About
The GU is one of the many sovereign nations of the great sport-loving region of Esportiva, and have recently found out their lineage from the erstwhile Gloriax. The Grearish Union Cricket Team, fondly called the Black Dolphins, is made up of players from local club sides that play at the national venues designated for cricket, as well as in the heaths that surrond the major cities, selected in accordance to the rules of Cricket Grearia and the national contract system applicable for every sport. The board hereby releases the list of players selected to represent the Union in the inaugural GCF World Trophy to be held in Liventia.

The Liventian Cricketing Board of Authority have announced its 15-man squad of players for the first ODI World Trophy on home soil. The top line is the announcement of Matthew Geach as the full-time limited-overs national coach. This tournament will mark Liventia's first official ODIs since the last Pentangular Trophy, when Geach was captain of the side.

Dave Edwards, the former Test captain and current T20 vice-captain, has been appointed to the captaincy for the ODI team, becoming the third Liventian ODI captain after Max Finney and Geach. He will be assisted by Ruairidh MacMaster.

Dylan Hennessey, now 37 and no longer in the Test team, makes his ODI return 12 years after that last Pentangular Trophy. It is likely to be his final international tournament. Mike Sarrin, who was dropped from the Test side, returns as the main wicketkeeper, with Brendon du Pont serving as backup. There is no room for JJ Martínez-Jones or Gabe Lloyd-Blackburn, two newcomers to the Test team.

Test captain Matt Goudreau will serve only as a reserve spinner for the ODI side.

As Liventia are hosts, the CBA have decided to name a small 15-man squad, with the ability to call players up at short notice as may be required for injury cover or otherwise.

Head coach/fast bowling coach: Matthew Geach
Assistant coach: Max Finney
Batting coach: Leo Cartwright
Lead spin bowling coach/assistant fielding coach: Daniel Quinn
Assistant spin bowling coach: Leroy Bérard
Wicketkeeping/Lead fielding coach: Garland Goudreau

Liventia will make use of their single DRS review only in the following circumstances:
- If it is an obvious error by the on-field umpire; or if it is not, the following apply:
- If the batsman involved has scored at least 50; or
- There are fewer than ten overs left; or
- If that batsman involved is a recognised batsman and only the tail (de Cerci/Huws) are left.

Oliver Harvey (Ollie) OH Kerr 36 LEFT BAT ALL-ROUNDER/LEFT ARM MEDIUM-FAST (LMF)

Cricket has taken a bit of a back seat when it comes to the popularity of sports in Ethane. Mismanagement by the National Cricket Board (ENCB) and the clubs have led to a steep decline in ratings on television, as well as attendance at games. This has also hit the interest in the national team, with people switching to other sports, such as football and baseball. Football doesn't matter too much to the ENCB, but it is the growing popularity of baseball that concerns the ENCB the most, due to the sometimes perceived similarities between the games. However, the ENCB and cricketing bodies around the country are not giving up yet, and fighting to maintain the popularity of cricket in Ethane at the club and international level. Thus, with some support from the government as well, new funding has been pumped into the sport to revitalise it. This means bringing in the big names into the fold, batters and bowlers from Ethanian past who have constantly appeared on the international stage but have never made their mark.

The ENCB and the players are hoping that they'll have what it takes to make a deep run into this tournament, and establish the Ethanian team as a significant feature of international cricket. It won't come easily to this team, especially considering many of the players are ill-suited to the ODI length, instead focusing on either Test or Twenty20. Yet, the team is determined to make their mark. It'll be tough to compete at such a high level, but they have experience internationally and a determination to succeed. The question is whether the coach is going to be able to coax the best out of this team.

The night before Samrakstivu's opening round ODI against Drew Durrnil, the team huddled together in one hotel room and planned to watch The Tapes, old VHS recordings of Season 2 of the GCF Test Series. They wanted information about their first opponents, and about Liventia. The Tapes, of course, do not feature Drew Durrnil, who are also making their GCF cricket debut, but they didn't know that going in and they did not learn anything on this day, as the hotel room did not have access to a VCR.

"Only The Tapes can inform our strategy" said Padma Mazhavaraayar to the room, anxiously, but she was incorrect. Of course, trust in the Kāppāḷar and the "Iṟaiyāṇmai" way of life will guide the team's strategy towards that which will best honour the Kāppāḷar, and she was reminded of this. Indeed, it was true- as once the two teams were brought out at the shamefully small Fray Common Green the Samraks proved the dominance of the "Iṟaiyāṇmai" way of life, with Johnnyhallyday earning a hat trick in her first ever international after retiring three consecutive Drew Durrnil batspeople. The Drew Durrnil bats were simply unable to keep up with the power and wits of the Samrak team.

We are uncertain whom the Samrak team will be facing in their next group match- the information seems to have not been transmitted in a way that the Samrakstivu Cricket Board has understood, but that is of course irrelevant. The opponent, unless they are in service of the Kāppāḷar are not unlikely a fly to be shooed away with our powerful bats and bowling.

Abdul Khader, Rocket Scientist by Profession, and captain of the Amateur Subramani Cricket Team is a worried man. His team lost their first match by 41 runs, and they have only 5 more Group matches left to prove some thing. He knows, that they need to win at least 4 of the 5 for the team to have a chance of moving to play off rounds.

With Abdul losing their toss on a batting paradise, and two of the key bowlers (Mongal Khan and Shakser Poet) having off days, and then the top order batsman Tagore taking his own sweet time for completing his century, not worrying about his team losing, Abdul has lot to worry before the next match. He needs to have a word or two with Tagore, about increasing the aggressiveness of his batting, while chasing big targets.

They need to prove something in this tournament, so that they can get further funding, and take his team to greater heights. Otherwise he knows the cricketing history of Subramani will be a very short lived one.

Pearl Bay, Martune, Capitol Square
A large crowd has gathered to watch His Majesty's National Cricket Team compete in their first ever international cricket match. The mob is poised to witness a great moment in Martune's history, or a terrible deflating stain in the minds of citizens across the nation.

The Nerdania side begins and a deafening silence fell upon the crowd as Leon Holland delivered the first ball. Crack! A booming whack of the ball sends it over the boundary for six. Anyone viewing the broadcast could feel the intense devastation Leon felt in that moment. His face contorting at the idea of his first international bowl going for six the other way. But, he trudged on, finishing the over at 10 runs given up. After this point, most people assume Martune would falter in its maiden match. What hope was the fledgling club clinging on to at that point.

It was the captain: Eduard Gardener

When he wasn't busy busting his tail on the pitch, he was rallying his eleven. Compliments, consolations, advice. This man loved this sport and he had begun to love this squad just as much. He'd known these players from the MPCL and had a special bond with them. He wasn't just going to stand by and watch his men crumble under pressure. He wanted the win and so did his teammates. They all just needed some inspiration.

246. 246. 246. That was the magic number. All they needed was 246 runs to win their first ever international match.

Voice of Jerry Bloom-National Treasure and Famous Sports Commentator
"It's getting late and we're two overs off from the final score of this match.
Gardener the striker, Holland the non.
The crowd is electric here as the Martune squad are at 240, down 5 for tie and needing one after that to take it.
Gardener is poised in front of the wicket as he await the first delivery from the opposing side.
Here it comes...he pulls it fairly far across the pitch!
The ball is being chased down and is retrieved and hastily thrown back to the wicket.
Both batsmen make it back in time and the skipper secures two for his team.
What a night! The energy is pulsating...I can feel it in here [the booth]!
The captain readies up, the crowd is deafening, the bowler stares him down.
Here comes the delivery...A DRIVE. IT BOUNCES OFF THE PITCH.
IT IS BEING TRACKED DOWN BUT THEY WON'T MAKE IT IN TIME. YES!!!!! GARDENER GOES FOR THE BOUNDARY AND WINS THE GAME!!!

You guys have have all done well for this match.
As the sun sets on Dawson Ground, the team gathers at the Team camp. They had lost by one run. The team is still hopeful, knowing that this was their maiden match. They had played well. Vying with Wasinor for every point, chasing the win. The loss has been unfortunate, but even the fans will know that The Jovannic will have a fighting chance. As they head off to rest, they know one thing. That they will not fall easily.

Sale goes out for a night walk. He wonders. Had there been hope of a Jovannic Victory? He had played horribly that game, maybe the only one where the Jovannic Fans did not cheer their hardest. He waves his head in disgust. He must be optimistic. He can do well. They can win.

A Jovannic Fan Screams his support for the team. Yes! No! What are you doing? He tries to somehow push his aura of support to the team. Unfortunately, the team had lost. A giant groan ripples through the stadium, interjected by some cheers by the opposite side. However, He knows that the groans are temporary, and we will have confidence that Cheers shall ring tomorrow.
ALL HAIL THE JOVANNIC!!!

After international T20s and Test cricket were added to the calendar, it was time for ODI. The Dragonflies have minimal international experience with the format, only tacking on a few matches after Tests versus Darmen and the Plough Islands. The results of which went largely forgotten to time, and the consequences of those matches did too. Anyway, with most established cricket nations having a domestic calendar consisting of three (or even four, with T10) formats, the GCF responded by finally adding an ODI tournament for us to do very well in but ultimately fall short.

Fourteen experienced nations have been set aside from twenty-four newer additions to world cricket, with Ko-oren in a group with Sajnur, Eastfield Lodge, Barunia, Damukuni, the Plough Islands, and Liventia. For immediate impact and historical value, of course, some of our biggest rivals are in our group. The other group, by the way, holds Mattijana, Elejamie, Darmen, Ethane, Lisander, Krytenia, and Teusland. Among the eighteen relative newcomers we find Northwest Kalactin, Jeckland, as well as some surprise candidates at the most recent Test cricket season, such as Sylestone and New Lunenburg.

In the group with the hosts, the Dragonflies will play their matches at Park Central Oval, one of the multiverse's places of pilgrimage for cricket, as well as at Folenisa Cricket Ground. The former should yield plenty of runs, the second is a decently balanced ground but supposedly with extra batting help for limited overs.

Barunia
The baby blues have chosen an 18-man squad, captained by batsman Ben Lockwood. Players to look out for are Christian, another batsman, as well as the bowling duo Schmidt and Starr. There are some well batting bowlers on the team, so even down to the last few wickets, Barunia could keep the scoreboard ticking. What might hurt the team is that they have few spinners, and none of them lefties. Fast bowling will be Barunia's only option with the occasional Adams/Underwood over.

Damukuni
They haven't released a squad yet, but hopefully will release more details soon.

Plough Islands
Our long rivalry with some cold, communist islands quite far away is about to have another chapter added. For those who remember the ODI series we've already played after our official Test series, there will be more of that. Hopefully it will feature us winning a little more. The Islands have a few players from their Test campaign, with names like Laing, Aliyev, Ashe, Lebed, Leggett, Salisbury and Weaver, along with limited over specialists. This'll be a good one - make sure to tune in. We know they've got a good all-round team, maybe challenged by the limited overs. At least, hopefully they will be confused by it a little bit.

BYE

Liventia
Every team has a different idea of a limited over squad. Actually, nobody can even reach consensus about the number of players on the squad - the hosts have opted for 15. Of course, they have an easier time than the rest calling up extra players. The team is a who's who of Test players, has-beens, and other famous names. All in all, the Liventians always have a top 3 squad regardless of who they select, an annoyingly good team that will test ours to the fullest. They have a bit of everything and will punish any team that isn't prepared 100% for them - and now they have a home advantage, too. Great.

Sajnur
Not much information is out on our final two opponents, but knowing them, Sajnur will have a team with a few standout players and many decent players that should have a role in most international squads. Their team is a lot like ours, teams where not everyone will have a great day all the time.

Eastfield Lodge
Aiming for a comeback after their dramatic Test season, they're keeping the lid on information on their team until the time is ripe.

Barunia 5/283 in 50
Ko-oren 6/319 in 50

Ko-oren: Shapter, Twaddle, White, Commins, Willis, Hellver, Darknoll, Whitley, Lincoln, Marsden, Fox
Barunia: Lockwood, Bradbury, Christian, Horton, Pope, Johnson, Cortez, Starr, Delacroix, Schmidt, Adams

Shapter opened, his first outing in over a year appearing in green and blue, alongside Twaddle who hasn't done anything other than that for the last season and a half. A lot of expectations, and by extension, pressure, lies on Twaddle, just 23 years of age but still a remarkable rise in status. Barunia came out with all guns blazing, launching all kinds of seam at the young openers. Whatever it was, it had to be fast, and varied in line, length, and the occasional swing. Beating the ball into something more usable, the Shapter and Twaddle kept themselves safe during the first five overs, but now came the time to start thinking of how long 50 overs really were and what was needed to get a decent total. Slowly, the duo started hitting back, attempting safe, yet really good shots to get the ball through the outfield. Slowly but surely, the run rate rose, the rope was hit a few times, and the bowling became a little more unsteady and inaccurate. In came Schmidt, Starr, to give a bit of rest to their colleagues and to give Twaddle something new to think of. Shapter was stumped out hoping to nip a yorker in the bud, advancing way too far down the pitch. White was out in a second, and now Commins was there to make his debut. Twaddle was fast advancing through the thirties and fourties, with Commins there to sit through the harder overs and defuse a few situations, getting Twaddle back to bat as much as possible. Twaddle hit the fifty soon enough. Commins did his best to stay in, if only to annoy the fielding into having to adjust for a right, then left-handed batsman all the time. There were gaps - but then Twaddle bit off too much, lofted a drive, and was caught out by the bowler. Commins and Willis were the last true batsmen out there, taking the team from 85 to 200 in a more than successful debut for Commins. He never did get his century - instead, Willis scored 130 and saw Commins out. Delacroix bowled throughout this bit, did as much as he could to keep the runs low, but still surrendered a boundary or so per over - and whoever took over in the even overs often leaked even more runs. Barunia slowly shifted from keeping runs low to taking wickets again, eliciting ambitious sweeps and such from 21-year-old Commins, until he surrendered a top edge to Johnson. Willis then took Hellver and Darknoll through the last few overs, making the fielders run to keep balls from touching the rope, while doing very little work himself.

Barunia started off by looking at the 320 runs needed, six-and-a-half runs needed per over, and put Lockwood in a position to be successful for a long time. Their XI meant that there were quite a few non-batsmen towards the end, so the focus was to get the bulk of runs with the top 5-6 players. Marsden, meanwhile, decided to keep runs as low as possible, getting his fielders as far towards the outfield as allowed during the powerplay, and getting the bowlers to reduce risk and force the batsmen to choose a side to bat to just from the bowling alone. Lots of bouncers towards leg side and any length outside off. This did give Lockwood a few easy runs, deflecting the ball away from leg side enough outside Hellver's reach for a few boundaries - so Marsden adjusted the field again. The cat-and-mouse game continued, as Bradbury, and later Horton and Pope went for extremely low totals. Lockwood (whose wicket fell somewhere between Bradbury's and Horton's) and Christian were a different beast, amassing 150 runs between the two often for Barunia's cause. Christian's 91 not out was the team's best, but as the 50th over drew nearer, the team knew they were too far off to do damage.

Other Results
- In Group A, the Plough Islands already got in extra batting practice, playing 52 overs against Damukuni. A 231-all tie necessitated not one, but two Super Overs. The first ended 7-7, then the Foxes won it by scoring another 7 runs to Damukuni's 5.
- In Group B, Krytenia only managed 188 chasing Darmen's 216 (all out). Also a feature of many domestic matches, the second team knows what it's supposed to do but still hilariously comes up short every now and again. Reminiscent of plenty Mawryshire matches if they're batting second.
- Also in Group B, Ethane and Lisander managed the combined highest score of the matchday, 341 versus 323. Great chase, close match, but most of all, what were the bowlers thinking?
- In Group C, the highest target of the day was set by Baggieland (348). Not entirely surprising, their opponent couldn't match that score. By over 200 runs.
- Also in Group C, probably the closest match of the day belonged to Kriegiersien and Sylestone, ending at 4 runs apart with both teams at exactly 50 overs faced.
- Group D has Northwest Kalactin trying to prove they're too big for the 'lower' groups, and defeated Bolgano handily. Group E's New Lunenburg had no trouble with Notun Ahom as well, winning by a single wicket but with 13 overs and a few balls in hand - usually, teams would plan that the other way around.
- Group F was home to the third and second easiest chases of the day, with the Grearish Union and Waisnor getting rid of their opponents after just 35 overs and a bit. The easiest chase came from the Booter, 176 runs scored at 27.2 overs (Jeckland posting 5/172 in 50).

CRICKET DE BONDSAARI
The Sarian Cricket Team

i. Overview

Cricket ranks as the most popular sport in The Sarian in terms of both participation rates and attendance, which makes it all the more remarkable that this is their international debut. Only played in the short Saari summer, six clubs take part across in three leagues covering three forms of the game - First Class games played over four days - traditionally Monday to Thursday, a 40 overs one-day game played on a Saturday, and a T20 match played under floodlights in the evening. In addition to the six professional club sides, there is a league played between the top Saari universities and a strong local club cricket culture. That said, there is a general acceptance that Saari cricket - which has only become fully professional within the last decade - has a long way to go in order to meet international standards. It could be a baptism of fire for the fifteen players flying to Liventia, but they're more than up for the challenge.

Mattijana Set to Start ODI Trophy Campaign as Controversies Brew

MFO SPORT

Jonas Agnitz, MFO Krikete Correspondant

The eve of Mattijana's ODI trophy opener against Elejamie is a hugely exciting one. At last an international 50-over tournament has made it's way into the Cricket schedule with a number of nations celebrating it's involvement greatest. The Marmots are among those - one day Cricket being the preferred format for Mattijanan fans - and they will consider themselves one of the favourites going into the tournament.

Mattias Karamov's side had a bye for the first round of fixtures, wetting the appetite even more for the team's first match against the Greenblacks, but also providing an opportunity to see how some of the other teams are shaping up in the early stages. Elejamie themselves suffered a fairly heavy loss against Teusland in their first match, being bowled out for 214 in response to a lofty target of 290 from the relative newcomers, so they will be keen to fight back in their second attempt to get points on the board.

I spoke to Karamov himself ahead of the game and he gave me the impression that he and the squad would be out there playing now if they could. He spoke of the intense preparation that has gone into the squad since the tournament was announced and seemed excited for the opportunity to as he put it, "go out and show the world what we can do."

More realistically, he also spoke of the challenges facing some of the team's less experienced players. The international retirements of Grigor Turnov and Matej Googlov mean that Johanna Murska and Jan Nortje get call-ups to their first international tournament. The traditionally spin-friendly pitches at the Bastion, one of the two grounds chosen to host group B, mean that their bowling may prove more integral to Mattijana's success than first thought for both middle-over containment and wicket-taking.
Nortje is more of the classic ODI containment bowler, his off-breaks well-trained to a tight line and length that makes him difficult to slog, but a little easier to accumulate against. Murska is the polar opposite, her leg spin offering variations that can totally bamboozle a batter and making her a real wicket-taking threat. The nature of her spin means she is more likely to get it wrong though, offsetting the ability to make breakthroughs with a tendency to be quite expensive. It will be interesting to see the approach batters take against them early on in the tournament.

24 year-old opener Dominik Vukjic is also an exciting prospect. More of a dasher than the traditional opening bat, he has got some big match-winning scores for Petrovijanka when he gets his eye in and is an absolutely brutal striker of the ball. Defending is not his forte and he does get his fair share of low scores, especially against a moving ball, but he should be a really entertaining player on some of the flatter surfaces in Liventia.

Of course there has already been a full round of matches already and it probably featured the closest game of the tournament. Damukuni and the Plough Islands, both experienced cricketing nations, both battled their way to 231 on a fairly sticky wicket in Folenisa meaning a super over would be needed to split the two. Ties in cricket are remarkably rare occurrences after 50 overs, but these two went one further, both scoring 7 in the first super over. The Plough Islands eventually won through persistence, scoring 7 in their second super over and restricting Damukuni to just 5 run of their own.
A positive step from the GCF means that Damukuni still get a point for the tie despite their dramatic loss, something that may come in handy when it comes to getting through to the second stage of the tournament.

Off-field incidents have also made headlines before a ball was even bowled in anger. Northwest Kalactin's selection made waves after it was announced the team would not contain a number of players responsible for their win at the 10th World T20 due to their suspension over the overzealous way in which they celebrated. The announcement also stated that the Kalactin board of Cricket has all been 'fried', at first glance a massive overreaction to their inept performance, but knowing the track record of quality of English in the nation, probably just a misspelling of fired.
A desire to take a more measured interest in other forms of the game are a welcome change from the early commercialised slogfest of Northwest Kalactin's early involvement in Cricket and will hopefully help grow the game within the country. Whether the change of approach will hinder their progress on the pitch is another matter. The new board has selected a defensive team in complete contrast to the T20 side and despite an early victory against a very weak Bolgano, the team set up does not look well-adapted to the demands of the modern one-day game. The batting lineup looks fairly stodgy and the bowling attack lacks any sort of raw pace.

Elsewhere, new nation Samrakstivu has earned the ridicule of many international fans with its request to have its matches moved from the smaller stadiums being used for the associate nations to the large Park Central Oval. Samrakstivu justified the request by saying that the move would allow them to honour their 'Kāppāḷar' - a suspiciously dictator-like figure who rules the country with a significant cult of personality. The Samrakstivu Cricket Board also said that the ground was the only one they were familiar with through training, which apparently consisted of watching video footage of matches played there.
Despite variations in the pitch, a Cricket ground is a cricket ground and beyond the tickets allocated to Samrak fans, there is unlikely to be much interest from local and international fans for a match down in group E between nations that even diehard Cricket fans are unlikely to have heard of.
Still, the ambition is there from the Samrak team and even though the request is totally unreasonable, it is perhaps a sign of a genuine desire to have a Samrak side playing in the big matches in years to come.

For now though, the focus is on the Mattijanan team as they look to get their tournament off to the best possible start against Elejamie tomorrow. Coverage will be provided on MFO 1 and on MFO Radio 5 from 2pm Mattijanan time.
The socialist republic of Mattijana:
As if Austria, Slovenia, North-Eastern Europe and Sweden were merged together into some weird stew of a country.
through resilience, we are strong!

NEW LUNENBURG WIN OPENER AT ODI WORLD TROPHY

Image
NEVEREND, LIVENTIA - New Lunenburg's cricketers proved they had adjusted well to the one-day game after having recently played four test matches, speedily chasing a target of 279 to win in just 36.2 overs. Opponents Notun Ahom batted first, putting up 278/8 and making full use of their fifty overs. JPR Atkinson opened the bowling for New Lunenburg and continued his recent form, taking four wickets. After a shaky start, in which ODI openers David Klein and Jordan Humphreys were both dismissed for single figures, Rufus Webber made his mark, sending the first three balls he faced over the boundary rope. This was a sign of how the rest of the New Lunenburg innings was to continue, as Webber and the other batsmen took the liberty of trying to play every shot in the book (and many not in it!). Whilst this certainly made for an entertaining match and a great spectacle to watch, the New Lunenburg batsmen seemed to be rather oblivious of the value of their wicket and whilst it seemed near certain that they could reach the target set for them, it started to seem that they may be bowled out before reaching it towards the end of the match. Konstantin Schneider certainly seemed surprised to be marching out to the middle when the ninth wicket fell, but let his more experienced and skilled take the glory by playing like a nightwatchman in an ODI match! Wicket-keeper Andreas Hansen dealt Notun Ahom the final blow with a textbook example of a pull shot, which raced away for four and gave New Lunenburg a rather strange one-wicket victory. Captain Nathan Stainton remarked that his team ought to feel confident with their group, as they are shielded from many of the big boys of GCF cricket until the later stages of the tournament, but perhaps not so confident as they seemed to be on the ground earlier!

The Samrakstivu Cricket Board has acquired the VCR required to view The Tapes thanks to the glory of the Kāppāḷar, who guided our team fixers to an electronics shop in Orean, which also led to our bus going past the Park Central Oval. We requested the driver stop and let us off, and we were able to take a look at the stadium that we had seen from The Tapes. It was smaller and less intimidating in person- nothing like the glorious Nivositha Fountain of Youth Cricket Ground. We also noticed there was absolutely nothing there glorifying the Kāppāḷar, so we took it upon ourselves to hang up some fliers. We have heard that this sort of behaviour is strongly discouraged, but we trust in the Kāppāḷar to protect us when we do what is righteous.

Upon our return to the hotel, we plugged in our VCR and watched The Tapes and did not encounter the nation of Mattijana. When a dog poops where they are not supposed to, you rub their nose in it, or you hit them with a newspaper. Yippy ill-disciplined puppies are not welcome in Samrakstivu, and the Samrak people are unfamiliar with Mattijana as well. Perhaps a cricket power like Gruenberg, Akbarabad or Cotdelapoms could be critical of our abilities, but based on what The Tapes have shown us, Mattijana are not a famous cricket nation either. When we win this tournament we will humbly but firmly request that Mattijana renounce any disrespect intended towards the Kāppāḷar, who watches over the Samrak people.

In training today, after a viewing of The Tapes, specifically today match 160, Liventia in Sargossa, we worked on some masterful and innovative new bowling techniques. The batspeople of Notun Ahom can expect to be toyed with, as they've likely never seen anything like the slow seam bowling that Kaartikka Balasubramanian is learning after being blessed by the Kāppāḷar. To be blessed by her is of course like a perfect googly.

Men in uniform or pyjamas are sitting in comfortable chairs around spread tables in a pavilion.

Some are reading books or sleep, all are having big mustaches.
Two of them are sharing a table. One of them having the biggest amount of medals on his uniform, reading a newspaper. An Orc and a Zombiebutler serve them tea.

“Well, Pennywise, seems this jolly tournament has started.”
“Yes, Colonel, these Liventians have a hand in this marvelous sport and for organizing. Splendid.”
“Not like these Bigtopians in the Scorpionball World Cup.”
“A terrible sport anyway.”
“Indeed. No class.”
The Colonel tries to ignite a pipe, then pauses and puts the matches back.
"But some of the rules here are really questionable."

“Should we maybe prepare more for the match?”
“Oh, no, we don’t want to bee seen as to try hard, don’t we? This is a leisure sport for Gentlemen. Besides, for this young barbarians from Sylestone a mild work out will be enough.”
“I think so too, Sir. Haven’t we beaten them in the battle of… what was the name?”
“I think you mean the tribes on this isles near Blackacre. Who were defending themselves with Mangos. We charged them and defeated them in a glorious attack.”
“I remember, one of our greatest victories.”
“But that were other natives. I know it is hard to not be confused by all these names.”
“Why do we have to play in these low group C at all? Against all these weaker nations?”
“Well, it is a shame we have to acquire the respect first, but we are new to this international scene in Cricket. So we have to show them on the field what we are made of. As our great regiment did in battle once to rise to what we are today. I am sure we will prevail with ease. Mordbruck, tea please.”

The Orc servant approaches the two.
“Sirs. Opponent from Sylestone is awaiting you.”
“Oh, dear Violet. Well, then don’t let them wait any longer. Pennywise, you are our best batsman, show them what we are made of. But remember: Like Gentlemen.”

ODI World Trophy: A New Frontier for Sajnur

The inaugural ODI World Trophy has finally arrived in Liventia, and Sajnur has been privileged to not only be invited to the tournament, but also to be given a spot in Group A, one of the two groups for established cricketing nations where teams are guaranteed to have a second round of fixtures after the group stage. Twenty20 manager Doir Somaz has been handed control of the team for this brand new tournament, in the 50 over format where even experienced teams have little international experience, and Somaz has decided to go for almost exactly the same team that she brought to the T20 tournament here last year. Only one personnel change has been made from then, and that is replacement of Hassu Keruikje with young new batsman Solomon Tawas. The 23 year old left hander was a new face in Juri Zinfa's Test team, where he proved his value to Sajnuran cricket and cemented a spot in the international setup for some time to come, scoring a vital 78 to secure Sajnur's second ever Test victory, and against a highly regarded Plough Islands team. Tawas has been sent straight into the starting lineup, too, with all-rounder Kaori Jansa relegated to the bench.

The bedrock of the team will be the Test players, while the limited overs specialists will be looked for to provide explosiveness. Emre Vurda is the starting keeper once again, and is capable of both smacking balls for six and making block after block, while Elsa Cazla will be there to bamboozle opponent bats with her impressive variety of deliveries and Sirua will look to knock down all who dare get in their way and choke those who try to get cheap runs at the death. Of course, the Test players have explosive ability too, with Harry Kotte known to build runs quickly to make the middle overs easier, and Alan Tijer and Toljo Jorse scoring plenty of boundaries between them in the final overs. It will be Gabby Fiume, however, who will be the key to the batting lineup, as she will be the one expected to stay in through the middle overs and score fifties and centuries on which Vurda and co will build.

Darmen struggles to find One-day form in opening match
Wins anyways

DOVER, LIVENTIA - Darmen's first match of the inaugural Global Cricket Federation ODI World Trophy ended in victory, but the performance left much to be desired as the team failed to score runs or take wickets at the preferred rates. The Krytenian squad will have some aspects of their game to improve as well.

The pitch at the Bastion typically lends itself well to the talent's of the spinners and this match was no exception, as the four spinners of both teams combined for 13 of the 16 total wickets taken on the day. Brigham Hill led the way with a five-for, but ended up on the wrong side of victory; while Dorian Myers took four wickets and had as many maidens.

Batting wise, the Darmeni team was led by its wicket-keeper, Adalfuns Armbruster, who claimed Player of the Match with a half-century 60 off 96. The Krytenian pair of Graham Monciestri and Barry Mahler combined for just under half of Krytenia's 188 toral runs; for Mahler this was a performance to remember as he stubbornly refused to give up his wicket and scored a decent total of runs along the way. Unfortunately for Krytenia and Mahler, Monciestri didn't score quickly enough and despite his 57 not out, Krytenia coming up 29 runs short of victory with four wickets still in hand.

Both teams lacked the one-day mindset needed to flourish in the one-day game: Theudofrid Milligan being too patient for Darmen as the number four batsman, scoring just 16 runs from 44 deliveries; while Krytenia lacked any sense of urgency in the dying overs of the game, instead appearing to prioritize the prevention of any more lost wickets. For Darmen, this left them in a dangerous position; having just 216 runs to defend on a pitch where efforts have been made to make it more friendly to batsmen. For Krytenia, this meant not capitalizing on that dangerous position Darmen found themselves in.

Both teams also lacked the foresight to involve the services of at least one more spinner. Krytenia did have the likes of Owen Yorke to call upon, but his name did not appear on the team sheet and he watched the match from the other side of the ropes. Darmen on the other hand has only brought along two spinners, putting it at a great disadvantage at least in the early stages of this present competition as a number of matches will be held at the Bastion. Darmen will need its fast bowlers to step up and deliver, even if conditions aren't exactly conducive to straight and fast deliveries.

Darmen's next opponent is a familiar foe: Teusland, with the match being held at the National Centre of Excellence Oval in City Centre. Just a few months ago in Ko-oren, Teusland defeated Darmen by 108 runs to claim its first championship title in Test cricket, denying Darmen its second. A mild desire for revenge — not a typical Darmeni feeling — will be on Darmen's minds as they prepare for the match and no changes to the Darmeni starting XI are expected to be made.

Mattijana, Elejamie, Ethane and Lisander all remain on Darmen's schedule for this first group stage. Darmen has history with the first two, touring Mattijana in the second most recent Test season and Elejamie in the most recent. The latter two nations might be familiar to Darmeni fans of other sports, but less so in cricket.

Darmen needs only to finish in the top four of the seven teams in Group B to advance to one of either Group G or H and put itself in a good position to advance straight to the Quarterfinals. If even the slightest bit of improvement is made following the first match and subsequently thereafter for each of the remaining matches, Darmen could very much be unstoppable on its way to winning the first official GCF ODI title.

Stars Fluff Lines On Opening Day
Angus Haggerston reports from Dover, Liventia

The Krytenian national team made their debut in the GCF ODI Trophy yesterday on a bright day in Dover. Any hope of a winning start, however, was scotched by a pedestrian run chase that saw the Stars fall well short of a gettable target.

With hindsight, the toss was crucial. On a pitch that was always going to favour spinners late on, Darmen won the toss and elected to bat. Never ones to bow down to the script, though, Krytenia started things off with an early wicket, Vinnie Acker managing just fourteen before feathering a Brigham Hill delivery down the throat of Vernon Fulmer in the gully.

The early wicket, though a shock to the system for the men in green, served mainly to steel their resolve. A fine partnership for Sigmund Winter and Winston van der Zee followed, with the Hendricks batsman particularly enjoying a game of Whack-A-Mole with the Stars' spin bowling. That swashbuckling was to be his downfall; a useful innings was bought to a close when he dropped a high one into the hands of Ryan Watling. Two balls later, Winter was gone too, a swing and a miss on a tempting de Tong arm ball leading to the umpire raising the single finger of doom.

For a time, it appeared the player doing the most to give the Stars victory was Darmeni batsman Theudofrid Milligan. His sixteen runs took a painful forty-four balls, a premonition of what was to come later. At the opposite end, Ellar Ready and Domenic Gardenar both threatened to put on a show before losing their wickets cheaply; Ready, especially, will be disappointed, flailing at the wide stuff and rightly punished with a Tatton slip catch.

It could have been an embarrassment for the men in green, but step forward wicket-keeper Adalfuns Armbruster. A virtuoso half-century steadied the ship; indeed, the only thing that stopped him scoring more was a lack of partners as Krytenia's spinners tore into the tail. Brigham Hill will be especially proud of his achievements, with figures of 5-47, as Krytenia prepared to chase a tantalising target of 216.

Krytenia's reply started at a fair old clip, with both Sheldon Schneller and Howard Tatton finding early boundaries. Crucially, though, they couldn't keep their wickets. Schneller was foxed by the swirl and twirl of wily old Dorian Myers - he wouldn't be the last - and Tatton skied one to deep backward square. Vernon Fulmer was the next to be mesmerised by Myers, and that brought in the glacial Graham Monciestri. The Twain Valley man played as if this was a provincial four-dayer, and as the innings progressed, captain Lynton Saxon fumed as the required run rate went up...and up...and up.

Ryan Watling, Brad Grafton, and the skipper all tried to speed things up - all failed dismally - and when Brian Mahler took the crease the game was as good as won as the Stars went back into their shells. In the end, what should have been a triumphant day for Hill and Will de Tong ended up a game thrown away for a 28-run defeat.

There's no room for error now, with Ethane the Stars' next opponents. One hopes that a sense of urgency can be instilled in the side in the meantime.

Media Centre, The Bastion Dover Cricket Ground

Teusland cricket team press liaison Leon Huber guided captain Konrad von Sauerland through a corridor towards the site of his post-match press conference.

“Alright Konrad, typical post-match press conference here, important win, all that stuff,” said Huber. A new hire, he couldn’t be more than a few years out of university.

“I’ve done it before, Leon, don’t worry,” replied the veteran with a slight grin. “It’s not a big deal.”

The door opened, and von Sauerland and Huber entered the crowded room. Von Sauerland was taken aback - there were far more press here than the Edelweiss captain was used to for a group stage match.

“What’s the event?” he quietly asked Huber as they sat down.

“You are, sir. Every major paper and sports outlet in Teusland is here - there’s massive interest in you guys now, ever since the test championship.”

Normally, when the Edelweiss travelled abroad, it was a mixture of foreign journalists and a few domestic outlets - the Stelburger Zeitung, of course, as well as RBC and RSN correspondents. There was, of course, a great deal of interest in the test championship - but for this many domestic reporters to be present was a first. It put a smile on Konrad von Sauerland’s face - when he’d accepted the TKV’s offer to be captain of this team a few years ago, a major personal goal was to raise the profile of the sport back home.

“Good evening, guys. Konrad’s here to take a few questions from you, but let’s make it quick - the team are leaving Dover tonight to head to City Centre and prepare for the Darmen match. Thanks.” With that, Huber handed the mic to the captain.

“Congrats on the win tonight, Konrad. Kaiserhaven Sentinel, first question, Silvester Basch had an excellent match today, didn’t he?”

“He did, yeah. Silvester’s an exceptional player, and that level of performance is something we’ve come to expect from him. 57 runs from him were absolutely key to our win today, and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do in the rest of the tournament.”

“August Tausche, on the other hand, wasn’t his usual self today - 16 runs for him before going down. Will you be looking for more out of him the rest of the way?”

“August would be the first to tell you it wasn’t his day today, and we’re all confident in him to put this one behind him and get going. I think for all of us it’s a bit of an adjustment, he might have been just a touch too patient for what’s needed here. We’re all confident he’ll be back at his best soon, though.”

“Konrad, question for you from the Stelburger Zeitung. The bowling attack was excellent today, it must be said - who did you think was the best of the bowlers in this performance?”

“Well, obviously myself! In all seriousness, though, I don’t want to single anyone out, but we all know how much Elias Lehner means to this team, and he obviously had an excellent day. Really, though, I thought it was important that we limited Elejamie and that’s exactly what we did to protect that lead.”

“Hi Konrad, Die Zeit here with a question. How good does it feel to finally get a win at the Bastion, knowing the trouble you’ve had here in tests?”

“Haha, I think everyone knows that we’ve struggled at this ground in the past. So to get a win here does feel good, yeah, but honestly, I don’t think we’re too worried about things like that. Really, wherever we play, we’re just focused on putting in an excellent effort and hoping to come away with the win.”

“Last question now Konrad, I’m here with RBC Sports. Next up for you guys are Darmen, who you obviously have some history with. How are you feeling going into this one?”

“Darmen are an excellent side, and we know how motivated they are going to be for this one. They are certainly one of the favourites in this tournament, and we’re going to have to be at our absolute best to compete. They would love to beat us, and we have to match them in that intensity. But we have a ton of respect for them, and it’s going to be a fun one to be a part of for sure.”

“Thanks guys, that’s all for now,” Huber said as the journalists filed out of the room.

“How’d I do?” asked von Sauerland with a grin.

“Perfectly fine, sir,” replied Huber - the young man was still a little star-struck around the team, von Sauerland could tell. The captain’s focus, however, had turned elsewhere - how to continue the great start to the World Trophy campaign in the second match against Darmen, in a match that would have huge implications in the group.

Ability to Upset

Image

OREAN, LIVENTIA: The ODI World Trophy came at a time when the Grearish are in a state of utter directionlessness. The recent battle of Eagle Hill and the discovery of the Elders left the country in a state of shock right after the end of the Baptism of Fire of football, where the Black Dolphins made their way into the quarter finals, only to lose to a formidable side from the Riennic Isles.

This raises the question as to how far the Black Dolphins can go in the cricket World Cup, and the optimism in the cricketing heaths around the country sings in unison about the ‘ability to upset.’ One simply can’t write this off, however, as a way of seeming optimistic, but one has to delve deeper into the deep-rooted cause of this bubbling enthusiasm about the Grearish cricket team led by the charismatic Potter who leads the attack from the batting perspective.

GCF Test 777
Match Report: Eastfield Lodge in The Grearish Union
Eastfield Lodge bat first
The Grearish Union 375 (127.1 overs), 197/6 (41.0 overs)
Eastfield Lodge 210 (58.0 overs), 361 (93.4 overs)
The Grearish Union win by 4 wickets
Series: Drawn 1–1 (1 drawn)

It all started with the aforementioned result back home in Southgate Park in sweet Plibury. The Grearish were written off for the rest of the series, after drawing the first match and getting handed a defeat at home in the other. This, however, didn’t stop them from going out into the field and giving their best. One could call this an effect of Potter’s never-say-die attitude, but others believe it’s just the Grearish blood that runs in the veins of all these youngsters. With a century and a half in the first innings and a half century in the second, Potter held together what was then deemed to be a rather shaky batting order and neutralised aggressive Eastfielder bowlers. As he stood on the popping crease for the last ball of the spinner’s over, Potter remained at an unbeaten 61, with the GU requiring 2 more to win the ordeal. One could hardly imagine the way he caressed the ball through the covers for four, that day. One could hardly believe what Grearia had pulled off, on their maiden international foray into cricket.

Things weren’t to change, though, as Potter aptly said, "This is the beginning of a long road, and we're packed for the journey." The youth began to dream with cricket for the first time in their entire lives, while the confusion about the true Grearish identity took the back seat for a second.

GCF World Trophy: Group F MD1
The Sarian bat first
The Grearish Union 228/6 (35.5 overs)
The Sarian 226/8 (50 overs)
The Grearish Union win by 4 wickets

Another 4-wicket victory, but this time, in the GCF World Trophy, that too, in their maiden limited-overs tournament. It wasn't the town of Plibury in homely Gloriax, but the oldest cricket stadium in Liventia, at Orean, far from home conditions. It is also worth noting that the squad from the test season remained unchanged, as the team management believed that in consultation with Potter, it was important to hold their own winning combination, come what may. This was more than just about winning. This was about the Grearish will to survive in this game long enough to be a power worth reckoning.

The foundations for the victory were laid out early by the Grearish bowlers, with left arm bowlers Mendes and Stalin opening the attack against the Sarian's national side. There wasn't an enormous amount of help from the surface, but it was 'enough', they believed, as the Sarian batting order was torn through but in short bursts. It was probably because of this weird inconsistency that the batting rhythm broke for the opposition, but the average Grearish fan doesn't complain. The irregular intervals of the fall of 2-3 wickets at time proved to be fatal for the Sarian as they bled wickets in short intervals to succumb to a total of 226 for 8. It must also be noted how economical the Grearish spinners proved to be, as they tightened the supply of token runs and dried up the rotation of strike. One could say that Sinatra and Downey finished them off via asphyxiation, but... The very thought is rather morbid.

The run chase proved to be a breeze, on the other hand, for Grearia as Potter cruised to a 83* but the other end kept throwing their wickets away at regular intervals. Nevertheless, a high run-rate, and the best of intent makes Cricket Grearia look forward into the realm of acheivements.

Beyond the group stage stand the feared top 14 in the world. On this side, stand you, me, Grearish cricket, and the Ability to Upset.

The Sarian versus Ricardos7qm: Three Takeaways

The top order needs to be better...

It happened again. Luuc Ouder had been at the crease for just twelve minutes when he was dismissed, adding a lowly three runs to The Sarian's total. This is the second time in the World Cup that the opening batsman has been dismissed in single digits and fans are already beginning to worry that the nerves are getting to the batsman. It was an easy dismissal - Ouder reacted late to a reverse swing, leaving the ball to ricochet off the side of his bat for an easy catch. His opening partner, Lucie Snaijer, was not much better. A fantastic run-scorer in her inaugural season at Ghoberg, she has struggled at the bowler-friendly Liventia National Centre of Excellence. Although getting an early boundary, she faced just thirteen balls before her dismissal - a catch on leg-side - for eighteen. Beau Bisschop, who rescued The Sarian's innings against The Grearish Union, nearly went for a ducky - but a good use of the Decision Review System overturned the original decision of LBW. It was a short mercy, however, as he was stumped out just three balls later - coming ludicrously far out of the crease in an attempt to drive the ball.

... Except Anders Ruitdekker

One man prevented The Sarian from collapsing entirely, and that was Ander Ruitdekker. After surviving a couple of overs of threatening spin, he settled into element and put in a match-winning performance. Hitting three sixes and six fours, Ruitdekker was eventually dismissed for an impressive seventy-nine. Most of those came in an impressive century-partnership with Jodi Zwarte. Both quick players, the pair expertly squeezed runs and maintained a high run-rate throughout their partnership. Sadly, this would also be the downfall for the pair - Ruitdekker being run out whilst pushing for a second run. Still, it was a great partnership which stabilized the side and allowed the order to stabilize.

Jon Sloote won the day

For a while, it looked like Ricardos7qm would sneak a victory - they had a high run-rate straight from the get-go and were hitting a fair number of boundaries. To compound the issue, Oli Abaal and Bilie Moeris's fast bowling - predicted before the game to be the difference - just wasn't hitting as was expected. Coming out of the first powerplay, the real-time predictors was giving Ricardos7qm a seventy-five percent chance of triumphing: and with a score of one-hundred and one for just one wicket, that was arguably conservative. But then Jon Sloote stepped up for his first over, bowling two maiden overs in quick succession. This took the wind out the Ricardos7qm batters, and the wickets were soon falling: Bilie Moeris got her first, before Sloote got two in one over. From then on, the writing was on the wall: Sloote got two more - and crucially kept the run rate down. The Sarian would win by thirty-two runs.

The Sarian 258/8 (50 overs)
Anders Ruitdekker 79 (99)

Ricardos7qm 226/6 (50 overs)
Jon Sloote 4/82

The Sarian won the toss and elected to bat
The Sarian win by 32 runs

Bowling Attack Puts Stars Back On Track
Angus Haggerston reports from Dover, Liventia

After the sputtering mess that was Krytenia's opener, hopes were tempered going into their second game against an Ethane side that looked dangerous with willow in hand. What transpired was a performance the men in sky blue can be rightfully proud of as they defeated their opponents by two wickets.

Ethane won the toss and sensibly decided to bat first. Their side was unchanged from the one that had defeated Lisander in their first match. Krytenia, meanwhile, decided to make two changes in light of the issues they'd had, with Ed Fenn replacing Graham Monciestri and Gavin Udall in for Barry Mahler.

The Ethane innings started off with a storm of runs, with Edmund Dammelhead and Damien Hannelten both finding gaps in Lynton Saxon's field and keeping the scoreboard ticking over nicely. Stuart Obermann, especially, was being punished all over the shop. A switch to spin, though, did the trick as the dangerous Dammelhead was removed shortly before his half century. To be fair to Dammelhead, he was unlucky, caught out by a straighter one from Brigham Hill which he could only drag onto his own stumps. Harry Rowell almost followed next ball, but his edged chop at Hill's delivery bounced just in front of Ryan Watling. Rowell would last a couple of extra overs before Will de Tong struck, trapping him LBW with fourteen runs to his name.

The batting side clearly needed someone to get the innings back on track. Enter Gary Umbridge, weathering the storm of spin to cause a rethink from the Krytenian captain. Saxon's answer was to put himself into the attack, preserving those precious overs of spin for later. At the opposite end, meanwhile, Udall would bowl his first overs of the competition. It was Saxon who made the breakthrough in the end, getting Hannelton to lollop one straight back down the track and remove himself to the pavilion. A tasty 61, though, was nothing to be sniffed at, and Sammy Elizabeth reminded the Krytenians that they had plenty of talent with the bat as he crunched Saxon's next delivery through the covers for a classy four.

It was now Krytenia's turn to spend time on the back foot. Saxon and Udall couldn't make inroads, and so the captain switched things up again, bringing Obermann in to partner Udall. Umbridge reacted to this change by thumping Obermann down the ground for six. Udall, though, wasn't going to go gently into the night, and a beautiful yorker saw Elizabeth caught up in his own feet and out leg before. Adam Loughton came in, but was never given the chance to settle; Udall smelled blood, and when the all-rounder nicked one behind a couple of overs later, it was probably a blessed relief.

Umbridge, though, was not to be denied his moment in the sun. Another classy clip took him to his hundred, and he was looking set and in with a chance of even more before calamity struck. Dancing forward to punish an Obermann delivery, he succeeded only in edging the ball inside, with Brad Grafton making an acrobatic catch to remove the dangerman for 102. Ali Farther followed soon after, caught LBW by a de Tong delivery as Saxon put his spinners back into play on a pitch that encouraged turn. Hill and de Tong then set about demolishing the tail, the last three wickets falling for 22 runs as Krytenia bowled out their opponents for the second time in as many games.

Krytenia's reply started in stark contrast to their pitiful display against Darmen. Clearly, there had been rockets placed under posteriors as Shelton Schneller and Howard Tatton looked to make quickfire scores. The Ethane bowling was knocked hither and yon in the opening overs as both men raced past thirty. As soon as it had begun, though, the onslaught hit the breaks. Schneller was the victim of a calamitous mix-up as Tatton went for a second run that just wasn't there, leaving his team-mate stranded at the wrong end for an easy run out. Tatton wasn't long after him, chasing a shot that wasn't there and producing a fine diving catch at cover from Umbridge.

Not to worry, though. Watling carried on where Schneller left off, and though Vernon Fulmer couldn't quite keep up with the scoring pace of his opposite number, he was still contributing useful runs. With the scoreboard ticking over nicely, once again the Stars looked settled; once again, a Krytenian batsman was the architect of his own downfall. This time it was Watling, who'd raced to an excellent forty before horrendously mistiming a Thomas Burns leg-break and watching in horror as the ball clattered into his stumps. This brought in Ed Fenn for his first serious action of the tournament, and he duly made his mark with a fine slash through square leg for four.

With early runs in the bank, now was the time to take stock and control the pace of the game. For Ethane, now was the time to really take advantage of the turning wicket. Burns had already made inroads with Watling's wicket, and it would be him again as the thorn in the side. Fenn was given out on just eleven, only to reprieve himself on review with the ball heading just past, rather than into, his off stump. Fulmer, however, would not be so lucky in the following over, caught absolutely plumb by a peach of a Jordan Lion delivery. Bradley Grafton then had a hairy moment as a nick to slip juggled out of Rowell's outstretched hand on two, but breathed a sigh of relief as the ball hit the grass before either Rowell or Loughton could grasp it.

Having got past his scare, Fenn was relishing the chance to express himself with some choice shots. Top of the class was an audacious uppercut that sailed way over Farther's head and over the fine leg boundary with Percy Keele a mere spectator in the outfield. At the other end, though, Burns was having some joy. Grafton went for seventeen playing one to gully, and captain Saxon was foxed by one that kept low and straight, toeing it onto his stumps. If anything, Fenn approached his fifty wondering if he'd have to save the match before he ran out of partners.

He needn't have worried. Gavin Udall wasn't planning on losing his wicket cheaply, and with a decent amount of overs left, took it on himself to count off Lion and Burns' overs. His strategy of simple shots and scrambled singles wasn't pretty or quick, but it was effective as the Stars rolled past 250. Sadly, though, Udall couldn't quite see it through with his fellow debutant, Sammy Elizabeth getting some swing in the cool late afternoon air to force the error from the Krytenian. At 269/7, this was still one that could go either way; that became 269/8 a couple of balls later as Obermann was beaten by another Elizabeth howitzer.

Brigham Hill had been a hero with the ball; now was the chance to be one with the bat. Alternatively, it was a chance to not get out and let the specialist batsman do the job. Hill chose the latter, blocking down rather than jabbing and prodding for big runs. Ed Fenn was not going to complain about that, and it seemed fitting that when the rinning runs came it was Fenn who got them, swishing a Keele delivery through the covers for the four runs needed for Krytenia to win the game.

The Stars switch over to the NCE Oval for their third match, facing a Lisander team with something to prove after a tough loss to Ethane that opened their campaign. Krytenia will, of course, be hoping to cememt their position as cyan meets teal with a much more staighforward route to the trophy potentially in the balance.
