Nicksia Profile

Sarzonia's largest city has long been the cultural capital of The Incorporated States and is the centre of the country's creative scene. The city takes its name from Fleetwood Mac singer and solo singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks. The city boasts a population of 14.6 million people with a large district named Rhiannon that boasts an array of coffee shops, cafes, and contains a historic section with replicas of cobblestone streets.

The historic district includes the site of the old Nicksia Stock Exchange, which closed down in the mid-2000s when the country's financial centre moved to Portland with the ascent of the Portland Iron Works among the world's leading military contractors. The building was used for a while as a location for satellite PIW offices until the Benatar Historical Society acquired the building with funding from Sarzonia's Division of Culture.

Nicksia's sporting jewels are highlighted by Mike Sarzo Stadium, a retractable roof stadium with a natural grass pitch and a transparent retractable roof that allows sunlight in to provide nourishment for the grass. The stadium has a statue of founding Sarzonian President Mike Sarzo at the main entrance on Putnam Avenue. The stadium seats 77,910 and was recently renovated with solar panels and upgraded with the latest big screens, LED displays, and free Wifi access. The newly constructed Bank of Sarzonia Arena is in competition with the venerable Palestra in Woodstock for the status of home court for the Sarzonian national basketball team.

Visitors can attend the Naval History Museum near The Pier where people traveling between Sarzonia and Delaclava can also rent motor and sailboats for day trips between the two countries. Visitors can see the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship still afloat and the only commissioned warship in the Incorporated Sarzonian Navy without the ISS prefix. The ISS Rampage, a light aircraft carrier from Sarzonia's earliest days is also among the ships on display.

Aficionados of live music can get their fix at the Mabel Normand Centre for the Performing Arts five nights a week. Thursday nights are open mic nights where the house band allows any aspiring musicians to try out singing live. The Crystal Visions Palace offers free music lessons to anyone regardless of age or ability. Actors can play their trade in a supportive environment at the Sea of Love Thespian Centre.

Cultural Notes

Sarzonians are polite, but can be a little reserved and sometimes aloof when they meet strangers. However, once they get to know people, they can open up and let their guard down.

The currency in Sarzonia is the Sarzonian dollar. There is no $1 bill. The one dollar coin has a picture of Mike Sarzo on the obverse.

Nation Name: The Galactic Empire of Kohnhead
Shorter Name: Kohnhead
Nation Trigramme: KND
Record: 30-7-13 (W-D-L)
WCC Record: 21-6-11 (W-D-L)
Inaugural Match: Starcom Racing 3 - 1 Kohnhead
Achievements: Winning the 2nd Wonder Cup, round of 16 at 72nd BOF, 5th place in group 2 of WC85 qualfiers, round of 16 at 77th Cup of Harmony

The official roster of the KNFT consists of the following players for the Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy. This is a pretty new and expanded roster from what the team used during the WCC cylce. The team listed is their club team in the Kohnhead Futbol League (KFL) and it also has one college player.
***=Captain
Starting XI
***Forward: Aaron Korkson #91 (M) Age: 23 Team: Kohnhead City FC
The 22 year old captain played very well at the Baptism of Fire before their loss in the round of 16. He also was one of the main reasons they were able to do so well in qualifiers. He's a strong leader and is able to score goals pretty easily. He and Maltos are the stars on Kohnhead City FC and on national team. He hasn't even reached his prime yet, and when he does he will be a machine.

Forward: Erin Maltos #10 (F) Age: 23 Team: Kohnhead City FC
Maltos is the best player on the team hands down. Korkson is the better leader but there's a reason Maltos got the number 10 jersey. She at points during the BOF would really put the team on her back and she has very good footwork. The qualifiers saw her disappear in Korkson's shadown at points but she played very well in most games although her scoring numbers were a bit off. Together with Maltos and Korkson up top Kohnhead should have no problems scoring.

Center Mid: Linus Rallyton #11 (M) Age: 25 Team: FC Yassaca (SRS)
One of the surprising things that happened during the BOF was the emergence of the midfield trio of Rallyton, Cogginter, and Laker. Rallyton is the team's corner taker and the person who takes the free kicks. He plays on the center of the pitch and is able to be everyone on the pitch playing great defense and offense. During the qualifiers he was by far the best midfielder and is one of the best players on the team. Rallyton was recently sold to FC Yassaca in Squornshelan Remnant States where he will look to take that team to the next level.

Right Mid: Ida Cogginter #41 (F) Age: 28 Team: Kohnhead City FC
Heading into the BOF many thought Audrey Henderson the young 21 year old would have this spot. Cogginter proved those doubters wrong and had a fantastic tournament. She really is a big part in the flow of the offense and has great skills as a passer. Cogginter plays second fiddle on Kohnhead City to Korkson and Maltos but she really played well in the BOF and some claim her injury was the reason Kohnhead didn't make it to the quarters. The qualifiers were a different story as Cogginter in her first game back got injured and missed all of the first round of games. She looked great on her return and solidified her spot in the starting XI. The COH just proved how well she can play when completely healthy as she looked great.

Left Mid: Charles Laker #54 (M) Age: 20 Team: Barnley FC
Laker had some up and down games in the BOF and didn't play very well in the friendly versus Riena just before the BOF. He's quite young and has a very high upside as his talent is undeniable and he is a playmaker when he has the ball. He will be a mainstay on this team for many years and the BOF proved that. His BOF was better than the qualifiers but he has shown a lot and is a worthy starter. He also played quite well in the Wonder Cup.

Defensive Mid: Hannah Horsford #2 (F) Age: 30 Team: Philtront Pioneers
Horsford only got into the starting XI due to a formation change which removed Harry Richman from the striker and added her as a defensive midfielder. Overall I thought she was pretty eh and this is evidenced by the fact that the team allowed 5 goals to Maccian. She settled down against The Grearish Union though. She is the only member of the listed starters whose position is in any real doubt. She dismissed those doubts in the qualifiers by basically being the only capable defensive midfielder, as when she was subbed off the replacements struggled.

Right Back: Caroline Prius-Lenoard #76 (F) Age: 32 Team: Barnley FC
Prius-Leonard has had a poor COF just like the entire defense with the exception of Radison. She had some okay games in the group stage but was constantly struggling in many games. She has suffered through injuries and gone through grueling rehab to get here, but her athleticism is nowhere near its peak form. In qualifiers CPL was one of the strengths of the defense and really bounced back.

Center Back: Miranda Atkinson #51 (F) Age: 19 Barnley FC
Atkinson is the youngest member of the starting team and wasn't even a starter at the BOF until the 6th game for Kohnhead replacing Dylan Vargas. She didn't do terrible and compared to Vargas she looks amazing. Atkinson is young and her best days are ahead of her. She says she has resolved the miscommunication issues between her and Newcastle. She has had ups and downs but has now solidified her spot in the starting XI.

Center Back: Claire Corton #24 (F) Age: 26 Team: Swisston City FC
Corton had a rough start to the BoF, with some saying her and Vargas were the major problem with the team. She stepped it up a bit later in the tournament but overall had a rough BOF. We will see if she can turn it around as Vargas wants a starting spot back. Corton was playing the best football of her life but an injury cut her qualifiers short. She was still injured and missed all of the COH. Hopefully she will be at full strength in her return as she is better than Porsha.

Left Back: Nicholas Radison #14 (M) Age: 24 Team: FC Kohnface City
Radison has been the best defender by far. He has the pace to run up and down the wings which is something you always look for in a wing back. Radison has consistently been the lone saving grace of the defense but he's going to need some help if they team wants any shot at fighting in the COH.

Goalkeeper: Bertha Sanders #1 Age: 21 (F) Team: Philtront Pioneers
After starting for Kohnhead at the U-21 World Cup/DBC, Sanders in a surprise move has been named the National Team starter over Madison Richards. Richards will continue to be on the bench as Sanders who looked good at the DBC will take over for the star that was Jackson Newcastle. There are some good young keepers in Kohnhead but Sanders is at the front of the pack and should be the starter for like the next 15 years at the position.

Captain: Korkson
Left Free Kick: Rallyton
Right Free Kick: Rallyton
Right Corner: Rallyton
Left Corner: Rallyton

Formation: 4-1-3-2. It has two center backs, two full backs, a defensive midfielder, three midfielders which are more attacking, and two strikers.

Coach: Christopher Kohnhead (M) Age: 53 Colanso City (JEC)

Bench
Forward: Griffin Phoenix-Anderson #68 (M) Age: 34 Nickelson FC
Pheonix-Anderson got some playing time early in the BOF as a substitute for Richman but with the formation change I don't expect him to get any more barring injury. He looked fine for a sub in those games. He played a grand total of 9 minutes in the game Richman was forced into starting due to Korkson's suspension against Kita-Hinode.

Goalkeeper: Madison Richards #72 (F) Age: 31 Nickelson FC
Richards is the backup goalkeeper, and is 31 years old. What more can be said? She did not impress in her games started but wasn't a major liability.

Mid: Audrey Henderson #9 (F) Age: 22 FC Kohnface City
Henderson has played well when given the opportunity the coaching staff just feels Cogginter has played better. The plan at least for the next World Cup is to have Henderson at CAM in a 4-3-1-2 formation and get Horsford out of there. Will Henderson be up to the task is the question though but she does have high upside. She will get playing time at this tournament.

Forward: Thomas Stratford #12 (M) Age: 20 Nickelson FC
Stratford has barely played for the National team but with both Griffin Pheonix-Anderson and Harry Richman getting on with age he could pass them and become the best striker on the bench. He graduated from University last year and now returns to his club of Nickelson to pair with GPA and Madison Richards. Considering this is the Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy, Stratford will get playing time.

Back: Callie Porsha #42 (F) Age: 19 Kohnhead City University
Porsha is the first choice defender off the bench with Vargas having played so poorly, Porsha is ahead of him. The main benefit of her is she can play center back, full back, and wing back. Vargas doesn't have that capability as he is only a center back. She started in Corton's spot in the COH and later parts of qualifying due to her injury and she looked pretty good.

Forward: Harry Richman #77 (M) Age: 32 Team: Barnley FC
Harry Richman has come in clutch for this team. He plays 65 minutes a game when he starts yet is ready to come off the bench and give this team a spark whenever necessary. He has come off the bench before and performed extremely well.

Back: Dylan Vargas #23 (M) Age: 30 Team: Swisston City FC
Vargas what a disgrace. A starter who was so bad he was moved to the last spot on the bench and may never see playing time again for Kohnhead that's how bad he was. I don't want to talk about him. I don't understand why he is still on the team but perhaps the coaching staff sees something in him.

Mid: Al Torgan #21 (M) Age: 27 Team: Capital FC (SYL)
Torgan was a new addition to the squad for the World cup qualifiers as the team needed more midfielders considering four are starters. Torgan has never been that flashy of a player but was just sold to Capital FC in Sylestone.

Mid: Suzanna Barter #60 (F) Age: 18 Team: Real Dawson
Barter is replacing Balmer on the squad as they like the upside that Barter offers more than they like Balmer's as Barter is only 18. Suzanna really emerged last season but will have to try and get past a crowded midfield room.

Mid: Sophie Johnson #7 (F) Age: 19 Team: Kohnhead City FC
The story for Johnson is the same as the story for Barter. Both have lots of talent but may never see serious playing time for the National team with Rallyton, Laker, Cogginter, Henderson, possibly Horsford, and possibly Torgan in front of them.

Back: Taylor Rodar #15 (F) Age: 20 Team: New Capetown Falcons (TAE)
Rodar after leaving Bingham City has been called up to the National team as possibly the second center back off of the bench behind Porsha. Rodar didn't play too well at the DBC and Bingham City were awful last year but they know her skill level and everyone knows a new team in the New Capetown Falcons could mean wonders for her career.

About the Nation
Northwest Kalactin is a nation of 20 million people, the nation has many major city’s with hockey teams in them. The largest cities are Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour And Kempsey the capital and largest city in the nation is Gold Coast. The climate is hot with the summer temperatures getting up to about 110 Fahrenheit at the highest and winter temperatures go down to about 50 at the lowest. The nation plays host to many domestic sports leagues across many different sports including Hockey, Soccer, Basketball, Rugby and many more.

Northwest Kalactin: What to Expect
Of course if you are traveling to Northwest Kalactin you need to bring some shirts and shorts. The average temperature is around 80 degrees all year, however, during the summer it can go up to one hundred degrees. Most stadiums in Northwest Kalactin are either domes or have retractable roofs because during the summer players will easily overheat. The hottest that the temperature that the weather has gotten in the summer is 113 degrees farinheight. The largest cities are Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour and Kempsey. All 3 of these cities have over 1 million people in them but Gold Coast is the largest city with over 2.8 million people in the entire city. Coffs has 1.7 million and Kempsey has 1.2 million. The east side of the nation has very few people having only 2.5 million people. Almost all of the large cities have teams in all of the different sports leagues, however, different regions have different popular sports. The main coastal cities have soccer and gridiron as the most popular sports. The farms inland also like both Soccer and Gridiron but many baseball players also come from the inland rural areas. In the eastern mountains have hockey as the most popular sport but, bandy is also a very popular among kids which makes the nation one of the best in the world in bandy. Down south, soccer and basketball are by far the most popular sports there. The kids in Northwest Kalactin currently are one of the most promising sports generations ever in the nation as they are now putting up some of the best youth teams in the world. Northwest Kalactin is pretty light when it comes to laws however, all visitors and opponents are expected to follow the laws for the duration that they are in the nation. Drinking is permitted for those over 17 and smoking is illegal outside of designated areas. Some of the best textiles industries in the world can be found in Northwest Kalactin as the huge textile factory, Holcomb Textiles headquartered in Byron Bay. Many tech companies are also based in the nation as the Tech Company Startup Fund provides money for those entrepreneurs in the tech section who look to be based in Kalactin.

Where you will play
Image
Gold Coast international football stadium is a very nice stadium it holds up to 104,000 people and is the largest stadium in northwest Kalactin. Many people are surprised that the stadium has a retractable roof even though it is very hot in northwest Kalactin in fact the reason why the roof is there is because of the heat! One time it was 114 degrees Farinheight in Gold Coast so they put the roof up. Another thing to look for at the stadium is the before game tailgating there are many food trucks that stop by there and take advantage of the huge crowds. Lastly, be sure to visit the Northwest Kalactin soccer hall of fame that has many interesting artifacts jerseys and other stuff from Kalactanian football

History of The Team
The Kalactanian National Team has been around since the 79th version of the World Cup. The team started out from quiet beginnings finishing in the quarter finals in the 66th Baptism Of Fire against Filindostan. The 80th World Cup Team was highlighted by Jared Sednah and Wendell Jakerein, who ended up making the team of the qualifiers. Sednah was the top player on the team for the Next 2 cycled as he paired up with Luke Dillan to bring the team close to qualifying. Despite the valiant efforts by Dillan and Sednah the team couldn’t end up qualifying in the 82nd and 81st cups. The FA decided not to enter the team in for the 83rd qualifiers due to corruption in the association. The team was quickly eliminated in the 84th qualifiers. The current team is highlighted by younger players that hope to bring the team to the World Cup the the following years. In the 85th World Cup campaign the team put up one of their best qualifying performances. However, near the end of qualifying the team was shaken by the surprise retirement of the star goalkeeper Wendell Jakerein.

Starters

Strikers:
Luke Dillan Image GCCFC, Age: 36
Dillan is a player that is that is not in his golden years of the 80th and 81st World Cup but still brings strength to the team. He brought prominence to Gold Coast Capital after moving there last year and continues to exceed expectations despite his age. He is a very flashy forward that is able to score a goal for all the fans when needed. His long Free Kicks brought attention to him in highlight clips recently and he can play on anyone. He is surprisingly coming back for another cycle, after being expected to retire after the last cycle, nobody knows what cycle 87 will hold for him.

Jimmy McCarthy Image Dalton United, Age: 26
Jimmy McCarthy was the future of Kalactanian football the second he stepped onto the Project Olimpo campus. He is a natural leader that can lift the spirits of any of his teammates and he brings great talent to the team. He is a bit weak however he makes up for it with his ability to make a move on anyone. Last cycle he was by far the best player on the team, going out and showing his goalscoring ability, and is able to work some magic out there.

Will Sanders Image Murwelldobah FC, Age: 30
Will Sanders is a player that has historically played midfield however he made the switch to midfielder a few years ago. One of the best players on the team he is always focused on making his teammates better through passing. He is a very creative player that likes to express his creativity on the pitch. He was responsible for assists on many of the goal.

Thomas Butler Image AC Itotz Zubia, Age: 18
The future of Kalactanian soccer, is now playing in Audioslavia, and is now with the national team for his first cycle on. He is a magic man by the net, and always seems to come out with the ball in 1-1 battles. He is one of the strongest, and fastest players to ever play for the nation, he will become a great duo with players like Jimmy McCarthey in the next few years, and you can look for him to score many goals. He wants this cycle to be his breakout cycle, and he wants to start it out wi a good AOCAF

Midfielders:
Steve Gilbert Image Toureres War eagles, Age: 31
Gilbert is a player in the middle of his prime. After showing how he could turn the War Eagles from a second tier team to a team earning UICA qualification the NT picked him up. He is a very athletically talented player that can outrun almost anyone on the pitch. He does lack some skills on the first touch but his athleticism helps him excel on the field.

Frank Owens Image Coffs Harbour FC, Age: 33
Owens has been a mainstay if the starting lineup of the NT since the 80th World Cup. He may be entering his last World Cup as he is very prone to injury’s. He plays a very aggressive game and has a fiery temper, things that can get him in trouble on the field. Owens is currently the team record holder for the most Cautions in one tournament, with 7.

Lamar Hall Image Ballina Red Devils, Age: 20
Lamar is on his very first cycle on the National Team, and he is a started already. He had a breakout season and helped the Ballina Red Devils earn theirselves a spot in IFCF play this season. He is the younger brother of established defender Matt Hall, and wants to become a reliable starter on the national team in the coming years. Look for him to pass a lot, he spends very little time with the ball once he gets possession.

Backs:
Matt Hall Image Fryi Frêndê, Age: 25
Matt Hall is another wonderkid that has been around on the team during recent cycles. He recently started playing in the Farfadillian leagues where he continues to develop as a player. Hall is one of the strongest players on the team athletically being one of the fastest on the team.

Joseph Anderson Image FC Harbour City, Age: 29
A newer player just recently called up to the National Team, Anderson has exceeded expectations for the team. He recently just entered his prime and he improves very quickly. He does tack up a large number of injuries though, which is concerning for his future on the team. Anderson is a great on-ball defender and can play physically if needed.

Larry Martinez Image AC Itotz Zubia, Age: 26
Martinez is a new defender to the National squad. He played his only appearance before this when he came in as a sub in a Wonder Cup game against Delaclava. He also is a teammate of young striker Thomas Butler, so look for those 2 to have some good chemistry on the field. Just like his preceding teammate at the position, Jake Dakota, he is a reliable defender that has good ball control.

Goalkeeper:
Mark Romero [img]Flag%20to%20come[/img] CF Bondstad, Age: 25
After taking over from the legend Wendell Jakerein, Romero started the final games of the World Cup 85 qualification. Romero is a very young keeper that can look to become a successful player on the Kalactanian National team. Unlike his preceder, Romero is a player that has very good athleticism. What he lacks though, is the tactical smarts that Jakerein possessed

Subs

Midfielders: Daniel Guidry Image Kempsey United, Age: 32

According to Manager Ázëwyn Fëanáro, Starblaydia will be using the Mike Sarzo Memorial Tournament as a friendly warm-up to the 61st AOCAF Cup. The same squad will be used for both tournaments, and the full makeup of the team is as follows:

Staff
AF. Ázëwyn Fëanáro*, Manager, 4,071 - World Cup 44 & 47 Winner, World Cup Hall of Famer
270 Caps, 71 Goals (Uncapped at Under-21 level)
Fëanáro scored the winner in the 47th Final against Valanora, denying them a title on their own turf and lifting Starblaydia to the mantle of all-time greatest team. Known for her excellent attacking play, range of passing and great eye for goal that lifts her to second in the all-time goalscorers list too, by virtue of a nearly 1-in-4 ratio, Ázëwyn Fëanáro is a symbol of grace, power and beauty from Starblaydia's golden age, some hundred and fifty years ago when the Cup was in its 40s. It is these qualities that the SFA managed to recapture with Fëanáro at the helm, bringing her trademark poise and piercing yell to the touchlines after more than a decade of national failures. She's taken her team to a World Cup Final, but so far all she's lifted is an Under-18 World Cup. Can she lead the team to another piece of silverware?

AC. Aaron Cole, Coach, 42
90 Caps, 54 Goals (7 Caps, 4 Goals at Under-21 level)
The first person to break into the Starblaydi all-time top ten goalscorers in literally generations, Cole had the dubious honour of being the man to finally knock Simeone Di Bradini off out of that same list. His excellent footballing brain, aggression levels, tactical nous and all-round Audioslavian/Brenecian level of shithousery made him a uniquely successful striker in a nation more used to smooth flying strikers and hulking target men. These are the qualities he will try to bring to the national team on a much grander scale.

Goalkeepers
1. Cosmo Leopoldi, GK, 34 - Colonial Sile (Vilita) Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
87 Caps, 0 Goals (12 Caps, 0 Goals at youth level)
Cosmo is, quite simply, the best Starblaydi goalkeeper by a country mile, and has been for the last decade since he took the #1 jersey for the 83rd World Cup. His time at Vilitan siide Colonial Sile will undoubtedly continue for at least another decade, but for Starblaydia he perhaps has just one World Cup left in him before someone else will need to take up the mantle. Only an Under-18 World Cup medal to his name would be a poor return for the man considered the greatest between the sticks for his country since Lucas 'Best in the World' Cable.

12. David Floyd, GK, 26 - Paricone Athletic FC Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
4 Caps, 0 Goals (9 Caps, 0 Goals at youth level)
Though his opportunities for the national team have been limited behind Leopoldi, Floyd seems to be the natural successor. He's just the way they like them in Starblaydia, in the mold of Dacil Taniquentar: big and strong, an imposing presence in the goal and a voice to match, whether berating his defenders or having a go at any striker that dares touch him. He's exactly the sort of person you want as your backup, whether between the sticks or in a fight. Sometimes both.

19. Onish Vadaparthy, GK, 22 - Phraen Palace Image
Uncapped (7 Caps, 0 Goals at youth level)
Vadaparthy has overtaken the elder Eliot Jakobsen for the reserve goalie spot, coming off the back of an encouraging Di Bradini Cup 48 performance. He's tall, thin and lean, but that doesn't stop him from being an excellent shot-stopper and distributor.

Defenders
2. Joel Alberto Filho, RB/RWB, 26 - Tabeck Cefn Druids Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
12 Caps, 2 Goals (16 Caps, 0 Goals at youth level)
Starblaydia's strategic switch to a 4-3-3 with overlapping full-backs could not have come at a better time for Filho, who uses his natural athleticism and stamina to full advantage in the white and purple. Expect to see him flying down the wing and getting the passes and crosses in for the front three, but having to rely on pace to cover the hard defensive yards and close down any forward or left-wingers in the opposition.

3. Henri Apollo, LB, 30 - Ionia United Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
59 Caps, 4 Goals (13 Caps, 0 Goals at youth level)
The slim figure of Henri Apollo brings to mind some of the keenest ball-playing centre-backs of old, but in fact the tall, lean frame hides a fairly vicious competitor, who loves to break into the opposition box and smash the ball into the net. His positional and blocking game is second to none, and while the tackles often come fast and furious, they're always with a singular purpose in mind: fuck the opponent up fairly. His crunching slides and blocks like a stone pillar are legendary at Ionia United, but with the wrong referee, particularly in the international game, he can quickly find himself hitting the showers involuntarily.

5. Falka Kaumolainen*, Captain, CB, 32 - Hallad Reavers Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
88 Caps, 2 Goals (11 Caps, 0 Goals at youth level)
When you watch Kaumolainen play, she recalls two of the great Starblaydi captains: Betanni Marrones and Lex Panarii. Controlled and powerful leadership stemming from the back, with great positioning and a calm head that solidifies the back line, playing out into midfield when appropriate. Very few forwards can beat her, and she has been the rock upon which the Starblaydi backline has relied since the 59th AOCAF Cup and World Cup 84. Took the armband from the retiring Viola Capodonna two years ago, and hasn't looked back, driving Starblaydia onward.

6. Arn Renatovic, CB, 27 - Nidola United Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
30 Caps, 0 Goals (15 Caps, 0 Goals at youth level)
Every decent Starblaydi back line, so the conventional wisdom goes, needs two types of defender. One has to be the playmaker, the sweeper and the calm head with the foot on the ball. The other should be the hulking bull in a pottery shop, clattering into the opposition with strength, power and toughness, putting their laces clean through the ball and into row Z at every opportunity. Arn Renatovic is not the first kind of plater. He's the type to elbow, stamp and kick, all while verbally winding up the opposition at every opportunity, along with being the first face an opponent sees after fouling a Starblaydi player - ususally pressed directly up against their own. Sure, he has more than his fair share of cards, but every team does need a bastard.

13. Lucius Wolffe, C/LB, 25 - Iskara Daii Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
12 Caps, 1 Goals (12 Caps, 0 Goals at youth level)
Smooth on the ball and with an excellent reading of the game, Wolffe's positional play is his main asset, along with a sweet left foot that can ping the ball all over the pitch with ease. Fast and languid, he also fits in as a centreback, able to comfortably play the ball out when required. His lighter frame, however, means he can be buffeted around somewhat by the more physical players.

14. Nick Conway, CB, 23 - Phraen Palace Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
Uncapped (5 Caps, 0 Goals at youth level)
This young centre-back has the potential to go all the way to the top, as he has plenty of the qualities required for the position, along with being exceptional with his feet for a big, strong defender. As the modern game moves on to more and more refined athletic and technical skills, Conway represents the leading edge of this almost technological approach to sport.

20. Andvar Galdarhim^, C/RB, 18 - Karak Ungor Chiefs Image
Uncapped (9 Caps, 1 Goal at youth level)
Coming out of the youth sides, he's the first Dwarf to play for Starblaydia in some thirty years since Dorn Garkadrum won his 66 caps for the side, Galdarhim is most comfortable at right-back, where his boundless energy and pace over short distances is key to his defensive ability. Not always the finest in the tackle, thanks to his short, thick legs, he is however great at intercepting, harrying and pressing the opposition into making mistakes. Often pops up by the side of the opposing penalty area more than his own, Galdarhim is the definition of a shuttle runner, up and down the right flank.

Midfielders
4. Noah Kranendonk, DM, 25 - Cedrus Soundgardia Image
13 Caps, 2 Goals (7 Caps, 1 Goal at youth level)
Filling the positional shoes of one of the greater and beloved Starblaydi captains in recent history was never going to be easy, but Noah Kranendonk seems to have declared himself up to the task, pushing out the more experienced Ortiz entirely from this squad. Though it may be just an experiment on Fëanáro's part, she has entrusted Kranendonk with the role of midfield wrecker - something he loves to do. With long limbs and an excessive level of bravery, you'll often not notice a lot of his defensive contributions from pressing and intercepting, but he'll usually be at the top of the ball-winning charts. Every so often he does something outlandish, too, whether it's blasting in a goal from long range or scything a player down while somehow getting nothing but the ball. If he can keep his standards up in this new position of responsibility, he might just be able to keep it over the next decade.

7. Lucy Saraviva*, R/LM, 29 - Foxchester Raiders Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
66 Caps, 21 Goals (14 Caps, 7 Goals at youth level)
Lucy Saraviva's goalscoring record for a wide midfielder is exceptional, even at national level. For the Foxes, she is a bullet train down either wing, shooting into the box with pace, power and precision. For the national team, in a middle three, she's a whirlwind of energy and movement, always trying to take the ball wide and spread the play in combination with the strikers and full-backs. She's become a vital part of the attacking set-up of the team, and her hard work has more than rewarded her throughout her career.

8. Jewel Maddison*, C/AM, 20 - X Island Marauders (Taeshan)
Uncapped (5 Caps, 2 Goals at youth level)
Giving a starting debut to Jewel Maddison, while leaving the 32 year old Calindra Apelles out of the squad entirely has been a bold decision from Fëanáro. Taking a woman who scored 10 goals in the World Cup campaign 2 years ago and replacing her with an uncapped 20 year old who plays in Taeshan certainly raised some eyebrows, but the Under-21 captain has all the potential in the world to meet and even exceed Apelles' records - the most notable of which is 30 goals in 101 appearances. If Maddison has half the career that Apelles has, most would consider that a success. She plays in the same mold, too, as a central midfielder with all the energy and skills to get forward. While Apelles tended to surge into the box, Maddison has that ability to ghost in when least expected, beign the body that provides the overload and first to any loose ball with a stinging shot.

15. Hayden Shepherd, C/DM, 22 - Widdrington Wolves Image
Uncapped (8 Caps, 0 Goals at youth level)
How do you back up an uncapped young midfielder tasked with being the pivot of arguably the most successful national team in history? Usually the answer is not 'with another uncapped young midfielder', but in this tournament it apparently is. Shepherd is certainly a bright prospect for the future, but for him to edge out Franklin Ortiz over this spot is an almost unheard-of decision by the manager, giving youth their chance.

16. Kristof Faiisa, AM, 28 - Iskara Daii Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
18 Caps, 2 Goals (12 Caps, 1 Goals at youth level)
The Daii's attacking midfield lynchpin seems to have been around the fringes of the national team starting XI for over a decade, but after first playing second fiddle to Calindra Apelles, ow appears to be doing the same for Jewel Maddison. His teamwork and workrate is never in doubt, but it looks like Faiisa will be tasked with being the impact player, the game-changer and the experienced head to come on and calm the nerves, as his game is much more suited to a playmaker and string-puller than it is the all-out frenetic ball of energy that the current starting midfield seems to possess.

21. Emily Williams*, RM, 24 - Jhanna United Image
Uncapped (7 Caps, 1 Goal at youth level)
JUFC's little firecracker down the right, Williams is a solid midfielder who can eat up the space in front of her as she scampers forward with the ball. Solid defensively, she's also adept at working with an overlapping fullback as part of a midfield three, which may explain her inclusion in this side despite never having been involved in the senior team set-up before. Ázëwyn Fëanáro is certainly picking players for the system this time, rather than the other way around, no matter how experienced they are.

22. Sebastien Veilleux, LM, 26 - Sporting Salicus Image
Uncapped (13 Caps, 0 Goals at youth level)
Veillieux makes a fourth uncapped midfielder, which is both a testament to Ázëwyn Fëanáro's desire to give youth a chance in this tournament, as well as the power and solidity of the Capodanno-Apelles-Yamaguchi based midfield that came before them. Veilleux is a decent wide man who plays for an unfashionable team in the form of Sporting Salicus, but his deliveries from out wide are second to none, and counts himself as something of a dead ball specialist. As appears to be the case with all of this side, he has stamina and energy for days.

Forwards
9. Hope Roshanak*, SC, 26 - Malta Lines Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
48 Caps, 25 Goals (17 Caps, 9 Goals at youth level)
At the age of 26, Hope Roshanak will be leading the line for Starblaydia; their main goal threat at this regional championships. After top-scoring for the side two years ago during the World Cup 85 campaign (14 goals in 27 appearances, including a hat-trick over Havynwilde) she'll take up her familiar position at the tip of the 4-3-3 formation. At Malta Lines she's used to being the focus of the side's attacks, supported by up to three midfielders all trying to feed her the ball. In this situation, she has two other strikers around her, working in harmony with her efforts, and it'll be interesting to see the effect on having support beside her, rather than behind her. Debuted against Audioslavia in the 59th AOCAF Cup.

10. Marcus Jimenez, SC, 25 - Iskara Daii Image
25 Caps, 8 Goals (10 Caps, 4 Goals at youth level)
Since making his debut against Magnaterrica on MD4 of World Cup 84 Qualifying, the Iskara Daii forward has made himself a reliable, but not yet vital, part of the national team set-up. He's often in the right place, but so far has been the understudy to a string of players like McCloud, Roshanak and Velasquez. This will be his first senior tournament where he's handed a starting shirt, so it will be all on his shoulders to prove that he really is the man to help take Starblaydia forward. He's a hard worker, no doubt, but those moments of magic are just slightly too few and far between to make him a stand-out name on the team sheet.

11. Betanni Jetvanna*, SC, 22 - Kitara AA (Banija)
12 Caps, 5 Goals (10 Caps, 6 Goals at youth level)
Jetvanna is the up-and-coming young striker for whom pace is their greatest asset. Top scorer for Starblaydia at the dissapointing 10th Under-18 World Cup with two goals, her inclusion in the World Cup 85 squad led to the tally of five in twelve appearances and the nod over Velasquez for this youthful, if still rather conventional, team. Debuted away vs Baggieland on MD6 of WC85 Qualifying.

17. Carmine Velasquez*, SC, 29 - Corinthian Spirits Image - 7th Under-18 World Cup Winner
56 Caps, 13 Goals (13 Caps, 6 Goals at youth level)
Ever since making her debut at the disappointing Games of the XIII Olympiad, Carmine Velasquez has been something of a disappointment herself. Despite being the most experienced member of this side, she's never managed to nail down a place for herself. Certainly, there is a lot of skill there and even potential, but as the years tick by that potential is rapidly shortening. One goal from six appearances along the way to a near-perfect 83rd World Cup, where Starblaydia finished second. No goals at the 46th Di Bradini Cup, then a succession of 1, 2 and 0 goals at the next three major championships. She just didn't manage to set the world on fire, and even when put in a front three throughout the World Cup 85 campaign, her nine goals saw her with the lowest tally of the three (Roshanak, 14; McCloud 11; and even Calindra Apelles got 10 from midfield). So, two yeas later, she finds herself demoted to the bench, with both Jimenez and Jetvanna jumping the queue ahead of her. Can she pull something back to put her name in real consideration for the next World Cup, or has she already peaked?

18. Erik Romaine, SC, 20 - Hecia
Uncapped (6 Caps, 1 Goal at youth level) Image
Romaine is a bit of an enigma, and doesn't yet seem to fit in anywhere. The young forward, yet to make his senior debut, is a promising young player for Hecia FC in Liga Starblaydia, but jsut doesn't fit their type of direct, route-one game. Though he's big, he's not that big; strong, but not that strong. Often deployed out wide where his relatively good pace and passing can be an asset, all signs point to a player who should be in the thick of things when the ball is on the floor, rather than in the air. If the right situation can present itself, Romaine surely will make the time and space he needs to shine, it's just about matching the man with that perfect moment.

23. Omar Al Qubaisi, SC/AM, 18 - Yaton FC (Taeshan)
Uncapped (11 Caps, 3 Goals at youth level)
An exceptionally hard worker, who often appears more in the assist and Key Contribution columns than the goalscoring charts, Al Qubaisi needs to really nail himself down to a position that fits within the new style that Fëanáro is developing across the entire national team setup. Still has plenty of time to develop, and plenty of opportunities for experience in the slightly more cut-and-thrust leagues of Taeshan.

In the sprawling, continent-spanning country of Tequilo - more formally the Allied States of Tequilo or PAT, Patrias Aliadas de Tequilo - football was traditionally a matter for the regional sports authorities. So large and geographically interesting is Tequilo, that it once was formed of nine nations - six Latinique former colonies of the Costelloan Empire and three Indigo city-state empires - who clubbed together as jolly good friends and neighbours to gang up on their dreadfully superior and bossy neighbour to the north, a place they prefer to call Horizonte Oscuro. Anyway that is a history lesson for another cutoff, but in terms of football - or Pitxi in the local dialect - like most things it remained governed on a local basis by the nine football associations. But recently, in an effort to improve the quality of the pitxi on offer (and not at all to make more money, nonono) the nine associations formed one national association, the Unión de Pitxi de Tequilo; and the UPT has formed a national play-off system to decide it's country's annual champion. The authorities also organised the first ever national youth tournament, the Liga-J under-19 league, won by Argón Tacranza.

Ambitiously, it also entered the new national team - which had never existed in all the time pitxi was played across the PAT - into the recent World Cup cycle. Inexperienced in such matters, the UPT has appointed foreign type Dik ten Beuenk, 88, as Team Director. Ten Beuenk oversaw the entry of the tiny Principality of Mustardy into the last World Cup, where an unremarkable campaign exploded into life with an away victory in South Covello, one of the modern giants of the game. That, and the fact that the Red Herrings were not thrashed pillar-to-post through qualifying, won the UPT over when looking for an experienced head to guide this inexperienced nation through a World Cup campaign. Under ten Beuenk and coaches Mauricio Nores for the Baptism of Fire and Isaac Martí for the rest of the cycle, the agave-blues impressed with a BoF third-placed bronze medal, a good showing in World Cup qualifying to finish fourth of 13 in the group, and reaching the knockout stages of the Cup of Harmony.

Now, under the guidance of ten Beuenk, the architect of football modernisation in Tequilo, the national team is looking to build on the success of the popular Liga-J by forming the squads of the future: they have taken an entry into the Under-18 World Cup, and have declared intention to field an under-23 team for the Independent Associations Championship, having opted not to compete in The Land of The Pointy Ears for the Under-21 World Cup.

Under Dik ten Beuenk’s plan, the new teams will also provide a path of success for the national team coaches and managers, with promotions for squad coaches and new opportunities for veteran players looking to move into the world of coaching. Current national team manager Isaac Martí is appointed Director of both junior teams, while his present assistants Juan Manuel Botín and Luka Entenza become head coaches of the under-18s and under-23s respectively. Two of the national team’s most prized veteran players, Callañuapa and Haize Apeiztegui, step up as assistants for each squad.

Phase One of Dik ten Beuenk’s Modernisation Master Plan, Section Two, Sub-Section Six [Create National Junior Teams for Pathways to The Senior National Team] paragraphs two [Players] and three [Staff] is well under way, with the Under-18 team impressing in the Commonwealth of Baker Park to bag a third placed finish and a bronze medal at the Under-18 World Championship. The UPT - that’s the TeqFA to you and me - are planning an under-23 representative team for the upcoming debut in the Independent Associations Championship, but with no under-21 football on the cards, they have jumped on the famous old invitational, the Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy in Sarzonia, as an opportunity to bridge that gap; sending a mostly under-21 team, with a couple of older players likely to get the call for the IAC, and a smattering of the most impressive under-18 returning from Baker Park. The Under-23 management team of Luka Entenza and Haize Apeiztegui will oversee this trip, hoping at least to get a couple of games from the knockout tournament if possible.

BACKROOM STAFF
Head Coach: Luka Entenza, 48, former coach at Argón Tacranza. Intense sort of fellow.
Team Director: Isaac Martí, 56, head coach of the national team and former coach at Motozintla FC.
Coach: Haize Apeiztegui, 33, a professor of the game and brilliant defender coming to the last of his playing days at Unuiĝinta, still playing for the national team as a supporter’s favourite, Tequilo’s most-capped player.
Coach: Terenzio Ramon, 43, much-admired coach at national champions Pitxi-Pitxi 77, enjoying his secondment to the national set-up. He provides the continuity having coached the under-18s at the World Championship
Team Captain: Xaime Medal, AML, 23; former Florentino winger, a vocal player - some might say big mouth, some might say natural leader - who saw out his contract before leaving on a free to 1830 Cathair - much to the chagrin of Las Violetas, who missed out on a sizeable fee for a valuable player.
Vice Captain: Tol Chicote, DC, 19; full name Toltema Iyan Chicote; just completed his breakthrough season at Fábrica Tapalupé after graduating from the youth ranks there and had a very steady first season.

PLAYING STAFF
The selection list for this trip will give clues both for the IAC team and for the future thinking of the national team ahead of the next World Cup. Predominantly made up of under-21s who are breaking through at their domestic clubs, or in some cases already well established, the team includes three of the under-18 World Championship squad with Nicolas Cano, Cio Çenturion and Ostando Bertendona all making the cut; Jaïr Iscla, despite his brilliance in the tournament, is left out, perhaps allowing the dust to settle on the controversy of abuse he took from certain opponents, their fans and media; and to give him some time out of the spotlight. Of the under-21 group, watch out for defender Jacob Emade who gets a well-deserved call-up after winning last season’s Player of The Season in the national youth league, Liga-J; and the national setup have been quick to get José Tavia to commit to Tequilo as his home nation - the wingback has dual nationality and was considering his options, with Tamarindia in the frame to also benefit from his cool calm persona. Meanwhile a handful of older players, probably preparing for under-23 selection, have been named including Tepin Mecatl-Rubio, Itohual (Ito) Ezequiel, Real Gardaresso striker Ecuador and Acacoyagua’s defender Camilo Caira, who has been on the edge of the senior team with a couple of squad call-ups, but no caps to date. Leading this group, and surely destined for the national seniors, is Xaime Medal, who recently bagged a move to Audioslavia to serve as understudy to Rickson Marañón at 1830 Cathair.

The average Tequiloan has an exceedingly high SQ (shambolic quotient) meaning they are really very good at creating and thriving in chaos… they generally get things done in a very roundabout and often nonsensical way, usually with an unbelievably high portion of luck (either good or bad). They are happy to lose, and prefer it in chaotic fashion - it's all about the journey, not the result. 0-7 is much more interesting than 0-1. Apparently.

For the purpose of media marketing, the PR company attached the UPT has decided the national team will take the nickname Los Pitxileros - the imaginative epithet translates as ’The Footballers’ - although the press and fans mostly prefer to use ’the agave-blues’ on account of their shirt colour.

Always happy to collaborate - drop me a TG or call me out in RP (but maybe still drop me a TG in case I miss it…)

Three questions for Delaclava in the MSMT
by Frank Cora

The Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy is upon us. Sixteen teams are gathered in this tournament, and four - including Delaclava - will start in Manchester to narrow down the field. The team is a gathering of established starters, young prospects, and older players getting their first opportunity, but it will nevertheless be a high-quality squad who opens the tournament against Lovisa.

While many pundits have questions about whether the team layout - with starters staying on the bench and reserves coming to the forefront - will be effective, or yield any new stars, I chose to address three more obscure but highly intriguing storylines heading into this AOCAF tune-up:

Will the Cleopatrana SC magic hold up on the international stage?

Two years ago, Cleopatrana SC shocked the United Football League and the country with a league title, upsetting the typical order and knocking down powerhouses like Catherina FC and Steckholl United. Captained by Ryan Keating and helmed by experienced veterans Oliver Andreu, Mike Hamill, and Luke Lemieux in the back, and Baghdasar Parsamyan and Geoffrey Pena in the front, the squad came to life with acquisitions of Keaton Durbridge and Eddie Roberts as well as several young players - Donat Soler in goal, and Timur Zaitsev and Donato Girardi in the midfield. While that is, in hindsight, a phenomenal squad, it was not apparent to pundits at the time, who expected the Pharaohs to once again turn in a respectable mid-table finish. Cleopatrana SC had other plans, taking the title on a dramatic come-from-behind win over Manchester on the last day, with Keating earning MVP honors and Andreu taking the defensive POY award.

The very next year, despite the departures of Durbridge, Roberts, and Girardi, the same squad was quite competitive in earning fourth place in the league. Now most of the title core has gone their separate ways, but the starting lineups reunited many Pharaohs, current and former; Soler in goal, a backline of Lemieux, Andreu, and up-and-comer Arnau Mata, with Keating and Durbridge again in the midfield. Many have found greener pastures - Lemieux starts an unexpected new chapter at Lotus Park in Brenecia, Zaitsev’s development continues at Euran team Workers Union, and Durbridge’s career has absolutely taken off as the national team captain and a force at Farf club Di Maozöxê. But for this, the Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy, the boys are back together.

The question is, can the players who teamed up for a Delaclav league title elevate their game to face squads like Starblaydia, Krytenia, and Baker Park? Those established programs are no Catherina FC - they are true forces to be reckoned with, who have the ability to decimate inferior defenses.

The answer, ultimately, will lie somewhat with the contributions of each individual. There are no questions about Durbridge - he is an offensive talent and an effective defender, a fighter and a gamer, who has led his national team into the fire against the world’s best and come out, at worst, to tell the tale. Luke Lemieux has undoubtedly risen to the forefront of the program, not only with his willingness to step up at a time when half the permanent team was suspended, but his continued excellence that kept him in a re-fortified lineup. Keating (more on him later) is a question mark with his loss of form prior to his departure, but he is nothing if not resilient, and he is at least tested against a handful of quality squads like Starblaydia, Cosumar, and Cassadaigua. Then there’s youngsters Soler and Mata - who show a lot of promise - and Andreu - who’s been waiting for this call for a long time, and he wouldn’t be getting it if he weren’t ready for the show.

Ultimately, with the way these players have worked together in the past, and still team up effectively - the Cleopatran component of the squad will easily be greater than the sum of its parts.

Can Ryan Keating and Alexei Gusev play their way back into the rotation?

This is an unconventional lineup - one that’s designed to test new talents and provide opportunities while also inducing the safety net of established national team leaders. One of the more intriguing lines is the return of two veterans, with the chance to prove they can still fit in with a Delaclav program that is bursting at the seams with talent and skill.

Let’s start with Ryan Keating. The Cleopatrana captain was originally a starting midfielder for the Phoenixes going into AOCAF 60 and the Wonder Cup. Like the rest of the team, he was finding his rhythm, and he was a crucial player when the Phoenixes eventually found their game and ripped off five straight victories in the Wonder Cup consolation bracket.

Then Tim Landers made the questionable decision to alter the team’s changing and fit in more of the marquee skill players in the midfield, meddling with the tactics the squad was just starting to figure out. This forced Keating into a somewhat unfamiliar central defensive midfield role, almost doubling as a high center back. The expectations were unclear, Keating struggled with the new position - and with the step up in competition, just like his teammates. It was clear that Brent Ritchie was much better suited for the position, and Delaclava started winning at the same time that Ritchie got more playing time. Tough luck for Keating.

It’s unclear what the balance of factors was next - the drop in morale, lack of communication with the coaches, the ever-murky scenario of intrasquad lust and promiscuity - but with several games remaining in the World Cup 85 qualifiers, Keating had deserted. Once the dust had finally settled on the Phoenixes campaign, and critics began to contemplate the future, questions about Keating kicked around:

Does he still have what it takes on the field? Is he motivated to rejoin and play for his country? Is he a positive presence on the squad, or is he a burden, a problem, a source of needless drama? Is he a victim of a toxic culture, or a bad actor who torpedoed a squad that was just starting to find his best form?

Only time will tell on the last two questions, but it seems he has been welcomed back to the fold by manager Johannes Detmer, and captain and friend Durbridge, whom Detmer has trusted to give input into the personnel. And Keating hardly needed to be drafted into service - there are plenty of midfielders in the pool. If Keating wasn’t 100% ready to go, someone else would be.

That leaves the quality of his play - which wasn’t lacking last season, in which he returned to Cleopatrana SC and earned Best XI league honors. The question remains if that’s good enough for tougher international competition, but Detmer has also put him in a more familiar, possession-oriented role with opportunities to distribute, and free license for greater aggression. All the pieces are there for a Ryan Keating resurgence - and he has anywhere from one to four games to put them together.

It’s a little different for Gusev - who was a longtime fixture on the Delaclav squad, but almost never a starter. He was unfortunate to be a few years older than, but just behind Lukas Meyer at right wing and striker. Regardless of the numerous tactical changes imposed on the Phoenixes, Gusev was always an odd man out of the starting lineup. But he persisted as a capable substitute and had his moments, particularly a game-winning goal in the Wonder Cup.

That was until Detmer took over and brought in a 3-5-2 formation and hot prospect Artem Kohut, who took the team by storm. That opened the door for Gusev to get squeezed out, and when it was Erik Hovhannisyan who took the impetus to prove himself and turned in clutch performances at the end of the campaign, that was curtains for Alexei, who was left off the 23-man squad for the Cup of Harmony.

Gusev’s play unquestionably suffered at First City, who scored just 35 goals in 44 games and finished 11th of 12. He was harshly criticized at times for a lack of effort, but it’s not apparent that he wasn’t trying at all; he just looked frequently lost and demoralized, and once First City started on the wrong foot, the situation never got better.

Fortunately, Gusev’s found himself a fresh start at Harbor, a club in nearby Mriin, and Detmer has afforded him this new opportunity to come alive again. A foreign team in an elite league, a starting role in an international tournament - it’s all on a trial basis, to be sure, but he’s now seeing the windows that previously opened for his twin brother, center back Valentin. Some pundits have posited that Alexei losing the opportunity to play alongside his brother, while faced with the reality that he was not measuring up in importance or popularity, heavily weighed on him and contributed to his shocking performance at the club level.

To Gusev’s credit, it is not easy being a twin. He and Valentin play on opposite ends of the field, yet comparisons of skill and experience are always present - and neither easy nor fair for Gusev to handle. This is the first tournament in which Valentin was not selected for the national team, and while Alexei has always professed to enjoy playing with his brother, he surely must appreciate to step out of the shadow of his more accomplished sibling.

Alexei is being entrusted to generate scoring opportunities and tallies for a highly offensive minded squad. If he comes through, he can not only measure up to the things Valentin has done on the field, but step forward and carve out a career renaissance in his own right.

Which version of Keaton Durbridge will show up?

Even for a football program built on national pride, toughness, and determination, Keaton Durbridge is one of the most competitive and fiery players in Delaclav history. The fantastic quality of play aside, his leadership has served his team well, carrying them to many solid performances, winning streaks, and triumphs. His personality has also been on display in losses and slumps, the frustration boiling over, although he has generally found a way to vent that in a productive manner to inspire his team.

None of that really fits with the spirit of the Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy, a high-level but still cordial tournament that is focused on advancing and funding cancer research and treatment.

Durbridge’s past history, particularly against the Stars, doesn’t suggest he is entirely on board with the more friendly nature of the tournament. Shortly after a 2-1 friendly loss at home to the Stars, Delaclava and Sarzonia were drawn in the same World Cup qualifying group, and slated to open the tournament in Delaclava. Instead, the two FA’s arranged to play first in Woodstock, celebrating the successful treatment of a viral outbreak as well as the reopening of sporting events to the public. After the opening ceremony, the Stars won the match 6-4. At the time, Durbridge was quoted as saying, "I don't really give a shit about this being a feel good match," expressing his disappointment with his team’s performance and clashing with then-manager Tim Landers, who took a more diplomatic approach in celebrating the renewed health of their rivals.

In the return match, the DFA slated Sarzonia to play the first match at the new Pride of Manchester. Again, the match was preceded with pomp and circumstance, officially unveiling the venue. And again, the Stars were victorious, 5-3, a second victory over the southern Cyaneans, which proved crucial when the Stars eventually clinched World Cup qualification by just two points. Durbridge lit a fire under his team after they went down 2-0 in five minutes, but the Phoenixes could not recover, and Durbridge went so far as to exit the field after the final whistle without greeting the opponents.

Not to mention, the Phoenixes just lost again to the Stars, 3-1 in a friendly in Nicksia. They’ve been different iterations of the Delaclav squad in different situations, but Durbridge has played 360 minutes against his country’s most intense rivals and has not a point to show for it.

The DFA clearly does not have a problem with Durbridge’s approach, nor have Landers or Detmer asked him to change. If it is any indicator, the fiery Durbridge is still the captain of the squad, and the more mild mannered, laissez-faire Tim Landers got asked to pack his bags, which he’s now taking with him to the assistant manager job for the Chromatika national team. But surely the DFA wants him to take it down a notch for a goodwill tournament before the real challenge of AOCAF begins?

It seems very possible he will, for two reasons. First, Durbridge is captaining a side with a lot of prospects and developing players, even with the regular starters waiting in the wings. Durbridge is the only regular starter who remains in that role for this tournament. He understands his responsibility to encourage this new crop of players, promote the growth of future stars, even if that sacrifices some immediate results. It’s not that this tournament isn’t important - it’s just not the big one, and Durbridge wants to be ready for the big one - especially if the Delaclava-Krytenia World Cup bid succeeds and the Phoenixes automatically step into the Finals. Furthermore, this is a role that Durbridge actively embraces. Reports indicate that Detmer heavily relied on Durbridge when compiling a new roster for the remainder of the World Cup qualifiers and the Cup of Harmony, and Durbridge smartly recommended players like Artem Kohut, Keghart Nazaretian, and Ruben Albert, as well as keeping temporary replacements like Zaitsev and Lemieux. When it came time to consider reinstating suspended players, Durbridge and Detmer were conservative in only letting back the three more pre-eminent stars in Pavel Cicak, Donato Girardi, and Rhydian Campbell - none of whom were selected for MSMT or AOCAF. Durbridge is hungry for victories now, but he’s also wise enough to hold off on small pickings and enjoy a feast later.

Second, Durbridge really does understand circumstance. He was noticeably more amicable following the friendly defeats to the Stars than the qualifying losses, and that pattern has extended across all opponents. The matches against Sarzonia attracted more attention simply due to the opponent and the circumstances surrounding the matches, but Durbridge has been similarly invested in the outcomes of games against any other adversary. Durbridge appreciates sportsmanship, respect, even niceness - but when all the chips are on the table, that’s where his focus goes. It’s an admirable approach, and it’ll take the Phoenixes far once they get all their ducks in a row.

But for now, Durbridge will appreciate the purpose of this tournament itself, as well as his team’s presence in it. It’s highly unlikely the Pride of Manchester will see another furious walkoff.

Sarzo Memorial Trophy another testing ground for BP
by Oliver Stanley
The Post Soccer Correspondent

Manchester, Deleclava--The Commonwealth National Team will look remarkably different than what most people familiar with the squad are used to when they open play here in the Mike Sarzo Memorial Tournament regionals against The Gothanita Isles at the Pride of Manchester ground.

Jen Prescott & Will Barnard will be in charge of a 20 player roster made up of several players looking to build upon their solitary senior team cap earned during World Cup 85 qualifying, as well as few others who will be making their debut; the lone household name in the team is Veronica Navarro, who will be making her first appearance for the NT following her maternity leave that kept her out of both the last AOCAF and the entire WC cycle. The Hamilton Wanderers Ladies star helped her club to a top-5 finish while sitting out the international schedule, and is now looking to reclaim a starting role at a position that has gotten quite crowded while she's been away.

"Yeah, everyone who played there (right wing) really shined through the whole cycle. I know coming back, I'm fourth choice at minimum right now, so I know I'm going to have produce, adapt to a different role, or make Mary-Fran (fellow NT player Maria Fernandez) think it's time to retire!" (laughter)

Navarro admits she's lost a step after giving birth and being away from the game, with her role at Wanderers undergoing a change last term.
"I played inside quite a bit during the season, because it's that initial burst over a couple of yards that you lose, but the rest of it comes back pretty quick. I told Renz (her close friend and teammate Lorenzo Taborn) he needs to be looking over his shoulder when I come back!" (laughter)

Prescott said she has a lot of optimism for this squad, some of whom she's managed in U21's, but many more she's only had limited exposure to. "We've made a conscious effort to use the available pool more frequently in situations like this; we've got plenty of excellent players that unfortunately just can't get break into squads for the World Cup or the AOCAF. It's exciting to get a chance to see this group. not to mention having Roni back to provide leadership and enthusiasm."

South Newlandia to participate in Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy for good cause

South Newlandia is still new in the worlds of international soccer, as they are only a single World Cup cycle into international football. After an quarterfinal appearance in the Baptism of Fire, the team finished fourth in Group 13 of the qualifiers for the 85th World Cup a year ago. This was enough to be invited into the Cup of Harmony, where they were eliminated in the Round of 32. When the team heard about the opportunity to play for a good cause, namely for cancer research, they jumped at the opportunity. The coaches will use the games as a chance to test some strategies for the upcoming CE and World Cup Qualifiers, and hope for an interesting first game.

Complete squad for South Newlandia

Coaching team

Head Coach: Robert Wolverine (45)

Assistant Coach: Michael White (39)

Goalkeeper Coach: Matthias Boyle (41)

All of the above have been on the team for 38 official games.

For all players and coaches, only games from official tournaments (BoF, WCQ, WC, CoH, CE) are counted, excluding friendly matches.

Regular starting eleven
Image

GK: #1 Mikhail Trischuk (27 years old) (35 matches played, 47 conceded goals, 0 assists) Ratzupalfu Rhinos (SNL) CAPTAIN
Mikhail Trischuk is the captain of the team, and he is the reason the team is where they are today. His numerous saves have helped the team countless times, and his abilities as a captain are also in high regard. At 27, he is in the best years of his career, and he can frustrate entire offenses on good days. The goalkeeper of the best defensive team in the SNSL has often saved the team, and will be the player to watch in the MSMT.

LB: #2 Dhruv Roy (25 years old) (30 matches played, 5 scored goals, 4 assists) Valley Wanderers (SNL)
Dhruv Roy is very different to Raphael Moreno. While Moreno focuses on defending, Roy can often be found in the opponents half. Especially after corners, his heading abilities can be dangerous. His long passes are also strong, but when it comes to pure defending against strong opponents, he isn’t as strong.

LCB: #17 Jack Schroeder (28 years old) (29 matches played, 1 scored goal, 1 assist) Elephant Valley FC (SNL)
Jack Schroeder debuted in the Baptism of Fire as well, but he played much better in the World Cup Qualifiers. He is arguably the best defender, and his well-timed tackles have saved the team quite a few times. At 28, he is on the peak of his career.

RCB: #30 Manuel O’Neill (32 years old) (24 matches played, 0 scored goals, 0 assists) Royal Puncakpura (ERM)
Manuel O’Neill is the oldest player of the squad at 32. He debuted in the World Cup Qualifiers, and he won the battle for the start against Tommy Anderson and Karl Meyer. He directs the defense, but he is often to slow to stop fast strikers. As he is ageing, he will probably retire in the next three years. Until then, he moved to a top team in Eraman, and hopes to have a nice end to his career.

RB: #4 Raphael Moreno (31 years old) (27 matches played, 0 scored goals, 1 assist) Ruditown Guards (SNL)
Raphael Moreno has also debuted in the World Cup Qualifiers, and he also took the start instantly. With his wealth of experience, he has made the right side saver, but he and O’Neill aren’t as fast. Because of that, the right side has problems against fast players on the left side.

DM: #6 Kevin Mohamed (21 years old) (33 matches played, 1 scored goal, 2 assists) Nagelti Rovers (JEC)
Kevin Mohamed is the player in Defensive Midfield for the team. While he isn’t the strongest player on the position, South Newlandia lacks viable alternatives. He is a solid defender, but he isn’t great at developing and starting plays for the offense, often slowing things down. At twenty-one years old, he also has a lot to learn still. His move to Jeckland was surprising for some, but he is hoping to improve his game there.

LM: #9 Corban Green (20 years old) (28 matches played, 1 scored goal, 12 assists) Jecken Newport (SNL) CORNERS
Corban Green is the youngest player in the starting formation at just twenty years old. His relative lack of experience is made up with fantastic amounts of talent. His shot isn’t as dangerous, while his flanks and corners are among the strongest ones in the country. Due to problems with his knee, he frequently missed games, but he seems to be fit right now.

RM: #13 Patrick McMora (23 years old) (36 matches played, 4 scored goals, 11 assists) Walstreim Lions (SNL)
Patrick McMora is the player with the most matches for South Newlandia, having missed only two games. Despite being only 23 years old, he is already playing great. His passes and flanks can be deadly, and he is frequently able to get good flanks into the middle. He hasn’t been at his best recently, but can hopefully bounce back soon.

OM: #7 Finnley Wallis (26 years old) (32 matches played, 9 scored goals, 5 assists) Sophie City Royals (SNL) FREE KICKS
Finnley Wallis is one of the most important players of the team. Depending on the situation, he can act as a third striker or even help out in defense. He debuted in the Baptism of Fire, and he is also responsible for free kicks. At 26 years, Wallis is well in his strongest years, and needs to be defended well.

ST: #11 Brandon Irving (22 years old) (31 matches played, 12 scored goals, 4 assists) Barnley FC (KND)
Brandon Irving was already part of the squad during the Baptism of Fire, and leads the team in goals at twelve scored goals. Despite his talent, he is largely inconsistent. If he plays well, Irving is hard to stop. He moved to the current title holders of Kohnhead recently, hoping for success abroad. His old club, the Walstreim Lions, had replaced him with a star from Squidroidia.

ST: #41 Simon McCabe (30 years old) (20 matches played, 11 scored goals, 3 assists) Elephant Town FC (SNL) (PENALTYS
Simon McCabe debuted in the World Cup Qualifiers, and he got a start almost instantly. So far, is is the most efficient striker at 1 goal for two games, on average. He is also responsible for penalties. At 30 years old, he may already be past his strongest days, but he is a force to be dealt with.

Substitutes

GK: #33 Rufus Rigby (21 years old) (4 matches played, 6 conceded goals, 0 assists) Ruditown Guards (SNL)
Rufus Rigby is the main replacement for Mikhail Trischuk. He debuted in the Baptism of Fire, and experience is the only thing separating him from Mikhail Trischuk. As time goes on, he will most likely get to be the main South Newlandian goalkeeper.

GK: #12 Abdullah Rowley (30 years old) (0 matches played, 0 conceded goals, 0 assists) Malta FC (INS)
Despite being on the team for the Baptism of Fire World Cup Qualifiers, and Cup of Harmony, Abdullah Rowley has never played an international match for the Elephants. Both Trischuk and Rigby are stronger goalkeepers than him, but in an emergency, he will be ready. He has moved to Indusse in an attempt to live new adventures, as his career will come near its end eventually.

LB: #18 Marcos Pit (25 years old) (9 matches played, 0 scored goals, 0 assists) Southwestern Islanders (SNL)
Marcos Pit has joined the team for the World Cup Qualifiers, and he the main replacement for Dhruv Roy. He is a solid defender, but different to Roy, he is neither strong with headers nor long passes.

CB: #3 Karl Meyer (24 years old) (15 matches played, 0 scored goals, 0 assists) Elephant Valley FC (SNL)
Karl Meyer was already playing for the Elephants during the Baptism of Fire, but his relative inexperience and mediocre footballing abilities made him lose the battle for the starting positions.

CB: #8 Tommy Anderson (23 years old) (23 matches played, 0 scored goals, 1 assist) Anchors FC (CMT)
Tommy Anderson has also been part of the squad since the Baptism of Fire, but he has lost his starting position. He remains a very possible alternative, possibly even ahead of Karl Meyer. His move to Chromatika surprised most, but the restructuring of FC Rüsselsheim made it inevitable.

RB: #44 Gustafe Wright (28 years old) (1 match played, 0 scored goals, 0 assists) Ineton City (SNL)
Wright is one of the less experienced players on the team with only a single match played. His club, Ineton City, had been in hot water last year, but managed to hold on. Robert Wolverine seems to stick to his theme of using experienced defenders, as he is 28 years old already.

LM: #19 Donald Lancaster (21 years old) (15 matches played, 0 scored goals, 1 assist) Walstreim Lions (SNL)
Donald Lancaster is one of the players that already played for the Elephants during the Baptism of Fire, and is the main replacement for Corban Green. He was not been very successful so far, and is still waiting for his first international goal.

RM: #24 Jarod Stuart (27 years old) (11 matches played, 0 scored goals, 2 assists) Valley Wanderers (SNL)
Jarod Stuart is the main replacement for Patrick McMora since the World Cup qualifiers. He is frequently subbed in for McMora, but so far, he had little success.

OM: #16 Abdurahman Bishop (22 years old) (16 matches played, 2 scored goals, 3 assists) Jecken Newport (SNL)
Abdurahman Bishop joined the team for the World Cup Qualifiers, and he fought with Finnley Wallis for the start in offensive midfield. The 22 year old is still lacking experience, but he may be a solid alternative to Finnley Wallis.

OM: #21 Adam Weiss (19 years old) (0 matches played, 0 scored goals, 0 assists) Keva Rogianel 09 (MAC)
Adam Weiss is the youngest player of the squad at nineteen years old, and he is also one of the few players currently not playing in South Newlandia. He was drafted in the Maccian Football league, and was selected as the thirteenth pick by Keva Rogianel 09. He will likely not play, as both the left and the offensive midfield are already filled with very skilled players.

ST: #48 Bjorn Cohen (20 years old) (19 matches played, 5 scored goals, 4 assists) Jecken Newport (SNL)
Bjorn Cohen has been part of the Elephants since the Baptism of Fire, but an injury made him miss quite a lot of games. He isn’t quite fit now, either, but always brings power from the bench.

ST: #50 Michael Glossman (25 years old) (4 matches played, 2 scored goals, 0 assists) Kinjestad Soccer (SNL)
At 25 years old, he is in the prime of his career, but he only got selected for the Cup of Harmony. He came in strong with two goals at the Cup of Harmony, and might replace McCabe one day.

The Gothanita Isles makes international debut in Delaclava
Manchester, Delaclava - As a warm up for the national team before the team's first major competition in the Baptism of Fire, the Gothanita Isles is honored to be able to make their debut in Delaclava, with Jurica Bouchard, 54 and Silas Unterbrink, 46, being co-managers of the team.
The Gothanita Isles will play in Manchester, Pride of Manchester Stadium, for the group stage, where the winner of the group stage will progress to the regional semifinals. The group consists of Delaclava and Lovisa, teams that have recently made their return to international football, as well as Baker Park, a team who obtained 4th place at the last World Cup. All 3 presents different challenges for the Red Devils, and serve to allow the Gothanitan team to gain experience playing some of the top sides in football in the process.
First, let us talk about the current co-managers of the team. Under The Gothanita Isles' 4 state, 1 isles system, the best players from the teams of the member states will come together to represent The Gothanita Isles in international competitions such as the World Cup Qualifiers. For this team, the co-managers selected are Jurica Bouchard, hailing from North Handoria, who is the former manager of Bakariksta FC and current manager of North Handoria National Team; as well as Silas Unterbrink, hailing from Hallikshire, who is the former manager of Daris Si Solam and current manager of the Hallikshire National Team, an appointment which he has gotten just recently. Both managers are very similar in terms of playing style, hoping that their team place their priorities on preventing the opponent to score, and going for counter-attacks. Possession and control of central midfield is key to their strategy, which both managers have led Bakariksta FC and Daris Si Solam to do in the past. However, one key change that they have made from their traditional strategy would be to dig deep and defend, something they have argued is key "to stopping top sides". Rather then having a balanced system, the priority would be placed on defence, with players practicing man-to-man marking, as well as playing rather dirty in the process. Fouls and yellow cards would be common-place, as well as the team's emphasis on utilising set-pieces.
We move on to the player choices for this tournament. 3 goalkeepers were picked for this tournament, as seen below:
Goalkeepers
#1 - Thulile Bolkvadze, 27 - M (NHA) - GK - Arenes FC
#12 - Celsus Becket, 22 - M (SJR) - GK - Hangshire FC
#23 - Seo-Yun Gage, 24 - M (OKN) - GK - Alor Hangor FC

Thulile Bolkvadze is an excellent first choice keeper, having been awarded the Golden Gloves Award for being the best goalkeeper of the season twice now. The second choice is not clear, but Becket and Gage has been drafted into this national team, with possible opportunities for both to test out their capabilities.
Defenders
#2 - Jeanette Ross, 24 - F (NHA) - LB - Arenes FC
#3 - Gerhard Abraham, 28 - M (HKR) - RB - FC Tyrani
#5 - Den Benjaminson, 26 - M (SJR) - CB - Manclester United
#6 - Adolf Stenger, 28 - M (SJR) - CB - Manclester City

#13 - Ayokunle Christian, 30 - M (SJR) - LB - Holy Kangarsta FF
#14 - Charlee Harel, 24 - M (HKR) - RB - FC Tyrani
#16 - Timotheos Dunn, 26 - M (HKR) - CB - Daris Si Solam
#17 - Harrison Ihejirika, 30 - M (NHA) - CB - Bakariksta FC

No Hallikshire goalkeeper may have made the squad, but the surprise was the lack of a defender from Otksarin. A mix of young and older defenders complete this list, with the usual suspects making the first choice. Benjaminson was paired to partner with Stenger, similar to what is being used in the South Jeolerina national team. FC Tyrani's Gerhard Abraham was selected as first choice over Charlee Harel, which is interesting because both rightback's roles are reversed when it comes to the Hallikshire National Team or the club squad. Maybe the coaches prefer Abraham's height advantage over Harel's ability to move forward.
Midfielders
#4 - Sardar Chaplin, 25 - M (NHA) - DCM - Arenes FC
#8 - Remus McQueen, 24 - M (NHA) - DCM - Arenes FC

#15 - Erkin Aksoy, 30 - M (OKN) - DCM/CB - Bongali United
#7 - Grigorii McCrory, 26 - M (NHA) - LM/LW - Arenes FC
#10 - Ladislava Tyler, 28 - F (HKR) - ACM/CM - Daris Si Solam
#11 - Cyneburga London, 31 - M (SJR) - RM/RW - Manclester City

#18 - Stefanie Salzwedel, 26 - F (NHA) - LM - Trieste Rangers
#21 - Chloe Brewster, 27 - F (NHA) - ACM/CF - Arenes FC
#22 - Vladan Bloxam, 22 - F (OKN) - RM/RW - Royal Tyakrita FC

A 4-2-3-1 formation is main formation for the national team, so both holding midfielders from Arenes FC was selected. The both of them have performed really well at the club level, and it remains to be seen whether they can replicate their form on the national stage. Bloxam's choice is the most surprising one, as there are many better substitutes for the positions. However, it is likely that the coaching team wants to groom Bloxam to become the replacement for London when London retires.
Forwards
#9 - Abdelkader Kartal, 25 - M (OKN) - CF - Bongali United
#19 - Salwah Sadık, 31 - M (OKN) - CF - Bongali United
#20 - Marino Barros, 27 - M (SJR) - CF/LW - Holy Kangarsta FF

Bongali United, champions of the 23rd Gothanitan Football League, produces the best strikers, and it is no surprise that 2 of their players made the cut. Kartal, vice-captain of Bongali United, takes his undisputed spot at the front, and hopes that his 3-time Golden Boot performance allows the team to get just enough goals.

Style: 0 (balanced between offensive and defensive)
Formation: 4-4-2
Choose My Goalscorers: Y
Godmod Goalscoring Events: Y (stuff like deciding who scores a PK, who passes to whom and how the goal's scored is cool. Weird shit is not.)

=================================

Manager: Kevin Connelly (58 years old)
Connelly agreed to come out of retirement to help novice manager Bryan Ostrom with learning the ropes of being an in-match manager during AOCAF, and agreed to one more go as an assistant manager during World Cup 84 qualifying. He is more defensive minded than Ostrom is. He takes over the team after Ostrom's suicide.
Assistant Manager: Kevin Wilson (56 years old)
The former "B-Stars" national team manager previously served as the AOCAF team's manager, but now steps in as an assistant for the main national team with Connelly's ascension to manager. He takes over the more offensive role from Ostrom.

HOME GROUND: Dave Wilson Stadium, Woodstock (105,690 capacity, natural grass field); alternate home ground i Joe Gibbs Stadium in Woodstock (75,900 capacity)

Roster (Starters in bold)

GOALKEEPERS
1 Carlton Sandt, 20, 6-foot-3, 215 pounds (Lakiska SC, Banijan Soccer League)
Sandt is the younger brother of legendary Stars goalkeeper Horace Sandt. He won the starting job for the Wanderers as a true freshman and led a previously downtrodden side to the national semifinals. He has catlike reflexes and is quick off his line. Can get too aggressive.
30 Paolo Gomes, 26, 5-foot-9, 165 pounds (Portland Timbers)
Gomes recently migrated to Sarzonia and earned a spot on the Stars national team with his quickness in the box. Plays a lot on instinct.

DEFENDERS
4 Charlie King, 25, 5-foot-11, 155 pounds (Saugerties Snakes)
King plays as a defensive-oriented fullback, often marking the opposing team's top striker. He relies more on positioning and reading his opponent's tendencies and body language to figure out where to run than on speed. He's not exactly a burner.
5 Tommy Benignati, 28, 6-foot-2, 200 pounds (Wilmington FC)
The older brother of Marco Beningnati, Tommy plays a much more rugged style than Marco does. Can play sweeper in a three-back lineup.
7 Matt Taylor, 23, 6-feet, 185 pounds (Burlington Browns)
Taylor's speed lends itself to being a fullback, but he plays halfback for the Browns. He has a tendency to struggle with more physical forwards and offensive midfielders.
13 Russ Howard, 34, 5-foot-10, 170 pounds (Nicksia Knights)
Howard is on the roster as much for his veteran leadership and for being a coach on the pitch as he is for his manmarking abilities. He and Taylor are rooming together during qualifying.
18 Ben Russell, 29, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, Rochester Renegades
In his first season as team captain of the Renegades, he led the team to a Sarzonian Football Confederation championship, resulting in the team's promotion to the Cyanea League. If he's on the pitch in the event Howard gets subbed for, he will don the captain's armband. He is a reserve halfback for the Stars.
22 Carmela Bowen, 27, 5-foot-8, 145 pounds, Woodstock Justice
Brown plays fullback for the Justice, a Sarzonian women's football team, and typically marks whomever the playmaking midfielder is. Her stamina earned her a spot on the national team.
6 George Morrison, 33 M 6'2 185 pounds, Nicksia Knights
Morrison is the only Stars player with significant international experience prior to this year, having competed in an AOCAF 10 years ago. He is here to help provide veteran leadership and bench depth.

MIDFIELDERS
8 Ernie Mabree, 25, 5-foot-10, 175 pounds (FC Corcorran)
Mabree has one of the better left-booted shots in the Sarzonian league structure and is one of the fastest players in Sarzonia. He'll play an important role in Sarzonia's offence.
10 Brady Reynolds, 28, 6-foot-2, 185 pounds (Portland Timbers
Donning the 10 shirt for the Stars, Reynolds can be very creative with the ball and will often take corner kicks and free kicks. Predominantly a right-booted player, but he's worked a lot during the offseason on improving with his left boot.
20 Clayton Wilson, 21, 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, (Woodstock Wild) Captain
A grandson of legendary Stars forward Brian Wilson and great-grandson of coach Dave Wilson, Clayton is not just a fourth generation star among the Stars, he served as the playmaker for the Under 21 Stars and is a sterling wing player on the Wild.
18 Carlos dos Santos, 24, 5-foot-11, 175 pounds (Woodstock Wild)
A right wing player, he will sometimes be called upon to take free kicks if Reynolds is unable to for some reason.
16 Trisha Collins, 31, 5-foot-6, 125 pounds (Portland Thorns)
Collins will assume the same role with the national team that she does for the Thorns in Sarzonia's women's football league as a defensive midfielder and general pest.
28 Travis D'Agostino, 29, 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, (Wilmington FC)
D'Agostino will provide depth for the defensive midfield for the Stars. He starts for Wilmington in that role.
30 Erik Swann, 23, 5-foot-11, 175 pounds (Portland Timbers)
Swann's strength is being a late-match offensive substitute who can score in a pinch.

FORWARDS
11 Cayden Aguirre, 31, 5-foot-10, 170 pounds (Nicksia Knights)
Aguirre is the creative forward on the squad with an ability to pinch hit as a playmaking midfielder in late-match situations in the event of defensive-minded substitutions.
21 Jake Campos, 20, 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, (Portland Timbers)
Campos is a straight up target player in the front line. His leaping ability makes him a prime candidate for headers in the box off corner kicks and indirect free kicks. He played on the Junior Stars team that competed in the most recent AOCAF.
17 Mek'hi West, 32, 6-foot-3, 215 pounds (Woodstock Wild)
West is similar in style to Campos, but with West 18 months removed from a torn ACL, he's still working toward being match fit for a full 90 minutes. He can give a good 45-50 minutes at a time before he has to be substituted for when he's a starter.
19 Holly Cambrio, 25, 5-foot-7, 145 pounds (Woodstock Justice)
Cambrio adds flair and ball movement skill and the ability to serve as a sparkplug off the bench, but would be a starter for a women's national team if that competition got resurrected.

Twelve minutes after Sarzonia's match against Megistos kicked off, Kevin Connelly was already fuming.

Robertson had just drawn first blood for Megistos and the Stars were playing like the match was merely an exhibition instead of a tournament that Sarzonia took seriously. He made a mental note to let his team have it at halftime if they didn't get their shit together.

He didn't have to worry. The sold out crowd at Mike Sarzo Stadium noticed the team's lackadaisical play and let loose a torrent of boos. "Get your fucking heads out of your arses and back in the match!" one particularly loud fan screamed.

The fan drew the ire of defender Charlie King, but both captain Clayton Wilson and fellow defender Russ Howard physically got in King's way.

"We're playing like shit," Howard said.

"Best way to quiet that bloke is to start taking this match seriously," Wilson added. "Let's start playing with a bit more urgency." He would quickly gather the team in a huddle and make the same point that Connelly and roughly 78,000 angry Sarzonia supporters were making.

Consider the wakeup call answered. Jake Campos scored twice, on assists from Brady Reynolds and Wilson to give Sarzonia the halftime lead. Mek'hi West and Cayden Aguirre would notch the other goals as Sarzonia easily outclassed Megistos 4-1.

Carlton Sandt made two saves in the first half before Paolo Gomes subbed in for him to start the second half. Connelly said he wanted to give Gomes playing time in the event he would be needed in the tournament later.

"We're playing these matches the way we're going to play in AOCAF or the World Cup," he said. "That's how we've always played this tournament and it will be as long as I have something to say about it."

Well, a bit of luck can't hurt, can it?

Postby Sylestone » Sat Aug 01, 2020 2:55 pm

When Sylestone were drawn against Tequilo in the MSMT first round, they sighed heavily. Despite only playing their U-23 side, they knew they were in for a tough run. However, it was not to be as they just managed to slip past Tequilo on penalties after the Mixer scored Sylestone's only goal in the 90th minute of the match, forcing it into extra time. No more goals were scored after that.
The Tumble Dryer, Mixer, Fridge, Bar Stool and Ironing Board all scored their goals and as Tequilo's fifth player readied their kick, everyone's heart was in their mouth. When the Brick Wall deflected it onto the crossbar, there was pandemonium. They were into the final of the Krytenia section.. against Krytenia themselves. One of the better sides in World Football. Another sigh was emitted.

As the Appliances walked into the game against Krytenia, they had decided to just give it their best shot and not expect anything more. And they did. They kept the game surprisingly even in the first half and at half-time the Toaster, the coach, congratulated them on their brilliant play.
"I've never seen you play anything like that before. Keep it up for as long as possible. If we can do that in the IAC and the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers, then who knows how well we'll do. So get back out there and show them what you're made of again."
The second half was much like the first half. The Sylestonean defence was stronger than ever and Krytenia just couldn't break through. Instead, in the 77th minute, it was Sylestone who did. A complex play including a Bar Stool header, a chip from the Fridge and some awesome dribbling from the Mixer resulted in a corner for the Sylestoneans. The corner was taken by the Stove, who kicked the ball high in the air. The Bar Stool, apparently realising what to do, jumped on top of the Tumble Dryer and headed the ball into the goal. The Sylestonean celebrations ran rampant around the ground. The Krytenian supporters were equally shocked. They weren't expecting this from a side ranked 190th in the world rankings. The Sylestonean defence remained sound until the final whistle was blown and the stadiums erupted with Sylestonean fans urging to congratulate their side. Krytenians were looking like they were in a bad dream and waiting to wake up. They didn't because it was the reality of it.
Sylestone now plays Northwest Kalactin in the semifinal. A victory there will send them to a final against the winner of the Baker Park - Starblaydia contest. They need a big bit of luck as both sides are top-notch teams who qualified for the World Cup. But then again, a bit of luck can't hurt, can it? And remember, who beat Krytenia?

Jhanna City, Starblaydia--After two victories in Delaclava, the National Team representing the FAC in the Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy have arrived in the Starblaydi capital to face off against the home side at the iconic Stadii Di Bradini in the semi-final, with the winner to face either Sylestone or Northwest Kalactin in the final.

The match will mark only the second visit to the nation for the Commonwealth, the other coming during the EqueStar World Cup 80 Finals; Baker Park played their WC debut match against The Holy Empire at the Jhanna City Recreation Ground before moving to Silverlands in Corinth for the remaining group fixtures.

Manager Jennifer Prescott already considers the results so far a success for the hastily assembled squad and expects to get the full attention of the 5 time World Champions, who are fielding their AOCAF-bound team for this event.

"For having only six training sessions ahead of the kickoff against Gothanita, the squad have come together fantastically. We were able to get the entire group playing time in Manchester, which is always one of our goals. I expect that they (Starblaydia) will be looking to get another solid result as they build-up towards heading out (to Equestria). I'm excited to match wits against Ázëwyn Fëanáro, because how often do you get a chance to measure yourself professionally against one of the very best?"

The MSMT has been an opportunity for the FAC's newest Development staff coach to get a chance to show his stuff; former NT captain Matt Villareal completed his Pro License Course (in the same cohort as Cassadaigua's Jessica Curran, who he has replaced in the Development Scheme stable) and is working with Prescott, AM Will Barnard and coach Kristen Sawyer.

Win or lose, there will be one final contest--either a return to Manchester for the Third Place match or a spot in the Final in Nicksia, Sarzonia at the appropriately named Mike Sarzo Stadium.

Sylestone make the final of the Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy!
No way. Who would have thought? Sylestone making the final of the MSMT! Knocking over Tequilo and then somehow, Krytenia. Then they beat Northwest Kalactin to make the final. All three of their opponents are ell higher than them rank-wise and Starblaydia will be the highest. But who knows?
The Appliances went into the game against Northwest Kalactin knowing that they could beat them. And beat them they did. After the Mixer scored an early goal, Northwest Kalactin came back with one just before the half-time break. At 1-1, it looked as though a close game was on the cards as both sides had exactly 50% possession, This was all about to change.
At the start of the second half, Sylestone’s opponents put another goal past the Brick Wall, but that was the last one. Over the next twenty minutes, Sylestone kept possession and the tumble Dryer scored three goals to make the score 4-2 Sylestone’s way at the 80-minute mark. The reality was just starting to sink in: Sylestone was going to make the final. Tern minutes later, there was pandemonium. It was furthest Sylestone had ever gone in a proper tournament with rankings and all, beating the ARWC where they were knocked out in the semifinals by Baggieland after an unbeaten run. But they’re against Starblaydia. They will be the top side they have ever faced in a tournament and will provide a huge series of challenges. But they can do it. They’ve knocked out three very good teams, so why can’t they knock out another? Join us tomorrow for the live coverage of the game.
Prediction: Starblaydia 1-1 Sylestone (1-1 AET) (4-3 pen.)

Prescott satisfied with Sarzo Tourney results

Manchester, Delaclava--The National Team competing in the Mike Sarzo Memorial Trophy competition returned to Manchester mid-day, about 15 hours after pushing Starblaydia to the limit in their semi-final at the Stadii Di Bradini in Jhanna City.
There will be one final encounter here, the Third Place consolation match against Northwest Kalactin, but the overall mood in the squad is positive, and Manager Jen Prescott has been the catalyst for that feeling throughout the 23 day trip.

Prescott spoke about the larger purpose of the tournament outside of the sporting element. "We (FAC) made the decision to participate here because it had a purpose beyond just having teams competing for silverware; the fund-raising aspect struck a chord & we're proud that our supporters took it upon themselves to organize events to raise donations. The senior team squad from the World Cup all pledged donations, as well as the staff back at Birkenfeld at the Training Center. The organization itself matched every dollar pledged with two of their own, so we are thrilled to be able to contribute about CBP$110,000 to the Sarzonian FA."

In recapping the Starblaydi match, Prescott took a optimistic tone. "If you take Roni (midfielder Veronica Navarro) out of the equation, I think they had more experience on the bench than we had in the starting lineup. That's a group they are sending to Equestria (for the AOCAF) and we brought a lot of people we wanted to look at under match conditions, along with a player working her way back into shape (Navarro). We went 120 minutes against them and Ázëwyn (Fëanáro, Starblaydia NT Manager) was very gracious & complimentary in the post-match period--when we shook hands at the final whistle and a bit later when we spoke in the common lounge area open to both official delegations."

When asked about the preparations for upcoming Olympics--the FAC asked the Olympic Committee of the Commonwealth (OCC) to put forward only a female entry--Prescott gave only a brief smile ahead of her answer.
"We have the bulk of the squad figured out...we're having a lot of...constructive discussion--about the coaching staff, the tactics, the overall expectations. I certainly hope that the reporters here who understand how things work at Birkenfeld will understand that 'conflict' doesn't always have negative connotations."

Oh well.

Luck has finally run out. We didn’t really expect to win. Coming second was good enough. Starblaydia were just too good for the runaway Appliance side. They played better and deserved the win. However, the real winner here was cancer research. The true novelty of household appliances playing football generated millions of dollars alone in Krytenia and Sarzonia. We hope that this tournament will greatly effect the finding of some sort of breakthrough for cancer.

Starblaydia are ranked tenth in the world. Today, Sylestone played as though they were their opponents equals. But pure experience just got the better of them. They were 1-0 down at half time after the Dishwasher fouled a Starblaydian striker in the penalty box. The penalty went in. But the Bar Stool equalised after the break with a header from a corner that sailed past the opposition goalkeeper. An upset could have been on the cards. Both sides got perilously close to scoring again but at full time, the score was still locked at 1-1. Deep into the second half of extra time, Starblaydia finally broke through. And I mean finally. A brilliant dribble past the Itining Board led to a near Offside, but the Brick Wall got wrong footed (or wrong bricked) and Sylestone’s opponents went 2-1 up. And that was how it stayed.

Although it was a loss and the Appliances were distraught, making the final was a brilliant achievement. All eyes turn to the IAC now and we all hope that the national Sylestonean side can replicate their heroics they showed in this tournament.

Warm-up brings MSMT trophy to Starblaydia

Starblaydia have a history of success in the Mike Sarzo Memorial Tournamnent and the SFA were delighted to once more confirm their participation in the event, one which has a legacy of international cooperation and partnership for the right reasons.

With some nations sending developmental squads to this friendly tournament, Ázëwyn Fëanáro took the opportunity to keep her AOCAF Cup squad together and get them even more game time. With the almost-there success of the Under-21 side and the Under-18 side struggling to find the kind of cohesion that saw them reach two Finals and lift the trophy once, the view from the top is that the re-cultivation of that 'Starblaydia FC' environment from long ago is the correct path to take to build sustained success.

With four games and four wins, two in extra time, Starblaydia didn't exactly dominate the tournament, but they certainly got the job done and came through against Kolnhead, South Newlandia, Baker Park and Sylestone to lift the trophy for the tournament that's all for a good cause.

"As someone for whom there's a history of it in my family," commented Starblaydi forward Hope Roshanak, 26, "it's been very important for me to be able to play in this tournament and doubly so to be able to lift the trophy at the end. If our participation and wins in both Jhanna and Nicksia are able to raise just that extra bit of money, that extra recognition and exposure to what's going on, then I'll consider that well worth it on every level."

Roshanak scored three goals in four matches, including the Extra Time winner in Nicksia, taking her international tally to 26 in 55 games for her country. She's sure to be leading the line throughout the AOCAF Cup and will doubtless be selected as one of the Over-23 players for Starblaydia's tilt at the women's football Olympic Gold Medal in two years' time.

Final score from Mike Sarzo Stadium, Nicksia:
Starblaydia 2 - 1 Sylestone (AET, FT 1-1)
(Maddison 26 (P), Roshanak 117) - (Bar Stool 52)
