NationStates College Football - Season 21

Breathe deep and take it all in as the tubas' rumbles reverberate through all the iconic campus stadia again. Each one, packed with generations of alumni returning to partake in the traditions of their beloved alma mater, is ready for that combustion of kinky action. The poppin' aromas of molly-popcorn and beer sift out through the bleachers. The bright lights shine down on armoured teams battling under the night sky, school bragging rights and a gruelling summer of work on the line. Ah, yes. It's college football season. Glory, Drama, Pride.

The twenty-first edition of NationStates College Football is upon us. In this thread, you will post your team's roster and all in-character roleplays. These can be game reports, character dialogues, or really anything you like. Any out-of-character questions should be directed towards the discussion thread or telegram.

With numbers staying the same with 36, there will be six conferences and each will have six teams.
12 teams will make the Playoffs: the six conference champions, the next best four by OSPI and, finally, two wildcards selected by the NSCF Committee. These 12 teams will then be seeded in the bracket purely by OSPI. Higher seeds will have home advantage until the final, which will take place at a neutral venue. Any nation can put together a bid to host the NSCF Championship (IC only) before the start of Non-Conference week, when it will then be voted on by the NSCF Committee.

New and returning players alike are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the NSCF procedure here. The regular season will be double round-robin, for a total of 10 games. Games will be scorinated three times a week: on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Scores will be posted in this thread at a time determined by each conference's designated scorer. After the ten-game conference schedule, there will be a "Non-Conference Week", with each team playing up to three games against opposition from other conferences. These games will not count toward conference championships, but WILL affect playoff seedings. All Non-Conference games must be arranged by the teams playing them (you can use the discussion thread for this). Once confirmed by BOTH parties, match-ups should be telegrammed to NSCF to be added to the schedule.

In addition to the playoffs, there also a few consolation bowl games for teams that do not reach the postseason. If your nation proposes a bowl game to host, you are responsible for inviting the teams yourself if it does not have automatic parameters for selection. The Pioneer Bowl is a traditional game for the two best newcomer teams not in the playoffs. After that, NSCF will not recognize any bowl game involving a team with an OSPI below 0.450.

Offensive Style: Richardson tends to direct their plays from the I formation, only adopting the shotgun when they have a combination of the obvious need to pass along with a dangerous, veteran passer behind center[ex: John Garrett, Ifeatu Chineze]. They adjust personnel and schemes according to talent, but will generally run at least one tight end, often two, and feature the run game while heavily utilizing play action to open up deep shots down the field. Big, burly, powerful offensive linemen, more power schemes than zone.

Defensive Style: Richardson generally has at least one elite cornerback on the roster, and they love putting that corner on an island. Generally, that corner will be good enough to completely eliminate a team's top wideout, [note: Jabyess Hawkins, this year's top corner, isn't quite at that level]. Doing so allows the team to roll coverage away from that man, making everything else tighter. Up front, the team tends to let its top-notch front four wreak havoc, rarely blitzing unless, like with the shotgun in the offense, they have a prolific, game changing inside linebacker or safety. Ifeatu Chineze, QB: After holding the offense back last season, Chineze appears to have turned a corner. The Q put the team on his back in the domestic season, with 4,105 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions. The team’s explosive offense was forced to drag a sieve for a defense, but they still managed to make a playoff run.

Calvin Hale, WR: With Kieran Kweo-Atkison gone, Hale stepped in for a fluid transition as the WR1. The wideout secured just over 1,100 yards and ten scores.

Vice Jackson III, RB: Grandson of RFL and RCF great Vice Jackson, this runner didn’t quite match his sophomore production, which he amassed 271 carries for 1,290 yards and 12 touchdowns. This more ‘modest’ season, if you can call it that, saw 239 carries for 1,065 yards and eleven scores, with 41 catches as opposed to 50 from a year ago. Part of that was Chineze’s Improvement allowing HC Richard Steinheil to get back to the more explosive passing that he prefers, but it could also be attributed to his running mate...

Kuenda Sello, RB: Out of Banija, Sello is a bruising, downhill runner who will punish anyone who dares to step in his path. A year ago in the domestic season, he tallied 162 carries in the domestic season and piled on 680 yards and five touchdowns. This year, he earned 180 carries...and rewarded the faith his coaches showed, plowing on for 775 yards and four scores. Last season, he got just 37% of the carries, and that number jumped to 42.9%.

Spencer Crutchfield, DT: Crutchfield is an absolute freak. Coming in at 6’7”, 315 pounds, he’s a monster in the run game, and has a bull rush that he’s built an entire pass rush arsenal off of. Crutchfield managed 7 sacks against Ranorian competition..

Howie Peters, T: Peters was a top 20 recruit at left tackle, and quickly made a name for himself by earning a starting role as the anchor of the offensive line, protecting Ifeatu Chineze's blindside. Howitzer Peters is a more than capable protector who fits Richard Steinheil's mold of a powerful, massive offensive lineman perfectly.

Thrane Valentine, T: Valentine, was the #309 overall recruit in the nation to Howie's #17, and quickly took up a spot manning the right tackle position. At 6'4", 300, he's a big kid with a lot of raw power, perfect for a run blocker. Now that he’s filled out his frame at 305, this offense looks vicious on paper.

Malik Sherman, DE: Sherman is a versatile DE, who, along with Crutchfield, is a captain of this team. He and his DL partner accounted for a combined 5 sacks in the last five minutes of one score ball games, helping to bury Richardson’s opponents after their offense took the lead. Sherman had 11 sacks total.

Offensive Style: Cold Hill is a pass-first, air raid, quarterback centric team offensively. They neglect to run even when they are in an obvious winning position, with the rare exception of top-talent running backs. They prefer to keep the game in the hands of the quarterback, featuring plenty of deep vertical and post routes for their athletic wideouts to eat up opposing corners alive on while their quarterbacks, with characteristically strong arms, push the ball down the field. When they do run the football, they feature a power scheme that allows a big offensive line to do its thing.

Defensive Style: Base 3-4 Defense. Outside linebackers serve primarily as edge rushers with very rare drop backs into coverage, while big defensive linemen clog up the interior. Typically an emphasis on pass rush, and it isn't rare for the team to rush five men on the line of scrimmage. Scheme features a lot of blitzing, particularly from cornerbacks, and relies on linebackers to soak up tackles while the front men key on the passer.

A team made up of recently graduated players who don't want to say the sport goodbye, but also aren't done with their academic careers. As they turn from undergrads to postgrads, they aren't allowed on the D-league (Development League) teams anymore - and that is where the Professors come in. The universities that host a D-league team have joined forces to allow their players to keep playing while pursuing their postgrads. Younger players are almost always given priority on this team, so most will be 21-22 years old. This is both because they are most likely to turn pro, and because the older players are more likely to concentrate fully on their studies.

A lot of gaps had to be filled, and the scouting apparatus was in full swing early on in the season. It's very hard to evaluate university players given there's no university-only league, and players are only expected to go professional after having played on the Professors (or not playing for the Professors at all), but the idea is that the roster is again full of players that aim to continue playing the sport after university.

Like every team that's made up of Ko-orenites from all over the country, this team is slightly defensive. The offence is somewhat experimental, with loads of unorthodox (and risky) formations. Nearly every play can be run from nearly every formation (at least, that's the philosophy), so plays and routes are remembered as a combination of [formation]+[pre-snap movement]+[post-snap play], making it all pretty flexible. There will be single wings, there will be lots of players lining up close to the offensive line. The backfield shouldn't be very crowded most of the time. The defence is tactical, intelligent, and are taught to be great communicators. Pressure can come from everywhere, linebackers are universally decent-to-good in coverage, so even safeties and corners can safely blitz every now and again.

As for the institution itself, Université du Saguenay (official known as Université du Saguenay à South Bend) is considered one of the best universities in Quebec, in particular for its undergraduate education. While excellent across the board, Saguenay is in particular renowned for its world-renowned Cavani School of Business, Lawrence A. Gong School of Architecture, and humanities programs. The university is also renowned for the need-blind admissions policy, as well as its ability to meet 100% of a student’s demonstrated financial need- something that only 5 Québécois institutions can proudly say so.

The university's unique culture, that promotes both the scientific knowledge and religious education, results in the school and its alumni network (only rivalled by St. Croix and Farrer) having close ties to the Québécois elite, in both Saguenay province and those in Montreal the economic capital and Quebec City the artistic and administrative capital of Québec. The Sagueneen elite of both Catholic and Buddhist denominations, seeing the need of a classical institution in Saguenay without having to travel to Québec City, built UdS in considered the capital of Quebecois traditional culture and folk traditions in 1792. Since then, Université du Saguenay has been a centre of Quebecois Religious Thought and also the Quebecois Thought. Atlantian Oceania is a region notable for its centrist political scene with penchant for hereditary power, and Quebec is among them, for its leftist leaning is partly contradicted by long history of purging republicanism - with the most recent purge happening just eight years ago (2034). This thought has partly influenced the Fighting Irish to stand out, as UdS and the Saguenay province are considered the baton of Classical Quebecois Conservatism.

The NSCF 21 is an exciting one for the Saguenay Fighting Irish, as they aim to continue from where they left off three seasons ago. The Tiger Bowl championship season we saw in the fall was particularly memorable, as they dealt with long list of variables and had to watch in roller coaster ride as their star quarterback Ian Lautner and upperclassmen receiver corps. More often than not they had to help out the Irish defence who suffered injury bug all season long and barely showed the full extent of its starpower back in fall. Still, this Irish team is still expected to aim for the second straight Woodlands Conference Championship and maybe upset other NSCF powerhouses they have failed to beat so far. This may be a spring season where putting it all together, a rare issue in a wave-driven Baek era, may be the most important part of all.

Within the Saguenay NSCF staff we have seen some changes, even as the main mantle remains fairly similar to 3 yrs ago. Most notable factor is the departure of defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Hugh O'Neill in past January. The 39 year old, who was regarded as one of the finest defensive coordinators in Quebec, was appointed as the head coach of Meghanville State University Broncos, immediately after the Tiger Bowl win. In place of O'Neill will be defensive line coach Patrick Boies, who has also carved a name for himself very well, but the transition is expected to take some time as well. An additional note is given to Lev Chen-Gazdanoff taking over for Hunter McTavish, who was appointed as offensive coordinator for Mount Ester in February. The St. Croix alumnus, long familiar to Big 10 fans for his fourteen years with Northwestern program, is expected to have little trouble adjusting to his new position after taking the fall semester off due to career burnout. Starting June, he will also be taking over as the recruiting coordinator for the program from special teams coordinator Yunesky Munoz, who held the position as an interim when Mikael Nill-Aubin resigned to tend to his dying wife back in last September. Nill-Aubin, whose wife has since recovered, is expected to return to the academics commissioner for the athletic department.

The Fighting Irish recruited well last offseason, continuing to focus on nationwide recruiting. The highest rated recruits in this class were wideout Edward Lessard-Park, centre Miguel Viñas Budi and defensive end Jean-Simon Resnais. Lessard-Park, given the lack of a flat-out clear number two and three receiver options this season, saw a lot of minutes while centre Miguel Viñas Budi, widely regarded the #1 recruit of his class, saw marginal playing time but played very well when backing up Frederick Kang on odd snaps. 'I get that many of us are frustrated at not seeing Miguel on enough snaps, but that's, to be fair, mostly because Fred's a 3-year starter who's also 2-time all-Quebecois,' Offensive Line coach Chun-Kim said. 'In most teams you'd see any of Laurent-Martin or Miguel starting all 12 games. We should see a healthy competition for next year though.'

Barring odd circumstances, Jean-Simon Resnais, the son of the highly-regarded high school coach Laurent Resnais, is also expected to start next year on the right side of the defensive line. Among defensive rookies, he saw the most snaps and was well ahead of Lalonde-Kwak or Gagnon on counts. His fundamentals, already considered among the best in the team, is something that his positional coach, defensive coordinator Patrick Boies, salivates over: 'Right now what we have is a good project. He's a little slower and isn't as agile when off rush right now, but he's already there technique wise. As long as we get the conditioning up to the level expected, we should see a three-year starter.' Coach Boies responded with delight.

What is also memorable about this Fighting Irish team this spring season is that they will be seeing fourteen starters don the blue and gold for their final run, meaning that for many of these guys, better performance is expected than three years ago, when only 8 (including O'Rourke the Long Snapper) graduated and 3 freshmen started for the national champions. For some positions they will have no problem replacing their starters, with trio of Lessard-Park, Carson-Corbin and Koo ready to replace Welch and Song on wideouts, as well as Corbeil-Goulet and Woo who have seen lots of time in rotation with Biakabutuka and Hong on defensive line. As for others it will be difficult, most notably on middle linebacker, where Heo Myeong-Shin is expected to be drafted to hometown Kingston Blue Jays in June, left tackle guarded by two-time all-Quebecois Marcel Ethier, and Leopold Langlois-Zuluka's side of defensive coverage. Fortunately the running game and the Lautner-Taylor splash brothers being back on offence should help the Saguenay team moving forward in an exciting direction. 'We'll miss these guys, but what else can we do?' Coach Baek said, 'That's how college football works- it's just part of life man.'

Head Coach: Lance Kabuye. 58 years old. The Head Coach is in his third season at Northern Moravica. Being hired in what many would describe as an 'awkward situation' in the beginning- the previous coach, himself fired, who then maneuvered his own way to being Athletic Director, and picking his own successor. Many coaches would not have done that, but they have a great AD-head coach relationship, and the results cannot be argued with. In each of Kabuye's first two seasons, they went to the NSCF Championship Game, with the school defeating Richardson University of Ranoria in the NSCF 19 Championship Game, and getting back to the title game in his second season as they fell to Cold Hill University.

Kabuye was the head coach of Wild Valley University, a smaller school in the eastern part of the Moravica region, for 6 years. He is innovating offensively- with former offensive coordinator Kawsu Banuma deciding to take a head coaching position at Kizza I College domestically, Kabuye is looking to ratchet away from the spread. They've always been traditionally more of a pro style school, but with Kabuye's comfort with the air raid, alongside Chae Heung-Kim, they innovated the offensive around their star quarterback. Now they will look to be a more traditional Northern team and build from the trenches. While they are inexperienced at the skill positions, with a new starting quarterback, running back, and wideout, they return 4 of 5 starters on the offensive line. They will look to dominant defensively this year, while taking far more snaps under center than they did a year ago, and use a lot more of the option run game.

Offensive Coordinator & Assistant Head Coach: Idirissa Ouattara. 61 years old. Kind of an out there hire. He was quarterbacks coach at Northern Moravica in NSCF 12 and NSCF 13 under Horace Browning, before he was offered an offensive coordinator position at the University of Ankole in domestic play. He was coordinator there for five seasons (domestic equivalents of NSCF 14-18) before becoming a head coach at Hangaza Tech. His head coaching career was disastrous- he was a poor culture fit, and was fired after just two seasons. He has always been big on the zone read running scheme, and Horace Browning suggested the hire to Kabuye shortly after the old offensive coordinator decided to go be a head coach on his own. They will install their new offense.

Defensive Coordinator & Assistant Head Coach: Longcan Gassama. 56 years old. The former Northern Linebackers coach has been promoted to defensive coordinator before the start of NSCF 19. IT was an interesting hire, as the head coach was expected to bring along his defensive coordinator from Wild Valley, but that man ended up staying to become the head coach out east. That said, Gassama is a capable coach, and his job is considered safe here in Northern Moravica. With the emphasis switching this season from their more high octane attack to a more traditional Northern squad of dominating in the trenches, the pressure is on Gassama to see if he can put a top ranked defense on the field once again.

Special Teams Coordinator: Edrissa Niang. 67 years old. 3rd year as Special Teams Coordinator.

Retired numbers: #4 Pelias Patras. Set the national collegiate record for passing touchdowns in a career(95), and school record for passing yards in a career(9,977). Is the only quarterback in school history to start every single game for 4 years. Only quarterback in school history to beat archrivals Loyola University-Istria 3 times in a row(coinciding NSCF 1, 2,3). Went to three straight national championship games(coinciding NSCF 1, 2, and 3) and won two national championships(coinciding NSCF 1 & 3).

Rivals: Currently the biggest rival of Northern Moravica University is the University of Loyola-Istria, who the Cougars have played at least once a season the last 55 seasons. All-time, they have played 81 times, with Northern holding a 43-38-2 edge in the series over their archrivals. These two teams have long been seen as the top two college football teams in Banija, and indeed, their stranglehold over Banijan college sports has continued, as they dominate not only in football, the biggest collegiate sport, but most other sports as well. When it was discussed for which team should debut Banija on the world stage for college football, it ultimately came down to these two, and after heating exchanges of words between both Athletic Directors and School Presidents in public, and the Mayors of Istria & Herzegovina City, the Banijan College Sports Group(BCSG) decided on a 11-8 vote to send Northern. The two schools played a thriller in the NSCF 18 quarterfinals, a matchup won by the Blue Thunder. With Loyola's incredible postseason runs in the NSCF, they finally regained the upper hand in this rivalry when they downed Loyola-Istria at the Istria Lightning Yard in the NSCF 19 semifinals, en route to their first ever NSCF title.

A former NSCF rival is Vietussia Academy. They have played a number of games against Vietussia Academy when both schools were members of the Celestia Conference. They play each other for the Golden Axe, and they will be renewing their rivalry in NSCF 18, as they took a hiatus after the Banijan schools left the NSCF after NSCF 14 and Vietussia Academy was not playing upon their return in NSCF 17. The rivalry is considered dormant, as Vietussia Academy is no longer in the NSCF.

Their new foreign NSCF rival are the Salamantic Universities. The Salamantic Universities pulled off a major victory at Mugisha II Memorial Stadium last season, which was the key in preventing Northern Moravica from earning a fourpeat of conference titles. With them competing in the Celestia Conference, the rivalry is expected to grow. While school officials from both have discussed an 'unnamed trophy' to be at stake whenever these two teams play, people are not sure what the trophy will be called, although students from both sides have unofficially named the trophy the 'Trophy of the Ancients' since the matchup is Cougars versus Professors. While Northern Moravica administrators were clear to say that was not the rivalry trophy's official name, with the lack of an official name, that has been the name tossed around by various outlets discussing the new rivalry.

Entrance: There is a unique stadium entrance at home games for the Cougars football team. A starting senior on each side of the football stands outside the tunnel, each one holding the school flag. They stand opposite each other with the flags lowered, and then raise the flags and let the entire team run through. After the team and staff runs through, those two starters run to the middle of the field and each plant their flag on the logo, signifying that this is their home field, and that they will fight to defend home field.

Championships: Northern Moravica has five Celestia Conference championships in 7 NSCF seasons, winning the conference title in NSCF 12, NSCF 13, NSCRF 17, NSCF 18, and NSCF 19. They won their first ever NSCF championship in NSCF 19. They finished as runner-ups in NSCF 20.

Championships: The Loyola-Istria Blue Thunder have an incredible NSCF postseason record, being 13-3 all-time in the postseason in this competition. In NSCF 13, they won the Pioneer Bowl, and in NSCF 14 and NSCF 17, they won the NSCF championship, posting a 3-0 and 4-0 record in those two postseasons, respectively. In NSCF 18, they made a run to the NSCF title game, only to fall to Mar Sara Tech. In both NSCF 19 and NSCF 20, they lost semifinals on their home field, falling to Northern Moravica at home in NSCF 19 and falling to Cold Hill at home in NSCF 20.

Individual Accolades: They have racked up individual accolades during their time as a member of the NSCF. Their big foreign rival is Richardson University of Ranoria. The young rivalry has developed quickly, as the teams compete for recruits off the field and championships on it. In NSCF 17, Loyola-Istria travelled to Richardson University for the first game of this rivalry, and lost a very close battle. But in the return in NSCF 18, Richardson University came to Busukuma, and defeated the Blue Thunder at the Stadium of the Restoration. The return was another close battle between the two schools, losing an instant classic in overtime in Ranoria. This rivalry is called the Rebel's Cannon Bowl, and is traditionally contested on the final weekend of the regular season. This season will be the fifth edition of the game. All four of the games have been won by the home side, with Richardson winning in NSCF 17 and NSCF 19, while Loyola-Istria emerged victorious in NSCF 18 and NSCF 20 in what has quickly become one of the NSCF's must see international rivalries.

Head Coach: Oromo Wakeyo, a 51 year old Banijan, is in his 3rd season at the school. The school, of course, is officially affiliated with Twelver Islam, and he is a member of the faith- a rarity for someone in the Busoga Islands with no Busogan ancestry to speak of. But that's how it is. He, of course, helped the school dominate the incredibly weak BICSA(Busoga Islands Collegiate Sporting Association) competition, and was a big advocate for the move. He said that for the football team to survive, this would be exactly the type of challenge they'd need, against top tier competition.

He has an offensive coaching background. Most of his history as a coach, of course, is not from the college ranks, but from the professional. When he stopped being a running back, he coached for various teams in the Grdirion Football League of Banija, before becoming the Dukuma Dragons Offensive Coordinator for 3 seasons. After a coaching change there, he wanted to get to the college ranks. He brings a professional mindset- Instead of trying to get fancy and sling it out, they like to get back and use movement to confuse opposing defenses. While they do not use their fullback often, his West Coast offense emphasizes the use of tight ends, and they run all sorts of two tight end sets, bringing in truly massive tight ends that cause all sorts of matchup problems.

On defense, the 4-3 defense is highly aggressive. This season especially, he has a bunch of returning starters on the defensive side, plus the emerging blue chip talent from Chromatika at defensive tackle. He will try to protect his widly inexperienced secondary by bringing pressure, and lots of it. Now, of course, there is talent back there- but there isn't a single member of the secondary who has made a start at the collegiate level before. It will be interesting to see how they hold up.

Ranorian College Football Class IV National Championship Game

4th Quarter, 7:53 remaining in the game

"Alright folks, here you have it! Down 28-19, It's now or never for Richardson University! A second interception from Cold Hill quarterback Deondre Rhine has put this Governors offense on the field at the opposing 33 yard line, and we should be expecting some fireworks! Chineze has been dominant all season long, with 37 touchdown passes coming into this one, but he's failed to notch a single score tonight. For those who are just tuning in, running backs Vice Jackson III and Kuenda Sello have hammered in a pair of scores, while kicker Nillman Johnson has gone 3/4 on kicks tonight, with two field goals and a missed PAT.

On the other side of things, Deondre Rhine may have turned the ball over twice, but he's also cleared 410 yards with four scores already. To say that he hasn't done his part would be nothing short of blasphemous."

That was all well and good, but Ifeatu Chineze hadn't come to Richardson University to hand the football off 30 times a game. He looked to the sideline, gesturing, in very obvious fashion, to take a shot for the end zone. His confidence had grown sky high this season, and he'd played well enough to warrant the trust that Richard Steinheil had placed in him. So, when he got the call, the Banijan native tightened the glove on his left hand, ready for the snap.

Of course, Calvin Hale delivered. Gabriel Haberkorn, Cold Hill's top corner, was average at best, and had been burned multiple times tonight already. One could say that this had been coming all game long. Richard Steinheil was notoriously wary of calling curls and comeback routes, and to call the latter in the end zone was bold, to say the least. But Hale ran right past Haberkorn, stopped at the very edge of the field, and turned back to the corner, snagging a ball that was perfectly placed and dragging his feet on the near corner of the end zone before falling out of bounds.

A crowd that was largely neutral went ballistic. The play would be going on Hale's draft highlight reel, this year or next, without a shadow of a doubt. He'd humiliated Haberkorn just before making a gorgeous play on the ball to get his team bacl into the game at 28-26.

As tight as the game was, though, the real storyline was Cold Hill head coach Chris Dale's suspension. Sexual misconduct allegations led to the university placing him on leave months prior, and he still hadn't returned. Without his steady head to level him out, star QB Deondre Rhine had been picked off a whopping 22 times, 24 including this championship game. He managed to avoid that on the following drive, answering, at least, with a field goal, but the momentum, now 31-26, was starting to shift, and Chineze had finally found his groove. The next drive took just four plays, all shots down field, three to Calvin Hale before big tight end Austin Jackson snatched the ball out of the air for a touchdown to finally take the lead with just two minutes and fifteen seconds left to play.

31-33 was the score as Deondre Rhine stepped up. 435 passing yards and four scores, he'd certainly done his part, but he wasn't done yet. He had two returning recievers from a season ago who had displayed freakish athleticism as freshman. And now, Dexter Slaughter and Rodney Blades took over.

Blades hauled in the first two catches, traversing 55 yards, before Dexter Slaughter turned on the Jets on a go route. Martin Summers, at corner for the Governors, was a sound assignment guy but most would be suprised if he ever ran a sub 4.5. So the 27 yard touchdown, leaving the game with one minute and one second, was almost expected. It had been a risk to blitz and go man coverage, and they'd paid the price for it. Deondre Rhine himself ripped off his helmet, flexing his free arm. He'd put on a historic performance, with 507 passing yards and 5 scores against just two picks, as well as an apparent walk off touchdown.

The Buffalo were now up, after he threw in a two point conversion, 39-33, with just one minute and one second remaining.

Chineze took the bait though. He knew he couldn't match the statistics that Rhine had thrown up tonight, but he planned on giving the media plenty to debate in terms of who was the better quarterback.

His first toss was a screen to Vice Jackson on an interesting play design that saw him and backup Kuenda Sello on the field at the same time. Both runners were right around the 240 pound mark, and Sello made full use of that size, blasting both a linebacker and a defensive back to help Jackson get out of bounds on a 27 yard scamper. Another screen, this one more uniform, saw him pick up 11. And with that, they were within striking distance. The last half of the fourth quarter had been wild, and Chineze made it even more insane when he dialed up Calvin Hale once more, this time in double coverage, not that it mattered.

The coverage was good, a bracket executed nearly to perfection, with Haberkorn watching underneath and playing aggressive while safety Zacharius Rosin, earner of 4 INTs this season, over the top. The ball had to be perfect, or it would have been a game ending interception. Of course, Chineze had never struggled with accuracy, or arm strength. As such, Hale caught the pass in stride, arms cupped in a basket, and almost didn't seem to realize he had the ball before barreling ahead, dragging his defenders seven yards on momentum and sheer willpower for a 58 yard touchdown.

Again, the crowd was jubilant over the excitement. 40-39, in a game that had been 28-19 just six and a half minutes ago, per the game clock, was unheard of. Their fervor only intensified when a bumbled return left Cold Hill with the ball at the one yard line.

Deondre Rhine, never one for a quiet scene, added to it with a 53 yard bomb to Rodney Blades to push his squad all the way to the 43 yard line. A field goal was still completely out of the question, but he was having a night to remember, even as he breathed heavily from a combination of nerves and excitement.

560 yards, five touchdown passes? He could go #1 overall tomorrow.

At least, until the next play. Going for it all as the clock expired, the quarterback dubbed 'Diamond' Rhine let it rip, and this time fate was not in his favor. He overshot his tight end, Dorian Brown-Clarke, by ten yards, and Richardson's free safety, Carter Coleman, capitalized. Two seconds remained on the clock when he picked off the final pass of the game, and by the time he sprinted towards the sideline, ball clutched tight, it was over.

Tomorrow, pundits would be questioning what could have been for a Cold Hill squad had Chris Dale not been suspended. But for tonight, Richardson University had taken their crown as the undisputed best team in the country.

NSCF makes a return to Gleason

The University of the Commonwealth football team will open up play for NSCF XXI at home against Temiscouata Tech hoping to get off to a fast start ahead of the games against University of Space and the Terrestrial Acclimatization Academy, who dealt UC their only two conference losses during the last season.

The Warriors enter this fourth season in the Mineral Conference with a perfect 15-0 record at Gleason Field against league opposition. Like this opener, most games that have occurred during the three previous editions of NSCF have been early evening or night time kickoffs, which some feel has been a factor in the impressive streak; the rarity of night home games during the UAC season adds more credence to the theory that the atmosphere and crowd involvement provides a more hostile environment than it does to regular domestic opponents.

The UC offense, which was inconsistent through much of last year's 7-5 Metro campaign, will look to improve behind the same group of skill position players that were the opening day starters against Northern Baker Park, but only played together again in two other games due to various injuries. RB Charles Lamar missed 4 starts with ankle problems, his backfield partner CJ Pickrom missed the final 7 games following a separated shoulder and WR Hunter Coleman missed 5 games in the middle of the year with a strained quadriceps muscle.
QB Christopher Fox missed one start after a concussion, leaving only WR Lamin Kah as the sole member of the group not to miss time due to injury. The Banijan junior once again terrorized the defensive backs of the UAC in spite of lacking for help, averaging 133 ypg to lead the country. The one benefit of all of missed starts was that several backups got snaps that helped them to make improved over the course of the 12 game slate.

The line was also a bit banged up, but the combo of C Charles Hinton, G Brian Kiley and James Allison, and T Jack Kramer and Zach Sharp was the unit that solidified by year's end.

On defense, UC had a host of issues that revolved around slowing down opponents running games. Both ends, Juan Felix-Ramirez and Austin Main, were frequently benched in favor of Saquon Gaylord and Mark Woods, while tackles Kyle Julich, Davon Hill and Demond Hutchinson had on-again, off-again spells of decent play.

The linebacking corps did as well as possible under the circumstances; Brett Luchesne and Darrick Green on the outside and 1st Team All-Star Willie Jordan alongside Noah Wetzel in the middle, were forced to make a lot of tackles. In the secondary, Jordan Bailey and Xavier Johnson had excellent seasons playing corner, while Keyshawn Hailey and Daniel Burton sometimes didn't seem to be on the same page as their outside mates.

Lucas McGuire made 14-18 on FG's although his longest was only 49 yards, while Anthony Frazier was All Metro Conference and 3rd in the nation on net punting with 39.5 yards per kick.

Where 2 Banijan Schools, plus the Islamic University, are now competing in.

Loyola-Istria and Northern Moravica Previews

Let's dive right in! Week 1 is coming up. And it's about previews. Now, of course, I could pore through the depth chart- but that'd be boring. Now, of course, I'm going to be critical. I'm a proud alumnus of the University of Moravica. We're not the greatest gridiron school- but we're pretty freaking good at basketball. If you ask me, the kid from the rural University of Moravica, how I felt about our region's big city schools, I'm sure you wouldn't be surprised to hear that I don't like both of them. I dislike Northern slightly more, as we're both public schools, but eh, it is what it is. Let's talk about Loyola-Istria first. They've lost semifinals at home in the last two years, one against their hated rivals, Northern Moravica University, who were the eventual champions, and the other against Cold Hill University, who were also the eventual champions. Let's talk about this. The road to a NSCF title goes through Loyola-Istria. Don't believe me? Let's take the last 5 seasons they were in NSCF. NSCF 14? They won it. NSCF 17? They won it again. NSCF 18? They lost the championship game to Mar Sara Tech. NSCF 19? They lost the semifinal to the eventual champs, NMU. NSCF 20? They lost the semifinal to the eventual champs, Cold Hill. There's no way around it. The road to a NSCF title goes through Loyola-Istria. And it'll go through them again, as they won the Celestia last season and are the #1 overall team headed into this season.

Now, they've got to replace players. After having the one year transfer last year almost lead them back to the promised land, they're getting young at quarterback again. They've got some blue chip talent in there, and right now, it looks like Amazu Chibuzo, the former five star recruit, the third year sophomore, has won the job out of camp. Their inexperience at the position can't be understated- none of their three quarterbacks have ever thrown a pass at the college level before. But Chibuzo has the arm talent. Loyola-Istria has always wanted to spread it out and attack teams downfield, and they are going to do so this year with Chibuzo. With Chibuzo, they have a potential three year starter on their hands. He's got a big arm, and he has the legs. This is top tier college football- the next guy up always has talent, and that's true for Chibuzo. But Alanso Isa isn't married to him- I imagine that if he needs to, he would feel free to pull the plug, in a way he wasn't able to his first two years as the head coach. There are weapons all around him. There are 3 senior receivers, as well as Khalil Hauptmann. There are 9 upperclassmen starters on offense for the Blue Thunder, and Chibuzo is one of them- the other being Khalil Hauptmann. This offense will certainly be entertaining. But the schedule will not be forgiving, though we'll get to that later.

Next, of course, Northern Moravica. They've had the better of the run out of the two coastal schools recently. Back to back appearances in the NSCF championship game, beating Loyola-Istria at the Istria Lightning Yard in NSCF 19. They're clearly the better of the two Moravican schools right now(though tell that to a Loyola fan and see how they react). They've got to do what Loyola-Istria had to do last season- replace an all-time great talent. Chae Heung-Kim was a three year starter at quarterback, and boy, the Quebecois quarterback did all kinds of things. He is, as of the beginning of this season, the only Northern quarterback to win a playoff game in the NSCF. Came in as a starter, as a freshman, and immediately was making a difference. They brought in Lance Kabuye and a new offensive coordinator to redesign the entire offense around him. They did the most non-Norther thing ever- run an air raid. And he delivered Northern fans what they desperately wanted, especially after Loyola-Istria started winning them- he brought them a NSCF trophy.

Now they've got to replace the superstar quarterback. They had, by all accounts, an extremely close quarterback competition. All the way through Spring, and then through fall camp, Lance Kabuye refused to name a starter. But the first depth chart has been released, and Mokti Dikot, the former 5 star recruit, is listed atop the depth chart. But everything's changing at Northern- they're going more for a more traditional offense, despite their success with Chae Heung-Kim. "Kim was such a special talent, we had to design the offense around him." Kabuye said. "But Northern has always had a strong, power running game, and we have the personnel to do that this year. Let's go back to a more traditional offense." And they certainly will. While they are being more tight lipped about it, they are looking to line up under center much more often, and even line up in the pistol quite a bit. Dikot really has the legs, and 4 of 5 members of the offensive line are returning starters. Look for them to try and dominate opponents at the line of scrimmage when they get started.

Rest of the Celestia

This is shaping up to be the strongest Celestia Conference we've had since Banijan schools have joined the NSCF. Of course, in NSCF 12, Northern Moravica won the Celestia in their first season, and never looked back- Banijan schools have won the conference every season we've competed in it. That's 7 conference titles for Northern(5) and Loyola-Istria(2) in that time-span. But now, that record is under some serious threat. Of course, there is the return of the Salamantic Universities. Not since the Vietussia Academy blew it in NSCF 14 has there been such a threat to end the Banijan duopoly. And that starts with the Salamantic Universities. They had a strong season last season, only falling to the Banijan schools. But they've geared up, and are going to come back. They've got a ferocious defense- one that the Northern teams of old would be jealous of. They're some sort of a coalition of universities, rather than a single school- but they gave us a run for our money last time.

Then, of course, you got Academia Politechnica Civitas Soria, out of Lisander. Led by the Rozan brothers at quarterback, they're the defending national champions of Lisander. A very left-wing school, and an old school, it is steeped with tradition and talent. They look likely to give the Banijan schools at least some quality games. And last, but not least, the Islamic University. Who would have thought this would happen? Absolutely wild. They got rid of college football as a sport on the Busoga ISlands because the Islamic University was so dominant, and so they decided to go to this competition. Of course, I don't like the Islamic U- I'm from Moravica, right? They'll see that dominating the collegiate scene on the Busoga Islands doesn't mean anything when they get to the true big boys of college football competition, the NSCF. Willons Bolgano College seems destined for a last place finish, though the Lions of the South might be the coolest nickname in the Celestia.

Schedule

Both Northern and Loyola-Istria have interesting schedules. Northern Moravica is going to start off fast. They are immediately given a test to start off, playing host to none other than old rivals, the Islamic University of Busoga. We'll see what kind of fireworks we have for that game. There is a great history of Islamic U v. Northern battles, as the schools often competed in non-conference play in the Banijan Collegiate Sports Group, when both schools were members. The Islamic University is certainly going to be in for a ride, seeing exactly how much their football quality has fallen and seeing how much Northern Moravica's has risen since we joined the NSCF. It will be Week 4 and week 9 when the North v. South Showdown occurs, as Northern will host Loyola in Week 4 and the Blue Thunder will host the Herzegovina City side in Week 9, the penultimate game of the conference season. Of course, fans want that game to be the end of conference play, but schools probably want to avoid that, and as long as that's true, it won't happen.

Northern has an interesting non-conference schedule. They have played the University of the Commonwealth the past few years, though the schools this year decided to take a break from the series. Horace Browning, the athletic director, said the schools were committed to future matchups, although one would not happen this season(in the regular season, at least). Of course, these non-conference matchups are crucial- if you don't win your conference, you'll have to earn your way into the playoffs either via the rankings, or by impressing the committee. They'll pay a visit to Sadeg State in Week 11, then host Temiscouata Tech out of Jaspec in Week 12, and finally, play Saguenay in Week 13 on Senior Night. It is an intriguing non-conference slate. They've always been aggressive scheduling non-conference, and this season is no different.

Loyola-Istria has an interesting schedule as well. Fortunately for them, they'll get a game to break in their new quarterback against Willons Bolgano College, at home. But then, the schedule will only get tougher from there. They'll have to pay a visit to the Islamic University, as the competition's only Shia University plays against the competition's only Mormon University in a rivalry that used to be called the Crusader's Fight. While that name isn't official anymore for obvious reasons, fans tend to refer to the rivalry by its traditional name. It's always fun when the two meet, and for Loyola to be the first NSCF opponent for the Islamic University will be quite fun.

Loyola-Istria will have an interesting schedule as well. You can't rip their scheduling choices this year, though you could in most years. They will host the Cenesis Naval Academy in Week 11, out of Abanhfleft. A perennial playoff team, the Naval Academy usually doesn't play non-conference games, so this was a coup for Loyola-Istria's administrators. Then, of course, Mar Sara Tech. This will be the first time the two schools have played since the NSCF 18 title game, when Loyola-Istria was gunning for back-to-back NSCF titles at the Stadium of the Restoration, and Mar Sara Tech pulled off the upset. That will certainly be an exciting game. And, of course, the traditional last game of the season- the fifth edition of the Rebel's Cannon Bowl, in what has arguably become the premier non-conference rivalry of the NSCF. The home team has won thrillers each of the first four editions of this rivalry- who will win the fifth?

IT'll be a fun as hell season. Get your barbecues ready, get ready to listen to the band, and let's play some football!

Coulibay Top 7

I'll rank my own Top 7. Why not? There won't be much explanation this week as nobody's seen anybody play, but I'll talk more next week. And why 7? Who's gonna stop me, right?

#1- Cold Hill University(Ranoria, Big

- Defending champions who are returning their starting quarterback, who lost 30 pounds in the offseason. This team also beat Loyola at the Istria Lightning Yard in the semifinals last year, before beating Northern Moravica 26-0 in the NSCF Championship Game. That's an easy #1, and it's not even close.

#2- University of Loyola-Istria(Banija, Celestia)- Defending Conference champions. They're replacing their quarterback, but they've got an experienced roster almost everywhere else, especially on offense. They'll be fine.

#3- Richardson University(Ranoria, Big

- Returning a whole bunch of talent, and Chineze had a breakout year in Ranoria domestically. They're like Northern- have been around for quite a while, and watched their domestic rivals win a NSCF title. They've probably got the most push out of anyone in the NSCF to triumph this year?

#4- Northern Moravica University(Banija, Celestia)- Defending runner-ups. But why re-do the whole offense? That seems like questionable decision-making by Lance Kabuye. But he's won a title, so maybe give him the benefit of the doubt, but we'll see if they can switch to a ground and pound offense this year.

#5- Université du Saguenay(Royal Kingdom of Quebec, Woodlands)- This is a loaded, experience roster. Saguenay expects excellence, and they are a team that many believe could scale that mountain and earn a NSCF trophy this year. Junior quarterback Ian Lautner is the betting favorite for NSCF Most Outstanding Player this year, though of course it is extremely early to place those kinds of bets.

#6- University of the Commonwealth(Baker Park, Mineral)- They're three-time defending Mineral Conference champions. They know what they are doing- they've always been excellent and consistent. But they haven't been able to make that late playoff push yet. Is this the year they do so?

#7- Salamantic Universities(Ko-oren, Celestia)- That gives us 3 top 7 schools from the same conference! But the Salamantic Universities, even if not an actual university(who allowed this to happen?). But they got the defense, and even last year, they knocked off Northern Moravica in Herzegovina City. They'll be prepared this year to try and get that conference crown.

Way Too Early Top 5 NSCF Edition

5 - Mar Sara Tech
Listen, we get it, it is easy to call this pick homerism or being biased towards the domestic college to get a spot in the list, yet we assure you that the Raiders absolutely deserve their spot in the top five. Consider that the Raiders won the title three years ago with nothing but freshman in their offensive unit and only a select few upper classmen in the defense. Yes it was a bit of an upset win that the Raiders pulled off in NSCF 18, yet their names are etched into the trophy and history books for having lifted that title. With a squad now that has played together for three years, even with Vanorian universities missing out on the 19th edition and Mar Sara unable to defend their crown, you have to believe that the Raiders will be fighting for a conference title and a darkhorse of a title contender as well, especially with the veteran leadership that now occupies the squad at the key positions. Look for Asse-Asselin to be the cornerstone of the offense while Kiggwe Chasima will be utilized in the "Lone Ranger" formation taking direct snaps or even out wide as receiver to utilize that world class speed.

4 - Cold Hill University
That being said, if the Raiders are going to win the Big Eight conference, they will have the Rockets of Raynor University to worry about but also those pesky schools from Ranoria who have historically dominated the conference. Cold Hill is on the eye test the weaker of these two schools that look to stand as the biggest threats to the Raiders chances at a conference title, though that could be fond memories of how the Raiders dominated them in their playoff game three years prior. Regular season games have often been close, low scoring affairs with Cold Hill having something of a staunch defense in the past, making them more difficult to overcome than in theory than teams that try to outgun either Tech or Raynor. Cold Hill will be looking to reassert their spot as either the best or second best team in the conference and will be more than happy to stand in the way of Tech or Raynor if either squad can get the momentum going to seriously challenge for the conference title. Cold Hill naturally will be assuming that a spot in the playoffs is there for them to take and have enough tools on both sides of the ball to back up that claim, as well as being the current title holders.

3 - Richardson University
The other school from Ranoria and a third member of the Big Eight that makes this list, though the title pedigree in the conference is quite strong with both Mar Sara Tech and Cold Hill having lifted the trophy in the last four years, while Richardson itself finished as the runners up in the nineteenth edition. Most would switch around Cold Hill and Richardson or even have Cold Hill as the number one, having just won the trophy a few months before, but here in the Empire we think that Richardson is the better program overall. Yes current success is in Cold Hill's favor but Richardson just evokes memories of dominance in all assets of the game and how Ranorian schools burst onto the scene and were taking names from the word go. Like the other two schools from the conference in this list, they are going to have a tough time in conference play with their being four strong schools in the conference and all with dreams of lifting that title winner trophy at the end of the tournament. A spectacular sophmore season from Kuenda Sello could be the difference in them taking their fourth conference championship or seeing their rivals edge them out.

2 - Sadeg State
The Skyhawks have crafted them out a dynasty in the Horizon conference, having found a way to topple the Cosumarite hegemony that had reigned supreme in that conference for some time. If there is a team that Tech or Raynor don't want to face in the playoffs, it is Sadeg, as they are a complete package of a team and have made Drawkland proud with the way they have performed at the various collegiate events through the years. It is perhaps by mere reputation than the talent currently on the squad that they find themselves this high in the list, but with what appears to be a rather weak conference that should not be difficult for them to navigate, their appearance in the playoffs seems all but assured. From there, stranger things have happened, and the legend of the Skyhawks rise to prominence has some of those memorable moments that could be replicated once more this year. Nevermind the fact that they are seen as one of Tech's biggest rivals and their annual rivalry game taking place within the Empire this year, it may be a preview of a potential title game if both have the seasons they are expected to.

1 - Loyola University
Loyola-Istria, known officially as Loyola or by their moniker of the Blue Thunder is probably the premier gridiron university to go to in Atlantian Oceania, which is a big statement considering some of the great universities that are in the region with a history of success in gridiron both at a collegiate and a professional level. Banija is a hotbed of amazing talent and between Northern Moravica and Loyola, they get their pick of some of the best players in the game right in their own back yard, with enough talent for teams like Tech and Cold Hill to have four star recruits on their own roster from Banija. A bit of instability in Moravica in the last few years has left Loyola as the singular crown jewel in the Banija crown but can they live up to that expectation and hype? Betting houses have Loyola as the odds on favorite to win the title in NSCF XXI and they have all the talent to do it in all three phases of the game, the question will be one of mental fortitude and if they can steel themselves enough over the marathon of the season and the pitfall of the playoffs to make good on their loaded roster full of amazing talent.

Like all Drawkians, especially international caliber ones, Sadeg State's players are a top notch group with much to offer skill-wise. The offense primarily operates out of the shotgun with a back lining up alongside the QB, but the most common under-center formation has to be the I. The pistol make a common appearance, and don't be surprised to see a Wildcat every once in awhile. The run/pass split is around a 55/45, but with Brand Manlio's preferred QB recruits, don't be surprised to see many designed passes ending up in scrambles for big chunks of yards. Drag routes, slants, mid-distance crosses, posts, and corner routes are the most common in SSU's playbook. Runs are often a generic pitch, runs up the gut, or - Coach Manlio's favorite - option plays. SSU is known for having massive talent on the offensive side of the ball, especially in the backfield, but also lining up wide. Watch for tight end passes for huge gains, they're a common target in this scheme.

And while the team is renowned for its offense, you can't discount the defense. Talented shutdown corners and DBs are the hallmark and the pass rush is fantastic, but pass defense in the middle of the field leaves a lot to be desired from the Linebackers. The biggest issue about the Skyhawk's secondary is that they go for the ball too much - while this results in lots of turnovers, a missed pick obviously results in an opposing receiver in the open field. Blitzes sit on top of the playbook at SSU, just like many Drawkian books. Don't expect to run a similar running play twice, the front 7 is likely to come up with a counter blitz on the fly and smack the back for a loss of yards. Man coverage is called about 70/30 versus Zone coverage, another reason why missed interceptions are dangerous. Cover 2 Man coverage with a 4-3 front is the most common play the defense will run.

Special teams is known for its trick plays, but they don't run them as often as, say, the Grid Corps would. The SSU offense would be much more likely to stay out in 4th and under 2 than bring out the special teams for a fake or a regular punt/kick. Speaking of punts/kicks, the return game for the Skyhawks is also fearsome, with massively fast and shifty players returning most balls, not to mention the regularity of laterals during returns (not that they do much of that outside of special teams though). As far as kicking, the punters and kickers kick about as good as, say, college kickers or punters. Nothing special there, although they do err on the side of power over accuracy (good luck praying for a kick 6).

Also, see this dispatch about Drawkian physiology. If you don't want to deal with that though feel free to just handwave or ignore it, it's fine by me.

NSCF: So we have #1, #2 and #20 of the world in the conference, eh?

The NSCF season started! It's time to see what our boys can do in this hostile environment. If you, like me, follow University Sports in Lisander, you know this is not that pretty. Liga Academica Nacional (LAN) refuses to accept sponsorship and struggles with financial matters. They decide to award or not international qualifier based on how the team/college can gain exposure/funds without mixing sport and corporate funding. It's a shameful practise that lasted for years and still have many supporters. In Lisander, we say: There are too many rulers to too little peasants.

A lot of people who don't know sports are still there, with lifetime positions in the League. These people and these principles may even work in law, in education, in engineering, in arts or in any other educational possibilities inside a modern college. But college sport is no longer just a hobby. In basketball, the transition from College to SuperLeague already exists. The process that Portia University started fifteen years ago is a reality now, and it is functional! College Basketball is effectively a preparation category. The boys already arrive at the College with the intention of being pros. When they signed contracts with the Lisanderian Basketball Federation (FLB), they should have had that in mind. Here in The College Observer, we understand the costs of college sport in our nation, and that's why we decided to broadcast, for free, advertising that will help to fund NSCF and NSCAA programs. Clicking in the advertising, you'll be always redirected to University Shops or Licensed Retailers who buy/sell from University, funding college sport. All profits should go to the sport. It's the least we can do in this scenario.

Last time a lisanderian team entered NSCF, it was NSCF 9. The University of St. Michael the Archangel. Eleven seasons passed! That generation was Arena Bowl champions. Those guys struggled with amateurism and low pay, and now are settling as seasoned veterans in the planned National American Football League (NAFL). Archaic practices in college, combined with lack of support, made lisanderian gridiron football rely on too much in Arena Football and Minor Leagues. Despite this, NAFL is gaining traction and the exposure that Gridiron Football was provided by the new league was enough to make LAN consider awarding an international qualifier again. I wonder when NAFL and its institutional partner, the Association of Gridiron Football Athletes (AGFA), will gather enough support to make the transition function. It could help to improve the level of the game in Lisander.

But enough about bureaucracy. Let's talk about football!

We have an untested team, an entirely new generation and still reasonably unprepared at the doors of the professional league, that's a fact. But who could have imagined that the first tests would already be these challenges? Loyola, Northern Moravica and Salamantic are #1, #2 and #20 of the entire league respectively. We already know that the first two places in the conference are impossible. The third, only if Ko-oren's team doesn't match what's expected of them and Poli does wonderfully against Willons Bolgano and Busoga Islamic. The goal is ambitious. While USMA entered NSCF IX with expectations of "gaining international experience", Politechnica wants to at least make it to the Bowl games.

And the path is already open. Politechnica played a good game against Salamantic last night. The result was within the most realistic expectations (not the optimistic ones, unfortunately). The defeat by 35-14 highlighted the level that the sport is beyond our borders. But still, there are positive factors left. The two touchdowns made by Poli, a 19-yard pass for Luke Heyns and a 26-yard run by Lucas Montez showed that this team's best feature is the agility. Montez, that also plays as a winger in Poli Rugby in the football offseason (although it is actually more accurate to say the opposite, that he plays football in rugby offseason after all college rugby is much more popular) is a fifth-year with great potential. He could easily be a pro in any of the two codes. He was elected as the best player of the Poli in the match, rating 7.3/10.

To the next match, against Willons Bolgano, we have some expectations. They're also newcomers to the league and seem to be struggling as much as Poli. They played against the All-League leaders Loyola in MD1 and were defeated 48-9. The team is still quite mysterious to me since they were playing without names on the back of the jerseys, but provided Bue Thunder amassed that result, they shouldn't be that great. We're not taking the win for granted, but I believe there's a good possibility.

Gridiron football is more of a curiosity than a serious sport in Sajnur, and along with being less popular than the main team sports of association football, Sajnuran football, cricket, and rugby, it's also less popular than basketball and motorised quidditch. As such, the gridiron scene is mostly in universities, although given Sajnur's willingness to throw money at just about anything, there is an eight team professional league. Gridiron is largely confined to the southern original provinces of Sajnur, with the only prominent university team north of Magji being in Alahin, capital of Solmie province, and no teams at all in Kalavar or the acquired provinces. A large majority of gridiron players in Sajnur are not native Sajnurans, but instead are foreign university students or expat professionals.

Bowerstone University 'Bolts'

Background Info:The 21st NSCF season will be the fourth that the Bolts are in the competition, and this will be a notable statement year for Bowerstone, and particularly for it's head coach in George Nevin. Last year the Bolts posted a losing record, though somehow managing to keep their bowl streak alive by winning their third non-playoff bowl, and it marked a low water point for the team. They had begun last season with high expectations to develop further, and had hoped to qualify for the playoffs but weak, inconsistent play and a shoddy defense saw that all go down the wayside. Dirk Wallace was not the quarterback that the team needed last year, and there is alot of attention around him this year as Nevin has announced he will retain the starting job - will he live up to expectations from his redshirted year and high school play, or will he turn out to be just another busted prospect?

Quarterback play wasn't the only thing that jeopardized the Bolts last season, their loss of key senior figures from the 19th season was very evident as their defensive unit struggled all season long, though they did have a few highlights towards the end, such as scoring more points than the offense in the last two games; however, I'm not sure you would want to brag about this too loudly. To try and combat this, Nevins fired Kelley Brassington, the team's defensive coordinator, over the offseason and replaced her with Alf Ramsey, an former player in the Anthoran collegiate scene, having been a standout corner/wide receiver at Stenhall from 595 till 599, and also had a promising start in the AGL having been drafted to the Sibeck Vipers out of the first round and received All-Star accolades for each of his three seasons until he chose to retire in the offseason last year after he missed half the season due to a serious concussion. He was well renowned for his athleticism and work ethic, the 'hustle' was one of the things heavily covered by the Anthoran media and talked about and hopefully he has assembled a much more effective unit here for NSCF XXI

Stadium: Hookfield Stadium, capable of holding 46,000 fans and spectators is located just south of University property in the rolling hills of Antyne Province, inside the town of Darstown, home to about 100,000 residents. Built nineteen years ago, it is well maintained and offers modern amenities, such as free wifi and spacious concession stand and has become a symbol in the Antyne gridiron scene and across most of Anthor. Parking facilities onsite are managed through a traditional parking space, and there are numerous hotels, lodgings, restaurants, bars, and other recreational establishments located within a half mile or more, mostly clustered around Baronial Road 17, or Gundersen Road as it's known locally.
