QUEBEC CITY, CAPITALE-NATIONALE - They often say that the olympic village is like a small enclave where all the actual actions take place, from people of farthest parts possible meeting each other to jackrabbits flying all around the village. Heck, that's probably the beauty of olympics for many athletes and not to forget, journalists. So what if this happens on a smaller scale, but with lot more familiar groups of people on a really small space? On top of that, on a fleet that's expected to go to not just one but two olympic cities on the other side of the world?

Right. You have probably heard of this project proposed and prepared, as an extension of the historical precedences, by the RQOC over the last ten years since their decision to not participate in the Republica Games. This was due two main factors, first being the sudden illness that struck Jacques IX the 'Conquerer-King', the late Quebecois monarch widely remembered with that nickname, as well as the previous string of scandals a decade ago that exposed a late former Prime Minister, Jacques Oh, as the key figure behind attempted coverup of years of sex abuse and eating disorder culture in both Athletics Quebec and Gymnastics Quebec.

All this and that with unfortunate illnesses and scandals, while tragic for those whose chances were taken away, was inevitable and gave the Quebecois nation and the Commonwealth much needed time to think. Then now, with the new era ushering under the new monarch, Her Majesty Christine II, it seems as if the ways of the old times finally came back.

With just a week left before hundreds of Quebecois men and women head to Istria and Orean, at least a half a day away from Quebec via aeroplane, rumours have surfaces that the Royal Kingdom of Quebec delegation, both athletes and coaches present, will be staying on two cruise ships - each named The Pride of Quebecois Commonwealth bound for Istria and International to Orean - with the ships staying in the port of Schimpol (home to surfing and sailing events on the Orean side) and Istria. To accommodate for greater demand, four liners (2 to Istria, 2 to Orean) will be anchored alongside during the games and provide lodgings for those whom the RQOC termed (and meant only for themselves) as the "Olympic Family, Friends and Supporters".

But what made this practice, a particularly popular and controversial one in the international media in the Jacquesian Age, come back? When asked earlier this year about the plans, the RQOC vice-president Noah Hamel, previously told the Gazette that Team Quebec, like in past 2 olympics, will continue with their different living arrangement to ensure maximum privacy and security. While the successful security measures that have taken during their last participation in the Olympiad in Novonaya, Kelssek; and Provinsk, Vekaiyu; was something they expected it to continue, what happened in Republica just six years ago, as well as the assassination of the Banijan Kabaka Albert III, had essentialised such measures.

‘We are just following along the precedences of the past olympiads,’ said Yannick Ahn, the Royal Quebecois Fencing Federation President. ‘One of many reasons why the RQOC had originally come up with these arrangements in Aeropag were because of what had happened in Zube and Kytler Bay City. Thus, after seeing the acts of terrorism committed against innocent lives by the late monarch and (then-) Prime Minister Saganash, who had decided the funding allocation for the Ministry of Sports and Recreations to complete the project, had this in mind when the nation decided to come back for the Olympiad.’

'As far as I know from what I've heard so far, We'll have 3 cruise ships in the Schimpol docks.' Alexander Nikopoulos, the captain of the cruise ship International, told the Gazette. 'There'll be one with the national team athletes and their staff members, and two others for olympic people. And then we have the other three heading to Istria under the same arrangement.' When asked on what exact dock they will land, Mr. Nikopoulos declined to comment, stating that it's not up to him to tell at this point.

The twin ships housing the athletes and the staff members will be smallest of the two, 130,000 GT International and The Pride of Quebecois Commonwealth operated by Odeon Cruise Lines, which bills itself as the ‘International Cruise Services for Everyone’. Both ships have their maximum capacity at 1,410, had their recent cruises in the Northwestern Quebec and the Northandryun Passage all the way to Vilita and Huayramarca, and will be housing roughly 850 people each (combining for around 1700) in Schimpol and Istria.

Despite the return of the cruise ships drawing major public attention, the Quebecois authorities have made sure to stay mum about the journey- until they arrive in Istria and Orean after a week of fun, fitness and fuckery. In one part they're still staying mum about the details regarding the cruise ships. For example Anthea Burke, the Secretary of the Royal Quebecois Olympics Committee (RQOC), refused to comment on a reporter's question asked earlier today about how the transportation will work for athletes between Schimpol and Orean.

She listed security as the reason for not disclosing the method, but instead emphasised that it is absolutely important to provide space for those who work to earn their spots. ‘RQOC maintains its current stance on the use of alternative arrangements for this edition of the Olympiad because we believe that our athletes should maintain not only the best time preparing for their athletes, but also that they get best possible rest and quality time with their friends and families.’

She also said that RQOC, besides the common misconceptions, does not have any policy against Quebecois athletes visiting their respective olympic villages and surrounding areas, as well as their non-designated airship if they wished to. When asked if there is a curfew for the athletes, she said that there's none: ‘There is nothing to be concerned about, as we do understand that each and every athlete has different ways to prepare ahead and during the Olympiad. If we overthink into this and try to place them into a special mold for their piece of mind, that will certainly fail.’ She said, before passing the mic to members of the Athletes’ Commission.

In the meanwhile, The Bubonic Plague, the supporters group for every affiliated Quebecois national teams, will be making their way through the quadruplets of liners named Jubilee, Jeopardy, The Grand Evangelion and Ragnarok operated by Highlander Cruise Lines based in St. John’s. The company listed each 300,0000-ton whale’s capacity at 4,000 guests.

A company spokeswoman for Highlander Cruise Lines declined to give information, saying it was bound by contract not to disclose details. The likewise requests to obtain an interview with the RQOC, the Olympic Committee, and the Ministry of Sport and Recreation did not materialise for The Bubonic Plague’s additional cruise ships.

OOC: Huge thanks to Krytenia for this RP idea, and letting me use it.
Kalactanian XIV Olympiad Sport-by-Sport Preview, Part One

Aquatics
Events: 9
Top Athlete: David Lewis, 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 100m Relay
Overall Predictions: Unfortunately, the Kalactanians do not have much to give in terms of the aquatics department, and do not have many athletes that can compete with the best in the world. David Lewis can be expected to possibly have a breakout run in any of the short swimming events, and the national water polo team could either way.
Medal Prospects: None

Archery
Events: 1
Top Athlete: Ken Allen, Mens Individual and Mens Team
Overall Predictions: We don’t have a bad national archery team by any means, but we don’t really know much about them. Carlos Hall, Ken Allen and Harry Stewart will be our athletes competing in the team event for the Kalactanians, and all 3 of them could look at putting the Kalactanian team in a top 10 spot in the team event.
Medal Prospects: None

Athletics
Events: 13
Top Athlete: Tim Diaz, Mens Marathon
Overall Predictions: One of the best sections for the Kalactanians this year, Athletics will be a place to watch for medals. The Kalactanians have many good sprinters that could look to give the best in the world a run for their money in the 100 and 200 meter events. They also have many good long distance runners, which is highlighted by Marathon runner Tim Diaz, and 1500m runner Bo Butler.
Medal Prospects: Tim Diaz, Bo Butler, Jacob Klein, Dennis Cox, Sean Davis, Craig Powell

Badminton
Events: 1
Top Athlete: Wendell Himalay, Mens Individual
Overall Predictions: Despite winning the gold medal in Badminton at Republica, we don’t have much in terms of a Badminton team this year. You probably won’t be seeing any medals being taken home from these guys this year. Overall, Himalay can’t be trusted to put up good numbers long enough to make a good team.
Medal Prospects: None

Basketball
Events: 2
Top Team: 3x3 Mens Basketball
Overall Predictions: Things are looking very high for the means 3x3 basketball team, who is putting up one of the best teams in the world for these games. That team is made up of the top young players in the nation, which includes Joe Green and Knox Blythe. The regular men’s basketball, team isn’t the best by any means, but they could get some good games and go to the KO’s.
Medal Prospects: 3x3 Basketball Team

Baseball/Softball
Events: 1
Top Team: Mens Baseball Team
Overall Predictions: We aren’t really looking great in this department, as we are fielding a very new and young team that probably won’t do much in the end. The WBC 49 performance in Newmanistan could say otherwise though, as they made it too the Round of 16 in that tournament, and almost advanced against one of the best teams in the world, on their home turf.
Medal Prospects: None

Cycling
Events: 9
Top Cycler: Jimmy Wilson, Mens Road Race
Overall Predictions: Cycling has never been a strong part of the Kalactanian’s Olympic game, never having won a medal and we have never put up great cyclers. Look for the 9 Cyclers from this years team struggle to make the cut, at best they might be able to put up some good times during the Road Race, but nothing else really.
Medal Prospects: None

Fencing
Events: 3
Top Athlete: Larry Wood, Mens Sabre
Overall Predicitons: This is another event that really can’t be looked at as a good event for the Kalactanians, as their top athlete is considered, below average, at best by the world standards. W Kalactanians will be entering in all 3 of the team events, so we will see if they are able to make any big things happen there.
Medal Prospects: None

Football
Events: 1
Top Team: Mens Football
Overall Predictions: We don’t have much hope for the Mens U-18 team to do well, but there are some young players that we can look to develop for the future. This is really a good tournament to make sure that these players have the adequate international experience to one day, maybe go out and place high in tournaments like the World Cup.
Medal Prospects: None

Golf
Events: 1
Top Golfer: Juan King, Mens Individual
Overall Predicitons: The Kalactanians have a pretty good Golf team, but we will see if that ends up coming through for them. Juan and Carl King are the 2 best players on the team, and they can both look to try and challenge for a medal later in their careers, but not now.
Medal Prospects: None
AO Lacrosse Invitational 2 Champions
World Twenty20 Championship X Champion
Cup of Harmony 78 Host
RP population: 23 million
AOHC 7
All India Cup 1
MAC 5&6
Gold Coast Basketball Tournament 1

Athletes, Officials, Fans Prepared for Olympic Opening Ceremonies

We’re just a few hours away now from the opening ceremonies of the Games of the XIV Olympiad in Orean, Liventia and Istria, Banija, and across the country and world, Siovanija & Teusland are prepared for the Olympiad.

“We’d like to offer our best wishes to all of the athletes competing in the Olympic Games. We know that you’ll make our nation, and yourselves, very proud,” read a statement by Minister of Sport Elias Scheffler in this morning’s session of the National Chancellery.

All in all, Siovanija & Teusland’s athletes will be competing in 282 events, as well as the demonstration event in the sport of gridiron football. The delegation will be split in two, with some athletes travelling to Liventia and some to Banija. As a result, there will be two opening ceremonies to pay attention to, and two delegations to each city.

In Orean, the collection of athletes includes those competing in diving, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, gymnastics, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, sport climbing and surfing. Leading them into Orean’s Grovers Olympic Park Stadium will be Thomas Fischer, the man who holds the distinction of being Siovanija & Teusland’s only Olympic gold medalist. Fischer was a bit of an underdog going into the Men’s One Person Dinghy event in Republica four years ago, but put all of that aside to come away with the gold. He was named the flagbearer for the delegation in Orean as a result of that performance.

There’s hope, however, that he will no longer be the only gold medalist at the end of these Games, and some of it can be found in those athletes competing in Orean. Equestrian is an example of an event that Siovanija & Teusland can pin medal hopes upon. In the individual dressage event, Uwe von Falkenberg is our nation’s greatest hope, alongside Wilhelm von Paulitch and Sven Dahmer. Each man is a member of the United Republics Armed Forces’ Marziger-Brigade, the only mounted ceremonial cavalry regiment in the military. The brigade performs at events across the country, and are masters of their craft. Johannes Gotz, another member of the brigade, is also considered to be a shot for a medal in the equestrian jumping event.

The biggest stars in Orean, however, are expected to be the gymnastics contingent. Gymnastics is one of the most popular individual sports in Siovanija, especially amongst women. The Olympia Athletic Club is by far the most successful of numerous athletic clubs in the country. While more famous for its football and hockey clubs (Olympia Borograd), the gymnastics club are the most successful in their field in the nation’s history, and have won countless medals at domestic championships. Every single competitor in the women’s gymnastics event comes from the club, and can be identified by their green track jackets. Anastazie Bartova, Eliska Tomanova, Madeleine Bott and Liliana Coufalova all have high expectations in artistic gymnastics, while Magdelina Lukasova and Mariana Kovarikova will compete in rhythmic gymnastics, also with high hopes. The women’s group events will also be ones to watch, as will Nadia Witting’s performance in the trampoline events. The men’s side shouldn’t be discounted entirely, either, as Denis Klapil, Vratislav Mihalek, Emil Heissler and Oleg Pavlicek are each ones to watch in artistic gymnastics. The focus in Orean for Siovanija & Teusland will be on the gymnastics events, and the goal will be to be standing at the very top of the podium.

There are a few other athletes to watch in Orean. Of course, Thomas Fischer will be back competing in the Men’s One Person Dinghy event. While he is four years older now, 32, and isn’t necessarily a favourite to medal here, what the Republica games proved was that you can never count Fischer out. He’ll be eager to defend his gold medal here. In addition, another hopeful is Elfriede Schopher, competing in the women’s shortboard surfing event. Surfing isn’t traditionally a strong sport in this country - the only real place it can be found regularly is Vrnovo and the Southern Islands. Schopher, originally from Stelburg, grew up spending summers in Vrnovo, and took to the sport quickly. She’s quite young, but already a star back home, and the 22 year old will be hoping for a medal performance in these games.

The Olympics will be close to home as well, in Southwestern Atlantian Oceania. The city of Istria, Banija, will also be playing host to the Olympic Games. There are several connections between the Games in Istria and our country. Naturally, of course, the United Republics enjoys a strong relationship with the Kingdom of Banija. The new Istria Olympic Stadium was also designed and built by Architektur Erhart-Palme, the world-renowned Teus architectural company that has also designed the Stadium of the Restoration in Banija, and the Franz-Gorz-Stadion in Stelburg.

In Istria, leading the Olympic team into the stadium as flagbearer will be Trude Spitz. Spitz has Olympic pedigree, having competed at the Republica games as well, finishing 4th with the women’s football team. She is also one of the United Republics’ best-known athletes, currently playing for Parrhesia United in the Nepharan Premiership, the premier football league in the world.

There are many medal hopefuls present in Istria. First off, there’s the archers. Liselotte Schierer won a bronze medal, the first-ever medal won by a United Republics athlete, at the Republica games - she’ll be looking to do even better here. She’s joined by a strong core that includes other medal contenders such as Ferdinand Starker in the men’s event. Boxing is another sport where there will be some expectations. Boxing is quite popular as a spectator and individual sport in the United Republics, and in the men’s heavyweight competition Zdeno Dragunov will have plenty of eyes watching him. That’s to be expected for all the boxers, however, with Elmer Landsteiner, Kvetoslava Kudlikova and Ingeborg Wolf other medal hopefuls.

Other areas of interest lie in the team events. The men’s and women’s water polo teams are decent, with the game enjoying great popularity in Siovanija and a professional league just starting out. While we can’t really expect a medal, with numerous other countries sending strong teams, water polo is a sport on the rise in this country and a good performance here could do wonders. The women’s indoor volleyball team, who reached the Quarterfinals of the World Volleyball Expo, will be another group to keep an eye out for - they’ll be hoping to go even further in these Olympic Games, with a squad made up of mostly the same players. And of course, there’s the football. The men’s team is made up of a mix of players from the Di Bradini Cup team that took home a bronze medal, as well as good young Republikaliga players. The women’s team placed 4th in Republica, and led by strong players like Isabelle Kruger, Eliza Stoeva and Trude Spitz will be looking to push on from that result.

There’s individual athletes to watch as well, with Franz Neumark (Men’s 100m Freestyle Swimming), Emil Specht (Men’s 100m Sprint) and Joseph Einhorn (Men’s Marathon) potential medal contenders at these games. In women’s beach volleyball, the team of Eleonore Stassen and Julie Mullen is our country’s best chance in that competition, while Klara Valentova, the 4-time Stelburg Open winner, carries our nation’s banner in women’s tennis.

All in all, these games are going to be ones to watch - and Siovanija & Teusland will most certainly be watching. An agreement was reached between RBC Sports, the national broadcaster, and RSN, the nation’s largest network devoted to sports, to form the Olympic Broadcasting Alliance. The two will therefore be sharing coverage of the Games, with RSN’s coverage centred in Orean and RBC’s centred in Istria.

Fans back home can expect recaps on the day’s Olympic events, profiles of athletes competing at the games, and other stories that have shaped these Olympians, such as profiles of certain sports and athletic clubs in this country. In addition, we’ll have full coverage as the city of Borograd prepares to host its share of the Games, the gridiron football demonstration event.

Finally, not only the athletes will be present at the Opening Ceremonies in Orean and Istria. There are high-level delegations from the Government of Siovanija & Teusland travelling to both cities. In Istria, President Magdalena Hoskova will be making her first official trip abroad to the Ceremonies, and is staying in Banija for a few days afterwards. Joining her in Istria will be the Minister of Infrastructure, Rudolph Klauberg, as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs Vojtech Horacek. Klauberg played a key role in securing the contract for AEP to build the Istria Olympic Stadium, and being tasked with this trip shows his continued rise politically. Heading to Orean will be the Vice Chancellor, Willi Strauss, as well as the Minister of Sport Elias Scheffler. In Borograd, Chancellor Dominik Meier will lead events celebrating the Games, as well as the Mayor of Borograd Boleslav Blezek as the city prepares for its Olympic experience.

In association with various other news outlets in Siovanija & Teusland, the Stelburger Zeitung is proud to be bringing you complete updates from the Games of the XIV Olympiad in Orean, Liventia and Istria, Banija. Let’s get ready to cheer on our Goldhorns as they make our nation proud.

It Takes a Village To Raise a Medallist

Blanco Borrayo reports;

An Olympic delegation can often be a unique mix of professional athletes who pull in tens of millions of dinaras in wages, sponsorships and endorsements deployed alongside practitioners of more obscure sports who constantly have to scrap together the funds to keep their sporting dreams alive. And for a nation that loves an underdog story, every four years it offers the chance for the folks back home to latch onto some unlikely tales of heroism. One such tale took place at the Eighth Summer Games, right here in Orean. Although the tale begins a few thousand miles away on the Sargossan island of Larissa.

The village of Pietra is just one of dozens of tiny nondescript population centres that lay throughout the island’s cattle belt. One of the village’s slightly more noteworthy inhabitants, largely thanks to a near impenetrable accent and fiery temper, was Sergei Ushekov. The Kyrin refugee had settled in the sleepy heart of Larissa after fleeing one of his homeland’s habitual internecine bouts of internal strife. After attempting to carve out a career as a personal trainer he eventually took up a post as a PE teacher at the local school. Tiring of the constant diet of football Sergei somewhat aggressively petitioned the headteacher for permission to alter the curriculum. Out went a tiny fraction of football. In came a little bit of wrestling.

‘We were pretty excited’, Pedro Aspas reminiscences. ‘We all enjoyed watching wrestling so it was a really big thing. Except this was much less big lads in tights being smacked over the heads with chairs and much more us being chocked unconscious. Once the parents got wind of it, it didn’t last long. But Señor Ushekov was a determined man so it became an after school club for the seniors. A few of us gave it a go. We were pretty hopeless. All except Marco of course.’

Marco Regal had a hitherto undiscovered natural aptitude. Which, when coupled with the enthusiasm that comes from being unexpectedly good at something was a potent mixture. Ushekov, recognising talent when he saw it, took it upon himself to coach Regal, regularly making the four hour round trips to Barahona to take his young charge to compete against the local scene. Such as it was. But with local competitions practically non-existent all that was left to the pair was a dramatic choice. The following year was an Olympic year and that presented an opportunity that was impossible to ignore. While the big sporting federations hoovered up the bulk of the delegation’s slots there was always a few places left open for the more obscure disciplines. Provided they could offer a display of aptitude, a monetary ‘donation’ (a Đ3,000 down payment and a further Đ7,000 to guarantee a place on the plane) and a well-placed advocate.

‘Señor Ushekov was like a dog with a bone’, Aspas says. ‘He was absolutely determined that Marco would be going to Liventia. He rallied the entire village behind him. We had a Village Fair to raise money. Señor Ushekov arranged for a wrestling demonstration. He invited anyone to step and grapple with Marco. They paid a fee and the winner took it all. It was like those old gladiatorial games. It proved to be a nice little earner though. Marco beat everyone.’

With funds secured Ushekov and Regal flew to Soluca to press their case at the Sports Ministry itself. Through sheer force of personality Ushekov somehow found himself in a meeting with the Minister himself. Warming quickly to a fellow grafter the Minister was quickly persuaded to sign on. And just like that Sargossa had its first ever Olympic wrestler. And the fans back home nearly missed it.

‘That was our fault’, Carlos Vera admits. ‘We’d never had a wrestler before and Marco simply fell through the cracks. I remember I was muddling through the taekwondo at the time. My day job had been updating the live scores for the website for the SuperLiga. But when the email came through about commentary positions at the Olympics I jumped at the chance. But I may have slightly exaggerated my knowledge of martial arts. I think the wrestling coverage at the time was just the pictures from the host broadcasters with arena sound and that was it. Then I heard a panicky producer in my ear. Not only was their a Sargossan wrestler in action but he’d also just won he’s first match. I was instructed to get myself over to the wrestling ASAP.

‘We’d got set-up just in time to see Marco lose in the quarter final. But after a lot of pouring over the schedule we realised that he was still alive in the repechage. I had a couple of thousand people with me as I somehow managed to string together commentary for a sport I literally knew nothing about. Marco won, it was amazing. It also meant he would be wrestling for a bronze medal. Then it happened. I had the message in my ear that we’d being going out live on Main2 [SargoSport 2’s live coverage]. My audience of four figures became an audience of eight figures. They got to enjoy me essentially relaying the score and the time. Two things they could clearly see themselves. It didn’t matter though, Marco had us all captivated.’

On that balmy night in Liventia Marco Regal defeated the Bulgislavian Essad Tuhan to claim the nation’s most unexpected of Olympic medals. It remains the only medal won by Sargossa in the wrestling. But as the Games head for Orean again the delegation includes eleven members of the wrestling team. Ushekov and Regal may have long since left the sporting stage but the legacy of what the achieved lives on.

Commonwealth to lead Parade of Nations in Istria
by Wendy Vandenboem
The Western Observer

Istria, Banija--The Opening Ceremonies of the XIV Summer Olympic Games will put an unexpected spotlight on the Baker Park team representing the Olympic Committee of the Commonwealth.

The Olympic Committee of Banija (OCB) approached the OCC to offer the place of honor at the head of the Parade of Nations, as a sign of the close relationship the nations share athletically, commercially, politically and socially; although it was not explicitly spelled out, it not a stretch to believe that the Royal Family--Kabaka Mwanga and Isebantu Mutungi, among others--suggested the possibility to show the multiverse the value both nations place on the relationship.

As these Games are being held in two nations in different regions & time zones, there will also be an Opening Ceremony in Orean, Liventia where the athletes competing in the events held there will march. The Commonwealth's contingent will be significantly smaller, with all of the smallest teams in the overall delegation--excluding the individuals participating in archery--having their events taking place in the Rushmori nation; Secretary of State for the Commonwealth Thomas Dixon will lead the official delegation representing Baker Park.
Jack Walton, the 125kg entrant in freestyle wrestling will be the flag bearer in Orean for the 65 members of the Commonwealth team involved in sailing, shooting, wrestling, diving, and gymnastics.

Meanwhile, Lucius Crawford--who will be making his second trip to the Olympics--will be the first athlete to enter the Istria Olympic Stadium; fighting as a heavyweight in Republica, Crawford has stepped up to the Super Heavyweight classification in boxing for these Games, which will mark the culmination of his amateur career that has seen him win 44 of 50 bouts while serving 14 years in the Army.

Swimming, Track & Field and Basketball will all be represented by larger team efforts; in the pool, the women's 4x100 freestyle relay team of Melanie Lauterback, Lorelei Friemark, Wendy Davis and Iris Gorman that won the country's only medal in Republica--Silver, in a national record time of 3:37.58--will be augmented by a stronger contingent across several disciplines both male & female.
On the track, increased depth in several events as well as new faces taking on uncontested opportunities from the previous venture should lead to reversing the disappointing results in the Free Republics.
The NBL provides a roster to see the men join their female counterparts in the basketball competition, and the FAC sends an all-female side to counter the men's squad that made the single elimination medal tournament despite not showing much potential.

KOC chief wants Kelssek Olympic Houses to welcome the world
AUGUST 11 | Brenda Miller in Istria, Banija

Image

The Kelssek Olympic Committee wants its hospitality houses in the two Olympic cities to be a statement of inclusion, global interaction, and environmental sustainability. Kelssek House Istria and Kelssek House Orean, temporary structures that have been set up with permission of local authorities, will be open to all visitors and admission is free.

“We want a welcoming atmosphere, a place for the world to mingle, that communicates our values and supports the Olympic spirit. I’m very proud that it’s something that conveys our country’s distinct cultures to the world,” said KOC president Eamon Horvath, who is on hand to cut the ribbon in Orean.

“Unlike other countries who segregate themselves away from others at the Olympics, we want to reflect Kelssek’s values of openness and inclusion. In doing so, we also uphold the Olympic ideals of bringing the world together through sport. This has been a consistent theme with the Kelssek Olympic House and it’s even more important now than ever.”

While some sections will at times be used for invited guests, the facilities will be open to the public for free admission at all times, emphasized Horvath. A reservation system will be activated to manage crowds if necessary; after previous iterations Kelssek Olympic House has gained something of a reputation as an after dark hotspot.

Robert Monesta, in his first major international trip as prime minister, will travel to Istria and is set to be the guest of honour at the facility’s opening ahead of the opening ceremonies. Foreign minister Rachel Francis will be travelling to Orean, and the two will switch places for the closing ceremonies. Attempting to give equal regard to Banija and Liventia, countries which are both seen as important diplomatic partners, is likely to see similar contortions from the foreign service and federal officialdom over the next few weeks.

The pavilions will have similar designs and facilities. Their construction reflects traditions of wood architecture in Kelssek and is intended convey the sense of a spacious country cabin. While this is what the boosterish promotional materials claims, there are few cabins in Kelssek that have an event stage accommodating 350 spectators, exhibition area, and a Kelssek Olympic Team merchandise outlet.

At an Olympics split between two cities on different continents, video booths will connect visitors in Istria to those in Orean and they’ll be able to chat with each other like they were in the same room. Olympic pin collectors will also be able to buy a souvenir from pin dispensers that will randomly vend one of six designs specially made for the 14th Summer Olympics, with three specific to each city.

Visitors will be able to browse an exhibition highlighting environmental conservation and the importance of protecting and restoring nature. Greeted by a green wall of local plants at the entrance, the exhibit showcases Kelssek’s policies and technologies that help to reduce consumption of resources. It also aims to show off environmental accomplishments like ending the use of landfills, province-level efforts to construct electric vehicle infrastructure and other measures to eliminate the use of carbon fuels, rehabilitation of former mining sites, and emphasizes the positive impacts for health and standard of living.

While this might seem incongruous given the involvement of aircraft manufacturer Celestar as a longtime KOC sponsor, the company has gamely omitted any petrol-guzzling imagery and will showcase its efforts to develop solar-powered and zero-emissions aircraft. The upbeat Celestar contribution to the exhibit insists that we need to connect the world without destroying it.

Eric Reinhard of the Gerualt+Grenn architectural firm who won the bid to design the project acknowledges the discordant note this might strike, but says the project is very much about current realities and what’s feasible now for a more ecologically sound way of living.

“I don’t think this is ‘greenwashing’ at all, it’s about overcoming this division that modernity has drawn between nature and people and the destructive idea of controlling and separating ourselves from nature. Also, the building generates more energy than it uses and construction materials will be dismantled and reused after the Olympics.”

The central space features food and beverage offerings including specialties like Salt Coast crab chowder, oxbont, the popular traditional Vanardian jerky, and creamy Akana pumpkin soup. The usual array of beverages with rotating beer taps thanks to the Independent Brewers Association and a selection of gins and whiskies from the Western Distillers Cooperative members will also be featured. Lord of Darkness coffee from the popular eastern Konoha roaster will also be available – though only in Orean as the sale of coffee is illegal in Banija.

An outdoor area will also be available for visitors to relax with their snacks, featuring furniture made from recycled canoe paddles and architectural installations that evoke a Conryian alpine meadow. Guests can do some slacklining or play in an inflatable snow globe, before patronizing the barbecue where an array of mushroom and meat skewers, mountain squash, and Etnier sweetcorn are on the menu.

And of course, the facilities will be bristling with screens showing live feeds of ongoing Olympics events and spectator areas where cheering for Kelssek will be gently encouraged.

Höll – Thing rift threatens Olympic unity

Crown Princess Kassandra of Græntfjall will be among the dignitaries attending the Opening Ceremony of the 14th Summer Olympics in Orean, the Grænthöll confirmed last night. The Höll sought to distance themselves from rumors that the Crown Princess had decided to attend Orean so as to avoid having to meet with Prime Minister Zóphonías Juliusson, an inveterate critic of the royal family, who had already confirmed his attendance at the Opening Ceremony in Istria, Banija, stating that the Crown Princess’s plans had been drawn up ‘well in advance of any news from the Prime Minister’s Office of his own itinerary’ and further that ‘should their paths cross’ (the Crown Princess is expected to put in an appearance in Istria later during the Games) she would be ‘charmed’ to meet with the Prime Minister.

Nonetheless, the split Opening Ceremonies does offer an opportunity for the Höll and the Thing, whose relations have barely risen above frosty since the election of the Left-slate government last fall, to skirt each other. “It would not surprise me if, just as the Crown Princess makes her way over to Istria, the Prime Minister finds himself winging his way to Orean,” noted Lena Ericsdóttir, veteran political commentator and host of the PoliticUnthinkable podcast. “It’s an open secret that [Crown Princess] Kassandra cannot stand Zóphonías,” she said. “And the feeling’s very, very mutual. So these split ceremonies are really a god-send for both of them.”

The Ólympíusamband Græntfjalls has avoided wading into politically dicey territory, saying only that it is looking forward to participation in both of the ceremonies equally and will extend a welcome to both sets of guests. Off the record, GOA officials have indicated they want to avoid at all costs any political headaches and concentrate on good sporting results. “Sing a song, wave a flag, and watch the pretty light show,” said a source with knowledge of the preparations. “If we can get through it without that decrepit old windbag launching into one of his bloviations about inherited privilege, we’ll probably consider it a success.”

Kaija Michaelsdóttir will accompany Prime Minister Zóphonías Juliusson (not pictured lol) to Istria

Other officials attending the Istria ceremony include Minister of Education and Culture Kaija Michaelsdóttir, the highest-ranking member of Left-slate coalition partners the Progressive Liberals, whose less-staunch views on republicanism, political reform and inheritance tax have arguably prevented more serious clashes between the Höll and the government from emerging. She called the trip an “opportunity to learn more about a different culture”. A sharp critic of Banija’s women’s rights record, she noted she would “not be seeking to proselytize” but that “obviously, some concerns remain, no matter how effective their sports hosting proves”.

Kalactanian Olympic Preview, Part 2

Handball
Events: 1
Top Team: Mens Handball
Overall Predictions: One of the best all around teams from Northwest Kalactin coming to these Olympics, we can look for them to be a medal contender from the start, with their main competition from the group stage being Electrum. They finished with a bronze medal last year, and hope to possibly upgrade that to a gold this year.
Medal Prospects: Mens Handball

Field Hockey
Events: 1
Top Team: We suck
Overall Predictions: We don’t talk about it
Medal Prospects: “Kalactin” “Field Hockey” “Medal”

Rowing
Events: 1
Top Event: Coxed Eights
Overall Predictions: an event that we don’t expect to do well in, but we could look at possibly making a breakout and doing decent in the first round of the coxed eights. They aren’t a great team, but this is an area the NKOC hopes to improve in the future.
Medal Prospects: None

Rugby 7s
Events: 1
Top Team: Mens Rugby 7s
Overall Predictions: This will be a team that can look to be a team that gets to the Knockout rounds, as they seem like one of the stronger teams in the world. They come in as number 13 in the world, after astrong performance at the Rugby 7s World Cup.
Medal Prospects: Not really, but maybe a QF

Sport Climbing, Surfing and Skateboarding
Events: 3
Top Athlete: Bobby Lee, Mens Combined
Overall Predictions: with all 3 of these being new events that the Kalactanians have never entered in before, it is very unknown how they look to preform in them. Sport Climbing has many string climbers from the Kyater and Jarrbergen Counties.
Medal Propsects: None

Triathlon
Events: 2
Top Athlete: Jason Ramirez, Mens Individual
Overall Predictions: This might be the event with the most hype around it for the Kalactanians, as they come in with possibly the best rounded team in the overall Triathlon Event. This may be one of our biggest medal winners, outside of Athletics.
Medal Prospects: Everyone

Tennis
Events: 2
Top Athletes: Luke Subdonez, Mens Singles
Overall Predictions: we think that this team will be a pretty mediocre one, as the Kalactanians don’t look very strong or very weak in this category. Luke Subdonez could have a nice run though, especially looking at his Tennis Tour performance.
Medal Propsects: Nope

Demonstration Events
Events: 1
Top Team: Mens American Football
Overall Predictions: It will be very interesting to see how this team performs against the world, as we aren’t fielding out top players right now, but still some that could make a mark on the international level. Probably around average.
Medal: no
AO Lacrosse Invitational 2 Champions
World Twenty20 Championship X Champion

Athletes Village, Istria, Banija

Dominika Lisicki looked out of her window at the University of Loyola. The room was like that at a lot of other universities: a large wooden desk took up a large portion of one wall, a single bed was tucked into the opposite corner. The morning sun filtered past the green and orange curtains onto the laminate flooring behind her. It was a little impersonal, but it reminded her of her time at university in Burges nearly ten years ago and that was enough to bring back fond memories.

Tennis wasn't as big back then in Mattijana. The domestic league was professional, but only in that players could earn enough to eat, sleep and pay the bills before having to move onto something else once they were finished. The NSTT certainly felt a long way off for everyone. Sipping her Banija-sanctioned coffee, she thought about how things had changed since that first Mattijanan team had ventured to Centralis for the opening Slam of NSTT4.
Just two seasons later, Lisicki had beaten Leo Garry and then Ricardo Toli to win that very same tournament, the first title of her singles career. She had backed that up with a couple of quarter-finals, a semi in Recuecn and another title, possibly the most cherished though not the most impressive, in her home city of Burges. In doing so, she now had enough money to fund the rest of her career and a fair stretch afterwards. More importantly in the long run, Mattijanans could now consider tennis as a serious way to spend their working life.

She walked up to the kitchen of the block she was sharing with some other members of the tennis team. Like a lot of other places in Istria, it was designed with heat, or rather cooling, in mind. Acclimatising to the warm and humid conditions from her relatively cool home in northern Mattijana had been a battle, but one that she and the block's unpretentious, but effective air conditioning system were slowly winning.

After washing her mug clean of any lingering coffee stains, she trotted back to her room and swung open the wardrobe. Next to the tennis kit she would be spending most of her stay at the games in hung her outfit for the opening ceremony.

Mattijana had become famous, or indeed notorious, for their garish colour choices at opening ceremonies, so Dominika was pleased that whoever was in charge this year had gone for something a little more understated. The designer, Max Oblak, had replaced the bright green found on the Mattijanan flag with one a couple of shades darker and used it on a neatly pressed Jacket and pencil skirt, worn over the top of an equally fresh white blouse. With heels out of the question for a group of athletes who largely depended on their ankles, a pair of brown flats sat in a box underneath. The choice added another subtle element to the outfit, but Dominika didn't mind. Waving a flag around in front of a world audience was already hard enough to do without making an arse of yourself.
"Just give it a few wafts, it's not as heavy as it looks" had said Mattias Burges, the other of Mattijana's medal hopes in the singles draw and a man who was fortunately unlikely to ever go anywhere near an opening ceremony flag given his career was well into its autumn. "Hey, you could even give it the helicopter round your head if you felt like it, the other nations need something to take the piss out of now our clothes are going to be relatively sane."

When the letter came through from the Mattijanan Olympic commission telling her she was going to be the Banijan half of the nation's flag-bearing duo, Dominika was surprised. Even with her success, tennis had nowhere near the same following as Hockey and many other athletes had fared better at past Olympics than she. That initial surprise had given way to natural excitement. Her success on the NSTT had clearly not gone unnoticed and that meant a better profile for her sport as well. Looking at the Olympic logo on the left-hand breast of her jacket sent another little smile across her face.

For now though, her attention had to be directed away from the now sunlit blouse and towards the plain blue training top she had been given for her preparation. With her solid hold on the world number one spot and increased expectation from back home, she needed to be up to speed and in the form of her life when she took to the clay in Istria. Anything other than gold could be seen as a surprise, even in a sport as unpredictable as hers.

Flag bearers named for Opening Ceremonies

Team Krytenia today named the athletes with the honour of carrying Celesta into the stadium for the two Opening Ceremonies, to be held later this week in Orean and Istria.

Leading the Orean-based delegation is shooter David Verdi. Krytenia's shooting team had more hoops than most to get their weapons to the Games, with Liventia's anti-gun laws meaning strict dispensation had to be given for them to get their guns into Orean. This, of course, after negotiating Krytenia's strict gun control laws to get them out of their own country in the first place. Verdi, indeed, was particularly buried in paperwork, as his rifle licence was due to expire whilst in the athlete's village.

Istria's flag-bearer, meanwhile, will be NSTT tennis starlet Sarah Dinsdale. The youngster from Noton, who has developed her game in leaps and bounds in recent months, will become the youngest ever Krytenian flag carrier at the tender age of twenty-two.

Special delivery after customs "brew-ha-ha"

An important part of Krytenia's mission to win medals in Istria is now in place, as a courier van full of imported Rejistanian coffee arrived at the Istria athletes village this morning. The 300kg consignment was held up in customs at Istria's South Moravica Airport for almost a week after being confiscated by border guards refusing to believe that that amount of coffee - which is banned for domestic use in Banija - was entirely for the Krytenian team.

It took a visit from members of the Krytenian Consulate - armed with statistics that proved that yes, Krytenian's really do drink that much coffee, to convince the customs officers to release the consignment back into the hands of the Olympic delegation. On arrival at the Olympic Village, the first crates were given a cermonial "guard of honour" by the nation's eighteen-strong fencing team. Istria chef de mission, Mark Palazzo, said that he was "glad that the final member of Team Krytenia can finally take its place in the village, and not before time".

Krytenia's football teams, meanwhile, had received their coffee rations some days prior; the smaller amount they brought with them didn't draw the scrutiny of customs. Hopefully the team can brew up a storm when the Games get underway.
"I revel in the nonsense; it's why I'm in Anaia."

Excerpts from Olympic Coverage on South Newlandia One (SN1)

JK: We have waited for years, and now, they are finally there. The 14th Summer Olympics, the first with South Newlandian athletes, will finally begin, very soon. We are sure spectators from all over the country are as excited as we are. The first South Newlandian steps in international sports have been quite successful, with, among other things, two consecutive appearances in the knockouts of the World Baseball Classic. But all of that is just childsplay compared to what we get to see now. It is finally time for the Olympics. I’m Jim Koolman, and this is South Newlandia One.
OJ: And I am Olivia Jones. We will be sitting here in the studio to discuss the results, but we will of course also talk to reporters live that the different sporting grounds, at least from all places with South Newlandian participants.
JK: But before we do that, Olivia, what do you think about Istria?
OJ: Well, technically, half of the Olympics happen in Orean in Liventia. We just often forget that because no South Newlandians compete there, so for us, the Olympics basically happen in Istria. Sorry, Orean. Istria is Banija’s biggest city, and it has a lot of history, and all of that. It’s great, they definitely have the resources to successfully host half of the Olympics, and I like the place. But you aren’t watching to get a history lesson or find out more about the semi-constitutional monarchy Banija is, you probably care more about the sports. If you want to learn more about Banija and Istria and their history and politics, and how to get there, what to do there, and so on,… (She trails off) Look it up on the internet, or something.
JK: Now, it is finally time to talk about sports. As is tradition in South Newlandia, we will go through them more or less alphabetically, or to be more precise, by the official list of sports. We start with the Athletics. Because that is so much to watch, we have two reporters there, welcome Manuela Newluck and Mike Smithers!
MN: Hello, nice to be here. We are going to be covering from the Istria Olympic Stadium, where all of the Athletic Events will be held, and we will try to evenly share the work with so many Athletes and Events.
MS: In fact, 67 of the 80 South Newlandian entries were for Athletic Events, but then, multiple athletes enter multiple events. Lincoln McGhee, for example, enters no fewer than five events.
MN: Another anomaly is Luca Harwood, who will be competing both in Triathlon and the Marathon. We are going to try and highlight those athletes that have decent medal chances, but of course, even athletes we don’t mention here may always become important, and potentially even win medals.
MS: Let’s get started with the men, and work through the women after that. In the 100 meter sprint, we already have our first medal hopes. Especially Benny Sutherland, but also Max Drew and Olaf Li might have a shot to get a medal here. The 4x100 meter Relay team, consisting of the three mentioned athletes and Jo Robson, may also be a medal candidate.
MN: Yeah, the sprinters will be very interesting to watch. There’s also the 400 meter event, and while these athletes maybe aren’t as strong as the 100 meter sprinters, Lincoln McGhee might have chances here. The big strength of the South Newlandian team is the 4x400 meter relay; they definitely have a chance here too, with Lincoln McGhee, Nico Richards, Clement Chase and Jai Finnegan.
MS: I mean, how could someone named Chase not be a fast runner? There are also South Newlandian athletes in all of the other distances and the 110m Hurdles, but to be honest, they hardly have a chance to really make something happen. Then, there is the marathon. Luca Harwood definitely has chances there, and so does Terrel Moose, but the real medal candidate is Gergor Jenks. He may be one of the athletes with the highest medal chances across all of athletic events.
MN: And the, there is the jumping. Ruben Pate may have okay chances in the High Jump event, maybe Ji Chavez is a small outsider for medals as well. Nick Patridge and Eugene Vu both are quite decent in the Long Jump, and both of them could win something on a very good day. That concludes the men, and we are now moving on to the women.
MS: Honestly, the women aren’t as strong in the athletics events, at least not in the running events. There is Isabel Haynes, with some small chances in the 100m sprint, and Vivienne Sheldon in the 400m with even smaller chances, but otherwise, not terribly much to see here.
MN: Not really, no. The 4x100 Relay team is good too, with Isabel Haynes and Vivienne Sheldon at the end, but not really a lot to watch in the Women’s events. We saved the best for last though, as there is one more event in Athletics; the Mixed 4x400m Event. With Tanja Yates, Nia Hartman, Nico Richards and Lincoln McGhee, that team might be able to reach the medals.
MS: That concludes it for the Athletics, we will be in Istria Olympic Stadium to watch them, and we will keep you updated. Back to the studio!
JK: Thank you two for informing us about the Athletics. We move on to Lucia Millher, who will be covering Baseball and Softball for us. Hello Lucia, what do you think about the teams?
LM: Yeah, I see two strong South Newlandian teams. We don’t know right now where or against whom the two teams will play, and luck of the draw will be always a factor, of course, but I see both teams going far. The baseball team is essentially the same one that reached the knockouts in the Classic a year ago, where they narrowly missed out on the Quarterfinals against the Haps, they later made the finals, and I just.. I mean, they were three outs away, they were so close, and this could’ve –
OJ: Yeah, anything else to add?
LM: What?
OJ: About the team’s expectations for Istria, and about Softball.
LM: Yeah, right. The baseball team wants to reach the knockout round, which is what the Elephants usually do. That won’t be easy, but they can do it. Have I mentioned that the Right Fielder, Fabio Ventura, is the flag bearer for Istria? He will lead the South Newlandian delegation, that’s pretty cool. The Softball team is relatively unknown. It just isn’t really a thing in South Newlandia, but it seems like we are actually quite good at it. The team also features Sophia Smiths, who had been playing in the Slam two years ago and was in the roster for the last Classic, and Sophie Lawrence, who was in the squad for the mentioned Slam. I think they’ll go far, I can probably tell you more about them at a later point.
OJ: Thanks Lucia, we now move on to the most important event, according to some. Brandon van Simonson, what can you tell us about the football?
BvS: Hello, nice to see you. Erm, yeah, the football team is quite good. They rolled out the top team to compete, they really want to try and go far. All the stars are here, which is pretty cool. It certainly will be a change from the simplified roster we had to watch at the CE recently. The competition is obviously super hard in football, but maybe, the team could get somewhere. As always, luck of the draw will be a big factor. I will travel with the team, and will keep you updated as good as I can.
OJ: Thanks a lot, Brandon. We now move on to one of the sports that may seem to be unimportant, but really aren’t. Marcus Marksman, what can you tell us about the South Newlandian chances in table tennis?
MM: Yeah, table tennis. Quite good chances, actually. In the Men’s singles, both Gabriel Forster and Teddy Hough have okay chances, but in the team event, they are joined by Loren Hough, the older brother of Teddy. The team looks very strong; they have potential to go far. For the women, there is Helen Berger, she is quite good to. Berger and Forster play together in the Mixed Team, that team should have very good chances as well. I’ll be here at Rukunbi Sporting Gymnasium, and I will keep you updated.
JK: Thanks, Marcus. Moving on, we have Jessica Libakra covering a rather strange combination of sports, with Beach volleyball and Triathlon. Jessica, can you tell us more?
JL: Of course, thank you. Both events will be played here at the Royal Banijan Air Force Base, that’s why I get to do both. In the Triathlon, the men will mostly be competing, with Luca Harwood being the only one with some actual chances. Laurel Austin is competing in the Women’s event, but I can’t really see her near the top. Still, the Triathletes shouldn’t be forgotten. Then, there are Victoria Hope and Cindy Summers, who will form an excellent team in Beach volleyball. Definitely keep them in mind, I can see them going far, as they are really good at what they are doing. I can see them reaching the medals. I will keep you updated, no worries!
JK: Thanks, that concludes the sports. The obvious question we are all probably asking ourselves now is, of course, will the South Newlandian athletes get any medals, maybe even some gold? The easy answer is “We’ll see” but it is much more interesting to talk about it, and speculate a little. Olivia, what do you think; any gold medals for South Newlandia?
OJ: Maybe, but I don’t think so. If they get any, it is probably going to be the Softball team; I just don’t see any other thing where we could be at the very top. I do think they’ll take some medals, but probably not a lot.
JK: I definitely agree. The sprinters and 400m runners all look strong, and there are multiple sports where something might happen. One last thing, Olivia, lets try to guess the South Newlandian medal tally. I’ll go with 1-3-4.
OJ: That sounds fun. I’m going to take 0-2-3.
JK: Stay tuned, for more Olympic coverage soon to happen. I’m Jim Koolman,
OJ: and I’m Olivia Jones, and you are watching South Newlandia One.

Note: All RP's this Olympics are a part of an ongoing TSPN Documentary about Olympic Events of the Past involving Taes, winning moments, moments of joy, etc. This is the beginning of Episode one of the A Team and a dream, The Story of the Taeshan Olympic Team (The Documentary)

"What did it mean to you to qualify for the olympics?"

"It was an honor. I had watched Brandon Wissinger win the first olympic medal for Taeshan, and I knew in that moment I wanted to be an Olympian. It was so incredible to qualify for my first olympics, to medal. To even be in the olympic village. Nothing will ever compare to that moment. Being one of the guys to make the team. I'll never forget that, my mom and dad hugging me, it was incredible" - Keegan Pontius, Gymnastics, Silver (Team) Novonaya, Silver (Pommel Horse) Republica

"It was a big moment. I cried, I cried a lot. My parents cried, my boyfriend cried. There wasn't a lot of dry eyes in the park. We weren't expecting much in the actual olympics, our Cycling team was so young then, but to win Silver in the Road Race. Brings a tear to an old mans eye" Kevin Smitt, Cycling, Silver (Mass Start)Aeropag IV.

"I qualified for a lot of events the first olympics, canoeing, Water Polo, etc. But the real one was the Walk. I have a lot of skills, but that was incredible, and then to win a Bronze. I just loved the event, and man it was incredible" Tyler Yokie , A lot of Events, Bronze (50 KM Walk) Republica

"Taeshan isn't known for its sailing. We're no Krytenia, so to have enough points to qualify for multiple olympics was incredible. Then I went to that last one not expecting anything, and then I had the sail of my life, and a silver. It was just incredible to compete on the stage, but a dream of a young boy on the water, became a reality on that day I first punched my ticket to the olympics" Horten Van Larsen, Silver (One Person Dinghy) Republica

"Going to the Olympics with the soccer team when I was a teenager made me into the player I was. Taeshan doesn't put the emphasis on soccer at the olympics as it does in say Volleyball, or Ice Hockey, but they still put a good squad of U23's together. It was an incredible experience. We weren't there to win, but man did we compete" Lydie, 2 Time Olympian

"My adopted country gave me uh...how do you say...many chances to play at an olympics? And BMX was my one true life? Love? And It was incredible to be one of the top, top 3 to qualify. Such a competition to get there, and really it was incredible. The experience, multiple times. Such a joy" Anastázia Rosseau, BMX (Gold) Centralis

"I was following in the footsteps of Jordan Kwanzaa. I wanted to set the olympic decathlon record and win gold for my country. between me and Andrew who would eventually finish with the Bronze we had two of the best Decathloners in the World, in one country. To qualify for the olympics, and be the second to set the Olympic Record from Taeshan. Those are memories we will always remember" Finnian Augustine, Gold (Decathlon) Zube

"Team Jumping became legendary after the Gold in Aeropag, so to represent that team multiple times, while we never did quite that level again, I had a good run. Representing in Emberton, and being able to win a second Bronze in Zube. It was incredible. Me and my horse had such a good ride" Xavier Angelfish (Equestrian Jumping) Bronze (Team) Emberton, (Individual) Zuber

"To be one of the best pairs of Volleyball players in the sand in Taeshan is incredible. I think this olympics is a great chance for us to have a medal again. We have done well before, and with this shot I will not be aiming up and missing my chance. We are a great duo, and winning the trials and advancing to this tournament... There is nothing to compare it to" Sean Talleta, 1st Time Olympian, Beach Volleyball

Olympics Matchday -2 --- Rener Fath and team fall short, Women rise up in Water Polo

Welcome to Olympics Matchday, your stop for quick Olympic information in Instria and Orean!

Today we have 2 matches. First lets talk about our Men's Water Polo's team first match against Sylestone.

Kind of sad. Sweizia Meroco had a good strategy going on, however our defence couldn't keep up with Sylestone's fast plays. They attack really picked up at the end though, dominating the late exchanges.

Yes. Rener Fath said today that they were "not downed by the loss" and that they "Will be motivated for the next match."

I'm sure this is quite true, look at how Burcos Saitas smiled after the match?

And how the Jovannic supporters cheered after the match.

Yes, I am interested to see what Sweiza Meroco can do for the next match.

Next, the Women's game.

Now that was a really exciting match. Back and forth all day!

Elen Ruge ruled the game today, wondeful fast shots by her. Definitely MVP!

Agreed. Tomorrow will be a new matchday, so more reviews from.....

Olympics Matchday!

Content Warning for this entire planned series that there will be transphobia and transphobic tropes littered throughout.

This includes in the cadence of 'acceptability' and presented unchallenged in a neutral light, and opponents of Trans rights as 'women's activists'. This is especially true in the following roleplay, which is inspired by the subtlety biased and discriminatory coverage of trans issues by The Times (a British newspaper).

They are not my personal views; transmen are men, transwomen are women and non-binary people are non-binary. All gender expressions are valid.

DE TELEGRAAF

Explained: Why the Saari Olympic Team has landed in controversy

OREAN - Three days ago, the TiemOlympik BondSaari touched down in the two host cities of the Olympics. Since then, they've been at the centre of a story which could be the scandal of the games and define the General Election campaign.

The source? A front-page interview with Equestrian star Elisabeth Hertogin in the Den Daags tabloid where she reveals that she underwent sexual reassignment surgery fifteen years ago. The resulting row has dominated social media discourse and even added a new dimension into the previously colourless general election. What are the issues at stake? Where are the battle lines drawn? And does any other it even matter. This is Elisabeth Hertogin's trans-row: explained.

Who is Elisabeth Hertogin?

Elisabeth Hertogin has had a quick rise to the top of the Saari Equestrian world - and is considered one of the greatest hopes for an Olympic gold medal. An all-rounder who has earned a spot on the teams for each discipline - dressage, show-jumping and eventing - she was previously unknown and uncontroversial. Her fantastic performance at the televised Olympic trials made her a minor-celebrity, especially as Equestrian is traditionally a sport in which The Sarian has excelled - winning nine medals in three Olympic appearances.

What has happened so far?

With this such a fast moving story, it has been hard to pick-up a consistent narrative. But this is the commonly accepted narrative so-far. Around six months ago, journalists from a number of publications were anonymously contacted that Elisabeth Hertogin was 'assigned male at birth' (the preferred term amongst the trans rights lobby for born as a biological male). Given the anonymity and lack of evidence, many - including De Telegraaf - opted not to follow-up on this story. Journalists from Den Daags did, and reportedly found an unamended birth certificate and other medical documents to prove the veracity of this claim. Hertogin was then approached, and decided to give an exclusive interview with Den Daags to reveal the story herself. This is a common tabloid tactic - allowing a more favourable story in return for greater access. Hertogin, now thirty-three, revealed in the interview that she had been living as a woman since a teenager, and had began the process of sexual re-assignment at the age of seventeen in a process which lasted "around six or seven years". She also revealed that many higher-ups on Ruiter BondSaari - the governing body of Equestrian sports in The Sarian - knew, but that most of her team-mates were unaware.

The story was the front-page the day the Olympic teams set off to the host cities. Hertogin was not pictured entering the Orean Olympic Village with her team-mates, thought to be brought in more discreetly to avoid the growing press interest in the story. Back home, the story was dominating conversation: a consortium of women and gay-rights groups and activists wrote an open-letter calling on TiemOlympik BondSaari to remove Hertogin from the team and for all political parties to do more to 'protect the sex-based rights of women and girls'. The competing rights between women to use single-sex spaces and the rights of trans people is one which has been bubbling under the surface for a number of years. Hertogin also received support from other LGBT+ pressure groups and the National Liberal Coalition leader, Matilde Vandebond, who called Hertogin 'brave and inspiring' on Twii.tur.

The calls for Hertogin to be removed from the team were rejected as both 'impossible' and 'unwanted' by Ruiter BondSaari. Who called Hertogin a 'fantastic athlete and even better ambassador for The Sarian and Equestrian'. Adding that she 'earned her space' and has the 'full support of everyone at TiemOlympik'. The veracity of this statement has been called to question, however, with member of TiemOlympik anonymously telling Bondnieuws Vandaag that they felt 'betrayed' and 'potentially unsafe' in the wake Hertogin's statement. Both of the other female athletes on the Equestrian Team - Wilaamina Kindvanwilaam and Maria Oudeur have publicly supported their teammate and brushed off concerns about the use of sharing a changing room with someone who was 'assigned male at birth'. There have been some other female Equestrians from competing delegations who are reportedly uneasy - and the Olympic Organising Committee have yet to make a statement, directing requests to the Saari Olympic Committee.

As Equestrian is a mixed-sex sport, there are fewer legal and regulatory sporting hurdles than if Hertogin was competing elsewhere - though activists on both sides of the debate have said that the Olympic Committee and other sporting regulatory bodies need to be clearer on the rights of Trans and intersex athletes to compete against athletes that they are biologically divergent from.

How has this affected the General Election?

Much has been written about how, with voting day now less than a month away, the General Election campaign has lacked any sparks. An anaemic economy coupled with the inability to deal with dual crises of the devastating fire in the working class Gilmortun area of Bondstad and the Tiegan Smid cash-for-access scandal has eroded support amongst the Florican's traditional base and they have been solidly behind Matilde Vandebond's Nationale Liberale Coalitie (National Liberal Coalition) for the entirety of the campaign.

This affair seems to have been the spark that the race has been waiting for, and Matilde Vandebond has been dreading: a wedge issue which is perceived very differently between naturally liberal voters in urban eastern seats, and rural and town swing-voters in the middle and west which traditionally hold the key to power. The National Liberal Coalition, who have been criticised by women's rights groups for their increasingly uncompromising position in favour of Transgender rights to use women's-only facilities, have been firmly on the side of Hertogin thus-far but grumbles from activists that they're allowing their 'broad-base campaign' to be dominated by a 'fringe, culture war issue' are only going to get louder if polls shift.

Coming out worse than the NLC are Links-Unitie (Left Unity). Where the NLC at least have a clear position, Left Unity - fifth in the current assembly but third in recent polling -have been left flailing with splits across the party. The Assembly Member, Berthe Kindvanjodi, has accused Tran-rights Activists of harassing her on Twii.tur after she expressed support for calls for Hertogin and other Transwomen to be excluded from women's only spaces - including the Olympic dressing rooms. Kindvanjodi had argued that allowing biological men into women's only spaces, such as rape refuge centres, poses a 'real and immediate risk to... women and girls'. Other members of Left Unity have expressed support for Hertogin, whilst the leadership has currently stuck to the line of deferring to both national and international Olympic governing bodies - angering activists on both sides of the debate.

The Nationaal Aczekuutiv (the Governing Ministry, literally National Executive) - currently a coalition formed of the Florican, Unijt! (Unite!) and Alliantie voor Groen-Socialisme (Alliance for Green Socialism) parties - have called on Hertogin to voluntarily withdraw from the Games and have called for a full review into her access to women's-only spaces during the Olympics. They have also attacked TiemOlympik Saari, a body independent of the government, for not making that undertaking them - saying that they have taken a "political choice during an election". All three parties have been similarly condemned for using the instruments of government to further their election messages, though everything has been technically allowed even during the Purdah period. Leonaad Bruin, the current Voorzitter-Aczekuutiv (Prime Minister, literally Chairperson of the Executive) and leader of the Florican Party has been the most vocal - hoping that this is the 'culture wars' issue which will win back the core and swing voters which elevated him to office four years ago, as well as winning votes from suburban women who have recently shunned his party.

There have been no major voting intention polls since this issue came to the discourse, but anecdotal evidence has suggested that Leonaad Bruin is the big winner of the row. A UGuv snap poll on the issue itself have found that a plurality of people believe that people born male should not be able to use women only spaces, and that Hertogin should not be allowed to compete in the Olympics. However, the poll showed that more than half of people either don't know or don't have an opinion, and the poll has been criticised as a leading question by some Trans-rights activists.

What comes next?

This issue is still very much in the air, and doesn't look to be going away anytime soon. This issue has got everyone, at least on Twii.tur, talking.; both camps seem to have drawn their battle-lines. Something only exacerbated by the deployment of the issue as a wedge in the forthcoming election. Pressure will continue to build on both political and sporting leaders from both sides: with accusations of transphobia and misogyny being thrown by the extremists. Whether Elisabeth Hertogin will be allowed to compete is not a settled issue - Olympic bosses may yet interfere in the row. And there is a real danger that this parochial Saari issue could ignite LGBT or women's rights activists globally - putting Saari athletes at the centre of a scandal in front of the watching eyes of the world.

Nobody knows how this will finish, but this isn't the start to the games that anyone in TiemOlympik BondSaari would have wanted.

All in a Day's Work
Reporting for V3 News Services, Rin Slakori

ISTRIA - By and large, Vekaiyu disappointed their faithful followers in the Thirteenth Summer Olympiad when it came to Water Polo. The men's team, flushed with success at digging themselves from the hole created by the opening loss to Neu Engollon, ran the table with the rest of their division in order to earn second seeding from Group A. They then routed Ethane and narrowly defeated current co-host Liventia, only to fall to West Phoenicia yet win out against Main Nation Ministry by a final of 10-7. It didn't go exactly as planned - many anticipated that Vekaiyu would face off in a rematch against Kelssek, where the rival nation took the gold on Vekaiyun home soil in what remains one of the most-watched televised matches in the vulpine nation's history. Oddly enough, however, Kelssek did not make an appearance among the final four. Even odder still, the Vekaiyun Women's Water Polo team couldn't eke out a victory in the round of 16. They would be sent home early, a common theme among promising Vekaiyun Water Polo squads. The men's team, despite its talent and early successes, for instance, hasn't captured a gold since the Tenth Summer Olympiad in Electrum - which happened to be their opponent for today's games.

"We're called the 'lunch-pailers' back home," reserve center Yiisu Kamariseri reminded V3 News Services. "We're called that since we're not exactly flashy in the water: [we] don't have what one would call a star player or anything like that. We just clock in, clock out, work together, and win the match. It's not like the teams from years' past. We do it differently, and it feels different, I think."

Indeed this isn't the team of years' past, which were more reliant on high-octane offenses and speed to get the job done. With the dismissal of storied coach Tomaso Ingloteri two years ago, the philosophy of the team changed and the rudder of thought was moved by incoming manager Ives Velestrovi. This new team, which seemed to feature a large contingency of players from the western side of the nation, quickly adopted a new line of thought: ignore the numbers, win at all costs. The "lunch-pailers" was a term coined by a sports writing group from Sevinire in reference to the industrial sector and its working class, hard-nosed rhetoric that is common in that area of the nation. Nothing fancy, nothing exuberant, just getting the job done, and winning ugly at all costs.

Case in point: the first game of the Olympiad. No scorer had more than two goals. As a matter of fact, those who typically "ride the bench" ended up with more goals than the starters. And goalies were switched partway through despite the fact that Vekaiyu had a three-goal lead, a lead they would maintain for the duration of the match.

"It feels good to get the first win," keeper Reko Severu put it. "The last time it felt like we were always playing from behind, and things just didn't get off to a strong start. Now? It feels like a relief, especially since we beat one of the better teams in the division."

Leading goal-scorer (tied, actually) Viktor Suvalri had different things to say. "We're focused this year. Focused not really on ourselves, but on the nation. We know that since underwater hockey isn't on the ticket this year, more will be watching us. We don't want to do those back home a disservice."

The women's team, which features a more classical attack pattern expected by Vekaiyun teams of old, did not participate today, being the odd-one-out in a group of seven. Much is expected from their group the same as the men's, as Vekaiyu in it's nine-year history of participation has managed four golds, four silvers, and two bronzes.

Postby Sargossa » Wed Aug 12, 2020 5:40 am

The sun shone down brightly on Sisonke City Park, where knots of dark blue donating Sargossan fans happily mingled with the locals and neutrals who were getting an early fix of Olympic action. This was the second of a triple header held in the stadium that day and the heat of the day perhaps went some way to explaining why the action on show couldn’t exactly be described as a classic.

Sargossa had taken the lead from the penalty spot before a freekick gave the opposition the chance to equaliser shortly before halftime. It was quite some way out but the Planers, suitably enough, opted to roll the dice and the ball pinged into the far corner via an unfortunate deflection off the wall. On the touchline coach Arturo Bauzá looked pensive. Dropping points in the opening match wasn’t disastrous, in what was one of the larger qualifying groups, but it didn’t really do to give Kelssek too much of a head start. Kelssek, in both specific football terms and in Olympic pedigree in general were the name in this group. Their senior national side had dispatched Sargossa in the World Cup qualifiers with a contemptuous ease and their Olympic side had already handed out a 4 – 1 drubbing to Græntfjall earlier in the day. They put on a very impressive hospitality house too.

Beside Bauzá was Lela Lafuenté, forwards coach for the Olympic side. Lela’s name was indelibly linked to the Olympics as it was she who had scored the goal that took the unfancied Corsairas to the final when the tournament had last been held in the co-host city Orean. Although Atlantian juggernauts Valanora would ultimately prove too strong in the final the side’s silver medals easily eclipsed anything their male counterparts had achieved at the Summer Games.

She too would have been proud of the moment of skill shown by forward Carla Mayoral, whose exquisite dummy fooled the covering defender all ends up, create a shooting opportunity. There was still work to be done, just inside the box to the right of the ‘D’, but with remarkably little backlift Mayoral fired in an effort low and hard across the keeper. The keeper did get something on it but such was the power she couldn’t prevent it billowing the back of the net. And just like that, two days before the official opening of the Games, the Corsairas were on the march.

Olympic Diary

OK: Hello, I welcome you to the "Olympic Diary" program, where we will describe in all details what is happening on XIV Summer Olympic Games in Liventia and Banija. My name is Oleg Kalugin and I will be the host :). The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games will take place tomorrow, but the qualifying rounds have already begun, mostly in team competitions. Now I will give the floor to Eduard Nazarovich, who oversees water sports.
EN: Thank you, Oleg. The group stage has already begun in water polo competitions for both men and women. Only one match has been played so far, so nothing can be said with certainty. For now, we will work with what we have.
OK: OK, so what about the results?
EN: Well, I'll tell you about the results. West Phoenician team in a rather tense struggle beat the team from The Grearish Union 6-5, and in the same group F, one of the hosts of the Olympics, Liventia, drew with Ko-oren 9-9. The team of Farfadillis scored the most among men, which in a meeting with Npc West Florida scored 18 times against 5 from their rivals. Among women, it is worth highlighting group C, in which 2 out of 3 matches ended in a draw, only a team from Siovanija and Teusland managed to win. For women, teams from Vilitan Union and Sirian scored the most. They scored 14 goals against Sylestone and Royal Kingdom of Quebec respectively.
OK: Well, which match did you like the most?
EN: I liked the match between Græntfjall and Kriegiersien in men's group A. The game was incredibly interesting, the team from Græntfjall won with a score of 11-10.
OK: To be honest, some country names amused me. For example, Fraglia-Cox. I am tempted to pronounce the second part of the name of the country in an inappropriate way in English. *laughed*
EN: Yes, it's funny, but you shouldn't be kidding too much, otherwise they will think that we are making fun of the country. And yet, this is a competition of many countries of the multiverse, the names of the countries can be very different. Okay, goodbye, Oleg.
OK: Goodbye, Eduard. Our team does not participate in water polo competitions, but where the Waisnorians will compete is in tennis, albeit in men's competitions, and today the competitions among single women have begun. Marina Mastovich is watching tennis at the Olympics, hello, Marina.
MM: Hello, Oleg. What can I say - already in the qualifying round there have already been several very interesting matches, for example, the meeting between Anise Milon from Ancharmunn and Catalina Santoy from Farfadillis. It ended in favor of Catalina with a score 3-6, 7-6, 7-9. Also quite interesting can be called a match between another native of Ancharmunn - Jane McLean and representative of Hannasean Federation Elsa Moore. The first set, in which Jane won with a score of 7-6, promised a tough fight between the athletes, but in the next two sets Elsa won a convincing victory - 6-2, 6-1.
OK: Which match surprised you the most?
MM: This is definitely a match between Turoala Muubab from Vilitan Union and Heather Severs from New Waldensia. The first match ended in victory for Turoala: 6-4, but in the second set Heather simply destroyed Turoalu 6-1. It was not clear who would win, and the third set did not clarify the situation, but at the end Turoala snatched the victory 8-6. On this I say goodbye to you, Oleg.
OK: Thank you, Marina. Now I will talk about what will happen Today. Yesterday the athletes from Waisnor did not participate in the competition, but today the first athletes from our country will come into play. Boxer Gennady Lebedev will start his performance in welterweight, and tennis player Alexey Pustozerov, who showed himself in NSTT, will most likely start his performance in the men's singles tournament. And of course, tomorrow there will be two opening ceremonies at once in Istria and Orean. On this I say goodbye to you until tomorrow.

TENNIS: A. Piper's lament

To have your dreams of Olympic glory crushed is a heartbreaking moment. For this to happen before the cauldron is even lit, however, is an even deeper pain. Sadly, though, that's the fate of tennis player Athena Piper in the women's singles.

It could have been so much different for the Stanton native. Piper dominated the first set, breaking opponent Emily Wang twice in a six-two demolition. Wang, though, was not to be denied, and came out all guns blazing. As the games fell to the Sarian-based player, poor Piper seemed to almost wilt in the Banijan sunshine. The Krytenian recovered in the deciding set, but a costly double-fault at three-all and 15-40 did for Piper, and Wang held serve to win six-four and advance to the next round.

Thankfully, Piper is not yet done with the Games. She teams up with Georgia Bassett - who negotiated the prelims with a three set win of her own - in the women's doubles. Let's hope that her luck holds a little longer in that competition.

FOOTBALL: Ponti secures the points

Vekaiyu may be a nation where the term "fox in the box" is more literal than most, but it was a fox of a different colour who proved the difference in Krytenia's opener in the women's football competition.

In a game where chances were at a premium, Foxchester's Maddie Ponti struck with a cruelly curving free kick to seal all three points for the Dragonesses in what could prove to be a tough group. Captain Janet Sutherland also excelled, marshalling the defence and stifling any hope of an equaliser from the Vixens.

There are bigger challenges ahead - the men's senior team will quite readily inform their female counterparts how difficult an opponent Baker Park can be - but Krytenia will take this result and run with it for as long as they can.

WATER POLO: Hands and Nees the difference

Water polo is not a sport you tend to associate with Krytenian success - apparently, though, our women's team aren't quite ready to subscribe to that particular midset quite yet as they won their group stage opener.

In an entertaining back-and-forth encounter that will hopefully endear a fair few youngsters back home to the game, Krytenia and Electrum served up eighteen goals between them. It could have been more, save for some excellent stops from Tina Fellaini to deny Electrum on several occasions.

In the end, Julia Nees proved the crucial cog in the Krytenian machine, scoring four of their ten goals. It would still be a shock for the Sky Caps to qualify from their group, but this result does increase that slim chance a bit further.

Krytenia's men's team, meanwhile, couldn't replicate the success of their distaff counterparts, going down ten-six to the well-drilled side from Benjamin Mark.

More excerpts from the Olympics Coverage on South Newlandia One (SN1)

LM: For those that have just tuned in, we are seeing the first South Newlandian game of the 14th Olympic Games. South Newlandia is facing Vekaiyu in Softball, and we are already in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Vulpines from Vekaiyu were certainly an unfamiliar sight, but the South Newlandian women are still cruising to victory. As you can see, they are leading 5-1 after six innings, and it doesn’t look like that would change any time soon. Right now, the South Newlandian women are batting again. Sophia-Rose Hopkins was just struck out, and here comes Sophia Smiths. She usually plays baseball, but she seems to have adapted to softball very well. She hit a home run earlier this day, the only one we saw so far. That was just a ball, but that is a decent hit, it’s not caught, and Sophia Smiths makes first base. Very good, that’s very good. Sophie Lawrence is next; she usually plays baseball too, it’s kind of weird to see them play so well in Softball too. That is strike one. We knew the team coached by Xavier Fraser was good, but we didn’t expect them to do so well, either. That’s a ball. The team is completely dominating Vekaiyu right now; the Vulpines barely got anything together at all. Strike two called. At this rate, the team certainly has good chances to make the Round of 16; realistically, they’ll need to finish second to do that. That is a good hit, that’s a very good hit, going deep into Left Field, it’s not caught, Smiths and Lawrence are running. That was a double, so second and third a loaded now. That’s Very good. Izabel Weeks is coming to bat now; this is a chance to make the win basically certain. Just one out so far, the team is in very good shape today. That is called a ball, I’m not so sure. Melinda Li clearly did good work for the team; the batters are in great shape, currently 13 hits in six innings and counting. There’s a first strike. Whichever way this goes, I have scheduled an interview with someone from the team for later, I hope we have screen time for that. Oh, Izabel hit that pitch perfectly! It’s flying, can it be stopped? The ball is flying far, again over Left Field, and it is a home run! That’s three more runs to the South Newlandian team, we are 8 to 1 now, and this has got to be over. The Softball team will record a first win, brilliant, very nice. My name is Lucia Millher, you are watching South Newlandia One, and we are going back to the studio!
JK: Thanks Lucia, we will get back to you in a little bit. Let’s head to Brandon van Simonson first, though. Brandon, can you tell us anything about the group draw for the Olympic Football tournament?
BvS: Of course I can, Jim. The South Newlandian national football team, the Elephants, have been drawn into Group 14. That means they play their group stage matches in Eastern Stadium in Rukunbi, very close to the rest of the events. They will face the teams from Fraglia-Cox, Vdara, and Siovanija and Teusland. We do know very little about the team from Fraglia-Cox, but we know about the recent success the Vdarans had in multiple tournaments. We don’t know their exact lineup yet, but speculations claim they will once again bring some kind of youth players. We don’t know too much either. Siovanija and Teusland is obviously the favourite hear, even though they compete mostly with younger players. They will be the team that gives South Newlandia the most trouble. Because of the format, seven points are basically required to advance, and realistically, you might need all nin of them. The Elephants certainly can’t afford to slip up at any point.
OJ: Thanks Brandon. We will follow the football games with great interest; after all, it’s the most important sport in South Newlandia. Some Olympic success there would be fantastic, but the group does look fairly hard. Well get back to Lucia Millher now; has the game ended yet?
LM: It has, and the South Newlandian softball team defeated Vekaiyu 8-1. No further runs. This means that the team is off to a great start, and keeps all of their chances to advance into the Round of 16. To do that, they’ll need to finish second in their group if possible. I’m standing next to Xavier Frasier, the coach of the Softball team – Mister Frasier, what can you tell us about the remaining games?
XF: Yeah, I think that going 4-1 in the group stage is almost required to have a good shot to go far. That will not be easy, but after today, I’m a little bit more confident we can pull it off. The group doesn’t look easy; I think the game against Taranima, who are playing for the Teremaran Unified Team, might be the hardest opponent, even though they lost their first game to People's Republic of Xabia. Overall, if we only slip up once, we should be good to go. We are preparing already for game two, Diarcesia won’t make things easy for us, but I think we can beat them if everything goes right.
LM: Thanks for that, Mr. Frasier, and good luck going forward.
JK: One more thing, Lucia, can you tell us about the South Newlandian group in Baseball?
LM: Of course I can. The Elephants were drawn into Group 2, and will get to play their games in the Rukunbi Diamond Complex in Istria. That’s not perfectly convenient for me personally, because the Softball team plays almost an hour away, but yeah, I’ll make that work. The baseball groups are kicking off at the same point the softball team plays their second game, but the Elephants won’t play right away, as they are having a bye in the group of five.
OJ: Thanks, Lucia. The Olympic Opening Ceremony isn’t far away anymore, but will soon be real. The flag bearer for South Newlandia has been announced, it will be Fabio Ventura, the Right Fielder of the baseball team. What do you think, Jim, was that a good decision?
JK: There were many plausible choices here, I’m sure. They could’ve taken Trischuk, the football captain, they could’ve taken Helen Berger, very good case for her, she plays fantastic table tennis. They could’ve taken the Beach volleyball players, they are both great. They could’ve taken Sutherland from the sprint. Lots of other options too, like Irving and McMora from football or Larsen or Conroy from Baseball, too. To be honest, I don’t know how I’d have chosen with so many options on hand.
OJ: You know I’m not the biggest Ventura-fan, and I’d have loved to see someone from Softball, like Smiths. But I can see why they wanted to take a Baseball-player; it simply is the one thing South Newlandia has had any success in so far. And Ventura is the top-scorer. I understand the decision.
JK: I like Ventura. I think he’s worthy of being the flag bearer, after two good Classic’s in a row.
OJ: Do you think we can get Ventura for an interview?
JK: Maybe. He doesn’t do them often, like, not at all, but maybe we can talk him into one.
OJ: In any case, that concludes our coverage for today. Stay tuned, these Olympics will stay exciting, that’s for sure. I’m Olivia Jones,
JK: and I’m Jim Koolman, and you are watching South Newlandia One. See you soon!

(OOC: Just a bit of fun, no ill-will intended!)

Article posted on the GTV.græ/olympics website.

What’s In A Name? Typos Abound As Olympic Quals Underway

Typesetting errors have seen multiple Græntfjaller athletes at the Summer Olympics competing on the first day in uniforms featuring errors. Græntfjaller women were particularly affected, with all 11 members of the women’s national football team taking to the field in kit that rendered ‘-dóttir’ as ‘-dóttir’. Meanwhile, the national trigram patches distributed to all athletes read ‘GRÆ’, rather than ‘GRÆ’. Embarrassed Ólympíusamband Græntfjalls quickly rushed to blame the manufacturer they had contracted for the Games, Cabañas Calligraphy, for the shoddy workmanship. “We issued clear instructions and are very disappointed they have produced a frankly embarrassing series of errors that have seriously marred our athletes’ first day of the Olympic experience,” said chef de mission Göpf Vernerisson.

A Cabañas Calligraphy spokesman Zuǒjiāng Shūr-e Pā’īn, said the blame lay with laborers in their typsetting plant, located in the Export Processing Zone in the Græntfjaller South Indies. “We apologize for the error, but rest assured, harsh corrective measures are already underway.” That news should please Crown Princess Kassandra, who arrived today in Orean to news of the errors bedeviling competitors in Istria, and confirmed that “some form of punishment” for the workers involved would “not be inappropriate given the embarrassment caused”.

The so-called ‘12-14-16 factories’ (so named for the average age, life expectancy, and daily shift hours of the workers) based in the GSI-EPZ, which have fueled Græntfjaller economic activity in the past decade have become “places of idleness”, said the Crown Princess as she made her way into the five-star hotel in which she is to reside during her stay in Orean. Sipping from a champagne flute during a cocktail reception at the Græntfjaller National House, she added: “The beatings will continue until morale – and spelling – improves.”

    Image
Celina Marcsdóttir, one of the affected athletes, put aside the controversy to power through her opening game

A misspelled nametag proved no major obstacle to Celina Marcsdóttir, the 4th-seeded Græntfjaller ladies tennis player who cruised through her preliminary round play-in against Quebecois Eugenie Banks in straight sets. The only individual Græntfjaller athlete in action on ‘Day -2’, Celina brushed off being the only Græntfjaller to have to go through the first qualifying round in fine style, hitting an excellent first serve percentage and twice breaking Banks, the second time to win the match with a neat passing backhand drive. Afterwards she was similarly dismissive of the supposed controversy: “When I was that age, I had a little trouble with my spelling, too!” she joked.

In a less cheery mood was Ketilbjörg Aunosdóttir, women’s football captain, after their 4 – 1 drubbing at the hands of Kelssek. Arinbjörg Björnsdóttir’s late headed goal came after Eva Karven, twice, and Cassie Silverton, had scored to give the experienced Olympic side an unassailable lead at the tournament opener in Sisonke City Park, and a bitter welcome to full internationals for the Snow She-Wolves. Karven would score again to complete her hat-trick before the whistle put Ketilbjörg’s side out of their misery. “We weren’t distracted by the uniform issue,” she said at a terse post-match conference. “We just weren’t good enough.”

It was also a day of mixed fortunes in the pool. At the Albert III Aquatics Center, where the Aqua-Wolves claimed a squeaker of a win over Kriegiersien in their opening game, but at the Northern Moravica Water Fitness Center in Herzegovina City, their She-Wolf counterparts went down (not like that) to Lovisa. Noah Ratosson scored three goals for the men and Maximilian Vígþórsson was 4/4 on sprints won, but Segol Tellsson said the biggest victory was “that they didn’t kill us”. Arngerður Léosdóttir was the stand-out performer for the women with 3 goals, but Stephanie Felixsdóttir conceded a costly 5 meter penalty within the last two minutes to give Lovisa the chance to snatch a win.

Sounds keen
If you're like me and enjoy the Olympics, you'll be thrilled to hear that I have a stash of such news! I, #53, a.k.a. the 'Lucky 7' has just learned the outcomes of the first Diarcesians to have competed in the XIV Summer Games!

4:01 PM Update: Time is of the essence. I need to prepare an immediate trip to the Games. If it's confirmed that my pet I-Ki has indeed been found, I won't have time to waste on the way. I will be flying into Orean for a quickie. All worst case scenarios are accounted for.

The water polo and softball teams are off to a good start after convincing wins versus their opponents. Will they keep up the momentum? And in tennis, Suvi Simms and Milene Harman passed the preliminary hurdle, with only Minnie Agnihotri under the Palaeodiarcesian banner falling short.

In the case of Harman, Hapilopper and Wreckeria's Marsha Bardsley turned out to be an even match for her. After winning one set each, Harman eventually took the edge and refused to concede a point in the third set.

Well, that's it! I'm very excited on how we perform as the games progress! See you soon!
