Wonder Cup [Everything|IC]

Postby Qasden » Mon Nov 18, 2019 9:35 pm

Somewhere, deep within the cosmic abyss of the chromatic nothingness, rests a hunk of rock and water trapped in an eternal state of terror. Everything on and under it, from crust to core, atom to atom, screams a scream of harmonious anxiety, dread, fear, and most of all, passion. This existential crisis of space junk shields the horrid creatures that unintentionally seek to control and destroy it through any means possible, yet they express these devious plots as if attempting to save the fibers beneath them. They quarrel and seethe six meters under the metal and concrete muck they made themselves, and yet, they choose to parade with each other, cascading artificial colors rivaling the likes of the stars above on their own fabric armor. The beasts within them roar in the names of triumph, failure, and destiny. The small green blades they stand on are trimmed and replaced by exact replicas forged from elsewhere on the big rock. They generate webs as strong as pollution they make, yet they still celebrate. What kind of vile, nightmarish entity would kick and scream at the things they ruined?

Apparently, every being sitting on a big rock in the multiverse.

But why do they quarrel? Why do they shout to the heavens in euphoric defeat? How far are these barbarians willing to sacrifice their own lives just for a taste of the sweet nectar of...victory?

The Qasden Association Football Association (QAFA), in collaboration with the Crystalline Caverns Football Orginization (CCFO), welcomes one and all and all and one to the inter-multiversal football showcase of the stars, better known as the Wonder Cup!

Over the next few days, 16 teams from across the athletic spectrum will compete in a competition as heated as the core beneath the artificial turf of our fields. As the tournament progresses, the tournament's guests will be weaned from the spotlight in droves until the final showdown of 2 powerful titans at the otherworldly Royal T.V. Stadium in T.V. City!

Who will triumph in Qasden and become the football kings and/or queens of the stars? It's all going down right here, right now; don't miss your chance to watch the contest of the galaxy!

Lisander National Football Team for Wonder Cup - The National Eleven

Ok, there we go again ...
Leading Article, Carolina Hanwill, to The National
Adrian Stannis, new president of FLF, have the ambition to guide Lisander Football to a new age of glory. But he made it to the top of the Federation at a difficult time. Association Football, which has always been a fairly prominent sport, has lost many fans to basketball and worryingly to rugby as well. In the past, each sport had its own faithful fan base, but the advent of international competitions and the new professional leagues made football lose ground. "While it is harder and more expensive to establish sports like Cricket, Rugby and Field Hockey, at a high cost, on the other hand, the smaller number of nations playing these sports makes it easier for national teams in these sports." Stannis said recently in an interview for BFOOTBALL.

Football, an international passion, is played under virtually any conditions, and there are always more than 150 nations registering for each World Cup. Not participating in the event is practically isolating the nation from the footballing world. Under the baton of Alfred Delmas, the former FLF president, Lisander has taken many steps backwards. Although Lisander made excellent campaigns in the WCs 80 (when the team reached the Play-offs against South Covello) and 82 (when the team was only one win away from the Play-offs), the disorganization of the federation managed to destroy all this effort, and the National now sits in a shameful 130th place in the rankings. If Lisander had kept the streak since the 78 World Cup, this team would probably be preparing in style, with friendly matches against major nations such as Kita-Hinode, Valanora, Nephara, Apox ... However, if what we have for the moment is the Wonder Cup, we will have to satisfy ourselves with the Wonder Cup and do the best we can.

I don't write this with the intention of devaluing the Wonder Cup. After all, there are several respectable teams in the event. Ko-oren, Qasden and last but not least, world number 4, Cassadaigua. But still, we will have a B team, a U-23 team and even a U-18 team. Games like this can be counterproductive for Lisander's football. If the team is very good and wins, the result can be a bit complicated to analyze, considering the context. And if the National is defeated by these extremely young teams, the fans' confidence will sink.

Honestly, we're not in a favourable position to choose an opponent. So the only choice is taking the oars and rowing everything back in the rankings, first to the 59th place we had at the end of WC80, and then as much as possible forward.

"What about the team?" you ask me. I answer: It's the same as IAC 8. Andreas Fox didn't call the youngsters to the Wonder Cup. He wants to give the veterans time to play. It could be the last chance for some of them, like Luis Avila, Yoann Dawson and Arthur Adler.

Uniform
Neo hasn't produced new uniforms for Lisander. The Nation keeps the WC82 uniform. A new set of uniforms is expected for WC84.

Coaching Staff

Manager: Sharip Timayev

Sharip Timayev, a former footballer in the lower tier of Nahkistani football, has been appointed manager of the national team for the Wonder Cup and World Cup Qualifiers. The national league is heavily defensive, as most players do not have the technical quality to play any other way. There is a lot of fouling and pragmatic football. Hoofing it up the field to a target man striker is a common tactic. What Nahkistani players do have in spades, however, is heart and passion: they will often out-work even higher-skilled opponents. Nahkistan will line up in a 4-4-2 formation for the duration of the tournament.

Group/Schedule

The Wolves have been drawn into Group C for the first round of the Wonder Cup, alongside Silver Beach, Cassadaigua and Freeport. The schedule will be as follows:

MD1: Nahkistan vs Cassadaigua
MD2: Silver Beach vs Nahkistan
MD3: Nahkistan vs Freeport

Team Previews

Salamabad Daily (state owned media): It is time for the glory of our nation under the glorious President Mokmad Gatayev to be revealed on the international football stage. The Nahkistani Republic will enter international competition beginning with the Wonder Cup as it prepares for World Cup Qualifying. It is clear that the passion of our players will deliver us success. Who are the players that will lead our nation? Sirazdi Ibragimov is the national team captain, and he is our greatest player. He is the greatest scorer in Halharaklass history, and the enemy defenders will fear him when he is on the ball. Dzhamaladin Avtorkhanov and Nail Vedzizhev are intriguing youth products coming into the first team, and they inject youthful passion into the team. At the back end, Mukhadin Gatayev, the son of our glorious President, is the greatest left back in the world and his talent will be clearly revealed at this tournament. The Wolves will begin their international football journey at the Wonder Cup, and we expect all Nahkistani citizens to show them total support.

Nahkistani Diaspora Daily (news for Nahkistanis abroad): The Nahkistani national football team will be making its debut at the Wonder Cup, and for those of you who want to support our homeland, here is a guide to the team. We should not really expect much out of the team, other than showing the passion expected whenever the national jersey is pulled on. We aren’t going to score many goals, but the ones we do will probably come off the boot of Sirazdi Ibragimov, perhaps our only truly great player. There are two young players coming up that will be exciting to see, those being Dzhamaladin Avtorkhanov and Nail Vedzizhev. Vedzizhev in particular, if he is able to move out of the Halharaklass soon enough, could develop into a true talent. We should be solid at the back, and goalkeeper Lechi Usamov is a solid option and will have to do good for the team to have any success here. The most controversial decision here is obviously the inclusion of left back Mukhadin Gatayev in the squad. He is the son of President Mokmad Gatayev, a man who, as most of you know, is a brutal dictator and war criminal. Mukhadin Gatayev is not good enough to play in even our Halharaklass, and is only in this position due to political influence. We should only hope that this same political influence will not demand he starts in our games. We understand that it will be difficult for many in the diaspora community who have been directly affected by the Gatayev family to support the team due to this black cloud, but we encourage you to support the national team: our brothers and sisters back home will be liberated one day, and perhaps the success of our national football team could play a part in that.

Team Cassadaigua- World Cup 84 Prep Team

Introduction- For Cassadaigua, the Wonder Cup is a series of organized friendlies to prepare the team for World Cup 84. There will be many friendlies played by the team to ensure the team is prepared once the actual World Cup is played on home soil.

Therefore, Cassadaigua does not have a set team for this tournament and is bringing a group of players that will have a chance to get playing time at various points of the competition. Because of this, there is not a group of players designated as starters, substitutes, and reserves; and we are carrying more then the typical amount of people on the roster.

Please pay attention to my RP preceding each match for the lineup of players that will be playing in the upcoming match. In the event that I fail to RP this in advance, you are free to choose your own players that played in the match from my list of players.

PS- If your team would like to play us and we never meet in this tournament, please contact me and we can arrange a friendly. For any such friendly, we would like to play it at home unless you are ranked in the top 40, then we will be willing to travel.

Now then, the roster...........

World Cup Preparation To Begin,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

By now, unless you have been living under a rock, in which case I doubt this would be the first news article you would read, you know where the next World Cup is going to be played. We are still some time away from when the best two teams in the world will be playing at Dagan Airways Stadium in Concord Heights to determine the champion of World Cup 84. We don’t know how many teams will officially attempt to qualify for the World Cup, but Team Cassadaigua and the Commonwealth of Baker Park already know they’ll be part of it and do not need to have the stress of a qualification period. That will also mean that other nations could potentially be more prepared then the host nations. But there is a solution.

Bring on the friendlies! There is no doubt that CASE (Cassadagan Association for Soccer Excellence) is preparing an aggressive season of friendlies to make sure that the Fillies will be on their best stride once it’s time to play for real. A home and home friendly set has already been arranged with co-host Baker Park but more games are needed. Lo and behold, the Wonder Cup! This is a tournament organized by Crystalline Caverns and Qasden which will at least provide three games for the team. The tournament will mean different things for different nations. New nations will be looking to make a statement and others just want to win a tournament. Others may send a “B” squad or an age-restricted team. Those facts will mean that any kind of international rank a nation has can be thrown out. The organizers already did that, literally, but also figuratively, you can as well!

All of the players on the expected Cassadagan national team will be a part of the tournament, but don’t expect to see all of them play at once. And if you don’t believe me, this is what manager Stephanie Sweeney said about the tournament,

“We will be participating in the Wonder Cup. While styled as a tournament, it will be considered a series of friendlies for us. There will be at least three games, but hopefully we can advance to that second stage to get three more games out of it, and then perhaps a knockout stage. However, our focus will be on using these on team preparation, and there are some people I have to get a closer look at as well to determine if they should be a part of the main team. If we’re in a situation where our third game is a must win to make the second stage, we’re not going to approach it differently. We can get our warmups somewhere else if we needed to, but playing here in a structured tournament is a good test for us.”

Cassadaigua’s matches will be against Nahkistan to start, and then Freeport and Silver Beach.

The Starting lineup for the Nahkistan match is: Morgan; Shanley, Enriquez, Standish, Daniels; Mattison, Martin, Wolcott, Graham; Monroe, Dahlin

Serving as substitutes: Nelson, Crocker, Sutter, Southwick, Hayden, Mayer, McClain

Mace Gumbel reports on the just-released Spring and Summer Schedule for the Andromeda National Soccer Team.

“As most of you know, the Andromeda Sports Commission pushed forward a re-entry into International soccer competition last year. It has been several years since the Eagles won the 41st Baptism of Fire.”

“After a decent appearance at the 8th Independent Association’s Cup last fall, the Eagles will get into full gear, beginning the New Year with the Wonder Cup in January, World Cup Qualifying from February until April and either the World Cup or the Cup of Harmony in June.”

“With me to talk about the draw as well as the Eagles’ first forays into International competition is Eagles Head Coach Wilhelmina Jones. Coach Jones, how would you assess the performance of the Eagles so far?”

“Overall, I’d say we’ve done well considering that we hadn’t fielded an International Soccer Team in several years. In the IAC last fall, we made it to the knockout stage.”

“The team has picked up a few additional players since last fall.”

“As you know, we have our collegiate soccer season in the fall. We saw some standout performances from players we had overlooked when we initially chose our roster, Like Brea Curry & Milynn Williams. We want our team to be the best of the Andromeda Archipelago, Mace.”

“And what of your chances in the Wonder Cup next month?”

“I’ve just got a look at the draw & it looks like we’ll have to work it out. You could say that we were a bit unlucky in the IAC as far as the draw, but the more work we put into our play, the less we’ll depend on luck this time around.”

“Well said. Coach Meena Jones, thanks for taking time out of your holiday to speak with us.”

“No problem, Mace.”

“Coverage of the Wonder Cup begins on the first Saturday of the New Year. Times to be announced. We’ll be right back after these messages.”

Andromeda Islands vs. Bolgano
Municipal Ampitheatre
Taxson
88th minute

The Andromeda Eagles had held their own with Bolgano up until this point. A final attack was orchestrated by the Bolgans until it was thwarted by reserve defender Brea Curry. She and Rochelle Wyatt passed the ball between them for the last minute until Curry was apparently clothes-lined by a member of the Bolgano offensive line. There was no call against the player, but Curry retaliated by lunging at the player who had knocked her down. Then, IT happened.

Curry, a senior at the Andromeda Naval Academy, hadn’t traded licks with the player, but she got her revenge. She grabbed the player’s shorts and pulled them down to his ankles. The player stumbled over his own shorts, falling onto the pitch, losing possession as the referees blew a whistle on the play.

“Unsportsmanlike conduct. #38. Andromeda.”

“Ref, are you blind?” Rochelle Wyatt saw the whole thing. “They were on Curry like white on rice. She got clothes-lined.”

“All I see is that full moon you just let out,” the ref said, referring to the unfortunate Bolgan player.

After handing out yellow cards to both Wyatt and Curry, the referee walked away. The Bolgan player attempted to pull up his shorts, embarrassed at what has just happened. Wyatt continued to complain.

“All night, ref, you’ve been giving us the short…”

Wyatt was distracted by what she saw… or didn’t see on the embarrassed Bolgan defender. She couldn’t help but laugh.

“…The short end of the stick.”

----------

With seconds left in the game, the Bolgans prepared for a penalty kick on the Andromedan goal. The previous two penalty kicks by Bolgano failed to produce any goals. Both Brea Curry and Rochelle Wyatt were ejected from the game, leaving only Jackie Bishop to help goalie Steve Young. If the Bolgans fail to score on this kick, the game will be a draw.

“This isn’t right,” an Andromedan fan yelled from the stand.

The penalty kick is good. It sailed just beyond the reach of goalie Steve Young, bouncing off the goal post and into the net just as the game goes into injury time.

Final Score: Bolgano 1, Andromeda 0.

----------

Coach Jones stands over a desk in the coach's office, gathering her things. Most of the team has gone back to the hotel. Brea Curry walks into the office to talk with Coach Jones.

“I’m sorry, Coach. I should have let it go.”

“No, Brea,” Coach Jones said. “When you’re treated unfairly, you fight back.”

“But you said we were supposed to be first class,” Curry said. “We’re supposed to represent the best face of Andromeda.”

“And that’s what you did. That guy was fouling you the whole second half and for most of the half you took it as if it didn’t bother you. He pushed and pushed and pushed. You can only turn the other cheek so many times.”

Curry giggled.

“What’s so funny?”

“Dude got to show us a little more than cheek.”

The ladies laugh.

“Yeah. Just a wee bit more.”

Different Faces Lead Team To Victory,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

When she was 16, Meghan Wolcott seemed like a sure thing to have a big career on the international stage. So too did 17 year old fellow midfielder Preston Newfeld. The two of them led the way in the Sporting World Cup back then, but neither have materialized on the World Cup roster. At 18, Meghan tore her ACL while playing for New Lakeland, and it cost her the season. Preston Newfeld, that same year, found himself the target of a domestic violence allegation. Two names that seemed promising had their career derailed. Not to mention, even if those did not happen, the midfield position of the national team was accounted for of players that were young enough themselves to continue to hold their positions on the field.

Meghan Wolcott came back at 19 and had a solid season for New Lakeland, but the injury bug struck her again a year later, when a knee injury cost her more time. While she was good when healthy, her reputation was now becoming that she was injury prone. For Newfeld, the allegations against him proved to be unfounded, and the woman that initially made them was sentenced to prison for 90 days for filing a false police report. This led, naturally, for many to mention that Cassadaigua still has a long way to go in terms of gender equality, since that woman would be back out on the streets after three months. Newfeld, due to those allegations, was suspended by his team in Winchester, and he struggled to regain his form. The following season, Newfeld found himself suspended for a total of eight games due to excessive red cards over the course of the season. He was always a physical player, but he would get far more careless with that type of play. As if things could not get better, the following season, he held out for the first nine games demanding a contract extension from Winchester. Team personnel were reluctant to give it to him as there was uncertainty about if he was a player who had peaked already, or still had upside. While Winchester would not be considered a small market team, it is a team in a market that has no tolerance for “prima donas” and that was the label that Newfeld now had. Newfeld was traded to Brattleboro, and his career has seen a rebirth due to being surrounded by older and more mature veterans that were able to teach Newfeld that right way to do things.

In New Lakeland, Wolcott continued to shine, and her call to the World Cup 84 prep team is a testament with how hard she has worked. She didn’t miss a single game last year, as she looks to shed the label of being “injury prone”. In Brattleboro, Newfeld has learned to play smarter, and has been carded far less often. He has matured, and now his call to the prep team gives him a chance to show Cassadagans, let alone fans from across the globe and even beyond that, that he is a better player.

Manager Stephanie Sweeney coached the Sporting World Cup team that year. “I thought Meghan and Preston were great leaders. That was the same team that produced Rachel Schanke, and while she was a good leader on that team, Meghan and Preston really stood out to me as being people who had real bright futures,” Sweeney told me after the game, “They played in the midfield with one another, and I knew that after I invited them to the team, that I had to get them in the same game. I gave them the chance to play with two regulars, Sierra (Mattison) and Shelby (Martin), and I thought that would give them the best chance to showcase their ability.”

It certainly would. During the 1-0 win over Nahkistan, Cassadaigua controlled the midfield for the entire portion of the match that all four were out on the pitch, and that carried on even when both Mattison and Martin were subbed off in favor of Taylor Southwick and Lauren Hayden. Wolcott picked up an assist on the 29th minute goal that was scored by Chelsea Monroe, and was solid throughout the match. Cassadaigua probably could have won this game by a larger margin, but will take the 1-0 final result. Defensively, Nahkistan did present a few good challenges, but Kelsey Morgan, who is expected to return as the World Cup starter once again in goal, proved to be too much for the Wolves to handle. Nahkistan seemed to have a heavy defensive approach, but in some ways it looked like they were in a react mode throughout the game to what the Fillies were doing instead of trying to create things on their own. Perhaps that can be understood when you are a new nation taking on a two-time World Cup champion.

In other news, it was announced today that Jessica Curran, who was a rock as a defender for the last several World Cups will be joining Stephanie Sweeney as an assistant coach during the World Cup. Curran is still an active player for Suburban Concord Heights FC, but as mother time slows her down a little bit, she has moved on from international play. The former #2's spot on the pitch is the one spot that several players can consider up for grabs. Her jersey number also probably is up for grabs. Right now, no one is wearing the number, but it will be worn again.

Starcom wins 1-0

QASDEN - James Sa'afa looked like a man among boys today when it came to the Star Boys 1-0 win over Darmen. Thats because Darmen sent a bunch of boys to fight the men of Starcom. A much needed morale boost after the infamous 8-1 drubbing by Natians and Nosts in Copa Esportiva XXV, this 1-0 victory saw James Sa'afa dominate the Darmen team singlehandedly. Despite some sloppy passing from teammates Sa'affa could catch up and slow down to anything and when his team needed him he got busy, scoring on Darmen in the 22nd minute. When his team needed him, James made a key tackle on Virgil Orenstein, that knocked the ball away and into the welcoming arms of Jeff Vernon.

The game was quite back and forth, lots of issues with passing meant that turnovers were a plenty, Passes were turned over an amazing 40% of the time, but James Sa'affa was able to complete 70% of his passes and received 95% of ones passed to him. Starcom Officials said it was likely due to poor turf at the Qad City facility. There has been no comment by Qasden officials over these claims. From TV I will say the field looked fine.

In the end here James had the following to say. "We needed a good win like this. THe N&N game is still fresh on our minds and we want to get it out of our head. We played the best we could and Jeff saved everything you threw at him. We are so...so...glad and happy about this game." James did some fists pumps after the interview and continued celebrating with his teammates. FOr the Star Boys this is their World Cup as the the CE XXV Performance made the Starcom FA not sign up for this cycles World Cup. The next game will be against Geektopia, who beat up the surging Baker Cup B-Team 1-0. They have a 3-5-2 formation lead by Bisuperior Bigrand Enormatrixul and Gaggolseptenunex in goal.

Bolgano 1-1 Lisander
After the victory at the last moment against The Andromeda Group, the team faced another team that won the first game, Lisander, in the past faced in a friendly that won Lisander 2-1 at Bolgano Stadium.

The referee sounded the whistle and the game began, Lisander had several very hard attacks in the beginning and seemed a clear winner, but Bolgano defended with all espicalment Deds, with an equalized match, they went to rest.

Razor: Please I want to take the win, you have to find spaces, getting weakness in the alignment of Lisander will be difficult, just like ours.

Evans: Should we continue playing as the beginning?

Razor: On a defensive issue, at the moment yes, you just have to wait for some attack.

Nines: Only 45 minutes left, We win this S *** T !!!

The second half began, Camden kept trying a goal, Potenza focused on the area and the defense took it out, Camden made a hard play, and when kicking Liavoni reached in, he already had yellow and ended up ejected, so as not to leave the broken defense Hedd had that to go down to the defense and Frizzel left the game and entered to debut, Morgan Bars, the 10 of the U-21, but already exceeded the age, Potenza patio the penitentiary and Nines stopped him, but the rebound did not manage nor to guess it, 1 -0 and the time progressed, minute 62 and Lisander's happiness continued, Razor asked to play the offensive, in the 70th minute, they had an attack by the right wing, Bars looked for the goal but Michaelichen stopped it, minute 87, Bolgano was Dangerous looking for that goal, hard work could not be in vain, Birgot made a center to the area, Michaelichen cleared it with a punch so that from Volley, the debutant Morgan Bars made a great goal in the left square.

1-1 finished, the players exchanged shirts and left thinking about the last game, to qualify Bolgano must beat Greater Cebu.
Ranking KPB: 95 (8.24)
Trigram: BGN

Ranucci Looks Sharp Against Freeport,
by Chelsea Dufresne, Concord Heights Times

The second game of the Wonder Cup would be the first time that team captain Hannah Ranucci took to the pitch. The forward is now 33 years of age, and there is some suggestion that this will be her last World Cup cycle. That is not set in stone, but her position is often one that is occupied by younger players, and there is plenty of youth in the system that is capable of taking over that starting spot. Hannah does not seem like the type of player that would return to the team in anything other then a starting role, so things do point to this being her last time on the team. Being able to play the World Cup on her own turf would certainly be an incredible way to go out. Once she does decide to hang them up at the international level, there will be discussion about whether her #33 should join the list of retired numbers, making her the first player since our return to international play to get the honor. Obviously, she is not thinking about that, but those of us in the media are. A strong run in the World Cup could clinch it.

For now, though, she returned to the pitch against Freeport wearing the pink and black. “I am excited to be here, obviously. Having the chance to play the World Cup on one’s home field is something that many players do not get a chance to do. So in that sense, I am really honored.” Ranucci told reporters. Hannah has been a vocal captain, starting in World Cup 81 where she answered critics of manager Stephanie Sweeney, and then continuing in the last Cup when she insisted that there was no locker room split with the promotion of Rachel Schanke to starter over Cailtyn Mayer to play beside her. Mayer also insisted that there was none, and lo and behold, there was none. In World Cup 84, the expectations are high and Hannah knows it, “If you look at the last World Cup, both of the hosts did really well on their home fields. It was one of the great stories of the tournament, and with this team improving and getting closer it seems, the expectations are high. They are within our locker room, that is for sure.” Right now, she knows what the mission is, “We’re in the Wonder Cup preparing for the World Cup. That, of course is different then it is for everyone other then us and Baker Park who are assured of the World Cup spot. At the same time, we know how good we can be, so even though we are in a prepatory mindset, we’d like to win this tournament, too.”

On the field, Ranucci and Caitlyn Mayer were in mid-qualifying form right from the start, but the team from Freeport did put forth a valiant fight early on. Brooke Sutter, seen as one of the favorites to take over the starting spot that Jessica Curran vacates in the backfield, made a huge play in the 10th minute stopping a three-on-one rush that the Freeport team was able to muster. Robert Nunez, who was the scheduled substitute for the last World Cup team was the stating goalkeeper, but on this play, he did not have to make a big save thanks to Sutter. This was the best chance for Freeport early. The Fillies had some quality opportunities too, but needed 32 minutes to score the first goal of the match, done by Ranucci, working a give-and-go with Caitlyn Mayer. Seven minutes later, the two of them worked their magic again, but it would be Caitlyn Mayer getting the goal. The second half saw the teams play even soccer, and Rachel Schanke make the most of her time on the field, coming in as a sub in the 67th minute. With the score 2-1 Schanke scored in the minute matching her jersey number (71), to restore the two goal lead, and that is where we ended.

After the first two games of the competition, Cassadaigua is on top of the group, but still are maintaining their proper focus. It seems pretty good that they will clinch three more of these “friendlies”. Without any further adieu, here is the lineup for the Silver Beach match:

Starters: Morgan; Donegal, Young, Sutter, Blaney; Pierce, Hayden, Wolcott, Newfeld; Schanke, Dahlin
Subs: Dickson; Enriquez, Sorrentino; Mattison, McKee; Corston, Bridgewater

Andromeda Islands vs. Greater Cebu
Merellin Park
Elder
47th Minute

The Eagles went into halftime with a 2-0 lead. Coach Jones’ halftime pep talk hadn’t been anywhere as desperate as her pre-game remarks. She, like the rest of the Eagles, want to advance, which means winning out over the next couple of days. The Eagles all seemed to be on the same page.

Midfielder Rick Sprinkle passes the ball to Oona Kerry. Kerry, who scored just before halftime, is arguably the best striker on the National Team. Kerry passes to Dolfo Martinez. Martinez backs up to assess the situation. He raises his hand and gives a signal before going forward.

Before his defender gets too close, Martinez passes to Thomas. Phil Thomas shakes his defender. It’s only the goalkeeper between him, Steffi Tucker, and the goal. Thomas kicks the ball hard toward Steffi Tucker. The ball ricochet’s off Tucker’s thigh and bounces in.

Andromeda 3, Bolgano 0

As the crowd cheers, Tucker has a word for Thomas.

“Ow.” Tucker smiles as she rubs her thigh. “Warn me next time.”

Phil Thomas, Oona Kerry and Steffi Tucker have each scored for the Eagles. The crowd seems more jubilant now than they were when Thomas scored at the 10-minute mark. The Brea Curry incident in their first game had an adverse effect on the Eagles reputation. It seems now that the incident is all-but forgotten.

-----60th Minute-----

The ball is in the midfield. All of the midfielders and defenders have been substituted. D.L. Dandridge has her foot on the ball, waiting for the signal from the front court. Phil Thomas talks with Dolfo Martinez.

“I’m telling you, Dolfo. Carla DiGregorio IS that good.”

“No way. A freshman?”

“When she comes in, I bet you she scores.”

“No way.”

“Dolfo, I’m going out. Carla DiGregorio’s coming in. I’ll bet you she hits pay-dirt.”

“You’re on.”

-----81st minute-----

D.L. Dandridge again has her foot on the ball, just behind the midfield line. She sees Martinez, Kerry, Carla DiGregorio and JD Campbell in the front court. She gets the signal from Martinez. Dandridge maneuvers her way through two opposing midfielders before kicking the ball to Martinez.

Martinez sees DiGregorio as he gets the ball. They both have shaken their defenders. Only the goalkeeper stands between them and a fourth goal. Martinez, on the fly, decides to kick it to the opposite goal bar. As the ball is about to sail over Carla DiGregorio’s head, she jumps up. The ball grazes DiGregorio’s forehead ever so slightly, then bounces off the opposing goal bar into the net.

Andromeda 4, Greater Cebu 0.

-----After the game-----

Phil Thomas goes over to Rudy Martinez as they both walk back to the hotel.

“Pay up, Dolfo. I told you she was that good.”

As Martinez pulls out some money, Carla DiGregorio walks up to Thomas and Martinez.

“What’s up?”

“I bet Senor Rudolfo here that you would score before the game was out.”

“But I didn’t.”

“You scored that last goal. It bounced off your head.”

“It just missed my head. That goal was all Dolfo.”

Martinez, who knows very well that Carla’s head altered the course of the ball, plays along.

“So, YOU pay up, Mr. Phil Thomas.”

Phil Thomas pulls out a few bills and gives them up to Martinez. He gives DiGregorio a wink. Deep down, Thomas knows that Carla DiGregorio scored that last goal.

“See you at the hotel.”

As Thomas walks away, Martinez looks at DiGregorio,

“What was that?”

“I’ll tell you about it, over dinner, at that place across the street at say, 8 o’clock?”

At that moment, Martinez realizes that Carla DiGregorio is even better than Phil Thomas thinks she is.

“I’m buying!”
