Andromeda Eagles @ Gor Kebab
Saturday Afternoon

Ten minutes have passed in the first half. After a brief kerfuffle between JD Campbell & a Kebab defender, Campbell breaks away. The other Andromeda front liners set up in their Eagle offense. Oona Kerry and Dolfo Martinez, the Eagles’ high scorers, take the wings while Steffi Tucker stands in front of the goalkeeper. Kerry and Martinez are both double-teamed.

“What you gonna d…,”

“Shut up.” Campbell silences the Kebab defender.

“Surfin’ Bird!” Campbell calls the play.

Tucker looks confused.

“OooMoo-Mao-Mao. Maa-Maa. OooMao-Mao.”

Tucker understands.

Campbell sees that Tucker has one hand on her defender and one finger in the air. Campbell head fakes his defender and kicks the ball in the general direction of the goal. Tucker runs away from her defender toward the ball. She shoots the ball before her defender can regain his bearings. The ball bounces past the goalie.

Andromeda 1, Gor Kebab 0.

----------

The first half rolls into injury time. There are sone dark clouds rolling over the pitch, threatening rain. The Kebabs have possession and have maneuvered past the midfield.

“Red Rover.” Goalie Rachel Medrano calls the play. Dave Richman and Kelly Bach move toward the goal to assist Medrano while Abby Salliewhite goes out to chase the ball.

“He’s got you, Sallie. You can’t do it,” Medrano yells.

Upon hearing this, Abby Salliewhite steals the ball from her defender. Upon seeing this, Bach walks over to Medrano.

“Didn’t Coach Zimmerman tell us to be more positive?”

“You’re a fifth-year senior at our country’s most prestigious university and you don’t know that certain psychology doesn’t work the same with everyone?”

“How’ that?”

“You tell someone like Sally that she can’t do something, the first thing she’ll do is try to prove you wrong.”

“But how did you know she would do that?”

Medrano shrugs her shoulders.

“The Force is strong with Rachel,” Dave Richman explains.

----------

Coach Hawkins makes a call midway through the second half.

“Brea, Cha-Cha, you’re in.”

Brea Young and Carla DiGregorio go in, replacing Oona Kerry and Steffi Tucker on the front line. Coach Zimmerman goes along with Hawkins’ decision.

“I’m not sure it was the right decision?”

“Jasmine. We needed to do something to change the dynamic. There are worse things we can do than change uniforms and have a more positive attitude.”

“But you got them souped up. You’ve promised them a spot in the World Cup if we win out.”

“No, I didn’t. They’re smart kids. They know that even if, by some miracle, we win out, the breaks may still be against us. We do our best in the face of all that.”

Zimmerman points at the front line. Carla DiGregorio makes a bicycle kick for the Eagles second goal of the night.

Andromeda 2, Gor Kebab 0.

After the celebration dies down, Zimmerman and Hopkins continue their conversation.

“Jasmine, if we win out, even if we don’t make the World Cup, we’ll crush it in the Cup of Harmony.”

“Kerri, are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

“Cha Cha starting against Eura?”

“Our third leading scorer shouldn’t be coming off the bench.”

----------

As time ticks away, it appears that the Eagles will celebrate their second win in a row. As Coach Zimmerman puts her things on a bench, Oona Kerry talks to her.

“Thank you, Coach.”

“For what?”

“For giving us something to hope for, instead of something to run from.”

“You’re welcome, Oona.”

Zimmerman realizes that her words may be construed by her players as more than just motivational noise. Her words matter to her players.

Mustardy 3–4 Flavovespia

In an exciting and enthralling game of football in the tiny principality of Mustardy, Flavovespia finally ended their losing streak with a 3-4 win against Mustardy. A game that contained a lot of action and drama, but one thankfully the visitors came out on top of.

A big shock for Flavovespia came in their starting line up. James King, one of the talisman of Flavovespia’s national team, was not in the starting 11. Instead, an all Hadford Hill duo of Alan Holt and Nigel Humphries lined up in the midfield, with the 4-2-2-2 favoured. Ian Pitchford also started ahead of Ronald Maddox in the defence.

The match started with enthusiasm and passion from both sides. Mustardy lined up in the Johan Speck Nationalstadion Heronne in their all mustard kits. Flavovespia meanwhile, lined up in an all black away kit. An unusual game certainly for many of the away side, the small stadia and tiny size of their opponents gave this the feel of the atmosphere of a cup game was a Challenge League or Western/Eastern League side. Nevertheless, Mustardy were more than capable opponents against Flavovespia.

Although the game seemed pretty even to begin with, it was the 20th minute when the first goal was scored. Ian Johnson whipped in a corner kick from the right hand side. Nigel Humphries made a run from the deep and got to the ball first with his head. He put it beyond Hervé Groben and into the net. Humphries had his first international goal, and the score was now 0-1 to the visitors.

It didn’t take long before the lead was doubled. Steven Hall broke clear down the wing, and sent a cross into the box. Terence Daley rose highest, above Jan-Bart Klumper, and nodded the ball accurately into the corner of the goal. Groben had little chance to keep it out, and Flavovespia took a 0-2 lead in this encounter after 23 minutes.

Mustardy weren’t going to go down without a fight however. Just 2 minutes after Flavovespia’s second goal, Jacquet Nee picked up the ball 27 metres from goal. Nee decied he needed no additional help, and went for broke with a shot from distance. He got the perfect combination of power and curl on the ball, and Meehan had no chance as it flew in just inside his far post. 1-2 now, in a highly competitive game.

There were no more goals in the first half, but the game wasn’t short on action. Both teams seemed to be in a competitive mood, and even with Flavovespia’s lead, it felt like it could be anyone’s game with the way the match and the whole qualifiers had been going.

Into the second half, and Flavovespia played with a cautious optimism. The defensive 2 of the midfield made few forward runs, but the front 4 were still putting pressure on Mustardy, and looking to score rather than simply not concede. Flavovespia wanted more goals, but were cautious of losing a precarious lead.

The 60th minute saw Flavovespia extend the lead to 2 goals. It was Steven Hall who got the visitor’s 3rd goal. He continued to dominate his flank with some great dribbling. A quick one-two with Scott Coleman left the Mustardy defence and keeper out of position, and Hall had the space to place the ball into the back of the net, to make it 1-3.

Mustardy were undeterred and quickly got back into the game with their second goal. Jacquet Nee played the ball to the feet of Guy Vérany. Vérany was held up by Neil Wright, but quickly flicked the ball back through to Nee. Nee hit the ball in stride, and placed it beyond Meehan to score, and give Mustardy a fighting chance of points from this game.

With the game finely balanced, Crawford made some defensive changes. Alan Holt made way for Henrik Jensen and David Michael was replaced with Jonathan Feld. The two subs were experienced players for Flavovespia, and Crawford hoped their experience would get them through this game.

82 minutes into the game, and with Mustardy attacking with more going forward, they were hit on the break. A corner saw the ball hoofed away by Neil Wright. Club teammate Scott Coleman picked it up on the halfway line, cleared the one defender left back and was one on one with the keeper Groben. Coleman dribbled past him, and tapped the ball into the empty net to make it 2-4, and to give Coleman an impressive 7 goals from 7 games.

Mustardy weren’t out of it yet. With 2 minutes to go plus stoppage time, a ball hit into the box fell for Stan Dereumaux, who did just enough to knock the ball beyond Meehan and the Flavovespia defenders closing in to make it 3-4. Mustardy still had fight in them, an ensured a nail-biting finale for all invested in this game.

Flavovespia were able to stop Mustardy from having any more chances. The game would finish an enthralling 3-4, a match certainly enjoyed by the neutrals, but maybe less so for fans of both sides. Nevertheless, Flavovespia finally ended a poor run of form, and got their 4th win of the qualifiers, and their 3rd away from home.

Flavovespia are now on 15 points, slightly ahead of the pre-tournament target and World Cup Qualifiers 83 performance. With 4 points between then and 5th placed Mitra and Soma, the most realistic highest placing is probably now 5th, however there will likely be hope they can at least get to 7th place.

Post Match Interviews

Richard Crawford on the result “A win is a win, and we showed very good attacking quality. Mustardy aren’t a bad team at all, and they gave us a strong fight. However I think we’ve finally got some of the quality we have shining through, and I hope we carry it on.”

Richard Crawford on the teams form “Well we’ve won 3 and lost 3. It’s 1.5 points per game. If we keep that up, we may not qualify for World Cups, but for now that’s a target to aim for at least. However, I do think the next 4 games will be tough.”

Richard Crawford on James King’s absence “He wasn’t feeling 100% after the Mitra and Soma game, and he had a minor ankle injury. We evaluated him after some light training, but didn’t feel it was right to play him. It’s no conspiracy, just a small injury.”

Steven Hall on the match “Well it was exciting, don’t know if the lads will quite agree yet! But I’m glad we’ve won, I’ve felt like a win has been coming, and I’m glad the lads got it. Hopefully more come soon now, but for now I’m going to enjoy this win and my goal.”

Nigel Humphries on scoring his first goal “It is a brilliant feeling. We practice these sort of routines, and I am very pleased it worked out. It is only sinking in at the moment that I have scored for Flavovespia, it is such an honour.”

A History of Football in Flavovespia

Part 14

In 37BU, the first expansion of the GWNFA Super League would begin. Hudson Harrison, still head of the GWNFA at this time had an agreement with the GCC and ICCF to allow the winners of their 2 competitions to be the next 2 Super League sides. For the Inter City Cup, this would prove to be a fitting finale, as the ICCF had decided due to the fall of income from the formation of the GWNFA Super League, the tournament would cease to continue after this point.

Many questioned whether or not it was right that cup winners would be the decider on who would join the Super League. For some, there were concerns that a knockout cup wouldn’t accurately determine the best teams for expansion. The fear of a small team going on a miracle run wasn’t exactly unfounded based on historical precedent. There were also arguments of how relevant the cups were now, seeing as the GWNFA Super League sides were no longer participating. Nevertheless that expansion method was chosen.

The final of the Inter City Cup saw Langmere Green Rovers FC face Towerhaite Sports Society. The former went in slightly favoured, and took a 2-0 victory and thus a place in the GWNFA Super League for 36BU. The ICCF had also announced that this would be the last edition of the cup. Due to declining viewing figures and the loss of several big names, they no longer felt the tournament was no longer a viable competition given its ethos, and chose to finish with the finale of a GWNFA Super League place.

The Gold Cup seem to be much more competitive with a GWNFA Super League place at stake, but that didn’t stop the upsets coming. By the final 16, a few non-league sides were still in, with West Waldster FC making it all the way to the quarter finals. The semi finals saw Narrock Wood United take a 3-2 AET victory over Langmere Green Rovers. In the other, one of the fiercest derby matches between Binclestead Wood and Bavingtor. It was 1-1 and went to penalties. Despite the hostile atmpsohere behind the goal, the visitors held their nerve to win in sudden death in penalties. It would all be for nothing though, as Narrock Wood United took a narrow 0-1 win in the final.

After the expansion of the GWNFA Super League, Butterfield Rovers switched from the Eastern Alliance to the United Football League, and would go on to win it in 36BU. The United Football League were keen to return to an even number of teams following the departure of Narrock Wood United, but there was a bit of an embarrassment when their “new kid on the block” went and won it. This would see the United Football League sides start to increase their spending, to try and improve their competitiveness.

Elsewhere the Waldster League and Eastern Alliance maintained their 12 teams with 1 up and 1 down promotion and relegation system. The leagues however were beginning to be somewhat plagued by an increasing separation between the top and bottom teams, with the top teams paying full-time wages for players, making them comfortably well off, and not too far off the pay of fringe GWNFA Super League players. At the bottom, although players were “professional”, some were working second jobs to supplement their football income.

The Western Association had similar issues to the above 2 leagues, and had 16 teams in 2 regional divisions of 8, with a neutral site final. This caused some dispute among the other leagues, as all 16 teams were granted Round 2 Gold Cup places, despite allegations of their competitiveness, especially among the bottom clubs. Ultimately despite these disputes, the GCC seemed fit to maintain a Round 2 spot for all of the 4 professional regional league sides, regardless of their perceived professionalism and competitiveness.

The GWNFA Super League would continue to flourish in this period. Although it was 10th for Narrock Wood United in their first 3 seasons, Langmere Green Rovers would quickly become a competitive opponent and in just their 2nd season, beat fierce rivals Loxthorpe Rovers in the final standings. By 34BU, the GWNFA were ready to continue expansion of their marquee league. Furthermore the Big 3’s dominance at the was weakening, and in 35BU, Kings Lunsel became the first non-Big 3 winner of the GWNFA Super League, and arguably the first side since Carston Green outside of the Big 3 to be the best side in the nation.

Sighing, Wesley set down his controller for the game of WCQ84 he'd been playing. "Maybe I was a little too hard on Willow," he conceded. "Managing a football team is hard. Especially achieving success with low-ranked sides!"

"The verisimilitude is pretty good, though," Naomi pointed out. "I mean, they have the right vantage points from the stands, and I like the character-generation engine."

"True," said Wesley, flipping through his laptop instead. "Hey, do you read the Rocket Report?"

"I mean, I'm not subscribed to it," said Naomi. "But sometimes, yeah. Why?"

"They were trying to explain the importance of Stacey Keisler to an international audience, and they said she's, like, the Simeone di Bradini of baseball. Is that true?"

Naomi thought for a moment, then glowered. "No."

"No? But, like, there was a series of age-restricted tournaments in baseball named after Keisler. Just like there was a series of age-restricted tournaments in football named after di Bradini."

"So what?" said Naomi. "Age-restricted tournaments are dumb. They're just for, like, countries that have consistent and reasonable aging systems and don't handwave vague nonsense about time dilation all the time."

"I think there are a lot of talented and successful countries that do that, actually," Wesley pointed out.

"Whatever," said Naomi. "We've never been in one, so I don't care."

"Now you're the nationalist? And technically Zwangzug did try to send a college all-star team to Keisler Cup 6, before Newmanistan abruptly receded from the international scene."

"That one wasn't age-restricted, though," Naomi said smugly, "so it doesn't count."

"Yes it--never mind. Look, there's a big stadium in Newmanistan named after Keisler. Just like there's a big stadium in Starblaydia named after di Bradini."

"For Starblaydia it's their one big home stadium, Newmanistan have a bunch of different facilities. Multisport arenas, I assume. And countries name stadiums after famous people all over the world."

"All right, well. di Bradini won four World Cups, and Keisler won two World Baseball Classics."

"di Bradini's were as coach of the Holy Empire, that doesn't count."

"Sure it does! How many people can you say have won one international sports tournament as a manager, much less four?"

"The Holy Empire people live indefinitely, you can't compare their timespan to normal people."

"Look, I think I've made my case pretty well. You wanna tell me why we shouldn't compare Keisler to di Bradini?"

"Simple," Naomi said. "Keisler was better."

Wesley raised his eyebrows. "Good luck convincing anyone of that."

"Keisler, as you so nicely pointed out, won two WBCs as a player. di Bradini didn't win any World Cups in his playing career." Naomi held up a warning hand before Wesley could interject. "And before you say that the quality of competition was more difficult, let me point out to you that Starblaydia, from World Cup 25 onward, have won five World Cups. Nunzio Gre, David Bedford, Jaime Kuu--all great names that have helped guide the purple side to the top of the world. Any of them has a more legitimate claim to exceptional glory than di Bradini."

"You can be a phenomenal player on a middling side," Wesley argued, "and how do you know all the names of those players anyway? Are you a Starblaydia fan?"

"Absolutely not, but there's a very nice historical mode in WC84Q. You can browse through the Hall of Fame, here."

"Is this a legit copy?" Wesley asked. "Or did you pirate it from somewhere?"

Naomi ignored him. "Now. Who is the current president of Newmanistan?"

"I have no idea."

"Correct, that was a trick question. How about their current emperor?"

"Oh...huh...I still don't know. I wanna say...Michael? Michael somebody? That rings a bell."

"Also correct, it's Emperor Michael V."

"Okay. And, what does this have to do with Stacey Keisler?"

"Nothing." Wesley spluttered, but Naomi kept going. "I'm reasonably confident the person you were thinking of wasn't Michael V, the current head of state, but rather Michael IV, who took over from his sister, a famous and powerful Empress of Newmanistan when it first rose to prominence. Do you know who that monarch is?"

"Oh!" Wesley blinked. "It's Empress Jessica, right?"

"Yes," said Naomi. "See, that was an easier question to answer, wasn't it? When you think of Newmanistan, you think of Empress Jessica, even though she passed away some time ago."

"Yeah, well, she was influential and stuff."

"So she was. She came to personify the nation abroad, to serve as a symbol of the country and its leadership and interests even after her lifetime. That's the correct parallel with di Bradini, not Keisler."

"Correct parallel? You make it sound like this is a standardized test."

"You started it."

"Well technically that wasn't a quote from the Rocket Report, I just paraphrased a little--"

"Keisler pitched a perfect game," Naomi said. "What has di Bradini done on the pitch that compares to that?"

"To be fair," Wesley said, "a lot of people have pitched perfect games. WBC history is weird."

"Name one Zwangzugian who's pitched a perfect game. I'll wait."

"Does the domestic league count?"

"No."

"If it was one of those no-hitters where they technically still lose--"

"That's not a perfect game, is it, and anyway you're still talking about the domestic league."

"Look, di Bradini is famous beyond Starblaydia, whether you want to admit it or not. Why can't you accept that fans in other countries know and admire him?"

"Being famous just because your country has a press corps dedicating to tooting your own horn isn't an achievement."

"Starblaydia's press corps is a lot more professional than many less-accomplished countries who toot the horns of their star athletes."

"That is true," Naomi admitted. "But they're also twerps."

"What?"

"Twerps. Disappearing in fits of pique, then returning and having the audacity to be good at sports again. What kind of nation does that?"

"You could say the exact same thing for Newmanistan," Wesley said. "In fact, I just did, with regards to the short-lived Keisler Cup 6."

Naomi frowned, unwilling to admit he did have a point there. "I'm going back to WCQ84," she finally said. "Playing as an unranked side is hard, but it's less frustrating than arguing with you."

The scenes were being replicated at dozens of different locations across the sportiverse. Stadiums (stadia, stadia, etc) became cauldrons of noise and emotion as once again World Cup points were on the line. The Sargossan capital was no exception. The planned city, hacked out of Sargosso’s forested interior where the mighty Corazal river met the somewhat less mighty Duro, gave the sprawling archipelago a centralised administrative centre, away from the traditional powerbases of the coastal metropolises. Consequently it had gained a reputation as a haunt of the nouveau riche, a snobby centre of elitism and exclusivity. A reputation well represented by its football crowds. Whereas matchdays at the massive Independiente in Goza or San Marquez’s quint Estadio Silva were noted for their festival nature. For their colour and their passion. Crowds at the Estadio Generalissimo Joaquín Delgado were instead labelled as fickle and moody. Accurately, in fairness.

The game against Audioslavia had demonstrated that quite nicely. With bitter memories of defeat here to Acronius still raw being 2 – 1 down to the Bulls had seen the atmosphere go from chilly to poisonous in the blink of an eye. Then Sergio Espina levelled from the penalty spot and the crowd located a bit of enthusiasm again. More so as Rodrigo Defederico’s side surged forward, remembering that they can actually play a bit. The visitors may have the historical resonance, but the Corsairs happen to be top seeds in this group for a reason. Murillo was ghosting between defenders, Goyoso was pinging the ball around with aplomb and Muñoz was relentless in the tackle (that’s what she said and such). Gradually finesse went out the window as the ball was hoicked into the box at every available opportunity. Thousands prayed that something would give. Something did.

Saul Escribano’s attempted whipped delivery from the left was charged down but he recovered to pick up the rebound. He took a look and lofted a ball into the penalty area. It dropped towards Diego Alejandro Costa who had found some space. His body twisted as, in his head, he connected with the cross full on the volley and unleashed an unstoppable drive into the top corner. In reality, he scuffed it. But the ball slapped into the turf and bobbled wide Ángel Clavel and nestled into the bottom corner. Happily the technical proficiency of the goal is less likely to be remembered than the fact that, at the final whistle, Sargossa had beaten Audioslavia by three goals to two.

Cup of Harmony almost certainly the destination as Islander Qualification hopes

Image
Busoga Islander fans at Orange Field for a pre World Cup Qualification friendly

LAKISKA, SOUTH ISLAND- The Busoga Islands, since these groups were drawn in Belle Haven, have always known that they had an extremely tough draw to try and reach their first ever World Cup Finals. The Main Nation Ministry and Chromatika both in their group, teams that the Busoga Islands played in their playoff group last time around. Being the Pot 4 side in an 11 team group where only the top two can qualify for the Finals directly. And, of course, the fact that Mriin was the top ranked side in the group. It was always going to be a tall order. Would World Cup 83 be known as the chance that got away?

And originally, of course, the Islanders were competitive in this group. Keeping pace and giving chase to the other big three teams in the group, they had good results against each of them. An away victory over the Main Nation Ministry, by a score of 3-2. A 0-0 draw in front of a record-setting crowd at the Dukuma Oval against Mriin. And a crucial 2-2 draw, also away from home, against Chromatika. And then, of course, consistency against the teams that we were supposed to beat. A third of the way through the Qualifying campaign, we were just a single point behind Chromatika for the second qualification spot, and were right in the thick of the battle, thinking that it could go down to the wire.

But then, things began to fall apart and get worse for the Islanders. The lack of depth in the national team setup quickly became apparent, and things started to snowball and spiral for this team. An away loss to Kavagrad isn't the end of the world, but it meant a spot in the table. They went from being 1 point off the pace, to 4 points off the pace- and that, unfortunately, ended up being the turning point of the campaign for the Islanders. When they followed that up with an ugly, 4-3 home loss against Lons- the Islanders famed defense getting carved repeatedly, by a lesser talented team, at their home field no less, fans had to know that the dream of making the Finals would not come true during this World Cup cycle.

After that Lons loss, they were all of a sudden 7 points behind. That's how quickly things can turn in Qualifying- one day you're right there, and just two matchdays later, you're way off in the distance. Of course, there was still plenty of time left in the campaign, but those were a pair of tough losses to stomach. THey'd need to really step up their game in the rest of the campaign if they wanted to Qualify directly for the World Cup Finals, and surely, did they try. They notched back to back away victories against the Plane of Possibility and Northwest Kalactin to get things sort of back on track.

And then, came the game against Chromatika. The home game at the cricket ground in Lakiska. Entering the game just 4 points behind Chromatika. Observers from the Islands knew that it was a must win. BISA thanked the heavens that this was one of the two games they had picked to move to a bigger venue. The match's importance to the campaign, and yet a third looming fiercely competitive match between Chromatika and the Busoga Islands, who are becoming serious rivals to each other, warranted the move, and the larger ground was filled to its capacity. If the Busoga Islands won, they'd really blow the group wide open. It'd be ultra competitive once more, with just a point separating 4th and 2nd, and the Islanders would have as good of a chance as anybody.

Former Galactico and Chromatika superstar Kaytlyn Victoriane contracting the flu only brought up the hopes of the Busoga Islands. But, on this day, the superior quality of the Chromatika side showed its power. It would be the visitors who would open up the scoring, but Sarika Birla equalized to make it 1-1. The fans in the stadium could feel the go-ahead goal coming. They were goading the home side to keep attacking, and STarfire's squad was obliging. Sarika Birla looked surely to have her second goal that would put the Islanders in front, but a brilliant one on one save by the visiting goalkeeper kept her out.

A free kick put the Islanders down 2-1. The Chromatika Galactico, flu and all, came on and scored a fantastic goal to put her side up 3-1, and effectively, end the Islanders dreams. Now, of course one might say, we are still pursuing the World Cup Finals? But that loss, to make a 7 point gap between the two sides, meant that the hill might be a bit too steep for the Busoga Islands to try and climb. Even though we followed that match with a pair of 1-0 wins, our latest 2-0 loss away to Zealandiana makes the task that much tougher. We're 8 points behind Chromatika's pace with just 5 games left to play, and we still have to host the Main Nation Ministry, and travel to Maal.

We're still alive, mathematically- but functionally, Mriin and Chromatika remain the favorites to reach the Finals, with the Main Nation MInistry still coming in hot consider they have a game in hand on both of those teams. What does that mean for the national team? Well, our sights are set on the Cup of Harmony. Likely to garner an invitation to the tournament, with Xanneria and Banija likely to host, we'll hope to make an impact at that major tournament. We haven't advanced to the knockout stages of a major tournament since the Baptism of Fire, and we have never won a knockout stage game at a major tournament.

Those are still good goals to attain, for a country the size of the Busoga Islands. There will be pressure on Starfire to improve the major tournament record at that tournament. The team has seen good progress under her, obviously peaking at the last campaign, but this Qualification campaign, being functionally eliminated at this stage with so many matches left, will see her critics come out of the woodworks. She's signed through the end of the cycle, so she will be on the touchline at the Cup of Harmony. We'll see how the Equestrian can keep the team motivated for the rest of the campaign, and how she will use it to prepare for the Cup of Harmony.

FOOTBALL: WORLD CUP 84 QUALIFIERS
Pula Garudas 'must be confident' in last six matches, says Sudirman

Lublova, SQUORNSHELAN REMNANT STATES - Krisna Hendra Sudirman is rallying his troops for the homestretch of Filindostan's sixth World Cup qualifying campaign.

After a 2-0 win over Bliuji in front of a full-packed crowd at Filindostan National Stadium, the current manager of the national team have urged his players to keep their energy high and perform well in their succeeding matches, which will 'surely help' in determining their fate as they continue chasing Ziwana and Qasden for the qualifying spot which have evaded them for the past five qualifying campaigns. Their away match at the Slavnarzeczpospolitastadion is seen as crucial and must-win, as the two teams above them, the Akambuku, and the Vans, are clashing with each other at the Izula National Stadium, and the former Venividicci manager sees this as an opportunity to close the gap to either teams, knowing that Filindostan host the current second placers after the SRS visit, and Qasden still to play South Covello, Group 8's runaway leaders as of this stage.

Filindostan have been close to qualifying in two of the past five attempts of making the World Cup. In the same edition where they came in as Baptism of Fire winners, the archipelago from central Esportiva mounted a challenge to group favorites and multi-time World Cup champions Vilita and Starblaydia, and beat the latter 5-1, before inexplicably losing to Cosneolta the next matchday, and despite a win at home against Red Blackiland, the Filindos just missed out by a few points. Uneventful qualifying campaigns for WC80 and WC81 followed, where they replaced winning manager Willy Gurnawan with Equestrian Twilight Striker, but at WC82, they mounted another challenge for the World Cup finals against the Starblaydia again, and sporting multiverse powerhouse Cassadaigua, who eliminated the Filindos in the quarterfinals of a previous Cup of Harmony. They, at one point mounted a strong performance at the middle of the qualifying campaign after a poor start which costed Twilight Striker's job, and at one point, led the qualifying group with two matchdays remaining. A collapse at home to Britaen meant that even a win against the Sherpas on the final day of the campaign, they would fall short once again of the finals. An ignominious campaign the next edition and the poor start this edition had Xavier Rinoso step down from his job, and Sudirman is slowly building back the trust and confidence the people lost to the national team in recent history.

Filindos turn it around in the goal scoring department

By the halfway point of the qualifiers, Filindostan had the fewest goals scored of all teams in Group 8 - 13 goals, even less than cellar-dwellers Furby Island which have 14. The team failed to score in 2 matches, and have never scored more than two goals each match before. They also even failed to record a single clean sheet prior to the goalless draw at Vakolicci Haven and Celeria. This was also one of the reasons the Federation gave up on caretaker manager Iqbal Prasetyo, and chose to splash cash to purchase the rights for Sudirman. Since losing 4-1 to hosts Baker Park, Filindostan have scored 11 goals in four matches, including two clean sheets in their recent matches to turn around a squad which lost much confidence during Rinoso's and Prasetyo's time at the helm.

Filindostan hopes to win all their remaining matches and other matches go their way if they to have any chance to pip Ziwana or Qasden for the second qualifying spot in Group 8.

Continuation of following storyline

Kabaka - King
Luguba - Queen Consort
Sarauniya - Queen Mother
Isebantu - Crown Prince
Omugabe/Omugaba - Prince/Princess
Omulangira/Kyabazinga - Duke/Duchess
Kagere/Kiweewa - Lord/Lady
Katikkiro - Prime Minister
Waziri - Foreign Minister
Lukiiko- Parliament
Kiongozi- Leader of the Opposition

Setting is Stelburg, Teusland

The Isebantu knew that he was. functionally, going to have a working lunch. THe two sides broke off into separate rooms for lunch- there was a lot of good things that were put onto the table by Chancellor Meier, and of course, they wanted a chance to discuss his points amongst themselves before the Isebantu brought back the official Banijan response. It did indeed look as if the United Republics and the Kingdom were very close to striking some sort of agreement, that would be mutually beneficial to both nations.

But of course, discussion on the Banijan side during lunch was dominated by one topic- the discussion of a strategic alliance of states within the Glorious Southwest. It would be a major initiative- a multilateral strategic reliance. Banija had not had much experience with those- technically, the only international government organization they were in at the time would be the Quebecois Commonwealth of Nations. It was an interesting discussion at the Banijan lunch. As they enjoyed Teuslander delicacies from their hosts, most people around the table agreed- a regional alliance would, and should, be something that the Banijans were willing to sign. However, they needed to get input from Busukuma itself. ANy sort of alliance would, of course, have to go through the Lukiiko, and there was no guarantee he could get one ratified. And, of course, the Kabaka himself would have to be appraised.

Fortunately, they were in the modern era. The lunch room came with a secure phone. So the Isebantu dialed home, and the Kabaka was put on the phone. "Father, Your Majesty, how are you doing?"

"I am doing well." Replied the Kabaka on the phone. "How is Teusland, Mutungi? How are talks going?"

"They are going well, Father." Said Isebantu Mutungi. "The Chancellor has responded well to most of our proposals. We have been assured that Naval purchases, including ships, are likely to be approved after we go through Siovanijan & Teuslander processes. They also shared a goal of establishing a naval exchange program, down the road, as well. They invited Admiral Dione to visit the United Republics' Naval headquarters, an invitation that he will, of course, accept. They were open to the idea of a consulate in St. Jakob, and them opening one in Istria. They also wanted to establish twin cities ties between St. Jakob and Istria. We will be on the phone with them next, but I am sure they will accept. And are open to the idea of educational exchanges between schools in our two countries."

The Kabaka expressed his happiness over those. They talked over the details of those briefly, and then, the Isebantu talked about investors coming to the Kingdom to try and establish economic growth opportunities between the two countries. "The biggest thing that they have proposed, however, is a regional strategic alliance. One established between different states in the Glorious Southwest." And he went on and explained details that had been said by Chancellor Meier.

"Hmm, interesting." Said the Kabaka. "I would be interested in this. What nations would be involved? Would they invite the Islamic Republic?"

"We are not sure," Replied the Isebantu. "But we assume most Southwestern states would be invited."

"Ok. I like the idea. I'll give it my support." Said the Kabaka. "If the Islamic Republic is invited? We'll deal with that when we can. Don't worry about ratification of such a proposal by the Lukiiko. I can work with the Katikkiro to get it through. I imagine that it would- though of course, with the Islamic Republic, it would be clearly a tougher task. But we'll get it. Make sure Belle Haven is invited to join this strategic alliance as well- Prime Minister Schoenlein, would be happy to join such an organization, as they are right on the edge of the GSW."

"OK, thank you Your Majesty!" They talked briefly more, and then hung up. The rest of the delegation began working the phones for the rest of the lunch. The Isebantu himself called the Mayor of Istria's office, and they talked about the twin cities proposal. The Mayor was, of course, on board. Other members of his delegations called various universities, talking about educational exchange programs. OF course, with the country's two largest universities, Northern Moravica and Loyola-Istria, on board, it wasn't hard to find a few others to join as well. Others called the Banijan Hockey Federation and representatives from the RBSA, talking about the sporting proposals. And then, as the lunch ended, both sides headed back into the room.

"Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen." Isebantu Mutungi began. "That was quite a productive morning session, was it not? And, I dare say, an effective lunch as well. But let's dive right back into it. Our team has made a number of phone calls during lunch, in order to ensure that we can hammer out an effective agreement while I am here in Stelburg.

"First, we'll start with the biggest thing here. The idea of a strategic alliance. This would be a major undertaking- one of such importance, to our belief, that it warranted a call directly back to Busukuma from myself. I am happy to say the Kabaka is fully supportive of the idea of a strategic alliance between Southwestern nations. Subregional cooperation is something that is important, but without intentionality between the nations here, it simply won't happen. We would be supportive of any efforts to ensure that this could happen, and would be willing to work with any nations in this subregions. If any sort of alliance is formed, of course, we would also support the inclusion of Baker Park. Even though they are technically not Southwestern, they are involved in this region, and have been longtime allies of Banija, as well as worked closely with other nations in this region for quite a while."

The Isebantu nodded, and then continued. "Admiral Dione has studied the specifications of both the Ljublanica-class destroyer and the Eiche-class frigate, and he and I agree that both are in the best interests of the Royal Banijan Navy. ANd we are happy that a foreign sale can be approved to our Naval forces. Admiral Berg, I will ensure that Admiral Dione can work out the technical details with yourself, but we are certainly interested in making purchases of both the destroyer and the frigate."

The Isebantu then sat down, and Admiral Dione stood up. "These ships are excellent, and of course, a testament to your country's engineering skill. This will be a priority of ours as we continue to rebuild and strengthen our Navy. We are also glad that we share similar long-term goals in terms of officer educational exchanges. We understand that doing so so soon might not be realistic, but if we work towards it intentionally, we can get to the place where that will be possible. I would also like to say, Admiral Berg, that I do accept your invitation to visit headquarters in St. Jakob. That would be beneficial for both of our countries."

The Admiral then sat down, and the Isebantu stood up. "Thank you. Now, as for the next topic- consulates. We are pleased that you have agreed to allow us to establish a consulate in St. Jakob. We are also very pleased with our intention to build a consulate in Istria. We will, of course, accept and encourage that, as that will certainly improve economic relations between our countries. The Mayor of Istria is also in full support of St. Jakob am Drai and Istria becoming twin cities to each other. Each the largest city in their respective nation, each with a multicultural population."

The Isebantu grabbed his water bottle, and took a large swig. He then continued. "Sports are a great way to interconnect nations. Of course, in Banija, both the Royal Banijan Soccer Association(RBSA) and the Banijan Hockey Federation(BHF) and their leagues are privately operated, although of course the RBSA has a royal charter, henceforth how it is titled the Royal Banijan Soccer Association. After placing some calls, it seems to us as if the BHF would be interested in your proposal. They are doing their best to grow the sport in the country, and bringing a world-class league like the Ehrenliga to play in Istria, or Herzegovina City, would certainly help that. As for the Republikaliga, media companies are truly growing in Banija, and we imagine that a broadcasting deal could easily be found for the Republikaliga within Banija. The BSL is looking to get their own media rights abroad as well, and I am sure that they would consider the United Republics a target market."

"We are happy that Siovanija & Teusland are open to student exchanges. Our two biggest universities, the University of Loyola-Istria and Northern Moravica University, are both interested in establishing such programs. Other universities, as well, like U of Ankole and Kizza I College, are interested. We will ensure our people get in contact with yours. At the secondary school level, we also feel as if this would be mutually beneficial. The Ministry of Education will, after this summit, be in contact with interested local school districts within our nation and get back to yours to establish those ties."

The Isebantu took one more swig. "We believe that a trade agreement between the United Republics and the Kingdom woudl also be something that is mutually beneficial for our nations. As you mentioned, our economy is developing, and yet, we believe that we are on the cusp of truly starting to see our economic potential. The oil boom is a big part, of course, but investment of the oil boom into other sectors can really help us. After reading through this pamphlet, there are many areas where we feel as if our cooperation will work out greatly. The auto industry is a great example. Banija's is, well.... Non-existent isn't exactly the word, but it is not a strength of ours."

"We would be glad to welcome investors and companies to an investment conference in the Kingdom. We also believe that technology and scientific research have a future in this country. Cooperation in those sectors would be good. We would also believe that a free trade agreement would be a good thing for both countries."

"Of course, what would we want in a free trade agreement? In Banija, we would grant something called favored nation status, to Siovanija & Teuslander exports to Banija. This is something that has been granted to both the Commonwealth of Baker Park, the Royal Kingdom of Quebec, and the Echani Republic, previously. It would allow Siovanijan and Teuslander companies to apply, on an individual basis, for trusted trader practices, to essentially lower scrutiny of products at the border. It would allow products that are sold in Banija to meet Siovanija & Teusland product standards, as long as the Banijan Ministry of Commerce determines S&T product standards for any said product to be 'relatively equal or stronger' than Banijan standards. It would allow S&T companies to sell dual-use technology in Banija. It would also take down barriers to S&T investment in Banija, allowing investment in industries we consider 'sensitive', like technology and finance. It would essentially allow S&T investment into basically all industries in Banija besides agriculture and oil. It would also lower tariffs and pave the way for a tax treaty to be included in any trade agreement. A tax treaty, of course, would prevent double taxation of income earned in Banija by S&T companies, and vice versa. We would want a tax treaty on both a corporate and an individual level. Assuming something similar can be granted back to Banija, we would like to structure a trade agreement along those lines."

"This was, again, quite a bit. I'll suggest we take another 10-15 minutes here?" Everyone nodded, and both sides started to discuss amongst themselves. The Isebantu himself sat down, and talked to the Admiral. They were discussing the particulars of the Naval side of things, and the economists with the Isebantu talked about the particulars of a trade deal. Everyone was waiting to see what would come next.

Back to square one

Postby Balqia » Wed Jan 01, 2020 11:51 am

Finally, Treneris left the locker room, the day training was over and everyone could return to their rooms. The chat started and everyone relaxed, everything was going well, but then Viktor ruined with all with a simple question.
-Hey, have you seen the news? Some protesters burned a car in Orsav.
The room got silent. No one answered, the culprit got a bit nervous and acted like it was not his fault. Things were going to be fine, but then Roronis opened his damn mount.
-I think everything will be back to normal soon, those vandals never endure against the state.
-In fact they have some good points, some freedom will not hurt anyone.
The disaster was set, Arian ruined the prospects of a calm day. Arguments between balqese people only ended when one of the parties admitted defeat, and those sort of thing never happened. When it come to politics it’s even worse.
-Guys, let’s not have another argument, we are finally recovering…
-SHUT UP MATIS!
Yelled both of them.
-Are you trying to got us all killed? The country is almost seeing a wave of protests and you want to praise them?
Roronis had a good point, those things shouldn’t be said in situations like those.
-Calm down, I just wanted to have a conversation.
-That would send us in a visit to our friend Nonoms.
Nonoms was a very delicate topic, since his act in the interview no notice of him appeared, the substituted were playing in his place until the Manager decides who will be the main player in his place. Roronis continued, nevertheless.
-You are a idiot, since the first day giving me headache…
Things got a bit personal over here.
-Whats this out of the blue? I never caused problems, I even started doing extra training and focusing in what you said to be the right thing to do!
It was a fact, Vartag became what Roronis said was the ideal thing to do after their discussion, Roronis, in the other side, just didn’t took that seriously and relaxed a lot more, both of them switched perspectives apparently.
-I don’t care, you just seem to sabotage the team. Your poor job is ruining us!
-What are you saying? Our performance improved a lot.
-Our first match against the Free Republics don’t agree.
-That was a decade ago, and I said it improved, not that it was always good.
-He’s right, man, just relax.
It was Torfin whom intervened in the discussion, he, and most of the players were not buying the free insults delivered by Roronis.
-You are in his side now?
-There are no sides, man, you are being a jerk.
And with that the discussion ended, seeing his numeric disadvantage Roronis left the locker room.
-What happened to him?
Everyone was astonished with that, the relations improved a lot since the start of the championship, but all of a sudden one of the players went mad.
-I’s just the Nonoms incident, these protest don’t help either. We should just forget about that.
Luniq said that, and he had a point, things got worse since the little incident, the Team got some victories, and if they returned to the initial stage of mutual hate things would just get bad again.
Soon everyone returned to their groups, some went to the baths, others went to their rooms. And just when things seemed to improve a hit was dealt because a player used some cocaine. At least they had hope in winning some more matches and getting a third or fourth place in the ranking. But, can the Team win when things started to fall apart?

The Wedding

Part Four.

CMB.

Bastion Fairways International

It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Or the Winter Holidays, as the folks in Eura seemed determined to call it. In Schottia it was generally referred to as Mid-Winter, although, in recent years, the word Christmas was slowly creeping in. Well, whatever the fuck it was starting to look like, Corinne Martel-Burns wasn’t the biggest fan of it – least of all, when it was only the first of December.

She was sat in the bar of the airport lounge, pint glass in hand, hopping that her black hoody would be enough to keep the worst of the fans at bay. The reputation she had gained in her youth - the various brushes with the law, and spiraling mental health issues - meant that folk were generally wary of her, but you couldn’t rule out the odd supporter chancing their luck. Connie had taken the extra precaution of positioning her chair behind a particularly bushy Winter Holiday tree, on the hope that it would obscure her at least partially.

“Just get through one day at a time.”

That had been Dr Durí’s advice, and she had been following it to the letter for the last six years.

Thirty next April… She hadn’t expected to live this long, let alone be playing football at the highest level. There were points, in her teens, where she thought she was finished – broken – but somehow she was still here. When Raven Cullen had given her a call last summer, and talked about coming back into the international fold, she’d almost run a mile. After an intense face-to-face meeting she had backed down however, and in hindsight, it was one of the best decisions she’d made. Cullen was an amazing woman, and Connie had taken to her from the off. It felt like a fresh start. Gone were the tactics of Jock Sonny and Eoin Killanen, which had seen them try to stifle teams. The Brenecian believed in attacking, high-tempo football, and that suited her. If this was Schottia starting again from scratch, then Connie was happy to be on board.

She looked up at the departure times, for the umpteenth time, relieved to see that there was still no delay. Her heavily mascaraed eyes fell back down onto her beer. The barman had tried to tempt her with an array of festive-themed cocktails, but she had withstood the temptation to hit the hard liquor at four in the morning. The normal conventions for alcohol consumption generally went out the window in airports… not that Connie had ever followed normal conventions. She was determined not to arrive back in Schottia pissed, but a couple of beers always helped with the shakes.

She still wasn’t sure any of this was even a good idea. Ross’ wedding was going to be… it was going to be something. But Connie didn’t do good ideas, that much had been long established, and, well… if nothing else, it would prove that she had moved on. She needed to see him happy, she needed that closure. Ross deserved to be happy. Everyone deserved happiness - Except for her? That wasn’t quite what she had meant. Connie had given up on finding happiness a long time ago. Stability and contentment were the best she could aim for now. She was doing well at Directus, holding down an apartment, a place in the first team, a semblance of a life. In Ceni she’d pissed it all up against a wall, and her time in Chromatika was so short she never even moved out of the hotel. She needed some time to put down some roots, and Eura had offered that at a vital time.

Connie had no idea what she was going to do when she got to the wedding, what she was going to wear, buy as a gift, where she would be sat, whom she could talk to… Come to think of it, her level of preparation was zero. She’d packed a rucksack, and she had she supposed she’d find a hotel somewhere in Belker, but other than that…

What was life without a few surprises.

Port Ember welcomes the new year!

The meeting of the dusk of the old year and the dawn of the new is seen as reason to celebrate with festivities all around the multiverse - and for the legions of Port Emberians who amassed at the Paradiso Beach in the Waterstad Borough of Port Ember Megalopolis yesterday for the most anticipated party of the year.

The legendary annual Gudfrey's New Year's Party is hosted and sponsored by the beloved Gudfrey's Trading Company at Paradiso Beach - one of the most beautifull and serene beaches found upon our tropical paradise islands. The party commenced at 31 December 08:00am and only ended on 01 January 08:00 am.

This year, a record attendance of 200 000 party-goers attended the legendary party - which suprisingly went off without a hitch, no serious deaths or injuries was reported to the Port Emberian Police Service present.

Let us take a closer look at the activities which took place at the 24 hour long party:

Miss Port Emberian Bikini

A model parade of the hottest aspiring bikini model talent hailing from the entire length and width of The Republic descended upon the parade in attempt to claim the title of this annual competition. This competition has been running for over 8 years, and does not merely serve the purpose of festival entertainment - but also as a talent scout oppertunity, to discover and develop aspiring models in this particularly rewarding yet challenging industry. The winner - Miss Eliose Green won this year, and a 5 year professional model contract with Model Industry giant - Ember Temptations - to boot.

New Years Aspiring Brewer's Derby

A Brewers competion of the hottest aspiring brewer talent hailing from the entire length and width of The Republic descended upon the parade in attempt to claim the title of this annual competition. This competition has been running for over 10 years, and does not merely serve the purpose of festival entertainment - but also as a talent scout oppertunity, to discover and develop aspiring brewers in this particularly rewarding yet challenging industry. The winner - Mister James De Groot won this year with his homemade Ember Pale Ale, and a fully paid scholarship to study for a Master Brewers degree at the world renowned Ember Culinary Arts University.

New Years Aspiring Master Chef Derby

A chef competion of the hottest aspiring chef talent hailing from the entire length and width of The Republic descended upon the parade in attempt to claim the title of this annual competition. This competition has been running for over 7 years, and does not merely serve the purpose of festival entertainment - but also as a talent scout oppertunity, to discover and develop aspiring chefs in this particularly rewarding yet challenging industry. The winner - Miss Sarah Ellis won this year with her homemade Seafood Feast Pot, and a fully paid scholarship to study for a Master Chef degree at the world renowned Ember Culinary Arts University.

New Years Gudfrey Regatta

The New Years Gudfrey Regatta is the oldest and most prestigious Regatta hosted within the Republic, and attracts sailing teams from accross the globe who wishes to claim the prestigious title and prize money.

The history and prestige associated with this Regatta attracts not only the world's top sailors and yacht designers but also the involvement of wealthy entrepreneurs and sponsors. It is a test not only of sailing skill and boat and sail design, but also of fundraising and management skills. Competing for the cup is expensive, with modern teams spending more than $US150 million NSD each. This year saw a record attendance, as 513 teams - hailing from more than 14 sovreign nations- entered the race , up from the 417 of last year - making it one of the largest races of its kind

This years winner was the defending champions - The Lilly Black Memorial Sail Team, winning the cup 5 times in a row - and taking home to $100 Million NSD prize money with a smile.

Car Show

A large car show seeing private collectors and car manufacturers alike was also held on the beach as part of the festivities. There was no central theme to the exibition, thus all sorts of cars were on display - from antiques and exotics to the ultra modern. Even the famous Reaver Automobiles had a display floor for festival-goers to observe the giant's future concept cars.

Recrational Sport

There was many recreational and informal sports played on the beach, open to everyone for their enjoyment. These included beach volleyball, surfing, touch rugby, tug-of-war and beach soccer.

The highlight of these activities was when the One and Only Port Ember National Team made an appearance, due to them being free due to New Years Break. The crowd went crazy to be faced with the wonderfull oppertunity of meeting their hero's, and many folk was given signatures and merchandise by the lads. The team also played a quick game of beach soccer with children who found themselves in the area.

Music for the soul!

Numurous bands and DJ's graced the Main Music Stage and performed their live music to the masses, establishing a almost magical atmosphere on the beach, neatly rounding off the perfect party. Among the bands who perfomed, was none other than the famous Black Sails Folk Rock band.

Fireworks Show

At exactly 00:00 a massive fireworks show commenced, visibly welcoming the new decade into our reality. More than 3 tons of fireworks were shot into the nightsky, making it the largest firework show in Port Emberian history.

Before the chartered flight out of Fennerby Airport in Portland took off to bring the Sarzonian national football team to Crystalline Caverns for an away match, the Stars had one more important item of business to attend to.

Celebrating the New Year.

After watching the ball drop in Nicksia's Rhiannon Pavilion to signify the start of 2020, a Stars reserve hit play on his media player.

"I'm Barbara Walters, and THIS ... is 2020."

Players, coaches, support staff all looked around the room. A couple cracked up. The celebratory hugs soon followed.

The Stars, having been mathematically eliminated from World Cup contention with five matches left were reduced to playing spoilers. Manager Kevin Connelly announced that he would start more depth players in the matches against the other teams in the same predicament. If the match was against a side that still had a shot, his first choice side would play.

The difference between the Christmas dinner and this New Year celebration was both a week on the calendar and a massive difference in team unity. This time, Charlie King was part of the festivities. This time, Mateo Sandoval was smiling and joking around with Connelly.

King was, too. Both players and Connelly settled their differences and sorted what needed sorting. With the air cleared, it was time for the champagne to flow.

Paolo Gomes would start in goal against Crystalline Caverns, and only Jake Campos and team captain Russ Howard would start among the usual 11. This time, the stakes weren't there for the team.

It was an unusual position for the Stars, a team that in years past were within a different result of qualifying for the proper in their first go. A team that was unranked and leading world No. 1 and two-time defending World Cup champion Valanora by two goals with 20 minutes left where a victory that would have shocked the multiverse would have sent the Stars to the World Cup group stage.

The Stars were not expected to do anything this time out. They had a team that barely knew each other and coalesced into a team later. But they showed signs of possible future success with a 3-2-1 win, draw, loss record beginning with their one-goal victory over fellow unranked side Atlantic Republic at Nottingham Pavilion.

Their only loss in that stretch was against the best team in the group, world No. 5 Banija, by a relatively respectable 2-0 margin. They dealt Abanhfleft serious damage to their own World Cup aspirations with an away draw.

Now that the matches are simply playing out the string, now was time to start giving depth players experience. And have fun doing it.

They still remembered Bryan Ostrom. They still remembered the row with Squornshelous. But now, they could devote more of their energy to football.

During the match between the Free Republics and Taeshan, Scarlett Nicholls took time out of her busy schedule to see her brother Veleik. Veleik Nicholls, the former leader of the Legion of Lucifer that brought down Reino Kulseth's Holy Republican Empire, had gone into exile in Celeria under a false name during the O'Reilly years. For several years, he was believed to have been executed by Consul O'Reilly but he returned to the Free Republics toward the end of the Republica Olympics. In the past few years, he had mostly kept a low profile even as his sister and father were synonymous with the government of the Free Republics. In his mansion near Baseton, they were watching the soccer match which began as a defensive struggle.

Scarlett Nicholls - Veleik, have you thought about running for consul?

Veleik Nicholls - Scarlett, you know I'm not a politician.

Scarlett Nicholls - Are you still an anarcho-capitalizt? I thought you'd grown out of that.

Veleik Nicholls - I still believe, as I once did, that there is something better. A society where nobody initiates force is possible.

Scarlett Nicholls - I guess its not possible to run you for consul then...

Veleik Nicholls - I'm willing to run but only if I can run on a platform of abolishing government and replacing it with the free market.

Scarlett Nicholls - That would be extremely ill-advised in this political climate. People want, no they crave, a stronger government that does more things for them. People no longer want to be free if it means they have to be self-reliant.

Veleik Nicholls - Then they need to be forced to be free.

Scarlett Nicholls - That's exactly what I was worried about. I love you Veleik but what we need right now is for somebody to defend our institutions and the prerogatives of business against those demagogues from Golden Age and Common Good.

Veleik Nicholls - I agree that Nova Hellcat or whatever her name is should not be anywhere near power. I remember the nonsense she used to write in Sporting World.

Scarlett Nicholls - So you also suspect that she has secret authoritarian tendencies?

Veleik Nicholls - Of course. There's something about that woman that worries me. I worry she may be an Izmailov, a Kulseth or an O'Reilly masquerading as a pseudo-progressive.

Scarlett Nicholls - What about Common Good?

Veleik Nicholls - There's nothing "Good" about them. They're just the Salvation Circle and the Holy Party re-branded under a thin facade of secularism.

Scarlett Nicholls - So why not do something to stop them, then?

Veleik Nicholls - Scarlett, I'm not running for consul. Do you really think all of those losers who want to use the power of the state to steal our property are going to vote for another Nicholls?

Scarlett Nicholls - Of course not but they're not the majority!

Veleik Nicholls - Look, Scarlett: Your approval ratings are extremely low. Somewhere around 75% of the public disapproves of your job performance. The country's mood is changing and the majority now wishes they'd elected Sebastian Trudeau instead. There are lots of entitled people right now who want things that aren't there's. They believe that the Nicholls family is "too wealthy" and "too successful" and there's no chance in hell that I could get them to elect me as the next consul.

Scarlett Nicholls - What should we do then?

Veleik Nicholls - Have you talked to Abelino? He almost beat that damned soccer player.

Scarlett Nicholls - And why should I encourage him to run? He's part of the Radical Alliance!

Veleik Nicholls - Scarlett, you don't understand: The Liberty Party can't win. Its nomination in this upcoming election is a poisoned chalice that will kill the career of the unfortunate soul who obtains it. The only hope of keeping the enemies of the Constitution out of power is for the Radicals or Moderate Liberal Conservatives to run a strong candidate.

Scarlett Nicholls - And there is no such thing as a "strong candidate" in the Moderate Liberal Conservative party. I can't believe they used to be 3 parties that ruled the Federation together for nearly a century.

Veleik Nicholls - I know. The MLCs are a dysfunctional mess.

Scarlett Nicholls - It feels like its an endless fight to keep the military or that damned death cult from the north pole from seizing control of our government.

Veleik Nicholls - That's why we shouldn't have a government.

Scarlett Nicholls - And what do we do if there's no government to protect our property?

Veleik Nicholls - We establish the Nicholls Protection Agency and build our own private army to maintain law and order for those who can afford to pay us.

Scarlett Nicholls - What about the people who are too poor to afford protection?

Veleik Nicholls - They can give their property to somebody strong enough to protect them and in exchange be permitted to continue living on it and working for the benefit of their protector.

Scarlett Nicholls - That doesn't sound right to me.

Veleik Nicholls - Scarlett, private property is the basis of all rights. That's why it needs to be absolute.

Scarlett Nicholls - I don't think we'll ever agree on this but we both agree that Nova Hellstrom and the Common Kooks threaten our property.

Veleik Nicholls - I guess I do agree that we'd be better off with a government that steals less of what is ours.

Scarlett Nicholls - Oh look, Theriault's team finally scored a goal.

Veleik Nicholls - The clock says 64:13. I can't believe it took them that long!

Scarlett Nicholls - For all the hype they put into this match, its been rather boring and they don't really look that good.

Veleik Nicholls - Oh, look at that Johnny Smith corner and that header by Izmailov

Scarlett Nicholls - Is he related to Senator Izmailov?

Veleik Nicholls - I don't know but probably. Theriault and Hellstrom were rah-rah supporters of the Nat Gres back in the day.

Scarlett Nicholls - But weren't they on our side against Kulseth and O'Reilly?

Veleik Nicholls - Only because Kulseth represented a rival faction of authoritarians and because O'Reilly was only about O'Reilly.

Scarlett Nicholls - But he was in cahoots with the so-called "True Church". I discovered that when I was spying for Falatulu as an indentured servant in Sheriff Akram's house.

Veleik Nicholls - That had to be terrible.

Scarlett Nicholls - It was. I was pretending to be IesusisGodistani and both Akram and his cBots required me to follow all of the teachings of that horrible Church.

Veleik Nicholls - I don't know why you'd agree to such a crazy arrangement.

Scarlett Nicholls - Sometimes, you have to make sacrifices in life for the greater good. You know this as well.

Veleik Nicholls - I got tired of making sacrifices after the stupid voters didn't learn anything. Democracy was a mistake and I no longer have any desire to waste any time or energy defending it.

Scarlett Nicholls - That's a shame. We could really use you on the front lines.

Veleik Nicholls - I wish you luck because I don't want to go in exile again but the masses will never learn to choose liberty.

Scarlett Nicholls - That is because the liberty you seek only really benefits a few.

Veleik Nicholls - And there's nothing wrong with that. I care not for the poor, the downtrodden, the masses yearning to steal what belongs to their betters.

As the match came to an end, with the Republicans clinging to that 1-0 lead in a snoozefest, Scarlett Nicholls realized that her brother was not fit for the fight against Golden Age and Common Good. She now realized that he didn't need to be anywhere near the public for he was now a jaded anarcho-capitalizt who had given up completely on the Republican system of government. Upon her return to Republica, she scheduled a meeting with Abelino Greece in Falatulu...

THE ROCKET REPORT

FAN MAIL TIME

by Brianne Henry,

I figured this would be a good time to see what is on the mind of Rocket Report readers. We haven’t given you all a chance to let your voice be heard during qualifying, and since we like to do that once in a while, now is the time. Without more introductory fluff, let’s get down to the nitty gritty.

Code: Select all
Brianne,

You mentioned in your article about Southport and Stacey Keisler that there were five editions of the Keisler Cup.  Although we did try once to open up signups for a sixth edition.  Don’t you think we should try the tournament anyway again and see who signs up for it.  And if there are only two or three nations, then so be it?

Jason, Southport

Jason, you are correct in pointing out that we did try and open up signups for the sixth edition, then the storm clouds soon rolled in, so to speak, and we stopped doing everything for a very long time. It was a dark period for Newmanistanian sports, and I am glad we are out of it now. That being said, I think it would be completely pointless to restore the Keisler Cup if only a few nations signed up for it. The powers that be put out an inquiry towards the main baseball playing nations in an area where they would respond, and the response was that there was not much interest in it. That was seen in the competitions that we did try, too, and why it was cancelled as a tournament. The sixth tournament was unceremoniously cancelled, but it was not restored due to the lack of interest.
Code: Select all
Brianne,

I was playing this game that a friend in Trolleborg got me called WCQ 84.  I created myself, and was hoping that I could have myself play eternally like Laborious Hawk and others from Valanora, but that was not an option for a Newmanistanian.  Very realistic! Anyway, their Baptism of Fire add-on had me wondering if you think the Eternal Flame tournament should be restored?

Kyle, East Penthoria

Oh, the Eternal Flame tournament. Something that very few people will remember because it really was more of a serious of friendlies then an official tournament. For those who don’t know, the tournament was created as a joint venture by Dancougar (Baptism of Fire 26 winner), us as the Baptism of Fire 27, and Arroza (Baptism of Fire 28 winner). Several editions of the tournament were held between the six or so most recent winners of the Baptism of Fire. If the winner would CTE, then the runner up held the spot, which was the case with Secristan, the runner up in Baptism of Fire 30 (which also produced one of our current co-hosts). I don’t know if that will happen again, and it was really a perfect storm as we had become great rivals with Dancougar in so many different ways and tournaments, and Arroza followed suit. Do the current Baptism of Fire winners have that history with one another. Trolleborg vs Hapilopper vs Xanneria vs Beepee? (Sorry Baker Park). Hapilopper and Xanneria have the potential to have a good rivalry, but other then that Beepee is pretty quiet and I don’t know about Trolleborg. I think the Eternal Flame tournament was one of those great things of the past, and it would be cool to see again as an observer.

One thing I do not see anymore, or very little, are the rivalry “Challenge Cups”. The Bird On Skates Trophy with Dancougar was a Classic. Dancougar will forever be our greatest rival, if we could see one nation come back from the dead, that is the one. We have built other good rivalries, but Dancougar was special. (OOC: An additional component of why our rivalry with Dancougar was extra fun is that we root for teams from cities that are major rivals with one another in all forms of sports, so subtle digs on a real life score were often included).
Code: Select all
Brianne,

Who is the most underrated Newmanistanian soccer player of all time?

Jenn, Dover City

Jenn, this is naturally a tough question when you consider that we have a weird soccer history. It goes back a long way with players who played well at this level. Though, we failed to qualify for the World Cup more often then not. On the flip side, we won the Cup of Harmony three times, and otherwise had a pretty decent history in sport in general. There are a few players, but I think defenders, by nature, are the unsung heroes of any team especially when you are talking about a team that does not play a highly defensive nature. Jason Brooker was a rock in our back end for our early years, and ended up getting an international contract with a highly touted squad from Cafundeu.

Code: Select all
Brianne,

Since we are not playing such a team in our next game, it’s safe to mention this now.  How does the 93rd ranked team qualify or strongly threaten to qualify? Go 10-0-0 against teams ranked below them in the group!  Can you imagine if we did that in the old days?

Richie, Pocono City

It’s an incredible mark for our team since in our earlier days we were very notorious for dropping points against bad teams. This Rockets team resembles more what we do in other tournaments, taking care of business against the ones we are supposed to beat. But yes, that is how it can be done from pot 5, but like you mention there is still plenty of time for that to go south, because it will only take that one game. Against Acronius, we are playing a team that beat us in the first half, but happy that this game is in Loudon. Now, how do you do it while being ranked in the 200's? Ask Ziwana!

Code: Select all
Brianne,

I am stupid.  I am playing in a fantasy World Cup game and I didn’t pick Newmanistan or even Audioslavia or Sargossa from Group 1.  Please make me feel better.

Anonymous

I’m afraid I can’t. Sorry! Fantasy sports are like that though. At least say you didn’t pick Aimena or something.

Code: Select all
Brianne,

Are you glad you don’t have to type out names from Terre Septentrionale players?

Justin, Pocono City

Justin, just typing out the name of that nation is hard enough for me. However, if they play in the next World Baseball Classic then I might have to. Though, we’ll beat them like we always do, no matter what the nation is called.

And we’ll finish it off with,

Code: Select all
Brianne,

Should the national team of Turori always play the Cocoabo squad? One of my favorite parts of watching NSSCRA is watching the two Cocoabo drive, and they have done very well.  I have heard one of them is very good in open wheel racing, too.  If you have such highly talented birds in your nation, then let them play.  The Citizen group is “same ‘ol same ‘ol”.

Nikki, Daytopia

Well Nikki, is not really my place to tell Turori what to do with their team but I am very impressed by how the Cocoabo responded to their initial defeat against 95X. The CEEP (Cocoabo Enrichment and Enhancement Project) has to be very pleased with how the Cocoabo took the loss to heart, and that they were not just a bunch of mindless birds. It showed they have feelings and the competitive desire to succeed in this level and were going to do whatever it took to bounce back. There was some criticism that they faced after the loss, too, which some not believing they should be playing anymore, but they rose up and proved their resiliency. I would love to see the Cocoabo play for the entire tournament, and while I know the Citizen squad would not like that, I’d be curious to see the Cocoabo from start to finish to see how they respond.

That’ll do it for this article! Hope you enjoyed Newmanistan’s 3-1 win in Joyea, we’ll see you next time. Check the website for more detailed coverage of the game.

Football Part 16: vs. Lons

Jillian Nier, Football Correspondent

With another narrow victory, Chromatika remains in second place, eight points ahead of Busoga Islands and six points clear of an idle Main Nation Ministry. It marks the seventh time this cycle that the Chromatiks have won by one goal, which is a majority of their victories. If it wasn't for the clutch moments being produced, the team would be far worse off.

A visit to the Plane of Possibility awaits - the team has received the relevant scroll and instructions already. It'll be a new experience for me as well - being magicked into another realm akin to the famed Dreamed Realm. The Kim twins will be starting alongside Finn Nichols, as Ferret Tioux is still hurt. Laure Etienne plays the leader in this squad of youngsters.

If there is one thing that has become clear through it all, it's that Everdeen and Evans definitely have influence and control over their players. Otherwise, they would've folded by now...

It'll be good for the squad moving forward, as well.
Part 15: The Three

Part 16: The Explanation

After the narrow victory over Lons, Keira Andisori exited the locker room after the postmatch meeting to answer a phone call.

"Keira here," she said, brushing her hair out of her face.

"Andisori. It's Joan," came the voice of one Joan Myrtle, The Enlightened who had been helping the Chromatik government.

"How was your trip to Eyrods?" she inquired, going into a small room for some privacy.

"I am well. Are you alone?" stated the calm voice of Joan Myrtle.

"Yes. You can speak plainly," Keira answered.

"I have met with him. Things are as we expected - it may not be he that is really behind everything. Instead, he claims that my leadership - The Three - are the reason behind both sides of the Rainbow Revolution. Also, he needs our protection," Myrtle stated.

"Protection? From whom?" Keira responded.

"It is not likely that The Three haven't put two and two together and made the conclusion that I do not plan on actually putting The Black Mark down," Joan explained, "And thus, their retaliation may be swift and unexpected. We think they may put into practice what they had originally intended."

"And what is that?" Keira inquired, furrowing.

"That... Is probably told in person. Please send personnel to Eyrods to pick us up, and also have the Premier be involved," stated Joan.

"Understood," was the reply. It made sense that Joan would talk to her and not Alina, as Keira was the one that she'd appeared to initially and also had the most secure phone.

So, Keira continued on...

''Widespread corruption in construction contract for new stadium'' says leading official

An official from the Ethanian Board of Football (EBF) has said to the press that there is 'widespread corruption' in the current stadium construction in Deloitte. They told us exclusively yesterday evening that there are a number of issues of corruption within the contractor and in offering them the contract that has led them to come out to the media.

According to the whistleblower, there are a number of areas of corruption, which they briefly detailed for us and which is copied verbatim:

''The organisation (WellBrick) which the construction of the new stadium has been contracted to is corrupt to its core. It is infested with special interest groups seeking to privatise and monetise the Ethanese footballing game further, bringing more and more sponsorships into the game and filling our shows up with advertisement. Their influence in this organisation obviously bears on the EBF and EFA because of the future use of this stadium as a national stadium for the national team, thus meaning what they want often holds weight in future plans for the organisation and football in Ethane. But the organisation also employs a number of people which hold sway in Ethani football more generally as well, providing people with EBF and EFA jobs money and greater employment opportunities, as well as people who hold influence in those circles.

The organisation is also corrupt in that it cuts a number of corners. Workplace safety laws are often ignored, and even though it is hidden away, child safety laws are also broken. This not being helped by the increasing deregulation and laxity in regulatory checks from our current government. Inferior foreign materials and labour is also being used to construct this stadium, taking jobs away from Ethanians and taking money away from the Ethanese economy.

WellBrick is also a subsidiary of the RedGear group, which owns a number of large firms around Ethane. However, in this case they own the Deloitte Football Club. This is important because as well as being a future national stadium, this will be the official stadium for Deloitte. Thus, the organisation and the EFA are effectively using money for the development of football in Ethane including investment and some taxpayers money to pay for the construction of a new stadium for a private entity so they can grow their profits. If anything is corrupt, that is.

But finally, WellBrick and the RedGear group also engaged in bribery to receive the contract for the construction of the stadium in Deloitte. They pumped millions into bribing officials and employees of the EFA and EBF into supporting their attempts to win the contract, thus unfairly abusing their position and shutting other competitors out of the running for the contract through their abuse and corruption.''

If all that has been said by this anonymous source is true, then there is a lot to be concerned about regarding endemic corruption in football within Ethane, especially in the EFA and EBF and how they award contracts, and where government money is going to. Thus, The ViewFinder officially states that until a full investigation into corruption has undergone and the problems removed from footballing organisations in the country, then the EFA and EBF should receive no more government funding. We call for an immediate suspension of all contracts, and demand a total and in-depth investigation into the state of football in Ethane. These are all necessary to fix what is apparently an epidemic of corruption within football in Ethane.

The stadium was almost silent. Except for the polite chatter of the handful of Acronius fans, the only other noise was the occasional yell from the pitch.
Outside of the Fennec Stadia, however, was a completely different story. A several thousand-strong mob was raising a considerable amount of noise. Policemen with riot shields struggled to advance into the tide of bandanas and flares. A black limousine that had departed fifteen minutes prior was still struggling to escape through the crowd. A loud shriek came from somewhere near the stadium entrance, causing the protesters to disperse slightly. The police officers edged forward a little further. Another flare was set off, and the fighting disappeared in a thick cloud of choking red smoke.

What was supposed to be the grand reopening day of the Fennec Stadia had devolved into absolute chaos, and the fighting was only getting more fierce. At 45 minutes into the rioting, a second, larger, group of protestors approached from the southern exit. Whereas the original group was touting an emblem close to that of the Separatists, the new group was mostly wearing Brusseldorf insignia. As the two groups clashed, policemen struggled to retreat from the crossfire.

Chapter 4.6: Matchday 17

Postby PotatoFarmers » Thu Jan 02, 2020 12:29 am

Anthor 0
Poafmersia 0

Starting 11:
Sandi Jaliaha;
Graciia Warisian, Alex Hoboson, Danzik Hoboson (c), Bolsto Nelison;
Ftiks Wariq (DM);
Bastia Hansilon (LM), Danill Trasa (RM);
Stegaj Johnatson (AM);
Hansel Tang, Likarish Gyits

Substitutes:
Joel Haodao (for Likarish Gyits 62')
Bytia Hisel (for Hansel Tang 72')
Santik Manson (for Stegaj Johnatson 80')

"I don't understand."
Adnan was sitting down in silence following the team's draw against Anthor. Having shook hands with the opposition's team manager, he called on the other coaches to go into the dressing room to wait for him while he sat down on the coaching seat to reflect on the match.
Was it team selection? Yes, he asked Likarish to start with Hansel at the front, and untested combination. When that failed he first brought on Joel Haodao and then Bytia, a combination that worked well in the reverse when they played 4-3-3. A switch to 4-1-2-1-2 was thought to have worked wonders when they beat Euran Oceania Territories the last time out, but tonight it absolutely backfired. Although it brought a clean sheet, the front 2's inability to finish their strikes caused them to be unable to get 3 points when they need it.
With Nephara's win over the Macabees, Poafmersia just literally blew the chance of getting to third place. A superior goal difference would place them ahead at put them in a nice position to possibly catch on any weakness from the front 2, but now Siovanija & Teusland drew and they could not capitalise on it.
The players were by no means happy about the result. Drawing with an already-eliminated team is equivalent to losing to the bottom-placed team. There is no reason for such a result, and some self reflection has to be done. Joel Haodao told reporters after the match that he had "let the team down". "We made so little shots on target throughout the game. All our shots were cheap shots that easily went into the goalkeeper's hands. Yes we got a clean sheet but we should have gotten a 1-0 or even a 2-0. Instead, we show ourselves the door and wasted all opportunities to score," he added. Captain Danzik Hoboson echoed his sentiments, arguing that the team needs to put in more effort in these games. "If we only put in effort against the strongest of opponents, but we give up our chances against weaker ones, then we will get nowhere. This result is a reflection we have to take as we think about our campaign, how we may have fought well at times but miss many chances at others. Such sub-par football cannot be carried to the Cup of Harmony if we get there, or even to the next IFCF and FFI club season when we rejoin our clubs." Bytia, on the other hand, told reporters that a long qualification campaign means everyone plays an important role. "Some players might think that they are second or third choices for a position, so they do not work hard. But with such a long campaign, everyone needs to be prepared for their turn on the pitch, and replicate their good abilities to the fans."
Fans were also upset with the draw. One anonymous fan told reporters outside the stadium at Anthor that he "never saw a poorer performance", while another said that the clubs should focus on producing more depth in terms of skills. "A competitive league is good, but if all the players in every club are not at the top level by international standards, then it would be useless." Another fan, named Fisankia, said that the clubs should consider opening their league to international players. "The clubs had previously agreed to keep the 1st 2 seasons of the reform league only open to local players. While that can help breed more local players, at one point in time we need other players from good foreign nations to come in and showcase their true strength to increase the level of football."

Anthor 0–0 Poafmersia
Euran Oceania Territories 2–2 BOLGANO
Siovanija & Teusland 0–0 Monso
The Macabees 2–3 Nephara
Aquitlia 1–1 Squornshelous

2 Nephara 15 11 2 2 37 16 +21 35
3 The Macabees 16 9 0 7 31 31 0 27

10 Anthor (E) 15 3 3 9 15 24 −9 12
11 Monso (E) 15 2 2 11 12 35 −23 8

10 points behind Nephara, having played a game more, is equivalent to being out of contention. Poafmersia has to win everything and pray that Nephara does not win a single game, which is an absolutely ridiculous idea to entertain. Definitely the team is on the way out with that terrible draw. A ticket to Xanneria and Banija would be the best outcome for their first campaign at qualification, and a good result there would help to convince naysayers that Poafmersia's entry into international football is the right move. But who knows whether we can get good results there? The teams that are eliminated and moving over are not the easiest bunch. With a rumored expansion to 48 teams, it might worsen the outcome for Poafmersia, given the little experience of the team at big tournaments. A Quarter-Finals result would be great, but that would be some task to achieve. Meanwhile, they can only seat back and enjoy the last 4 matches here in qualification.

After the Meeting with Consul Scarlett

The Leader - Goodnight, folks! And already remember, that's l-

We will now return to your regularly scheduled broadcast after these commercials!

"He brought a gun and his own men to a talk show?" Dorbi said, nervously as some agents of his were reviewing the footage of the interview. "It's already circulating as trending on the social media of Free Republics. Studio executives aren't busy taking down the video. There tons of copies of the interview, our best bet is to establish the Leader as unwell." the agent explained, as Dorbi was overlooking the technicians, who were busy getting a lead on Gossip Magazine. "Sir, we shut down WankTube." a technician explained to Truman.
"How long will it be before the site goes back up?"
"I doubt any admin running the website will do so. We managed to lock them out of control of the website. Anyone who attempts to use the website is just going to get the same error. Not even the owners can do anything."
"I doubt the videos weren't be visible."
"All of them were deepfakes. We checked if Gossip Magazine had been used as a source for any alternative news source, but it's mainly negative citation."

"Sir! We managed to get an address!" Sammy called over Truman, as Sammy was checking the flow of any new articles from Gossip Magazine, where Etoile had accidentally published the address of Gossip Magazine's location. "What's the address?"
"Bridge Street in Reco, Jolarus. Hang on. Website is refreshing... The author Etoile Quenneville changed it. Address is now the New Olympic Tower." Sammy explained to Truman. "We can't let the Leader burn down any more skyscrapers. I'm getting Keller. We going to head to the address in Reco."

Keller had finished her talk with Consul Scarlett, though she did warn her that others would want to invade Main Nation Ministry against the Consul's wishes. Though some peace talk was enough to reason with her a bit. Keller was the only one in Truman's group that didn't watch the Leader's interview. Keller simply dismissed it. A rambling of a madman, as the Leader talked. Keller didn't bother to see all of it to the end. Truman arrived to Keller to explain her the next objective. "We found where Gossip Magazine is at. They are currently in Bridge Street in Reco, Jolarus. It's within Free Republics. Away from Republica, but I think the Leader wouldn't be stupid enough to get a wrong address." Truman explained to her.

"What about the Leader? He's going to kill anyone who gets in his way deliberately."
"Doubt it. The Leader probably knows to avoid committing arson. He would want to kill both Jasper Chuter and Etoile Quenneville up close and personal."
"I'm forced to babysit some bodyguards with me?"
"If things go out of control, yes." Truman said, where Keller had her combat knife at her side, which Truman saw.

"If someone tries to pull something, I can defend myself." Keller said to Truman, as both Keller, Truman and some bodyguards departed to Reco.

Sammy checked to make sure that the group was gone, where he privately emailed someone from the laptop he was working on.
Address is Bridge Street in Reco, Jolarus. Hopes it helps you, dear Leader!

The Leader examined Sammy's message from his tablet, as he was suiting up in his trench coat disguise. The Leader had made sure to have Sammy appear among the bunch of technicians that Truman took with him from Main Nation Ministry to take down Gossip Magazine's digital works. As a double agent, he revealed some interesting information. Gossip Magazine had accidentally revealed their address and tried to put up a different one of the New Olympic Tower. The Leader wasn't in the mood of burning down any more buildings, but he wanted to remove the stain of journalism plaguing Free Republics of Jasper Chuter once and for all.

"C'mon boys!" the Leader told his men, as they left the hotel room to take a cab for other transportation to Jolarus. For the Leader, he was going to be a bit late, but he knew what target he had already planned. And he was available to get rid of Etoile Quenneville in the process.

Princess Katherine Annabelle Dallas dressed as Princess Anna from Frozen

Hello this is Princess Anna, Queen of Arendelle for Naked News Jeruselem. Actually I'm Princess Katherine ANNABelle Dallas of Jeruselem, Princess of Jeruselem. Hey but you should know that. I'm not Queen of anything yet. It's match day 17 in qualification of the World Cup 84, and it's getting to pointy end of the competition here. Teams will be eliminated. Anyway, we're in Balqia who are proving a bit a handful causing trouble with some wins.

In group 11, the struggle is real with the top 2 holding of a determined group of contenders. Today the group leader Free Republics had a bye, which was an opportunity for the 2nd placed Taeshan to get back after losing to them 1-0. I don't think Free Republics need to worry about much.

Taeshan hosted near bottom placed Nahkistan, and struggled to a 2-1 win. Well they always seem to win that way, they do enough. But that's their style. No drama but just consistency apart from a few blips. This means they claw back 3 points on leader Free Republics. Compared to Free Republics, they have struggled to keep up with them.

Savojarna visited Welzat, and took home a 4-3 win. Close but they needed the win. They also need others to fail but that's not their control.
Schottia had a danger game visiting TJUN-ia, but won 4-2 which wasn't what we wanted. Nevermind that. It pretty much means they don't move on the table for this round.
Galar was at home and beat a fading Geektopia 2-0. Geektopia started so well but others have taken over pushed them down the table.

That leaves this game here in Balqia, where well a loss for any team would cause problems with so few games left to catch up the leaders. Jeruselem has been on winning run and once again scored an away win. 3-2 to the visitors dealing a devastating loss the home team.

Something's changed about Jeruselem, yes we still leak goals but we've had some clean sheets in some games which indicated we have actually learnt something from past results. Our dismal scoring in the 1st half is different, scoring more than 2 goals per game for most the 2nd half so far. That's the difference, it's turning draws intos wins! Which I wish had done in the 1at half since we have flipping 6 draws.

The table is getting more settled. Galar despite their win is still ... last on 11 points. Welzat are still ... 2nd last with 11 points but a better goal difference but it's still an awful one. Nahkistan are 9th, with 12 points so the battle for last is not settled at all.

Geektopia still hold 8th on 16 points, they've just been losing games and not getting anywhere. It's been a while since they have gotten any points. TJUN-ia are trying, but on 18 points it's getting impossible from 7th position. Savojarna are just above them in 6th on 19 points. They've improved but I think it's too late for them now. Balqia are in 5th place in 21 points, respect but getting hard to dislodge the top teams. Jeruselem doing their best to get to 3rd but still stuck in 4th with 27 points because Schottia have 28 points. We win, they win. So we're stuck in behind them. Taeshan 2nd with 35 points, they have a 7 point buffer over Schottia. It sounds like a lot but Schottia and Jeruselem on paper can catch them! Free Republics on 42 points, they'll be in the top 2.

A great day for us but our main rivals won so we don't get anywhere. So the situation hasn't changed with the same top 4 in the same spots. We cannot afford to slow down because there's a lot of work left to do, we need claw max points from all our games especially the ones against Taeshan and Free Republics.

Positive changes for 2nd half of this cup so far. Yes our defense should be better but we're scoring goals! Lots of them! We hope we can keep this up for the rest of qualification and give ourselves a chance to quality.

I do get asked about a scar on my left leg which isn't exactly hidden. Yeah, that was caused during a fencing accident during a competition where I got kinda stabbed there. The opponent's blade snapped and the rest of blade drive into my leg. I'm fine! That happens, good thing it hasn't in my face heh.

We have a home game next and yes I'll be dressed as someone else!

Group 11
Taeshan 2–1 Nahkistan
Welzat 3–4 Savojarna
Balqia 2–3 Jeruselem
TJUN-ia 2–4 Schottia
Galar 2–0 Geektopia

Eura @ Andromeda Eagles
Joe Napoli Stadium
Joppa, Allied States
Saturday Afternoon

The Eagles entered today’s game with back-to-back wins. Their opponents decimated them earlier by a 5-0 margin. This time, the Eagles have momentum combined with a sold-out home crowd.

The first half proved to be a defensive stand-off. Eura had a negligible possession advantage and as many shots on goal as the Eagles, but neither side was able to score.

It was the 57th minute before Abby Salliewhite was given her second Yellow card of the match. Within a minute of Salliewhite leaving the pitch, Brian Bond scored Eura’s first goal.

Despite being down a man, the Eagles were able to tie on a goal by Dolfo Martinez in the 66th minute.

More than 20 minutes later, Dave Richman and Rhys Griffiths get involved in a shoving match. Officials gave Richman a Red Card, taking the Eagles down to 9 players. Brian Bond capitalized, scoring the deciding goal just as the second half went into injury time. The Eagles were unable to recover.

Coach Zimmerman is with the team in the locker room. They are silent as Zimmerman begins what she promises to be a brief talk.

“It seemed easier when we lost 5-0 on the road to them, doesn’t it?”

Much of the team is silent.

“We were supposed to be humiliated by Eura both times. This loss hurts more than the other one. When you do everything you think you’re supposed to win and you fall just short, it’s not a pleasant feeling.”

“One of you came up to me after our last game and thanked me for giving you something to chase instead of something to run from. All I did was give a speech. I didn’t put myself out on the line this afternoon. You did.”

“Eura has their World Cup. We have a Baptism of Fire from 30 years ago. None of us were born yet. They have a soccer tradition. We don’t. But that’s not important.”

“What’s important is did you give it your all out there?”

“We did, Coach.” Rick Sprinkle speaks for the team.”

“Is there anything more we could have done tonight?”

“I don’t think so, Coach.”

“We came within a goal of the #10 Team in the World. I’m proud of what we’ve done today.”

The team is still quiet.

“Good luck with Finals.”

The players have their final exams next week. Most of the Eagles will be finished with Exams before jetting off to Recuecn Wednesday evening.

The Eagles’ remaining home games will be in Portsmouth, the largest city in the Allied States.

Petrograd, Plymouth, Free Republics

On their bye day, the Republican National Soccer Team returned to their home base of Plymouth for the grand opening of their new headquarters. Years of discussions with Mayor Douglas Keith and the city of Petrograd had finally paid off and now the Republican National Team's sprawling campus was ready to open. The contrast between the state of the art training facilities, the luxurious offices and the spartan dormitory was especially sharp. As the team utilized the facilities for fitness training, Koby Theodore had a number of questions for his boss about the design of the new headquarters, which took up most of a small back road with no outlet called Margaret Lane.

Koby Theodore - Coach, is there any reason why the dormitories look so much cheaper than everything else?

Rule Theriault - Koby, we want to toughen our players up. That's why we didn't bother putting heat or air conditioning in the dormitory. Its also why we bought those cheap bunk beds.

Koby Theodore - But won't this run-down dormitory hurt our preparation for matches?

Rule Theriault - Nobody's going to be sleeping in there before a match. We're going to hold our training camps here.

Koby Theodore - I noticed there were hundreds of beds in the dormitory. Why so many?

Rule Theriault - We're going to be launching our own league soon and we're going to be building it around younger players for the most part, all trained within our system.

Koby Theodore - But will it help them if they only play against teams running our system?

Rule Theriault - They're going to be playing against opponents from all over the Federation and the multiverse. There's a new competition starting up soon that is going to be replacing UICA. Besides that, there's also a lucrative tour of Saintland.

Koby Theodore - Touring Saintland can help but that may be limiting.

Rule Theriault - We will be traveling all over. The best players will then be picked for our international squads.

Koby Theodore - Is there an advantage to doing this as opposed to just having our players go abroad for domestic play?

Rule Theriault - The National Team must be the #1 priority for players. When your generation started going abroad to every random country, your eye fell off the ball and you stopped producing results. The last thing we need is for a star player to under-perform in a critical match because he is tired from playing a match in the Talking Horse Hoofball League.

Theodore laughed, thinking back to his days at Manechester City when the ultra-talented Equestrian club consistently finished mid-table with an extremely talented squad due to an extremely bad defense and poor team chemistry. He remembered it as a fun time even though the team never accomplished anything.

Koby Theodore - I got to play on an all star team with some of the biggest stars from around the multiverse.

Rule Theriault - And your "all star team" finished mid-table year after year while your performances in international competition slipped.

Koby Theodore - But I made lots of money and you made lots of money from the transfer fee.

Rule Theriault - We can make more money by keeping all of our stars in-house.

Koby Theodore - What about bringing back some of the old stars as coaches?

Rule Theriault - That's already been in the works. Kyle and Nova have been talking to Connie Chase about coming back to soccer as a coach.

Koby Theodore - I still can't believe she was left off the team when we brought it back. She was only 23 then and is just 29 now.

Rule Theriault - After we disbanded the team, she went into pro wrestling and became a legend there.

Koby Theodore - Yeah, she had that 6 and a quarter star match with the Taiyouese girl at the Olympics a few years back.

Rule Theriault - And most wrestling experts say she carried her opponent. Its going to be hard to get her to take time away from New Taiyou Women's Pro Wrestling to coach soccer.

Koby Theodore - But we'll find a way to get her and the rest of the old timers on board.

Rule Theriault - More urgently, we have a match coming up in Nahkistan. If we take care of business there, we punch our ticket back to the World Cup.

Koby Theodore - That's great. The sooner we can wrap that up, the better.

Rule Theriault - Even if we do clinch qualification with 4 matches in hand, we can't take those remaining matches for granted. Our plans for the remaining 5 matches of qualifying will stay the same regardless of results.

Koby Theodore - Will we be playing the full strength lineup again?

Rule Theriault - Not until the World Cup. Even then, I think some of our reserves have earned playing time in the World Cup proper.

Koby Theodore - I'll let the reserves know that strong performance in the remaining matches may lead to playing time in the World Cup proper.

Rule Theriault - Very well. See to it that we keep everybody motivated...

HUElavia gets a vital draw to maintain position!

Los Amarillos keep on making history, as they traveled to Jhanna, to play in the Stadii di Brandini, against group leaders Starblaydia. Both teams played with their best XI, as the group lead was in play, with the winner having nearly a foot into the World Cup 84 Group Stages.

The first half was very quiet from both sides, as neither would take many shots. All the shots we're mainly long distance shots that just went wide or were stopped by Leopoldi and Ricardo. The first half ended 0-0, with the crowd seemingly annoyed by the performance.

The second half was an entire 180* turn, as both teams gave a spectacular display. HUElavia would strike twice, as two crosses by Rocheteau would meet the heads of Petit and Mendieta in the 53rd and 57th minute to give a surprising 0-2 lead for Los Amarillos. Starblaydia would respond with two corners in the 65th and 68th minute with crosses by Yamaguchi to meet the heads of Apelles and Velasquez to tie it at 2-2. Both teams tried to score again, but to no avail and the crowd left with a satisfied 2-2 draw, leaving both teams still with a small gap over 3rd place.

With the draw, Starblaydia and HUElavia stay in 1st and 2nd with 36 and 35 points respectively, while Mercedini close in with 32 points after their 2-0 home win against The Sarian. HUElavia will play against already eliminated The Ross Isles in Estadio Banco de HUElavia (64,500) in Fuenteque for Matchday 18 (17 for HUElavia), where it is expected to see a mix of some starters with some back-up players for the next 3 matches. Everyone is hopeful that this team can make their first ever NS World Cup, which all they want is for Los Amarillos to finish off strong for these remaining 4 matches.

FORCA HUELAVIA! VAMOS HUELAVIA! GO HUELAVIA!
