Ujong City FC leads after match day 14

Ujong

Samudera’s oldest football club, Ujong City FC, has proved its strength after the end of the 14th match day of Royal Samudera League by ending at the top spot, with its rival Palembang United trailing behind with only 5 points in difference. Before we start to recap the results of this season, we would also like to remind our readers about the latest updates from FAS that we have also covered before at the beginning of the season.

More than a week ago, the newly elected Football Association of Samudera (FAS) commissioner has announced several changes to Samudera’s domestic leagues right before the start of the new season. In a press conference held in the FAS’ headquarters in Ujong, Lukman Saragih had stressed that these changes are deemed as important following internal reforms as well as the merging of Labuan and Cempaka Football Association (LCFA)’s domestic leagues into FAS. Saragih also reportedly stated that following this merger, only selected football groups will be able to compete following FAS’ audit, thus reducing the amount of participating clubs in this season.

The first day of match is started with the victory of Labuan Athletics over FC Putera that resulted in a score of 0-2. Palembang United and Muara Nipah FA have also managed to finish in the next top three placements following their respective victories over FC Mutiara and Vita Melaka. Throughout the subsequent matches, Ujong City FC finally managed to climb its way to the top three rank after the club managed to beat Padang Bulls with a score of 0-3, while Labuan Athletics and Muara Nipah FA failed to retain their respective placements following their failure to deliver victories in their respective matches. By the 10th match day, Ujong City FC and Palembang United have solidified their place at the top and second rank, respectively, while the two groups from the island of Cempaka, FC Mutiara and Cempaka Argus, compete for the third place, followed by Labuan Athletics and Muara Nipah FA. The “Eastern Giant”, West Saka FA, surprisingly showed mediocre performances throughout previous matches though it managed to defeat FC Putera with a score of 2-7. However, it was later forced to hand their 5th place to Labuan Athletics following a brutal defeat by Padang Bulls, resulting in a score of 1-5. With the return of their star player Ilham Budiman to the field, however, the club managed to turn the tide and defeat Labuan Athletics with a brutal 0-5, regaining their 5th place. By day 13, it has solidified its place right after Palembang United with 21 points after its victory over the later. By day 14, the 4th place went to FC Mutiara that have went down from their third place after a series of draws from their matches with Vita Melaka, Padang Bulls, and Muara Nipah FA. On the other hand, its main rival Cempaka Argus perched right after in the 5th place with 20 points, one point shy from FC Mutiara’s own 21 points. The worst performance throughout the matches is delivered by FC Putera, that failed to win any of its matches and as a result is placed right at the bottom ten.

Here is the full result table of 1st season of Royal Samudera League:

Kopitiam Tepi Jalan, Ujong
Samudera Darussalam

With a resigned sigh, Surya looked at his wristwatch once again before he continued to read a story that he has bookmarked in the Archive of Our Tales, one of Samudera’s many open source repositories of stories that are published online. The young man with short, neatly tousled black hair quietly humming to a song that is currently playing in his wireless earbuds, before his brown eyes glanced at the upper corner of the screen of his phone to see if the mothe-ahem, his friend, has replied to any of his messages. Sure enough, a flurry of notifications told him that the son of the devil himself has just sent him a few messages back of his own accompanied with several redundant emojis that Surya took the time to bother rolling his eyes at as a response. He is a good friend like that.

HopelessFool: Heyo sorry man I’m lateee :crying eyes_emoji: :folded hands_emoji:
HopelessFool: I’m just a good block away, promise :big eyes_emoji:

Sipping on the God’s blessing on earth that is his cappuccino (along with a good amount of cream and syrup!), the high school student pondered for a while before he put the glass down and typed a response.

NotAFanficReader: 15. Minutes. Reza. You better have a good reason so as to be late to this group assignment session that we’ve planned together two days ago. Be quick, or else.

After sending the message that he carefully crafted to show his annoyance at his classmate’s tardiness, Surya put his phone down back on the table and watched the entrance of the coffee shop like a hawk, ready to pounce on his friend prey once they have arrived.

...

“So….you are telling me that you are late because….you are staying up late watching the last match day of Liga Diraja?”

The hopeless fool himself, a tall, curly-haired teenager that Surya sometimes regretfully thought as a friend, shot him an indignant look, while crossing his arms in a playful manner.

“While also working on several parts of our group assignment, thank you very much…”

Surya rolled his eyes, a smirk gracing his face as he let his eyes wander at the content projected in the screen of a laptop in front of him. “Sure. Let’s take a look, shall we?”

Liga Diraja is a professional association football league in Samudera Darussalam, and is the primary football competition of the league system. Consisting of 10 teams, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with…

“Good enough.” Surya commented, as he let himself read the rest of the first paragraph. “This reminds me of something, though. After the Labuanese and Cempakan teams have just recently pulled out to play in their own league system, three teams are then promoted to play in their place, yes?”

Reza nodded, and the taller boy rose to point at a certain section on the assignment shown on the laptop’s screen. “Yeah. I’ve already mentioned them here.”

…in order to fulfill the vacancies left after the pullout of FC Mutiara, Labuan Athletics, and Cempaka Argus, three of the best performing teams from the second division league are promoted to play in the primary league, comprising Ayer Warriors, Martapura, and Batu Jaya. With the exception of Ayer Warriors, these new teams come from the northern regions of the peninsula, although Ayer Warriors happens to be also the only one to not be based in a city…

“I’ve also made a table for catalogue purposes.”

Image

“Wow, that’s like….surprisingly diligent of you.” Surya mumbled in a deadpan tone, his eyes still glued to the screen while ignoring his partner’s squeak of protest on purpose, a smirk formed on his face. After doing a thorough inspection of his friend’s work, Surya flashed a teasing grin Reza’s way. “Thanks, and good job, by the way. Then that leaves the part where we are analyzing the result of the latest season, right?”

“Answer that yourself, smartass.” With a mock pout, Reza responded, before he lifted a glass on his side of the table and took a few gulps from the iced chocolate malt milkshake that he had ordered before. Returning his attention back to the assignment, Surya only shook his head fondly, before his eyes trailing to his own half-emptied glass of cappuccino for a moment. “Remind me again why we are doing this assignment?”

“Bonus points for our grades, and our PE teacher happens to be a hardcore football fan.”

“....Fair. Anyway, since you’ve already done the other parts, I’ll be the one to work on this one.”

Results for the second season of Liga Diraja

The second season of Liga Diraja was started in the space of a few weeks after the announcement of the results of CMFA Champions League, that saw Ujong City as the only Samuderan club to qualify as runner-up in the finals following its defeat by Sporting Arrachai, who snatched the champion title. 10 local teams that are considered as qualified to be placed in the primary league gathered to compete for the title of champion of this season, and following the end of the second season, the results are reported as follows:

At the conclusion of the season, 180 matches were played, while a total of 294 goals were made (or an average of 1.63 per match). From the results of this season, there are a few notable observations that can be made concerning the performance of the clubs in general. West Saka, or also known as the "Eastern Giant", is a club whose overall performance seems to be decreasing compared to the previous season, where it managed to gain the third placement. The club notably scored less goal in total (28) from the previous season when it managed to make 36 goals, while at the same time failed to intercept a total of 21 goals against it. However, in this season, the club had also managed to earn the distinction as the only team to be able to score the biggest away win, precisely in its match against FC Putera that ended with a score of 2-6. Meanwhile the biggest home win was accomplished by two teams, Ujong City and Muara Nipah, who managed to defeat their opponents Batu Jaya (MD 9) and Vita Melaka (MD 13), respectively, with the end score of 3-0.

Contrary to West Saka's worse performance in this season, a notable rising phenomenon comes in the form of Ayer Warriors, who has become something of a strong force to be reckoned with. The Kampung Tenggiri-based club has managed to achieve a generally better performance than the more well-established clubs such as West Saka and Padang Bulls, proven by its fourth rank in the placement, despite being new in the league compared to many of the other participants.

In general, Ujong City has managed show the best performance out of all the competing clubs in the league for this season despite a few stumbles, such as its defeat at the hands of Palembang United (MD 5) and West Saka FA (MD 6) for two days straight. However, the club has also managed to make the most amount of goals (41) and having the best defense throughout the season by only letting 24 breaches compared to the next best-performing teams, Palembang United (25) and Muara Nipah (27). The worst performing club of this season is undoubtedly Batu Jaya, who while managed to score 4 wins, has also suffered 9 losses in its matches and failed to prevent 30 goals against it.
(Continued in the next page)

"I suppose I'm done." Surya mumbled, sighing and letting some tenseness to roll out of his body. God, his shoulders and back feel stiff. He rolled his shoulders around for a few good seconds, before glancing at his partner across the table, with doubt written all over his face. "Oi, Reza. Do you think this is good?"

"Let me take a look." Reza said, as he pocketed his phone before standing up and started to walk towards Surya's seat. The other teen's eyes then focused on the content written on the screen of the laptop. His brows furrowed slightly as he finished reading the rest of the analysis, before a small smile graced the curly-haired teen's face.

"Well, it's okay, I guess. Want to take a break first? You've been sitting there looking at the screen for....an hour, give or take."

"Alright."

Undisclosed location, City of Mutiara
State of Labuan and Cempaka, Samudera Darussalam

“So….this is it.”

A man in a grey jacket said, his brown eyes locked onto another man in front of him. The other man just scratched the back of his neck in reflex, feeling a little uncomfortable with the intense stare. He glanced outside the window, noticing several pedestrians walking alongside the small café’s large window front from one end to the other, while a few electric cars on the street made up the small number of traffic that this part of the state capital’s eastern district is accustomed to. It was sunny outside. The man sighed at the scenery, before returning his attention back to the man in the grey jacket who is sitting across the small table in front of him, waiting patiently for his response.

“Yes.” He could feel his mouth moved, words spilling out with practiced ease. “Officials in Mainland Samudera have formalized the separation of this state’s football league from Liga Diraja.” Through his similarly brown, albeit a bit on the darker side, eyes, he could see the man in front of him frowned in confusion.

“Do you know why, bang*?”

The man just shrugged. “It’s all rumours, but from what I’ve heard, they are just granting what their peers across the Panjang Strait have been asking them for, ‘said that if the Labuaneses and Cempakans want to shine brighter, then they can have their own league back. Just local clubs competing with each other now, without needing to face the ones in the peninsula.”

The man in grey jacket’s expression looked like he is deep in contemplation. “That….doesn’t make sense, and kind of makes one, at the same time. Wasn’t it Labuan and Cempaka itself that agreed to the merger of the leagues, only just a few years before the latest CMFA Champions competition in Sharktail? Why now they want to have it back?”

“I don’t really care about it, myself.” The man said, before taking a sip from his tea. Dried butterfly-pea flowers not only added an interesting shade of blue to his tea, but subtly adding its own unique taste. Oh yeah, they also use lemongrass. “Probably related to internal politics. FC Mutiara was the only club from this state who made it into the regional stage, but it got trashed, and Ujong City was the only Samuderan representative in the semi-final and final parts of the competition. Probably some of them realized that Labuan and Cempaka would have a better chance if they have more representatives there. Or some of their backers were the ones to realize. Either way, it’s not like the mainlanders care much about football competitions, or at least…..care to the degree that people in this state do. Well, except those bumpkins in West Saka, probably, though they are not exactly ‘mainlanders’.” The man spoke in a quieter tone, barely managing to keep a sneer out. “Not much of an entertainment that can be found there, and from what I’ve heard, some of those kids wanted to join the football club as a form of escape from their small island. Well, West Saka FA kind of performed badly this season, anyhow.”

“Labuan and Cempaka is not that urban either, you know?” The man in the grey jacket raised his eyebrows perplexedly, watching as the man in front of him took another sip of his tisane. “Roughly a third of the state’s population live in rural localities, and besides of Mutiara, Bandar Labuan, and probably Teluk Betung, this state can’t boast any city that is comparable to the ones in the Mainland. A large area of this state is also either forested or being utilized as farms.” He paused for a moment, before continuing. “There is a reason why Labuan and Cempaka is sometimes dubbed as the ‘national granary’.”

The other man just smirked, making a shushing motion with his left hand as he put his drink back on the small table. “Bah, you youngins are obsessed with details. Unlike them, we don’t elect Islamists** to the Majelis. We are not here to talk about politics, however.” He paused, before gesturing towards another glass, laying untouched, near the man with the grey jacket. “Anyhow, won’t you try drinking your beverage? My treat. These are fine butterfly-pea flowers, locally grown and produced. Mandalanusa’s best, if you will.”

The man in the grey jacket stared at his beverage. “I suppose. Thanks bang.”

*Has a literal meaning of “older brother”, used to refer to man who appeared as not much older than oneself.
**The conservative Islamic Union Party (IUP) won the seat representing the electoral district of West Saka in the last general election

“By the way, who do you think will be the champion of this….revived league, bang?”
“I bet it will be FC Mutiara. It is not only the most well-established club, but it is also the best performing team in this state so far. Being the oldest club got its perks, just like Ujong City in the Mainland.”
“That makes sense, although….I won’t discount Cempaka Argus bang. They might be coming from the same city, but their rivalry is famed and historic. Argus the team, not the bird, was formed as a form of resistance by dissatisfied Cempakan Bethinan youths from this part of the city who were objected to various forms of discrimination at the time, back before Palembang repealed the law. Nowadays they are sometimes following FC Mutiara toe-to-toe, even.”
“Well, if we are talking about another potential champion of the league, then we also have Labuan Athletics, who previously make it to Liga Diraja along with the other two. There is also…ah, Benteng Blues.”
“Those marines?”
“Well, they are not exactly marines, but I’d like to think that coming from a city who hosts a large naval base will influence their…style of playing, perhaps.”

A day after the final match day of the championship

"Oh damn, I guess that guy is right that FC Mutiara would be the champion."

The man muttered while looking at his phone. Now in the privacy of his own room, he only wears a black t-shirt and shorts, while his grey jacket was left hanging at the clothesline in the back of the house, the man deemed it to be dirty enough yesterday to warrant a good washing. The smell of alcohol, even if it's faint because he only got spilled a little back at the café during the celebration while going out with his friends to watch as FC Mutiara trampled Labuan Athletics, is not exactly pleasant for him to smell all day.

"They did determine the championship at the end based on the goal difference, and FC Mutiara's happens to be the largest." He mumbled. "Still, that was close enough, what with Cempaka Argus and Benteng Blues also have the exact same number of points."

A small smile tugging in his lips, and the man shrugged, before putting his phone on the desk in his room. "Well, Cempaka Argus still have all the time that it needs to shape up more and finally defeat Mutiara, anyway. I believe they can achieve it in the next match, should they meet again."

It was a shocking result in the 32nd Liga Acastanhada do Campeonato. Starting the competition as the winner of 17th CMFA Champions League, Sporting Arrachai got a huge pressure domestically. The club have won a lot of title in the past decade than any other clubs combine. And although the league has somewhat become boring with them winning over and over again, there are some fans that are wondering how far the club can go. Arrachai hold the first position from the 4th match day with Porto Espinhosa FC and Sporting Praia do Emerita tailing from behind. They hold the position until MD 16 where they were toppled by Sporting Praia do Emerita. Until then, they were only collected a single defeat promoted club, FC. Padana. Sporting Praia do Emerita was able to hold the leadership of the league while Arrachai struggling to came back to the top. The club seems to make a peace with a second position. But then 5 consecutive defeats struck them neared the end of the season. These nightmares make ways to Porto Espinhosa FC. to passed them and claim the second position. While Sporting Arrachai have to satisfied with the third position. And Sporting Cabo finish fourth, completed the top 4 of the leagues.

Sporting Praia do Emerita win is seen as a fresh breeze for the league. It is a rare occasion for a club other than the Big 3 to win the league title. The last time a non-Big 3 club to win Liga Campeonato title was 7 seasons ago by Sporting Cabo. And they are only the fourth non-Big 3 club to win the title after Bahia FC., FC. Amarelda and Sporting Cabo. However, a win by either Sporting Cabo or Sporting Praia do Emerita have been predicted by the fans. Both clubs have been nicknamed as the Lesser Duo. The nickname is given for their constant performance that able to challenge the dominance of the Big 3; Sporting Arrachai, SC. Tabeira and Porto Espinhosa FC. While except for Sporting Arrachai, the performance of the Big 3 is seen declining for the past decade. Porto Espinhosa FC. had only won Copa da Federação while SC. Tabeira is in a medal drought. The rise of Sporting Cabo and Sporting Praia do Emerita have make the fans and football commentators to create a new phrase, The Big 5, which includes the original Big 3 with the addition of the Lesser Duo.
