Road to the World Bowl

The Squidroidian Flyers

Episode 2: Training Camp

Takanori Army Base. Squidroidia's national team didn't know their opponents yet, but if anything they trained as if they were in a group of death. With Colonel Tanyu on the sidelines, he left all his training duties out to his coordinators. On the offense was Colonel Sadow Saikaku, drawing up the quarterback passes and play-options that the team will have to adapt to on their road to Delaclava. As a former Squidroidian gridiron player at the cornerback position, defensive coordinator Colonel Kouumoto Kaii knew that defense played a big part in Squidroidian Bowls. He was there for a couple, but both times he lost in agonizing fashion. He roughens up a defense including DT Sada Tomeo and cornerback Hayashida Yakamochi, the linemen including linebackers like Baba Kageyasu slamming their way pass the offensive line to force risky plays from the quarterback.

And then there's Colonel Miyamoto Saikaku, the special teams coach. He just makes sure Tone Dayu can actually kick a prolate spheroid through a gap in 2 sticks in the air. He doesn't do much, but as he often said during interviews, "It's just honest work."

The training sessions were intense, and that was putting it lightly. These boys were forced to play what was essentially 3 whole football games back to back. Of course these were practice scrimmages, but the intensity Colonel Tanyu and his coordinators put on these boys was at times sickening. Some of the players had to force barfs back to make sure they weren't fired. When talking about this "Practice Hell" by the Squidroidian media, he said that it "Toughened up" the players. He thinks that this method would only make them stronger as the days ticked by. With enough practice the Squidroidians, in his eyes, would look like machines more than humans.

The day before the World Bowl draw, Colonel Tanyu pulled somebody aside after yet another grueling practice session. This somebody was wide receiver Sando Soseki, who acted as Squidroidia's kick and punt returner as well. He was jacked, but not as much as the defense. He could cut through cornerbacks with pace, but struggles with long kick returns. He was good enough to stay on the field, but not good enough to be a star. Everyone knew he could do better. None more so than the head coach.

"Sando, you've been doing wonders on that field for me AND for Squidroidia... But I see more potential in you."

"Yes boss, I know... They've been telling me that ever since I picked up a football."

"Look kid. The World Bowl is coming up. You know this, I know this, everyone knows this. You need to get better in the lead-up to our first game. Mr. Soseki, I want you to stay here for another hour and practice your catching and running. You need this, the World Bowl is more challenging than even the Squidroidian Bowl. Show Squidroidia what you got, and I'll give you a pizza party at the end of our season."

"Sounds like a plan, Colonel. I mean, we'll be kinda late for the World Bowl draw, but I'll do anything for you, anything!"

"That's my boy! Now go run a 40!"

NEWMANISTAN ROCKETS

WORLD BOWL 39 ROSTER

"Proudly underachieving since World Bowl I"

Starters (Offense) (Standard Formation listed, but many formations are used)
QB- #3- Brian Scanlon, 26, Centralia Firebirds
HB- #21- Thomas Browning, 28, Dover City Mountaineers (Averages 65% of carries)
FB- #45- Devlin Grier, 30, Pocono City Capitals
WR- #84- Stephon Sutton, 25, Pocono City Capitals (First Time Starter)
WR- #81- Lucas Jackson, 24, Nashua Broncos (First Time Starter)

LT- #79- Davis Alfonso, 30, Seminole Bay Gators
LG- #65- Byron Vanetti, 26, Centralia Firebirds
C- #69- Kyle Cross, 28, Loudon Leopards
RG- #60- Royce Samuel, 27, Loudon Leopards
RT- #63- Michael Janssen, 33, Southport Tigers (Offensive Team Captain)

About the offense:
Prior to World Bowl 38, there was a lot of changeover with the offensive starters. Therefore, there is not much that is different about this unit for the current World Bowl. Where there is a notable change is with the wideouts, as coach Marvin Dineen is looking towards a couple of younger speedsters to have breakout campaigns. Dineen, himself, always seems to be on the hot seat as the coach, but he is brought back, once again, after seemingly doing the bear minimum to maintain his job. There are many in the Empire that will be quick to criticize him for any mistake or difficulty.

Starters (Defense) (The Rockets Generally Use a 4-3 Base)
DE- #98- Lenny Bailey, 27, Southport Tigers (First Time Starter)
DE- #95- Dontae Riddick, 26, Jessicaville Millionaires

SS- #22- Desmond Jenkins, 26, Olympia Gladiators
CB- #25- Alejandro Booker, 28, Southport Tigers
CB- #23- Corey McManus, 25, Putnam Lake Eagles

About The Defense:
In World Bowl 38, the roster had eight starters on defense that were either making their international debut or starting for the first time. Now, all eight of them return for their second campaign, and they are joined by three new first time players. This unit was a work in progress last time out, and in World Bowl 39, this is phase two of getting the defense back in order.

Note: Most players on this roster have English names because they're some remnants of previous nations I've RPed with and I carried them over with Terre Septentrionale, but most inhabitants in this nation speaks either French or Polish.

NSFB: TJUN-ia Returns To Gridiron In Pot 3?!

Postby TJUN-ia » Sat Jun 27, 2020 12:22 pm

Image

Name: TJUN-ia
Trigram: TJU
Nickname: Jaguars or Jags
Home Colours: Light Blue/Orange/White
Road Colours: Black/Dark Orange

So then, you knew this was coming. As association football nears the completion of it's biggest events, gridiron football returns. GFA-TJUN-ia is back, and they are looking forward to another edition of the World Bowl - with a twist. The last one was in the Free Republics, who managed to win it all on home soil. Now the unranked United Republic of Delaclava is the hosts, but the group stage matches will not be centred over there. Instead, all of the participating teams will host group stage matches before the knockout rounds occur on neutral ground in Delaclava. This means that, for the first time ever, international gridiron football will be played in TJUN-ia. With the Jaguars sneaking into Pot 3 after going 2-3 last time out (with both wins against the top 2 seeds), the expectations are certainly a bit high among fans.

SQUAD
Head Coach: Gus McKerrin (38)
Offensive Coordinator: P.J. Swarts (34)
Defensive Coordinator: Mohammad Al-Khalifa (29)
Special Teams Coach: David Stroman (33)

After doing the "Gaggle of Coaches" method last time out, GFA-TJUN-ia decided to set the coaching staff straight by appointing a head coach and three understudies. The man with the honour of being our first Head Coach is Gus McKerrin of the NAU, who the GFA though showed "excellent decision-making skills both on and off the field. As far as we can tell, he was the leader of the team". The Offensive Coordinator will be P.J. Swarts from JB TJUN-ia, Defense will be lead by Mohammad Al-Khalifa of ArU and Special Teams by David Stroman of CU. These 3 are specialised towards different aspects of play, but can also be used as replacements if the GFA decide that McKerrin is doing enough. Gus knows this, so he must show the governing body that they made the right decision.

STADIUM
Name: Field of Dreams in The Gardens
Location: New Washington, NAU Zone
Capacity: 87,000

Marking the debut of the NAU Zone in international sports, the Field of Dreams at the Gardens was built with chaos in mind. The builders expect that the national team might pull off some upsets and memorable wins here, so most of the seats have direct access to the field in case storming it is required. "The Gardens" is a reference to the bushes that flank either side of the field, just behind the team areas.

A note about past events: This roster essentially retcons the roster changes that occurred between World Bowls XXXVI and XXXVII; the Regulars have only had four (five, if you're generous) proper head coaches: Willy Studdenburger (WB7 & WB8), Stevan Vaalburger (first coach of the Regulars proper)(WB9 - WB11), Ryan Smart (WB12 - WB22), Baeryk Vaalburger (WB23 - WB36), and now Rik Olafsunn (WB37 to present). Additionally, the U-22 team that was rostered at WB37 is retconned; the Allamunnic squads at World Bowls 37 and 38 should be assumed to be similar to this one and the one at WB36.

Overview:

After a 16th-ranked Regulars’ squad under Rik Olafsunn overachieved at World Bowl XXXVIII, the now 8th-ranked team returns to build on their 4th-place finish and hopefully end an 11-year title drought.

The names and faces on the Allamunnic National Gridiron Team change thoroughly, if slowly, but the team are such regulars at the World Bowl that they are essentially an institution all their own. This perception is reinforced by the amazing stability of the team’s philosophy across its thirty-two (thirty-three counting World Bowl XXXIX) outings; the team has always been about winning in the trenches, trusting its offensive and defensive front-sevens to drive them forward on both sides of the ball, while using a large, deep roster, led by a large, professional coaching and training staff, and a mildly unusual (to non-spread teams) no-huddle system to operate at an unforgiving pace to grind down opponents and adjust to whatever gets thrown at them.

Another thing that sets the Regulars apart is their... somewhat contentious relationship with the Allamunnic Gridiron League, the Federation's domestic gridiron league. Due to prioritizing team cohesion and a bid to improve player safety and working conditions, Regulars' squad members are not permitted to sign contracts with domestic league teams; doing so immediately voids their contract with the national team. This leads to a revolving door at some positions (like wide receiver) where players often feel under-utilized, but where exposure on the national team can be a strong professional springboard. Additionally, this means the Regulars practice and train together year-round. The Regulars are as much a family as it is a team, and the comfort and flexibility this gives between teammates is a major asset.

It's an approach that has produced seven berths in the World Bowl Finals, where the Regulars have been reliably successful, netting six championships to go with several other semi-final and third-place finishes. Although the Allamunnic States has never hosted a World Bowl, nor have they ever gone undefeated, their reliability as a contender means they are rarely out of the world gridiron limelight.

Allamunnic Sporting Commissioner: Erik Warnur (Age: 59) - Benjamen Jamesunn retired following World Bowl XXXVIII, confident that the team was in good hands. He was replaced by the Regulars' then-general manager, Erik Warnur. Warnur had helped the team with rebuilding and stabilizing itself after some lean years, but in his new capacity he mostly handles bureaucratic and diplomatic matters with other gridiron federations; his involvement with the team itself is minimal.

General Manager: Anna Torrensunn (Age: 51) - Torrensunn had served as the Regulars' "director of player personnel" for several years prior to her promotion. In reality, it meant that she served as an assistant general manager, helping manage player contracts, commitments, and overseeing recruitment efforts. Torrensunn has turned out to be quite good at luring capable recruits that AGL teams often overlook, to the Regulars' gain.

Head Coach: Rik Olafsunn (Age: 59) - With the “retirement” of Baeryk Vaalburger from the team following the disastrous World Bowl XXXVI outing, Rik Olafsunn was hired promoted to head coach with the ultimatum to get the team back into title contention (at least the quarterfinals) within two or three years. He succeeded at World Bowl XXXVIII in returning the team to the semi-finals, which has bought him additional time. Olafsunn, despite everything, is still a Vaalburger acolyte which means he still focuses on winning at the point of attack on both sides of the ball and emphasizes winning in the trenches.

Offensive Coordinator: Maarkus Daalhulm (Age: 55) - The Regulars’ quarterback-turned-coach is back once again as offensive coordinator, able to take advantage of his intimate familiarity with the Regulars’ system and his own similarity with Regulars’ quarterback Ed Kaarlsunn make him a good fit as a play-caller for the team. Daalhulm’s play-calling, like his own play once upon a time, is opportunistic, unafraid to go away from his bread-and-butter to take what a defense will give.

Defensive Coordinator: Theodur Laansur (Age: 54) - Another long-time Regular, Laansur has shown a surprising amount of flexibility as a defensive coordinator; where many players-turned-coaches always show a strong preference for their former position due to familiarity, Laansur has not shied away from further refining the unorthodox hybrid defense first conceived by his mentor, Ryan Smart (although its outward trappings are more conventional now, Laansur has not shied from its flexibility). Laansur is an aggressive coordinator who should be able to keep opposing offenses on their heels.

Special Teams Coordinator: Phillipa Demirici (Age: 61) - Another long-time Regular, kicker-then-coach Demirici has been instrumental in transforming special teams from a gaping liability to, at minimum, a unit that can do the job asked of it competently. She is fairly conventional in directing the special teams; trick plays are not common for the Regulars' unit, but they follow a conventional gameplan competently under Demirici's direction.

Offensive Coaching Staff:
Quarterbacks Coach: Izaak Kleiner (Age: 47)
Running Backs Coach: Torren Tormundsunn (Age: 35)
Tight Ends Coach: Udun Jaarlsunn (Age: 33)
Receivers Coach: Waldr Hoerst (Age: 35)
Offensive Line Coach: Vaalhulm Rikken (Age: 46)
Offensive Line Assistant Coach: Rikard Kynyk (Age: 36)

Defensive Coaching Staff:
Defensive Line Coach: Archie Wagner (Age: 51)
Defensive Line Assistant Coach: Piotr Farrangur (Age: 37)
Linebackers Coach: Kyl Waalturs (Age: 40)
Linebackers Assistant Coach: Junn Haaldur (Age: 40)
Defensive Backs Coach: Leif Coelmunn (Age: 46)
Defensive Backs Assistant Coach: Rikard Junnsunn (Age: 36)

Special Teams:
Kicking Coach: Wyatt Skode (Age: 44)

OFFENSE

Overview

Philosophy: An uncharitable observer might call the Allamunnic National Gridiron Team’s offensive philosophy stagnant and archaic, with some justification. Despite changing the window-dressing or adding wrinkles on occasion, the foundation of the offense --running between the tackles, bringing overwhelming power to bear at the point of attack-- remains the same as it has been almost uninterrupted for 30+ World Bowls. There are very rarely any huge surprises from the Allamunnic offense.

Just because the Regulars can and will run the ball up the middle until they are stopped does not mean they are a one-trick squad, however. The offense has the aforementioned wrinkles to punish a team that makes the mistake of overloading the box, whether it’s to use outside runs and the option to punish teams that pack the tackle-box, or launching the ball deep to take advantage of a diminished defensive backfield. The Regulars’ strategy essentially is to force an opponent to bring their front seven against the Regulars’ front-seven, confident in the knowledge that the Allamunnic blockers are, pound-for-pound, quite possibly the most reliably effective in the world.

In Practice: On a more nuts-and-bolts level, while the Regulars’ “base” formation is a pistol variant of the I-Formation (the “fullback” lining up on the QB’s left, the “halfback” directly behind, five yards from the line of scrimmage) utilizing a tight-end and two wide receivers (usually referred to as a split-end and a flanker). Although this is the Regulars’ default formation, and the one used to list personnel, it should be noted that opponents may see them use anything from the Wishbone, Flexbone, Flex-Pistol (a pistol variant of the Flexbone), standard I-formation or any of its weak- or strong- offset variants, as well as the Long I (OOC’ly the Maryland I) and the Power I. Teams may even, on rare occasions, see the Regulars line up in Ace or Ace Pistol formations. The only formations opponents are unlikely to ever see are the shotgun and its variants, empty sets, or a formation with more than three wideouts (there will almost always be at least one back and one tight-end on the field). Two-tight-end sets are also fairly frequent; if you're wondering which player is mostly likely to get dropped in favor of an extra back or tight-end, it's usually the flanker (FL).

The Regulars' offense runs through the inside ground game; the closest they will realistically come to abandoning it is if they fall behind by more than 14 points early and are for some reason unable to narrow the gap (and even then, their play-calling may favor the pass more, but the run will not disappear). For a little more structure, assume that, given 60 offensive plays in a game where both teams stay within 10 points of each other, the Regulars will run somewhere between 35 and 45 times, and the quarterback will drop back 15 to 20 times, perhaps scrambling for yardage (positive or negative) on 3-5 of those. In games where the Regulars lead early, expect the load to be more run-heavy, and in games where they fall behind early, expect the ratio of run to pass to approach 1:1.

A note on ball-distribution: there are a lot of mouths to feed in the Regulars' rushing attack. Unless a player is experiencing an unusually hot game, none of the backs are likely to break significantly past 15 carries in a game. Eriksunn & Staalburg will likely lead the pack with between 10 and 15 carries each, with Sfynsunn and Kaarlsunn likely tallying somewhere between 5 and 10 each, and Jaans and Hendriks typically getting 5 or fewer. Castillo is unlikely to get any carries unless injuries force another ball-carrier out of the rotation. Kaarlsunn likely drops back to pass 15 to 20 times per game, although he likely gets 15 or fewer throws off. Kaarlsunn probably has a base completion percentage in the high 50's or low 60's percent, with disproportionate accuracy on deeper shots and disproportionate inaccuracy on shorter throws (fast throws lead to plenty of drops or ricochets), adjust as needed for your defense. Receptions are, in order, most likely to go to tight-ends, split-ends, and flankers at lowest priority.

If you need penalties, the most likely ones are probably illegal downfield blocks, either by receivers or linemen.

The Roster

Quarterback (QB)
#12 - Edwyrd Kaarlsunn - Age: 23; H: 6’2”; W: 238lbs
#14 - Olevyr Ward - Age: 21; H: 6’2”; W: 219lbs
#08 - Rikard Bromm - Age: 19; H: 6’1”; W: 198lbs

Ed Kaarlsunn is a mobile quarterback who runs like a power back when he takes off; his speed is nothing special, but is sufficient to embarrass linebackers and linemen that take the wrong angle, and he’s strong enough to give defensive backs trouble. Combined with a strong arm, Kaarlsunn has ample ability to punish opponents for over-focusing on the Regulars’ power run game. His most notable weakness is that he, like Graagur Wyrth before him, has poor touch on short throws in particular; every throw is a fastball, meaning the quick passes that are many offenses’ bread-and-butter can be something of an adventure. Behind him, Ole Ward is an athletic, strong-armed QB who is still learning the offense and refining his abilities. He’s a bit faster than Kaarlsunn, but not quite as powerful either in legs or arm, but has a quick and crisp release on throws. Bringing up the rear is Rik Bromm, a very raw but quite talented prospect whose skill-set mirrors Ward, but is faster still. He may be formidable once he polishes up his technique.

Halfback (HB)
#22 - Fredrik Eriksunn - Age: 23; H: 5’11”; W: 218lbs
#31 - Piotr Sfynsunn - Age: 21; H: 6’0”; W: 220lbs
#23 - Lucy Jaans - Age: 22; H: 5’9”; W: 162lbs
#29 - Roberto Castillo - Age: 20; H: 5’10”; W: 214lbs

The Regulars’ lead tailback duties have been taken over by Fredrik Eriksunn, a sturdy, hard-running back who can also acquit himself well as a receiver. Fred typically gets somewhere around 15 carries per game. In flex-pistol and wishbone sets, Eriksunn will share the field with Piotr Sfynsunn, another sturdy back in the same mold who also serves as his primary back-up, usually getting 10 or so carries per game. Lucy Jaans is a quicker, shiftier back who is a capable receiver as well as an explosive rusher. She will get heavy looks in wishbone and flexbone-derived sets, often getting paired with flanker Ryanna Mueller as slotbacks, averaging about 5ish carries per game. Finally, Roberto Castillo is a promising, explosive back who still needs to learn how to read his gaps a little better; he’s a competent change-up back, but isn’t quite ready to shoulder the load as a primary rusher, and he'll mostly get spot or deep-reserve duty unless injuries become an issue.

Fullback (FB)
#24 - Derrik Staalburg - Age: 25; H: 6’1”; W: 240lbs
#36 - Bryndyn Hendriks - Age: 23; H: 6’0”; W: 248lbs

The Regulars’ new offensive systems call for different types of fullbacks in different situations. Derrik Staalburg is the more well-rounded back, a capable blocker, downhill rusher, and safety-valve receiver. While he will see most of the snaps (and typically 10-15 carries per game), in situations that call for a more capable blocking specialist Bryndyn Hendriks will likely fill in at the fullback spot. In the Long-I and Power I, both will likely end up on the field.

Tight End (TE)
#38 - Grenn Jordsunn - Age: 28; H: 6’2”; W: 250lbs
#89 - Torren Rikards - Age: 23; H: 6’4”; W: 253lbs
#81 - Theoden Jaans - Age: 24; H: 6’3”; W: 241lbs

Grenn Jordsunn is a converted fullback who will now put his blocking and catching skills to use as an in-line receiver and blocking. Jordsunn is a better blocker than receiver, but he can do both adequately. Torren Rikards has a more balanced skill-set, equal-parts receiver and blocker; he is a better receiver than Jordsunn, but not as capable of a blocker. Rikards rotates heavily with Jordsunn under normal circumstances. Finally, Theoden Jaans rounds out the tight-ends as a receiving-oriented player. Jaans is the best receiver of the bunch, and in situations where the team needs to air it out he will get the majority of snaps.

Split End (SE)
#83 - Harlyn Wyrnur - Age: 30; H: 6’2”; W: 220lbs
#82 - Piotr Shraedur - Age: 23; H: 6’2”; W: 216lbs
#84 - Riley Barron - Age: 21; H: 6’1”; W: 215lbs

Harlyn Wyrnur is a big-bodied, sure-handed wideout with enough burst to threaten opponents deep if coverage is too soft, and with a knack for running crisp routes. Piotr Shraedur is similar in skill-set and talent to Wyrnur, but has a little more youthful speed, which is offset by being raw in his technique and route-running which place him as a well-used second-fiddle to Wyrnur. Riley Barron is arguably the most-talented wideout on the roster, deceptively fast and sure-handed. However, Barron is also much more raw than the other players, and while he may well become the team's premier wideout in time, he is currently a bit of a project.

Flanker (FL)
#80 - Ole Haensley - Age: 33; H: 6'2"; W: 206lbs
#87 - Ryanna Mueller - Age: 25; H: 5’10”; W: 172lbs
#86 - Izaak Kroemwyl - Age: 22; H: 5’11”; W: 204lbs

Ole Haensley is an old-hand Regular, a shifty, sure-handed wideout that helps make Kaarlsunn right. While his speed has dropped off a little bit over the years, Ole is still fast enough to do unpleasant things to defenders that don't cover him tightly enough. Ryanna Mueller is a shifty, fast receiver who is dangerous in space with the ball in her hands. She is frequently used on sweeps or screens. Izaak Kroemwyl is in a similar mold to Mueller, but a little bigger and a little stronger, and a little more raw; his route-running in particular is a bit sloppy.

Left Tackle (LT)
#50 - Baeryk Astyr - Age: 32; H: 6'4"; W: 317lbs
#78 - Rikard Waalburg - Age: 28; H: 6'6"; W: 327lbs
#64 - Henrik Skarrsunn - Age: 23; H: 6’3”; W: 314lbs

Baeryk Astyr is a mauler on the left side of the line, skilled in both run- and pass-blocking. Rikard Waalburg, by contrast, is a more capable pass-protector. Henrik Skarrsunn is capable in both, but is better as a run-blocker. All three can jump between duties well enough that the left tackle position is one that rotates fairly freely.

Left Guard (LG)
#52 - Erik Tyrrsunn - Age: 24; H: 6’2”; W: 310lbs
#60 - Bryndyn Ulfsunn - Age: 30; H: 6’3”; W: 313lbs
#73 - Graegyr Warden - Age: 23; H: 6’2”; W: 308lbs

Erik Tyrrsunn continues the grand Allamunnic tradition of relying on its guards to power the offense as lead-blockers. He's a savage, mauling run-blocker and a steady hand in pass protection. Bryndyn Ulfsunn is similarly balanced but lacks Tyrrsunn's flair for mauling hapless defenders. Graegyr Warden has all of Tyrrsunn's enthusiasm but lacks the speed of the other two, making him less versatile. Tyrrsunn takes the majority of snaps, with Ulfsunn as an active rotator and Warden mostly seeing late duty in blowouts or as a spot replacement.

Center (CG)
#70 - Jormund Haagtynd - Age: 28; H: 6'4"; W: 312lbs
#61 - Ole Faalkenhorst - Age: 24; H: 6’1”; W: 308lbs
#67 - Margus Brynnur - Age: 29; H: 6’3”; W: 310lbs

Jormund Haagtynd is another long-time Regular who anchors an offensive line that has seen some shuffling along its starting line-up. Ole Faalkenhorst is not as canny and experienced as Haagtynd, but makes a capable replacement in a pinch, and can even rotate fairly freely without much drop-off. Margus Brynnur has a similar situation, and his placement on the depth chart below Faalkenhorst is mostly cosmetic; he will see similar amounts of playing time.

Right Guard (RG)
#65 - Snaari Knutsunn - Age: 35; H: 6'3"; W: 315lbs
#61 - Daanyl Fearro - Age: 22; H: 6’1”; W: 308lbs
#63 - Jord Eller- Age: 21; H: 6’2”; W: 305lbs

Snaari Knutsunn, long the engine of the Regulars' brutal rushing attack, is starting to get a little long in the tooth, but with the rotating help of capable youngsters Daanyl Fearro and Jord Eller, he's able to stay fresh enough to have a heavy impact on the game. And Fearro and Eller are no slouches themselves; if they lack the veteran canniness and technical skill of Knutsunn, both make up for it with enthusiasm and the raw physical talent that is boosted by their youth.

Right Tackle (RT)
#68 - Jorvik Staaghyrt - Age: 33; H: 6'3"; W: 318lbs
#56 - Aldryk Mjorr - Age: 24; H: 6’4”; W: 316lbs
#72 - Donal Andrsunn - Age: 21; H: 6’4”; W: 312lbs

While Jorvik Staaghyrt, capable long-time starter that he is, still sees a lot of playing time, he has seen a significant amount of his playing time eaten up by the young, brash road-grader Aldryk Mjorr. Donal Andrsunn is a raw young player who will likely only see spot duty, but is a good sign for things to come.

DEFENSE

Defense:

Philosophy: Seeking to capitalize on a deep and talented defensive line, defensive coordinator Theo Laansur has swapped the Regulars back to a 4-3 base front, with elements of the “Tampa-2” style coverage shell. The front enables the aggressive, active defense that Allamunnic defensive coordinators, Laansur included, have long-favored, generating consistent pressure and hemming in rushers.

Much like the offense, heavy rotating systems are used to ensure players stay relatively fresh the entire game, although particularly talented starters will still get the lions’ share of snaps. While the aggressive and deep defense means the Regulars have a knack for generating big plays on defense, it can also occasionally lead to over-pursuing, players being caught out of position, or a lack of over-top coverage that can lead to surrendering big plays. As a general rule, opponents might find it easier to score one or two big plays on the Regulars than reliably driving the ball down the field.

In Practice: The Allamunnic defense mostly lines up in the 4-3 or de facto 4-4 or 4-2-5 with the same personnel, with nickel and dime packages being trotted out under obvious passing situations and occasionally a jumbo package being used against obvious running situations. The Regulars’ defense is aggressive, sometimes to a fault, meaning they’re likely to cause their share of big plays and are hard to move against, but occasionally commit mistakes that result in giving up big plays; success against the Allamunnic defense will tend to come in chunks rather than methodically.

Theo Laansur likes to dial up blitzes quite frequently. Out of the base package, he can use any of the three linebackers or the strong safety, who frequently creeps up and acts as a de facto fourth linebacker. Stunts where the strong safety plays up in the box and the MIKE linebacker drops into coverage are pretty common fare, and though the SAM linebacker gets used as a blitzer fairly frequently, Laansur usually favors bringing the WILL linebacker as the fifth rusher.

Even in the base package, the MIKE will frequently get dropped back as a de facto second strong safety in likely passing situations. Assume the defense can handle the pass and run about equally; teams will be best served by better execution of their game plan, exploiting individual mismatches in man-coverage, or taking advantage of gaps or overpursuit that occur as a result of their aggressive playstyle.

Notes on production: U'Daanyl is probably going to be the team's tackle leader in a typical game, followed by Vogyl or Lukas. Waalturs is typically the team's sack leader, although any of the starting front-eight may well come into contact with the QB or be playing behind the line. Any of the DBs or U'Daanyl are likely to snag an interception, but Baenty is the team's resident ball-hawk so she probably has the best chance of being in the right place to do so. The Regulars hit pretty hard, so if you need a penalty, unnecessary roughness is a fairly likely one, and Vogyl, Lukas, Roenyr, or Pelayes are the most likely culprits.

The Roster

Left Defensive End (LDE)
#98 - Corryk Roenyr - Age: 25; H: 6’5”; W: 289lbs
#91 - Jordyn Haensley - Age: 23; H: 6’2”; W: 294lbs
#79 - Wyllem Kristiansunn - Age: 28; H: 6’1”; W: 292lbs

Corryk Roenyr has a balanced skill-set and is a hard hitter, serving as an enforcer on the (usually) strong side against rushers and passers alike. Behind him, Jordyn Haensley is a uniquely disruptive defensive end, arguably the future of the left end position on the Regulars, but he is still a little raw, refining his technique and cleaning up mental mistakes. He and Roenyr will rotate heavily. Wyllem Kristiansunn is a more veteran player who is a little on the lighter side; while able to acquit himself well enough against the run, Kristiansunn’s strength lays in rushing the passer, and he will see most of his work on third downs.

Left Defensive Tackle (LDT)
#99 - Baeryk Moergyn - Age: 25; H: 6’4”; W: 320lbs
#74 - Joran Haargrave - Age: 29; H: 6'3"; W: 314lbs
#92 - Bryndyn Aldsunn - Age: 20; H: 6’3”; W: 310lbs

Baeryk Moergyn has filled out nicely as a nose guard over the last few years, able to command the necessary double-teams and contain the run, while having the necessary explosiveness to be an asset against the pass. Joran Haargrave has a similarly-balanced skill-set, if not Moergyn’s exceptional talent, and will see a lot of rotating reps at both Left and Right Defensive Tackle spots. Bryndyn Aldsunn is a capable young tackle who is more well-rounded but is still young and is learning his reads.

Right Defensive Tackle (RDT)
#66 - Odyn Grahulm - Age: 29; H: 6'4"; W: 308lbs
#94 - Izaak Vikkurs - Age: 27; H: 6’1”; W: 317lbs
#77 - Aldryk Harren - Age: 25; H: 6’2”; W: 314lbs

Odyn Grahulm is a veteran Regular and one of the centerpieces of the defense. The disruptive defensive lineman is strong and sturdy enough to play as a tackle on the inside while possessing the quickness to play as a run-stuffing end, contributing to the pass rush. Grahulm rarely comes off the field, but in the event that he needs a break, he is backed up by capable veterans Izaak Vikkurs and Aldryk Harren, both of whom are of the run-stuffing persuasion; neither will be a liability in the pass-rush, but is clearly not their area of strength. If Grahulm has to miss any significant time, Vikkurs and Harren would rotate pretty freely.

Right Defensive End (RDE)
#59 - Theodur Waalturs - Age: 21; H: 6'3"; W: 286lbs
#62 - Ryan Merrik - Age: 23; H: 6’2”; W: 295lbs
#57 - Faeryk Joergsunn - Age: 28; H: 6’4”; W: 285lbs

The son of legendary Regular Honorius Waalturs, Theodur Waalturs has returned to the Regulars to man his father's old spot as a pass-rushing defensive end. Although Waalturs is a capable run defender, it is in the pass rush where he most shows his father's flair. In more obvious running situations, Ryan Merrik has a solid chance of coming in to spell Waalturs, as Merrik, while young, shows a natural aptitude for crashing running lanes and squeezing down left tackles to bottle up weak-side runs. Faeryk Joergsunn is a well-rounded defender who acts mostly as a reserve for Waalturs and Merrik; he can fill in in a pinch wherever, but he's not quite up to the explosive talent as the two younger defenders ahead of him on the depth chart.

Strong-Side Linebacker (SLB)
#44 - Kaarl Vogyl - Age: 29; H: 6'4"; W: 254lbs
#51 - Erik Olsunn - Age: 23; H: 6’2”; W: 250lbs
#55 - Bryndyn Moergyn - Age: 21; H: 6’1”; W: 250lbs

It is worth note that the SAM linebacker position is frequently an important one for the Regulars, and many of their defensive leaders have played the position. Adding to that legacy is Kaarl Vogyl, who is the defensive signal-caller. Vogyl is an athletic, do-it-all linebacker, capable in coverage against even more athletic tight ends and backs, while having the speed and slipperiness to penetrate the line against the run or pass, and most importantly, the tackling chops and raw power to flatten rushers on the edge or to the inside. Behind him are a pair of youngsters. Erik Olsunn is considered by many to be the future of the SAM linebacker position for the Regulars; fast, versatile, and aggressive, Olsunn has already started pushing Vogyl for reps, even if he is still solidly slotted in as a back-up. Capable, if less-spectacularly-talented, is Bryndyn Moergyn, who will get similar amounts of playing time. Moergyn is more run-stuffer and coverage man, less pass-rusher, whereas Faalyn is a little weaker in coverage but makes up for it when running at the quarterback.

Middle Linebacker (MLB)
#23 - Claetus U'Daanyl - Age: 30; H: 6'1"; W: 232lbs
#39 - Rikard Helig - Age: 23; H: 6’1”; W: 230lbs
#25 - Wyllum Ulryk - Age: 23; H: 5’11”; W: 228lbs

Claetus U'Daanyl is a bonafide star for the Regulars; his physical talent was such that the defense was essentially re-calibrated to emphasize his talents, first as a hybrid linebacker-safety, then, as he bulked up a smidge, as the prototypical ranging MIKE linebacker. The Regulars' system asks U'Daanyl to do it all, and way more often than not, he delivers with gusto, whether that's spying a dual-threat QB, crashing on a runner, blitzing a passer, or following a slot receiver in coverage. Behind him is young Rikard Helig. Helig is not the physical freak that U'Daanyl is, but he has the boundless energy and spryness of even greater youth behind him, and his skill set is similar enough that he can fill in for Claetus without a significant drop-off. Wyllem Ulryk is a converted running back. He's not as merciless of a tackler as U'Daanyl or Helig, but he makes up for it by superb skills in coverage; he often gets used as a de facto safety or nickel linebacker. Ulryk also gets plenty of special teams reps.

Weak-Side Linebacker (WLB)
#54 - Graegyr Lukas - Age: 25; H: 6’3”; W: 252lbs
#47 - Margus Corwynn - Age: 29; H: 6'3"; W: 247lbs
#95 - Erik Faalyn - Age: 20; H: 6’2”; W: 248lbs

The aggressive WILL linebacker spot is manned by now-veteran Regular Graegyr Lukas, who has spent the last several years partnered with Vogyl as the team's primary enforcers against the run. The WILL linebacker is asked to do a lot of pursuit, either against strong-side runs or as a situational pass-rusher. He's asked less often to go into coverage than Vogyl or U'Daanyl, but Lukas is certainly no liability there against fullbacks or tight-ends, but his main strength is as an enforcer. Getting brought on the blitz frequently, ball-carriers tend to learn to fear Lukas. Margus Corwynn follows the mold of many Regulars' back-ups, a little older, with a similar skill-set to the starter, able to fill in or rotate without causing a drop-off in play, and is a reliable special teams hand. Erik Faalyn is considered by some to be the future of the position for the Regulars; though Lukas has no plans of going anywhere soon, Faalyn's aggressive, fast play may have him pushing Corwynn for the number two spot, and Lukas for reps, sooner than either is comfortable with.

Left Cornerback (LCB)
#07 - Bryndyn Witt - Age: 30; H: 6'1"; W: 209lbs
#26 - Fredrik Junnsunn - Age: 25; H: 6’1”; W: 210lbs
#16 - Waldr Denysunn - Age: 20; H: 6’0”; W: 197lbs

The left cornerback is called on to act in run-support as well as frequently getting matched up against athletic wideouts, requiring a big-framed, fast, and hard-hitting player at the position. The Regulars are fortunate to have two such corners on the left, who rotate freely, in veterans Bryndyn Witt and Frederik Junnsunn. Witt is the nominal starter due to experience and more refined technique, but in practice the two will play about the same amount, with perhaps a slight favoring to Witt. Both are large-framed, unafraid of contact, and fast enough to keep up with the vast majority of the wideouts they're likely to line-up against, and solid tacklers to boot. It is worth note that Junnsunn is usually the team's extra defensive back in nickel packages. Waldr Denysunn is built in a similar mold, but he's younger and a lot less experienced and as a result is less likely to see heavy duty unless injuries become an issue.

Strong Safety (SS)
#34 - Fausteno Pelayes - Age: 21; H: 6’0; W: 220lbs
#32 - Junn Wyllur - Age: 25; H: 6’0”; W: 217lbs
#37 - Derrik Alder - Age: 23; H: 5’11”; W: 212lbs

Young Fausteno Pelayes has been a revelation at strong-safety, a hard-hitting, versatile defender in the mold of Claetus U'Daanyl who held the position before converting to linebacker. Pelayes can handle most larger wideouts, tight ends, and backs in coverage, although he may have issues with the fastest, shiftiest of receivers. What he lacks in raw speed, however, he makes up as a back-field enforcer; Pelayes is a strong enough tackler and hard enough hitter to rattle anyone on the receiving end, and he is frequently brought up into the tackle box in obvious running situations to serve as a de facto fourth linebacker. Junn Wyllur was the previous starter, displaced by a talented youngster, but more than capable of pushing for playing time. If he lacks Pelayes' instinctive playmaking, it is still rare for one to find fault with Wyllur's play. Derrik Alder is a younger safety who mostly gets his action on special teams, though if Wyllur is pushed into starting duty by injuries, coaches will have no reservations about playing the capable young man.

Free Safety (FS)
#05 - Anke Baenty - Age: 30; H: 5'10"; W: 167lbs
#10 - Rona Therrian - Age: 23; H: 5’9”; W: 163lbs
#21 - Anessa Robyrts - Age: 22; H: 5’10”; W: 165lbs

Anke Baenty continues the tradition of Belle Margussunn by serving as the Regulars ball-hawking free safety over the top of the defense. Baenty is a deceptively capable open-field tackler despite her size, but her real danger lies in her ability to read quarterbacks' eyes and get in the way of passes. Rona Therrian and Anessa Robyrts are both learning from Baenty and challenging one another for playing time and the right to eventually succeed the veteran Regular, but right now it's pretty much deadlocked; either one or both of them might be used to spell Baenty or see late action in blowouts. Both will see plenty of special teams duty, though.

Right Cornerback (RCB)
#19 - Piotr Skellig - Age: 25; H: 5’11”; W: 196lbs
#18 - Shonn Viktur - Age: 26; H: 6’1”; W: 204lbs
#40 - Lugus Sylfa - Age: 20; H: 5’10”; W: 193lbs

Piotr Skellig and Shonn Viktur, much like Witt & Junnsunn on the left side, are a pair of reasonably experienced, talented Allamunnic corners who rotate pretty freely at the cornerback spot. Skellig is, relative to some of his colleagues, just slightly undersized, but he makes up for it with a natural playmaking ability that's almost impossible to teach. Lugus Sylfa is a talented, if undersized young defensive back who is perhaps more naturally a safety but has the best chance for reps at corner currently. He's not likely to get loads of playing time right now outside special teams, but he's one to watch for the future.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Kicker:
#15 - Sofya Torrus - Age: 22; H: 5'8"; W: 170 lbs

With Kaarl Hunt bouncing to the domestic league in the hopes of one last payday, young leg Sofya Torrus takes over the heavily-used kicker position for the Regulars. Torrus doesn't quite have Hunt's leg strength (kicks outside of 50 yards are unlikely to be successful), she actually has better and more consistent ball-placement: inside of 45 yards, misses are very rare.

Punter:
#40 - Harald Flack - Age: 24; H: 6’1”; W: 232lbs

Alas, long-time punter Wyatt Skode finally felt the need to hang up his cleats. Into that void steps converted linebacker and Recreational- and Developmental-league punter Harald Flack. While Flack does not have Skode's experience and absurd ball-placement skills, he has enough of a leg to serve as a passable imitation for the time being. The Regulars use their punter heavily to win the field-position battle, and thus far Flack has not generated any significant complaints, even if he still has a lot to polish and learn.

Long-Snapper:
#76 - Olesunn Kriegur - Age: 26; H: 6’3”; W: 285lbs

After a few years learning from long-time Allamunnic longsnapper Vaargus Kynt, Ole Kriegur has taken over full-time as the Regulars' long-snapper. The converted defensive tackle has managed to replicate a similar level of reliability to his predecessor and really, that's all you can ask for from a long-snapper.

Return Specialist:
#28 - Elisa Junnsunn - Age: 23; H: 5’9”; W: 164lbs

Deep reserve running back Elisa Junnsunn takes advantage of her considerable speed and slipperiness to fill the Regulars needs at return specialist. On kickoffs where two returners might be useful, she is usually joined by fellow tailback Lucy Jaans, and, consequently, may also get looks at slotback in the flex-pistol or flexbone formations.

The first question Sarzonian national gridball coach Tim Gates had nothing to do with his choice to go with a run-heavy offence instead of his usual West Coast offence. It had nothing to do with previously seldom-used backup quarterback Joe Locklear becoming the starter with longtime starter Gavin Davis as a quarterbacks coach.

Without a beat to examine the other teams on Sarzonia's World Bowl XXXIX schedule, including their opener away to Torisakia, the question directly addressed the elephant in the room.

"Coach, with Free Republics scheduled to play in Woodstock on Matchday Two, how are you going to approach the political tensions between them and Sarzonia?"

Gates closed his eyes for a brief moment in order to keep himself from rolling them. He knew the questions about Sarzonia going on a war footing against Free Republics after the provocation by Senator Samuel Izmailov and the threat of invasion would be coming.

"I'm focused on the gridball task ahead of us," Gates said after an extra pause to collect his thoughts. "We have an opening match against Torisakia and they're too strong for us to overlook them because we're facing Free Republics and neither country particularly likes the other right now."

Gates grimaced when the next question was focused on whether Free Republics gridball players, coaching staff and other team personnel would even be allowed in Joe Gibbs Stadium.

"We've been in contact with External Affairs way too fucking much for a fucking gridball match," Gates said. "The decision about whether they're allowed in the stadium is way out of my pay grade." The Incorporated Gridball Federation sent word through their sports information office that Free Republics players, coaches, and team personnel would be allowed, but their fans would not.

A spokeswoman for Woodstock Mayor Claudia Alta said the city did not have the authority to lift restrictions on Free Republics citizens visiting Sarzonia and would not for a gridball match.

"That's a decision that involves national security protocols and we aren't part of that discussion," the spokeswoman wrote via email. "Mayor Alta has stated that she would comply with reasonable directives from External Affairs, but she hasn't received any guidance from Senior Vice President Conway."

A spokesman for Conway said that the Free Republics team personnel were specifically granted an exception to be allowed in Sarzonia as Free Republics citizens are still not permitted to travel to Sarzonia except for urgent needs.

Senior Vice President for Defence John Newman said that security near the stadium would be "heightened," but also denied that the stadium would be surrounded by armed Naval Infantry as early reports suggested.

"We have a battalion ready to act at a moment's notice, but [Dave Wilson Athletic] Complex officials rejected a request from Vice President for Naval Operations Katherine Bunhall to allow armed Naval Infantry forces into the stadium," said Defence Department spokesman Robert Johnson. "The Complex prohibits firearms and only an act of Parliament or the President can override that."

President Grant Haffner said he would not attend the match between Sarzonia and Free Republics, and also added that he would not sign an executive order mandating an armed force within the stadium.

"We need to dial the tension back," he said of the tensions between the two countries that nearly culminated in a war. Unconfirmed reports suggest that a nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine was on the verge of opening fire, but the crew on board refused to.

Haffner wouldn't comment on the report, saying that discussion was better served at another time. Meanwhile, Alta said she wouldn't attend the match, but her husband Lyndon would.

"He's a huge gridball fan," Claudia Alta said. "He's champing at the bit to watch the top ranked team play the Stars."

The Karditan Ironworkers

The Ironworkers have returned from their oh-so-long hiatus--thirteen world bowls and nearly three decades--to grace the halls of international gridiron once more. Even through the Dark Times football remained a fact of life in inland Karditan, getting progressively more and more violent as society collapsed. It's been pulled back from the brink since the reinstitution of the government, but the echoes of that violence still rings in how players are trained to this day. They'll be managed by Grey Skies, a fifty-nine year old pegasus who is the sole remaining survivor of the last Ironworkers team.

They carry on the stylistic drive of the original Ironworkers team, which is to say completely aimless offensive playcalling, heavy reliance on defensive conversions, and Jeremiah Bull's iron boot working overtime. This clusterfuck somehow led to us accidentally helping eliminate defending champions Ko-oren in the group stage of World Bowl XXXVIII, though we'd end up falling short ourselves. And we didn't even take the Golden Bowl despite it floating around the group. Bah.

Home Stadium: Redzzon Coliseum, Indianeighpolis; Cap. 120 000. They sure do love their football in Indianeighpolis. Football football football. Not baseball, no, and not just because their team is consistently terrible. Football. And if you do anything to insult their football, well, they've got pretty good hospitals. The denizens (70% pony) are the loudest, most obnoxious fans Karditan has to offer, which is partially why they have this giant stadium to root in. That and Redzzon Oil is based in Indianeighpolis and has a ludicrous amount of profits to throw around. They've also got a big-screen scoreboard the size of a house hanging above the western stands.

Player Spotlight: Kevin Alés
by Ken Clayton

With the beginning of World Bowl 39 - the first international competition in return for the reformed Delaclav gridiron team - and given that gridiron in Delaclava is only now beginning to resurge in popularity, it's fitting to introduce some of the Delaclav game's biggest stars to a wider audience. For this piece, we're taking a look at wide receiver Kevin Alés, who comes from Velodri University and is now one of the finest players on the Quinniville Aces. We sat down with him after a practice to get some insights on and off the field, as well as some thoughts on the national team and the tournament:

Background

I'm one of the few guys on the team not from the mainland. Born and raised in Verceola - Denali, to be exact. It was a pretty strict upbringing from my parents, the overall culture, and my schooling, which I think was really beneficial. It's made me focused and disciplined, which is a huge asset when having all these opportunities, but experiencing so many new places and not wanting to get distracted. I pretty much instantly gravitated to gridiron. Sports were mandatory at my school, and a lot of the other guys wanted to do gridiron too, so it was really competitive. I've always had that leg up - I've never been afraid of a challenge.

College career and entering the NGL

I played four years at Velodri University, and we had some great runs. We won the Verceolan collegiate championship in my sophomore and senior years. It was a big satisfaction to go out on top, and not wonder what could have been, especially with having a lot of success and wanting more and more. But I thought that was going to be it. I was finishing up my political science degree, I even had a job lined up at Denali City Hall. I figured at most, I'd be playing some semipro ball. But then the NGL came calling and the Quinniville Aces snatched me up in the draft.

Verceola was starting to come under Delaclav jurisdiction a few years prior, so all these opportunities were opening up for Verceolan citizens, who were now also Delaclav citizens. I'd traveled to the mainland a few times for trips with friends, even a bit for research, and I know teams were coming to Verceolan games to scout. I'd loved everything I'd seen of Delaclava, and so the opportunity was too good to pass up. There's a finite window where you can be at the top of your sport - you can't miss your chance when you have it.

Where he's at in his career

I just wrapped up my sixth pro season, all with the Aces. I've been named to the All-Star Game the past two years and I really think I keep getting better and better. It was an adjustment to the speed of the game at first, the deeper talent pool. I did not have a good rookie season on the stat sheet, but the Aces take care of their own, and I felt the ability to improve. I really thought I could play at a high level and got hungry to make it happen.

It's been good to step into a leadership role the past few years. It's starting to feel more familiar now. I've always been used to being a leader, one of the best players on the team. I really needed those few seasons where I wasn't the top cheese, to remind me that's an earned privilege, and to give me something to work for. But I'm really comfortable being in the driver's seat and putting us in a position to win games.

How he gets ready for games

The Aces don't go very hard on Saturday, mainly just walkthroughs. Then I'm doing everything I can to get stretched out and limber for the next day. I'll get a massage, nap, cook for my girlfriend. My mindset is, get as relaxed as possible on Saturday and Sunday. Any sort of aggression or fire needs to wait until just before the game. Then game time comes, and I'm ready to go. I can push for the full sixty minutes. It's a system that's taken me a while to get down, but my cardio and endurance is better than ever. No one outruns me in the fourth quarter.

How he spends his free time/offseason

I'm always trying to stay involved in the community, so during the season, when I have free time, I'm contributing in the little ways I can - campaigning door-to-door, helping with public events and recreation programs. It's cool being a sort of celebrity around here, and I think I should use that to be accessible and useful. By myself, I'll play tennis, read, watch other sports. Not really gridiron so much. I try to separate that out from my life off the field. The World Cup campaign has been something to watch. Frustrating at times, but they're going through the same thing - it's their first time back, they're trying to adjust to the level of competition.

I do like to go back to Verceola for the winter - not just because it's home for me, but there's plenty to do there and it's a nice change from the season, where all the travel stays on the mainland. It's warmer in Verceola so Aces teammates will come and visit pretty often. Then when we get back to spring and summer, we'll head back to Quinniville, get used to being back there and get prepared for the season.

On the new national team (and being selected for it)

We kind of saw this coming at some point. Like before we started allowing Delaclavs to travel abroad, we were getting information and news, we knew that the competition existed, so once the funding was there for a national team, it was going to happen. Especially with our history from decades ago in the tournament. And it was something I really wanted when it was announced. I've been one of the best receivers in the league the past few years, so I had my suspicions that it would come for me, but I was so relieved anyway when I got the call.

On the team dynamic thus far, and rivals becoming teammates

It's working out really well so far. There aren't egos, everyone's working well together. Coach Bielsa's put together a great squad and a great coaching staff, he has a vision for how we're going to succeed in this tournament and going forward. We're not sure what we're getting ourselves into, but we're hopeful that we have what it takes to make a good impression.

There isn't any animosity to work through. That's just not the way the league works, or really the overall Delaclav athletic mindset. You play hard, you do everything you can to win, but be respectful and clean, accept the result at the end of the game and shake hands. There's definitely some gentle ribbing about different results that have happened, but it's a sign that everyone is competitive and wants to get better. At the end of the day, we're not going to turn that on each other - we're going to turn that out onto the other national teams.

His role on the team

We're undersized for this tournament, we know that. I'm 6 foot 2 myself, the shortest wideout on the team. But I'm fast, change direction quickly, and my strength is reading and adapting routes. Gridiron is a game of power for most other teams. We're going to win with a little bit of finesse.

Expectations for World Bowl 39

We don't have the home pressure of being the hosts necessarily, since the group stage games are home and away. But at some point, the knockout round is heading here, and we really want to be there and have a full home crowd. We're kicking off against Quebec in Quinniville, which will be like a home game for me, I'll have friends and family watching. Yeah, making it to the final 16 is an obvious goal to shoot for and we think it's within reach. From there? It's tournament time. Anything could happen.

On the team's legacy

It really wasn't something we fully understood at first. We weren't alive when the Phoenixes won World Bowls 13 and 15. Many of our parents weren't even alive yet, or just born. Factually, we knew that we come from a very strong program, but it really didn't click for a lot of us at first. The gridiron league isn't really that popular in Delaclava and the international success was six decades ago. How could we consider ourselves one and the same team who did that?

But as we've been practicing, leading up to these games, we'll run into people who were children and teens then. Now they're in their 60's, 70's, and 80's. They're thrilled, and even a bit emotional that we're having this opportunity again. They remember the joy the Phoenixes brought them back in the day, and they longed to see it again, not knowing if they ever would. Even if we haven't seen the whole history of this team unfold, these people have. It's been really humbling to become aware of that, and learn to respect that.

Remarkably, a few guys from that team are actually alive and we've gotten to meet them - Harrison Green, Rod Millard, Jim Kemerer. And the big one for me was Tanner Hauser. The other receivers and I have really admired him and Andy Swarzreng, looked to them for inspiration. Those guys really wanted to make sure they passed the torch to us, trusted that we were going to get the job done, whether it was this tournament, or the next, or ten or twenty years from now. I hope we can show them a title while we've still got them. But at least knowing that we're giving it our best shot again, it's the best we can do to continue what the legends have accomplished.

More Funding, More Talent for Ranorian National Team

With greater viewership last season, the Ranorian National Team was able to bring in some major talent, including guys who have yet to even play in their first RFL season such as Vice Jackson III. While the defense lost some key talents, including pass rusher Justin Kearse, they finally acquired a true star quarterback for this football team in Derek McNair.

With McNair at the help rather than aging veteran Terry Grayson, this team should improve across the board. McNair has a better arm than Grayson had even in his prime, is more athletic than many receivers, and has the awareness to make the right decisions consistently. McNair has played in seven professional seasons to this point, and has racked up three seasons of over nine hundred rushing yards and two more of over four thousand passing yards. With three all pros and a pair of MVP awards under his belt, he is arguably the best quarterback in the league, and at the worst a top three field general. Grayson, comparatively, is no slouch, but he has never had that sort of statistical success.

Grayson is a top ten passer in RFL history, both in terms of touchdowns and yardage, but he has yet to post a four thousand yard season, or to clear thirty passing touchdowns, both of which McNair has achieved. And that isn't to knock on Grayson. He began his playing days at the end of the smashmouth era, where he wasn't asked to carry the load. He has been impressively able to adapt, with just under 11,000 yards and 75 touchdowns against 49 touchdowns in the last three years, after he was traded by the Pittsburgh Ironmen as they attempted to snatch up pass rushers. But he will never be the face of a generation of talent, nor able to provide the spark in a football team that McNair will.

Meanwhile, Vice Jackson III, Richardson's star running back last season, will be playing this season as well, meaning he will essentially play a full year of football between the domestic college year, NSCF, World Bowl, and then the RFL. It will be interesting to see how his body holds up under such continuous strain. He has been, reportedly, offered an eight million dollar, one year deal though, more than he will make in his first two years combined in the RFL. It isn't unlikely that that's hard to turn down for a 21 year old man...one whom likely believes himself to be nearly invincible.

Regardless, with Johnny Farmer also returning, this offense should hum along very nicely for the Ranorian team.

After failing to get into the tournament last season, the squad will be looking for a bounceback. Otherwise, the nation may see a fall in viewership, and the resulting talent drain could kill the momentum that this team has built these last few years, setting Ranorian progress on the international playing field back by years.

Kohnhead get drawn into the "Group of Death"

Image

The group draw for The World Bowl is over, and Kohnhead has been drawn into Group G which is already being called the Group of Death by many.

Free Republics Rank: 1
It wouldn't be the Group of Death if it didn't have the best Gridiron team in the World right now. Of course our first game in the World Bowl we will host Free Republics in what will surely be a test of if we are willing to endure the pain of a 40 something point loss. Their offense involves heavily on running the football with an athletic quarterback and running back which will be a test for our linebacker core. The problem is, because they are such a good team Dania Sandberg the quarterback can easily destroy our suspect corners with her arm as well.

Continuing with their theme of speed, the defense highly relies on it which may neutralize our deep threat in Bradson. Watford will probably under heavy pressure the entire game, and will need to make sure to call out if blitzes are coming. An extra blocker on almost all plays might be necessary. Watford's turnover tendencies might cost us big time in our first game.

The Greater Nordics Rank: 18
Technically this is the best draw based on rank in the pot. The Greater Nordics are very close to the bottom of group 2 yet they will still be massive favorites against us. The Greater Nordics will try to run the ball early and often based on their coaching staff and personnel. Despite this they will still be a pass heavy team suggesting they have not run the ball well and a lot in the past, and hope to even the pass, run split. These first two games will be difficult for us of course taking on the top two teams in the group. Defensively we will have to stop Herman Lang who is contemplating retirement.

Torisakia Rank: 23
If you don't see the trend here, are you okay? The schedule for us is our games start off against the best teams, before progressively getting easier. Our probable 0-2 start will lead to Torisakia at home. Our football team knows the Ice Birds well from World Cup qualifying where they unspectacular lost to them twice. Their two losses to Torisakia were one of the main reasons they came up just short in qualifying.

Our defense will need to stoop Aaron Spady and the West Coast offence that they run extremely effectively. Defensively they operate with a slot corner, three linebackers, and three d-lineman, a scheme which most Kohnheadians are unfamiliar with. Torisakia are the third best team in pot 3 so another very difficult draw.

Northwest Kalactin Rank: 55
This is the best draw our group got is Northwest Kalactin. Just like us they are an offensive minded team who really likes to throw the ball. Expect this to be a crazy high scoring game where defenses are forgotten about. Our defense will have to try and stop the strong arm of Jack Nelson who doesn't normally make mistakes. Our top two corners are both lackluster so he may have a field day, 500 yard game against us. Our speed/lack there of in the secondary will lead to many problems as almost all of the wide outs can burn us deep.

Our questionable interior will have to try to hold off Blake Lucas which may be problematic and our coordinator is probably losing sleep over the prospect of facing him.

Sarzonia Rank: UR
Here is the matchup we will be looking forward to. Sarzonia will travel to Chicken King Stadium to take on us in what will probably be a battle for last. Given that they are unranked like us, I don't know what to expect from this game. It could be a one-sided affair, or it could be a close game between equal opponents. Another run oriented team will be another good test to see if our defense is up to it. It will be The Stars versus The Brains in this one.

After each of these games are done, we play the same teams in the same order just the opposite team hosts for a grand total of 10 matches of which we are expected to win 1-2 of. It could be a long World Bowl but not all first tournament teams are as successful as our football team was. Good luck to all of our competitors although we will probably need it more.

Robby Mills, Blake Lucas, TJ Taylor and Travis Reynolds, the starting defensive line for the Kalactanian team, has a very special relationship. They are known to train together 6 months a year, and before World Bowls, they sometimes live in a house for up to a month before. This year was no different, that night they where in the house, and they would have a practice tomorrow. The next day, of course, they could see that Blake was naturally overpowering everyone else at the practice through his strength. Robby had much more trouble however, he was the weakest starter on the D-line, and he was having trouble about the 1-1 match with Steve Johnson. Johnson was easily holding him off and Mills was not happy about it. He slammed his helmet on the ground after losing another 1-1 with Johnson. The coaches pulled him off the field and talked to him with Mills yelling at them back. The coaches tried to calm him down, but it was no use, Mills kept yelling back at them, and soon it would take a much worse turn. Mills sat down on the bench trying to cool down, he tried to keep his anger to himself. 3 minutes later he came back onto the field, and had another 1-1 with Johnson.

This time, Mills wasn’t looking to beat Johnson, he was looking to beat him up. Off of the whistle Mills got a run up, he then brought his arm back, and took a swing at Johnson. Blake sprinted over as soon as he saw it happen, he tried to run in between them, but he was too late. Mills punch hit Johnson right in the neck, and Johnson fell back as the punch happened. Blake jumped in between them and so did many other players. Robby had 5 guys on him, and others where trying to help Johnson up. Blake and TJ knocked Rob over to the ground where he couldn’t do anymore damage. Roy Grey, the defensive coordinator helped Steve walk off the field injured with minor cardiac arrest from the hit. 4 guys held Rob down and walked him of the field, he wouldn’t be coming back to that practice. Practice stopped immediately, and the coaches announced that the practice would not resume for the rest of the day as they would be holding an emergency meeting to decide what to do. 6 hours later a press conference was held for the coaches, as they had decided what to do.

Reporter: Will Robby Mills be returning got the rest of the World Bowl?

Coach: Robby will not be playing for the National Team during this World Bowl.

Reporter: Does Steve have any major injuries?

Coach: Steve has a very minor concussion, but he will be back in time for the start of the World Bowl.

Reporter: Has a decision been made on wether Rob will be able to play in the NKGFL this year?

Coach: We will leave that up to the commissioner of the league to decide if he will play this year. It is not our responsibility to make that decision.

Reporter: Who do you guys plan to start in the place of Robby during the World Bowl?

Coach: We have not made that decision yet, but Peter Angeh is a front runner for the position.

Reporter: Alright, we will leave it up too the NKGFL to decide what to do tonight.

NKGFL Meeting
The commissioner, and multiple other NKGFL officials are meeting, deciding what will happen to Robby Mills, for the rest of the season.

Commissioner: Alright, let’s review the circumstances. Robby Mills got mad after being blocked by the offensive guard, Steve Johnson multiple times. He proceeded to punch Johnson in the throat, which gave Johnson a minor concussion.

Head of the disciplinary committee: I think we should at least do a 4-game suspension. I wouldn’t go as far as we regularly would due to it not taking place at a NKGFL event and it not taking place during a game.

Commissioner: I agree completely, what do you think we should look at in terms of fines?

Head of disciplinary committee: We’ll I think a $15,000 fine would be sufficient for what he did. Along with a 4-8 game suspension, that should work.

Commissioner: Alright, so I believe a good option would be a 6 game suspension and a 15,000 Kalactanian Dollar fine, does that sound good to y’all.

Head of Disciplinary Committee: Yup that sounds all good to me.

Commissioner: Alright let’s go and announce this to the press.

Press Meeting
Commissioner: Alright, so the punishment that we agreed on for Robby Mills is a 6 game suspension and a $15,000 fine. Robby must serve his punishment during the first 6 games of the season.

Reporter: Why only 6 games?

Commissioner: We didn’t go as far as we regularly would due to it not taking place at a NKGFL event and it not taking place during a game.

Reporter: Will Steve Johnson receive anything.

Commissioner: Steve plays in the Pridnestrovian National League, so we don’t have jurisdiction over what happens to him.

Reporter: Will he receive limited compensation because of him only playing 8 games during the regular season this year?

Commissioner: Again, we don’t choose that. The Brenleigh Gridiron team gets to chose weather or not he will receive his entire contract.

Reporter: Alright, thank you all for you’re time.

World Bowl preview: Vangaziland again

Baie-Sainte-Catherine, Charlevoix - You probably all threw up when you realised Terre Septentrionale is once again in the same group with Vangaziland. They are the team who caused us to lose our last 3 games in World Bowl 38 in Free Republics after winning our first two games. Let's summarize that World Bowl. Terre Septentrionale started off on the right foot with a decisive victory of 47-6 against Champagne Socialist Sharifistan, the weakest team in the group, followed by a 17-6 win against Jaspec. The Nordiques was 2-0, then the problems started. We played against Vangaziland and we lost 26-17. They were the best team on the field and even if we fought hard, we couldn't beat them. Then, without looking at their permissions included with their roster, my colleague Logan McPhee, who lost his job following last year's World Bowl, reevealed their scorers in his article and, of course, Vangaziland complained about it. On matchday 4, Terre Septentrionale lost 27-21 in overtime against Christos. Yes, Christos, an unranked team. And then we lost 47-6 against Drawkland. While we expected to lose against them anyway, we would have preferred to lose 30-20. And the loss against Christos on matchday 4 is unacceptable. Following that World Bowl, my colleague Logan McPhee, 20 years of career in journalism, was fired. Terre Septentrionale's head coach Jim Bob Patricia was fired. Special teams coach Pepe Pépin was fired. And this left a very bad taste in our mouth. Following that World Bowl, we, sports reporters, weren't in the mood to write any articles. We just started recently to enjoy our job, then bang! We're in Vangaziland's group again. Now I know that I'm not allowed to reveal their scorers. And I would like to warn every other nations in our group: Banija, HUElavia, Alba and Cymru and Western Fardelshufflestein. Do not reveal Vangaziland's scorers in your article if you write it first. Sorry for this rant, this incident was forgotten in Terre Septentrionale until we realise we're in the same group again.

So, we have a World Bowl to play in. Terre Septentrionale will start it at home at le Parc des soldats, home of les Ours de Charlevoix (Charlevoix Bears) against Western Fardelshufflestein. Western Fardelshufflestein, or should I call them Western Fluffy, is an intriguing team that looks balanced between offense and defense. Offensively they're led by their quarterback Matthew Olbrich. Their middle linebacker is Billiam Drakespeare, a guy that will be in Montavious McBryde's face all the time. The cool thing about them is that they have a marching band.

On the following week, we travel to HUElavia, an interesting nation that will hope to increase their rank. They're also pretty much balanced between offense and defense with a sightly better offense. They're led offensively by quarterback Rodrigo Gomez and defensively, their #52 Raheem Roux is a player to watch. The cool thing about them is that they have a touchdown song.

On matchday 3, we receive our main rivals Banija at le Stade du Flambeau in Baie-Verte. The Baie-Verte Packers is the team in the smallest market but it's one of the most popular team in Terre Septentrionale. Banija is ranked 19 and we're ranked 21, it's useless to say that they're the team we have to beat and we're the team they have to beat. It will be our 3rd meeting. In the World Bowl 37 hosted by Banija themselves, and held in two phases, we won our group in the 1st phase as an unranked team and we were in the same group as them in the 2nd phase. They were ranked 14th. We lost our first meeting 20-3 and the second meating 30-3. Actually two of our three losses in that World Bowl were against the Serpent Eagles. Banija is a highly offensive team led by their quarterback Isaka Jawara and their three starting receivers: Tijan Kujabi, Jalang Dibba and Hatabu Jagne. The cool thing about them is that they could be hosting the olympics in a couple of months and gridiron is a demonstration sport.

Then we recieve Alba and Cymru who will also be in our group for the World Cup qualifications (OOC: in Terre Septentrionale timeline, the World Cup qualif starts slightly after the World Bowl). The game will be held in Rzodkiewnica at the Stadion Teletron. They still haven't published their roster, so we have no information about them. The cool thing is that we will play against them in the World Cup qualifications.

On matchday 5, we travel to Vangaziland, the team everyone hates here in Terre Septentrionale. There's no cool thing about them.

Then it's the reverse order. On matchday 7 we receive HUElavia at Stadion Vjekoslav Špoljarić in Kukljica and the home game against the infamous Vangaziland will be played on matchday 10 at le Stade du PÉPS in the capital city of Ville Jacques-Cartier.

What to expect from Terre Septentrionale's gridiron team?

Haylie Woo is back again at quarterback and she'll continue her good work. But the Nordiques offense is led by the running game and both Montavious McBryde and Keyonte Roberts-Whitaker will see the ball often. One of coach Patricia's favorite play was a screen pass to the running backs and it's believed the new coach, Ginette Champoux, will continue that way. Jennifer Killebrew is the top wide reciever but Sheldrick Ferguson-McCloud and Kentre'vious McCullum will recieve some balls too from Haylie Woo. Tigh end Stanislaw Krzyzanowski as well.

The strenght of the team is the defense, you can expect the Reprezentacja Nordycki to allow less than 10 points against HUElavia, Alba and Cymru and Western Fluffy. Our defense is led by our quatuor of libebackers: Jaxton McFolley on the strong side, Colton Novak-Reigelsperger and Stanislaw Strzelczyk in the inside and Nehemiah Charles on the weak side. Our defensive line is probably one of the strongest in the World Bowl and defensive ends Eldrick McLeod and Keyshawn Woodcock-Hunter and nose tackle Nick Wrzuszczak will put a lot of pressure on the opposite quarterback. Our defensive backs are DeShawn Lewis-Harris, Roderick McShepard, Kevin McGinnis and Kareem Johnson. You can expect a lot of interceptions and batted down passes from them.

We have the team to finish 2nd in our group and qualify but unfortunately Banija is in our way and they look better than us on paper.

The More Things Change...
you know the drill

By Jonathan Umadden

Our second World Bowl back and we're already in this situation again. I just went ahead and put together a chart to explain:

Image

The important context here is the WB17 was Karditan's first appearance. For their first four tournaments the Ironworkers were drawn together with the then (and, eventually, now) juggernaut of the Allamunnic States. And then they only had a one-cycle break before they managed to stumble into the Regulars once more in that one Casaran round. A friendly rivalry was struck up, with the 'friendly' part necessary because they kicked our ass nearly every time. One win in nine games total; and that one win comes with an odd transmogrifying asterisk by it (don't ask). Odds aren't looking great for the matchup this time 'round, as the Regulars have made themselves a regular at the top of multiversal football once more. But hey, rekindling an old rivalry is as good a reason as any to kick back and watch the fireworks. Even if it's from a generation ago.

Now, let's just go ahead and take a look at the rest of this group--
Group H
Allamunnic States (8)
Mathuvan Union (UR)
South Covello (44)
Karditan (33)
Abanhfleft (17)
United Civil Republic (UR)

Abanhfleft is a name that'll be vaguely familiar to our readers, though doubtless none of them have ever spelled it correctly. Else these nations are largely unknown to us--wait, isn't South Covello...?

Image

Fuckin' hell, right, that's the reincarnation of Gregoryisgodistan. Those messed up guys that called themselves the "Enemy Crushers" and, notably, eliminated the Ironworkers in their last two tournaments--World Bowls 24 and 25. Not that we can hold the current administration at fault for the sins of those they overthrew--I think. I'm not really up to date on Esportivan geopolitics. Either way, they're not the powerhouses GGS were back then, just like we aren't. It's a bunch of washed-up has-beens flailing around on the field. Quality gridiron.

OOC: Yes I used a picture of Jerry Trainor for the logo. He's the first person that came to my mind when I thought of the name "Bort" (aside from that one Sesame Street thing).

And welcome to yet another edition of the Sports With Bort blog. As always, I'm your humble host Bortmorvious Dionosticles Stevens. Time for another special edition of the blog! It's World Bowl 39 time, and that means we get to see Torisakia light up the scoreboard once again. The Ice Birds missed World Bowl 38 due to a few financial issues and instead of risking going into the red, the TGFA decided to just not send the team. But the financial issues have been fixed and we're on our way to the gridiron! It seems like it's been a while since we've seen any football even though the Hyperbowl was only a couple of months ago. Might be everything that I've had going on recently, you know with Kiragate, Chuggles destroying my house, CassidyBot, all that stuff. But thankfully my plate is clean for the next couple of months so I can fully focus on the blog. Me and my webmaster worked over the past week to redo the site's design, hoping to make it more organized and user-friendly. We now have a search feature, so you can find all your favorite posts by me! I also organized all my posts by competition, word count, and coherency. Hopefully this will make the site more engaging for some of you and won't bother those that die inside when a site changes its layout. I still have nightmares from when YouTube changed their channel layout years ago.

Torisakia's national team roster remains mostly the same as it did from World Bowl 37. Aaron Spady is still our starting QB and our receiving core is still mostly in-tact. One new addition is wide receiver Theo Shepherd, replacing Dominic Alserda who retired last year. Shepherd just finished his second year in the TFL with Douglas-La Pryor and was a second team All-Pro. He had pretty good numbers too, especially in Douglas-La Pryor's quarterfinal game against Tokai United. We replace a few guys on the offensive line too, namely Will Mathghamhain and Mark Pender, the two outside tackles. Mathghamhain is replaced by Antonio Koul, who was the backup left tackle in World Bowl 37 and is currently with Willis. Pender is replaced by Terrance Jacklinson, a second year right tackle from Hyperbowl champions Tokai. Hopefully they'll be able to protect Spady and he doesn't have to run around for his life as he had to do often a few years ago. Defensively, we retain a lot of starters. Bailey McNeil, Kyeon Wilkerson, Darrell Hyden, Asim Hawkins, and Rodney McFarlane are the biggest names returning. Cyrus Beckitt is the only "new" starter, and I use that word sparingly because he was on the team in World Bowl 37 but was the backup right end. He's replacing Joachim Shearer who retired last year as well. Special teams also remains the same with Matthew DeBerry as kicker and kickoff specialist and Joseph Walck as the punter. Overall we have a decent roster that I have no doubt could get us deep in the playoffs. Anything short of the semifinals should be considered a failure.

The Ice Birds were drawn into Group G with Northwest Kalactin, Kohnhead, Free Republics, The Greater Nordics, and Sarzonia. Many of you will recognize a lot of these teams, but maybe not for football. Torisakia and Northwest Kalactin were in the same group for Phase 2 of World Bowl 37, with Torisakia winning both meetings. Kohnhead is a team that Torisakia just can't seem to escape in the sports world. They played them at the Volleyball World Expo, they played them twice in the World Cup, and now we're playing them again in the World Bowl. Which means another round of "Kohnhead? More like CONEhead haha #owned" tweets from Doug McDowell. Not looking forward to it. Free Republics is a team that is as tough as they come: they're the defending World Bowl champions. I'm not saying that it's going to happen, but if Torisakia beats them then technically the Championship Belt goes to Torisakia and Torisakia is then defending World Bowl champions. They're printing "National Champs" shirts as we speak. The Greater Nordics is a team I have no clue about. But they're ranked 18th overall so they can't be that bad. Sarzonia is an old boy in the sports world and I believe Torisakia has played them before, except that was in AOCAF 59. Group G isn't a terrible group at all and I'd say it's probably the strongest out of them all. The top two teams from each group move onto the Round of 16 where the group winners played the group runners-up, and from there the winners of those games go onto the quarterfinals. With a group like ours, it will be interesting to see who makes it out alive.

World Bowl 39 will use a double round-robin format, meaning that each team plays each other twice. Torisakia's first game is against Sarzonia, who is currently unranked in the official World Bowl Rankings. The game will be played at Tokai Memorial, and the team will be rotating home venues as they did in World Bowl 37, although this time they'll be playing a game at the newly reconstructed Estadio Nacional de González Isla. It's been a while since Torisakia has played a national game, so we can only hope they don't stumble out of the gate. I also hope that we don't have as many letdown games as we did in World Bowl 37. I would like to see a bit more consistency this time around. Coach Greg Debay needs to constantly keep a fire lit under the players, and minimize distractions. Since the Kiragate investigation is winding down we won't really have to worry about that waning on the minds of the players. I'll try to stay out of trouble during the course of the competition so I don't become a distraction. We need all of our guys focused. It's championship or bust (or at least semifinals). A losers' bracket is being used for the playoffs this time so we have a more of a chance than ever to make it further than we did in World Bowl 37, which was a 31-24 loss in the Quarterfinals to Pridnestrovia, then defending World Bowl champions.

Well that's all I have for today! I'll be back later this week with a full report from the Torisakia-Sarzonia match, including a scoring summary, stats, and whatever else I want to throw in there. As long as the game is entertaining, I can find stuff to talk about. If it's another boring 13-12 game then I'll just type a few sentences and log off for the evening. It just depends on how the national team wants to treat me.

JECKISH GRIDIRON IN CRISIS ON EVE OF WORLD BOWL

Jeckland go into this World Bowl in a state of uncertainty, with the future of gridiron in the country looking bleak in the midst of a funding crisis for the Jeckish Gridiron Council, the country's governing body for the sport.

Sources within the council are worried about the effect other international tournaments will have on Jeckish interests in this tournament, with a number of issues presented by the other tournaments occurring leading to an already lower than desired level of excitement amongst the general public being hampered further.

Despite competing in World Bowls in the past, Jeckland does not have a strong or proud history in gridiron football. Despite four previous entries to the tournament, Jeckland only managed to reach the knockout phase once before being eliminated in the round of 16. A lack of success means that casual following of the sport in the country remains low, with a small diehard following not enough to bring in the funds seen for more popular sports in the country.

The timing of the tournament will be detrimental to viewing figures. Jeckland are already making their return to baseball in the International Baseball Slam, with the opening game of the World Bowl clashing with a game against Super-Llamaland in that competition. In addition, the World Lacrosse Championships in Jeckland are set to begin soon, with excitement building as the nation hosts its first tournament in years. Baseball and lacrosse are both sports with a greater following than gridiron, meaning a ratings war will not end well for the Council.

The World Lacrosse Championships hosting has also posed a logistical issue, with Jecken Stadium as well as a host of other possible venues rendered unavailable due to their usage in the tournament. With none of the domestic gridiron venues big enough, games will be held at football ground The Junction in Kyslo, whose capacity is less than 60% of the usual stadium. Whilst this could be seen as a detriment for ticket sales, it may be a blessing in disguise, as the JGC have struggled to sell out the lower capacity in any case. They have resorted to offering fans with tickets to one of the two opening games half off tickets to the other to ensure a full stadium is getting behind the Spuds.

Jeckland face an uphill battle to progress further than the group stage, with only 12 nations making the knockout rounds. Two from Group B's six teams will go through, with the fixture list handing the Spuds two home games to begin with. Saint Kanye are first up, with the Surge eliminated at the first group stage last time, before second seeds Xanneria head to Kyslo having narrowly missed out on reaching the final four in the last tournament. They defeated top seeds Taeshan who came bottom in that secondary group stage. Jeckland will travel to the Fitin' Falcons to round off the first half, following an away game at Silver Beach, the only other side not to compete last time around, and a home game against Lisander, who were another casualty in the same group in the first stage as Saint Kanye.

Continued

A year ago, the Free Republics had defeated Drawkland's Grid Crops 65-39 in the highest scoring World Bowl championship game in history. The dominant performance by Dania Sandberg followed a World Bowl where the Republican offense had disappeared for games at a time. The Free Republics had relied on big plays by their defense and questionable calls by officials to overcome Sandberg's inconsistency at QB and get to the championship game.

Yet their championship on home soil had not been the biggest story coming out of Gem of the Oceans Stadium that day. Even bigger was the shooting of Abelino Greece, former president of Falatulu, runner-up in the consul election 8 years ago and the "establishment" front-runner for this year's election. He was shot while sharing a luxury box with Scarlett Nicholls and Robert Nicholls, the former a current consul and the latter a former consul and now a Senator Emeritus (Senator due to having been a former consul). After being shot, Greece chose to drop out of the race to focus on his health, paving the way for Samuel Izmailov and Nova Hellstrom-Hancock to reach the final round.

It was now time for another World Bowl to start. The Republican media did not see any of their opponents in the group stage as much of a threat to beat their national team in their own sport (OOC: The Free Republics claims to have invented this sport, which they call "football". The accuracy of this claim is disputed.) and this confidence that the group stage was irrelevant meant they weren't that bothered about covering the World Bowl until the knockout rounds. However, the media would still cover the 2 Sarzonia games heavily given Sarzonia's recent threats towards the FFR.

It had all started when the Sarzonian government confused Samuel Izmailov with a leader of the Free Republics and decided to cancel diplomatic visits. It escalated as Izmailov used the Sarzonian government's disdain for him to increase his poll numbers by focusing his threats on Sarzonia. The escalation continued as Sarzonia decided to move some of its military forces close to Republican territory in what seemed like an attempt to intimidate the Republicans. The 2 nations had clashed at the World Cup which ended in a 4 goals to 1 victory for the Republican soccer team which had close connections to both remaining consul candidates. Before that happened though, both nations found out that they would be meeting twice at the World Bowl. Katakin Maier's Nicholls Enterprises team would have to play in Sarzonia where all other Republicans would be banned from entering the country due to Sarzonia's over-reaction to a consul candidate whose success was fueled by their own extreme actions. With that set to happen in the second game of the World Bowl following a game against a newcomer from a nation called Kohnhead, the Nicholls family was concerned for the safety of their football team.

The announcement of the stadium assignments for Republican home games was delayed due to discussions with the government about security for the Sarzonia game. After a consultation, they agreed with the government to hold the game in Republica where extra security personnel could be easily assigned to the game to protect against any illegal actions by Sarzonians. However, many could not be blamed for protesting that the real danger involved Republican citizens assassinating people at that stadium given that 2 of the 3 World Bowl finals hosted there had now been marred by an assassination or assassination attempt. Even after the attempt on the life of Abelino Greece, Republican stadiums continued to stand by the constitutional right to carry firearms and the laws against so-called "Gun-Free Zones" that were passed several years prior after several school shootings occurred at "gun-free" schools. Following the complete flop that was Mark Gloomberg's candidacy for consul, there was now no significant political leader in the Free Republics who favored any restrictions on guns whatsoever and the only debate was on the wisdom of an individual mandate to own a firearm as proposed by Sebastian Trudeau of the Trudeau Firearms Company when he ran unsuccessfully for consul 4 years prior. The widespread carrying of firearms in the FFR was cited as a major reason why allowing Sarzonian nationals into the country was not considered a significant safety risk at this time...

Allamunnika Daily
Sports - World Bowl XXXIX Coverage

Regulars drawn into Group H, favored to advance
Competition highlighted by fixtures against #17 Abahnfleft and old rivals #33 Karditan
by Aldyn Wyrnur

With the Regulars suiting up for their thirty-third World Bowl, many Allamunnic gridiron fans are excited for the continued resurgence of old international gridiron powerhouses in Cassadaigua, Delaclava, Sarzonia, and Newmanistan, as well as the return of a Federal squad that overachieved their #16 ranking last time out with a semi-finals finish, now ranked in the top ten and in striking distance of ending a decade-long title drought.

Being favored to win their group outright is hardly unfamiliar territory for the Regulars, even if the team's acclaim has slipped somewhat in recent years, and some pundits might even say the Regulars have been given a soft draw in this competition. However, it is this writer's opinion that this does a disservice to the pedigree and quality of the opponents the Regulars will face in Group H competition. To elaborate, let's take a look at the team's schedule.

Matchdays 1 & 6 - MD1 @ Torsfeld Municipal Stadium, Torrsfeld, vs. United Civil Republic (NR); MD6 @ United Civil Republic (NR)
This one can probably be penciled in as a win. While the Regulars are more than likely going to be able to handle their opponents, it is worth note that it is hardly unusual for unranked opponents to come in and shock more established competition, especially during opening matches where overconfident, highly-ranked teams are still cleaning off the rust of the off-season. At present, no roster has been published for the UCR national team, so it is hard to speak with any confidence as to what their strengths and weaknesses are, but should the Regulars run their normal game plan efficiently, a win should not be too difficult to come by in front of fans in industrial Torsfeld.

On the road rematch, the UCR might put up a bit more of a fight, but we have no real reason to doubt the Regulars' chances of victory there, either.

Predicted Scores:
MD1: Allamunnic States 26 - 10 United Civil Republic
MD6: United Civil Republic 14 - 30 Allamunnic States

Matchdays 2 & 7 - MD2 @ Skarrsboro Memorial Arena, Skarrsboro, vs. Mathuvan Union (NR); MD7 @ Mathuvan Union (NR)
The second part of the Regulars' opening softball homestand comes against newcomers Mathuvan Union. The Mathuvans, not unlike the Regulars, skew towards the run (although apparently not quite as much) and their offense seems to run through dual-threat quarterback Cam Newstone, and the presence of only tailback-style runners in Christian McMast and Jonathan Stewart suggests that this is fundamentally a spread-option based offense. They also seem to make use of a 4-3 defensive front, although in both offensive and defensive cases it is somewhat unclear; the Mathuvans seem to have formulated their roster according to their own gridiron code that uses 12 players per side.

Regardless of which players wind up as the odd men out on each side of the ball, the Regulars have to like their chances; offensively, there should be plenty of opportunities for the front-seven to hammer run after run against the defense and pick up methodical chunks of yards. Defensively, the athleticism of Claetus U'Daanyl should enable Theo Laansur's unit to keep a lid on Newstone's dangerous arm and legs. We can go ahead and predict a win here, although, as with everything in the World Bowl, especially against unknown opponents, nothing is guaranteed.

Predicted Scores:
MD2: Allamunnic States 31 - 14 Mathuvan Union
MD7: Mathuvan Union 24 - 38 Allamunnic States

Matchdays 3 & 8 - MD3 @ South Covello (#44); MD8 @ Aldhuld Municipal Coliseum, Aldhuld vs. South Covello (#44)
The Regulars' first rubber match will be at 44th-ranked South Covello. This nation is perhaps best-remembered as the former Gregoryisgodistan, although the tenor of the team seems to have, ah, shifted since the fall of the despotic theocratic regime. Although we do not have a current roster to work from, based on the nation's most-recently-issued roster there are many silly names to be found, along with a fairly conventional-looking offense (a pro-style offense, near as this writer can tell) and a 4-3 defense.

South Covello is a somewhat goofy team bursting at the brim with creativity, which can make them dangerous. On paper, the Regulars do match up fairly well against them; gone are the Enemy Crushers and the generally-imposing Gregoryisgodistani team. There's plenty of reason to think the Allamunnic offense should be able to drive its way forward and the defense should be able to disrupt the Covelloan offense, but it will be important for the Regulars to not look past them, especially on the road. The dry air of Aldhuld might make for a few more fireworks on the home rematch on Matchday 8. These matchups look winnable, but both should definitely be worth tuning in for.

Predicted Scores:
MD3: South Covello 17 - 24 Allamunnic States
MD8: Allamunnic States 30 - 21 South Covello

Matchdays 4 & 9 - MD4 @ Hendrsunn Memorial Stadium, Innsboro, vs. Karditan (#33); MD9 @ Indianeighpolis, Karditan
A beloved, familiar face returns and shares a group with the Regulars. In years past, when both teams were routinely title contenders, Karditan and the Allamunnic States seemed destined to forge one of the sports' next great rivalries. But over the years, the rivalry dried out a bit. Both teams had trouble replicating their successes over time, and they stopped meeting in World Bowl competition as Karditan experienced internal issues that prevented participation in World Bowl play. The teams last met, for the ninth time, at World Bowl XXII, when the Regulars scored a 26-0 win on the road. In fact, over the team's last five games, the Regulars have not allowed a point to be scored by the Ironworkers.

But now the Ironworkers will visit the Regulars once again, and the two teams, a generation later, will rekindle their rivalry. Karditan successfully knocked off World Bowl XXXVII champions Ko-oren at World Bowl XXXVIII, and will be looking to pull off a similar feat to the Regulars. The Regulars should be able to see off the hard-charging Ironworkers at the national capital in Innsboro, but we're less sure about the road rematch under the bright lights of Indianeighpolis. Defending their home turf, the Karditan Ironworkers may well be able to pull out a close one and add a little more parity to this new chapter in the teams' rivalry.

Predicted Scores:
MD4: Allamunnic States 17 - 9 Karditan
MD9: Karditan 18 - 17 Allamunnic States

Matchdays 5 & 10 - MD5 @ Abahnfleft (#17); MD10 @ Dunnmaar Union Stadium, Dunnmaar, vs. Abahnfleft (#17)
The Regulars' toughest game of the qualifying round will likely come at the end of the first half of qualifiers, as they go on the road to face the Fleftic team. The hostile environment against their toughest-rated competition in Group H will likely be a tall order for the Regulars; while defeat is far from certain (most betting lines currently favor the Regulars, for instance), victory is far from guaranteed, either. Given that the Regulars seem to have trouble stringing together undefeated qualifying campaigns, we're going to go ahead and pencil this one in as the Regulars' annual token loss in qualifiers.

The rematch, at the biggest venue the Regulars will play at home for in Dunnmaar, should go the other way; expect the Fleftic team to find themselves uncomfortable in the likely windy and rainy conditions of the Jormundsea and for the Regulars ground-and-pound system to show its strength in the inclement conditions.

Predicted Scores:
MD5: Abahnfleft 17 - 14 Allamunnic States
MD10: Allamunnic States 20 - 17 Abahnfleft

In Conclusion:

As you can see here, we expect the Regulars to finish qualifiers with a clinched group and an 8-2 record, allowing for them to go 5-0 at hom and 3-2 on the road, with dropped games to rivals Karditan and top competition Abahnfleft. We could imagine the Regulars managing to sweep every series and go 10-0, or to finish as poorly as 7-3, with an additional dropped game (perhaps one at home to its chief competitors? an unexpected road dud to a newcomer?) allowed for, but this writer would honestly be surprised by a finish worse than 8-2.

Buckle in, ladies and gentlemen, it's time for another exciting Regulars campaign!

THE ROCKET REPORT

HOPING FOR A POSITIVE STEP

By Brianne Henry,

Head coach Marvin Dineen, perhaps under the pressure from his superiors provided a wholesale roster revamp for the team at the beginning of World Bowl 38. This was after two debacles in a row where the Empire underachieved considerably. It has been argued by many, including myself, that Dineen should have been fired as well, but he continues to get more and more chances by pointing to the team’s fluke run to the World Bowl 34 championship game. The last World Bowl team did make some progress, so that ensured that Dineen would get yet another chance to keep his job. The majority of the players that were brought on for World Bowl 38 have been brought back as well. Now then, there is only way that this team can go, and perhaps the final excuses that Marvin Dineen can provide that he is a competent World Bowl manager have been made. The team must produce.

There is one regular player that has been continuing to return time and time again, and he has been the MVP of the Rockets every year since World Bowl 34, it seems. That would be placekicker Michael Krizman, who is now 38 years of age. Krizman’s accuracy is the only thing that we have been able to count on, at least giving us piece of mind that when drives continuously stall in the red zone, over and over and over again because Dineen’s unimaginative play calling, that we can at least get three points out of those possessions. Eventually, we will be able to get touchdowns more frequently then settling for field goals, but as long as Dineen is the head coach, I am not optimistic that it will happen. I have to give Krizman his props, though. At least some out there is getting the job done. Actually, let’s give credit to 41-year old punter Matty Gray. There’s another MVP of this team.

I would love to talk about quarterback play, great runs from halfbacks, and exhilarating catches and runs by wide receivers but when I do, it usually about the opponent’s players. This will be second World Bowl with Brian Scanlon, of the Centralia Firebirds, as our quarterback. There was some question as to whether or not he would be back since it did not always seem as though he was on the same page as Marvin Dineen, perhaps because he wanted to take more shots downfield. We could see that more this time, however, with Stephon Sutton (especially) as a starting wideout. The explosive Pocono City wideout has potential to be as good as anyone in the World Bowl if he gets the chances to show his talents. Not sure is that will happen. The one move I am not as excited about is bringing back Thomas Browning as the primary running back. He is a workmanlike back at home, but I am not sure if his style is ideal for the international level. Last time out, he did impress all that much, despite collecting quite a few touchdowns on short runs. I would rather see him as a secondary change of pace back, but that is not going to be the case here.

Defensively, the team also had a lot of changeover and will need to be a little better this time. I thought they were a better group then the offense in terms of overall consistency, but they did not get the plays as often as you would like to see. They did not surrender many big players, but were exploited a little by game managers who were able to run the clock with slower, sustained drives. Lenny Bailey is going to start this time, and the pass rusher could be an integral part of changing that this year.

What I do know, is that we are about to begin. It will start off with a match against Lovisa. Yes, Lovisa, on the road. I didn’t think the day would come where we would play Lovisa again, but here we are. In terms of getting a win, I sure hope we’re in.

As Alastair Jobs prepares to coach his final World Bowl, what is his legacy?

Image
Head Coach Alastair Jobs during a World Bowl XXXVIII match in the Free Republics

BUSUKUMA, NATIONAL CAPITOL REGION- The Banijans prepare for World Bowl XXXIX in an interesting position. It will be the fifth, and final, World Bowl at the helm for Alastair Jobs, the now longtime head coach of the Serpent Eagles. The former Loyola-Istria Coach is not, however, hanging it up at the end of the World Bowl. How does that make sense? Enter the Olympiad. As the Orean/Istria Olympic Bid is the only one before the Olympic Council, they will be the overwhelming favorites to co-host this year's Summer Olympic Games. Listed in the bid is just one demonstration sport, which will be gridiron football, hosted entirely in Banija.

It makes sense- gridiron is a top two most popular sport in Banija, just behind soccer, and with an event like the Olympics coming, a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the world's biggest sporting event in Banija's largest city, having it occur without one of Banija's most popular sports would be just wrong. But Alastair Jobs declaration that he would retire at the end of the Olympics upstaged the Olympic Committee themselves, who run both this sport in Banija and will run half of the next Olympics. Why? Well, pressure has been mounting on the Blue Thunder legend after a pair of disappointing performances in the World Bowl.

Banija's World Bowl history can be divided into two eras- Ezekiel Daniachew, aka the run of the semifinals, and then Alastair Jobs. World Bowl 27 was our first ever World Bowl. We promptly got dominated by actual good sides, and we went 0-10. Banija going winless in their first ever international tournament. Sounds a lot like World Cup 73, doesn't it? Anyways, Then Daniachew took over and things got better. Much different squad style than we have now. He built from the lines, and built a dominant defense. He went 5-2 in his first World Bowl. While we still got KO'd in the group stages, things got interesting. We really launched forward from there, making the semifinals in World Bowl 29, 30, and 31.

We all know what happened at that point. Three straight semifinal losses, and when the RBSA went under entirely and a number of other Banijan sporting institution were facing real financial difficulties, and we didn't enter World Bowl XXXII or XXXIII. But we came back for World Bowl XXXIV, set to take place on home soil. The knockout stages would, anyways. We'd have to make those first. Unfortunately for us, we did not make the knockout stages. Daniachew became the head of the then Gridiron Football Association of Banija(eventually absorbed back into the Olympic Committee of Banija), and then he hired Alastiar Jobs to run the show.

Jobs wanted a completely different style. Daniachew wanted big, meaty lineman and a stout, physical team. Jobs wanted the opposite. He was a legendary college coach. Two decades at Loyola-Istria culminated in a pair of NSCF titles, including an all-time 8-0 record in the NSCF postseason that will likely never be beaten. The fact that he was able to bring Loyola-Istria to glory in NSCF 14, go back to national play for two years and win a title in one of them, and then come back to NSCF 17 and win one again- well, he had truly accomplished what there was to accomplish with the Blue Thunder.

They struggled in World Bowl XXXV, although that was expected. Completely re-writing the offense takes time. But they really came out in World Bowl XXXVI. After knocking out pre-tournament favorites and hosts Ko-oren in that quarterfinal, they were favored in the semifinal against Drawkland. And yet again, they lost. But there was hope for the Banijans. The next World Bowl would be on home soil. And then... Disappointment. Although they went to the quarterfinals, a loss to rival Ranoria at home was a damper. And group play was poor. Barely got out of their League B group, and went 1-5 in their time in League A... Showing clearly that this was far from an elite squad.

And then World Bowl XXXVIII. Disastrous. 2-3 in group play, fourth place, embarrassed and laughed out of the tournament. Pressure mounting on Alastair Jobs. We fell six spots in the rankings, from 13th to 19th. We're in Pot 2 for this World Bowl, not necessarily because it's deserved, but mostly luck. A number of nations ahead of us declined to enter the tournament, and then Delaclava, the host nation, passed on their right to enter Pot 1, which meant a Pot 1 nation did not get bumped down to Pot 2.

What does that mean for Alastair Jobs? What is his legacy? Well, at the college level, he has numerous national championships, and is 8-0 all time in the NSCF Postseason with a Pioneer Bowl win and two NSCF championships. He'll forever be a college football legend. Maybe the greatest college coach of all time. But it's murky at the national team level. He is responsible for our best ever World Bowl, a third place finish in Ko-oren. But in recent years? Disappointment. Early eliminations. Maybe, like in lacrosse, Banijan gridiron fans need to take a hard look at themselves and reset our expectations? We believe we're championship contenders. But is that reality, or an unrealistic expectation?

This World Bowl will be telling. We must get to the knockout stages to salvage his legacy. Ranked 19th, we won't make a championship run. That would be impossible. But at least getting through the group stages, he'd be able to take some momentum into the Olympiad, and on home soil, we could have a chance of him handing off a stronger to the next coach. There's a lot left to say, but right now the legacy is this- a famed college coach who, like so many, couldn't cut it in the professional game. Can he do a good enough job here to re-paint that legacy?

Alright, gridiron fans, we're back with our live coverage of the thirty-ninth World Bowl on SKYNET Sports 12. I'm Rob Coleman.
And I'm Danny Thorne. We're here at the Junction in Jeckland, where the home team Spuds, that's them in black, will face off against the St. Kanye Surge, in white tops and purple pants.
Look at the sea of purple and lime in the audience.
Yeah, Rob, looks like the visiting fans are outnumbering the home fans in some sections of the stadium.
That's the Kanyean people for you. Always there to support their teams whenever and wherever they compete.
Anyway..... the Surge are wanting to improve on their international gridiron debut last season, where they missed the playoffs with a 2-3 record.
Two of those losses came from Taeshan and Lisander, which surprisingly, they're both grouped with again this season.
Let's hope the results go our way this time, Rob.
Right, Danny.

[a graphic of the Group B members appears on screen]

See, there's the Taes, ranked seventh, and the Lisanderians thirtieth, the Yeezies are now joint thirty-third with several other countries.
Xanneria is also there, they're the world's number fourteen side. You might know them as our country's fellow participants in the NSSCRA, or Nationstates Stock Car Racing Association.
As for the unranked, we got Silver Beach, and of course Jeckland.

[the commentators' faces are shown again]

So Danny, what do we know so far about the Surge?
This is still a young team, Rob. No changes from last season. Quarterback Landon Klein, part of the Arena Bowl-winning squad, is known for his cannon arm; his main targets are Bruce Dobler, who has the best hands in the team, and the fast and flashy Patrick Moore.

[cut to the respective players practicing on the field when their name is mentioned]

Well, yeah, the Surge are at their deadliest when attacking through the air, but if the passing game gets into trouble, running back Noah Sherman is there to run over poor defenders.
Let's talk about defense. Nose tackle Robby Edison leads a hard-hitting blitz unit, and then we've got free safety Gary Bradman, who has a sharp eye for the ball and a sharp mind to match, for disrupting offensive plays.
And on special teams, our long distance kicker, James Rasputin.
Don't forget Isaak Clearwater.
Oh yes, Danny. Clearwater of course started back at home as a rather average wide receiver, but he has truly made his mark as a special teams gunner.
Head coach of the Surge is Jeff Delphine, who also mentored the Arena Bowl champion squad. Balanced philosophy, this guy. Players' coach.
Kickoff's in approximately ten minutes. We'll analyze the Spuds next, but first we'll take a break.
Don't go away.
