Copa Rushmori 35: Second first step for Mavinet's national team
by Ho Dai Quang, Associate Sports Editor
It's been long enough from Mavinet's first runs in international football tournaments that we can now look back and ask this question: Did Mavinet have a a good introduction to the world's football scene? Each person, depending on their level of expectation, will have their own answer to that. A common ground everyone can accept is Mavinet's national team got a lot out of the experience, playing against some of the best teams in the world while also learning from some of the most notable up-and-coming teams. It's important to remember not just the amazing feeling of watching the young players of the U-18 and U-21 teams pushing further than expectations or the triumphant parade in the center of Dai Hoa after our team won the Baptism of Fire, but also the bitterness of defeats in the Copa Rushmori 34 or the World Cup 85 Qualifiers. If anything, those failures taught the Mavinese players and coaches far more than the sweet victories ever could.
With that in mind, the Mavinese national football team have gathered everything they learned from the first international cylce and ready to head into the second cycle. The curtain raiser for the senior national team's cycle will be the regional Copa Rushmori, this year being its 35th edition. Astograth and Savojarna are co-hosting this year's tournament, marking the fifth time the regional cup happens in more than one nation. The distance between the two hosts are quite a way apart from each other but teams don't have to travel between places in the two countries until the knockout stage, so that takes off a bit of burden from teams who are wary of the long distance travel.
Who will Mavinet face in the upcoming tournament? Coming to Virkaja and Hovikkara with Mavinet will be Oberour Ar Moro, Pridnestrovia, Ancharmunn and defending champions Eura. This will be the second time Mavinet have to face the defending champions of the Copa Rushmori, and many Mavineses will hope the encounter will not be as disastrous as last time's 0-8 humiliation against Pasarga in Eastfield Lodge. The Water Buffaloes will begin their campaign with the match against Pridnestrovia, who enjoy close proximity to Savojarna, and definitely will have an easier time adjusting without the jet lag.
After several weeks of preparation and finalization of the roster, the national team departed Van Xuan International Airport yesterday heading to Valladares for their layover, before landing in Savojarna just one week before the start of the tournament. The team will spend one day recovering from travel fatigue and sightsee the city of Virkaja, known for its beautiful natural environment and the Northern Sumani Dragon Park, where the Sumani Forest Dragons are protected and maintained.
An exciting start to Mavinet's second cycle is coming. The Water Buffaloes will need a strong second first step to keep up the work they have been building so far.
