HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS, THE CROWN PRINCE

To the Rwizikuran national team,

Like my father, I am delighted that you have qualified for the Coupe du Monde for the first time: all those years of dedication, training, and hard work have paid off, and to boot, you have even defeated the Nasanis in the qualifying round!

As you are preparing for your first matches in Piraea, know that eighteen million people will be watching or listening to the matches: even though many of them cannot afford to go to Piraea and Gibany, they are all rooting for you, and cheering for you. Yet, this does not necessarily mean that you can do whatever you want: to the contrary, you have a duty to fight like a cornered elephant, to score as many points in all your matches as you can, and to defeat all your competitors.

As it so happens that this Coupe du Monde will overlap with my father's abdication from the throne, and my accession to the throne as the third Mambo of the Kingdom of Rwizikuru, I feel that I have an obligation to send this letter to you now, while I am still crown prince, since I will be busy over the coming weeks acting as monarch, and organizing a constitutional convention to appease the guys over at the Global Institute for Fiscal Affairs, so our country can get the 1,252,156,000,000ſ loan needed to restructure our affairs.

If you make it to the finals, I will personally head to where-ever the finals are being held to see you win.

Sincerely,

Munashe Ngonidzashe

Jaguaars Remain Confident Despite Loss To Caldia

SHAREImage Image Image Image
Jan Koos (@JanKoos)
22 September (11:15am)|ALIKIANOS

The Jaguaars remain confident despite their 3-0 loss to Caldia last night at the Independence Stadium in the Piraean capital Alikianos.

The match began with Nuvania looking to strike early, but failed to capitalise on what appeared to be a defensive line that wasn't anticipating a side like Nuvania to be going on the attack. However it would be an agonising first half for Nuvanian fans as missed opportunities drew out the desperation from the Jaguaars. The Caldians picked up on this, and drew first blood midway through the first half with striker Yahli Benayoun belting the ball past goalkeeper Jason Cooper.

The experience and skill of the Caldian team was evident in the second half as Nuvania struggled to hold off a purple onslaught, with the Nuvanians rarely getting the ball outside of their own half of the field. The second Caldian goal came not long after half time, when team captain Aodhán Ó Loingsigh headed the ball into the goal after a frantic five minutes which saw several unsuccessful Caldian attempts saved by a desperate defence. This resulted in a penalty and yellow card against Nuvanian defender Isaac Vos, and Yahli Benayoun slammed the ball into the back of the net for Caldia's third and final goal.

The loss puts Nuvania at the bottom of the table for Group E, while Caldia's victory moves them to the top of the group.

Jaguaars coach Willem van der Walt said that the team was disappointed by their loss but not surprised.
"Caldia is a worldclass side and we're just not in the same league as them," he said. "So it's understanable, but still disappointing." However, he said that Nuvania did not have as much exposure to higher ranked sides, and therefore last night's match was a valuable learning experience.
"We'll look at how we played and take the lessons onboard," he said. "We can learn a lot from these matches."

Team captain Tiaan Meyer said that he was disappointed with the loss but was focusing on the next match.
"It's not the best start but the best thing we can do is learn from it and put that to good use in the next match," he said. "That way we can continue to improve."

Nuvania now faces Xiadong in the next Group E match. The Jaguaars have faced off against Xiaodong a number of times before, the last being a pre-tournamet friendly in 2011, where Nuvania lost 2-1. Their opening pool match against much higher ranked Amathia saw a three all tie, which has boosted optimism among the team and Nuvanian fans. Meyer said that he was looking forwards to the match as the two teams were more evenly matched.
"Hopefully we can pull off a victory against Xiaodong and boost our chances of making it out of pool play," he said. "That would definitely be something to remember."

Etruria dominate pitch but fail to clinch victory over Hennehouwe
ETR 0 : HEN 0
Despite draw, team is very confident and will learn from mistakes

Coach Antonio Stefano expressed disappointment at the lack of a win, but promised to address issues
before the next match.
Tense is the word being used to describe Etruria’s first outing at this year’s Coupe de Monde against Hennehouwe and tense is the right word.

For 92 minutes the game was dominated by a ferocious Etrurian side combatting a dogged Hennish that although completely lacking in invention, flair and solidity, saved themselves with a star keeper and often luck.

Etruria’s “Black Knights” played as they promised, hard, ruthless and unrelenting. They dominated the ball, tore down any Hennish attack midfield; the only two Hennish attempts at the Etrurian goal were free kicks and easily swatted aside by keeper Paladino.

But each Etrurian attack on the Hennish goal may spark concern within the changing room. The first and closest attempt came in at the 14th minute, off Giulio Donnatella’s corner pass, with Aurelio Silvestri’s strike saved barely by Hennehouwe’s Andrius van Bok. Van Bok’s skill and Lady Luck would repeat their frustrations of Etruria.

Time and time again, the Etrurian side seizes the ball, towards the end of the first half it had become their plaything, the Hennish struggling to retake it. At the 38th minute a trick tackle by captain Francesco Alteiri delivered the Hennish a free kick. Jan Winter’s attempt sent the ball way over the bar, much to the cheer of the Etrurian crowd.

The second half began with the Hennish once again slamming into Etruria’s tight defence. Validating head coach Antonio Stefano’s strategy of ruthless assault covered by a tight and mobile defence led by Josip Jedvaj. Once possession was retained, the first half repeated itself with four Etrurian attempts on the Hennish goal, frustrated by Van Bok and close-calls with balls hitting the bars. The closest and tense moment came with a corner from Aurelio Silvestri, connecting with Altieri’s head, only to be saved by a scrambling Van Bok.

Two minutes extra time did little to provide Etruria with its much deserved goal. Throughout the 92 minutes the team was playing to its reputation, of ruthless energetic attack, supported by a mobile and lightning defence. The Hennish, though a strong Euclean team, simply failed to muster the much need flair and inventiveness they’d need to beat Etruria, though a draw is good enough, for both sides, though the Etrurian fans appeared much more frustrated than their Hennish counterparts.

Speaking to reporters post game, manager Antonio Stefano was critical but optimistic, “I am disappointed but pleased. We dominated the pitch and showed the flexibility and cohesiveness that we need to play this competition, but too many misses and sloppy attempts were made.”

Asked what the team will focus on for the next game, he said, “if we can repeat the style of play but calm down and focus on the attack I am confident.”

Captain Francesco Altieri praised his team mates. “I am really proud of the squad, we played very well. I’ve got to call out Josip [Vedjaj], Paladino and Silvestri. We’re the strongest team in the group, we just faced a strong keeper and some bad luck. We can only look back and improve on mistakes.”

As of the two games from Group H, Narozalica leads the table with 3pts after its win over Aimilia, while Etruria and Hennehouwe draw on a point each.

INTERVIEW: ROLAND VARNE, MANAGER OF 'LES CROISÉS'.

Varne looks on as Ordennya take an early victory in their first match of the CM. Gaullica would later equalise, preventing defeat.

Alikianos, Piraea

Renowned Gaullican football manager, and manager of the national team, Roland Varne, was interviewed by Le Monde following Gaullica's first game at the CM2019. Playing at Independence Stadium in Alikianos, the Gaullican team played a game of speed, control and tactical passes that originally seemed to falter. An early goal by the star of the Ordennyan team, the striker Robin Hult -- who's expansive career has seen him play in his native Ordennya, Gaullica, Estmere and Hennehouwe --, caused a hiccup in the road to victory, and perhaps prevented the team from recovering. Yet after half time, the successive Gaullican attacks made head way with a goal in the 61st minute by Max Sartre.

Varne announced a "good match on both sides" at a post-match press conference. Yet, it can be argued, a feeling of disappointment was there. Sartre was happy to pose for the press and himself, in his own glory, but the team -- stated to be stronger than the Ordennyan -- were the expected to win.

We were able to secure an interview with Roland Varne, and he had high hopes and prospects for the Gaullican team from here-on out.

Mr. Varne, what did you think on entering this match against Ordennya?"

"That it would be the toughest of our group-stage, surely. Ordennya, aside from ourselves, is the strongest team in our grouping. They play good football. Unfortunately, luck was against us and an early goal can sway the mindset of the game. Yet, our players pressed on, and whilst we certainly pushed for a victory -- and I expected a victory -- an equalised game is far better than a loss."

Will there be a change in outlook, performance or strategy in the upcoming matches?

"Yes, no and no, respectively. Our formation is excellent. Our players in peak physical condition. Perhaps you could say this match was humbling, and even Goliaths must face their Davids. We don't wish to be surprised by the Rwizikuru, and we are going to play our best. Some substitutions might be in order, but the starting 11 are all a cohesive unit. I wont be allowing anymore slip-ups."

You said recently that the fans were your 'Twelfth Man', and are often very vocal about fan participation in football. Do you feel as if the fans were behind you this game?

"Of course. Without question. The fans of the team are plenty, the nation is behind us and we do not want to disappoint. They are the twelfth man, their spirit and determination to see us win. Those who dress as crusaders and knights brings joy to the team and amusement, it lifts the spirits in tense matches. When they sing such wondrous songs as the national anthem, or 'The Girl from the River Mareine', nothing can make an atmosphere become so wondrous."

On the topic of these crusader fans, the GHS recently announced an idea to get-rid of the notion of 'Croisés altogether. They cited discomfort from some of the players about the imagery and symbolism this invokes. What do you think?"

"Let me begin by preemptively announcing that the club does not abide by racism in any form. If we find our fans assaulting our players for their ethnicity or religious belief -- and not just our players, all players of all clubs -- we would feel immense disappointment. This is about the spirit of the game. Isaïe Bonnel and Kasim Feraoun have approached me about their minor discomforts with the name, but they understand the importance it has. The club has always been known as this. Sometimes the fans do go a little over-board with the dress, but, well, they have to have their fun too, no?"

The interview concluded with an affirmation that Gaullica intends on besting Rwizikuru at their next match-up on Sunday, who had a surprise loss against the Celestial Isles at their debut match. Mr. Varne congratulated their victory, and hoped for a match of 'good, clean football.'

CALDISH MEN SEE STRONG OPENING AT COUPE, BESTING NUVANIA 3-0

SHAREImage Image Image Image
Colmán Mac Gobhann (@colmacg)
25 September 2019 | Kissamos, Piraea

Image
Caldia's 3 to 0 victory over Nuvania has moved the team to the top of their group amid a strong start.

KISSAMOS – Going into this year’s Coupe du monde with high hopes and lofty aspirations, the Caldish men’s team comes sailing out of their first match with a strong victory behind them.

On Saturday, the Devils in Purple played their first match of the contest against Nuvania. Following a tense but amicable game, the Caldish men emerged victorious: 3 to 0.

Despite early attacks by the Nuvanian Jaguars, the Devils in Purple matched their aggression with a defense that ended up snuffing out the Nuvanians. About halfway into the first half, the Caldish went on the offensive and center-forward Yahli Benayoun landed a goal.

Fellow center-forward and team captain Aodhán Ó Loingsigh secured the team’s second goal with a header soon into the second half. The third and final goal once again came from Benayoun on a penalty kick. During the Jaguars hurried defense, defender Isaac Vos earned a yellow card that resulted in the penalty kick and subsequent goal.

Ó Loingsigh praised his teammates as having played “exceptional sport” and said that going forward “consistency [was] key” to continued success.

He also thanked the Nuvanians for a “friendly and intense” match and wished them luck going forward.

“Not every team plays as respectfully [as the Nuvanians]” the captain said at a post match press conference.

The strong start to the contest pushed the Caldish team to the front of their group and have placed them among the strongest teams in terms of opening performance.

“This victory is significant for us, but our fight is not yet over. It is only beginning” head coach Faolán Ó Seoigh said.

The Caldish men are set to face Amathia this Saturday in Gibany. The Amathian match with Xiaodong ended in a 3-3 draw last week.

Xiaodong will play Nuvania this weekend and will face off with Caldia next weekend to lose out the group stages.

Players and coaches alike are in high spirits going forward, with deputy captain and defender Íarla Mac Uidhir saying it was “simply a thrill just to be [at the Coupe]”.

“This really is an amazing experiencing, and we are all happy to be a part of it and to represent our country and our league”.

The opening match saw increased viewership in Caldia compared to years past. Men’s football in Caldia is usually dwarfed in popularity by women’s football. However, with the men’s surprisingly strong performance at the 2018 Invictus Games and their opening win against Nuvania, more fans are starting to pay attention.

A showstopper 30-yard strike from Modya Naumov saw The Sergeants through to a win.

Narozalica 2-1 Aimilia: As it happened
Balabanov and Naumov struck as Narozalica opened their Coupe with a win.
Bobr Andreyevich reporting from Drosnja, Gibany
September 26, 2019

The Sergeants opened their 2019 Coupe du Monde positively with a 2-1 win over Euclean opponents Aimilia, but not without some struggle.

Balabanov opened the scoring early on in the ninth minute when he slotted home a superb assist from captain Argun Khudu, putting Narozalica up whilst they had retained a convincing 67% possession in the opening ten minutes of the game. Narozalica continued to control the game throughout the first half, but a master-class from the Aimilian goal keeper denied the Narozalic front three six times between Balabanov's opener and the half time.

The Sergeants retained 61% possession in the first half, and boasted a whopping 11 shots on target, the most in the opening round of the Coupe - and it had only been 45 minutes.

But an inspiration half time talk by the Aimilian manager inspired the central Euclean team to step it up a notch, with a well-earnt foul outside of the box being converted in the bottom corner from a free kick bringing the two teams level at 1-1 in the 58th minute. Narozalica struggled through the next half an hour with shaky build up play from the back, replacing Sharov with 20-year-old Yusupov in the 73rd minute and Anisimov with Bazhenkov in the 77th minute to revamp the lacklustre midfield sitting behind the front three, who had been getting little to no chances throughout the second half.

But Narozalica's saviour struck hard and struck well in the 88th minute, as right-winger Modya Naumov expertly placed a strike into the top-left-hand corner to give Narozalica a late 2-1 lead, with the Narozalic portion of the crowd erupted in cheer, Naumov was yellow carded late in the game for removing his shirt in celebration - deemed "inappropriate" by the Xiaodongese referee.

The final whistle blew after two minutes of added time, and the Narozalic team went over to celebrate with the fans.

In an interview with Narnet Sports after the game, Naumov said that "It is an amazing feeling, scoring [the winning goal] at the Coupe was something I always dreamed of. And now it is reality. The fans here were great and I want to thank each and every one of them."

Manager Dimitri Bobka also gave praise to the 26 year old winger, labelling his strike as "one to remember". But Bobka didn't come without his criticisms, he said he aimed to "sharpen our anchor in midfield" and "improve our defensive tracking and discipline" before the game against Euclean footballing giants Etruria, the most important game of the group stage for Narozalica.

LIONS DOMINANT OVER KITUK, BUT ARE THERE MORE MOUNTAINS TO CLIMB?
We interview rising star Aldrik Karlson on the win over Kituk and the upcoming game against Sanslumiere.
Ivvar Torston
September 26th, 2019|Alikianos, Piraea

Image
Joel Hammarström (left) and Aldrik Karlson (right) celebrate after a rally by Eldmark extended the lead 2-0. The Lions would retain that lead, shutting out Kituk. The team plays Sanslumiere tomorrow at Independence Stadium in Alikianos, Piraea.

Alikianos, Piraea

While you are already well aware of household names on the Eldmarsk team such as Ingvar Ekman, Samuel Xi'a, or Bartolomeo Moller, a name that is new to the blue and gold jerseys of the lions is Aldrik Karlson, a midfielder from Platenburg IFK who scored the final goal against Kituk to seal the lions' win Saturday night. Typically a reflexive but aggressive team, Eldmark seemed to dominate the field, allowing very few scoring attempts against the venerable and feared goalkeeper Ingvar Ekman, whose skill erected an iron wall over the goal Kituk just could not overcome. Manager Hakon Adelsköld stated postgame that he was "proud of the team, but work must still be done."

Though victory against the Kituki team was sweet and deserved, it is agreed that Sanslumiere - known as the Mountains - are significantly a more capable opponent, as shown by their win over Daaqii - also at a score of 2-0. It is expected that this game will be much less one-sided, and expected to be quite the battle.

Inviting Aftonstjärna for an interview, Karlson expressed heavy confidence for the lions, and a few words of encouragement for the fans.

A: Mr. Karlson, how do you feel about your team's win over Kituk Saturday?

K: "I couldn't be more proud of my guys out there. We came to play, they came to play, and we played. We got some work to do, but I couldn't be more proud of my guys. We had solid, sustained drives, it felt really good. We had to work to score, and Kituk's got a real dedicated defense, but I think we did a really good job adjusting to it. They definitely had a gameplan."

A: What about you? You're talking a lot about your guys, but you were out there too.

K: "Yeah, I hear you, but it isn't about me, it's about us, my team, brothers, and we have to work together, so why not work together the best? I don't like bragging about myself, because there's no way I could have scored without Moller, or without Joel making a hole for me, or Xi'a for keeping them occupied all night. If we talk about me, we gotta talk about my guys. To me there isn't an MVP, either we all are or we aren't."

A: Piraea, how are you liking it so far?

K: "Oh, I haven't had much of a chance touring the country, but from how their people treat us, it's a great place. The staff are so friendly and it's also got the benefit of being warm but not as humid as it can get back home on the coast."

A: Speaking of back home, the Queen wrote you all a letter wishing you all well, what do you think of it?

K: "I know she watches these games, and we all thought well of the letters we got. She's one of our biggest fans, I've heard. I'd like her to come attend but that's up to her, of course."

A: She might, but first, the next game against Sanslumiere. What are your thoughts, and what should the Lions adjust going forward?

K: "They're a good team, and we're going to bring our A game because we know they're going to bring theirs. We know it's going to be a challenge, and the mindset going forward has to reflect that. We still need to work on making the right decisions and calling the right formations going forward, that cost us a little against Kituk. So look out for us tomorrow."

EARLY VICTORY
Just as with the Invictus Games, the Celestial Empire makes a name for itself

Alikianos, PIRAEA- Following up on the imperial celebrations of the hard-earned single gold that the Celestial Empire brought home in the Invictus Games, remarkable in Sublustrian history for fielding a purely-indigenous team descended from warrior clans and for the Sublustrian Union's first participation ever in the games, a new record is being set as the World Cup commences. The sport, known in Yocatullic as Petupo'opo'o, meaning "Kickball", has not had a significant presence traditionally in Sublustria. While similar games have existed for centuries, the actual sport of Kickball only began to take off in Sublustria following the return of warriors from the Great War. While this era is more well-known for the importation of information and technology, such as the workings of Pe'a Oranirani, the returning heroes also brought some games with them. Among these was Kickball, a game that they had adopted from their interactions with continental soldiers and played with them between battles.

The veterans popularized the sport among themselves when they returned, but it remained a niche sector dominated by a particular generation of warriors. By the 60's and 70's, it was seen increasingly seen as as an old-fashioned, gimmicky pastime within the warrior caste, and more traditional indigenous sports returned to popularity. Since the turn of the millennium, however, it has seen steady gains in popularity with the encroaching influence of the outside world. Even the most conservative elements of Yocatullic society do not shun this, for many of them played it in their youth. The return of the sport was the sign of a new era, and now Sublustria can send world-class athletes to a competition in far away lands. The feelings invoked by the Invictus are rising once more across the empire, and a bright new day is dawning.

Already, the team has found victory over a foe. The Bahian state of Rwizikuru sent a team that is likewise historic, and as a primer the two teams battled one another on the playing field. The competition was intense, but the Yocatullic team pulled ahead and secured victory in the end. Some attribute this to their fine athletic form, from years of traditional tribal activities and lifestyle shaping their ability to perform on the field. Rwizikuru, it is said, put up a strong defense, unmoving like a mountain. It was a commendable effort certainly, especially against the battle-rush of the Sublustrian warriors. While the foe tried to deploy a traditional Bahian horn-style formation to flank past the Sublustrian team, the signature Tsunami Charge of the Wave Warriors, a tactic developed and deployed but never before in the World Cup, turned the tide. The aggressive push alongside its rather flexible lines allowed the Sublustrians to catch the horns and flip the field. With the foe trapped on the defensive, their concentrated efforts led to a prolonged game.

Ultimately, the Sublustrian team was victorious. Many at home, watching broadcasts or listening to cheap radios in shacks, cheered the news. Makeshift celebrations filled the streets of neighborhoods and villages, the people happy to see that their team won. It is a sense of pride in tribe and in people, in some ways a projection of anti-colonialism, and in many regards it is simply that the Sublustrians are grateful that there is at least one field in which they can be respected and successful, even on par with the greater powers of the world. We shall see how long this victory can be sustained, but for now, even a single victory can ignite the fires of hope across a vast ocean.

Jaguars Win Against Xiaodong

Jaguars players celebrate after their 2-0 victory over Xiaodong.

The Jaguars have made up for their opening match loss to Caldia with this afternoon's 2-0 win over Xiaodong at the Giannis Amanatidis Stadium in Kissamos, Piraea.

The win puts Nuvania into second in Group 5 after Caldia, who overpowered Amathia 3-0.

Jaguars coach Willem van de Walt made changes to the starting squad for this match, resting more experienced players from the original lineup that played in the opening match against Caldia. He said he wanted to rest some of Nuvania's more experienced players and give the team's two youngest players, Charlie van der Walt and Matthew Whitfield, both 19 years old, some experience at playing at the international level.
"It's good to give as many of the younger players some time on the field so they get to experience what an international match feels like," he said. "It gives them a better understanding of what to expect, how to play, and how to react to different play styles."

The two youngsters did not dissappoint, with midfielder Charlie van der Walt instrumental in setting up the first goal of the match just after half time, making a run up the left of the pitch before belting the ball to team captain Tian Meyer, who scored the Jaguars' first goal of the tournament, slotting it in past Xiaodong's goalkeeper Shen Panmin.

Much of the first half was largely uneventful with both sides unable to capitalise on runs against both goals. Towards the end of the first half it looked like Xiaodong had scored first. However, in one of the first uses of television referees at the Coupe du Monde, what was initially thought to be a header from right forward Xi Chengji turned out to be a hand ball, and was dismissed.

The Jaguars turned around what was a lacklustre first half into an attacking second half with the first goal by Tian Meyer six minutes into the second half. One of the best sporting Nuvanian sporting moments this year followed ten minutes later when right midfielder Nico Pasch made a run up the right side of the pitch and passed the ball to Meyer, who didn't have a clear shot at goal. Faced with almost the whole Xiaodongese defence charging at him, Meyer chipped the ball to Nicolaas van Wyk who lobbbed the ball at the goal. It missed and bounced off the far post, where it was stopped and gathered by Mattew Whitfield, who got the ball into a good position and slammed it past Xi for Nuvania's second goal of the match and of the tournament, prompting the Nuvanian fans to go wild in celebration.

Coach Willem van de Walt said that the match was a good example of letting younger players out onto the pitch to see what they're capable of.
"It's different to what they're used to," he said. "It's not like club matches, there's a new element to this and that is what sets it apart from what they're used to."

Team captain Tian Meyer said that he was "exstatic" about the win over Xiaodong. He said that the team worked well and the young players left their mark.
"Charlie and Matthew have really outdone themselves today," he said. "They've shown a lot of promise and a lot of talent, and with a bit more experience they'll be fantastic players."

Matthew Whitfield was overcome with emotion after scoring his first international goal for Nuvania. He said that the whole experience was "absolutely amazing" and that he wants more time on the field.
"I can't remember the last time I felt like this, so it's very special for me," he said. "It's an amazing feeling you know, representing Nuvania and to do something like that, you just can't say how amazing that feels."

van de Walt also said that the team was looking forwards to a well deserved two days off at the beach in Kissamos before returning to base in Paliani ahead of their third and final match against Amathia.

Nuvania has never played against Amathia before in an international match before. Coach van de Walt said that the team would be studying the two group matches Amathia has played; their three all draw with Xiaodong and their 3-0 loss to Caldia. van de Walt said that the team's performance was "difficult to predict" given they drew with a side that Nuvania managed to overcome.
"There's a lot of unknowns with the Amathians," he said. "So we're going to go into this with no idea what the outcome may be."

Amathian fans have also caused some controversy with their behaviour. They were alleged to have used racial slurs against fans from both Rwizikuru during a fight in a hotel, and similar behaviour was observed during their second pool match against Caldia. Jaguars manager Jan Van Biljon has raised the issue with representatives from the International Football Federation (FIF) who have said that extra security would be made available for the final Group 5 match.

Nuvania will face Amathia at the Giannis Amanatidis Stadium in Kissamos on Saturday October 5, with kickoff at 2:00pm.

RWIZIKURU LOSES TO GAULLICA 1-4
Rwizikuru eliminated from contention from the Coupe du Monde

Watida Muchena | 27 SEPTEMBER, 2019 18:26 | ALIKIANOS, PIRAEA

Today, Rwizikuru finds itself eliminated from contention in the Coupe du Monde, as it lost its second match in the group stage 1-4 against the Gaullican Crusaders. Max Sartre scored a goal at the nine minute mark, followed by Baptiste Verninac at the twenty-two minute mark. In the second half, Sikarudzi Croome managed to score a goal at the 61-minute mark, but was unable to defeat the Gaullicans, as Sartre scored another goal for the Crusaders at the sixty-four minute mark, and then Jean-Noël Pascal scored with just seconds left to go.

Following the match, manager Oswald Hallam told reporters that "the MaVarvi have not fared to the expectations that the Rwizikuran nation have placed upon them as much as we have hoped. With our catastrophic defeat against the Yocatullic national team on the 21st of September 1-3, and now this defeat, it has become quite obviously clear that we are not making it into the Group of Sixteen."

Hallam said that despite the fact that the MaVarvi are no longer in contention to advance into the Group of 16, he vowed to put in as much effort to ensure that "the MaVarvi can defeat the Ordennyans on our last match at the stadium in Hersonissos, if only for the people in Rwizikuru to feel like we've did something."

CALDISH 3-0 VICTORY OVER AMATHIA MARRED BY FAN VIOLENCE

29 September 2019 | Alikianos, Piraea

Yahli Benayoun, pictured in his old Tsabaran national uniform, secured two goals but faced racist chants from Amathian fans.

ALIKIANOS – Caldia has secured its spot in the Round of Sixteen, besting Amathia in yesterday’s match 3 to 0. However, it’s victory was overshadowed by violent outbursts from Amathian fans, who reacted poorly to their team’s defeat.

The Caldish men dominated the field, preventing Amathia from scoring and keeping a strong hold on the ball. The Amathian Red Squires only got one shot on goal, which was swiftly blocked by goalkeeper Rónán Ó Flanagáin.

The aggressive offense of the Devils in Purple, which was seen in last weekend’s 3-0 against Nuvania, was met by a strong defense. There was a notable difference in the way the Caldish men defended their half of the pitch when compared to last week’s game, which saw the Nuvanian Jaguars secure several early break aways.

Building on last week’s strong showing, coach Faolán Ó Seoigh seemingly bolstered his defense to deny access to the Red Squires.

For their part, the Amathians were able to fend off repeated onslaughts led by captain Aodhán Ó Loingsigh and center-forward Yahli Benayoun. However, at the thirty-four minute mark the Caldish men secured their first goal, with Benayoun sinking one past Simion Andreescu, the Amathian goalkeeper.

The second half saw similar tactics deployed by the Devils. An early push by the Amathians was shut down by the Caldish defense, marking the only time the Red Squires would make a serious push to score. Ó Loingsigh scored a goal halfway into the second half. Benayoun secured the third on a penalty kick after Amathian defender Cotiso Pîrvulescu grabbed his jersey.

Incidents took place during and after the game. During Benayoun’s penalty kick, Amathian fans began chanting racial and religious slurs at him. An Atudite originally from Tsabara, Benayoun has faced racism on the pitch before. However, his teammates and coaching staff were visibly shocked by the scale of it. The penalty kick resulted in a goal two minutes before the end of the match.

After the game had ended, a group of Amathian fans tried to surge onto the field but were interpreted by stadium security. The Caldish team was quickly hurried into the locker room and many of the Devils’ fans promptly left the stadium.

Once out of the stadiums, the Amathian fans carried on by destroying property and engaging in street fights. Piraean riot police ended up suppressing them with tear gas and rubber bullets.

Commenting on the match, head coach Ó Seoigh said he was “very proud” of the way his team performed and expressed his “total disgust” for the way the Amathian fans conducted themselves.

“I am very proud of the way we performed today, what we saw was cooperation and skill resulting in a victory they had secured our place going forward. However, I am left with a feeling of total disgust after seeing how the Amathian fans reacted to the result. Such behavior is totally unacceptable”.

He denounced the racism faced by Benayoun as “vile” and said it had “no place in football”.

The head coach called on the Coupe’s organizers to work to prevent such incidents from being repeated.

At a post game press event, Benayoun said he was "appalled" by the conduct of the Amathian fans, but said he would not let it distract him going forward.

"We will have a long road ahead of us" he remarked.

Next week, the Devils will face Xiaodong in the final match of the group stages. Caldia remains at the top of Group 5, followed by Nuvania. Win, loss, or draw, the Caldish men will head to the Round of Sixteen. The second spot is still contested, with Nuvania, Amathia, and Xiaodong all left with a pathway to the next stage.

GAULLICA'S POSITION SOLIDIFIED AS RWIZIKURU IS ALL BUT ELIMINATED.

Gaullican fans were caught in a spur of patriotism and the spirit of the game at a 4-1 victory over Rwizikuru.

Alikianos, Piraea

Gaullica presented a strong showing at Independence Stadium in Alikianos, where their second match come in as sigh of relief. Securing a victory against Rwizikuru has kept Gaullica in the race as Ordennya secured a similar needed victory over the Celestial Isles, the team that had the most points in the Seventh Group before Saturday.

Roland Varne, Gaullica's manager, praised the team's "dedication to the game and the desire to do their nation proud. The Group of Sixteen, and more, is ours! We have a reputation to uphold as the reigning champions, of course." The initial draw against Ordennya proved a large morale shock for the fans at home and the team, who had expected -- perhaps over confidently -- that it would be a breeze. Varne did comment that the experience was 'humbling', but praised the 'good football' played.

Max Sartre scored a goal at the nine minute mark, followed by Baptiste Verninac at the twenty-two minute mark. In the sixty-first minute, Sikarudzi Croome managed to score a goal placing the match at a manageable 2-1 for the Crusaders. Rwizikuru was unable to capitalise on this goal, as Sartre scored another goal for the Crusaders a mere three minutes later, and then Jean-Noël Pascal scored with just seconds left to go. The resulting 4-1 victory soundly placed Gaullica at second in the group table.

Sartre, in a post-match press conference, said he was "loving playing the game" and declared that "without the team, [he] wouldn't have scored those goals.'" When asked if he would have liked to score a hat-trick over his brace, he replied "Of course, but I'd rather my team score -- and they did. Bless up Verninac and Pascal."

The conduct of Gustave Vaugrenard has also been praised by the fans and by the press, who has only conceded two goals in two matches, but was successful in stopping numerous Rwizikuran counter-attacks. He saved three other shots on target, guaranteeing his team the victory. "I'm just doing what I have to do. I wish no goal would be conceded. But I'm giving it my all and as long as the fans understand that, I'm more than happy."

Gaullica's next match comes against the Celestial Isles, who she'd have to defeat in order to secure a place in the Group of Sixteen. This is of course not the only avenue in which it can be achieved; if Ordennya secures a surprising loss against the Rwizikuran team -- it could go down to goal difference.

"I am deeply concerned for the team's safety and the safety of our fans"

Samuel Xi'a has always been outspoken against racism and violence, such as in 2016 when he quit playing for FF GRÖN over harassment due to his race. GRÖN ended up clearing their staff over the incident, but his name as a rabble rouser and firebrand on and off the pitch continues. His most recent interview discusses the games, hooliganism, and the threat by Etrurian fans to "tear the place down" if they do not advance. "I have deep concerns about the conduct of some fans. Some of them have a deep sense of entitlement that makes them believe that a loss by them is a slight and proof of some deep conspiracy, it's all a crock. The fact it's been normalized somewhere sadly means it can be normalized elsewhere, and anyone should be deeply upset that it's taking place."
