The Lacrosse Lamentations
with Aisling Keane

And thus it starts. The true test of our mettle. This is the start of the time where we prove if we are actually as good as this Casaran group stage has made us appear to be or if we're still bottlers of the highest calibre.

This has been a strange World Lacrosse Championships from the start. First of all, the new "Casaran" format. I'm pretty sure I already tried to explain this whole thing as best as I can in a previous post, but just ICYMI, the Casaran format is where you pit all the teams against other teams that are of similar strength to them according to ranks or statistics or whatever, meaning that great teams face off against other great teams and poor teams face off with other poor teams. The more you win, the more chances you'll face other teams on great streaks of their own, and vice versa. And if you continue beating all those other great teams then you become the top dog, as shown by our own Amazons in Northwest Kalactin. In the group stage, that is. The playoffs are an entirely different matter altogether, but we'll get back to that later.

Delaclava, Lovisa, Sarzonia, Banija, Baker Park. Those were the five teams we faced in the Casaran stage, and those were also the five teams that we beat to secure the top seed for the playoffs. As a list, it starts off meh before rapidly going to the top come the middle item. I wouldn't say that Delaclava and Lovisa were pushovers, but our Amazons certainly made them look that way when we played them. Sarzonia was the first team we faced in this tournament that looked like they could take a result away from us, and they did manage to keep it close, but eventually we managed to walk away with the big W in the fourth quarter. Then we were all hyped up for Abanhfleft vs. Banija, thinking it was gonna be a titanic clash for the ages. And then it turned into an outright arse-whooping. Only Baker Park came close, and even then only because we had already done the damage in the first half and were resting players in anticipation for the playoffs. But if we're being really honest though, it was more like Jenelle Eure made everyone look like pushovers. I mean, Christ above, I literally can't remember the last time any player had ever dominated entire teams on her own.

This isn't my thing really, but let's try to break down Jenelle's stats, like the pundits do. 49 goals in five games, just under ten goals per game. She's also good for a few assists here and there, but her true power really lies in her goalscoring. I have never seen someone who looks at the net and goes "Yep, I'm gonna score ten goals today just because." That is the mindset of someone who knows what they're doing, knows that they're doing well, and doesn't give a rat's arse about anything else. Some might call her a ball hog (and some already have) but when she's banging them in from all angles like Jenelle Eure does, it kind of gives her the right to be a ball hog. Not saying that she should be a ball hog; God knows that if the opposition shuts her down we're as good as dead if she does become like that. And even though she's been the focus of the team this whole game, the New Fearsome Threesome is still a thing. Pearline Cordes and Tomiko Legaspi are still there, doing their thing even after they've been overshadowed by their new teammate. They might be getting a little bit old but they're still able to do their jobs as attackers. They sure did come in handy in the game against Baker Park after all.

Well, here comes the true test. Abanhfleft versus Natanians and Nosts. I feel like we've faced them a fair few times before, but it just doesn't feel like some kind of grudge match it would have probably been if it was against, say Vangaziland or Wrexwic. I just hope it doesn't end up being to our disadvantage because the lasses might check out mentally and say "Oh, it's just Natanians and Nosts." It's still a playoff game, ladies (and gents). We only get one chance to win this. One mistake could very well be the thing that sends us packing despite being the top seed. There is simply no room for both overconfidence and overthinking this.

Unlike the final match of the Casaran System portion of the World Lacrosse Championships, the match between the Sarzonian national lacrosse team and Cassadaigua was very much in doubt well into the fourth quarter.

The Stars and the Fillies entered the final five minutes of the frame deadlocked at nine goals apiece. Close defender Xander Beauchamp was in the dressing room being treated for dehydration after trying to keep up with attack Jessica Crockett for the first 50 minutes of the match. He'd managed to hold Crockett to one goal and one assist until he cramped up. She then scored two quick goals to draw the score level.

Stars manager Jordan Helms decided to send out Ian Taylor to sub for Joanne Bryant after she allowed Crockett's two fourth quarter goals. It would be Taylor's first significant action of the tournament, with Helms saying that Taylor had the best combination of agility and physicality to match up with Crockett.

Taylor quickly pounced on the loose ball after he'd knocked down a pass intended for Crockett and fired a long outlet to Stars attack Martin Page. He drew two defenders to him, then slotted a pass to fellow attack Colin Grassley, who buried the shot past Cassadagan goaltender Allison Kinzet with 3:46 remaining.

Faceoff specialist Jeremy Harper then jogged onto the pitch an even .500 in draws despite the protest of starting FOGO Noah Ryanson, who had hoped to do a Willis Reed-type move. Harper won the draw and passed to Gio Guardio, who quickly surveyed the pitch and faked a pass to Grassley, drawing the attention of his mark and slowing another defender just enough to fire a shot that rocketed past the crosse of Kinzet with 2:31 remaining.

That left matters up to the Stars defence and young goalie Matt Henning. He made three of his seven saves on the match in the frantic final minute after the Fillies forced a shot clock violation on the Stars. Fortunately for the Stars, Henning and the defence were up to the task. As the final whistle sounded, Stars escaped with an 11-9 victory over the Dagans, but their excitement would soon turn to grim determination when they learned their next opponent.

Abanhfleft. That's right: The only team that blitzed through the five-match "group stage" of the Casaran format without a loss. The only team to inflict defeat on the Stars. The team Sarzonia wanted to play in the more conventionally formatted World Lacrosse Championships prior to this one, but neither team were able to make it to the promised land.

Now, the two teams were playing each other again with much more on the line. Sure, the Stars could point to revenge as motivation, but legacy would be the far greater aim. A victory would give Sarzonia a chance to play for a sixth title and further cement its position as the greatest lacrosse country ever. A Fleftics win would give them a chance to hold the championship trophy aloft for the fifth time.

Two countries. Nine titles between them. It was a shame that this battle wasn't a title match in the eyes of some Sarzonians, but Helms said he was focused squarely on Abanhfleft.

"That team is easily the best team we've played during this cycle," he said. "This match is too important for us to be distracted by when we're playing it."

Helms said Ryanson might be available to take a few faceoffs if he doesn't suffer any setbacks. Harper is still expected to start at the X.

And then there were four. Abanhfleft, Sarzonia, Vangaziland, and Terre Septentrionale. I could say something along the lines of "There is one impostor among us," but that would be a bit tacky now, don't you think? In any case, everyone can only beat the teams in front of them on their way to the World Lacrosse Championship, and now all four of us have to beat the other team if we all still want to hold on to that dream of winning that title.

Jenelle Eure seems to be slowing down. Not sure if that's because of the opposition's game plan or her efforts in the group stage finally catching up to her, but she's definitely not banging in goals in the double digits anymore. Still, six goals is nothing to scoff at, and she's put up four assists as well, so maybe this is another adjustment to a return to an actual team-based style of play. And out of the four quarterfinals matches we've had, ours is the only one that came closest to having a double-digit margin of victory. Like, literally. I'd say that nine is the closest digit you can get before getting double, yeah?

Anyway, what the fuck am I even saying? Things are beyond heated now. This is the crunchiest of crunch times. We are one game away from potentially going back to the WLC final, but before we can even begin thinking about the title, we have to deal with Sarzonia first. They're not going to make it any easy for us. They're not going to back off. They want the title as well. They're after Title Number Six, but they haven't been in the final of the WLC since the last time they won the championship, which was way before when Abanhfleft wasn't even a thing in international sports. As for us, we're after Title Number Five, the proof that we're now a real lacrosse superpower, that our earlier period of dominance wasn't just a one-off thing. Glory and honour are on the line here. Sarzonia want to increase their record haul of trophies; Abanhfleft want to match them in that regard. One game, one goal: winner goes on, loser goes home.

This is it, lads and lasses. The big one. The one match where it truly matters. The championship game. Winner truly takes all this time around. No second chances. Just one shot at glory. And how fitting it is that we're up against Vangaziland. I can already smell the revenge angles being played up for all they're worth. Not that there's much to played up for, to be honest. Abanhfleft and Vangaziland isn't really much of a rivalry now, is it? Not when you compare it to say, Sarzonia or Banija or even Terre Septentrionale. I mean, those Northerners just love to come out and play when we're their opponents.

But I digress. This has been the closest game of lacrosse we've ever played in this whole tournament. First of all, it's the first time that a team managed to keep us on level pegging for the whole of regulation, and it's also the closest result we've ever had. I told you Sarzonia weren't going to give up that sixth title that easy. Not when they have a chance as good as this possibly is. I mean, how do they know if they're going to get this far in the next edition of this tournament? Hell, how do we know if we're gonna get this far next time around as well? This might be our last chance of ever winning a World Lacrosse Championship ever again, so it would be downright foolish not to take said chance. Both teams gave their all on that field today, and it showed. Nobody was taking anything for granted out there. Everyone gave just as much as they got. We tried so hard to pull away like we always did, but Sarzonia knew what was happening and kept themselves close to the end. It took us overtime to separate ourselves from Sarzonia, and even then it was just by one single point.

For once, Jenelle Eure actually looked anonymous out there, much like any other player. She still chipped in three goals, so she's not a total waste of space on the pitch, but I think this is the first time a team has actually managed to successfully silence her. Well, not really silence, but stifle to the point that she didn't end up being the pivotal point of our entire team. Whether this is a good thing or a bad one is entirely up to interpretation. She did rack up five assists though, three of them in the overtime period that proved crucial to us eventually overcoming the Stars.

So Sarzonia has been defeated, again. Now we've got one final opponent to face before we can even begin thinking about the trophy. Vangaziland are no slouches either. They will want to add a second title under their belt after coming so close a fair few times. We've had more success in lacrosse compared to Vangaziland, at least when comparing titles, but more titles never harmed anyone, did it? One more game to play, one more game to win. This time, winner truly takes all. Number Five is on the line for Abanhfleft while Vangaziland is gunning for Number Two. No, not that number two. Get your minds out the gutter. Christ above. You know what I mean when I said that. But there can be only one. Who it is, I don't know. I hope it's us, but it would be a completely Fleftic thing if after going undefeated for the entirety of the tourney, the final is where we fall flat on our faces and record our first and only L of the campaign.
