The University of Handon, Harbour Campus, 2005…
Claire Hanson finished her cigarette, extinguishing the evidence under the sole of her shoe, before heading back inside. She’d picked the habit up while backpacking in Río Oscuro over the summer, and the stress of her final year exams meant it was proving hard to drop.
Her place at the University of Handon was a big deal, not just for Claire, but her parents too. Being the first member of your family to attend university brought a pressure in itself, but when you added the scholarship into the mix, then cost of failure was great. She had been on her way back from the gym one morning, when Barry Gorman’s secretary had called her out of the blue, offering to put her through the degree. There was a substantial grant involved, should she agree to join Port Sebastian upon her graduation. Up until that point it had been the career prospects that had been putting her off taking her studies further, but with this offer, it was too good to turn down.
‘Sorry…’ She whispered, creeping quietly into the lecture theatre, hoping to take a seat at the back without her tutor noticing. She was only a couple of minutes late, but this particular lecture always started promptly. She found a seat in the back row, and pulled her laptop from her bag, ready to start. It wasn’t until the light from the screen hit her, that Claire realised she was still feeling the effects of last night. This was the problem with agreeing to one beer before heading home. It was never just one, and it inevitably ended with a trip to the Quayside, doing shots at the end of some bar.
‘Pssst. Claire…’ She rubbed her bloodshot eyes, and turned in the direction of the voice, still blinded by the light from her laptop. ‘How are you feeling?’ Asked Mary, one of her classmates, and the last person Claire remembered seeing before cycling back home.
‘Like I’ve barely survived Z-Day.’ She put her arm out in front of her like one of the walking dead. ‘How about you..?’
‘Can the voices at the back please save it until the end of the lecture..?’
Both young women ducked, to avoid the Lecturer’s glare. ‘I wanted to ask if you were going to the game tonight?’ Mary kept her voice as low as possible, but it still drew a few dirty looks from one or two of their more straight-laced classmates.
‘Granton Vale, at home to New Island.’ Mary continued, unperturbed. ‘We can have a few beers the Flailing Seal, or maybe one of the other pubs down on the coastal road.’
Claire puffed out her cheeks, to make a show if thinking it over. She was feeling rough, but the prospect drinks on the “wrong side of the tracks” so to speak, brought a tingle of excitement. Mary was a staunch Granton fan, and she had been trying for most of the year to get Claire to come along to one of the games.
‘It’ll give you a chance to run the rule on Corsie.’ Mary added, hoping to sweeten the deal. ‘That midfielder we’ve got on loan from Porty.’ It was sign that Claire had been busy, and hadn’t been following football that closely for the past six months or so. Corsie, the Fishmonger’s son; that was a blast from the past.
‘How’s he been playing?’ Claire asked at last, suddenly curious.
‘Good.’ Mary replied, a little too loudly. ‘Very good.’ She corrected her levels. ‘He’s been one of our best players – cracking shot on him – might fire us into the SPL. Tonight’s going to be a big one though, bit of a six pointer.’
‘Okay.’ Claire began to nod, with the additional information having sealed the deal. ‘We’ll take the bikes up there after our last class.’
‘Fish and chips for dinner?’ Mary asked with a smile.
‘Fish and chips for dinner.’ Claire confirmed with a smile, before turning back to her computer and trying to savage her concentration.

Krytenia 0-1 Mattijana
Unknown venue, Krytenia-Illicic (65')
Mattijanan lineup (5-2-3 formation): L.Handanovic, Ljunavic, Burnisovic, Illicic, Sevastova, Krychowiak, Hojbjerg, Jakupovic (Kovac 75'), Bisrali (Velezia 75'), Struna, Lorenzic (Jokic 89')
Rikard Illicic's second-half header earned Mattijana a tight victory in Krytenia that might just kickstart the Marmot's World Cup campaign. The central defender seized on a lapse in the home defensive line to steer in Katarina Jakupovic's free kick in an otherwise cagey affair in Krytenia.
Unlike Mattijana, Krytenia have had a good start to their qualifying campaign, drawing away to top seeds Vilita having already put 3 past Castanya, but despite scoring 5 in their first 2 games, they looked toothless in front of their own fans, especially against a well-drilled Mattijanan defense.
Zala Stefanidi's side, who had claimed only 4 points from their opening 3 games, undoubtedly produced the most solid performance so far this cycle with their strong defence coupled with threat on the counter-attack that prevented the hosts from committing too many players forward until after they conceded the opener.
Jessika Struna and Sofiane Bisrali carried pace and trickery up the flanks, whilst Kara Lorenzic was a willing runner throughout the match and would have had a goal or two were it not for a good save and then a bad miss when the Matbirjke striker was through on goal during the first half.
That meant it took until the second half for Mattijana to make the breakthrough, but when Struna was cynically tripped as she tried to make a burst towards the Krytenian penalty area, the dead ball was positioned nicely for one of Jakupovic's outswinging deliveries.
The Snezn player curled her cross in between the defensive line and goalkeeper, allowing Illicic to make the most of a miscommunication between defender and goalkeeper to stab into the empty net.
Krytenia were forced to commit more people to their attempts to salvage a result, and went close to an equaliser when Handanovic palmed away a deflected effort from the edge of the box before the rebound was well-blocked by Krychowiak. The hosts also had a shout for handball against Ana Sevastova turned down after a shot appeared to strike the defender's arm from close range.
In the end, Mattijana held out for the win though, nearly adding a second when substitute Matej Jokic hit the far-post with a stoppage-time shot from a tight angle.
The victory is Stefanidi's first against higher-ranked opposition and represents a major step forward for the Marmots after a disappointing Campionato Esportiva and a sluggish start to the World Cup qualifying season. They face Catanya in Revinka in their next match, a venue far enough South to be unaffected by the cold spell that has hit central and northern Mattijana recently.

Dozens of illegal workers arrested after 'Goodbye Filindostan' firecracker crackdown
SAN MARCO - 36 people were arrested by Filindostani police around San Marco and Buenavista when they conducted raids around the city after President Dorigo Dutete ordered a crackdown on a dangerous firecracker, named 'Goodbye Filindostan', as the new year looms in three months time. Police Chief Inspector Timothy "Mothi" Locsin said in an interview that several concerned citizens tipped the police about an illegal activity around several subdivisions in the San Marco-Buenavista border. The citizens complained of a putrid smell around their homes which started to affect their health.
The arrested people were of around ages 17 to 54 years old, 3 of which are women, and all of them do have neither the work nor safety permits. The police are now finding the leader of the group, which is now in hiding around Kabunuklan Island.
'Goodbye Filindostan' is an illegal firecracker that the police believe that will cause significant injury to users who mishandle them. Around 50 kilograms of ingredients for the firecracker were confiscated, and were soiled to prevent further usage for illegal purposes.
People gave the name 'Goodbye Filindostan' as the nation is struggling in World Cup 84 qualifying after the team were booed from the pitch as they struggled to a 1-1 draw with Furby Island. They will travel next to Bliuji to face the third placed team of Group 8. The Pula Garuda is in 7th of 11 teams in Qualifying Group 8 and will try to bounce back after a poor start to their campaign that saw them lose to Qasden on Matchday 2.
