In spite of the complaints about the format of this Golden edition of the World Baseball Classic, the Sarzonian national baseball team are sitting in a good position right now.

The Stars are 9-3 heading into the off day, two games clear of runners up Valanora at the top of the Group 2 table. The top of manager Geoff Yancey's rotation appears to be rounding into form nicely. Offensively, they're getting timely offence for the most part.

For the most part largely because Sarzonia have only been able to use designated hitter Luke Brinkley in the cleanup spot for games at Fleetwood Park. The other teams in Group 2 have all opted not to use the DH. It's a subject that bitterly divides the baseball multiverse, but Yancey pointed out that the rule even divides Sarzonians.

"The Incorporated League still use the designated hitter whilst the Sarzonian League doesn't," Yancey said. "If an Incorporated League team win the Sarzonian Series and were to play a Delaclav team in another Cyanea Series, they would be at a disadvantage at the matches south of the border."

As a matter of fact, speaking of the Cyanea Series, Sarzonia bench coach Brad Howland managed the Woodstock Mountaineers in what has thus far been the only Cyanea Series ever played, a marathon series that went the full seven games that saw the Mountaineers win each of the four games by one run, including three extra inning games. One of the Quinniville Conquistadors victories was a 15-0 bludgeoning in Game 5. Game 7 lasted 22 innings with Woodstock prevailing 5-4.

"That was an epic series," Howland said. "So many great memories."

Lefthander Jeff Parrish vindicated Yancey's decision to bump him from No. 3 in the rotation to become the team's ace with a dominant complete game shutout to open the World Baseball Classic against Megistos. Righty Mark Conroy, the previous ace, also pitched well after struggling in his debut against Northwest Kalactin in Sarzonia's 5-1 loss.

"Mark took [the demotion to No. 2] as a wake-up call," pitching coach Noah Channing said. "He treated it as motivation to pitch better."

Brinkley also has worked to get better as he spent hours improving his fielding skills in the hopes that he could also platoon at first base with Cody Frazier and get at bats against tough lefties. Third base and infield coach Lyle Menifee said Brinkley's defence has become "more passable each day," and he said Yancey no longer worries about the prospect of starting Brinkley at first. However, Yancey added that Frazier would likely be a defensive replacement in a tight game.

"When we need a glove at first, that's why Frazier's there," he said. Frazier has also been shagging fly balls in left and right field so he could be available there in an extra innings situation.

"Anything I can do to help the team," he said.

COULD CAPITAL STADIUM SOON BE REPLACED?

HAPILOPPER CITY – The concept of replacing Hapilopper City’s legendary concrete donut is one of the most unpopular ideas in Hapiloppian sport, but there appears to be some growing concern, from multiple parties, over the future of the 53-year old Capital Stadium, still seen as Hapilopper’s de facto national stadium.

The stadium has come into significant prominence in the last five years as the home of the Hapilopper National Baseball Team, the Hapilopper National Football Team and its successor Team Hapilopper. Some experts, in fact, have suggested that the success and popularity of both national teams have saved Capital Stadium from facing a wrecking ball, or a replacement. Every time one of those two teams compete against international competition in the old stadium, it is more often than not filled to capacity with over 60,000 screaming fans, a sensation that fans and players alike have said they would not want to lose.

“If we replaced Cap Stadium with a baseball-only park, I think the national team would lose a bit of its charm,” said third baseman Leroy Hunnisett, who has started for the team since the beginning. “Part of the fun of coming here is being surrounded, as far as the eye can see, by your fellow Hapiloppians. They get a little rude, get a little wild, but that’s part of the fun.”

Hunnisett suggested a new ballpark would have a “sanitizing effect” on Hapiloppian baseball.

“This place is a throwback to a lot of people’s childhoods,” Hunnisett said. “It’s not the nicest park in Hapilopper. Far from it, in fact. The turf is too hard, the clubhouses – until this past offseason – were dingy and dirty, and the amenities are, shall we say, a little behind the times. But that’s part of its charm. People who come here to Cap Stadium don’t come here for amenities. They come here to see us whip up on another team, and if we went to some other park, it wouldn’t be as fun.”

Bill Norris, a season-ticket holder for the Hapilopper City Nationals since 1989, agreed.

“I think I’ve heard at least once per week for the last 20 years a sportswriter talking about how much of an antiquated dump Capital Stadium is,” Norris said. “They talk about wanting the Hap City government to let a team build a baseball-only park, but the thing is, we like this place. This old place is part of Hapilopper City’s heritage and it just wouldn’t be the same if they got rid of it.”

Officially, the National League of Hapilopper, who rents out Capital Stadium for the Hapilopper National Baseball Team, has taken no stance on the future of the park. However, James Parkhurst, commissioner of the NLH, has stated in the past that they have been in discussions with the Hapilopper City government, about a new ballpark.

In addition, rumors persist about the NLH’s look at other cities to host national team games. One rumor would put the HNBT at BankTrust Park, the widely-reviled park in the north Surrey suburbs. That park was controversially built several years ago as a replacement for another park in downtown Surrey, and has been criticized for its “artificial” atmosphere, as well as its ease of access, or more specifically, lack thereof.

In fact, the park is so unpopular among fans in the Surrey area that the NLH approved a second franchise in the area to utilize the old park in downtown Surrey.
Parkhurst has not commented on those rumors, but has stated in the past that they would like to help the Surrey Wolves, who play at BankTrust, an opportunity to use their park.

Hapilopper City regulation could prevent baseball-only, football-only alternatives


Perhaps the biggest obstacle in the way of a baseball-only venue in Hapilopper City is a 1992 city code, popularly known as “The Camden Rule,” that prevents the city from approving public financing for stadiums meant for one specific sport.

Named for Jake Camden, the Mayor of Hapilopper City at the time, the Hapilopper City Nationals was contemplating the construction of a 45,000 seat, baseball-only stadium, while the Hapilopper City Metropolitans, the top gridiron team in Hapilopper, was contemplating a 70,000 seat, football-only stadium. Both teams wanted public financing for their two stadiums, which would have been built on the site of Capital Stadium around 1997 or 1998.

Camden, known as one of the most conservative politicians in Hapilopper at the time, argued that both stadiums would have cost taxpayers somewhere in the neighborhood of $750 million, a price tag that he made clear he was not OK with.

“First of all, Hapilopper City residents already pay too much tax as it is to begin with,” Camden said in 1992. “We’re paying way too much on a road project that’s not going to be complete for another 20 years, and now these two teams want to build their own stadiums? What are we going to use them for when they’re not playing?”

Despite threats from both teams to move to other cities, the Hapilopper City Council passed “The Camden Rule” with a vote of 5-4, and has not been repealed since, despite repeated attempts from some Hapilopper City Council members.

One of those members is Anthony Burton, who represents the east-side 5th Ward in the Hap City Council. Burton argues that economic development has been stymied by “The Camden Rule.”

“By sticking with an antiquated multi-purpose stadium, we’re losing out on a lot of redevelopment in the area,” Burton said. “To build two different stadiums would be pricey, yes, but that price would be cancelled out by the economic development that would come from a revitalized area.”

Burton said he has spoken to representatives from the NLH and from the former Hapilopper Football Association about what they’d like to see in the area moving forward.

“They’ve talked about a joint effort,” Burton said. “On one end, you’d have a baseball stadium, about 43,000 seats and a nice view of the West River and Conyers just over the river. On the other end, you’d have a football stadium, 90,000 or so seats, maybe 100,000, that could host a World Cup final, an AOCAF final, a Cup of Harmony final, whatever.”

Burton said in between the stadiums would be high-end mixed-use real estate, including apartments, restaurants, pubs and stores.

“I get that such a project would cost a ton of money, but just looking at that price tag, we’re missing the big picture here,” Burton said. “We’re missing out on revitalizing the Capital Stadium district because some conservative thinks we’d be spending too much money.”

Camden, who was voted out of office in 2002, defended “The Camden Rule” by stating such stadiums would cost Hapilopper City taxpayers way too much money, especially when the city is working its way through several problems.

“I’ve said, since I was in office, that our infrastructure needs to be fixed before we think of paying for stadiums that we probably don’t need,” Camden said. “I understand the whole need for revitalizing the Capital Stadium area, but there is nothing stopping a developer from going in there themselves and building something new. There’s nothing stopping any of the sports leagues from doing the same.”

Camden also pointed out that “The Camden Rule” does not apply if such facilities are privately funded.

“A lot of people, and the media as well, either miss out or deliberately gloss over the fact that if someone wants to pay for it themselves, there’s nothing stopping them from building whatever they want,” Camden said. “If the Nationals want to build a stadium for themselves, if the national team wants to build a stadium for themselves, we’re not going to stop them if they pay for it themselves. I’ve said that from the beginning. What I have a problem with is when taxpayers have to pay for two expensive ballparks when they don’t need to.”

Stadium has seen renaissance, renovation in recent years


Partially from Hapilopper City’s resistance to fund new stadiums, the Capital Stadium Group has made do instead with renovating the old ballpark, something that the city government has been alright with funding instead.

One such renovation included new clubhouses for the home and visiting teams. The new clubhouses made their debut before the last NLH season, and features a number of amenities such as a large meeting area, televisions, a buffet area, and an open bar complete with a staff bartender for both the home and visitors, as well as ultra-modern showers and training areas.

The new clubhouses have received rave reviews from players, including from shortstop Jerome Hayden, who remarked on twii.tur that he “wanted to build something like this for (his) own home.”

Other renovations include “The Scouts Club,” a new plush area in the front few rows behind home plate, which includes a restaurant, buffet area and a bar; and new luxury boxes between the second and third decks.

There are also talks about putting in a more modern artificial turf surface, or even replacing the turf with a natural grass surface. Capital Stadium’s HCNTurf, first installed in the early 1970s, has been criticized over the years for its rock-hard characteristics, as well as its tendency to send baseballs bouncing wildly like superballs.

A lot of the reason for the stadium’s resurgence in popularity has been its use by Hapilopper’s national sports teams over the years. Over 60,000 fans regularly pack Capital Stadium for baseball and soccer matches, and has become known as one of the loudest venues in Hapiloppian sports.

“The Pipe Dream”: Building a possible World Cup final host


One such motivator for building a replacement venue has been a possible stadium to host a World Cup final somewhere in the future. While nothing official has been announced, rumors have spread for years over Hapilopper’s desire to host such an event.

Per Hapilopper City regulations, the stadium would host both baseball and soccer, and per rumored World Cup Committee regulations, would have a seating capacity somewhere between 90,000 to 110,000, which would make it the largest non-auto racing stadium in Hapilopper.

There are also questions over where such a stadium would be built. According to recently-released documents, the Hapilopper National Exhibition Committee, which oversees the annual Hapilopper National Exhibition, has expressed interest in building the stadium on the Exhibition grounds, which are located on the northwest side of Hapilopper City.

If such a stadium was built on the grounds, HapEx Committee members have discussed the possibility of a “Hapilopper World Cup Exhibition,” which would move the National Exhibition and all its surrounding events, including the wildly-popular Super Skychief 500 NSSCRA race, to surround a World Cup Final located in the stadium. The stadium would also host the HC Nationals and the Hapilopper National Baseball Team.

Rod Hargrove, executive director of the HapEx Committee, told the Herald that any such stadium is merely in the planning stages right now.

“We’ve been talking about it for a few years,” Hargrove said. “We need to make sure it’s going to work for us before we commit to it. What will it mean for our events at HapEx? Will we lose the dirt track? Will we lose the agricultural grounds? Will we lose the technology center? What about the horse park? There’s so many questions that need to be answered before we put pen to paper.”

Hargrove also said, however, that they would love nothing more than to host a final of a major sporting tournament, such as a World Cup, or a World Baseball Classic.

“I think we can show the rest of the world that Hapilopper City can be one of the greatest hosts in all the multiverse,” Hargrove said. “But right now, it’s the pipe dream for all of us. Where will be we be in ten years? Will we have the stadium? Hard to say.”

Results for our Daskies were better but confusing. The first two games were wins for Team Daskel, who finally could beat Tikariot in this WBC. Kojima was assigned for that very important game, and both he and the bullpen were strong. In the batter department, Oshimura and Ben had homeruns, something quite rare for a team relying in small ball tactics, strategy who gave them the lead in the third period, with back to back hits. Ben scored a solo homerun in the fourth inning, while Oshimura scored 2-run homer in the eighth.

Now, the confusing part came with their last game against Thea Litters. The Daskies had a really bad day, with tons of unforced errors in defense that built a wall of runs against them. The ninth inning sparked something inside the dugout, but two doubles and one sac fly could not stand a chance for a comeback|

“Mr Nakamura, quick, they announced the next big conference! Get your things ready”

Nakamura Go didn’t even had a minute to write more about the last games. He promptly saved the document (three, four… five times to be sure it wouldn’t disappear), took his old sound recorder and left the office, running across the corridors of the well maintained hotel. There were rumors of the contents of this press conference, some of them pretty wild. With An as the head coach, anything could be true.

At the hall door, the security staff was checking for credentials. For a minute he thought he had forgotten his press pass, but thankfully it was inside his pocket. Go promised himself to always wear the damned thing after that, even if he hated the feel of the little strip of cloth against his neck.

The room was full with cameras and microphones. At distance Go recognized a couple of friends of different radio stations, newspapers and TV channels. He couldn’t do anything but a little wave, as the cameras started to shoot photos like crazy, a war of flashes and clicks. An just had entered, followed by Sakamoto, his right hand.

“First, I want to thank you all for your presence. This press conference was held with very short notice, and I hope we did not interrupt your itinerary too much. Now, on the crucial information”

As An talked, the reporters were more and more in awe. Nakamura felt his hand rise involuntarily. Many questions started to pill up in his head.

“As you have noticed, this WBC format is one of the most demanding things we have encountered as a team. This is a real issue, and for that, we’ve decided to make a lot of changes for the roster. Every three games, and evaluating performance and fatigue, we’ll give the players a chance to recover from the games and the traveling, rotating them when needed. The pitcher rotation will change. Nakamura will assume as a starter pitcher from now onwards, and Ryū Takumi will be assigned to long relief duty. For the set-up, we’ve decided to erase the role, giving Tama more flexibility as a reliever. I get this is really confusing, so we’re open to questions"

“Mr An, it’s Nakamura from C8 sportwire! Who will start as position players?”

“The core have not changed that much. Shibaike will stay for the next three games. The only changes will be Oshimura and Somei, who will be replaced by Rokutani and Fuji. They will assume the same batting order. Another question?”

South Newlandian teams looking to pick up international players

The SNBL may not be the most prestigious baseball league, but most of the teams are attempting to in importance; especially with potential international club baseball on the horizon. The twelve team league may also well see an expansion in the coming years, so that would also open up even more room for new players. The twelve-team league features teams from all over the country and from most of the big cities as well, playing a quadruple-round robin in two-game series; and they have received money from the South Newlandian Baseball Association to run an international ad campaign under the motto “Next Base – South Newlandia?” in multiple other countries known for being good at baseball. Robert Wahlja, head of the SNBA: “It’s a real shame the SNBL features almost no foreigners at the moment. If we want to stay competitively, we need to change that – and the campaign has already seen some early success. Center Fielder Lucca Hahn, a 24 year old Kohnheadian, has joined the Blue Sox as the first international national team player, and there are even some negotiations with Llamanean players at the moment”. The SNBL might indeed be an interesting place to join – the young league is steadily improving, and because of the high demand, players can pretty much just pick a team they want to join. Wahlja hopes to “[…] have at least a dozen international players join the league, if everything works out […]”, and while that may seem like a lot, there are quite a players out there in strong baseball nations. Whether the campaign will ultimately be successful will have to be seen, but Wahlja is confident: “This is going to work out. Trust me!”

Well, the Institute for true Sciences performing like it did was not exactly a surprise. With only two wins and a run differential of about -100; they finish in last by quite a margin. More surprising teams to land at the bottom were RUoN, who lost their pitching ace early in the season and never really could recover as a whole, and the RBU, finishing on only an even record and in ninth. Of course, there were some teams exceeding expectations as well, with the NLS and the KMS both close to the playoffs, and, of course, the EVSI. The science institute finished with an impressive 18-8 record, tied with the big favourites from EVU, only falling behind them after the tiebreakers. Behind them, the NCfIR and L3C complete the playoff picture. Both teams were, different to EVSI, held in high regard, but a 17-9 record for both is still very impressive. With that, the semifinal series are known, and both will be held in Elephant Valley: EVU hosts the Community College, and EVSI hosts the Newport College, each in Best-of-three series. The winners will meet up in the final for another Best of three series to decide the championship.

Hill has fantastic stretch as Lions win comfortably, closely


Kelvin Hill is a new starter this year at second base for the Nova Anglicana Lions national baseball team after spending time as a bench player in the past few World Baseball Classics. Prior to the Classic, he was excited about his new role and chance to help the team. "I'm happy to be able to contribute to the team, and starting is a great honor. I'll do my best to represent Nova Anglicana and help lead us to victory," Hill said. But this Classic has not exactly gone as planned so far. Despite hitting third in the lineup, Hill has barely hit over .200 and has struck out in multiple key situations. Despite this, the Lions had gone 7-2 and Hill wasn't fazed. "As long as the team is winning, I'm happy. I can still contribute in the field and I'm just gonna keep grinding at the plate. It'll come around."

Well, Hill has turned it around these past three games, batting well and contributing several clutch plays in the field. In the first game, against the United States of Devonta, Hill was 0-1 with a walk through his first two turns at bat, but had made a fine diving stop and throw to first in support of Rex Boyd as the Lions clung to a 1-0 lead going into the sixth inning, courtesy of a fifth-inning homer by Jerome Duplantier. Boyd struck out to begin the sixth, but Erik Austin drew a walk and Luke Mills pulled a ball past the first baseman to put runners on third and second with one out. Hill took a 3-1 fastball and drove it off the wall in left-center for a two-run double, putting the Lions up 3-0. He would later score on Matthew Gilbert's two-run homer and draw another walk in the eighth as the Lions defeated the Devontans, 5-2.

In the next game, the Lions traveled to The Sarian for the second time in the Classic, but fell behind 1-0 entering the fifth inning. Hill had singled in his first at-bat and flown out in his second when he stepped to the plate in the fifth. Trevor Goodwin had singled to lead off the inning, Cory Sharpe had bunted him over, Erik Austin had drawn another walk, but Luke Mills struck out to bring up Hill with two outs. The first pitch was a strike, but the second was wild, moving the runners to third and second, while the third missed the strike zone again. Hill sat dead red and lined a single over the leaping Saari shortstop, scoring both runners and putting the Lions up, 2-1. In the seventh inning, he came up with the bases loaded. Goodwin was at third, Austin at second, and Mills at first with one down. Noting that the outfield and the infield were playing him slightly to pull, Hill stepped into a pitch and drove it over the first baseman's head, down the right field line. It bounced fair and then rolled into the right field corner, giving everyone aboard time to score and Hill enough time to motor into third with a stand-up triple. That gave the Lions a 5-1 lead in a game they would eventually win 8-3, though he would strike out in his final at-bat.

In the final game the Lions have played so far, they faced United Hemand Insia at home in Londinium. They had defeated UHI 4-2 in their first matchup and 3-2 in the second, and this match was no exception to the close-game trend. Hill had struck out and walked in his two plate appearances when he came to the plate with two outs in the fifth inning and the game tied 1-1. The Lions had had some chances to score in the first four innings, picking up four baserunners, but only cashing in one. With two outs, Erik Austin and Luke Mills had both reached, and the Lions didn't want to waste this one. Hill got a 1-0 curveball and bashed it deep into the bleachers in left, giving the Lions a 4-1 lead and him his first homer of the competition. Although UHI would come back to take a 5-4 lead in the seventh, Austin blasted a shot into the harbor in the bottom of the inning to tie it at five. Hill grounded out to start the eighth, and the rest of the Lions team followed suit, going down in order in the eighth, ninth, and tenth innings. But Hill led off to begin the eleventh and slapped a ball to right for a leadoff single. "Repetitive?" said Alfred. "Not really. I mean, Kerlagrad's another city, but the culture is different there--they have different food, there's a few people who still use Cyrillic. And apparently their newspaper is very different." ("Different," in this context, was a euphemism not for "illegiblly abbreviated" or "in a weird dialect," but "taking truthiness a little too far." This hadn't stopped the Courier from being widely-read, of course.)

"I mean, this quest seems like a worse rip-off of the Biblical story about the Three Kings from the east."

"Well first of all," said Alfred, "they weren't kings, they were more--wise men, astrologers. And secondly, there weren't three of them, there might have been a lot more in the caravan. I mean, carrying all those gifts a long way across unfamiliar territory would have been difficult. They didn't have trains."

"You seem pretty well-versed in the details."

"I was raised Calvinist." Alfred shrugged. "Now more of a syncretist, obviously, but it's hard to miss this kind of stuff in Geneva."

"What does the font in your Bible have to do with anything?"

"The font?"

"Isn't Geneva that cute sans-serif one?"

"No, no, it's a city. Southwest of Boruncia."

Buck blinked.

"Look, I don't know the geography of all the places in Super-Llamaland either, and I'm going to forget where most of these Zwangzug cities are once I leave. Give me a break."

"It's not you," said Buck, "I just don't know how all these countries fit onto a map, is all."

"We just came from the FTC, which looks like two ripoffs of very enormous but distinct places thrown together haphazardly on opposite sides of a river, and you're worried how all these countries fit onto a map?"

"Can you keep it down?" called a man on the opposite side of the train. "I'm trying to sleep."

"Sorry," said Alfred, wondering how many times he'd heard some version of their conversation.

The lines were long at popular restaurant "The Green Bear," so they wound up getting dinner at the slightly less crowded "Slide Rule," famous for its rather generic "fried vertebrate on a stick" special. There were no babies, although there was a young man who seemed interested in their travel. "Could I do a feature about you?" he asked. "It's for my blog."

"Sure," said Alfred, at the same time as Buck was saying "No."

He blinked. Alfred said, "Give us a minute."

"I don't trust this country," Buck said.

"You've been wandering around in its cities and trains without incident."

"I mean, the people. What if word of this gets back to the Composite Minister? What if she's out to get us?"

"She wouldn't even meet with us in person, why would she read some random dude's blog?"

"Have you seen how social media is?" said Buck. "There's no explaining what algorithms will decide to display on her computer. It's all...non-linear weightings and opaque."

"True," said Alfred, then coughed on his fried vertebrate. "Wait a minute, what do you know about social media? The only thing you use is a carrier pigeon."

"Precisely," said Buck. "Why would I want to subject myself to that?"

"Okay, fair. But still. The Kerlagrad media is notoriously unreliable. If anything, having ourselves profiled will make us sound stupid, rather than threatening."

"All right," Buck conceded. "But you do the talking."

Pablo Maraville spun the ball in his hand as he stared down Meghan Forman. It was the top of the ninth in Ponyburgh with two outs. The Pinkos still had a fat zero on the scoreboard, having only eked out two hits and a walk from the Karditani ace and trailing by seven. The comeback could still happen--after all, this is baseball, no clock to run out--but it'd take Drawkian levels of collapse for that to happen. But if it was going to happen? It'd get started with their slugger, someone who'd crested 40 dingers in her last domestic season (in however many games they happen to play in the United Pink States) while hitting nearly .350.

Behind the plate Robert called for a first-pitch changeup low and away. Pablo'd been jamming all his fastballs in for first-pitch strikes all night, why not mix it up a bit? Not like she could do much with it even making contact--assuming he hit his spot, which of course he would--and for once he has a real defense behind him to handle a squib of a hit and not turn it into a comedy of errors that ends with a runner on third. He wound up, let it go, and... she watched in drop just a little too low and get called for a ball. Balls.

Alright, now the call's for four-seamer middle-in. It's a dangerous location, but then most any location that isn't diving low and away is dangerous against a hitter like this. It's a good spot for making sure they can't get around fast enough, hopefully minimizing the damage; sure. Wind up, deliver, and... she takes a hack that sends it high into the sky, but peeling backwards and over the netting behind home plate. A pegasus nabs it and hands it off to their kid.

A low two-seamer breaking just inside? Naw, Pablo shakes that off. As much as he likes jamming hitters with that pitch she was too on the last pitch to go back to the inside well again. Ah, four seamer up and away, that's the ticket. Need some high cheese in here--oh shit she's taken it the other way, is Art gonna have a play--no, no, that's well and truly gone. Well, shit. There goes the shutout and here comes Gale out of the dugout.

Ignace Tremaux and his uncle, Jacques, descended the steps to the basement of Jacques’ home in Baie-Nord. Looking around, the walls were full of old images. There were pictures of baseball players and teams from the old days. Replica pennants and trophies from the Ile-Perrot Epee’s three world championship titles. Over in the corner, some old board games - RTRapidTransit foremost among them. And on the bookshelves, any book about baseball you could think of was there, alongside almanacs from every season of the Ligue Base-ball de Sicoutimont - both pre and post-Revolution.

The pride of Jacques’ collection, however, was the autographed bat signed by every member of the World Baseball Classic 26 team. It was safely in a case, surrounded by newspaper articles and magazines from that time featuring the team. Game balls and jerseys filled up the rest of the space on the walls. Jacques sat down and put on his glasses.

“So, you want to get in touch with the members of the golden team.”

“Yes,” Ignace replied.

Jacques laughed. “And what, are they expected to say that they were able to do what they did because of Pomeroy?”

“Well…”

“So yes. It’s ok, Ignace, we’ve all learned how to deal with this life. Let me get my papers in order here….”

Uncle Jacques pulled out a fading binder with the title ‘Team Sicoutimont, WBC 26 - Media Guide,’ and lay it on the desk in front of him. He flipped open a few pages - smiling as he remembered the good old days. Finally, he settled on the page with the team’s roster. Then, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a little blue notebook.

Jacques nodded at Ignace. “If I ever lost this little thing, you’d never hear from me again.”

Ignace glanced over to see Jacques open up the book, which contained hundreds of names and phone numbers. People he had met over the course of a life well spent, whether they be foreign journalists, friends from his youth in Ile-Perrot, family and countless baseball players. In his younger days, Jacques was known as the ‘encyclopedia of the LBS’. If a player had swung a bat even once in the league, Jacques could tell you anything about him. Now, Ignace knew why.

Jacques flipped through the pages. “How many of them do you need?”

“Probably three or four will work,” Ignace said.

Jacques nodded. “Let’s see…” he said as he cross-referenced things in both books in front of him. “You’ll have to forgive me, I’m not what I used to be.”

Ignace smiled. “Take as long as you need.” The younger Tremaux glanced around the walls, and pulled a book off the shelf: How the Ile-Perrot Epee Conquered the World. He read a few pages before putting it back, taking more interest in Alfonso Soriano: A Baseball Life. Soriano had been one of the stars of the WBC 26 team, its designated hitter, before later on becoming a manager himself of the St-Simeon Mets - later known as Metropolitain. After reading a few paragraphs, Ignace continued to wander before he was called back by Jacques.

“So, what I can tell you. Cross these 7 off the list - they won’t be picking up the phone, unfortunately. Perhaps 10 years ago this would’ve been easier, but… what can I tell you. The last thing I heard of Xavi Esquinardes was that he’d left the country, so I don’t think he’ll be coming back. Jaeg Nordstrom… for some reason I think he left too, but I can’t quite remember.”

“What about Alfonso Soriano?”

“He might be managing the team, haha. He’s still kicking around the LBS, he was with Sainfoin last season. We can definitely try him. I would say these five-” Jacques handed Ignace the media guide with freshly circled names “-are our best bet.”

Boullion Carvier. Alfonso Soriano. Loic St-Ignace. Carlos Santa Maria. Fernand Dantes. Ignace had seen their names before, watched them play baseball before - he knew they were legends. “So, what are they all up to today?”

“Boullion is a scout with Epeistes. Soriano, obviously, a manager. Loic St-Ignace… I think he’s living in Beaudette now, actually. Carlos Santa Maria used to run a sports bar in St-Simeon, but that was before… this, of course. Now I think he’s just retired in San Cristobal. Fernand Dantes actually lives in this area, he worked in the Department of Sport for many years in fact. Before your time there. Let me call him up.” Jacques dialled his cell phone, hitting the buttons one finger at a time. Ignace laughed to himself, then went back to browsing the shelves.

Why the Mets Always Win was a funny title in Ignace’s mind - the St-Simeon Mets had been the most successful club in the LBS pre-revolution, but post-revolution, Metropolitain were famous for their long title drought. Ignace was getting towards the older books now - and he had to smile as he saw a copy of On the Idea of National Durability lying covered in dust on the shelf. One more book caught his eye, however: St-Girard Festivals - Season 2012 Media Guide. Who were the St-Girard Festivals? Ignace generally knew most of the teams of the past, and their players - but this was drawing a total blank.

He opened the book to page one, and began to read. The Festivals were a club in the Ligue Mineur de Base-ball, the development league for the LBS back in the day, so it seemed. As with many minor league clubs, however, their history was tumultuous: this was the 4th edition of the Festivals franchise, with previous editions in cities like Ile-Bizard, Vasal and St-Pierre before relocating to the St-Simeon suburb. Why did Uncle Jacques have this book, though? The answer would come on page 3.

Ignace knew Jacques had played baseball. Ignace never knew Jacques was good at baseball. Drafted by the Epee? Runner-up for Rookie of the Year? Who won it? Ignace flipped through the pages, and laughed - Fidel Sanchez, the ace pitcher for the WBC 26 team.

Ignace looked at his uncle, who was still laughing on the phone. When he hung up, however, he called him. “Uncle Jacques?”

“Yes?”

“You never told me you were this good at baseball,” holding up the guide.

Jacques smiled. “I was alright,” he said.

“How come you never made it to the LBS?”

“Flip to the end.”

Ignace did just that, and found a newspaper clipping. ”Broken Arm ends season for Epee Prospect Tremaux” Ignace looked up at his uncle.

“I was never the same player after that. I played a few more seasons in the minors, but when the Festivals folded a few years later, rather than look for a new team, I decided to find a career.” Jacques smiled. “But if I never broke that arm, I’d never have met Fidel, or Marie, or be sitting here today. It all works out in the end.”

Ignace smiled back at him, but for a moment he could sense his Uncle dreaming - dreaming of what it could’ve been like had he made it as a big-time baseball star. “Anyways. Fernand Dantes said he’ll drop by after lunch. He’s got updated numbers for a few of the guys, and might be able to help us a bit more.”

“Perfect,” said Ignace. It was all starting to come together.

Gavin de Ramaut chuckled, raising both his hands to suggest that there was never a doubt on his mind about it. It was clear to him that people still held restraints in this era of excessive confidence and degeneracy, and that the Quebecois people always valued sacrifice above most virtues in life.

Of course, that's partly how they won so many wars, including the two in the past decade. But then, sacrifice had also meant knowing when to let go, like when to cut ties with its territories when asked to, and that's where the Quebecois, while not excellent, stood well above other former Empires of the early/late Modern period. 'While he always had that that temper of a fire, he knew to how to control it. He had to swallow the pains and the flames, make another bargain with the devil...and call it the night.’

'So what happened then? As you know, I come from Lecavalier generation, having born three years after the Plague.' Dr. Heo asked, trying not to emphasise his youth as an element of surprise. One of the things that he had learned fairly quickly when living abroad and also travelling beyond the Interrealm portal to the so-called RLverse was that the generation-by-generation differentiations and tensions were more than memes. Sure, they had existed back home, but it was mostly for the comedic sakes and minor uses in literature or musical theatre, where you'd use that to separate and distinguish those who had grown up in 1980s, 1990s or lord knows however they separated the eras in the new century. Or if you want a simpler term...millennials.

'He had a duel with the devil, where he turned himself into a living fire and face the ghouls of the night,' the jolly voice of Gavin de Ramaut rang with slight tremor, as he wiggled his left shoulder. Most in the pub didn't notice the twitch to see that it was abnormal; the noise had distracted everybody else to the topic discussed on their immediate vicinity. 'And so he did, swore off the devil, and then struck a peace deal set to last for ninety-nine years.'

'Well that's good...albeit with a trade-off.' Dr. Heo said, trying to remain calm but beyond bewilderment. He quietly looked around the setting again, and wondered for a brief second on where the late Dr. Pineau, as well as her three children were. 'I wonder if the young Arsene is here.' Arsene-Pierre Kim, their third (and only biological child between the two) son, happened to be an up-and-coming politician while a Masters student at Univ. de Montreal.

He’s a rascal, cigarette-smoking Leon (ooc: imagine a Quebecois equivalent of ‘chad’ combined with ‘karen’), whose infamy has slayed all those in his way as if the Dragon in St. George’s way. From a conference, he once remembered hearing from a colleague about the youngster, then at University of Kingston where they did not cross paths but happened to know a bunch of mutuals through Trinity College. I do not know how a creature like him roams so freely, coming from admirable parents like Agnes-Leanne and Sang-Doh...

Ignoring the assuming thread around his head, they looked at each other with complacent air, and then smiled once more. The story of the bargain with the devil, and the city’s deuxieme-fin-de-siecle lumination thoroughly erected himself up with excitement, and both Dong-Soo and Gavin couldn’t help but to feel the tingling upon their spines as they talked about the deceased.

The story of the dead clearly filled up the house now, and each of them had something to say about Dr. Kim. One student, an earlier undergraduate two years above Gavin, recalled seeing the explosions in the sky as the children waltzed in the mini-squares (do they call them parkettes?). Another, a peer of his all the way back to Kim Sang-Doh’s schoolboy days at Ginnidera Grammar, talked about how the smurfs frolicked above the deck of a cruise ship, committing acts of debauchery in the presence of the wild animals who too caught themselves engaging on it. This was followed by a mere postgraduate whose supervision was affected due to his passing, who talked of how the office was unsurprisingly filled with bright lights and felt more like a The 1975 concert at The O2 than a St. Croix office....

This one's really carrying...it's got a chance...it's off the wall! Addams scores easily from first! Danks jogs into second with a stand-up double! The Tigers have a 3-1 lead in this winner-take-all game! Surely they're heading to their first Finals now!" WBC28 Semifinals Game 3, Yzerberg, Vaugania

A few days ago, one of my colleagues suggested that no one player better embodied the WBC23-28 Tigers than superstar third baseman Alex Cameron. With all due respect to the LBC, which I greatly respect and admire, I contend that this is absolute bullshit. Sure, Alex Cameron had a humble start to his career - but, very much unlike the Tigers, the guy was a superstar by the time he entered the international fray. He was a top prospect in high school, albeit one who took longer to develop than usual. And when the Tigers peaked in WBC28, Alex Cameron was arguably just coming off of the lowest point in his career.

No, this award has to go to Max Danks. Yes, the Derrierton guy thinks Max Danks is some great second baseman - but I can assure you there's no bias at all here. Danks was never tipped to succeed, and he took a long time to get going. But when he did, his scrappiness, his versatility, and his hard work culminated in a surprisingly fruitful career, both for club and country. The star slugger, Cameron, may have gotten the casuals' attention - but true fans appreciated Danks' ability to hit, walk, run, throw, and field, and more importantly, to do all the little things right.

Before I recap his career, I just want to shout out those who were just a hair worse than Danks. Yes, Alex Kirk, James Hao, The Revolving Door Of Infielders From WBC34-38 (Jarred Bergenson-Eckert? Stefan Danilo?), and even Hector Rinaldi were all very solid at the position. But they didn't have the longevity or the sheer will to win that Danks did, and that's what gets them a one-sentence shoutout and Danks an entire article.

Max Danks had his moments in WBC23, 24, and 25, but just like the Tigers (see what I told you!) he just couldn't get over the hump at first. Many criticized manager Thomas Yaft for bringing him on, believing that his scrappy, lunch-pail nature meant that his performances in LBL were his ceiling, and that he would always struggle against higher-ranked opposition. Nevertheless, he still had some flashes, hitting second (before that meant anything) and consistently making excellent plays in the field. With a bat in his hands, he was...fine - a .255 average isn't great, but it certainly wasn't as much of a struggle as fans thought it was.

Where Danks really shone was WBC26, in Cassadaigua, where the Tigers made their first-ever playoffs appearance. After leadoff man Darren Bradley's early struggles, manager Joe McKenzie turned to the second baseman to hit leadoff. Danks' relatively slow speed meant he wasn't an ideal leadoff hitter in the traditional sense, but in the modern sense, well, seven walks in his seven games hitting leadoff speak for themselves, and he did unexpectedly lead the world in triples in the group stage. As a result, the team, fueled by some very strong starts to games (that Danks was instrumental in creating) made the Ro24 - although an injury to Danks, as well as underperformance from the bats, meant their journey would end there.

After a middling WBC27, the onus was on Danks to perform in WBC28, with a number of wunderkind prospects beginning to knock on the door behind him. And deliver, he did. Once again restored to the second spot in the roster, Danks didn't have the quickest of starts, but turned up when it mattered. Clutch hits against Vaugania, Nova Anglicana, and Sangti in the last three rounds were vital to the Tigers' performance, punctuated with a go-ahead hit in game one of the finals and a key insurance run in game three of the semifinals, and Danks retired a member of the first Tigers team to win a championship.

"Who knew a bunch of amateur baseball players could really hold their own against the rest of the field? It is a bit of a remarkable story and one that you would think that the Valanora TImes would normally be all over, yet not seen a sniff of them around the team at all through the first twelve games that they have played. To think that this group of pick up players are really second place in their group with teams that have a history in the competition is completely baffling and a real testament to how versatile a lot of the athletes in the Empire really are. Could you imagine what the team could possibly be doing if they actually were professional players? Though it does definitely look like Sarzonia is on course to start to run away with the group, but the team is truly doing well."

"It is a bit of an extraordinary story, with the VSC being convinced to send a team merely because it was one of those special anniversery editions that seemed to be bringing in a lot of participants that usually do not partake in the event. I imagine we might see something similar when the World Cup of Football hits its century mark, a massive influx on entries for such a historic event, much like is the case now. Yet instead of merely being happy to be part of the festivities, the side has gone out there and actually performed quite well. A bit of timely hitting, though obviously lacking in the power that a lot of other sides might have, and some clutch pitching performances when the games were on the line and the team sits in second and two games above .500. If they contiunue to churn out results like this, well, they might just actually be a contender to make it into the playoffs from this group, though it is a bit early to start such dreams of grandeur, with more than half of the group stage is still left to be played."

"If the team does somehow find a way to advance into the playoffs, it will truly being a testament to how versatile that the Vanorian athlete truly is and could definitely reignite the pitch back in the Empire for the VSC to find the fund to sponsor the Elven Baseball League. With the addition of Sabine and Caddonia into the Empire a few decades ago, there is surely enough interest throughout the entirety of the Empire to actually find an audience and be able to turn profit as well. If the EHL and EBA are able to operate on a profit, then surely the brains at the VSC and the enthusiasts of the sport inside the Empire could find a way to replicate those sort of margins with a potential baseball league as well. While there will never be any real competition for the Premiership in terms of money or eyes on the product both domestically and abroad, there has to be enough of an appetite for the sport among the populace, especially if the story of what the team of amateurs are doing against the rest of the world."

"We shall see, for the time being, I am happy to merely enjoy the ride that this team is giving us. It is probably not going to last, but I dare to dream it might, dare that they could have some sort of storybook ending and facilitate the growth of the sport in the Empire and the EBL being a funded league once more. It is highly unlikely, but stranger dreams and outcomes have come true with the athletes of this empire."

Groundball Day

This time, Travis was prepared for the alarm, and silenced it right as it reached full volume. It was clear that whatever was happening to him and Tori was no strange fluke. After three full days of the exact same day, it was no longer a question if they were in a very weird dream, or something. There was some sort of phenomenon afoot, and they had to figure out how to escape it.

Both Travis and Tori woke up quickly and silently got dressed. They had decided they would go out to the breakfast in the lobby to try and ascertain as many details as possible, perhaps to try and find a pattern. Maybe there was something important they had been missing the previous times.

There would be no such luck, though. Sure, their table still had the weird coffee stain on it, the apples were still gross and grainy, and the young Equestrian native still burned his waffle in the waffle maker.

"You know what always happens in movies?" Travis suddenly asked. "They're having a conversation somewhere, maybe in a restaurant or their living room or something, and something comes on the news. And they ignore it because they're busy going about their day or talking about something else, but the news is talking about something really important, like a major plot point that comes up later. It's cheap exposition, or whatever."

"Are you saying we're in a movie?" Tori replied, a bit confused.

"Not exactly," Travis said, taking a sip of his coffee, "but you have to admit this is weird. Like we said, uh, 'yesterday', it's just like that one movie. And now that I think of it, wasn't there a sci-fi movie with a similar presence? With the one action actor guy? Like the same premise but instead of a guy reliving a day and needing to find true love at the end, it's a guy in the military having to kill all these aliens."

"That sounds vaguely familiar." Tori pondered. "I still don't see what this has to do with us, though. We're not just some people in a story, this is our real lives!"

"Well what we're living through right now is basically a movie plot, right? So maybe we need to think like a movie. Imagine a movie with characters who know they're in a movie, right? They'd be more aware of certain cliches or whatever, and they'd be able to succeed and end the arc faster or more efficiently ... if you get what I'm saying."

Tori started nodding with a small smile, "I'm starting to get your drift. So what, you think we should listen to the TV right now? What channel is it even on?"

"Sports channel." Travis confirmed, looking up at the small hotel TV propped in the corner of the room. "They're just talking about the game tonight."

"That's not very helpful ... we're already going to the game tonight. What else could we possibly do?"

"Beats me. You know what, let's head back up the room. I have a couple ideas."

As the couple put away their trash, they left the lobby to go back up to their room. Unbeknownst to them, the sports channel on the TV was currently featuring a pony talking about the game.

"I'm telling you, the Base Corps simply isn't clutch! A pony team in a pony nation who's already higher ranked and used to the playoffs? There is simply no way the Base Corps can win tonight. It would take a miracle."




"So here's the plan. How's about we just stay awake all night?" Travis proposed, rummaging through his backpack for his wallet.

"Seems easier said than done. Besides, I feel like if it was connected to the day then it would roll over on midnight. But our first couple nights we stayed up well past midnight and didn't notice any changes."

"Okay, so maybe it's not like Cinderella. My only other guess would be the alarm. Maybe it just resets as soon as my alarm is supposed to go off in the morning."

"So you're saying we'd have to stay up for at least 24 hours?" Tori asked, laughing a little. "That's a bit of a tall ask!"

"So what? At least then we'd escape from this purgatory. One long night of some discomfort is totally worth it. Let's just load up on energy drinks or whatever other caffeine stuff we have and get wired all night."

"I'm gonna need more than just a bunch of caffeine to stay awake. Is there anything else we can do?"

"Hmmm ..." Travis wondered, looking around the room. "I don't want to leave this room, it seems like too much of a risk in case something goes wrong. Is there maybe some games we could play?"

"There's not a lot we can do in this room. You didn't bring your little game system, did you?"

Travis groaned and facepalmed. "No! Dammit! Remember, I realized at the airport that I had left it on the coffee table at home?"

"Ah yeah, that's right!" Tori replied, visibly frustrated. "Maybe we could play a game on our phones or something?"

"I guess that'll have to do. For now, let's go to some stores and find some caffeine, then we'll head to the game as usual."

"The game again? I'm starting to get tired of watching the exact same shit. You know I love baseball, but this is a special circumstance."

"I'm feeling the same way, too." Travis responded with a knowing look. "But something in me feels like this game is an important piece to the puzzle, whatever it is. Maybe this time we can roam around instead of sitting in our seats the whole time."

After a moment of consideration, Tori nodded. "Alright, that works for me. Now let's get enough hyper juice to kill a small child!"




Sure enough, the hours had passed. The game went just as it had the last three times. Trav and Tori took laps around the stadium, drank lots of soda, and tried to get their minds off the situation they were in. Everything was going according to plan.

They both had consumed copious amounts of caffeine, being jittery all night and through to the morning. Travis had found a co-op fighting game they could play on his tablet, so they'd been going at it all night and kept their minds occupied.

It was nearly time.

"Oh my God, we're almost there!" Travis said, looking at his watch.

"How close are we?" Tori replied, a little too excitedly.

"We've got a minute to go. I'm not even tired, I think we'll be fine!"

"We're gonna make it then!" she said happily.

"This went way better than expected," Travis said, shifting to sit upright on the edge of the bed.

"Yeah! I can't believe we're about to be free from this ... weird ... curzzzzzzz"

All of a sudden, the two had fallen completely unconscious, without so much as a warning. Like clockwork, Travis's phone began to buzz and chirp as it had for now four days prior.

Ranoria Slips Up - Again - Against the Greater Nordics,
Falls to 8-7, Fourth in Group Halfway Through Group Stage

Leonardo Harrison is an elite player, but the squad only has a couple other players
who can consistently contend on the international stage


Despite an improved roster, the Krauts have struggled in the group stage. Leonardo Harrison's guarantee of a twenty game winning group stage is slipping further away. As a matter of a fact, the Krauts can only drop three more games, in the span of fifteen, if they are to come away with such an impressive mark. Now, while Harrison's comments were more a testament to his confidence in this team than they were his own skill, the latter has certainly been more reliable.

Leonardo Harrison has been playing rather well, with three home runs, running a .323 batting average and having notched nine RBIs. In short: he's more than doing his part for this squad. Also playing well has been Philip Lux, but unfortunately it's ended there.

Paul Verona has been solid, starting and winning five outings, and allowing just two runs overall, but the rest of our pitching has had mixed results at best. The two Banijans have each been the next best thing, going 3-3 between the two of them, but the rest of the group. . .Well, that's where our 0-4 came out of.

But, there's a bright spot in all this. Yes, the team isn't doing as well as we hoped in our wildest dreams, but Harrison's Guarantee was always going to be a longshot. As is, the squad is certainly in a tough position at 8-7 if they're hoping to make the knockout rounds, but they're in better position than they were a year ago at this point, where they were sitting at 7-8. The team would proceed to do just a bit better in the end, finishing with our record now to end at with just as many wins as losses. If we were to follow that trend, do one game better in the second half of the group stage, we could potentially finish at 17-13. If we continue at our current pace, we go 16-14. Unfortunately, neither of those options is likely to get the Krauts into the tournament. The leaders of the group, The Greater Nordics, are on pace to do what Harrison promised: win 20 games, and they are likely out of reach. Tha Great Pond, a squad of ducks whom have done incredibly well this season, are right there with TJUN-ia, and both are on pace to go 18-12. That, at least, is doable.

Technically, Harrison and our beloved Krauts are only a game back behind those two at the moment, and we're on pace to be two games behind. So, all we really have to do? It's a tough ask, but dragging down The Greater Nordics and TJUN-ia every time that we play them. That's the only way we disrupt their pace, that's the only way we can make up ground. So if we're going to pull this off, it's going to take a heroic effort. It's going to take our best pitchers playing at their best, it's going to take everything we can do and more. But fortunately, our Krauts do have an ace in the hole.

Jesse Griffith has been streaky. He's tracking a .199 batting average with a home run and two RBIs. You know what that spells, inconsistency. It isn't that the youngster isn't capable of performing well, he flashed recently against Rwekazaland, where he knocked in both a homer and one of his two RBIs while going 2/3 batting on the day.

However, he's going to have to be better. If he play to his potential, that would give this baseball team one more blue chip player to plan around. However, that's a lot to ask of a fifteen year old kid. We can't expect him to be at his absolute best every game. Instead, we'll just have to hope that he, with his streakiness, peaks at the right time.

beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ... beepbeep ...

The couple suddenly jerked awake, though they felt like they had only been asleep for a microsecond. The alarm was beeping as it always had, but now it seemed like it was mocking them extra hard this time.

"-zze!" Tori finished her sentence from a second ago, then had a shiver go up her whole body. "What the hell?!"

"What just happened?" Travis exclaimed, fumbling around to shut off his phone's ringer.

"I was awake! I was feeling fine!" Tori yelled, "It's like I just fainted for a second then shot back awake!"

"It's like that thing! The uh," Travis struggled for words as he finally got the alarm to shut up, "uh, minisleeps? Microsleeps? Something like that?"

"Whatever it's called, it sucks! I thought for sure we were in the clear ..." Tori whined.

"Hey Tori, it's fine, okay? It did feel a bit too good to be true. But look, we're still here with each other, alright? We'll be fine."

"I guess so ..." she slumped and laid back down on the bed. After a moment of silence, she continued. "I don't even feel all amped up anymore. It's like all that caffeine and garbage we drank is just completely gone."

"I guess we just go completely back to however we were at the start of the day ..." Travis pondered. "I suppose that makes sense, but that's still so strange."

"All of this is strange." Tori huffed, turning over. Travis scooched over in the bed to cuddle next to her. After keeping her body in a tense position, Tori relaxed a little and shuffled closer to her boyfriend.

"So we couldn't cheat the system, or whatever. That's okay. We still have plenty of time to figure all this out. Like, infinite time, I suppose."

"I don't want infinite time. I don't want to be stuck in this stupid hotel room forever, going to the same dumb game forever." Tori pouted. Travis didn't have an immediate response to that, so he just stayed silent and hugged her tighter. They stayed like that in their bed for a few minutes, silent, just feeling close to each other.

"Even with all this happening, I'm glad I still have you." Travis murmured into her ear. "I don't know what I'd do if I had to face this alone."

"God, you're so right." Tori sighed in return. "I'm already going crazy and I even have you to talk to about it." Once again, the room fell silent and they simply held each other close.

"Wait a minute!" Tori exclaimed. Travis jerked a little bit in surprise. Tori bolted upright in bed and turned to him. "So our cycle here is tied to the day, right?"

"I ... guess so? We fell asleep at the exact time my alarm was about to go off."

"So what if," she broke into a mischievous smile, "we weren't on this planet anymore?"

Travis's jaw dropped. "Oh my God, you're right! That might be our ticket out of here ... literally!"

"You got the flex scheduling on our plane tickets, right?"

"Yeah! That way we could leave whenever we wanted, since we're here for the playoffs and those could end at anytime for us. Man, this might be the only time I'm happy to have spent that extra money on tickets."

"Is it too late to reschedule for a flight today? We don't even have to necessarily get home, just through the portal so that we can be on Sonnel. Then we should be on a different time system so our day won't have to reset!"

"I don't think it's too late! I'm gonna see if the morning flight is still available. If we leave right now we might be able to catch it."

"Okay, you get the tickets switched to that flight and I'll start packing our stuff!"

"It's a plan!"




Thankfully for the couple, there were 3 available seats on the morning flight from Canterlot to Stratosphere City in the Isles of Avon. Unfortunately, they were all separated, so they ended up being five rows apart in the coach section. They figured it was worth it, though. A couple of hours of discomfort to get past this infinite unknown? Totally worth it.

Their luck would continue to improve. Once they touched down in the Stratosphere City airport, they found out that there were two seats next to each other on the flight from Avon through the portal into Drawkland. Not that the flight through the portal is very long, but it would be nice to be in each other's company, especially in the boring stretches of taxiing on the runway.

Soon enough, they got on the flight. It lifted off towards the bluish-purplish portal laying low in the sky, which was painted in a beautiful orange and red hue. It was sunset, and by the time they got through customs and baggage claim in Iarokannet Bay, it would be nighttime in Equestria.

It wasn't until they were in Drawkland, out of the airport, sitting on a train heading home, that they finally let themselves relax. There was a visible slump as they both sat back in their seats and leaned against one another.

"I can't believe we made it." Travis murmured, "It's like a midnight ride."

"A weird kind of midnight ride to end in broad daylight!" Tori teased. It was just past noon in Drawkland when they'd come through the other side of the portal. "I wonder what time it is in Canterlot right now."

"Oh right, the game!" Travis said suddenly, pulling his phone out of his pocket. He took it out of airplane mode and started scrolling through to find a live feed of the game. It was the bottom of the ninth.

"Wow, what crazy timing." Tori mused, looking over his shoulder.

"Yeah, it looks like Scootalove City just scored their first run."

"I'm still in shock about how much of a comeback they made in the bottom of the ninth. I mean seriously, five runs with two men on base? Don't get me started on that last play. If the ball was three inches to the right or Serena Hearns a nanosecond late, they're probably scoring a runner or at least loading the bases."

Travis chuckled, "As you said on the first day, don't even make me think about them hitting a walkoff there!"

"Heh, the first day." Tori closed her eyes and leaned on her lover. "I can't wait for all this to just be a bad dream."

"Me too, Tori." Travis smiled. He shifted his arm and suddenly felt the slight weight of the engagement ring box in his inner jacket pocket. His heart sank a little bit. Once again, he'd failed to capitalize on a perfect situation to propose. Sure, the circumstances were a little extreme, but he was really counting on having a romantic moment in Equestria to really seal the deal and give him the courage to finally pop the question. Surely it would be this one that would work, and not the other two situations he'd already tried and failed to really go through with it.

Oh well, now they were back in Drawkland and away from the nightmare scenario they were facing. Now he could try and start back from square one. Maybe they could go visit Elstrund or something. He'd never been before, and Tori had only been once when she was a little kid with her family. A lot of people had proposed somewhere in the valley or on the tree itself, supposedly the incredible view and clarity of nature was really inspiring.

Travis's mind started to wander, and he didn't even notice Tori starting to doze off next to him. His friends and family would keep asking why he wouldn't just propose, and he never really had an answer. It wasn't like cold feet, or doubts about the relationship. He 100% knew that he was going to marry Tori. She was the girl of his dreams, and he was the boy of hers. All their friends called them a "power couple" because of how naturally they fit together. There wasn't even trouble with the potential in-laws. Both their parents were happy and supportive of the relationship and had even grown to befriend each other. It was like every romantic movie cliche you've heard in your life. It was, in short, true love.

But with all this in mind, he still couldn't actually do it. It was like a mental block. He tried to play it off as whatever he could. The timing wasn't right, he didn't have the right words to say. Somebody would come and interrupt at the last second. One time he actually forgot the ring at home, but he knew that even if he hadn't he probably would've choked it anyway.

I should see a shrink or something. Maybe a therapy sesh would be enough to get rid of whatever nerves I have. Geez, I'm tired all of a sudden. Whatever, we're on Sonnel now. Everything is fine. We're fine ...

“Alright Philip, what do we do?” Leo leaned back in his chair on the plane, cap covering his face, “I’m starting to think my proclamation is going to be doomed by our twentieth match.” The star player let out a puff of air through that hat, “Honestly, I figured we’d have at least nine wins by now, within striking distance, right?”

Philip Lux nodded his thanks to the flight attendant as she handed him a drink, “We-” he trailed off, his eyes meeting hers for a second, and then shook his head with a smirk, “Well, yeah, that was a bit of a stretch. Twenty wins? I don’t think we’re there yet in all honesty.” Lux took a sip out of his glass, grimacing a bit at its strength. “I think our best shot is to win a couple playoff games. The regular season, regression towards the mean, ya know?”

Harrison groaned, “That’s not what I wanted to hear, Philly.”

“Yeah, Leo?” He elbowed the other star, “Well that’s why you asked me, so I didn’t tell you what you wanted to hear, right?”

Leo’s hand came up, raising his cap for just a second to give his teammate a glare, “Don’t be a smar-” He stopped when the catcher gave him a look of his own, smirking, “Yeah, whatever.”

“Look Leo, we don’t have the talent to go twenty five and five or whatever. Like I said, if we’re gonna go on a run, our best bet is the postseason. We can have a streak, but we can’t have a thirty game hot streak.”

“You’re right,” Leo sighed, “You’ve been working with Jesse, right?”

Philip nodded, “Yeah, his form is improving. I know it isn’t showing much in the games yet, but I think I can raise his lows and his highs by the postseason. It’s gonna take a few years to get him to be consistently good, though.” Lux raised a finger before adding his second point, “And of course, that’s assuming we make it that far.”

“That kid’s young,” Harrison snorted, “He might soak up this professional stuff like a sponge, you never know.”

“Let’s hope,” Lux pulled out a tablet, pulling up film on Sangti’s pitcher, “Care to break this guy down with me? We can’t afford to lose gimme games like this next one.”

Harrison tilted his head, allowing his hat to fall off, and Lux chuckled, setting the tablet up on the tray table in front of the empty seat between the two of them. “Yeah, let’s do it.”

Batter Up!: Short Summaries (Games 13-15)

Game 13 - TJUN-ia (33) 6-4 Ranoria (31) (Cardinal Auditorium, Nashville)
Gene Almac would start TJUN-ia's 2nd trip to Tennessee to take on Ranoria in what would become a very entertaining game in the Cardinal Auditorium. Both teams scored 1 run in the first inning before the Krauts took over with 3 runs in the next 3 innings, including a 2-run bomb by John Stallone, that called Almac off the mound in place of F.G. Greenwood. Greenwood would shut out the Krauts for the rest of the game while the batting tried to mount a comeback. One run in the 5th made it 4-2 Krauts before 2-run homers in back-to-back innings (via Bryce Calhoun and Greenwood himself) propelled the Battin' Jags to a lead they wouldn't lose for the rest of the game. It was tough, but the Jaguars avoided the Nashville Blues once again.

Game 14 - The Greater Nordics (14) 8-5 TJUN-ia (22) (The Diamond in The Gardens, New Washington)
Then the pain arrived. Jose Almas was the starter in New Washington, a place that has seen little baseball joy thus far in WBC50, as the Jags hosted The Greater Nordics. He would last only 2 innings as the Nordics stormed out to a 7-1 lead with both consistent and smart play that made even the friendly crowds at The Diamond seeth with rage. Thus Almas was gone for the first time with Kim Tsu-Ka taking his place, and he would concede only 1 run for the rest of the game. TJUN-ia tried to recover with 2 runs in the 3rd and a few more here and there, but even a team known for staging comebacks couldn't overturn this deficit. The Nordics took both the game and the group lead after that performance, but the worst was yet to come...

Game 15 - TJUN-ia (22) 1-10 Sangti (UR) (Kabunuklan Sports Complex, San Rafael)
This would not be Kyle McNash's night at all in Kabunuklan. Sangti had won only 2 games heading into this fixture and things started well...for the first 2 innings. Then the Indios took over, taking a run in the 3rd, a 3-run bomb by Marietta Joy Bascos in the 4th and a loaded bases situation that, after Hani Mikail Roquim was walked, led to an Emil Justin Ducut Grand Slam. The Indios were 9-0 up in a flash and McNash was gone for LCL. Liam Christoper-Lee would try his best to help his team, conceding only 1 run for the rest of the game, but even he couldn't help TJUN-ia's batting in San Rafael. No one could do anything against Joenard Karlos Abao, to the dismay of both Phillip Hellas-Verona and Enrique Lopez, and even though a Pedro Moires solo homer avoided talk of a shutout, this would not be a good night for the Battin' Jags. They were dominated 10-1 by a team who had only won 2 games before this one. It was an utter embarrassment to all and PH-V refused to speak to the media afterwards. No one was willing to except Assistant Manager Pedro Volcoron, who put it bluntly: "That wasn't TJUN-ian baseball. That was an embarrassment. This will never happen again." Let's hope so...

I admit some of the things I thought were clever and witty fourteen years ago don't always hold up, and I was probably never a strong enough chess player to be an IC powerhouse, but based on the leitmotifs back in the day there should ICly be at least some characters who would try this and not be embarrassed by it.

Strong starting pitching leads red-hot Banija to the halfway point of the WBC 50 group stages

ISTRIA, MORAVICA- The Banijans did not get off to the best start during the World Baseball Classic. Of course, there's no better time-honored tradition in sports than extrapolating way too much from way too small of a sample size, and that certainly happened with the early panic bells around this team. They dropped their opening two games of this tournament, and everybody around them was worried. But they simply put their heads down, blocked out the outside noise, and made everybody forget about that. They've now won 12 of their last 13 games, and playing at as high of a level as we've seen them play.

And that leads us to this team's greatest strength- starting pitching. Ousman Kakay has always built his team around big, hard throwing starters, who can go deep into a game and go straight to the backend of the bullpen. And the last few games especially, Banija's starting pitchers have absolutely answered the call that Ousman Kakay has given them. Let's go back through each of the last 5 games that we have won to illustrate that point. First, Matchday 11. Banija, at home, against Karditan. A backend rotation starter, Faraba Conateh, on the mound. Got plenty of run support- we had chased their starter in the third inning, after going up 6-0 on them.

Conateh went 5 and 2/3s, with 2 earned runs. A strong start from a backend rotation starter, with enough of a cushion and gap for the middle of the bullpen to get this game across the finish line. Then, of course, with the rotation being scrambled, it would be Ensa Suso on the mound to face off against the United Pink States. A trap game of sorts, away from home. But Ensa Suso, also with plenty of run support, pitched confidently. With his team up 4-0 after four innings, and 6-0 after six, this was never going to be all that close of a matchup. He only allowed a run in the 7th inning, and with his team having such a huge lead, Ousman Kakay was content to let Suso pitch. Suso threw a complete game, scattering six hits and allowing just the lone earned run.

But it wouldn't just be success against the group's unranked squads. Suntukung Kandeh was asked to take his first crack at Super Llamaland. The four-time champions whom Banija had beaten in the WBC 49 Round of 16, Banija's #2 starter stepped up and pitched like an absolute ace. Another win where everything seemed to click- the offense scoring early and often, while the starter keeping the opposing team on their toes. He threw 7.2 shutout innings, while Bouba Kujabi, the nominal setup man, got the final four outs for this squad. The very next day, the staff ace, Duta Condé, matched his effort by throwing 8 shutout innings. The closer, Sama Kinte, got the final three outs in that one.

And while Ramata Kabba had a no decision after throwing 6.1 innings and allowing 2 earned runs, it was a Banijan comeback, with 2 runs in the 8th and another two in the 9th, that won it against Anthor on Matchday 15. Ousman Kakay commented on the run by his starters. "Look, this team's foundation is strong starting pitching. Philosophically, we don't do openers. There's no bigger advantage in this sport than having a bunch of guys that can go 6-7 innings. If you can do that, then you can make exremely judicious use of your bullpen- platooning pitchers, stuff like that. Especially in the group stages, where you don't want to wear the pen down. If we can continue this run, then we should be able to win this group easily and get ourselves a great seed for the knockout stages."

Presently, Banija finds themselves at 12-3. It puts them on a strong pace for the knockout stages. It puts them on a pace for a national group stage record. And, of course, it puts them just 3 wins away from 250 all-time wins for the national baseball team. A strong tournament so far- can they keep this pace throughout the group stages?

For those just tuning in, we are witnessing something special today; South Newlandian center Fielder Shawn Zimmerman and Todd Forneris, one of the relievers from Zwangzug, are meeting today not in a baseball park, but on the chess board. Yes, on a literal chess board!
Kilian Mettal: We have already seen the first game, and now they are turning the board; and Zimmerman will have the white pieces for the second game. Of course, they aren’t just playing for no reason, this is a charity event, supporting… what was it again?
RS: Actually, that’s an excellent question. I think it was something with chess and baseball being promoted at the same time and collecting money to offer free training to poor children? Something like that, I think.
KM: Honestly, I am surprised something like that hasn’t been done sooner. I mean, if you think about chess nations, you are probably thinking about Zwangzug and South Newlandia, in that order. Chess will likely never be as important for the history and culture of a nation as it is for Zwangzug.
RS: That’s true. Few other nations have a chess pun as their name. Anyways, they are going to start now!

KM: Zimmerman opts for the fairly slow and conservative d3, instead of going for d4. Just like when he’s hitting, he doesn’t like being too aggressive.

KM: Oh, that’s a beautiful checkmate! Look at everything working together to deliver the final blow to the black king! A perfect metaphor for both baseball and life, and we see the two players shaking hands now. Huge kudos to Forneris and Zimmerman for playing these games here, and congrats to Zimmerman. Of course, Forneris played two very solid games as well, and he would’ve probably won the second one if it weren’t for that blunder. On top of that, it was Forneris winning the battle on the baseball field so far, along with his team, as South Newlandia has caught just a 9-6 start compared to Zwangzug’s 11-4 record. That is the worst start in the short South Newlandian baseball history, following a 10-5 record in 48 and a 11-4 record in 49. Alas, we will hope that the team can turn things around, and qualify for the playoffs regardless! That’s it for today, thanks for watching!

The player of the series was 1B Hammond Garrou, who had four home runs and fifteen runs batted in. Also of note was the fact that they won the last two games by a single run as Rachel Knox was instrumental in holding the Comets' attack. Laure Valle had three home runs and twelve RBIs in the defeat.

In the first game, Shantarr really got to the Fire's Miles Savey, chasing him out after five innings. After that, though, Alisen Moyamoto really took over things with four home runs and thirteen RBIS, along with a few neat double plays in the middle of the series.

This was by far the series of the Quarterfinals. The Vipers had the run of things early, with a six-run eighth inning in the first game and a masterful pitching performance in Game 4. However, after getting ahead 3-1, they couldn't get any further. Hine Salle got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth in Game Five by only conceding a sacrifice fly, Mattieu Gammond scored two home runs to lead the way in Game 6, and in Game 7, a two-run homer by Polly Potts proved to be the difference at the top of the ninth.

Halfway through the group stage of the Golden edition of the World Baseball Classic, the Sarzonian national baseball team are in an enviable position in Group 2.

The Stars currently sit with a record of 12-3, five games clear of three teams with 7-8 records. One of the teams is Northwest Kalactin, the highest ranked team of Sarzonia's group mates at No. 18. The other two are unranked Sevendia and Valanora. Megistos, the other ranked team at No. 38 are deadlocked with unranked Darmen at 6-9.

In this unique World Baseball Classic, the halfway point gives Sarzonian supporters a strong opportunity to look around at the other teams to get an idea of where the Stars stand. The clear strength of the Sarzonian ball club is pitching and defence, as only Newmanistan have conceded as few runs as Sarzonia's 35. The Rockets have plated 89 runs, ranking them second in the World Baseball Classic in runs scored behind Quintessence of Dust's 91 runs.

Meanwhile, Sarzonia have only scored 69 runs, which lead Group 2, but are well below the runscoring prowess of most of the other group leaders. Twenty teams overall have scored more than the Stars, whereas only Group 7 leaders The Greater Nordics have scored as few runs.

The Greater Nordics have both a smaller run differential of plus-14 to Sarzonia's plus-34 and a much tighter race with one-game leads over TJUN-ia and The Great Pond.

"We're playing well right now, but the objective isn't to play well right now," manager Geoff Yancey said. "The objective is to win another World Baseball Classic." Toward that end, the Stars have gotten outstanding performances from every spot in the starting rotation, and Yancey said he is pleased to see his starters pitching deep into games.

"It greatly reduces the strain on our bullpen," he said. "We're going to need them to be ready should we make it to the knockout rounds." Yancey said he wanted the team to avoid taking anything for granted, even after the second three-match sweep of the competition. The top two teams from each group automatically qualify for the Round of 32, and the six best third placed sides join them. Most prognosticators project that only an epic collapse would keep the Stars from qualifying, but ace starter Jeff Parrish said the team would not rest on its laurels.

"We haven't accomplished anything yet," he said. "We've got a long way to go."

Gō walked to the plate, taking a wider stance and centering his line of sight. His last at-bat was a line of fouls, just to end in a damned flyball to the right field. He was ready to avenge.

What happened next was not expected by the batter, who swung the bat right into the flamethrower of a pitch just right. The ball flew deep into the field, and he ran, and ran, and ran. Inuzuka was screaming to him like a madman. Run, you freaking idiot, run faster!. The ball was going into the stands. just a couple of seconds and...

"It goes and goes and goes and oh my, the ball hit the wall! Tori Fullerton takes it and delivers like a cannon. Nagamine's screaming now... Shinji finally stopped safe in the third base. What a downer! Gō almost had it! Almost had a homerun to open the count in this difficult game 13. After an eternity of fouls and a nasty strikeout, Shinji finally made it to the base. Still painful. The homerun, just dissolved into the damned railing!"

"Juzou, you better let me come back!!!"

Everyone in the dugout let out a laugh. To watch Gō mad was always fun. Cho just signaled him and went to the battlefield, preparing to give a battle. Eventually, the batter hit hard to the right field, and even when he was out, it gave Shinji the time to return and score the so awaited run.

"Cho just sacfly-ed and our fouth batter is coming back to town! Team Daskel finally managed to score a run against the top one of the WBC rankings.

The inning died there with the next two batters, but everyone was energized. At last, a run on the freaking scoreboard.

What happened next was the awakening of the daskelian monster beneath the team. With just two runs behind, Sakamoto started to strategize instead of An, leading to an almost suicidal scenario that, somehow, worked. Put a man on first, then a sacrifice bunt. Shibaike did his part, reaching safely to first, and then impulsed to second by Watanabe's bunt. Sakamoto was bold in his commanding, and despite An having a heart attack, he signaled the DH to steal the base.

"Are you a madman?! We'll lose this opportunity!"
"Takashi... please, I know what I'm doing"
"This team is not your U18 team, Hiroshi"
"But they can! They fucking can and you'll see it. If I lose here, fine, replace me if you want, but let me"

An finally dropped the fight, allowing the young coach to call the crucial play. Thankfully for him, the play was close, but Shibaike reached the third just a couple of milliseconds before the swift throw from Thompson. Then, Kishimoto sacrificed himself once again in a bunt.

"Kishimoto waits and... SQUEEZE FROM KISHIMOTO. PERFECT DELIVERY AND SHIBAIKE BOY IS BACK! The dugout's going crazy down there, as Kishimoto comes back from the suicidal play. Tell me, Mr Tanaka, was this the work Sakamoto kantoku?"
"It seems so. Sakamoto did a similar successful play in the IBS, but this was way more dangerous for him to signal, as the team did not practice the play that much under An before. It seems like the U18's magic is coming to the adult team in form of Sakamoto Hiroshi. Absolute madman"


The TV was showing both coachs, An telling something to the other in dramatic fashion
"One day all of this will backfire, just remember it!"

Well, it was quite... anticlimatic, to say at least.

After tying vs Cassadaigua, the team impulsed four runs in two innings, where Go finally could pull the so evasive homerun. Izo was brought on the eighth, one before the usual, and the pitcher had two excellent innings, securing a victory that, seriously, only a madman could predict in their betting circles. After that game, and now in a more realistic betting scenario, Kanao and team Daskel won vs Carung, an overwhelming 8-2 that Daskel fans celebrated in the Daito Kyūjō at the sound of the trumpets, tubas and bass drums.

Back in the road, Team Daskel somehow lost their gas in the batting department once more, losing runless against The Saints of Oscioru. The 4-0 in the Saint Gregory Chrysostom Center hurt like hell.

"Team, we have the list for the next three games. Shibaike, Eidome will be back, but please, be ready for any reason, understood?"
"Yes sir"
"Nice. Now, Oshimura will be back. Fuji will keep playing as our center. Ben will be replaced for Sakama, but will be able to play for the next rotation. That's all. Please, be ready for our next short practice. We need to talk about that terrible batting from last game"
