*Locker Room, Moravica, Banija; Post-3rd game*

*Y. Fujita looks around room at team, in various states of anger, sadness, and nonchalance*
YF: Well?
*Few mumbled responses, sighs*
*Fujita leaves*
K. Rensselaer: "Do any of you have anything articulate to say?"
A. Valerio: "Yes. We were fine until the bottom of the fourth inning. I can pick apart the two, three mistakes we made up until then, but after that there was some good things."
M. Slatek: "All of the excuses that we could come up with for that inning, I think are true."
D. Van Epps: "Let me list them out for you: 5 errors, a waist-high changeup to the best hitter on the team, and playing the best team in the world three games in a row. Anything else?"
R. Stohr: "I just think the offense couldn't get any momentum going, all 27 innings. We hit into so many double plays, that near half our baserunners got nowhere. Assan Condé's slider was hard to see for some of us-"
J. Leslie: "All of us. They induced 21 groundouts! 59 in three games"
RS: "Well, yeah..."
*Fujita returns, grabs keys off table*
YF: "Then figure it out. We have to execute every single play, and give those other teams no help."
*Fujita leaves again*
N. Dublin: "And our pitchers didn't do terrible, I guess, but none of our starters did great. We won't get anywhere as a team unless our players, all of us, start playing like an internationally renowned team, rather than... that."
L. Sable: "We can do this. It's hard, being a first- year team in one of the best divisions in the tournament. But we have to make some changes, to make sure a beat-down like that doesn't happen again."
E. Ferrasen: "It motivate you more, if you want me to have my job to do if we are not losing by lot?"
V. DeClair: "Yeah, let's give our boy Erik a chance to play. He can't sit down in the bullpen all week."
KR: "Alright. Let's go out to The Local Tavern for the next three games, and get ready to play some real Inner AginanaUsordian baseball."
M. Vigil: "Lions on three. One, Two, Three"
All: "Lions!"

Bolgano wins 2 games against Lisander.
It ranks third under Cascom and St. Saratoga.

Valls City, Bolgano.
Good evening for all Bolgano, thanks for following us in this special newsletter of World Baseball Classic 48 held in Drawkland, in addition to this edition being the 48th, 48 teams signed up where it was totally a coincidence that rarely happens in the sport, to start Baseball is the second most popular sport in Bolgano, underneath only Soccer, despite that always their parties bring many fans not only from the 2 teams, tourists and even people who are not interested in the sport come to see the games of league, this second edition for ¨celestes¨ will be potentially good for us, it begins with Lisander who in 3 games showed the strength of our team, Lisander number 15 in the world and clear favorite for victory in this series, but they could not do anything Much, the first game had the difficulty of Bolgano that they started winning in the first ining, although the defense could not do anything for 2 consecutive races and an error by Hirojima e n third baseman who clearly left his mistakes were affected for the team, in the sixth inning a Home Run by Hallum Wiljneider showed this player's strength to tie the game, three runs in the final ining made Lisander celebrate a victory, not him It was, at Bolgano's last chance, a hit in left field, positioned Kaulbart at second base, then Bergan came with a very strong batting, only reaching first and Koulbart at third, the next is Kibaundu who is a hitter with great strength in his arms, he took her out of the park to celebrate a draw, Lisander had to change his pitcher, although if this change served him since he made a strike out, Rimy Oilans achieved a triple that left Lisander in trouble, Versta failed and received one out in right field, at the end colban got a hit that gave oilans a chance to win the game.

Game 2, The players already prepared for a very important second game with Beislinho as the starting pitcher, all believe again in a victory since each result will be important for the classification, Lisander managed to get 2 runs in the first inning so that Da Silva has some pressure but he could survive another ining, the one who had problems was the Lisander pitcher who received three runs in the blink of an eye, it was unfortunate to see that change with just one out on his part, in the third inning with several hits they managed to make 2 more races for Beislinho to leave the diamond to be changed, that's how 2 more races and with a lot of effort I am 7-5 this great game that leaves Bolgano as the winner of series 1, but there are 3 games so the next day will be Of great importance to the standings, in Game 3, Claudio Mauro was the starting pitcher, but unlike the other 2 games, 5 runs were enough for Lisander's win, although if it was as I finish, 2-1 the series gained by Bolgano.

THE ROCKET REPORT

EARLY PROMISE SHOWN

by Brianne Henry,

The first three games for Newmanistan in World Baseball Classic 48 were obviously games that the team was supposed to win, playing against a nation that refers to itself as Teyniyji at home at the Proving Grounds in Tundra Falls. You still have to go out there and play the games, and the sky blue were able to do that well, completing the three game sweep. This will prepare them for the more difficult obstacles that await down the road, and for a team with a youthful group of hitters, that’s pretty good.

There was hope that the blend of veteran pitchers, including Hannah Lee who took to the hill in the first game, would provide leadership for the young players, and we saw that in this game. Hannah, herself, knows what it was like to be on the other end of that, having been thrust into a critical start as a teenager during the World Baseball Classic 41 title series. Nobody did it like Hannah Lee then, and she has gone to have a lot of success. She’s 35 now, and in her pre-game interview she touched on the veteran role that she has with a very youthful team. “I will do what I can to be a leader, of course.” Lee began, “Our young players are the offensive players, so I am not going to teach them how to hit a baseball in pressure situations, but I can tell them what I feel the pitcher on the other side might be thinking. They are young, but they are veterans, too. We are talking about people who are stars at home, and have extremely bright futures ahead of them. It is not as if I am here to help them swing a bat, like I said, but just adapting to the international lifestyle for a little while.” Hannah went on a little further about that, “What I was a teenager and young pitcher, I had the great Courtney Duvall guiding me. International play is different, not just for the obvious reason of the travel, but to remember that you are not on a vacation, but instead on a business trip. There’s no time for sight seeing. If a country interested you, take a vacation there on your free time. I admit that I have done that, too.”

Newmanistan won the first three games, by the scores of 6-2, 5-1, and then 12-9. Hannah Lee was great in the opener, tossing a complete game showing that despite being 35 years of age she is still as durable as ever. She had one tough inning, that being the third, right after the Rockets opened up a 3-0 advantage in the previous half inning, but once she got through that, the visitors only got one more baserunner off of her for the rest of the game. In the second game, it was Cassie Burke on the mound, trying to shed her reputation of being inconsistent at this level. If you are labeled that way, that means you are both good and bad, otherwise you would just be marked as awful. Therefore, this one great start that Burke had is not going to cure that stereotype, but it was good to see the good Cassie step up and also a throw a complete game. It was a good thing that the bullpen was not used in the first two games, because they needed to be used in the third. Despite Newmanistan jumping out to a 10-0 lead after two innings, Madison Sullivan suffered what often happens to pitchers after a sitting for a big inning, and that’s that they start getting tight and become ineffective themselves. The Rockets allowed seven in the top of the third, but were able to stop the bleeding enough to not actually blow the lead entirely, because we’re not Drawkland. We got one back in the bottom of the third, and the bullpen did the job thereafter, securing the 12-9 win, giving us the three wins in three games.

With the bat, we saw the youngsters step up pretty nicely. In World Baseball Classic 47, we struggled to score, and that would not be the case in these three games. It was nice to see them piece together the nine run inning in the bottom of the second of the third game, for sure. That’s where it will help having new faces, because they will not have bad memories of what happened last time out. Lexi Burrows, the 21-year old third baseman from South Tier, has two home runs and eight RBI’s through these first three games, and is excited about doing more this Classic. “It is an honor to represent Newmanistan and all of the great history that we have in this tournament. All of the great names that have gone before me, the privilege of wearing this uniform is that special. Winning at the Proving Grounds to start this off is a good omen, and I look forward to continuing to play more games as this progresses,” Burrows stated.

Throughout the Classic, there were some surprises in spots, and that is always to be expected here. That is why you can never take winning three against someone you were supposed to beat for granted. You have to go out and do it. And against Teyniyji, the Rockets did.

Do the Confederates have what it takes to go the whole way, this season?

Citizens polled on the streets suggest... no.
Over 60% polled, believe the Confederates' time has come and gone. The struggle to dominate will continue to decline until they wipe the current roster and fill it with new powerful players.

After a disastrous World Baseball Classic #47, the team hoped for a fantastic come back this season . However it appears that fantastic come back will have to wait as the Confederates performed poorly against Anthor.

Their only win, arose in the first of the three games of the #48 season.
At the top of the 5th, Glen Melbourne scored a home run. Short stop Kevin Dances and 3rd Baseman Jack Navy, each earned a run during the top of the 5th to bring the total runs to three.

Head Coach Julian Pancretè applauded the win, as a win. However he felt after some fanatic pre-season training and being the first game of the season, The Confederate could have performed better.
The second and third games against Anthor, showed the opposing team were not just going to lie down and lose the series.
In game team two; the game dragged out to 12 innings thst had fans on the edge of their seats.
After the bottom of the 9th both teams sat on 6 runs each. The evenly matched teams had some outstanding work by both pitching teams who kept the game going to the 12th inning before a grand slam finished the game in Anthor favour.

The third game Anthor showed they truly were the best that day with a 4-1.
Julian Pancretè said the Confederates were outplayed by a better team on the day. He knew the team could do better and extra practice had been called to work on a number of easy errors that should not have been made by such an established team in the areas of pitching and fielding.

Team Manager Jacob Prosper believes anything is possible with the World Baseball Classic. A sport where any team if they work hard enough, has the chance of their dreams coming true, by taking out a title and winning the whole series.
After the 2-1 loss, Mr Prosper said it was purely new season jitters and the team would bounce back as they always do before the Round of 16.
We have a great team, a mix of newcomers and seasoned players, winning is in our blood and we are a competitive team. We won't lie down, we just have to keep doing better.

Avid baseball fans were also shocked at the poor performance of Nova Anglicana who failed to win any of their games against Kriegiersien. This was a powerful skilled team that West Phoenicia fought hard against in previous seasons, so for them to flop in the first three games, and for West Phoenicia's own poor performance, left many who saw the two as being the teams to best in this grouping, up in the air now. It now could be anyone's game.

Bookies and gaming establishments were flush with cash, after many gamblers placed bets on Nova Anglicana and West Phoenicia for the wins only to be shocked with the losses. Walking away with lighter wallets.

West Phoenicia will face Kriegiersien in the next three games. After smashing their Nova Anglicana rivals, the Confederates are hoping Kriegiersien does not have a repeat of the same performance with them. To have any chance of progressing, they will need to take out the team in the majority of games and send this unranked team packing.
The two have met in many different sports especially at an Olympic level. So the WBC will be another match up where the two teams will meet, where anything is impossible.
The West Phoenicians have learnt alot from Nova Anglicana loss against them, and they will not make the same mistake.

Olympia Hills; West Phoenicia

"It's the poor people's fault that the Coronavirus has appeared in West Phoenicia," Martina Rose; leader of the West Phoenician Segregation Party announced at a rally held at the party headquarters in New Elysium II, in the city-state of Olympia Hills.

Martina Rose stood proudly next to the multi-storey white marble and glass building that served as party headquarters. On top of the building was a bronze statue of Caerus; god of opportunity, luck and favorable moments. He protected the building and the occupants from any harm.

Martina Rose stood behind a podium, her black hair perfectly coiffed and make-up, light and natural. Her personal makeup artist and hairdresser had worked for two hours to perfect the look before she addressed a crowd of reporters, colleagues and loyal supporters.

"Our current Right wing Coalition government is doing every possible to curb the spread of this illness. I applaud the work of our Minister of Health, the Chief Medical Officer and all those workers in the health industry which have stepped up as Covid-19 continues to ravage the world.

However my colleagues in Coalition partners and many in the healthcare industry have placed their heads in the sand over the real spread of the Coronavirus."

A young male reporter, his long hair tied back in a ponytail and sporting three day growth across his face, politely raised his hand.
An aide, hair slicked back with gel flanked the left side of Martina Rose. He whispered in her ear and she turned to the direction he indicated.
She eyed the reporter for a moment, he was from one of those left wing Socialist rags that wrote weekly articles denouncing her parties policies.
She considered ignoring his gesture to ask a question, instead she nodded in his direction, allowing him to ask his question.

"While you're not medically trained, what is your theory of the real spread of this virus which has seen 200 people now infected and 16 dead?" He switched on his tape recorder ready to record the answer.

"It's the poor people's fault that the Coronavirus has appeared in West Phoenicia. All the 200 cases have been from a lesser social rank, and all 200 have been admitted to a public hospital. No Private hospital or Platinum hospital has reported any cases. It adds weight to what we have been saying all along. The poor are a drain on our resources and now that they are being diagnosed with the Corona virus they will be a drain on our health care system."

"I assure you, this Coronavirus will not discriminate. Rich and poor around the world are being afflicted with this illness. It is only a matter of time before members of the aristocracy succumb to the same symptoms."

" The Let them eat cake Act which passed, allows for economic segregation. Because the poor can not socialise with the upper class in selected hospitals, cafes and shops, I feel we will be safe. Statistics are showing it's only sweeping through the poorer and lower middle class areas. We will continue to avoid it, as long as we practise strict social distancing."

"While there is economic segregation in a small handful of city- states. Not all city-states practise such an abhorrent policy. And those that do, may feel protected in their rich and nobility safe zones, but they fail to realise many of their servants, the waiters in the cafes and nurses in the Platinum hospitals reside in areas deemed poor and lower middle class. What will the rich do without their servants during this time, if they are too practise social distancing from the unwashed masses?" The reporter smiled arrogantly back at her.

"Anyone from an infected zone will be tested of course. We can not have our way of life affected simply because a few people have come down with a nasty case of the flu. However if it does happen our hospitals will be more than capable to give the afflicted person the four star treatments they deserve. I just hope it won't come to that. I believe our Prime Minister is in talks with the Emperor about introducing some restrictions. However 200 people is nothing to become hysterical over. If we just stay calm and turn to the gods for guidance, this issue will be over before anymore people become afflicted. In the meantime while we right this virus as a nation, we also have the opportunity to rally around the Confederates. It is the beginning of the World Baseball Classic, and what better time to come out and support our team, as they fight hard to win their next title."

"So sports will continue?"

"Sports and all other festivals and events will continue as normal. We cannot live in fear. More people die of the flu each year. Commonsense and the gods will prevail. Just be on your guard and if you are unwell, stay home. But in the meantime sports should not stop. Sports have always been a popular pastime of West Phoenicia. And right now we need to get behind out team, as we next take on Oscioru. All healthy fans need to come out and get behind the team, show the team You are fully behind them as they go out to take on Oscioru, a team we have not played before, but must destroy, if we stand end chance of claiming the title this season."

Finjhok Chang, the pitching coach for the Sherpa national baseball team, was going over some video with one of his pitchers, Luochong Zhuang. There was some scouting footage of the Lisandrian batters and also some video from Zhuang's last outing where he didn't seem to be able to find the strike zone. Chang paused the video and pointed at the screen. "Do you see the way your arm is coming out to the side here?"

Zhuang looked at the screen. He looked like he was thinking, but he didn't say anything right away. A few moments passed in silence. "Do you remember that time someone used demonic magic in the Taliban War, and it got broadcast on INN?"

Chang buried his face in his hands. "Zhuang, I know you have a lot of different interests, and your head is full of all different thoughts, but right now I'd really like to stay focused on your pitching."

"Okay, but I had an idea," said Zhuang. "You know how there are some places on the Yangtze where you can get Northern TV channels in the Sherpa Empire, or you can get Sherpa channels in North China?"

"Zhuang..." the pitching coach pleaded helplessly. He could tell that Zhuang was gearing up for one of his infamous long-winded rambles.

Zhuang went right on talking like he hadn't noticed Chang's reaction at all. "When INN showed that battle with the demonic magic, the broadcast spread the magic to people's TVs. We sent priests all over the Empire to clean it up and exorcise people's living rooms, but we didn't send them into North China. So what if people in North China had their TVs on? Like what if they were watching INN and they had demonic magic pouring out of their TV? Maybe someone in Hankou had their TV on and the demonic magic is what started the new SARS outbreak. Demonic magic can reverse the effects of vaccines. If you're exposed to demonic magic and you can't get an exorcism for some reason, you should get booster shots for your vaccinations..."

"Zhuang!" Chang tried to get his attention. "Look, I know you like science, and that's great, but it's not your job.
It's a hobby. And right now, you have a job to do."

"But if we caused the outbreak, then we have a responsibility to stop it," said Zhuang. "We should send priests to Hankou to look for demonic magic."

Chang rubbed at his head in exasperation. "Zhuang, when you're winning games, nobody cares if you talk about genetically-engineered bees all day. And I mean really, NOBODY CARES! If you're getting results, we can all just ignore the way you run off at the mouth -- but if you're giving up runs and you're rambling about magic SARS viruses instead of trying to figure out what you're doing wrong on the mound, that's a bad look. You're not a virologist and you're going to get yourself fired if you don't get your shit together."

Zhuang slumped in his seat, apparently disappointed that his theory had not sparked Chang's interest. "Okay, what were you saying about the video?"

"Right," said Chang. "See the way your arm is out to the side here?" He let the video play a few frames. "And then it comes across like this? That's why the ball's not staying over the plate. It should be more like this..." He demonstrated a pitching motion with his own arm.

Leif Holt is sitting in his office. He is happy with they way things are going so far in WBC 48. The Nordic team has won all 6 games they have played so far and they have done it with good offense and good pitching. He is happy with his decision to call in the recently retired Jon Isaksson to his pitching staff. The team has played well so far and they need to keep it up.

Meanwhile on the field, the players are going through some drills. Caroline MacWilliam is talking to Soren Vang. "Did you hear about that Coronavirus that is spreading around the world? I hope that the WBC is not affected by it." Vang turns to her and reassuringly puts an arm around her. "Dont worry, the Nordics does not have any cases of it yer. Even if it does affect the WBC it will not affect us because we are not in a group with the Sherpa Empire."

Out There, Beyond The Sea, The Battin' Jags Swing

Postby TJUN-ia » Tue Mar 31, 2020 6:13 am

After falling 3-0 in our first ever series, the team focused on tape to try a figure out a way to beat fellow unranked team Swiaji. This team we know nothing about: no player names, no positions, no DH, nothing. But it was this team, who we'll call the Mariners for simplicity's sake, went to Devonta and swept them. That doesn't happen by chance, so nothing was left out of our studies. We watched all 3 games vs the United States of Devonta and tried to figure out how they ticked. By the time we got to Swiaji, a land of mystery and fish, we had some clue on what to expect but not the full picture.

GAME 1
We scored 2 runs this game. The first, in the 1st, was a solo HR from Ki Yung-son, trying to help push momentum towards the Jaguars. The second, in the 9th, was via Harrison Kyle's double play, allowing for Joe Gregory to score. However it wasn't enough to overturn the Mariners. 4-2 final to Swiaji.

GAME 2
Swiaji scored first this time via [REDACTED]. It would be their only score of the night. Chris Harris played the game of his life, managing to find new ways to getting the batters out. We scored our first run in the 3rd via Matoko Kagawa, then scored again in the 4th via Steven Fulmer. Our 3rd run was via a HR by Rafael Llorente in the 6th. 3-1 final to TJUN-ia. We'd won a game for the first time ever. The series is tied 1-1. Game on...

GAME 3
Our only mistake was letting 3 runs in during the 2nd. He had already scored 2 beforehand, but change was required. Liam Christopher-Lee, or LCL, came into the game and saved the inning. He then proceeded to shut out Swiaji for the remainder of the game. We tied the game in the 3rd via Angel Enrique. We retook the lead in the 6th via Gregory. LCL then put the icing in the cake with a HR in the 9th. 5-3 final.

TJUN-ia has won a series for the first time. We're still in 4th in the Group 2 standings, but we're on the board at least. Next up is a big one: The Greater Nordics, the current group leaders and the 2nd best team on paper. And we've got them at Portside. Rounders Field will host it's first ever series. In preparation, the following message had been painted in the walll directly in front of the road team's changing room:

YOU ARE ENTERING THE JUNGLE

FAIR PLAY SHALL BE OBSERVED HERE AT ALL TIMES

IF NOT, THE CROWD SHALL EAT YOU ALIVE

It is accompanied by a painting of a jaguar, staring into the changing room like Big Brother. It is hoped that the message will show teams that we want to play fairly. The Free Republics were specifically targeted, but all teams will see this message during their time here.

It's time to go home. GO JAGS!

South Newlandia surprises the world, sweeps Northwest Kalactin

South Newlandia crushed Northwest Kalactin in their second ever World Baseball Classic Match, winning all three games the first time they were playing in front of their own fans.
The batters really stepped things up this time, scoring 14 runs, and the pitchers were as good as ever, only allowing 8 runs to the strong opposition. This time, Adam King (20) went on to become the hero of the match, playing great defense and scoring two home runs.

Game 1
NW 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 2
SNL 0 0 0 0 2 1 0 0 X 3
After a slow start, action started happening in the bottom of the 5th inning, when Adam King hit a great homerun to secure runs for himself and Fabio Ventura. Northwest Kalactin managed to keep the game close, however, with a run by Charles Hernandez in the 6th inning. Another run by Jake Davidson in the 6th inning restored the old gap, making the score 3-1. Northwest Kalactin got close again in the 9th inning, but they were only able to score a single run by Joe Parnell.

Game 2
NW 0 0 1 1 0 1 0 0 0 3
SNL 0 3 0 0 0 0 2 0 X 5
Fireworks started early in Game 2, as a home run by Ian Pearce secured three runs, with Adam King and Igor White getting runs as well. Northwest Kalactin came close again, scoring three runs over four innings, but a great 7th inning secured the win for South Newlandia, with Adam King and Gregor Garner scoring two more runs, making the final score 5-3.

Game 3
NW 0 0 2 0 0 1 0 0 0 3
SNL 5 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 X 6
Game 3 featured a fantastic start for South Newlandia, with two home runs already in the first inning by Adam King and Steve Ruiz. This got runs for Fabio Ventura, Gregor Garner and Jake Davidson as well, and got South Newlandia an early 5-0 lead. Northwest Kalactin fought back again, scoring two runs in the third inning by Joe Parnell and Nate Johnson, but another run by the young David Drum (18) who replaced Adam King in the last 5 innings as he seemed to have sprained his ancle, secured the win for South Newlandia, with the end result being 6-3.
This fantastic series will go down in the history of South Newlandian baseball, and the coaches can really be proud of the staff. We managed to conduct an interview with South Newlandias Batting Coach Anthony Smith-Miller, ASM for short, to talk with him about the game and its implications.

Our Reporter: This result definitely came as a surprise for the world. Can you tell us why South Newlandia is performing so well at the moment?
Anthony Smith-Miller: The simple answer is that our pitching is simply great at the moment. We have some talented pitchers in the squad, with Jacob [Jacob Conroy, 21] and Ryan [Ryan Hunter, 19] as young prodigies, mixed with the experience of Jack [Jack Miller, 26] and the strength of Blake [Blake Robbins, 23], we have an answer for everything. Obviously Damian [Damian Bolton, 35; pitching coach for South Newlandia] is a fantastic coach as well.
OR: While the batters struggled against Xanneria, they played much better against Northwest Kalactin. What was different between those encounters?
ASM: There are multiple differences. First, Xanneria has better pitchers than Northwest Kalactin. Also, the game against Northwest Kalactin was a home game, which is always a boost for the batters. And lastly, Adam [Adam King, 20; scored two home-runs and 4 runs in total against Northwest Kalactin] is a rather day-dependant player, and he performed fantastically today.
OR: Adam King missed the last 5 innings because of an injury, do you know any details? When will he be able to play again?
ASM: Adam suffered a bad hit to his ankle in the last game, and we hope it is just sprained, although it might be broken. I cannot guarantee that he will play tomorrow, but he will be back against Ko-oren [the 5th game] at the latest, I am sure.
OR: What are your expectations for tomorrow and the remainder of the tournament?
ASM: I know what you are thinking with South Newlandia on top of the standings, but I don’t see us making the playoffs. We had two easier matchups so far, the two big opponents [Ko-oren and the Equestrian States] are yet to come. I think we can aim for fourth place at very best, not any higher. But I will happily be proved wrong. As for the match tomorrow, I don’t really know what to expect. They [The Royal Kingdom of Quebec] got this upset [against Ko-oren in Series 1; QUE 2-1 KOO] and did well today [against the Equestrian States in Series 2; QUE 1-2 EQU], so they are probably stronger than we are. My personal prediction is a 1-2 against us.
OR: Thank you for taking the time for this interview.
ASM: No problem at all.

All matches:
South Newlandia 3-0 Northwest Kalactin (3-2; 5-3; 6-3)

Xanneria 1-2 Ko-oren (1-10; 9-3; 8-9)
After their weak start, Ko-oren won this time, beating 3rd seed Xanneria. Their pitching is still not where it could be, with Ko-orens pitchers allowing 18 runs.

Equestrian States 2-1 The Royal Kingdom of Quebec (1-8; 6-5; 11-2)
This is sort of the expected result, but that made the games no less exiting. The Equestrian States eventually recovered from their defeat against Northwest Kalactin, beating Quebec.

Current standings:
Group 3 Pld W L RF RA RD
1 South Newlandia 6 4 2 18 15 +3
2 The Royal Kingdom of Quebec 6 3 3 35 32 +3
3 Ko-oren 6 3 3 36 38 −2
4 Equestrian States 6 3 3 30 35 −5
5 Xanneria 6 3 3 25 26 −1
6 Northwest Kalactin 6 2 4 28 26 +2

Schedule:
South Newlandia @ The Royal Kingdom of Quebec
Equestrian States @ Ko-oren
Xanneria @ Northwest Kalactin

For their third game, South Newlandia will travel to the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, and the series will see the two best-performing teams (so far, at least) meet. We hope for an exciting match, and wish luck to South Newlandias players.

Scenario: Stafford City Stadium CEO invites wildlife expert Richard Miller to his office.

Note: If you are unfamiliar with Hampton Island, the nation is roleplayed to have an extremely high ursine population.

CEO: Mr. Miller, thank you coming in on short notice.

Miller: It’s my pleasure to be here, what is it that you want to discuss?

CEO: We are in a situation about Midnight, the bear that is a part of our World Baseball Classic team and has been for a while now. He often seems sluggish and disinterested now, making us worried that he might be too old to be playing but none of us know how to tell how old he really is or at what an age a bear started become too old to play baseball.

Miller: Well I can assure you, sir, that there have been no studies done to determine the right ages for a bear to retire from professional baseball because it is entirely unprecedented. Midnight, himself, is remarkable. You’d almost think he was sentient. I will say that I have been watching the World Baseball Classic games and think Midnight is fine. He has had two home runs in the last three games.

CEO: I am grateful for the home runs, but as long as Midnight makes decent contact with the ball, with his strength, it’s going to leave the yard. His strike out has increased a little too, but the biggest issue is in the field.

Miller: Why don’t you have Midnight be the designated hitter?

CEO: I was told that we do not do that because he gets bored in the dugout while we are not at the plate and will just run out on the field no matter what. He is used to being instructed to play the field now, so if we play someone else there, he will still try to take his position.

Miller: I see. What is it you would like for me to do then? Determine his age, I could do that. However, I cannot tell you if he would be too old to play baseball. I could only suggest if he is at an age where a bear might be in old age.

CEO: I would like you to find another Midnight.

Miller: That will be impossible, sir.

CEO: We have millions of bears in this country, surely we can find another one that knows how to play baseball. Find out if Midnight has any brothers or sisters that might have inherited the same uncanny ability.

Miller: It is completely impossible to find out now if Midnight has any brothers or sisters. The only option could be to try and mate him and hope a cub inherits his ability.

CEO: Mate him, huh? Then maybe all of his cubs have the same talent, then we can field a team of bears instead of just having one.

Miller: I don’t think it work out like that, but Midnight is a rare animal, so I should not rule it out. After all, I would have entirely ruled out the notion years ago that we could train a bear to learn the rules of baseball. All I can say is try to mate him and hope for the best, but we might want to do it like horse racing does it.

CEO: Get a bunch of females in here?

Miller: Yes, but remember that horses retire before they become studs. Since Midnight is playing baseball and not a race horse I think it can still work with him attempting to breed females on off days, but that is a product for the off-season.

CEO: Get the females!

Miller: That is much easier said then done. The female is more aggressive then the male. It’s like, say, Cassadaigua.

CEO: We can give them a large plot of land. They can be tranquilized in the wild and brought there. I am sure it will be difficult, but I will give you the resources to do it, and I own land all over this island that we can do it.

Miller: We could. There is risk in that, but we could.

CEO: Get the people to do it. So we can get Midnight breeding them while we are at home.

Miller: This might not work. It’s more likely not to work then for it to work.

CEO: So there is a chance. So we will try it. Let’s begin the process.

Miller: Very well.

Now that the Sarzonian national baseball team sat at 2-4, Geoff Yancey was now focused more strictly on his baseball responsibilities.

The fact that he renewed contact with his longtime friend Khalil Dennis and Khalil's husband Calen was terrific. It meant that a majority of the feeling of something being missing was gone.

He wasn't going to do everything exactly the way his onetime boss did, and that was OK. The Stars struggled on offense even with the designated hitter in the lineup, but back to back game-salvaging efforts brought shutouts. The Stars, for the most part, were pitching well.

Their bullpen let them down in the first two games of the series against world No. 6 Sherpa Empire, starting with the opening 2-1 11-inning defeat. The bullpen held the door closed in Game 2 even though fifth starter Brian Lynch left the game with two outs in the fourth inning after he twisted his ankle trying to cover first on a grounder to first baseman Cody Frazier.

An MRI after the game was negative. He said he felt "awesome" the next day and is expected to make his next scheduled start.

Mark Conroy gave the bullpen a desperately needed day off after it worked 5 1/3 innings in Game 2 and four innings in Game 1. He allowed just three hits, walked two and struck out 12 in the complete game victory.

The Stars will face Bolgano, the 29th ranked team in the world after they dropped two out of three to an unranked Capcom team that surprising sits in first place in Group 5. Fortunately for a struggling Stars offence, the Bolganans also use the DH.

The Stars are in last place in the group, which isn't necessarily surprising, even if the details about how they got there might be. However, Yancey preached taking each day as it came.

"We have one job to do," he said. "And that's what we're focusing on."

Northwest Kalactin Gets Swept By Unranked Team

Northwest Kalactin 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 2
South Newlandia 0 0 0 0 2 1 0 0 X 3

Game 1
Everyone in the Northwest Kalactanian locker room was excited ready to beat on the weakest team in the group, South Newlandia well they thought they were the weakest team. In the third and fourth innings of the game there was not a single hit there was almost nothing going on except for a pitchers duel between Rob Lewis and the South Newlandian pitcher. That was until the fifth inning, Adam King hit a home run to drive home himself and Fabio Ventura. Charles Hernandez though, hit a double to put himself in scoring position and then Adam Felix drove him home on a hit to right field. The next inning the South Newlandians struck back with a run by Jake Davidson to put the South Newlandians Up 3-1. Joe Parnell ended up hitting the last run for the Kalactanians in the ninth inning.

South Newlandia 0 3 0 0 0 0 2 0 X 5

Game 2
Following the loss to South Newlandia in the last game the Kalactanians wanted revenge as they were embarrassed by an unranked team last time. That being said though it didn’t start out very well for the Kalactanians and they gave up 3 runs in the 2nd inning on a home run by Ian Pearce. The Kalactanian team got back at them fast though with 2 runs in the next 2 innings scored by Charles Hernandez and Mike Harbano. Following a scoreless inning the Kalactanian team tied it back up on a solo home run by Jake Brown, later in the inning though the south newlandians ended up putting up 2 runs to make the final score 5-3.

Northwest Kalactin 0 0 2 0 0 1 0 0 0 3
South Newlandia 5 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 X 6

Game 3
Game 3 did not start well for the Kalactanian team, after 2 home runs by Adam King and Steve Ruiz the kalactanians we’re down 5-0. After that the Kalactanians took matters into their own hands scoring 2 runs with Nate Johnson and Joe Parnell. Then the South Newlandians scores off of a somewhat wild pitch by pitcher Jimmy Bennett, Jimmy was not having a good game. The coach went out to the Mound to go put a reliever in where Joe and Jimmy were already talking soon the entire infield was there, coach Joe had no idea what was going on until he heard yelling. “Your trying to blow this game come on Jimmy!.” He heard Joe yelling that to Jimmy and soon Joe punched Jimmy... the rest of the game was a bit average for the Kalactanians scoring 1 run and giving up none nevertheless tension was high in the locker room after the game, people got the news that Joe would not be joining him after the tournament and Jimmy was punched so hard he would not likely be joining them either.

Gold Coast Court Room, Parnell Vs. Bennet
“Jimmy Bennet has sued Joe Parnell $5,000 for assault and damages.”
“Well the defendant please speak.”
“Well, I believe that I did not assault Jimmy because it was only 1 punch I also did it during a fight were we were yelling at each other.”
“Okay now Mr. Bennett’s attorney please speak.”
“Joe assaulted Jimmy because he punched him very hard, he also did mental damage to Mr. Bennet and left him out for the entire WBC therefore I believe he should be convicted of assault.”
“Okay, jury time to vote.”
“The results have came in the Jury finds Joe Parnell GUILTY of assault.”

Home series goes adequately,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

There was much fanfare scheduled at the Dagan Airways Stadium for the home opener of the 48th World Baseball Classic for the Cassadagan national team, but it would never be delivered. They opened up with two wins in three games in Imperial Joseon, and now were hosting The Sarian. Not much is known about that nation’s baseball team other then their #28-ranking, and any scouting material that may have been picked up on them from their opening three games. However, a lot of the pre-game festivities that were planned before the opening game were cancelled due to a strong morning rain and windstorm, however that would subside after causing a 52-minute rain delay from the planned start time.

Kayla Mason was able to get her warm up throws in, but had a hard time finding the plate in the first inning, something that is pretty unusual for her. She walked the first two batters The Sarian brought to the plate, and then was not helped when Cassie Daniels booted what should have been a routine 4-6-3 double play to help out her pitcher. Instead, the bases were loaded with no one out, and without The Sarian even managing a hit. Two sacrifice flies from Sarian batters ended up scoring two runs as the wheel of tagging up batters was in motion on each fly out. Then, finally, The Sarian got a hit in the inning and that accounted for the games third run. Mason got out of the inning but was not happy with herself after self inflicting issues on the mound. Her teammates chipped away at the deficit in the second and third, but the rains came again after the third inning, causing a 74-minute rain delay. Mason was still in the game when it resumed, which was a surprise to some, and it would not be a happy ending. She hung a slider to a Sarian batter in the fourth, who made her pay, and now it was 4-2, and that was quite frustrating to the fans in attendance that had waited out the next bout of rain. Mason was taken out of the game after the fifth, but Cassadaigua was never able to get anything going, and were simply out of sync for this game. It finished off what was a disappointing opening game at the stadium, with all of the festivities being washed out, and what ended up being a little over two hours of actual rain delay time, combined. After the game, Mason told us, “It obviously was not meant to be. I know we had a much different vision of how today was supposed to go, starting with all the things that were scheduled for the fans, and then I mess it all up in the top of the first inning. That’s baseball, but when it’s the first home game of the World Baseball Classic, it’s hard to swallow.”

The rain was gone for the second game, although the grey clouds in the sky never seemed to go away. On a gloomy day, several of the festivities that were scheduled for the opening day were taking place, so fans still had that going for them. Celebrities and other sports figures not otherwise busy at the moment were on hand to celebrate, as well as some previous members of the World Baseball Classic teams. There was a strong wind throughout the day, but it was blowing in, so it while it would potentially wreak havoc on outfielders, it could be favorable to the pitchers. And that is exactly how things played out with Desiree Plummer and the Sarian pitcher with an unknown name as their roster has not been publicly revealed, were each effective. For Cassadagan batters, they were able to make contact, but it seemed as though they kept hitting right to the fields. Plummer was more effective with nailing down strike outs as the game moved on, and on. Scoreless after six, the wind played a role in the seventh when 22-year old right fielder Tori Coufal missed played a fly ball and had it get by her for a three base error. The Sarian followed that up with another sacrifice fly, and it was 1-0, and stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth. This time, the wind was favorable to us, with a similar error impacting them, leading to Rachel Kessler getting on second with no one out. Three singles and a double later, the Fillies had scored three in the inning, and 3-1 would be the final. This time, the fans would go home happy.

Finally, the third game saw clear skies and Samantha Owens return to the mound, and she was brilliant early in the game, despite allowing a third inning run. Still, fans were starting to whisper to the friends sitting next to them about how they need to start hitting better. Finally, a breakout. And wow, was it ever break out. In the fourth, the Fillies would score eight runs, sending 12 batters to the plate, with three home runs hit in the inning (Macy Hamel, Cassie Daniels, Danielle Trufant). It was an eruption that this team really needed, not that they have been playing badly overall, but the home fans wanted to see the team score more. The Fillies scored three in the fifth, and were up 12-1 at that point. We stayed at 12 runs until the eighth inning, when the team decided that they were not happy with the eight run inning and wanted to do even more then that. This would result in a nine-spot being put on the board, with Cassadaigua setting 12 batters to the plate again, and hitting three more home runs in the process. (Macy Hamel, Cassie Daniels, Jordyn Prosser). For the game, Cassie Daniels was 6-for-7 with three home runs and had 9 RBI’s! She told me afterwards, “It’s a great stat line, but the important thing was just getting this win. I am glad we did not let up here, because as an offense, I know that we felt we could be showing more to our home fans then we have, so even in the eighth, it was just a case of not caring about running up the score, and just doing it. This series started roughly for us, but finished with a bang.” That it did, and there is still plenty more to be played. In the World Baseball Classic, you never know when you might need run differential help, so there is no running up the score at any time, anywhere. If you don’t need the runs in the game, you might need them later in the event of ties.

After six games, Cassadaigua is 4-2 and tied for first in the group, but it is very tight overall. We’ll see where this goes from here.

Sweep/Countersweep

Samantha Maxwell, Londinium Courier

The Nova Anglicana Lions national baseball team's story so far has been a tale of two sweeps. First, the Lions played unranked but dangerous Kriegiersien on the opposition's home turf. It was (mostly) a disaster, with the Lions rallying then losing, taking a lead and then losing, and just plain falling behind and losing. A three-game sweep that had manager Orlando Murray publicly talking about "rust" and "respect for Kriegiersien" while sources in the locker room said that he was apoplectic. If there was a silver lining, it was that the Lions had only been outscored by five runs in the three losses and had held their opponents to three runs twice in three games. Still, the early signs were anything but encouraging and many wondered if this was a harbinger of things to come. After all, the Lions' first three series were against the bottom teams in the group; if they couldn't handle these teams and get off to a good start, it would be incredibly difficult to make the playoffs.

So as the Lions came home to take on 46th-ranked Oscioru, winners of 2 of 3 against unranked Daskel, and holders of a 6.7 runs/game average, the mood was grim. These were must-win games for the Lions to get back on track. Enter Erik Russell. Russell, a high leg-kicking, all sorts of pitch-throwing lefty, drew the assignment of breaking the losing streak and restoring the Lions' mojo. And did he ever. He used a cutting, sinking, running, tailing fastball for 70 percent of his pitches, and completely baffled the opponent. And it was efficient too, using just 96 pitches to get twenty-seven outs, scattering four hits and walking none. In the United States, they have a term for a sub-100 pitch complete game; it's called a "Maddux", after the famed Atlanta Braves pitcher Greg Maddux. Russell only struck out six, but he didn't need to. Run-scoring hits from Jake Bryan and Casey Wheeler, among others, were more than enough in the 5-0 win.

Fresh off the win, the Lions delivered an early knockout blow in game two of the series. Following a 1-2-3 first inning, Jake Bryan drew a walk to lead off the second. Matthew Gilbert singled to put runners on first and second, and Jerome Duplantier drew a walk as well. Up comes Marc Dufors, and a high chopper was more than enough to bring one run home, though Dufors was thrown out. But the Oscioru hurler walked Trevor Goodwin, eighth place hitter and catcher, to load the bases once more. Looking for any kind of out, the opposing pitcher made the mistake of throwing a middle-middle fastball to pitcher Hank Jackson. Jackson's a good hitter for a pitcher, and he won't miss those kinds of pitches. A two-run double made it 3-0, and Tommy Moran followed with a double of his own to make it 5-0. Luke Mills completed the trifecta with a run-scoring double and the Lions had a commanding 6-0 lead. The Lions later added a run on a Duplantier solo shot in the 5th, and while Oscioru did manage three runs on the back end of the game, it wasn't nearly enough.

Game three began shakily for staff ace Cory Sharpe, as he needed 42 pitches to get through the first two innings, yielding three runs. But fortunately for him, the Lions tallied four in the bottom of the first on a Jake Bryan grand slam, then put up eight in the fourth to really break the game open. Sharpe went six innings, allowing four runs, and long reliever Aaron Spencer pitched the final three for the save. Bryan finished with six RBI on the day, and seven position players had at least one RBI as the Lions righted the ship in impressive fashion.

Now 3-3, the Lions are tied with fellow high-ranked team West Phoenicia for third place in the group. Kriegiersien stumbled, losing two of three to the Confederates, but are still tied for first. Anthor has been the leading team in the group so far, taking two of three from West Phoenicia, and beating newcomers Daskel in two games out of three. The Lions will take on Daskel next, who are fielding a U23 team. But the youngsters have been competitive, losing two of three to Oscioru by just one run on aggregate, and losing two of three to Anthor by just three runs on aggregate. The Lions could really use a sweep to boost their fortunes and propel them back into the top two, but winning the series is a definite must. It won't be easy; Daskel has shown a lot of spunk, having already played two extra innings games. But their bullpen does appear to be vulnerable, as they let Oscioru score eight runs in the last three innings en route to a 12-10 loss, and Anthor put four runs up in the eighth, rallying from an early 4-0 deficit and a late 5-4 deficit to win 8-5. Let's hope Daskel's bullpen woes continue, and the Lions' own pitching stays solid.

Terre Septentrionale wins the series against the Free Republics

Trzebiegoszcz, Pomerania - After being swept by The Greater Nordics, the Nordiques received the Free Republics at home in Trzebiegoszcz, the 3rd largest city in the nation. Alejandro Gonzalez, Kyleigh McLaughlin and Rusty Castillo were the starting pitchers for Terre Septentrionale while Gioacchino Arcuri, Ming Hsing and "Wild" Ralph Fiedler were pitching for the Republicans. Terre Septentrionale won the 1st game 5-3. The score was 2-1 Reprezentacja Nordycki in the bottom 8th inning when Garrett Strzelecki hitted a double that sent both Stefan Boissonneault and Szandra Szucsanszki to the plate. The next batter, Katarina Radovnikovic, walked and then Keegan McCullough hitted a single that sent Strzelecki to the plate and the score was 5-1 Terre Septentrionale. With leading by four, Zoey Kjerstad pitched in top 9th inning and she allowed two runs. Terre Septentrionale won 5-3.

Terre Septentrionale was leading 4-3 at the top 9 inning but the Republicans tied the game at 4-4 and we went to extra innings. Free Republics took the lead in the top 12 inning and the Northmen tied the game when pinch hitter Zlatan Belec hitted a solo homerun. The Republicans finally won in the 14th inning.

LP: Greg Wloczewski (0-1)
BS: Keegan McGranahan (in 9th inning)
BS: Kiyosumi Takeuchi (in 12th inning)
S: Ecio Saucedo

Then on game 3 of the series we had a pitching duel between Rusty Castillo and "Wild" Ralph Fiedler. Castillo only allowed 1 hit and 1 walk and had 13 strike outs in 9 innings. Fiedler allowed 3 hits and 1 walk and had 14 strike outs, also in 9 innnings. Both pitchers played a complete game. The winning run was scored in the 4th ining when Melanie Wojciechowski scored on a sacrifice fly by Gustavo Mendoza.

WP: Rusty Castillo (1-1)
LP: "Wild" Ralph Fiedler

Terre Septentrionale is now in 4th place tied with TJUN-ia but they has a lowest run differential. Next is a 3 games series on the road against Devonta. National Stadium, Stafford City, Hampton Island
Leading up to the Hapilopper/Hampton Island series
All things considered, the first two series for the Hapilopper National Baseball Team had been enormously disappointing. Theoretically, the team should have rolled over the unranked teams in the first two series, but found themselves dropping two games to the Pripet Socialist Republic, and dropping a game to a nation interestingly called “Democratic Publicity Stunts.” Following those first two series, the Haps found themselves 3-3 and third place in the group, trailing Hampton Island and Abanhfleft.

And, oh yeah, the Haps were going up against Hampton Island for this next series, a team they were worried about for multiple reasons, but most specifically that damn bear, Midnight. The pitching staff, huddled around a television screen, were watching videos from the last Hampton Island games, and decided on a strategy for several of the Hampton Island players, including Midnight, for when they came up to bat.

“I don’t know about you, but I’m walking Midnight,” said Cale Waller, who was scheduled to start the first game of the three-game set. “Anytime he comes up to the plate, fuck it, I’m going to intentionally walk him. He makes contact with that ball and it’s going into the parking lot.”

“That’s not a bad idea,” said Mill Gibbs, who was not scheduled to start in the series. “I seem to recall that bear knocked a few out of Capital Stadium a couple of years ago. Like, over the top decks and shit. Just put him on base and get the next guys out. No sense letting him bring in multiple runs when we don’t have to.”

While the pitchers were agonizing over the bear, the fielders and hitters were out on the field taking part in batting practice. Jerome Hayden was in the batting cage, trying to impress everyone by hitting the ball about as far as he could, while other players were milling about waiting for their turn. Leroy Hunnisett and Campbell Braxton were conversing between each other, noting with some frustration some of Hayden’s showboating.

“Look at this,” Leroy said. “Jerome’s booted more than a few balls in the infield and yet all he cares about is blasting one into the upper deck.”

“Yeah, he needs to practice more out in the infield rather than try to impress the babes,” Campbell replied. “Actually kind of pisses me off watching this.”

On three occasions in the PSR series and once during the DPS series, Jerome had botched the throw to second base, and in an inning where there would have been two outs in one play, all the runners were safe. Jerome wouldn’t hear a thing of it after the game, even going so far as to accuse Campbell of being out of position every single time.

“Next time he accuses me of being out of position, I’m gonna punch his lights out,” Campbell said to Leroy. “People already look at me funny because of how I hit, and now he’s saying I can’t field? I practice the double play pivot every single god damned day and he’s saying I can’t do it?”

“He’s just looking for excuses, Braxton, don’t let him get to you,” Leroy responded.

Jerome was continuing to be an annoyance, looking back at Leroy and Campbell.

“Hey guys, this one’s for you!” he shouted, as he smashed his bat against the next pitch, sending it spiraling into the air and into the seats in left field. “Think we’ll win with hitting like that?”

“Yeah, if you can do the double play right,” Campbell shot back.

“HEY!” Jerome snapped, walking out of the batting cage and towards Campbell. “That one’s not on me and you know it! You need to make sure you’re in position to get the out!”

Jerome then turned around to see Dayton Rowe having snuck into the batting cage. Dayton had been waiting for about 20 minutes for the cage to open up to get some swings in, and with Jerome throwing a fit at Campbell, this was his chance.

“I wasn’t done in the cage, you dimwit!” Jerome yelled at Dayton.

“Yeah you were,” Dayton responded without missing a beat. “My turn, asshole.”

“You’ve got to learn to play nice, Jerome,” Leroy said. “Seems like you’re getting a bit of an ego, and it needs to stop. We’re not going to win anything with your head as inflated as that. You need to practice out in the field more than you need to practice in the batting cage. We can’t afford to miss double plays like that. I know it and you know it.”

THE ROCKET REPORT

VICTORIES MOSTLY CONTINUE

by Brianne Henry,

We haven’t played anyone yet, but through six games, Newmanistan is doing quite well with five wins. As you can only play the team on the other side of the field, we’ll be happy with that start and hope that it can be useful when we do start playing more well known opponents. Chromatika will be the next opponent and they check all the boxes for being well known, but that is primarily because of soccer and college basketball. It as if the organizers decided to do as a favor, and before anyone talks about a conspiracy theory, do know that there is a great chance of Newmanistanians being taller then Drawkians then them wanting to do us a favor (see, basketball rivalries), the schedule works out well for a team with a young offense. Start out with three games against a weak link at home. Then give them three against the other wink link on the road. Then, with those tests pass, we’ll give you an opponent with a little more pedigree, and you can have them at home. South Covello, ranked 25th, is on the road, before we host Liventia to get us to the halfway point.

You never know what to expect in the World Baseball Classic, and the look of this group is not exactly what we thought it would be after six games when seeing the order of the teams below us. Mostly, I am referencing 1-5 Liventia, who just got swept at home by South Covello. Both of those teams have history in this tournament, but South Covello recently has not made their presence known in the Classic, and their best days were really when they were lead by a tyrant. Here, they are 5-1, so it begs the question was that sweep a product of a South Covello resurgence or a Liventian struggle? Will that even out in the end? I think we have to be happy to have a four lead over Liventia at this point, but there is plenty of baseball left to be played. Then, don’t out Chromatika here. They are 4-2, so if this series against them in Pocono City goes south, then we may be looking up at both South Covello and Chromatika, and we really don’t want that.

In the first game against both Brooklyn and Queens, the Rockets started the game putting up three runs in the top half of the first, but that would not hold up. In fact, they would not score again for the remainder of the game as the opposing pitcher showed impressive resiliency. If the ENBL teams could only know what his name was, then perhaps one of them would have been interested in taking a shot at him, bringing him from whatever obscure league he pitches in at home, and bringing him into Newmanistan. For the Rockets, Paige Norwood was good on the mound for the most part, but needed to be a little better. The second game of the series saw the sky blue play a more complete game, and give WBC rookie Kelsie Carmichael early run support, but more then just the three runs. Kelsie ended up going seven, as manager Ashley Hedstrom did not want to push her luck any further in order to keep Carmichael’s confidence high for future games. After all, her next start will be the opener in South Covello, and that will be a huge contest. Newmanistan took game 2, 7-2.

In the final game of the series, nobody did it like Hannah Lee, who tossed a complete game shutout after flirting with a no-hitter through six innings. The 35-year old already made a statement in her first game that choosing her to be part of the team was the right decision, as she has tossed a complete game in each of those outings, posting a 1.00 ERA. She allowed two hits in the game, and none were in the first six innings, and struck out thirteen in the process. While Hannah has not said this will be her last Classic, many seem to think that it will be, so if it is, then kudos on her for making the most of it in this way.

As I have said, next up for the Rockets is Chromatika, and the notoriously inconsistent in the Classic, Cassie Burke, opens up the series. She was outstanding in her first start, so the pessimistic fans might be a little concerned about this one. Madison Sullivan and Paige Norwood pitch the final two games of that series, and each of them will be looking to redeem themselves after a tough start. Sullivan got a no-decision and Norwood a loss. Looking around the Classic, two teams are a perfect 6-0, but that can be deceiving as some will have easier schedules them others. Abanhfleft, who have not played either Hampton Island or Hapilopper yet are one of them; and the other is The Greater Nordics, who are still waiting to take on Free Republics. I look forward to seeing you all in Pocono City for these next games.

OOC Disclaimer- This and any future RPs with the WBBL in it have taken place, ICly, one year before the World Baseball Classic. That, and on the Banijan timeline, the WBC runs on a 3 year cycle.

Western Banijan Baseball League set to form with 8 franchises confirmed; Player Draft Details announced

Image
Kamoyo Chikondi, the head of Banijan Baseball, explaining his vision for the sport

ISTRIA, MORAVICA- The Western Banijan Baseball League has been a long time coming. Of course, we've had to sit here and wait quite a bit for it. And even when it was supposed to happen last year, the first year after the World Baseball Classic. But alas, starting brand new professional sports leagues takes time, and Chikondi, with a number of investors on the fence, made the prudent decision to delay the other part of his lifelong dream- creating a truly strong professional baseball league.

When we came to you last year, the plan was for this to be a ten team league. Teams spread out through Moravica and Kitara. But plans were forced to change. When one investor who was going to bring forward a team suddenly died, via a heart attack, they had to put things on pause. It happened not that long after the World Baseball Classic- about a month later. But finding a replacement investor proved difficult. Not everybody was convinced that baseball was here to stay, despite the national team's stunning championship at WBC 47.

And then, another investor withdrew, while a 3rd decided to switch cities. That left us with the number that we have now- 8. How is this league going to work? Well, it is fairly simple. This is an 8 team league- no divisions, no conferences, just 8 teams together. Each team will play each other 12 times- six games at home, 6 games on the road, for an 84 game season. Opening Day will be in June, and the season will end in September. At the end of the season, the top ranked team and second ranked team will enter into a best of 3 Championship Series. The top ranked team will host all 3 games, as a nod to them finishing top.

Let's go through it, shall we?

Player Allocation- Draft

There will be a three tiered draft system. First, of course, there will be a strict salary cap, and to protect the league's financial viability, they will ensure that teams do not compete against each other for salaries. Every player without any major international experience, defined as game time for any country in either the Olympics or the World Baseball Classic, will get a base salary of $70,000 NSDs. Any player with international experience will get a base salary of $100,000 NSDs. And then, of course, the league will have uniform bonuses for certain statistical markers- home runs, strikeouts, any sort of stats.

And, of course, the draft. The first tier will be the International selection. The WBBL searched far and wide for international players, and a number of players from both Ko-oren and Hapilopper, some with international experience and some without, will be part of the international selection. The draft order, of course, shall be random, and it will be a snake draft style. That will go until all the international players are drafted. Then, the second tier will be Banijan national team players. Players who were on the Banijan national team for WBC 47 will enter through that tier. And then, lastly, the third tier will be the 'rest.' Banijan baseball players from all over, from the college system, from the amateur system, from wherever. This is what we'll be covering.

The Teams

Of course, none of these teams have rosters yet. So there isn't much of a profile on them. But we'll give you the barebones of the 8 teams- their cities, their names, their stadia.

Format: Team Name - City, Region - Stadium (Capacity)
1. Istria Bengals - Istria, Moravica - Istria City Baseball Diamond(capacity of 41,000). Capacity reduced to 20,000 for all but 'big games'. Stadium shared with Istria Bengals.

2. Rukunbi Patriots - Rukunbi, Istria, Moravica - Istria City Baseball DIamond(capacity of 41,000). Capacity reduced to 20,000 for all but 'big games'. Stadium shared with Istria Bengals.

3. Kitara Athletic Association - Sisonke, Kitara - Sisonke RTC Field(Capacity of 23,091). Same organization as BSL side of the same name.

4. Herzegovina City Brawlers - Herzegovina City, Moravica - Northern Moravica University Baseball Diamond(capacity of 17,999).

5. Kosactus Mud Hens - Kosactus, Moravica - Eastern Moravica Credit Union Field(Capacity of 13,838).

6. Iziarad Flyers - Iziarad, Moravica - Iziarad RTC Field(Capacity fo 15,492).

7. Busembe Rams - Busembe, Kitara - Vawhine Park(Capacity of 19,840).

8. Busukuma Athletic Club - Busukuma, National Capitol Region(Coterminous boundaries) - Capitol Region Field(Capacity of 18,137). Same organization as BSL side of the same name.

That's the big things! We've gone through the format, the teams, the draft. Next, of course, we'll come with our coverage for the most anticipated rounds of the draft- the International Selection, and then the Banijan national team draft, to see which players go where. You've got to be excited for this one, eh?

Coronavirus Sweeps across P.S.R.
It was 2:00 PM in the governments meeting room in the capital city of Èntland in the Pripet Socialist Republic and the government was debating what to do about the new Coronavirus. Many doctors and government officials were crowded in the room.

“We only have about 300 people infected so far and 250 are in the town of Lutka if we can keep cases down there we should easily be able stop the spread of the virus.” Said chief surgeon Paul Alexander

“So do you think I should order a citywide lockdown there.” Said the Premier

“An entire city on lockdown might be a bit harsh, they have an entire 31,000 citizens there so just cancel schools for 2 weeks there.” Replied the Cheif Surgeon

“Okay that sounds good, now regarding the virus do you it will spread quick enough to transmit to more people.”

“Umm, it spreads fast but if we stop traveling to North China and the Sherpa Empire we should be fine.”

“Okay and how do you think this virus compares to the Pripetan Flu from 17 years ago.”

“We should be fine the Pripetan Flu killed almost 80,000 people and it had a 15% death rate. Also this virus only has a 2.5 percent death rate and it mainly kills the elderly.”

“Okay so what should we tell the public?”

“Tell them not to panic and to wash their hands.”

“Okay I’ll go and tell that to them right now.”

And as the premier went out to address the public a man in a suit came rushing in he delivered news to the government that an entire airplane of people heading into the P.S.R. Had just tested positive for the virus, and that they were set free before test results came back.

In the West Phoenicia vs Oscioru, the results leaned in West Phoenicia's favour. 6-4 and 6-2. Even though it was an away game, where the number of West Phoenicians in attendance were far less than their competitors. The fans who made the trip, made up for the outnumbered atmosphere with loud boisterous catcalls of support for the pitchers and batters, with faces painted in the team colours of light purple and orange. While from near the dug out the Confederates Mascot and Cheerleading team did their best to whip up the fans

Against a team ranked 46th, it was considered a cakewalk by West Phoenician sport pundits and Confederate coaching staff, that they could easily dominate their rivals.

"We have never played Oscioru, all I know is we have to beat them to stand any chance of climbing our way to the top three in our pool which currently has Anthor in the number one spot," Jacob Prosper announced during a radio interview.

A complete 3-0 win was on the cards, but game three surprised all who watched when the typical 9 inning game went into 14 innings. It was a low scoring game, by the bottom of the 6th, both teams sat on 5 runs apiece. It would take 8 more innings, before either team broke out and scored.
Eight long extra gruelling innings, that had even the devoted of fans, yawning and secretly begging for the game to end.

In this case it was Oscioru who broke through the tough pitching of West Phoenicia, to smack the ball out of the park, scoring a home run at the bottom of the 14th off a fast pitch by Ashwyn Sid.

Ashwyn Sid who had been pitching for the last 5 innings, claimed exhaustion on his part that allowed their opponents to sneak in a home run at the bottom of the 14th, that allowed Oscioru to gain the upper hand and take out the third game. But for fans in the bleachers, it was their opposition who got a second win, and were able to take advantage of the Confederates Head Coach from replacing a tired pitcher.

West Phoenicia will next take on Nova Anglicana, it's a match up, which both teams are hungry to win. Domination in these three games will set the tone for the rest of the games up to the Round of 16, and give a clear indication as to whether either of these teams will progress.

Team Manager Jacob Prosper has conformed there will be no changes to the roster or line up, in their matches against Nova Anglicana

West Phoenicia to close borders and reduces flights

With the rate of the COVID-19 growing rapidly in West Phoenicia, with cases surging over 900, the government has stepped up actions in battling the virus. Emperor Glenton Gryphon-Bush II on advice from government and health officials, ordered the Prime Minister to the Imperial Palace to authorise the move that will see West Phoenicia close its borders for the short term within the next few days, in an effort to reduce the virus from spreading to other nations. The measure will hopefully restrict sick people from other nations infecting any citizen of West Phoenicia and also stop sick West Phoenicians from spreading the virus to other nations.
However the government has announced certain travel will continue, that being government business and travel for sports teams.

While not all flights will be cancelled, on advice from Senator James Chapperaux; Minister of Science, Aviation and Innovation. Flights leaving and arriving will decrease in number to curb the spread. Any passengers arriving will undergo quarantine for 14 days to ensure they are free of infection.
The government hopes the decrease in flights and the quarantine will help keep people in their jobs in the aviation industry, and keep foreign citizens spending in the nation.
The Emperor has advised major changes will be implemented if the number of infected does not stop. National borders between states and a full grounding of all flights is also on the cards as a possibility.

However Opposition Leader Gai Prestonia, of the West Phoenician First Party and Shane Taylor,
Minister of Sports and Recreation has slammed the government for allowing the West Phoenician baseball team The Confederate to continue their home and away games. While restrictions will be implanted within the next week, the opposition believes it is foolish to allow their national baseball team to travel, and to allow other international teams to travel to West Phoenicia for games. It's too great a risk which could see the number of cases grow.

Prime Minister Countess Tia High, said the situation is being monitored. Any fans or players who appear to be sick, will be restricted from leaving the country. And any fans and players travelling to West Phoenicia will be tested and if found positive will be isolated. While these are dangerous times, it is not a time to overreact, we do not have to change every way of our life, there are ways to contain the Coronavirus without destroying out way of of life. The Confederates will continue to play baseball and continue to inspire the nation. The gods of West Phoenicia will protect them.

South Newlandia gets another win, beat The Royal Kingdom of Quebec 2-1

South Newlandia won their second series in a row when they beat The Royal Kingdom of Quebec in Quebec. Adam King was able to return after his injury, and after two of the games were decided in extra innings, he and his team claimed 2 of the 3 games played against the favourite. Adam King personally played another great game, getting an early home run and three runs in total.

Game 1
South Newlandia 3 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 5
The Royal Kingdom of Quebec 1 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 3

South Newlandia started great when they scored three times already in the very first inning. The third batter Adam King got the team in front with a home run, which also got a run for Fabio Ventura. After that, Jake Davidson was able to get another run, making the score 3-0 already. Quebec fought back though, and were able to get a run in the first and third inning, making the game close again. In the 5th inning a great play by George Webber achieved a run for Steve Ruiz, and in the 7th inning, a freak home run by pitcher Jack Miller made the score 5-2. In the last inning, Quebec scored one more run, but they were not able to catch up in the end. The final score was 5-3.

Game 2
South Newlandia 0 0 0 0 2 1 0 0 1 0 0 2 6
The Royal Kingdom of Quebec 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 2 0 0 0 0 4

The second game started slowly, with no real action before the bottom of the 4th, when The Royal Kingdom of Quebec went ahead with the first run of the game. Right after that South Newlandia got the bases loaded with one out, and were able to convert this into two runs, scored by Adam King and Gregor Garner. The 6th inning saw another run by South Newlandia, with Fabio Ventura getting his second run of today’s series. Another run by Quebec made the score 3-2 after six innings. The tide shifted in the Bottom of the 8th, when Quebec scored two runs suddenly after a mistake by pitcher Blake Robbins, allowing a home run. This meant that South Newlandia was down a run, and they had to score in the 9th inning. Luckily, they did so, with George Webber getting a run after a double by Fabio Ventura. The game went to extra innings, and the 12th inning was the decisive one. With Igor White and Gregor Garner getting runs, the final score was 6-4 in favour of South Newlandia.

Game 3
South Newlandia 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 0 2
The Royal Kingdom of Quebec 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 2 4

The third game was another slow one. Action only started all the way into the 8th inning, when a home run by Jake Davidson secured a run for him and Adam King, making the score 2-0. As South Newlandias fans already hoped for the second sweep in a row, Quebec crushed those dreams when they came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th. This meant that the game would go into extra innings as well, and Quebec was able to secure the win in the Bottom of the 11th with a home run, scoring two runs.
Nevertheless, South Newlandia got another strong win against a team considered strong, and while the batters weren’t exactly at their best again, pitchers Jack Miller, Blake Robbins and especially Jacob Conroy did a fantastic job again, holding Quebec to 11 runs in 32 innings total.

All matches:
The Royal Kingdom of Quebec 1-2 South Newlandia (3-5; 4-6; 4-2)

Ko-oren 3-0 Equestrian States (8-2; 4-0; 4-2)
Group favorite Ko-oren is finally on track again, sweeping second seed Equestrian States. The pitchers of Ko-oren finally were where they needed to be, holding the opposing batters to just 4 runs in three games.

Northwest Kalactin 3-0 Xanneria (10-6; 5-1; 2-0)
Everyone was unsure what to expect of Northwest Kalactin after they beat Ko-oren in match one, and getting swept by South Newlandia in the second. They were able to bounce back today, sweeping Xanneria. Maybe they are just stronger at home games.

Current Standings:
Group 3 Pld W L RF RA RD
1 Ko-oren 9 6 3 52 42 +10
2 South Newlandia 9 6 3 31 26 +5
3 Northwest Kalactin 9 5 4 45 33 +12
4 The Royal Kingdom of Quebec 9 4 5 46 45 +1
5 Xanneria 9 3 6 32 43 −11
6 Equestrian States 9 3 6 34 51 −17

Schedule:
Equestrian States @ South Newlandia
Ko-oren @ Northwest Kalactin
The Royal Kingdom of Quebec @ Xanneria

South Newlandia’s fourth game will be another home game with the Equestrian States coming to Elephant Valley. The Equestrian States performed poorly so far, but they are still the second-best team on paper, so this is going to be a decisive game for both teams already.
