Running Up That Hill

PART 10 (2/3) (38 and 2/3) - Just Like A River Does

‘A good point,’ sighed Asher, nodding along because of how much sin he has gathered from smoking without her presence, but with her awareness. ‘One does think more about losing someone dear than a political change, especially when one behaves ala. Chamberlain-’
‘Right there. Even right now you are exactly falling into that habit. Love is good to the degree that you keep yourself sane, but beyond that, you need something else to further propel yourself into. That’s where you need to find what’s ideal for you. Tell me, have you thought of following your father’s path?’

‘Frankly, I did think about it,’ Asher responded, as he thought out the next sentence in mind. He knew what he was going to say the very next moment would be very important, and that there’s no other way to describe it under the dim lights. Should I chase for something bigger...or be content with what I have and who I love?Asher thought as he slowly rolled his left shoulder. It was such a simple one, one that most of us would answer with a flat yes or no, but Asher knew he needed few more seconds than whatever he was given.

Maybe I am feeling the same way my father did back then, Asher thought as he quietly picked up the towel on the rack and washed his hand. Gosh, Eileen must be waiting for me. By now, he was able to hear the sound of a ska band, one of maybe four or five in all of Sicoutimont, playing, and she must be waiting for him. Now, his few seconds were expiring far too quickly, and he could feel the sense of urgency as he looked over to Arsene Kim, who’s slowly combing his hair.

‘But right now may not be the time,’ replied Asher, deciding to pull the trigger of his internal glock that was checking the clock of decisions inside his head. ‘I did think about it, and yes, you’re right that I am not a journalist by trade. I always knew I wasn’t and will never really be one, especially after all the rumours that were frankly as close to truth as it can get- but I believe that I’m better off on the background for now.’

‘Good, because I didn’t expect you to say yes either,’ chuckled Arsene with a peculiar smile. ‘It’s true. Politics, without Etudes on the Etudes Politiques, or without Hak on the Jeongchihak, isn’t for everybody. We all know that. But that’s not naturally predetermined, by the set of luck and fortune, and has never worked like that. We all make decisions and stick by it. That’s why at some point, you have to decide your turf and run the long course with it.’
‘Yes. And what would that be, in your unrelated views per se?’

‘Straightforward, ecrivain. You’ve always been more of a writer than an academic, an orator than a politician. Everybody on the circuit knows that because of your father’s presence with the Opposition caucus. It’s like the style may be excellent and professional in every bit, but not in the manners desired by the clerks. I think you know that better yourself.’

Asher nodded, as the old man continued. ‘Please do not worry, however, as I think you’ll do well. But at some point you do need to shift towards somewhere bigger, greater and farther...as they often said to public knowledge, Coxwell Park is beautiful around June. Is that true?’
‘Always.’ Asher smiled, trying to hide his nerves.

‘There you go. I think that's your answer then.’ Arsene responded, before giving Asher a nice pat. Unlike just a moment ago, however, he was smiling this time. 'Good luck.' That’s all he said, before the party leader left the washroom and into the crowds. Asher winked himself twice with a smile, adjusting his glasses once, before walking away once more.

Located just outside of the St. Croix’s campus of green and gloom, the Lebel-Acosta hotel was more or less complete with the campus. The mourners had now dispersed to the rest of the campus and the city, taking with them the loss and the remnants of whatever the emotions they had held from the legendary Slavist, a pillar of the history faculty, up in the cool Maytime air of Quebec City once again.

Heo Dong-Soo always liked dealing with crowds and how manipulable they could be at times, but today he had agreed with himself to stay quiet with himself, as he continued to talk to Gavin de Ramaut. He just happened to be staying at the same hotel and with the itinerary meaning that he didn’t have to go back to Cornwall until tomorrow night, he had decided to stay up until late.

Groundball Day, Part 7

Postby Drawkland » Wed Nov 18, 2020 6:50 pm

Groundball Day

beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ...

Travis jolted awake, sitting up instantly. Tori did as well, though not as drastically.

"FUCK! Oh my God! How ... oh my God ..." Travis yelled, breathing heavily. Tori didn't seem to be as bothered. Travis turned to her and grabbed her by the arm. "Tori! What the fuck was that?! Why did you do that? I thought we were gonna die! This is so fucked up! I don't even know what to say right now!"

Once Travis had gotten the hysterics out of his system, Tori quietly responded. "I knew we weren't going to die. I knew we'd be okay."

"How did you know that? How? Weren't not in a movie right now, you couldn't possibly have known for sure we'd be okay!"

"I knew." She replied simply, and the comprehension slowly dawned upon Travis.

"You ... you've done this before? You tried to kill yourself? When? Why?"

"This situation has been driving me insane, Trav. I think you know how crazy this was making me. We've been in here for weeks now with no sign of getting out. It was two nights ago, I think. I was tossing and turning, and I couldn't fall asleep. You had already fallen asleep, and I didn't wake you. I just couldn't get to sleep, and I don't think I wanted to. I got all caught up in my mind and my thoughts spiraled out of control and I just wondered if ... if there was another way out."

"Why didn't you wake me up?" Travis asked, sliding to be closer to her on the bed.

"I don't know what I was thinking. I guess I was thinking that you had more hope than me, and I didn't want to kill you just because I was going off the deep end. I didn't want to kill us both, I love you too much for that."

"I'm going to be honest here." Travis said slowly. "I think that's a fucked-up way of thinking."

"I agree. I'm serious, I was not feeling myself that night. I don't think I'd ever actually kill myself on such a whim like that, but after all this that had happened, combined with me being deliriously tired ... I just wanted to try it. So I snuck out of the room, and snuck up the stairwell to the top of the hotel. I got out onto the roof, pretty sure I tripped some sort of alarm, but I didn't care. I was at the top of the building for awhile, contemplating it all."

"Did anyone come to try and stop you?"

"I think eventually a custodian or security guy was coming up the stairs. I heard someone opening the door again and that's when I jumped off, and-" Tori stopped suddenly, tensing her muscles.

"And then what?"

"Well I woke up next to you, with that same stupid alarm going off. I instantly felt like a complete idiot. You don't know how glad I am that it didn't work."

"You're glad?"

"Yes. I realized as I was falling that even in this ridiculous hell loop we're stuck in, I'd rather live through this with you than die without you." Tori pulled Travis in and they hugged for a few minutes.

"That's really sweet, Tori. Thank you." Travis said, kissing his lover. They held each other for a few minutes before he spoke up again. "So wait a second. If you had tried to kill yourself the day before and regretted it, why did you do it again last night?"

"I ... kinda wanted to do it with you. To show that we can't even escape this with death. But I know you, you'd never agree to do something like that, so I had to force you into it."

"I'm not sure I'm really comfortable with you doing that ..." Travis said nervously. "You playing my emotions like that?"

"You're right, I shouldn't have done that." Tori confessed, "And I felt horrible the whole time I did it. But I felt that I had no other choice. I promise I won't do anything like that to you ever again. Especially once we get out of this."

"You really think we'll get out of this? You didn't seem so sure this past week or so."

"I'm sure now. I think you're right about the game being the key to why we're here. We just need to figure it out."

"This new confident Tori is starting to scare me more than the depressive Tori." Travis tried to lighten the mood. "What do you want to do at the game tonight then?"

"Honestly, I'd rather kill myself than go to the game tonight!" Tori replied with a cheeky grin. Travis didn't respond and her smile evaporated. "Too soon I guess?"

His stony expression couldn't last forever though, and he cracked a smile as well. "Okay fine, that was a good one. Seriously though, what should we do tonight?"

Two hours later, the couple were speeding along the streets of downtown Canterlot in a stolen sports car. Tori hadn't told Travis any of her plan for the day once they'd eaten breakfast and gotten dressed, and he still had no idea what she was going for when she led him a couple blocks away to a more expensive hotel. He was confused by what they were doing there, until they got to the valet parking lot.

"Wait, what are we doing here now?" Travis had asked, looking around at the parking lot devoid of people.

"Waiting for someone. Oh, here we go now," she said suddenly, and watched as a valet driver carefully brought a shiny sports car into the lot. As he pulled around the bend, Tori silently started walking to where he was about to park.

"Oh now wait a second, tell me you're not going full Grand Theft on me! Tori! Wait up!" Travis chased after her.

The young pony stepped out of the car and went to lock it, before Tori came in like a linebacker in full sprint and took him to the ground. By Drawkian standards, Tori was a bit shorter than average and didn't have a lot of muscle, but compared to a random twenty-something from the Equestrian States, she absolutely leveled him.

"Travis! Get in the car! He hasn't locked it yet!" she yelled, trying to wrestle the keys from the kid.

"Oh my- do you need help? Do you want me to-"

"Just get in!" she yelled more forcefully, giving the pony an elbow to the face. She made a triumphant cry and pushed herself off the ground, before kicking the young pony while he was still down.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" Travis questioned as she put the key in the ignition and pulled out of the spot.

"I think we both have a lot of stuff pent up right now, and nearly zero consequences for our actions," Tori said breathlessly as she shifted into first gear. "I think it's time we get a little bit of that out."

"Look out for the-!" Travis tried to say, but it was too late. The valet guy had gotten back up and tried to stand in front of the car, but Tori was already moving and just ran into him, throwing him to the side.

"Okay, I did NOT mean to do that. Too late now though, let's hit the road!"

About ten minutes later, the Canterlot police had been called, and the chase had begun. Fortunately, the car was completely full of gas, so all the couple had to do was keep driving.

"When did you learn how to drive like this?" Travis cried as she drifted through another red light intersection and sped off to the right.

"I didn't! I'm completely winging this!"

"Speaking of winging it ..." Travis replied, pointing up at the sky. A police, or maybe a news helicopter, had just appeared overhead.

"They'll never take us alive!" Tori said with intentionally cheesy bravado, slamming the gas pedal down further.

"Okay, but do we really have to kill ourselves here? We'll wake up in our hotel either way!" Travis asked seriously, grabbing the oh-shit bar above the passenger door.

"It'll be quicker than getting arrested and spending the night in jail, right?" Tori said, swerving to avoid hitting a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Travis hesitated before sighing. "Quit being right, dammit!"

The chase continued on before Tori found the highway on the edge of downtown.

"Perfect! Time to really see what this baby can do!" Tori laughed and downshifted onto the ramp before busting onto the interstate. The fun wouldn't last for long though, as trouble loomed up ahead.

"Tori ... Tori! They have a roadblock ahead of us! There's no way we're getting past that!"

"I beg to differ!" she rebuked, and spun the wheel towards the left side.

"Tori, tell me you're not about to turn into oncoming traffic! What the fuck!" Travis flinched as she narrowly missed hitting a minivan.

"It's fine, I'll make it work. Watch this ... oh shi-!" Tori was cut off abruptly as the car ran directly into the front of speeding semitruck and was crunched into bits.

The 189's foray into baseball had started well, but now the wheels were starting to come off -- both figuratively and literally. -------- lost a wheel when it tripped over 2nd base during a recent game against the Drunk People at the Local Tavern. The ground in Cassie's backyard was much rougher than the floors of the factory where -------- had once worked before coming to Earth, and when the machine's wheel snagged on the edge of the base, that was enough to pull the wheel loose. The game had to be paused while ----- and ---------- reattached the wheel. The machines were embarrassed, but the people watching the game seemed to understand. Some of them took the opportunity to get another round of beers while they waited for play to resume.

The next game was not any better. Hampton Island's bears were growing more accustomed to the VERY LOUD NOISE of the 189's engines, and John Morton had persuaded them not to shy away from the alien machines. The bears still didn't like ---------- because the earthmover was especially large and noisy, but they were more or less playing normally, the same way they had been trained to play against human opponents. Nimble put the ball over the outfield seats to score the first two runs of the game, and it was all downhill from there. The 189 never came back. On the bright side, nobody lost any wheels or other body parts.

After shaking hands, paws, claws, and tentacles with the Golden Bears, the 189 dusted themselves off, oiled their joints, tightened their loose screws, recharged their batteries, and packed up their gear for their next trip to Ethane -- where they hoped to break their losing streak.

Play of the Game awards as voted for by readers of the TalkBaseball.qd website.

    MD25 v Sherpa Empire (W 5 – 4)

Play of the Game: Johannes Steinnsson’s first home run, after 24 fruitless games, proved to be worth waiting for. The Sherpas made probably the correct decision to leave in set-up man Urkyen Bharadwaj given Steinnsson’s awful lefty splits, but on this occasion the sound logic didn’t pay off as Steinnsson nailed the second pitch he saw over the right field fence. About ten minutes later, after he’d finished rounding the bases, he was greeted by a delirious team celebrating an historic first win on the Moon.

Defensive Play of the Game: Jack Martin’s figures were ruined by one big inning in the fourth, but he didn’t get off to the most promising start either. Qureshi drove the first pitch he saw way back to deep center-right, and only a wall-scaling catch by Katenka Andreeva saved the pitcher’s blushes. She came down hard but clung onto the ball in a puff of (artificial) moon dust. Runner-up was Ananthan’s awesome throw to gun down the overambitious Jiang, lumbering around to try to score from second on Kosuke Tamura’s line drive single to right.

TOOTBLAN of the Game: Steinnsson only got his moment of glory because the Things failed to finish things off in the eighth. Andreeva smacked a line drive to short left and cruised into scoring position with time to spare, but with no outs and the best batter in the time up behind her, she crazily attempted to stretch it to a triple, and got caught in a rundown between Ojha and Qureshi, the latter of whom eventually tagged her out after she tripped over. A game-winning run was converted into a needless out and the Things were forced to take it to the ninth.

    MD26 v Xanneria (L 8 – 3)

Play of the Game: Justin Isaacson hasn’t been much of a factor this Classic. With 3 ½ lefty starters, the bulk of the work has been done by right-handed relievers. He pitched nicely tonight, taking just 17 pitches in 1.2 innings of work, but the highlight was the sparkling web gem he pulled to turn a 1 – 6 – 3 double play. He gave up a bloop hit at the top of the seventh but when the next Xannerian hitter attempted a bunt, he raced in and made an off-balance behind-the-back throw to Hisakawa, who rifled it back to Matsuoka for the double tag.

Bad Omen of the Game: Snorri Jökullsson’s night never really got started after his first pitch was so far inside it almost missed behind the Xannerian leadoff hitter. He followed up by walking the next two to load the bases, before finally locating the strike zone. Dead center, belt high. Though Arrighi showed some patience with him to leave him in after the grand slam, pitching all the way through to the sixth, when he surrendered a leadoff double, it wasn’t much of an audition to be part of a slimmed-down rotation should the Things make the playoffs.

Cheer of the Game: When Luke Phelps drew an empty bases walk, he was cheered on like he’d just crushed a homer. The reason was he’d narrowly avoided striking out for a fifth time. In some countries this is known as a “platinum sombrero”; in Quintessence of Dust, which produces neither platinum nor large-brimmed hats, it’s referred to as a “strawberry donut”. Some of the sheen has dulled from Phelps’s hitting early in the Classic (though he still caught well and threw out a couple baserunners) and his long swing looks a touch slow against red-hot relievers. The Xannerian closer got his K anyway, ringing up Matsuoka next to put the game in the books. Every was happy. Except for Phelps who, as mentioned, struck out four times.

    MD27 @ Chromatika (W 6 – 5 [10 inns])

Play of the Game: A final innings homer on the road doesn’t quite have the drama of a walk-off at home, because there’s the matter of having to wait a half inning to find out if you’ve won. With the way the Quodite gender-non-specific-bovine-pen has been pitching, that’s no sure thing. Still, it was hard to fault Naoko Hisakawa’s enthusiasm as she started leaping up down, watching her deep flyball off Hine Salle tail towards – but stay inside – the foul pole. She’d gone 12 at bats without a hit. The 10th inning was an opportune time to break the streak.

Scouting Error of the Game: Whomever scouted Ben Wilson as a defensive liability who’d sit behind Kayley Symonds and maybe just feature pinch-hitting off the bench needs their eyes and head examined, maybe not in that order. His throw from deep to catch Ingalls short trying to stretch a single was his seventh outfield assist to date. Earlier he’d hit a double, and later drew a patient 11-pitch bases loaded walk to drive in the Things’ first run. Unfortunately, one too many diving save left him slow to get up in the 7th inning. Symonds was brought in and Wilson carted off for prognosis on an injury that could see an end to his breakout Classic.

What-if Moment of the Game: Obviously baseball isn’t a game where you can just swap two numbers over. Strategies change and players react based on game circumstances. But it’s hard not to wonder what would have happened had Luke Phelps not thrown Annovar trying to steal second, when the Amateurs had a runner on third and two outs. It was atonement for Phelps for a passed ball, his first of the Classic, that cost a run; this time he saved a run as Gammond led off the next with a homer. Had that been a 3-RBI dinger, the Things might never have been able to get back into the game.

Lions' sweep puts them in a good position as group stage comes to a close

Samantha Maxwell, Londinium Courier

The top seed in any playoff competition is a coveted prize, promising the easiest path to the finals, as well as displaying the holders' prowess and laying claim to the top team in the world. This year, the top spot in the World Baseball Classic is even more important, as the expanded playoffs means another round, so a top seed should ensure the weakest possible opponent. That top seed isn't in doubt this year, as the Newmanistan Rockets have an eye-popping twenty-five wins against just two losses. Nobody can catch them at this point. But what about the top six seeds, who will avoid a matchup with a second-placed team, or the top three seeds, who will be guaranteed to avoid a first-placed team in the Round of 16? Well, the Lions are in the running for both of those places as the group stage comes to a close. Let's take a look at the Lions' last three games, and their chances as they enter the final three games of the group stage.

Game twenty-five pitted Lions #4 starter Hank Jackson against the United States of Devonta. Jackson was excellent, tossing a complete game while allowing just six hits, two runs, and two walks against nine strikeouts. He hasn't always pitched particularly well in this Classic, but this one was a dandy. He blew his fastball by hitters, got them to swing over his big curve, and induced weak contact when they did make contact most of the time. As for the Lions' offense, Luke Mills hit a two-run single in the third inning to put them up 2-0, then in the sixth, Matthew Gilbert smacked a three-run homer to widen the lead to 5-1. The following inning, Jackson himself, who's not bad with the stick, singled home a run to make it 6-1, then Mills doubled him home to extend the lead to 7-1. 7-2 was the final and the Lions cruised to victory.

Game twenty-six saw Rex Boyd pitch eight strong innings against The Sarian, scattering five hits and a walk to allow just two runs. His fastball was buzzing, and his slider was quite effective, as he picked up ten strikeouts on the night. Sure, he allowed a cheapy hit to the pitcher that scored a run in the third, and yeah, he gave up a gopher ball in the eighth, but overall, he pitched pretty darn well. That's a step forward for him after being battered for eight runs in an inning and two thirds in his last outing. Meanwhile, the Lions put together four runs in a three-inning stretch from the third to the fifth to give Boyd the lead. Erik Austin doubled home a run in the third, Matthew Gilbert did the same in the fourth, and Kelvin Hill hit a two-run single in the fifth to push the lead to 4-1 at the time. Zach Kelley came in and struck out two in the ninth to nail down the save and improve the Lions to 20-6 in the Classic.

In game 27 against United Hemand Insia, manager Mark Singleton stuck with domestic starter but international reliever Rocky Gantt, who had pitched six good innings of two-run ball against The Sarian in game 21, and boy, was he rewarded. Gantt pitched a complete game shutout, looking dominant in a 108-pitch outing. There was never really a question of a perfect game or no-hitter, as he walked a batter in the first and gave up a hit in the second, but his slurve, changeup, and hard fastball easily carried him through the game. He finished allowing just three hits and the walk, while striking out twelve UHI batters. On the offensive side of things, Joey Keller hit a two-run homer in the first, and Luke Mills hit a two-run shot in the seventh, making it 4-0. But the Lions really exploded in the eighth. Keller led off and drew a walk, followed by a Matthew Gilbert single. Jerome Duplantier followed up by drawing a walk as well, loading the bases with none out. Marc Dufors stepped to the plate and ripped a double into the right-center gap, scoring two, while Trevor Goodwin's seeing-eye single rolled just slowly enough for the center fielder to be unable to make a play on Dufors at the plate. With the lead now at 8-0, Boyd sacrificed Goodwin to second, and Erik Austin drew the third walk of the inning to make it runners at first and second. Mills flew out harmlessly to left, but Kelvin Hill mashed a cement-mixer slider into the seats in left for a three-run homer to make it 11-0. That was the final margin as the Lions dominated the game.

The final three games will be hosting Republic of Dixie, hosting Schiltzberg, and then at United States of Devonta. None of them should be a particular challenge, but winning each game will be incredibly important. Cory Sharpe will go against Dixie, Dan Cunningham against Schiltzberg, and Erik Russell will finish things off against Devonta.

If everything stays the same, the playoffs would look like this:

#1 Newmanistan vs. #32 South Covello
#2 Zwangzug vs. #31 Chromatika
#3 Nova Anglicana vs. #30 Daskel
#4 Ko-oren vs. #29 Terre Septentrionale
#5 Hapilopper vs. #28 Kriegiersien
#6 Sarzonia vs. #27 Ranoria
#7 Banija vs. #26 Indusse**
#8 Cassadaigua vs. #25 United States of Devonta
#9 TJUN-ia vs. #24 The Fortem
#10 Hampton Island vs. #23 Megistos
#11 Liventia vs. #22 Ethane
#12 Sherpa Empire vs. #21 Royal Kingdom of Quebec
#13 Drawkland vs. #20 Super-Llamaland
#14 South Newlandia vs. #19 Kohnhead
#15 Abanhfleft vs. #18 Quintessence of Dust
#16 Tikariot* vs #17 Greater Nordics*

*These teams are tied on record and run differential, this is merely an approximation, results may vary should the same conditions hold
**In current standings, would qualify, but results may vary should the same conditions hold

Newmanistan and Zwangzug, despite earning the top two seeds, would actually draw tricky matchups in 19th ranked South Covello and 20th ranked Chromatika, respectively. These teams have been underperforming their ranks, but they are still pretty well-regarded on the international stage. On the other side of things, Banija and Cassadaigua would seem to draw easier Ro32 matchups, playing the currently under-.500 teams of Indusse and the United States of Devonta. That's a quirk of seeding the second-place teams before the wild-card teams. Of course, if both Newmanistan and Cassadaigua won their round of 32 and round of 16 matchups (against Abanhfleft/QoD and Tikariot/Greater Nordics, respectively) that would set up a heavyweight matchup, worthy of the WBC finals, in the quarterfinals. The fifth-ranked, six-time champions, against the top-ranked hosts? Now that would be a ticket worth paying for. It's just a shame it might happen this early. As for the Lions, they would currently draw 16-11 and 23rd-ranked Daskel in the Round of 32. The Lions have some history with the Daskies, having played them in WBC 48, when they made their debut. Back then, the Lions went 4-2 against Daskel, and the result should be the same if it occurred in this WBC. But they are fighters, so nothing's ever that easy. Should the Lions win, they'd get the winner of Liventia-Ethane. Liventia is ranked 15th, while Ethane is ranked 26th, but the Red Kites did defeat the Lions in the finals of WBC 41 to win a title, so playing them would be both perhaps an easier matchup and a chance to get revenge. Let's do that. But of course, the Lions still have to win as many games as they can in their final three in order to ensure themselves of the best playoff seed possible. So go Lions and stay tuned for who will end up where in the Round of 32!

The Home Stretch!
Ranorian Krauts Rally To Win 7 of Last 8 Games

Image
The Krauts, 9-10 not too long ago, have produced a much needed late surge, and are now slotted in as the top wild card squad in this Classic

Who would have expected this? After a 9 to 3 loss, at home, to Rwekazaland plunged our high-hopes squad to a losing record, something clicked. Losing only to TJUN-ia since, and beating the 14th ranked Greater Nordics twice, Leonardo Harrison's Krauts have found something, whatever it is, and they're holding on to it for dear life.

The last three matches, which saw a 10 to 1 routing of Sangti, who's given us our fair share of lumps, have been satisfying. Beating Tha Great Pond, a team that will be remembered most in Ranoria for rostering a duck who beat the crap out of one of our pitchers, 7 to four, gave us a real shot in this thing. But the biggest recent win came in an 8 to 4 home win over the 14th seeded Greater Nordics. That team, which had been first in the group for some time, now slips to 1-4 against our national team. That proves, despite our 0-5 marks against the battin' jags, that Ranoria can indeed swing with the better teams in this tournament need be.

A huge factor in this stretch? Jesse Griffith has been a reliable bat in the season-defining stretch, notching a pair of home runs and batting just under .300 in those eight contests. Chipping the youngster in with the blue-blood talent we have in our rotation has provided an edge in scoring, just a little bit extra compared to what we've had during the rest of the season. The kid is flashing that potential that he showed playing in Federation of Ranorian Baseball this season, and the reason he's the youngest Ranorian to ever take the plate as a pro.

Now, don't be getting crazy. The group's two automatic qualifier spots are still far out of reach, with the TJUN-ia's dominant season leaving them at 19 wins already, a mark the Krauts could only hit if they won out. And the Greater Nordics, at 18 wins, are too far ahead for the Krauts to realistically catch up. But that's okay. So what, Leonardo Harrison was wrong about winning twenty games in the group stage. Harrison's Guarantee may have long lived in infamy had the Krauts missed the postseason for their third straight World Baseball Classic entry, but right now, on the verge of making those knockout games, it will be a footnote should he be able to provide the real substance: A win in a group stage series.

And he has done his part. Through 27 games, Harrison has seven home runs and is still hovering over a .335 batting average, consistently getting on base and providing plenty of RBIs. Fortunately, despite being a veteran compared to some other members of our national team, Harrison, at 25, is and will be, for a good few years, in his prime. We won't be losing his bat or playmaking at shortstop any time soon.

Now, there is one little issue, and it goes by the name of Sarzonia. At the moment, that's who we'd be up against per the bracket, and they are, without a doubt, better than any team our Krauts have gone up against, at 20-7 already, they're giving Banija's 20 win squad a run for their money. In other words? Probably out of our league. In one game that may be manageable, but over the course of a five game series, the Krauts are in trouble against the Stars.

Doable...perhaps. Our best bet would be pushing the series to as many games as possible, to hopefully get Tommy Verona more than one start. Frankly, we're as highly seeded as we're going to get, even if we certainly can't afford to drop a few contests. And besides, for what? So that we get Banija, Ko-oren, or, perish the thought, freaking Newmanistan? We'd be crushed! Humiliated on not national, but international television! And hey, maybe Sarzonia does that, too. But at least we have a chance to contend with them, slim though it may be.

Batter up! League NEWS

The Final of the group stage is coming for our Kriegiersien Baseball National Team.

And with three wins the Kriegiersien team stormed into the decisive day. Starting with a tremendous first win in Liventia with Leon Prince smashing a further home run (9-2).
He repeated that with one in West Florida (7-4).
And even without a home run from him, but a home base steal from Sam Thomas, the third match in Lisander could be won (7-2).

Now even the first place in the group is possible. Theoretical. Wins in Liventia and at home in the final match against Abanhleft are needed for that and the help of the others teams. More important should be the home match against Cransia in the beginning that could be a decisive win to secure a Wild Card to get to the play-offs.

Will the story go on? Or will it end? Can you feel the tension? We do.

Player in the focus: Sam Thomas

His nickname is “The thief” and that not only because he is stealing the hearts of his fans and as a young boy candy. He now steals bases and that with an unbelievable success. While in Kriegiersien he is now pretty much known for shenanigans, in the Classics he is pretty undetected. Many Top nations see the Group stages as only an entree and are not too wary for special moves and in scouting their opponents. That surely helped Thomas to three further stealings of bases in the last three games, even against the Top Nations.

Batter Up!: Short Summaries (Games 25-27)

Postby TJUN-ia » Thu Nov 19, 2020 11:36 am

Game 25 - TJUN-ia (22) 7-0 Sangti (UR) (Kabunuklan Sports Complex, San Rafael)
After 3 wins on the trot, Kyle McNash started TJUN-ia's 3 road game series on the mound in San Rafael against bottom-side Sangti. Things were looking good for qualification as it stood, with the Jags tied with The Greater Nordics for the group lead, but Phillip Hellas-Verona knew that the Battin' Jags couldn't afford to look over the final 6 games as even if TJUN-ia secured qualification before Game 30, the question of playoff seeding will have to be answered by their record.

The game was certainly all that TJUN-ia could've asked for. The first pitch by Indios pitcher Joenard Karlos Abao was sent to deep left by Pedro Moires for a first-ball home run. That would set the tone for the rest of the game, as McNash took over on one side of the ball and the batting did the same on the other. One run was scored in the 4th, then Matoko Kagawa got 2 more runs by himself using another homer and finally, 3 more came in the 8th as Moires got his 2nd homer of the night to end the TJUN-ian scoring. The real magic was on the mound, however, as McNash's resistance allowed him to record a no-hitter - a rarity in TJUN-ian baseball. A no-hitter, a record-breaking 17th win, 3 homers on the same night and with Ranoria beating the Nordics 8-4 on the road, the Nattin' Jags had the lead back by a game.

Game 26 - TJUN-ia (22) 4-1 Tha Great Pond (UR) (Clear Pond Field, Tha Great Pond)
For the first time since Game 14, TJUN-ia would start as the group leaders. That was the situation Chris Harris would start in for the team's final clash with Tha Great Pond at Clear Pond Field. Many would be happy to see the back of the Ducks after this one, but everyone knew a job had to be done if TJUN-ia were to record their 5th win on the bounce and the record-breaking win number 18 to officially better the 17-13 record TJUN-ia produced at WBC49.

That would be the situation heading into the game but it would be a quiet one at Clear Pond Field. Both Harris and Donald Duck were dynamite on the mound except for 2 specific points in this boring game. The first was at the bottom of the 5th as Phillip Duck took Harris off guard with a solo homer into the pond to give the home side the lead. TJUN-ia would try to even things up but it would be to no avail...until the 2nd point of chaos. The Top of the 8th saw all 3 of Bryce Calhoun, Angel Enrique and Rafael Llorente make onto bases before Matoko Kagawa sent the ball into the pond for a Grand Slam. TJUN-ia turned 0-1 to 4-1 in flash and Donald was replaced by Clyde Duck for the rest of the game. The Jags took care of the job and win number 18 was theirs. This is history in the making, but the road isn't over yet...

Game 27 - TJUN-ia (22) 9-5 Rwekazaland (UR) (Unknown Location, Rwekazaland)
For the final time this group stage, the DH would be used by TJUN-ia as we headed to Rwekazaland. Davis Johnson was the starter and things would advance very quickly from here as Pedro Moires scored the first homer of the night in the first only for Vishal Vincent to score one of his own in the 2nd to tie the game. The game would die down a bit but the more runs arrived. A 2-run homer by Angel Enrique gave the Jags the lead back in the 5th which was then backed up by another run in the 6th. The 8th would be the best one yet as a 3-run bomb Ki Yung-son and a 2-run one by the legend that is Killian O'Mally put the Jaguars 9-1 up with one inning to play. The bottom of the 9th saw more drama, however, as Reggie Bridges got himself a grand slam to make it 9-5. Johnson was replaced by Closer Carlos Buena and he managed to retire the batters for the final time.

It was over. The deed was done. TJUN-ia were back in the playoffs now, no matter what happened in the final 3 games. As the team celebrated in the clubhouse that night, the records they had set were all to see. The Battin' Jags had won 6 games on the bounce and were now only 1 win away from winning 20 games out of 30, a feat many didn't expect this time around. With only the group winners and the playoff seeding to be decided, everyone knew they could relax for a bit...but they decided not to. Why? Because they wanted to win this group and it may come down to New Washington and Copenhagen to decide the fate of it all...

(Yeah, I am just doing short episodes again, no coherent stuff. I promise some for the next one)

South Newlandia through to the WBC knockouts!

Sometimes, all good things are really three. For the third time in a row, after WBC48 and 49, the Elephants have secured a spot in the wildcard rounds after collecting eighteen wins so far. That will be good for at least a wildcard spot, and therefore good to make the playoffs in Cassadaigua. For the third time in a row, the Elephants are through with three games remaining; let’s hope that they don’t also repeat a first knockout-round exit for a third time. Looking at the table, it becomes apparent that South Newlandia will be stuck in second place, since Zwangzug, the 31st-ranked team in the multiverse, is running away with the group. Their 21-6 record is good for second-best in the entire tournament right now, second only to these invincible rockets from Newmanistan. South Newlandia is currently the best among the teams right now placed in 2nd, and with no matches against Zwangzug remaining, they can hope for a reasonable seed.

South Newlandian Sports Bets presents:

Close to the line

The Red Kites find themselves close to going over the line in terms of qualification for the playoff. Earlier on in the group stage, it looked like the team from Ethane would struggle in making the playoffs, with the group looking particularly competitive for the second playoff spot. However, towards the end of the group stages, the Ethanians have managed to build a small gap to third placed Mathuvan Union - co-hosts with other fellow group members Sylestone of another minor sporting event - with 6 points separating them. That's a points differential equivalent to victory in 2 games, which means to certify second position, all the Red Kites need to do is win 2 of their last three games, OR beat the Mathuvan Union in the differentials used to break up ties.

The team have looked pretty decent across the group stages so far, scoring 127 runs, though they have come nowhere near close to limiting runs against them the same way as Hampton Island have with 87 runs equivalent to Ethane's 122 runs. But 11 losses in the group does not bode well for the playoffs, whoever the team comes up against, and a long run or even a victory as previously achieved by Ethane in the world cup should not be expected in this half-centennial WBC.
Esportivan and Proud.

Lake Eclipse, just outside Hapilopper City
World Baseball Classic 50 Match 27: Hapilopper v. The Fortem
So the Haps got beat by the Fortem yet again. The Fortem had proven to be the most frustrating team for the Hapilopper National Baseball Team during this World Baseball Classic, as it seemed they were the only team that the Haps could not easily do away with. But it’s not as if there was any issue on this day, because the Hap Thrashers had officially qualified for the knockout rounds of the World Baseball Classic.

So for the final three games of the classic, manager Dale Moss decided he was going to bench each of the starting position players to rest them up for the start of the playoffs. After all, there was no sense in a top-shelf player getting hurt in what was for all intents and purposes a meaningless game for them. The starters didn’t mind getting benched for this purpose, understanding the reasoning behind it. So after the game ended, members of the team took off and did their own thing.

Jerome Hayden, Levi Berry and Mo Beverly stopped by Lake Eclipse, a manmade reservoir which was used to serve as Hapilopper’s main source of drinking water, and also as a place where people from all walks of life, and all levels of sobriety, would hang out and enjoy themselves. The three boarded “Torrid Tomorrow,” Levi’s 30-foot yacht that typically docked on the east end of the lake. They brought with them several cases of beer, some “green leafy stuff” from Jerome’s stash and enough munchies for a week and a half.

And as you would expect, fun times were had as they laid down anchor on a quiet alcove of Lake Eclipse. There wasn’t anything scandalous going on with the three. They turned on the radio, listened to some tunes, watched a couple of World Baseball Classic games, got drunk, smoked up and had a great time. But that was about it. There was nothing ridiculous happening with the three, they figured that they could celebrate making the knockout rounds of the 50th World Baseball Classic.

The next morning, the three emerged from the cabin of “Torrid Tomorrow” to enjoy some breakfast and maybe run into some people relaxing on the lake. With Levi at the helm, the boat traveled around the lake, searching for people to say hi to, have a beer with and maybe make friends with. When they found a group of women on another boat, the three pulled to a stop, and Jerome jumped off the bow of the boat. But there was one major problem.

Jerome’s cell phone and wallet were in his pockets.

He didn’t realize it until he had already jumped into the water, and was deep inside it. The women on the boat, as well as Levi and Mo, could hear a muffled “MMMPH FUMMPH FUMMPH” from underwater, and watched Jerome quickly surface. When Jerome surfaced, he had a panicked look on his face as he swam to a ladder on the starboard side of the ship.

“Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck FUCK!” Jerome muttered, then shouted. “I just ruined my damn cell phone!”

Being the helpful teammates they were, Levi and Mo exploded in laughter. This was a problem that could be fixed easily. Nobody was hurt, and Jerome hadn’t been electrocuted by the cell phone hitting water, so all was good. Oh, and the women thought it was hilarious too.

“Glad you guys think it’s funny,” Jerome whined, looking at his teammates. “Berry, you got anything? A towel, a sponge, anything?”

Barely able to hold in his laughter, Levi walked into the cabin and searched for a box of rice. At the end of the day, it wasn’t going to be that big of a deal. Jerome made enough money as a professional baseball player that he could get a new top-of-the-line phone, and if anything in his wallet was ruined, he could get that replaced with ease.

“Here, give me your phone,” Levi said.

Jerome handed Levi his phone, and Levi promptly dumped it in the box of rice.

“Supposedly this will help a phone if it got doused, but you went in pretty deep,” Levi said. “Hopefully it’ll be OK. Wait until the rest of the team hears about this, though…”

“Oh, PLEASE!” Jerome whined again. He knew the rest of the team was going to laugh their asses off when they found out about the cell phone, and he knew the rest of the team was going to needle him mercilessly about it. But, such is the nature of the beast. After all, Milford Gibbs’ name “Hot Sauce” didn’t come without reason.

And sure enough, when the three got back to Capital Stadium to work out before traveling to West Phoenicia, Levi told the rest of the team exactly what happened. And sure enough, the rest of the team, as well as the coaching staff and a handful of reporters on hand, thought it was about the funniest thing they had seen. By the end of the day, Jerome By-God Hayden had a new name.

His teammates were now calling him “Wet Cell.”

Corrupt Dictatorship

Postby Ko-oren » Thu Nov 19, 2020 3:34 pm

Early in the tournament, Ko-oren jumped to a big lead in the series versus Terre Septentrionale and Velarland. Somehow, the only team the 'Islanders' couldn't seem to beat was Philamer Isle, who started off by winning the first two games in the series. Only then did the Ko-orenites fight back: our first win over them was pretty decisive, the first game where our attack could score more than 10 runs - the game finished 12-6. They would remain our bogey team for the remainder of the group stage, however. Still the only team we have a losing record to, and we can only take it to .500.

The Ko-orenite national team also managed a comeback versus Inner AngianaUsordia, who also took the first two games, but unlike Philamer Isle they then lost the next three. From 0-2 to 3-2 in the series, with one game to go - even if Inner AngianaUsordia cannot advance from the group anymore, that's a result to hold on to heading into their second cycle. It's always hopeful to be someone's bogey team, especially so if you've been playing spoiler versus one of the better teams in the tournament Citation needed.

Velarland's chances to advance from Group A weren't great from the start and by losing all six games to us, they didn't do themselves any other favours. Kohnhead and Terre Septentrionale both won just a single game versus us. The big difference is that the former are dead last in the group, while the latter two are in a fight for a wildcard (or, potentially, they can both get a wildcard). As it stands, Kohnhead might start to loathe their schedule: they have one more win than the Nordiques, but they also still play us. It's either them or the Nordiques to take second place and the better seeding.

Ko-oren record versus each group opponent
Philamer Isle 2-3
Kohnhead 4-1
Terre Septentrionale 5-1
Inner AngianaUsordia 3-2
Velarland 6-0

With three games to go, we can take a look at the third placed teams across the Classic. These thirteen teams are all stuck between 12 and 16 wins - and with six of these thirteen teams to seize a knockout series berth, 12 just isn't enough right now. In a very unlikely scenario, even some fourth placed teams (some of which have 13 wins and are looking better than the 12-win teams sitting in third) aren't proverbially dead yet.

Looking at our 27 games so far, we've gone 20-7 (.741). Our starting pitchers haven't been distributed equally over these games, and some have gotten more difficult opponents than others (Gavreau and Brands were saved for the Terre Septentrionale games, for instance, and Gavreau and Figueredo started versus Kohnhead). That gives us the following results:

Starting pitcher win-loss record
Gavreau 4-2 (.667)
Matsuda 5-2 (.714)
Brands 4-2 (.667)
Figueredo 5-0 (1.00)
Jabe 2-1 (.667)

This is not entirely fair, as in some cases the bullpen messed up a surefire win, or the starter was pulled early for bad results and was saved by the relievers. Jabe doesn't have a big sample size but did perfectly versus Velarland (0 runs allowed, 3 hits allowed, 11 strikeouts, 7 innings pitched). One of Matsuda's losses wasn't due to his play, for instance: the matchday 8 fixture versus Inner AngianaUsordia was in no danger when Matsuda was relieved late in the fifth inning: Ko-oren was up 1-0 and would go up 2-0 an inning later. Errors in the ninth inning, and questionable pitching by Igarashi and Janagimoto however gave up three runs in the eighth and ninth inning, losing the Islanders the game 2-3. All not due to Matsuda's good start. And yet, he's the second best pitcher by win rate at the end of the game. Figueredo is arguably the best starter - he didn't always receive the tough opponents, but made the best of his starts.

What really needs to be said is how rarely the bullpen gave away wins, though. In the days of lower scoring Ko-orenite national teams their role was even larger, but even so, they never broke down save for that 2-3 loss. Igarashi, Hoga, and the closers Higashi, Janagimoto, and Kamei have been professional and efficient, keeping the opponents from coming back.

THE WBC50 25
An LBC-LSN Collaboration

THE PITCHERS
Multiple Contributing Authors

Sorry for the abruptness of our colleague's article on Jake Earnest yesterday. Due to time constraints, we won't be able to fix it, but rest assured that Kyle is no longer with our team, and that getting someone from Llama Sports Today! to help out was a massive mistake. Today is a little bit of a change in pace, as we introduce every member of the five-man starting rotation that our all-time team will have. We've arranged them in order, although the difference between the first few starters aren't especially big. Since we're covering five different players, we won't go into too much detail about each one...for now. Enjoy!

SP - Justin Zheng, #13

Signature Moment: "Here's the second. Swung on and it's a ground ball up the middle! But Markus Wright is behind it. He scoops it up, throws over to Nicolas Rousseau, makes the catch AAAHHHHHHHHH!!* HE'S DONE IT! Justin Zheng completes the best Llamanean pitching performance you will ever see in your life! Justin Zheng has a no-hitter in his first WBC40 start for the Tigers! What a remarkable achievement for such a remarkable young man! You will never see this again! A no-hitter at the World Baseball Classic from Justin Zheng! Tigers nine - Lisander zero - and Justin Zheng enters the pantheon of great Llamanean players!" -WBC40 Group Stage Game 2, Lisander

A lot of things get covered up when you win. Justin Zheng was a very good starter for his first few Classics, but wasn't particularly special compared to the other aces on this list. And his decline, culminating in a poor start that led to a WBC43 quarterfinals exit against Free Republics, wasn't particularly graceful, either. But at his peak, in WBC40? Justin Zheng had one of the best pitching performances in the history of the WBC. The numbers don't lie - W-L, ERA, and the narrative might not get you very far in Super-Llamaland, but 9-0, 1.26, a no-hitter, and a championship, speak for themselves. And when the competition got tough, Zheng showed up. In four starts against Newmanistan and Schiltzberg, he, well, the numbers speak for themselves.

WBC40 Semifinals Game 1 (Tigers win in 11): 10 IP, 1 ER
WBC40 Semifinals Game 4 (Tigers win elimination game over Newmanistan): 7 IP, 0 ER
WBC40 Finals Game 3 (Tigers take 2-1 lead over Schiltzberg): 9 IP, 1 ER
WBC40 Finals Game 6 (Tigers win the WBC): 7 IP, 2 ER

SP - AJ Rondout, #23

There are some arguments that favor Rondout over Zheng, but the fact of the matter is that the narrative is too strong. Zheng had more longevity, despite his injury issues, due to the post-WBC32 purge. And while AJ Rondout's peak in WBC31 was absolutely dominant, the lack of suspense gives it less of a mystical air than Justin Zheng's WBC40. At his peak, Rondout was just as nasty as Zheng, flashing triple-digit speed and a wipeout slurve. But even if you look at the numbers and wipe the narrative away, Rondout just doesn't quite measure up. Sure, he had a 0.53 ERA, which is absolutely ridiculous. But he pitched in a much less challenging offensive environment than Zheng did - after all, the Tigers literally gave up twenty-six runs in a thirty-game group stage - keeping him at second-best despite being the ace of one of the best pitching staffs in modern history.

SP - Evan Masorka, #43

Evan Masorka was the OG Llamanean ace - while he was well into his twilight years when the Tigers won WBC28, he still played a key role in elevating the Tigers from perennial first-round exits to champions. Masorka's imposing physique, cutter-changeup combination, and friendliness with the fans may have elevated his legend above his actual standard of play - which was a few WBCs hovering around 2.50 ERAs, and a few more north of 3. But this is a much less sabermetrically-oriented publication than most Llamanean baseball analysis, and if you just look at the most important 25, Masorka has to be on the list.

SP - Josva Reynolds, #22

The rare pitcher that spanned two eras of Llamanean international baseball, Josva Reynolds made his debut at WBC31 and surprisingly hung around until WBC34 and WBC35. His status as one of two players from the disastrous WBC32 team makes him an anomaly whose legacy sportswriters have never quite been able to handle. But Reynolds was arguably the Tigers' best pitcher after making his debut during that undefeated WBC31 run (he does still hold the single-WBC record for lowest ERA on Super-Llamaland), and while his next few years never quite lived up to that magical 0.47 run, he remained rock-solid until his early retirement. A southpaw whose fastball maxed out at 89 but who was the epitome of a crafty lefty, Reynolds doesn't quite have the story that these other pitchers have, but we can't fault him for being on three very weak Tigers teams in addition to his WBC31 squad.

SP - Natalie Wu, #49

Natalie Wu had the shortest career of anyone here, as after four Classics from WBC40-43, most of which spent toward the end of the rotation, the Llamanean Event abruptly cut her international career short. While we said we wouldn't consider domestic careers, Wu's four LBL titles as a core member of the New Llama Cyclones don't exactly hurt her case. And she has no shortage of clutch moments to choose from, whether she was outdueling Courtney Duvall in Game 5 of the WBC40 semifinals or pitching eight near-flawless innings in a WBC41 elimination game. A lefty with both power and patience in spades, Wu could've even moved up on this list if she'd pitched a WBC inning in her thirties.

Weegham bore much the same relationship to Arlington that Hadiln did to Spenson, that being one of resentment. In both cases, the younger and larger city had the gall to overshadow the older--in Spenson's case, this was especially frustrating because it had sprung up around the central government's spaceport rather than emerging "naturally" as a population hub. Weegham called themselves the Rainmakers because, apparently, some time back in the day their team had experienced a lot of rainouts, but they also bragged about how they spent several months out of the year averaging below the freezing point (thankfully, not in baseball season); they were that much farther north than Arlington to be used as a point of comparison for the "cold, not mountainous or rainforesty" part of the country's meteorological tables. The renaissance of modern board game allusions had not helped matters either, as Weegham stubbornly insisted that their Pandemic: Legacy was totally different and more complex than Arlington's base Pandemic, and then some countries had experienced a real pandemic and both of the northeastern cities grudgingly dropped the subject.

Another sort of sibling rivalry was on display as Lorna and Henry welcomed their adopted son, Bruno. His elder sister Marilu poked at him with a mix of curiosity and wariness. "Gentle, sweetheart," said Lorna.

"Bruno," said Henry. "Can you say 'Bruno'?"

"Bwuno," repeated Marilu, age three and already a true northeasterner.

It had been harder to justify their erratic tour as they wound north and east. Partly, due to an increasing familiarity with the country, there was slightly less to discover; partly, the fact that the golden haze continued to appear in the west no matter where they ventured made navigating by it somewhat useless. Yet there they were, looking for stars behind the rainclouds. (Alfred had mentioned wanting to see strange astronomical phenomena, more broadly, but a snooty Rainmakers fan had told him that the Aurora baseball team was not to be found in their city.)

"Thank you for the tour," said Buck. "We got this for Bruno." A teddy bear that was slightly larger than his head. "Well, he'll grow into it."

"And this," said Alfred, "for Marilu, the new big sister!" A light wiffle bat.

"That's very kind," said Henry. "Marilu, what do you say?"

"Baseball," said Marilu, whirling around and holding the bat at arm's length.

Alfred laughed. "We understand."

Lorna tilted her head. "You're just giving random people gifts to celebrate the new arrival?"

"Basically, yeah," said Alfred, "no strings attached."

"You probably need some too, huh?" Buck said. "We can get you some diapers. Something useful."

"No, no," said Lorna. "I was just thinking that Katrina might want some help for her textbooks, or something, when she goes back to school."

"Sorry," said Buck, "who's Katrina?"

"Bruno's birth mother. She's back in Kedzy, at U of Homler."

"Oh," said Buck softly. For all that Zwangzug had been quite progressive in some aspects, it could be rather conservative in others. "Yeah. Send us her contact info, or something. We'll find a way."

As happy as Sarzonian national baseball team manager Geoff Yancey was to see his team officially clinch the Group 2 title with five matches remaining, he was disappointed to see his team drop two matches, even though the matches were against the two other ranked teams in the group.

"Very disappointed," Yancey said. "I didn't want to make either of those matches bullpen games, but we just didn't play with the kind of energy I want."

The Stars will wrap up the group stage against the unranked sides, but with both Sevendia and Valanora in contention for the second automatic bid to the knockout rounds, Yancey said he would play with his normal starting lineup.

"We've about to get into all hands on deck territory," he said. "I don't want us to be in a position where we have to suddenly regain focus."

Part 5

What is it with me and getting stuck in stuff? Another backpack, but this is a nice one. No dirty socks or worse. This here smells like...I have no idea what it smells like, but I like it. So what will await me there? I've never seen a girl's room actually. Humans and their weird distinctions. With us a ball is a ball. Soft, hard, doesn't matter, still a ball. There are no boy balls and girl balls. What is the difference anyways? I mean, sure, they do look different and sound different and act-- Oh, now I see.

Coming to think of it, we actually DO look all the same. A softball is a softball, a baseball is a baseball. I think that if I had a jaw, it would have dropped just now. Hm. I wonder where humans get manufactured. I haven't seen any stitching anywhere, so now I really want to know how humans are made! They need really oddly shaped cork for their cores.

Ah, door opening, backpack being lifted, we're home! I hope. I'm really not sure about anything anymore. As long as it's not dirt, garbage or a dog's mouth I end up in, I guess I'll be reasonably happy. Oh hello hand. Thank you. So this is where I will be living? Quaint, but nice. No dog in sight, another plus. Hi mom! Yes, yes, that's me!

OK, now how can I get in touch with the spokesball of my union? I don't think anybody ever considerated long-distance communication. Or - any communication, that is. OK, mom, dad, kid, here's what I need. A computer with internet connection, a copy of the softball union code, a car at my disposal at all times and if you have one handy, a good lawyer with knowledge of inter-ball physiology.

Yes, put me up there on the shelf for now while you get it all ready, ok? I'll be right here, just let me know when I can start work, alright?

Good, so they are working on that, now I just need a strategy. Who could we sue? The bats for the hits, the humans for throwing so hard and also for hitting with the bat. Yes, I think that is a good start. Gotta talk to H&S about the guidelines for a safe work environment to see where they overstepped. Then I'll need a physician to evaluate the health risk and review previous injuries and then the causation of what caused these injuries. Hah, this is going to be a breeze! What did the old guy with the dog always say "We got him by the balls!" So, so fitting, just that now the balls are going to have him by the...uh, nevermind.

Ah there they are, do you have my-- Uh, hello? Where are you going? Why are you leaving me alone? Girls' night out? Oh! Alright, I get it, so your husband is going to get me my stuff. Why are you telling her that you have to go back into work? You'll be helping me! Oh, maybe that's the work he has to do. Humans are so complicated.

Who is she now? Babysitter? Aha. Why do I get a feeling that I'm not going to get my computer tonight then? *sigh* nobody gets the urgency of this! Real baseballs are getting really hurt out there, people! Guess I'll wait then.

Little girl getting tired. Must be her bedtime, I guess. And off she goes. What does a babysitter do when there is no more baby to sit? Hm.

*ding dong* The doorbell! I'll get it! *straining* Still cannot move. This is frustrating! There she is. WHAT? Who is he now? Do mom and dad know this guy? They must, why else would he come over, right?

WBC 50: Three more!
By Nakamura Go (@GomuraOfficial)

-- We're on the home stretch of the WBC groups stage, with the playoffs just around the corner. Team Daskel had three amazing games against Oscioru, Tikariot and Thea Liters. Of the three games, the match versus Tikariot held in the Daito Kyujo was explosive. The Daskies scored 12 runs, a record for the team WBC wise, starting with a brutal display of aggressive batting. Five runs were scored in the first, in a whole team collaboration effort. Fuji established himself as a top hitter with a 2-run homerun in the 6th inning.

Now, three more games and the Daskies may qualify for the first time to the WBC playoffs, even better taking this is quite the historical edition. Here's the 3 keys for the last games success, and the 3 keys for the future.

KEYS OF THE PAST
1. Rebuild
Team Daskel was abated with a lot of rough spots, some of them by dramatic decisions roster-wise. It looks like the coaching staff finally found some stability with the selected people in the field, and keeping them together for a longer time was a wise risk to take. The inclusion of Shibaike, Rokutani and Fuji in the starting lineup made wonders for the team in the long run.

2. Better batting
With the addition of the mentioned batters, Team Daskel made a step towards the aggressive batting. The combination of risk batting choices and base running tactics payed off in the later stage of the group's stage, with Daskel having a record 22 runs in three games, 12 of them in one game.

3. Teamwork
The violent changes in the roster did nothing for the team, but now, with an established list of starters and players more used to crazy traveling than before, the machine started to move as a machine, and not just like nine different, independent contraptions. Both the infield and the outfield are moving with more ease, making smart plays in key situations. We also knowledge Shibaike for his large part on putting the infield together again. Reizei is also improving in the team's captaincy.

KEYS FOR THE FUTURE
1. Keeping the strike
Of course, wining is important. With only three games and the two group leaders already qualified, the Daskies cannot risk to lose it all. Both batters and pitchers will have to be in full condition for these games, that feel like more like a war than a battle.

2. Keeping the strike
Almost as important, if not more than the first point is keeping the scoring trend. The scoring differential could be crucial for the Daskies if they want to qualify to the playoffs. Score high, and the team will for sure have high opportunities to make it.

3. Managing the dark horse
We all know the big Cassadagan monster. We are terrified by it, in all her pink glory. The game against the WBC's host is important, but also is to win against Carung and Oscioru. The Daskies have had a rough luck with unranked and lower ranked teams. The dark horse is right here in front of Daskel's eyes. It's up to them to tame the beast.

Team Daskel is currently third in the group with 48 points and a +22 differential, which was unthinkable off in the early games. Will the Daskies make it? Who'll be the hero? Home advantage is on us the next games, so please, go and cheer for the Daskies. Make the Daikyū roar!

CASSADAIGUA TRAVEL GUIDE

The Cassadaigua Board of Tourism would like to welcome you to our great nation for the 50th World Baseball Classic.

Many of you are here to support your nation that will be playing their games here in Cassadaigua, but there will additionally be many that come here as a neutral fan, simply to enjoy this great competition. You may be here to enjoy baseball, but there is so much more that you can do in Cassadaigua. This guide will provide information that will help you get the most of your visit, so that you can leave happy no matter what the ending result of your nation’s fate becomes in the tournament.

Part I: About Cassadaigua

1)Firstly, where is Cassadaigua and what is the best way to get here?

Cassadaigua is located in the region of Rushmore, and more specifically south-central Rushmore.

The best recommendation to get here is to fly in, unless you are from nearby in Rushmore, you may just want to drive or take a train. All Cassadagan cities have a major airport, and the nation has an advanced rail system as well. If you insisted on traveling by sea, there are some easily attainable port cities to make it very convenient, but we suggest flying in.

2) Will I be safe? What is crime like?

Cassadaigua is no more or no less safe than any other nation. During any sporting competition, you can confidently expect and enjoy world class security to ensure your utmost enjoyment at the games and the communities in which they are taking part. The security presence will be noticeable throughout, but also have been highly trained in these situations, so they will not bear an overwhelming or intimidating presence. If one is intimidated by it, then they were probably planning on doing something wrong in the first place.

In recent years, the Matriarchy has seen improvements in gender equality. Organizations such as MEN (Male Equality Now) have peacefully been successful in narrowing the gap. At this time, therefore, protests are not occurring.

3) Tell me more about your female-dominated society. Are male tourists safe?

Cassadaigua’s society is different than what is seen throughout most of the world. In our nation, the female is the dominant gender and is superior to the male. This should not be surprising if you have followed our own national sport teams in even the slightest of ways. There are some groups who feel that men are greatly oppressed in our nation, but that is not really the case. If you are a man, and you are visiting Cassadaigua, as long as you are aware of our somewhat different culture, you should not have a tough time fitting in. After all, Cassadagan men that play by the rules here and respect their role can be very successful themselves. As long as you respect our culture, you should be fine while you are here. If you act disrespectful, then don’t be surprised if you are soon put in your place. You are expected to follow all Cassadagan laws, even if it is not a law in your own country.

4) I’ve been to nations that have talking ponies, or banned cars, or taxes on every little thing. Should I expect anything like this?

Cassadagans love horses, but there are no talking ponies here. At least not that we know of. If we have any sentient immigrants from nations like Equestrian States, they keep a very low profile. Cars are very much a way of life, and our taxes aren’t anything out of the ordinary, and if anything are a little lower than average. Cassadaigua is a modern, economic powerhouse. There are no unusual factors associated with the country, other than the gender differences.

Socially, Cassadaigua is open to members of all faiths, and we respect your right to worship your respective deity in the way you see fit; or to not worship one at all. Homosexuality is accepted in the country, though we can’t promise that some random drunk in the stands or on the streets won’t make offensive comments.

As far as drinking is concerned, the legal age is 18, though many get away with underage drinking as it is not as aggressively policed as it may be in other lands. However, do not drink and drive. If you are caught, you will have a greater jail sentence then you might be expecting, and if you kill anyone by drunk driving, you will receive the death penalty.

Smoking anywhere in public is banned, but legal in your own home. This applies to both cigarettes and marijuana. All other recreational drugs are banned.

Part II: Host Cities

CONCORD HEIGHTS

Concord Heights is the capital of Cassadaigua and hosted many international championships in the past. This includes the World Cup, as well as several editions of the World Baseball Classic. The city, which is also the most populous in the country, has a lot that one can do, whether sports themed, or not. Chances are, you are coming here for sports, so feel free to visit the Cassadaigua National Sports Hall of Fame. Here you will learn the stories of the legends of Cassadagan sport, including those who have their numbers retired from the soccer team on monument wall in the north end zone of the stadium (the concept here is like Monument Park at Yankee Stadium). While at the Hall of Fame, you can also learn about other Cassadagan legends and earn new or greater appreciation for those who helped us become the first nation to win a title in the five greatest sports in the World.

Those wishing to do something non-sports themed can find additional museums across the city, including the national museum which pays homage to the past leaders of the nation. You can also take a guided tour of the grounds of the Palace itself where the Queen resides, though access to the Palace itself is not open to the public. The city is also home to prestigious learning institutions, such as the University of Concord Heights.

BRATTLEBORO

The massive stadium is sponsored by Five Star Mobile, who have become Cassadaigua’s most well known company in terms of sponsoring sporting events. That has been seen most in NSSCRA where not only did they host the Five Star Mobile 500, but they hosted the Five Star Clash, a competition that was willing to award money to people from anywhere. The company has been great with gearing contests towards fans, and that should be expected during the World Cup as well. Brattleboro was not always a large city, became that way with the rise of the technological age. The prestigious Brattleboro Technical Insitute played a big part of that, and graduates remained committed to the area. People from Brattleboro are affectionately referred to as, “Brats”. For volleyball, however, you will be at the Brattleboro Regional Transit Arena in the city and utilize the public transit system that was modernized by the entity from Banija.

The city these days has something for everyone, but it does not try to hide the fact that it caters more to the younger demographics then it does older citizens.

GRANDE MOUNTAIN

Grande Mountain is a big city and a deserving one, but it also does not have a great reputation throughout the matriarchy due to some disturbing gender rights issues that took place here in the past. In fairness to the city, a lot of that is so long ago that it should not even be mentioned anymore, but it may have made bigger Cassadagan entities hesitant on sponsoring the facility.

The city gets its name due to the fact that it is in the north-central mountainous portion of the nation. It might not be the season right now, but feel free to come back during the wintertime to enjoy the fantastic skiing opportunities here! This is the city where Male Equality Now keeps its headquarters, so you could always pay them a visit if you want to learn more about their recent accomplishments and future initiatives.

STARKSVILLE

“Everything’s better with Cocoa-bo!” proved to be the case with Starksville and the well-known company based in Turori. At first, it seemed like the company was looking to expand with a regional facility in Concord Heights, but it would be best in Starksville. This city had been in a growing state well before Cocoa-bo’s involvement in the city. It had been the case that Rutland was seen as the our best port city, but the city officials there did not keep up with the times and saw many businesses leave Rutland for Starksville. As the economy shifted, so did the population, and now the renovated Cocoa-bo Stadium and adjacent arena are ready to welcome fans of any competition. It has had group stage matches before, and while the schedule is still to be determined, it is probable that it will see playoff matches as well.

As a port city, there are plenty of beaches that one can enjoy, and nightlife opportunities abound. Historically, it does not have as deep of a history, as it sees itself as being about the future, instead of looking back at the past.

Cocoa-bo Stadium:
Stadium Dimensions: LF- 347 LCF- 370 CF- 411 RCF- 373 RF- 356

NEW LAKELAND

The city of New Lakeland was annexed by Cassadaigua a while ago, so it did not initially hold Cassadagan values. Because of that, there was always gender equality in the city. However, as it has become assimilated into our culture, that has changed slightly. Regardless, if you wanted to go somewhere in Cassadaigua that did not really feel like Cassadaigua, this was the place for you. It can be a difficult city to describe, because those that live here and the overall northwestern part of the country take pride in their heritage, but at the same time will bleed pink just like anyone else here does in terms of supporting the national team. Recently, teams from the city have been very successful.

WINCHESTER

Winchester is the anti-Brattleboro, meaning that while Brattleboro has a younger demographic, this city in the mountains has an older demographic. Ironically, it was once a small city that many older retired people migrated too in order to get away from big city life. However, since so many did this, they created a big city themselves. The locals don’t want you here, but they want your money. That is why they are willing to put up with you all coming here and spending your money in the community, so that it can re-circulate in the community and be gambled away by playing bingo or buying an insane amount of scratch off tickets.

This is not a place with much of a nightlife, unless playing bingo is something that you are looking to do, in which case, have at it!

RUTLAND

Even though we stated earlier that Starksville has taken over from Rutland in being the more well known port city, it is not as if Rutland has become a ghost town. There was question as to whether or not it would be used as a host city, but it’s place in Cassadagan sports history is too significant to pass up. The stadium is named after Courtney Ferguson, the first ever captain of the national team. Her time preceded that of our successful World Cup teams, but this is where she grew up, so the city still holds a unique place.

If you’re coming here, you can still find things to do on the port and some halfway decent beaches. The city itself seemed to focus all its efforts on the port, so while that area is very nice and attractive, it is the rest of the city that needs a makeover.

VICTORIAVILLE

This is a very nice stadium sponsored by the largest oil and gas company in the nation, which is Cassgo, located in the southwestern part of the country. Feel free to visit the stadium as you check out the arena where the volleyball games will be played. The city is often awarded games in tournaments like the World Cup so that those living in that portion of the country have close games that they can travel too. Those that live here do take a lot of pride in their hometown, and it arguably could be considered a little like Brattleboro without the technological influence.

Excerpts from QBS radio commentary.

“…Andreeva, beautiful sound off the bat, that’s a deep ball out to center. Ewing tracking it to the wall. But he just has to watch it! Where was this power in the domestic season, some Oranges fans might be wondering!? The Orange Grove a little bigger than the Frosty Dome though, as Kawakami scores. Andreeva with her fifth home run of the Classic. Another monster inning brewing here in the third…”

“…Phelps up to bat. Bases loaded, 2 outs. He’s already homered. Dutertre on the mound as this very small pitching staff struggles to keep the runs in check. Way inside, and it takes a piece of Phelps! Down on his haunches grimacing, but he will take his base, and Hisakawa will jog in to score on a bases loaded hit by pitch. Looks like Pierre is coming in, but not many options left if he can’t get out of a jam here…”

“…the runner is going. Strikes out hacking at one in the dirt, Phelps comes up with and rifles the throw in to second. Tamura’s tag is…good! A great strike-em-out-throw-em-out double play from Phelps retires the side here in the sixth…”

“…Walsh takes it inside for ball four. Tang struggling here, a little underused as a reliever this Classic but not making a strong case to be used as a closer. Bolton up to bat. Eight run lead still for the Things atop the ninth but two runners on now. Tang delivers, low, and the count is 1 – 0. Gets the sign. The pitch – ripped up the middle! Hisakawa with the diving catch!! And bounces up from the dirt to tag the runner!!! Unassisted double play from the shortstop to end the game. Quintessence of Dust move into first in the group with two to play…”

“…Kirk, grounded to left, Hisakawa swoops in and picks up with a throw to Tamura, who steps on base, and over to Kaufer. But Velasquez able to score anyway. Double play ball so no RBI counts for Kirk, and Kaito Nakajima surrenders the lead here at the top of the 2nd…”

“…Phelps with a rocket out to deep left, over Vance’s head – and over the fence! Phelps’s red hot bat just keeps going, his 4th homer of the Classic leads off the second as the Things reclaim the lead…”

“…smoked by Jiang! He got all of that one and that will soar down the left field line and … stay fair! Big two run shot here at the bottom of the eighth. Diaz left it high in the zone and Jiang nearly wrapped the bat around himself twice in his follow-through. 6 – 4 now, could there be a comeback brewing?…”

“…swing and a miss. Hold on. The umpire is … giving Holcomb the base! Catcher interference called on Phelps, who is hot about the call. Tang chewing ferociously as he faces bases loaded. Holcomb’s deep swing drawing the interference call. McCormick up to bat. They keep Tang in, lefty to lefty. Deals, on the corner, watched, called a strike. 0 – 1 on the batter, bases loaded, 1 out, 6 – 5 in the 9th. McCormick swings, hot shot on the ground to centre. Amazing play by Hisakawa to get across! Full stretch dive, turns and throws from her knees to home. Phelps tags the runner, quickly round, sharp throw to first – in time! Great double play, terrific defence by the Things to get out of that jam, and Phelps atones for his rare error with a very nice move to stop Holmes breaking up the play…”

“…Hisakawa fouls off another. 2 for 4 tonight with a homer and a double. Can she be the heroine one last time. Vega deals, sharp hit in the hole. But Williams will have a play on it. That’s the game, 6 – 5, a disappointing home defeat for the Things. But – hold on. We’re getting word from Chromatika, where the Sherpas have prevailed. Which means … the Things are through! Quintessence of Dust have qualified for the playoffs! Bemusing scenes as the Georgian players celebrating a win watch the team they’ve just beaten celebrating even harder…!”

“…not a day off, Arrighi has stressed. There’s still seeding to play for. But, with Hisakawa, Andreeva, Tamura and Phelps all sitting, it’s hard not to see him as getting his starters some rest. Fujioka to start, the openers experiment hasn’t proven entirely successful. I’d expect to see most of the gender-non-specific-bovine-pen getting a workout today. The knuckleballer Daki Chuan on the mound; the Things have hit her pretty well. Symonds to lead off, who began the Classic as a starter, slumped, but now has regained her place with the unfortunate injury to Wilson…”

“…Ananthan breaks for second! Jiang is up and firing the ball… waaaay over Hoggard’s head, even the tall man couldn’t reach that, and it’ll be into centre field, Ananthan can roll around to third. The Sherpas have been very conservative on the basepaths so far, so perhaps Jiang taken by surprise by what is just the second steal attempt of these six games, but his audition to retain his place behind the plate not going well…”

“…so not such a rest day for Andreeva, you sense Arrighi’s competitive instincts at slight odds with the desire for rest. That’s a stand-up double to drive in two, and the Things get on the scoreboard at last. Some discussion but looks like Daki Chuan is staying in…”

“…skimmer to Qiong, picked up on the hop by Lacroix, characteristic sidearm throw to first. That’s it! The Things claim another win and will finish the group stage atop the group. Not a perfect game and neither Lacroix nor Hoggard did anything to claim a starting spot once the regular infield duo return, but every win helps with seeding. Results pouring across the desk, still too early to say where the Things will end up. 19 wins puts them on the low side as group winners, so I’d think they’ll probably be just about either side of the 16-team mark…”

After a brief bump in the road, the Sarzonian national baseball team finished the group stage by winning their final two games to end up with a 22-8 record, good for fifth place among the remaining 32 teams in the knockout rounds and as Group 2 champions by a seven-game margin over Northwest Kalactin, which qualified over Megistos on head to head run differential after finishing level in the head to head results at three wins apiece.

The Stars overcame a three-game losing streak that essentially only mattered in terms of final seeding. The Stars could have leapfrogged over Cassadaigua had they won even one of the three losses, including a defeat to last place Darmen. They could have at least drawn level with No. 3 Nova Anglicana with two wins from the three matches, and might even have passed No. 2 Zwangzug with convincing victories. The only team the Stars would not have been able to catch was No. 1 Newmanistan, which finished the group stage at 26-4 for the top overall seed.

Sarzonia's reward for their 22-8 record will be a date with Terre Septentironale, which finished third in Group 1 with an 18-12 record in a group that included group winners Ko-oren at 21-9 and runners up Kohnhead at 20-10. After a travel date to allow both teams to arrive in Winchester, the Stars will send ace lefthander Jeff Parrish out to start Game 1 of the best-of-five series against the Nordiques, who counter with their ace, lefty Rusty Castillo. Mark Conroy will get the ball for the Stars in Game 2 as he pitches against fellow righty Travis O'Rear. If the Stars lead the series two games to none, manager Geoff Yancey said he might start fifth starter Alton Long in Game 3. Otherwise, Brian Lynch would get the ball for Sarzonia.

"Right now, we're focused on studying the scouting reports to figure out how we're going to handle our lineup in Games 1 and 2," he said. For one thing, Luke Brinkley will begin the first two games at Winchester City Lottery Stadium as the designated hitter, batting cleanup since the Stars will be playing as the home side in Games 1, 2, and 5 if necessary. The Nordiques will be the home team for Game 3 and a Game 4 if necessary, and the Stars would not be able to use Brinkley at DH. Yancey said he would address that "when it's time to fill out the lineup card."

"I don't want to give away our intent," he said, adding that the Stars "may not" stay with their projected starting lineup for any of the matches in the series.

"We know that Castillo is a tough lefty," he said. "Our strength is from the right side of the plate, so we're going to go with our normal lineup against him, but we might make a few substitutions against O'Rear."

The Kerlagrad Courier

Cursed they might not be, but tempers have frayed again among the Zwangzug Zebras announcers--this time, at least, for baseball-related reasons. Tiffany Fletcher was in charge of filling out the nation's "official" bracket for the WBC playoffs, but made such questionable choices as picking Nova Anglicana to win it all despite not knowing any of their players' names, and expecting Zwangzug to fall in the round of 16 to Tikariot (a prediction also made by more optimistic Tikariot fans).

"Look, you can't expect me to be objective about this," Fletcher understated, "so I figured I'd hedge, and rather than be accused of having a rooting interest, err on the side of underestimating my homeland. That way at least if we lose, I have other stuff to brag about." When her loyalty to the country was questioned, Fletcher went on, "It's not like I could conspire to throw a game, could I? I mean, I'm just a broadcaster."

Asked for further clarification about her faith in the Nova Anglicana Lions, Fletcher explained, "well I wasn't just going to pick [#1 seeds with a dominant 26-4 record] Newmanistan to comfortably win it all, was I? That'd be lazy [and sensible], and not even in the good LAZY [archaic domestic allusion] way. I mean, I could have had the Rockets lose to their recent World Cup co-hosts Drawkland in the semifinals, but...come on, Drawkland would have found new ways to choke."

Fletcher's rationale for picking the Quintessence of Dust Things to emerge over Cassadaigua was "they have a freaking moonbase. They...oh, these games are all held in the host nation? Which happens to be Cassadaigua with all their home fans? Okay never mind, I just like to jinx the Things, then. Sorry."

At press time, Padma Shaukat was unsuccessfully trying to handicap the future rounds of the ongoing Chess960 tournament.
