Hockey:
Field Hockey is a hugely popular sport in Mattijana with a high quality league and two very highly rated national teams. HK Petrovijanka, one of the country's best clubs, has the most players in the squads, most of whom are encouraged to play in the top domestic leagues.
Abreviations: GK-Goalkeeper, Def-defender, CDM-Defensive Midfielder, CAM-Attacking Midfielder, LW-Left Winger, RW-Right Winger, LM-Left Midfielder, RM-Right Midfielder, CF-Centre Forward
The team enjoy a quick passing game which, although it can lead to a few loose moments, is generally well drilled and effective at prising open the back lines of any opposition defence. Running is also encouraged and players are often told to try and beat defenders, particularly the pacey Dominikanov and Tornakić.

The women's Hockey team is the more successful team in the country after some good, albeit not great results in the Olympics. Like the men, they like to play with a fast style made up of short and sharp passing and have two powerful wingers capable of cutting through any defensive line.

Football:
Abreviations: GK-goalkeeper, LB-left back, CB-centre back, RB-right back, CDM-defensive Midfield, CAM-Attacking Midfield, LM-left midfield, RM-Right midfield, RW-right wing, LW-left wing, CF-centre forward.
Alongside Hockey, football is another popular sport in Mattijana and although it's national league is not the world's biggest, it is popular and has lead to a solid foundation for the Mattijanan teams. The traditional Mattijanan way is to build a team from the Goalkeeper upwards and to encourage attractive and direct passing and running play from a young age. Marko Hojbjerg is very much the star man in the men's team and is a proven talent for club and country. The big question is whether he and the team can perform at high pressure tournament level.

Volleyball:
Volleyball is another emerging sport in Mattijana with the newly formed domestic league having produced some encouraging talent. The squad is a fairly young and less experienced one whose main focus will be to gain some vital experience for the future.

Handball:
Handball is a fringe sport, albeit a professionalised one with a reasonably good fanbase within the country. Like water polo, all members of the national team must play within the Mattijanan domestic league system, making for a tight-knit group. The team have however been out of the handball world cup for a few years, so may be rusty on the world stage.

Rugby Sevens:
Sevens is a sport that has somewhat stagnated in Mattijana of late. Administrative difficulties have kept them out of the limited international competitions on offer recently and the domestic circuit has always played second fiddle to Union despite previous popularity. Still, Mattijana can offer two strongish teams that have an outside chance of a medal. The women in particular boast a proud history having won the first ever sevens Olympic Gold.

A Mattijanan phrase book:
Mattijanan is the language throughout Mattijana, but as it is not spoken in any other country, English and German are spoken to an excellent standard by many. However, some people from more rural communities may have a less advanced standard of English and if you should happen to come across anyone from our country in need of help, here are some words and phrases you may find useful:
