RP Cutoff for the first cycle of the Hockey Nations League and Coupe Jacques IX will be Sunday, 14th of June, 2020 at 23:59 EST (Montreal-Boston time).

This is the cutoff for the Hockey Nations League (hockey club invitational tournament, preferably intended for the previous season's association champions), and Coupe Jacques IX (hockey national team invitational tournament), with possibility of further opportunities being discussed in near future.

For Coupe Jacques IX, all active or invited members, at the time of each and every cycle cutoff, will have their members counted.

As for Nations' League, all league entries posted by either its active or invited members will be counted, as long as the league results came from the latest cycle of the very associational league.

The membership for the privilege of participation in both tournaments are by invitation-only. The original seven nations listed right below, given their role in foundation of both tournaments, will be granted the automatic founder status where they are allowed to post their entries at any cycle. This is contingent upon their activity; should one of the seven founding nations' spot be empty due to inactivity at the time of the very next cycle, then an invitation will be sent to another nation to fill the gap on temporary or permanent basis, or be left empty. The nation-to-nation succession by the same user will be taken into account as well. For this cycle, the previous LNH results by Donnacona will be accepted and converted into HNL/CJIX entries for the course of this cycle.

Spot allocations will be contingent upon the number of member nations present or invited for the specific cycle; For Coupe Jacques IX, the national team from the equivalent of U20 level or above will be considered, while one associational entry will be permitted, with the preference given to the associational champion. Should there be an odd number of associations available, the Nations League Host is allowed to place a second team to even the number of teams.

Barring exceptional circumstances, the tournament host will be both the In-Character and Out-of-Character host for the course of that tournament. The hosting part will be done on the basis of volunteering, with likely rotation to be set in future.

Members, Cycle 1:
Banija
Donnacona
Gyatso-Kai
Neu Engollon
Royal Kingdom of Quebec
Savojarna
Siovanija and Teusland

Hosts, Cycle 1:Royal Kingdom of Quebec (Hockey Nations League), Siovanija and Teusland (Coupe Jacques IX)

PROPHECY FULFILLMENT: IT TOOK A WHOLE LEAGUE TO WIN THE CUP

By Joaquim Barccetti

You can ask any Neu Engollian where they were when the Ibex survived to the buzzer in the final of the World Cup of Hockey 37. They can usually tell you the pub, the living room, corporate boardroom, or even the train car where they watched it on a small phone screen.

If they can’t tell you, they get a look of shame and there’s an automatic lowering of the head. Next, you hear about an excuse like they were deep in surgery, on strict lockdown during a Neu Engollian Defense Militia field training exercise, near a breakthrough in the lab for cancer research, in solitary confinement, or some other such frivolous excuse. However, they can still tell you about it. As soon as they could see the replay of that game, they were riveted and interruption risked harm to the unaware.

No patriotic, proud Neu Engollian would have willingly missed the culmination of struggle and determined punishment that the Ibex sustained for years to become the top hockey team in the world, if only for two brief seasons. Many Ibex players of the last couple years had started in their late teens, pushing on to cling on well past sensible retirement age until they could take home the World Cup. This past season saw a whole crop of retirements.

Players like Julien LeTranc, Remy Velper, and Maurice Terfram were but wee lads out of high school and University when they got a treasured spot on the Ibex at the same time they were starting their rookie seasons in the NEHL. The Confederacy watched as they lived their lives in front of us in between Cups - marriages, divorces, births, adoptions, scandals, family tragedy, poor decisions and moral struggles, marketing campaigns, and embezzlement victims.
Despite it all, the lineup barely changed for several years, but for a few aging out and a trickle of new blood replacing them.

Then the neighboring Austrak Republik decided they had had enough of being lorded over and threw their helmet in the rink, to take a shot at the Ibex. With particular relishment, Neu Engollians watched the hated political rivals, the Austrakians, struggle to earn respect on the ice and get trounced for it. With that though, comes the regret that they couldn’t see the long awaited match up between the Austraks and the Ibex.

The win at WCoH 37 was rewarding and almost exhausting in the energy it pulled from every fan who rode out the peaks and valleys, as if they too were on the ice, but it was only half the battle won. The fight to retain the Cup the next year seemed anticlimactic in comparison.

Unlike the treasured national sport of rugby, where Neu Engollian domestic clubs from the top AVRU had won the RUCT twice, the ultimate championship of the world’s franchises; no NEHL team has come close to winning the Hockey Champions League, let alone making it past a group stage, in the many years that the NEHL has submitted teams.

How is that possible? One might ask when the Ibex, a virtual super team of NEHL players, has risen steadily during international play to continually get to the final stages of the Cup, how could it be that one of the constituent teams that contributed to that force couldn’t make it to a HCL final?

The Ciavno Jackals, a national powerhouse dynasty, ruled hockey in the Confederacy in the late 1980’s through the mid 1990’s, taking almost every NEHL Championship. They came back in the 2000’s after a brief few trophies won by the Albertville Hedgehogs and that one odd 1998 season that the Schwartzgarten Bolts took it.

Arguably the Jackals were on the wane by the 2010’s, but they still destroyed by a wide margin every national team they played during the annual NEHL Teremaran Exhibition Tournament, which pits the top 3 NEHL franchises to travel and do battle against the national teams of the Teremara region.

The Gauls, Brazilians, Apriconians, Taranimans, and the feared Falkasians and Yellowsians all felt the sting of the NEHL. Not just the Jackals, but the Hedgehogs, Talons, and Lions, lost a total of 2 games combined to Teremaran national teams they played during this much hyped tournament over the decades.

Still, the NEHL didn’t quite seem to measure up in the HCL, and consistently, to the club teams of Valanora. But then again, not many other teams around the globe have either. Vanorian clubs have consistently dominated the semi-finals of the HCL. Vanorian clubs have won 10 out of the 13 HCLs. Not one single final has occurred in the thirteen editions of the HCL that didn’t have one or both teams hailing from Valanora. That makes the previous statistic a little easier to understand with the odds so stacked.

Those three clubs that did not happen to hail from the Eternal Realm and defied such steep odds deserve some more extra special recognition. The Kingston Knights of the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, who took the 3rd HCL; Metallurg Matochkingrad of Novaya Zemlya who triumphed in the 5th edition; and the Reynea Monsoons of Taeshan who managed to overcome the odds more recently in the 11th edition - their accomplishments total up to so much more than just winning an international championship, again considering the odds they faced.

We’re wading in waters of controversy now. The HCL is hosted in Valanora, with the final always held in Gallen’s Cove, Stormguard, in the Eternal Realm.
In addition, many of the world’s hockey officials, including the World Cup of Hockey Federation’s President, have been Vanorian, year after year. No one could make a direct line from the accusations of biased officiating and organizational obstacles to someone challenging the Vanorians, but one would be obtuse to think that there weren’t some highly bizarre and beyond coincidental happenings occurring.

One could argue the case that the Gardel’s publication of this very article is bringing more possible wrath upon Neu Engollian hockey franchises. I would argue that the NEHL, right up to the national team, the Ibex, have already been so far afoul of that line that any more shade is not even a valid concern at this point.

Despite all obstacles, the NEHL, and the players that compete in it, including dozens of international stars from Mercedini, Espar, Falkasia, Ontorisa, Kaboomlandia, Cosneolta, Glisandia, and several other nations, all soldier on and give their best on the ice, as well as their hearts out to their adopted communities off the ice.

NEHL players that also do double duty in the Ibex have given over a good chunk of their lives to claw the Ibex’s way into the finals after all these years. Being immersed in the greater international domestic club and sharing and taking in those players from across the hockey multiverse certainly has helped.
Without being bloodied in the fiercer NEHL competition of recent years, they might never have gotten to the level to seize the 37th and 38th World Cup, and the bronze in the 39th.

We all salute them all and wish them the best in the upcoming Hockey Nations League and Coupe Jacques tournaments. I think at least most can agree they stand a better chance, or more aptly equal chance than in the past competitions previously mentioned.

Next column, I’d like to delve into the current NEHL rosters and look more into those international players. Your feedback is always welcome:

QHL Offseason Preview

Sook Jin Doh-Namgoong

QUEBEC CITY, CAPITALE-NATIONALE - Hey all! So another offseason has come and gone, as many players changed teams in what was a rather surprising free agency period. While this had partly meant that while Kingston Knights barely saw losses from their Prenneau Cup team, many others have witnessed some alterations that we should look into the future for! With that said, we are gonna take at some of the things we should look into the upcoming QHL season, and answer the most pressing questions of the offseason.

Which of the two will come on top : Koreana or CSKA? - Quebec City and Montreal, for centuries, have hated each other. Whether it be their statuses as comparable to RLStates’ Sankt-Peterburg vs. Moskva, or Paris vs. Londres, that’s been going on for five centuries and is unlikely to change at any point. And of course, Koreana and CSKA are at the very forefront of the city to city battle. Montreal Koreana, widely viewed (alongside its other sports teams) as the athletic bastion of Korean-Quebecois movement of 1872-1947 that fuelled the Quebecois nationalism and the Commonwealth Movement thereafter, is one team best described for its flair and embellishment. CSKA Quebec, on the other hand, is like all too reminiscent of the Quebecois institution repped up by the Quebecois Government and the bureaucracy - efficient, regimented and also notoriously clean (aka. Not physical enough to some).

Just by this alone, you’d see the extreme contrast that stands between the ‘Nationalistes’ and the ‘l’Armee Rouge’ that have fuelled the Quebecois sports over the course of the past 150 years and is expected to continue for 1500 more. They have combined for 41 Quebecois titles the past (17 Koreana, 23 CSKA) and usually, the QHL draws even better when both teams do well. Fortunately, this year’s going to be one of those few years this millennium where they are both contenders, and we are all the more excited for it. Koreana, led by elite offensive defenceman Chad Park-Rodriguez, can score at all ceilings, while CSKA, already blessed with upcoming national team (WCoH 40) captain Ray McMillan, is likely to finish with the fewest goals allowed this year after signing Novopetrogradian superstar Alexander Kaprizov to guard the fort. While there lies plenty of possibility for upsets and even early exits, the narrative like this will nonetheless be exciting to keep an eye on.

One Final Season for the Superhuman - Four titles, twenty five seasons and a couple of deep runs in World Cup of Hockey later, Pascal Yoon is finally looking to hang up his skates for a life after hockey. The forty-three year old CSKA centreman, who has made his announcement at the end of the previous season’s Eastern Conference Finals loss to Iqaluit Silver Wings, that he will be playing for one more year before retirement. Of course, the centre of attention no longer goes to him; the whole nation and the world these days are busy watching Ray McMillan, Yoon’s successor as the best all-around centre in the country. He’s very happy about how the transition happened so smoothly during the past seven years, and feels like he can let it go. At this point, he seems to be most interested in transitioning to sports management, where he has certainly made some notable marks with successful recruitment of stars in past offseasons. Given his hockey acumen and the number of times he mentions hockey management and statistics, we’d be quite surprised if he doesn’t. Still, he has a whole retirement tour ready for him throughout the year, so maybe that’s not exactly on top of his mind right now. Stay tuned for more!

Goalite Controversy in Kenora? - These days, good goalies are hard to come by in the league, and I mostly mean Quebecois here. Of course the Novopetrogradians and the Norrish (both Norrehavn and Norrskie Zasousti in this case) have some of the finest goalies in the Commonwealth. Still, these days we just don’t see that many domestic-to-domestic goaltender controversies, which is why the situation in Iqaluit looks fascinating enough. Vincent Kigatilik may be the second-best Quebecois goaltender right now and he has done enough to prove the naysayers wrong. The problem is that, of course, the surprising ripening of Kim Gyu-Jin. The twenty-year old, who was drafted 11th overall by the Thunderwolves, was signed by the Beyreuth University in Kingston last offseason in a surprising move that saw many in surprise, especially as Kim still had one more year of eligibility left. Of course, Kim’s not expected to start right away and we should expect Kigatilik to start 55+ games this season, but it’s clear that he was signed with the eventual goals to replace Kigatilik, who has shown at various times his discontentment with the organisation. Of course, Kenora’s a small city of only 350,000 and the words spread quickly there, however supportive the northwestern borderlands of Ontario province may be. So, while the local media and the head coach Michelle Dachyshyn have been supportive towards him in general, the signing should still keep the tensions up in the air. Whether who wins it by the season’s end, that we’ll find out come this April.

Can Kingston Repeat? - Well, yes. Nobody likes admitting it, but hey, the Knights are Prenneau Cup Champions. It's partly thanks to their star-studded top line (Pellan-M.Park-K.Goh) and goaltender Jakub Navratil, but not just them. They have Anna Yango as the team captain, and while Rodney Paul-Rhodes may be the least distinguishable among second pairing defencemen, he's that reliable of a defensive factor for all. And of course, coach Woodcock is somehow still standing at age 79, and sooner than later they'll have to find a replacement for the man who's been all-powerful and all-mighty at same time for the Knights. There have been various rumours surrounding who will be his replacement - some says it'll be Marc-Andre Bernard or Xavier Anctil, but more ambitious and reaching of the commentators have even come out and openly said Alexandre Browne, who has done wonders for major juniors team Cornwall Cavaliers. All in all, Woodcock has yet to say when he'll retire, so guess it's all up in the air.

Anyways, expect them to challenge Koreana, Prince Eric and Kenora for the best of the West.

MEMOIRES D'ATHLETES

HOW WE PLAY HOCKEY IN RURAL, NORTHERN QUEBEC

Joakim Brackenbury-Lindauer / Severine Kweon
Editor : Johannie Guillemot

Editor's Note : Normally, we only have one person to talk about the life and sports in certain community or country. Of course, the exceptions do exist and it did here when both Severine Kweon and Joakim Brackenbury-Lindauer, two players who both hail from St-Joseph-de-Montrose, Abitibi, esponded with a YES to us.

Severine Kweon : Okay, thanks. So how do we start this? I’m somewhat new to this even though it’s 2043.

Joakim Brackenbury-Lindauer : What’s this? What we recordin’ here Sev?

Kweon : Hey, hey. Watch out. We’re communicating this to people on rest of the world! C’mon. We know you got it!

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Aight, aight, aight. Let’s dewwwwwww it.

Kweon : That’s more like it! Yeah, so we’re off to a dopey ass start. Obviously the crowd is not as electric as they may have been before, but hey, it’s okay.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Anyways, folks. So we are Severine Kweon and Joakim Brackenbury-Lindauer, two QHL players coming out of a small town in northern Abitibi. Anyways I play forward, usually centre, for Moncton Blades, and I'm happy to be here.

Kweon : And likewise on my front. I play defenceman, on both sides, for Prince Eric Orca, and I'm also happy to be here.

Brackenbury : We both come from St-Joseph-de-Montrose, a small town pop'n and for all that people here know, it does sound hick as fuck.

Kweon : No doubt. And that hickness doesn’t go anywhere when you play in the big leagues.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Exactly! Now the thing is, when you live in an isolated northern town, where the roads can get dangerous and trains come twice a day, hockey’s everything in your life. One of the earliest memories was watching the Wadnerers play before their soldout crowd at Colisee QNR, and I stood up and slapped the stick on ice few hundred times like how they all did. My arms were flying around, I was chanting. It was such a wonderful thing.

Kweon : Oh yeah, you were able to afford that. Man, we couldn’t and me and my brothers had to watch the game with our neighbours. Obviously, by the time we all got to school, all the taverns just let us schoolchildren in, so I guess those were some trade-offs.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Can’t bring the skates to the pub though.

Kweon : Nope. Anyways, Joakim’s right. When you’re a Quebecois, especially out in the rural towns, hockey’s everything. I mean it’s probably the same with lots of places where they have rural towns that love hockey, but expect that across the vast nation. It’s really part of our bones. Of course, for me that was something I was initiated into the culture from early on. Coming from a multigenerational family with both maternal and paternal grandparents, parents and obviously six children on a farm would do that.

Anyways, what we used to do is to go all to the local drive-in theatre. Of course, we all know what movies they screen for couples in town or nearby, but there’s only hockey, and hockey on Saturdays. We first go and play for four to six hours, sometimes on high school teams, other times on club teams. Then, we would head down to the theatre to watch saturday night hockey with whole families.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : To be fair, it was like a ritual for everybody in town. Boys would have their ways, girls would have their ways, and we’d still say all went well. Of course it wasn’t often that the Wanderers won, but hey, an occasional win or two was still good.

Kweon : Of course you get to say that, because you came from town like when you were eleven. You weren’t even from here!

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Sure, but hey, wasn’t my fault grandparents lived there, on that huge plot of land named Lindauer Grange. Anyways, parents’ business weren’t doing so well, so they decided to sell our home in Quebec City and back to the family range to take over family business with Apiaries. So, of course, I wasn’t so much a Wanderers fan.

Kweon : Yeah. I remember you struggling a bit with basic physical play there. You were skilled but didn’t have much else then. Coach Michalchuk wasn’t happy with the first season you came, I remember.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Yeah. You see - CSKA's youth system didn’t teach me a ton about physical play as much as you’d think from CSKA. That’s not how they rolled with it, and they never goin’ to either. So, of course, when I arrived here, I had to somewhat relearn the way to handle the physical style. Frankly, a stunning experience. And it’s not like we were huge then either.

Kweon : Nope, but it’s not like people cared so much. We were all used to some push and shove, and of course smashing each other - of course, never the head because you get into huge trouble the very next day at school. But the adults stayed oblivious, as long as it wasn’t killing anybody.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Oh, certainly. 10/10 that.

Kweon : Man, I loved to play a ton as a kid. Whenever they’d have the outdoor rinks ready, we’d all go outside and play on frozen ponds or even better, lakes.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : I know right? Free icetime, just with the boys, and we could just skate for hours and hours and hours...and if there were really nobody around, you’d just skate for fun and maybe drink a bit...actually don’t mention that. I know mum’s watching.

Kweon : C’mon Joakim, you’re twenty four now. Don’t bother so much with that.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : You know this also goes to Siovanija and Teusland, which means that the very next day, they may have ‘QHL player, a nobleman emigre’s descendant, an alcoholic. Especially the player who's best known as going up and down the CSKA forward depth each and every moment.

Kweon : There, there, no negativity on this holy interview space. We have better things to worry about, right?

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Of course. Though the same goes to your Blades. Man, if you guys were playing on Western Conference, maybe the chances to win the cup wouldn't look so bad after all..

Kweon : Shush, you. I'd be playing top pairing if I were on that Orca defence. Jesus....

Brackenbury-Lindauer : I don't recall you to be on top pairing on last thursday's match, so that's a no from me, captain.

Kweon : Well that’s true, I guess....

Quebec Hockey League Winter Classic : 19:00 Match
Winnipeg Giants vs. Jeongju Huskies @ Winnipeg Coliseum, Winnipeg, Manitoba

Marc Trepanier : Good evening, Quebec, and welcome back to the annual broadcast of the Quebecois Hockey League Winter Classic! This evening, we’ll be in Winnipeg for the third time in the Winter Classic history, as the Winnipeg Giants will face the visiting Jeongju Huskies to start the brand new year! Obviously, this match looks to be yet another special one for the players on the ice, and the fans on the stands, but there’s more than just that for our broadcast. Tonight, Renee Tyree and Guillaume Shin are here with us. Guys, what do you think about tonight’s match?

RT : For what we know, both the Huskies and the Giants are on a solid form. Both teams have done well in their past five games, winning three each and whatnot. The Huskies lost on last week’s Hockey Night in Quebec on a heartbreaking night for their starting goaltender Hector Gingras. He allowed a tough penalty shot goal to start the game, then had a stellar night in 47 performance on a 1-2 loss to lowly, lowly California City. Obviously, they have turned around their form and stayed undefeated since then, so we gotta see how they turn out.

GS : In my case, Renee, there’s something good coming from Winnipeg altogether. Of course, the Giants had a couple of rough games earlier on, with that poor draw to the Osprey and of course, a flat-footed offence in Kingston last night. But, the organisation’s remaining positive to what appears to be a huge hole they may have digged themselves from earlier, especially as Georgina Mance and Bobby Mbabazi are finally out of IR list, to play the game tonight.

MT : In that case, we are going to head to Winnipeg Coliseum, where our field analysts, Hwang Yoon-Mi and Johan Nygren, are waiting....

Period 1 Scoring Summary
02:54 - Winnipeg Giants goal scored by Bobby Mbabazi, assisted by Henri Ancou, Selina Dinwiddle (1-0)
09:11 - Jeongju Huskies goal scored by Ilya Loktionov, assisted by Jeremy Hong, Joh Soo-Yeon (1-1)

‘Gaining the zone Moh, has Ancou moving to the net and behind. Andersen is minding the back, as Moh passes it to Dinwiddle. Dinwiddle turn it around and then. Ancou turn it and drop. Mbabazi shoots and SCORES! 579 days, BOBBY! Mbabazi scores the first goal of the Classic, on his first shit back!‘

Period 2 Scoring Summary
11:50 - Jeongju Huskies PP goal scored by Elle Chiasson-Stroman, assisted by Jeremy Hong (1-2)
13:22 - Jeongju Huskies goal scored by Gabrielle Clegg (Penalty Shot, 1-3)
14:54 - Winnipeg Giants goal scored by Bobby Mbabazi, assisted by Georgina Mance (2-3)

‘And there’s a takeaway by Hong, who passes it to Chiasson-Stroman. She dekes past Dinwiddle with ease, and now he’s dashing to the net. Now she’s skating, far and wide. Smooth, lean strides she’s gliding over the ice. She Goes, She Shoots, and She Scores! Jeongju Huskies are up two one, against the home Winnipeg Giants. The game's only getting tougher for the Giants, as the Huskies quickly proved them wrong just when they felt like they were this close from a lead, first with a safe and now with this goal...’

Period 3 Scoring Summary
9:14 - Winnipeg Giants SH goal scored by Henri Deschatelets, assisted by Brian McKean, Naomi Papadopoulos (3-3)
18:22 - Jeongju Huskies goal scored by Gabrielle Clegg, assisted by Yi Seung-Dong (3-4)

‘Yi Seung-Dong passes from the corner, here’s the shot and GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAZOOOOO! CLEGGERCLEGGERCLEGGERCLEGGERCLEGGERCLEGGER, GABBY ‘THE BABY’ CLEGGGGGGGGG! Can you believe it? The pass, the shot and the goal!

'The Giants may have had the spotlight with the comeback of Bobby Mbabazi, but it looks like Gabby Clegg will score the Game-winner for the visiting Huskies, as Jeongju pulls one more ahead with one thirty eight left on time...’

To continue from last time...

Joakim Brackenbury-Lindauer : Well, looks like we’ll have to pick up where we left off last time.

Severine Kweon : Anyways, hello guys. This Joakim and Severine again. I hope you are all doing well and whatnot.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Anyways, playing hockey just a natural way of life. For me part of it was to watch Siovanija and Teusland play in couple of World cups. Of course, those were good times. Obviously it’d be ideal to watch the Teus play live, but we didn’t always have time to do so. Instead, we’d just watch the recaps or highlights, or just find the video off VousTube.

Severine Kweon : He’s a Teus, Atlantian Oceania!

Brackenbury-Lindauer : But at least we aren’t those up north. God, not those guys. We lost to them last January goddarn it!

Kweon : Which ones - Donnaconans?

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Obviously.

Kweon : At least they’re fun to watch. Lovely people up in Marianopolis. Of course they beat us on round of sixteen, but their World Juniors run was quite impressive. Lots of key guys to watch as well.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Only because you’ve never been to Botleyyyyyyy. I have an uncle there named Terrence, quite a dreadful guy. Would rather die than to see that f-

Kweon : Hey, hey, hey. We have kids watching or reading this thing here. Let’s get back to the topic.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Anyways, it’s always been on our minds to rep the Grim Reapers. It’s an honour to don the jersey, they used to say, and I was lucky to have taken part in it four years ago. The blue and white, and the fabric, all brings people tingling and other good feelings.

Kweon : That had me think a bit about playing on a same club. Us two, hometown friends, playing together for both Quebec and on same city ice….that’d be pretty dope, isn’t it?

Brackenbury-Lindauer : You bet! That would be the greatest feeling ever- two hometown homies playing on the same national team. Of course, that rarely happens in a country of 78 million, but never say never. It happened in past, and it may happen again in future.

Kweon : That makes me wonder - I remember you used to smoke after every match, just to rewind and think a bit about the long night’s sleep after the end of every game. My mum used to give you hard time with that on our drives back to town. Do you still do that?

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Nah, you know me now. Wife wouldn’t let me do it, and for best reason. I just have a nap on my bathtub whether back in my apartment or hotel room.

Kweon : This guy loves to nap, folks.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Sure dang you know it. Let the man get his rest. R-E-S-T!

Kweon : Still he needs his naps. Let’s be honest, Joakim always had that mentality where he seldom shook or quiver upon the sight of a game. He’s the real iceman out there. How many you take these days?

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Still the same two naps a day, both on a cold bath!

Kweon : That's Joakim right there. He did that back in high school, he also did that at college, and well you guys all know him too. Don’t know how he can do that. Not sure how the rest helps, but hey, still a good thing. I’m usually turnt up whenever I come to the rink and be like ‘I CAME TO PLAY’.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Exactly, You always play the same music over and over again.

Kweon : Of course, that’s why I come to the rink and the lockers early. I get zoned into my music early, so I just keep the vibes going for the whole eight hours I will be there, as we under Cocoa-bo.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Hahahaha. Cocoa-bo. Man, we’re gonna get in trouble for that. Don’t you know Cocoa-bo got banned in Quebec just last fall?

Kweon : Of course! Lots of people trying to use them to spike drinks on a bar- scary stuff out there. Anyways, when I’m taking the bus to the hotel after a game, that’s when it starts feeling like Cocoa-bo. Lots of music, lots of exhilaration, all that fun stuff.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Oh yeah. And you do listen to, well, a bit of everything. Somehow the Arena DJs like your playlists enough to play them on the arena.

Kweon : Of course they do. Haha. Maybe that’ll be the call for good playoff run down the road for the Orca.

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Oh, absolutely! This is the Blades’ year to sweep them all and go through. I can feel it in the air, as if I’m about to score a goal.

Kweon : But you gotta get past CSKA. That will be almost impossible to go through, not with how bubble-y this Blades team have been playing…

Brackenbury-Lindauer : True. We aren’t playing as well as we should be, but still, don’t discount teams out just yet.

Kweon : I guess. Whoever progresses further gets a new golden watch after the season ends!

Brackenbury-Lindauer : Bet! Anyways, that’s how we play hockey in Northern rural Quebecois towns. Lots of hitting, lots of hometown camaraderie and of course, lots of outdoors. We all love smashing it up.

OMASHU, EARTH KINGDOM --- The 2020.2 Season has been completed, with the winning team having their laps hoisting the Kuruk Cup.

Editor's Note: This article, originally written by Aaron Yitsune and running during the CENTER ICE Programme on ASPN.go.gki. We have reprinted it here in its entirety and original format.

Itakawai Lightning.

Omashu Badgermoles.

Two teams whose mascots represent two of our Nations' historical elements; Fire and Earth. The fact that the Itakawai Lighting are located in the southern Water Tribes and are a Mandalorian team aside, the idea that two elements are fighting for he chance to hoist Kuruk's Chalice for the first time in the New Restructuring Era is not lost on those who attended the games. With the King Bumi Arena and the Sundari Times Forum each packed to the brim, even the players were as excited as ever.

”Going into this season, with a new structure to the regular season, new point system, and even the playoffs changing, it really put a new spin on the season. Brought us all some new excitement and reminded me of my first season all the way back in 2016.2”

Hed Torvik, Defenceman, Itakawai Lightning

To say that most players felt similiarly would be an understatement. Many of those interviewed spoke of the excitement of a new structure, the fun in playing different teams than usual, and even the differences in the All-Star Game.

Why is change good?

”In years past, the rigourous structure of play - 100 games, conference play putting more weight on interconference play and less weight on cross-divisional play - a point system which was not as cut and dry - may have took a bit of fun from the game. And I know, the idea of grown men having "fun" playing professional sports might seem odd to some, for me, it is the key to life. To have fun whenever you can. And if you can have fun playing hockey in front of twenty-five thousand fans who are having just as much fun as you are... well, it makes the game that much more enjoyable.”

Kad Skirata, Director of Avatarian Hockey

With the first Finals in the New Restructuring Era, the Home/Away status of each series is as follows:

Team A vs Team B:
  1. Game 1: A Home
  2. Game 2: A Home
  3. Game 3: B Home
  4. Game 4: B Home
  5. Game 5: Regular Season Points Leader Home
  6. Game 6: A Home
  7. Game 7: B Home

Which puts the Omashu Badgermoles at Home for Games 1 and 2, and Game 5 and 6 if need be, with the Itakawai Lightning getting home ice in Games 3 and 4, and a Game 7 if needed for this Best-of-Seven series.

2020.2 KURUK CUP FINALS

Omashu Badgermoles 2-0 Itakawai Lightning
Omashu Badgermoles 4-1 Itakawai Lightning
Omashu Badgermoles 3-5 Itakawai Lightning
Omashu Badgermoles 4-3 Itakawai Lightning
Omashu Badgermoles 2-0 Itakawai Lightning

Omashu Badgermoles win the series 4-1

The Finals, which were attended by His Holiness Avatar Aang and given his blessings before the first puck drop, would be as exciting as the rest of the Post Season.

In the first game at Omashu, the Badgermoles would shut out the Lightning 2-nil, bringing their usual offensive power house playstyle onto the Lightning. Game Two would be much the same, with Ming Zhanshi and Dang Mun-Hee faltering and letting in four goals, while Kil'or Alecyc had the only goal in 165 minutes of play.

Returning to Itakawai for Games Three would prove to be quite the inspiration for the Lightning, as they managed to score five goals against a somewhat off-kilter Badgermole team who was without the Permacrete Brick; Shu Pianhuo had a mysterious stomach bug which many feel was a cover for a bit of strain from a rough practice skate the morning before. Relicyc Tho-An managed his second post-season hat trick, and between Ero'ki Nacer and Hed Torvik, the defence was able to slow down the Badgermoles enough and keep them to just three goals.

Unfortunately for Itakawai, their luck would run out, as on the return to Omashu, the Lightning would falter and lost Game 4 by a lone goal thanks to a late-period power play off a Wang Unaluk tripping penalty, and the eventual sweep in Game 5.

Heartbreaking for the Itakawai, who were looking to bring the Kuruk Cup home for the first time in the New Restructuring Era. Heartwarming for the Badgermoles, who were able to, not only win the Kuruk Cup, but were able to win it at home infront of both the Avatar and their arena's namesake; King Bumi of the Earth Kingdom City of Omashu.

Confetti fell, Badgermoles yelled, and a giant chunk of near-pure silver was paraded around as if it were the victorious warrior at the center of trial-by-combat. Soon, the names of all those who wore the Badgermole sweater this season and those who worked at Bumi Arena, would be inscribed and etched in silver to be added to the bottom rung of the Kuruk Cup.

For five seasons, those names would be seen by every one who lifted the cup. Long after the ring was removed - beneath the Kuruk Cup were five rings, each one replaced by the winning team of the current season - it would reside in the Avatarian Hockey Hall of Fame, to be seen by fans of the game for years and years to come.

OFF 49 SONG Unataq (C) 33 R University of Adirolf Gaoling Bears

The first line remains relatively unchanged from the last World Cup, with the defensive pair of Watang Kouji and Kang Deniigi creating a solid back line. Watang, out of the Fire Nation, is known for powerful forechecks and his insane speed on the backskate. These two assets pair well with Kang, who has a solid career of skills and tricks to pull from as he has continued to define himself for a team that many feel he will retire with in the near future.

In net is Bao Lin, who is entering his final year with the Ba Sing Se Bears. Having kept a 2.5 GAA and a 0.892 ASV%, Bao is well-known for using his stand-up style to quickly stop play and break up any of the opposition’s momentum on the play.

The forward line, albeit a bit old, was shaken a bit with the removal of Nestori Huan from center, and bring Hosaka Severi up from the second line; while Hosaka’s style of play is more fitting for a second line, Head Coach Ishii believes that his blinding speed on the ice will greatly assist the wings’ and their passing ability. Cheung Sepi, of Kelita fame, finds himself on the left side, where his impressive hockey vision and passing ability pairs well with the strong bodied and defensively-minded play style of team captain Song Unataq.

OFF 17 KIL'OR Alecyc 24 L Roku University Itakawai Lightning

With Hiteki Kia having 54 caps on the Ice Bisons under his belt, he is the most seasoned player on the team, and rightfully wears the first A. Renowned for his ability as "damage control" through the last three World Cups he played in, Hiteki is set to do much the same now that he is paired with the youthful vigor of the "Mandalorian Shield" that is Hed Torvik. Standing at just under two metres in height and tipping scales at 101 kilograms, Hed is an impressive northern Mando who has shown time and time again in his five seasons with the Itakawai Lightning that you do not want to be between him and the boards at any time.

On offense, Wang Torsti from Si Wong finds himself on the left side of the ice, opposite another Itakawai favored son in Kil'or Alecyc. Both men played in the Southern Island Conference in college, and often times faced off against each other as their two schools - Adirolf State University and the University of Kom'rk - where strong and very heated rivals. While their professional teams do not inspire the same rivalries, both have remained in touch throughout the years and spent a great deal of time together preparing for the Tryouts. In the middle, the once first-liner Nestori Huan finds his new role on a line that is more known for damage control rather than scoring. However, with his impressive knowledge and vision that had earned him his spot on the first line last World Cup, Huan may very well prove his doubters wrong and bring some glory to the second line.

OFF 33 SOUMA Shichiro 26 R Yokoua State University Senlin Archers

With Ki'an Losow, who was last seen on the National Team's Travelling Corps back in WCoH XXVI, serving as the veteran pillar of the third line, you can be sure that this line is the true "clean-up crew" of the Ice Bisons. A strong defenceman who once played solely on offense, Losow has no fear in leaving his zone and pushing in for a quick goal from one of the most unlikely players. Sure, his form is a bit on the unrefined side of the spectrum, but for what he lacks in technical mastery, he makes up in the psychological.

Pairing with Losow is the youngest player on the Ice Bisons, Ero'ki Nacer, who has finished his final season at Hatsu University. With his imposing size and fierce nature, expect many players to get right up and close to Nacer, only to have them get thrown into the glass with such vigor that they may second-guess any decision to stand up again.

Offensively, the third line is filled with strong passers and even stronger shooters. Both Relicyc Tho-An and Souma Shichiro have done amazingly well in skills competitions involving accuracy and shot speeds, with Kobushi Kaede serving as the trapper of the line; with an impressive 190cm wingspan, Kobushi can easily reach out and take hold of any enemy puck without so much as a blink.

Seelowe Marlesee to Enter International Hockey Championship

Your Strauss Cup Champion Seelowe Marlesee will be playing for another trophy, this time on the international stage.

The newly created Hockey Nations League will see some of the top club hockey teams from some of the top hockey countries in the world competing at the highest level, including clubs from nations such as the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, Donnacona, Gyatso-kai, Neu Engollon, Savojarna and Banija.

In addition to the club tournament, an international friendly competition, the Coupe Jacques IX, named for the former King of Quebec, will involve the national teams of these countries. The first edition of the tournament will be hosted by Hockey Siovanija & Teusland, with details coming soon, although it’s expected the tournament will be held in the cities of Borograd and Chernovets.

It’s been a whirlwind summer for Seelowe Marlesee since they captured the club’s sixth Strauss Cup title in the 6 game victory over the Stelburg Kaisers. Days after the championship win, the victory parade carried the players and the Cup down the Nordseestrasse, with Seelowe fans from across the city coming out to honour their heroes.

“We’re just getting started,” said team captain and arguably the best player in the Ehrenliga, Timo Schlager, at the parade. Schlager, a star for his country and club, had 10 points in the championship series and won the Stoyan Kirilov Trophy as MVP of the Strauss Cup Playoffs. Linemate and fellow national team star Frank Heider said “I think, with the team we have, we expect to be back competing next year and for many years after that.” Goaltender Ventseslav Valchev, acquired in a midseason trade with Rudar Trkev, said that “Coming into this group, I instantly knew the character of the room and the great chance we had to do something special, and so to win the Strauss Cup is such an honour.”

Since then, the Cup has been travelling across Siovanija & Teusland, visiting the hometown of each player. For Schlager, the star winning his first Cup at age 25, bringing the Cup back to his neighbourhood in St. Jakob was described as one of the highlights of his life. Right winger Torsten Bohm, who scored the Cup winning goal in game 6 overtime, brought the Cup to the peak of Mount Danneberg, the highest point in Teusland. And the goalie, Valchev, took it to his home village of Telc, home to 117 people.

They’ll all be back in training soon, however, getting ready for this new tournament. Speaking to the players, they seemed excited about the opportunity. “It’s always good to test yourself, test our team, and I think we’re all very excited about this tournament,” said Frank Heider. Timo Schlager said that “Playing some of the best clubs in the world can only make us better, and we’re looking forward to the opportunity.”

The tournament will be hosted in the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, and Seelowe Marlesee will be looking to do themselves and the league proud. Naturally, we wish them the best of luck, and hope they can bring an international title to our fair city of Marlesee.

In case you missed the Ehrenliga season, or if you just want to relive Seelowe’s Cup run, here’s the RBC Sports full recap of the latest season, from start to finish:

2043-44 QHL Season : In Review

Sook Jin Doh-Namgoong

QUEBEC CITY, CAPITALE-NATIONALE - Hey all! Now we have finally come to the end of yet another regular season, as the QHL enters into the Prenneau Cup Playoffs. Let's see what were some of the things we have learned from the season and whatnot...

1. We were right, CSKA and Montreal did play well - Earlier in the season we predicted that this will be one of those years where CSKA and Montreal are expected to be heavy contenders. This was because both teams, after a couple of years where they had the inconsistency problem, had finally put together a team with excellent talent depth in all three positions, and also both their coaches are proven winner in various levels of this sport. And they seemed to have read the article, as both Koreana and CSKA topped the conference standings with 119 and 122 points to add. It was a pretty straightforward season and nobody’s surprised they did well - both teams knew how to score, to prevent goals and of course, placed top 10 in both special teams categories. It’s almost as if they’re on cruise control. Still, it remains to be seen how that will translate to the playoffs- just earlier we witnessed the struggle Koreana held on the final stretch of the season as they were beat out to finish by the continuously consistent CSKA side. Will this mean anything in the playoffs? We’ll have to see- that’s for another time.

2. Everybody’s watching this rookie...or that rookie! - The Quebecois certainly didn’t do well in the World Juniors, but the excitement generated by the tournament, one of most successful hockey tournaments of any kind in recent memory, seemed to have brought increased interest in the homegrown product. While none of the players from the world juniors team played right upon their return, some of the post-tournament excitement was felt when team captain Benoit Starmer-Jodoin and alternate captain Michael McKenna had a surprising early exit to their major junior season. Their immediate call-up, to Kingston Knights and Goose Bay Flames, seemed to have come around the right time as both teams were able to make a playoff push in the right time. Now, more are looking forward to see how the Flames and the Knights will do come this playoffs, with Knights being expected to win a couple of series and Flames serve as a dark-horse.

3. There isn’t a clear-cut favourite for MVP - Well, it is hard to say who’s the best player in the league right now. Most of the players from the Quebecois national team’s heyday have retired or will be retiring to the sunset very soon, and without a full national team on display the past two World Cups, it is hard to say who is the clearcut #1. The general consensus seems to rally upon Kingston left wing Eileen Pellan, Gander Jets’ goaltender Marija Svatos (Norrskie Zasousti) and of course, Montreal Koreana centre Han Gwang-Soo. But there are a couple of decent challengers who we should mention: PLI centre Dannick McQuaid and Halifax Highlanders right wing Konstantin Loktionov (Novopetrograd). Among them, a league MVP will be selected, though in a season where the conference-leaders are stacked AF and no player has taken a particular leap ahead of the other on a relative basis…..it’ll be very hard to take a guess on who will be the lucky one to win.

4. Smallest Market, Biggest Heart - Things look only good for PLI Islanders now, especially as the team on the small island of 276,500 was able to rebound from a dreadful start in the new year, to come up with a strong run to the sixth place in what’s been a competitive playoff race where they only clenched it on the 79th MD. While they certainly had that forgetful month of April where they came out slow-footed against Kingston and flat-out dreadful versus CSKA, they are expected to start the playoffs in a different mode with their team captain Brianna Azevedos back on their roster.

5. God Save the Queen! Long Live the Queen! - With Jacques IX now happily reunited with his late father and grandparents and Queen Christine II now the Quebecois monarch, there is much anticipation around the hockey world about what this will likely mean for the hockey world. We all know that the late Jacques IX was much more versed with his love for football and of course, sports of his adolescence like sailing and handball, but the Queen and the incoming Prince consort are known for their particular love of hockey. Obviously the Queen has shown greater interest in promoting interest in domestic hockey across the Sporting Multiverse and realms beyond the three regions of AO, Rushmore and Esportiva, and her interest could prove to be particularly helpful as Hockey Quebec plans to launch a couple of major invitational tournaments for the evenly-minded hockey nations.

6. Where should HMY land? - Henri-Michel Yi, also nicknamed HMY as the acronym to Her Majesty’s Yacht, looks to be one helluva bad man. And it’s not like there’s even a slight debate over who will be his challenger to the draft or whether he’s worth being the first pick in the 2044 QHL draft - there is no question he will be selected as the first overall pick come this July. Of course, the draft lottery for first three picks exists for the non-playoff teams during the playoffs, and that adds to the level of complication for the players and their blueprints. There is a certain possibility that some will place the hard-hitting, explosive defenceman on the top pairing, but others may use the opportunity to trade for an elite player and a couple of picks.

‘Yi is one of those players who may be better off in some teams over others, think about it like that,’ said Sir. Alexandre Browne-Hahm, his coach at the major junior team Cornwall Cavaliers. ‘And that’s not up to me to control as his coach. I intend to focus on him improving his defensive and leadership skills, not so much on tampering his pro chances. You just gotta roll the dice at some point if you are a General Manager.’ This is an interesting point, especially given that he’s partly looking into the looking glass of a general manager. There have been rumours of him coming to Kingston Knights as their next head coach after all. Still, the Knights finished too high and are expecting to win a Prenneau Cup come this fall, so perhaps that’s not what’s on his mind right now…

7. Goalie Controversy froze Labrador City’s Hopes and Dreams - Speaking of a goaltender, we should take a look at Labrador City Freeze. This is a team where scoring was lacking on all fronts, but allowing 244 goals with their defence was quite criminal. Frankly, the organisation didn’t have a particularly high expectation to start with, and if anything, they were looking forward to land another top 10 pick in hopes they could land a top winger. Still, this level of goaltending, committed in a quartet of Josephine Koo, rookie Emma Plotnikoff, trade acquisition Sergei Averbuch, and Antoine Giroud-Bouchard all having an off cycle, was heavily criticised all season by the Labradorian media and the local fans and their front office is under great pressure because of it. Fortunately, the GM-HC tandem of Park Joon-Tae and Darian Leblanc know they have a year or two left before a decision is made over their contracts. As a result, they are more likely than not to pull a trigger to sign. It remains to be seen on what will happen, but expect something to happen either way. That’s for sure.

8. Still, play safe: Usually, hockey arenas are very safe for those who watch or follow the game, especially given the level of technological developments that have enabled a much safer playing environment for players and audience of now, compared to how it were just a decade or two ago. Still, much caution is to be given as various sets of nasty viruses sweep across the Multiverse, from nearby countries on the other side of AO to some random corner of the Multiverse. As a result, the QHL is going to remain vigilant and prepared in case of such scenarios with their updated regulation ahead of the playoffs - expect more frequent checkups on the athletes’ and their staff’s medical conditions, as well as the avoidance of unsanitary food or alcohol consumption products, for obvious reasons.

The First Hockey Nations League
Results

Procedural notes
  • All entries sent for their submission, five in number, have been approved.
  • The entry from Donnacona were accepted, as their entry submission and commitment to the initial cycle of the tournament predates their temporary closure to international sporting participation, without any note of withdrawal. The Hockey Nations League gently reminds representatives of Hockey Donnacona that they are welcome to come back and send their submission for future cycles when their media blockade is over.
  • Quebecois finalist Kingston Knights (QUE) has been included in the draw as a privilege to host nations, who are allowed to submit two teams on the cycle they host Hockey Nations League. This applies for future hosts of the HNL as well.

Final site selection
After an hour of discussions involving cookies, Hockey Nations League Committee unanimously agreed in 7-0 that the CSKA Arena in Quebec City, Royal Kingdom of Quebec, will host the Hockey Nations' League. They have also decided that the committee members will take the entire evening off to relax and rest, before returning to decide on the final site for the Coupe Jacques IX.

Coupe Jacques IX, First Edition
Results

Procedural notes
  • The national teams of the 7 founding members of the Hockey Nations' League participated in the inaugural edition of the tournament
  • The entry of Donnacona was accepted, as it was in the HNL club tournament, due to the integral role Hockey Donnacona played in establishing the tournament. While the nation has, for now, withdrawn from the international scene, we will eagerly welcome them back as soon as the time is right.
  • The tournament was scored using the latest World Cup of Hockey rankings, as of the end of World Cup of Hockey 39.

Host Site Selection

When Hockey Siovanija & Teusland were awarded the hosting rights for the Coupe Jacques IX, officials reviewed the prior host city bids that had come from cities in the country for the World Junior Hockey Championship. Bids from across the country were considered, and in the end, the bid from Borograd and Chernovets won. As a result, the Coupe Jacques IX will be hosted at the Olimpski-Ledarena (22,000) in Borograd, Siovanija and the Energija-Arena (20,000) in Chernovets, Siovanija.

It was always going to be an exciting tournament, with 3 of the top 10 hockey teams in the world competing. In the end, the final came down to world #1 Neu Engollon against world #5 Siovanija & Teusland, who faced each other early in the group stage and could not be separated in a 1-1 draw. In the final, however, it was the home team who prevailed, Siovanija & Teusland capturing the first Coupe Jacques IX title in an exciting 5-4 victory. Now, each of the participating nations looks forward to the World Cup of Hockey, and the next edition of the Coupe Jacques IX.

RP Cutoff for the second cycle of the Hockey Nations League and Coupe Jacques IX will be Monday, 5th of July, 2021 at 23:59 EST (Montreal-Boston time).

This is the cutoff for the second editions of Hockey Nations League (hockey club invitational tournament, preferably intended for the previous season's association champions), and Coupe Jacques IX (hockey national team invitational tournament).

For Coupe Jacques IX, all active or invited members, at the time of each and every cycle cutoff, will have their members counted.

As for Nations' League, all league entries posted by either its active or invited members will be counted, as long as the league results came from the latest cycle of the very associational league with some degree of RP. It is perfectly fine to repost said results into Hockey Domestic Thread for HCL submissions as well.

The membership for the privilege of participation in both tournaments are by invitation-only. The nations listed right below, whether by their role in original founding of the competition or via invitation, are allowed to post their entries at any cycle.

Eligible Members, Cycle 2:
Banija
Cassadaigua
Gyatso-Kai
Ko-oren
Quebec and Shingoryeo
Savojarna
Siovanija and Teusland

Inactive Members, Eligible for entry submissions, Cycle 2:
Donnacona (Cycle 1 Member, Eligible)
Neu Engollon (Cycle 1 Member, Eligible)

Hosts, Cycle 2: Siovanija and Teusland (Hockey Nations League), Quebec and Shingoryeo (Coupe Jacques IX)
