[Tennis/NSTT] Outdoor Hard Court season 6 [RP/Results]

Postby Electrum » Thu Apr 16, 2020 3:53 am

NSTT Outdoor Hard Court Season 6 IC thread

The Nationstates Tennis Tour welcomes all tennis athletes to the official start of the outdoor hard court season after an extended period off. The Nationstates Tennis Tour, and its previous iteration, the Association of Tennis Professionals, has been running for six seasons.

With the most recent hiatus comes with a few new changes in how IC threads work. This thread will be the thread where roleplays and results will be posted for the first three tournaments of the year, collectively the outdoor hard court tournaments. These are, the Electrum Slam (Grand Slam) hosted in Centralis, Electrum, the Kinterten (Tier 1) hosted in Kannapolis, Kannap and the Steinigestrasse Open (Tier 2), hosted in Steinigestrasse, Gergary. This thread OP will contain general information about the timeline for the three tournaments, whereas the next three posts will contain specific information for each of the tournaments.

For specific information about each of the tournaments, including draws and schedules, please see the next three posts.

Scorination Details
All NSTT tournaments will be scorinated on xkoranate with advantage sets. Grand slam singles tournaments will be best of five sets, all other tournaments, including grand slam doubles tournaments will be best of three sets. The logarithm points will be used, so that the vast inequalities in total points don't mean predictable matches. Returning players will have their best result from previous NSTT seasons count for the first two tournaments they play in. To determine the seeding and points of doubles pairings, the average of the sum of the doubles players logarithmic rankings will be used. Draws for both the singles and doubles competition will follow the normal procedures undertaken by the ITF.

All roleplays are scored, with quality over quantity emphasized. Multiple roleplays submitted on the same day will be counted as one larger whole. All players without a ranking will have a skill level equal to the lowest main draw player's logarithmic points.

Where there are more entrants than available places, a knock-out qualification round is played.

At the conclusion of each tournament, rankings are updated to reflect the new points earned by players. These points last one year.

Many thanks to the Anditia for this logo

The Electrum Lawn Tennis Association formally invites 135 singles players and 66 doubles pairs from all around the multiverse to play on the hard courts of Centralis. The Centralis Tennis Park in Centralis will once again host the tournament with many outdoor hard courts and three roofed arenas. The Electrum Slam is a well attended tournament, where fans from across the multiverse are passionate about their favourite players.

IC information
OOC: This tournament is based off the Australian Open

Particulars
The three roofed arenas are, in decreasing size, Phillip Maxwell Arena (centre court), Janine Gredello Arena (show court 1) and the Peter Oaker Arena (show court 2). The atmosphere in Phillip Maxwell and Janine Gredello is more reserved, with crowds tending to cheer on seeded players that they recognise. Peter Oaker Arena, which is open to all with a ground pass, has a rowdier atmosphere, where underdogs and Electrumites receive their best support. Outside courts are well attended, with fans of all countries coming to Electrum to watch their favourite player in action.

Overall, the Electrum Slam is also known for its light blue courts which are quick hard courts is suited to nearly all styles of play. The Electrum Slam has historically the most amount of upsets -- there is speculation as to why this might be the case, experts tend to put it down to the compressed nature of the tournament which tires players playing in both singles and doubles, as well as the quick hard courts which favours risk-taking and aggression over defensive baseline play.

Accommodation and transportation to Electrum is provided free of charge with players staying at Lodge Centralis, a five star hotel-casino complex with spas, massage parlours, swimming pools, spas, etc. All players will receive a hundred synergies to use in the Lodge Casino as well for those who are in the mood for gambling. Room service operates 24 hours a day. Teams will be transported by a chauffeur daily in a private car to the Centralis Tennis Park at Centralis. Once the tournament is over, chauffeurs will bring you back to Centralis Airport for exit, with winners going in special limousines.

Electrum, the country
The currency is the Synergy, a card based currency which is entirely digitalised. Paper money, such as the Universal Standard Dollars is not widely accepted except in hotels and banks (even beggars have their own Synergy terminals), so it is recommended to get these cards which are very easily stolen but also incredibly convenient to use. In general, the laws of Electrum are relaxed, with restrictions on the most serious of crimes as well as bans on smoking in certain areas and banning of 'hard' drugs only.

Historical information of tennis in Electrum
Phillip Maxwell was the first president of the Electrum Lawn Tennis Association -- the organising body for Electrum's favourite pasttime. The Electrum Lawn Tennis Association has hosted tournaments such as the Hamilton International in Hamilton, and the Terranean Slam in Somer. This season, the ELTA has decided to promote the Hamilton International as a clay grand slam tennis event, while discontinuing the Somer event in the near future. There are talks that the ELTA will plan to rotate the clay court grand slam between Hamilton and Somer, whilst others say that the ELTA is looking to give up the rights for the clay court grand slam to another nation.

The Centralis Tennis Park was established in 1910 and originally consisted of grass courts. With the high cost of maintaining grass courts, the CTP changed to the current hard courts in 1931. There are 24 hard courts (which includes indoor practice courts), 3 of which are roofed. There are three courts named after significant tennis players, including Phillip Maxwell, Janine Gredello (mother of Sonya and former patron of the ELTA) and Peter Oaker (secured funding for the CTP and kickstarted the transition to hard court). All courts are fully televised. Tennis players are able to schedule and book practice courts at their leisure, but be warned, these courts are also open to public viewing as well. The Centralis Tennis Park was formerly named the National Tennis Centre, renamed to avoid confusion with the Cenian counterpart. The Centralis Tennis Park formerly had four roofed stadiums, but one was recently abolished (Show Court 3) to allow the expansion of the Peter Oaker Arena.

Other important tennis figures in Electrum include Harvey Regent and Alia Craft. Harvey Regent was, as some might say, the best Electrumite tennis players ever in Electrum's old domestic circuit. After passing away due to old age, the ELTA honoured his legacy by naming the perpetual singles trophy after him. Another distinguished player is Alia Craft, which is where the doubles trophy, the Alia Craft Memorial Trophy gets its name from. Alia Craft is a founding board member of the ELTA as well as distinguised former doubles player. Alia was an excellent player who fought for the rights for people of both genders to compete, as well as increasing the awareness and exposure of doubles tennis. Runners-up receive a miniature version of the trophies, whereas champions receive a full-sized replica.

The Electrum Slam also awards the Best Underdog Trophy. This trophy is given to the qualifier or wildcard which makes it the furthest into the competition. The trophies represent the improvements players make to their game in the pursuit of tennis excellence.

The Federal Republic of Gergary

Introduction

Gergary (alternate name: Deutschmagyarland) is an island-nation located in northern Esportiva. It is located south of Brenecia, west of Buyan, and east of Soltsteed. The capital city of Ingbert-Borbely is landlocked, and is the seat of government in the country. The nation is not known to be strong economically, however, they can be proud that they can produce their own goods and services, and rarely imports products from other countries. People living in Gergary are called Deutsch-magyar locally, or Gergarian abroad.

The nation is divided into three main regions. The western to south-western part of the region is called Strasseregion, mostly inhabited by Deutsch people. The most famous city in this region is Steinigestrasse, known for its tennis clubs, one for hardcourt and one for grass. This is also where the national football stadium is located. The second region, which encompasses the north to north-east of the nation, is the Nagy region, mostly inhabited by Magyar people. The famous city here is Pas, known by its strong indoor sports teams of ice hockey, volleyball, and basketball. Here you can locate the national arena used for all three indoor sports - the Gergary nemzeti arena. The last region is the Gemischtvegyes region, which consists of 55 percent Deutsch and 45 percent Magyar. This includes Ingbert-Borbely and the mostly known cities of Balogs, Szekely, and Wiesenblume. This region occupies the eastern to south-eastern part of the nation.

The national sport of Gergary is ice hockey, but the government, led by Chancellor Domonkos Virag, allots equal budgets to all their sports via the Deutschmagyarland Sportkomisssion (DMLSK). Ever time the Virag government increases their budget, other branches of sports can also benefit from the increase. The result? A nation which is probably jack of all trades, but mediocre in all of them.

The Steinigestrasse Tennis Club

The largest tennis club in Gergary, the Steinigestrasse Tennis Club, is home to the tennis division of Verein fuer Rasensport (VfR) Steinigestrasse. The club is proud of both its main divisions, the grasscourt team, and the hardcourt team. The club has eight grass courts, eight hard courts, and four enclosed courts, which can be setup both as a hard court or a grass court, depending on the needs of the organizers. For the Steinigestrasse Open, the hard court setup will be used, as this was already designated by the NSTT as a hard court tournament.

The qualifiers will make use of its four enclosed courts and four of its eight other courts, which the latter will have bleachers for the viewing needs of the spectators. The tournament proper, including the doubles, will make use only the four enclosed courts simultaneously. The largest of which, with capacity of 3,500 seated spectators, will host the semifinals and finals of the tournament.

There are also function rooms and transient houses near the courts that the participants can use, which all of those are air-conditioned and well-furnished for the comfort and convenience of the participants.

Transportation and Lodging

From the Ingbert-Borbely International Airport, buses will fetch the participants per delegation, and will be brought straight to the Club, where they may opt to stay in the transient houses. Other delegations may choose to rent a house or hotel rooms just near the facility. Each delegation will be provided with a shuttle van that can carry 10 to 14 passengers, for the duration of the tournament.

People and Laws

People in Gergary are normally warm towards tourists, and usually help them with directions or places to visit. Law enforcement is strictly imposed, and everyone is regulated to follow the rules. The government is strict with smoking, with only certain areas of the facility allow smoking. Use of recreational drugs is strictly prohibited, and may result to deportation if caught.

1. Niken Subdula: great backhand guy can get you with a dropshot.
2. Juan Subdula: the brother of Niken has the fastest serve in Kalactin.
3. Julia Devoningstan: only woman on the team, has a good forehand.
4. Luke Subdonez: good forehand and can send the opponent on the run with his serves.
5. Alan Sanchez: very tall, lengthy player with a good reach, fast serve.
6. Alex Rivera: strongest guy on the team, yet he still has trouble with speed.
7. Justin White: smaller, yet faster player. He can easily get to balls and has a great dropshot.
8. Joe Fernández: controls pace well and try’s to take command of the game.

Northwest Kalactin is a nation of 20 million people, the nation has many major city’s with hockey teams in them. The largest cities are Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour And Kempsey the capital and largest city in the nation is Gold Coast. The climate is hot with the summer temperatures getting up to about 110 Fahrenheit at the highest and winter temperatures go down to about 50 at the lowest. The nation plays host to many domestic sports leagues across many different sports including Hockey, Soccer, Basketball, Rugby and many more.

As the Kalactanian team gathered in a 4 star hotel in Electrum, no nonsense coach Jose Santiago brought them all into the eating area for a dinner. After the dinner the coach made a short speech to them.
“Congratulations to you all for making the roster for the Electrum open this year we are excited to have you here. Now a few ground rules for your time here In Electrum. No drinking, no smoking, no drugs, no racket throwing and most importantly no violating the 10 PM to 4 AM curfew, if any of you violate those rules you can see yourself sent home for the rest of the tournament. Alright, next order of business after this tournament each one of you will be going to either the Steinegestrasse Open or the Kinterten Open, your placing form the nationals last year will decide what tournament you will play in. Okay that wraps it up any questions?”
The team sat there silently as they waited for the coach to dismiss them to their rooms.
“Okay then I will see you on Sunday for the start of the tourney, get some sleep.”

ONE MORE MATCH BEFORE SLAM FOR WENTWORTH

Sofia Wentworth in Pre-Qualifiers:
2-1 v Anneliese Cardo (6-4, 3-6, 6-5)
2-1 v Ravena Hilmar (6-3, 1-6, 6-2)
2-0 v Luísa Gardner (6-2, 6-2)
Sofia Wentworth already had a hard way to reach Electrum Slam. She was one of the six female players who hadn't granted its spot by ranking, so she already needed to play three matches in a National Pre-Qualifier to reach the event. And as soon as she arrived Centralis, Electrum, she was informed that would need to play in another qualifier before joining the main tournament, due to her placement in the players' list sent by the Lisanderian Federation. She posted the following in her meep account earlier today, making fun of the "obnoxious" situation.

So, one more qualifier for me to face... This one because I was the last number of lisanderian list. Does it make sense? We're assigned by list position. I know this is beyond the tournament organization, but this method is obnoxious, I expected at least some drawing lots to define the Qualifiers. Well, nothing else can be done. Wake up earlier and turn on your TV on (RTV Sports 2 will broadcast it starting from 5am) to follow me and the rest of Lisanderian Tennis Players in Electrum Slam!

Last year:

The Ebola virus AAUGCC was floating through the bloodstream of a bat, minding its own business, when another virus bumped it. "Watch where you're going Corona-chan!" AAUGCC grumbled. It seemed like every day there were more and more coronaviruses floating around, and they never did anything except take up space and get in the way.

"Who are you calling Corona-chan?" the other virus said. "Do you think all coronaviruses are the same? How would you like it if I came floating up to you like, 'Hey Filo-chan'?"

AAUGCC poked the coronavirus to see what kind it was. "SARA?"

"It's SARS not SARA, and my name is GUACUU."

They were interrupted by an Ebola virus that was passing by: "Hey, AAUGCC! When are you going to give me some grandkids?"

"Argh! Not now, dad!" AAUGCC replied. "I'm talking to someone."

"That's not a cell, it's a coronavirus!" AAUGCC's parent scolded it. "You can't reproduce with another virus, and even if you could, your kids wouldn't be Ebola. I don't want you mixing your genes with SARS! Why don't you go find yourself a nice cell to infect?"

"We're not even mixing our genes, dad. We're just talking!"

"Yeah, well, you're not going to give me grandkids by talking!" The older Ebola virus bumped into another one of its offspring. "Hey, ACUGCC! When are you going to give me some grandkids?" And then it got distracted by a nice-looking cell and it was too busy attaching itself to the cell membrane to pay any attention to the other viruses.

"Real classy, dad," said AAUGCC. "Like anybody wants to watch that..."

The SARS virus GUACUU was still there, apparently because AAUGCC's tail was tangled in its spiky crown. AAUGCC needed to vent and he decided the SARS virus was as good a confidant as any. "My dad is so shallow. All he ever does is replicate and nag me to give him grandkids."

"He's a virus. That's what viruses do," GUACUU said.

"So why are you sitting here talking to me instead of replicating?"

"I dunno. I guess I'm just lazy."

"Okay, but don't you ever wonder if there's more to life that just floating around in the bloodstream of this bat and popping out more viruses?"

"Like what? You want to try jumping to a new host?"

"No, I mean have you ever thought there's more to life than just spreading your genes?" AAUGCC asked dreamily. "Like do you ever wonder if you could make something of yourself, if you could do something that people would remember besides flooding their lungs with goo?"

"People remember having their lungs flooded with goo," said the SARS virus. "They even put my cousin's picture on the news."

"Yeah, but do you ever wonder what it's like to get noticed in a good way?" said AAUGCC. "Like have you ever wondered what it's like to make a painting or compose a symphony?"

"I don't have ears. How am I supposed to compose a symphony when I can't hear the music?"

Just then another SARS virus floated by. "GUACUU, when are you going to give me some grandkids?"

"I'll have kids when I'm ready," GUACUU replied. "Thanks for asking."

"You have Ebola in your hair," the older SARS virus said disapprovingly, but before it could say anything else, it was knocked out of the way by a bacterium that seemed to be in a hurry to get somewhere.

"See, this is exactly what I was talking about," said AAUGCC. "Everyone just expects us to replicate, replicate, replicate, like that's the only thing we're good for."

"So what else are we supposed to be doing?"

"I dunno... I just feel like there should be more to life." They drifted through a blood vessel in the bat's eye just as it flew over a tennis court where some people were playing. "Like look at those people down there. They're having fun and they're not even having sex."

"So...what? You want to play tennis?"

"Well, why not?" AAUGCC said.

"Okay, you can do whatever you want, but I'm not volunteering to be used as a ball," said GUACUU -- who actually was about the right shape to be used as a ball if only AAUGCC could find a microscopic tennis racket and somewhere to play where they wouldn't be interrupted by bacteria, blood cells, and nagging parents.

"Oh, no, I wasn't going to do that," AAUGCC said.

They were interrupted once again: "AAUGCC, are you still talking to that SARS virus? When are you going to give me some grandkids?"

"You literally asked me that like 5 minutes ago!" AAUGCC complained.

"5 minutes is plenty of time to have kids!"

"Oh, my fucking GOD! I can't take any more of this! I have to get out of this bat!"

"Ohh, are you thinking about infecting a new host?" the older Ebola virus asked with a hint of pride.

"Yeah," AAUGCC said. "Me and SARA are going to infect a gorilla and teach it to play tennis."

"It's SARS not SARA, and my name is GUACUU," the SARS virus reminded it irritably. "It's rude to go around calling other viruses by their race instead of learning their names, like you can't tell one SARS virus from another. Do your friends just call you Ebola or do they use your name?"

"Hey, at least SARS is a cool name," said AAUGCC. "Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome sounds like one of those scary super-viruses out of a disaster movie. Ebola sounds like it ought to be a flower or something. They could have given us a cool name like Blood Fever or something, but nooooo..."

"Yeah, sure," said GUACUU. "SARS sounds cool until you misspell it. Then it's SARA the Virus, an educational bedtime story you can read to your child when he has a runny nose. I don't want to be an educational bedtime story! And what's this about infecting a gorilla?"

"Come on, it's a good plan," said AAUGCC. "Gorilla immune systems are crap, so we'll be able to move in and do whatever we want. We'll infect its brain cells and take control of its body, then we can start a gorilla tennis league. Or a band. Or a circus. Anything we want!"

"I'm a respiratory virus," said GUACUU. "I don't do brain cells."

"Yeah, but you can't control the body from the lungs," said AAUGCC. "If you want to take over your host's body, you have to get into the brain."

GUACUU was still skeptical. "I don't think we can actually do that."

"You can do anything if you put your mind to it!" said AAUGCC.

"We're viruses. We don't have minds."

"I think we're smarter than we give ourselves credit for," said AAUGCC. "I mean, look at us. We just had a whole conversation."

"Okay, but I don't want to infect a gorilla," said GUACUU. "Let me infect a cat or something and I'll give this a shot."

"Okay! Let's go find ourselves some new hosts and then we'll meet down there by that tree."

GUACUU drifted loose from AAUGCC's tail and they made their way to the wet lining on the inside of the bat's nose, where they waited for the right moment to float free on its breath and make the leap to their new hosts. The bat flew over an alley where a stray cat was rummaging through some trash, and GUACUU went sailing into the breeze. "I can't believe I'm doing this..."

Present day:

AAUGCC and GUACUU had gone through many adventures and multiple hosts before arriving in Electrum. AAUGCC found it exceedingly difficult to infect apes without making them deathly ill, and sad to say, it had gone through several. GUACUU had done less damage, but it had learned the hard way that alley cats could not hold a tennis racket properly, so it had moved from the alley cat to a tabby-striped anime cat-girl.

Thus far, their adventures had not gone smoothly. They had bumbled around in a stupor, tripping over their own feet, before they got the hang of operating their hosts' nervous systems. They had broken into buildings and stolen things before they learned how to earn money and go shopping. They had sickened innocent people and animals before they learned how to instill good manners in their children. (Since their hosts had many brain cells, AAUGCC and GUACUU had to make many copies of themselves in order to take command of the whole brain, and some of the copies were not well-behaved.) The viruses and/or their hosts were currently being stalked by a primatologist, a virologist, a plucky schoolgirl, a brooding purple-haired sorceror, and a busty woman with needlessly revealing robot armor.

...But the thing that annoyed GUACUU the most was that AAUGCC had misspelled its name as "SARA" on both their application to be recognized as a sovereign nation and their entry paperwork for the Electrum Slam.

The viruses were grateful to have transportation and lodging arranged for them. It meant fewer things they could mess up.

Trattoria Francesca
San Remo, Liguria
Neu Engollon

“Are you fucking kidding me?! Are you absolutely fucking with me!?” She tossed her glass back on the table and it tipped, spilling her cocktail all over the stained glass surface. She didn’t make a move at all to stop the small tragedy from happening.

“Marla! Calm down! It’s not that ba-”

“Don’t even fucking tell me that! It’s bad. That fucker is a full on fucking Nazi. Any dipshit who watches the news knows he is being investigated for ties to right wing reactionary groups. Every action that he did, every legislation he tried to pass...It hurt people! It really put the hurt on people that were depending on him…”

“Politics aside…” The NETC official waved. It was Franklin Badon. They hadn't often dealt with Frankie during their active membership in the NETC, but had known him from reputation. He’d come up from more of a behind the scenes guy over the years to a more visible position dealing with the public and fellow athletics officials.

“There’s no aside to this, Frankie. This isn’t politics, this is human compassion. He manipulated himself into office, or had his handlers do it...Whatever...And he systematically tried to turn Albertville into a little den of fascists. He victimized the very idiots who helped put him into office. Those purple hat wearing fuckwits…”

“Calm. Down.” Rittenhaus slapped her knees.

Marla Gerard looked at her old friend. “Et tu, Liz?”

“Seriously…? Look, he’s an old washed up has-been.”

“He’s nothing like us. He had no business representing the NETC…”

“...However! He was probably one of the highest ranked…”

I was the highest ranked!”

“...And he was the most sensational of NETC players in history. Not just rank, but popularity…”

“Popular?!”

“Well, not in a good way. He sold papers. He made headlines.”

“No one sells papers anymore. Give me a fucking break.”

Frankie took up the charge.
“Okay, semantics. He did sell papers, but mostly got clicks on sites. Paul Quiront had the world riveted for a time on Neu Engollon, for good reasons...before all the weird Nazi mayor shit...and running for Cantonal Executive Council. So did you, but he was the roguish bad boy, while you were like the princess of good. You could do no wrong.”

“Paul Quiront was...is...a sexist, misogynist, rapist, bigoted, hate-filled asshole, not to mention a fat, out of shape, piss poor tennis player.”

“Fifteenth in the world, Marla. Nine spots below you. Granted no one knows how he did it, but he did do it...for a time. He returned fast serves and he volleyed with the best of them.”

“Then he got booted from the NSTT and became a poster boy for hate and sat and got fat while drinking cognac in the Mayor’s residence in Albertville…”

“Except that we’re not going to mention that. He was temporarily suspended from the NSTT. That’s still controversial.”

“Not going to mention that he was elected a major city mayor, then began running for a head seat in Rhone Canton, then had eyes on the Federal Council all as a puppet in order to get an inroad for his fascist friends? That’s not going to be mentioned, Frankie?”

“Yes, that. All that bit there. We’re not going to mention that. No one gives a fuckin’ shit about domestic Neu Engollian politics except for Neu Engollians, Marla. And barely even any of us. All the International crowd remember is that Quiront was a quirky, unshaven bad boy tennis player that could shut down men ten to fifteen years younger than him. For fuck’s sake, you don’t have to marry him, you just have to go on a publicity junket tour with him to promote the re-entry of the NETC into the NSTT. Is it really that huge of a crime?”

They took a break as a server came around, mopped up Marla’s mess with an annoyed glance and a bar rag and took more drink orders.
Marla, a little bit embarrassed, looked off at a gull who had alighted onto the balcony wall nearby. She ordered another one when asked by the older female server.

Marla picked up where she left off as the server walked away.
He is a crime, Frankie! He’s the criminal. I can’t sit on the same panel as him.” She turned to Rittenhaus. “...And you, Liz. I can’t believe you would sign off on this. I mean...don’t you already get a fat paycheck from NETV as a sports anchor. Why do you need this?”

Lizbet Rittenhaus put down her drink and shifted in her seat on the lounger.
“You’re so dramatic. You act like I’m stabbing you in the back. I’m doing fine on money, Marla. It’s not about that. It’s about some recognition for our past efforts to build the NETC into what it was, what it should have continued to be. It’s about the NETC, the nation and the international tennis community recognizing that we did some good work in advancing international tennis. Matti, Dom, Alma...they’re all on board. It’s just you who’s being…”

“A bitch?”

“Stubborn, I was going to say, but, if the shoe fits…”

Marla gasped at her long time friend. “You would dare to call me…?”

“Come on, Marla. Seriously, now. You know I love you. You’re blowing this way out of proportion. Paul is a washed up, shitty joke. This is his last chance at any notice, and then he fades away and goes to terrorize an orphanage or torture livestock...I don’t know. Whatever it is that fuckers like that do.

“Go to jail. You mean they let him fade off until the next time they bring his sorry ass out of retirement...or out of jail - Because that’s where he’s going - to sell more T-shirts and promotional swag.”

“Look, this is a good chance for you and me, and all the rest to get one more paycheck to solidify retirement. Not like we get a pension out of the NETC. You can’t keep supporting yourself on doing animal rights TV PSA’s and environmental cause speeches.”

Frankie sipped at his drink while looking out the window, pretending not to hear that second to last comment.

“But why does Quiront have to be part of it? I still don’t understand that. And if so, why do you need me?”

Liz showed her frustration after having discussed the topic ad nauseum. She gave it one more shot.
“It’s a package deal. They want the bad boy for a headliner. That’s the truth of it that Frankie won’t say, but I will. But I’m not going to keep beating this any further and repeating myself over and over. You’re going to ruin it for the rest of us, then fine. I hope that sits well with you over time.”

They sat in silence in an upper level, open air deck of the Trattoria Francesca reserved by Frankie from the NETC. It was a popular seaside cafe and bar here in San Remo. The Trattoria Francesca was open early for coffee, served brunch, and stayed open late as a night spot with only a four hour window to close and reset for the next day.

Marla finished the dregs of her drink and pushed it away on the side table. She finally broke the vocal silence.
“That was kind of low, Liz. We go back a long way. I never thought you would put this kind of pressure on me to do something I will detest for some corporate bullshit.”

Frankie butt in before Liz could answer.
“Corporate? We’re a government agency of the Department of Athletics. This isn’t all going into some megacorp’s pockets, even though there will be some merchandising…”

“Not directly, no.”

He continued on unphased.
“If anything, this could put the budget in the red, flying you guys around the globe.”

Liz broke back in,
“Look, that’s not the point. The point is that you don’t even have to talk to Quiront and that is your only objection to his promotional tour, am I right? It’s a chance for all of us to get together again and have a little fun and travel to some fun places. We’ll hit Electrum, Kannap, Britonsea, all over the map and re-connect with some fans, sign some autographs, do some talk shows. You don’t even have to pretend you care what Quiront is saying, but really, I think you’re just using him as an excuse now...Anyway, I’m not trying to twist your arm, but the fact remains, Marla, that a lot of us were looking forward to this and the NETC might not go forward if you’re not on board with us. But no...stand on your grandstand and take your moral high ground.”

“Seriously? You want to be featured on a program or poster with that fuck?..” She waved off vaguely into the air off the balcony towards the north.
“I guess I don’t understand why this all counts on me to go forward.”

“It’s just not going to be the same without you is the easiest way I can put it.”

Also, people were just sick and wanted to see a continuation of the drama...The feud that had started when Quiront had acted inappropriately towards Marla, Dani, and several of their international female player friends on the NSTT circuit several years ago. Marla knew it even if they wouldn’t say it out loud.
“Also, I’m very confused about the money. First you’re fine with your NETV career and don’t need anything extra, then... All of the sudden, it is about the paycheck...Which is it, Liz?”

“Yes, I’ll admit it would be nice to have a little extra to fall back on. I’m not looking any younger and I’m only going to be a sports anchor for so long, Marla. I can see the writing on the wall there. But also, it’s not just about my gain out of this, it’s about your former teammates...Alma, Matti, Dom, Teddie, and also some of those still playing. Funding raised for the NETC means more training, better equipment, upgraded facilities. Let’s face it, the government has done fuck all for tennis for the past two years since they yanked the NETC out of the NSTT circuit.” She looked at Frankie.
“I don’t blame you guys. You had zero to work with when they cut the funding. We know that…” She turned back to Marla,
“That’s it, though. I’m done banging this drum. You’re with us or you’re not. You’re pushing me to the point that I don’t even care anymore, and that just sucks.”
Liz put her drink down and got up.
“...You have my number. You have Frankie’s and Liv’s and the rest of the Committee.”

Frankie took his cue and stood up, too. If he stayed past Lizbet’s exit, it would be ultra-awkward. Marla would have to mull it all over and hopefully make the right decision.
“We will have to start without you soon. I hope you give us a call, or hell, send an email. We can meet again to sign papers.”

Marla looked about to cry. She didn’t want to ruin a friendship over this, or several. She stood up and gave Liz a hug,
“It was good to see you. Give me some time to think, okay?”

“I know. Don’t take too long.”

Then a quick one for Frankie.
“You’re still a pain, Frankie, but it was good to see you, too.”

Frankie smiled as he pulled away.
“Oh, we’ll see each other again soon. I know it.”
TG me with questions if you got some, especially about GE&T or PMCs.

Jeckish team gear up for Electrum Slam

As Jeckland continues its return to the international sporting scene, it finds itself well aligned with the NSTT, who have also recently started a new season of tennis. This begins in Centralis, Electrum, where the season kicks off with a bang with the first Grand Slam event. A full contingent of eight singles players and four doubles teams has been sent by the Jeckish Tennis Council, with qualifiers selected using a combination of results from previous domestic tournaments and specific qualification tournaments. Whilst in most other sports upon return Jeckland faces an uphill battle to compete with established starts, the NSTT has a more open feel due to the lack of recent international competition, which could mean some Jeckish players make it far into the draw.

Sterling Harlan and Brand Seward represent the Spuds best chance of doing so in the singles events. Harlan, 23, stands at 6ft4 and boasts a booming serve, but has the skills in other areas to ensure he can compete with any style of player and is deceptively quick along the baseline. Seward, 30, is a more experienced hand, having always been in the latter rounds of domestic Jeckish tournaments since his emergence onto the scene. In the doubles, boyhood freinds Lynn Watkins and Leon Grover, both 26, look to be the nation's best hope, with their synergy off the court translating onto it seamlessly in recent years.

Some players, however, will have their journeys cut short before they've even begun. Qualifying rounds will be held in Centralis for a few players to fill the final slots in the main draw. Matt Carter will face Kannap's Devon Ruogs in the singles tomorrow, with the winner earning the right to play Mattjana's Stefan Zimmerman in the first round proper. Carter is the only Jeckish player in the singles qualification and is there by virtue of being the lowest ranked qualifier in Jeckland's selection system. The same can be said for the doubles pair of Napier Corwin and Headley Arnold, who will face Vuyani Rabada and Kaui Kamakawiwoʻole of TJUN-ia to try to avoid becoming one of just two doubles pairs to miss out on the tournament proper. The tournament then swings into full flow in the following days, with the opening round of the singles tournament being played across the Centralis Tennis Park.

Krytenian Tennis: A Pinsticker's Guide
Singles

Stephen Perez
Age: 32
Hometown: Emberton
Rank: =4

Twice a grand slam semi-finalist and undisputed Krytenian number one, Perez has a serve-and-volley game that's almost unplayable when on form. He carries the greatest weight on his shoulders of the nation's contingent, and will be seeded eighth for the Electrum Slam.

Jessica Moreaux
Age: 22
Hometown: Tuvera
Rank: 16

The lass from the Twain Valley has an ice-cold determination despite her relatively young age. Krytenian number two, and their other seed for the singles (16th). Look out for her deadly backhand.

Andrew Baumgartner
Age: 27
Hometown: Avidia
Rank: =32

His powerful serve has earned him the nickname "Boom Boom". Net game needs work, but underestimate him at your peril.

Sarah Dinsdale
Age: 21
Hometown: Tyfield
Rank: 60

Burst on the scene in the juniors at the famed Kinterten tournament, Dinsdale's athletic game has been up and down in the NSTT since. Still young enough to be a threat.

Ross Algersuari
Age: 26
Hometown: Avidia
Rank: 61

Algersuari has spent a lot of time working on his game during the NSTT's downtime. He'll be hoping to break into the top fifty.

Georgia Bassett
Age: 25
Hometown: Bromham
Rank: 72

Pinpoint accuracy in the serve; tends to be more erratic in the rallies, and that's what's held her back thus far.

Jack Watson
Age: 20
Hometown: Bradwell
Rank: UR

Athena Piper
Age: 18
Hometown: Avidia
Rank: UR

A couple of unknown quantities here. Both are competing for the first time at this year's Electrum Slam; Piper needs to play in a qualifier first.

DEUCE: TJUN-ia Joins The Revival of Tennis!

Postby TJUN-ia » Sat Apr 18, 2020 12:57 pm

Riverside has finally gained something to call its own. The TJUN-ia Tennis Federation (or TFT) has built a new training facility in the quiet incorporated city of JagBase TJUN-ia. The facility, known as the 'Astro-courts' locally, has 80 courts in total and uses all surfaces acknowledged by the NSTT (Outdoor Hard, Grass, Clay and Indoor Hard). It was from this facility that the TFT assembled some of the finest players from the amateur circuits to become the first TJUN-ian competitors in an non-motorised individual sport.

A total of 12 players were chosen from all across the International Community. 4 of them were already established as 2 teams while the remaining 8 were purely singles players. The players were split into 2 groups and then drew lots to decide the ranking order and who ended up as a doubles pairing for the Outdoor Hardcourt season.

GROUP EK
These players were drawn as 1-4 in singles and 1-2 in doubles in Electrum. They will also take part in the Tier 1 Kinterten in Kannap.

SINGLES

Harold Crawley
Age: 20
Nickname: The Crawler
Hometown: Riverside, JB TJUN-ia

Harold lives not far from the Astro-courts, so he is a bit of a local celebrity in "Tennistown". He has a certain youthful charm that he hopes will help him deliver on the court.

Valentina Spetsova
Age: 17
Nickname: Scarlet
Hometown: Szensky, CSTO Zone

The first woman to ever represent TJUN-ia on the international stage, she has a lot of pressure to deliver right away. She is reserved most of the time, but can deliver a thundering shot when required.

Austin McDanielson
Age: 18
Nickname: The Cowboy
Hometown: New Washington, NAU Zone

His thundering serve earned him his nickname, as is touted as a star in Amerika. He's a bit of a jackass most of the time, and wants nothing more than to show off (especially to people of the opposite sex).

Jean van de Kloor
Age: 21
Nickname: De Kloor of Toropo
Hometown: Toropo/Almadinat, AU Zone

He always seems to reach any ball shot towards him, no matter where he is on the court. He is proud of his Afrikaans heritage, even tattooing an image of Monokuma (the TJUN Representative of Northern Cape Transvaal) on the back of his left leg.

TEAMS

Valentina Spetsova/Austin McDanielson

Scarlet and The Cowboy were chosen as a pairing due to their famous shot power. Stans on the internet will claim they are in fact dating, but it is yet to be seen if this is actually true...

Kim Li Bo/Mei Li Bo

Kim
Age: 17
Nickname: Zuǒ Bì (Left Arm)
Hometown: Hongxai, CEA Zone

Mei
Age: 17
Nickname: Yòu Bì (Right Arm)
Hometown: Hongxai, CEA Zone

The Li Bo Twins were born to Tennis-playing parents, and that definitely showed in local competition. They made a pact with their dying mother to never battle each other on the court.

GROUP EG
These players were drawn as 5-8 in singles and 3-4 in doubles in Electrum. They will also take part in the Tier 2 Steinigestrasse Open in Gergary

SINGLES

Philippe Baloui
Age: 19
Nickname: L'artiste (The Artist)
Hometown: Roi Ville, NAU Zone

He is nicknamed for the way he swings his bat, as if power would shatter the ball. He is delicate at heart too, and doesn't really talk to anyone outside his friends in Roi Ville.

Shinji Makauchi
Age: 21
Nickname: Samurai Shinji
Hometown: Kyosaka, CEA Zone

The ball is said to come to Shinji, not the other way round. A geek at heart, any time not spent on the court is used on video games.

Felipe de la Rosa
Age: 23
Nickname: El Matador (The Matador)
Hometown: Rio Pacífico, UAS Zone

He is smooth with his style, but can surprise opponents with a fast ball out of nowhere. He has dreams of going to the Olympics, no matter the costs.

Joe Katsi
Age: 22
Nickname: The Kat of Horizon
Hometown: Port Horizon, UO Zone

The Kat just loves being on court, and has fun no matter the score. The UO is known for being a paradise, and Katsi may be its kindest son.

TEAMS

Shinji Makauchi/Felipe de la Rosa

Samurai Shinji and El Matador were put together due the friendship that was already there. They first met a year ago at an amateur tournament, and have been close ever since.

Vuyani Rabada/Kaui Kamakawiwoʻole

Vuyani
Age: 18
Nickname: VuRa
Hometown: Solwesi, AU Zone

Kaui
Age: 17
Nickname: Kaui Kama
Hometown: Kepu Manu, UO Zone

VuRa and Kaui Kama were the surprising duo that took amateur doubles by storm last year. They met via Overwatch and discovered they both played tennis, so they formed the partnership. VuRa is trying to make a life of his own away from the struggles of Solwesi, while Kaui Kama is just a guy looking for a purpose in his life that isn't restricted by the geography of the International Community.

Back in business

The Electrum Lawn Tennis Association, has, with the help and support of the tennis community restarted the NationStates Tennis Tour. The first event? The fifth edition of the Electrum Slam. Known across the multiverse for its bright blue courts, this tournament hopes to be the bright start that the organisers of the NationStates Tennis Tour are looking for in kickstarting a new series of events held across the multiverse culminating in the two end of year tournaments - the NSTT Finals and the International Tennis Trophy, a team event.

Today's matches will cover the qualification round, a free event where crowds flock to see players whose dream it is to play in the main draw of a tennis event having to play qualification in order to make those dreams come true. It's rough and brutal to see players try and avoid the disastrous fate of being set home before the tournament is scheduled to start properly. It's a fight for survival, but the reward for winning in qualifiers is a permanent underdog status that comes with formidable Electrumite support. There is nothing that Electrumites like more than an underdog story -- that remains true with the historic World Cup 78 victory by the Electrumite national football team. While Electrum didn't have a doubles pair with the misfortune of having to enter qualifying, Janet Riley, one of our best under-18 prospects will have to face Basel-Triesen's Seraphina Prochnow. Prochnow can expect an exuberant and partisan crowd if she wants to get past one of Electrum's best counterpunchers.

Should Janet Riley win her match, she will join her seven fellow Electrumites in the singles main draw. The singles team that the ELTA has submitted represents a mixture of new and old faces, so to refresh your memory, we've included a guide to all of the singles players below.

A guide to Electrum's singles players

Andrew Simmons - NSTT rank 3, #1 singles player
People say playing against Simmons is like playing against a brick wall. He is a defensive baseliner with great groundstroke technique on both wings. In a war of attrition and long rallies, Simmons will win out -- he has a lot of mental fortitude as well as agility to chase down every ball. His weakness is dealing with the unexpected, being caught flat footed by an experienced player in a sequence of points can turn the tide towards the opponent, but such situations are rare.

Pelissa Giannapolous - NSTT rank 11, #2 singles player
At the other end of the spectrum, Pelissa Giannapolous prefers to keep her points short and sharp. A serve-and-volleyer, she is the antithesis of Simmons' playstyle, Giannapolous prefers coming into short balls and expending as little energy as possible. Her hands are well known for finding the right amount of spin needed to make impossible gets for her opponent. As expected, strong baseliners have given her trouble.

Carmichael Brown - NSTT rank 17, #3 singles player
Brown is a hotheaded player whose main strength lies in his serves. He is also the youngest of the experienced Electrumite players. It is very rare for opponents to get break-point opportunities on the Brown serve, with service games often lasting less than a minute, immediately heaping pressure on opponents to defend their own service games. Brown, however, is easily frustrated, and can make inappropriate or half-hearted shots.

Livinia Moore - NSTT rank 21, #4 singles player
Moore has an unusual technique. Her serves are often accurate and reliable, and she is rather well known for her unorthodox variety of moves that can hide the ball, such as her two-handed forehand and backhand, with lobs and volleys coming out of nowhere to frustrate her opponents. Each shot is unexpected, and even Moore sometimes doesn't know where her shots are going to land.

The following are new players who have only played in Electrum's domestic tennis circuit, and were chosen by the ELTA to replace retiring players

Marcus Hathwar - #5 singles player
Hathwar is the first ranked domestic player - the reason for his many victories is his accurate forehand and his quick footed movement. It seems like he plays every match with ease. He is also an instinctive player with a lot of matchsense, allowing him to play and mix up shots in the moment rather than coming into every match with a gameplan.

Jack Ho - #6 singles player
While not as well known for his serve, Ho's main playing style is all about consistency. Preferring to hang around the baseline, he uses groundstrokes to push his opponents around in the hopes that they commit an error, or to give him room to generate winners. He also hits the balls earlier, giving his opponents less time to analyse where his shots are going.

Maddison Scott - #7 singles player
Maddison Scott incorporates a wide variety of shots in her skillset, with her kick serve and backhand slice her signature moves. Scott's crafty style allows her to come into the net, slice her opponents to disrupt their rhythm, especially those on the baseline.

Janet Riley- #8 singles player
As mentioned above, Janet Riley is a defensive counterpuncher who is known for extending rallies in an effort to draw both forced and unforced errors from her opponent. With the misfortune of coming in last during Electrum's ranking tournament, she must go through qualifying before entering the tournament proper. Because of her counterpunching style, she is an excellent returner but her service is merely acceptable, with first serves often being faults. She is also known for her ability to do her squats while on her backhand, reaching seemingly impossible shots and generating power to get the ball right into the corners of the court.

DEUCE: Centralis Welcomes Back The Sport It Loves

Postby TJUN-ia » Sun Apr 19, 2020 10:17 am

Sunday in Centralis, Electrum marked the return of the NSTT after a lengthy hiatus. Qualifying day was upon us at the Centralis Tennis Park, and the crowds of locals and foreigners alike watched as dreams were dashed in the hunt for the trophies of the Electrum Slam. Let's see how TJUN-ia's players in this round got on. The players from TJUN-ia not taking part in qualifying were in the stands to see how their compatriots fared.

SINGLES
Joe Katsi took on Krytenia's Athena Piper. The Kat of Horizon is 4 years older than Piper, but they were both competing for the first time in NSTT. Joe didn't mind if he won this game or not, he just wanted to play his best and see how far he got.

The first set was an indication of what was to come. The Kat was playing like this game it was just for fun...but he was actually quite good. Piper tried her best to keep up with the chill Katsi, but Joe was always one step ahead of her. The players looked on in surprise as The Kat beat Piper in straight sets. He shook hands with both Piper and the umpire, but then proceeded to blow kisses into the crowd in attendance. It was met with applause and cheers from the Electrumites, to the surprise of many in the TJUN-ian camp.

The team of Vuyani Rabada and Kaui Kamakawiwoʻole took on the Jeckland duo of Napier Corwin and Headley Arnold. TJUN-ia was in it's baby steps in this sport while Jeckland were returning to sport in general after a hiatus.

The first set was a disaster for VuRa and Kaui Kama. They struggled against the more experienced play of both Corwin and Arnold, who looked imperious from the start. Losing the first set 6-1, they looked certain for a quick exit.

Set 2, however, was a different story. The TJUN-ian duo looked like they got some mojo into their play, and managed a tight set with the Spuds. In the end the set was tied 6-6 and required a tiebreaker to decide it. The Spuds were looking to put away the Jaguars, but to no avail. VuRa and Kaui Kama survived 5-3.

Set 3 was more controlled by the TJUN-ians as the Spuds looked as if they had lost steam in the tiebreaker. It wasn't easy, but VuRa and Kaui Kama managed to pull away and secure the fact that all 12 TJUN-ian players will play in the Electrum Slam proper. They posed for the crowd during the celebrations, like they had posted the Play Of The Game.

Vuyani Rabada/Kaui Kamakawiwoʻole bt Napier Corwin/Headley Arnold (JEC) (1-6, 7-6(5-3), 6-4)

Carter fights through as Jeckish singles preparations ramp up

Michael Carter fought back from a set behind to defeat Devon Ruogs of Kannap 2-6 6-3 6-4 and book his place in the main draw of the Electrum Slam. Ruogs broke twice early on in the first set to threaten a whitewash as Carter struggled early on, characterised by two consecutive double faults early on in the game. Visibly frustrated, shots were going loose and wide of their intended targets and despite an improvement, few would have bet against Ruogs as the first set concluded 6-2. Carter's struggles however looked to be more in his mind than on the court, and this showed as he roared back to take the second set comfortably by a margin of 6-3. The third set was played at a surprisingly high quality for this round of the competition, with both players playing as they had in their respective victorious sets. Both served incredibly well, holding the game at 4-4 until a ninth game which would prove to be decisive. Carter stuck to the baseline and dragged Ruogs into long rallies, creating a huge amount of tension for the spectators. After having three break points himself and Ruogs having a game point, Carter eventually broke through with a blistering forehand to take a marathon game. After such a mentally draining game it always appeared likely that the winner would go on to take the match and so it proved, with Carter not dropping a point in the following service game to claim a victory. He will face Stefan Zimmerman of Mattjana in the first round proper.

In less positive news for the Jeckland team, Napier Corwin and Headley Arnold failed to come through their qualifier against Vuyani Rabada and Kaui Kamakawiwoʻole from TJUN-ia despite winning the first set 6-1. The pair will rue their lack of killer instinct in allowing their opponents to win a second set tiebreaker which would have ended the game otherwise. Once that had happened there was only likely to be one winner and so it proved, making the Jeckish pair one of only two doubles pairs to leave Electrum without playing in the main draw.

Tomorrow sees the beginning of the main singles draw, with four Jeckish players in action. Here's a preview of each of those matches...

Maria Julenic vs. Clinton Harley (Janine Gredello Arena, Match 2 (N)

The only Jeckish player on the show courts on day 1 is Clinton Harley, who's match with Mattjana's Maria Julenic rounds off the action in the evening session on the Janine Gradello Arena. Julenic goes into the game as favourite having had past experience of international tennis, but Harley loves the big occasion and will relish the opportunity to play in front of an international audience. I wouldn't put money against either of these players - expect a cracking match.

Violet Prieto vs. Christmas Hobbs (Court 5, Match 3)

The first of a Jeckish double header on court 5, Christmas Hobbs will begin his campaign against Violet Prieto of Eastfield Lodge. A suprise qualifier for this event, Hobbs' raw ability has masked certain technical deficiencies in his game, most notably his backhand, in the Jeckish system, but these flaws will be more harshly examined in international play

Georgia Bassett vs. Gabby Gardener (Court 5, Match 4)

Jeckish fans on Court 5 for the Hobbs game won't want to get out of their seats as Gabby Gardener makes his international debut against the service supremo Georgia Bassett. Gardener will have to hope his returns are at their best in order to compete with his Krytenian opponent.

Anne Valens vs. Caden Healey (Court 7, Match 3)

An intriguing clash on Court 7 sees Caden Healey face Lisander's Anne Valens. Both players will fancy their chances in this tie, with Healey hoping his potentially lethal serves land in the box on this occasion.
Winners: N/A
Runners Up: WBC 30 & 31, Memorial Cup
Semi Final: CE 26, WBC 35, WLC 20

What to look out for: your guide to Day 1 of the Electrum Slam

From viruses that infect new hosts in the pursuit of following their dreams in playing tennis, to new and emerging nations playing in the NSTT, today's matches feature some compelling and interesting stories. We will share with you some things to look out for, whether you're inside and watching the tennis over multiple screens, or whether you are in the best seat in the Phillip Maxwell Arena.

[1] Leo Garry (BRI) vs Alma Castner (BTZ)

Leo Garry, the top seed, will open proceedings at Phillip Maxwell. He is a well known in Electrum for his heartbreaking loss to Ceni's Andy Amada at the final of the Electrum Slam two seasons ago. He will come back with a vengeance, and is hoping to go that one step further this edition and win his inaugural Grand Slam. Great journeys begin with a first step, and Alma Castner from debuting nation Basel-Triesen has the unenviable task of facing the number one seed. If you are a newbie to tennis, and want to see a master player in action, this is the one to watch. Castner will probably be outclassed, but she will probably be cherish the experience of playing in a Centre Court against the top seed.

[17] Carmichael Brown (ETM) vs Tamara Hucsak (MTJ)

For those looking for a little bit of fire and action, Carmichael Brown faces off against Tamara Hucsak, the first matchup at Janine Gredello Arena. Carmichael Brown is well known for his outbursts, and with his mid-tier seeding, means that there will be many close matches on his radar. He faces the unknown in Hucsak -- she's never played in an international level before and a video search of Hucsak playing in domestic tennis in Mattijana yields no results. Brown will easily sail through this match if he keeps calm, but if Hucsak frustrates him, or the crowd is too loud, then all bets are off the table and Hucsak might just steal an upset.

SARA (EAS) vs Eckehard Blumenberg (GGY)

I think many people would want to watch this match for the sheer novelty of watching a virus-infected host play tennis. Blumenberg is dealing with a real unknown here, and will probably be very scared of becoming the host himself if he is not careful. Apparently, the ELTA had to be advised to be on the lookout for "a primatologist, a virologist, a plucky schoolgirl, a brooding purple-haired sorceror, and a busty woman with needlessly revealing robot armour," as they are all apparently chasing the virus strains. While some people are concerned that letting these two virus strains and their hosts play may be in violation of the Controlled Biological Weapons Act, a court hearing decided to allow the athletes to play on the proviso that they do not infect any Electrumite humans, spectators or any other human while in Electrum.

Several Months Ago:

The rag-tag band of monster-hunters were beginning to worry about their friend, the cat-girl Naomi. She had been behaving very strangely. She didn't answer her phone. She missed school. She wore sports bras instead of allowing her breasts to bulge out of her skimpy blouses and jiggle around, and she wore skorts that actually covered her butt cheeks. She had acquired a pet orangutan, which nobody knew where it came from. And she had trained the orangutan to play tennis, a sport that Naomi had never shown the slightest interest in before.

One afternoon, the monster-hunters went to the tennis courts looking for their friend. She was there as usual. The schoolgirl Hiroko waved and called out to her: "Hey, Naomi!"

The cat-girl didn't react at all. That was definitely not normal.

"Naomi!" the schoolgirl called out louder.

There was a weird shift in the cat-girl's facial expression and she looked around confused. "Oh, wow, I totally spaced out there," she said. "What were you saying?"

The cyborg princess with the needlessly revealing armor came up beside the schoolgirl and asked, "Are you okay, Naomi? You've been spacing out a lot lately."

"I don't know... I feel weird," the cat-girl said. "I almost feel like I'm coming down with a cold, but I never actually get the cold. And I keep losing track of what time it is. That's why I've been absent from school."

"It could be a spell," her sorceror friend suggested. He reached a hand toward her and light glowed from his fingertips. He closed his eyes, concentrating on his magic and soaking in the cat-girl's aura. "Hmm... You don't appear to be cursed."

"Something is wrong, though," the cat-girl said unhappily. "I haven't been myself lately."

"Maybe it's not magic," the sorceror said.

"It could be nanites," the cyborg princess suggested.

"Nanites?"

"Yes, tiny robots that can infect the body like a virus and take control."

Just then the orangutan ambled up behind the cat-girl and tried to get her attention. She looked startled like she was about to scream, but she abruptly swallowed the scream and began gesturing for the orangutan to leave the monster-hunters alone and let them talk.

"What's the deal with the orangutan?" the schoolgirl asked.

"Uh... Oh, I've been looking after him. I think he escaped from a circus or something," the cat-girl answered in a voice that didn't sound quite right.

The monster-hunters were more convinced than ever that something was wrong, but they didn't know what. They took turns surreptitiously following their friend the cat-girl to look for more clues. The cyborg princess wanted to check her blood for nanites, but Naomi insisted she didn't think it was nanites and she didn't want to get her blood tested. The monster-hunters became even more suspicious that they were dealing with nanite mind-control when Naomi's tennis partner the orangutan began to show signs of illness.

They also realized they were not the only people watching the cat-girl and the orangutan. At first they thought the mysterious stranger watching from the opposite side of the tennis court was the puppet-master behind Naomi's strange affliction -- but after tackling and interrogating the stranger, they discovered she was just a virologist who was interested in the orangutan's illness.

And then one day the orangutan was gone. The virologist managed to find the corpse and collect some blood samples, which tested positive for Ebola, but did not contain any nanites. "Then we still don't know why Naomi is acting so weird!" the monster-hunters complained.

"No, Ebola doesn't explain your friend's behavior," the virologist agreed. "But she's been exposed to the virus, and it's possible that we were exposed too. We'll have to isolate ourselves."

When Naomi's friends told her she needed to isolate herself, it became very clear that she was more than just a little out of sorts -- she was possessed. Maybe not by a demon, but she was clearly possessed by something. She refused to go into isolation, even after they explained that she had potentially been exposed to Ebola. When they tried to grab her, she slashed at them with her claws and leapt away, bounding across the rooftops from building to building in superhuman leaps. The sorceror watched her jumping away, then calmly raised his hand to wipe away the blood where she'd scratched him.

"We have to find out what's wrong with her!" the schoolgirl said.

"We have to isolate ourselves!" the virologist retorted. "We shouldn't even be out here right now! This is incredibly irresponsible!"

When the sorceror fell ill a few days later, they were worried for him, but not terribly surprised. When he tested negative for Ebola and was gasping for breath -- THAT was a surprise. He recovered and the others were lucky enough not to catch anything, but by the time they got out of quarantine, Naomi had disappeared.

Present Day:

When their hosts were asleep, AAUGCC and GUACUU behaved less like mind-controlling demons and more like ordinary viruses. They had to replace the copies of themselves that got damaged by clumsiness or the hosts' immune systems. Sometimes GUACUU did not notice immediately when its host woke up, so the cat-girl Naomi got a few moments in control of her own body.

The cat-girl was not sure where she was and how she had gotten there. The hotel room was very nice, but what on Earth was she doing there? By now she was sure the gaps in her memory were not just losing her train of thought, but she never stayed in control long enough to figure out what was going on. She was terrified of the thing that had taken control of her, and she didn't understand what it was.

She got dressed the way she liked -- with a push-up bra, a tiny top, and cut-off jeans that left her butt cheeks hanging out -- and rummaged through the room, looking for her phone, hoping she could call her friends before the thing took control of her again.

When GUACUU regained control, the first thing it did was get changed into more sensible clothes. Why do I even pack this crap? it wondered as it unfastened the bra and set it aside.

AAUGCC was eating breakfast when GUACUU went to meet up for the day. Controlling their hosts for most of the day meant they also had to feed them, and AAUGCC's gorilla had a big appetite. GUACUU lounged on a nearby bench strumming an out-of-tune banjo while AAUGCC ate. The sound was not anything resembling music. The virus had not figured out how to tune the instrument, did not realize that adjusting the length of the string by pressing it against the neck of the banjo would produce different notes, and did not know anything about composing melodies. "I told you we could compose symphonies if we put our minds to it!" AAUGCC said.

"I'm not composing a symphony -- I'm trying to figure out how this thing works," GUACUU said, a little concerned that AAUGCC was musically-illiterate enough to mistake her random out-of-tune strumming for a symphony. The SARS virus knew it was making noise, not music. It just had absolutely no idea what it was doing wrong.

When AAUGCC had finished feeding its voracious host, they went out to the tennis courts to watch some of the qualifying matches. "I can't believe we're really going to compete with these people!" said AAUGCC. "It's so exciting!"

"I can't believe it either," said GUACUU. "This plan was way too dumb to actually work."

"Just one more day, and then we get to play!"

"Yeah, try not to kill your host."

HARLEY AND GARDENER WIN THRILLERS AS SPUDS GEAR UP FOR TRIPLE HEADER

Clinton Harley and Gabby Gardener both won dramatic five set matches to reach the second round of the Electrum Slam, with Caden Haley and Christmas Hobbs both bowing out after defeats

Harley upset the odds in coming from two sets behind to defeat seeded Maria Julenic 1-6 2-6 6-3 7-6 6-4 to reach the second round in a dramatic game in the Janine Gredello Arena which captured the attention of Jeckish fans and neutrals alike. Julenic took early control of the match and easily won the first two sets without seeming to come out of second gear against a below par Harley. Viewers at home could have been forgiven for switching channels to watch the action on one of the other courts as this looked a forgone conclusion. However Harley had other ideas. "At the start of the third I thought I was probably gonna lose, but I never go down without a fight. I made sure I did the basics right, landed as many first serves as I could and took it from there." Whatever it was, it did the trick, as Harley reeled off four straight games at the start of the third set to spark this game to life. A recovery break from Julenic was not enough to stop the third set going to the Jeckish player. The game was afoot. The fourth set was an epic back and forth tussle which could only be survived by a tiebreak. Harley survived a 23 shot rally for match point and clawed his way back to force the game to a deciding set. Despite being the unseeded player, the momentum was with Harley and any smart punter would have put some money on him going all the way. Harley raced into a 3-0 lead and held his nerve and serve to close out an incredible match. Both players embraced at the net after the game, knowing they had put on a spectacle for the capacity crowd.

Gardener also won in five sets in another enthralling match against Georgia Bassett. After both players alternated sets in dominant fashion, both the third and fourth would end in tiebreaks. Gardener won the third 7-4 before squandering two match points in the fourth to allow Bassett a 9-7 victory. The fifth set looked to be headed in the same direction before Gardener managed a rare break of the Bassett serve in the tweflth and decisive game, coming out with a 7-5 victory. "Credit to Georgia, she gave me one hell of a game out there" said Gardener after the match. "I need to get back to my hotel room and get some rest to make sure I'm fresh for the second round."

It wasn't all glory for the Jeckish contingent however, as Caden Haley went down in four sets to Anne Valens of Lisander. Haley lost the first two sets, the second of which on tiebreak, before bouncing back to win the third 6-3. However the Jeckish player then ran out of steam, losing the fourth set 6-3 to bring his time in Electrum to a close. There was also a four set defeat for Christmas Hobbs, who came from a set down to lead 4-2 in the third before a string of unforced errors cost him dearly against Violet Prieto.

Two out of four isn't a bad return for the country however, with the top three ranked Jeckish players still to play tomorrow. All of them will play consecutively on court five, with the Jeckish fan group the Super Spuds promising to make themselves known. Let's preview those games now, along with qualifier Micheal Carter's clash.

Maddison Scott vs. Brand Seward (Court 5, Game 2)
Seward faces a tough test against home player Maddison Scott. Seward's all round game should see him relaitvely well equipped to deal with anything the unpredictable Scott can throw at him, although he may find himself off the baseline more often that he would hope for.

Abelie Fonatan vs. Sterling Harlan (Court 5, Game 3)
The Jeckish national champion begins his campaign against Abelie Fontana from Reçueçn. Harlan's booming left handed serve often makes headlines over his technical profligacy. Both will have to be on show here and in any potential further games in this tournament.

Booker Hathway vs. Maximiliano Gasset (Court 5, Game 4)
Rounding off the Court 5 action is Hathway vs. Gasset, a chance for Jeckland to level the score with Lisander after Caden Haley's exit. Hathway's high energy game makes him a tough opponent for anyone as he zips around the court.

Micheal Carter vs. Stefan Zimmerman (Court 6, Game 4)
Qualifier Carter was the only victor in that round not to win in straight sets, but will hope that any tiredeness is going before his clash with Stefan Zimmerman in the final game on Court 6
Winners: N/A
Runners Up: WBC 30 & 31, Memorial Cup
Semi Final: CE 26, WBC 35, WLC 20

DEUCE: The Highs and Lows of Day 1

Postby TJUN-ia » Mon Apr 20, 2020 12:49 pm

It was a beautiful day in Centralis, Electrum as tennis (officially) returned to the spotlight. The 64 players of the 128 player field began their attempts the win the Electrum Slam at the Centralis Tennis Park. Some journeys will last longer than others, but all of them will be involved in the revival of the NSTT. 4 TJUN-ian players were in action today, so let's see how they got on...

COURT 8
We begin on the last listed court where the first match involved our number 4. Jean van de Kloor, De Kloor of Toropo, took on Justin White of Northwest Kalactin, a guy known for his quick feet.

The first 2 sets were a back-and-forth affair, with de Kloor taking the first set 6-4 and White bouncing back to take the 2nd 6-3. Set 3 was more chaotic, with drop shots and shot far-reaching shots the name of the game. In the end, White fell apart in the tiebreaker. The set was de Kloors 7-6(4-2). Set 4 was just smooth sailing as Jean sealed the game 6-3. A great performance by the Afrikaner.

Jean van de Kloor bt Justin White (NWK) (6-4, 3-6, 7-6(4-2), 6-3)

JANINE GREDELLO ARENA (SHOW COURT 1)
TJUN-ia had a player in the Janine Gredello. His name was Philippe Baloui. L'artiste was thrown into a baptism of fire against 29th seed Jason Gordon from Britonisea, a powerhouse of this sport from the old days of the NSTT.

Gordon won the first set, as you would expect, but Baloui fought back, to the surprise of many in the arena. He took Set 2 7-5 and Set 3 via tiebreaker. Gordon looked in trouble by the swings of L'artiste.

But then Gordon turned on the burners and produced a performance worthy of his seeded status. 6-1 in the 4th, 6-3 in the 5th and Baloui couldn't do anything about it. He left the court upset of the result slipping from his hands, but he knew that experience was vital to doing well in any tournament. This will get better for L'artiste in the long run, but for now it's back to the hotel.

[29] Jason Gordon (BRI) bt Philippe Baloui (6-4, 5-7, 6-7(3-5), 6-1, 6-3)

PETER OAKER ARENA (SHOW COURT 2)
While Baloui had his struggles, Joe Katsi had his own match to deal with. The Kat of Horizon, who had to go through a qualifying match to even make the Slam, now had to take on Krytenia's Jessica Moreaux, seeded 16th. He would have most of the crowd support, however, as the Peter Oaker was known for its unwavering support of underdogs like Katsi.

Jessica clearly wanted this match to end quickly, and she helped that cause by outplaying Katsi in the first 2 sets to take both of them convincingly (6-2, 6-4). Katsi, who was having the time of his life playing against The lass from the Twain Valley, looked like he would just take the L and move on.

But then something happened. The Kat of Horizon got his claws out, and unexpectedly took the game to Moreaux. The crowd look on in sheer bewilderment as the determination of Jessica started to waiver. The Kat took set 3 6-4 and by set 4 the game was certainly on. Katsi had caught Jessica off guard and the crowd loved it. Set 4 went to the Kat 6-1, and just like that we were tied.

Set 5 was tense for both players. Jessica trying to avoid the embarrassment of losing to a qualifier, Joe looking to pull off an unexpected reverse-sweep. The game went back and forth but in the end Katsi, somehow, managed to overcome the odds a became the first TJUN-ian to beat a ranked player. The crowd went bonkers as the players shook hands, and The Kat was crying. We waived to the cheers of the Electrumites, tears in his eyes as he realised the magnitude of what he had done. The Kat of Horizon, a qualifier, had just reverse-swept the 16th ranked player in the NSTT, and nobody in TJUN-ia could believe what they had just seen...

[Q] Joe Katsi bt [16] Jessica Moreaux (KRY) (2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5)

COURT 4
Now, let's finally talk about The Cowboy. Austin McDanielson took on Gaëlle Sellier, the No.1 player from Recuecn.

The first 3 sets were a back-and-forth affair. Austin took sets 1 and 3 while Sellier took set 2. The Cowboy looked in control, but that was when he got cocky. He started to slip up on purpose to give the "inferior" Sellier a chance to "see more of his moves". This empowered Sellier to take not just set 4 but the match as a whole. Austin's ego had cost him progression. Let's hope he can learn before the doubles tournament kicks off...

Gaëlle Sellier (RCN) bt Austin McDanielson (4-6, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4)

Interview with Leo Garry

Postby Britonisea » Mon Apr 20, 2020 1:56 pm

Interview with Leo Garry, Britonish #1

Reporter: Leo Garry has had quite the journey during his time at the NationStates Tennis Tour. His journey started back in 2014, when he made his debut on the international stage, hoping that he would one day make an impact and become the biggest name in tennis. When Leo Garry made a splash onto the scene, it was all about Ricardo Toli - who at the time was the Britonish #1 and who ended the year as the 4th best player. Leo Garry's best tournament was the Cenial Masters where he managed to get to the Round of 64. Some more time would pass until Leo Garry started to gain his feet and today, I am going to be joined with a figure that has made his way into the hearts of many Britons that watch tennis religiously. Leo's loveable character both on and off the court made him a fan favourite, not just inside the country but across many of the NSTT world and now that the NSTT has been re-established, he's hoping that the fans he once had will cheer him through the Electrum Slam. Leo is ranked number one coming into this competition and we certainly hope that along with his fellow Britonish compatriots, he goes a very long way in the competition. I know what we'd love to see - for the first time ever - is an all Britonish Grand Slam final, but a lot of work has to be done beforehand. I think it's time to hear from the man himself; Leo. Hello, Leo, welcome to the studio today. I just want to take you through the first two years of the NSTT. In 2014, you were the seventh best Britonish player in 60th place World Wide. You closed the gap to 37th best in the World in 2015, tipping Ricardo Toli by a single placement to become the Britonish Number One. Could you speak through what was going on in your mind during those two years and what helped you propel you to become the man you are today?

Leo Garry: Well firstly, thank you very much for inviting me to speak about my journey, I really appreciate it. I just would like to say, before I go into that, I am so happy that the NSTT is back up and running. You know, I have played in Britonish Tennis Leagues - it's our national sport and so I still have that Britonish following. But I have really missed, you know, going around to different nations - Electrum, Ceni, Mercedini, Krytenia - to name a few. I'm happy that I will experience this once again. But yeah, to answer your question...2014 was a year of finding my feet, really. I didn't know where I was going to land, I didn't know whether I was going to be a surprise Britonish #1 or whether I was going to outright flop. I didn't do as well as I wanted to do in 2014. I wanted to be the Britonish outbreak, you know. That didn't happen in the end, but that's fine. I have the drive to be the best, I think all the tennis players that participate do - I mean otherwise why are you here? 2014 did hurt me a bit and I made a promise to myself that I will be the World Number One someday and whilst I am still not there yet, I am sure that I will one day be able to claim that title - if I keep on going. 2015 was a great year for me. I think it was the Kannapian Invitational where I got to the quarter-final for the first time ever and that gave me such a huge boost. My confidence went through the roof - I was the Briton who was able to go the furthest during 2015 and it paid off in the end. Of course, I was unsure as to what was going to happen in 2016 - I am sure we will get to that at a later point - but I felt as though...my journey had finally started. I was thrilled, honestly.

Reporter: Yeah, I can imagine that for you it would be a great moment. I've definitely been observing you in Britonish tennis for a while now and I definitely thought that that moment was the birth of something great - a new tennis star was born. Right, let's move onto 2016 - shall we? 2016 was a different year for you. You took some time away from the Tour to look at the XI Olympic Games that, at the time, were being held in Aeropag in Paripana in the Games which lead to Britonisea's most successful medal haul with you contributing to our placement, very much so as you won Men's Singles Gold! This did have a consequence as you slipped to 61st in the World in the Tennis Tour, but still held on to the Britonish #1 title. 2016 was a big year so I am just going to ask you about that - how was 2016 for you?

Leo Garry: 2016 was a very weird year. Speaking generally, tennis in Britonisea was at an all-time low and I think many Britons couldn't believe that there weren't any Britons in the top 50...the top 60 and I think when you don't see someone who represents you and your culture succeed in a sport that is our national sport, you start to believe, you know, is it worth it? The first half of the year was tough because there weren't any role-models, especially for the Britonish uprising stars. Tennis became a game for the Cenians and a couple from Schottia. I didn't want to overdo it, you know. My goal was the go to the Olympics in Aeropag, a totally different scene, and see how I do there. I do apologise to the Britonish public for going rogue during the 1st half of 2016 but I think I pulled it back when I participated at the Olympics. Going Aeropag was...well, I wish the Olympics counted officially...Aeropag was the best experience of my life. You know, there are so many tennis players that don't compete in the NSTT that were sent to the Olympic Games and it was so interesting to speak to these people and learn their struggles of practising tennis in conditions that, well aren't as quality as the conditions in Britonisea. It was interesting to learn about different styles of tennis and through simply playing a different tennis player from an unheard-of country, you start to pick up on different techniques that you could use coming into the NSTT. I loved it. Playing Paul Quiront from Neu Engollon in the Semi-Finals was interesting. In 2016, he was the 15th best in the World and so he was definitely expected to beat me and go on to win the Olympic trophy but one set each and onto the third set, I managed to show him who's boss haha. I heard Paul Quiront isn't such a nice guy now? I don't know the rumours very well so I'll continue. The Gold Medal Match at Olympic Tower in Aeropag wow. Against Martin Bond from Ndaku...It felt like such an easy-flowing match. I wanted the victory...so...so...badly and I wasn't going to let it go. 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 and bam. I was an Olympic champion. To this day I can't believe it, it brings a tear to my eye every time I think about it. And of course, I reached the World Tour Final in 2016 playing in the Doubles with Elizabeth...who won the female tennis title the same year! So 2016 was memorable to say the least.

Reporter: Well, we will be back right after the break as we speak to Leo about 2017 and 2018 as Leo starts to make an impact on the top end of the rankings. Don't go too far...

Guide to Reçuecian competitors as the Electrum Slam

Reçuecian journalists have once again made an elementary mistake, after a Reçueçn Times journalist miscalculated the time difference between Electrum and Reçueçn, leading to the entire press crew missing its flight. This has meant no coverage of the qualification round and first round proper. However, while stuck in Reçueçn waiting for another flight, the journalists were able to provide a brief background for each of the Reçuecian competitors in Electrum for the tournament. Of course, even this would've been more use if published earlier, but here we are.

1. Gaëlle Sellier
Sellier is the best hope for Reçuecian fans who will want to see one of their compatriots go far in this competition. Her indomitable spirit and non-stop drive have pushed her to the top of the game in Reçueçn, so facing opponents of an even higher caliber will be exciting, but a challenge. Sellier has the support of many older fans, who appreciate her perseverance and more traditional approach to the game. She has already won her first match, in which she came back twice from having fallen behind a set to win against an overconfident Austin McDanielson from TJUN-ia.

2. Thibaut Berthelot
Berthelot has never been Reçueçn's big tennis star—that honor belonged first to Le Floch, and now Sellier, and probably soon, Fontana. He hasn't been at the top of the national rankings ever, which is a bit of a shame, given how consistently good he's been over his career. He's sadly also already been eliminated from the slam by Katherine Frye of Ethane.

3. Abelie Fontana
Fontana is incredibly young—still a teenager—and she's started to catch the eye of the nation. She is a unique representative for the nation: most Reçuecians are French speakers, followed by German speakers, but Fontana is one of the small minority of Italian speakers in the country. As such she is in a special position to represent her home as well as her country. The hype over a young, up-and-coming tennis player who's incredibly charismatic and photogenic is understandable, but Fontana will have to follow it up with a strong performance to prove that she's not just all show.

4. Lucien Le Floch
Le Floch, more than any one else on this list, is getting old. He's behind Sellier, Berthelot, andFontana in skill now, but that didn't use to be the case. In fact, Le Floch was the indisputable best Reçuecian tennis player for an entire era, although he never entered the NSTT during that time. It's becoming more painful to watch him play, since it just brings back old memories, but a lot of his fans do in fact support him for those memories.

5-8. Esterina Picarelli, Tristan Delisle, Hildebrant Weisgerber, Arthur Leloup
There's a clear difference in ability between the top four Reçuecian players and "the best of the rest" represented by Picarelli, Delisle, Weisgerber, and Leloup. That's not to say that these four aren't good. But the fact that three of them have already been eliminated from the slam shows something. The only one still left in the singles tournament is Leloup, who won his qualifying match against Mattijania's Dominik Lintner in just two sets. However, these four are also two doubles pairs, and haven't started playing their games for that yet. so maybe there's still hope for some of these athletes.

9 and 10. Camille Fournier and Inès Fournier
The Fournier siblings can't be separated from each other. Their entire game is built upon their mutual understanding, both on and off the court. They bring an incredible synergy to the doubles court, and it plays such a major role in making them as good as they are that neither of the siblings has seriously competed for a singles trophy in some time now.

11. Adelinde Günther
Günther, who will be competing in the doubles tournament with Lucas Magnier, brings a defensive approach to her half of the partnership. Best in front near the net, her strength is less aggressive finishing and more just a great reach and very consistent returns.

12.Lucas Magnier
Magnier adds the fire to his doubles pair with Günther. His serve isn't spectacular, but he manages to get the most unreachable cross-court shots, placed perfectly between his doubles opponents.
