World Cup of Hockey XL - Everything Thread

Postby The Royal Kingdom of Quebec » Sat Jul 25, 2020 1:20 am

Welcome to the 40th World Cup of Hockey!

Dear 48 nations, hundreds of players and millions of fans. Welcome to the Multiverse's greatest hockey competition. The competition once again returns to Atlantian Oceania, but from Southwest to Northwest, as 48 nations look to prepare themselves ahead of their battle for glory, victory and achievement. Will Cassadaigua, the defending champions whose run was described by many as both unbelievable and remarkable, be back for the back-to-back WCoH Title? Or will it be your nation who races against insurmountable odds to clench the trophy before your eyes and nation cheering?

Of course, the best way to increase your team's chances of success is to post a roster and regular roleplays. If you are unsure what these should look like, look at others' in this thread and read the Guide to Sports Roleplaying. If you are unfamiliar with the sport, reading about How Hockey Works should help you write a realistic RP.

Welcome to Quebec for your World Cup of Hockey - with an XL Experience!

Transportation

To arrive in Quebec you'll likely just want to fly in to the city that you will be playing in. Both Montreal and Quebec City have an airport that serve most major airlines, include including the giant Quebecois duo of Spiritair and Aeroquebec groups. The likewise goes if one wishes to arrive in Quebec by port, or international train, with both having international services available (OOC: Please let me know if you need any arrangements).

While travelling inside country, there are main methods you can use for this. Various levels of services exist per speed, route and also the overnight availability (this option remains very popular in Quebec), and they are also extremely punctual/on-timerelatively punctual compared to other methods (one or two-hour delays are better than what you'd get in other options, with this bad of a weather), popularcramped (best option out of any right now) and frequent (one train per 30 minutes, with more coming due to demand), making it a very cost-effective and attractive option. Even with such situations the services in Quebec National Railways (QNR) are high-quality and well-maintained, so don't worry about your comfort while riding trains.

As for Montreal-Quebec City services, both cities are connected to one another by train service once every 30 minutes:
  • Quebecois Train Express (QTX) - High Speed Rail - 0:50 - 26x Daily between Montreal Saint-Pancras and Quebec City Reneegrad
  • Velo - Medium-Speed Service, Daytime services - 1:30-45 - 14x Daily between Montreal Saint-Pancras and Saint-Lambert, and Quebec City Reneegrad and Cheongnyangni Stations
  • Nightstar - Medium-Speed Service, Nighttime services - 2:00-2:30 - 8x Daily between Montreal Saint-Pancras and Saint-Lambertm and Quebec City Reneegrad and Cheongnyangni Stations

Languages

There are three official languages in this nation: English, French and Korean. All 3 languages are taught in school curriculum and with great depth, causing most of the population to be at least trilingual. Additionally, in this part of the nation there are some other First Nations languages being recognised as regional languages and are used+learned to great depth in schools, so please note this when you're RPing in Quebec. Most Quebecois you'll meet are at least fluent in two of the languages and that will show with way they speak.

Money

The national currency of Quebec is Quebecois Pound, with the exchange rate of $2 NS for 1 Quebecois pound. With the nation being rich with huge economy, almost everyone will have at least has a good deal of money here. So please don't feel surprised if the products are much more expensive here than back home, excluding alcohol and certainly marijuana.

Things you'll need in your stay, prices in NS Dollars (NS$) and Quebecois Pound (Q)

- Hotel: NS$50-400, Q$25-200
- Public transport in both cities: NS$2-6, Q1-3
- An one-way ticket between Montreal and Quebec City: NS$8-40, Q4-20
- Average cost of food: NS$6-34, Q3-17
- Sports tickets: NS$40-600, Q20-250
- Bottle of water: NS$8, Q4 (Sale of bottled water itself is extremely limited, with public fountains providing very low interest for the people)
- Alcohol: NS$10-100, Q5-50 per keg
- Public phone: NS$2 per 5-minute call, Q1 per call

Cuisine

Quebecois cuisine has evolved through centuries of social and political change. Originating from dominant Korean and elegant French cuisine that came with settlers, as well as materials and existing food of the First Nations living in the area, Quebecois cuisine has evolved through a complex interaction of the natural environment and different cultural trends and is the best mix of it all.

Quebecois cuisine is largely based upon rice, other diverse kinds of grains, vegetables, and meats(in this area moose and caribou, and to rare cases bears). The meals are noted for the number of side dishes (banchan) that accompany steam-cooked short-grain rice. It varies on the personal preferences but often in every meal they eat at least some form of maple syrup, Kimchi and/or bread. Commonly used ingredients include sesame oil, doenjang (fermented bean paste), soy sauce, salt, garlic, ginger, pepper flakes and gochujang (fermented red chili paste). In this part of the nation, fish are caught off the rivers and lakes to be eaten in whatever the way one prefers as well.

Ingredients and dishes vary by region to region, with many. Many regional dishes have become national, and dishes that were once regional have proliferated in different variations across the country. Meals are regulated by cultural etiquette, which are very hard to follow for even the average Quebecois due to all the processes they take.

Feel free to ask me for any questions if you have any in mind.

Religion

Quebec is a religiously diverse country, though divided when it comes to dominant regions. In the cities where the World Cup of Hockey will be hosted, First Nations' religions are widely practiced, with Quebecois Catholic Church and Buddhism right behind. Due to these differences, all three levels of Government keeps some separation from any religions, though they still hold some influences in those levels and receive lots of funding. It is also not recommended to argue about politics or religion in Quebec, as political and religious apathy is not really a thing for the Quebecois people.

Laws

Culturally and socially, Quebec is in bit of a mix. Another handy chart will be in place to explain some of Quebec's laws in place:

Recreational drugs: Legal, though selling them without a provincial licence can lead to up to $10,000 in fines and 5 years in jail.
Hard drugs: Illegal, with punishments up to $50,000 in fines and 5 years in jail for possession and consumption of the drugs.
Prostitution: Legal. People won't be talking about it, but will nod along. That said, any form of human trafficking involved will come up with minimum 25 years of jail time.
Pornography: Legal, aside from child pornography (applies to any pornographic videos or anything else starring people up to 18 years of age). Possession of child pornography will land you straight in jail for 7 years, while production and distribution of it can lead to potential death sentence. So, don't try it as it's a big no-no.
Legal age for tobacco: 18
Legal age for alcohol: 14
Maximum BAC to drive: 0.03.
Saying the word 'Coconut': Legal

All the foreign citizens caught under the Federal and/or Provincial law will not be extradited, unless of a special order given by Christine II and the Prime Minister.

Host Cities

In celebration of the 40th World Cup of Hockey being hosted on the homesoil, and to tie back to the history of Quebecois hockey and sports as a whole, the cities of Montreal and Quebec City were selected to host the playoff stage of the World Cup of Hockey XL.

Located in middle of Central Quebec, the City of Montreal is the largest city in Quebec. Founded in year 1554 as the meeting place between the indigenous peoples of the area and the rapidly expanding kingdom, the city evolved from a collective of small communities into an active trading centre for the Quebecois merchants, the government, and the neighbouring Semars.

Then, as the kingdom expanded to incorporate almost all of its current territories (and South Detroit), as well as expanding into other territories to form the Quebecois Empire, so did Montreal as not only did it become the economic centre of the Quebecois Empire, but also the place of many contrasts that's come to be remembered for all its faces in the industrial revolution and the Age of Quebecois Empire. This is also when its famed nickname, the 'Blue Smoke', came up, with the city's been part of the latest industrial developments and until about late 1800s the latest buildings, when the building bylaws were introduced by the nouveau bourgeoisies and the nobility. Not to mention the Korean-Quebecois Romanticist movements that had come up as the expanded access to the Interrealm Portal had resulted in a particularly strong fervour of sentiments in the country.

The city, however, also had its down moments- the city was struck, in chronicle economic depression between late 1950s to early 1990s, with particular sense of dreariness, the grime and the loss that caused Montreal to be remembered for its particular brand of rock music and the musical theatre in the West End, but it all seemed as if its fortunes, unlike the other major cities in the country who had gained vibrancy during this period (Kingston, Halifax, California City and Winnipeg being among those), were dwindling quickly.

By the 1990s, however, the Quebecois economy had finally started to climb up, and with the previous decade's successful industrial switches to banking and other tertiary sectors of the economy once again, as well as the contemporary cultural scene that had drawn many eyes back there again, and since then it hasn't looked back. Having taken back the economic reins from Quebec City and Kingston, Montreal is once again, the economic and contemporary cultural capital of the nation.

Today, Montreal is the largest city in Royal Kingdom of Quebec with 7.4 million people residing in the city proper and 10.3 million on the Montreal Province itself. Given its particular economic and cultural note, Montreal has been remembered for being more cosmopolitan and the left-wing of the two metropoles compared to Quebec City. This is reflected in particular with the ethnic diversity of the city's immigrant population the past two centuries, who have come largely from various parts of the Multiverse. It remains the home to about two-fifth of the nation's 100 largest companies, as well as 4 of the 7 nationwide banks in the country (Bank of Montreal, Banque Centrale, Royal Commonwealth Bank) and the Montreal Commonwealth Exchange (MCX). While it has its own shares of skyscrapers, especially on the South Shore, and parts of the West and East Ends, the Downtown Proper still maintains most of the facades from the 1700s-1800s.

Sure, the 'Blue Smoke' has way too many attractions for a humble being like myself to list from, so I'll only mention a few. The downtown core, where the industrial age buildings lie, hosts many journalism outlets, dozens smaller museums and two universities (Farrer, widely regarded as one of three top schools, and Iggulden, for its own fine arts and cinema institute). On the west side of the downtown core, which ends on Paddington and Windsor stations on the west end, lies the West End District, which has been the home of one of the Multiverse's best theatre scenes in both drama and musical theatres. In the middle lies various financial buildings, the odd ten-story skyscrapers, hotels and a couple of sporting arenas here and there, as well as the Silver Garden, home to the Regimbault and Shingoryeo Symphonies and various railway museums that border the Royal Cross and Saint-Pancras stations. Saint-Pancras station is where the international travellers from Semarland and beyond - all the way to or from Baker Park via East or West Transcalanian Railway Line- familiarise himself with. Then, on the east end, lies the famous Arlenia and Koreana West Districts. Home to the past centuries' working class and college students who live on rent-controlled apartments and houses, this was where much of the people's history were discussed, held and executed. With its vibrant nightlife scene on the Arlenia Side of the South, and Koreana West District where Jewish-Quebecois and many Quebecois of Commonwealth origins have made their homes after their arrival in late 1800s, the eatery culture is particularly well established there.

Sporting-wise, Montreal hosts almost every sports league in the country with at least a franchise, though none is so famous as Montreal Koreana itself. Founded in 1875 as an international Korean-Quebecois organisation that aims to put 'soul and body' in mind with athletics, education and servitude to the Quebecois State and the Crown, Montreal headquarters of the Koreana Society has become one of the nation's two premier pan-sport societies as well. While having a historically famous club branch in almost every sport league, Montreal Koreana has been known as of late for its dominant hockey, men's volleyball and women's basketball programs.

For the course of the playoff stage, there will be 2 arenas used in Montreal area. The main arena, located in the Koreana District of Montreal, will be Montreal Forum, on the northeast side of the city. Home to Montreal Koreana's hockey and men's basketball team, it is about 15 to 20 minutes drive from the Downtown and one to five minutes away from the selected hotel(s). The other arena for the tournament, agreed by both Hockey Quebec and Quebec Hockey League, was will be Calania Place. Opened in 1886 as the oldest professional hockey arena in Quebec, it has been the home to Montreal Calaniens, widely regarded as the 'other Montreal team' since their founding in year 1903. With its convenient location, it is practically within walking distance of the entire Downtown, as well as the city's four of five major train terminals (Paddington, Royal Cross, Saint-Pancras, Windsor).

Just 215km northeast lies the other co-hosting city in Quebec City. Located at the midway point between Fleuve Saint-Henri and the mouth of the River to the East Sea, Quebec City is the nation's capital and widely viewed as the 'Soul of the Nation'. Founded in 1504, this was where the Pierre Henri I, the founding monarch of the Jeong House, established the kingdom on a treaty between the indigenous tribes of the area, and named it 'Quebec City', a Neo Hanyang, on the meeting place of all forces of power. Like with Montreal, Quebec City quickly grew as did the Quebecois nation and subsequently the Empire, as Quebec City was the heart of the country where the intelligentsia argued about its identity, the nobility about how to survive and evolve in consistently changing world around them, and the foreign interests looking to take part in their own missions.

As the Quebecois Empire peaked in mid 1800s to early 1900s, the finest legacies of the era were often said to be 'built on Montreal, Kingston and Halifax's might, the reach of the Quebecois National Railway Company, and flowered in Quebec City'. That's why what we remember as Quebecois fin-de-siecle, one of the finest periods mentioned in history, literature art history textbooks, are so heavily focused around the city itself. Unlike Montreal, where the romanticist and ideological movements were based more around nationality and also the class, philosophical and political movements continued to remain more abstract and existential in the 'Northern Paradise', guarded by Universite St. Croix's famous Seongyoongwan University College and its constituent colleges, as well as its cafes, sporting venues (horse races, polo, Taekgyeon Sseuireum were lot more common back then) and salons.

There was for a period of time, especially in the 1940s-1960s during which the Capitol, partly due to the divide between Quebec and Novopetrogradian Soviet Union that brought temporary cold war before their reconciliation, as well as the Post-wartime euphoria, had seemed to be frozen back in time. Unlike Montreal, however, Quebec City was able to maintain consistency in its own significance as both the Palais Royale, the Parliament and the house of all four Quebecois pillar religions (Buddhism, Anglicanism, Catholicism and Indigenous Religions) remained in the country (not that it was gonna leave anyway), and with innovative urban planning processes, Quebec City has become the seat of relevance it sought on own.

Being the heart of Quebec, the 'City of Eternal Lights' is a traveller's paradise as hundreds of museums and monuments form the city. Among them, the most popular ones are the Commonwealth Museum, the Garam Museum of National History and Northern Calania, as well as Sainte-Victoire Gallery and Royal Gallery of Quebec. The Royal Quebecois Ballet and the Quebec Philarmonic Orchestra, two largest among hundreds of classical arts organisations, are hosted in the Royal Richard Hall and Pavilion Bakhmeteff. While the nobility and haute bourgeoisie usually stays out of public celebrations and events, the city's force majorite is usually out in many festivals that dot the city's calendar - the most famous being QBC Proms that mark the city's summer. For those who come here to see some of the royal history of the city, they would also be encharmed by the Palais Royale, Sandringham Abbey and also Arlene and Richard Museum that do their best to explain the fabled history of the royals.

The Quebecois sports teams usually host at least one home series in the nation's capital's various state-of-art venues, most notably so with The Reneegrad, the new temple of Quebecois football. CSKA Quebec, the other pan-sport organisation in the country, is the major draw here (and in many sports, the only draw, due to its developmental system that incorporates the entire city), and it is cheered by Her Majesty too!

With the city's dreams, glooms and love all reflected its boulevards and the Capitoliens themselves, Quebec City welcomes the visitors for a swell time in the fortieth World Cup of Hockey. As for the arenas themselves, Colisee Royale is located on the Alexandre IV District of Quebec City, just 5 minutes walk away from Bibliotheque Nationale de Quebec on east and 10 minutes west of Parc D'Armistice, the largest urban park in the Downtown area. This is where CSKA Quebec, the second winningest team in QHL history, plays. Just last June, it was here where the home team defeated Kingston Knights in Game 7 of the Prenneau Cup Finals, to bring it back to the nation's capital.

In the meanwhile, Colisee de Levis, is located just south of the Fleuve Saint-Henri, in the city of Levis. Widely regarded as the industrial, port neighbour to Quebec City (the other southern neighbour to Quebec City, Reneegrad, is a much tamer city of its own with its own major terminal and lots of middle class households), Levis remains important in Quebecois manufacturing industry as it has been the past two hundred years. The arena itself, located on the Downtown Levis and just next to Choe Doo-Gwan Dreampark de Levis, is home to Levis Athletic, a historic QHL team with labour class origins dating back to 1920s.

In Kayangan, not all its citizens can participate in the sport of Ice Hockey, only selected people such as children of nobles or rulers and big merchants are allowed to play. So they agreed to try their luck in the World Cup of Hockey XL this time and they also got big sponsorship from state-owned conglomerates such as the Kayangan Investment Corporation, Perlombongan Artaruna Raja and others.

Flekefjord National Team
Image

National Info
Flekkefjord is a small nation of 19,024 tucked away in Rushmore. Hockey is a very popular sport that almost the entire population plays growing up. They are a pretty self sufficient nation despite their small size. Some of the largest imports that come out of the country are from the mountains of the nation, which are home to mines rich in Coal and Steel. Flekkefjord is very much a socialist nation, and because of the small size, they need to equally distribute supplies to all citizens, especially during the freezing cold winters. Tempatures tend to be around 10 Degrees Fahrenheit during the winter and 50 during the summer. The National Stadium holds 5,000 people, and all National Team and Professional Hockey games take place there. Many jobs include Working the fishing boats, mining and working with the government to supply the nation with the necessary resources to live. Almost the entire team from the World Juniors will be returning for the National Team this year, and we are excited to see how they play during the 40th edition of the World Cup of Hockey.

Home Rink: Bank of Sarzonia Arena, Nicksia, Benatar, Sarzonia (18,090 capacity)

Coach: Paul Bremerton, 48
Assistant Coach: Joe Crosson, 58
Goalie Coach: Pete Peeters, 57

ROSTER
GOALTENDERS (starter in bold)
32 Jacob Parsons, 24, 5-foot-10, 175 pounds
Uses a butterfly style and quick reflexes to make up for inexperience with positioning. Suspect puck handling. Bremerton is starting him because of his preternatural calm.
39 Yuri Evgenikov, 31, 6-foot-3, 230 pounds
Provides veteran depth in the event of any calamities and uses a stand-up style in contrast to the two butterfly style goalies.

DEFENCEMEN
First pair
3 Erik Weinert, 32, 6-foot-2, 190 pounds. First alternate captain.
Hard hitter, can pitch in on the power play, but usually isn't the point man with the man advantage. Provides veteran experience in addition to his bruising style of play.
5 Jill Sanders, 24, 5-foot-7, 150 pounds
Certainly not the first woman to play for the Stars, but she's certainly the scrappiest. She willingly goes into the corner to scrum to win pucks.

Second pair
6 Mia Chretién, 33, 5-foot-8, 145 pounds.
Can move the puck in and out of the zone well. Sometimes used on the front line during penalty kills.
7 Erik Weingart, 29, 5-foot-11, 200 pounds. Second alternate captain.
He's there for both hitting and leadership on the ice.

Third pair
18 Jack Bradley, 34, 6-foot-3, 205 pounds.
Size, speed and hard hitting make him a feared defender to go up against. Has worked on conditioning and strength to make his way back to the team.
52 Kirk Stephens, 24, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.
Stephens is the offensive defenceman on the Stars, and often lines up as a right wing on the penalty kill. He's a threat to score a shorthanded goal.

Seventh defenseman
14 Chris Walton, 26, 6-foot-3, 195 pounds
Can sometimes play on the fourth line or a penalty killing forward if needed, but he's also an at-home defenceman.

FORWARDS
First Line
LW 8 Sylvan Turcotte, 34, 6-foot-1, 175 pounds. Captain.
Lefty shooter with the hardest shot on the team. Led his league with 58 goals in 72 games.
C 38 Nate Barnes, 26, 5-foot-11, 189 pounds
Best faceoff guy on the Stars, winning them at a 62 percent clip last season. Second in the league with 78 assists in 72 games.
RW Matt Davies, 24, 6-foot-2, 190 pounds
Lanky and fast, also with good puck movement skills, but can be relatively easy to get physical with.

Second Line
LW: 13 Cameron Granato, 34, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds.
A righty shooter even though he plays left wing. Provides some scoring punch for the second line
C: Alyssa Hannigan, 24, 5-foot-7, 149 pounds.
A great puck distributor, she often features as the first or second line centre on the power play.
RW: Calan Leftwich, 25, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds.
Plays well enough on defence to be on the checking line, but his offence keeps him on the ice in offensive situations. Could double-shift to the fourth line in case of injury.

Third Line
LW: 15 Jeff Tucker, 30, 5-foot-11, 179 pounds.
Has the versatility to play any of the three forward positions offensively, but his defence is suspect.
C: 16 Colin Yarmouth, 22, 5-foot-8, 175 pounds.
Plays a sparkplug style, but is still working on the conditioning and stamina needed to play on the first two lines. May not be able to play long minutes in extended knockout round overtime sessions.
RW:24 Ray Olendorff, 32, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.
Plays harder than most. Is now much improved in conditioning, but meshes so well with the third line that he only plays on the other lines in knockout stage matches.

Fourth Line
LW: 25 Alan Donald, 37, 6-foot-1, 215 pounds.
Sarzonia's designated enforcer, led the league in penalty minutes 11 of the last 13 seasons. Has the national record for most PIM.
C: 26 Cliff Sauerchuck, 29, 6-foot-4, 230 pounds
His checking and physical play are what have him playing fourth line centre, but his ability to win faceoffs and distribute the puck are why he plays centre.
RW: 44 Terré Sombulier, 23, 5-foot-10, 170 pounds
They check well, and cleanly. That's why they're fourth line.

A lot has changed for Sarzonia's national ice hockey team since it was eliminated in the group stage of the previous World Cup of Hockey, even though most of the roster is otherwise identical to the team that competed in the previous edition.

For one thing, goaltender and unofficial team spitfire Matt Peterson hung up the skates again. This time, he decided that chasing a title wasn't worth the time away from his family. Kate would have to remain the only person in the family with a world championship. She was also the only one in the family with her jersey number retired.

That meant Jacob Parsons would be the unquestioned starter in goal for the Stars. Normally, that wouldn't be much of a big deal but with Parsons's mental health struggles in the previous World Cup, the fact that Yuri Evgenikov is the only goalie on the roster is a question for coach Paul Bremerton.

"We're trying out potential third goalies in the event we need someone," he said. He said Parsons' mental health struggles had nothing to do with the decision."

"I generally like having three goalies on the roster just in case," he said. "Matt's retirement was a killer because he's always a veteran presence, but he didn't want to spend any more time away from his wife and kids."

Parsons said he received ongoing treatment at a mental health facility in Delaclava and gave the staff high marks.

"They were great," he said. "I feel confident with the support I've gotten from them and continue to get."

The Stars were competitive in their return from a lengthy period of isolation, but they couldn't "pull a Sarzonia" on the ice the way the football team did. To wit: the senior Sarzonian national football team qualified for the World Cup proper in just their second World Cup Cup back and defeated eventual world No. 1 Banija and world No. 2 Nephara during the cycle.

The Stars will stay with a largely veteran team, choosing to gradually incorporate younger players rather than blow up the squad the way Sarzonia's lacrosse team did. The team's quarterfinals defeat cost Stars coach and lacrosse legend Carter Whitlock his job.

Bremerton said the Stars would be ready for the opening faceoff no matter who they lined up against.

"We have a long way to go to get back to where we want to be," he said. "That road begins tonight."

Team name: Græntfjall
TLA: GRÆ [GRF when not available]
Demonym: Græntfjaller
Team nickname: Ice Wolves

Kit: White with blue detail and blue socks; alternate is the reverse. Because all Græntfjaller names are patronymic, players typically have their first name on the backs of their shirts.

Coach: Kolbein Ölversson
Assistants: Lenny Nicklassson, Gido Salvarsson

Lacking experience at international level and having little squad practice team since getting the players from the end of the playoffs, the coaches’ expectations are appropriately low and have mainly focused on adapting to international rules variations.

Squad: A 22-person squad has been named for the tournament.
  • The Græntfjaller Hockey League (GHL) is a small league, but rivals the GPL (football) for popularity in terms of the national sport.
  • Græntfjaller players tend to be on the bigger side by [human] standards, and very physical, fore-checking and back-checking with equal vigor. But this means ttrading off for speed and most are not skilled puck-handlers by international standards. They hit a lot of one-timers.
  • GHL rules are laxer on charging, cross-checking, and shots to the head than international rules.
  • Fighting is a basically unknown phenomenon in the GHL.
1. Tom Finngeirsson (Laafjörður) – G
2. Felix Arvidsson (Kangasdorf) – D
3. Kristoffer Rudisson (Ilsburg) – RW [A]
13. Vígþór Patrekursson (Ilsburg) – G
19. Florian Alexandersson (Ilsburg) – C
20. Þorkell Magnþórsson (Mühlrich) – LW
31. Noah Skúlisson (Mühlrich) – RW
39. Auðunn Friðlaugursson (Akurgarten) – LW
42. Hallgeir Eyðolvursson (Laafjörður) – D
45. Aapeli Guttisson (Harmersgrunn) – G
54. Samuel Theodorsson (Kangasdorf) – LW
61. Finn Guðleikursson (Akurgarten) – RW
64. Luka Gunnersson (Hinteram) – C
68. Jack Jokulsson (Kangasdorf) – C
71. Sigurfinnur Salómonsson (Ilsburg) – LW
77. Þórlaugur Skíðisson (Laafjörður) – RW
79. Iivo Torkildsson (Kangasdorf) – D
84. Florian Sigurfinnursson (Kangasdorf) – D [C]
87. Bjarnleifur Asgeirsson (free agent) – D
89. Fabian Toresson (Mühlrich) – D
96. Guðmann Svanbergursson (Laafjörður) – D
98. Jónsteinn Sæmundsson (Laafjörður) – C [A]

Lines will be flexible and adjusted over the course of the tournament but provisionally:

GK1: Tom
The teenage phenom, a 6’3” hybrid-style goalkeeper, burst onto the scene this season, dminating in the net for a team that didn’t quite have the offense to deliver the wins his performances deserved. He’s young and untested at international level, but has a couple of experienced heads on the bench behind.

D1: Florian – Iivo
D2: Felix – Bjarnleifur
D3: Guðmann – Fabian
7th: Hallgeir
League champions Kangasdorf supply the entire first defensive line, providing the team with a succession of big, heavy hard-hitters. The rest are mostly even bigger, even heavier, and even harder-hitting, but Bjarnleifur – fleeing relegation-bound Schwakirchen and looking to become the first Græntfjaller to play overseas – is by far the best two-way player.

L1 (L – C – R): Auðunn – Jack – Þórlaugur
L2: Sigurfinnur – Jónsteinn – Kristoffer
L3: Þorkell – Luka – Noah
L4: Samuel – Florian – Finn
Despite Akurgarten stuck in mid-table mediocrity, Auðunn led the GHL in scoring, while Jack skated rings around everyone. The former is a bruising sniper, the latter the only player with any real speed or puck-handling skill. Younger and less experienced than the defensemen, the offense is still big and slow by international standards.

My opponent, if they RP first, may do the following:
Choose my Scorers: Yes
Choose Scoring Events: Yes
Godmod Scoring Events: Maybe, ask first if you have something unusual planned
RP Injuries to my Players: Yes, but let me determine the severity
Godmod Injuries to my Players: Maybe, ask first and let me determine the severity
Godmod Other Events: Maybe, ask first

A note on penalties: Græntfjallers will probably be perceived as dirty players by international standards, but they are not intentionally out to inflict cheap shots, but rather used to league rules that are laxer on checking. Most could not even spell ‘concussion protocol’.

A note on fighting: Græntfjallers will not initiate fights. Please do not RP my players initiating fights, ever. That said, if someone else starts a fight, they may respond. Most should be physically able to handle themselves; I don’t object to you RPing your players ‘winning’ fights but don’t have them mop the ice with mine.

A note on pictures: Please do not use photographs of RL people/teams/stadiums and say they are my players/team/country.

Arenas:

For the first – ever – international games hosted on Græntfjaller soil [ice?] the arenas of the top four clubs in the GHL have been chosen, with champions Kangasdorf earning the right to go first. Gunzlach, football champions but not boasting a strong hockey side, nonetheless host a game as a result of playing at the Grand National Arena. Græntfjaller arenas are safe and well-constructed, if rather boring. Small allocations of tickets for visiting fans will be available. (You can RP fans coming to the country for games if you wish, but please do not RP acts of violence in Græntfjall without asking me first). Three of the arenas [VHA, IBA, and GNA] are located in the capital city, while the WMM Arena is in the industrial heartland of the country. Laafjörður play out in the western hinterlands in the least accessible and least tourist friendly of the host communities.

WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY SEES BEARS RETURN

ROYAL KINGDOM OF QUEBEC -- The fortieth World Cup of Hockey is set to begin Wednesday in the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, and for the second tournament in a row, the Fluvannian National Team will be participating. The location may be new, but the goal remains the same: finish their group as one of the top two teams. The groups are still being drawn, so it cannot yet be said where the Bears will be playing, nor against whom, but now that the team has some international experience under their belt things should turn out a bit more favorably than last time.

And what of last time? In their international debut, our squad managed to scrape by to a record of 2-2. All things considered, nothing to complain about, especially considering their group had the #3 team in the world at the time. Success came incrementally; in their first game, they were shut out. In their second, they managed their first international goal. In their third, their first international win. Finishing that tournament ranked #27 in the world meant that the team will carry at least a small amount of clout going into this tournament, itself composed of 48 teams.

And let us not forget the competitions that have transpired in the meantime. The Bears, along with their parent organization the Fluvannia Hockey Federation, were the host of the first Conservative Hockey Cup in June. a 3-2 record in group play, coupled with a loss in the "play-in" game, means that the team keeps its head above the water of a losing record, but only just. This must change if the Bears are to have any hope of getting any further than last time.

Fortunately, most of the team from WCoH 39 are returning, and bringing their experience with them. Those that are not returning are being replaced by a pair of faces from the Under-20 team, who distinguished themselves with their performance at the 14th World Junior Championship, as well as their play in the Fluvannia Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

The Ko-orenite league cracked down on fighting to speed games up. Don't be surprised if the Dragonflies don't respond to a call to arms. Ice hockey is a small sport in Ko-oren, limited to frigid Aerellen, the temperate (but cold) northeast, and parts of the unwelcoming west coast. Venues are limited, and Aerellen's largest venue hosts multiple games per day while the season is on, so speeding up games and keeping them plannable is key. Languages used by the team are Dutch and Aerellen (Ko-orenite). Aerellen names are easily recognisable, they start with vowels, featuring many Au, Ao, Ai, Ae combinations at the start of each word.

The team is very much defence-first, or rather, defence-only. For the first time, the team features players who play regularly abroad: Aiamalod and Nedergard, who transfered to Donnacona after the last World Cup. The pressure is mostly on them: is foreign play (on a professional basis) really that much better than our own amateur/semi-pro setup? For other positions: the goalies are young but somewhat proven. The defencemen are always in the right position, but not always physically overpowering (especially going further down the lines). The wingers are either fast or technical, but rarely both. Autibel and Hermanszoon are easily the more productive ones. Mirre and Haarstad, as defensemen, both possess a mean shot from distance. For centres, accuracy and enforcing counts, in which Buck is probably the strongest of them all. Eriren is a little more elegant in his ways and much better on the puck (or deflecting it). Nedergard and Aiamalod count as the stars of this team, all things considered.

All players not already playing for foreign teams are for sale, and are willing to play in high level professional teams.

Siovanija & Teusland National Hockey Team

Nation Name: United Republics of Siovanija and Teusland
Short Names: Siovanija and Teusland, the United Republics
Demonyms: Siovanijan, Teuslander/Teus
Governing Body: Hockey Siovanija and Teusland
Colours: Blue, gold, white
Anthem: ‘High Mountain Skies’
Highest Domestic League: Ehrenliga
Nicknames: The Goldhorns
Style Modifier: +3

Coach: Aaron Kuhn (Stelburg Kaisers)

Aaron Kuhn is back behind the bench for the Goldhorns here at World Cup of Hockey 40, the 6th Cup for him as coach of the national team. With Kuhn at the helm, the Goldhorns have risen from unranked debutants to the 5th ranked team in the world, and one with hopes of coming home from this tournament with glory. There’s a solid amount of turnover on this roster since World Cup of Hockey 39, and while some of the key players remain, it’s time for a new era for this team. It’s Timo Schlager and Edwin Ranger’s team now, those two players having been members of the team in the past now moved up to key roles. Young blood joins them, such as three members of the Goldhorn team that were World Junior champions in Stelburg, Aleksej Knejz, Leon Goss and Evgeni Tomic. This team will be the classic Goldhorns: a fast team, skilled on the puck, but tough to match up against physically. With the Goldhorns having reached the Quarterfinals in WCoH 39, and the Semifinals in WCoH 38, there’s hope that the team will take the next step in WCoH 40.

Forward Units

First Forward Line

RW -- Razvigor Tsvetanov -- Admirala Pomorie -- 27y/o -- #19
C -- Timo Schlager -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 25y/o -- #97
LW -- Frank Heider -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 26y/o -- #16

If there’s any line to most look forward too as a Goldhorns fan, it’s this one. Two of the best snipers in the Ehrenliga, paired up with it’s best playmaker in Frank Heider? This line is going to be dangerous. Schlager won the Anatol Weisz Trophy last season with 109 points, as he led Marlesee to the Strauss Cup title - managing 10 points in the championship series. An explosive skater, he can blow by anyone, and is capable of pulling off incredible skills with the puck. Frank Heider has some of the highest hockey IQ in the league, and is one of it’s best passers - and his chemistry with Schlager can’t be underrated here. When you add in Razvigor Tsvetanov to the mix, a player who just loves to play hockey and scored 56 goals last season. He’s a big man, and isn’t afraid to get into the corners or battle in front of the net. Don’t let him get an open one-timer, as the Goldhorns will be looking to do whenever they have the power play.

Second Forward Line

RW -- Torsten Bohm -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 27y/o -- #12
C -- Edwin Ranger -- Stelburg Kaisers -- 24y/o -- #34
LW -- Alex Schnyder -- Teufelsberg Devils -- 31y/o -- #7

When the Ehrenliga’s top goalscorer, and the first player to hit the 60 goal mark in 7 years, is on the second line, you know you have a solid team. Edwin Ranger has always been a star player in the league, but this season he truly broke out, hitting 60 goals in the last game of the season. He also won the Wolf Bleich Trophy as the league’s most valuable player, and led his Kaisers team all the way to the Cup final, where they lost in 6 games. Ranger is best known for his wrist shot, which is considered one of the best in the league, as well as being big and hard to push off the puck. With him on a line is Alex Schnyder, another great forward who has been a key part of this national team throughout its history. His one-timer is feared across the league, and while he missed this Ehrenliga season after an injury, he’ll be back with a vengeance here. Torsten Bohm joins them, his first time in the Goldhorns jersey. The winger plays on a line with Schlager and Heider for Marlesee, and has become known as a clutch performer - he scored the Strauss Cup winning goal in game 6 overtime, making him a hero forever. The Goldhorns will be hoping some of that clutch gene within him comes alive again here.

Third Forward Line

RW -- Christian Hasselberger -- Pinguine Ternau -- 29y/o -- #24
C -- Gunter Pfenning -- St. Jakob Saints -- 34y/o -- #9
LW -- Vitomir Glaskov -- Energija Chernovets -- 22y/o -- #20

This is an interesting unit. It has some semblance of being an ‘energy line’, with the big, tough Christian Hasselberger. Then you have ‘Gunter the Great’, Gunter Pfenning, still a player with an incredible mind for the game and great skill, even if he isn’t as quick anymore. And with them is a centre transplanted to the wing, Vitomir Glaskov. The young, speedy Glaskov keeps this line quick, and proves that the Goldhorns have tremendous centre depth. Hasselberger is an energy player, capable of throwing around big hits - but he can also put up the points when needed, which makes him so beloved in Ternau. And with a top-5 all-time Ehrenliga player beside him in Pfenning, as well as a young star in Glaskov, this line will have a key role to play in the Goldhorns’ hopes.

Fourth Forward Line

RW -- Aleksej Knejz -- Felsenkirchen Jets -- 19y/o -- #93
C -- Erhard Lasker -- Eisbaren Stelburg -- 27y/o -- #37
LW -- Veselin Filipov -- Olympia Borograd -- 32y/o -- #15

The shutdown line. This is the unit you will see Aaron Kuhn deploy from time to time against the opponent’s top lines. Erhard Lasker is one of the best defensive forwards in the league today, which was seen as he captured the Lothar Weinwurm Trophy and helped Eisbaren Stelburg to one of the best defensive records in the league. Don’t underestimate this two-way forward, however, as he is also a skilled playmaker. Veselin Filipov is a fixture of this line for the national team, having been used in the shutdown role for many tournaments now. He’s a creative player, but also good at backchecking. Aleksej Knejz, the captain of the Goldhorns’ World Junior gold medalists, had an excellent rookie season with the Jets, and cracks the team here. The big body will have the task of scoring on this line, but also to use some of that physicality in the two-way role.

First Defence Pair

D -- Toni Mihelic -- Olympia Borograd -- 24y/o -- #5
D -- Gregor Herder -- Stelburg Kaisers -- 31y/o -- #6

It was a breakout year for Toni Mihelic this year, as he won the Stanislav Slezak Trophy as the league’s best defenceman, and was absolutely pivotal for Olympia Borograd all year long. Mihelic is an excellent skater, and moves the puck very well - he’ll be relied upon a lot in this role. He can also put up the points, with great passing vision and a decent shot. With him is Gregor Herder, more of a physical defender who is at his best in his own zone. Herder is a menace in front of the net, but also a smart player. While he won’t be relied on to move the puck here, he’s got a good slapshot and makes smart passes.

Second Defence Pair

D -- Jorg Gottschall -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 29y/o -- #3
D -- Koloman Schwarzmann -- Teufelsberg Devils -- 29y/o -- #4

Jorg Gottschall is a key member of this team, another defender who is great at moving the puck up the ice. He’s not afraid to join the rush, and that skill has definitely been a benefit for him with the high-octane Seelowe Marlesee offence. With the national team, too, he can be counted on to play a big part in the team’s offence. With him is Koloman Schwarzmann, the big 6’8 defenceman who is, to put it simply, difficult. He’s big, he’s rough, and is willing to punish opposing forwards who get in too close. Schwarzmann developed a bit of a streak for taking penalties at inopportune times for the Devils this season, and while he had to carry much of the team’s load himself with star player Schnyder out, the Goldhorns will be needing more discipline from him here.

Third Defence Pair

D -- Lothar Scherer -- Stelburg Kaisers -- 33y/o -- #22
D -- Stefan Schiele -- Marzig Wolves -- 22y/o -- #8

Similar to the above pairings, it’s a combination of a bigger, tougher player with a speedy, skilled puck-mover. Lothar Scherer, the Kaisers veteran who is capable of laying down big hits when needed - but his strength doesn’t always come from playing the body, as he’s also good at stickwork. Stefan Schiele, meanwhile, is an offensive-minded player who has been the key piece of the Wolves’ powerplay for a few seasons now, a brilliant offensive defenceman who will be relied on to be creative from the blueline.

Extra Skaters

D -- Evgeni Tomic -- Energija Chernovets -- 20y/o -- #2
LW -- Vincent Schell -- Eisbaren Stelburg -- 28y/o -- #21
D -- Volen Atanasov -- Olympia Borograd -- 23y/o -- #26
C -- Leon Goss - Marzig Wolves -- 20y/o -- #61

Two younger players on the extras list, both from the World Junior team. Tomic is a big, powerful defenceman, with a cannon for a slapshot. Leon Goss is a dynamic centre in the mold of Edwin Ranger, with a similarly-deadly wrist shot. Both players can expect to see some time during this tournament, and there’s potential, over the course of the group stage, for them to earn their way up into the main roster. Vincent Schell was a key player for Eisbaren Stelburg all year, he’ll be rotated into the team - particularly with that unit led by Erhard Lasker, with whom he has such great chemistry. Volen Atanasov is here as well, some were surprised he wasn’t a part of the 18 skaters named as the primary roster after such a great season with Olympia, but he’ll get a chance to prove that it was a mistake here.

Goalies

G -- David Wagner -- Stelburg Kaisers -- 32y/o -- #1
G -- Volker Seiden -- Eisbaren Stelburg -- 28y/o -- #30
G -- Ventseslav Valchev -- Seelowe Marlesee -- 32y/o -- #31

A great crop of goaltenders here for the Goldhorns. David Wagner is known for his performances in high-pressure situations, as seen in his brilliant playoff run with the Kaisers two seasons ago to capture the Strauss Cup, winning several overtime games. He’s also been excellent ever since taking over the starting job for his country. Volker Seiden was the league’s best goalie last year, and while he came under some criticism for his performance in the playoffs, he’ll get a shot at redemption here. Ventseslav Valchev, meanwhile, proves to continue to be a solid goaltender - traded to Marlesee mid-season and playing a big part in their Cup run.

Special Teams Units

Powerplay 1: Tsvetanov - Schlager - Heider; Mihelic - Ranger

For the World Cup of Hockey, the national team will be wearing new jerseys designed by Donnaconan design company Infinite. The new jerseys are very similar to the old, but are a much sleeker look, the ‘Triple Edelweiss’ logo continuing to be front and centre. The writing ‘Siovanija and Teusland’ has been removed, and a black strip added to the bottom of the jerseys. The gold primary uniform will serve as the home jersey for this tournament, with the blue primary uniform serving as the away jersey. “We’re very pleased with the design, and we’d like to thank Infinite for their hard work on these,” said Hockey Siovanija & Teusland in a statement.

Home Games

The Goldhorns will be splitting their home games between 3 arenas. The Stelburg Eispalast (25,000) in Stelburg, the St. Jakob Forum (20,000) in St. Jakob, and the Olimpski-Ledarena (22,000) in Borograd. These arenas are the hosts to Ehrenliga clubs such as the Stelburg Kaisers, St. Jakob Saints and Olympia Borograd. The Eispalast and Forum were also the host arenas for the World Junior Hockey Championship, and so the Goldhorns will be hoping to make some more great memories on that ice. At the first home game in Stelburg, the World Junior Champions banner will be raised to the rafters at the Eispalast, with all members of the gold-medal winning team present.

We’ll continue to bring total coverage of World Cup of Hockey 40, as the Goldhorns seek to continue their rise on the international stage. Come on you Goldhorns!

Hockey Night in Siovanija & Teusland

World Cup of Hockey Preview Show

Ronald Mensing: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen across Siovanija & Teusland. I’m joined here by our Hockey Night in Siovanija & Teusland panel, Elias Freimann and Lazar Jurkovic, Oskar Kische will be joining us later in the evening, and we’re here to preview the World Cup of Hockey. Let’s get right into it, Elias, it’s a new era for this team, isn’t it?

Elias Freimann: It is, Ron. This is the first time that Gunter Pfenning isn’t coming into this tournament as the 1C for this team - he’s been replaced by Timo Schlager, and Edwin Ranger has even moved up to the second line. Pfenning has been, naturally, gracious about that, saying he’ll accept whatever role he’s given. And so, this one is going to be on the young blood.

Lazar Jurkovic: That’s right - Aaron Kuhn is signalling that this is Schlager and Ranger’s team now, and that they are going to be the ones taking this team as far as they can. They’ve each played internationally before, not in this big of a role - and now it’s time for them to step up. Timo Schlager gave the best performance of his life in the Strauss Cup Final a few months ago - 10 points in 6 games. He’s ready for this role, and I’d look to him to raise his game even further here.

RM: That’s what it’ll take, won’t it? That top unit, Schlager with Heider and Tsvetanov - what are you expecting to see from them?

EF: To go for the obvious answer, Ron, goals. Just Tsvetanov alone makes this a dangerous line - the guy is so powerful, one of the best power forwards in our game for a long time, and that top powerplay unit is just going to be so difficult. Tsvetanov loves to sit in that spot at the top of the slot and wait to get open, then blast a one-timer. And now you’re going to see him on a line with the best playmaker in our league, Heider, and obviously Schlager. I can’t wait to see them in action.

LJ: There’s just so much chemistry between Heider and Schlager - it’s like they’ve played together their whole lives, the way they just seem to know where the other is sometimes. And I’m excited to see how Tsvetanov will fit into that, a guy with such a great ability for finding open spaces. I think he and Heider will quickly take to each other, especially on the power play.

RM: Vitomir Glaskov is on the team, playing left wing rather than his natural position at centre. Is that going to take some adjusting to, or will Glaskov be able to dive right in quickly?

EF: I heard that Glaskov actually told Aaron Kuhn that he could play on the wing, Ron, so that he could get that spot on the team. Glaskov is a guy that will do anything for the team - and I think some of his attributes are going to adapt well, especially that speed.

LJ: Honestly, Ron - you could take a team of only centres from the Ehrenliga and still put together a pretty competitive team, that’s the level of centre depth available to the Goldhorns. Guys like Leon Goss, Wolfram Holtz, Gero Radulov - they aren’t even on the team, and they are some of the better players in the league. You need a player with as much skill as Glaskov, and you fit him in where you can. I don’t think it’ll be a problem - it’s easier for a centre to play wing than a winger to play up the middle.

RM: You mention some of the notable omissions, Lazar - and one that’s getting the most attention has to be Volan Atanasov. He’s listed in the reserve list, of course, but many Olympia Borograd fans are a bit shocked to see him not on the team. What’s the thinking there?

EF: Atanasov is excellent at putting the points up - he actually finished just 2 back of his teammate Toni Mihelic in scoring by defenceman this season. But the Goldhorns have in that position Mihelic, Jorg Gottschall and Stefan Schiele. Aaron Kuhn likes to pair up puck-moving defencemen with bigger bodies, and while I think Atanasov is going to get some minutes in the tournament as it goes on, he’s going to have to be the 7th D for now.

LJ: There are some concerns with Atanasov in his own zone, I think that’s the biggest knock on his game - some have said he takes too many risks with the puck, and at the top level of international competition you can’t afford too many mistakes like that. He still has room to grow as a player, and I think that’s the message Aaron Kuhn wants to send him here.

RM: Let’s go to the crease, which will surely be one of the biggest parts of the Goldhorns’ chances at this tournament. David Wagner looks set to be the starter - any reason to think otherwise?

EF: Well, obviously there’s two great goalies behind him in Volker Seiden and Ventseslav Valchev, and I’m sure they’ll be giving everything to challenge him. But look, Wagner is just so solid in all situations - he seems to enter another gear in the playoffs, and when playing for his country.

LJ: If anyone is going to take over, though, I’d give the edge to Valchev. He’s clearly still got it, and you talk about playoff performance - Valchev has won 2 Strauss Cups in his career, including this season with Marlesee. They’ll all get a chance in the group stage for sure, and I think Aaron Kuhn is willing to go with whoever he thinks gives the team the best chance - he’s not locked into just one guy.

RM: If you had to pick one player to have the biggest impact for the Goldhorns at this tournament, who would it be?

EF: Edwin Ranger. Players react to heartbreaking losses in different ways - and when Ranger and the Kaisers lost the Strauss Cup Final, you could see it in his eyes that he was going to be back even stronger. He’s a 60 goal scorer who has something to prove and has been putting in the work all summer to get ready for this tournament - and that’s something that could be an X-factor for this team.

LJ: Erhard Lasker. The Ehrenliga is a tough league to be a shutdown centre in - you’re going up against names like Pfenning, Schlager, Goss, Glaskov, Ranger and more night in and night out. But Erhard Lasker proved to be up to the task last year, winning the Lothar Weinwurm Trophy as the best two-way forward, and helping his Eisbaren Stelburg club to the best defensive record in the league. He’s an excellent penalty killer, and just excels at making some of the game’s biggest offensive talents struggle for a night. He’s the guy you want going up against the best centres from other countries, and I think this is his time to break out.

RM: Thanks guys. We’re joined now by the one and only Oskar Kirsche, and Oskar, what is that suit?

Oskar Kirsche: Gotta have the edelweiss on there proudly, you know that Ron, and the tie, it’s gold, because that’s what we’re going for here I tell ya!

RM: Certainly a bold choice, but I’d expect nothing less from you. What do you make of this lineup?

OK: Well Ron, good to see a good Stelburg boy in Edwin Ranger up there I tell ya! He’s got the best wrist shot in the league today, and he’s going to be one to watch! Don’t let him get open!

RM: Oskar, I know you said to me that you think the third line is going to be absolutely key. Why is that?

OK: Everyone knows how much I like Christian Hasselberger, and if you’re looking for a key guy he’s the one I tell ya! He’s not going to be able to fight - I won’t go into that, though, but he can still lay out a big hit I tell ya! You want him out on the ice within the first few minutes, get some energy into the game, passion, get the guys going! And putting him with Pfenning, boy, that’s going to a dangerous group! Both guys can put up the points too! And you’ve got Viktor Gasinov -

RM: Vitomir Glaskov

OK: Yeah, Vladimir Giranov, anyways, he’s a quick one I tell ya! He’s going to have a good time on that line, too, look at him to have a big tournament with those other two guys!

RM: I’d ask who you think the breakout star will be, but I think we already know the ans-

OK: Hasselberger! I remember when we watched the World Juniors, and I said that it would be Benedikt Ressel to get the game winner - they’re the same type of guy, the pest, the disturber, the player other teams are going to love to hate. And he’s one of my favourites I tell ya!

RM: Is there any name that isn’t on this team that you think should be?

OK: I was shocked to see Vincent Schell only as a reserve, honestly, Ron, I think he’s best when he’s playing with Lasker, and he’d be a perfect guy for that fourth line - Filitov is a player, everybody knows that, but there’s not much difference between the two, and I’d go for the guy with chemistry and that’s a fact!

RM: Thanks for joining us, Oskar.

OK: No problem - and let’s go Goldhorns!

RM: That concludes our World Cup of Hockey preview show. Of course, Hockey Night in Siovanija & Teusland will have full coverage of the Goldhorns’ journey at World Cup of Hockey 40, from start to finish! Let's go Goldhorns!

'The IBEX'
NEU ENGOLLON NATIONAL HOCKEY TEAM:

The Ibex and hockey in Neu Engollon
There is one professional hockey league in Neu Engollon, the NEHL, with an associated minor league known as B League. There is also a strong collegiate tradition in the sport, the NECHL is run by NECA (Neu Engollian Collegiate Association) and the NEHL pull their players from graduates of these top schools along with some B League players. The Ibex are all pulled from the NEHL, or Neu Engollian nationals playing in equivalent foreign leagues. Andre Manon and Ernst Volkzein, both retired players from the National Ibex and the NEHL, and are in the management helm of the Ibex. The Ibex have brought home the Cup two years in a row, bookended by getting 3rd place the year previous and following, after so many previous heartbreaking runs for it over the years. They are determined to return it to its case of honor in Albertsville for another year.

Poafmersia's WCoH 40 Squad

Postby PotatoFarmers » Mon Jul 27, 2020 2:04 am

Poafmersia National Hockey Team for WCoH 40

Nickname: Golden Phoenix
Colors: Metallic Gold, White
Domestic League: Poafmersian Ice Hockey League (PIHL)

About Hockey in Poafmersia: Hockey isn't the most popular sport in Poafmersia, greatly losing out to football/soccer (the most popular), rugby and basketball in terms of team sports. Even with regards to hockey, the group of hockey players are unable to agree on what type of hockey to play, with some preferring field hockey, while others prefer ice hockey.

Roster
Line 1
LW - #12 - Diogo Aita, 25 y/o (Mancodas Athletic HC)
C - #36 - Jada Esposito, 27 y/o (Mancodas Athletic HC)
RW - #14 - Kwaku Hermansson, 26 y/o (Mancodas Athletic HC)

Line 2
LW - #20 - Simon Pesti, 28 y/o (Dalaris Sports HC)
C - #17 - Soner Elzinga, 26 y/o (Dalaris Sports HC)
RW - #15 - Yuriy Sokoll, 27 y/o (Dalaris Sports HC)

When these 2 lines were decided, they were not arranged based on any form of overall skill, but rather, due to the chemistry that these 2 sets of players have shown in the PIHL. Both right wingers are the joint top-scorers in the PIHL for 2 consecutive seasons now, and are very excellent players. But both sides have very different strengths which contributed to the order of the line.
Line 1, known to Mancodas Athletic fans as the AEH line, is a very explosive frontline that can score like nothing against weaker sides. Diogo Aita is known for his skills with the puck, being able to pull off very nice shots and passes, utilising the field and players to make calculated shots that bounce off the other players. Kwaku Hermansson is known for his high accuracy in making shots, understanding when to slide the puck across the field and when to go for goal. On the other hand, Jada Esposito is the natural leader, who also presents high-powered shots The three players have small physique, so they zip around the field really quickly and move into very good spots to get to goal.
However, Line 2 presents a very different picture. Coming from title rivals Dalaris Sports HC, these players are the traditional ice hockey players, having big physique and being able to muscle their way to get to positions that they desire. Yuriy Sokoll is the "battlemaster", willing to go forward to pick a battle for the puck in the corners. Soner Elzinga is the bridge between defence and offence, the creative playmaker that dictates the tempo of the game. Simon Pesti, on the other hand, is more of a grinder, but he is the player that presents some offensive capabilities to be placed on the second line.

Line 3
LW - #33 - Pierce Acker, 30 y/o (Fiskadaha Bears)
CW - #28 - Kellan Lorenz, 32 y/o (Trimidau HC)
RW - #32 - Cóemgein Baird, 24 y/o (Fiskadaha Bears)
A traditional checking line, this line is made up of defensive-minded players who are capable of getting passes and checks to achieve their goal of time stalling. Cóemgein Baird is a surprise on this line, as he typically plays on the 2nd line for his club. Baird is a player who is also capable of getting in front of goal to bash the puck. However, his capabilities to be both defensive and offensive has allowed him to play here with 2 really physical linemates.

Line 4
LW - #13 - Sabri Colquhoun, 26 y/o (Madaris Hornets)
C - #23 - Boreas McGee, 27 y/o (Dalaris Sports HC)
RW - #11 - Rama McDevitt - 26 y/o (Trimidau HC)
The true "energy line", it comprises of 3 heavyweights who are very good at stopping top opposition lines. Boreas McGee is one of the best grinders in Poafmersia, very good at backchecking. Sabri Colquhoun is that big guy who tends to muscle his way to get back the puck, and is also the kind of player you expect to start fights. Rama McDevitt is a player who has lots of stamina, being able to remain full of energy even when the opposition is weak.

Defence Pair 1
D - #3 - Hulderic Schindler, 28 y/o (Mancodas Athletic HC)
D - #4 - Pan Baghdasaryan, 28 y/o (Dalaris Sports HC)
The best defenders in the PIHL, both players are the offensive-minded defenders, known in Poafmersia as "power quarterback", a reference to quaterbacks in Rugby or Gridiron Football. Both players love to trend the blue line, making sure that the puck stay within the offensive and neutral zones. More often then not, their eagle-eye sight prevents the puck from making runaways behind them, keeping the goaltender free. There used to be a joke that whenever they play in the Mancodas-Dalaris derby in PIHL, the points scored will start to decrease, because they will help their respective sides get the puck away. When the both of them play together, sparks would certainly fly, and surely this is good news for the defence?

Defence Pair 2
D - #5 - Bartholomaios Dempsey - 34 y/o (Mancodas Athletic HC)
D - #6 - Dan Sharma, 33 y/o (Trimidau HC)
Veterans at the play, they may have moved away from their peak, but that doesn't mean their agility has become weaker in anyway. Dempsey and Sharma are friends who are now playing for opposing clubs, so they have very good understanding of each other. Unlike the first defensive pairing, they prefer to stay further behind, pushing the puck forward for the offence to pick up, or to get powerful shots straight into the offensive zone.

Defence Pair 3
D - #7 - Wodan Hanegan - 24 y/o (Madaris Hornets)
D - #9 - Mehrab Roncalli - 28 y/o (Trimidau HC)
2 stay-home defenders, you rarely see them near the offensive blue line. Time wasters at heart, coming from weaker clubs in the league, they are very good at time-stalling. They would much rather play long shots to the front than to risk the opposition getting the ball.

Goaltenders
G - #1 - Hadi Darby - 31 y/o (Mancodas Athletic HC)
G - #8 - Noach Salamanca - 26 y/o (Fiskadaha Bears)
With Dalaris Sports HC's 3 time goaltender-of-the-season injured, Noach Salamanca got into the list. Hadi Darby would be the better and more experienced goaltender. Meanwhile, Noach is known to perform in high-pressure situations, allowing Fiskadaha Bears to make really surprising runs in the league.

Seventh Player
#93 - Gerbern Wallace - 28 y/o (Fiskadaha Bears)
Can play anywhere and everywhere. A typical defensive offenceman, he is experienced in playing both defence and offence. A very good two-way player.

Powerplay Unit: Aita - Elzinga - Hermansson; Schindler - Baghdasaryan
Penalty Kill:Colquhoun - Baird; Dempsey - Sharma

Coaching Team
Team Manager - Patya Bosco, 50 y/o
Assistant Coach - Ernestas Rey, 57 y/o
Managing the pack here at the WCoH is Patya Bosco, a former Ice hockey player, as well as Ernestas Rey, former manager of Fiskadaha Bears. The two of them know their tactics really well and intends to utilise tactical switches to ensure victories.

Style Modifier: +0.002
No offence or defence - something that is rather rare for Poafmersian sports. A slight positive modifier just shows that the team's top priority is to score more; but at the same time they are willing to sit down and hold the fort.

Home Venues
Poafmersia will play their home games in 2 venues - Trimidau Arena and Mancodas Sports Complex.
Trimidau Arena
The 18,270 seater is a specially designed Ice Rink, located in Rukiya, Piskn State. The cities of Naksa and Rukiya are part of the Trimidau Island, an offshore island located 900 miles out of mainland Poafmersia. Despite the island's relatively small population, the locals are sports fanatics, which is the reason why it is home to 2 soccer clubs, 2 basketball clubs, 1 rugby club, and one of the Big 2 ice hockey clubs. The Trimidau Arena serves as the home ground of Trimidau HC, a hockey club that plays in the PIHL.
Trimidau can be accessed by a 2-hour domestic flight from Mancodas Airport or Fiskadaha International Airport, and flights serve both the Rukiya Airport and the Naksa Airbase.

Mancodas Sports Complex
Mancodas Sports Complex is an all-in-one sports hub located in Mancodas. As a result, its facilities are shared between the people and the professional sports clubs that reside in the city, and that some of its facilities are multipurpose facilities. For example, the 17650-seater ice rink used for the ice hockey competitions can be converted to become a ice-skating ring, and it is shared by the local ice-skating community and Mancodas Athletic HC, the PIHL club.
Mancodas can be accessed by Mancodas Airport, one of Poafmersia's 2 main gateways to the international world (the other being the Fiskadaha International Airport). To travel between capital Fiskadaha City and Mancodas, there is a high-speed rail connecting both cities. Otherwise, it can be accessed by railroad, the main form of inter-city transport.

HUElavia To Participate in the 40th WCoH!

Once again, Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos participate in the World Cup of Hockey XL, their 3rd Straight appearance and 3rd overall appearance. Once again, the 23-player roster used for WCoH XXXIX will be playing once again in the tournament, as the look to build up where they left off. Last time around in Kelssek, HUElavia was a surprise package, as they managed to advance from the Group Stage into the Round-of-16. They were defeated by the eventual champions Cassadaigua in what was a thrilling match that went all the way to penalty-shootouts, where the team was eliminated.

This time around, there is a massive interest in the sport, as it is now considered the 3rd most popular sport in HUElavia, right after Football and Futsal, and there was a massive success in the establishment of the HUElavian Hockey League (HHL), which took place across different stadiums around the country. Fans look to the team with optimism as they hope that the team can make another Round-of-16 appearance and hopefully upset some teams along the way.

With the draw done, HUElavia (16) was placed in Group H for the tournament, which their opponents are as follows: Siovanija and Teusland (5), Lorenthia (23), Adyatin (44), Kayangan (UR), and Graintfjall (UR). The groups going to be played in a round-robin format, with each team playing against each other twice, coming out to a total of 10 games. After these 10 matches, the Top 2 will advance to the Round-of-16. Based on pre-tournament rankings, Los Amarillos/Os Amarelos are projected to advance into the knockouts, but nothing is guaranteed, and the team will look to play their traditional cautious but attacking style of Hockey.

Fans will be coming out to the host nation of The Royal Kingdom of Quebec, a nation located in northern Alantian Oceania, which has a mix of Franc (French), Angshire (English) and Jeong (Korean) culture. As always, the HUElavian government gives their orders to HUElavians to be cautious and be the best visitors they can be and to enjoy the experience, which thousands of fans will be traveling to support the team. HUElavia looks forward to another edition of the World Cup of Hockey.

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!

The most dangerous game: Inside the hockey rivalry that divides Kelssek | Part 1

[Int.] A man you could tactfully describe as corpulent sits at the bar in a typical wood-panelled Kirkenes pub, the antlers of an out of focus Keefe’s neon sign flickering slightly behind him. He waves his arms expressively, the loose sleeves of his worn-out Kirkenes Rangers hockey jersey flapping as he does so.

“We like to call our rivalries ‘battles’, you know? Battle of Etnier. Battle of Beaulac. Battle of the Claire Valley. Cause most of them are city vs. city so it’s not really a “derby”. But none of them are [bleep]ing battles either. You can sit the fans next to each other, they got people coming through to sell beer and popcorn... This one, it actually is a derby. And it actually is a battle. People get killed.”

[Interviewer] “And you mean literally killed.”

“Riots, deaths, destruction. But not all bad. It gave us our revolution, too.”

A caption informs you the interviewer’s name is Connor Harrington. He is a young bearded man wearing a plaid shirt. He looks like he works at the bicycle co-op part-time. In fact, that was nearly two years ago, thank you very much. He walks through the heavily graffitied alleys of Lancs Hill as he talks. “Picture yourself back in the early industrial era. It’s springtime and revolution has broken out in the lands that are soon to be known as Kelssek. The great and good of Kirkenes are in shock as news comes that royal authority has collapsed in the principality to their north and the Etnierian Socialist Republic has been declared.”

Historical photos appear, mostly of police beating people with sticks. “The realm’s breadbasket has rebelled and grain is soon to be in short supply, sparking panic buying in the city. A few days later, workers in Redswyth call a general strike. Even if the rebels would sell them food, there won’t be transportation to get it there, and after a harsh winter the stores within the city are running low.”

[Cut back to the Rangers fan in the pub] “The problem was that back over a hundred years ago, the difference between two teams was turned into the difference between different sorts of people.”

The narrator’s stride through the alleys continues. “On March 28, the Rangers and Red Dragons, Kirkenes’s two most popular hockey teams, are set to play in a semi-final for the Prince’s Cup. The Dragons tend to be supported by industrial workers and Gaelic-speakers, those now suspected of being disloyal and insurrectionist. The Rangers fanbase is harder to pin down to any distinct group, but they do have a sceptre and crown on their club crest.”

“What happens next is still widely debated, as part of the ferment that led to revolution and the process of confederation. Some say it was Rangers fans who ambushed Dragons supporters who brought in a red banner and stabbed two of them, and that’s what started the trouble. Others claim it was Dragons fans without tickets who charged the police to force their way inside the arena. The atmosphere in the arena is tense and not just because of the hockey game, which goes ahead despite the incidents going on outside.”

[The camera returns to the interviewer, outdoors in the city, with a slim middle-aged man wearing a Dragons jersey who is pointing at things of apparent significance. Evidently this guy is the source of the voiceover.]
“So midway through the third period, fans shower debris on the ice and the game has to be delayed for a clean-up after a controversial penalty against the Dragons. And then with two minutes left in the match, fights start breaking out in the crowd and benches are set on fire. Now you’ve got an enclosed building quickly filling with smoke. Most normal people, what do they do? They try to get out. And... it didn’t go very well.”

[Interviewer narrates] “Hundreds of people are injured in the crush, parts of the arena collapse, and in the end there are at least 106 deaths – the exact figures differ. The casualties are mostly Dragons fans.”

[Interviewer with the Dragons fan] “Was it deliberate?”
“Now, we’ve never had a proper investigation into the Aflan Gardens incident. Which you can understand, because pretty soon the Principality was embroiled in bigger disasters, a general strike, famine, succession struggles, and then armed rebellion. Then after confederation, it was all about unity and not reopening old wounds. So was it deliberate? Some people think so. But the authorities were clearly complicit. They cracked down on one side and not on the other. And this was part of it. A bunch of Catholics getting killed? Tough luck. Probably their own fault. Hell, lots of them still think like that.”
[Interviewer] “Them?”
“The aristocrats, the property-owners, the Anglo elite.”
[Interviewer] “Rangers fans?”
“You said it, not me. Well anyway, when the game was over the Red Dragons win, the police arrest all the Dragons players but say it's 'protective custody', and that’s when the riot really got started.”

Puck Watch: The Ice Jags Are Back?!

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Jul 28, 2020 8:06 am

Name: TJUN-ia
Trigram: TJU
Governing Body: Ice Hockey TJUN-ia (IHT/IH-TJUN-ia)
Nickname: Ice Jaguars/Jaguars
Colours: Home - Blue/Orange, Away - White/Blue

So, you forgot about Ice Hockey? So did many others in TJUN-ia, so I'm not gonna blame you. With so many other things going on, it's easy to forget about tournaments we competed in a while back ago. But now it's time for a reminder: we took part in the 39th World Cup of Hockey a while ago in Kelssek. I believe we won only 1 game but it would be a historic tournament, with Cassadaigua as the victors for the first time (I think). Now we have the next edition, but things are going to be a bit different. Like the World Bowl, we have to play in a home-and-away group stage before the finals in The Royal Kingdom of Quebec. That means that TJUN-ia will actually host some hockey for the first time and IHT will be hoping for World Bowl-style successes in terms of fan engagement. It might be a stretch to qualify from this group, but at least we will certainly try to do something.

COACHING STAFF
Head Coach: Ølson Rasmussen (39)
Assistant Coach: Pytor Petrov (36)
Assistant Coach: Yakov Blykovsky (35)
Style Modifier: +0.5

The same players are here from the last WCoH, but the coaching staff is now organised. 39-year-old Ølson Rasmussen from the NAU was chosen to lead this team to as many wins as he can, overtime or otherwise, and he will hope to impress under the spotlight. He has 2 CSTO assistants, Pytor Petrov and Yakov Blykovsky, who will be looking to help get the tactics through to the players while also competing for the head coaching job if Rasmussen is kicked out by IHT. Rasmussen will employ a lightly attacking system, with the aim of ensuring no easy opportunities for the opposition to score.

ARENA
Name: The Rink in The Gardens
Location: New Washington, NAU Zone
Capacity: 7,500

You'd think that The Gardens of New Washington would demand a bigger venue for their ice hockey arena, but they wanted to play tribute to the Secretary-General here. His hometown in U1 has a small rink of similar capacity, so developers decided to build The Rink to have a similar feel. While it may be small, the fans will make it sound like there's a lot more people in there - NAU ice hockey fans are known for being load and boisterous when required.

Muhoozi Kutombo elected first Banijan President of the World Cup of Hockey Federation

Image
Kutombo holds a press conference in Herzegovina City announcing his resignation as President of the Banijan Hockey Federation

QUEBEC CITY, ROYAL KINGDOM OF QUEBEC- Many of us, of course, don't follow the drama behind the suits who run the wide world of sports. And it makes sense- we watch sports not to figure out who the suits are and what they do, but to watch the actual product on the field. Whatever the suits do is just a byproduct of the actual game on the field- the game that makes everyone money, the game that is why we're here in the first place. But what the suits do is important, even if we don't think about it much. And who is wearing these suits is also important, even if we don't think about them much. They lead the sport, make the big decisions, help decide the rules, and do all sorts of behind the scenes work that effects the game.

In recent years, the men and women who wear the suits in the Banijan sports world have made a dramatic rise in status, alongside the rise of Banijans on the field. It makes sense- as Banijans get involved in hosting more and more tournaments, people begin to respect organizational skills and what not, and put these people in positions of power. The most famous one, and the one you probably know, is WCC Hall of Famer Adama Sowe. The Co-Chairman of the World Cup 81 Host Committee, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Regional Transit Corporation, a member of the Executive Council of the IFCF, and most importantly, the Vice President of the World Cup Committee. Oh so close to the throne.

But elsewhere, Banijans have seen themselves rise. Kamoyo Chikondi, the Executive Vice President of the Olympic Committee of Banija's Baseball Division, was elected the Vice President of the World Baseball Council. When the Free Republics President resigned, he became the acting President of the said council. Chikondi, of course, has full-time responsibilities as a member of the Orean-Istria Olympic Host Committee, so he organized early elections to allow his term to end and the next to begin. We had Isaac Muhumuza serve as the Acting President of the World Bowl Assembly, as he swept into power. He, also, declined to run for re-election, as he also had full-time responsibilities as a member of the Orean-Istria Olympic Host Committee.

With the Olympic Committee of Banija in charge of most sports in this country, most of Banija's sporting suits are working on that. But the Banijan Hockey Federation is largely not. Of course, hockey is not a Summer Olympic sport, so it makes sense. That is what leads us to Muhoozi Kutombo. Although multiple Banijans have served as President of an international sporting body, none have been elected President. And Kutombo, against all the odds, has been elected as President of the World Cup of Hockey Federation. He will, of course, move to the headquarters in Quebec City to serve out his role, and lose his title as President of the Banijan Hockey Federation.

That leaves us to beg the question- how in the world did a Banijan, from a country without winter, become President of the global ice hockey governing body? Well, when you understood the blood, the sweat, the toil that Muhoozi Kutombo has put into growing the sport among Banijans, both inside and outside of the country, you will understand why his colleagues thought he would be able to successfully run this body. Banija's hockey fans, of course, understand the premise behind the Greater Banijan Hockey League. There isn't enough interest domestically to have a fully fledged pro hockey league.

So he worked to unite and connect the diaspora through the Greater Banijan Hockey League. His brainchild is, of course, a deeply complicated effort- working across international lines, with all sorts of governments, different communities, and all sorts of domestic hockey federations. But it has been a success- the league is growing, interest in the league grows, and it has the effect of developing a Banijan talent base abroad. The strong foreign talent coming in is good for the now and the tomorrow, with the juniors team making a semifinal run at the most recent World Hockey Juniors, while the senior side is ranked 8th in the multiverse.

Of course, working with all those types of organizations means that the chance to relationship build is there. He works with people all across the multiverse. It makes him one of the most well-connected leaders in this sport. And so his rise to the top, where he will work now in Quebec City, rather than Herzegovina City, is complete. He'll, of course, resign his positions as the President of the Banijan Hockey Federation and the Commissioner of the GBHL. Both of those roles will be taken on by Asuman Lukwago, who was the previous Vice President of the BHF, and Chief Marketing Officer of the GBHL.

Big times ahead, and a big congratulations to, Muhoozi Kutombo. We'll see if Asuman Lukwago, who has now risen to the top, can continue to improve Banija's position in this sport.

It is not easy to take care of a VVIP, let alone have 36 VIP and VVIP children at the same time this foreign country is a very complicated task for the Presidential Guard Regiment. The Presidential Guard Regiment commander, Colonel Genting Ruas Bungsu, has a difficult but important task to implement. Therefore, he entrusted this task to his most trusted officer, Captain Arus Beradik who will lead the Special Platoon 21, Presidential Guard Regiment, who will be assigned to take care of the leader's son and VVIP during the 40th World Cup of Hockey Championship in the Royal Kingdom of Quebec.

Special Platoon 21, Presidential Guard Regiment is a special task unit used only for sensitive and complicated tasks. It is made up of 21 young officers who have their own expertise and their courage has been tested. In addition to them, the National Police Department has also sent undercover detectives to act as back up to the Royal Kingdom of Quebec to assist Special Platoon 21 if urgent needs. Among the VVIP children who are the main concern are four grandchildren of President Kayangan and two children of the Vice President of Kayangan, in addition to a dozen more children of the minister and head of the big conglomerate in Kayangan. These are all "headache" for them to control.

Special Platoon 21 consists of 3 different squads, namely HQ and security squad, close escort squad and transport and technical squad. HQ and security squad are responsible for the command, control and communication elements between them. While the security squad will move as an advance team to check for potential threats and also ensure all courts are safe for these VVIP children to play. The close escort squad has the role of escorting them from the accommodation to the competition location as well as when returning to the accommodation to ensure there is no threat to them. They are also trained in familiarizing themselves with various situations and have specialized expertise such as first aid and sniper. Lastly, the transport and technical squad will assist in terms of transportation matters, vehicle bomb detection, escape vehicle preparation and any technical and vehicle specs. Believe it or not, some of them are former professional car thieves who are specially hired to get their expertise to hijack any vehicle during an emergency.
