General visitor information
Kelssek is a country of soaring mountains, vast wilderness, natural beauty and frigid winters. Its population of over 153 million is easily stereotyped as a bunch of bilingual commie sports nuts. As a multicultural, immigrant society, it is one of the world's most cosmopolitan nations. As a leading tourist destination, Kelssek draws well-heeled sophisticates and grizzled adventure-seekers alike to its lively cities, unspoiled wilderness, organic local handcrafted unionized vineyards, and completely epic skiing and mountain resorts. Politically, Kelssek consists of a centralized federation of 12 provinces and one territory, governed as a republic under a system of parliamentary democracy. Its economy is largely composed of co-operative enterprises and companies directed by democratic worker’s councils.

Kelssek boasts high-quality transportation infrastructure, with the Velocit high-speed train system being the most cost-effective method for shorter trips. Velocit trips between eastern cities like Outineau, Neorvins, Redswyth, Clayquot or Breton take 2-7 hours. Trips from the coast to the interior take longer, with 11-hour overnight trains that run from Outineau or Kirkenes to Burnaby, and a similar time from Latrobe to Ulyanof. The same trips take 3.5 hours by air.

Kelssek is a union of some distinct and diverse cultures, but in general foreigners will find locals to be laid-back, friendly, and to have very little sense of social hierarchy.

Money
Kelssek's currency is the thaler, written as τ (lowercase Greek letter tau) or t, which is divided into 100 pence (d). The exchange rate is roughly 1 USD = 35d, or τ1 = USD 2.86. It comes in coins of 1d, 5d, 10d, 25d, τ1 and τ2, and notes of τ5, τ10, τ20, τ50 and τ100. Foreign credit cards are accepted and will work in major bank ATMs. Because of the merchant fees card issuers charge, businesses often impose a τ5-10 mininum to accept a card. There are capital controls in place but no visitor is going to even notice them unless they're going to buy a house or something.

Typical prices of things:
Pint of beer: τ2
Late night kebab: τ3.20
Dinner and drinks for two at an upscale restaurant: τ30-40 (tipping is not customary in Kelssek)
Souvenir stuffed beaver: τ6.99
One night in a backpacker hostel: τ10
Prices tend to be around 15-20% higher in Burnaby, Latrobe, and Kirkenes

Laws and policing
The legal age to purchase alcohol, tobacco, and other recreational substances is 18. The possession and consumption of all recreational drugs are legal, but their sale and production must be licenced; you are not breaking any laws by having a meth lab, but you are if you make and/or sell meth without a licence, but why would you when you can get it from a middle-aged clerk behind the counter of the government dispensary whose professional manner barely hides their judgment of your life choices. Firearms are heavily restricted in Kelssek; the average citizen can apply for a licence to own hunting rifles if they want, and a handgun if demonstrably necessary for their work, but otherwise guns are basically illegal.

Venue information

Cathysceau, Wynleth-an-Glyndwr (capacity 37,800)
Home stadium of Wynleth Cambria. An intimate, single-tier ground a 15-minute tram ride from downtown.
Wynleth is the provincial capital of Noua Cymru, a city of half a million with well-preserved medeveial architecture. Attractions include: Guilds Square in the centre of the old city, the Wynleth Belfry, a 500-year old bell tower that plays carillon music every afternoon at one o’clock, which is also close to Wynleth Cathedral, an imposing Gothic structure. Confederation Park, a beautiful green space centred around the Parliament Buildings of Noua Cymru, and dotted with monuments and statues that may or may not be problematic. Best place for a beer: there are several bars and restaurants clustered around St. David Place, also adjacent to the leafy campus of Wynleth University.

Canada Stadium, Neorvins (66,300)
Located in Commonwealth Park, a recreation and sports area across the Suter river from downtown Kirkenes. Home of Neorvins Armada.

Neorvins is the federal capital, a large city with a metropolitan population just under four million. It hosts a large number of public institutions and museums catering to a wide range of interests; indeed it’s the more esoteric ones that are probably more worth a visit as the most famous art pieces tend to be in Outineau or Kirkenes. These include: the National Capital Exhibition, a museum of Kelssek’s social and political history, the Royal Palace Museum, which focuses on the former royalty and the Kelssek Revolution, the Parliamentary Art Gallery, the Bank of Kelssek Monetary Experience, which makes central banking as thrilling as possible, the Museum of War and Peace, housed in a decommissioned nuclear bunker, and Polar Institute, which educates visitors on life in the far north and the history of polar exploration. Other sights to see include the Parliament of Kelssek public tours, Queen’s Market and Guilds Hall, Place Paul Langlois, Shawinigan Gate, the Revolutionaries Monument, and pleasant walks can be had in Federation Park, Kieran Pearson Park, and Parc Elliot-Trudeau.

Stade Outineau, Outineau (capacity 80,500)
The largest stadium in Kelssek which has previously hosted the Rugby World Cup and soccer World Cup finals and is home to Nordiques RFC. (see NSwiki).

Stade Olympique d’Outineau (capacity 55,300)
This stadium was the centrepiece of the 5th Summer Olympics. The soccer team CF Outineau plays matches here if they expect to sell many more tickets than their regular home stadium has seats. Otherwise, lacking a regular tenant, it rents out its space for stuff like rock concerts, flower shows, and monster truck rallies. About 4km east of downtown in the Maisonneuve district, it’s directly connected to the Pape métro station.

Outineau has an NsWiki article too. A major city with a huge metropolitan area, it is primarily French-speaking and a centre for education, technology, aerospace, engineering, and commodity futures trading. It’s also the provincial capital of Beaulac. The popular tourist things to do are to check out the historic Ville-Baptiste, the oldest part of the city, the lively and vibrant streets of the Plateau-Mont-Phare and Quartier Faubourg , look at art in the Musée des Beaux Arts and Musée pour l'art d'aujourd'hui, eat poule mouilée or viande fumée, possibly in a poutine, and go to one of the music, beer, coffee, literary, comedy, and art festivals that are always going on.

Stadium Konoha (capacity 54,500)
Home of the Burnaby Lions, as well as Kelssek’s most notable soccer club Burnaby SC. Retractable roof and pretty lights, access via Stadium B-Train station. An unusual feature of this stadium is the jumbotron suspended above the playing surface.
Burnaby is the centre of Kelssek's 3rd-largest metro area with a population over 7 million, nestled between the mountains and the shores of Lake Konoha. The city and its surroundings is a mecca for outdoor sports especially skiing, mountain biking, and climbing. A walk along the Seaforth Park Trail promises spectacular views of the mountains, lake, and the landmark Sanoqua Gate Bridge. Junction Beach was Kelssek's first clothing-optional beach and its adjacent Khatsalano neighbourhood was a focus of the new-age counterculture.

Kanard Park, Clayquot (capacity 32,600)
Home of the Clayquot Reds (and the Clayquot City soccer team), the stadium is located adjacent to the University of Etnier campus and along the south bank of the Kewatin river.
Clayquot is the provincial capital of Etnier. Its major industries are agriculture and biomedical research. Its main landmarks are the 328-metre North Star Tower, always nice to go to the top of, historic St. Boniface Square, the Northlands Theatre, and the Clayquot Fort National Historic Site, location of a major battle during the Kelssek Revolution.

Macquarie Docklands, Latrobe (55,700)
Home of the rugby and soccer teams of Latrobe AFC, the "Dock" is located on the city's former port area which is now full of yuppies and overpriced bistros.
Latrobe is a city of 3.5 million and clocks in as Kelssek's 5th-largest metropolitan area at over 5 million. It has a lively music and arts scene, two top research universities, and is a centre for the software, media, and auto industries. The Museum for Human Rights is a relatively new landmark just off Republic Square, the historic heart of Latrobe where visitors can take their pick from a number of restaurant patios o patronize. The small shops, cafés, and galleries of the old city's winding alleys are a diverting way to spend an afternoon. Arts and culture sites include the Kelssek Centre for the Moving Image, National Gallery of Etnier, the People's Opera House. Nagorno Park along the Yalumbia river is the city's landmark green space and dotted with art sculptures.

Whalleysbridge, Mazinaw (35,800)
Home to the Mazinaw Stallions. The stadium has just completed repairs after being damaged by a disastrous flood that forced over 80,000 of the city's residents to evacuate.
Mazinaw has a metropolitan population of 3.8 million and is the administrative headquarters for the bulk of Kelssek's energy and natural resources industries. Much to the architectural regret of subsequent generations, the city's first boom years were in a time when concrete brutalism was in fashion, though some appreciate the sense of high modernist utopia that characterizes the city's East End. Most tourists pass through on the way to mountain resorts or to view the glaciers of Icefields National Park.

Commonwealth Stadium, Vickery (41,500)
Home of Vickery RFC, the stadium is co-owned by the University of Conryia at Vickery. As it's not fully enclosed, consisting of two large stands on either side with much shorter ones at the ends, fans can look at the surrounding mountains if the match fails to entertain.
Vickery is located on a high plateau formed by the Cradle Ranges and is the provincial capital of Conryia. The glass pyramids of Legislature Square are a city landmark. The Strathcona neighbourhood retains much of its artsy and countercultural charm despite being increasingly subject to gentrification.

Millennium Park, Redswyth (53,500)
Redswyth Rebels, reigning Superleague champions, are the home team here. Millennium Park is in the western part of the city and replaced an older stadium known as Bankstown Lane. The heritage frontage of the old stadium was preserved during construction and is now the access point for beer, hot dogs, and other stadium catering offerings.
Redswyth is a post-industrial city that is still home to a great deal of aerospace and auto manufacturing. Its time as the industrial centre of Kelssek leaves its legacy in the city's impressive Gothic revival architecture. Dorson Quays, the banks of the Northern Canal, and Eastbourne Road are the most interesting neighbourhoods to find nightlife and interesting shops. Other tourist attractions include Redswyth Castle, the oldest portions of which date back over a thousand years, the impeccable landscaping of the University of Redswyth, the Museum of Industry which covers both factories and the labour movement, and the modern art collections of the Great Northern Gallery.

Pacific Park, Breton (42,700)
Home of Breton RFC, located in the city's South End.
Breton (Breçan in French) was founded as a military fort and the ancient Breton Citadel, which occupies the hill overlooking the city, is its main landmark and tourist site. Its large natural harbour is today used as the largest base of the Kelssek Navy, and the city's naval heritage is a major feature of Shearwater, the district across the harbour from central Breton adjacent to the base. Breton also has a large student population as home to three major universities: Dartmouth University, Saints University, and the University of Haligonia. Attractions include Granville Square, Keefe's Brewery, the Maritime Museum of Kelssek, and the deliciously fresh seafood offloaded at Dartford Market.

Stade de la Gerlandie, Champjaune (31,400)
Home of the Alouettes de Champjaune.
Champjaune is a small city of 350,000 in the centre of Beaulac’s cheese-making and malt-growing region. Brasserie Petits-Anges is the city’s favourite patio. It may not look it but the historic Théâtre des Prairies has a reputation in Kelssek’s heavy metal scene.

Stadium of the Stars, Ulyanof (44,600)
The graceful upward curve of its concrete roofs stands as a tribute to what people 50 years ago thought was futuristic. Home stadium of the NGSA soccer club.
Ulyanof is the provincial capital of Lupinissia, a prairie city built on agriculture industries (mostly wheat, cattle, and corn) and the Western Mutual insurance cooperative. Despite being a large city of 4 million, it’s known for a friendly, laid-back, country culture. Microbreweries and bistros are thick around Platt Place and the Lorimier district. The surrounds have got great spots for whitewater rafting. The ultramodern Art Institute of Lupinissia is the city’s newest architectural landmark.

Trade Unions Park, Torbay (20,700)
A newly constructed stadium in cooperation with Midlariat University, aiming to be the home of a new Rugby Superleague team. Two grandstands with smaller open seating behind the goal areas.
Torbay (pop. 250,000) is the capital of Kewatin, gateway to the spectacular Fjordlands National Park and the main harbour of Kelssek's northern coast. The city is known for its colourful wood-panelled houses, Bellegard Lighthouse, and the annual Tall Ships Festival. Any local bar will be able to supply a shot of the province's renowned Old Toehold rye whisky whose historic distillery is also open for tastings.

Griffin Park, Novonaya (39,200)
Hosted athletics events and the closing ceremonies of the 12th Summer Olympics. Home of Rotor Novonaya RFC.
A city of over 1 million, Novonaya was the historic stronghold of the Vanardian warlords who imposed order by force of hooves and arms on the surrounding plains. The rodeo and equestrian competitions of the Lupinissia Fair will not be on during the RWC, but a pleasant taste of the nomadic marauder life can be had at Prairielands Park. Hipsters and craft beer can be found in [d]Dogeport[/b].

Waterfront Dome, Kirkenes (72,600)
Stadium with a dome-like retractable roof now reopen after extensive renovations. Home of Kirkenes Crusaders. Will host the final.
Kirkenes is the biggest city in Kelssek, a huge and bustling multicultural metropolis. The city's character comes through in neighbourhoods like Little Ariddia, Bathurst Gardens, and Lancaster Hill. Fashionable boutiques and other opportunities for bourgeois consumerism are located in the Rosewood area. The 540-metre Panopti Tower is an iconic landmark, the St. Jude Market is a good stop for fine foods or a quick meal, Melbourne Square and Caron Street are where to go out, and the Museum of Global Civilization is pretty cool to learn about history and cultures and stuff. The Loyalist Fort National Historic Site is where the enemies of the revolution holed themselves up. The city also has a lively microbrewery scene. See also the street map, and the TComm Subway.

Pratapgadh National Rugby Union Team

Pratapgadh Rugby Union decided that they won't change anything in this year's squad as they believe this team is quite good and can still play well. Though many of them are a bit old, the players say they are fit to play. Muaaid al-Nazir, Padmesh Vishnuvarjala and Muneef al-Abdulla will be playing their final world cup before retiring, both of them are currently 35 years old. In RUWC 27, a lot of players didn't get a chance to play, but the manager says this time he will give more opportunities to other players as well. After a heartbreaking defeat against Elejamie, Pratapgadh National Rugby Union Team have come back not as an underdog, but as a kingslayer.

Tactics: The Darmeni game puts an emphasis on territorial advantage, thereby making the team's kicking game its most important asset. Darmeni teams will go for three points at any chance they get; receiving the resulting kick-off following the score will give them an advantage in possession as well. Scoring actual tries is very much an afterthought.

Rugby is the third most popular sport in Elejamie, behind ice hockey and football. While rugby league has a small but loyal fanbase and the ERC Sevens (held before the start of the ERC season) is a massive success, it's rugby union that reigns supreme in Elejamie. With the ERC being very successful since its inaugural season in 1978/79, the ERC Grand Final being one of the most-watched sporting events in the country and the Elejamian Universities XV (an all-star team made up of the best players from universities around the country) having an annual tour that tends to sell very well, as well as a plethora of talent over the years, it's safe to say that rugby union will be popular in Elejamie for years to come.

In the last tournament, Elejamie were slight favourites to win the tournament; not necessarily sure favourites to win the competition but not a team to avoid betting on. And, indeed, after their opening bye, they got right into action with a 17-12 victory over the Natanians and Nosts before losing narrowly to Kita-Hinode, 14-10. However, they bounced back in style with a 48-13 demolition of newcomers Pratapgadh and a 30-0 shutout over obligatory "one-and-doners" Griemvarant. After a gritty, gruelling and muddy rematch against N&N, which saw Elejamie win 5-0 with the sole points coming from an unconverted try from Adam Gates, they went on to beat Apox 18-6. After they got their 27-15 revenge against Barunia, the team that had defeated them at the Rugby World Cup before this one, they reached the final where they had to face the hosts Ko-oren, a tough team with a solid defence who had effectively dismantled Lisander 35-7. Both sides showed off their strong defences, with Ko-oren lead 3-0 going into half-time thanks to a penalty from Nimrod Whithingham, but it was Elejamie who'd come away with the victory when, 74 minutes in, Eddie Campbell took advantage of a Ko-orenite error and stormed his way up the pitch, passing it over to Terry Huang who'd score the winning and only try of the match, which was easily converted by Paul Debenham. They managed to hold off a desperate Ko-orenite defence for roughly five more minutes before David White received the ball and kicked it into touching, giving Elejamie the 7-3 win and, therefore, the Cup.

And now they're back to defende their title. Missing a few players from the last tournament due to retirement (Onuoha, Oldaker, Peralta and Holloway) and injury (Morgan, Moreno and Ikarashi), it seems like they're in for an uphill battle. However, most of the core talent from the last tournament are still there and, with some graduates from the EUXV as well as a member of the Maracalo Cup winning side at the last AVBF Sevens in Adam Gates, it seems like they'll still have some gas left in the tank. Will they be able to do as well as they did last time, if not win back to back trophies? Or will they get complacent after that win and make an early exit? Only one way to find out really.

Laneriti Stadium, Coventry, AVEN
Image

Home to the national football team and the national rugby union team, Laneriti Stadium was built in 1955 after the Elejamian FA decided on a permanent ground for the national football team. After narrowing down 400 options down to three, they eventually decided to name it after Arik Lanerit (aka Laneriti, d. 1915), a famous Iyilim politician who helped shape this country just as it was getting started. Originally designed to fit 60,000 people, it was expanded in the mid-90s to accomodate 82,500, which has remained the official capacity ever since. It has hosted every single Cup of Elejamie final since 2000 (as well as 23 previous cup finals before that) and all but one ERC (Elejamian Rugby Championship) Grand Final since the play-offs were introduced in time for the start of the 1990-91 ERC season; due to scheduling conflictments, the 2011 Grand Final was played at the Edgebaston Dome, with the Murgon Bullfrogs beating the Auckhampton Birch Trees 20-15 in extra time.

The stadium in the background is the Starmath Den, home ground of the Starmath Rovers football team in League Two and Coventry Jesters rugby union team, which play in the Elejamian Rugby Championship, having been promoted at the end of the last season. It's also used as the training ground for the national football/soccer team, with the national rugby (both codes) team having its own training ground outside of Coventry. It can also hold up to 15,000 people.

  • Adam Gates (FB) can also play on the wing, David White (L) can also be a Number 8/Eightman (much like when he was a substitute) and Adrian Drew-Ciobanu can either be a loosehead or a tighthead prop.
  • Despite having the same surname in both their names, lock Bruce Hernández and loosehead prop Enzo aren't related

"The Waves"

The Waves keep their World Number #1 ranking going into World Cup 28, and will be looking for a good finish. There have been a few changes to the line-up, with some older players hanging up their boots, and some young blood coming up through the ranks. The powerhouse scrum-pack has been added to, with most players coming from Newland Power, by far and away the best forward pack in Barunia's Rugby Union Championship (RUC). They are aided by a pair of experienced flankers in Martin, the only player in the squad to play overseas, and Mortlock, Barunia's ageing captain and leader off the Bucks, the greatest RUC team of all time. Stoneman has been elevated to the Number 8 jersey, having been in the second XV last cup. Ravenhill has also been promoted to the starting XV ffollowing the retirement of Monty O'Shea. 18-year-old Craig Smith, the RUC young player of the year, steps out onto the right wing. The other teenager on the team is 19-year-old Jack Martinez-Young, who will act as the understudy for legendary fullback Mike Rogers, who'll likely have Barunian hopes resting on his mighty right foot.

Play style
Barunian players tend to look for the gaps rather than plow through the opposition. They'll use the full width of the pitch, and will often use long passes to catch opposing players out of position. They favour a kicking game too, and will take any opportunity for a field goal. Penalty kicks are preferred over a scrum, and they'll also chase after balls kicked forward in regular play.

National Rugby Team of the Kyrjasmark
"The Einherjar"

It is said that rugby is a hooligan's sport played by gentlemen, and there is something about the truth of that that speaks to the soul of your average Borkyr. They have never forgotten that they are the descendants of great warriors, and even the team's name, Einherjar, refers to heavenly warriors who will fight alongside the gods at the end of the world. The Borkyr certainly have the passion, ferocity and physicality to be successful at rugby. Where they come unstuck is the more technical aspects of the game: passes are missed or fumbled, line-out throws end up in opposition hands. With that in mind, the coaches' are looking to use this tournament as a learning exercise, gaining experience in those key areas against some of the best in the world. With that in mind, the 33-man squad will likely be rotated through each game. The team is a mix of old players, including the 33-year-old captain Vilhajalmsonn, and younger up-and-coming players such as the teenagers Strand, Haraldsonn, and Holt. There is one pair of brothers in the team: Ulrik Stefansonn and his younger brother Nicolai will form the second row of the scrum pack. Free kicks and penalties will usually be taken by which ever player is the fly-half position at the time.

SavojarSports.sj - inside reports from all Savojarna
Savojarna approach RUWC 28 with a focus on Niskanen

The long-lasting captain of Savojar rugby, fly-half Kristjan Niskanen of the successful Sumanen Pohjoiseen team, will terminate his career after Savojarna's third showing in the Rugby Union World Cup. The campaign will thus largely focus on Niskanen, who is the face of rugby in Savojarna and probably the only player widely known throughout the country. Other than that, rugby has a long history and tradition in the country, but comparatively few follower because of its lack of professionalism, localised popularity and lack on international success compared to other smaller sports like handball, where the Savojars are a dominating force internationally. Nevertheless, the World Cup often draws some attention from the generally sports-crazy population of this country. Four years ago in Ko-oren, they suffered from a slight lack of confidence that led to the Savojars missing out after a painful 9-18 loss against Juvencus. Together with the scheduled loss against Abanhfleft, that was only enough for the third place in the group, but Savojarna managed to stay among the world's fifteen best teams, hence they still kept their position in the second pot. With the draw having been relatively friendly to the Northlights, they are looking forward to allowing Kris Niskanen a final appearance in a knockout match.

Rugby in Savojarna

Savojarna's rugby culture is relatively young, even though similar games have been played in the nation since the middle ages. Mediaeval football games were very popular in Savojarna and looked probably more like today's rugby, often ending in a vicious brawl. In fact, it was so bad that the authorities had executed a total of 9 men in 1241 for playing a football match carrying swords, which apparently did not remain unused. In later times, Savojar warriors enjoyed a game that is seen by Savojars as the direct predecessor to rugby, and was often also played with blunt weapons as it was seen as a preparation for battle. Many of the traditions from this game carried over to rugby. One of the most notable ones is that instead of singing national anthems or similar songs, historically both teams would pray and occasionally offer goods to their respective favoured Gods in what modern viewers would probably compare to something between a fan chant and a war cry. Nowadays this is largely ignored in international games as the SRFB considers the ceremony a bit outdated, however before Savojar league games the tradition is still alive. If the opposing team has a pre-match ceremony, Savojar national teams will often answer with a divine calling themselves; and Savojar fans often perform the ceremony in the stands while the teams line up.

Nowadays, Savojars have widely accepted the rules of international rugby, although in 2011 a referee was noted for having sent off a player in a lower-tier match in Northern Sumanen for violating Rugby Savojarna's ban on tourney swords. Rugby is primarily popular in Sumanen and in the North of Vestrholm, with Finns playing an important role in the national team. Russica has traditionally no connection to the mediaeval prae-rugby culture of Savojarna, and long rejected the sport as a sport of the Savojar conquerors. However, after the Revolution they increasingly accepted the sport and built up their own teams, but have relatively few top players or teams. The Savojar league is an amateur league, with the teams representing the old Savojar provinces. Fourteen teams contest the championship, with the three sides Sumanen Pohjoiseen, Keski-Sumanen and Sumanen Etelä (North, Central and Southern Sumanen respectively) traditionally being among the strongest. Other notable teams are Thorslän, Jarnslän and Norderholmen, with the strongest Russian team usually being Jaromirskaja. The Savojar league only very limitedly allows intra-league transfers, which has been considered to harm development by some.

Playstyle and team features

STYLE: -1.5

What has remained from Savojarna's martial traditions is a strong emphasis on physicality and power. Savojar teams are notable for being full of tall guys - a general trend in the Savojar population - and train their strength a lot, leading to many hard hits. The team has strengths in the standard situations and often seeks the direct way through the middle. This tactic has proven to be able to occasionally wear down stronger teams while it often outright suppresses weaker opposition. In defence, Savojarna close their ranks fast and collapse onto the man on the ball, trying to get people to the ground as fast as possible and prevent a fast passing game, which is their biggest weakness. While most players are not notably explosive, many of them (especially in the back) can develop fearsome speed once they have accelerated.

What is also notable is that Savojars have extreme respect for worthy opponents, and will generally prove a lot of fighting spirit but almost never resort to unfair actions. While some guys on the team do have a bit of a short fuse, this does not manifest in dirty hits or violent action, but in shouting at the opponent or challenging them to a fair fight. Attacking an unsuspecting opponent, or backing down from a confrontation and resuming it in a more advantageous moment, is considered extremely shameful in Savojar culture. Someone who does it against a Savojar can be expected to have to answer to the team, which has a notably strong team spirit.

Coaching
The side is led by coaching duo Sigurdur Olausson (56) and Göran Svensson (51) from the Jarnslän region. The duo met as coaches of Jarnslän for seven years, before they resigned because they said that the Jarnslän team was no longer suitable to their style of rugby. With the Savojar league not allowing the necessary transfers to fix that problem, the two chose to find a new job and did so with Thorslän, where they worked until the RUWC 27. Following the most recent cup, the SRFB decided to full-time employ the national coach, leading to the two resigning as Thorslän coaches. Nominally, Svensson is the head coach, although de facto they work as co-coaches.

Front Row
Traditionally a bastion of Russians, this front row is no exception. Kravchuk and Razov are very strong and notably heavy, with Razov being measured at 183 cm and 136 kg. Johan Liman is a bit less physical than the typical Savojar hooker, but he is widely considered the fastest hooker in the Savojar league and hard to tackle due to his fast turns. Virtanen is a bit more technically adept in open play than Kravchuk, with Rajanov being the stereotypical Russian prop who is primarily strong in a scrum. Helamäki is not as fast as Liman, but considered very strong in the scrum as well, and one of the most accurate passers in Savojarna. Virtanen and Helamäki play very well together due to being clubmates as well as good friends off the pitch.

Second Row
Traditionally a strong area of the Savojars, who are extremely tall and strong. Both starting locks are over two metres tall, with Nilsson measuring exactly two metres and Poutirainen the tallest in the team with 207 cm. Both of them are accordingly not very fast when they have to accelerate, but can reach surprisingly high top speeds. Especially Nilsson is known for extreme force and a tendency to go in head first and just throw himself into an opponent, often with success. Lundholm has had a string of very solid seasons in a weak team, and his ability to steal balls at lineouts or with his tackles has led his team to some surprising upsets. Suvarov is known as the fastest Savojar lock, as well as the best tackler among the four of them, and will likely come on in defensive situations.

Back Row
Among the fans of Sumanen Pohjoiseen, the duo of Urho Markkanen and Valtteri Netanen is known as "the Gates of Orjalahti", after the oldest city in the North and its rugby centre, which has a big city gate. The two have earned that name because they are considered to be as large and impassable as the eponymous gates, with strong tackling skills and strength. However, after Netanen has recently shown some issues with handling the ball and is not the fastest flanker around, he has been replaced in the starting lineup with Lavrov, who is better in those areas but said to lack stamina a bit. As a consequence, expect the Gates of Orjalahti to play together a lot in the second half, and perhaps as starters against stronger opposition. Hedberg is a solid allrounder backup, but has his limitations. Riis is a young number 8 who is fast and strong, and will often attempt to break through the opposition and make up for the relatively slow flankers. His counterpart on the bench, Kjell Parsson, is a more defensive player with notable kicking skills.

Half-backs
Scrumhalf Alexander Newarov is perhaps the best passer on the team and used to be one of the relatively few Savojars that had an explosive run, although he has somewhat lost that over time. "Newa" is also a very good communicator and beloved within the side, but will probably have to be replaced quite early due to notorious stamina problems coming from his indulgent lifestyle. Otari, the other scrumhalf, is a better playmaker, but technically somewhat limited and often at danger from physical attacks, as he is less resilient than Newarov. Flyhalf Kristjan Niskanen is the face and captain of the team. A tactical player, he has brilliant oversight and a good kick, but he is often considered the weakest player on the team and will have to be protected by the other players. He used to be famed for his stamina, although many doubt if he still has as much power in himself. Ilari Vortas has often been considered a lacklustre replacement; although his kicking is superb, his leadership has been considered lacking and he is a bit of a meme for mishandling balls in a crucial game against major rivals Keski-Sumanen, although he usually handles the ball decently.

Three-quarters
The two centres are two of Savojarna's more notable players. Lindberg is a very clever man who often supports Niskanen or Vortas in playmaking and seeks open spaces for his attacks, and he has shown some proficiency with kicking as well, especially with dropkicks. In the Savojar league, he sealed a surprising win over Sumanen Etelä with a dropkick in the final minute, and has since received a reputation as a man for big plays. Mika Ranttanen is a very exciting player who often goes for risky plays and has a lot of speed, although it goes a bit against his strength. In a pinch, he has played on the wing before. Martimäki is primarily an outside centre who is very aggressive at shutting down play and has shown skill in swerving around opposition, as well as being a bit notorious for a short temper. Andrinski is a solid, but uninspiring inside centre whose strengths are in defence. On the wing, Savojarna have never been good, and many consider it the weakest position of the team. Setamainen has added some much-needed speed into the team, whereas Eythorsson has been referred to as "the siege tower" due to how he smashes through his opposition and due to his impressive height of 189 cm. Eythorsson is another one of the typical Savojar "fast once they get there" players, but his experience usually allows him to counter-balance that limitation. Göransson is a nice middle ground, and notable for being quite good at making spectacular (although also risky) offloads.

Fullbacks
Milvanen is a good kicker and often initiates Savojar counters with it, as well as an extremely stamina-heavy runner. While he is not very fast, he is reported as being impossible to exhaust and very enthusiastic in his defensive play. He often has managed to considerably relieve Savojarna with his long kicks and precise passes, but he is not known for his ability to counter by himself. His replacement Karpov is dubbed "Mister Shutdown" due to how good he is at defensive play and denying the opposition tries or chances for tries. However, his critics say that he often looks somewhat lost with the ball, and his kicking skills are somewhat limited to "put the ball out of our half as fast as possible".

Eryn Firith is, confusingly, the name of an elven realm located within* the province in Kelssek named after it. Although some syfirithà have in fact competed for Kelssek in international competition, this is the first time that the elven nation has entered an international tournament in its own right.

*There's a bunch of treaties and stuff, in practice it's sovereign and independent, but Kelssek claims the land as part of its territory, but it's illegal for anyone to go there without the elves' permission, etc., both sides agree not to fight each other over it. It's complicated.

Pratapgadh Annihilates HUElavia!
Image

Yesterday, Pratapgadh annihilated HUElavia 51 to 7. This is Pratapgadh's biggest win in rugby. On Matchday 1, Pratapgadh played against a newcomer, HUElavia. The match was played at Stade de la Gerlandie, Champjaune, and Pratapgadh's performance was astonishing. HUElavia's defence was incapable of resisting Pratapgadh's offence. This game brought a question to all of us, can Pratapgadh play like this against Nova Anglicana?

The match was completely one-sided, with Pratapgadh breaking the hearts of many HUElavians. This is how the match went. The match started with Pratapgadh having the ball. We got to see an amazing try by the captain, Rajeev Damle, who left others behind sprinting towards the try line. He scored the try 4 minutes into the match. Lobsang Drakpa successfully converts the try. The score is now 7-0. Philip Andrews has the ball, he passes it to Rajeev Yadav. Rajeev Yadav passes it to Drakpa, Drakpa sprints towards the try line! The HUElavians are too slow for him and he has scored a try 9 minutes into the match! He also successfully converted it bringing the score to 14-0. By half-time, the score was 28-0 with Damle scoring two tries, Drakpa scoring 1 and Apurba Chakroborty scoring 1 try. It was only 3 minutes into the second half and Hariram Shrimali has scored a try for Pratapgadh, Drakpa converts it successfully. 6 minutes later, HUElavia too scores a try and converts it. The score comes to 35-7. Rajeev Damle scores another try. Padmesh Vishnuvarjala and Apurba Chakroborty both score a drop goal. Later Pratapgadh got a penalty and scored two points from that. The final score was 51-7, total domination by Pratapgadh.

I had a talk with the team's captain, Rajeev Damle, about his and his team's exceptional performance. He said "We were on a roll today, excellent defence and merciless. If we play like this in every match, no team will take us lightly. We will keep working on our defence and also improve our offence." The head coach of Pratapgadh, Abhijeet Kayan, said: "This team is exceptional, they have worked really hard for this rugby world cup and they will surely succeed."

In conclusion, yesterday's match was an example of Pratapgadh team's power and we will see this power in many more matches. The offence was fantastic, especially Rajeev Damle and Lobsang Drakpa were exceptional in this match. To answer the question, can Pratapgadh defeat Nova Anglicana? It surely can! Pratapgadh is a team that has the courage and power to be a good team, and in my opinion, there is a chance for Pratapgadh to qualify for the knockouts. Whatever the result, all the best Pratapgadh!

ROSS ISLES FALL TO HOSTS AT RUGBY WORLD CUP OPENER

NEORVINS, KELSSEK - The Ross Isles national rugby union team fell to a 12-0 defeat against Rugby World Cup 28 hosts Kelssek in their capital city, Neorvins, last night. The cagey and defensive match was far from what is normally to be expected of an opening fixture in the Rugby World Cup, with the Ross Isles outfit showing great defensive prowess and not allowing the hosts much of an opportunity to show off their skills in front of a partisan crowd, with the first score of the match coming through a surprise drop goal from the Kelssek fullback, Mikkon Bradley, in the final minute of the first half. Although neither team managed to score a try in their opening game, the match was a tense and exciting affair, with the small Ross Islander contingent in the crowd going absolutely wild when Port Harrington winger, Quentin Harris, nearly crossed the line in the 51st minute, only to be met with a superb cover tackle from Kelssek winger, Xaiver Émond, and was taken into touch just a few metres from the line. Émond, who is also place-kicks for his country, then put three penalty goals over within the final half-hour of the match to bring the hosts' lead to 12 at the final whistle. The national side has a well-earned rest day in the next round of fixtures within the group and will face fellow newcomers Port Ember in Outineau later this week.

"Life is a sequence of closing doors, isn't it?"

"What are you talking about?"

"I mean, is that what is to all of this?"

"What are you going on about? Training is in five."

"Yeah, I know. I'll be there for training. But- you know, just drop it. I didn't say anything."

"Now, I'm curious. I wasn't before. Don't tell me to forget something. It doesn't work on me. It doesn't work on anyone, and you know that. You knew this would happen, you knew I would go on about it."

"Part of me knew that. Honestly, just drop it for now."

"Yeah, but now, I won't drop it. If you thought I'd drop the issue, or forget about it, you're probably the most socially illiterate person alive."

"Right."

"... So?"

"Well, is this all there is to it? Life is a set of closing doors. I read that somewhere. And I never felt it to be more true."

"I'll ask again, what's up with you?"

"I'm 25. That's not young talent anymore. That's not revelation anymore. I'm playing as a half, so speed was never my thing. I've got to hit my peak somewhere soon, and then stay good for a while. I want to play for the national team, even with the competition from the older guys. And I also want... I don't know, I want to leave something behind at the end of my career."

"Yeah, but you've got at least 10 more years to do that in. You're 25. Smart halves last a very, very long time, you guys never take shots. Wingers, now, they've got to carve their legacy before 29 and they lose their speed. But not you. You've got like 10 years ahead of you."

"Ok, but that's it then."

"?"

"10 years, and then?"

"Well, 10 years, to win 10 championships, take the NT to 2 or 3 world cups, you know."

"Only, I don't know if that's what I want to leave behind."

"Then what do you want to leave behind? A charity? World peace?"

"I've always been told... right, so I've always been told - and I always believed - that, if I just worked towards it, I could do anything. And I have! I'm on the national team, that counts for something. And yet, at the same time, I have to make the right choice. Every single time."

"One bad pass, an interception, and giving away a try. I know man, it comes with the territory."

"That's not what I mean. I've always been told that I hold my future in my own hands, but there's 14 other guys on the field with the same colour jersey, and they have to be on the same page. Even if I make all the choices towards the destiny I want - they all have to make similar choices to get anywhere."

"True, so what?"

"Do my choices matter? If I make the right choice, but the guy I pass to fucks up, my correct choice still leads to something bad."

"That's rugby for you. Or soccer, gridiron, whatever. Baseball, too. Anything."

"Yeah. But even bigger than that. I'm 25, I've got to make it right soon. I'm on a team that hasn't gone anywhere in the last two years - the years I've been in the league for. Two years ago Eaglebury Aquila was hyped, I was new, and the team could go places. We didn't. Then last year we never generated hype, and we didn't go anywhere again. Is this what my work and effort leads to? I've got to make a choice. Stay with this team. Move teams. Find a team abroad. There's 11 other teams beside Eaglebury. There's so much to choose from."

"Right."

"My contract's ending, and I can choose where to go. Say I go to Greencaster, the Galaxy, who are really big right now. Like, really, really big. And then don't win a championship. That's a year down, I'm 26, losing hype, and I've only got a few chances to get my career going."

"You've got so much talent, you're not out of this league any time soon though."

"Yeah, I want to play for a while. But then I'm 26, on the same crossroads, choosing to stay with a team, or move, with an eleven out of twelve chance I choose wrong again. Before you know it, I'm the guy who's on a mediocre team, as a talented player. Choices, choices. Most of them not going anywhere, but it's impossible to tell which ones lead to a dead end right now. And whatever I choose, I slam the door shut on other choices that I can never go back to. If I want to choose my destiny, and get to where I want to get to, I have to get these choices right. Life is a set of closing doors. If I choose something, dozens of doors slam shut. Potential championships. Happiness. World Cups, I don't know. And the problem is, even staying where I am and not changing anything also counts as one of those choices. And what's even worse, is that whatever I choose, I feel like I could've taken a better choice. Whatever I end up with, I won't be content with that, because it could've been better. All while I'm not getting younger, I've only got a few chances to hit on a championship team, with quality people, that I enjoy working with, and anything short of that feels like a failure to choose right. And if I do hit one of dozens of doors leading to anything short of silverware, fun teammates, and a World Cup trophy, as well as some happiness, a place to call my own, and a career post-rugby, that would just feel as getting my choice wrong. I don't know what to do, and any moment spent worrying about it, is a moment closer to missing the window to make a choice. Fuck, where do I go?"

"Bruh"

"What?"

"I don't know man, I'm pretty ok with where I am."

"How?"

"?"

"How do you do that? Being happy with where you are and where you're going?"

"I don't know... but why don't you try writing down what you want to achieve, and then find a way to get there? And it's fine if you're short of that goal, and it's also fine if you achieve your goals two or three years later than you hoped. It's not a race."

"It is a race though!"

"If it is, it's a race with yourself. You're not racing anyone. You're racing your idea of what could've been. You're chasing your idea of what could've been, and you'll never catch up, and you'll only end up cynical. If you're lucky. If not, you'll just be unhappy, broken."

"I'll try that writing down thing. Just needed to get this off my chest."

"Warn me next time you need to get something off your chest, man"

The Waves scored three tries as they shut out Kita-Hinode in the opening match of the World Cup. Craig Smith made the most of his international debut, crossing the line to finish off an excellent sequence set up by new number 8 Ben Stoneman, who took a Mike Rogers high ball cleanly to give the Barunians great starting position for the 10-play drive.
Smith, the RUC young player of the year, is widely considered to be one of the most exciting players coming up through the ranks in Barunia, and the future of Barunian rugby. The 18-year-old didn't seem fazed by the prospect of lining up alongside some of the world's greatest players, slotting in to the right wing like he'd been there for years. It was a star-studded line up for the Barunians on the opening night, with the full starting XV taking to the field against Kita-Hinode. The World Number 22 side is the only other ranked team in Barunia's group, and coach Strutton wasn't taking any chances in ensuring Barunia came away with a win.
In the end there was little to worry about, with the Barunians putting on a disciplined defensive performance, simply allowing their opponents no oppurtunities to score. Kita-Hinode had few real chances, with the Barunians keeping them firmly out of the Waves' 22-yard zone.

The Barunians extended their lead in the second half with tries to Murray and Harper, ensuring the Barunians start the world cup on top of the group with a massive 21-point difference. Although the competition has only just begun, the Barunians will be pleased with the result. There will be some concerns, especially over the fitness of Ross Wood, who left the field following a head knock in the second half, and who may be ruled out of the next games with concussion.
