-- Pentti Karkkanen reporting from Charlottesville --

The Warrior Owlets' foray into international hockey has met a first roadblock when they lost their first game of the World Junior Hockey Championship against Terre Septentrionale.

The young Tikariot team started with a surprise win against Savojarna, 3-1, which took everybody by surprise, even the players themselves. The second game against Kohnhead then saw an equally surprising continuation, ending in a 3-2 win, which then hit a speedbump when Terre Septentrionale beat them 4-2. However this has not put any detectable dent into the team's spirit.

"It is an amazing experience for the players to play this tournament and is a tremendous opportunity to learn both the pressure of playing in a competitive environment like this and also measure their own talents against some of the best their age group has to offer," says coach Andreas Samuelsson.

We caught up with some of the players after the game.

"It is fantastic here, to be able to play against these great nations. And I must say that Fluvannia is great, too, they know their hockey and what teams need in a tournament like this," gushes first line center Sebastian Svedberg. His linemate Anders Strandberg adds: "Totally. We came here not knowing where we stand and we were prepared for the worst, but this has been a crazy experience so far, winning against Savojarna of all teams, and Kohnhead! I can't wait for the next few games!"

This year's edition of the Junior Hockey World Championships here in Fluvannia is the 15th edition and with 32 teams competing Tikariot is among the minnows of the sport yet Tikariotians are beginning starting to take notice of the youngsters.

"I had no idea that Tikariot actually had a hockey team, let alone a junior team!" says Ian Staunton, owner of a sports bar in Tovaca.

And this is a common theme across the nation. Going from complete obscurity to bars and restaurants advertising televised games of the Warrior Owlets and making front page news in newspapers all over Tikariot.

"I believe that this could be the beginning of something beautiful," says the president of the Tikariot Hockey Federation, Mikael Blomqvist. "This reminds me a bit of when our baseball team adopted the name of Devil's Rejects and went on a marvelous run through the International Baseball Slam and the World Baseball Classic. The Warrior Owlets might not be able to replicate the same level of success, but if anything they are raising awareness for Tikariot Hockey and that is a great thing!"

Looking at the group Tikariot was drawn into, after Savojarna, Kohnhead and Terre Septentrionale, the next few opponents will be Elejamie, Sarzonia, Susuvi and finally Græntfjall‌. Within the group some experts see Terre Septentrionale as a dark horse to win the competition, so a loss against them definitely is not a stain on Tikariot's previously untarnished record, as small as it was.

Some say that group A is a literal group of death with nations such as Siovanija & Teusland, Banija, Cassadaigua and Kelssek having been drawn together, all of which enjoy great success with their senior teams, which automatically makes them favourites on the junior level as well.

The Tikariot Sports Gazette will continue its coverage of the World Junior Hockey Championship and will be back with our report from game 4 against Elejamie.

HIBERNATION'S OVER

APPLETON, Du. Winnebago -- In our previous coverage of the Fluvannia junior hockey team, we noted that they have a tendency to be slow starters, and that if they were to have any hope of advancing in front of their home fans, they would need to find that next gear, and quickly. The heavy hitters of their schedule are clustered in games four through six of seven, so they were squandering their chances for points easier to be had.

We don't know if the team reads this paper -- it's a little stuffy as papers go, lots of financial and political news. Probably also a good idea to nix media from the team's view for the duration of the tournament anyway. That said, it wouldn't be surprising to us if it turned out that our message had reached the team, because last night in Appleton the Cubs came out firing on all cylinders, and just in time. Cassadaigua was the opponent of the evening, and as the reigning bronze medalists at the WJHC they were not to be underestimated by any means. Fortunately, the Cubs were able to rise to the occasion with a resounding 5-2 victory, sufficient to catapult them from last to fourth in time for the halfway break. From the minute the teams hit the ice for warmups, the arena was buzzing. A capacity crown of 17,900, eager to see their Cubs win, waved banners and flags; at least one rendition of the "I Believe" chant popular at college games came up early. O Triune Realm sung by the entire arena during the pre-game anthems; it was a rousing and inspiring thing to hear that many people in unison.

With the mood in the arena set before the puck had even dropped, all the Cubs really needed to do was follow suit and play with energy. And that they did. All it took was a minute and twenty-six seconds to get on the board. Preston Sihvola and Dennis Martau were able to strip one of the Cassadaiguan players of the puck, and a two-on-one saw Sihvola give-and-go with Martau before putting the puck in the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead. The Cassadaiguan players must have been a little frustrated, because they let the chippy stuff start early. Three penalties in the first period, all of them easily avoidable. A high-stick, a boarding (on which, thankfully, Duane Osborne was ultimately uninjured), and a slash all saw Cassadaiguan players in the box, though not more than one at a time. The last one actually provided a bit of momentum for them; the Cubs gave up a rare shorthanded goal, and the score was tied at 1 going into the first intermission.

The second was all about the Cubs. Four goals -- including two from Sihvola for the second hat trick in program history -- busted the game wide open. First was Reiji Narusomo, cleaning up a rebound from a Johannes Rojola shot in front of the crease at 3:42. Then came Sihvola's second of the evening at 6:26, a sizzling one-timer off a feed from the opposite point by Caleb Gill; this one would stand as the game-winner. Bernard Cook got on the board with a wraparound at 14:44, and Sihvola again found the twine at 18:21, completing the trifecta with a goal from a net-mouth scramble.

Blue-clad fans the arena over, already boisterous before the game, may have gotten a little over-eager with their team up 5-1. A few fans behind the one net celebrated a bit too hard as the siren sounded for the second intermission, and dislodged a pane of glass; the intermission, instead of the standard 15 minutes, was closer to 35 as a result, after the arena crew had to replace the pane and clean up the remains of its predecessor in order for the ice resurfacer to come out. Our props to them for getting this done in a most timely manner.

If we have one criticism of the Cubs from this game, it is that they clearly came out for the third prepared to rest on their laurels. While it is understandable that the game was pretty much in their grasp already, they got a reminder of the dangers of letting off the gas at 8:26 when Cassadaigua managed to notch a second goal. Luckily the quality and pace of the Fluvannian play picked up after that, and the 5-2 score held until the final siren.

Going into the rest day, the Cubs' back-to-back victories have propelled them from last place to fourth in their group of eight. Still remaining are games against Siovanija and Teusland, Banija, and the United Osean States, in that order. S&T is widely regarded as one of the best -- if not the best -- teams in the world; as the reigning champion of this event and the reigning champion at the senior level, it is apparent that they know their stuff, and will likely prove the toughest challenge of this group. Banija are no slouches either, usually held among the upper class of international hockey at both the senior and junior level. United Osean States is making their international debut, but they're also in second in the group standings, so should not be taken lightly by any means.

Fluvannia's schedule for group play is as follows:

Mon, Oct 12: vs. Kelssek L 0 - 1
Tue, Oct 13: @ Lorenthia L 2 - 4
Wed, Oct 14: vs. Sylestone W 2 - 1
Thu, Oct 15: @ Cassadaigua W 5 - 2
Sat, Oct 17: vs. Siovanija & Teusland
Sun, Oct 18: @ Banija
Mon, Oct 19: vs. United Osean States

Juan Swayne, minister of foreign affairs after Juan Swayne, was excited. This was the second game Npc west Florida won, and the Championship wasn’t over yet. However he felt a little nervous about the next few games, but that could have been the wine he drank at the celebration with the team. Sitting down in a chair in front of the tv and started to think about the Olympics a few months prior, he shook his head and thought “That was the biggest disgrace we have ever received on the international scale, but I think this will make up for it.” Turning on the tv, he turned it to a news channel hoping to get a Fluvannians opinion on the game, sadly he missed it and all that was on was the creeps from Extreme Extraterrestrials. Quickly turning off the tv so they won’t brainwash him with there lies about the president being born on the planet Vulcan, and that other leaders were also from Vulcan. Then moving over to the bed he thought “This time, NPC west Florida will win something.”
Welcome to West Florida! Read This guide for Its General information and This one for my military information. If you are interested in more information, please wait while it is passing the security clearance

Terre Septentrionale stuns Sarzonia

Harrisonburg, Fluvannia - Following a 4-2 win against Tikariot, Terre Septentrionale played against their rivals, Sarzonia, in Harrisonburg and beat them 7-3. Yes, 7-3! I've heard that, before the game, coach Françoise Laframboise made a long speech in the locker room and then Nordiques players were fired up when they jumped on the ice. The first player to score a goal was Laframboise's son, Pier-Olivier Laframboise. Sarah-Lou Têtu recovered a loose puck in the right corner of the ice and passed it to Labramboise who shoots and he scores. 1-0. With 14 minutes remaining in the period, Yves St. Louis was penalised for hooking and Terre Septentrionale is on the power play. 30 seconds later, Alex-Olivier Châteauneuf deflects Carl-Olivier Groleau-Pinard's shot into the net and the score was 2-0. The Nordiques added another goal with 8 minutes remaining when Świętosław Pomerleau-Kozikowski and Marie-Sarah Laplante-Deschamps were on a two on one, Pomerleau-Kozikowski passed the puck to Laplante-Deschamps who passed it back to Świętosław Pomerleau-Kozikowski who put the puck behind Owen Franks. 3-0 Terre Septentrionale. 3 minutes before the end of the period, Radoslaw Wielkiewicz was penalised for tripping and Sarzonia is on the power play. A minute later, Mike Stevens gets the puck from George Anderson and shoots. Nikola Sakic makes the save but doesn't control the rebound, Josh Evans takes the puck and shoots it in an almost empty net. The score is 3-1 and this is the end of the first period.

Terre Septentrionale scored early in the 2nd period when Žiga Kovačevič recieved the puck from Karolanne Laverdière-Deslongchamps and shot it ino the net. Sarzonia answered back 5 minutes later when George Anderson, Josh Evans and Brett Tanguay Jr. were on a 3 on 1. Anderson carried the puck and passed to Evans who passed to Tanguay Jr. Tanguay Jr shoots and it's a goal. Terre Septentrionale's lead is reduced to 4-2. With 6 minutes remaining in the period, Terre Septentrionale was once again on the power play. Carl-Olivier Groleau-Pinard receives the puck from Julie-Anne Labelle-Binette and shoots. He scores and it's now 5-2. This is the score at the end of the period.

For the 3rd period, Martin Pelleur decided to replace Owen Franks with Carter Liut to give him more experience. Agnieszka Straszyńska-Kowalik scored early in the 3rd period to put the score at 6-2. As the game goes, Sarzonian players were getting frustrated, their checks were more brutal and they were chirping after the whistle. With 13 minutes remainign in the period, Christian Channing smashed Alex-Olivier Châteauneuf into the boards and he was down on the ice. Châteauneuf is arguably Terre Septentrionale's best player. Carl-Olivier Groleau-Pinard dropped the gloves against Channing to defend his teammate. Other players on the ice were holding each other. Marie-Sarah Laplante-Deschamps and Ashleigh Whitfield were pushing each other and they almost got into a fight. It was ugly, I don't like seeing this. Christian Channing was penalised 5 minutes for boarding, 5 minutes for fighting and a game misconduct. Carl-Olivier Groleau-Pinard got 2 minutes for instigating, 5 minutes for fighting and also a game misconduct. Marie-Sarah Laplante-Deschamps and Ashleigh Whitfield both received 2 minutes for roughing. Other players weren't penalised. So, they played at 4 on 4 for 2 minutes, then when Groleau-Pinard's instigating penalty ends, Terre Septentrionale has a 3 minutes power play. Groleau-Pinard has a Gordie Howe hat trick, which is a goal, an assist and a fight. Alex-Olivier Châteauneuf left the ice on his own but he didn't come back into the game. The Nordiques scored on the power play when Karolanne Laverdière-Deslongchamps took a rebound and shot it into the net. 7-2. Finally, Sarzonia scored with 4 minutes remaining when Brett Tanguay Jr accepted George Anderson's pass and shot the puck into the net. The final score was 7-3 for Terre Septentrionale.

1st place in group

I'm not writing a boxscore because I'm running out of time to write my article, I need to do my Polish homework because I'm still in middle school. I learn Polish as a 2nd language, my first language is French. So, with this win and Graintfjall's loss against Savojarna, the Reprezentacja Nordycki is now in 1st place with 6 points in 4 games. Our next game is against Graintfjall, surprisingly one of the best team in our group. Coach Françoise Laframboise announced Frédérique Paradis will be the starting goalie against Graintfjall cuz she thinks Nikola Sakic is allowing too much goals and she wants to rest him. He allowed 12 goals in 4 games. Sarzonia's Christian Channing won't be suspended for his hit on Alex-Olivier Châteauneuf and, talking about Châteauneuf, he'll miss the game against Graintfjall with an upper body injury.

Some excerpts from GBC radio commentary over the first four games.
“…Grímúlfursson with a savage hit there. Woof, he sat Andrews down on that play. The young defenseman’s up, doesn’t look to be hurt. But a real welcome to international ice hockey moment from Grímúlfursson. Akselsson and O’Neil battling for it on the boards, and it’ll be Akselsson who comes away with it…”

“…Sofusson! The bright young prospect nets the Junior Ice Wolves’ first goal to square things up here. Quick on the wrap-around and Mair just couldn’t get down to block it. Smart release pass from Bensson for the assist…”

“…Sindrisson flips it to Viktorsson, strong on the puck, back-hand shot – goal! Viktorsson’s second, Græntfjall’s third. This is turning into an unexpected rout for the Junior Icy Wolves. Viktorsson’s not the quickest but he’s big for a 17 year old and just bullied his way through there. Smart release on the shot and Mair couldn’t see it coming through Meadows and Shea…”

“…Bensson called for the cross-check on McHolland there, doesn’t look too happy about it. Not much cause for argument on the replay. Maybe wouldn’t be called in GHL play, but this isn’t the GHL and these young guys are going to need to shape up to international rules fast. Chance for the Ice-a-phants on the power play…”

“…Guzmán sends Sofusson sprawling and that’s a tripping penalty. They’ve targeted the young gun tonight, seen as one of the Ice Wolves’ stronger players, certainly one of their quickest, but just took things too far on that play…”

“…Sofusson with the sharp reflex shot and that’s his second of the tournament! The Ice Wolves needed a goal after falling behind and Christian Sofusson came up big there, intercepting McLaren’s pass and hitting a quick wrist shot high past Landon. They’ve left it till the third quarter to score but the Ice Wolves are back in this…”

“…Sindrisson fights for the puck and comes away with it, shoots, no, feints, passes, hits Viktorsson in stride. Goal! Viktorsson with another hard shot for a well-taken goal, his third of the tournament. Sindrisson lost possession but didn’t give up, won it back a great move to set up Viktorsson…”

“…Lukasson hauls himself to the penalty box. Definitely has the physical side down but needs to refine it. You wonder about a guy like that, just 17 and already assigned to do the dirty work. Interesting role to be pigeonholed for this early in your career…”

“…time running out, 2 – 1, this is in the bank for the Ice Wolves now – and Sindrisson caroms in the slap shot off the post! Empty netter and he almost missed it, but that makes it two for the game, and with the assist, I don’t think there’ll be much competition for Player of the Game…”

“…that’s one way to slow him down! Jarl Sindrisson coming off a great game against Susuvi, and the Savorjanan defenseman decided to grab his stick. Nice try, but that’ll be penalty minutes and a power play chance for the Ice Wolves…”

“…and they make Akselsson pay for the roughing penalty by converting the power-play! Man on advantage and Savorjana reclaim the lead late in the 2nd, 2 – 1, costly penalty for Græntfjall. Urgent talking going on, they need to get back into this game…”

“…Grímúlfursson called for the cross-check, late penalty advantage to Savojarna. Taking the puck out quickly, hard off the boards, quick pass, the shot is good! Oh no, ill-discipline again costs the Junior Ice Wolves in what’s been an exciting game between the Rushmori rivals, and right at the end that’s a killer. Savojarna take the 3 – 2 lead. They’ll pull Þórarinnsson but there’s not going to be time for a play here…”

"Come on, put some effort into it!"

Andy Bailey was clearly not happy. Three straight games, three straight draws. The opening 2-2 draw to Sarzonia was understandable, as both teams were. The 1-1 draw to Graintfjall was not. Neither was the other 1-1 draw to Kohnhead. And now they were trailing 1-0 to Tikariot. "Completely typical." He said with a heavy sigh. "I might as well have stayed his Partizan if I knew that this was how coaching these guys would go." While the senior team were considered to be one of the best in the multiverse with numerous finishes in the top four before some behind-the-scenes trickery pretty much forced them to retire from international ice hockey in disgust, the junior team tended to be complete flops barring their first tournament and the second one, where it wasn't their fault that they tanked. Considering how the likes of Antonio "Toni" Cervantes, Anatoly Kasputin, Michael Madgwick, Ron Berg, Tim Furst and Stacy Saunders used to play for the junior team at some stage, it makes one wonder why they've been so consistently terrible or if it was something that only started popping up in the last few years.

In reality, the situation going on at the moment wasn't actually that bad. Tikariot had shown a lot of promise in the group stage, having won their first games against Savojarna and Kohnhead before losing to Terre Septentrionale. While they don't seem to have much of an international presence, as this seems to be the first tournament they've entered, they do seem to be getting some good results. Not consistent, but good ones. They also seem to have a solid junior league in place, maybe a draft as well though there hasn't been any research into it, and they're hoping that it'll expand into a sport that the young kids could enjoy participating in. Compare that to Elejamie where it's either University League, a dedicated youth team owned by six of the ENIHL teams (and one ENIHL2 team) or play abroad and it's no wonder why the Snowy Owls are not only leading this match but also have had a better record so far.

Regardless, he had made several changes prior to the match. While some vital lines, like the Rojo y Amarillo (Rui Calderón-Vicente Benitez + Franco Astori-Marco Ibánez-Joaquín Guzmán) were kept, the third and fourth lines were shuffled around and even some fresh faces were brought on to mix things up. Maisden was out, Westbrooke was in. Link Beckmann was replaced as a fourth-line centre by Mike Petkovich. And Lorna Peterson was starting this match whereas Kevin Landon was on the bench. Even if it meant a loss, at least it was better than another draw because it was finally something different. A win, however, was more preferable because it meant they could try and aim for a top four place and thus make it into the Round of 16, otherwise it meant the disbanding of the men's junior team (and maybe the women's should they completely fail as well).

The match actually started off fairly well. Tom McHolland won the opening face-off and started an attack that just managed to get saved by Miska Immonen, the Tikariotian goalie. Even when an attempt to pass the puck to one of his teammates was intercepted by Nick Kalinka, he still managed to save the shot and freeze it before the Elejamian offence could've made good on a chance. In fact, Immonen managed to own the first half, easily stopping any attempt on goal made by the Junior Ice-a-phants. Whether it was a slapper, a snapper, a one-timer, a deflection or even a simple shovel, he made easy work of it. Even the high shots, which seemed to be his weakness, easily failed to turn into goals as they were either too high, too inaccurate or otherwise blocked. The only goal in this period came with 7:28 left, when an attempt from Sebastian Svedberg bounced off of Peterson's pads but Anders Strandberg would get second time lucky to put the puck into the back of the net. Fortunately for both sides, the first period was free of penalties, though there were one or two moments of pushing and shoving that fortunately lead to nothing.

The second half was a dull scoreless affair where the only highlights were a few close calls by either side and a slashing penalty called on Anthony McLaren by Mikko Louhivaara. The third, however, was incredibly tense and thrilling. While the first half of it could've been described as the screencap of Andy Bailey with his head buried in his hands, taken with 13:31 left in the period when Javier Mederos was given a double minor for high-sticking Gareth McLoughlin (a penalty that was easily killed off), the second half actually went a lot smoother. Elejamie would finally equalise with 8:11 left on the clock, when Franco Astori was on the breakaway and looked like he was getting ready to shoot, only to pass it over to his line-mate Joaquín Guzmán, who'd simply gave it a gentle one-timer into the back of the net.

The second goal came with 4:50 left. Before that, it was face-off after face-off in the Tikariotian end. Whenever Elejamie would try and get a shot on goal, it either hit the post or bounced harmlessly off of Immonen. There were rare occasions where he'd freeze the puck just to give everyone a rest but it was a brief respite before the action would flare up again. There were rarer occasions where the Snowy Owls' defence would get the puck out of their end up a well-timed check or interception would return things to the status quo. Even line-changes didn't seem to have any effect as it only lead to more futility. But 4:50 was different. After Ibánez won the face-off, he would then pass it over to Guzmán. Guzmán shot it but it sailed over the goal and hit the glass at the back. Brian Goodenow managed to retrieve the puck but was on the receiving end of a solid check from Franco Astori. Astori skated around the net and shot the puck but it bounced harmlessly off of Immonen's pads. He shot the puck again and it bounced off the iron and just scraped past the line. To confirm that it was, indeed, a goal, Immonen accidentally kicked it into the back of his net with an ill-timed foot movement. Fortunately, it was revealed to have been a goal before the kick so no one could fault him for it.

After that, Andy Bailey was too busy watching the scoreboard instead of the match. After all, he was interested in keeping this lead, as minute as it was. He wanted time to hurry up and expire so he could finally sleep easy tonight. His eyes and his ears were now his two assistant coaches, Alejandro Rubio Orosco (who had retired at the end of the last season and wanted to give coaching a go to keep himself occupied) and Terry Grace (the head coach of the Davenport Dockers youth squad). They had to sort out the plans and line changes while their boss was keeping an eye on the time. Fortunately, nothing else of importance happened in the period. There was some more pushing and shoving at points but, much like the other times it happened, it didn't escalate to anything else. Not to mention that, much like the other times it happened, it was more to amp up the crowd and inject some excitement into the match, especially since they were chill with each other otherwise.

Eventually, his prayers were answered. The clock would reach 0:00 and the match would finally come to an end. When he realised what had happened, he was over the moon. Why wouldn't he be? His side had finally grabbed their first win of the tournament and were now third. Sure it means they now had a 1-3-0 record and a point differential of +1 but at least it was better than nothing. Now it was just a question of whether or not they can get a few more wins or if they'll end up with a 1-7-0 record of all things. It didn't help that they'll have to face group leaders Terre Septentrionale sooner or later, though fortunately they had games against Susuvi and Savojarna to get through first.

But Andy didn't care about that. He had the win and he took it. After the obligatory handshake after each match and the three stars reveal, the entire team went back to the locker room. Some of the players were in a various state of undress, while others just wanted a quick breather before they do anything else. In the middle was Andy Bailey. After clearing his throat to get everyone's attention, he clapped his hands together and began his speech. "First up, well done everyone for a good match. Some of you could do with improvements but I'll get to them later. I want to start with my own personal congratulations." He then turned to Lorna and smiled at her. "Congratulations on doing a great job in goal, Lorna. Some excellent saves. Don't feel bad about that one you conceded, it was just bad luck."

"Thanks, boss." Lorna said, smiling back at him. Although she felt unsure about being the first female to play for an otherwise all-male team, she was feeling a lot more confident and comfortable. Especially since the ENIHL announced that, should anyone harass her in any way, they'll be kicked off the team and, depending on the severity, get blacklisted from playing ice hockey in Elejamie. Mainly because the potential lawsuits would be a nightmare to deal with and they want them to be a team of equals regardless of race or gender, especially as they either don't get paid to pay or only get paid for the basic necessities.

Andy then turned to Franco and kept his smile. "Great job from you, Franco. A great goal and a great assist. Some excellent work from you and I might bump you up to the first line."

"Gracias, jefe." Franco said back. He was completely exhausted and just wanted to get out of here. Wiping the sweat from his brow with the sleeve of his jersey, he picked up his bottle of water and squeezed some into his mouth.

Andy looked over to his right and said "A congrats to you too, Joaquín. Great goal from you too. Hopefully you'll do a good enough job to get bumped up a line." Joaquín didn't say anything, he just nodded in approval. Andy then turned to Gregory and Anthony and gave his final congratulations. "And some good defending from you two too. Keep it up."

"Thanks." Gregory said, a slight disinterest as he too wanted to go out and get some fresh air.

"Thanks, coach." Anthony said. He was slightly more interested, especially since he was the alternate captain and he was hoping.

Andy then took a deep breath and then looked straight ahead. It was time to give out his criticisms. "Unfortunately, that's where I'm going to stop being nice. We need to improve both offensively and defensively. Especially offensively, given how few goals we've scored this tourney. While I can no longer count them on one hand, six goals in four games is not something I'm particularly pleased with." He then turned to face his first line. "Adrian, Tom, Nick, you've all been star players in your respective leagues and that's why you're line one. But I want you to stop being on autopilot and I want you to unleash your full potential. Especially you, Tom. Get some assists going and try and set up shots for your teammates. Especially since you haven't gotten a point for eight periods in a row." He then turned to face Kevin, who was originally the starter but got bumped down to backup for this match. "And Kevin, you need to exercise more, not just the bare minimum and call it. That's what's keeping you from reaching your full potential and stopping you from being a superstar. Everyone else, you either need to get out there and know your roles, try and concentrate more on setting up chances for your teammates and taking opportunities when you're absolutely sure you can get a positive result."

Having finished his piece, he left the ring of players and stood by the door. "OK, tomorrow's an off day. While we will still train as normal tomorrow, I also want to rent us some rollerskates and get a few inline hockey games going just to make sure you've been working on what I've told you. But, to celebrate your first win of the tournament, I'm going to get burgers and poutine for everyone. My treat, I'm paying. Order whatever drinks you want just as long as there's no alcohol." He opened the door and, just as he was about to walk out, he then turned to face his squad and said "I'll see you all when you're in civvies. And again, great job everyone. Well done on the win." He then walked out of the door and let it close behind him before he waited for them all to get ready. While he did feel like he was a bit harsh with a few of them but hopefully the post-match treat will be enough to inspire them to improve their performances and maybe even pose a challenge to the other teams. Only one way to find out, really.

John Walker:
Today, here at LFS13, we are interviewing a prized member of the hockey team playing in Fluvannia, John herbshire. John, what are your thoughts about how the team is doing so far?
John Herbshire:
Pretty nervous, we are doing pretty good so far, with 3 out of 5 wins, but I’m scared that I will mess up in the next game, and that it will cost the team it’s chance to win this championship.
John Walker:
Well I hope that doesn’t happen, but what are your thoughts on Fluvannia? The team hasn’t mentioned it much that I’ve heard.
John Herbshire:
It’s a pretty nice looking country, beautiful some might say, but Npc West Florida still looks better, with its palm trees and alligators, the swamps by every house. Did you know that I haven’t seen one swamp since I’ve been here?!?
John Walker:
What?!?!? That’s outrageous! Well we must move one before we convince the congress declares war because of the lack of swamps. What do you think about the other teams you’ve played against, and the ones you haven’t?
John Herbshire:
Well the ones I’ve played against, that’s a tough question. They were good players, but it’s hard for me to recognize my enemies as such. The teams we haven’t played against? They seem good but I’m not sure since I haven’t really seen any games besides the ones I’m in, but I’m having my friend record the games and I’ll tell you when I watch them.
John Walker:
Ok I guess... you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to do it, and I have one last question for you. Do you think that the Red Sticks will win?
John Herbshire:
Well yes, of course I think we will win, what type of question is that? Npc Wrst Florida has amazing hockey teams with its popularity just surpassed by the popularity of shooting.
John Walker:
Well folks that’s all we have for today, make sure to turn back to LFS13 tomorrow for more news. Goodbye John Herbshire and goodbye viewers.
John Herbshire:
Goodbye Mr. Walker and the people on the other side.

LARS THOJOSPAN SHINES AT THE TOURNAMENT
A pair of goals sees the 20-year old take over the point leader for the Falcons following a 4-2 victory
Image
Lars Thojospan's game has revolved around being a pest around the net and being able to knock home rebounds.

One of the gritty but skilled forwards on the team is making a name for himself.

Lars Thojospan, the 36th Overall Pick in the 95th OJL Entry Draft and one of the top prospects for the OJL's Horthrasburg Pirates, has been recently on fire for this tournament. Recording 2 goals against Huelavia, one being a tip-in goal from a point shot by Mikko Hazirraien, and the other being a rebound goal from a shot by Andrej Sakostropskav, Thojospan has emerged as one of the key producers for the Falcons this tournament.

The 20-year old's game has revolved around being a net presence despite his size, and using his body to generate opportunities. Additionally, his skill off the puck makes him a reliable defensive presence, something that Head Coach Pascal Dufont has made clear with Thojospan's usage on the penalty kill unit.

Being one of the more electrifying forwards, Thojospan has gelled well with Sakostrophskav and Takaar Corispan, as the line combined has recorded a whopping total of 18 points (7 goals, and 11 assists) in 5 games played. As one of the powerhouse forwards on the team, Thojospan has done his duty to attract the attention and garner the pressure from the opposing defensemen in order to create room for Corispan and Sakostrophskav to take their chances.

Look for the rest of the line-up to be more aggressive however. One notable player who has not been producing throughout the tournament is highly prized prospect Mattias Corispan, who has a dismal 1 point in 5 games played, despite both his linemates producing secondary scoring options for the Ontorisans.

Strongnight players talk hockey: Did Kelssek get buffed or something?
AUTOMATICALLY GENERATED YOURTUBE TRANSCRIPT

What's up peeps? So people were saying I should comment on this junior hockey thing, so here we go with a departure from our regular stuff as we review If you wanna see more Strongnight hockey talk, make sure you like and subscribe. After falling down the ladder Kelssek are coming up again, and did a great job beating Cassadaigua for their second win in a row. The last update did them good I think. Chris Brguljan was glitched the last couple of games but now he's picked things up so much he might even be OP. He did a great carry for the team and got the third goal to make it gg. Well done Gules.

On the blue line, we saw that Bergeron's got a great slapshot but he's a bit of a glass cannon and needs to buff up to compete at the pro level. He was spotted at a restaurant near the team hotel stuffing his face with gnocchi, keep doing that bud. Mandy Bart did some great zoning, Cassadaigua had a hard time getting any kills when they can't even breach top lane.

Aidan Mueller seems to have been converted to a jungler as Kelssek shuffled the lines, and did great on both wings. Hit the post with a shot and when matched against the Cassadaigua fourth line he made them look like minions. Jeanne Hakemi forced Cassadaigua to tower hug every time she got into the offensive zone. Or what do you call in hockey when the enemy just falls back because they know they can't 1v1 you? Anyway, great centre lane stuff from her.

So anyway, I thought it was a great showing by Kelssek, the bottom line is, all these players are young and it's gonna be interesting seeing how they scale at next level and even if some of them might do better with a move to different servers.

DOWN GOES #1

OSHKOSH, Du. Winnebago -- Earlier in this tournament, we discussed how the Fluvannia junior hockey team, due to their role as hosts, get slotted in with the harder opponents as a means of countering their relatively easy go of things due to lack of travel. Among these opponents is Siovanija and Teusland, who are known for being one of the most prestigious and talented nations on the international hockey scene; the Goldhorns, as their team is nicknamed, are the reigning champions at both the junior and senior levels. Simply put: they are really, very good.

Unfortunately for them, being "really, very good" was evidently not being good enough Saturday night in Oshkosh. For their return to the nation's capital, the Fluvannian squad faced off with their most talented opponent yet, and did they ever deliver. Six different players scored for the Cubs en route to a 7-2 thumping of the cream of international hockey's crop. To save costs on extra ink, I've been advised by the editor to not recount the entire game; as such, I will list a few highlights:

  • There were a surprising number of Siovanijan and Teus visitors in the stands for this one. Word on the street was there were a lot of hotel rooms booked under names clearly belonging to citizens of the United Republics, and that word was obviously accurate. It wasn't always easy to determine who they were rooting for though, as the fans haven't quite gotten their hands on the new national team jerseys yet. We at the DSJ will admit we rather like those new sweaters, as they complimented the Fluvannians in blue quite well.
  • The Goldhorns looked to be on the ropes early as Josef Schneider and then Emil Seidler were called for a slash and a hook, respectively. They managed to kill off the five-on-three penalty despite an impressive barrage by Flowers and company, which likely helped give them the momentum they needed to notch the game's first goal.
  • Will Malone may not be the tallest player on the Fluvannian team, but does he ever have guts. Played the body all night long, even if he seemed to take the brunt of the hits he himself was laying.
  • Schneider is a darn good hockey player. It has been evident throughout the tournament that being the last to be cut for his country's junior team last tournament has been a tremendous motivation for him ever since. Despite almost jeopardizing his squad's fortunes with the aforementioned slash, he also notched the primary assist on both goals scored by the Goldhorns.
  • The third period. All of it. You all were watching, you don't need me to recap everything, but wow. Four unanswered goals, two of them scored by Curtis Morris, transformed a one-goal lead in a tightly-contested affair to a five-goal lead (and victory) in a quickly-upended match. Ed Jackson, play-by-play man for Arena Sportsnet, said it best in his trademark North Piedmont accent: "Mahtha, the bahn's on fiah!"

From here, the last two games are still incredibly important. Group A is very tight, top to bottom; four points separate first and last. Tonight's match against Banija will likely decide whether or not the Fluvannian team advances to the single-elimination phase.

Fluvannia's schedule for group play is as follows:

Mon, Oct 12: vs. Kelssek L 0 - 1
Tue, Oct 13: @ Lorenthia L 2 - 4
Wed, Oct 14: vs. Sylestone W 2 - 1
Thu, Oct 15: @ Cassadaigua W 5 - 2
Sat, Oct 17: vs. Siovanija & Teusland W 7 - 2
Sun, Oct 18: @ Banija
Mon, Oct 19: vs. United Osean States

Listings in normal type will be played at FluvannAir Center in Oshkosh. Listings in italics will be played at Plexus Garden in Appleton.

The First Elejamian Junior Superstar

Postby Elejamie » Sun Oct 18, 2020 6:46 pm

Eduardo Frederico do Rosario Santos, otherwise known as Du, was born in Governador Valadares on August 30th, 1952. The third child out of six of a businessman and his wife, he and his family would end up moving to Edgebaston, MDLN in 1956. As a child, he was interested in soccer and would often be seen playing it in the parks and on the streets in the St. Patrick's district of the city. However, at the age of 9, he was invited to watch an ice hockey game between the Edgebaston Shamrocks and the Davenport Dockers, a match the Dockers would win 4-2. Although at that point ice hockey in Elejamie was nothing more than something that gathered a bit of mild interest, with the inaugural ENIHL season starting in 1960 and the league itself only just about making a profit, it still left a massive impression on the young Eduardo Santos. For his 10th birthday, he would receive his first ice hockey stick and pair of skates. As there were no dedicated youth clubs at the time who'd train younger players, Eduardo would have to practice his skating at the local rink and practice his skills with a ball and his feet wherever he was able to find a flat surface. While it was a bit slow and awkward at first, it ended up helping and when he was finally able to properly train himself to play ice hockey in a rink he managed to do so without too much difficulty.

His actual proper career began when he signed up for the Edgebaston Shamrocks and performed at a try-out session. There, he showed quite a lot of promise and was offered a two-year contract, becoming the first Elejameiro (Elejamian of Brazilian descent or Brazilian immigrant to Elejamie) ice hockey player. Although controversy broke out when it turned out he had lied about his age prior to his trial, claiming to be close to his 17th birthday when he was actually a few weeks shy of his 16th, he was still allowed to remain as part of the team. As a result, he was only allowed to play home games due to him still being in high school at the time and the EIHB announced that, other than Eduardo himself thanks to a grandfather clause, all ENIHL players will have to be at least 18 years old and able to verify their age. Regardless, when it was time to actually shine, he didn't do too bad of a job. While he was mostly a scratch who'd be promoted to the third defensive pair every now and then should an injury arise, he was able to help block shots and clear attempts. There were concerns about him being too defensive and his checks not being good enough to separate body from puck, however, but he still received a four year extension as he still showed a lot of promise.

Shortly before the start of the 1970/71 season, he stopped going by the name Eduardo Santos and instead called himself Du, a shortened version of his childhood nickname Dudu. Much to the dismay of Iyilim ice hockey fans, he still retained the #9 jersey instead of switching to #2. While it didn't seem to have done much to change his fortunes, as he was now a regular 3rd pairer instead of a scratch who'd occasionally get bumped up, he still used it to help improve his skills so he could be bumped up even more. Though he'd remain fully defensive, he was delivering harder checks, faster pokes and any other tricks to try and close down attacks so he could begin counterattacks. He was often nicknamed "Checkmate" by his teammates and even a few of the fans as well because of this. While it still wasn't enough to get him his promotion outside of penalty kills, injuries or ejections, it still meant that he was slowly but surely building up a fanbase.

In 1972, his life would be changed forever. Despite being considered a slightly above average player by a number of fans, he was selected to be a part of the national team's January tour of Neu Engollon, an event that, much like the tour of Quebec the previous January and Ontorisa the following January, served to help beef up the national team and make them a competitive force. While it was mostly against collegiate teams, with the odd NEHL tean thrown in before a best of three series against the international team, it would also help teach them how to deal with a more skill-based game, compared to how physical the Quebec tour got. There, Du would not only show off his talents with checking but he'd also improve on his shot blocking and would even get a few points courtesy of some assists. By the time of the first friendly against the Ibex, he had already been bumped up to the second defensive pairing. This turned out to be the spark that he needed and he ended up assisting a game one 3-0 shut out and scoring a goal of his own in game two (a 5-3 loss).

Although there were some doubts that he'd be unable to replicate that success on the ice back home, he'd take what he learnt from that tour and built up his own skills. While he was still the Checkmate, he was also more of an offensive player and he would make more of an attempt to shut down the opposition's attacks, either by trying to poke check the puck just before they could cross the line or by trying to force them offside. He would even drop the gloves against Eric Binley in a match against the Dockers in 1973, a fight that Binley would easily win even if Du managed a good few punches. In that very same season, he would finally be promoted to the first defensive pair and he was really allowed to shine. While he did seem a bit slow and rumours were abound that he'd be demoted, he soon got back into the swing of things and even trained himself harder to try and prove why he felt he deserved to be in the position he is now.

The mid 1970s was when Du was at his peak. He would win the presitigious Defender of the Season (an award given to the best defenceman of the season, as you'd expect) three times in a row: the first in the 1974/75 season, the second in the 75/76 season and the third in 76/77. It wasn't hard to see why, as he was essentially a defensive juggernaut in that period who wasn't afraid to score the odd goal or two. Sure the majority of them came from penalty shots or shootouts more often than they did actual in-play goals, but it was still enough to bump him up the scoresheet. He would even drop the gloves quite a few times during the period, mostly during garbage time, though the fights would either result in draws, losses or a very rare win to the point where it made the fans occasionally wonder why he would even bother in the first place. Though his progress started to drop off towards the end of the decade

Following the end of the 1978/79 season, he would end up being picked up by Fuego de Valledorado (Valledorado Fire) as a free agent. Although he still produced a decent amount of numbers regarding hits and assists, his stint at the club would be regularly marred with salary disputes and a lack of chemistry with teammates; he had no real issues with them outside of the odd argument but it was clearly obvious that he didn't really fit the scheme of things and was only there because of name recognition. After scoring 5 goals all season, a letdown considering he usually managed anywhere between 13-16 a season, he was traded back to the Shamrocks in time for the 1980/81 season. He would return to form there and would even get his all-time goal record with 18 goals in the 1983/84 season. However, the good times weren't to last when he turned down a contract expansion at the end of the 1984/85 season and instead announced his retirement. Although he did have plenty of life left in him, he decided to call it quits as he felt he was past his prime and he wanted to spend more time with his family.

During that time, he would teach himself how to coach. After all, he still wanted to be involved in the sport he had loved at first sight even if he wasn't lacing up his skates. He would eventually get his chance when he would be selected as a caretaker coach for his beloved Edgebaston Shamrocks at the start of the 1988/89 season. Even though it was for half a season and he was little more than a figurehead while the assistant coaches did the majority of the work, he did bump them up from 7th place to 3rd by the halfway point of the season. Although he enjoyed working there, he wanted to do things his own way and eventually he decided to pick up the head coach job at the Auckhampton Fathers. There, he lead them to some small successes but no real achievements. He would also become an assistant coach for the national team at the start of the 90s, where his work with the defence pretty much gave the Icy Elephants (a nickname that lasted until around 2019/2020) a reputation of having "three brick walls". Following the end of the 1994/95 season, where he coached the Fathers to a respectable 4th place finish in the ENIHL2, he would retire from coaching, saying that he "did everything I felt I needed to and it was time to call it a day". He'd return to Edgebaston during that Summer, where he would remain for the rest of his life.

He was quiet about his life off the ice. What is known is that he was married twice, with his first marriage lasting from 1971-1974 and ending in a divorce and his second lasting from 1976-2001, when his wife died three months before he did. He didn't have any kids from his first marriage, he had a daughter born out of wedlock in between his first and his second and his second marriage saw him have two kids. The eldest, Alexandre Gabriel Tavares Santos (born in 1978), would become an accomplished ice hockey player in his own right under the name Du Júnior. His second son, Eduardo Tavares Santos (born in 1982), would also become an ice hockey player but his career wasn't as successful as his brother's, as he would spend the majority of his career playing in the minor leagues both home and abroad before retiring at the age of 26 due to injuries and dissatisfaction with the sport. His nephew, Cesar Carrero Santos, would also have a lengthy sports career of his own albeit as a midfielder for the Edgebaston Wild, Starmath Rovers and the Berlin Diamonds.

On the morning of September 24th, 2001, Du collapsed just outside of his house while he was tending his front garden. An ambulance was called but, sadly, he died en route to the hospital from what turned out to be an aortic dissection. He was 49. Although he didn't have any history of heart problems, friends and family noted that he had been looking a lot more sickly in the days leading up to his death. As a result, the Edgebaston Shamrocks game against Davenport was rescheduled for the end of the season and the match against Barr on the Saturday began with a minute's silence; they would go on to win 3-1. Although Du Júnior wasn't playing in Edgebaston around the time, having been picked up by Ángeles the season before, he would still attend the funeral and took a break from the sport for the next two months. Per his wishes, Du was buried in the home kit he wore for his last season with the Shamrocks, including his helmet, gloves and skates.

Ten years to the day of his death, his #9 jersey was retired. The number hadn't been used for the previous season, as the last person to wear it (Julien Renaud) was sent over to the team that at the time was called the Elejamie City Ice Elephants at the start of the 2009/10 season and none of the players that came into Edgebaston wanted to use the number. Even Du Júnior couldn't be convinced to come out of retirement to wear his dad's number one last time. He did, however, raise the banner into the stands at the commemoration ceremony that took place before the match against the Mainsborough Icemen. A documentary (Du: Um Ícone, more commonly called by its English-language title Du: An Icon) was released in 2013, a giant mural of him stands in the Pequeno Brasil district of Edgebaston and a number of Elejameiro ice hockey players have credited him as an inspiration and an explanation of how they got into the sport.

John Walker:
Well everyone welcome to LFS13 today we will be talking about the increasing Npc West Florida presence in the international arena. The increased presence started shortly after the Olympic Games, in which Npc West Florida failed miserably at, with no medals in the competition, following that event the Foreign affairs department began planning to become more involved in the international community, with Juan Swayne being reported to have said “We need to stop laying down like a coward.” Shortly after the meeting that this happened at, the Republic entered into GRAIL, and as soon as possible, sent a delegation to GRAIL council, where we quickly began helping to end the slave trade. But I am getting ahead of myself, before this meeting happened, we were given a chance to go to the World Junior Hockey Championship. This honor was met with great celebration in the republic, for hockey was a very popular sport, even though we don’t have natural ice. We came into the championship expecting to lose every game, but here I stand before you, announcing that we have secured a spot in the round of 16!
This honor was unexpected by anyone in the republic, and in appreciation of the good work the team did, the president had announced that the team members will be granted a 100,000 dollar college scholarship, and a

Andy Bailey could only watch in mild bemusement at the scene that was unfolding before him.

5-1 up with 9:13 left in the third period and a line brawl had broken out. It may have been during garbage time, as it was between his third line and their fourth line, but it was still completely unacceptable. This was a junior tournament, an international one to be precise, where the aim of the game was to try and show off their skills and hopefully be talented enough to get drafted by a team. Alternatively, they would have to show off their talents and hope to receive a contract to play for someone. While there could still be a market for enforcers, power forwards or anyone else willing to drop the gloves, Andy was more concerned about what things after retirement would be like for them and the possibility of them being drafted into a league that looked down on fighting. Not to mention that, while the ENJIHL had the same rules on fighting as the ENIHL does, the University League had a zero-tolerance policy when it came to fights and he was worried that a few of these players would get in trouble because of what happened. While he was a man who was able to change his game plan on the fly depending on how the circumstances looked, even he was stumped with this turn of events.

Let's rewind to the previous game. The team sheet for the previous match was nearly the same as the match against Tikariot, with the only difference being that Kevin Landon was starting again and Lorna Peterson was on the bench. Despite slipping up defensively in their last game against Susuvi by allowing the Jackalopes' first line left-winger Quququ Paqiqu to score a hat-trick, the first time this tournament the Junior Ice-a-phants had allowed more than two goals, their offence was still on point as they were able to make it 4-3. Nick Kalinka scored three out of the four points, netting two in the first half with a slapshot from the point with 15:11 left (on the power play after Naa Ngutchiqu was sent to the box for two minutes for hooking Gregory Ericson) and a one-timer with 7:49 left on the clock after receiving a pass from Rui Calderón. Paqiqu would tie the match in the second and give his side the lead early in the third, although it'd be a short-lived one. With 15:33 left, Rui Calderón would score a goal of his own with a rebound after Franco Astori's shot was deflected by Huja Jikavi's stick and then, with 2:14 left, Kalinka would complete his hat-trick with a glove-side wrist shot. As hard as they tried, Susuvi was unable to pull one back and Elejamie would get their second consecutive win.

Pleased with this run of form they're on, Andy decided to make some changes. He decided to go back to the line-up he had for the opener against Sarzonia. Maisden was restored to the third defensive pairing and Link Beckmann returned to the fourth line. Everyone else who was shuffled around was returned to their original pair of line. The only real difference between this game and the first game was that there was a different starter. Instead of Kevin Landon, who was scratched for this game, Andy decided to start Sergio Javier Vega Menendez, aka Seve. Considering that going into this match Savojarna were dead last with only one win (3-2 over Graintfjall), whereas Elejamie were near the top and one of two teams left in the tournament who have yet to be defeated, Andy could afford to take a risk. Not to mention that it would give any scouts a good chance to finally analyse the other Elejamian goalie just in case they would like to draft him.

The match started off very well for the away side. Despite an early penalty from Adrian Backer for cross-checking, the event occuring just 29 seconds into the period, the Junior Ice-a-phants were able to kill off the penalty with relative ease. Savojar were also able to kill off their first penalty of the match when they were down a man for a high-sticking single minor. In fact, they'd also get the first goal of the match with a bit of clever deking and teamwork with 13:09 left in the period, with a shot that sailed behind Seve and into the back of the Elejamian net. The Junior Ice-a-phants were quick to answer, though. Not even a minute later, with 12:12 left on the clock in fact, Mateo Ibáñez scored his first goal on the breakaway also thanks to a well-timed toe drag. Elejamie would get a second power play thanks to a bench minor due to a poorly-timed line change resulting in a "too many players on the ice" call. They'd use this to their advantage when Tom McHolland easily managed to deliver a perfectly-timed wrist shot to send the puck over the goalie's stick to make it 2-1. However, while Elejamie were better at converting their chances into goals, they were still outshot in the first period and Savojarna were winning the face-offs more often. On paper it seemed like they were the better team but, as the fans would later discovered, that turned out not to be the case.

The second period was a bit more quieter than the first. Elejamie were still getting outshot but they were getting better at the face-offs. Savojarna were also intercepting the puck more and easily blocking the shots. They were, however, unable to put the puck past Seve. He was giving them a free demonstration of how good he was with the glove. Pucks would be frozen just as quickly as they were fired at him. He even showed a slight bit of improvement with his blocker, though he still had to rely on his defenders to bail him out from time to time. The only person to score in the period? Adrian Backer, simply because Tom McHolland's shot bounced off the Savojar goalie's pads and Backer was quick enough with the rebound. There were also no penalties this period, although there were a couple of offsides from each team.

The third period was where all the action was. That solid defending that frustrated the Junior Ice-a-phants throughout the first two periods? It seemed to have disappeared as the defence felt a bit sluggish and their opponents capitalised on it. Elejamie made it 4-1 early on in the period when, with 19:12 left, Franco Astori scored with a backhander that just sailed out of reach for the Savojar goalie. He very nearly scored what could've been his second goal of the match but it was ruled off when the net was accidentally dislodged. His linemate, Mateo Ibáñez, would get his second goal of the match with 12:06 left with a one-timer off of Anthony McLaren's pass, which gave the Ice Cats defenceman and alternate captain a hat-trick of assists. Savojarna's offence, however, still remained top notch as they kept giving the Elejamian defence occupied with shot after shot, some coming closer than others but all of them either being saved, cleared or blocked.

And then we come in where we left off, with hell breaking loose. With 9:13 left in the period, Javier Mederos had finished passing the puck to Mical Naerimol when suddenly he was on the receiving end of a powerful check. Although video analysis later confirmed that it was delivered cleanly and legally, Paul Diamandis still took exception to it and dropped the gloves. Just as the first blow was landed, the checker's teammate took exception and also dropped the gloves, trying to get a fight going with Diamandis. Ian Camilleri dropped his gloves and took him up on his offer. It wasn't long before sticks and gloves were thrown onto the ice and everyone coming to blows with each other. Even Seve and his opposite number were trading blows with each other. While the refs and linesmen were able to break up a couple of the fights before they lead to anything worse, they weren't so lucky with the others. Both Savojar defencemen, along with Mederos and Liam Maisden, were bloody by the time they were either too tired to carry on fighting or were separated by the officials. Seve, Diamandis and Naerimol won their fights, Mederos and Camilleri fought to a draw and Maisden lost his fight.

Despite both coaches' biggest fears, the line brawl didn't turn into a bench-clearer. The Savojar coach was telling his players to keep out of it and just cheer for those on the ice. Andy, on the other hand, just kept watching the events unfold. Rather than get involved in the fight, both groups of players on the bench instead just cheered on their teammates. The only player who wanted to get off the bench was Shaun Danielewicz and it wasn't because he wanted to join the fight, instead he wanted to go for a toilet break as he forgot to during the intermission. Luckily he was able to hold it in but he kept eyeing the edge of the bench as if he wanted to get out of there, which caused some levels of concern. Once the fight was broken up, some players were taken to the dressing room, a few others were sent to the box. Seve was benched for the rest of the match and Kevin Landon took his place between the pipes instead; the same thing happened with the Savojar goalie.

When the ice was clean enough for play to resume, the cheering from the fans had died down and things went back to normal. Despite overall being on the losing end of the brawl, Savojarna was the team that was more pumped up by it. They were playing more cohesively and more defensively while at the same time trying to tip the scales in their favour on the attacking front. They would even get a goal with exactly 7:00 left on the clock, courtesty of a powerful slapshot that Landon was just able to grab but wasn't able to save it properly. Unfortunately, this massive boost turned out to be short-lived as Adrian Backer would score his second goal of the evening, a short-handed one to be precise after Nick Kalinka was sent to the box for interference, courtesy of a well-timed wrist shot that sent the puck through the five-hole. With 37.2 seconds left on the clock and Savojar goalie now on the bench, Carlton would get his first goal of the tournament thanks to an empty netter when he let out a powerful shot from the neutral zone. Just in time too as if he had delayed it by a second, maybe quicker, then Beckmann probably would've been caught off-side. Final score: 7-2.

The win was a massive blessing for them. They ended up shooting up to the top of Group C with a 3-3-0 record and 9 points, mainly because Terre Septentrionale lost their match to Kohnhead (meaning they're now second and third respectively). They're one of two teams left in the competition who still have yet to lose a game, with Anthor being the other one as they remain top thanks to a 6-4 win over Flekkefjord, a 5-1-0 record and 11 points. In fourth place, there's Sarzonia who were just holding on with a 2-2-2 record. There was an unofficial three-way tie for 5th place as Graintfjall, Susuvi and Tikariot all have a 2-1-3 record but they're only separated by their point differentials: 0, -1 and -4 respectively. They, alongside Kohnhead and Sarzonia, will have to win their next games to stand a chance of making it through to the next round. Savojarna, however, will now have to play for pride as they've been eliminated, a disappointing fate for the junior version of a talented national team.

Now there was only one game left. The big one against Terre Septentrionale. If they win or even draw then they'll finish top of the group. If they lose then they'll either slip down to second or third, depending on whether or not Kohnhead win their game against. While they'll still qualify for the next round regardless of the result of this next match, they'd rather get the win just to finally show that the junior team can be a dominant force. But there was a slight issue. Andy would be down six players due to that brawl. He wasn't too concerned about Seve; the kid can handle himself, he was primarily a third-string goalie and he only needed two goalies with him to play an actual game. But now he needed to replace an entire line and a pair with his backup players as a result of what happened. The good news was that he had enough players to do so, the bad news was that unless this suspension gets shortened and some of his players get injured then he'll be stuck. He'll sort out the logistics of it later, for now he just wanted to congratulate his team on their win and pump them up for what'll be their biggest match of the tournament so far. And maybe a drink or two to steady his nerves.

Ontorisa Moves On to the Round of 16
Alexei Tjolosburg emerged as one of the stars of the tournament with a 1.29 GAA and a SV% of .933

Mikael Ethwissen [Left] and Alexei Tjolosburg [Right] congratulate one another following Tjolosburg's 2-0 shutout of Ethane.

Ontorisa is back on top!

Following a 2-0 win over the nation Ethane, seeing goals from Mikael Ethwissen and Marjos Radislav, Ontorisa has clinched the #1 Seed in the World Junior Hockey Championship. The dominating performance by the Falcons have been on the backs of their top scorers in Andrej Sakostrophskav & Lars Thojospan, as well as the backstopping effort of 17-year old Alexei Tjolosburg. Additionally, Pascal Dufont's system of heavy checking 3rd & 4th lines have also played a key aspect in ensuring the Ontorisans possess a strong defensive line.

"It's great to be here." Ontorisan captain, Tomas Xammhosburg said to media. "We've got a great group of guys here and we're hungry for a championship."

Xammhosburg led all Ontorisan defensemen in points with 6 assists. His key production enabled the Ontorisans to a quick transition game and the ability to absorb pressure and counter-attack. All eyes are on Alexei Tjolosburg, who comes as the top ranked domestic goalie prospect for the OJL, and the second best goalie prospect right behind Eglasouran goalie Pekke Japaine.

Ontorisa will face longtime opponents in the Royal Kingdom of Quebec this Wednesday. Look for Dufont to insert defensively-minded players in the line-up to counter their speedy and high-pressure offensive strategy.

The Weekly Wardens
WARDENS ADVANCE INTO PLAYOFFS,

A Broadcasting Commentary Brought To You By: ABSN's own Gareth Yannic

HENRIETTA - Are you ready for some anticipation and anxiety my fellow Warden fans? If you're Anthoran and a sports fan, these should be very familiar feelings, as the Wardens become the most recent international team from our kingdom to reach the playoff stage for a tournament, despite the loss in the final match against NPC West Florida 3-5; this loss was their only on the season, and it was also the highest scoring match they have played in thus far, and while it caused them to lose out on the number one seed, Ontorisa swiping it instead after a tidy 2 nil victory over Ethane. Still, while this turn of events which also included an injury to top defense producer Brendon Caulfield, I do not believe pause should be given as the Wardens on McClelland have exceed what I'm sure is nearly every expectation in their debutant edition in the World Junior Hockey Championship. If you told me that back before the start of this tournament, when the Federation and the Ministry of Sport hired on McClelland and decided to form the team and enter it into competition that a playoff berth, and as the #2 seed no less, would be in the bag.

Firstly, to address the loss, McClelland openly stated before the game that he was going to be resting Micah Mallinson, Kenneth Ewart, Lucien Douglas and Ewan Tholvil - which if you've been paying attention and watching their prior matches are some of the top four best performers on the team. The offense was trimmed down from four lines to three, and the defense had both Yanis Brand and Cyril Seamussen playing on the second and third line - Brand has gotten some playing time previously, notably brought in during the second half on two games to replace either Rio Ferdinand or Gilbert Kristoffersen whom have both struggled to remain effective or consistent in Ferdinand's case. Brand performed moderately well, but never performed well enough or long enough to gain a permeant dressed spot and has remained a scratch throughout the tournament, while Seamussen has not yet dressed for a game and the first playoff match against Tikariot will be his first. This will be of a particular concern just due to the lack of time on the ice, but also because their opponents the Snowy Owls like to play with a very heavy foot, offensively forward and press hard on the attack; if Caulfield hadn't been injured, they may have had an option for a fourth line on defense instead of offense but with him confirmed out for at least this game, that option is rendered moot. However, I'm sure they are getting extra attention in the pre-gameday training sessions and moreover, with Mallinson, Ewart, Douglas and Tholvil all getting a night off, they will be extra rested and honestly, all though the defense was weak in their last game, their offense has me very excited for the future.

How could we begin to talk about the Warden's success this tournament without mentioning Micah Mallinson or Lucien Douglas? I expected Mallinson to be good, two years a professional in the Federation and a member of the championship winning side last season, he has serious experience that I'm sure was nothing but an upside here. However Douglas' play as been a particular delight, because unlike Mallinson it was completely unexpected. He's had a small amount of social media presence regarding his ability, but it's been limited to regions around his hometown in the North but his electric performance and team leading 11 goals have turned him from a fringe amateur player into a hotly discussed prospect, and one that may enter the Federation's draft this year and go very high, potentially even the first round. While he doesn't have the most traditional pedigree of prospects, the skills he's put on ample display here have been across a wide array and have flashed many a talent, and a skill. A concern was if with his small size he could be a true two-way forward, which is a rare ability on this Warden's team, but he has proven and shown a strength that is larger than his frame lets on and has proven to be very skilled with the stick, scoring more then his fellow forward Mallinson who only had 7 goals this tournament so far, and while at first I thought he was over-rated when McClelland placed him on the second line initially, I strongly believe he's a solid first line forward but provides capable depth and strength to the Warden and his coach's strategy - I believe it's quite clear he has better ability than Cameron and maybe Kasen. Even more of a surprise was young teenager Kjetil Grover, the sixteen year old from Pancras High School has outplayed his youth and shown a tenacity to pursue further success that saw McClelland promote him up to the second line, and with good reason - he's fourth in points on the Warden, second with the fewest penalty minutes while at the same time tied for fourth with hits or checks, and second in assists. For someone who plays for a purely amateur side, that's a performance that professional players would be envious of, and he has only continued to warm up the further the Wardens get, he will surely be apart of the performance against the Snowy Owls.

Locker Room
Ritter Colosseum
Henrietta, Fluvannia

Coach Taranto sauntered into the locker room after the game. He was proud of the men...and women...It would take him some time to get used to that...of the Junior Ibex.

He had started out rough on them, their first couple losses. Even though they only had a handful of veterans left from last year’s Junior Hockey Championship, he had expected a lot of them from the amount of time they had trained together. True, some of his best talent had aged out to the pro leagues, and he’d shed a figurative tear or two over that. Still, there was a lot of potential with this new crop and he wasn’t going to let them give up on it.

He put his foot up on one of the benches. The wood planking was oddly slippery.
“Gentlemen...and ladies…” There was a pause as they entered from the women’s shower room tastefully clad in tracksuits. It was the first year that they had been forced to allow women into the Junior Ibex. Three had made it to the starting lines and despite what Taranto felt, more would likely be on the way next season. Things were changing in the Confederacy, and if anyone asked him, it wasn’t for the better.

“You beat Sannyamathland. Good for you all...I think. Look, we had this talk after that loss to Abanhfleft and tie with Flekkefjord. You guys are a power to be reckoned with, but you’re no Ibex. Not the real guys. You have a ways to go to actually make it to the Ibex, let alone compete with the top echelons that hit the ice every World Cup of Hockey. You somehow made it out of group stage. I mean...I know how. You have it in you, but I don’t think you all know how you did it. You people need to keep it up, you need to step it up. This is the big leagues now. If you think it’s easy coasting from here, you can just pack it up now and let your teammates officially carry the slack, instead of just making them do it while you go through the motions…

We go up against some nation called the Republic of Dixie next. I’m going to leave the obvious part of that for the time being. This can NOT be the point we throw our gloves down and just give up. You need to fire it up unlike you have this whole Championship...people. Make them feel how you feel now, struggling against a team from Sannyamathland. Get dressed. Blow off some steam and get some sleep before tomorrow. We’re doing drills early in the morning so don’t overdo it, ladies...and ladies.”

Coach Taranto sauntered out much the way he had entered, leaving the Junior Ibex to absorb that.

CUBS WIN AGAIN, FACE SYLESTONE IN RD. OF 16

OSHKOSH, Du. Winnebago -- Things were looking pretty good for the Fluvannia junior hockey team heading into last night's game against the United Osean States. While they had not yet secured a spot in the Round of 16, they had won four straight and were tied for most points in Group A, losing the tiebreaker on head-to-head points with Kelssek, who beat the Cubs in each team's first game of the tournament. That said, there was no reason to kick back and simply assume things would go their way; the only surefire method of advancing was to win their fifth straight game and stake a spot in the tournament's second half.

Thankfully, the team's good discipline ensured that they kept their foots on the gas; while their style of play was certainly cool and confident, it was that same confidence that enabled them to manage the game and notch a 2-1 victory against the Junior Patriots of the UOS. This is not to suggest that the Patriots were playing sloppily; quite to the contrary, they played an extraordinarily clean game, perfectly collected as they themselves were seeking a spot in the next round. Going into the game, they trailed the Cubs by a single point, and were hoping to leapfrog them in the standings; only a collected and level-headed night on their end would lead to such a victory.

The first period was truly uneventful; neither team scored, nor were any penalties drawn. A few icings here and there, and at one point the Cubs were called offside. One got the impression that both teams were probing each other, attempting to discover a weakness in order to exploit it in such a way as to not be penalized. The second was likewise clean, but lack of a power play did not mean no scoring occurred; both teams got on the board, with Cubs center Teimo Peräjärvi redirecting a slapshot from Will Malone just past the three-minute mark, and Patriots defenseman Harry Jenkens scoring on a slapshot of his own at 17:43.

The third period is one the UOS team would probably like back. Only one penalty -- a high-stick that wasn't really intentional by Jenkens, on which the Cubs failed to convert. But the ending of the game is one you are unlikely to see again any time soon. With about a minute and a half left on the clock, Patriots coach Faron Milkkenin signaled netminder Mikail Pavelyuk to the bench for an extra attacker -- despite the fact that the game was tied. Ultimately, it's a gutsy play call by Milkkenin, as his team really couldn't settle for a tie; a win was almost necessary if they were to advance. Unfortunately, this gamble backfired, as Dennis Martau was able to pot an empty-net goal from center ice with 32 seconds to go. With Pavelyuk pulled again, the extra attacker was still unable to get the Patriots a goal to re-tie the game, and the 2-1 score stood at the final siren.

Luckily for Milkkenin, the Patriots managed to advance anyway, as only one of the three teams a single point behind them managed to win; that team was Sylestone, against whom the Fluvannians have drawn a rematch in the Round of 16 (the Cubs won their first game). As it turns out, all four of the Group A teams get rematches, as the Patriots will play group winner Kelssek. Two other group-play rematches are on the docket, as 1-seed Ontorisa faces off against the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, and #7 Elejamie and #10 Sarzonia play as well.

Fluvannia's schedule for group play is as follows:

Mon, Oct 12: vs. Kelssek L 0 - 1
Tue, Oct 13: @ Lorenthia L 2 - 4
Wed, Oct 14: vs. Sylestone W 2 - 1
Thu, Oct 15: @ Cassadaigua W 5 - 2
Sat, Oct 17: vs. Siovanija & Teusland W 7 - 2
Sun, Oct 18: @ Banija W 4 - 1

John Walker:
Welcome to LFS13. I'm your host, John Walker, and we are here to talk about the recent game in the WJHC. First off we placed an amazing 1st place at the end of round 16, beating our opponent, Nova Anglicana, with a score of 2-0 at the Sudatsuyo Center, Harrisonburg, Fluvannia. It was announced recently that we will be playing Fluvannia at the Ferdinand Hurst Colosseum, Scottsville. Well now we will be interviewing William Nicholson of the Red Sticks, William how are you feeling

William Nicholson:
I’m feeling fine, a little exhausted but fine

John Walker: good very good, how are you feeling about the game with Fluvannia.

William Nicholson:
I feel good, I honestly feel like we will win, I had a dream last night, and Margaret herself said that if we sacrificed a rubber chicken before every game we will win it, so that’s what my team is doing.

John Walker:
Ok then, sacrifice your rubber chicken to that weird sports goddess, but don’t say I didn’t warn you when you set your uniform on fire

William Nicholson:
I won’t set my uniform on fire, and please stop sounding like my dad.

John Walker:
Ok then, everyone thank you for watching the interview and I’m sorry, but this is all the time we have today goodbye.

BREAKING NEWS
Our WJCH team, the red sticks, was just spotted going to a hill and setting up an altar, at this time it is unknown what their intentions are, We sent out John Walker to interview them and capture the making of the altar on camera.

John Walker:
Hello and this is what the altar looks like: It is 5 feet long and 3 feet wide, made out of stone covered in wood, 4 feet tall with a stack of firewood on top.
I will be talking to William Nicholson again about this, William what is the meaning of this?

William Nicholson:
We are sacrificing a rubber chicken, just as Margaret commanded us to do in my dream!

John Walker:
Yeah your crazy this interview is over go on doing your crazy stuff while it is videos for our viewers

William Nicholson:
There will be a day, when Margaret reigns supreme over The Republic!!!

John Walker:
Just do it before I call the police

William Nicholson:
Ok but I’m only doing it now because I want to do it now, you can’t make us do it now

John Walker:
Well now that I took care of that here is the sacrifice
William Nicholson walks to the alter
William Nicholson:
Margaret Goddess of the Sports, here is and accept our sacrifice we make today and let us live in prosperity and win in the games

Rest of the team:
Let it be so

William Nicholson puts the rubber chicken on the altar
William Nicholson:
Today we are gathered here to sacrifice this rubber chicken to Margaret, my dear countrymen

William Nicholson Picks a knife up
William Nicholson:
As I lift up this knife, Margaret will look upon us and bless us

Rest of the team:
Let it be so, let it be so

William Nicholson cuts a rope and uses it to tie the rubber chicken to the alter
William Nicholson:
As I prepare the chicken for sacrifice, Margaret will strengthen our bones and weaken the bones of our enemies

Rest of the team:
Let it be so, let it be so, let it be so

Rest of team begins playing drums

William Nicholson sets the rubber chicken on fire
William Nicholson:
As this is burned unto Margaret, victory will be guaranteed!

Rest of team:
Let it be so, let it be so, let it be so, let it be so

John Walker:
Well they sacrificed a rubber chicken, but will this “Margaret” listen to them? More importantly, does “Margaret” even exist? Tune in after the game to find out.

[ARENA SPORTSZONE TRANSCRIPT]

(A pair of men are seated behind a news desk in a television studio.)

"Evening everyone, and welcome to Sportszone. Stuart van Pelt with my longtime co-host Taro Tsujimoto -- let's get into it. Big story of the day, the Fluvannia junior hockey team advancing to the quarterfinals of the World Junior Hockey Championship with a 3-1 win over Sylestone, a rematch of one of the group-play games. The Cubs won that first game 2-1, and Sylestone came out looking for revenge, but they fell short and the Cubs were able to advance. Joining us now from the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville is team captain Barry Flowers, Barry, good evening."

(A young man shows up as the screen splits to add his feed.)

FLOWERS: "Evening Stuart, thanks for having me."

SVP: "Big win for the team tonight against Sylestone, walk us through things a bit."

BF: "Well, we knew they were going to come out pretty hard. We had already played each other during the group stage, so both teams had the advantage of being a little more familiar with the other. I think they knew we were capable of coming back against them, since that's how we won our group game, so I think they wanted to try and build up an early lead fast, but we were able to score first and that really deflated them a bit, you could tell."

SVP: "You actually had the assist on that first goal, a give-and-go with Andrew Harris. The team has scored a few goals on give-and-go plays now, is that a play you guys tend to focus on in practice, or did it just shake out that way?"

BF: "Well, we don't really practice that sort of thing very often, I mean it's sort of hard to practice something like that too much when you don't really expect to get too many two-on-one opportunities. We do touch on them a little here and there though, and evidently we've been getting a lot of practical experience here too." (laughs)

SVP: "Let's talk for a minute about Cody Pearson. He's been pretty strong for you in net after a bit of a rocky start; how have you all responded to his increase in quality of play?"

BF: "Cody's been pretty darn solid back there for a while now; we have the luxury of knowing when things might break down a bit in front of him he's always ready. Goaltending wins championships, and so far he's been in that sort of form."

SVP: "Let's talk a bit quick about your opponents in the quarterfinal, NPC West Florida. What all have you guys seen of their play, what sort of measures are you taking to prepare for them?"

BF: "We've watched some of their tape, at least, in preparation, so I think we're about as ready as we could be for them. They're sort of a surprise, really, they're in their first tournament and have gotten to the quarterfinals, so we're not going to underestimate them, but I think if we stay confident we'll be able to keep the streak going."

SVP: "Barry, thanks for talking with us, congrats on the win tonight and good luck tomorrow."

BF: "Thanks again, Stuart, take care."

(The feed returns to just Stuart and Taro in the studio.)

SVP: "After the break, discussion on the senior team, as they prepare for World Cup 41, talk on this year's unusual FHL schedule, and the Hurling Association considering suspending play until next year."

The Weekly Wardens
DISSAPEARING ACT ON DEFENSE, BUT ENOUGH TO MOVE INTO QUARTERFINALS

A Broadcasting Commentary Brought To You By: ABSN's own Gareth Yannic

OSHKOSH- If it were possible for me to tap a microphone in Hugo McClelland's ear, it would be certainly to remind him that whomever coined "defense wins championships" may perhaps ought to be listened to as the Wardens have slogged through a tenacious shootout to move the mark one stage closer as they chase a Finals berth, having overcome Tikariot 6-5 and will now face the darkhorse and fellow debutant Republic of Dixie who have done well and secured an 8th seed into the knockouts and trumped Neu Engollen, a name of repute in the professional international hockey scene, and the two teams will rumble for a chance to fight in the semi-finals later this evening at the FluvannAir Center in downtown Oshkosh.

My prediction about the Tikariot offense being tough to manage proved correct, as the Wardens let in a tournament-high 5 goals, three alone coming in the first half from their star forwards that have dominated all season long, Ewan Tholvil had an extremely hard time keeping up with countering the opposing first and second line and that left Joel Brenton to effectively having to split coverage which is what led to the Owls exploiting a lot of holes in the first half; post the return to action in the second half, Hugo shifted his lines around and made Brenton and Vrari the first line, while shuffling Tholvil and Brand to the third line and Kristoffersen and Ferdinand to the second. Offensively, there is not much that was done poorly outside of it is definitely showing that for next season, McClelland will want to spend extra time honing instruction and skills on developing the likes of Matters, Grovers, Douglas, Beck and Kasen into true dual-threat forwards; Douglas was able to play his tenacity and become mostly effective on the defense, and Beck was able to do the same with his agility but Grovers' youth finally was a obstacle he couldn't overcome and Kasen looked horribly out of place each time he was found on the back-skate.

As they cross into focusing on facing the Dixie's in the quarterfinals, McClelland has doubled down on his comments ahead of the Tikariot matchup, explaining he continues to believe the lines are set perfectly as they are now to maximize each of his skaters highest potentials and leverage their skills towards contributing into positive production and a Warden's victory though the one alteration he conceded was potentially swapping Brand into the dressed status as a line three or four appearance as Seamussen completely failed to impress during the Tikariot and give him many reasons to keep him on the active roster. My personal bet is the Tikariot ferocity was a wakeup for the sluggish defenders and they manage to turn it around and lock Dixie down, I'm expecting the Wardens to win by two goals to one.
