Any ties in winning percentage for qualification will first reference head-to-head result when two teams are tied (or a larger tie has been reduced to two teams), then average run difference per game, then average runs scored per game. The same scheme will be used to seed qualified teams of similar winning percentages within the knockout bracket.

The knockout phase

Knockouts begin Thursday, May 20, 2010. Teams will be seeded from #1 to #18 for the playoffs. The seeds #1 to #6 will go to the top team in each pool, with seeds #7-12 divided amongst the second-place finishers and #13-18 amongst the third-place teams.

All knockout matches are best of three games, except the championships (best of five) and the third place game (one game). The better seed bats last in games 1, 3, and 5. Venues are all neutral diamonds in the host nation, and will be detailed in the next post.

Play-in series (Thu-Sat, 20-22 May): #15 seed vs #18 seed, #16 seed vs #17 seed. All other teams get a break.

VEPHRALL Auric Wolves

(roster subject to change before start of play)

Manager #3 Netgorin Sarashe
Pitching coach #29 Rilin Sadiques

Venue
Previous all-purpose national stadium Ellime e Vephrall was finally demolished, so the national team has moved over to newly-constructed Capitals Park. Home to the VTB's Meice Capitals, it seats 52,800.

Starting lineup
1. 3B #24 Diors Pagliloe — With the departure of former leadoff man Menburid Tingacens, Pagliloe, formerly Vephrall's most productive bench player, jumps into the starting lineup to take his place.
2. 2B #12 Mucar Kadorisone (female) — The team's only female starting position player is so quiet that sometimes teammates forget she's even there, but she's solid at every phase of the game.
3. RF #7 Jing Sytrobes — The most outgoing starter with respect to garnering attention from the media.
4. CF #5 Juchona Taratchy — The team captain has often been found on the practice field at 3 AM in an effort to do whatever it takes for his team to win.
5. C #16 Einy Nastadgus — Swings a big bat and has a cannon of an arm, making up for lack of speed on the basepaths.
6. SS #26 Torossud Hesaramba — There's no "protagonist" on this team, but if there were, it would be this guy. The youngest starter on the team, he is the very definition of "clutch", but he's almost completely useless in relatively unimportant situations, such as the first three or four innings of most games. Formerly played 2B, and is still comfortable there.
7. 1B #20 Parogam Baspaalt — Named vice-captain despite relative inexperience, he's also capable of playing most infield positions.
8. LF #1 Dings Cuizamed — Very versatile, capable of playing almost any position outside the battery. He has played third base in previous Classics, but shifted to left field when Menburid Tingacens retired from the team.
9. Pitcher's slot at home; when playing in a DH park, Juchona Hetag takes this spot.

Bench
C #8 Dings Hahnea — No relation to Baspaalt Hahnea.
OF #11 Baspaalt Hahnea — Range isn't great, nor is his arm, but he can definitely hit for average.
OF #22 Juchona Hetag — Supposedly the "next big thing," some pundits were more than a little surprised to hear he'd be sitting on the bench.
OF #23 Mocks Dustele
IF #14 Meniarol Preptyrs
IF #19 Yre Echeng

Pitching Rotation
1. RHP #49 Jing Crublig — An ace in every definition of the word, and also capable of being effective out of the bullpen in the unlikely event that the situation should warrant it.
2. RHP #6 Sytrobes Diors — The token knuckleballer, he'll never be accused of overpowering the batter, but is still likely to cause the batter to throw his bat across the diamond in utter frustration.
3. LHP #38 Rutako Nore
4. RHP #18 Boimoks Lit
5. LHP #42 Pazyheas Ochaates

Bullpen
RHP #41 Gackbang Wilopteere — If you look up "calm" in the dictionary, you'll find a photo of him. In other words, he's the guy to bring in when the bases are loaded with nobody out.
RHP #10 Diors Edroklis
LHP #33 Jisse Koran (female)
RHP #58 Pentove Mopukest
LHP #13 Bunsars Woshash — While Netgorin Sarashe doesn't really believe in the idea of a "closer", Woshash is effectively the team's closer.

RP Permissions
Please adhere to the given starting rotation. As a general rule, I'd suggest that you follow my standard lineup as well, but that's more flexible – if you can come up with a good reason for a change, have at it. You can also eject or injure my players, but any lingering effects beyond the end of the game will be decided by me. Also, we absolutely, positively do NOT use the designated hitter rule at home. Frankly, we'd rather saw off our own legs with a Swiss army knife. Attempting to argue with a Vephraller in favor of the DH rule is almost certain to start a fight. Don't even bother. Other than that, it's all up to you.

(ooc: No offense is meant TBI by any of the Preview comments...)
QSPN.com/ W B C 15 Coverage

PREVIEW:
Milchama and Newmanistan AND Qazox? Arguably the 3 best teams ever in WBC history are all in the same group? And here we thought that everyone the group draw for World Bowl IX was the worst group draw ever. The Pheonix bring back only Brianna Hayes from the roster that underachieved at the last two WBC's. Qazox will still utilize a 4-person rotation. Offensively, Qazox, recently has gone from a hit-and-run, steal 10 bases type of team to a more pull-hitter/3-run HR type of team and it hasn't worked. So the team will attempt to bring back the single-2 stolen bases and a sac-bunt/fly= 1 run type of team. Qazox has 4 women starting on the field and 4 on the mound as well, as the team is becoming more gender equal.

Also in Qazox' group are newcomers Emothica & Verdriet, and a returning Virabia. Qazox should be able to win all 6 games vs. those three teams and if they are lucky earn splits with bith Milchama and Newmanistan. That would give the Pheonix an 8-2 record, which should be good enough to make the finals in The Babbage Islands. The trip to TBI begins vs. Milchama and ends vs. Newmanistan, so the 1st and 10th games will most likely be the two toughest home games that the team will face. In the middle of the qualifying round, a Milchama-Newmanistan road trip seems to be the key to the entire round. IF Qazox loses both, they might not make it to the playoffs.

Head Coach: David Dell (1st WBC)

STARTING LINEUP vs. RHP: (Bats/Throws)

CF- Thomas Brown L/L: Great Drag bunter and lightning quick, great arm, but no power.
3B- Juanita Sanchez L/R: Would be a 5-tool player, but is a bit slow. Great range at third and can hit it to any field.
LF- Dyana Garski L/R: Can play any OF position, good speed and power and great glove. Does have trouble hitting to left.
1B- Jason Tyson R/R: Tons of power, and a great glove for a 1st baseman. Does strikeout a bit.
2B- Chad Savoy R/L: Best glove on team and good power hitter. But is very impatient at plate and is a bit slow.
C- George Rabbinski S/L: A rarity, a left-handed catcher. Accurate arm and only Switch-hitter on team. Patient hitter at plate, strikes out rarely.
RF- Victoria Wright L/R: Would be lead-off hitter if she had more speed. Best contact hitter on team and works every count.
SS- Adele Grahame R/L: Good arm, decent speed and good contact hitter. Struggles vs. Lefties.
    P- (see below)
DH- Grant Calvin L/R: Has great power, but struggles with consistent contact at the plate.
(DH will bat 6th in games involving a DH)

STARTING LINEUP vs. LHP: (Bats/Throws)
RF- Mike Stiller R/R: A speed demon, but only has an average arm and range in the field.
    1B- Jason Tyson R/R
    LF- Dyana Garski L/R
    2B- Chad Savoy R/L
    C- George Rabbinski S/RL
3B- Diane Riggles R/R: Ok arm and range at third, but hits lefties like crazy and has good speed.
    RF- Grant Calvin L/R
    SS- Adele Grahame R/L
    P- (see below)
    DH-Juanita Sanchez L/R
(DH will bat 4th in games involving a DH)

STARTING PITCHING:
Eric Shoppach RHP: 4-seam Fastball has been clocked at 101. Strong slider and 2-seamer and a good change-up.
Jeanne Atkins RHP: Great slider and 2-seamer. Servicable changeup and curve.
Brianna Hayes RHP: Throws a 95 mph fastball, and has a great 11-5 curve and a decent slider.
Charles Waskica LHP: Circle-change and knuckle-curve are his out pitches as his fastball rarely tops 92mph. Does throw a cut fastball that gets most lefties out as well.

BULLPEN:
LRP: Ryan Batiste R/LHP: Strange duck as he can throw both righty and lefty. Fastball and curve are better right-handed, slider and circle-change are better left-handed. Can start in cases of injury.
MRP: Rene Coleman- RHP: Good slider and cruve. Fastball can be hit, but she doesn't throw it that often. Great control.
SU: Mikkala Chalmers- RHP Best control of bul-pen. But fastball only tops out at 88 and curve hangs a bit. Nasty changeup gets most batters out.
Closer: Nathan Hobbes- LHP: Cut Fastball and 12-6 curve are out-pitches. Knuckle-curve is good but can be hit.
PLEASE NOTE: Batiste will pitch right-handed one inning and left-handed in the 2nd inning in any games he pitches.

Choose my scorers: YES
Keep my Rotation: YES
DH in home park: NO
Ejections: No more than one a game.
Injuries: No more than one a game.

Qazox will use Pheonix Stadium, Qazox City for all of their home games.

THE WBC 15 NEWMANISTAN ROCKETS

World Baseball Classic 10, 12 Champions.
World Baseball Classic 7, 9, 11, 14 Runners-Up.
And we'll remind you of it throughout the tournament.

WBC 13 was a disappointment only really in that we allowed Taeshan to knock us out. It was a transitional Classic for us, and holding on to the #1 ranking that we held for three WBC’s was always going to be difficult, but the team rebounded and made yet another final in WBC 14.
Technical stuff:

Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No, as my lineup is posted here. Follow that!
Follow my Pitching Rotation: My starting pitcher for the next game will always be announced in my RP from the previous game.
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but only to the extent of saying so and so was injured. I’ll determine the severity
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes on a basis of no more then one more then you eject from your own team.
Godmod other events: No, except for weather. That you can.

Additional Information that is very important to me: Newmanistan does not prescribe to the modern day concept of pitch counts determining how long a starting pitcher is kept in for. In fact, pitch counts are not even kept track of outside of curiosity sake. Such count is not displayed on the scoreboard, so if you want to track it for your pitcher, you must do it manually. If Newmanistan has given up 3 runs or less, then the starting pitcher has gone all nine innings. No ifs, ands, or buts. This is true even if it would have been a save situation.
– Another Newmanistan trait is aggressive base stealing. Think back to the days of Vince Coleman and Ricky Henderson in their primes.

Head Coach- Christina Sanders (Southport)
Hitting Coach- Allyson Payne (North Charlotte)
Pitching Coach- Carrie Lynsder (Hampton)

Home Stadium for all Group Stage games will be the Tundra Falls Proving Grounds. The DH is NOT used.

Rotation: (pitchers bat with the same hand the pitch with)

1A) Sarah Brayton (LHP- Putnam Lake)- The 33-year old has now gone from bottom to top in the rotation, debuting as the 1E starter (we do not define starters as #1, #2, #3, etc, since they are all #1's at this level), and now taking over the top spot. And she deserves it, as she continues to get better as she gets older. Sarah’s has a wide variety of pitches, but her money pitch is a wicked curve with an awesome 12-6 dip.

1B)Courtney Ratigan (RHP- Olympia)- After an amazing Keisler Cup, Ratigan makes the rapid jump to the senior team when she was 21. Now at 23, and after a fantastic WBC 14, she’s climbed further up the rotation. She has been virtually unhittable with the Gladiators and loves to bring the heat.

1C)Jessica Brasfield (RHP- Pocono City)- Like Ratigan, who is a close personal friend, Jessica also impressively debuted at a young age in WBC 14. Now Jessica, at 22, who is a similar style pitcher looks to make more of a name for herself. She idolized Stacey Keisler, the greatest WBC pitcher of all time, and enjoys talking smack and making colorful comments in the media. She also isn’t shy about keeping any hitter from crowding the plate with her 95+ MPH fastball, if you catch the drift.

1D) Kaitlyn Ahearn (LHP- Loudon)- Nothing more should be read into Kaitlyn’s dropping from 1C to 1D in the rotation other then the progression of the two young phenoms ahead of her. The 25-year old has a good arsenal of breaking pitches, with her top pitches being a nasty slider and a curve.

1E) Brittany Castelli (RHP- Fairfield City)- Brittany appeared on the Keisler Cup U-16 roster as a 14-year old and pitched brilliantly. Now as a 20-year old, her professional career has taken off winning rookie of the year, and she is already named to the national team. Coach Sanders likes her attitude and dedication to pitching, and knows she will be a long term player on the national team, so might as well get her started now. Brittany’s isn’t overpowering (yet), but she’s getting there.

Bullpen: (Smaller then most because of the nation’s reliance on starters)

Cassie Herrick (LHP- South Tier)- Cassie is actually a starter with South Tier, but the 23-year old is more then happy to be debuting on the WBC team in this 15th edition as a reliever. Look for the southpaw, who brings the heat but also a nice cutter and slider, to act as the main long reliever in case a starter needs to be pulled early.

Michelle Harrison (RHP- Centralia)- Michelle is essentially the right handed version of Herrick, though the 28-year old is more experienced. She served as a starter in WBC’s 12 and 13, and starts with the Cougars as well. Like Cassie, when Michelle is used it will be for a 2-3 innings, at least.

Sara Schaefer (RHP- South Tier)- Sara is a versatile pitcher that could pitch in long relief, but with the make up of this bullpen, look for the 27-year old to be used in shorter situations, possibly the 7th inning or extra innings.

Set up/Short Relief: Erica Darby (LHP- Springfield)- Darby is a 32-year old makes her fifth WBC appearance. Initially she seemed like she would be an above average player but not a superstar as a starting pitcher, but once Springfield moved her to the bullpen, she was dominant.

Closer: Kristen Collins (RHP- Dover City)- Kristen, at 34, debuted in World Baseball Classic 11. She was a slow starter originally, but over the last three seasons she was emerged as the top closer in the country. Tosses a mid-90 fastball with a nasty cutter mixed in. This is expected to be her last WBC.

Batting Order: (throws/bats)-: For the first time in a while, we bring back an entire starting lineup.

1) Stacie Meadows- CF (R/S- South Tier)- Replacing Hall of Famer Brittany Wright was a tough assignment, but the 29-year old Seagull did her best to fill in. She is a speedster also but not quite as automatic as Brittany was when she takes off. Meadows has a career BA of .323 and is mainly a doubles/triples hitter.

2) Danielle Scott- LF (R/S- Southport)- Danielle hit in the cleanup spot on the U-21 Keisler Cup team, and now the 22- year old makes her second appearance. Despite hitting second, opposing pitchers will have to be cognizant of her ability to hit the long ball, even though Danielle is mainly a doubles/triples type hitter. And by the way, don’t test her strong arm in the outfield.

3) Meghan Butler- 3B (R/R- Dover City)- At 28, Meghan continues to get better every year, and this season the Mountaineer is expected to be a major contributor. Meghan get’s better year after year and is coming off a career high 47-HR season, where she also hit .336.

4) Natalie “The Better” Monroe- 1B (R/R- Hampton)- At 35, this could be the last WBC for Natalie. She is the prototypical power hitter, and is coming off a 53-HR season with the Bulldogs. Natalie is the only starting lineup batter who won a WBC championship also starting in WBC 10 and 12. She is the team captain. Her nickname is really just used by Newmanistan media to make sure everyone is aware that she is better then Tocrowkia’s Kevin Monroe.

5) Kristen Wheeler- SS (R/S- Pocono City)- At 25 years of age, Wheeler is amazing everyone, winning the Rookie of the Year award and immediately making herself the best candidate to replace Tara Cuyler at short, one of the several players that hung em up. Kristen figures to become a heart of the order player in her prime. She hits for power and average, and you can’t forget about her on the basepaths. She had a very impressive debut in WBC 13.

6) Courtney Weinman- RF (R/R- Tundra Falls)- The 26-year outfirlersimply hits the ball and can hit it hard. For the last two years, experts have waited for her production to tail off because she simply does not have the physical stature of a power hitter in any way. But Courtney has only gotten better, and now gets a shot on the national team. Also was very impressive in her debut in WBC 13.

7) Rachel Cuyler- 2B (L/L- Tundra Falls)- Speaking of Cuyler’s, Hall of Fame shortstop Tara Cuyler’s became the first second-generation player to make the senior team. She could be a little raw because of her age, but she did wonderfully in the Keisler Cup, so coach Sanders in optimistic that Rachel can and will make this adjustment. Now the 20-year old, in her second appearance looks to build on that success.

8) Jessica Sorenson- C (R/S- Centralia)- At 31, the makes her third international appearance. Sorenson is a great behind the plate catcher, but is also a leader on the field. She has a pretty good bat, averaging .303 over the last six seasons.

9) Pitcher
9) If DH: Stacie Gallant- 1B/3B (R/R- Loudon)- The 34-year old has been in this role since WBC13. When there is no DH she will be our top pinch-hitter. She is a pure contact hitter.

On the bench: (we have more people here then most only due to our small bullpen. It all evens out.)

Tara Rulison- C- Only to be used as a substitution behind the plate, never to pinch hit.
Courtney Stafford- MI (WBC rookie)
Erica Hilton- CI
Jillian Sanderson- OF
Corinne Gratton- OF (WBC rookie)
Julie Sexton- Utility (WBC rookie)

Choose my lineup: No
Follow my ptching rotation: Yes
Godmod scoring events: No
RP injuries to my players: No
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Within reason; ie, if you have a bench clearing brawl, there's bound to be some ejections.
Godmod other events: Stuff like charging the mound, bench clearing bawls is fine, player anxiety, but that's about it.
Style modifier: -1.5

DH in home park: No. Note that this is a change from years past when Sarzonia used the DH.
Home grounds: Fleetwood Park (capacity 57,600) in Woodstock, part of the new Dave Wilson Athletic Complex.

Manager Khalil Dennis
Bench Coach Geoff Yancey
First Base Coach Clem Barker
Third Base Coach Lyle Menifee
Hitting Coach Hank Everly
Pitching Coach Jim Wiesen

ROSTER

Starting Rotation
34 Brad Baxter (RHP): Nicksia Nighthawks Baxter led the Sarzonian major leagues in wins (17), innings pitched (172) and strikeouts (156).
12 John Morgan (RHP): Woodstock Mountaineers Led the Sarzonia League in victories with 15 and finished fourth in strikeouts with 106.
22 Charlie Palmer (LHP): Portland Fishermen Known for having the best changeup in all of Sarzonian baseball, he was named the first-ever Jim Palmer Award recipient for postseason MVP after leading the Fishermen to a Sarzonia Series crown.
27 Brian Edwards (RHP): Lexington Flight Despite the Flight's last place finish in the Incorporated League, Edwards was an 11 game winner (11-5, 2.67 ERA). He doesn't strike out many and relies on a sinking fastball to get ground ball outs.
40 Ken Sutcliffe (RHP): Portsmouth Pilots Sutcliffe is the veteran of the rotation, turning 41 at the end of the season. He's known for being a heady pitcher but he can still throw the ball past hitters when he has to.

Bullpen
32 Kenny Spencer (RHP): Saugerties Streakers Spencer is arguably the best setup man in the history of the sport in Sarzonia. He has only six saves in his career, but makes a living closing the door in the eighth inning.
29 Jay Ballard (LHP): Nicksia A specialist at getting lefthanded hitters out, Ballard made only one career start in secondary school. He threw a two-hit shutout in the state championship in that start.
33 Roger Tolliver (LHP): Avalon Aeros The lefthanded long reliever for the Aeros, he led the league with most innings pitched by a reliever (79) without making a start. His 38 appearances led the league among all relief pitchers.
17 Kerry Clark (RHP): Woodstock The leader among all of Sarzonian baseball with 29 saves, Clark has a devastating curveball and fastball. He's working on developing a change up.
39 Alvin Dryden (LHP): Rypien Rhinos Dryden is the lefty closer on the national team and will alternate with Clark depending on the opponent. Dryden led his league with 27 saves.
58 Alan Tisdale (switch-pitcher): Woodstock Lists himself as "semi-dextrous" because he's a power pitcher as a righthander, but a finesse pitcher as a lefty.

Position Players (starters in bold)
C 10 Fred Carlton: Grovesmont Gryphons Carlton is the best defensive catcher in Sarzonian baseball. Calls a great game, threw out 44 percent of opposing baserunners. His problem: He hit .227 with only two home runs.
1B 36 Skip Hale: Woodstock Steps in to play first base in favour of the retired Everly, who joins the Stars as hitting coach. He is expected to have some growing pains in the position.
2B 8 Dewey Griffin: Avalon The sparkplug for the Aeros, Griffin led both major leagues with 44 stolen bases and nine bunt hits. He was tied for second in the league in sacrifice hits (bunts or flies).
SS 2 Chris Spontanelli: Townshend Tigers: One of the many shortstops in the Cal Ripken mold, Spontanelli led his team with 17 homers and 81 RBI. At 6'5", he's the tallest starting shortstop in Sarzonia.
3B 9 Kate Schmidt: Bristol Bears: The only female to earn a starting spot on the national team, she hit .309 to lead her team and smacked 11 home runs.
LF 19 Tyrell Gordon: Portland Set a record for most outfield assists in college or high school baseball with 133. Had only two outfield assists this season when major league teams decided not to risk running on him.
CF 23 Drew Bradley: Avalon A speedster, Bradley is known for his graceful play in center and led his league in outfield assists with nine.
RF 24 Mark Dwight: Nicksia Not much with speed or a throwing arm, but Dwight specialises in being at the right place at the right time. He led the league with a .361 batting average.

Reserves
OF 11 Micah West Grovesmont Not the fleetest of foot, but has a rocket for a throwing arm and has excellent anticipation.
OF 7 Tyler Hunter Bristol: Can play either corner outfielder position, but his throwing arm is arguably the worst in the league. Is better known for his bat.
C 13 Mario Salvidotti Avalon: Improving as a receiver, Salvidotti led his team with 21 home runs and 89 RBI.
IF 3 Russ Fraley Bristol Handled his demotion to reserve behind Schmidt with surprising grace and honed his skills as a shortstop so he could play short, third or first. He also is learning how to play second.
IF 5 Bryan Carroll Portland Extremely valuable asset to his team, he can play any position in the infield. Could serve as the emergency catcher if necessary.

Tarrentum Falcons

The Tarrentum Sports Committee, alongside the Allied States Major League and ASML Players Corporation, announce the national team roster, starting lineups and pertinent information for the Tarrentum Falcons World Baseball Classic debut. The Supreme President Cesare Italiana personally announced all members of the national team in a news conference earlier this week.

All home games will be played in beautiful Imperium Stadium in Napoliroma, Tarrentum, Allied States of Tarrentum. Imperium Stadium has a capacity of 80,000 mostly outfield seating.
Image Image

*Position: First and Last Name, Age, B/T (Uni #)
Coaches
Manager: Tiberius Wavi, 47 (56) – Wavi has successfully managed the Napoliroma Legion to the Allied States Championships two out of the past three years. His team is constantly in the pennant race.
Bench Coach: Vincent Saloni, 45 (29) – Saloni has been the manager for the Krozuy Falcons for 5 years and has helped them rise from mid-level team to one of the best in the Allied States Major League.
First Base Coach: Ruboni Kilia, 50 (10) – Kilia has been in the First Base Coaches Box for 20 years holding the position with a variety of ASML and ASMiL (Allied States Minor League) teams. He has coached for Napoliroma for the past five years. Kilia also serves as the outfield instructor for the Legion.
Third Base Coach: Galahad Asanti, 67 (89) – Asanti has seen many long years on the diamond. He was a star infielder in the Allied States Major League forty years ago. He still holds the record for most homeruns by a second baseman with 500. Asanti has coached with the Riordi Cannons for 25 years where he serves as their Bench Coach.

*Position: First and Last Name, Age, B/T (Uni #)
Pitchers
SP 1: Brodi Jacobo, 27, L/L (34) – Jacobo has anchored the pitching staff for the Napoliroma Legion to two AS Championships. He has a devastating knucklecurve and one of the most commanding changeup pitches in the majors. He has carried a sub-3.50 ERA since his emergence in the majors four years ago.
SP 2: Gaele DeRosi, 32, R/R (21) – DeRosi has been firing his fastball past batters for the Krozuy Falcons for 7 years and currently is the highest paid player in the ASML. He has lost a little bit of control on his pitches since turning 30 but is still able to strikeout most batters. He has over 115 Ks the past three years.
SP 3: Julianna Italiana Bianconi, 24, S/R (18) – The beloved niece of Supreme President Cesare Italiana. Julianna broke the gender barrier in ASML only four years ago not through political force but through shear skill and determination. She easily handles batters with her skill with curveballs, changeups and sliders. Italiana plays for the Napoliroma Legion.
SP 4: Marcus Bianconi, 30, L/L (31) – Bianconi has been the number one pitcher for the Riordi Cannons the past two years and has accumulated an impressive 42 wins over that two year span. Unfortunately, he is the only good pitcher on the Cannons roster. He has made the All-Star roster the past six years. Aside from baseball he is most widely know as Julianna Italiana’s husband.
SP 5: Michael Grastiona, 34, R/R (35) – Grastiona has pitched for ten different clubs during his seven years in the ASML, he is currently with the Lower Marientian Rams. His journeyman career is due mostly to Grastiona’s temper, which is exacerbated by his off- (and one time on-) field drinking. Grastiona has recently hired an anger management coach to help him. His anger has led Grastiona to hold the record for most consecutive games ejected. However, his ERA over the past four years has remained below 4.00.
Long Reliever: Romeo Vasparian, 22, R/R (74) – Vasparian was recently called up to the majors to play for the Garatia Warhounds and helped the Hounds make their first playoffs in twenty years. He owns a 10-5 record with a 3.40 ERA.
Mid Reliever: Pollani Dazzera, 27, R/R (3) – Dazzera has pitched in relief for the Legion for five years and has frustrated hitters with his cut fastball.
Mid Reliever: Liona Marrada, 25, L/L (16) – Marrada worked her way through the minor leagues alongside Julianna Italiana and became a fierce pitcher in her own right. Marrada has pitched for the Krozuy Falcons this past year and ended the season with a 2.01 ERA.
Mid Reliever: Fironte Sareb, 18, R/L (77) – Sareb was the number 1 prospect for the ASML and was drafted last year by the Lower Marientian Rams. He sets a quick pace on the mound with his cut fastball and fastball pitches.
Setup: Ederi Sallamo, 30, R/R (40) – Sallamo has been the setup man for Napoliroma during their two AS Championships. He put up a .99 ERA last year.
Closer: Francisco Azzri, 38, R/R (99) – Azzri has led the league in Saves the past four years and plays for the Krozuy Falcons.

*First and Last Name, Age, B/T (Uni #)
Catchers
Valerio Utteroni, 32, S/R (52) – Utteroni has been behind the plate for the Napoliroma Legion for five years. He has a career batting average of .352 and homered 35 times last year.
Antoni Favella, 24, L/L (87) – Favella recently became an ASML star for picking off 50 consecutive stealing attempts against him. He has been a boon to the Garatia Warhounds since being promoted to the majors two years ago. His career batting average is .298.

*First and Last Name, Age, B/T (Uni #)
Infielders
Nicolai Rioi, 30, R/R (23) – Rioi plays first base for the Lower Merientain Rams and is an expert at the plate normally bringing pitchers to a full count when he is at bat. He has the most career walks of active players and analysts expect him to end his career with the ASML record for walks. Career BA .252
Colossi Trempani, 28, R/R (14) – Trempani plays third base for the Napoliroma Legion and is a great fielder winning the Platnium Glove award for three consecutive years as the ASML’s leading fielder. He has a career fielding percentage of .979 and a career batting average of .350
Trego Saronna, 33, L/L (66) – Saronna spent four years of his prime serving in the Tarrentum Armed Forces and is widely known as a clean cut, determined player for the Krozuy Falcons at second base. Saronna is a great field tactician but is prone to some errors occasionally. He leads the league in doubles this year. Career BA .278
Ferdini Zappataro, 25, R/R (32) – Zappataro (Zappa) has played shortstop for the Garatia Warhounds the past three years and has been the subject of many highlight reels. He led the majors in triples and stolen bases last year (20 and 85 respectively). Career BA .303
Xavier Gradoni, 29, S/R (20) – Gradoni plays third and first base for the Riori Cannons. He is a strong batter who registered a hit in 40 consecutive games last year. Career BA .340
Dessea Vallena, 22, R/R (15) – Vallena was the first woman to start as a position player in the ASML. Vallena is quick in either middle infield position and was the Husoni Bishops’ only representative at the All-Star game last year, which was also her rookie season. Career BA .280, Career SB 70

*First and Last Name, Age, B/T (Uni #)
Outfielders
Jax Ianello, 30, R/R (61) – Ianello plays left field for the Napoliroma Legion and has seen his stock rise as a great fielder and hitter during his 6 years in the majors. Career BA .278 (.340 the past two years), Career fielding percentage .968
Rian Fesserallia, 29, R/R (28) – Fesserallia has been a great long ball hitter for the Garatia Warhounds but is prone to hitting droughts at the plate. Career BA .320
Cesare Puloni, 33, R/R (10) – Puloni has played numerous outfield positions during his career, most recently right field for the Krozuy Falcons. Puloni has a knack for unbelievable defensive plays and is a solid .300 hitter for his career.
Norian Ionian, 35, L/L (59) – Ionian is nearing retirement but has still managed to put up impressive numbers at the plate. His 32 homeruns last year put him among the league leaders. His age is showing in his fielding ability however as he has lost about a step or two from his prime. Career BA .304

Godmod other events: No, except for weather.

Other factoids: The Allied States Major League does not have a DH for any team. All games played in Imperium Stadium will not have a DH in the lineup. If a game is decided by one or two runs either way then my starting pitcher was taken out and a reliever was put in. This means that for a 3-2 Tarrentum victory, either my Setup or Closer got the save.

THE ROCKET REPORT

READY TO PLAY BALL?

Tundra Falls- It’s time to take it to the baseball diamond once again as the 15th edition of the World Baseball Classic is set to get underway. Once again, the championship will be decided on One Big Island, for the 4th time in 5 tries. But for the first time, it will be in The Babbage Islands. That nation has hosted several tournaments, and their hosting of this one will further prove the point that One Big Island is unquestionably the best region in the world for baseball. Co-hosting World Cup 49 with us and World Bowl 9 are the biggest events so far held in the nation, in our opinion. Cassadaigua will look to repeat as champion, but defending champions have not, historically fared well in their title defense. Certainly, the Rockets are a top contender, and should probably be seen as the favorite. Tocrowkia, Secristan, Zwangzug, and Sarzonia will contend. Possibly Taeshan, Dancougar, and Quintessence of Dust as well. Maybe even a once relevant in baseball nation such as Milchama will have a rebirth. Perhaps Qazox will turn it around. Well, those last two didn’t have the group draw do them any favors. Because they are paired with us.

Other then Qazox and Milchama, Newmanistan will be faced with Virabia, who was terrible in WBC 14, and a couple of debutants known as Emothica and Verdriet. Verdriet is a mid-sized nation in the Lovers of Heavy Metal region. So at least we can say one very positive thing about them: they have excellent musical tastes. That will probably be the nicest thing we say about them all tournament. 3B Meghan Butler is excited about that eventual trip saying, “After the game we’re just going to have to hit the clubs because we know they will absolutely rock hardcore!” Unfortunately, their ability to party there too much will be hampered by the fact that the only nation that should probably present some competition, Qazox, follows on the schedule. More on them in a bit. The other first-time nation is from the region of Hot Topic. That makes us wondered who the heck names regions these days? They are the only nation in the region, so the topic is more cold then hot. Virabia has a rugby title to their credit. Unfortunately for them, we’re using bats, and the last time they used them, they did not look good. Milchama had some glory days in the past. But this ain’t World Baseball Classic 5 anymore, sorry. Then there’s Qazox. According to QSPN (by the way we hear QSPN is looking for a new VP of satellite operations), the group is brutal because of past histories. QSPN apparently has not come to the fact that their baseball team isn’t what they were before. They have been bypassed by many nations, and they need to rectify that. Milchama fits in that category as well. It's worth noting that according to QSPN, Qazox will be "So the team will attempt to bring back the single-2 stolen bases and a sac-bunt/fly= 1 run type of team." In other words, they have been paying attention to what has worked with the Rockets and they are going to try an copy our success by playing our way. The bad news for all of these nations is that they are in a group with Newmanistan. And that’s a Newmanistan team that is very, very hungry.

Unfortunately for them, this is a Rockets team that looks to be in very good shape. There was a lot of roster turnover between World Baseball Classic 12 and 13 (as many players from the Rockets WBC team, the greatest WBC champion of all time, retired), and that showed with the performance in edition 13. However, the team quickly reasserted themselves by making the final against Cassadaigua on their home turf in their last outing, and now many of these people not only return, but they are in the prime of their careers. The youngsters from the last event, such as Jessica Brasfield and Courtney Ratigan have more experience now, leading us to have every reason to believe that this team should have a great run. Two-time WBC Championship winning manager Christina Sanders even told us that, “This is the best team we have had since we won the last championship. We can do everything you need to win a baseball game, and we are hungry after losing the last one. Cassadaigua is the top seed, and we know how they would like to win a title on Babbage soil, but we can match them. Qazox isn’t a pushover, I respect them, but I do think we can beat them and anyone else if we play our game.” Sanders announced also that she will mix up the rotation at halfway so, “pitchers can pitch against a different opponent both times. Allowing one nation to play against the same pitcher in each game allows them to use information from the first game in the second, and I will not let them do that.” A couple of off-days within the group stage schedule allows Sanders to play around with the rotation a little more then she would have been able to in previous WBC’s.

All of Newmanistan’s home games will take place at the Tundra Falls Proving Grounds. The schedule is as follows:

(Starting pitcher for game in parenthesis)
MD1: @ Virabia (Brayton)
MD2: @ Milchama (Ratigan)
MD3: vs Emothica (Brasfield)
MD4: @ Verdriet (Ahearn)
MD5: vs Qazox (Brayton)
MD6: vs Virabia (Castelli)
MD7: vs Milchama (Brasfield)
MD8: @ Emothica (Ahearn)
MD9: vs Verdriet (Ratigan)
MD10: @ Qazox (Castelli)

The opening day starter for the Barnettsville Blue Jays was announced today with much controversy, and the media-assumed starter unexpectedly quit the team. Jason Strong, assumed by all including NBL Tonight's baseball experts to open WBC 15, announced his intention to not participate for the Jays during the press conference. It was announced, as a one-game allowance, that Garry Barnett, Jr. will pitch on President Barnett's birthday in the Classic's opening game against Zwangzug. the remainder of the roster will be released later.

Tarrentum Falcons Sporting News

The Tarrentum Falcons are holding their last practice in Napoliroma today before traveling to Altarus to begin their first game of the World Baseball Classic 15 against Kalasion. The prospects for the Falcons are a vast unknown as this is the country's first WBC tournament. However, by the looks of the teams on the field it should be a good one.

Mr. and Mrs. Bianconi seem to be taking their newfound status as teammates in stride. The old adage of "leave the spouse out of the workplace" is thrown out the window with these two pitchers. They confess that their naturally competitive sides will lead them to give their all during their games. "Just as long as she doesn't nag me about not getting my fastball up to speed." Marcus Bianconi said about his wife, the beloved Julianna Italiana Bianconi. The other female participants on the national team, Liona Marrada and Dessea Vallena have taken their chance to represent the ol' Orange and Blue as a great honor. They were personally invited to the Supreme President's residence to enjoy [censored by Tarrentum National Press Committee]. Both women said that their night at the National Palace was unforgettable and something that they will tell their children about.

Zappa has been looking magnificent in his role as "Speed Demon" of the Falcons. We recently caught up to him during stretching exercises. Zappa was extremely confident that his ability to run like the wind will help lead the Falcons to a respectable showing. "It's all about how you get into your opponents mind. If I can steal second and third after I get on base, just imagine what the opposing pitcher is thinking when I get on base next time."

Norian Ionian, one of the oldest players on the roster, is hesitant to jump to any conclusions about the Falcons chances. "Look, this will be a great time for us and for our country. But we need to realize that we are currently imbroiled in a [censored by Tarrentum National Press Committee] with Meddicia and this might or might not be a good distraction for our fellow citizens. I, for one, will be playing for all of our Armed Forces this WBC."

In truth the Supreme President has made it known that, depending on the outcome, all participants on the national team may receive military commissions (and the pension benefits) after this WBC. The Supreme President has dusted off old Tarrentum Valley Imperium laws that allow superior athletes to receive commissions and his speciality law quickly passed through the legislative process.

We'll be publishing our next story from Kalasion.

Godmod other events: Yes as long as no one dies or is seriously hurt.

Well, we are the defending champions, but as we mentioned many times during the last event, it was the last go-around for many of the players, so even though we are defending a championship, we have a lot of new faces. Note that every WBC rookie appeared in some capacity in the Keisler Cup.

Here is our lineup with the players average numbers per season over the course of their career. All players are switch hitters, you don’t get to this level in Cassadaigua without having that ability.

The Numbers Round
Posted by PictionaryCorner

Hello, and welcome to a new section of TalkBaseball, called The Numbers Round. Each week, we look at some fun facts about domestic and international baseball.

5

This is, by far, the highest Quintessence of Dust has ever been ranked in the World Baseball Classic. It is one of highest rankings any of our national teams have received in any sport, beaten only by rugby union and handball. Consider our ~70 ranking in world football (which can only plummet after World Cup 51, in which we are not taking part) or our ~30 ranking in ice hockey, supposedly our leading national sport.

Being ranked #5 has some obvious disadvantages. We can no longer try to portray every win as a stirring upset victory for the noble underdogs. Typically, our players have reacted to being expected to win by, um, not doing so, so that's one obstacle. But in being ranked #5 and not #4, we are also not seeded to reach the semifinals - meaning repeating WBC14's successes will still be challenging.

2

Number of teams employing designated hitters.

1

Number of teams threatening to saw their legs off rather than employ designated hitters.

41

Uniform number from aforementioned knifewielding purists' roster with the most indisputably awesome name. Last night my daughter suggested a certain fondness for Gackbang to my husband, and now he wants to send her to reform school. I do not think it means what he thinks it means.

4

Number of strikeouts Yaforite prospect Jahraan Ladakh had in 55 at bats against left handed pitchers while playing for the New Cleethorpes Anti-Catholics in our Western League. Also the number of home runs he hit against left handed pitchers.

0

Number of Qazoxian group stage predictions we expect to be realized.

187

Courtney Lombardi threw 187 pitches in Game #2 of the WBC14 semifinal series against Quintessence of Dust, 41 of them to Momoko Koumura. During the course of the series, there was some dialogue between this website and The Rocket Report over criticisms of Newmanistan's batting lineup choices: we felt it was unduly wasteful to play good base runners directly ahead of genuine extra base hits - why try to steal second if you can be driven in from first?

Of course, they had the best reply: they beat us.

1

Experimental rotation size being employed by the Toiletdonian...we're not sure of their nickname, but we like Flushers.

6

Number of consecutive World Baseball Classics in which Ken Sutcliffe has been listed as "turning 41 at the end of the season". Um, denial, much?

26

Number of saves recorded by Mazio Mizokuchi in the recently completed Season 3 of Minimal League Baseball.

Like, none

Number of saves recorded by the person who finished second to him.

50

Number of consecutive successful pickoffs by Antoni Favella, reserve catcher for Tarrentum, one of the most exciting new faces on the world baseball stage. Coincidentally, also the number of bases we predict Johnny Stryker will steal against Favella in a single game at bat if the two end up playing against one another.

0

Socki Lewis hit no home runs during WBC14. You read that right.

4

Number of consecutive seasons Momoko Koumura has had at least 200 hits, 30 doubles, 30 home runs, 100 RBI, 100 runs scored and 30 stolen bases since entering the Free Austin Baseball League. Such astronomical totals are, of course, meaningless in the context of our 72 game season, but they're still nice to look at. Much like cats.

17

Julie Poulin of Cassadaigua is - thus far at least - the youngest player to make a WBC15 roster. She beats out teammates Rachel Friedman and Meaghan Billington, and Tarrentum's Fironte Sareb, all of whom are legal. (Though clearly, I'm not suggesting - I would pay handsomely, of course - please, officer, I can explain...)

TalkBaseball.qd Competition!
In collaboration with the Department of Sport and Cheesy Jews

The Rockets roar to victory. The Falcons swoop majestically. The Knights stand resplendent. The Wolves howl (mostly at the suggestion that the designated hitter has some merit, but also for shits and giggles). The Bumblebees buzz. The Zebras gallop. The Firebugs set the world aglow. The Quintessence of Dust national baseball team...sort of...does stuff.

In celebration of having lasted for five successive editions of the World Baseball Classic - which, amazingly, makes this Quintessence of Dust's longest unbroken participation in any international sporting event - the Department of Sport has decided to commission a nickname for our national baseball team. Cheesy Jews have decided to donate a year's supply of Salt & Vinegar Samaritan flavour crisps to the lucky winner who suggests the best name for our national team.

Your suggestion should include a brief suggestion of why you think the name is a suitable choice for the team, an explanation of how you came up with the idea, and an affidavit waiving your rights to sue should actually eating Cheesy Jews snack products for an entire year cause impotence, blindness, and irreparable organ damage.

Here are a couple our site managers came up with!

MetaNarrativesFTL: I think we should be called Brontosauruses. Unlike the Raptors, these were peaceful, friendly creatures, and they would emphasise our diplomatic, pacifistic foreign policy. After all, we became involved in international sport to help promote the Quodite global image. I thought of the idea while visiting the Museum of Natural History in New Cleethorpes, and pondering how the only museums in Nowy Orpington are probably about industrial steam processes.

ruth_babe:
team name suggestion - The Grey Seals
why it works - grey is our national colour, seals are grey, we have lots of seals in quintessence of dust
how i thought of it - clubbing seal to death with baseball bat

At Home 2we don't use the DH.

When A DH is needed we will use Axelton or Paris depending on who isn't in the field.

Important things to know: We play a high percentage game. Lots of hits, but most of them are singles, we rarely steal and our Starters usually last 7-8 and sometimes (Especially in Tex Williams' case) the full 9.

Choose my lineup: Nope
Follow my Pitching Rotation: Yes
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: TG me first.
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes

Manager: Paul Rudolf
[ The manager of the Nordics baseball team since it's founding. Rudolf has lead his squad to eight play-off berths, four division titles, four final four appearances, and of course, the big one, winning a WBC title in WBC 11. Often thought of as an 'old school' type of manager, one who preaches good baserunning, defense and manufactured runs. Though he is known to keep his starting pitching on a tight leash, if he's not regarded as one of the best managers in the world at this point, what's wrong with you guys?]
Bench Coach: Alex Cremer
1st Base coach: Albin Linder
3rd Base coach: Katrine Alberts
Pitching coach: Johann Hilgers
Hitting coach: Kathe Lohmeyer

Batting Order:
B - Kitten Dyfuse (R/R) #2
[ 28 years old, Kitten has always put up good five-tool numbers with a career .298 BA, an average of 25 HRs per season, and at least thirty stolen bags. She has a solid glove on the hot corner, but has a tendency for base-running goofs here and there.]
LF - Adam Marksworth (R/S) #14
[ Taking over for Willhelm Dynrus is Adam Markworth. Seeing as Dynrus sat out the entirety of the last Classic, the top brass have decided to start Marksworth to be on the safe side. One of the best contact hitters around, he's posted a career .339 batting average. However, he has never hit more than 17 longballs in a single season and is not a power threat. Good baserunning, making contact, and productive outs are his thing. ]
1B - Johnny Stryker (L/L) #5
[Still one of the teams youngest players at only 27 years old, Stryker is an amazing five-tool player. He hits for average. He hits for power. His speed is positively explosive on the basepaths, and he's a defensive wizard to cap it all off. He also possess many intangibles that are only boosted given his superstar status. He is a spark-plug for his team both on and off the field, thus giving him the name of "The Catalyst.". This off-season saw a 'changing of the guard' and Stryker has assumed the title of team captain.]
CF - Dmitri Rykov (R/R) #17
[ One of the more overlooked players on the Nordics roster, though we can't imagine why. Rykov is also a five-tool super-star talent, frequently posting stats that look something like this: 332/42 HR/120 RBIs through his five big league seasons. Known for his ability to come through in the clutch, he has the nick name "Mr. Clutch." Has good speed and a dead eye and a terrific arm in the outfield. ]
C - Kevin Monroe (R/L) #6
[ A well-rounded catcher with good defensive and terrific offensive abilities. He was elected to the WBC team after posting a .310/31 HR/112 RBI season in rookie year to replace the now retired Hoyt Klaus. Due to the fact he is only 26 years old, the wear and tear his position usually inflicts hasn't caught up with him and he has good, but not blinding speed on the basepaths.]
SS - Jill Haviland (R/R) #7
[ A rarity among infielders, Jill Haviland has an excellent power stroke. She is known for her majestic, 425+ ft homeruns that come easily to her, giving her the tongue-in-cheek nickname "Princess of Pounders" Everything works for her, and her swing is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Tocrowkian baseball. She is much more than just a slugger though, and can pretty much get every type of hit from line drivers to tape measure jacks. She can also protect her strike zone fairly well. On top of that, she is a media darling with a great personality, and is regarded as the most attractive female player on the team. Voluntary resigned her position of team captain to Stryker in the off-season. ]
2B - Michael Hammer (Switch/Right) #24
[ The MVP of the 1st Keisler cup, Hammer went on to be drafted by the Nouva Yourk Nightmares, and after a brief stint in the minors has gone on to become a ROY candidate. A news article describes him thusly: "He has the potential to be the greatest offensive second baseman in the history of the Reich. He treats opposing pitchers like you or I would treat a thanksgiving turkey, carving into them mercilessly. He can hit line drives into the gap, lift the ball into the seats, and slap the ball between the infielders and the outfielders. He is not a high-ball nor a low-ball hitter. He is an any-ball hitter. Through this all though, he maintains a modest and empathetic personality. He frequently hangs his head, refusing to make eye contact with the pitcher after he hits a homerun, almost as if he is embarrassed. His parents should have probably named him "Clark" and he could undoubtedly rock a red cape and tights with the letter "M" super-imposed on the chest just as well as he does a cap and cleats. He is also a solid player on D, but is prone to make aggressive plays, such as going for the lead runner or the one breaking for the plate than the sure out. But he is an athlete and can make those diving stops and those jumping throws as good as anyone else. ]
RF - Kathrin Jordan (L/S) #22
[ 26 year old Kathrin Jordan will be in right. She is essentially another lead-off hitter with great speed and good contact. She also has good power for a girl her size, and she is always a threat to steal on the basepaths. In fact, she had 57 SB's in her ROY season. Also a strong arm in the outfield. ]
-Pitchers Spot-

Pitchers:
SP - Tommy Thunder (Righty) #27
[ The ace of the Nordics staff for the past several classics. Classic power pitcher, with a 93-98 MPH fastball, 12-6 Curve, cut fastball and circle change making up his arsenal. Attacks the strike zone, especially the corners, with his fastball and uses his other pitches for outs. And having player 3rd base during high school and half of his college career, he is no slouch at the plate, either, and can hit balls and hit them deep. ]
SP - Alexandria Dassow (Righty) #12
[ If you are expecting the gross arsenal of pitches of Sofie Behm, or the over-whelming power of Tommy Thunder you will be disappointed. Dassow is however a tremendous finesse pitcher, location and quality strikes her specialty. She has command of only three pitches, but each is money. A 92+ MPH fastball, a slider, and a circle change. ]
SP - Sofie Behm (Lefty) #20
[ Sofie is a making her fourth WBC appearance and is only 25 years old to boot. She has quite the arsenal consisting of a 93-98 MPH fastball, a cutter, a slider, a curveball, and a splitter.]
SP - Matthew Shaporio (Righty) #19
[ A pitcher with excellent control of four pitches: A 92-97 MPH fastball, an odd screwball, a deceptive splitter and a great change up. Has an odd wind-up and delivery style, which of course deceives hitters. Count on him to rack up a lot of Ks on a lineup when he's grooving. Relegated as the number four starter after his horrid performance in the last edition of the classic. ]
SP - Sven Grewe (Left/Left) #28
[ The young southpaw, and a star pitcher of the Keisler Cup championship run. She, like Hammer has gone on to become a star in the big leagues. She has an overpowering 98 MPH fastball, a nasty slider, a nice cutter and one of the best circle-changeups you'll see. She hits her spots but has the tendency to tilt rather badly when calls go against her. If and when that happens, she becomes extremely volatile and wild. She has even been known to break out in tears and nervous break downs on the mound. ]

Bullpen
MR - Jeanna Glaus (Lefty)
[ A sink baller by nature, Jeanna also has a 86-92 MPH fastball, curve ball and a slider to make use of. Of course her sinker is her main pitch however, which results in a lot of ground outs. Relegated to the bullpen because age is finally catching up to her.]
MR - Mercedes Gaunt (Righty)
[ After the retirement of Jaycen Hester, Mercedes Gaunt took his place in the pen. Like Hester, Gaunt is a former starter turned reliever. She is a Finesse pitcher who relies on breaking pitches and off-speed pitches to win games. Throws quality strikes, and has a low walk percentage to show for it. However, her fastball, which tops out at a maximum of 86 MPH is sort of easy to hit, but due to all the off-speed stuff she mix's in, it makes up for it.]
MR - Julius Kalden (Righty)
[ If the Nordics ever run into a situation where the need some serious innings to be eaten up, this is the man. 22 Years old, Julius has a good 92 MPH fastball, a 12-6 curve, a cutter and a splitter to make up his arsenal. ]
MR - Erma Lorenz (Lefty)
[ A knuckle-baller with a lively 92 MPH cut fastball and a nasty slurve to back up the knuckle ball. She is good for up to three innings of effective relief if the Nordics need her to do so. ]
LHS - Annaliese Geyr (Lefty)
[ Left-handed specialist used against tough lefties. A cutter, slider, splitter and circle change make up her arsenal. ]
SU - Amber Taven (Righty)
[ Amber Tavern, an impressive young woman that performs well under pressure, has an arsenal of pitches to work with. A 95 MPH Fastball, a two-seam Fastball which has good movement and has a good late break, and is extremely effective against lefties. An excellent slider, which she often uses for outs against righties, an effective curve which breaks down and away, and finally a great change up. Amber is extremely emotional, and some would say cocky, and often performs elongated celebrations after retiring the side. ((OOC: Seriously. Imagine her doing something like Jonathan Papelbon and K-Rod after every out she records.)) ]
CL - Jamie Von Tipker (Righty)
[ A classic closer. Unlike her set-up counter-part, Jamie is a calm and modest player, but she is extremely effective. She has command of a cut-fastball, which she throws with great effectiveness and oddly enough causes alot of broken bats. She also has a good 12-6 Curve, circle change and finally a sinker. ]

Bench:
Michel Keitel (Catcher, 1st base, 3rd base) (R/R) #9
[ A young catcher, used more often than not to give Monroe a break for a game or two. He can call a good came, but has iffy skill when it comes to throwing runners out. Can hit for power, but not for average and is vulnerable to striking out. He can also play the corner infield positions ]
Willhem Dynrus (Leftfielder, Left/Left) #13
[ Returning after a one-Classic absence, Dynrus is expected to sit on the bench for the first couple of games. Though the injury he suffered a year ago that robbed him of the chance to play in the Classic has made him not quite the speed-demon of years gone by, he still sports a valuable bat and a canon of an arm.]
Heinz Görtz (Utility Outfielder) (L/L) #11
[ Can play either right or left field. He's a solid defensive player, but he can really struggle at the plate at times. When he does make contact however, he can hit the ball a long way. ]
Carmen Rein (Utility Outfielder) (L/L) #29
[ A young center fielder, Carmen is known for her athletic and impressive plays in the outfield and her cannon of an arm, having two gold-glove awards in her short career. Not a lot of power, but is pretty fast, making her a good pinch runner too. ]
2B - Domino Mazdrick (R/S) #35
[ Relegated to the bench after an injury prone season, Mazdrick probably won't see a light of playing time with a bad ankle and back coming into the classic. Still, she can be considered a dangerous pinch hitter when coming into the game. ]

The relief on the face of Sarzonian national team manager Khalil Dennis's face was palpable. In fact, Dennis was almost radiant as he approached the podium for the opening press conference prior to Sarzonia's participation in the 15th World Baseball Classic.

"We're finally doing away with the designated hitter," Dennis said. "It's been something I've wanted us to do since I came here."

It was something the Stars couldn't do as long as both Hank Everly and Skip Hale swung big bats. Former manager Jim Paulsen did everything in his power to keep Hale in the line up with Everly, his big bopper.

Now that Everly was serving as hitting coach, Hale was entrenched as the new starting first baseman. That would mean Sarzonia would be a little bit less potent offensively, but Dennis still had one curveball the greatest pitcher in Delaclav history could "throw" the media. All the pitchers all were expected to take batting practice with the team.

"I know some of the guys look a little funny with bats in their hands," Dennis said. "We're working on that."

With the schedule giving teams two off days in the first five days, the Stars will shuffle their starting rotation. Brad Badger, John Morgan and Charlie Palmer will all start the first three matches, then Morgan will start the fourth. It allows the team to have Morgan and Badger pitch against Sarzonia's two highest ranked opponents in Group A.

"We're going to have Morgan pitch against Bluth Corporation," said catcher Fred Carlton. "Then Badger's going to pitch against Secristan."

Third baseman Kate Schmidt said the team would be "excited as hell" to open the new Fleetwood Park against Bluth Corporation after spending the past few World Baseball Classics at Walter Cronkite Memorial Park in suburban Clyburn, previously known as Mountaineer Park.

"We're going to be glad to not play in the mountains in that high altitude," Schmidt said. "Fleetwood Park is going to be beautiful."

THE ROCKET REPORT

STATE OF THE ROCKETS

Tundra Falls- We are yet another day closer to the beginning of World Baseball Classic 15. I’m Shannon Spencer and I am honored to be the traveling reporter for the Rocket Report as Newmanistan seeks to win their third championship, which would tie them with Qazox, even though the latter has not won a title since I was in 7th grade. Ah yes, those were fun times at the ol’ Pine Creek Middle School about 35 miles outside of Centralia. They beat Newmanistan in that championship but if you watched that series, even as a 13-year old you had a feeling that one old power had peaked and a new power was climbing up the charts. Qazox has dropped in the rankings so much now, that they aren’t even a “pot 1" team anymore. And don’t get me started on Milchama, please. I remember watching that Classic, which was the ninth, as a young teenager and seeing head coach Christina Sanders leading the team. There has been no other coach of the Rockets, and when you consider what she has accomplished, is there anyone else out there that has done more? It makes me absolutely honored to have this sit down interview with Christina for the traditional “State of the Rockets” pre-tournament coaching interview.

SS: Good morning, Christina. It is an honor to be here with you and a pleasure to meet you.

CS: Thank you Shannon. Pleasure to meet you as well.

SS: You allowed previous reporter Meghan Traynor to call you Chrissy, but no one else really. May I have the same privilege?

CS: Sure, that bit about you watching me coach when you were in seventh grade means a lot. It also means I am getting older, doesn’t it?

SS: It does, but you are also getting wiser. You have led Newmanistan to six finals in the eight tournaments you have participated in. Which was the most special?

CS: The championships were great. But the most special was World Baseball Classic 7 when Newmanistan participated as a new nation and had zero ranking points. People predicted us to win maybe two games if we were lucky in the group stage and then not make it to the playoffs. The way we rallied around that as a team, and played hard every game, to not only make it to the playoffs, but to advance all the way to the championship series was awesome. We worked hard (i.e. RP’d a ton), and everything paid off.

SS: It seems like we always mention that at the start of every Classic.

CS: We do, because there are many new nations in this one as well. We want them to know that they can have success, but they have to work for it, and work their asses off for it. That was also the debut classic for Tocrowkia and Secristan; surely one of the best crops of new nations ever. That was a long time ago, but maybe one of these first timers can go on a similar run.

SS: That was special. So what about this years team? Obviously, the Rockets are a favorite and one of the main teams to beat. Can they live up to it?

CS: We have a great team, and they have the ability to win the title. If they don’t, it won’t be because of what they didn’t do, but because of what someone else did, such as Cassadaigua last Classic.

SS: I notice you plan on working the rotation a bit to where the same pitcher won’t pitch against the same opponent two times.

CS: The schedule allows for that. We’ve been given a couple extra off days, which are universal off days for everyone, to where I can. Other times I couldn’t do that. And I must say, I love the schedule. It’s not play, then hop in an airplane, every day. You have some chances to relax, and that’s always good.

SS: Courtney Lombardi is the biggest name the retired after the last Classic. You move Sarah Brayton up. This will probably be Sarah’s last Classic, but after that it looks like with the ages of the pitchers, there could be some considerable rotation stability from WBC 16 through 19 or 20.

CS: The toughest transition was between (Classics) 12 and 13. Since then, we may have had to replace a player or two, but you are right, from 16 and on for a few classics, we can have a lot of stability, but that’s not to say there will not be any doors open for other players in the Empire to make an impression and get on the team, because those opportunities will always exist.

SS: Speaking of roster stability, you are able to return the entire starting lineup. It’s a mixture of ages ranging from 22 to 35, and this should be a strength.

CS: I think so, we should be able to score.

SS: Which team concerns you the most as the biggest obstacle to winning a third championship?

CS: I can’t point a finger at just one. I do believe we are the best team in the tournament, and we are in a position where we just need to be worrying about ourselves and not adjusting our game to opponents. We make opponents adjust to us. Certainly there are several very capable teams, and they know who they are.

SS: Will we see the typical Newmanistan trash talk on the field? Jessica Brasfield looks like someone who likes to bring it.

CS: I don’t discourage it. We can back it up and the team has fun with it.

SS: As do you!

CS: (laughs) Not by design, but I will always let my passion show.

SS: Anything you would like to add before we close this out?

CS: I think we covered the essentials. I’m excited about this Classic, we’ve got a great shot, and the players are pumped as well.

SS: Thank you Chrissy.

CS: You’re welcome, Shannon. I hope to have these interviews with you many times.

X Island Inquirer

It's time for another big season of Baseball action. The 15th World Baseball Classic is about to begin in The Babbage Islands and the Taeshan Purple Knights will look to make it back to the Finals after a 9th place finish in the 14th Classic, after their first Championship in the lucky 13th event. Though sadly this season may mark the end of an era as many players have decided to retire after their 12th season with the Knights. Third Starting Pitcher Rian Willemson will be out next year, replaced by youngster Jack Montenegro for the next round of Action. Riane Totalez is out in Left Field replaced by Jay Nedved who will be replaced on the bench by Mywane. Fier Hernis's cleats will be hung at Center Field and he will be replaced by youngster Rhett Miller, and Shortstop Sol Jeeves will be replaced by Adam Fisher.

This year the Knights will be grouped with teh following teams, the closest to their rank Dancougar who pose a very big threat to their possible chances at making a championship run, Delaclava will also look to make things interesting, as will The Fanboyists who are looking to make a valiant run as the final ranked team from Group B. The final two teams are Bloodbath Valley, what a nice name, and South Norwegia. Neither looks to be much of a threat in their first year so the Knights should have a somewhat easy chance, but they will still have to fight hard for their 2nd Championship.

Postby Secristan » Thu May 06, 2010 3:12 am

The Secristan Department of Sports released the teams official roster this evening. Players still have to bid for their positions, but the SDOS for baseball tends to “lose” the bids of lesser known or less-skilled players.

The SDOS would also like to remind people of the following:

DH?: Yes! (Only because it is one more spot the SDOS could hold an auction for and make money on).
Choose my runscorers: Yes
Choose my lineup: No, it is here.
Follow my Pitching Rotation: No, we use a 5-man rotation so it shouldn’t be hard to figure out who starts.
Godmod scoring events: Yes
RP injuries to my players: Yes, but I will determine how bad it is.
Godmod injuries to my players: No
Eject my players: Yes
Godmod other events: Yes to fights, brawls, charging the mound, arrogant player or fan behavior and weather. No to anything else.

The winning stadium bidder to host out home games is:
Monopoly Stadium- Located in the Capital City of Amherst, it’s been a little while since the largest stadium in the nation has also been the highest bidder. It can seat 64,000 for baseball
Dimensions: LF: 351, LCF: 366, CF: 397, RCF: 366, RF: 351

Head Coach: John Michaelson (63): Coached in WBC 8, 10-14. He was outbid in #9.

Brendan O’Sullivan (27, R/R)- O’Sullivan, in his third appearance, served as the ace of the staff for the first time in WBC14 and fared well, but may have also been underwhelming. He can bring the heat, but his curveball is his money pitch.

Matthew Courville (28, L/L)- Considered the protégé to Steve Jamison, the long time ace of the staff, the fact that Courville was bypassed by O’Sullivan is a little surprising but shouldn’t be. Courville is still more like Jamison was, in terms of an aggressive power pitcher, then O’Sullivan. Some are calling him an underachiever. He has something to prove, and knows it.

Kyle Flannery (29, R/R)- Kyle is another returnee, making his third appearance. He relies on a sinker/slider combination.

Kevin Chavis (22, R/R)- The youngster pitched for the Junior Millionaires U-21 team in the Keisler Cup as the ace of that staff and debuted well in the last Classic. His top three pitches are the fastball, curve, and changeup.

Anthony O’Brien (19, L/L)- Anthony appeared on the U-16 Junior Millionaires staff for the Keisler Cup, and like Chavis, he was the ace of that staff. He is making his Classic debut and his top three pitches are the fastball, curve, and slider. He has a lot in common in Chavis.

Bullpen:
Francisco Martinez (37, LHP)- THE CLOSER. Martinez has been the closer since WBC 9 and still gets the job done. Generally only goes one inning, but is capable of going two. He can hit 102 MPH, and mixes in a nasty circle change.

Michael McKeon (40, RHP)- SET UP MAN. McKeon is also a closer by trade, however instead of attempting to compete with Martinez in bidding for that role, Michael has settled on the 8th inning set-up man role, and he has done this since WBC9. He did close in WBC 8. Has developed good chemistry with Martinez on the national team, and their ages are not a hindrance at this point.

Chad Jarvis (37, RHP)- Short reliever. Makes his fifth appearance in the WBC as the Millionaires seventh inning specialist. Relies on a nasty 12-6 drop on his curve, plus a splitter.

Andrew Tomberlin (36, RHP)- Andrew makes his fourth appearance. He’s to be used as a long reliever (i.e. situations where we would pull a starter in the 5th inning or prior).

Ricky Sweeney (24, LHP)- Short reliever. Ricky was the closer of the Keisler Cup’s U-21 team, and possesses a nice fastball, nasty curve and downright criminal circle change. He is a closer domestically, and possibly the heir apparent to F-Mart if he ever hangs them up. It’s his second appearance on this team.

Jennifer Taylor (18, LHP)- A chick? Wasn’t it other One Big Island nations did that? Jennifer did appear on our last roster, and also appeared in the Keisler Cup. She will be used in many different situations, but as she is a starter by trade the preference will be for longer situations. Her out pitch is a nasty sinker and cutter.

Starting Lineup (using DH) (Age, Throws/Bats)
1) Jonas Kindlan- LF (30, R/S) Speedster; had hit second in the order previously but moves up after Jason Carlin did not bid. Very popular with young female fans and is in his fifth WBC.

2) Brian Schuster- CF (17, R/R)- One of the most arrogant kids you will ever meet. His trash talking began at the Keisler Cup as a 13-year old, and thanks to his billionaire parents, he was able to be the highest bidder for this spot. He’s projected five-tool player so he is able to back it up.

3) Todd Meyer- 1B (24, L/S)- The cleanup batter on the U-21 Keisler Cup team, Meyer was the DH in WBC 14 and is now ready to showcase his skills as an everyday player. He has a ton of power, and should be a name you hear more of as time goes on.

4) William Sutliffe- RF (29, R/S)- With the great John Fusco now no longer bidding to be a part of the national team, Sutliffe takes over the cleanup and leadership role for the team although some will argue that he already became that with his excellent performance in WBC 14. He can hit for average, power, and steal bases.

5) Jeremy Duffy- 2B (18, R/R)- The youth movement continues as another former Keisler Cup player takes a starting job, but Duffy is a little different in that he is a complete rookie. He has great power, though might be a little raw at this stage of his career, opponents still better respect that power or he can hurt you badly.

6) Adrienne Hornicek- 3B (31, L/L)- Adrienne doesn’t have much power, but she can hit for a .340 or so batting average which makes her very useful to “clean up the bases” after the big bats. Should get many RBI’s just like she did last time. A perfect “#6" batter.

7) Eddie Forte- SS (30, R/R)- Doubles-type hitter, has tremendous discipline. Gold-glove caliber fielder. Drops from 3rd in the lineup.

8) Jose Ortiz- DH (30, R/R)- - First time starter, even though it just as the DH. He has a ton of power. He also strikes out a ton. In the field, when necessary, he is a corner infielder.

9) Kip Kircher- C (38, R/S)- Excellent hitter, but could use improvement behind the plate. One of those guys that if he wasn’t Secristani, you’d think he could play for free he enjoys the game so much.

Bench:
Lenny Jackson- C (29, L/L)- For the fifth time he is on the WBC team as the backup catcher.

Kevin Fisher- 1B/3B (18, L/L)-- One to watch for the future, he can do it all. This is his debut, but he was the cleanup batter of the U-16 Keisler Cup team.

Chris Ainsley- 2B/SS (24, R/S)- Outstanding defensive middle infielder, and the bat is respectable, as last season he hit .287 with 11 HR’s. He has great wheels, too

Scottie Miniger- OF (22, L/S)- Probably the fastest player on the team, he will pinch run late in games. He’s not a bad hitter, and could one day, start.

When we are in nations not using the DH: Same lineup, just move Kircher to 8th and pitcher hits 9th.

Tarrentum Falcons Sporting News

Altarus, Kalasion - The Falcons arrived last night in Kalasion and were greeted magificently. Unlike their other trips around their region, they were not met with rotten eggs and moldy biscuits, good this be a good sign, or a bad one? We won't ponder anymore about spoilt nourishment but let us look towards today's practice. My co-writer, Giani Boco and I got up early and hailed a taxi to the stadium where the first game will be played tomorrow. The field is impressive but I still believe that, in all things, Tarrentum has the most beautiful architecture in the world. Our rolling hills, our vineyards, the black smoke coming from the Arms Manufacturers, makes me almost homesick thinking of it.

Back to Kalasion however and we thoroughly believe that this team is prepared to amaze the rest of the WBC countries. Though not fielding all-women teams (and in my opinion who would want to?) like Cassadaigua or Newmanistan who, surprisingly, have found great success in the WBC, all Tarrentum is confident that our team will make it out of their group. The pitching staff has performed spectacularly for their respective ASML teams. Quite frankly, the pitching couple of Bianconi has really clicked playing ball together. There have been no [censored by Tarrentum National Press Committee] the Tarrentum National FC, which recently had a dismal showing at the Tolietdonia International Football Tournament.

Everyone was loose on the plane and no major incidents have yet to be reported. It looks as though Michael Grastiona, known for his alcohol abuse, is keeping his "thirst" some what in check. I only witnessed him drinking three shots of whiskey in two minutes before he switched to, what was hopefully, straight soda. Well, at least he made it off the plane under his own power. All of Tarrentum's leading baseball writers feel that Grastiona is only here to see if he can [censored by Tarrentum National Press Committee]. All believe that Romeo Vasparian is here, not as the long reliever (which is not widely used) but as Grastiona's replacement as the number 5 man in the rotation once Grastiona trips up.

Well, my coffee is getting cold next to my laptop so our next installment will be written by my good friend Giani Boco after the Falcons first practice in Altarus.
