World Cup 84

Sargossa - 'The Corsairs'

The Sargossan national side is experiencing something of a purple patch, with final four appearances at three of the previous four Copa Rushmoris and last sixteen exits at the last three World Cups, before running into a trio of Atlantian heavyweights in Vilita, Starblaydia and Equestria. A highest ever position in the world rankings is the result of that, something that Rodrigo Defederico and his staff can be hugely proud of.

Head Coach

Rodrigo Defederico
Former international midfielder who starred in the SuperLiga, before plying his trade in Astograth. A former coach of the Olympic side who led hometown club Dunas Del Sol to the Copa Sargossa final in his first full season in charge. Has led the Corsairs to second, fourth and second place finishes in the Copa Rushmori and four straight World Cup qualification.

Backroom Staff

Assistant Head Coach: Raúl Churín
Defensive Coach: Guillermo Lucena
Attacking Coach: Alejandro Tapia
Goalkeeping Coach: Armando Abad
Fitness Coach: Mario Sánchez
Team Doctor: Dr Carla Segura

Talent

GK: 1. Roberto Penedo (28) – Ciudad Soluca
GK: 13. Carlos Ríos (34) – Sportivo Soluca
GK: 25. Tomás Gaos (29) – Sportivo Cordova

Penedo’s ascension to the number one spot is made official with him finally handed the number one shirt. Ríos remains a highly experienced backup while Tomás Gaos, a consistent pair of hands in the SuperLiga, is given a first taste of international action.

DR: 2. Carlos Carter (24) – Sporting San Marquez
DC: 5. Juan Esnáider (25) – Alianza Jucaro
DC: 6. Alex González (33) – Oakstone (Eura)
DL: 3. Saúl Escribano (28) – Sportivo Soluca
DLC: 12. Josué Ruiz (26) – Ciudad Soluca
DRC: 14. Enrique Muñoz (30) – Sporting San Marquez
DR: 19. Alonzo Zevallos (31) – Ciudad Soluca
DC: 21: Hugo Galán (22) – El Nacional

Seemingly you don’t get a look in as a SuperLiga centreback unless you happen to clear six foot so expect an imposing wall of darker blue arrayed ahead of the keeper. González and Muñoz are the only regular faces remaining from the last World Cup campaign. Although if the coach sticks with the 5-3-2 system that the side employed to good effect in the latter stages of that qualification campaign Saúl Escribano will also get the nod. Ruiz and Galán provide options at centreback, but it’s likely to be the impressive Juan Esnáider who slots into the back three. After an impressive Copa Rushmori campaign Carlos Carter, who has managed to fight off the awful stigma of having a Candelariasian father, is expected to take the right wingback berth ahead of Zevallos.

MC: 4. Sergio Espina (33) – Alianza Jucaro
AMR: 7. Diego Puebla (31) – El Nacional
MC: 8. César Goyoso (28) – Sporting San Marquez
AML: 11. Esteban Leguizamo (23) – El Nacional
AMRC: 15. Daniel Correa (25) – Alianza Jucaro
MC: 16. Adrián Fonseca (26) – Ciudad Soluca
DMC: 18. Luís Vazquez (32) – Ciudad Soluca
DMC: 22. Esteban Pomar (23) – El Nacional
AMLC: 24. Mauro Pereira (24) – Sportivo Cordova

With Alejandro Vecino finally calling time on his playing career heir apparent, and essential part of the side in his own right, César Goyoso wears the number eight shirt. The wide players may find their playing time limited with coach Defederico opting for wingbacks in recent matches, but remain in the squad and provide alternatives in times of trouble. Sergio Espina may be the captain but he’ll still be aware of the talented Adrián Fonseca waiting in the wings. Either the experienced Luís Vazquez or newcomer Esteban Pomar will provide the bite in the centre of the park.

FLC: 9. Miguel Ángel Berganza (31) – El Nacional
FRLC: 10. Diego Alejandro Costa (23) – Sportivo Soluca
FC: 17. Fabián Guzmán (30) – Sporting San Marquez
FRC: 20. Matías Cáceres (33) – Ciudad Soluca
FL: 23. Andrés Saavedra (30) – Estrella Torreón
FC: 26. Tomas Murillo (28) – Ciudad Soluca

Much of The Corsairs’ recent success had stemmed from the fluid offensive play provided by the attacking trident of Iván Mayoral, Miguel Marí and Matías Cáceres. But with Mayoral retiring prior to the previous Copa and Marí calling it a day following the recent World Cup it’s a much-changed attacking unit. Miguel Ángel Berganza and Fabián Guzmán came in to good effect but the switch to a front two may also give the coach the opportunity to test out new options. Tomas Murillo, fresh from a massive money move to Ciudad Soluca, and last season’s domestic breakout star Diego Alejandro Costa will be given the chance to shine.

Style

Defederico credits former Sargossan great Ernesto Farias for his own tactical approach, a 3-4-3 system with a high defensive line and an emphasis on pressing and harrying the opposition into a mistake. He is also far more attack minded than his predecessor and his players are encouraged to get the ball from front to back at a rapid pace. Long balls are considered anathema, with even the goalkeeper encouraged to slide a pass to the defender rather than hoofing it up field. The system is relatively fluid, with 5-3-2, 3-4-1-2 and 5-4-1 all used to some degree, depending on the circumstances and opposition.

Although following a home qualification defeat to Drawkland in the previous campaign Defederico tweaked his favoured style, dropping his wide midfielders for deeper wingbacks. But still putting a focus on the offensive side of things. Five clean sheets in the final seven games of that campaign followed and consequently the formation change has stuck.

The SuperLiga is quite a physical league so challenges can often be described as 'uncompromising' and cards are pretty common. Gamesmanship, while never encouraged, is also not entirely uncommon. But diving is considered particularly stigmatic so Sargossan players are unlikely to be found doing it.

Venues

Estadio Generalissimo Joaquín Delgado
City: Soluca
Capacity: 108,879
Tenants: Ciudad Soluca, Sportivo Soluca
Opponent(s): Audioslavia, Acronius, Newmanistan

The centrepiece of a major beautification development in the capital, the stadium sits within the Parque De Los Vencedores and alongside the Corazal River. Designed by Nethertopian architect Gert Naamloos and part financed by two SuperLiga clubs, the Sargossan government and Starblaydi sportswear giants ediraf it is a truly magnificent sporting arena. The Estadio Generalissimo Joaquín Delgado, as the ediraf Arena was rechristened when the naming rights deal expired, is the epitome of a modern football stadium. Consequently, it is the national side’s most commonly used venue. Unfortunately, the glamourous surroundings are marred somewhat by the Soluca crowds’ reputation for being both fickle and moody.

Image
Image

Independienté
City: Goza
Capacity: 119,354
Tenants: El Nacional
Opponent(s): Kandorith, Islas Aaland

The very antithesis to the modern Estadio Generalissimo Joaquín Delgado, and revelling in that fact. The internal facilities may have been kept relatively up to date at the Independienté but little has changed at the vast open bowl since its construction. The nation’s largest sporting venue and one that prides itself on the genuine carnival atmosphere produced on matchdays.

Ciudad Deportiva
City: Maturín
Capacity: 52,000
Tenants: Dínamo Maturín
Opponent(s): Brusseldorf

Although the name has come to refer to the stadium alone the Ciudad Deportiva is actually a whole site devoted to sporting excellence. Constructed as part of a government drive to boast sport, the site is also home to the national Track and Field Centre of Excellence, an aquatic centre, basketball and volleyball facilities and a state-of-the-art sport science clinic. The stadium itself is an impressive venue that is regularly voted as the top matchday experience by fans in the SuperLiga. The Sargossan record there too is very strong, having dropped points only three times in the eighteen matches played in Maturín over the years.

Estadio Silva
City: San Marquez
Capacity: 62,543
Tenants: Sporting San Marquez
Opponent(s): Pius Desurongcrandis

Like the Independienté the Estadio Silva is one of the older venues used by the national side. Set within one of the poorer districts of the eclectic southern city of San Marquez, in amongst the brightly coloured favelas and street vendors, a trip to the stadium is more a cultural experience than a sporting one for the foreign visitor. Some famous nations have taken to the Estadio Silva turf in the past, names such as Sorthern Northland, Candelaria And Marquez and Cassadaigua.

Bonilla Arena
City: Jucaro
Capacity: 74,475
Tenants: Alianza Jucaro
Opponent(s): Joyea, Greater Cebu

The quintessential rich man’s play thing, Alianza Jucaro are the nearly men of Sargossan domestic football. Bankrolled by the mega-wealthy Bonilla family the club have won three national cup competitions in recent years but have never claimed the league title they so crave. While the Bonillas have thrown money at the playing staff they’ve also invested heavily in infrastructure, including the stadium that bears their name. Set in the South Quays district of the port city, right on the waters of the Bay of Carrasco, it’s an imposing venue for visiting sides.

Petro Dome
City: Mercada
Capacity: 42,511
Tenants: Petro Mercada
Opponent(s): Aimena

In a city so synonymous with Petro National, the Sargossan national oil and gas company, it’s no surprise to find both the local football team and the stadium in which they play blazoned with the Petro name. Oil wealth has yet to equal success on the pitch for the Incan side but that wealth may have played some part in the city replacing island rivals Torreón in the World Cup rotation.

Coaching Staff

Manager: Sharip Timayev

Sharip Timayev, a former footballer in the lower tier of Nahkistani football, has been appointed manager of the national team for the Wonder Cup and World Cup Qualifiers. The national league is heavily defensive, as most players do not have the technical quality to play any other way. There is a lot of fouling and pragmatic football. Hoofing it up the field to a target man striker is a common tactic. What Nahkistani players do have in spades, however, is heart and passion: they will often out-work even higher-skilled opponents. Nahkistan will line up in a 4-4-2 formation for the duration of the tournament.

Yttribia
Football Factbook

Nickname: The Ravens
Style Modifier: -4
World Cup Appearances: 71 (host), 72
Best Finish: Group Stage

An Introduction
Let's be real: This team is utter garbage. No point in saving them but seeing as they are all being commanded by this mysterious figure known as "The Showrunner" (this is actually me, in some attempt to be a dollar store Kurt Vonnegut figure in my writings) to participate in this edition of the tournament. Most of their footballing knowledge has withered away, and so has their talent pool. There's nothing left for them to do but attempt to pick up the pieces and do something with it anyways.

Many of our good players scrammed the minute they first saw trouble, too. (OOC: If you had an Yttribian player in one of your domestic leagues, chances are flocks of good players flocked too trying to make it big. Feel free to generate players with Yttribian heritage) The talent drain when it comes to good, competent players really hit the country hard, and now we're here with less-than-talented but still somewhat talented players.

Home Stadium
Image
The Infantry's Ground, cap. 5,655, Olivera, Fontvieille Capital District

In another timeline where Yttribia was not desolate and in near ruins, Le Nid Violet would have been the premier destination and the home nest (get it, because the team nickname is the Ravens hahaha…) for the national squad. But it's an utter mess, like most other stadia in the county, so the National Team now has to find a new home ground while the country collectively picks itself up in an attempt to return to normality.

Back in the days of yore, the Infantry's Ground was mocked for its design gimmick. One man even asked, "What kind of a buffoon is going to put a soccer ground above an apartment complex?"

Well, whichever buffoon thought of that turned out to be smart, because it is the only venue that is up to par with traditionally okay pitches and can host matches. Be quiet while you play, as some of the people downstairs are trying to get some sleep.

It's got seats, it's got nice grass and it's got a cool venue. What more could you want from it? Yeah, sure, it's not as cool as the other actual venues that exist, but hey? You won't get what you want, sometimes.

Roster, bold are starters
OOC: All players are currently free agents. Please TG me if you want to pick them up for whatever fifth division side you have.

Goalkeepers

Yttribian National Football Team Depth Chart - WC84 Qualis

No. 1 | Virgie Rigó (they/them/theirs) | GK | 26 yrs | 1.83m
No. 12 | Bradley Brock (he/him/his) | GK | 18 yrs | 1.70m
No. 23 | Marje Aloia (she/her/hers) | GK | 31 yrs | 1.89m

Yes, it is true that all of these goalkeepers—and players, for that matter—were born after The Relocation was announced. Which means they have absolutely no experience playing professional football. But can they kick it? Yes they can… at least somewhat. And Aloia is proven to be the best of the bunch so far of the generation of players that have not played pro football. It helps that she spends all her time trying to block rocks that are thrown by enemy groups trying to steal her group's food, but if she can do that, then she can play goalkeeper (and captain) as well. Rigó, the second choice goalkeeper, sees their craft in more ways than others, but is sluggish handling shots from afar. Up close, though? They're gonna bring you to hell with their precision. Third-choice Brock makes up for his short stature with flamboyance between the posts, jumping and diving to great heights, but is prone to error by being too adventurous.

Defenders
No. 2 | Tisha Hermanson (she/her/hers) | RB | 24 yrs | 1.80m
No. 3 | Tóni MacConnell (he/him/his) | LB | 29 yrs | 1.94m
No. 5 | Álvaya Bosco (she/her/hers) | CB | 26 yrs | 1.77m
No. 6 | Albert Embla (he/him/his) | CB | 16 yrs | 2.00m
No. 13 | Florên Hadén (he/him/his) | CB | 32 yrs | 1.86m
No. 14 | Glen MacElrocc (he/him/his) | CB | 21 yrs | 1.84m
No. 17 | Quinn Grieve (she/her/hers) | LB/RB | 30yrs | 1.79m

It's really old meets new when it comes to the centre back pairing of Albert Embla and Florên Hadén — one is literally half the age of their fellow half-back. But they both speak the game of football so well, really, that their age gap doesn't make a difference. Embla dictates the tempo between the two because of his more calm demeanor compared to Hadén, but the latter manages to flair it up when needed. MacElrocc and Bosco, while not as calm or fluid as their counterparts, are solid players for sure. Hermanson is an expert crosser but be forewarned that her crosses are literally her one world-class attribute, which gives opposing players many advantages to score. MacConnell can do anything but cross, which makes him prone to this lot of things. Quinn Grieve, thanks to her feet ambidexterity, makes up for both of these players weaknesses but it sucks that there isn't two of them. You will likely find Grieve starting with MacConnell on the wings, with Hermanson subbed in late as the crossing expert.

Defensive Midfielders
No. 4 | Godfrey Testa (he/him/his) | DM | 25 yrs | 1.66m
No. 8 | Ekke Pemberton (she/her/hers) | DM | 23 yrs | 1.81m
No. 15 | Irma Beaumont (she/her/hers) | DM | 30 yrs | 1.76m
No. 18 | Bell Aristédes (they/them/theirs) | DM | 29 yrs | 1.79m

The defensive midfielder position, often considered the lone position in which Yttribia may have had some inklings of world class talent back in the days of yore, is (again) the only position with actually good players. Heavy defensive emphasis in this squad means a line-up of four DMs, with Ekke Pemberton considered la créme de la créme of this batch. Joining her is the equally formidable Bell Aristédes, who will time and time again prove their sought after combination of vision and strength in handling the ball.

The other two defensive midfielders — Godfrey Testa and Irma Beaumont — have a much less technical approach to ball handling but are some of the strongest MF-ers in the squad, which is ironic considering their size.

Attacking Midfielders
No. 7 | Driscoll Huerta (he/him/his) | RW | 26 yrs | 1.72m
No. 10 | Giselle van Ophoven (she/her/hers) | AM | 27 yrs | 1.75m
No. 11 | Letze Blasé (any pronouns) | LW | 28 yrs | 1.84m
No. 16 | Aled Kató (he/him/his) | RW | 20 yrs | 1.85m
No. 19 | Alinari Nervette (she/her/hers) | LW | 19 yrs | 1.71m
No. 20 | Mirabella Wilkins (she/her/hers) | AM | 29 yrs | 1.75m

Wing wise, you've got Letze Blasé as the first-choice left winger (and in more than just the pitch). Speedy and agile despite the height, Blasé flanks up the pitch like a cosmic supernova, but they just can't properly finish most of the time, so they'll often play setup for Mirabella Wilkins, who is lethal on poaching goals. On the right wing, Driscoll Huerta is among the slowest players participating among all nations, but he makes up for it with his deception.

Nervette fits her name's billing with being nervous but has immense potential to shine and become a premier left winger, especially given the age difference between her and Blasé. Another youngin in Aled Kató, his height may see him take over from Driscoll Huerta sooner rather than later, but needs to critically improve his technique if he wants to sniff a chance at the starting XI. And Giselle van Ophoven is literally just a store brand version of Wilkins.

Forwards
No. 9 | Kaapro Jaakko (he/him/his) | ST | 27 yrs | 1.77m
No. 21 | Marín Kelvin (he/him/his) | ST | 33 yrs | 1.89m
No. 22 | Jules Pound (she/her/hers) | ST | 20 yrs | 1.81m

The oldest of the starting XI, Marín Kelvin is the guy who will hit you where it hurts the most. Up close, right in front of you, and he'll wink at your opposing goalkeeper as the ball goes to the back of the net. Kinda like his ability to steal during the heyday of the country's Dark Times, defenders can be caught off guard by his ability to steal possession.

Kaapro Jaakko is more traditional in that he'll wait for lob and cross opportunities from the midfield to convert goals, being lethal on the volley, but won't try to be too adventurous.

Jules Pound, however, can be seen as the future of the Yttribian striker, as she has shown great potential to develop herself into a hybrid of Jaakko and Kelvin, but is still trying to get the best of both worlds down, and is still inexperienced in the game of football altogether, having played for just four years. But she's a prodigy in every sense of the word.

Manager
Arlo Beltz Palomo, the 43-year-old upstart, is the only one who can remember what life was like before The Relocation was announced. Granted, he was just a toddler, but still. And with that came the memories from his family members about the times in which Yttribia made a name for itself: the agony of losing a Campionato Esportiva on home soil, the joy of defeating Nova Anglicana to qualify for the World Cup on merit for the first time and—most importantly—the pride in being able to host a World Cup.

It's up to this manager to slowly, but surely, rebuild the roster and national football system to get the country up and running again and focused on the beautiful game it had once loved so dearly. Beltz Palomo, as a means of getting back to their national roots, is going back to defensive basics. While the nation did begin with a 5-3-2 sweeper formation, its true calling was a 4-2-3-1, which is exactly what Beltz Palomo will be using in his debutant campaign. Now the question for him is whether or not he can brush off the rust from a less-than-average nation and build a team that can get to that status of glory.

MAREIBAT WORLD CUP 84 QUALIFIERS SQUAD

Manager: Roy Tobin, Aged: 55
Assistant Manager: Ezekial Charlestown, Aged 45
Style: +0.75

Spiel: Mareibat continue to stumble on in footballing terms. This is a country which has suffered in the past and, on the long road now to becoming a stable democracy, will probably suffer in the near future. In order to keep morale up, the national team need to put in at least a middling performance this world cup. As usual, this is a fairly decent side and they can be expected to be a difficult banana skin for the qualification chasing teams, having probably found their level in the middle of the pack now.

Following the failure to qualify for the World Cup last cycle, Gavin Comi and the selection board for the Ethani national team both decided that it was of mutual interest for Comi to depart as manager of the international team. This left a period of soul-searching for Ethane in an attempt to reclaim the Ethanese national identity within how they played football. Most people thus expected a return to the more defensive style of football played under Curtis Steeling, which has been at the root of Ethanese footballing identity for many many years. Yet, an unorthodox appointment was made by the selection board, with James Bennett appointed as leader of the Ethani national football team for the 84th World Cup, with the decision also to sit out of the Campionato Esportiva this cycle made to finalise arrangements as no selection of players had been finalised for the competition in time. Bennett was considered an unorthodox appointment by most because his style of play seems antithetical to the Ethanese footballing identity, with his style of play actually more attacking than that of Gavin Comi, who was criticised for being too offensive. He also shirks strict defensive organisation, which is what many believed the footballing identity of Ethane to be based on, instead deciding to emphasise creativity, free-flowing football, and fluidity in formational tactics. His approach to formations, with no set formation but a number of formations which the team can switch between depending on the opposition and the period in the game, is one that seems most remarkable and honestly quite brave considering his relative inexperience in managing top international teams. His background is one of youth football, having worked with the under 21s Ethani team for the past 5 years, with relative success. However, this roster has a remarkable amount of continuity from last edition, perhaps recognising the potential this group of players has together.

Assistant Manager: Graham Imber; 46
Graham has been working with Bennett and the Ethanese under 21st for the past 3 years, taking the place of Harry Walker after his departure to manage a Fire League squad. He has developed quite a close relationship with Bennett and has learnt to apply many of the same tactical styles and gameplay to his management style, adopting many of the methods Bennett uses to his management but perhaps with a slightly more personal and gentle touch. However, there are a number of nuances between the tactics of the manager and assistant manager in this side, with Imber's ideas more suited to a defensive style albeit with the fluidity in playstyle that Bennett represents. Perhaps this was an attempt to drag the Ethani side more defensive, which certainly seems to have worked as Imber has over the past year drawn Bennett to a slightly more conservative playstyle from his all-out-attack approach.

The Players

With the change in management to a much more fluid approach, the player base has changed somewhat as well. The formational fluidity requires a certain fluidity in the players within the system. Thus, the positions are more widely spread with most positions represented, albeit with slightly less depth in the squad than previous world cups. More emphasis has been placed on creativity as well over ability to follow instructions and fixed demands to carry out specific roles, although this doesn't mean individual players aren't assigned individual tasks such as marking specific players, it just means they would be able to move with them even more with the fluidity of the playstyle of the team. Also note that just because a player is allocated a certain position within the roster, it doesn't mean they will be playing there all game. Bennett's tactical fluidity requires players to be able to adjust to alternative positions, with a more rotational style involved in the game too, thus meaning players under certain tactical instructions may operate as defenders, midfielders, and then attackers not uniquely but in a rotational cycle with waves of attacking play (think Rocket League-style rotational play - explanation here. But there is still a significant amount of continuity in the team.

GoalKeeper: Jeremiah Shepard | 33 | Blashpool City
Shepard is a great keeper with strong leadership qualities and great distribution in passing as well as his general all-round ability in goal. He has recently recovered from a crisis in confidence to re-assert himself as the top Ethani goalkeeper, although this is also down to the current dearth of options following a spate of retirements and an influx of foreign goalkeepers.

GoalKeeper: Nigel David | 34 | StoneHedge Rovers
Nigel David was an average goalkeeper but has proven himself more and more over the past couple of seasons. He is not the tallest of goalkeepers, but he is certainly not short and not someone to be messed with. He is intimidating to face up against in a one-on-one, imposing his body to restrict shot angles well. He also commands his backline well, very vocal in his dictation to his defensive line with his authority and vision respected by the other players at StoneHedge Rovers. Many of his domestic team's clean sheets can be attributed to him.

GoalKeeper: Isaac Chabalala | 35 | Rhayader
Chabalala is a weak goalkeeper in terms of distribution, so instead he opts for just pelting it upfield when it comes to pass-backs and goal kicks and hoping. But his talent is often overlooked due to his weaknesses and the weaknesses inherent within Rhayader. He often makes significant saves and is only let down by a poor defensive performance by his teammates in most matches, who seem out of place in the Flame League. He is a solid shot-stopper, with a fast reaction speed and a long reach although with age this has diminished slightly. His awareness and collection is average; he is far from a top international keeper.

Left-Back (LM/LF): Cai Woods | 29 | AS Bezieres (VLD)
Woods is a skilled Ethani football player. What he lacks in strength, he makes up for in his dedication to his training and the mastering of techniques, as well as the speed with which he can control and run with the ball. His pace is what makes him ideal for his positioning on the left flank. He can make a significant impact immediately in a team with his explosion of pace helping in defence but also in offence, making him well-suited to the fluid system adopted by Bennett.

Left-Back: Eric Morris | 31 | Bourne River
Morris is quite a creative left-back in his style of play. He likes to play fast-paced football, with a general impetus to get the ball upfield rather than keeping possession, making him a smart choice when employing certain offensive formational techniques, especially when chasing a game. Because he is quite a creative but malleable player, he can on occasion be caught on the break because of his general desire to bomb forward with pace. However, in a rotational style of play which Bennett employs on a semi-regular basis, this isn't a problem as players rotate back to cover his advances. His playstyle is also benefitted by the fact he is a talented tackler. His finishing and shot power let him down a little, but he can still prove a threat in front of goal given the right chance.

Left-Back: Antonio Atanga | 27 | Rhayader
Atanga is also often used as a pacey wingback, marauding down the flanks acting as a winger as well as a defender, providing an extra dimension on attack depending on the formation of play. He is quite skilled at dribbling at pace and has a few skill moves up his sleeves, as well as an accurate cross and finesse shot. He is slightly unstable on his feet though and a little too keen to go to ground, both when being tackled but also in his overuse of slide tackles which makes cards a slightly greater consideration for him. When on the pitch, could potentially take free-kicks.

Centre-Back: Ty Waldron | 33 | Old Sarum
Waldron is your typical bullish and strong centre-back. He isn't the paciest of players but does have a strong positional awareness to his game, and times tackles well. He also has good passing and distribution, rarely caught out. He also never really tracks forward so provides a good buffer even on the counter. Waldron is not afraid to get himself dirty and hurt to keep that ball out of the net, nor is he afraid to get sent off, if that is what it comes to. However, he is a rather composed figure so most of the cards he gets (only a few) come from tactical fouls. He is unlikely to be used when playing rotational football, although if Bennett wants extra assurances in defence then Waldron may find himself playing.

Centre-Back: Justin Crawford | 27 | Farrenton Athletic (EUR)
Crawford is a pacey player and is adept with the ball. He also loves to get involved on the counter and in set pieces. This can leave the defensive line at risk, as he does often stray from his position. However, he always has an idea up his sleeve and is very creative in his approach to the game.

Centre-Back: Nelson Romero | 33 | South Saints
An experienced hand in defence, Romero is a relatively good all-around player in his position. He isn't remarkable in any aspect of his game really but has workmanship that sees him stick in, go for it, and really put everything he can into defending that goal, putting his body on the line. He is of a quick pace though, his passing is just about average, his tackling and positioning are just above average, yet because of the effort, he gives that averageness is better than the showy nature of some defenders who put in less effort. He is a brutish figure and is very strong, providing him with the ability to muscle people off the ball. He is willing to aid in attacks, although struggles in slower play with slower buildups and possession.

Centre-Back: Craig James | 22 | Mansestra
A young player, Craig James is still far from completely developed in his game. His inclusion in this squad is mostly down to the desire of Bennett to include some youth in this squad, which he may be able to put more trust in youth next world cup if he can prove himself, with his selection somewhat limited by the selection board. James is an average paced player with a lot of confidence. This confidence is great when he is marking people, which he does really well at restricting players from making moves and tracking their movement, skilled at positioning. However, this confidence is not so good when he is willing to go to ground easily and doesn't have the same game sense as a more experienced player would have, thus making him slightly more prone to cards.

Right-Back: Daniel Baker | 32 | Olask Islanders (COS)
Baker is a very defensive player and prefers a team which plays defensively overall. This is because while he is a strong player in terms of his tackling ability, vision, and has average pace, he can be overwhelmed if he doesn't have the same level of support in defence. He prefers playing a 5 man defence but can go with a 4-man defensive line. He is relatively chilled in his attitude, but if the manager is pushing a tactic he disagrees with, he will sometimes very vocally oppose it, and sometimes refuse to play that tactic if he doesn't like the manager (aggressive, pushy managers are the type he dislikes). However, once he gets to know a manager well, and he gets on the manager's good side, then he is one of the best allies a manager can have.

Right-Back: Zakariya McArthur | 29 | StoneHedge Rovers
He's pacey so can bomb forward and provide an extra dimension on the wing in the attack, but also puts in a lot of effort so quickly tracks back to prevent counters. He commits, but not too much to leave him way out of position. He has accurate crosses, powerful shots. He reads the game well and knows when to cross when to go in for a shot, and when to stay back for the counter. He knows when to go in for a tackle and when to just block. He just isn't very good in pressurised situations.

Right-Back: Toby Turner | 21 | Bourne River
A young, agile, and fast player; Turner certainly provides an explosive aspect to his game. He is also relatively smart defensively and in positioning. His weakness comes in the offence, with his passing not up to standard and his crossing slightly lacklustre, though this are areas of his game which he is spending significant time developing, which Bennett will certainly help with considering their history working together as well.

Central Defensive Midfielder: Devon West | 34 | Blashpool City
Devon West is a reliable and well-mannered player, who holds great respect for all players, team and opponents. This is reflected in the way he plays: he quite often won't be fully abrasive in his style nor will he take a brutish approach. Instead, he acts as a conduit for the ball, but also as a presence in midfield. He is good at reading the ball, especially passes, making him good at interceptions, and he can make good tackles here and there; although he isn't the strongest player so won't really be forcing people off balls. He in nature would not work dropping back into a CB role if the team were to go more defensive because his skill set involves manoeuvring which he is quite good at, positioning, and good distribution. He sometimes goes forward on the offensive as well. He is of average pace and height.

Central Defensive Midfielder: Lewis Israel | 29 | South Saints
A bold and courageous player, Israel never shys away from a challenge. He goes into every game gung ho, clearing a path through the midfield for his team to operate in. He has a strong presence, and can pass well. But where his skills really lie is in interceptions and tackles, dominating the midfield space. But never ask him to go on the offence, because he can't shoot for his life and his game isn't well-suited to creativity.

Centre Midfielder: Leyton Underwood | 33 | South Saints
Leyton has a remarkable mind focused on attack, getting the ball forward and making advances towards the goal. He has pace, as well as the set of skills required to do well in the centre of midfield - passing, dribbling, the authority to dictate the game plan and the pace of play. He is a strong leadership figure within this squad and well respected, both in the team and abroad.

Centre Midfielder: Alexander Dyer | 30 | Northampton (AVN)
Dyer is a tactical genius in midfield, using his tactical knowledge to beat the opponents. His wit and concentration make up for his lack of pace, where he ends up taking a more distributory role in midfield, acting more as a playmaker than an attacker himself; Underwood often plays a more free-roaming role while Dyer holds the fort down in midfield. He is slightly more formulaic in his style of football, which can be a detriment when an opponent does the unexpected, and that does mean he is slightly more readable than other players, but he does have enough variety to offer up significant plays. He also has an eye for goal when the chance is open and there isn't a better option (he is an unselfish player). He generally advances on set pieces.

Centre Midfielder: Lewis Mickey | 30 | Johnho United (DAR)
Good awareness, positioning, passing, dribbling. Poor in the air. Can't tackle well, and his timing is bad, so prone to picking up a yellow card here and there. However, he knows when to play safer so generally doesn't get many red cards.

Centre Midfielder: Jaheim Zavala | 24 | Carredington
Zavala has a really attacking impetus to his game, dribbling and moving forward and always trying to force the pass on. He has good linkup play between the defence and offence, and is not afraid to try out new things. Occasionally drifts too wide leaving the middle open, but also covers for wingers well. Pacey. Doesn't offer up too much in defence, but working on his defensive game. A very bright future.

Centre Midfielder: Alexander Kjaer | 26 | Loconstead United
Kjaer is a calm and collected player but has lots to learn still. He puts the effort in, but he often doesn't know how best to approach a situation, making him prone to the mistake here and there. However, he is very much zippy and agile in midfield, especially when turning and shooting, providing a link-up threat or even an attacking threat himself when on the attack, especially effective on the counter.

Centre Midfielder: Milo Anthony
Anthony is a very agile player, quick in his movements and passes. He can often catch a defensive player napping with a pinpoint accurate through ball. He is quick to the ball as well, providing a presence in midfield. He isn't exactly the player you'd call on for defensive responsibilities though, despite him mucking in on occasion.

Centre Midfielder: David Bennett | 20 | Southern Hampton City
Bennett is a young and upcoming player looking to breakthrough with a big transfer either to a top Ethanese team or to a decent team overseas, using the world cup as a leapboard to do so. He is young and energetic, creative and talented. He has some talents in offence and defence, making him a remarkable all-round player. But while he is an above average player he doesn't excel in any department, just providing a balanced game which plays well into the manager's tactics regarding rotational gameplay.

Left Midfielder: Iwan Roberts | 29 | Makosile United (VIL)
He may not have the strength of some wingers, nor quite the same crossing abilities as some of the better wingers (although he can still whip some decent crosses in), but what he does have is pace. He is one of Ethane's quickest runners, and he has a decent dribbling ability, making him ideal for a team focused on attack - either counter or just full-out - with the core idea to rip apart and stretch the opponent's defence. He has this ability to draw the defence out to him by coaxing them before charging round them - one of his trademark moves.

Left Midfielder: Alex Woodrow | 30 | New Sarum
Woodrow is agile and flexible, thus able to dupe players with his skill abilities. But he isn't that quick a player. However, he has a really good cross and can pick out players in the box with precision. He is also good at set pieces, and is likely to play them if Atanga isn't.

Right Midfielder: Kyle Ford | 25 | Oakstone (EUR)
Ford offers a lot for the national team and is one of Ethane's most notable players. His style isn't founded on pace like some of the other players on the international team, although he is relatively fast and is working on improving his pace. Instead, he prefers to build up and keep possession. He is a strong dribbler, and has great awareness, especially in regards to crosses and through balls, the like which can tear open defences. He is also not averse to switching play a little and coming into the centre from the wing in an attack on the defence, letting the odd shot off here and there.

Right Midfielder: Stuart Harrington | 29 | Birdingstone United
A talented winger with good vision and passing abilities, Harrington is a master at switching play between sides, working really well with the opposite wing. He is great at positioning as well, and can catch an opponent off guard with his tackling ability.

Central Attacking Midfielder: Josh Montoya | 29 | Oakstone (EUR)
Montoya has a real ability to play and carry a team if needed. He's one of those players you can rely on to deliver when everyone else is having a bad game. Even if he's having a bad game he has that moment of genius that can make all the difference. Montoya is a mature footballer, showing wisdom and intelligence in his style of play and technique. He also has a deadly pace which allows him to rocket past defenders and tear opposition teams open. However, his main skills lie in his passing ability. His awareness allows for deadly through-balls and crucial passes, although when things aren't working out he can get a little frustrated and his performances drop a little. He can struggle under intense pressure, and is more injury prone than other players following a severe injury near the start of his career. He is also fairly reluctant to tackle because of this and doesn't offer much defensively.

Central Attacking Midfielder: Andy Obrien | 25 | Letson Town
He is dedicated and much more willing to put energy and time into training and into the game, making him an important player to have on the field because of how willing he is to get involved. He isn't necessarily fast either, but he is a great playmaker, and completely unselfish. He is solid at positioning, passing, and dribbling, which allows him to work and coordinate an attack from the front effectively.

Central Attacking Midfielder: Seth Vaughan | 31 | Birdingstone United
Vaughan is a bad-tempered but genius player who can often provide that crucial pass into the box. He often drifts wide for crosses and drops deep to collect the ball again and move it upfield due to his quality ball-at-feet skills, be it through skill moves or just generic dribbling and passing. He can be quite selfish, but is not stupid to squander a game because he wouldn't pass to someone else. Quite an independent player so doesn't generally integrate in the team community, although he does have a lot to say in the dressing room.

Central Attacking Midfielder: Ed Morin | 33 | New Sarum
A strong natural leader. Strong and ambitious. Always looking for that pass through the defence. Good at long-balls. Can occasionally be caught in possession. Strong work ethic, but often doesn't track back fast to help defend.

Striker: Mohammed Hope | 32 | South Saints
Hope is a very useful player to have on your team, specialising in long shots with his accuracy and vision proving integral to his striker talents. He is an impactful player. He is also good at headers - perfect for corners and free kicks. He has a powerful and accurate shot, which can often catch keepers off guard.

Striker: Scott Burgess | 25 | Loconstead United
Burgess is a very fast striker, allowing him to breakway and rip apart defences with his speed and surpise. He is especially effective on the counter attack, but is also very useful as a point striker, because of his vision and his short-range shooting abilities. He is weaker at long-range shooting, and is not the greatest at headers. However, he is a strong team-player, and fully dedicated to his team.

Striker: Declan Smith | 26 | IFK Aldenskoett (COS)
Smith has a real eye for goal and always seems to know how to turn every play into an opportunity on goal, even when it seems there is no chance on goal. He can score goals from anywhere and any moment, it's almost magical. His assist number is a lot lower because he is always looking for goals, sometimes meaning he ignores an obvious opportunity that a teammate has to score, making him seem a little selfish. However, he is always trying to do what is best for the team in his own eyes. He can dribble and move well with the ball, although he isn't the fastest striker in the world. However, he does have good vision and knows where to move to shoot and to receive a pass. This makes him a dangerous player to be facing.

Striker: Samuel Mitchell | 33 | South Saints
Mitchell is a natural star and is great with the press. He has decent pace, which brings him the ability to zip round opposition players, to get the best shot on goal. While his finesse and technical ability when with and without the ball is certainly not fully developed yet, he has the passion, determination and ability to get the job done, which speaks testaments to the great player that Mitchell is.

Striker: Lukas Cole | 27 | Falourr (EUR)
He is more of a team player and passes the ball a lot more than other strikers such as Smith. Sometimes, he can be too unselfish, harming his own goal tally, as he misses what could have been an easy goal for himself to pass the ball to someone else. This can also lead to mistakes in passing the ball, resulting in his team missing out on a goal completely because of a mistake. He is a relatively fast striker. However, he is weak on the ball and can easily be pushed off, so needs a little more space to shoot than other strikers. Doesn't like being under pressure too much.

Striker: James Rodriguez | 32 | Vegai F.C. (VLZ)
He is generally good in 3 aspects of play: heading and playing off crosses, shooting from range, and dribbling.

Striker: Denis Classie | 26 | Old Sarum
Classie is a smart, but back-to-basics, young striker. Acting as a target man, he can take it anywhere and make any turn needed. He's good with the head, both feet, or any part of the body needed, and is good running on to the ball with through balls, especially in one-on-ones but also good at longer shots. Basically, he doesn't do much else.

Tactics

While there is no specified formation due to the tactical fluidity employed by Bennett, there is a developed tactical system around which the manager centres his style. He takes a more offensive approach to this tactical system. The system is called 'rotational football'. It will be explained further in an interview and press release later on, but at its roots is the idea that constant pressure needs to be placed on the opposition, and the idea that individual players aren't stuck to their positions but can move around and change positions throughout the game, allowing a strong level of fluidity within the team's tactics. This isn't to say that this is all Bennett does; he does play more rigid formations when the situation arises, as well as approaching games with the idea of switching formations to catch out opposition teams. But at the root of his system is a certain fluidity in positioning.

Aaron St Pier is a 21 year old who plays for Norfolk Pinewoods and may be a player to watch for the future. The young defensive midfielder who played well for his club in the domestic season.   Aaron is looking to push his way into the starting line-up.

- Derek Barbour (MC)

Attackers
ST Sam Veera
22 year old Sam Veera, who plays for Mela Leuca is an adept finisher.  Whilst his key weakness is heading, Veera makes up for this deficiency through his understanding of the importance of positioning and often loses markers inside the 6 yard area. Veera, who prefers his right foot,  has excellent power and is often able to outmuscle his opponents.

ST Carlo Bannan

EURAN OCEANIA TERRITORIES
"The Expats"

World Cup 84 Qualifying Squad

National Introduction

Kit: Blue with combination livery of Euran gold and Syndicatian white. Alternative kit is the same colours are Syndicatian or "Revolutionaries" green.
Stadium: Flynn Arena, 96,500
Style Mod: +4

The Incorporated States of Euran Oceania Territories is a parliamentary federal dominion of Eura, formed of the Euran zone of the former Inevitable Syndicate and the Whittorian Islands. It has a population of just under ten million people which is quickly rising, making it a beacon of diversity home to Syndicatians, Whittorian refugees, Euran migrants and others. It has possibly the world's largest artificial crater, which dominates the landscape west of what is now New Fligsive, the capital of this new entity. Its home stadium is the The Flynn Arena, where Eura beat Polar Islandstates 4-2 in the famous 66th World Cup final. Few would have predicted that the colours of red, blue and gold would become permanent there but its happened, and the stadium is now back in good condition after an expensive refit to return it to the 96,500 capacity it held previously. Previously a wooden stadium, the current iteration of the Flynn Arena was rebuilt after a great fire destroyed the stadium during a game between Fligsive FC and Magnaeus City. Nowadays, it's a little more robust, having been the subject of many refurbishment projects over the years. The stadium was easily reachable on the Fligsive Metro before the violent overthrow of the Corvidae regime and the associated disaster in Fligsive. It now sports a combination of the old paint job as well as Euran blue and gold while the local club Fligsive FC are still in existence despite drawing lower crowds after the Mertagne exodus, though they do not play in the hastily cobbled together amateur EOTLeague.

Euran Oceania Territories formed a national football team not long after the founding of the political entity, a project conjured up by the Euran government Ministry of Sport to imbue a sense of cohesion among the diverse population of EOT. They played a series of friendlies against other "Eurasphere" sides from Endemia and Rushmore in a lengthy state subsidised tour. Their first games were defeats against Daera, Itor and the Ferguson Islands, before an unexpected 4-3 victory against Helving, despite their Euraleague star Scott Barnes scoring a hattrick. They then entered the 50th AOCAF full of excitement despite having a mostly amateur team, including serving military personnel, but were promptly demolished in the group stages by several teams. Now, with the citizenship laws relaxed to allow the growth of the Territories, the "Underdogs" as they have come to call themselves are suddenly confident that they might be able to pull off a shock or two. Their first manager was of top class pedigree - Tolgus Tregajorran, a footballing hero in Apox who is also well known on the international scene.

Tregajorran managed to persuade some former Apoxian internationals, playing in Eura and with no international allegiance following the temporary dismemberment of Apoxian professional football, to sign the relevant papers and make the surprise switch to EOT, as well as Euran's and other international exiles. After several years of bit part competition EOT competed in the World Cup qualifiers for the first time and in turn the Baptism of Fire, after the Sameban national team withdrew from the Endemian International Sporting Agreement and international football. They performed poorly at the Baptism of Fire, going out at the group stage, but put on a respectable showing in their qualifying group for the 80th World Cup. Tregajorran's unexpected departure and a chaotic period followed, ending with the controversial appointment of Euran footballing legend and cult icon Skorji Oslograd halfway through World Cup 81 qualifying.

Immediately applying Oslograd's "Skorjiball" approach - best summarised as an extremely aggressive and fluid attacking game interrupted sporadically by the manager doing something inappropriate - the team secured some noteworthy results but remains very much an underdog competitor. Oslograd's dream is to turn them into the living embodiment of "the way of the warrior" and to qualify for the World Cup. His first AOCAF was the first tournament where Olsograd was able to demonstrate his own approach to the game in full but the results were mixed. Then he led the side into World Cup 82 qualifying, but a dreadful start to the campaign snuffed out any hopes, although a later revival ensured a semi-respectable finish. But the team did lose a bit of its soul, playing more conservatively than previously, a trend that Oslograd reversed at AOCAF LVIII. The Expats excited fans with their performances and took the scalp of Valanora, easily the biggest victory in the young teams history before exiting in the knockouts against Banija. As a result the squad went into qualifiers for World Cup 83 and the following AOCAF largely unchanged, only to disappoint again. Several retirements and the ageing of players has left the squad looking weak for these qualifiers amidst rumours that Oslograd may quit, with his mind turned to helping grow the domestic game in the Oceania Territories - the launch of a new domestic league having now occurred.

Preferred starting lineup
Formation is...good lord, who knows. Really depends what side of bed Oslograd wakes up on. But the absolute madman will likely play a 3-4-3 of sorts, but really it’s more like a 3-2-5. If they are losing and need to score, they tend to stick with that. If they need to defend a lead Oslograd tends to be rather all or nothing, and will throw on the most defensive formation possible at short notice.

GK - 1. T Barton
RCB - 2. T Gerduns
CB - 5. K Strong
LCB - 6. F Law
RCM - 4. S Freeman
LCM - 16. G Richards
RW - 20. J Conway
CAM - 7. P Chadwick
LW - 11. K Fuller
RS - 10. T Duffy
LS - 9. P-L Le Tonnelier

Responsibilities

Manager: Skorji Oslograd
Head Coach: Skorji Oslograd
Father figure: Skorji Oslograd
Spiritual guru: Skorji Oslograd
Sexual counsel: Skorji Oslograd
Chosen One: Garret Ramsey
Captain: Willem Ajax
Vice captain: Tom Duffy

Penalties: 1. Peter Chadwick 2. Tom Duffy 3. Pierre-Louis Le Tonnelier 4. Samuel Freeman 5. Jowl Conway. All other penalties will be taken by Skorji Oslograd himself unless officials prevent him doing so.
Most likely to be found down the pub: Pierre-Louis Le Tonnelier
Biggest snake: Peter Chadwick
Least likely to win a quiz: Kasey Fuller
Most overrated: Tom Duffy
Most underrated: Joel Conway
Most likely to do something utterly inappropriate: Skorji Oslograd
Most likely to commit a crime: Skorji Oslograd
Most likely to look you get the point, the manager is unhinged all right?

I Give To My Opponent The Permission To:
=================================
Choose My Goalscorers: Y
Godmod Goalscoring Events: Y. Le T will score bangers only. Ramsey will score flukes only. Most own goals likely to be the fault of the plucky but unlucky Timwise Gerduns. Chadwick, Fuller, Freeman all likely to score. Strong deadly from corners.
Injure Players: Y, however I'll decide the severity. As for your own players, with Oslograd as manager. EOT players will deliver career ending injuries on command.
Godmod Injury Events: Y, however I'll decide the severity.
Red Card Players: Y
Yellow Card Players: Y
Godmod Other Events: Yes, but give me some warning/ask for advice unless its Skorji Oslograd doing something absolutely batshit in which case go for it. I reserve the right to contradict you in this case because he is a man who can bend reality with his sublime words after all. This is an unorthodox team, so feel free to be creative.

Tactics
Now with 100% less eye-candy graphics.

Ichi Tuzzio is much more of a strategist than a purist, and it shows in his approach to tactics. This is perhaps the (believe it or not) least attacking tactical set-up in the history of the Farf national team.

In goal, Íüé Tgô will be your traditional sweeper keeper. He will try not to be too messy with how he deals with the ball, though. Don't expect him to try to dribble past two or three defenders. The defense will consist of Kósa Bajnok, Ezequiel Marchiondo and Baldomero Teijeiro. Bajnok will be tasked with starting counterattacks with precise long balls and also defending the massive hole in defense that this formation leaves. He's not that good with the ball on his feet, truth be told, but he is fantastic at reading the game and has great physical presence, which alleviates the pressure on the Farf defense considerably. Marchiondo and Teijeiro will help him out defensively, but Marchiondo will still prefer to play wide. The two of them will be extremely tired by the end of any match, since they'll be running up and down the pitch the entire time, as well as trying to keep as narrow a defensive shape as possible. Teijeiro will look for the underlap since he's right-footed. Marchiondo will look to overlap for the same reason. Fermández and Teijeiro are fighting fiercely for the starting spot at the World Cup proper, so expect both to feature almost equally, with Teijeiro having the slight edge. Both players will carry out the role already described.

The midfield will be the traditional Farf midfield of one holding midfielder, two offensive ones and two wingers, but with a twist! One of the offensive midfielders has become a traditional centre midfielder, and the holding midfielder has been given some attacking duties. But what is this? Another twist! Faragó rue Cazade has been told to play further back in a new, hard-to-describe tactical role. The wingers have both been assigned more defensive roles, though they're still attacking ones. In essence: Sürgân t'Öéséné will be playing the fancily-named role of segundo volante. He'll be responsible for recovering the ball as any other holding midfielder, but he'll also look to arrive late at the box and go for perilous long shots or some smart assist. Vínseslâdís will be your classical centre midfielder, though, as a natural offensive midfielder, he's still adapting. He's very versatile, though, capable of playing on the wings as well as up front, so Tuzzio has decided to try him out in the role, hoping he'll pick it up quickly. On the left wing, Wçêíl will be running up and down the pitch, while coordinating his attacks with Teijeiro. He'll try to run down the flank consistently and go for crosses, though he's got a pretty dangerous right foot so you can expect him to suddenly cut in, too. On the right wing, de Sájajo will be expected to exploit his pace and dribbling skills, maybe get the odd precise cross in. Faragó rue Cazade will be tasked with dirty work in midfield (though not nearly as much as t'Öéséné and Wìjìnì), while also being tasked with joining the offense as often as possible from further back, in much the same role he used to play. He's basically been given double the duties. Expect him to tire out and get carded often. Tuzzio has baptized this role "takilante".

Xíxì Êns, Farfadillis' best player, will play as a false nine. He's rather minuscule, but it's hard to get him off the ball. In this role, he creates space for his teammates by dropping deeper and confusing the defense. He's fantastic at creating chances, so watch out for that. Also very good at finishing them, so overall a very troubling player to face, specially in this set-up. Finally, his partner up front will be Oskar Holsteiner, a forward that has everything needed to score goals. His job will be to finish the job whenever the ball gets to him.

The team will look to play a vertiginous game, with few passes wasted on recycling possession. Farves live to have the ball at their feet, but also to do something exciting with it. Expect them to press, counterpress and generally look desperate to recover the ball. The further up the pitch you manage to go with the ball, the more in danger they are. However, if you do lose the ball while attacking them, they'll almost always try to start a counterattack. They're very adept at it with their direct passes and astonishing pace, so try to make your chances count. Finally, the three-man defense will obviously use the off-side trap, as it's a natural choice with such a high defensive line and three players.

When holding a lead, the team will be much more eager to recycle possession and wait patiently for a goal. In that case, passes will still be direct, but less so. When chasing a game, though, expect some of the most urgent football the Multiverse has to offer.

As a final note, the players are quite versatile and can and will switch roles for periods of time at some point. Players likely to switch with each other are Êns with rue Cazade, Wçêíl with de Sájajo, and Wçêíl with rue Cazade. However, it's worth noting that whenever a switch includes rue Cazade, the other player will play a much less demanding role; that of a shadow striker. They'll be attacking midfielders that try to surprise the opponent by going forward aggressively as if they were strikers. Expect this to happen more often when chasing a lead.

The bench consists of players of similar characteristics to the starting eleven, with the exception of Lancelot Mojica, who can play anywhere centrally, and Elemér Miross-Lezocz, who is an old-fashioned poacher for when the situation demands for it. Edmün Çídh will likely get subbed in when fresh, young and very fast legs are needed.

TEAM CASSADAIGUA- World Cup 84

Coach-Stephanie Sweeney (56)- 7th World Cup
By getting Cassadiagua to qualify for World Cup 81, Stephanie was able to silence most of her doubters that were not impressed with the effort in World Cup 80. After World Cup 81, Cassadaigua has only continued to progress further and get closer to the dream of a third title. Therefore, Stephanie has completely safe job security at this time.

Starters in Green
Subs in Blue
Reserves in Red

Goalkeepers:
#31- Kelsey Morgan (31)- Starter WC 83, Sub WC 81 & 82, Reserve WC 80 & CR 30-31, Starter in DBC 41 & 42, Sub CR 29
#21- Robert Nunez (27)- Sub WC 83, Reserve WC 82, Starter BPC 1 & 2, Reserve DBC 42 & WC 81
#40- Tiffany Nelson (25)- Reserve WC 83, Starter DBC 44

The same group of three goalkeepers returns for World Cup 84, though the team will hope that only Kelsey Morgan sees any playing time. Morgan took over starting duties in WC 82 after MC 14, and has never looked back. This is expected to be her final World Cup, and it will be an interesting question if our next starting keeper became Nunez or Nelson.

Defenders:
#22- Lupe Enriquez (29)- Starter in WC 81-82, DBC 41, CR 29-31, Starter & Captain DBC 42, Sub WC 79 & 80
#3- Brooke Sutter (25)- Starter & Captain DBC 44, Starter SWC 6, DBC 43, Reserve CR 31, WC 82 & 83
#29- Matthew Donegal (27)- Sub WC 82 & 83, Reserve WC 81, Starter DBC 43, BPC
#24- Kimberly Carson (25)- Starter DBC 43

#4- Hannah Shanley (32)- Starter & Captain in DBC41, Starter WC 80-83, CR 29, Sub WC 79
#6- Ashley Crocker (31)- Starter in WC 82 & 83, Di Bradini 41 & CR 29, Sub WC 80 & 81, Reserve CR 31

#2- Jessica Curran (36)- Starter in WC78-83, CR 30 & 31
#28- Katie Standish (21)- Reserve DBC 44

There are surprises here, as three of starting defenders are new in that role for World Cup 84. That Jessica Curran is no longer starting is not a surprise, given her age, and she has been kept on the team out of respect for her service primarily. Brooke Sutter has been a highly touted player, so her starting is inevitable, but Donegal and Carson getting the nod over Shanley and Crocker was unexpected to some, but if you look at how they have played domestically lately, it is the right and smart move. Lupe Enriquez is still an extremely physical player.

Midfield:
#23- Sierra Mattison (31)- Starter WC 80-83, CR 30; Starter Di Bradini 41 & CR 29
#8- Shelby Martin (31)- Starter WC 80-83, CR 30; Starter Di Bradini 41 & CR 29
#9- Zack Pierce (27)- Starter WC 81-83, BPC, DBC 42, Reserve WC 80
#16- Meghan Wolcott (23)- Starter DBC 44

#25- Emma McKee (29)- Reserve WC 79 & 80, Starter DBC 41, CR 29, Sub WC 81-83, CR 30
#19- Preston Newfeld (23)- Starter DBC 44

#32- Courtney Graham (22)- International Debut
#34- Danielle Porter (20)- International Debut

This unit is mostly in tact, with Rachel Brenner being the only former start no longer part of the team as her play has declined with age. Getting the starting nod now is Meghan Wolcott, a player with a lot of flair and charisma. Her being a part of this team was only a matter of time. Mattison and Mayer are a great pair, especially on set pieces. Pierce is the all-time leading male goal scorer in Cassadagan history. Preston Newfeld, when in the lineup, is a very physical player.

Forwards:
#33- Hannah Ranucci (33) - Starter in WC78-83, CR 29 (** Team Captain **)
#71- Rachel Schanke (23) (Granddaughter of Jessica, who #17 is retired for. Hence the #71)- Starter DBC 44, SWC 6, Sub DBC 43 & WC 83, Reserve WC 81, CR 30

#12- Ashley Dahlin (27)- Starter DBC 44, Reserve WC 83
#27- Madison McClain (21)- International Debut

#26- Eddie Malone (28)- Sub WC 81, Reserve WC 82, Starter BPC
#38- Taylor Russo (21)- International Debut

Ranucci continues to be the captain, and we’ll warn all of our opponents now not to think that because #33 is 33 years old, that she is losing any of her ability. She is also highly motivated to go out this year, on home turf, with as much success as she can. It’s a natural handing over of the torch to Schanke, who going forward will be the goal scoring go-to player. Other regulars Caitlyn Mayer and Chelsea Monroe are not on the roster but are traveling with the team anyway as special assistant coaches to Stephanie Sweeney. Madison McClain is a speedy substitute to look out for.

Region—Atlantian Oceania

Nickname--since the end of the 1960's the National Team has been known as "The Bees", a period when the team's uniforms consisted of alternating black and gold hoops. While the bee is an element on the coat of arms of the Commonwealth—a long accepted heraldic symbol of industriousness--the association was actually a reference made in an Italian newspaper game story when the senior team was wearing the hooped shirts, referring to the BP team as il Bombi (the bumblebees) for their perseverance and swarming tactical play.

Colors--Black & Gold (while they are just 2 of the 5 main colors on the flag of Baker Park--Blue, Red and White are the others--black & gold have been closely associated in the nation's consciousness as representative of the country since its founding.)

For World Cup 84, the nation and the FAC have made a conscious choice to de-emphasize the Black & Gold which is traditional and to that end, the uniforms worn will be white, with trim incorporating all the colors of the flag.

Team Uniforms

Home - Away - Reverse

The national team receives its kits from two different companies, though the design for each is the same. Kits for the humanoid players (see above) are provided by Kirola Sportswear of Audioslavia, while those for equine and other non-humanoid players are provided by Generosity Sporting Equipment. The traditional Ponies kit is modeled after the national flag: royal purple with a sunrise orange sash; while goalkeepers typically wear a powder blue shirt with a white sash, inspired by the Regal Sisters' royal banner.

Manager & Staff

Appointed as manager of the national team before the 70th World Cup by the Hoofball Association, after Twilight Striker's resignation in the wake of a disastrous World Cup 69 campaign, Pearly White has since overseen Equestria's ascent to a hoofballing power and the realization of the Ponies' greatest ambitions. Her steady hoof has guided the Ponies to glory, and her recent induction into the World Cup Hall of Fame has cemented her status as a legendary figure in Equestrian hoofball history, despite her relatively young age. Pearly White's assistant, and current manager of the Whitetail Foresters, Dreamy Skies also remains with the Equestrian national team, at least for now, although rumors that the longtime Ponies assistant will be tapped for the top job by another association have only intensified after Equestria's World Cup 83 victory. Meanwhile, former national team midfielder Starlight Sparkle joins the Ponies' coaching staff as a second assistant manager, returning to the sport after enjoying several years of retirement. Her role as a team leader in Equestria’s first few World Cup campaigns should help her to succeed as a coach for the latest Ponies generation.

Manager - Image Pearly White (Earth Pony - Female) - 47
Appointed interim manager of the national team by the Hoofball Association following the resignation of Twilight Striker - the Ponies' long-time boss of some 12 World Cup campaigns - Pearly White secured the position on a permanent basis with a number of impressive performances against higher-ranked opposition in her first games at the helm, including a stunning upset of then-defending world champions Vilita in the 3rd Cup of Champions. Since then, Pearly White has done nothing to give her employers any doubts that she's the best pony for the job, leading the Equestrian States on a Runner Cup title run without dropping a single point and reaching the 4th Cup of Champions semifinals before capping it all off with a second round appearance at the World Cup finals.

Image
Assistant Manager - Image Dreamy Skies (Pegasus - Female) - 43
Not very long ago, Dreamy Skies was a rookie manager taking the reins of Second League club Whitetail Foresters. Her arrival had a near-instant impact on the club's fortunes as they were promoted to the United League the following season and now regularly contend for UICA berths, an incredible improvement in such a short period of time for a team once known largely for producing talent which was then poached by bigger clubs, at the Foresters' expense. When Pearly White first took charge of the Equestrian senior team, she managed to convince the HA that the still-young pegasus would be a strong addition to the Ponies' coaching staff, and thus far it has paid-off spectacularly. Players routinely praise Dreamy Skies for her enthusiastic optimism and superb work ethic which makes her a popular figure in the locker room and on the practice field.

Image
Goalkeeping Coach - Image Fire Blossom (Unicorn - Male) - 52
Responsible for training the Ponies' goalkeepers is Fire Blossom, whose exploits as a keeper in the old Equestrian Premier League earned him much respect amongst early Equestrian hoofball fans and eventually a job with the national team. Fire Blossom's prophetic praise of a teenage prospect named Gentle Breeze and his subsequent push for her initial selection to the senior team for World Cup 62 qualifying have since earned him a reputation as a natural judge of potential, not to mention a considerable amount of credit for Gentle Breeze's many successes.

Image
Scout - Image Diamond Star (Unicorn - Female) - 50
Originally chief scout under Twilight Striker with the Canterlot Royals, Diamond Star was later hired for the national team by the Royals' and Ponies' manager to help identify young Equestrian players with international potential, and the unicorn scout did not fail in her task. Among the current national team stars first scouted by Diamond Star are Thunderlane, Cloudchaser, Rainbow Blitz, and Pristina Shine. Now the manager of Stalliongrad HC, Diamond Star has seen her national team role diminished, though she still provides valuable advice to Pearly White regarding her observations of potential internationals within the United League.

Image
Scout - Image Golden Hooves (Earth Pony - Female) - 61
A veteran member of the Equestrian States staff, Golden Hooves has been around the national team for what seems like forever, her longevity speaking to her performance as a reliable scout. While fellow Ponies scout Diamond Star's focus lies primarily upon United League players and her evaluation of their potential with regards to the senior team, Golden Hooves is responsible mostly for scouting Equestrians on foreign clubs and assessing the Ponies' opponents and how their players compare with those available to the Ponies.

Image
Fitness Coach - Image Craig Jackson (Human - Male) - 50
Hired in the midst of the injury plague which characterized the Ponies' World Cup 63 qualifying campaign, Craig Jackson was the first human member of the Ponies' staff and has done well to keep Equestrian players' injuries minimal in the years since then. While fitness coaches generally don't get much respect or attention from the press, Jackson's gift for keeping players of various biologically-diverse species in near-perfect health throughout grueling tournament schedules which can push them above and beyond their limits is certainly nothing to be dismissed as trivial.

Strategy & Play Style

Image
Note: Players' names and numbers may not be updated, see roster for details.

The Ponies' most-used formation is the slightly modified 3-5-2, preferred by former manager Twilight Striker because of the strength and dominance of the Equestrian midfielders. Thanks to the versatility of the Equestrian States' players, the formation gives the Ponies the ability to shift quickly from the offense to the defense and vice-versa. More recently, however, the Equestrians have begun to shy away from the 3-5-2 in favor of the 4-2-3-1 in order to strengthen the back line and keep their opponents guessing. Aside from the formations themselves, the Equestrians have a number of definitive strengths and weaknesses.

First, the Ponies are among the world's fastest and most durable teams, using their natural advantages to tire out opponents. With those two traits as the defining characteristics of the Equestrian style of play, the squad excels at producing chances in the latter stages of the match. But while the attack dominates the second half, opposing squads have occasionally found success going all-out at the start of the match in an attempt to build an insurmountable lead.

Another area in which the Equestrian States has traditionally dominated is in the aerial battles for headers. While the Ponies are generally shorter than their opponents, the team is often credited with impressive leaping abilities (particularly among the pegasai players). Controlling headers makes the team lethal on corner kicks, and opponents looking to defeat the Equestrians must limit the number conceded to the Ponies or else face a barrage of dangerous short-range shots from the Ponies' attackers.
