Invictus Games

Four more contests, four more chances for gold in Ulan Khol

SHARE Image Image Image Image

With only four more competitions left to go many Cassiens are holding their breaths in the hopes that the team may still earn more gold in Ulan Khol

Cassier won another bronze in women's snowboarding yesterday, but many believe that Cassier may earn first place finishes in the competitions to come

ULAN KHOL - This year's Winter Invictus has been the worst in Team Cassier's history, with only a single gold medal twelve days in. While many Cassiens remain angry at this year's outcome and a government investigation for corruption within the CIC looking likely, the possibility that Cassier may walk away with another first place finish remains in the realm of possibility.

  • President Tremblay calls for "calm and dialogue" amid rail blockade
  • What does a government investigation mean for Team Cassier?
  • Andade riot damages officially exceed 2012, becoming worst in city's history

Cassier will be present in all four of the events that are taking place over the next three days which include curling, speed skating, freestyle skiing, and skiing combined.

Cassier has historically been a strong competitor in the sport curling, usually vying for positions against Estmere and more recently Baekjeong. The curling teams will have a long and arduous journey to undertake to get to gold today however, and will lack the advantage of a bye-spot that Eldmark, Velzemia, Montecara, and Buckland occupy this year.

The teams remain optimistic in their chances however, with the athletes on both men's and women's curling sharing a similar positive attitude.

"I'm just happy to be here," men's curling sweeper Alban Massé stated at the practice sheet yesterday. "Gold would certainly be nice and I do like our chances, but playing a strong game comes first."

Tomorrow's events will see Cassier compete in speed skating and freestyle skiing, with the former of two sports Cassien athletes proving to be one of Cassier's strong suits in the past. Cassier holds the most number of gold medals in freestyle skiing, and have the full intention of going for gold once again this year.

"The other Cassien teams may have shot their shot, but we haven't just yet," said women's aerial coach Laure Loupe today. "People seem to think that the Winter Invictus is over just because the guy's hockey team lost, and I find that really sad and disrespectful to the other teams. I hope that by shooting for gold tomorrow we can prove some of those downers wrong."

The final sporting event of the 2020 Winter Invictus and Cassier's final shot at gold will be skiing combined, set to take place on Saturday.

CALDISH MEN'S TEAM WIN GOLD IN CURLING TOURNAMENT

A first place finish in their tournament earned the Caldish men's curling team a gold medal.

ULAN KHOL – The Caldish men's curling team took first place in the men's tournament. After advancing through the contest, Caldia qualified for the final match against host Narozalica. After a closely fought match, the Caldish men's team bested Narozalica 10-9.

Their finish earned the team a gold medal, helping Caldia maintain it's second place standing on the medal count with Gaullica close behind. The Gaullican team won the women's curling tournament, securing their own gold medal.

In the men's, Narozalica took silver and Estmere clinched bronze after beating Satucin 7-5 in the third place playoff.

The finish in the men's competition has continued Caldia's tradition of strong showings in curling, a sport native to the country.

While curling generally enjoys a low profile internationally, it is a recreational pastime in Caldia and played in many tertiary schools. Fans throughout the country frequently watch curling matches, broadcast at local pubs.

Yesterday's tournament was no exception, and fans throughout Caldia celebrated the team's first place finish. By beating Narozalica, the Caldish team inched closer to the possibility of over-taking the hosts in the medal count.

It was the last Invictus games for Caldish curler Cathal Mag Uidhir. He announced he would be retiring after over fifteen years on the men's Invictus curling team. Mag Uidhir leaves Ulan Khol with a gold medal, ending a successful career on Caldia's Invictus team.

Narozalica has 33 points earned and a total of nine gold medals, with Caldia behind in second place with 27 points and five gold medals. Gaullica sits in third place with 24 points and three golds. The nations are leading the pack by a wide margin, with Swetania, Cassier, and Valentir virtually tied behind Gaullica with 16, 15, and 14 earned points respectively.

The medal count has narrowed in the final days of the Ulan Khol games. With just six opportunities to earn medals left, athletes from Narozalica, Caldia, and Gaullica have their eyes on that first place prize.

An updated projection published by Estmere-based Sportsnet, a sports analysis company, projects Narozalica will keep first, Caldia will take second, and Gaullica third. This has been the general order for some time, with some interruptions.

Blažena Andaesisin was Narozalica's only medalist on Day 14.

HEARTBREAK FOR NAROZALICA GOING INTO THE FINAL DAY?

A monumental performance from Caldia on Day 14 puts the hosts behind for the first time in the competition.

Now questions are being asked as to whether Narozalica can bring home the Invictus win in their home country. The Caldian team pulled ahead at the end of Day 14 with what it set to become a record-breaking one-day performance from the northern Euclean country.

Caldia achieved three gold medals and one bronze medal to give them a tournament-changing ten points, shooting them ahead of Narozalica, who only emerged with a single silver.

Today's events puts Narozalica in second place on 35 points, with Caldia sitting on top with 37 points. Caldia also have one more medal, with 16 compared to the hosts' 15. But it has been Narozalica's gold medals that have been their saving grace, with nine of them over the course of the tournament - the most of any nation. They will need to rely on a gold if they are to have any hope of overtaking Caldia at the last minute to pip them for the title.

We've had Statman Dave crunch some numbers in the background, to give you the rundown of what to expect from the last day:

  • If Caldia manage to secure one gold on Day 15, they will win the games.
  • However, if both countries manage to tie, Narozalica will win the Games on gold medal count.
  • Gaullica secures a tidy third place, ten points behind second-placed Narozalica, and seven ahead of fourth-placed Swetania.

2020 is certainly expected to be one of the closest and most intense finishes of an Invictus Games yet, with the viewing seats for Skiing Combined events tomorrow completely sold out.

The men's and women's skiing combined are the only events to take place tomorrow, after which we will know who wins, but the official medal ceremony and closing ceremony will not take place until February 23rd, where spectators will gather back in the KolonetsArena to see the victors presented their medals.

CALDIA OVERTAKES NAROZALICA IN THE MEDAL COUNT ON DAY 14

Caldish athletes won a total of three gold medals on Day 14, allowing Caldia to overtake Narozalica in the medal count.

ULAN KHOL -A historic performance on Day 14 of the Ulan Khol games has catapulted the Caldish team into first place, leapfrogging host Narozalica in the medal count for the first time.

The unexpected results saw Narozalica deposed at the leader in the medal count, which it has led virtually undisputed since the games began last week. Caldish athletes had a strong showing in several key competitions on Day 14, shoring up their position and throwing the overall results of the medal count into uncertainty.

It had long been expected that Narozalica would earn both the most medals and the most points at Ulan Khol. However, the Caldish Invictus team has now won a total of 16 medals while Narozalica has 15. Caldia also had 37 points to Narozalica's 35. The Invictus host still leads in terms of gold medals won, nine gold's to Caldia's eight.

The top of the leader board is now razor-thin, with Day 15 set to determine which team ultimately comes out on top. Should Caldia win a single gold medal in tomorrow's skiing combined competitions, it will have more points than Narozalica. Caldish athletes usually do well in the skiing combined, and their strong showing in today's skiing matches has fans hopeful.

Gaullica is resting comfortably in third place, but Caldia has pulled ahead and the battle for first place with Narozalica is on.

All eyes are on the final day of the 2020 Invictus tomorrow, as fans flock to see the final competitions.

Today, the Caldish team took gold medals in both the men's and women's freestyle skiing competitions. In the men's contest, Aimilia took the silver and Gaullica the bronze. Narozalica took silver and Estmere bronze's in the women's contest.

Speed skating competitions were also held today, where Team Caldia secured several additional medals. The bronze medal went to the Caldia in the men's team pursuit while the women's team took gold in their competition.

Tomorrow is the final day for medals to be earned before Sunday's closing ceremony.

Gaullica nestles into third place on penultimate event day of the Invictus.
The two remaining events tomorrow make it mathematically impossible for Gaullica to be overtaken in points.

Ulan Khol, Narozalica - As the second last day of Invictus events comes to a close, Gaullica sits comfortably in third place by overall points -- behind Narozalica, the hosts, and Calida, two strong 'Winter Invictus' competitors.

Narozalica, who have had a strong first place control for the majority of the games, saw the Caldish overtake them today as Caldia took home gold in both the men and women's freestyle skiing. Caldia now sits at the top of the board with more overall medals to Narozalica (15 - 14, respectively), and two more points (37 - 35, respectively.) Gaullica lags behind both on medals and on points: sitting at 25, following yesterday's curling victory for the women and Pierlot's bronze today.

This position sees them seven points ahead of Swetania, the nation currently in the running to come overall fourth. Even if Swetania were able to achieve both golds tomorrow, they would not bridge the gap to take the third position. Because of this, much of the fanfare is concerned with who will emerge victorious from the 'neck-and-neck' race between Caldia and Narozalica.

We asked Maxime Pierlot how it felt to secure a bronze for himself and for his country; to which he replied that it was: "incredible given the level of competition at [these Invictus Games]". Gaullica, whilst a strong competitor, has often found itself historically behind other competing nations at times, such as Werania, Swetania and or Cassier.

However, with mathematics on our side, it seems that Gaullica will go from entering this competition with fears that it would be a repeat of 1996 to actually being one of our stronger performances. Nay-sayers would comment about the shortcomings of other teams over the successes of our own, but other countries have taken notice: there are rumrours elements of the AHL are already investigating the possibility of exhibition matches in Gaullica.

Ultimately, Gaullica may not have won the most medals, points or even golds: but she won a renewed sense of vigour and determination for a series of games often relegated to a small group of nations.

AMATHIAN INVICTUS COMMITTEE TO BE REORGANIZED FOLLOWING UNDERWHELMING RESULTS

Expectations were already low during the enthusiastic and glamorous opening ceremony in Ulan Khol. The times when Amathia would regularly win tens of gold and silver medals in multiple events were clearly long gone, but despite that, the country still managed to snatch a few medals during the last two Invictus Games, with moderately acceptable results in both Haussimont in 2016 and Spálgleann in 2018 . No one expected the Amathian athletes to earn a high place in the medal table – but still, there were some hopeful desires. After the fiasco of the Coupe de Monde, the disastrous behavior of the Amathian ultras and the disappointing results, Arciluco was a lot more careful about which fans it would send to foreign sport events – but even so, a considerable number of Amathians showed up in the stadiums and arenas of Ulan Khol. The Coup de Monde was a national shame – the Winter Invictus Games were Amathia’s change to clean its reputation a little and finally gain some medals and victories.

Of course, it didn’t happen this way.

The first two days were a disaster. Absolutely no medals, and even worse – a narrow defeat against Etruria, 2-1. Ice hockey is of course not football, where perhaps the reactions of the fans would have been a lot more emotional, but even so, a defeat against a perceived rival was not a great way to start the games. And the results of course, continued to be mediocre at best. Even if Amathian athletes managed to advance through some stages, they always frustratingly and sometimes closely failed to win any medals. Shameful moments continued to pile up, including a 15-12 loss in Men’s Curling to Gibany and a 4-2 defeat against the same nation in Women’s Curling.

The exasperation felt by the fans, the athletes, and the entire nation culminated today, where after more disappointing results in Men’s Freestyle Skiing Velkan Bărbulescu the President of the Amathian Invictus Committee, announced his resignation. In a short press conference, he apologized to all Amathians for the disappointing results, and tried to assure them that his still unnamed successor is planning a reorganization of a committee, and a proper plan to attract more funding and investments before the next Invictus Games.

In hindsight, it should have perhaps been obvious long ago. The Amathian Invictus Committee was very much like the Amathian Football Federation under the administration of the Ministry of Youth and Sport. Poor funding and a lack of enthusiasm have finally taken their toll – we can only hope that things will change until the next Games, and then Amathian athletes will once again stand on the podium.

Adevărul will continue to keep you posted on these events.

Update: In an ironic twist of fate, roughly an hour after Bărbulescu's resignation, Adi Kiritescu won a gold medal in Men's Speed Skating, saving the country's honor. It doesn't change the rest of the mediocre results, but Amathians from all over the world can now rejoice - our athletes are not coming back without any medals!

PIRAEA TO LEAVE ULAN KHOL WITHOUT MEDALS, BUT SPIRITS REMAIN HIGH

Image
The Piraean team made a splash at the parade of nations with the team jacket design.
Ulan Khol, Narozalica - As the 2020 Winter Invictus Games in Ulan Khol come to a close, the Piraean team is set to return home without any medals. Despite one of the team's strongest showings at the winter games in its history, Piraea's athletes failed to turn that momentum into medals won.

Such a result was not unexpected. As a small nation located in sunny southeastern Euclea, Piraea often goes medal-less at the winter games. Despite this, spirits among the team and its fans remain high. Ulan Khol was the largest showing Piraea has ever had at the Winter Invictus, sending a total of 14 athletes. For comparison, in 2016 the team sent just six athletes to the Haussimont Games in Valentir.

At Ulan Khol, Piraea contested both the men's and women's competitions for the biathlon and the ski jump for the first time. It also qualified to send a team to the pair's figure skating contest.

The slow but steady growth of the country's presence at the Winter Invictus can be contributed to the leadership of the National Invictus Committee, which has sought to raise Piraea's profile at the winter games. As one of the country's that lays claim to the origins of the Invictus Games, Piraea has long hoped to increase its profile at the Invictus where it is dwarfed by Etruria. While the Invictus Games have their technical origins under the Solarian Empire, they were inspired by the practices and traditions of the ancient Piraeans.

Even though the team failed to win any medals, it still garnered plenty of buzz at Ulan Khol. The team drew international intention for the jackets worn by its athletes during the parade of nation's at the opening ceremonies two weeks ago. International social media debated the jackets extensively. Like many other smaller countries, the Piraean team frequently wears unconventional uniforms at the Winter Invictus to help draw attention.

The 2020 Ulan Khol Games come to an end today, with the final competitions in the skiing combined. The closing ceremonies take place tomorrow and the Para-Invictus Games are set to start next week.

SENRIA SNAGS FIFTH PLACE IN LAST DAY OF 2020 WINTER INVICTUS
Bronze in womens' skiing pushes Senria above winter goliath Cassier;
Dragons to return home with four gold medals as best Coian team

Image
Senria's womens' speed skating team celebrate their gold medal victory in the 5,000 meter final.

February 22, 2020 | by Moriyasu Akibahara | Senrian athletes and fans alike are jubilant after Senria placed fifth in the medal table for the 2020 Winter Invictus games, beating out winter games goliath Cassier by a single point after winning the bronze medal in womens' skiing combined and earning the highest ranking of any Coian team at the tournament.

Senria earned its first medal of the tournament on February 9, with a bronze in mens' short track speed skating, where Senria has traditionally done well, and its first gold on the 13th for pairs figure skating. It earned subsequent golds in womens' downhill Aventine skiing, mens' ski jumping, womens' speed skating, a silver in team pursuit mens' speed skating, and its final bronze in combined womens' skiing earlier today. This final bronze pushed Senria up in the medal charts from eighth place to fifth, behind only Swetania, Gaullica, Caldia, and hosts Narozalica. With four gold medals, Senria earned the third most gold medals of any nation competing, behind only Caldia's eight and Narozalica's ten.

In addition to ranking only just behind many traditionally-dominant Euclean nations and beating Cassier, Senria came ahead of nations such as Azmara, Estmere, Etruria, Werania, and Chervolesia. Senria also ranked substantially higher than Xiaodong, which came in nineteenth place, and Xiaodong's ally Zorasan, which fell to fourteenth in the final day of the competition.

The medals won by Senria reflect its traditional dominance in skiing events, particularly Aventine skiing, which can be easily practiced for in Senria's mountainous terrain, and its excellence in speed skating. While this strong performance by Senrian athletes has earned much commendation, substantial attention and praise has gone to Senrian female athletes this Invictus, who won half of the team's medals and (including pairs figure skating, where each country is represented by a male-female pair) three out of four of its gold medals.

Speaking to the press, Eriko Akaza- a coach for Senria's Aventine skiing teams- told the press she was "immensely proud" of the performance by Senrian athletes. "We have performed exceptionally, and it was a deep honor to see our hard work and our sportsmanship reward us with a place in the top five," she stated. "The amount of work that our athletes have put in is exceptional, and it resulted in an exceptional performance."

Yahiro Omotehara, who won the gold medal in mens' ski jumping, expressed similar sentiments earlier today. "I thank our coaches for all their work, and our fans for all their support, because without them, we could not have performed as well as we did," he said. "It is a great honor to represent our country at this sort of stage, at this level, and I am glad that all of the hard work and support paid off as it has." Kotoe Rakuyama, one of Senria's contestants in pairs figure skating, congratulated the combined womens' skiing team on television after their victory, saying that "you have helped make sure that we can all be proud to be Senrians".

Prime Minister Reika Okura was one of many public figures who took to Twitter to congratulate Senrian athletes for their performance:

Secretary of Tourism and Sport Takahiro Sugawara stated to the press shortly afterwards that he would begin the processes necessary to award medal-winning athletes the Star of Athletic Talent, a national civil honor traditionally given to Senrian athletes who perform particularly well at the Invictus and other athletic events.

Many members of the general public expressed similar sentiments both on- and offline. Many Senrian fans on social media have posted videos combining footage of Senrian athletes winning and receiving medals with audio of the Senrian national anthem or other patriotic songs. Meanwhile, Zenzou Hatuda, a Senrian fan who traveled to Ulan Khol, told Mainiti Sinbun that he was "immensely proud" of the performance by Senrian athletes. "We could have won more medals, certainly, but we performed quite well, especially with regards to gold medals. I consider myself lucky to have seen our talented athletes in person."

Another Senrian fan, Asao Imamura, expressed agreement with Hatuda. "Our athletes and our coaches did a fantastic job, one that reflects well on all of Senria. All things considered, I'm not sure if we could have had a better team represent us here."

The Chervolesian Men’s National Hockey Team won the gold medal, beating Gaullica 15-0

Ulan Khol, Narozalica — With the 2020 Invictus Games officially coming to a close, the brave and patriotic athletes of the Chervolesian Federation of Syndicates have claimed the ultimate victory in the games. Following the nation’s wins in the Mens’ and Womens’ Combined Skiing, the country’s gold medal total increases to 30, a new record for the Winter Invictus Games. This brings the overall medal count to 83 and a points total of 171 points, both Invictus Games records. The next nearest nation were the hosts Narozalica, who secured two gold, one silver, and one bronze medals, more than likely through nefarious means.

Through hard work and dedication to sport, the brave and patriotic athletes of our nation has showed the world the superiority of Chervolesian-oriented Socialism over the corrupt Imperialist and Social Functionalist cabals of the so-called “Euclean Community” and their puppets in Narozalica and Coius.

Following news of the Chervolesian victory at the 2020 Invictus Games, millions of patriotic citizens took to the streets throughout the country in celebration of our nation’s great victory. In recognition of this, Co-People’s Commissar of Culture and the Arts Vitalij Sergiyenko has declared Monday a state holiday, so that all of the country’s citizens can welcome the athletes’ return from Ulan Khol.

“The hard work and dedication of our athletes must be recognized,” People’s Commissar Sergiyenko told reporters.

“They have shown themselves to be role models that everybody should aspire to be like. Through dedication to their work, good sportsmanship, and Chervolesian-oriented Socialism, our national athletes have shown to the world that good athletic performance and Chervolesian-oriented Social go hand-in-hand.”

Many members of the Chervolesian public have expressed similar views as the honorable People’s Commissar Sergiyenko.

“Between the [January 13 Missile Test] and the Chervolesian victory at the 2020 Invictus Games, Chervolesia has shown the world that Socialism provides the best for everything.” One fan, who wished to remain anonymous, told Cherinform.

Since news of the great Chervolesian victory at the 2020 Invictus Games broke, hundreds of organizations around the world have voiced their congratulations to both the brave and patriotic Chervolesian athletes and populace.

The Narozalic Committee for the Cooperation of the Narozalic Republic and Chervolesian Federation of Syndicates told Cherinform the Chervolesian victory was “not just a victory for the Chervolesian Federation of Syndicates and Chervolesian-oriented Socialism, but was a victory for the entirety of the world’s hardworking and oppressed proletariat.”

A similar statement from the Zorasani Group for Solidarity and Cooperation with the Chervolesian Federation of Syndicates said “the victory at the 2020 Winter Invictus Games by the Chervolesian Federation of Syndicates will surely inspire the global proletariat to rise up against their capitalist oppressors.”

The Chervolesian athletes are set to return beginning tomorrow following the Closing Ceremonies.

Government removes the executive body of the National Invictus Committee citing "systemic failures."
The entire executive board of the Etrurian National Invictus Committee has been sacked and investgiation launched after poor showing by Etruria in Ulan Khol.

The government has officially announced the sacking of the entire executive of the National Invictus Committee. The Federal Ministry for Culture, Sports and National Identity has stated that, “consecutive failings in sporting events and clear misuse of government funding requires significant action.” The government has further announced that the NIC will undergo reform and restructuring to “ensure that government funding goes directly into the training and quality of our national sportspeople.”
Image
Head of the NIC, Alcide Granzi reportedly heard of his removal through twitter.

The FMoCS announced the removal of the NIC executive in a statement posted online. The move was expected by some, with the government expressing serious displeasure at the failure of Etruria’s winter Invictus team to secure a top 10 position. The government further defended its position in the statement by saying, “since 2012, the federal government has spent over ₣1.9 billion on training, facilities and support infrastructure across multiple fields of sport. For Etruria to produce little this Winter Invictus and the previous Summer Games raises concerns that need addressing.”

The government accused the current executive body of the NIC of “systematic failings, misuse of government grants and funding, while adopting a highly questionable approach to sponsorship and training.”

The statement said further, “in wake of these concerns and failings, the Federal Ministry for Culture, Sports and National Identity is therefore taking decisive action and officially announcing the removal of the entire executive of the National Invictus Committee. A full-scale ministerial investigation into the NIC’s practices will take place in due course and its results will seek to recommend means of improvement and reform.”

Alcide Granzi, the Secretary-General of the Etrurian National Invictus Committee was attending the closing ceremony in Ulan Khol, where he reportedly discovered his removal from twitter. He spoke to ARE Sports after the ceremony telling reporters, “I can’t believe it, it’s a hatchet job. Our sportspeople did incredibly well against a highly talented global showing. Sacking us all won’t change the quality of our opponents.”

A government statement released earlier this evening rejected accusations that the sackings were politically motivated, with a spokesman saying, “the government has more important duties and responsibilities that conduct vendettas against individuals or officials. Etruria is a great sporting nation and recently, political appointees from previous pro-establishment governments have proven ineffectual or incompetent. This cannot be allowed when such serious investment by government is made into the NIC.”

The government hopes to appoint a new executive for the NIC in coming weeks, with reports that former national football coach, Federico Galtieri is being tipped for the role of Secretary-General.

The move has sparked renewed debate across Etruria, with several high-profile Invictus sportspeople coming out in defence of the government.

Augustina Zollo a gold-medalist in fencing told Orrizonte News, “I’ve heard plenty of stories of the NIC making a mess of training and team selection. The sub-committees, which head individual sports have had their proposed representatives at Winter and Summer games rejected by the NIC.”

Marco Barbarini a former head of the NIC described a “culture of patronage.” Speaking on Nuovo Giornali he said, “there’s a real culture of patronage in the NIC. Many of our Winter sportspeople this year were selected because they’re the children of either former sportspeople or because they’re related to NIC figures. When I ran the NIC in the late 2000s, we never had this. We based selection on skill and endurance, not who the mother or father was in the 1994 Winter Games.”

While the government has taken action against the NIC, the other growing story over this year’s games has been the vitriolic backlash against figure skating bronze-medallist Federica Luziani, who dedicated her medal to the women of Etruria, in protest against the ban on abortion.

The 22-year old has reportedly removed herself from social media after she began to receive death-threats for her intervention on the abortion debate. The young woman has also been to the police after her parent’s car was vandalised on Friday. Yesterday, the NIC issued a statement condemning the abuse aimed at Luziani saying, “no sportsperson who represents Etruria should be treated in this way. No person, man or woman should be punished for expressing an opinion.” The abuse has been blamed on football ultras, who have been “accused” of being violent or intimidating in support of right-wing causes or the Tribune Movement government.

NATIONAL TEAM CELEBRATES AS CALDIA FINISHES SECOND IN ULAN KHOL MEDAL COUNT

Today's closing ceremonies mark the end of the 2020 Winter Invictus at Ulan Khol.

ULAN KHOL – Caldia's Invictus team secured a second place finish at the 2020 Ulan Khol Winter Games. The team had a strong finished towards the end of the games, solidifying their position at the front of the medal table and temporarily leapfrogging host Narozalica.

The Caldish team finished with 37 total points and 16 medals overall: eight gold, five silver, and three bronze. The finished in second place behind Narozalica, who had ten gold medals and 38 points earned. Both Narozalica and Caldia finished with 16 overall medals. Narozalica secured its first place position on the final day of the games after winning gold in the men's skiing combined. If Caldia had won a single medal in the skiing combined, the teams would have at least tied.

Caldia had a strong finish at the end of the games, beating expectations that it would take second place at Ulan Khol. Athletes celebrated their performance at the closing ceremonies, which were held tonight. The ceremonies featured one final showcase of Narozalica culture, with a particular emphasis on the traditions of the Zalyk minority group.

The closing ceremonies also featured a showcase of Caldish culture. The 2024 Winter Invictus Games will be held in Invertwinc, the third time that Caldia has hosted the winter competition. Previously, Caldia hosted in 1972 in Spalgleann and 1996 in Benbaun.

The Laird Mayor of Invertwinc, Cian Mac Innes, participated in the ceremonies as the Caldish flag was hoisted alongside Narozalica's to mark the 2024 games. Also in attendance were members of the Royal Family and Taoiseach Stiofán Mac Suibhne.

Mac Suibhne expressed his pride in the team on Twitter last night, congratulating Caldish athletes "for their phenomenal performance". His Majesty the King also met with athletes from Team Caldia last night. The Invictus team is set to return to Caldia tomorrow where they will be received at St Ellen's Palace by the king and members of the Royal Family.

Invictus President Gert Hemstede declared to games closed, thanking all of the athletes for competing and those who planned the games, marking the formal end of the games at Ulan Khol.

With a strong showing at Ulan Khol, hopes are high that the team will remain competitive in 2024 and even finish in first.

This year the Caldish team is saying goodbye to over a dozen of its athletes. Before the Ulan Khol games began, 16 Caldish athletes confirmed this would be their last Winter Invictus. Among them are skier Oisín Mac Carthaigh, figure-skater Eithne Ni Cheanndubháin, and curler Cathal Mag Uidhir. Both Mac Carthaigh and Mag Uidhir leave their final Invictus with newly-earned gold medals.

Millions in Caldia tuned in to watch the games this year, and TRN projects that over 150,000 households watched tonight's closing ceremony live.

The Para-Invictus Olympic Games will begin next week, where the Caldish team will compete again. TRN has exclusive coverage of the 2020 Winter Para-Invictus Games. All matches will be broadcast on TRN Spórt.

What will Ulan Khol mean for Team Cassier in the future?

The 2020 Winter Invictus has been widely acknowledged as a "disaster" for Team Cassier, with the games yielding the lowest medal count in the organization's history.

The lack of enthusiasm from Cassier's athletes was clear for spectators to see during the closing ceremony.

ULAN KHOL - The 2020 Winter Invictus games in Ulan Khol officially came to a close yesterday with the world officially waving goodbye to their Narozalican hosts and looking to Caldia for the next games in 2024. While many nations walked away from Ulan Khol in triumph, Cassien heads hung low as the team returns home after a performance that has been considered by many to be "disastrous".

  • Federal police and rail companies issue warning to protestors
  • Government announces official investigation into Cassien Invictus Committee
  • Quapelle Court of Appeal to rule on whether carbon tax should stand

Cassier came into Ulan Khol with high expectations, with most sports analysts and networks predicting that the team would finish anywhere between second and fifth on the medal table. Team Cassier's poor results in the first week would quickly cause many to take pause, however it would be Cassier's defeat in the men's semi-finals in hockey for the concern to transform into outrage.

"To say Team Cassier under performed in Ulan Khol is an understatement," SRC Sports commentator Roger Loupe said in the after show of SRC's broadcast of the closing ceremony on Sunday. "Big questions are going to have to be answered in the coming weeks and months."

Public outcry regarding the Cassien Invictus Committee's statements and the team's poor performance has reached ears in Nouvelle-Rayenne. As of this morning a federal investigation into the CIC has officially begun, with many expecting that many individuals in high ranking executive positions may be sacked.

"The government of Cassier carries the expectation that the Cassien Invictus Committee and Team Cassier will provide the resources to Cassien athletes and coaches need to succeed in the games. The abnormally poor results of Ulan Khol hint that something has gone wrong," Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities Denise Barbeau stated in the press conference this morning that announced the start of the investigation. "Our goal is to figure out what that was through thorough investigation and a close look into the processes that went into preparing for this year's Invictus."

The investigation could mean that big changes may be coming to Team Cassier in the near future, with it carrying serious ramifications for Cassier's performance not just in the winter games but also summer and other international sporting events the team is in charge of.

"We may be about to witness an overhaul of Team Cassier at an organizational level," sports commentator Dany Duval said on SRC Sports radio. "I don't expect anything drastic to happen to the athletes and coaching staff and think that most of those present in Ulan Khol will to attempt to qualify for 2024. As for the higher ups? I think they've found themselves in some hot water."

More details to come as the investigation develops.
