lions off to good start in WBC 50


It is the 50th anniversary edition of the World Baseball Classic, a cause for celebration around the baseball multiverse! A record 78 teams are participating this year, with each one dreaming of hoisting the championship trophy. It carries extra meaning this year, being the 50th anniversary, and the Lions are no exception to that. After winning their first Classic in WBC 48 (they first entered in WBC 27), they are hungry for more. Coming off of their victory in the pre-WBC Londinium Challenge Invitational, media expectations are sky-high. But this year will be a little different for reasons other than the increased desire for victory among most teams; the series format has been scrapped. While teams will still play three games home and away against each team in their group, they will play these games individually. As such, the group stage will involved more travel and play over a longer period of time. The Lions, however, were not fazed by the new format in their initial three games, taking all of them to start the Classic 3-0.

In game one, the Lions traveled to the nation of The Sarian, the former Esportivan nation. The Sarian does not have a particularly rich baseball history, but they are ranked 27th in the world, a fair number. Cory Sharpe ran into a little trouble in the first inning, yielding a two-out, two-run double to the Bustards' #5 hitter, putting the Lions down 2-0 early. But they struck back in the second. Matthew Gilbert led off with a single and a steal of second base. Jerome Duplantier whacked a 2-1 fastball into the gap in right-center for a double, scoring Gilbert and making it 2-1. Marc Dufors singled to put runners at the corners with none down, and Trevor Hughes' sharp ground ball forced the Saari second baseman to his left in a tough play, scoring Duplantier and moving Dufors to second. Sharpe struck out, but Erik Austin's double down the line scored Dufors, making it 3-2. The Sarian tied it in the fifth on a homer, marking the end of Sharpe's disappointing day; 5 IP, 3 ER is not the line you want to see out of your ace. However, the Lions got a solo shot from Duplantier in the sixth to re-take the lead. After Cody Brock set down the side in order in the sixth, Vic Fleming allowed a run-scoring single in the seventh, as this scrappy Sarian team just wouldn't go away. But Joey Keller hit a two-run shot in the eighth, scoring Kelvin Hill and putting the Lions on top 6-4. Jon Klein and Zach Kelley finished off the Saari batters in the eighth and ninth, respectively, to give the Lions a hard-fought win.

The national team then returned home to face United Hemand Insia, who had fallen 5-4 to Republic of Dixie in their first game. Once again, the Lions fell behind early, when outfielder Teddy Adams hit a two-run homer in the second, putting the road team up 2-0. But starter Dan Cunningham himself sparked a rally in the third, leading off with a sharp single against Nick Lee. Lee seemed a little rattled by allowing a hit to the pitcher, walking Austin on five pitches. With two on and no out, Luke Mills swatted a first-pitch fastball off the wall in center, which bounded past the UHI center fielder. Between the ricochet and Mills' speed, he was into third well ahead of the throw, popping up from his slide, clapping his hands, and shouting enthusiastically. The game was now tied, 2-2. Kelvin Hill struck out, but Keller hit a warning-track fly ball, more than deep enough to score Mills from third, and the Lions led, 3-2. Dufors hit a solo homer in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-2, but the Lions' offense was fairly quiet in this one. Instead, the real star was Cunningham. After allowing the homer to Adams, he set down the next thirteen batters in a row, five via the strikeout. That streak was broken in the seventh when Milo Frasier coaxed a walk on eight pitches to lead off the inning. However, Cunningham set down the next three batters and only allowed a measly single in the eighth. His final line was 8 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, a strong effort. Zach Kelley came in for his second save opportunity and used his slider to strike out Dashiel Gray and Adam Penelope, as well as getting Frasier to bounce out to Mills at short. It wasn't the most dominating victory, but the Lions were 2-0.

In their third game, the Lions took on unranked, unheralded, Republic of Dixie, who hosted the Lions after defeating UHI 5-4 and edging United States of Devonta 3-2 in their second game. Perhaps it's no surprise, then, that this game came down to the wire. Erik Russell used his array of pitches to scatter four hits and two walks across eight inning, yielding just one run against seven strikeouts on the night. Ordinarily, this would have put the Lions in a strong position to win, but they had managed just two runs on the night and took a slim 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Zach Kelley took the mound again, but he was struck by a bout of wildness and hit a batter and walked two. He got out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts, but not before he yielded a sacrifice fly to score the tying run. Republic of Dixie fans were surely disappointed they didn't get more runs out of the bases-loaded situation, but taking the #2 team in the world to extra innings is an achievement in and of itself. Aaron Spencer, the Lions' long reliever, pitched two scoreless before being lifted for a pinch-hitter, but the Dixie relievers held strong and it remained 2-2 going into the top of the 13th. That all came crumbling down for the Republic when a lazy slider was sent flying into the seats for a three-run homer by Marc Dufors, giving the Lions the 5-2 lead. Rocky Gantt, the starter turned multi-inning fireman, came on for his second inning and set down the side in order to finish off the game.

It was a little tougher than expected, probably, but the Lions are 3-0, a strong start to the Classic. They'll have multi-champion Schiltzberg next, then United States of Devonta before returning home to face The Sarian once again.

Three matches into a 30-match "season" is too early to draw any kind of conclusions about a baseball team or a World Baseball Classic, but even though the Sarzonian national baseball team carry a 2-1 record into their next match, manager Geoff Yancey is already dissatisfied with the format of this World Baseball Classic.

"The organisers in Cassadaigua are bloody daft," Yancey said in pointed comments about a format that eschews traditional three-game series in favour of individual matches that sometimes sees teams play one match at home and then travel to play a different opponent away. "This isn't baseball. This is a fucking abomination."

Yancey was fuming about the prospect of playing one match at home, where Sarzonia employ the designated hitter followed by another match away to a team that requires pitchers to hit for themselves. This in addition to the logistical challenges involved with traveling from one country to another without a travel day or without having a chance to get acclimated for three matches.

"We had two matches at Fleetwood Park and one in Northwest Kalactin. We had the DH at home and Mark Conroy and our relief pitchers had to hit for themselves [in Northwest Kalactin]," Yancey said. "I'm going to have a word with the Incorporated Baseball Federation about their decision to vote in favour of Cassadaigua's hosting bid. This is bullshit."

When the topic turned to the team's performance so far in the World Baseball Classic, Yancey said the opening match, which saw Jeff Parrish throw a complete game shutout and finally get rewarded by a Cody Frazier RBI double to right to drive in centrefielder Ryan Brady for the match's only run vindicate his decision to move Parrish ahead of Conroy as the number one starter in the Stars rotation. Parrish limited Megistos to three hits and struck out 10 with only one walk. Conroy struggled in his first start the next night away to Northwest Kalactin, allowing five runs in four innings pitched in Sarzonia's 5-1 defeat to the second highest ranked team in Group 2. Jamie Pearson also had a difficult time in his match, allowing two runs in the top of the second, but the Stars bats came out in the bottom of the frame with a seven-spot in Sarzonia's 12-4 rout of Darmen. Pearson was able to work through six innings to get the victory.

"That was all about hanging in there," Pearson said. "Sometimes you just don't have your best stuff and you have to battle through it like I had to today."

The talk of the Stars other than the wonky format was Parrish, who did have his best stuff. Parrish seemed to relish his new role as the Stars ace, and several bullpen pitchers said privately they enjoyed the chance to just sit back and watch Parrish work his magic.

"He's a beast out there," one pitcher said. "I would hate to have to face him if I'm an international opponent."

Batter Up!: Short Summaries (Games 1-3)

Hello and welcome to the first edition of "Short Summaries", a quick recap of everything you need to know about how TJUN-ia is doing at the golden jubilee edition of the WBC. The road to Cassadiagua is very chaotic and it will be this series that removes the chaos to give you a quick glimpse of how Phillip Hellas-Verona's Battin' Jags are doing. TJUN-ia was a pot 2 team for the draw and placed into Group 7 with The Greater Nordics, Ranoria, Sangti, Tha Great Pond and Rwekazaland. Many of you will remember the Nordiques from the WBC48 days but everyone else is brand new, so the unknown was certainly a big theme for the first 3 games.


Game 1 - Tha Great Pond (UR) 6-10 TJUN-ia (22) (Rounders Field, Portside)
Due to the scheduling, each of TJUN-ia's starting pitchers will play only 1 opponent for the entire group stage. This was what Chris Harris had to deal with on Opening Day in The Jungle as he took on the Ducks of Tha Great Pond. Literally, in this instance, as Tha Great Pond was made entirely of sentient ducks and all with the last name "Duck". It was an interesting team to play and it was competitive for the first few innings before Matoko Kagawa blew it wide open with a Grand Slam in the 4th to make it 6-2 in favour of the Jaguars. The Ducks responded with 3 of their own in the 5th, courtesy of a homer from Nathaniel Duck, but that was the only real opposition they put out for the rest of the game. Another 3-run homer, this time from Pedro Moires, put the game to bed in the 8th if it wasn't already. A strong 10-6 win to begin the campaign.

Game 2 - Rwekazaland (UR) 9-0 TJUN-ia (22) (The Diamond in The Gardens, New Washington)
The short flight to New Washington meant Game 2 was happening in The Diamond in The Gardens, with Davis Johnson starting against the unknowns in the form of Rwekazaland. You may have heard of these guys in other sports before, but not in baseball so many were expecting an easy win on New Washington's Opening Day. That didn't turn out to be that way as our opponents came to play against Johnson including 6 runs in the 5th inning 8-0 after 5, not good at all. Johnson was pulled out at this point in favour of Harrison Kyle and he certainly helped stop the flow, conceding only 1 run for the remainder of the game, but the batting was just ice cold in the NAU. Nothing Enrique Lopez could do would help improve the score and TJUN-ia's 2nd game ended in a 9-0 shutout for the opposition.

Game 3 - TJUN-ia (22) 12-5 Ranoria (31) (Cardinal Auditorium, Nashville)
So there was anger in the air for the first road game in Tennessee as TJUN-ia went to the Cardinal Auditorium to take on the Krauts of Ranoria in Nashville. Gene Almac started in the "Battle of the 1-1s" but it would be the batting that stole the show in the Music City with TJUN-ia scoring 7 runs in the first 2 innings. The bats were white-hot and runs were just coming in with the Krauts doing minimal damage themselves. The game was over after the top of the 5th with TJUN-ia up 11-1, but that didn't stop Tim von Kuhn from getting himself a 2-run bomb to ease the pain for the home crowd. TJUN-ia would score only 1 run for the rest of the game, but the point had been made in Nashville. 12-5 the final, demolition on the road, and the Jaguars were 2-1.

THE ROCKET REPORT

MEMORY LANE: WBC 7

World Baseball Classic 7. For many nations that currently participate, this is a classic that is considered ancient history. They can pull it up in their history books, see who won, and not think anything more of it. However, this would be a historic competition as it would mark the debut of the Rockets in international baseball competition. We know how that ended up, but we were still concerned about how this might go.

Baseball has always been the most popular sport in Newmanistan. In trying to explain the passion that our fans have for the game over other games, many point to the slower paced nature of it in comparison to games like either football, basketball, or hockey. Auto racing is in its own category as an individual sport, making baseball the game of choice. It is family friendly, and not a violent sport. Players approach the fans for autographs before the games more so than is seen in other games. This was the sport of choice, and as Newmanistan began to show more of an interest in international sports, there was no question that the Empire absolutely had to enter the World Baseball Classic.

World Baseball Classic 7 was hosted by the nation of Green Wombat, a country that would later be known to have been part of the undeclared Qazox trinity (Qazox, Prux, Green Wombat) , and it was the first time that Green Wombat would host a competition like this, and it would end up being their last. The organizers seemed fine, likely because they were getting internal assistance from Qazox, who was also the defending champion of the tournament. The team would be led by manager Christina Sanders, who at that time was also the manager of the South Charlotte Condors. She had done so well for that small market team, that it seemed to be the best decision at the time, and boy, were we ever right with that one! Sanders assembled the best group of players that could be brought together, and it was expected that superstar Tara Stewart would be the ace of the staff. Stewart was then a 28-year old member of the South Tier Seagulls, who had a dominant curveball and was certainly the best pitcher that we had at the time. Historian Nicole Mitchell says, “Tara Stewart has been a bit of a forgotten commodity in Newmanistan baseball history in regards to our pitching staff. She was a great player domestically, and she has her deserved place in the Hall of Fame here, and she did very well for the Rockets. Thing is, it would be someone else getting the spotlight from this generation of pitchers.” That someone was Stacey Keisler, a 24-year old power pitcher that was fourth in the starting rotation. She could strike people out, for sure, but because she was prone to giving up home runs domestically more often then the others, the decision was made to have her fourth.

Newmanistan was drawn into Pool B, (Groups were called “Pools” and not “Groups” in this Classic) and as proof that you never know what to expect from an unranked team, there was another unranked team in this pool. A nation called Tocrowkia, another future Champion, and one that is currently in the WBC Hall of Fame. The Rockets would also have to contend with Taeshan and Liventia within the group. Prognosticators of other nations seemed to believe in the Rockets capability, perhaps because they were already known as a Baptism of Fire champion. While soccer has nothing to do with baseball, it meant the nation’s athletes, in general, were not completely unknown to the world, and they were given some respect. Although, most still felt that Taeshan and Liventia would get the two playoff spots that were awarded to teams from Pool B.

The first game for Newmanistan did not go well, losing 9-4 to Liventia. They were a power in the baseball world back then, and reminded us that they still are when they knocked us in the playoffs a few Classics ago. At that time, that was an expected score. The game fell apart in the fifth inning, with an error opening up the floodgates to five Liventia runs, allowing them to pull away, 8-3. There was some criticism that Sanders stuck with Tara Stewart a little too long there, and it seemed to be an important learning experience for everyone. In their next game, Newmanistan would get their first ever win, coming against fellow unranked but future WBC Hall of Fame nation, Tocrowkia, 5-3.

The third game of the Classic would be the first home game for the Rockets, and there was so much to be excited about. A loud environment at the stadium that was then just called Pocono City Stadium was incredible, as the fans hoped to pull off an upset over mighty Taeshan. The game went to the 12th, and in it, Sarah Boland, the cleanup batter, hit a walk off home run to give the Rockets the stunning win, and leaving this crowd to be even more enthusiastic. Nicole Mitchell told me of the significance, “With that blast, Newmanistan did more than just win a game. It was really a message to our fans that we could compete with the best in the world at this game, and that we were going to do it right away, you would not have to wait for it. For the team, it created a new level of confidence. It was always there, but now they knew that they really could play with anyone. It also was the beginning of the ‘You Can’t Beat Us’ era that we had over Taeshan, something that went on for a very long time.”

In Game four, Stacey Keisler made her debut. Remember, we were expecting Tara Stewart to be the dominant pitcher, but for Keisler right away her baseball prowess was shown, tossing a complete game shutout in a win over Lovisa, striking out twelve. “It was definitely a sign of things to come with Stacey Keisler,” Mitchell said.

After five games, there was some question as to application of the tiebreakers to advance to the quarterfinals. Without getting into all of the drama, the organizers chose to expand the playoffs to ten teams, and this would send the Rockets to Green Wombat. Two pools of five were created for this stage, with a single round robin. It would be a tough assignment to get out of this pool in the top two, with the likes of Qazox and Liventia in it, but they would do exactly that. Along the way, they would pick up a huge win over Qazox behind the pitching of Stacey Keisler. Earlier in this pool, Tara Stewart would get a complete game shut out. Sarah Boland was showing herself to be the top hitter in the Empire, and they would stay alive, advancing to the semifinal. This unranked, first time nation continued to make an impact.

Taeshan would stand in the way. There was confidence that we could beat the Knights given that we had already done so in the group stage, but this would certainly be more of a challenge. After losing the first game of the best of three, Newmanistan bounced back with a 7-3 win in Game 2, and then a 4-2 win in Game 3, the Rockets eliminated Taeshan in something that would become a familiar statement in this era of sports. They had amazingly advanced to the final.

To win the title, Newmanistan had to find a way to beat Zwangzug in a five game series. The teams would split the first two games, the Zebras taking the odd number games and the Rockets the even numbers. Stacey Keisler, who had been great this whole Classic was on the mound and had the chance to deliver a historic shock championship for the Empire. It would not be the case, as Zwangzug won 5-2, and took home the title. In the long run, this would be a great success for the Rockets even if it took a little while to sink in. For Stacey Keisler, this loss would be motivational for the rest of her international career.

Newmanistan had arrived, now we could only wonder what we were capable of going forward.

The new WBC format is terrible. Here’s why.

(A sports commentary by Johann Holz, on his channel “Barkvillage”)

(First of all, I’d like to stress that this is in no way a criticism of the OOC hosting by Cassadaigua. I understand that there is no other way. This is going to be purely IC.)

The 50th WBC is underway, as you surely noticed, and wouldn’t you have guessed it, fans have already found the first thing to be annoyed about. But before we get into that, let me briefly explain you some things. You should know what the World Baseball Classic is, otherwise, you will not be able to understand things.
The World Baseball Classic is the oldest and most important non-football international competition of the world, going into its 50th edition. That’s 100 years! Every two years, the best nations in the multiverse meet for baseball, and South Newlandia has joined them for the third time in a row. The tournament usually has a group stage, and a knockout stage; and so does this 50th edition. As this one is the biggest Classic in recent memory, there are 13 groups of six teams, with 32 of those making the knockout rounds, to be played in the currently best team in baseball, Cassadaigua. You might be wondering now, if this is all the case, what is the issue?
The group stage format is. South Newlandian fans will be used to the format used in the Classics of 48 and 49; with three-game series home and away. That was also the group stage format in the International Baseball Slam 11 and 12, the latter of which was co-hosted by South Newlandia. That will not be the format for the 50th WBC. Instead, there will be a six-time round robin, for the same number of games; but instead of three at once against each opponent, there will be only one matchup each. This means that a team will face the same team on Matchdays 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, and 26, three times away and three times at home. Why is this bad, you asked?

Disadvantages:

- The travelling
Instead of the usual 9 or even fewer travels between nations, there will be, in South Newlandians case, 29. Yes, twenty-nine international travels. That is bad. For one, both the team and the fans will have to spend tons of time in planes in between multiple different regions of the multiverse. We are not even going to talk about the environmental effects of this, but it makes it almost impossible for big baseball fans to follow the team. Plane tickets are expensive.

- Pitching rotations
As probably a few other nations do, South Newlandia has five starting pitchers. If they rotate perfectly, they will be playing, for example, on match days 1, 6, 11 etc. That’s always the same opponent, and that makes the individual games more boring, because we don’t get to compare pitchers against the same opponent.

- No one even knows what’s going on
In the series format, you could always prepare three games against the same opponent, looking at pitchers and the like. That had the huge advantage of seeing the important series. Now, those important games are just sprinkled in between. Fans will have trouble to keep track of which games are when, and so will the players. It makes it nearly impossible to keep track of the H2H record between two teams. Overall, it just gets super confusing for no good reason.

Seriously, are there any? We couldn’t see a single one. Please don’t make us use it again.

We have heard that, in earlier classics, the solo-game format was the standard. How did people even survive like that? That format is terrible. Let’s get rid of it as soon as possible. Please.

World Baseball Classic 50 Game 1: Hapilopper v. Sicoutimont, and Game 2: Hapilopper v. The Fortem
Over 60,000 fans stood and cheered wildly as the Hapilopper National Baseball Team, as well as those that played on the team during the 49th World Baseball Classic, took the field. This included Charlton Forest, his arm still in a sling from his horrific injury a year previous, Curtis Skinner, now the pitching coach for the team, and Dalton Sadler, who was replaced by Alvin Bannerman. The players were recognized for their involvement in the Hap Thrashers’ deep run in the last WBC, and as they stood along the first base line, the lights at the old Capital Stadium went out and one spotlight focused on a single banner, which would be hung along the outfield roof, recognizing the team’s performance.

But then it was time to get going, and get going they did. In the bottom of the first inning, Levi Berry was on second base, the beneficiary of a sacrifice fly from Dayton Rowe, and Jerome Hayden took to the plate. His first at-bat of the World Baseball Classic, Jerome had one goal in mind – get Levi home and maybe get himself home. He looked over at a sign from a fan hanging over the second deck in deep left field – “HIT IT HERE HAYDEN”. He around that area and swore he saw some fans with huge nets wanting to catch Jerome’s first home run of the classic.

The first pitch sailed by for a ball. Jerome swung at the second pitch and missed for a strike. And as he swung, one could see thousands of flashbulbs go off all over Capital Stadium. He looked at the pitcher, waiting for him to deliver the pitch he wanted. And he got it o the very next one. Jerome swung as hard as he could at it, and he got all of it. He knew he got all of it. Everyone knew he got all of it. He stood and watched as the ball headed towards deep left field, and smiled. He couldn’t hear what he was thinking – nobody could. Capital Stadium went into delirium as the ball sailed towards the first deck of the stadium.

Jerome went for a slow trot around the bases, pumping his fist into the air as fans started fighting each other for the home run ball. It set the tone for the first game of the WBC, as Hapilopper wound up beating Sicoutimont, 6-4.

In game two, the Hap Thrashers were shocked when they traveled to the Fortem, getting beaten by a walk-off three run home run courtesy of Jon Forbes. Dwayne Pocock could only watch and curse to himself as the ball sailed out of the park, but he only had himself to blame. The team from the Fortem had taken advantage of some poor pitching from Dwayne at the worst possible time, and like any good baseball team worth their salt, they took advantage of the moment.

That loss in game two did not set well with the Haps, and after the defeat, the team held a meeting amongst each other, reminding each other that losses like that would be the difference between going back to the playoffs and possibly finding themselves on the outside looking in.

“This attitude some of us have, of that we’re going to make it to the knockouts, regardless of who we’re facing, that shit has to end NOW,” Mo Beverly snapped. “We need to quit it, and we need to play hard against whoever the hell we’re playing. I get it, y’all think you’re good. Maybe we are, but we need to play like it. I don’t want to miss another playoffs. God damn it, guys!”

Nobody was saying anything. They understood the frustrations and they got it.

“The Fortem is a fucking unrated team!” Mo shouted. “What are we doing losing to an unrated team? It’s not like we have a three-game set with them, it’s one and done! And we just lost to them? What is that going to do for us if we’re going up against some of the heavy hitters? Are we going to be arrogant against them? Huh?”
The rest of the team started to nod their heads in agreement, which only set Mo off a little more.

“God damn it, don’t just nod your heads. I want to hear something from some of you. We got beat by an unranked team…”

“Just because they’re unranked doesn’t mean they’re shit,” interjected Levi Berry. “That’s a better team than you’re giving them credit for, and we just saw it. We’ve got to respect whoever we’re facing, regardless of if it’s the Sherpa Empire or Lower Buttholington.”

“THANK YOU!” Mo said. “But I didn’t say they were shit. I said they’re unranked.”

“And you implied they were shit,” Levi interrupted. “And if we go in thinking we’re playing shit, we’ll play like shit. Let’s start respecting who we’re facing.”

“You know? If that means we beat them, I’m fine with that,” Mo said. “Nothing is automatic in this world. Ever. I get what you’re saying, Berry. We’re on the same page and we’re working. We just need to go into games not thinking we’re automatically going to win, because that’s how we lose. I think a lot of us had that attitude, and the Fortem gave us a reality check. Let’s change our attitude and let’s change it now.”

That attitude adjustment was evident when the Haps returned to Capital Stadium to face West Phoenicia. Almost as if they felt like they had something to prove, the Hap Thrashers jumped out of the starting gate, and once again, on the strength of a Jerome Hayden home run in the first inning and another in the fourth, the Thrashers took a 5-3 win over West Phoenicia.

At the end of the third game, the Haps, HUElavia and the Fortem all had six points at the top of the table. There was still a lot of baseball to be played, but the Haps felt they had to treat every game as an elimination. Any opponent they faced would be a threat, regardless of who it was. They had to treat any opponent as if they were just as good as the Sherpas or the Cassadagans or the Newmanistanians.

National Base Ball team begins international sojourn

In what is a first for our great nation, the National Association of Professional Base Ball Clubs have organized a team of their finest players to compete in an exhibition tournament called the World Base Ball Classic. Representatives from 78 nations around the world, many of whom we have never heard hide nor hair from, are sending their men (and, truth be told, women, though competition between the sexes is a most vulgar thing) to this competition. The winner, I am told, will receive a fine silver trophy, but first, they must win enough of their first thirty games to advance to a number of play-off series. This renders it a most strenuous competition which only the strongest and hardiest of nations can hope to achieve. This is the way of the world, though, and those races and individuals which have not the in-born stamina of our hardy Bardneyians must fall by the wayside. I have it on good authority that Bardney ought to be favored to win many games and show these other fellows how to play the game of base ball. Let me enumerate the reasons why I believe this to be so.

First, the way in which this base ball tournament is to be played puts Bardney at a distinct advantage. The rules by which this international form of base ball is to be contested differ from our own rules. First of all, the hurler stands at 60 feet, 6 inches from the plate, rather than 50 feet, as in our game. This gives our batsmen additional time to strike the ball and undoubtedly makes the game easier. Second, it is the custom of international base ball that the fielders wear gloves, unlike our own fielders. Thus, the nations which habitually play by these rules are at a disadvantage compared to our own men, who have honed their skills playing without gloves. If a man can easily catch a ball without a glove, how much easier must it be to catch one struck well with a glove? Finally, pitchers are permitted to throw overhand, and throw at speeds exceeding what our batsmen are used to. Despite this, our batsmen will have more time to strike the ball and they have practiced against these types of hurlers. The teams of our opponents, however, have not practiced against the hurling styles of our men, and will be hard-pressed to adjust to the deliveries and types of pitches our men can throw.

Second, we Bardneyians play much better as a team than do these foreigners. In our game, the skill of the hurler is of import to the game, but it is the contest between the batsman and the fielders that is the true test of a good base ball team. Our players know how to assist one another on any struck ball and are accustomed to well-made catches and crisp throws that render a batsman or a runner called out. In the international game, the pitcher is considered the most important figure, and his skill in individual contests against each batsman determines victory or defeat for his team. Thus, the players in the field are rendered less useful and less skilled, for they spend all their time at leisure while the hurler does all the work. They cannot be accustomed to assisting each other or truly playing as a team.

Thirdly, Bardneyians display a greater fortitude which shall serve them well in this strenuous competition. For instance, in our game of base ball, a hurler is expected to play the full nine innings (or more, if need be) and bat for himself. This builds up the strength of his arm and his batting eye, so he is able to more fully render his services to his club. But in some of these other nations, it is the custom for the hurler to pitch less than the whole game, perhaps even as few as four or five innings. Then additional hurlers come on, one inning at a time. This is clearly a function of the poor stamina of this international teams, and the additional hurlers are surely inferior in quality to their team's first. This gives our team an advantage, allowing them to bat against weak or inferior hurlers often. I am also informed that in some nations, it is the custom for pitchers not to bat at all, instead employing a player who neither pitches nor plays the field, but simply bats in the stead of the pitcher. In addition to this being a perversion of the spirit of the game, it robs the pitcher of a chance to more fully contribute to his club and surely depreciates his value in the eyes of his teammates. It is like having two half-players, rather than a whole one, and wholes should always be preferred to halves. Lastly, the other teams employ a great number of substitutes and use more than our team's three starting pitchers. This means that they must employ the services of lesser players at a higher frequency than ours because of their lack of fortitude, which no doubt stems from both innate qualities and a paucity of proper conditioning. We can employ our best players every or nearly every game, which raises the overall skill with which our team plays the game, as opposed to the numerous use of inferior substitutes by other teams.

Now as for the results of our first games in competition, I suppose it will take some time for our men to accommodate themselves to the way the international game is played. Nevertheless, our team has given a good show of themselves. In our first game, against HUElavia, in the stadium of the Bristol Atlantics, in their first inning, Bardney's own "Papish" Hamish Monaghan struck a ball that bounded over the fence with two men on base. With great chagrin, the umpire ruled it a double, according to international rules, instead of a home run, by Bardney rules. Manager Clarence "Cocky" McArty protested, but to no avail. Still, our side led, 2-0. Unfortunately, the "Dartford Flash", Kermit Connelly, could not make the lead stand up, and he yielded five runs for the game as we went down to defeat, five runs to three.

In the second game, our men scored five runs in the second inning, with "Long Gerry" Zeidler and "Gentleman" Eddie Whitcomb striking balls manfully to contribute to our lead and the removal of the West Phoenician hurler, Cliff Samuels, from the box. But again, the batsmen of the opposing team proved formidable, and they scored eight runs in the first four innings, including six in the second inning. Although eight runs is not unusual in games of Bardney base ball, "Cocky" McArty saw that the West Phoenician team had batted well by international standards and removed "Honest" Horace Geiger in favor of Noel "Numbers" Osbourne of the St. Clair Bluelegs. Young Osbourne hurled five innings and permitted just one additional run, but the other West Phoenician hurlers held our batsmen to just two more runs and the Confederates took the victory, nine runs to seven.

In the third game, the team from the nation of Sicoutimont came to New Delphia. As I understand it, these men came from a nation that formerly was regarded well in the world of international base ball, and from a nation that permitted democratic freedoms, as we do. But now they have been long absent from the base ball stage, and they have become subject to a despot called Alphonse Pomeroy, who preaches a ridiculous ideology of ‘National Durability’. What this means in practice is that property rights are not respected, all but those who rigidly adhere to Pomeroy's teachings are watched, and men line their own pockets with the people's money. Not something that at all would occur here, at least as long as we have good Liberal governance. No telling what might happen if the Progress or God forbid, the Social Democratic Party were to gain control of our government. As expected, our men defeated the team from Sicoutimont, who were no doubt unaccustomed to playing a free man's game. Base ball and freedom are one and the same; one cannot expect a team of slaves to play this game well, nor defeat a team steeped in liberty. Our men scored seven runs to Sicoutimont's five, with the "Duquesne Dynamite" Everett Harrison driving in three runs by himself. A glorious victory indeed.

Although our team has tasted victory just once in three games, I firmly believe them to be the superior team in this competition and that they will show their quality as the competition goes on and other sides begin to tire. Mark my words, Bardney will begin to win far more than one of every three games.

The dust of the first three match days is slowly settling and looking at the table of group 4 right now, it looks like Operation Knockout is in full swing, no pun intended.

The first match brought Daskel to Port Rhovanyon, whose junior team had won the International Baseball Slam in remarkable fashion, and were deemed Tikariot's biggest competitor for second spot and with that a direct qualification for the knockout stages. And led by a De'Andre Stevens in stellar form our team did not disappoint. After a scoreless inning and a half a three-run homerun by JJ Bernardetti broke the stalemate and put Tikariot on the score board, followed by a single RBI by Carlton Baines, bringing Bronson Ghirardello home for a 4-0 lead. scoring in four of the following six innings Tikariot had a comfortable 11-0 lead before allowing Daskel one single run in the ninth, setting the Owls off to a stunning 11-1 start to the World Baseball Classic. Stevens pitched five and a half innings with just one hit and showed that he is back after his injury plagued season and on the offensive side four home runs can be put into the score book of the Owls, two by Bernardetti and one each for Yosvani Fernandez and Blair Consigliere, who came on for Michael Romanov in the eighth inning after the left fielder had to leave the stadium supported by team doctor Ramon Contreras with what seemed like a twisted ankle.

Staying in Port Rhovanyon, Oscioru were next and again the starting pitcher put on a marvellous display with Patrick Lundgren keeping the opposing offense to two hits in four innings before making way for Anthony Garcia, who then conceded three runs in the fifth, bringing Oscioru a 3-2 lead. The response of Tikariot, however, was remarkable with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and Foster Fleming managing a rare grand slam homerun, only the second of his career, basically single-handedly deciding the game as Oscioru only brought one more run in, giving Tikariot another double digit win with 11-4.

Game three saw the Owls traveling to virtually unknown Thea Liters and everything was almost done and over with after the third inning when three home runs by Michael Romanov, William Carruthers and Bronson Ghirardello brought the black and purple a 5-0 lead right from the get go. Graham Pettersson conceded one run each in the fourth and sixth inning before handing over the mound to Santiago Marillo, who allowed four more runs in the remaining innings, but A Carlton Baines solo homer and two RBIs by Carruthers in the ninth sealed the 8-6 win for Tikariot, giving them a perfect start to the tournament.

Looking ahead, the next game is another home stand, but given that they Owls will have to face the yet unbeaten number one in the world, Cassadaigua, would suggest that we should not expect a continuation of the perfect run, but that being said, you never know what a wave of euphoria can do. Following this we will have two games on the road, at first in Carung, as unranked as Thea Liters have been, and then the return match in Daskel, where the Daskies surely will be out for revenge.

"What the hell?" Travis muttered as he slapped around for his phone, disoriented. Tori stirred in the bed next to him, also muttering various curses and angry noises.

"Didn't you say you didn't have the alarm on?" she whined as Travis blinked at his phone screen.

"Yeah ... yeah I didn't even open the app yesterday, remember?" he said, confused. He knew he didn't set the alarm for this morning. He made a point not to. But it still went off, and at the same time as yesterday, too. And the same alarm notification popped up ... "It's Gameday! On Corps!" it read, in an obliviously chipper tone.

"It must've been some glitch, or maybe I set it for Saturday and Sunday too, or something ..." he mumbled at Tori sat up in the bed and stretched. But when he checked the alarm itself, it only showed Saturday. Or, as his phone said it, "today."

"Uh, actually I think my phone is messed up. Says today is Saturday, even though yesterday was Saturday. That's weird," he started scrolling around the other apps he had. He went on the news app and saw the article listed at the top on the "Your Interests" section. "Drawkland's Base Corps set to play Scootalove City in Round of 16 elimination game" it read. He tried refreshing the page, but nothing changed.

"My whole phone is borked, my news app is still showing the stuff from yesterday," he said again. By now, Tori had moved to pick her phone off of the other bedside table and look through it.

"Don't freak out, but mine is saying the same thing. Says it's still Saturday for some reason," Tori replied, closely regarding her screen.

"Did we just like ... dream last night? Really vividly or something? At the .. same time?" Travis said, not clearly not believing his own words as they came out of his mouth. His tongue felt dry and he had a funny feeling in his stomach. This was REALLY weird.

"Hey, where's my quarterfinals shirt? Didn't we put it on that chair after last night?" she asked suddenly, pointing to the corner of the room where the now-bare lounge chair was situated. Travis stumbled out of bed to investigate. He looked behind the chair, under it, all around it, before shaking his head. It was nowhere to be seen.

"Okay, this is officially really weird. Really, really weird," Tori stepped out of bed herself to look at her luggage bag. No trace of the shirt was found. Travis was busy looking though his own bag.

"Look," he said, pulling his Base Corps replica jersey and casual jeans out of his bag, "These haven't been worn. They were packed in there neatly like they were when I packed the bag before the trip. They weren't in my hamper bag. What the hell?!"

"Okay ... let's just get some breakfast and figure out what the deal is."

Minutes later, the two were dressed in the clothes they had supposedly worn yesterday, and were in the lobby for their complimentary breakfast. The scene was eerily familiar. The TV on the sports channel was repeating the same phrases they had said yesterday. The same people sitting at the same tables with the same plates. The same waffle maker was clearly burning its contents as a young pony hurried over to retrieve his waffle.

As Travis walked past the bowls of fruit, he went to grab an apple and hesitated.

"Remember when I complained about the apples being gross and sandy yesterday?" he asked Tori. She nodded and he continued, "I wonder if they're the same."

Sure enough, when they sat down to eat, at the same table with the same coffee spill blotch on the corner, he bit into his apple and grimaced.

"Yup. Same dumb texture."




They decided to go sightseeing again, despite the fact that they'd already been everywhere they meant to go. It was more to ascertain the weirdness of the repeated day they'd been experience than to see the sights. Sure enough, the first place they went to (foothills of Mt. Harmony) had the same tour group with the same people asking the same questions to the same guide with the same answers. After the first place they went they decided to return to the hotel. Besides, the main attraction of the day was of course, the game.

"I still can't wrap my head around it. Yesterday seemed so real. Like I vividly remember everything being the same as it was, and you do too! But nobody else seems to be acting like anything is off," Travis said as they made their way to the metro to head to the stadium.

"I agree," Tori said, "Would there be anyway to confirm it without people looking at us crazy?"

"I dunno ..." Travis rubbed his chin, "Well yesterday they had a break day before the final game, right? So maybe we ask somebody how the game was yesterday, and if they correct us saying it was two days ago, then we know something is just up with us, right?"

"That could work. Let's ask a fan when we get to the stadium."

Sure enough, when the couple got to their seats, they asked the man sitting next to Travis (who interrupted their conversation the 'previous' day) what he thought of the game.

"Well, I'm sure you mean two days ago, but yes, I think Drawkland played really well under pressure, and that Serena Hearns bat flip walkoff home run was incredible. This whole series has had some amazing late-game moments."

"Yeah, haha, those late game moments certainly are wild," Travis mumbled, and gave Tori a meaningful look. Whatever was up, it was just them.

The game progressed, again, in an eerily familiar way. The same pitches, the same runs, the same Drawkian dominance. The end of the game approached, and they both knew what was coming. When Rachel Atlink came up to bat in the top of the ninth, Travis proclaimed loudly, "Oh yeah, watch her take this first pitch for a popup to first base to end the inning." Sure enough, that exact play happened right in front of them.

"Nice call," the man sitting next to Travis said, and Travis nodded with a little smirk, "Let's just say I have a gift."

The ninth inning also progressed the same way, the tension rising and the Unicorns scoring nearly at will. Eventually the fateful situation was there once again. Runners on first and second, no outs, 10-8. John Avidan up to bat. Travis and Tori had not been as conversation this time. They sat in eerie anticipation for the moment the game would end. Would it be the same? Despite their weird day, overshadowing the game itself, this moment still was thick with anxiety.

"Ready for this triple play?" Travis nervously chuckled. Tori nodded, "It better be!" she responded. A few people around them who heard scoffed and shook their heads.

Then it happened. Avidan catches the edge of the pitch, it bounces to shortstop, and Hearns barely catches the edge of it. Tag out, force out, force out at first. The game is over. The crowd is deafening, but Travis and Tori could hardly hear it. They were both in awe. Everything had been identical. The day, however it did, repeated itself. They quietly looked at each other, grabbed their things, and left the stadium. There would be no rushing the field for them tonight.

"Let's grab a quarterfinals shirt on the way out though," Tori said, "Just to make sure." That they did, and when they got back to the hotel, there was no celebrating or love-making. They took showers, and got ready for bed.

"I'm putting the shirt over the TV here," Tori proclaimed, graciously draping the white shirt over the TV across from the bed, "Just in case."

"I'm turning all my alarms off too," Travis said, making a point to go to his alarm app and turn off all the alarms, even the ones he usually has for work when he's at home. "Hopefully we'll blissfully accidentally wake up at noon tomorrow," he said with a slight grin. Tori nodded and snuggled up next to him, and they drifted off to a fitful sleep. Their wakeup call the following morning wasn't very welcoming.

Here we are, starting the 50th World Baseball Classic! It’s amazing, especially when I consider how long I have been the manager of this team and how the Cassadagan Association for Baseball continues to show their faith in me. We have gone far in many Classics, doing everything but win the championship together. That has allowed us to get the #1 ranking, but I know that it does not really feel like something to be excited about. When I took this position, it was my intention to bring a championship back to Cassadaigua, and despite those close calls, I have still failed to do so. With each of those misses, I am aware that the amount of people that would like to see me removed from the position continues to increase. For the most part, most of you have my back, and I am grateful for that. For those who want to see me gone, all I ask of you is that you continue to support the team and our players, and save that disapproval for me, personally.

I am excited to see my native homeland, Super-Llamaland, now back in the tournament for the second time since returning. I will be hoping that they do well from a distance, but my focus will never waver from the Fillies. Good to see Schiltzberg back, even if they have not adapted to the current style of play. Speaking of that, I know that some of you would love to see me stop relying on analytics so much. There is a love/hate relationship for this, but I do believe that it is the best way to manage a game, except for controlling starting pitchers. I feel that since you do have the five best starting pitchers in the country on your rotation, then you need to have confidence in them, and let them pitch until they begin to fatigue, and not just because someone is about to face a lineup three times over. We have a good bullpen for those situations, making me completely thrilled with the team that we are bringing to the Classic.

This is a challenging group, but we are off to a 3-0 start thus far. They have been battles, much like we have expected. The upcoming showdown with Tikariot is going to be very interesting, and I am excited to start the game. There are six meetings, and both them and Daskel are going to allow us to be playoff tested when that time comes by playing in some intense group stage matches. We won’t look past the others in the group in the process, however.

The Pandas start out 2-1 with big games coming up

The Pandas have played three games so far in the 50th World Baseball Classic, and they have been against the three lowest ranked nations in our group. While a 2-1 record would be exceptional under normal circumstances we all would have preferred starting out 3-0 especially with Ko-oren and Terre Septentrionale fast approaching.

Hosting Velarland at Real Kohnhead Dressing Park one of the two unranked teams in our group a win was definitely expected especially if we want to make the next round of the WBC. Advancement in the WBC would be the first time a Kohnheadian team has ever advanced to the second round of a big five sporting event (WBC, WC, WCoH, WB, IBC) and we did not start out well.

In the first inning with our ace Ralphie Bloggs on the mound we would surrender two runs quickly as Velarland looked to pull off the early upset. I don't know whether it was nerves or what but Bloggs looked quite uncomfortable for the first part of the game surrendering another run in the third inning as we fell behind 3-0. Bloggs was pulled midway through the third as Jasmine Millington would come in for relief pitching most of the fifth and the entire sixth but heading into the bottom of the sixth it was still 3-0 Velarland.

We would get one run back in the bottom of the sixth as Stuart Dorsey would pull one deep into right field, we hadn't even been doing too bad hitting wise but stranding a combined five runners in scoring position heading into this inning doomed us. While Dorsey gave us the run, we still had to score a few more and that was assuming our bullpen could hold them off for longer. As it turned out they could as Nela Fowler pitched an unspectacular but effective 7th inning and Melissa Berger got through the 8th.

However our offense refused to score in these two innings and heading into the top of the ninth we were down 3-1 still as hope was dwindling. Maddy Lane would make her first appearance for the National Team with a 1-2-3 inning but we needed our bats to come alive. Come alive they did as Cecilia Dickerson led off the inning with a double into the gap. Dorsey however would pop out before Craft walked to put runners on first and second for Artur Wagstaff. Wagstaff would single and Dickerson raced around third to make it a one run game. Suddenly the winning run was on first base, as Helena Mata walked on four straight to put Wagstaff to second and Craft to third. Lucca Hahn hit a single scoring Craft and Wagstaff raced around from second as Velarland attempted to throw him out at the plate, it was not in time and Kohnhead would get the walk off win to start off the WBC.

Despite allowing two runs, Fletcher Crouch was brillant in this one going 7.2 innings as his fastball was blistering and his changeup proved to be effective. He however is currently a two pitch player and the couple of times he tried a curve and slider they did not go well. Facing NJ Dublin he got the better of us for all of his six innings before being interestingly pulled with Inner AngianaUsordia up 2-0 heading into the top of the 7th. The 7th was when our bats would finally wake up.

Monicall Ratliff would get her first homer of the WBC sending a three run one deep to center that barely cleared the fence scoring Cherry and Hahn as well. Stuart Dorsey would follow her up with his second homerun of the tournament this one going to right field once again against Lane Rahoveca who had given up all four runs. In the eighth we would get another run when Artur Wagstaff singled Sandra Craft in from third after Craft had hit a triple which would prove to be the final run in a 5-2 win.

This game back at Real Kohnhead Dressing Park saw us host Philamer Isle who were a surprising 1-1 after upsetting Terre Septentrionale in their second game which told us that they were better than their unranked rating would indicate. Sure enough despite us taking an early 1-0 lead after a Jessie Cherry solo homerun our lead would fade over the next eight innings as Philamer Isle slowly but surely took back the lead from Sharon Mclellan who did not look very good.

Cha Yong-Ho the Philamer Isle starter on the other hand was excellent going just under 8 innings and only allowing that first inning run to Jessie Cherry. Slowly our visions of a perfect 3-0 start began to fade as Philamer Isle had a four run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. We tried to pull some last inning magic like in the game against Velarland but they finished us after a two run inning winning 5-3 to drop us to two wins and one loss.


That 2-1 record is good enough for third in our group's standings as we prepare to host the afore mentioned Terre Septentrionale who are ranked 17th but are coming off of a disappointing 1-2 start but just blasted Velarland 5-0.

It was an interesting feeling to see the name Norrhem being drawn for the World Baseball Classic 50. Never before had a Norrhemian team participated in any international sports and to be able to begin this journey in such a prestigious event and even more so its 50th anniversary edition felt good.

My name is Anders Stefansson and I am the managing director of Norrhems Baseball, the Norrhemian Baseball Federation and as I have been with the national team since its inception, I figured I would follow the team throughout the competition to see how everything would go down. To start with the draw, it was discouraging to see the names that were drawn into our group, Pripet Socialist Republic, ranked 39th, the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, 16th rank and then Drawkland, 13th-ranked on top of that, making the already unlikely path to the knockout stages seem impossible.

For our first game we at least did not have to leave Rushmore as the Pripet Socialist Republic was our first opponent. And to be honest, things did go as expected, losing 2-6, but despite that it was an exhilarating feeling to travel, the realization that it was real to be able to play. It also showed, though, that this is a completely different beast compared to our local competitions. Vastly better pitching, harder hits, faster runners, some of the guys told me that they felt like a high school team trying to go against a major league team and that they were really, really nervous. But it is a learning experience.

Then we flew to Squidroidia and the team was as if someone had injected them with experience because they were a lot calmer and it looks like coach Hammarsson managed to get into the guys' heads, because they were so much more focused throughout the whole game. Andreas (Rosenblad) with the RBI for Adrian (Lestander) brought us the first lead in an international game ever right in the first inning. But then in the fourth inning Jacob (Bjarnstad) was on second base and (Sture Holmgard) just hit the ball perfectly! Right from the hit I knew that the ball was gone and boom - the first Norrhemian homerun ever! Otto (Almgren) also pitched incredibly well and then Arnar (Skogsgard) and Hans (Arnesson) kept Squidroidia off the score board and after that last strike it felt like a dream! We had won our first game and even with a shutout!

To be really honest here, when we signed up for the WBC our expectations were absolutely zero. We had no idea where we stood in the international competitions, if we were any good, but we had to assume that other, bigger countries were way ahead of us, so this win in itself already surpassed anything we could have hoped for. And I really got goosebumps when we walked into the Globen in Brattsholt for our first home match, filled to the roof with 17,000 people, it almost felt like we had won the WBC, they were so loud and everything. But then I thought that we were about to play against The Royal Kingdom of Quebec, 16th in the world and they've been around for ages. Most people said that we should use the game to learn from one of the greats to see how we could improve our game.

And then seven innings without any runs, Håkan (Swärdh) pitched better than I ever saw him pitch, and then he struck out another three in the eighth... Yes, I know, why was a starter still pitching in the eighth inning, Hammarsson tried to get him off the mound, but he steadfastly refused to. And when you'd look at him, you could almost see the adrenaline coursing through his veins, so he just left them on. Then Saugstad was on second, Andreasson out. Huselius hits the ball far into right field and Kim just ran for his life, sliding in for the 1-0. They caught Birger trying to go for second, so we were two out. Jacob (Bjarnstad) swung at a sinker, then fouled out three times in a row, but you know the sweet spot of a baseball bat? The one where you hit it and you feel right away that you got it? Yeah, that was one of those. Right along the foul line and they almost caught it as it came down, but it went just over the glove and it was 2-0. And then Håkan went out there and he was like in a trance. A curveball, two sliders and then a two-seam fastball and then we had won! We had beaten Quebec! I have never seen the Globen this ecstatic! It was an absolutely incredible feeling!

So now we're fourth in the table, but the other three teams have the same record. The atmosphere in the team is beyond electric. Håkan has asked the coach, if he could pitch against Drawkland, too, but Coach said no. So yeah, Drawkland is next and even though some people area already letting their euphoria get away, because they are talking about beating them. We're already walking on clouds, but we can't expect it to continue, but to be honest - one can dream. And we had thought the same before the Quebec game. Or the other two games, so who knows, maybe the gods will be with us.

Game 1

Well, no better team to start a classic against other than an unranked team to keep the hopes up, right? Valanora is a team that teams to have not much recent history in the classic, although is known as a very powerful nation in other sports. Valanora got out to a very fast start in the game, and the Kalactanian pitching struggled very much at the start of the game. A 2 run first inning for the Eternal Empire set them up on a good start against us, and Valanoran hitters were able to take hanging curveballs from Josh Perez for a ride, which included a 2 run home run in the 4th inning of the game. The Kalactanians only 2 runs of the game would come off of a hit to left center field on a change-up from the Vanorian pitcher. Despite this, the Vanorian offense would still torture the poor pitching from the Kalactanian team, and would grab 3 straight innings with a run in it against them. The game would not end in good fashion for the Kalactanian team, as they would not be able to manage a win over Valanora. This loss against an unranked team could be one of the worst losses for the Kalactanians, and this may be one of the main teams that could try and keep us out of the playoff run, if they play well enough. Coach Joe Douglas commented after the game that “it was a very poor performance by our guys.” And also that “I hope we are able to improve upon this, because this will not be a good classic if we keep this up.”

Joe Douglas was clearly right when he said that if the Kalactanians kept that up they wouldn’t do well enough in the classic. It took every ounce of energy the Kalactanians has in them to beat the Sarzonian National Team, which would be off of a few big hits by Kalactanian players. In the top of the second inning, Bobby Williams was able to get on base and steal second, and get himself into scoring position for Nate Johnson. Johnson would strike out, although the power hitter Adam Torres was able to get up with 2 outs. Torres hit a shot to right field, and it went over the wall for a Kalactanian home run! The hit out some momentum into the Kalactanian team, although Wendell Barkley would strike out on the next pitch. 2-0. The Sarzonian Speedster Ian Danielson was able to make it home on a play at the plate to score the first, and what would be the only run of the game for the Sarzonian squad. The 4th inning would be a very strong one for the Kalactanian team, as Alex Douglas was able to drive in loaded bases with an RBI double to make the score 5-1. That would go not be the finals score of the game, as the Kalactanians were able to secure a key win in what might be against the toughest squad in the group.

Falisiand International Baseball Recap

We've won our 2 games out of our last 3 games, lets recap that
Kyronn Burnett was on the mound in the first game, where Falisiand wouldn't score any runs but would allow a run in the top of the 2nd for them to lose their first game 1-0 against the unranked Indusse. A tough start, but our pitching did rebound after that start to show that we can stay resiliant. Kyronn Burnett struck out 7 players and allowed 2 walks through 7 innings.

In the next game, Xerxes Anscom was on the mound and the ranked 27th team, Equestria, where they scored first with a run in the 3rd, but then in the top of the fourth, Kodey Kenton hit a homerun to tie the game at 1-1, then in the 6th, Ryan Grantham hit a 3 run triple to make it 4-1, then in the top of the 9th, Warren Mathews hit a leado off home run to make it 5-1, then in the bottom of the 9th, Equestria tried to stage a rally and score 3 runs off of Kieron Blackburn, but we put in Marvin Gill and he closed them out Xerxes Anscom finished with 13 Ks, 1 BB, and went through 7 innings of pitching

Rufus Hammond was on the mound in the last game, where they scored first in the 4th inning, and then scored again to make it 2-0, until the bottom of the 5th, where Kodey Kenton hit a grand slam to make it 4-2, and then Leo Robles hit a homer to make it 5-2, then in the bottom of the 7th, Mason Mckinney hit a home run to make it 8-2, then in the bottom of the 8th, Richard Mcbride hit a home run to make it 9-2 and that would be the final score. Rufus Hammond had 6.1 innings of pitching with 6 Ks and 2 BBs.

”Today, Sicoutimont has become a true socialist paradise thanks to the revolutionary leadership of Supreme Leader Alphonse Pomeroy. The Supreme Leader has guided the people to great advancement within a short period of time, and developed the Sicoutian spirit into something harder than even steel. Furthermore, through his reforms aimed at building a tradition of environmentalism within the youth of our nation, the people of Sicoutimont are the happiest in the world and live great, sustainable lives. This is the truth of the idea of national durability.”

Ignace Tremaux finished reading the pamphlet that accompanied their studies of On the idea of National Durability Every Sicoutian was given a copy of the book when he or she turned 18, and while for most people it was immediately tucked away on a shelf, there were some who knew it from front to back. It was said that to join the Sicoutian People’s Army, new recruits had to memorize the passages related to its ideas on military strength and national defence. And of course, the man standing at the front of the room in uniform of the GVRT knew everything about it.

The commissar stood up again. “Has everyone finished reading today’s passages?” Nods from the various people gathered in the room. “Perfect. What are the core tenets of Comrade Alphonse Pomeroy’s idea of National Durability?”

A hand rose in the back of the room. “Self-sustainability, self-reliance, environmentalism and socialism.”

“Good work, Comrade Labelle. Any other ideas?”

Ignace put his hand up. “The strength of the Sicoutian people through our revolutionary history, dating back to our founding, and the spirit of the guerillas of the Southern Rushmori War.”

“You’re getting there, Comrade Tremaux, however, those are some of the influences that impacted the Chairman during his development of the ideology. Can you tell me why national durability has been such a success within Sicoutimont?”

Another hand from the back of the room. “Comrade Pomeroy crafted the ideology with the various characteristics of the Sicoutian people in mind, namely hard work as a national value. Through his Sicoutian Patriotic Workers’ Front, he truly brought the people together with one goal in mind, and a new unity.”

“Correct, Comrade Girard. He has united our people in heart and mind, truly focused on the goal of building up our country and turning it into a world-renowned paradise. Our people have placed their absolute trust in him, and we are seeing today in our homeland the success we are building together.”

The Commissar scanned his audience, then said: “Comrades, you performed well during today’s learning and studying sessions. Comrades Girard and Labelle understood the material perfectly and were able to expand upon it. They were quite successful. Comrades Tremaux and Pernet, I recommend you spend a bit more time studying Comrade Pomeroy’s work before our next meeting. It will surely prove invaluable for you.” Ignace nodded - being called out every so often was not a problem, however, it meant that you needed to be on top of your game at either the monthly self-critique session or the next Political Day, or risk having the Commissar report you to the authorities for ‘extra ideological training.’ Finally, the Commissar concluded: “Thank you for your participation today. I remind you that next Wednesday will be our self-critique session, and that Political Day is not for another month. Long live Sicoutimont, Long live Alphonse Pomeroy!”

The attendees repeated that phrase, before picking up their belongings and leaving the office. The good thing about Political Day was it meant you normally got off work two hours earlier than normal. The sun was in the sky now, as Ignace stepped out into the Place Alphonse-Pomeroy, looking at its various sights - the Workers’ Front Headquarters towering above the square, uniformed guards directing bus traffic, and a batch of recruits from the Sicoutian People’s Army practicing parade in the square.

Ignace had once been one of those recruits, as were all Sicoutians at the age of 18. Five mandatory years in the army, after which you either did another 4 or were recommended for a university program. Some recruits would end up in it for life, while others would end up joining the Garde Vert-Rouge des Travailleurs (GVRT), the national militia organization. Ignace overheard bits of their song, one he remembered well from his time training - with lyrics about how through the Workers' Front, the youth of Sicoutimont had received 'steel-hard strength' to 'fight through even the darkest storm.'

His reminiscence was broken, however, as he spotted his supervisor at the Department of Sport and Recreation walking quickly across the square - he was coming from the Party Headquarters, which could only mean something important was brewing. Suddenly, he saw Ignace.

“Ignace! Ignace! I need to speak with you.”

Ignace could pretend he didn’t hear him - his bus was just arriving, after all. But he was already off early, and despite everything around it his actual job - reporting on the national sports scene - could be quite interesting. So, Ignace walked over to his boss, smiling.

“Comrade Corriveau, how are you today?”

“No time for that today, Ignace. This is.... Something I never thought would happen in my lifetime. Let’s go, to my office.”

The men rushed back into the building, up the elevator, and entered the office of Louis Corriveau. A career bureaucrat, Corriveau was someone Ignace had plenty of respect for - someone who had worked his way up the system over the years, and not one who was given a job by family connections. Ignace had a family connection - just enough to get him a decent job, nothing more, nothing less - but had also worked hard during his military days and in academia. Now, however, Ignace was just wondering what was up.

“So, Louis. What’s going on? I saw you coming from the Party Headquarters.”

“Yes, I was speaking with Comrade Pomeroy.”

Ignace was taken back - no-one from the Department of Sport ever spoke to the Supreme Leader, as far as he could remember. Sport had its place within Sicoutimont, but Pomeroy was quite hands-off in terms of how it actually ran - he had more important things to worry about.

“And?”

“Read this.” Corriveau handed Ignace a memo.

”Party Colleagues,

It has been brought to our attention that the 50th edition of the World Baseball Classic is to be held this upcoming year, in Cassadaigua. Our neighbours to the west, of course, have been quite clear in wanting our nation to make its return to the competition. The great success of our baseball teams in the past is, of course, dear to the hearts of every Sicoutian, and this will in fact mark the 48th anniversary of our silver medal winning team. Even more fitting, that tournament also took place in Cassadaigua. These great memories, however, date to before our Revolution. The Sicoutian youth know the names Boullion Carvier, Loic St-Ignace and Fidel Sanchez, however, they do not relate them with our Party or our Revolution. I therefore recommend that we participate in World Baseball Classic 50. Baseball is a thriving sport in our country, and we surely have a great deal of talented players eager to represent Sicoutimont. Certainly, we do not expect much from our return at first, but we must all strive with single-minded unity to develop a world-class baseball program once again.

Guariday had the look of somewhere a messiah might be born. Not only was it very far to the west (and the south), but a multitude of faiths thrived amid ancient trees and nearly-as-ancient traditions. Alfred and Buck had just about gotten used to dodging footbridge traffic from above and being met with cold glares from locals when they asked to see more of the famed trees. It was enough that they subsided, in some cases far from human vision. That would have to be enough, especially for mere tourists.

What's more, a fairly new sect had found adherents there, too. "I am Shyamala Desai, pledged unto the Glorious Seraphim," said the young woman whose house seemed as close as any to where the star had faded below the horizon. "Who might you be?"

"I might be Alfred Gasparin," said Alfred, and sensing his colleague was in no mood for humor, added, "but he's definitely Buck Fuchs."

"And what brings you here?"

"We heard you had a daughter, and we wanted to congratulate you and wish her well."

"And where," said Shyamala sharply, "did you hear that?"

Alfred glanced around the room helplessly. A young infant was sleeping in a cradle. A few cards sat on the table, and a banner reading Welcome, Viroopa! hung above. Moreover, Shyamala herself had a silhouette highly correlated with a woman whose uterus had recently contained a developing fetus.

"A little bird told me," said Buck. "There are a lot of them in those trees."

"Viroopa isn't old enough to accept your well-wishes. Come back later and maybe you'll have better luck. Eh, Viroopa?"

"If we had gifts," Alfred said slowly, "would you be willing to accept them on her behalf? Until she's old enough, I mean?"

"What sort of gifts?" Shyamala asked, then went on before they could answer. "You're foreigners, aren't you? Not from around here."

"We are indeed."

Her eyes lit up. "Did you bring the sacred wumfish?"

"Come again?" said Buck.

"The wumfish! The blessed aquatic beast whose meat transports us beyond the confines of our flesh! Surely even little Viroopa is not too young to treasure the majesty of the holy wumfish. First Games Complete,

The United Pink States baseball team made history as they competed in an international competition for the first time. The nation has never attempted to play others in sports before, whether on this planet, or out on earth. Manager Nicole Meehan joked that, “We might be the team that Sonnel needs if our planet is going to have success in the World Baseball Classic.” That was obviously meant as a playful jab at the nation of Drawkland, the predominant sporting nation on the planet that has had a rough time in this competition historically. Drawkland recently hosted World Baseball Classic 48, and it was exciting to see so many of the great nations of the world make their way to various stadiums that country has to offer. Nova Anglicana ended up winning the championship, topping fellow pinklanders Cassadaigua in the process. Citizens of the UPS were interested in getting to know people from all over the planet known as earth, but were interested in the Cassadagans particularly, since they “seemed to be like us in some ways”.

The UPS was assigned to Group 9, putting them in a tough collection of teams that featured Banija, one of the elite teams in the game today, as well as Super-Llamaland, a five time champion. The latter of which took a few competitions off, so are looking to rebuild their ranking right now. They would be the first opponent for our team, which has not yet decided on a nickname to call themselves, and played well in a 6-4 loss. Then, in their first game home, the team pulled off a shocking upset, topping Banija 2-1. Sources say that Banija may have been a little jet lagged from the trip, while others felt the UPS received the benefit of somewhat questionable umpiring. Either way, that improved our record to 1-1, which was followed up by a 5-4 win on earth in Anthor.

Manager Meehan isn’t going to get too excited yet, but stated, “It is comforting to win these games, especially beating Banija. Next time we play Banija, they will be out to get revenge on us, so that will be difficult on us, but I am really proud of the team and the way that we played. We might have a shot in this group to surprise some folks.”

Skyline trotted up to the batter's box as Duta Condé stared them down. The Banijan ace had almost certainly pitched to a pony at some point in his career, considering the proximity and ties between Banija and Equestria. The element of surprise wasn't going to be a factor here.

The pegasus did their good-luck habit--tapping the bat onto the plate 3 times, an eighth note followed by two sixteenth notes--and settled in on the left side of the plate. Bat firmly in the specialized mouthguard any pony batter wouldn't be caught dead without in the last 70 years. Xaaf Geele said something behind the plate, but fuck if Skyline heard it over the pounding of their heart. Condé was winding up.

CRACK

They'd been just a hair late on the swing, but had barreled up the opening challenge fastball with aplomb. Bailo Suso immediately drew a bead on it, pivoting on his right heel and bolting off towards the left-center wall. Cayper Kandeh sprinted laterally to cover a ricochet--can't let the ball bounce around the outfield with speed like that on the basepaths.

Skyline was rounding first as Suso spared a moment to double-check the arc; yep, it was angling over the wall. He'd have to attempt a robbery.

The Karditani third base coach is waving them home, because they'd make it all the way at this point if the ball ever decided to land. Suso braces his jump with a hop, puts his right hand out to stabilize on the wall, and reaaaaaaaaaches up--

The ball clears his glove by two inches. Skyline is already rounding third, too late to notice the umps or the third base coach signal that it was gone. Geele wisely steps well clear of the plate as the pony gallops past at top speed. They careen to a halt just short of the backstop, giving the fans in the expensive seats a small fright. The Wild Kards were... leading. Against the fourth-ranked team in the multiverse. Away. In their first international baseball match in nineteen years. After one pitch.

Gale was able to keep the team from mobbing the field to collapse on Skyline, but the dogpile commenced immediately after they cleared the steps. She blinked back a tear.

WBC 50: Daskies to a rough start at WBC 50

-- The Daskies played their first three games of the 50 edition of the WBC. Many fans were expectful for their first game against Tikariot, a well known nation for Daskelian baseball after many matchups in the last IBS. The adult team fell through, with a painful 11-1 loss, with a lone run from Oshimura into the ninth inning.

"We're still sorting out the situation without Shintaro" said Reizei to the press after the game "He was a great part of the game calling in the team, but we hope to get everything together promptly. An and Sakamoto kantoku are working really hard with us to achieve the perfect equilibrium in the field. Please stand with us"

It seems like Reizei's words payed out in the next games, where Daskel won one and lost one. Team Daskel scored 6 against Thea Liters team at the Daikyuu, with a big performance of the top of the lineout. The third game had Nagai Ken versus the feared Cassadaigua, an even after a loss, the team keep the game interesting for the most part, just one run behind their opponent.

"We totally believe we can do it better. I can do it better" Eidome Yōichi said, the player who replaced the big schoes of Shintaro behind the mask "This WBC format is demanding. A lot of traveling and not much rest, but we will endure"

Team Daskel will play their next games against Carung and Oscioru, finishing against Tikariot in a difficult and decisive game 6. We're sitting 4th into the standings. Until then, please keep cheering for your Daskies!

Bottom of the 10th, Game 5 of Squidroidia's World Baseball Classic game at home against Drawkland in Newton. Drawkland leads 4 runs to 3.

"And here comes up Franklin Bell, the #51 for the Base Corps. Had a good 9th inning stopping Team Squidroidia from drilling a big win in the 9th, and here he is, bottom of the 10th. Stop the team from scoring and Drawkland walk away with the game."

The first guy up in the batting order for this bottom of the inning was Himura Yuichi, right fielder. He steps onto the plate and dusts off the plate itself, before driving home a single.

Left fielder Kajiwara Kuniyuki stepped up next, and after 2 balls and a strike hit it just enough for another single.

"It could be a situation of loading bases for Squidroidia, Kamoto Benkei could get another single and load the bases, but I don't think Bokkai would have enough energy for a line drive grand slam."

Benkei got caught with a popup by Chan Ford. First out for Squidroidia, and Maki Bokkai didn't make things easier. He did get a single, but that was off of 4 runs. Third baseman Iha Naomichi stood up and after a strike, fired in a hit.

"That goes up, but down too fast, evading the Drawk outfield, that will be a RBI single and a tie ball game for Squidroidia as Anzai prepares to take the mound."

And Sano did. Out of the dugout at Newton Baseball Field he went, making a trip to home plate as he readies his bat. He could feel the pep bands playing, but in all actuality they didn't. Bell stared him down. He stared Bell down. It was a duel. Just one run and you beat the thirteenth best team in baseball, and right after beating the sixteenth best too.

"Sano Anzai with the chance to win the game and boost Squidroidia's rank after a tough first 3 games...

Crack!

"And it's to right field for Sano Anzai, it's got the distance, Smith can't get to it, and it is OUT OF HERE! SANO ANZAI WITH THE WALKOFF GRAND SLAM IN THE BOTTOM OF THE 10TH INNING, AND TEAM SQUIDROIDIA MAKE IT 2 FROM 2!"

The squid in centerfield lit up as the crowd roared. A grand slam to end the game. You can't write a story like that when you beat a top seeded opponent. It just comes when the baseball gods feel like you have a story to share in a tight as hell group like the groupo number 5. Everyone's 3-3 after they did the deed against Hicaña, the entire group running 6 wide with little to no room separating 2nd from 5th. Meanwhile Pripet are high up there and Hicaña... They lost by 3 runs.

But hey, someone said we beat Drawkland, so hey, why not do a grand slam to silence the Base Corps?

Squidroidians prefer it if you don't spend money in Inkopolis Tower, the capital city's main tourist trap. It costs way too much to buy a miniature replica and you can easily do one at home. Besides, I heard that the miniatures were built in Brazilistan...
