NEW LLAMA CITY -- With the Super-Llamaland Tigers sitting at 13-8 in what has been an incredibly underwhelming return to the World Baseball Classic, it has been widely rumored that the Llamanean Baseball Association is considering firing manager Sofia Rasmussen if she is unable to defeat Terre Septentrionale in tomorrow's pivotal three-game series at Tyler Rocke. Rasmussen, who had only two years of experience with the New Llama Wizards before being chosen to be Laurent Mårtensson's successor as Tigers manager, was a controversial pick from the outset. And while many of her more controversial selections for the Llamanean roster - including the choices of Tyson Long and Isaac Colón to fill key roles over a plethora of more experienced players - have worked out, Rasmussen has rightfully earned criticism for being too experimental in the group stage, costing the Tigers some crucial wins.
The LBA does have a history of patience in their managers; no Tigers manager has served in their position for less than three Classics. But a failure to make the second round of WBC49, which a loss against an overperforming Terre Septentrionale would surely indicate, would be a catastrophic failure for a team that has missed the second round just twice in the last half century. And with initial confidence in Sofia Rasmussen already low due to her choice of an overly young, overly New Llama City-based roster, the former star catcher is shaping up to be the shortest-lived manager in Tigers history.
If Rasmussen were to be fired, the rumor mill considers bench coach Winston Yi, the only other domestic head coach on Rasmussen's staff, the most likely pick to be interim manager. However, Yi is unlikely to want the role in the long term. Who, then, could be Rasmussen's long-term replacement? At LSN, we believe that there are three options that the LBA will likely be choosing from:
3. Tanya Ericsson (Manager, South Falls Athletic)
Tanya Ericsson was originally believed to be Laurent Mårtensson's successor, and the LBA seriously considered her before eventually settling on Rasmussen. Over eighteen seasons with South Falls Athletic, she has entrenched her status as a team legend, twice leading South Falls to a President's Cup and falling short in the final three more times. Under her tutelage, South Falls have become one of the premier teams in Super-Llamaland at player development, seemingly always able to pull new stars out of nowhere when former stars leave in free agency or are injured. Ericsson could also be a popular choice due to her successful international career and vocal support of Laurent Mårtensson's approach to managing. While she may still hold a grudge over the LBA's choice of Rasmussen, Ericsson would be a stabilizing choice as Tigers manager and hopefully bring the team back to the glory days of WBC40-42.
2. Michael Shelby (Manager, Nikcoro Suns)
When the Nikcoro Suns were formed as an expansion team just five years ago, absolutely nobody had any expectations of them. But just nine months after being formed, the Suns made a Cinderella Run to the semifinals of the President's Cup, and three years later, they had won it all. Much of the credit has been given to Shelby, a former minor league catcher who has earned a reputation as one of the most managers of personalities in the league, as well as a brilliant baseball mind. While it's unknown if Shelby would be willing to leave the project he's been working on for the past five years, he would be a great pick for the current roster. His player development and personality management skills would be great fits for a young, ambitious Tigers roster. Additionally, Shelby is believed to have played a large role in Nikcoro's Expansion Draft efforts, which could translate to being able to unearth hidden gems when choosing his Tigers roster. While Shelby is closer to Rasmussen than Mårtensson in terms of past experience, taking a risk on him could pay massive dividends.
1. Maddie Polanco (Manager, Cassadaigua NT)
Former Llamanean first baseman Polanco has shone over eight WBCs spent managing Cassadaigua's national team. While she hasn't been able to take her team to a fourth WBC championship yet, she has made four semifinals and two finals in her time with Cassadaigua. It's currently unknown while she would be willing to leave Cassadaigua - currently #1 in the WBC rankings - for an underperforming Tigers team, and many believe that she would be unwilling to become Tigers manager until she managed to win Cassadaigua a fourth WBC. Polanco, formerly a bench coach under Laurent Mårtensson at WBC40, is by far the best living Llamanean manager right now, though, and if the Tigers could get her signature, it would be a massive boost to their chances moving forward.
