And we are back! Preview of the Ethanian Open
By Aristide Masterson

How long has it been since Squidroidians took the grass? Ever since all, and I do mean all of the IU and Polaris representatives got knocked out in Round 1 of the AOpen, they just hardly couldn't wait for the tide to turn to Ethane. And the tide has turn, as all 8 of the players have now settled into Lowes for the Ethanian Open, the final Tier 1 tournament of the grass season and the penultimate Tier 1 competition on the Tour before the International Tennis Trophy and the coveted NSTT Finals, which will also bring upon the inaugural Diamond Trophy. While the Squidroidians will not likely make either the Finals or Diamond Trophy, they have all the time in the world to bring upon their glory at Lowes.

The nation's journey at Lowes starts with Singles Q2, as Niels Alberink of Inkopolis University will take on Cytoria's Caledon Holt for a spot in the 3rd Qualifying Round (Or Round 1 for normal people). Unlike previous tournaments there is no doubles qualifying rounds in the traditional (See, outside Squidroidia) sense. Abe, Cowden, Cabrera and McPhee will enter Squidroidian Q1, or in normal terms Round 1, the IU pair against Julia Devoningstan and Juan Subdula of Northwest Kalactin to take on the 3 seeded Royalwood and Lightford of Springmont, while Polaris' female doubles face Miguel Taberon and Pedro Arrachar of Acastanha.

Now how about the singles? What will everyone (After Alberink does Q2) do in Q3? If Alberink wins against Holt he gets Felipe de la Rosa, while the IU women's player Diệp Van der Hout has to go through Tiffany Love for a spot in Round 1, where guess who, #7 Dewa Putu awaits. If Alberink defeats de la Rosa, Carlos Thirdspade will have to take him on. As for our Polaris heroes, Toma Karga will have to take on Oscar Holden for a chance to take down #4 Pelissa Giannapolous, while Houston Sawyer, who when he last did a Tier 1 competition did THAT against Dewa Putu, will have to defeat Heather Servers for a chance to do it all again against #5 Ricardo Toli.

It's Lowes. Anything can happen. Just saying.

Sabanero Reaches Top Ranking Ahead of Ethanian Open First Round
LOWES, Etn.—A sense of déjà vu was felt by many Aqualian tennis fans this past week as Bartolo Sabanero lifted the King Tristian Memorial Trophy in Krytenia, only to come just one match short of the doubles title in the AOpen, a repeat of his performance in each draw at his last Grand Slam in Hamilton. His continued success in singles has vaulted him to the number one ranking in the multiverse, and he seeks to extend his winning streak in singles tourneys to four as the Ethanian Open gets underway. He will also continue to chase that elusive first doubles championship alongside Qualo Tabos—but they're not the only ones vying to become the first Aqualia titleholders: the Pérez twins, Jordi and Rubén, will begin their own run in Ethane tomorrow in the first round against Sigrund and Usula Dolstottir of Chromatika.

There are also three other Aqualias in the singles draw who will seek to go as far as possible (and rack up as many points as possible) in the last regular tournament of the year before the NSTT Finals and International Tennis Trophy. Matéu Virxiliu automatically qualified for the Round of 64 and will face either Karina Gerard or Samuel Wilson. Carla Tormo, who is only entered into the singles draw for this event, will take on Krytenian Athena Piper in her first match tomorrow, and Daniel Cervantes will then go up against Hebitaka's Rof Leshner.

We here at the Toboso Chronicle hope you will join us tomorrow for live updates and full results of all Aqualian matches, as well as for the duration of the Ethanian Open. Stay tuned!

Not so Rosy for Alberink - Squidroidia down to 3 heading into Singles Q3
By Aristide Masterson

The Ethanian Open kicked off in Lowes in a surprising way for Inkopolis University star Niels Alberink, as the 2nd qualifying round threw up a surprising loss for the college sophomore at the Newton-Smith Tennis Centre against Cytoria's Caledon Holt, 6-3, 3-6, 3-6. Although he had a good showing in set one of the qualifying game, the lack of playing time between his elimination at the AOpen and now was bad enough to have him in this situation - Losing a qualifying matchup against a Cytorian and thus being eliminated from the tournament so early.

...And we just realized Cytoria does not exist anymore. Well snap crackle and pop my kneecaps, he lost to a stateless tennis player. Polaris and IU might have to lobby to get Alberink into Q3 against McNeil. Other than that absolute blunder by the Ethanian Open organizing committee, the next round remains the same for the other squids in the tournament, although the McNeil game is pending on any change the committee makes regarding Cytorian players, most likely removing them entirely and giving free passes to any opponents who happen to face a Cytorian in the third qualifiers and Alberink himself ala the AOpen - Karga faces Holden, Sawyer faces Severs and Van der Hout faces Love. Let's hope at least one of them makes the first round.

..Or of course Alberink becomes the lucky loser.

This isn't very well start...

First two Waisnorian players started their performance in Ethanian Open, and almost immediately ended it. That's how they played:

Yolena Mingleff (CMT) 3 6 6
Anton Koshelev (WSN) 6 4 8

Anton Koshelev was the first to start performing at this tournament and brought the first victory to the Waisnor. The first set of the game with Yolena Mingleff from Chromatika was won by Anton with a score of 6-3. In the second set, Yolena decided to turn the game upside down. The set went almost exactly the same as the first, only with inverted roles, the set ended with a score of 6-4. In the third set, a real struggle began for further participation in the tournament, where neither player wanted to give the other an advantage in the confrontation. As a result, Anton was able to snatch the victory, completing the third set with a score of 8-6.

Sunil Kali (HTK) 1 6 12
Mikhail Korotkevich (WSN) 6 0 10

Battle of Mikhail Korotkevich and Sunil Kali from Hebitaka can be described as completely insane. The match began with the fact that in the first set Mikhail destroyed Sunil with a score of 6-1. The oddities begin with the second set, when suddenly Sunil repaid Korotkevich with his own coin and did not let him win a single game, ensuring himself a dry victory in the set. And if the third set of the game of Yolana and Anton was called "a real fight", then the third set of the game of Sunil and Mikhail can be called "the most real fight in history." In total, 22 games were played, almost every time when a player took the advantage, the second player quickly took it for himself, and so on ad infinitum, until Sunil won the decisive 12th set and ensured the continuation of the struggle for himself.

Emilie Elroy (CYT) 5 6 6
Anton Koshelev (WSN) 7 2 0

Going to the second qualifying round, nezt and last rival of Anton was Emilie Elroy from Cythora. But judging by the first set, it was not so obvious - Koshelev won it with a score of 7-5. Apparently, in the second set, Emilie realized that if she continued to play like this, she would be eliminated from the tournament, so she decided to play to the fullest, and this gave results - the second set was won by her with a score of 6-2. And in the third set, Emily already got a taste and just crushed Koshelev, not allowing him to win a single game in the decisive set, thus completing his performance at the tournament.

Alberink flies again, too close to the sun - Singles Q3 Recap
By Aristide Masterson

Well the protest marked by Inkopolis University and Polaris High went through no problem for IU sophomore Niels Alberink - He did evidently make Q3, but did not have the chance to make it to the singles first round. Nor did his teammate Van der Hout. Inkopolis University's singles partners are heading out of Lowes with nothing to show - No wins, no matter the technicality Alberink had for the stateless Cytorians on the court, Polaris High gets another victory in the world of Squidroidian tennis.

Neils Alberink, however, did win a set in his Q3 (Round 1 to non-Squidroidians) tie with Martha McNeil from Grearia, a 6-1 win over the #66 woman in the first set. A 6-1 win in the first set does not guarantee a tennis player a match win. Thus, after a 6-4 set 2 and a 6-3 final set for Martha, she got to advance over the squid in teal.

Diệp Van der Hout also won her first set in her game against West Phoenician #107th Tiffany Love. Like a missile covered in tennis body, the ball racketed back to Love's side of the court, scoring a 6-1 second set against the Octoling from the Valley to force set #3 against Diệp. In a battle that had to go down to 2 clear set wins, Love's advantage over the IU star was one of endurance. Set 3 ended 7-5 for Tiffany Love, as she made round 1 of the Ethane Open.

If you thought that we wouldn't mention the superstars from Polaris High, you'd probably think we just laugh at the university all day. We do not do that here at the Star Sentinel. We laugh at the university and celebrate our tennis heroes, Like Toma Karga, who like Sawyer, had to face a player from New Waldensia. Oscar Holden, #123 on the Tour, would end up winning Set 1, a tight 7-5 win over the high school senior. And you know what Toma did? Bam. 7-6 tight as nails win for Set 2. Set 3 wouldn't be tight like the last 2, however. Why? Toma only went and won the damn thing 6-3 and sent Oscar packing.

And now to the little starlet who did that against Dewa Putu. Mr. Houston Sawyer, the man of the hour, against New Waldensia's Heather Severs. Unlike the previous 3 matches that were talked about, Houston's game only had 2 sets. Wanna know why? He won both of them over Heather. She didn't look so hot in Set 1, getting 3 games in her books but was just unmatched by Houston's hair and body and physique when he carried that racket. That was a wake-up call for Heather Severs, who forced Sawyer's hand in Set 2 with a close, tight, 13 game set that, of course, ended in Houston getting the win, 6-3. Inkopolis University zip, Polaris High School one plus one. Game, Set and Match this one.

So where does this all stand heading into the next round of competition? Of course, it's Singles Round 1 (Round 2 to those watching outside Squidroidia who don't know that every round before the big ones come in is considered a qualifying round), and 2, count em for the school, 2 Polaris Stars have a chance to take down a giant. Toma Karga will have to slay the 4 seeded and ranked Pelissa Giannapolous from Electrum to see herself perform an upset only comparable in nature to the number 4 being defeated by the number 157 (157 just has too much baggage on them, 4 is way too quick for their liking), while Houston Sawyer once again has the chance to take down a giant - Britonisea's 5th seeded and ranked Ricardo Toli. In normal people's terms, this is the guy who beat Dewa Putu in the Mercidinian Open that one time facing off against the losing finalist of the Electrum Slam. Everyone is favoring Toli to win, but a Round of 16 finish in the AOpen can say a lot.

As for Doubles, Q1 (Round 1 if you don't live in Squidroidia) will see Inkopolis University's Jewel Abe and Dan Cowden take on Kalactins Julia Devoningstan and Juan Subdula, while Cabrera and McPhee go and face Acastanha's Miguel Taberon and Pedro Arrachar. Expect Inkopolis University to not show up again because they never do in Lowes.

There was luck, but it was useless

In some mysterious way, both eliminated players from Waisnor, Anton Koshelev and Mikhail Korotkevich, were able to continue the fight in Ethanian Open despite losing in qualifying rounds. However, this did not help them much in the first round - both were defeated by players from North Alezia - Mikhail Korotkevich lost to Alif Khadarim: 1-6, 6-7, and Anton Koshelev lost to Nur Irin-Amirana: 6-3, 6-4, 5-7. Now we will tell you about the results of the tennis players' meetings, who started immediately from the first round.

Alexey Pustozerov (WSN) 6 6
Margie Brown (GRU) 2 4

Alexey Pustrozerov returned to the tennis competitions with a meeting with Margie Brown from Grearish Union. In the first set, Alexey rather easily defeated MargiE with a score of 6-4. Well, in the second set, Margie played a little more lively and was able to put up more resistance to Alexey than in the last set. However, this did not save her from the defeat with a score of 6-4. Thus, Pustozerov was able to continue his performance at the tournament.

Valery Ushakov (WSN) 1 4
Ken Watanabe-Royalwick (SPM) 6 6

Second Waisnorian, who started from the first round, Valery Ushakov, played his match with Ken Watanabe-Royalwick from Springmont. The results of the first set did not bode well - Ken totally dominated the court and won the set 6-1. In the second set, Valery began to play much more relaxed and thanks to this he was able to impose a fight on Ken. However, he skillfully caught Ushakov on mistakes and knew how to take advantage of them, thanks to which he won in the second set with a score of 6-4, thus passing through the tournament grid.

TENNIS
Sawyer does it again! And then everybody falls out of the sky.
By Aristide Masterson

If you told your nearest Squidroidian bartender that Houston Sawyer would actually win tennis matches against some of the biggest names on the Tour just last year, he would give you a nice cup of sick to drown out that magma hot take you had for the then sophomore. But here he was now, having played in 2 Tier 1 tournaments, the Salvador Hills Open, and the AOpen as the grass season comes to its conclusion, and he has played the role of David in Polaris High's tennis excursions. He beat one Goliath by the name of Dewa Putu Adrian Putra in Zoloronki, and now in Lowes he beat another - The #5 tennis player on the Tour, Ricardo Toli from Britonisea, has just fallen to a 17 year old squid from Inkopolis.

Perhaps green hair is the way to defeating some of the best players in the NationStates Tennis Tour on grass, but Houston Sawyer wasn't a pushover against high seeds. All throughout the match, Toli didn't seem like himself. He wasn't really the guy who showed up to Electrum and nearly win the Slam, and it showed. He struggled, yes, STRUGGLED against Sawyer. He was just a shell of his former glory in the first set, and lost it 6-4, again to a freaking squid from a high school tennis program. The second set was just the same old tired Toli being destroyed brick by brick by a squid, a squid who had the pace and skill to easily capitalize on his mistakes. The second set would end in a 6-4 victory for Sawyer, being met by a chorus of cheers from the spectators as he walked off with a big upset, an upset that was to some bigger than the Dewa Putu victory.

Everyone else, however, did not do so well. Singles Round 1 wasn't kind to Toma Karga, being dumped out in 2 sets against Pelissa Giannapolous of Electrum 6-3, 6-2 in favor of Toma's opposition. That, of course, left Houston as the only singles runner in the Ethane Open heading into Singles Round 2. But Doubles Qualifying (Otherwise known as Doubles Round 1) was also going on, and both pairs of Squidroidians were dumped like garbage into the trashcan. IU's Abe and Cowden got their asses handed to them by Kalactins Julia Devoningstan and Juan Subdula 6-1, 6-1, an embarrassing loss to the duo. But the Squidroidian doubles of Cabrera and McPhee from Polaris weren't down without a fight. Losing a tight set to Taberon and Arrachar 6-7, they would come back with a second set win, 3-6. The 2 pairs would go at it hard in Set 3, even forcing the win by 2 rule. But of course, McPhee and Cabrera were sent packing, losing the set 6-8 and leaving lone Houston Sawyer as the only Squidroidian left in Lowes.

Houston was now one of 32 players left in Lowes for the singles tournament, and the competition would only get more and more heated for the young squid. His Round 2 (Round 3 to non-Squidroidians) opponent was Rodrick Uppatin from Kohnhead, ranked #42 on the Tour and for Sawyer a good chance to punch his ticket into the next round. But with an upset already in the books this tournament, he could go farther than a last 16 appearance if he tries hard enough.

Centralis Herald - Sports Section - Luke Zhang

Giannapolous cruises to round three of the Ethanian Open

The last time we saw Giannapolous, she had ended her last match with a soul-crushing five set defeat in the finals of the AOpen against Sabanero. Being one of the oldest competitors on tour, and on the Electrumite team, she was simply fatigued by the end of that fifth set by Sabanero, and she duly capitulated. It was an ignominious end to the biggest match of her career so far, and while she seemed gracious in her runner-up press conference in Krytenia, she promptly disappeared off the face of the earth before today.

So it was a good to see her again today when she defeated Karga in the second round at Lowes. In fact, she was back to her usual scintillating form, seeing off the poor Squidroidian in an hour and a half on her favourite surface, conceding only the five games throughout the match. Her first serve percentage was high, and reeled off those quick winners and shortened those points, a far cry to that slog of a final that she played in Emberton.

When we asked her during her winning press conference where she went during the tournaments, she said, "I mean, my bodies not what it used to be, and I had never made it that far in any tournament in my entire professional career. I booked myself a little R&R at a New Sarum beach."

Don't we all need one of those.

We kinda knew, what was going to happen...

This day at Ethanian Open two Waisnorian players participated in tennis battles, with mixed results:

Ngurah Putra Muliawan (PCU) 5 7 6
Alexey Pustozerov (WSN) 7 5 2

Only remaining singles player, Alexey Pustozerov, met with Ngurah Putra Muliawan from Pemecutan. The first set promised that there would be a tense struggle for victory; Alexey won it with a score of 7-5. And while expectations were justified, the second set went off in the same atmosphere, only the players changed roles and Ngurah won with the same score as in the first set. In the third set, Ngurah began to play more seriously and defeated Pustozerov, winning 6-2, thus knocking Alexei out of the tournament.

Evgeny Kondratenko/Oleg Vlasov (WSN) 6 6
Alan Crown/Boskur Najeeb (SPM) 3 2

Probably the most famous tennis players from Waisnor, Evgeny Kondratenko and Oleg Vlasov, started performance on the Ethanian Open from the match with Alan Crown and Boskur Najeeb from Springmont. The first set was pretty easy for Evgeny and Oleg - they won a 6-3 victory pretty quickly. Then Kondratenko and Vlasov decided to relax a little, but this didn't made it harder for them to play, in the second set they also won a victory, this time with a score of 6-2.

Szabo, Arendt and Pataki-Weinwurm partnership advance to third round of Ethanian Open

LOWES, ETHANE - Orsolya Szabo's hopes of making it to the end of season tournament is still there after making it to the third round of the Ethanian Open.

Despite having narrowly won the first set against Christine Nam of New Waldensia, 7-6, the World number 29 was able to break the opponent's serve once when the score was tied 2 games apiece in the second set, which enabled her to win 6-4 in the second set and advance to the third round. However, her chances of winning the tournament was significantly lowered when Britonisea's Leo Garry demolished compatriot Armin Miksa, 6-3, 6-3, and will have her meet the World number 16. Another victim of a 2nd round exit was former Gergary #1 Donat Kis, with a heartbreaking 6-8 deciding set loss to Carla Tormo of Aqual, having lost the first set 4-6 but put his powerful serves to use to force a third set on a 7-6 tiebreaker win.

The remaining registered singles player, Bianka Arendt defeated Valentina Spetsova of TJUN-ia, 6-4, 6-3, and will meet Maria Claudia Amulio of Natanians and Nosts, who defeated Theresa Waterford of Kohnhead. Over in the doubles side, Vanessza Pataki and Marvin Weinwurm were able to eke out a 9-7 tiebreaker win over Dariq Ishaqtar and Nur Irin-Amirana of North Alezia. It was not the same fate for the other pairing, Alexandra Barna and Ralph Henschel, losing in three sets to Mihai Carolus Maro and Claudius Ion Varro of Natanians and Nosts, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6. The remaining pair will meet Krytenian pair Jeremy Metagne and Elizabeth Corbisieri who dispatched Oscar Holden and Christine Nam of New Waldensia in the first round.

Star Duo is going forward

There are only one doubles players, Evgeny Kondratenko and Oleg Vlasov, left to represent Waisnor at the Ethanian Open and so far they are handling this really good.

Riley Dovatin/Melissa Turnface (KHD) 4 6 1
Evgeny Kondratenko/Oleg Vlasov (WSN) 6 2 6

Only Waisnorian players left played with Riley Dovatin and Melissa Turnface from Kohnhead. In the first set, Kondratenko and Vlasov clearly had the upper hand, having won it with a score of 6-4. However, in the second set, Riley and Melissa avenged their defeat in the first set, scoring a fairly easy victory over Evgeny and Oleg with a score of 6-2. The third set can be described as "revenge for revenge": Eugene and Oleg won an even more convincing victory in the set, and, as a result, in the match, with a score of 6-1.

Centralis Herald - Sports Section - Luke Zhang

Giannapolous sole top seed remaining in Lowes

It's been a not-to-shabby grass court season for Giannapolous as she finds herself the only top four player remaining in Lowes. Perhaps it was equal parts exhaustion and equal parts wanting-to-get-this-season-done that saw those players get eliminated, but for Giannapolous, she is thriving under the conditions. Indeed, 1,865 out of 2,155 (or 86.5%) of her points have come from the grass season, making her efforts in the earlier hard and clay court seasons just a mere afterthought in terms of points.

It's no secret that many of the top players eschew the grass season. Toli is a specialist in the hard courts, and always does well in Centralis. Simmons can only play his grinding style of tennis well on the clay. With the shorter rallies and greater winners on the grass, it is always too hard for him to make the necessary adjustments to his game style while Lisicki has just had a dreadful grass court season.

In today's match on the Coastside Court, the highest capacity court in Lowes, she comfortably dispatched Leo Garry 6-4, 7-6. She took advantage of the blustery seaside conditions of the court with the wind often turning short balls to unreachable balls. Garry clearly struggled with the windy conditions from the outset, with a too-high ball toss combined with the breeze often making the ball just out of reach by the time he rotated his shoulders to serve. His first serve percentage was woeful, leading Giannapolous to take the early break, which she promptly held onto for the rest of the set. Although Garry's serve started to improve, he couldn't make any headway in the Giannapolous serve, so she won the first set 6-4.

The second set was even closer, with multiple breaks of serve, but what proved decisive were the ten points during that tiebreak at six all. Giannapolous mixed things up a bit by deciding not to serve and volley. Garry, who was expecting Giannapolous to close the points quickly, had decided to go for more winners. Unfortunately, he was more error prone. In one point, he cursed visibly (netting a warning) after hitting what should have been an easy volley out. In another, he was caught off-guard seeing GIannapolous switching direction that he changed his hit midway through a return, netting the ball. In the end, Giannapolous would take the tiebreaker 7-3, taking game set and match.

In the quarterfinals, Giannapolous will face Juan Subdula. He's made a name for himself after making it to the AOpen semifinals -- his first ever deep run in any tournament. He seemed unstoppable before he crumbled in five sets to Giannapolous. He was simply exhausted from making it that far, with him losing that final set in a 6-0 capitulation. Subdula's no slouch and he will definitely be looking for revenge -- he has this aggressive style of tennis that nearly blew Giannapolous off the court in Emberton. Tune in tomorrow to see whether Giannapolous can go that one step further in her quest to win two singles titles this year.

The Turnip: Boycott the Ethanian Open!
by Primmy Primmy Primrose

After our award-winning journalism at the AOpen, where we discovered that athletes were playing high on drugs (playing 'on grass'), we are proud to announce another breakthrough in our drugs in tennis investigation.

We have once again caught tennis athletes doing the unthinkable -- they are doing drugs, and now this time its in Ethane.

And once again, the shocking indifference of the media has been absolutely gobsmacking. Just like in the AOpen situation, where the media were nonchalantly talking about players playing while high on the devil's lettuce, they have done it again by slipping in a casual reference of players using drugs while playing tennis. This time, we have received reports that players are now playing on 'grass cracks' which we can only assume to be a devilish mixture of two of the world's most dangerous drugs of all time.

After all, there could possibly be no other interpretation of the phrase 'grass cracks'!

As part of our refusal to boycott watching tennis tournaments in protest of the extensive drug use at the AOpen, we have not watched a single second of either tournament. Indeed, we switched off the TV when we heard the NationStates Tennis Tour was going to force all of their players to play while high on drugs in the "grass season". Shocking stuff.

Many of you wrote in to say that we have been entirely misunderstanding these situations, and that really, tennis players are playing on grass courts, not playing while high on drugs. What a patently ridiculous thought -- we can't even begin to entertain that possibility, really. How does the ball even bounce on grass? Wouldn't it just skid everywhere? We rest our case. Boycott the Ethane Open and boycott the grass.
