HUElavia get a Historical Victory against Mercedini!
HUElavia came into these qualifiers as a potent Pot 4 team, with the most notable draw in the group was between them and Mercedini. These two had previously met in the World Cup 83 Qualifiers where HUElavia upsetted Mercedini 4-2 on the road, before Mercedini returned the favor and gave a 1-2 defeat to Los Amarillos in Curumba in the return leg, which was the start of the difficulties the team had in their eventual failure to qualify for the Final Tournament. For this rematch, it was played in Curumba once again, but this time, in the Estadio Capital, where a sold out crowd of 90,000 was cheering and roaring for Los Amarillos.
The first half was very tense with both teams doing tactical passes which led to an eventual shot the would either be blocked by the goalies or go wide. The only notable occasion was a cross by Gallegos met the leg of Petit that went into the net in the 41st minute, which led the crowd to jump up and celebrate, only for it to be called off for offside, after VAR revealed that in the buildup to the cross, Petit was a fraction over the line. The crowd groaned with the goal disallowed, and the first half ended 0-0.
The second half saw a spark once again by HUElavia, as an error by Brindliev, who lost control of the ball, allowed Petit to get the ball and go one-on-one with Hosset, where he slotted it between Hosset's legs into the net, making it 1-0 in the 51st minute. The crowd began to jump and cause the stadium to rumble from the celebrations as HUElavia took a vital lead. This lead was short lived, as in the 55th minute, a corner whipped in by Garzallo met the head of Dostalok to tie the match at 1-1, with the Mercedini fans cheering in their section for the goal. This goal gave reason for a substitution to be made, with Gonzalez being subbed off for HUElavian wonderkid Marc Navarro who came in right before the restart of the game. Navarro would once again make a name for himself, as a cross by Marchena allowed Navarro to leap up once again and score a fantastic bicycle kick goal to make it 2-1. The bench and crowd erupted from the spectacular goal, with Navarro being mobbed by the players while the stadium shook from the celebration. Mercedini was now behind in the same scoreline they had when they defeated Los Amarillos, but they looked lost as the match progressed, and eventually in the 83rd minute, Navarro took a long, blistering shot to test Hosset, only for it to go over the goalkeeper into the back of the net, making it 3-1. Navarro was mobbed once again, with the crowd erupting and celebrating the goal and the vital victory. Once the whistle blew, all of HUElavia celebrated as they got revenge for the previous defeat in Curumba.
With the victory, HUElavia keeps pace with Starblaydia for the direct qualification, as both have 9 points. Although, Starblaydia's 5-2 win against Folmara expands their growing Goal Difference to +10, while HUElavia has +3. HUElavia are in a good run so far and will have Matchday 5 on the road, visiting Tara & Cambray, where HUElavia are seen as General favorites. After that, HUElavia will be hosting Starblaydia in Sao Salvador in what may be 1st Place up for grabs. Regardless, the entire country supports and has great optimism for the national football team for the matches going forward.
FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!
